Behind the Music Video
00:09:49
Speaker
What it do? Thanks for having us Absolutely, absolutely appreciate you guys being here and we got Spencer in the building now. What does Spencer do in the band?
00:10:04
Speaker
I'm still trying to figure that out myself. ah We're out here having fun. I play guitar and I help do some songwriting here.
00:10:15
Speaker
but Memphis, obviously, you're the the lead singer and whatnot. You guys can see that by the by the video there at the beginning. That's a cool video. The DJ guy makes me think that in real life he's an absolute lunatic.
00:10:30
Speaker
That's not him acting. That's not him. don't even know that guy i don't know his name was just like friend of the director right
00:10:44
Speaker
and he could not get that delivery right he kept um he kept doing it with like a disappointed tone which was baffling yeah don't know where that came from we kept just saying cut hey don't sound so disappointed Just like you don't give a shit and move on.
00:11:01
Speaker
it took about 20 takes.
00:11:07
Speaker
Man, a lot. So right right real quick, right off the rip, what's it like for you guys, since we're talking about the music video, to shoot a music video?
00:11:18
Speaker
I've heard a bunch of different stories. and you know so It's a pain in the ass because you've got deal with this, you've got to deal with that. Other people are like, it's one of my favorite things to do because we just get to have fun.
00:11:29
Speaker
So, you know, curious what your guys' thoughts are on that.
Inside the Music Creation Process
00:11:33
Speaker
We've done some casual, like, live footage type stuff. but That was the first one we did that was theatrical with a full production.
00:11:42
Speaker
And it was fun. We had someone directing it, our buddy CJ Bills. he's He's in Colorado now. But he was down in Austin when we did that. So he took a lot of the the trouble off our plate.
00:11:57
Speaker
oh We had a hell of a time. That's one of mine and Spencer's hangouts, that karaoke bar um called the Canary Roost. It's in North Austin. And it's just like total dive bar.
00:12:11
Speaker
They serve beer and those like old glass like chalices. And it's just a cool place and a lot of of regular. So we shot the theatrical part there.
00:12:25
Speaker
and then we had Mike from, at the time, Mike and the Moon Pies, but Silverado now. He's a buddy, and he came out, and he sang on the the studio version, so he agreed to come out for the video, and that was, we had a lot of fun on one. It looked like ah just kind of a fun video just just to do and have fun with.
00:12:50
Speaker
So, definitely a cool show. It was. It was.
00:12:54
Speaker
ah You can't see, but I...
00:12:58
Speaker
Oh, I think Memphis is still cutting out and breaking up. what you said You said we can't see, but... I had an incredible amount of back sweat going on during that live part.
00:13:10
Speaker
If you look closely, you can see it through my denim shirt towards the end of the summer. Now we're all going to go back and watch the video.
00:13:23
Speaker
You know, your go your streams are going to go. You're going to get a big old boost in your streams because everybody's going to go back and look for the back sweat now.
00:13:33
Speaker
Is it my connection? Do i need to go somewhere else? I think it might be your connection.
00:13:42
Speaker
Well, might just be the person.
00:13:46
Speaker
We'll see ah if it goes out again. Y'all Yeah, you're definitely glitching up pretty pretty bad. go Yeah, you're glitching and freezing up pretty bad.
00:14:00
Speaker
All right. Yeah, definitely going to... Now, because of the back sweat mention, we're gonna everybody's going to go back and watch it three or four more times. and yeah That algorithm's going to boost you guys up and and that song get more play.
00:14:17
Speaker
It's a fun song. It's a cool song, especially... you know uh for anybody who's ever ever gone through a breakup or anything like that but it's not so much of a woe is me feel sorry for me it's just like fuck it just do whatever you're gonna do you know oh yeah yeah yeah that that's actually uh one of the only covers on the album uh so ryan adams cover um rest of them are equally as
00:14:50
Speaker
um I don't know. The pressing in that sense. There's a couple of sad ones on that, but that one is on the only cover on
Music Evolution during COVID-19
00:15:00
Speaker
there. And it's, we we love that song. I think we've been playing that song ever since me and Jason started playing together. we And we started back in 2020 and right, right, right when the peak of everything was like shutting down.
00:15:17
Speaker
i but i've had so i've had so many bands that have been on here or artists and they're like yeah so we started in 2019 or we started 2020 and it's just like a hell of a time to start a band it is i don't know why or how or it worked and but people still listened and we just tried to get out there and play i mean there wasn't anything better to do there, you know, just play songs you like. And then eventually we were like, why don't we just start writing songs? And yeah, I was, that was the one on the album that wasn't written. So we love that one a lot. I think we put that one on every show.
00:15:57
Speaker
That's a good song. i don't, I don't know that I've ever heard it before. So it was, it was new to me. i mean, I could be wrong. I listened to a lot of music, ah yeah especially,
00:16:11
Speaker
especially when I'm in the gym. So I don't really know how to describe the original. It's it's like almost singer-songwriter a little bit, but it's way more Americana, way more sad bastard than how we did it. Hey, he's back. Yeah, I was going to say, you guys definitely, definitely did not, you know, make it, like I said, it's not one of those, everybody's gone through a breakup and everybody's, everybody's,
00:16:38
Speaker
got their thing that they, you know, that them sad songs that they go sit in the corner and boo-hoo and whatever. Like, it's such a cool breakup song because it's like, i could listen I could be out at a bar and listen to this and just still continue to have a good time and not feel bad at all.
00:16:55
Speaker
Yeah. I think that's why everybody loves it. It's relatable, you know? Mm-hmm. 100%. Now, you guys are just now you guys are right just Just real briefly, you guys are out in Texas, right?
Texas Tunes and Cultural Chatter
00:17:12
Speaker
Yes, sir. um no Out in Austin, I believe. Shout out to Texas, man. You guys have been giving me a lot of love on this show. First, it was Nashville. Nice. Yeah. i'm
00:17:24
Speaker
Got the Lone Star back there. Yeah, was going say, I think he froze again. But yeah, the Lone Star State. I was hoping he'd freeze like that the rest of the show. Just but but I don't know. don't know what it is. I don't think it's reception now.
00:17:42
Speaker
Yeah. Um, no, first it was Nashville that I got a lot of love from and now it's been Texas and I, I ain't mad at it, man. I'm digging it. That's awesome. Two good markets.
00:17:54
Speaker
Yeah. Really good. Uh, and, and you know, um, Austin's one of those places that, uh, I have a buddy that lives out that way. He's, he works with TSA. Um, And he was like, look, you'd be in heaven out here. The music's great. The food's great. The beer's cold and the women are hot. I'm like, fucking count me in. Four of my favorite things. You described Texas to a T. I might know him. I live right next to the airport.
00:18:19
Speaker
I said, was like, my guy's a place. Four of my favorite things right there. Here, let's go. Don't forget barbecue, too. We got that as well. I got a buddy that lives out there and he's a barbecue man. by He's a soon to be barbecue master.
00:18:35
Speaker
ah can I can't remember where he's at. I think he's closer to Houston. And every Saturday and Sunday, he's, he's the only man that can send me meat pictures that I don't get pissed off about.
00:18:50
Speaker
but yeah You don't have to like the meat picture, but you got to respect it. Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
00:18:58
Speaker
But you guys you guys have a you guys have a really cool sound.
Shred Dirt: A New Genre?
00:19:02
Speaker
And and and and I want to ask you something. wow well what You guys have like an old school kind of a country blues mixed with some rock.
00:19:12
Speaker
But that that old school vibe to your music. And it's really cool. Mixed in with storytelling, which you don't get to see a lot of in today's big artists. Which I love that stuff. I grew up in that.
00:19:25
Speaker
eighties and nineties and listening to country music and big fan of the blues and stuff like that. So I love that, but you guys have on your, on your social media and stuff like that. Oh man, I'm going to screw it up.
00:19:40
Speaker
Oh Lord. Red dirt shred dirt. Yeah, that's what it was. Shred dirt. Is that what you consider your style of music?
00:19:50
Speaker
Yeah, it's, yeah it's a little bit of marketing. Um, but it's it does describe it it you know red dirt music is really what we're if we had to be one genre that would probably be it but we do have a little more guitar heavy it's not just the storytelling like especially on the new record um the instruments have their own parts. it's It's not just like radio singles where it's five second intro, verse chorus, verse chorus bridge, outro, and it's done.
00:20:29
Speaker
We've got one song that the second half of the song is a guitar battle essentially between Spencer and Jake.
00:20:38
Speaker
So we incorporate the music more than just the ah story. And so some of that music, though, is Spencer shredding the hell out of his guitar.
00:20:50
Speaker
And that gives the band the that attitude that we love we' love to have.
00:21:00
Speaker
Yeah, that first album love is very, very, very guitar heavy and shred dirt. And that's where that red market, red dirt market came from for us. In our new album coming up, I'm not sure how much I'm allowed to say about it, but um there's it's a different direction.
00:21:17
Speaker
But one thing I think that a lot of people in the band have noticed, at least sort of our or little following that we have, is that it's a almost a completely different sound, but it's just a conglomerate of the of the really talented people in the band, too. so and The first album was very ja Memphis...
00:21:39
Speaker
Jason oriented where he just brought a lot of songs to our bass player, me and Paul Pinion. It was just a four piece at the time. And it was just like, what can we do with this? And then I was like, well, I can play the guitar. And it turned out to be very shreddy, but it was enjoyable. And we were like, yeah, let's let's let's go with it.
00:22:03
Speaker
And then this next album that we're coming in with is a lot more. um It's like a Megazord. We're all a bunch of Mayans inside the machine working for it.
00:22:16
Speaker
that Power Rangers reference. Yeah. well Well, Power Rangers, show your age a little bit, Spencer. Yeah, yeah,
00:22:29
Speaker
yeah I'm okay. I'm i'm happy. No, we're probably right in that same age group. Yeah.
00:22:37
Speaker
but that is that is true like the first record was mostly stuff that was written already and the structure was essentially there and then they added flavor and this record was the first one where we've been a band from the beginning of every song on it so instead of just coming in at the end they're more interesting rather than just taking the you know the basic structure cause I'm not a great guitar player.
Album Insights and Evolution
00:23:10
Speaker
um That's not my thing. I'm a decent bassist, but Joey's better than me. um But instead of just taking my basic form and trying to just dress it up, we all were there when the songs were written.
00:23:28
Speaker
We wrote them together. And so you'll hear more ah nuance, parts and songs, transitions, layering.
00:23:41
Speaker
It's just, they're better from top to bottom when we've all had a say from the beginning. Yeah. Yeah. No, that's, that's cool. I'm definitely, you guys, and and and again, you know, don't, don't, don't divulge too much information that you don't want to.
00:23:57
Speaker
Do you guys have an idea of when the new album is going to, going to be out or be available or anything yet, or is it still up in the air? It's hot topic. um that's a So it really, it's going to depend on how the, but we're going to have our first song going to radio, single number two.
00:24:20
Speaker
And it's a duet with Jamie Lynn Wilson that turned out really good. And it's called Bewitched. And that one where we're going to take to radio with full promotion and everything for the first time ever. So if that one,
00:24:35
Speaker
deserves more time than what we're probably going to do is tour on the singles rather than wait for the record to come out to tour. So I'm thinking the first song should be out hopefully in about a month to six weeks.
00:24:51
Speaker
And that's a song called I'll Come Running that Spencer wrote. And that's going to be song one. And that's going to get about a month. um And then single two, Bewitched, is going to come out. And then we don't really know for sure how long that one's going to run.
00:25:05
Speaker
So record early side of things, probably August on the late side of things, October. that That seems to be the the new format with a lot of with a lot of artists and and bands and stuff, especially ones that I've interviewed, is we're going to let the singles simmer.
00:25:27
Speaker
We're not worried so much. The album is ready. Like the album, it's ready to go. We can get it in and and put it out and do whatever everything. But we want to let the singles kind of simmer a little bit and build traction and and get those views and get those followers and stuff like that before the full album was dropped. You know, back in the day, it was like, I remember growing up and counting down the days, you know, you'd hear,
00:25:51
Speaker
Guns N' Roses had a new album coming out or you know, Garth Brooks or something like that. You're literally had it marked on your calendar because you might only get one or two songs that went onto the radio, but you're like, I want more now. So there's a little bit more pressure behind it where today with the internet and social media, you guys can tease and drop and do whatever you want and get all the buildup you want to get, way before and album drops, which is cool too, especially for, for
Social Media and Fan Engagement
00:26:19
Speaker
fans. And and I'm a newer fan.
00:26:20
Speaker
Um, but I stumbled across you guys just a little while back and liked your sound. And I was like, oh let me check these guys out some more. Let me let me w jump on the YouTube and stuff like that and see what you guys had going on.
00:26:36
Speaker
And I mean, that seems to be the ah route to go anymore these days is get that that social media following. And it's yeah and but it seems like you guys stay pretty busy with doing live shows and stuff like that, too.
00:26:49
Speaker
We're in a lull right now, but it's intentional. Um, we know we've made a conscious decision that we're not going to be like road dogs year round.
00:27:00
Speaker
That's not what anybody in our band wants to do is be gone all the time. Um, everybody in the band's either married or has somebody that they've been with for a long time. And, um,
00:27:12
Speaker
couple of us have kids and it's, it's a sacrifice. We're all willing to, you know, accept whatever that is, but we, we're going to tour and, know, hit it hard for a month, two months and then break and then hit it hard again. And so right now we're, we're in that break right before the release, because this is going to be busy once it gets going in about a month, we're going to stay busy through the end of the year and probably end of summer of next year, just,
00:27:41
Speaker
with the promo cycle of this. yeah So we're just trying to be smart about it. And a lot of bands that shouldn't break up, break up because they push, push, push. And that is the formula for some bands.
00:27:55
Speaker
If they do take breaks, they break up. know They need it. But I think ours is, hey, let's let's keep it on good terms. Let's be smart about it. And then really just give it our all when we're doing it and not get burned out.
00:28:09
Speaker
when you guys, when you guys take breaks, do you guys completely take a break away from the music or do you guys still kind of get together and brainstorm and work on stuff or, or anything like that?
Balancing Tour and Life
00:28:19
Speaker
Or is it just complete, like hit the reset button, unplug, I'll get with you guys in a month and we'll, we'll, we'll come back together.
00:28:27
Speaker
No, not at all. that's completely but we We separate and then we spent a lot of time in the van mixing our grown ass smells and we're like, let's give it a little while.
00:28:42
Speaker
But no, I mean, to a certain extent. Yeah. um But me and Jason... corroborate a lot um on material. We'll send each other stuff back and forth with them when when the mood is right. you know But um most of the time, um we we take a good break.
00:29:00
Speaker
I don't know. I think that's a good way to put it. Jason probably reaffirmed that. Yeah. yeah like I think it's it's just worked for us. we've We did the three shows a weekend.
00:29:18
Speaker
three times a month thing for, you know, a couple of years and it wore on us and we were still running our own sound. Spencer was, you know, doing the grunt work of running the actual sound, but we're all having a load in the PA and lights and then staying after the show when we want to hang out with our, whoever came to the show.
00:29:43
Speaker
And instead we're rolling cables for another 45 minutes and, doing that, you know, two, three times a week, not even counting the solo or the duo stuff that Spencer and I do during the week.
00:29:58
Speaker
And it was, it was wearing on us. Yeah. And you can feel it. And so that was just a decision that we made. Let's, let's give a hundred percent when we're doing it, but we don't have to do it all the time. And part of that's just growing as a band and,
00:30:16
Speaker
starting to have a little more success that you don't take those exact shows all the time anymore. You're not going to play the same spots every two months and not running sound anymore. That's one of our things.
00:30:32
Speaker
Essentially we're, we're not going to do that much anymore unless there's a ah good reason to do so. It just takes away when we're tired, especially in Texas. I mean, it's supposed to be 107 tomorrow and like it's May when you're setting up a full PA with subs and rolling cables. And we've got like eight guitars on stage. Like,
00:30:53
Speaker
You've got to get there four hours before the show and then, you know, just it just takes away from the show because you'll literally, when you have a long week and you're on that Saturday night show and it's 1130, you will literally be thinking about, damn it.
00:31:09
Speaker
Like, we're on the last song, but we've got another hour of rolling cables and the trailer and that That definitely is the worst part of being in a band is rolling cables and putting equipment. yeah So we've at least gotten to the point where most of the shows that we're playing is house sound. And we don't have to worry about that anymore. Most of the time.
00:31:31
Speaker
Yeah. In the central Texas, it was 10 hours, direction just to get out of the shit. Yeah. Right. Yeah. in the central texas was ten hours any direction just to get out of the shit ah yeah No, I get that and I understand that. You you burn out quick, you burn out fast. I totally understand being exhausted and mean you know you're doing all that day on work when you know you got you guys need somebody else to do all that for you.
00:31:59
Speaker
You guys are the rock stars, damn it. Don't they know that? Yeah, we got one crew. We got a lot on that. yeah Cooge is our tour manager who joined us recently.
00:32:12
Speaker
He hasn't gone on tour with us yet, but on our one-offs around like our festivals or whatever we're doing, he's done a great job. So I think he's gonna be a great asset for us on the road.
00:32:30
Speaker
At worst, an extra driver. Hey, you there ain't nothing wrong with that. was gonna say, do you guys, do you guys get out of Texas? I mean, now granted, like you said, Central Texas, it's 10 hours either direction to get out of out of the damn state or whatever.
Beyond Texas: Expanding Audiences
00:32:46
Speaker
You know, it's a long drive, you know. Do you guys get out of Texas a lot, or have you gotten the opportunity to get outside of Texas and play and and introduce your sound to other places?
00:32:58
Speaker
Well, when we first started, it was definitely... But just to go back a tiny bit, we we hit it really hard, like just in central Texas and for the first year.
00:33:08
Speaker
And the second year, it was like, ah we didn't even realize we were doing it, but we're like, we're getting out into all the other parts of Texas. And then it wasn't until last year when we were like, you know what, i with it's about time to probably extend the market. And so we, ah last year was the first time we actually started extending beyond the borders of the Lone Star State.
00:33:33
Speaker
But yeah, <unk> we're getting out there now. Actually, two two years ago, we i think we headed out twice. We went to Chicago, right out outside Chicago to play Summer Solstice Fest for the first time. Oh, that's right. That's right. That was two years ago.
00:33:50
Speaker
Yeah. And then we we also went up Steamboat Music Fest and did the yeah the Rebecca Creek Whiskey Showcase. We did that two years in a row. So we did that in 2023 and 2024. And then we did Summer Solstice Fest in Chicago, 2023 2024.
00:34:09
Speaker
But our first tours, our national tours were last year. we had like an 11 state tour, went up to Wisconsin and looped back through like Nebraska and Kansas, Iowa and all that.
00:34:25
Speaker
That was, so that was last year. And then we also had little bit further into Ohio. Yeah. um We're getting close. know,
00:34:39
Speaker
ah yeah in ohio yeah Yeah, I'm in Ohio. Oh, you're in Ohio? That's you guys should be yeah you guys You guys would be a hit, especially in my my area.
00:34:52
Speaker
We've got some bands that are similar to you guys. but What's your area? i'm in I'm in Central Ohio, down by Columbus. Okay, okay, sorry. We've got some bands that...
00:35:05
Speaker
come out of Pittsburgh and some other surrounding areas and even some local bands to Ohio that are similar to your guys' style and not exactly the same, obviously, but similar. And and when they come to my area where I live, man, they are, dude, people eat it up, man. They pack the bars.
00:35:24
Speaker
I was just at a show this weekend, went and seen North of Nashville, and they're out of Pittsburgh, and they play Buckeye Lake here every summer.
00:35:36
Speaker
And they just pack it out everywhere they go. it's It's crazy how how much like the people in the area soak up ah the ah local, you you want to call it local music, yeah and head out, especially in the summertime to get on the lake and and to, Iowa loves y'all.
00:35:57
Speaker
That sounds like a nice place to consider. We should consider that. That sounds nice. Oh, my my mom died.
00:36:09
Speaker
Don't. And unfortunately fortunately for Ohio, I live in i live and the center of the state, and it's two hours for me in any direction to reach Cleveland, Cincinnati. I don't have to do that eight-hour, 10-hour drive just to hit the border.
00:36:26
Speaker
For real. So even if you guys even if you guys sneak into Ohio, you're no more than like two and a half hours away from me. Yeah.
00:36:35
Speaker
Well, I know that on the upcoming tour, whenever it is in fall, we're going to start booking dates for that soon. Now that we know tentative timeline, I know we're going to be in Chicago and that'll be on like probably a Friday or Saturday night.
00:36:53
Speaker
But I mean, i we're always looking to grow a little bit. You know, we don't want to overextend and do an entire tour of places that we've never been. But, you know,
00:37:04
Speaker
growing it a little bit, you know, work. So I have to look at the Ohio as well.
Aiming for Global Music Dreams
00:37:13
Speaker
Um, well, I'm at least one fan in Ohio that would be appreciative of that. There you go. That's one more than last month. would thank you hang I could bring some people. I'll introduce some people. Don't worry.
00:37:28
Speaker
Um, no, that's cool. I, that is that something that you guys would like to, i know you like to take your breaks and stuff like that, but I mean, I'm assuming obviously like any musicians is something that you guys would, if you're not already doing it, like to do full time and be able to make a living off of it and travel. I don't know if you want to go to different countries or not, but yeah, absolutely. I think that's our goal.
00:37:57
Speaker
Our, our end game is, is to be able to do this full time and, I would love go to Europe, UK, some other people that you know we're buddies with have done it, and they have really good things to say about it.
00:38:13
Speaker
We've got to get our drummer's immigration status figured out before we try to cross the pond. We got kicked out of England or something. We've got to figure that out. but It sounds like we need to have your drummer on here because that sounds like there's a story behind that.
00:38:30
Speaker
yeah Yeah, I don't remember what it is, but he's been on tour with a band and something happened. I don't know what. i just I don't remember either, but i remember he was held up at immigration or something. or They had like a six-hour talk with him or something. He tells it way better. it's it He's like the nicest guy, too. He's yeah is the the voice of reason when things get chaotic on the road.
00:38:59
Speaker
um When we're all getting sick of everything we're in Kansas City or something, some shitty bar and Paul's the voice of reason.
00:39:11
Speaker
So for him for him to have issues makes me a little scared for the rest of us who don't know how to act. You're almost getting a little too specific. yeah um It makes me a little nervous for you guys that he's the voice of reason and he's the only one that's been kicked out of an entire country.
00:39:29
Speaker
but I mean, I haven't tried yet, so I guess... Sounds like you guys... It sounds like you guys need to you know go back and circle around your life decisions in your friend circle. Well, that's why we're musicians.
00:39:48
Speaker
Yeah. I feel you. i feel you. No, I do the same thing. My my circle of idiots here on the network is questionable.
00:40:01
Speaker
Yeah. i ah this so But I love them. They're my idiots. It's the end of the day. Yeah. There you go. ah Now, um when it when it comes to writing songs for you guys, because, you know, obviously anybody who's listened, anybody out there, if you haven't listened, actually, before I go into my next question, this is how my brain works, 700 miles an hour in 27 different directions.
Accessing Memphis Key's Music
00:40:27
Speaker
um Let everybody know where they can find you guys at and and and hear your music and listen to you guys and and check you guys out.
00:40:37
Speaker
um Most of the normal places. I don't know if we're on anything that's not, don't know, anything special. It's going to be memphiskey.com. It's going to links to everything.
00:40:49
Speaker
Spotify is where we've had the most success streaming. And then I got, you know, we'll have some videos on YouTube where we have a music video being produced, edited right now.
00:41:02
Speaker
I'm supposed to get a rough draft in the next couple of days of that video for, uh, I'll come running. Um, we shot that live. We, uh, we played the kickoff party for two step in that big country music fest. And we played on the steps of the historic courthouse there in Georgetown, Texas.
00:41:27
Speaker
Um, so we shot a video of there. going to have that coming out on the day of the single release. So there'll be something else there on YouTube. And then um we have, we'll have other videos for songs that aren't singles that will be more pointed towards social media.
00:41:48
Speaker
And one of those is already done that we've shot. So yeah, YouTube, TikTok, we mess around with from time to time. We got to step that up when the when the record's out.
00:41:59
Speaker
And then you'ren normalmal your normal stuff. We are going to vinyl with this release, so we will have records for sale for the first time with this one. We've had a lot of conversation about that so far. It sounds like a lot of people are going buy that up quick. so if you yeah no Vinyl's back, man. People people are back are into it.
00:42:24
Speaker
you know they they They love it. um I'm a fan of it myself. I have a a giant, uh, I gotta, I gotta find somebody who can work on it. Um, which is not an easy task, but I've got this giant console like grandma and grandpa used to have that takes six men and ah and a boy to even think about lifting it up and moving it.
00:42:44
Speaker
Um, but everything sounds great. there's just a record player stopped working on it, but the speakers still sound great. It's from the seventies. Um, and I've got a whole, chest full of vinyls, man.
00:42:57
Speaker
I, and I love throwing them on there and listening to them from time to time. My kids have even started listening to to vinyls. yeah because they're like It just sounds different. I'm like, yeah. It sounds cool. it's like It's gritty. It's real. It's raw. you know i mean It's it'ss just something different.
00:43:13
Speaker
You got to keep it alive me
Songwriting Inspirations
00:43:21
Speaker
Where I was going to go with that was when it comes to your guys' songwriting. because you know You guys... ah have You guys are just kind of a little bit all over the place from love songs to storytelling to... Wait till you hear the new record. You know, good party songs to even... And one of my favorite songs that I've been listening to, i don't know how many times I've listened to it. I think the other day I listened to it like six times in a row.
00:43:48
Speaker
I love this fucking song, Salmon Cake. You know, so yeah yeah like a good old-fashioned story just... The scumbag gets his at the end and the good guy yeah gets to go on. You're like such a great song, man.
00:44:02
Speaker
So you guys are kind of a little all over the place. So when it comes to songwriting for you guys, you know you guys said earlier that you do do some stuff together, you write together and whatnot. What do you guys write from? Where do you get your inspiration to to write from?
00:44:17
Speaker
Well, Sam and Kate was Jason's song before I even knew Jason. So, or Memphis, as I should say. he He can tell you all about that. But um yeah, maybe you should go and give you a little start here.
00:44:33
Speaker
um Back then, when i that was one of the that was on the EP, the 6th and San Jacinto EP, which is the first record, I guess, release.
00:44:46
Speaker
And i was still in the mode of sitting down and with a goal to write a song today, you know, I don't really do that anymore. I felt like I didn't have as much success doing that, that if, if I just wait until I have a reason to write something or something's going on and I'm like, you know what, this is interesting. Let me, let me go, you know, on the back porch and think about it.
00:45:13
Speaker
And that's worked, you know, coming up with different angles to look at something. Um, But I usually wait until it comes in. The weird thing is I won't write a song for three or four months, but then I'll write two or three of them in a month.
00:45:29
Speaker
And I'm also not one of those guys that like some people I'm friends with. They write songs in their sleep. they They write songs constantly.
00:45:40
Speaker
Then they filter through the hundreds of songs they've written to find the good ones. I, ah you mentioned ADHD. I'm ADHD as well. spen So is Spencer. We're all idiots. And yeah so live the club my friends I will not finish the song. If I don't already think it's going to be a keeper, I'll just, it's gone. I don't care about it. If if I'm like, you know, I'm not feeling Cause if you don't love it when you're writing it, you're definitely not going to love it after you've played it 500 times. And yeah,
00:46:10
Speaker
So that's how I do it. I'll i'll start writing something and then I'll trash it, you know, if I'm not feeling it. And sometimes I'll work on a song and then come back to it, though, six months later, or I'll send a memo, a voice memo to Spencer or do a quick scratch video and send it to him.
00:46:29
Speaker
um And we'll do it like that. And then he he'll write some, and then he'll share his Google Drive folder with some like sketches or sometimes complete songs.
00:46:41
Speaker
And and then we'll go from there as well. Yeah, it's a very similar process. ah One thing that we don't do is you'll see a lot of people or a lot of other bands just try to like force it a lot. Like, we got to get all these songs out there or but they're they'll just release anything and everything. And there's like, there's some gold nuggets in there, but some others are like, eh, we can probably revamp on that. But we we we have a little process where we, it's almost like a, like a hierarchy for me at least. And I think Jason kind of thinks the same way where I've probably written,
00:47:21
Speaker
I'll write maybe one to 10 songs a month, but nothing ever sees the light unless if I'm like, you know what? I found myself accidentally playing this song that I wrote yesterday a month ago. Like i I played it a hundred times. I'm like, maybe there's something to it.
00:47:38
Speaker
And then at that point it's like, but let's Let's give it to the guys and see what they think about it. Or let's come back to this when we're ready. It's always from like an inspirational point instead of let's manufacture something.
00:47:53
Speaker
And I think that's what kind of makes our sound a little special because formulated. It's not... formulaulateted it's not um it's not tailored to anybody. It's just real. And it's what we feel. And it's a mix of what we all do together. And it's, that's what makes it enjoyable on stage playing it every single time.
00:48:18
Speaker
You know, if that makes sense. Yeah. No, and you know, whether it's inspired by, I see you down there too, starting to ship the song.
00:48:30
Speaker
ma'am uh yeah sometimes you know you know things are inspired by real life uh you know something that happens to you in real life but you don't know how many people are going to be able to relate to to what you're what you're singing or what you write down i mean you know uh a lot of people might have a you know something similar in their lives uh you know that they can attach to that song you know uh no matter what it is at the end of the day and uh
00:48:58
Speaker
so you Yeah, that's how we approach it pretty much. yeah Yeah. you know i've I've talked to guys who have literally been just hanging out in a Mexican restaurant and a song pops into their head because they're hanging out with their friends and they have to grab a napkin and write it down.
00:49:14
Speaker
that like like like that i'm I'm old school. I got this notebook that will be I have one person in charge of burning this when I die. Not because there's anything bad in it.
00:49:26
Speaker
just i just If you read it, you're going to think I was a raving lunatic because I just scribble things that only make sense to me at the end of the day, but they're my ideas. And and then i have that I have my guy here, Blaze, that I'm like, hey, I have an idea.
00:49:40
Speaker
And it's either he'll either tell me it's a good idea or a bad idea. Like you said, Spencer, that hierarchy of if it's gonna if it's going to get past the tablet or the the the notepad or whatever was of
00:49:53
Speaker
or is this just a dumb idea? It has to make it past. My song has to make it past me and then it has to go to Jason. And then if it makes it to Jason and then he's like, okay, let's show it to the boys. And then it's like something comes from
Creating on the Road
00:50:10
Speaker
that that. That's kind of the new formula we're starting here. And I think that's some of our favorite songs on the new album that we're excited to show people because it's a completely different direction from the first album.
00:50:22
Speaker
Yeah, mine starts with a scribble. I scribble mine on into the notes app. That's the first thing. And then if it starts looking good, then pen and paper come out. yeah And then once I get some sort of a form, usually i need ah one verse and one course.
00:50:39
Speaker
Then I'll send it to Spencer and see what he thinks about it. And then like one time, um which this song is nuts. It's almost metal. it's It's on the record. It's ah I had an idea that was based off a riff and I wanted ah just a balls to the wall, just loud, fast,
00:51:05
Speaker
drum, guitar, attitude. and And it was really based off of Queens of the Stone Age song and just the vibe of the song. not Not the riff, but the vibe of the song.
00:51:17
Speaker
And we talked about it for a while. And then I had mentioned it to Spencer a couple of times while we were riding the gigs. And when we were in Colorado last summer, we were staying, we had played a show at a brewery and part of it was they put us up in an Airbnb above the brewery.
00:51:35
Speaker
which was nice because we would literally walk downstairs to get beers. oh yeah And so they put us up in this apartment. It was nice, but that's when I heard the riff for the first time.
00:51:47
Speaker
And I started adding some of the lyrics and we came up with this song that we wrote. Now that I'm thinking about it, we wrote three of the songs in the record while we were on tour as a band. So, um, we wrote one in,
00:52:02
Speaker
Iowa, we wrote one in Omaha, Nebraska, and we wrote one in Steamboat, Colorado. So, but yeah, that was a different way. It was an just an idea of a vibe. And it matched up and it worked. And so on the we were looking for the 10th song. We wanted to get 10 songs on the record.
00:52:20
Speaker
And we were looking for that 10th song and we went back to that. We're hey, look, we did this. Let's bring it back out and see what it sounds like actually playing it as a band. And when it started happening, it was like, holy shit.
00:52:32
Speaker
can we do this? And then everyone unanimously was like, our producer, Adam Oder, who's won like five Grammys, so we trust him. ah you know sounds like that's what he's doing. Yeah, it's like, is this too much?
00:52:46
Speaker
Or can we do this? He's like, fuck yeah. And so... The famous Adam line. Fuck yeah. And so that's what we did. It's going on there and it is loud and fast. and But that was ah another way that we wrote songs, written a song.
00:53:04
Speaker
And of those three songs too, those are the most reciprocated ones that we've played so far. At our last show when we did the recording for I'll Come Runnin', the very few people who knew of this song were like, what's the $20 change? $20 don't change.
00:53:22
Speaker
don say Oh, yeah. It's fun to see. They were getting a little crunk, but you knew that that yeah it's becoming a fan favorite real quick. Yeah.
00:53:32
Speaker
It's called $1,000 Boots and $20 Chain, so the song's called $20 Chain. and But, yeah, it's quickly becoming a favorite. Another song we wrote on the road, you know, we're not giving anything away. It's song about this dude getting abducted by aliens.
00:53:47
Speaker
It's called Pedro. People fucking love that song. Yeah. Yeah. That's my favorite song. There's that one. yeah they they They love it. That's the song that has like essentially guitar battle for the whole second half of the song.
00:54:02
Speaker
kind I'll just want get a little a little special VIP listening to that. oh i I can shoot you over a preview.
00:54:13
Speaker
Yeah. That sounds crazy. No, man, loud, fast, heavy. Those one of those songs that you that that comes out ah out of left field, especially you know for you guys. And again, a new fan, ah you know you don't expect it, but it's one of those songs that you crank the stereo up, drop the windows down, and find a back country road and just hammer down and just go and listen to the music, man.
00:54:39
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. For sure, like a lot of our songs are like that, though, too. like I think that's maybe that's our genre. It's windows down in a truck on a bad.
00:54:52
Speaker
Yeah. Like I said, even like come pick me up, man, you're you're going through it, but you're not going to let it get you fucked up. So you're just like, fuck it. I'm I'm heading to the bar. I'm going out tonight, bitch.
00:55:03
Speaker
Come pick me up. Fuck my friends. Yeah, I don't care. It's one arm out the window, cigarette in the other hand, driving 15 at least
Sponsorship Support
00:55:12
Speaker
over the speed. Beer between your legs. Yeah, between your legs. Speaking of beer, this segment is brought to you by Shiner, Odile. Mexican style racing.
00:55:22
Speaker
speaking of my ear this segment is brought to you by schiner totally no's gonna start crazy Also, I'm in party mode. It's year 30, and I got done showing some insurance today, so we're wearing the the the Shiner shirt.
00:55:37
Speaker
That's a nice shirt. Are you guys sponsored by Shiner by chance? We are. Nice. Hell yeah. Absolutely. don't retir That was that would just being stupid. They don't require that. Absolutely. Shout them out then. Damn. Yeah, they require, but I like They've helped us along and our buddy Joe, he's he's our rep there. He's, he's been a buddy even before this. We actually years and years ago, Joe and I worked at a brewery together.
00:56:07
Speaker
When I was just getting music started, actually, that brewery was one of the first shows I played. This is 10, 11 years ago. ten eleven years ago So he he has moved on to bigger and better things. And, you know, I've progressed. And so he's a shiner now. So we got to come back together and work together. And, yeah, they've helped us play for tours. And they keep us stocked up with silly shirts like Spencer has and cold beer.
00:56:38
Speaker
Shit. Miller Lite, you listening? I need a sponsor. There you go. There you go. I'm just reading your stuff for free. Live on these shows for four years, damn it.
00:56:51
Speaker
but Yeah. Time to hook a brother up. I want you to take my water with that headset on. I need a Mexican pizza, sir.
00:57:02
Speaker
I need him to mumble into it. Would you like some sauce with that?
00:57:08
Speaker
to mumble into it oh yeah would you like some sauce with that
00:57:18
Speaker
yeah we i see i see the miller that's a good second go-to whenever uh we're out of state and they don't gotta gotta got some shiner shiner seems to be pretty popular up up here um i don't know about the bars because i don't know about the bars because i switched to miller light a few years back and uh it's been my go-to ever since but when i go to like the um A grocery store and stuff like that. Shiner's always there. and our Our local Kroger's, they got a whole fucking section of it.
00:57:49
Speaker
I think I've tried one or two. Nice. yeah nice like By far, our favorite the Orale. Sorry, I cut you off. What is the... yeah as as As the white folk in Ohio say, Orale.
00:58:05
Speaker
Orale. I'm from Iowa, and I said it wrong for two months straight. a mexican Mexican style. but Nice. Okay. good what What if we got that ah all the way out here in Ohio? i have to check it out. It is my favorite.
00:58:22
Speaker
on On the recommendation of ah Memphis Key, they said it's good beer. So if I drink it, it is. and Yeah,
00:58:34
Speaker
yeah no, i say I say it wrong all the time. I've got i've got friends out in Texas. I've got friends in Mexico. And I say it wrong just to just to piss with them.
00:58:46
Speaker
Ordele Vato. And they're like, it's not David Johnson.
00:59:01
Speaker
as a they I want to come to Texas so so so bad because there's so many kick-ass bands out there. i just want to come and hang out with They're everywhere. Even like a Tuesday night, they're they're everywhere. so when you guys When you guys are on stage, what is your what is your stage presence like?
Stage Presence and Energy
00:59:22
Speaker
You guys put on a show for the audience. or I'm always curious about that because I've seen some bands that I don't care about, like like Kiss. not a big fan of Kiss. Kiss go to hell, especially Eugene Simmons.
00:59:33
Speaker
I like a few of your songs. But, dude, if you ever get to if you ever got the chance to see them, well, they say they're they're retired. But I got the opportunity to see them back in while, forever ago, for their Psycho Circus tour.
00:59:48
Speaker
They put on a hell of a fucking show. buddy mine was a huge Kiss fan, and we went, and I was just thoroughly impressed because, I mean, lasers, explosions, monsters, Gene doing what Gene does, and it was like, holy crap, the music sucks, but this is cool.
01:00:04
Speaker
and So but what is your guys' is stage presence like, or you know do you guys interact with the audience and and the crowd and stuff like that? Do you get the crowd involved? um I do.
01:00:17
Speaker
Yeah. so ah Jason gets a better perspective than... Yeah. um It's emotion, I think, like good or bad or into whatever song we're doing.
01:00:34
Speaker
Or if it's a lighthearted song, then that that emotion might just be interaction with the crowd, making eye contact, all that stuff. But then we get into the ones that are maybe...
01:00:45
Speaker
or maybe have some feelings behind them, like you'll see it, like we'll get into it. We'll probably play a little harder. um Like when we do come pick me up, it's always been the last song that we play and we leave it like sports analogies. We leave it on the floor. Like I'm going to hold that last power note as long as I can. And he's going to rip his solo as hard as he can. And we want that to be like what they remember.
01:01:15
Speaker
And, even before the full band, which now that we have the band, everyone's on board, everyone, we all, we don't have to talk. We can see what's going on with each other. And we know the plan, you know without discussing it. And so, but even before then, when we were still a three or four piece, we opened up for famous band and we get to the merch table after our opening set.
01:01:46
Speaker
we noticed what we're watching. Um, and then other people start noticing and we start selling more merch than we've ever sold after our set was over because people just saw, they, they just said, it just seemed like y'all give a shit.
01:02:04
Speaker
Um, y'all, y'all gave it your all. And then had, you know, it was going to spend a hundred dollars on blanks stuff, but he's calling it in again.
01:02:16
Speaker
I'd rather support people who are trying and who give a shit about being here tonight. And so that is one thing that we do. You never know who's watching and who, who might end up being a fan for the next 10 years or, or whatever.
01:02:32
Speaker
That show right there, I think we ended up getting some big private gig for new year's Eve. So you just never know who you're playing for. So I don't know. I heard this. Somebody else said it first and it wasn't me, but,
01:02:47
Speaker
every show is Madison Square Garden. Yeah. And I'm not saying we've done that successfully because we've played some stinkers where it was me and I, usually it's a duo show where there's like, you know, there's a handful of people there.
01:03:02
Speaker
Our full band shows generally, there's going to be a decent turnout, but every now and then you never know. Like you might be in a random city you've never played before playing some blacked out shitty bar with,
01:03:16
Speaker
And you never know who's going to show up if the local openers don't bring anybody either. And so yeah those happen, but they're rare. But even those, we we're going to give it our all every single time.
01:03:30
Speaker
So that's generally what we're doing. Now, that's awesome.
Memorable Performances
01:03:35
Speaker
That's cool to hear. there was ah There was a local band here. Unfortunately, they they yeah they have since broken up.
01:03:42
Speaker
They were amazing. I got to see them the first time I went to... to Texas boys, Blacktop Mojo, they came to Columbus. they're They're friends of ours here on the network.
01:03:53
Speaker
Yeah. And I was like, I got to go see the guys. I mean, they're right down the road. And they had one of the opening acts. And these kids were fucking amazing. And I got to talk to these guys after the show and and got to know them a little bit better. And we traded information. And the lead singer hit me up a couple weeks later. And he was like, hey, man.
01:04:12
Speaker
We're playing in this town called Centerburg. You ever heard of it? I'm like, yeah. I was born there. This is little podunk-ass town in the middle of nowhere. And I was like, yeah. He's like, all right, are you free tonight? I said, yeah, man. He said, well, come on out. So went out.
01:04:27
Speaker
And they were in this, like, bar slash pizzeria. There was, like, 20 people there. But they put on a show like there was 100,000 people in there. He was crazy.
01:04:38
Speaker
the lead singer was running through the bar. He was dancing on the tables. He was singing. like He was having a fucking ball, man. and The people that were there were like, we don't know who these kids are, but they're amazing and they're fun.
01:04:50
Speaker
you know They did some of their original stuff, but they did a lot of covers, but they're like, everybody was having fun because they brought that energy. and and I've seen bands where they they go to a podunk, like a little dive bar. I love me a good dive bar. Don't get me wrong. and It's just like, I just seen you two weeks ago a at a bigger bar and the show was amazing. And now I see you here and it's ads like, come on, dude, where's that energy you had before. So that's cool that you, you said that you keep that kind of energy and, uh, you know, you, no matter how many people are there, do you guys, are you guys the type of people who like to, uh, interact like after your show or before your show, like to interact with, uh, with the audience, the people who are there. And if if you can get out there and kind of hang out and have a beer or whatever with people.
Fan Interaction and Local Exploration
01:05:40
Speaker
we We love being out of town. but I think because we don't do it all the time, that we still appreciate it. be like One of the best times we had on tour, which the show was okay.
01:05:54
Speaker
It wasn't empty. It wasn't packed. And the people there really enjoyed it. But we played in Appleton, Wisconsin. We had so much fun after the show. walking around Appleton, going into bars. I mean, some of the bars we quickly left because we were in the wrong element.
01:06:11
Speaker
we we went do this we'll do this one more We went to this one bar and we walked in and immediately the people in front of us and the people in line behind us, not really in our age group or dressed anything like us, but this is where a lot of people were.
01:06:29
Speaker
So we go in. We get beers. The bartender kind of looks at us like, what the fuck y'all doing here? yeah but Y'all don't belong here. We don't like your kind.
01:06:42
Speaker
Kind of. like The people sitting at the bar were even looking at us like, what are they doing here? so After like 30 minutes, we're sitting at this table and we're just we're kind of laughing at ourselves like, we don't belong here.
01:06:56
Speaker
ah ah couple of police officers walked in that were just doing bar checks. I was like, hey, like we're out of place.
01:07:07
Speaker
And then the cop was like, yeah, y'all need to go that way. go I guess where the old people bars were. Jason used to be a part of law enforcement too, so they like picked him out immediately. Oh, wait, were you Jason?
01:07:23
Speaker
Yeah. yeah but So the police officers come in and he's like, people I can talk to their cop radar went off.
01:07:34
Speaker
but they they they there their their cop radar went off du didoo do did you do there he age immediately I think what it is, is it's a lack of fear ah Because I know how it works.
01:07:48
Speaker
And I guess I'm not as scared of interactions with them. Because I i guess I've been there. And I've noticed not everybody in the band. There's a couple of people in the band that are, you know, not not talking shit.
01:08:04
Speaker
They are literally scared to deal with cops in any way. Like, we got pulled over one time. Clearly not the drummer who's been kicked out of an entire country. Clearly Very comfortable around law enforcement. He deals with the queen of England.
01:08:20
Speaker
and ah but like, I just, I guess I've been around it and it doesn't bother me. So I guess they get that because it's not the only time that's happened.
01:08:32
Speaker
But yeah, they, they steered us in the right direction. They like, y'all go that way. And we ended up going to this bar that was a year round Christmas theme. Oh, it was awesome. Dob bar, but it's just nothing. But I mean, every inch of the place is red, green, bells, pencil, whatever.
01:08:51
Speaker
We had a hell of a time there and then went to another bar. We love going and hanging out afterwards because we ran into people at our show. They're like, Hey, Memphis key.
01:09:01
Speaker
Like, yeah. Like, what are y'all doing? Like we're on tour. We don't have a home right now. We're, We're hanging out with y'all.
01:09:10
Speaker
Everyone's Jagerbombs, you know, whatever. ah yeah we we do enjoy it. Yeah, there's blazing A's. No, that's one of the cool things. Even even like for me, if if i if I travel, you know, if I, one of the things I'm doing this year, and you know artists that I've interviewed on here on this show, if they get within three ah three hours or so from from where I'm at, I'm going to make the trip and go see them and whatnot.
01:09:35
Speaker
But I always try to find a hotel that's close to all of the bars so that I can walk to them and I can check out the the local scene. You know what mean? I want to see what the local scene is, especially if they have live music.
01:09:48
Speaker
what's up I feel you guys, man. i've I've walked into some places where it was like, hmm. yeah You know, like Sesame Street once said, one of these things don't belong.
01:10:00
Speaker
No. It happened the other day to me and my wife. We went to Denver for our anniversary. So we were there. the The reason for the trip was to see Turnpike yeah and Robert O'Keefe at Red Rocks, which was awesome.
Concert Experiences at Red Rocks
01:10:17
Speaker
It was amazing. but So we did that Friday night. And then Saturday, it was our wedding anniversary as Robert went. So we were like, hey, Saturday will be our like going out, celebrating.
01:10:29
Speaker
Mm-hmm. So before our dinner, we're like, hey, ah you know, this rooftop bar up here, everyone's got, you know, it's great reviews. It looks directly at the Rockies. Supposedly the highest rooftop bar in Colorado.
01:10:42
Speaker
Let's go. we get on the wait. We waited like 30 minutes. Wasn't too bad. But we get up there. And i'm I'm in my cowboy hat and ostrich boots.
01:10:54
Speaker
And she's got her hat on. No boots, but Definitely like a Texas vibe to what she's wearing. and we go in and it couldn't have been more of a collection of people that wish they lived in Miami.
01:11:11
Speaker
It just, I mean, there was like three different guys that look like Pitbull. And I'm walking through to try to find us a place. I'm like, hey, I'm going walk down there. You can stay here. I'm going to go find us a seat, hopefully, because it was first come, first serve up there.
01:11:27
Speaker
yeah And I did all the walkthrough. And when I got to the main area, they were looking at me like my skin was green.
01:11:37
Speaker
I swear to God. They were stopping conversations, i you know seeing people hit each other and being like, it was like they hadn't seen it. i don't know. Maybe I shouldn't have been up there.
01:11:49
Speaker
I don't know. But we got the fuck out of there as soon as we finished our drinks. It went somewhere and more appropriate for us. So that I'm used to that happening to me.
01:12:03
Speaker
um But I did enjoy my old fashion in the meantime. Yeah, all right? it's it's always It's always funny when you when you walk into a place like that and you're like,
01:12:17
Speaker
yeah know Like you said, like everybody was just right out of Miami. Like ah like ah the the set of Miami Vice back in the day. you know like ah Bright pink shirts, white white blas you know white blazers, whatever. you know like yeah What's happening here?
01:12:38
Speaker
i ah Spencer's little... That's the picture from the courthouse where we were playing on his little Oh, yeah, yeah. are Or whatever. That's us on the steps of that courthouse there. Yeah, check out their check out their Instagram and stuff like that. They got the pictures up from the courthouse on Instagram and stuff like that. um But sometimes it's sometimes it's fun to walk into those places where where you know you don't belong, and then you just stay just because you want to make everybody...
01:13:09
Speaker
Kind of a little, just a, just a little uncomfortable and a little, ah little uneasy, you know, like, yeah what's it what's what's he going to do? Absolutely. If there had been a seat for us to sit, I would have sat right in the middle, but I didn't want to sit there and stare at everybody and wait for something to open up.
01:13:29
Speaker
knew someone was going eventually piss me off and I didn't want to ruin our anniversary. There you go. Um, So I know you guys were doing the show or went to do, or went to see the show and everything like that.
01:13:42
Speaker
How, how was it? How was, was that your first experience at Red Rocks or? Okay. We went to see Turnpike in 22, right. When they came back out of retirement. um
01:13:55
Speaker
I mean, it's hard to beat the first time because it's the first time you you've seen all of it and experienced it. It's, it's beautiful. And so But I don't know. I think the show the show itself might have been better this time.
01:14:09
Speaker
They have some new songs that, God, they're amazing. they're i don't know if you've listened to their new record, but it's it's got a couple of classics on there at least. And so the show was great, and Robert O'Keefe was opener, and he's one of my favorites.
01:14:27
Speaker
And so Robert O'Keefe's a huge influence. His his storytelling, um and some people think I have a nasally voice that sounds like him as well sometimes. So that's a compliment.
01:14:39
Speaker
So seeing both of them together, cause we cover, we cover a couple of our real songs when we do covers. Um, and we do several turnpike songs, not all together anymore, but, um, we'll, we'll still throw Jen smoking lies in there here and there and a couple of, couple of other ones, but yeah, the show was amazing. It was beautiful. Um,
01:15:03
Speaker
Typical Denver May Day, I guess it was 70 78 in the daytime 58 55 by the end of the show, which is my I love that that cooler weather.
01:15:16
Speaker
So yeah, it was awesome. yeah Red Rocks is Red Rocks is definitely on my on my bucket list. I you know, it's it's almost like initially.
01:15:30
Speaker
If the opportunity presents itself, I'll almost see anybody there. Yeah. But there are, theyre you know, because I want to go so bad. I've seen videos and and and stuff from Red Rocks, and it looks amazing.
01:15:42
Speaker
and And it sounds amazing. Yeah. But, you know, obviously there's there's some acts that, you know, if they were there and, i and the and and then and again, if the opportunity was there, I would absolutely, but without missing a beat.
01:15:57
Speaker
go see them. But it's um it's it's one of those bucket list
Bucket List Venues and Influences
01:16:01
Speaker
venues for me. even Even Madison Square Garden is like, I've seen it from the outside. yeah But I'd almost go see just about anybody there just to be inside Madison Square Garden for a concert. Just to say that I was there. But no now after i after I got scolded when we were talking on Instagram, I did go and check it out.
01:16:25
Speaker
Yeah. check that's shit If you looked at our website, you would know. It's not going down, guys. I'm just fucking oh wait with Memphis. yeah What was that? I'm sorry.
01:16:41
Speaker
but Yeah, you were talking about going to the show, and asked if you guys were performing there because I thought that was really cool, and you're you were like, no, we're going to see them. They're they're listed on our on our website as our as our inspiration, you know, guys that we look up to, and I was just like, oh, shit, I haven't gotten that far yet because we were because we booked this interview, ah you know, a little bit out. We we booked this interview a little bit out. yeah, yeah.
01:17:08
Speaker
oh no so i remember being with my wife and i was like i think he thinks i was talking shit uh it's hard sometimes it's vague i guess you know when you don't get context but all i was trying to convey was like these guys are literally one of like the four three four influences on the band and they're literally in our bio that's how important they are to us and it came off as Hey, do your fucking research. Do your fucking homework, jackass. No, that's the thing with text. I'll turn my light on.
01:17:44
Speaker
He just got perpetually and perpetually darker. Yeah. when when you but I was like, oh shit, does he think I'm stupid? Am I getting yelled at right now? No, I'm not getting yelled at right now. Hold on second. It's so hard sometimes through text. Because trust me, there's times where all I'll type but ill type a message.
01:18:03
Speaker
And I'll delete it like six or seven times because I'm like, I fucking hate sending text messages. And sometimes, especially with artists that I get to know. And after they've been on here, I'm like, you know what? Fuck it. I'm not texting you. I'm just going to send you a voice message because I can't make this not sound like I'm being a dick or or not sound douchey.
01:18:25
Speaker
That's true. But yeah, for like just a brief second, I was like, oh shit, I fucked ah he'll be Yeah, like have I they'll be fine okay but yeah i remember that now. It's funny.
01:18:41
Speaker
um So we were talking a little bit earlier being on the road and I'm going to do this intentional because I still got you guys in my ear, but I just got to pop back here real quick. ah any any When you guys get together and you guys are touring,
01:18:57
Speaker
do you guys like to get into shenanigans and buckery when you're on the road? And if you have any stories that you can share, please feel free to share away. And I'm going to be listening and everybody else is going to be listening. so
01:19:12
Speaker
That's all we do. That's all you do. Well, I mean, like breakfast is always a good, good time to have fun, especially the night after ah and We're always trying to figure out um where we're going, who wants what.
01:19:31
Speaker
I don't know. I can't think of a specific thing off the top of my head, but I'm just trying to think here. Every night it's almost a shenanigan. or We'll try something different on stage. I don't know if anything like... Let's all dress like clowns or something crazy. but like I don't know.
01:19:49
Speaker
Jason might have some good... He's the storyteller here. You got one?
01:19:56
Speaker
You got to have at least one good like road story. Oh, Jesus, we lost Jason. He canceled himself. He was like, nope. He canceled himself.
01:20:08
Speaker
Nope. You could have just said, I don't want to share any story. And that's it. He's gone. Oh, don't put me on the spot. Let me think.
01:20:20
Speaker
Let me think. You're in charge now. You know what? I had a band send their drummer because nobody else could make it. And I was like, who is the genius that decided to put the drummer in charge to do the interview for the night? Because the drummers are typically nine times out of 10, the biggest wild card or the biggest loose cannon out of the entire band. and You never know what's going to happen. In our case, he's...
01:20:45
Speaker
He's the biggest mediator. He yeah knows what's going on. He's the organized guy. He knows he knows how to keep everybody in line. I don't know. Oh, man.
01:20:57
Speaker
I mean, there's there's a couple ah stories where um inebriation maybe have gone a little too far. The one in Appleton is probably a pretty good one.
01:21:12
Speaker
We lost you. Where'd you go? where have no idea. My screen literally shut off and I can't get it. i don't know. It's a Dell. I'm going to throw it away. that We're all chucking laptops at the end of this show. and Yeah, I'm over it.
01:21:29
Speaker
Shenanigans. You got a shenanigan? If you give me a little context of one, I'm sure we can... spar a good story out here.
01:21:41
Speaker
um i'm I'm sure the Statue of Limitations is is you guys are safe. Here we go. all right so What was that? prepared but Depends on which state. It depends on which state. Shenanigans and fuckery when you guys are on the road. You guys got any ah you got any road stories of, you know,
01:22:03
Speaker
Obviously, don't tell us you did anything illegal because my lawyer's not present and he's not here until Sundays. so but but
01:22:12
Speaker
I think we, I don't know. It's not like super juicy, but I know that I get a lot of shit from them because I was pretty persistent when trying to get a whiskey and Coke at a Waffle House
01:22:27
Speaker
one night. Yeah. Apparently the staff was having it. I don't remember that as much. So I don't know how Texas does texas does it, but I've been not that I'm not that I'm bragging about this in any way, shape or form, because nobody ever brags about going to Waffle House. It's just it is what it is.
01:22:48
Speaker
But I've never known them to serve alcoholic beverages. Again, I don't know how Texas does it. Sometimes you get a whiskey Coke. Sometimes you get a chair hurled at you across the room.
01:23:02
Speaker
but I know the chair situation. I have either been the hurly or the hurler. We've been the hurler that. That's for sure. That's the best way to say that. I'm trying to think.
01:23:18
Speaker
Of other safe things, you know, properly safe things. um No safe things. This is not a kid-friendly show. No, i'm not talking. i'm not I'm not even in a band.
01:23:30
Speaker
I'm not even in a band. I was emceeing one night for a band. What's up, Arliss? How you doing, brother, if you got your ears on? And I threw a drunk chick up on stage to dance with the band. So... I was told to, but i was told to. And then then all of sudden I was the bad guy. but
01:23:50
Speaker
but I was told to by the band's manager. Go ahead and get it let her get up on stage. All right, let me show her the stairs. No, pick her up. Okay. Okay. I know we've got more stuff, but on the top of my head, ah can't think of anything. Spencer?
01:24:09
Speaker
yeah i've I've had a couple of things that I can remember. i don't know if I'd call them shenanigans off the top of my head. There's so many shenanigans, but crazy things that happen on stage. There's a couple of things that happened there.
01:24:21
Speaker
but That's, i don't know why that's where why my mind's going right now. I had a, a very tall lady. This was before I played with Jason, but, I don't, I feel like it's applicable.
01:24:33
Speaker
We're talking about the strange, um, Yeah, a very tall lady in Chicago when I, cause I used to play in the, in Iowa and Minnesota and Illinois, a very tall lady at Old Crow down in Chicago came on stage and I don't even know where she came from. There was only maybe 16 people in that room and she materialized out of the air and she crawled onto the stage.
01:25:02
Speaker
And she pushed me. she She comes up to me and she pushes me and then grabs my mic. And I don't remember what she said, but I remember i was i was i would say um I would say I was a little livid when she pushed me. But she she turned around to me and she goes, come on, guys, let's just give them a show.
01:25:23
Speaker
but She goes back to the mic and she starts screaming. I don't remember. when I was so mad. I can't even remember what the dialogue was. But all I remember her saying was, let's give him show, guys. to Wave into our drummer, Timmy, at the time.
01:25:41
Speaker
Give him a show. What the hell do you think we're trying to do, lady? We are. You just weren't a part of the plan, you know? yeah good drunk Drunk chicks are never part of the plan. They just happen. and they you know they are It is. yeah at the and At the end of the day, you are in their element. and and you know It's kind of like going on a safari. you know Please don't feed the lions. and Unfortunately, drunk chicks in a bar, that is their element and that is their world. You're just vacationing there for the night.
01:26:24
Speaker
and I'm very tall. Okay, so you say very tall, Spencer. I got to ask, how tall are you? im I'm extremely average. Aggressively average.
01:26:36
Speaker
Aggressively average. Okay. i would I would say somewhere between five foot and six foot. that Five foot, I don't know. i'll have to look at my license. Somewhere between eight, nine, and ten.
01:26:54
Speaker
Somewhere between eight and nine. She like tall, almost a head taller than me. So she pushed me and I was like, God damn. She got a little violated. I was like, call me some names.
Touring Tales and Memories
01:27:11
Speaker
Slap me around. Call me Sally. She big Amazon bitch. and five foot to ah that A lot of the shenanigans, I don't know. um It's best to find, to remember shenanigans because you never remember them until you're going through your images and your gallery at 1 a.m.
01:27:39
Speaker
Three days later, you're like, what the hell? Sometimes it's like four months, a year later. three days later you're like what the hell so' like the war monch a year later Sometimes it's even like ah two years three years later yeah There's a lot of good times, especially in the early years when we were hitting it pretty hard.
01:27:58
Speaker
like I think we played, how many days are there in the year 365? We probably played at least 100 to 150 just between me and Jason and the band at the time. yeah There was a lot of time for Span Games. It was like 138. I think in 22, think that's what we played. we down a little.
01:28:18
Speaker
think that's what we played so cut it down a little that has a lot of time on the road. I mean, yeah.
Weekend and Weekday Gigs
01:28:30
Speaker
and yeah And you said you guys were doing three, three shows a weekend. So you're doing like, what, like Friday, a couple on Saturday or Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or sometimes it'd be a Sunday show, like a daytime show. Sometimes we would start with an acoustic on a Thursday night.
01:28:45
Speaker
And sometimes we were doing, yeah you know, random Tuesdays or random Wednesdays and doing a lot of private shows too back then. um but private parties and stuff so yeah it was a lot of them back then I think my computer died just FYI I've reset it the screen no longer works it is think it literally it got glicked yeah got glied it it is gone
01:29:19
Speaker
it is not working the lights on on keyboard but it's not working You guys been listening to other shows?
Glicked: A Humorous Take
01:29:28
Speaker
Getting glicked is something that happens a lot around here. What's glicked? Sometimes it's good.
01:29:32
Speaker
Sometimes it's not so good. If you're lady, getting glicked could be a very good thing. What would blaze ace say about
01:29:43
Speaker
but but ah i like getting gla be a very good yeah if you're what would bla a say about it Oh, don't, let's not ask him.
01:29:56
Speaker
He's been clicked a time or two. He knows what's up. I'll see behind the rest stop later, sweetie.
01:30:08
Speaker
Now, Blaze is my right hand man here on the network. That's my guy. That is my go-to guy for for for podcasting stuff, for life stuff. and that's just That's just my dude, man.
01:30:21
Speaker
That's my guy. Good to have a couple of those in your corner. At least one good one, know? Yeah, exactly. And he came out of nowhere. We've only been friends for about a year. But people have asked us, like, how long have you guys been friends? And I'm like, like a year And they're like, there's no fucking way you two have only been friends for like a year. And like, yeah, we are. You know, it is what it is.
01:30:43
Speaker
It's the shenanigans. We have a lot of shenanigans in fuckery. Ah, blazing up.
Halloween Party Antics
01:30:52
Speaker
We've had a lot of fuckery. Yeah. I'm all for the fuckery and I'm all for the shenanigans. We've, we've got to do some shows together. He's down in Kentucky, but he's, he's made the trip up here a couple of times, a couple of few times and we've done stuff together and we we have good time when we get together. We have fun.
01:31:11
Speaker
So ah we even had, I have never in my life done, ah we we did we were We were lucky enough to get invited to a local axe throwing place for their Halloween party.
01:31:25
Speaker
And just me being a smartass, I was like, we're gonna get matching costumes. What do you think of this? and and about an hour later and you know about an hour later, he's like, I ordered mine. I was like, oh, shit, I was joking. So we went to this Halloween party and did our show live at this Halloween party. And we had matching costumes. The only person I've ever had matching Halloween costumes with my life.
01:31:45
Speaker
So. What did you go as? We went as, it's on our Instagram, I believe. it was like It was like a hip-hop meets Saved by the Bell type thing.
01:32:02
Speaker
Just this past year? I got the yeah advantage of sitting at my computer and scrolling. Yeah, you're sitting at your computer. Yeah. Hey, Jason, how are going? Yeah.
01:32:14
Speaker
yeah but ah How about you tell ah Glick about your first show you've ever played? That might be a good one for him to hear. so oh Speaking of costumes. um ah ah Oh, hey, I got it back on.
01:32:30
Speaker
It was the year was 2001. October 28th.
01:32:36
Speaker
yeah it's like october twenty eight It's like you're telling a J.R.R. Tolkien novel. What was the weather like? so It was a mid-summer day in the Shire. the Shire.
01:32:53
Speaker
ah It was in a barn. It was in a barn. My first show was a Halloween show in a barn in Fayette County, Tennessee. um Got shut down by the deputies right after our break Right when we were getting, I think we were playing Rage Against the Machine at the time. And I was dressed as Britney Spears. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on a second. Hold on a second.
01:33:21
Speaker
Hit me, baby, one more time, Britney Spears? Like, skirt and schoolgirl? yeah ah Spencer, please tell me there's pictures of this somewhere. I was only six at the time, so I don't know.
01:33:33
Speaker
I had long hair, so I had him had my long hair in the pigtails uh my girlfriend at the time found me a sweater uh i don't know if they made skirts that big but i ended up finding something similar like kilt and so yeah uh i was i was 2001 hit me baby one more time britney spears playing bass in a barn
01:34:02
Speaker
it was cold it was cold it was so cold
01:34:08
Speaker
Coldest day the year that year. Nice. And everybody knew it. but and Everybody knew it. Oh, yeah. they It was obvious.
01:34:21
Speaker
I don't know if you can tell, Glick, we we like have fun. So shenanigans happen so often that we just don't remember. No. I dig it. I dig it. I like it. We do the same thing here, man. We we we are all for the shenanigans and the fuckery and...
Unscripted Saturday Nights
01:34:38
Speaker
And that's what we do on this network. yeah you we just We just have a good time and and have fun, especially Saturday nights, man. Like I said, Saturday nights are completely off the chain.
01:34:50
Speaker

Tour Hospitality
01:35:30
Speaker
and I'm waiting for it because I'm pretty sure we've had at least two serial killers on our show on Saturday night who and one of them murdered their entire family and they're in the basement.
01:35:42
Speaker
And I'm watching the news waiting for them to get caught because i'm like, we need to go find that episode right the fuck now. wow
01:35:54
Speaker
Wow. I'm getting, um, Play-by-play is from um Roxy, one of our good friends who also is a part of the shenanigans. She's is our merchandise queen. Okay, there you go. Nice.
01:36:06
Speaker
so and She likes to listen and tell about. She's she's got one that she'd like to share. She says, what about the time you ripped off your shirt on stage? That happened once before. Or the time that we partied with Sam Riggs.
01:36:22
Speaker
Yeah. yeah Wait, who ripped their shirt off? Oh, me, baby. That was my ultimate. Let's go. Yeah. Hell yeah. Let's go. That was isn' in my chubby days and everybody stuck around. Matt Spencer, did you have some nice moves? Is that what it was? Everybody stuck around? around you Oh, man. Yeah.
01:36:43
Speaker
It didn't matter how bad I played. It was all about the visuals at that point.
01:36:50
Speaker
Oh, man. I'm getting June bugged. Oh, I see it. Wait, huh? Yeah. Um, So Saturday night, we call it the open door challenge when we dropped the link. And it all started from the first guy who we just let up.
01:37:04
Speaker
And I'm pretty sure that cat was a serial killer. ah Yes, 100% the boobs, the moves, the man boobs.
01:37:17
Speaker
Movies. Who doesn't love a good set of movies? I'm looking for that picture right now. oh yeah, there is a there is evidence. forget about that.
01:37:29
Speaker
Never mind. um Where is it? Oh, here's mine. ah Oh, I did some Photoshop on this one. Where is it? There we go.
01:37:42
Speaker
Is it too wide it out? It's still bit too bright. You might have to rotate your screen or turn your brightness down on your screen. Can you rotate it? You got to kind of wiggle it. Hey, wait.
01:37:54
Speaker
ah there we ah ah and i share I think you can share it on the screen. There it is. My mom's watching right now, by the way. so she this Be proud, mom.
01:38:09
Speaker
That's your baby but boy.
01:38:13
Speaker
but but but She understands. She knows. my son's shes name My son's a rock star. He does things. look at I mean, how long how long has Flea played the bass in his underwear for the Red Hot
Touring and Healthy Habits
01:38:24
Speaker
I'm just saying. It's kind of his thing. the king of just dumb faces. oh and Still.
01:38:35
Speaker
Here we go. and And doing wild stuff. Oh, is that Paul? Hold on.
01:38:41
Speaker
Oh, nope, that's me. don yeah that That was a fun one. I don't know if you can see very well, but I'm holding a Red Bull and some vodka, I think, and we're about to do a charity event.
01:38:59
Speaker
that two parts there? I didn't realize I had more pick-and-gents. Look at that. That's some nice moves. That's some nice moves you got there, Spence. You got to get chubby again, man. That's what the ladies want.
01:39:11
Speaker
Or the guys. It's 2025. We're not here to judge. I know it's Lucy Daddy's summer. I've gotten far more comments from the men than I have the ladies. so Let's start there.
01:39:26
Speaker
Yeah, I feel you on that one. I get a lot of dudes that find me attractive and I'm like, you know, I'm straight. And they're like, yeah, we're not. And I'm like, Fair enough. like They're like, that that's your problem, bro.
01:39:40
Speaker
Valid argument. Valid argument at the end of the day. I can't argue that. don't You don't know until you test the waters, I suppose. This isn't this isn't this isn't new food, man. You just don't test a wiener one time. There's no coming back from that.
01:39:55
Speaker
but There's no coming back from that, buddy. I'm just saying. I'm more of a Taco Bell than a Frank's.
01:40:08
Speaker
Yeah, you don't go to Chicago and try the the the pizza pie and go, you know, I don't like it. And everything's fine. You know. Shout out to Pizza Mike.
01:40:20
Speaker
Yeah, Pizza Mike, Chicago. Our buddy Pizza Mike in Chicago who lets us come and cook pizzas and feeds us with like 20 pounds of Lou Malnati's pizza.
01:40:33
Speaker
That's another reason we love Chicago. You can't go wrong with a good Chicago. You cannot go wrong with a good Chicago pie. Fuck you, New York. Your pizza's ass. Just so you know. It's cardboard with grease and cheese on it.
01:40:49
Speaker
We have some Royce down here now that's I love. Detroit's got a good... Sorry, June bug in my ear. going on Detroit's got some good pizza too, man.
01:41:05
Speaker
So, okay well that okay. So this brings up ah when you guys are on the road because I've asked this question and I think some people lie to me because I and know they lie to me. When you guys are on the road, what is your guys' eating habit? What is your guys' go-to road but is your guys go to road meal we we consider salads consider is a strong word judging by your shirt you don't look like a salad guy that's actually an inside joke 100% there's two different versions of this story yeah two different versions I remember exactly anyway I remember exactly
01:41:53
Speaker
Our eating habits have changed. At first, it was just complete anarchy. It was Taco Bell, whatever. hell It didn't matter. thats what i'm sorry It still is from time to time. Spencer loves his gas station pizza, man. But as a whole, our eating habits have gotten more considerate of trying to live another year.
01:42:24
Speaker
It's not like complete health food, but it has settled down from like getting the appetizer platter at every meal or three cheeseburgers or whatever. It's it's just not as bad unless we're playing an event with catering and then we'll eat the shit out of whatever they have and then, oh, your belt's down.
01:42:48
Speaker
Belt down. That's Texas' zone, man. that's texas his own man hello Oh, nice. The rattlesnake. Sweet.
01:42:59
Speaker
And then Spencer will take home whatever's left from catering.
01:43:05
Speaker
That's happened multiple times.
01:43:09
Speaker
You got to pack up for on the road, man. got to get those road snacks. Well, they're just going to throw it away. getting older. We're trying to pay attention a little more to what we eat.
01:43:20
Speaker
um I'm part of the road. Here's a shenanigan. Yeah. yeah Here's a shenanigan. we We got your ties into everything here. We went to Lou Malnati's from Pizza Mark.
01:43:35
Speaker
And my mom doesn't get to Chicago very often, so we don't get to a lot of Chicago-style pizza over in Iowa. I can see you laughing already.
01:43:47
Speaker
So I was like, mom, we got pizza for you. We got like Chicago style pizza. She's like, yeah, that's awesome. So in a sweaty van full of men, we carried this like this high, like huge waterlogged dried up.
01:44:05
Speaker
ah waterlaw drying up ah Chicago style pizza. I brought it all the way to her and was like, we got you pizza. And I opened, we opened it up and we looked and it's like, that's not good anymore. The whole time we're telling him, why are we letting this pizza take up a million miles in the van?
Tour Mishaps and Humor
01:44:26
Speaker
He's like, because I'm giving it to my mom. but We're like, it's not going to be good. It's not refrigerated in here. Chicago. To Wisconsin, Minnesota, to Iowa. it was ah oh It was so good, though.
01:44:44
Speaker
but Spencer doesn't love his mom. that's what we that's That's what we just learned. Spencer doesn't love his mom. I love my mom too much. that i' i'm like I'm like a golden retriever. I'll bring you a little pigeon even though you don't necessarily want it. But it's just there because i you know that I love you.
01:45:02
Speaker
That's what my mom's like. I love you. you want this? No. yeah now This is for you. she does she pat you on the head and tell you you were a good boy? and Yes. i can see that. Nice.
01:45:17
Speaker
i Hey, man. I understand. Lori Spencer's mom is good to us. We love Lori. She put us up when we were we had been sleeping in crappy hotels. and That my that ah tour is about 3,100 miles. and so You don't stay in the best hotels all the time. yeah We got Okoboji, Iowa.
01:45:39
Speaker
Spencer's hometown. She put us up in a nice condo. So we we all got to sleep in a ah bed alone for like a night. It was very nice.
01:45:54
Speaker
And she had bought all kinds of food. She had made soup, I think. um Yeah, she she hooked it up. We love her mom that mom. mom, when we go through Memphis, my mom comes to the show.
01:46:09
Speaker
And then Spencer's mom in Iowa. Then we saw Joey's mom in Kansas City. It was a lot of moms. I didn't realize that. We saw three of our moms on tour, last tour.
01:46:20
Speaker
So that was cool. Yeah, man. The moms are always going to come through, man. They're going to take care of you. Make sure you guys are good and and everybody's all comfy and fed. You go sleep in a comfy bed and you go to bed with a full belly. That's what's up, man. That's awesome. 100%. You'll be mad at that at all.
01:46:41
Speaker
ah I was going ask you guys something. I totally forgot because we went way over here.
01:46:49
Speaker
Do you like Forrest Gump?
01:46:55
Speaker
Squirrel! We're a bunch of gump heads in the band. I'm a big dumb animal. so you know ah we we yeah I'm just a big dumb animal. We love Forrest Gump a lot.
01:47:07
Speaker
yeah and We'll try to work it into the show if we can. Nice. Forrest Gump. Forrest Gump quotes go with every every circumstance. every situation Spencer has a pretty good Forrest Gump impression. okay for okay sport Words are hard.
01:47:24
Speaker
All right, Spencer. Now you're on the spot. Sometimes, Jen A. but lives a box of chocolate Sometimes you end up on Glick Show.
01:47:43
Speaker
You sound like sleepy for us right now. I'm a little sleepy. I've had a few drinks. A little drunk gum. A little drunky gum. One of the best like moments on the last tour was... up, please. it was It was completely scripted.
01:48:07
Speaker
It felt like it could have been scripted. I'm talking the crowd in Memphis... which a lot of the people there were family. And I tend to not talk as smoothly around my family. I just, I'm trying hard to be funny.
01:48:23
Speaker
And so I'm talking about, you know, the goings on of the tour and joking about Forrest Gump, talking about how we've been watching a lot of Forrest Gump in the van and in the hotels And I start to tell a joke or try to be funny with something. And it just, I lose what I'm saying.
01:48:40
Speaker
And it's awkwardly silent for like three seconds, four seconds, five seconds. And again, now I'm looking down and my mom and my sister. And I'm like completely, now I'm not even thinking about the joke anymore. I'm just thinking, what's happening? I feel like I'm 80 years old again.
01:48:56
Speaker
And then right on cue, getting stuck.
Forrest Gump and Storytelling
01:49:00
Speaker
talking about Forrest Gump, Spencer perfectly goes, and that's all I got to say about that.
01:49:07
Speaker
whole time yeah I'm laughing my ass off for like two songs. I can't hardly sing anymore. It was well written, but it was i perfect.
01:49:19
Speaker
Funny as shit. we we we have a We have a saying here on the network that I coined all the way back at the very beginning when we first started doing shows and it's a hashtag words are hard.
01:49:32
Speaker
And sometimes you just did just, but yeah you know, and it however, but we need to yeah incorporate that, uh, forest gum flying into the, words are hard. Exactly. Oh yeah.
01:49:49
Speaker
Especially when the, the, the joke doesn't stick. It's just, uh, yeah. So why did the chick cross the road? Uh, to get to the other side. up yeah and I've been there more times than I can. That's all I'm about to say about that.
01:50:10
Speaker
but Yeah, we all we all have those moments where you you try to land a joke and it just doesn't happen to me very often because I mean, I'm that damn good. Other people it happens to.
01:50:23
Speaker
One thing that does happen, I'll forget the words to songs. And Spencer sometimes comes through, but most times he's like, I don't know. but I don't know. then i went Then I turn around and go to the drummers.
01:50:36
Speaker
I go to Paul. I'm like, how's this verse start? I can't think. I'm just spacing. And he never knows that because he's a drummer. but He's like, I'm just a drummer. What do you want from me?
01:50:47
Speaker
but One time we were laughing through heart and we couldn't get it together. we We stopped the show and just called it early. Nice. Cedar Park, and I mixed up the words to so the two of the cities, and I made ah up a word that was something, half something and half Memphis, and I said something piss, and it was auspice or downpice, I don't know, was something, but it it we lost our shit.
01:51:20
Speaker
we We just stopped. We tried to play three songs. It was just a duo show, and You can tell by the patrons, we're sick of watching us laugh, so we just turned the PA off and stopped.
01:51:34
Speaker
We turned on the Bluetooth. It was better entertainment. Fuck it. Here's here's here's here's here Spencer's mixtape. We're going to come in the crowd and get drunk with you guys.
01:51:44
Speaker
Fuck it. So here's
01:51:53
Speaker
for you. And here is the Wiggles. yeah but Blood on up, you know, on a side note, we're going to come get drunk with you guys because Memphis fucked everything up.
01:52:08
Speaker
I will do that. I will do that. i've been known to I've been known to gracefully bow out on a Saturday night show where it's just like,
01:52:20
Speaker
Nobody's paying attention to me. I've been quiet for five minutes. Hit this button and nobody will notice I'm gone. And then my phone blows up within 30 seconds. What are you at? What are you doing? Where are you at? What's happening?
01:52:33
Speaker
Old Irish goodbye. Yeah, just... yeah See you guys next week. I'm out.
01:52:44
Speaker
I used to never do that. And as I realized how... much i don't like being around a lot of people anymore i've embraced the irish goodbye and a i'm not a i'm not a hater on it anymore um i will just sneak out whatever exit i can get out to leave a situation now i just i don't know man i can't stand people i mean i love people but at the same time yeah
01:53:17
Speaker
Hey, by bang give them the old shooter. and Shooter McGowan. Yeah. I love people. Don't get me wrong, but I also hate people at the same
Social Situations and Goodbyes
01:53:28
Speaker
time. So I've, I've, I've been known from time to time to get the old, nobody's looking. Let's see if I can, there's the exit.
01:53:35
Speaker
Let's see if I can sneak out the door. I'll come back and myself in the morning. it's It's always the, like, ah you never mind sticking around good company, but, like, the same awkward silence comes in. It's like, how do I slip out of this?
01:53:53
Speaker
You guys want to a shot? Or, like, yeah, somebody, I heard somebody, a dog was barking. going to go investigate. You guys go over the shots. I got to go take a pistol quick. And then you just right out the door. Yeah.
01:54:08
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Sometimes if people know you a little more than you know them, that can get will start grinding on you a little bit, especially if it's like multiple people all at once, then it's just a little too much for me.
01:54:25
Speaker
I know that's an ADHD thing that at times you love it and you thrive in it, and then when that's gone, though, and that fuse is burned, you have to get out and get away and No one talked to me. i I definitely have that part of it.
01:54:42
Speaker
Yeah, I think that's i think it's i think that's where I thrive in big crowds is because of the ADHD. And I can talk to anybody. You know what i mean? Like, you're boring me.
01:54:53
Speaker
Oh, shiny object over here. you know but you like You know? And then then I bounce over there, and then I get bored. then i But yeah, like you said, once that what you burn that fuse, man, it's like, okay, how do I...
01:55:05
Speaker
How do I get out of here without walking past the 20 people I just made friends with? you that yeah yeah did give them that Why did I give them my Snapchat? Why do they have my phone number? I don't even know these people. Is that my social security number on your screen? yeah What is that?
01:55:24
Speaker
The next morning, i get a text message from a number I don't recognize. Hey, homie, thanks for all the money.
01:55:35
Speaker
yeah Yeah. Who are you and why do you have my number? I just want to say I had a fun time last night. What did I do last night? well he What the hell happened?
01:55:52
Speaker
This is why I drink in the comfort of my own home, because the only person I'm going to end up talking to at the end of the night is myself. And he's an all right guy. He's an all right guy. At the end of the day, he's not too bad.
01:56:08
Speaker
No. So one of the things I wanted to ask you guys is what what is coming up? We got the new record coming out. You got new singles coming out. um I won't say too much about them.
01:56:20
Speaker
I will say I got to hear a couple new songs, amazing songs. Love both of them. The young lady on one of them. Wow. What an amazing voice on her. What an absolutely amazing voice on her.
01:56:35
Speaker
We were excited when not only did she agree to sing her part that was written, she wrote her second verse and sang harmonies on the entire song and added some little extra flair in there and not just sticking to the script. And we are very happy with how that turned out and are excited to see what that can do on the radio.
01:57:05
Speaker
So that'll be cool and exciting and nerve wracking all at the same time. Yeah, no, exactly. when when when When I first started listening the song, that was one of the first things that caught my ear was her voice. And i was like, who is that?
01:57:22
Speaker
And please tell me she's not just in the background. She had the whole verse and stuff. Yeah. Excuse me. Great song. An absolutely great song. Love the song. Both of you guys killed it.
01:57:34
Speaker
um And then the other one that I heard too, i like fantastic songs. Definitely, yeah I enjoyed them. I think I listened to them a few times in a row, to be honest with you. I was over here playing Call of Duty and I muted my soundbar and I just put my phone up on my shoulder so I could listen to them. And i was like, oh shit, I got got a message myff up back. Hold on a second. Yeah, that other one was Malcolm running that song Spencer wrote.
01:58:03
Speaker
Yeah. all Good job, Spence. Nice. I like that one I like them both. Thank you. Yeah, I wrote that. ah That song was a premonition. Not that she asked anything, but that was about me and my girl. Well, now I'm curious.
01:58:15
Speaker
A premonition. Yeah. Yeah, it was a premonition.
Songs Reflecting Relationships
01:58:21
Speaker
i was I wrote it a month before I met her, and and then once I met her, i was like,
01:58:28
Speaker
long story is short, I was like, this song was like written about you, and I didn't even know who you were yet, but you walked in, and then I put the picture to the frame. It it was just there. Yeah.
01:58:42
Speaker
Sounds like you were just trying to get laid. No. it It really did work out that way. It really did. It did.
01:58:53
Speaker
No, that's yeah that's awesome. She's been both rock and more Those are the more Mainstream songs on there. There's a whole, and don't even know what you say, a spectrum of songs from ballad. There's a ballad on there that's pretty hitching the feels.
01:59:12
Speaker
And then there's that rager that ah that we talked about earlier that's just balls to the wall. Essentially, it's a three-minute drum solo with guitar shredding over the whole time. So it's all over the place, which I think we're proud of that.
Anticipating the New Album
01:59:30
Speaker
and The new album is like a cocaine high. It's a roller coaster ride. That is our cocaine song. That's our second record in a row that's going to end on a cocaine rock song. yeah You get that bump. Not that I've ever done cocaine. and I never have done cocaine. I've never even done drugs in my life.
01:59:48
Speaker
But I've heard stories. you know you You kind of start out a little... You do that bump and then all of a sudden you're just like, Let's go. previous song is called Angels in Monterey.
02:00:06
Speaker
If you off the last record, that's that's another song about cocaine and women. And that's the ender on the Wimberley record, our previous one.
02:00:18
Speaker
that So we're making, i guess, a tradition of that. Ain't nothing wrong with that, man. There ain't nothing wrong with that. You you you know, you you you end an album and you you you have, you know, 10 songs that are that great.
02:00:33
Speaker
and And I can't remember all the names, all the songs off top my head because I just, I was, the other day I was like, I'd listened to a few songs and I was like, let me jump into their catalog.
02:00:45
Speaker
And I just, I was at the gym and I just, Memphis Key songs, let me just play them. um But the yeah like I said, that Sam and Kate song really, really hit home. I don't know why it struck it. not It didn't strike a nerve in a bad way. It was just such an amazing song. such a
02:01:06
Speaker
Such a cool story. And it was just like, wow, here we go. Keep it on repeat. i'm hot you know and And like I said, I probably listened to it a good four or five times in a row because it was just every time you listen,
02:01:20
Speaker
you catch something else. yeah You know, you, you hear something like, Ooh, Oh, wait a minute. And the story starts to come to the first, like with any song, your first listen, you're like, Oh yeah, I like this.
02:01:32
Speaker
But the more you listen to it, the more, the more it comes together and the puzzle pieces start to where i start to click. And it was just like, wow, what an amazing fucking story. What an amazing song.
02:01:43
Speaker
And it it kind of took me back in time a little bit. Um, as I said, you guys have that, that old school vibe that, uh, old school country vibe. I guess that comes from being out in Texas. I don't know. Yeah.
02:01:58
Speaker
So Spence said he's, he's originally from Iowa. Yeah. You're originally from, from Memphis. How did you guys end up in Texas? Uh, South, I came for south by Southwest and Oh two.
South by Southwest Impact
02:02:13
Speaker
Um, and never been to Texas before and came down with, um, my band and another band and they were kind of on the brink of making it back then. They had an offer from Volcom records. And so they played some pretty, some pretty good showcases down here back when South by was really about the music and you could get a wristband and go see all the bands.
02:02:40
Speaker
Oh yeah. So we had the best time ah up to that point. That was the best weekend of my life. Um, it changed everything for me. all that Every single note, every single word of that song is completely true in things that happened. We were breaking shot glasses against the wall in a bar.
02:03:02
Speaker
and This wasn't us being dicks. This was with the owner of the bar. yeah You were just going with the ambiance, so to say. We were singing in the streets, literally set up shows, busking for the fun of it, not even for money, and just really just playing.
02:03:18
Speaker
um Yeah. like We met people that changed our lives. Like it just really, you know, i fell in love with Austin and being in Texas. And so that once I tell people this, I never left after that.
02:03:33
Speaker
I went back home for another year and a half until I could save up some money and come up with a plan and all that. But I never really left Austin after that. So I was there in 04 and been there ever since.
02:03:46
Speaker
And then Spencer came down, and don't know how many years ago now, um I won't tell that story, but how we met though was Joey and bass player and Spencer were roommates and I had met Joey at a gig and he wasn't real happy with what was going on with his. And I was looking to build a band. And so Joey had been playing for just a little bit, not a whole lot of shows.
02:04:12
Speaker
And then Spencer came with Joey to one of our shows, uh, South of Austin. And, uh, we met Gary Clark jr. He was at the show hanging out. He bought us tequila and that was an amazing night too.
02:04:25
Speaker
So then Spencer came to an open mic. I was hosting with Joey and then we jammed on stage and I was like, Hey, Joey, uh, ask your buddy if he wants to like do this every weekend like from now on forever. And, uh,
02:04:45
Speaker
He's like, i won't answer for him. Joey's very pragmatic. I won't speak for him. But I will say, he's probably very interested.
02:04:57
Speaker
and And so that was that.
02:05:01
Speaker
But yeah, Spencer came from Okoboji, Iowa, which I thought was a make-believe place until last year. It does sound like something out of the you know the realm of The but Hobbit.
02:05:15
Speaker
middle earth middle earth yeah it's a lot like that it's a lot like that but with more lakes yeah but what when we went it was very not green and lush but usually it is in the summertime we went uh about a year ago no yeah or march yeah a little bit more than a year ago now it was like more of a cold pretty cold and everything was dead and Yeah. Yellow. Welcome to the Midwest.
02:05:46
Speaker
Welcome to the Midwest in the
Charleston's Allure
02:05:48
Speaker
wintertime. You know. i mean, you know yeah. i Trust me. Unfortunately, I know all too well. ask me this week hey yeah As we have learned, you know, Spencer is Hobbit-sized.
02:06:04
Speaker
No, I, I, yeah, Memphis, I, I, I understand what you're saying about, you know, going to Texas like that. And and that was the same way, you know, I'm born and raised in Ohio, but for, for whatever reason, like Charleston, South Carolina holds my heart. man And like, I went down there my junior year in high school for spring break and fell in love with it, went down my senior year.
02:06:28
Speaker
Fell even more in love with it. And and it was like, when I graduate, I'm moving down and I was going to move down. And I was in the process of packing. And I got a phone call that changed the trajectory of my life. And then my ex-wife and I, we moved down and we were down there for about 10 years until till we split up. And she decided she was coming back home with the kids. And I was like, I guess I'm going back to fucking Ohio because I don't want to be 12 hours away from my kids and be that dad who summers and holidays only.
02:06:58
Speaker
But it's still, man, it's still calling my name. i can't wait until my son. Well, if my son had his way, because he was born down there, if my son had his way, we'd be in Charleston right now. Okay. i got I got to wait until he graduates. He's like i he's an a native.
02:07:15
Speaker
Yeah, he he's a Charlestonian. Yeah, he's an anchor her baby is what they call him. He's a Charlestonian by birth. But he was like, Dad, when I graduate, I'm going with you. I'm like, cool, bro.
02:07:28
Speaker
Like, you can be my wingman at the end of the day. Green City, West Virginia. No, Charleston, South Carolina. That's pretty country, though. Charleston, it's a beautiful town.
02:07:38
Speaker
It's a beautiful city. Got that southern charm. It's sad. ah charleston yeah it's it's a beautiful it's a beautiful town it's a beautiful city but that southern charm it's it's I don't know, man. it's It's just something about it, man. it did It's got stranglehold on my heart. That's home for me.
02:07:56
Speaker
And I don't know why, because I'm born and raised in Ohio. But when I'm down there, man, it's like, this is this is where I'm supposed to be. This is my jam.
Southern vs. Northern Lifestyle
02:08:03
Speaker
is That's exactly what happened to me when I when i came to Austin, too. There's something about that northern boy who goes down south and finds the tranquility and God's country. I don't know what it is, but the second you get to sit in it, you're like, this is where I was supposed to be.
02:08:20
Speaker
That's the statement that you always say to yourself. Yeah, that's where i'm supposed to be. I drank the water. I'll find me a sweet Southern Belle, settle down. I'm not going to have no more babies. I'm done having babies. Find me a sweet Southern Belle, settle down. Give me a place on the beach. Give me a place, you know, so I don't.
02:08:40
Speaker
For sure. just yeah Give me away from that goddamn snow. give me Yeah, give me away from that cold in snow and in the north. like Everything up here is so like, go, go, go, go. go go go go go like Everybody's in a hurry for no fucking reason.
02:08:57
Speaker
And down south, it's just like, they're like a bunch of nonchalant elephants, man. They're just living life. And loving life, man. It's just like, yeah, we'll get there when we get there.
02:09:07
Speaker
You know, work's not going anywhere. We're still going to be there. We'll get it done when we get it done. And I love that. That's what I love about the South, man. Everywhere I've been down South, man, it's just that mentality. It's just, we're good. but Why are you so agitated?
02:09:24
Speaker
Because love what I like. I live in the North. What do you mean? Agitation is just normal. I love that agitated. Have you ever seen that Venn diagram, or not Venn diagram, that diagram of the United States that separates? you I think you'll understand this since you're from Ohio.
02:09:42
Speaker
likeo It'll divide the country into four different parts. So you got the South is nice. but They act nice, and they are nice.
02:09:55
Speaker
And then you got the North. They're not nice. but They don't act nice, but they are nice. yeah And then you've got the West Coast, which is they act nice, but they're not nice.
02:10:07
Speaker
And then you got the East Coast. It's like they're not nice and they don't act nice. What a bunch of fucking scumbags on the east Northeast Coast. yeah and There's something refreshing about like seeing the Southern hospital hospitality that's like... ah It's nice to see when people act nice and then they are nice. Yeah, they are nice.
02:10:32
Speaker
Somebody who's not acting nice, but they are nice. you know It's very surface. i don't I don't care how old I get. I don't care how and don't care how long I've been there.
02:10:45
Speaker
And I don't give a damn how old this person is but says that says it to you well as long as they're of age. i will I am an absolute sucker. for a woman that's Southern and just naturally just calling me baby for no damn reason.
02:11:00
Speaker
Look at that. Yeah. You go to a restaurant and you order your meal. Don't worry, baby. I'll get that for you. Wait, what? You know, all sorts of ways right now or honey. So yeah, I'm like,
02:11:12
Speaker
the we are have you my and yeah so yeah have like you got You got me falling in love with you right now, just so you know. Have you been to Louisiana yet? That's a different kind of Southern accent, too. not yet, but New Orleans is on that. I can't even recreate it.
02:11:32
Speaker
Yeah, I've got some bucket list areas I want to be i want to go. Nashville is one of them. There's a couple spots out in Texas I want to go to, but New Orleans is one of those places I just – I want to go, man. And and I'm afraid that it when I go there, I'm not going to ever want to leave. Yeah, actually, i I did not think it was going to be as awesome as it was, but it was pretty awesome.
02:11:56
Speaker
I can't believe you haven't been to Nashville yet. should probably go to Nashville. And you should come to Texas. I have never been to Nashville. However... I'm going to try to, I'm going to try to swing it this summer.
02:12:11
Speaker
A lot of the artists that I've interviewed on, on this show are like, dude, you come to Nashville, hit us up. And I'm like, yeah, okay. It's like running into an old friend and you're like, we got to totally hang out, you know, you never hang out.
Nashville Invitations
02:12:23
Speaker
And they're like, no, seriously. And I brought it up one time about potentially trying to get down there this summer. And I had like four or five of them hit me up and I'm like, I said it on the show, where did you guys hear me say that? And they're like, oh, we were listening.
02:12:37
Speaker
Let us know if you come down. Like, we're going to show you around and we're going to make sure you have a good time. And I'm like, ah all right. But yeah, know texas is ah Texas is on my list. Obviously, Austin's on my list for a lot of reasons.
02:12:52
Speaker
um But, you know, it's that's kind of the nice thing about being single and my kids getting older and stuff like that is if I just decide to, I've always been a wanderer.
02:13:03
Speaker
like Even when I was younger, I'd just wander you know for no reason. Now that my kids are getting older and I'm single, it's like, I want to wander. I'm going to wander off for a week. you know and If the opportunity is there, fuck it.
02:13:16
Speaker
I'll see you guys Monday, and I'll be back in a week. Not all who wander are lost. Some people like to
02:13:26
Speaker
wander. I was opposite. I didn't get to travel a lot when i was younger, and now I'm making up for it. Yeah, well, I wouldn i ah would love to take this.
02:13:39
Speaker
So one of the things I want to do with this with this show in particular is go see live bands and do like pre-show interviews and and then like record the show and then do a post-show interview.
02:13:52
Speaker
And if that requires me to travel, oh, man. That's a good idea. right now Especially if I was getting paid to do it. um Let's let's go man. Kids, I'll see you when it's time for me to pick you up next week. That's on the road. you like I've never seen that. like You almost like debrief. You can debrief the show. like Highlights. hey that crazy bitch. What happened with that? like Post-game interview type thing. That's a good idea.
02:14:22
Speaker
Spencer, how do you feel after that giant Amazon woman just shoved you out of the way? ah Make sure you get before and after pictures. It's going to make more sense.
02:14:36
Speaker
Nah, yeah, that's that that's that's got it. So for you guys, now that we're talking about traveling and stuff like that, What's that like for you guys to get to go to places you may either, either places you've never been to before, or are there places that you look forward to going back to?
02:14:54
Speaker
guess it's a two-party question.
Chicago's Musical Community
02:14:56
Speaker
ah i i I think we all look forward to going Chicago now. It's like a, it's like our Northern base.
02:15:04
Speaker
um yeah We, we played the summer solstice festival in Yorkville, which is right outside Chicago ah two years in a row. And, the first year there was this like fledgling social media group called, uh, red dirt area, red dirt, Chicago area.
02:15:23
Speaker
And now it's grown and they've got a show as well. Um, that we've, uh, done the interview on and they are so good to us. They wear our shirts. And so when they go to like mile zero fast they go to,
02:15:39
Speaker
just shows around Chicago, they they're always, you know, not only us, they support a lot of bands, but they do wear our stuff. And we played Chicago, like actual Chicago, Carol's Pub for the first time.
02:15:51
Speaker
And there was 115 people backed into Carol's Pub our first time. And a big reason is because they've grown that group and shared our music with other people in the area. And so now it's like we've gotten a little, little foothold in the,
02:16:07
Speaker
the Midwest, you know, up there. So I look forward to going there. Big picture, I would love to go to UK. I've never been to the West Coast, so I don't care as much about California as much, but I would love to go to like Oregon, Washington and Oregon.
02:16:26
Speaker
Yeah, man, the PNW, man, they, yeah Blaze actually lived out in that part of the, out in that part of the country for a long time. He was, ah he's an Air Force vet.
02:16:37
Speaker
And he lived out there for a while, he loved it out there, man. He talks about how beautiful it is. i've had ah I've had an artist from from out in that part, and and she's just like, it's so beautiful out here, man.
02:16:48
Speaker
Yeah. and People are weird, but, yeah you know. Yeah. What about you, Spencer? Where do you want to go?
02:17:00
Speaker
I mean, the gas station with the breakfast pizzas. don't don't don't don't Don't knock the gas station pizzas in the Midwest, first and foremost.
02:17:11
Speaker
I'm at it. I had that scrambled egg shit. When you're drunk or you're hungover, that is a quick fix. He's she's never going to get it.
02:17:23
Speaker
This Texas wind is blowing all our fears over. he don't understand. He's not from the Midwest. Stacy's Pizza will solve all of your problems. yes
02:17:36
Speaker
I'm a pizza. i can't do I can't do frozen pizzas. I can't do... I don't know. um mean it's It's the dough, really. that The sauce is fine. The cheese is fine. The dough.
02:17:47
Speaker
I can't do... are jimmyy there are some There are some misses, but they're all at least midline. But there are some yeah that hit it so good. Boom. Right on the money.
02:18:00
Speaker
Well, you guys ever get to Central Ohio... You've got to find the right gas station. Yeah, if you guys ever get to my neck of the woods, I will i will change your lives, and I will introduce you to and a restaurant ah that is an Ohio landmark, a staple for Central Ohio, and that's t js it's Everything they make is homemade. Everything they make is scratch. and andre Unfortunately, thanks to fucking COVID, they're no longer 24-7 because that was our go-to restaurant.
02:18:31
Speaker
three o'clock in the morning after leaving the bar. ah But nonetheless, the recipes have stayed the same. And you can get a nice Sunday morning hangover meal. And they have a meal there. It's called a barnyard buster.
02:18:44
Speaker
And it's sausage, gravy, biscuits, bacon, eggs, hash browns. And it's it's not on a plate, boys. It's on a platter. this This will feed three men. But when you're drunk at three o'clock in the morning...
02:19:00
Speaker
Or if you're hungover as hell on a Sunday morning. might my favorite thing My favorite thing about traveling is when we go to the Midwest and like it brings back old memories about like how ridiculous we
Midwest Food Nostalgia
02:19:14
Speaker
we treat food there and like restaurants.
02:19:20
Speaker
Small story here. I'll keep a short. Sweet. Yeah. ah One of my favorite stories that I ever share with my family is like, we'll go out to like bumfuck nowhere in norra North Dakota, South Dakota, just along the Missouri River.
02:19:35
Speaker
And when like you catch all the fish you want and then you bring it back in And then the only town the only restaurant you can eat in the town is going to be called the Busted Nut.
02:19:46
Speaker
And they serve the best food you will eat for 100 miles.
02:19:54
Speaker
It's so good. That's my favorite thing about the Midwest. It's always the greasiest, most delicious food and served for 10 people on one plate. Yeah. yeah and It was after your food.
02:20:08
Speaker
We had the breakfast at that place with the skillets. Oh, yeah. You got to do it and you didn't even know what you were in for. ah one Not one person finished their food.
02:20:21
Speaker
I don't think I ate half of my skillet. We would go to TJ's after leaving the bar and there'd be like 12 of us at the table and every one of us would order a Barnyard Buster and man, we'd all eat that sumbitch.
02:20:40
Speaker
plate was clean. Game over. And we'd walk into TJ's with sugar and a fucking skunk. And we would leave TJ's sober as a preacher on Sunday morning, man.
02:20:53
Speaker
It just soaked it all It's so good. so No single man has any business eating that much food, but damn it. if it's and And like I said, everything is made from scratch, even their biscuits.
02:21:06
Speaker
They make from scratch. The best part is the creative nature of it all, too. like They'll call it like the busted nut rich dicks. Yeah.
02:21:19
Speaker
um ah barter However, the downside of the barnyard buster is the next day when you wake up. does It kicks your ass. Trust me oh it's yeah yeah it's like four It's like four eggs, four biscuits, you know like six pieces of bacon, some sausage, and then they just smother it in biscuits and gravy.
02:21:41
Speaker
and It's just like and then it's just brought out on a platter and you're just like, get on, bitches. And it's good 100% of the time. Yes. Yeah. absolutely every Every damn time you have it. It's it's amazing.
02:21:55
Speaker
You never miss it. I hate to break up the party, but I'm probably going to have to go here in just a minute. No, I just have to look up at the time. Gentlemen, I do want to say. Go ahead, Spence.
02:22:10
Speaker
What were you going to say? no i I was literally about to to say, Glick, how long the show go on for? yeah the show ah The show is typically two hours. However, I'm the boss on the network, so the show goes as long as the show goes.
02:22:24
Speaker
There you go. But no, I do want to say real quick. This would be the first time we got on a two-hour program for reality. Yeah.
02:22:34
Speaker
shout out to the southern outlaws those guys came on uh my show they their they're they're they're a band here in ohio they do southern rock and i was like shows only two hour two hours guys and originally the show was on friday night and then i realized i'm a fucking moron and i can't interview musicians on a friday night because Friday nights are kind of a big deal for musicians, you know?
02:22:58
Speaker
Yeah. But they came on and I was like, show's just two hours, guys. You know, gave them the same spiel I gave you. We just hang and shoot the shit. Six hours later, all of us drunk as hell. I'm like, yo, we should probably end the show.
02:23:15
Speaker
That's my six hours. is ah That's a lot. That's a Titanic twice. ah That's a full shift. Yeah, we we we were having a ball. We were on a blast.
Drinking-focused Show
02:23:26
Speaker
but We've got friends here with a show called Drinking Texas that we're we're like Chevy Chase or but Steve Martin on Saturday Night Live like or Alec Baldwin. We're there like every three months.
02:23:38
Speaker
um yeah And that show, that it starts with a drink of ah tequila every show. Then there's going to two to three top shelf whiskeys usually that we taste. And in between all the tastings,
02:23:52
Speaker
we're drinking beer and eating hot cheeses. And, uh, those shows get, I won't even go back and listen to them.
02:24:02
Speaker
Stupid and sloppy. Uh, and I'm just like, Jesus Christ. Like sounds like, our sounds like our, Saturday night shows here here on the network. Drinking Texas, if you got your ears on or if you guys want to do it, let's hook up and do it let's do a show together on a Saturday night.

02:29:06
Speaker
Guns loaded, bitches, and they're from Texas. I'm from Ohio, and we like our fucking guns. but and ah Speaking of guns, we were talking about it earlier.
02:29:18
Speaker
None was close. I think they're all inside. Yeah, I know. I looked at mine when I was saying i was like, I can reach it. um We've been talking about it. We talked about it earlier. This is a great song, a great fucking story.
02:29:31
Speaker
It is a long song, so but it is absolutely 100% worth it. ah When did the this is a did this one come out? This one came out a little while ago. Sam and Kate.
02:29:44
Speaker
That came out in, I don't remember the release date, I think 2020. Okay. we got it. But I wrote it probably in 18, 17. It wasn't in the set list for a while, and we brought it back and really leaned into how it climbs.
02:30:08
Speaker
um Yeah. It builds kind of as the story builds and the seriousness of what the lyrics are. and just keeps building and then now the music builds with it. And it's a full you know crescendo by the, you get to the last chorus and verse. And so it's it's a welcome addition back into the set. And it is strange, like that that was a song that was produced Not the best by who the the studio i was at at the time.
02:30:39
Speaker
And there was some choices on the song that I was still not happy with. But through all of that, the heart of the song, the basis of the song, it's still organically is in our top 10 of streams, even though it's older.
02:30:54
Speaker
It wasn't done at a great studio. Didn't have a really great producer. Didn't have these guys playing on it. I had hired people and it's still, it keeps getting streamed. So, I am proud of it for that reason. Sounds like you need to re-record it with these guys.
02:31:09
Speaker
When you brought it up earlier, I was thinking that. yeah so yeah to which it could you It has been discussed. reissue Even though I got scolded by Memphis, I do do my homework because this is a five-year-old song and I went way back.
02:31:24
Speaker
I do do. Deep cuts. Deep cuts. I go all the way back and listen to everything. so Here's a little salmon cake ah Guys, do yourselves a favor, man. In all seriousness, um check these guys out, man.
02:31:40
Speaker
Not only do they make great music, but you've seen here tonight that they're they're awesome people, man. Look forward to hopefully one day sharing a Shiner or Dole with you guys.
02:31:52
Speaker
Yeah. maybe yeah Maybe a TJ's. Yeah, man. We can drink in the parking lot and then go and then go eat afterwards. but to Waffle House, preferably.
02:32:05
Speaker
man i'll throw Yeah, I love a good Jack and Coke. He's going to want a Jack and Coke. I'm going to throw a chair somebody. Come on. ah We're going to have stories. We're going shenanigans and fuckery. That's all that matters. but We're going to wrap the show up We're going close the show up. Like I said, guys, you're more than welcome to hang out if you're you're able to.
02:32:26
Speaker
If not, feel free to dip out on no hard feelings. Here's a little Sam and Kate. And I'll be back close this son of a child as soon as it's true.
02:32:36
Speaker
Samuel moved into that house in 74.
02:33:20
Speaker
And the Coopers moved in right next door 75
02:33:30

Sam's old friends and neighbors retired and moved out of state
02:33:40
Speaker
But they passed on an old family home to their daughter Kate He was so happy to see again the girl who grew up next door
02:34:00
Speaker
But that light that had been in her wasn't there anymore
02:34:10
Speaker
The first time he met Katie's husband he wouldn't shake his hand He knew that Danny would rather not live next door to a black man
02:34:29
Speaker
It wasn't too long before he heard the yelling right through his wall But when he'd see Kate the next day she'd run off Said she'd had a fall
02:34:49
Speaker
Sam never had a doll but he looked at the gate like his own
02:34:59
Speaker
It didn't matter if she was in a strong or come back full grown. He was in a fight no more, but if you needed him, he'd come unwound.
02:35:18
Speaker
She was on the family that he had left in that South Texas town.
02:35:30
Speaker
Early in morning he heard Katie scream for her life
02:35:39
Speaker
And he knew right then that nothing would be the same after that night
02:36:00
Speaker
We'll be right back.
02:36:29
Speaker
Before Danny pulled that pistol, he knew his fate.
02:36:39
Speaker
Only seven rounds into his chest, the gun couldn't hold eight.
02:36:48
Speaker
Yes, they've never had daughter, but he looked at the gate like his own.
02:36:59
Speaker
Didn't matter if she was in a strong or come back for long
02:37:07
Speaker
He wasn't in a fighter no more But when she needed him, he came unwound Cause she was her own family He had left in that South Texas town
02:37:38
Speaker
She pushes her around in stroll by their brand new home
02:37:47
Speaker
No one has seen her from Samson's at night It all went down The rumor is Katie's got nice new neighbor in her Colorado town
02:38:31
