On today’s show, a very glum Joe has a match report on the emotional rollercoaster that was Spurs' 3-2 defeat to Brighton. From cruising at 2-0 to setting an unwanted Premier League record, we’ll unpack how things fell apart so quickly. We’ll break down the key moments, highlight standout performances (and not-so-standout ones), and hear what Ange Postecoglou had to say about the ‘worst defeat’ of his time at Spurs. It’s a tough one to relive, but we can get through it together!

Recap of Tottenham's Loss

00:00:08
officialgspn
Hello and welcome to the Daily Tottenham Podcast from the Global Sports Podcast Network and today it is of course a bit of a glum one because it was a sad Sunday for us on the south coast as I along with all Spurs fans am feeling that post match pain. As Spurs do it to us again with Tottenham throwing away a two goal lead to somehow lose in spectacular and demoralising fashion.

Postecoglou's Reaction

00:00:29
officialgspn
in the defeat that Ange Postecoglou called the worst of his tenure. Could this be a significant moment for Spurs? Is it this season's Chelsea defeat? We hope not, as we break down the key moments, stats, standout performances and reactions from Ange and his very disappointed players. Do remember you can have your say at GSPN Tottenham on all social media. um For those of you who haven't seen the game, I envy you, um or certainly if you turned off off after that after half an hour,
00:00:55
officialgspn
um Then that was all the joy you were going to get out of it. So let's just break down exactly what happened.

Tottenham's Initial Lead

00:01:00
officialgspn
So Spurs did come out firing. Brennan Johnson continued his fine form. That's one plus point, I suppose. He opened the scoring after a superb through ball from Dominic Solanke. It was Johnson's sixth goal in six games, further silencing those early season critics. Tottenham doubled their lead soon after through James Madison, who capitalised on another great pass from Solanke.
00:01:19
officialgspn
though Bart Vobruggen should have done better with Madison's shot. Tune him up by the 37 minute Spurs appear to be in complete control and well on their way to extending their winning streak to six games. I certainly was messaging all my friends and people in my Spurs groups and telling my in-laws and stuff that this is our season. um The shame and embarrassment I feel at that now is overwhelming.

Brighton's Comeback

00:01:40
officialgspn
um The game did change entirely after the break. Brighton came out with a renewed intensity and within two minutes of the restart Cara Matoma, who was excellent by the way, his dangerous cross led to a poor clearance from Destiny U Doggy, allowing Yankuba Minte to slot home for Brighton's first goal. with The momentum swung heavily in the home side's favour at that point, it's just 13 minutes later Matoma was at it again, setting up Giorgina Ruta who equalised after twisting past Miki van der Venne to slot the ball into the bottom corner, van der Venne should have done better, he was really, he was beating all ends up there.
00:02:10
officialgspn
um The winner came in the 75th minute when Ritter showed immense determination to keep the ball in play and set up Danny Wellebeck who headed home to complete the remarkable comeback. The Amex erupted and Spurs had absolutely no response.
00:02:23
officialgspn
Bryant's manager Fabian Herzler was understandably thrilled post match. He said the win was fully deserved. The players showed amazing character. We didn't change much tactically at halftime, but the intensity, the belief that was changed. It's a great moment for this team. um Yes, I agree in some to to kind of some extent, they did push up on us a lot more.
00:02:40
officialgspn
and that second half they were very luster in the first half um and we really allowed ourselves to be kind of dominated and cowed so it was kind of a bit a bit of both i suppose we felt like i don't know not that we sat deeper but they were more intense we couldn't get our passing game going and i think that rattled us ah so let's have a look at a few key stats Brighton had seven shots to Spurs five Brighton 54 possession over Spurs is 46 possession now obviously um That's kind of been a, us having a little bit less possession has been a good thing for for Spurs this season as we have counterattacked a little bit, but but not so in this game.

Spurs' Defensive Struggles

00:03:12
officialgspn
Three goals in 30 minutes for Brighton and it's the 10th time Spurs have lost after leading by two or more goals in the Premier League. Bit of a disappointing stat that.
00:03:20
officialgspn
um obviously spread over the whole history of the Premier League so not sure what that means but it's just it's just another way to add to our misery today isn't it um yeah and as I said Brighton dominated that second half they were relentless in their pressing turned the game around um had 14 shots to our three in the second half which shows you the story of that half um And yeah, we'll get on to it later, but, um, but Andrew Foster Cogley really highlighted the team's failure to compete for Jules as a key issue. Like I say, I mean, I don't think the competitors didn't win any, um, I suppose really struggled to adapt to Brighton's intensity once the momentum shifted. Um,

Collapse Under Pressure

00:04:20
officialgspn
So let's talk about where the Gamers won and lost. Well, um the key to Brighton's turnaround was really the second half intensity and the way they pressed Spurs out of the game in the first half. Tottenham were dominant, quick, decisive, um but just just couldn't maintain that level of performance after the break. um Defensively, Spurs were vulnerable, particularly down the flanks where Matoma reeked havoc. He was outstanding by far the man in the match.
00:04:42
officialgspn
um and as we said Oodagi's felt clearance for that that first goal was a crucial turning point and Tottenham really unraveled from there the confidence went. Antipostocogli was livid after the game he described the defeat as the worst since he took charge saying that was an unacceptable second half we were nowhere near where we should be um he didn't mince words about the collapse he added we didn't compete we lacked intensity and we got what we deserved it's the most disappointed I've been since I've been here.
00:05:07
officialgspn
um He was visibly frustrated. He looked furious on the pitch at full time and his hand in his pockets, clearly trying to work out what on earth had gone wrong and how they'd thrown away such a commanding league. Spurs defensive fragility was also compounded by a bit of poor game management, I'd say. And
00:05:21
officialgspn
As James Madison pointed out, we couldn't deal with the momentum shift. When the first goal went in, it felt like attack after attack, we didn't weather the storm like the best teams do.
00:05:35
officialgspn
So let's look at the best and worst

Player Performances

00:05:37
officialgspn
players. um For Brighton, as I said, Kauru and Matoma was a standout performer who was absolutely electric. um Endless joy, kind of. down that left-hand side, right-hand side, drifting all across the kind of midfield and the tack. He was absolutely fantastic. um Provided two crucial assists, really caused most of the defensive problems that Spurs had. Jorgini Ritter also impressed with his goal, a really tidy finish, um kind of like a little turn and finish into the bottom corner, and then obviously an assist for the winner. um Danny Welbeck hates it as a former Arsenal play, deserves a bit of praise, um had some excellent movement.
00:06:11
officialgspn
and obviously scored that decisive third goal for Spurs. Brennan Johnson continues his impressive run with another well-taken goal. um Hard to criticise the forwards. I know the forwards are kind of um ah relied upon to defend in Angie's system, but at the end of the day, two assists for Solanke and um Johnson getting his sixth goal in six games. Hard to criticize that. The problems were really, really defensively. um Obviously your doggy's mistake led to the first Brighton goal. I'm kind of reticent to criticize him too much because he is obviously only 21 and these things happen. I don't want to pick out, like that was the moment that turned the game, but it's not necessarily his fault that turned the game. If you, if if you understand what I mean, um because the whole defense collapsed really.
00:06:53
officialgspn
Um, yeah, again, and, and she said Spurs lacked the fight they needed to secure the result. Uh, he said, we accepted our fate in the second half. And that's not something I've seen from this team before. It's a terrible loss. Um, yeah. And, uh, in terms of Brighton, Bartver Bruggen.
00:07:11
officialgspn
ah The keeper, despite Bryant's win, had a bit of a shaky performance, nearly cost his side. um Obviously, he should have done better with Madison's goal, and that could have been curtain to them. Sadly, for Spurs, it wasn't. And as we said, with Doggy and particularly van der Venne, I'd probably kind of reluctantly pick out as well, um who struggled ah defensively after half time. um Write me back with some kind of final thoughts in just a sec, but do you have a story to tell that the world needs to hear?

League Competitiveness

00:08:06
officialgspn
It really was a tale of two halves. I suppose were dominant in the first half, but collapsed under pressure in the second for Brighton. They really showcased their resilience, their belief, the quality they possess in attack. We knew they were a good side. That's why it was so exciting to be ah dominant in that first 30 minutes and that first half overall.
00:08:24
officialgspn
and I suppose kind of from that high we got the real low and Brighton showed what team they are in in the second half and while Spurs showed what they can do in the first half they also really exposed what they need to work on in the second so yeah so real game of two halves for for both teams um again Ritter was great Matova was outstanding what a player what a player and any other day I'd have loved watching him it's just a shame that the team he was destroying with Spurs. Also a bit of a reminder of the quality, I think, across the league. And by maybe three or four teams in the division, every team is pretty good. In one way or another, there are no kind of easy games. It's not like it was 10 years ago where you can kind of rely on beating everybody outside the top four. um And then if you want to get in those Champions League spots, you just got to get results against them. There are 10, 11, 12, 13 good teams at this division.
00:09:20
officialgspn
Look, a couple of weeks off now, um well, not from football, a lot of players are going away on international duty.

Reflections and Future Hopes

00:09:26
officialgspn
um Like, obviously, for Spurs, him from an England point of view, Dominic Sun IKEA's James Madison isn't. And for those players who haven't been called up, hopefully a bit of time on the training ground. and and kind of looking back at what went wrong in the Brighton game and learning from it. There's kind of no, with a bit of the rest of being too kind of and grand about this, because it is only football after all, but it does mean a lot to us. um kind of I like to look at things that there's no mistakes in life, only lessons. And hopefully there'll be some lessons that that Spurs can take from this. And Posto Colgloo will have that time to regroup ahead of the West Ham game.
00:10:05
officialgspn
um in a couple of weeks' time. Bit of a shame to go into the international break, having had so much momentum and in such a ah hot run of form to kind of go in with a defeat and such a kind of chastening defeat as well. um Hopefully some lessons learned about how to close out games, how to manage games. I think it's one that Spurs fans and Brighton fans are gonna remember for a long time. I've got no animosity towards Brighton. In fact, I really like them. It's a well-run club. ah Had a great time with Joe on the Brighton crossover pod last week, so congratulations to them.
00:10:34
officialgspn
um And yeah, I hope that they're all enjoying it, but just a bit of a bit of a gutting one for Spurs. um Right, don't forget, I'm going to be back ah tomorrow morning with a deep dive of where it all went wrong, kind of breaking things down in a lot more detail um and kind of what Spurs need to do as they prepare to face London rivals West Ham after the international break. Remember you can have your say at GSP and Tottenham on all social media. um It is worth getting in touch as well because we're doing our very first correspondent special where we hear from the listeners that's going to come out On Thursday, Scott and Christina are gonna be taking you through some of your thoughts so far this season and kind of ah responding to them.
