Introduction and Episode Theme

Hello and welcome back to the Daily Tottenham Podcast from the Global Sports Podcast Network. My name is Scott Duke Giles and I'm back today with, um well, I guess, what can we call it, Talking Thursdays or something like that. Well, it's a correspondence.
00:00:26
officialgspn
um episodes um So I'll be kind of reading some of the kind comments or um kind of insightful comments that you guys have left on our social channels. so and um yeah just kind of I'm giving voice to the people, I'm hearing what the people have to say and maybe if if if if the mood should strike me giving a response or an opinion to that comment.
00:00:46
officialgspn
um So let's just get straight

Tottenham vs Brighton: Predictions and Outcomes

00:00:49
officialgspn
into it then. um I have a series of kind of good comments from someone called Joe Croft from TikTok. um One of them, ah and ah ah of perhaps you can tell when this was written, said, Love Ange, don't think Brighton have the experience at the end of the day, but I'm not sure we do either, unfortunately.
00:01:08
officialgspn
So, yeah, I mean, kind of insightful, Joe. I mean, you kind of that was quite predictive, um and so especially in terms of not sure we do either, unfortunately. um Yeah, that was I haven't really had my say on that game yet. So allow me to.
00:01:25
officialgspn
ah piggyback off Joe's comment and give some reaction to the Brighton game. um I thought it was punishing enough to have Alan Smith on commentary for that first half. Even when we were playing really well in the first half, I was annoyed because Alan Smith should not really be commenting on Tottenham games because he He's yeah actively disgruntled when we're playing well and then he really revels in our failure. So that was to kind of made our capitulation all the worse, to be honest. um But it was a complete nightmare, wasn't it?
00:01:57
officialgspn
um Yeah, kind of I think of when when did their goals come in the 47th to 65th minute, um just a complete capitulation.

Analyzing Tottenham's Performance

00:02:07
officialgspn
the kind of the one We've seen many but many times before, which in theory should make us quite well versed in our reactions to it. I feel like I've kind of developed a bit of a technique with dealing with, um oh God, I'm not going to say the word, but ah but when we put in a something e performance as sp e-performance. I have like a um a system to how I deal with it. i mean It's quite ruthlessly efficient with how I deal with spursiness. I feel like ah you know i could be i could I could give sessions to other Tottenham fans who kind of need to deal with it. um I won't go into what it was because I feel like I need to monetize it. and so if anyone um yeah and you can You can pay me a a lean sum and i'll I'll give you my technique. It was rubbish, wasn't it? and and as As I've kind of mentioned a few times,
00:02:53
officialgspn
on this podcast this season. um you kind of think about when When their third goal went in, you kind of think, oh, that is so rubbish. But at the same time, there is 25 minutes left, plus added time, probably about 30 minutes left. we can you know If we can somehow rally ourselves, or only one behind, like maybe we can come back. And I know that would be mad, because it's already free too.
00:03:12
officialgspn
um But there was again, there was nothing. And that's happened to us a few times this season, where we really get the stuffing knocked out of us. And I guess maybe when you're going hard at a game for that long, as we did as we were in the first half, and putting so much into it. And so I guess we scored too. So we um mentally, we might have checked out. And when Brighton scored their third, maybe we just completely checked out even more.
00:03:35
officialgspn
um Yeah, I don't know. It was it was ah hopelessly disappointing. I think Udogi had a poor game, but he's young. So this that's some and know you come you can't necessarily get too annoyed with that to an extent. But at the same time, he's starting week in, week out. and you know, it's not good if he's making those kind of

Tottenham's European Aspirations

00:03:57
officialgspn
mistakes. I've seen a lot of fallout about Romero. um This is something that i've I've raised on the podcast before where I was kind of a bit dubious earlier in the season because I thought a lot of the goals we were conceding were his fault. I didn't really necessarily feel like that on whenever it was Sunday. But I think there's been I've kind of listened to a few people on the radio talking about Romero and is he overrated? And it's funny how this conversation is starting now and not when
00:04:24
officialgspn
there were goals that were patiently his fault kind of earlier in the season. So that's an interesting narrative to emerge from the game. um But, you know, i I can't really, I can't even think about it that much, to be honest, because it does my head in and I start thinking about Alan Smith again. But it was a super disappointing game.
00:04:46
officialgspn
which has harmed our chances, um I guess, of of ah kind of getting into Europe, maybe.

Tottenham Takeover and Financial Ethics

00:04:52
officialgspn
I know by the end of the season, we might look back at that and think maybe Brighton might have been a you know up there with us at the end of the season. And Joe Croft goes on to say, need some European football next year. And I think Joe might be referring to um ah the Champions League there. So need some European football, Champions League football next year.
00:05:13
officialgspn
He's scared of Villa. He says, I'm scared of Villa 100%, but we do seem to be able to win against smaller teams and struggle against the big teams. So that's ah yeah that's an interesting insight. I think Villa definitely have a capacity to get results against bigger teams in a way that perhaps we don't. I know remember they beat Arsenal twice last year and so um it felt like Tottenham against the bigger teams last year certainly struggled a little bit more.
00:05:38
officialgspn
um So that's an interesting point. i think I really think the battle for Europe, any European positions, is going to be really tough this year because there's a lot of flawed sides that aren't the big two, essentially. And, you know, that and conceivably they could all be relatively decent. um So yeah, that's that's ah that's a slight worry on my part, I should think. um So yeah, let's let's move away from um the Brighton game and potential top four chat.

Cup Competitions vs League Focus

00:06:07
officialgspn
So what Joe and I were speaking about a bit last week and the potential
00:06:11
officialgspn
Tottenham takeover. And um we welcome correspondence from anyone, from anyone, anyone at all, including ah someone who has commented under one of our posts, known only to us as Billy Beacoballs.
00:06:25
officialgspn
um so ah So thank you Billy Big Balls for getting in touch. is His avatar is of the pink panther doing a shrug, which perhaps indicates Billy Big Balls ambivalence towards Tottenham or life, I don't know.
00:06:41
officialgspn
um So i'm Billy Bibbles, he's a man, he's a concise, I say he's a man, and he's probably a man, but you know, who knows. um He very concisely ah puts it, he says, no, don't want to be an oil club.
00:06:57
officialgspn
um So thank you, Billy Big Balls. And um I think a lot of Tottenham fans would agree with your your viewpoint there. And then there's a slight misspelling on the word want, which is not doesn't kind of bode well for Billy Big Balls. I don't know if you're and kind of in a kind of at school or um maybe, I don't know, ah in a job where you kind of need to write. But that's I mean, even if you are, it's just a typo. You were typing fast. You wanted to communicate your point quickly.
00:07:24
officialgspn
um I think a lot of Tottenham fans would agree with you, Billy Bibbles. And this is something that Joe and I alluded to, where it doesn't feel like we're in, I don't know, it's kind of contradict myself a little bit, given how I started the poll with the discussion of the Brighton game. But um a lot of Tottenham fans don't feel like we're in the position where we need a financial takeover like Newcastle did. And, you know, a lot of, I think, you know, Tottenham fans wouldn't want kind of ah money from a kind of Arab oil state, to put it so plainly. And so, and I think I would be in that camp as well. So, ah well summed up. But then to offer a alternative opinion, THFC Theo, thanks very much for getting in touch, he replies and he says, no, we would rather map a mate.
00:08:11
officialgspn
um So, THFC Theo setting his sights very high. um I wonder whether THFC Theo thinks that maybe we need to kind of invest in other parts of the squad before we would get in Bapei. um Because otherwise, you know what i mean what happens when Brian Heald comes back on loan?
00:08:29
officialgspn
as ah I suppose Mbappe is going to be fighting it out with Brian Heel. I mean, you know, it's good for Mbappe. I mean, he's not set the world alight in his first few weeks at Real Madrid. so Give him time. I know. I don't care. I don't really care how Mbappe does. I don't care if he flops around with it. That'd actually be quite funny. um And then maybe he would come to us. um So it was interesting to see the two sides of the the coin there, and that's very much um Joe and I ah kind of alluded to that potential divergence happening within the Tottenham fanbase. So it's it's interesting. And like yeah, we we really need um we really need um ah kind of more debate about this if this is going to happen. i'm I'm pretty sure it will come.

Legacy of Welsh Players at Tottenham

00:09:10
officialgspn
And so in terms of the bigger picture, more top four chat right now. um There's a person called user8i who commented, um not a chance we did not build our starting 11 enough. Chelsea strengthened and they nearly caught Spurs last season. So the best we can really do is fifth or sixth. I'd rather focus on the cups.
00:09:30
officialgspn
So this is an interesting thing now, because we have quite a lot of cup action coming back after the international break. We play AZ Alkmaar after we play West Ham at home um and in the Europa League. And then we have a game against City, which we really could have done with an easier draw, a home game against City in the round of 16 in the EFL Cup, which is on the 30th of October, I do believe, Wednesday night, 8.15 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
00:09:57
officialgspn
um And had the look of him um after the Brighton game. is for You guys have probably seen the videos and the pictures where he's looking massively defeated. um And um he had the look of someone who thought, oh my god, is this is this what it's going to be like? I'm the manager of this team. And he's already been there for a season. So he's probably thinking we had a great win against United. um And now we've kind of thrown it away. And I wonder whether he might be thinking,
00:10:26
officialgspn
God, I need to win something because I've kind of said, you know, I've I win everything in my second season. So I really should try and win something. Otherwise, I look like a bit of a chump. So I wonder where he's going to give the cups a good go. I think he sort of did last year, but he was let down by perform in that performances. I remember we got knocked out by Fulham and we got out knocked out in the EFL Cup and we got knocked out by City in the FA Cup, of course, that Nathan Akay let go.
00:10:51
officialgspn
um I mean, a lot of Tottenham fans, again, would agree with your statement, I think, use the 8-I, um and that you know we would rather focus on the cups as well, um because we desperately want to win something. And it's been a while since I've seen football at Wembley, so I wouldn't mind another trip to Wembley to see a semi-final or a final, even though I know it will end in the potential heartbreak.
00:11:12
officialgspn
um So, yeah, so much to think about there, guys. so um Please keep your um comments and your insights coming in. um Billy Big Balls, again, thank you for having a great name about and giving your um ah opinion about the geopolitical state of football. um You're well placed. You're as good a place as any to do so.
00:11:35
officialgspn
Right, so we're in the middle of the international break now Tottenham fans, which means that um it means a few things means that maybe we won't be putting out as regular content. So you might have to deal with out hearing our dulcet tones for a little bit. um And we have international football to watch. And whether I mean, I remember saying on the previous international break podcast, I normally dedicate myself to the arts.
00:11:55
officialgspn
yeah during the international break which I actually I do do you know I now I've started I've been reading a lot more and there's no Champions League tonight so I'll probably don't know I might draw a picture or something um but it will be interesting to see what happens in some of the international games especially of Wales because our Brennan Johnson has scored six goals in six games. And I've said this before on the podcast, but I think um he his role for Wales will be really crucial going forward and with this kind of Craig Bellamy led revolution. And so I thought we could do a little history with the Duke, very quick section, and look at Tottenham's previous Welsh players. And we all know kind of the recent names. um You're talking your Brennan Johnsons, Joe Rodon, Ben Davis,
00:12:45
officialgspn
Gareth Bale of course, I mean probably up there with Wales' as greatest ever player, probably the greatest ever player. um I had a very good Welsh friend at university who loved him, as in like deified him which was quite nice. um Other players in recent times, Chris Gunter,
00:13:03
officialgspn
um Simon Davis. um The aforementioned Pat van der Howl, who um as regular listeners will know, um Joe and I talked about, um because yeah as a player who played for Tottenham and Everton, and whose ah biography was called Psychopaths, he was a Welshman. But you know, with history with the Duke, we take you far back. And so I want to tell you tell you about some legends who have played for Tottenham and Wales starting with someone called Ron Burgess who was born in 1917 and he captained the league title winning team of 1951. He captained Wales and he died in 2005 and then is in his obituary the Independent um said that he was to have a titanic presence at Tottenham Hotspur. It also went on to say if one man embodied the ethos of the village visionary manager Arthur Rowe It was the genial, prematurely balding Welshman. So thank you, um Ron Burgess, for your services to Tottenham Hotspur and your premature baldness. um Other great players, Cliff Jones, of course, we all remember him. Well, I suppose younger fans will remember him from his regular appearances at White Hart Lane um when he ran on the pitch as a very old man.
00:14:20
officialgspn
um when the during Tottenham's farewell to White Hart Lane, the last game at White Hart Lane when we invited legends back onto the pitch. okay so Cliff Jones he was born in Swansea in 1935 and amazing 315 appearances for Tottenham, scoring 135 goals.
00:14:37
officialgspn
between the years 1958 and 1968. His successes include being part of the double winning side, part of the 1962 Cup winning team and also the 1963 European Cup winner side. He was capped 59 times for Wales in a time where they didn't play that many games, especially compared to now, so which is really impressive, and he scored 16 goals.
00:14:59
officialgspn
I think I speak for, well, I speak for all Tottenham fans when we say maybe we could have, we could do quite well with a Cliff Jones running in behind in this system, I think. um So yeah, absolute legends, Tottenham and Welsh legends. um Another Tottenham and Welsh legends, Mike England from the same, ah from like a later era, ah and he made 300 appearances for Spurs between the years 1966 and 1975, and is a true Spurs legend. He was capped 44 times, scoring four goals.
00:15:28
officialgspn
He won the FA Cup in 67, the League Cups in 71 and 73, and the UEFA Cup in 72. This man knew how to win. um He went on to manage Wales, of course, from 1979 to 1987. And in his first match as as manager, england Wales beat England 4-1, which I think is um generally widely considered as one of the most famous games in Welsh football history.
00:15:49
officialgspn
um Yeah, so Mike England, another legend. And finally, let's have a little look at Terry Yorath, who was born in 1950 in Cardiff. ah He played for Tottenham between 1979 and 1981. He only made 46 appearances and he scored once, but he's most widely known for being gar Gabby Logan's father. So that's interesting, isn't it? If anyone didn't know that.
00:16:10
officialgspn
um Yeah, Yoraf's big honours were with Leeds, where he won the league championship in the between 1973 and 1974, I think that's when Don Revley was manager, and he reached the final of the UEFA Cup in the 1974-75 season, um two and they lost to Bayern Munich. And he moved for the lean sum of £3,000 to Tottenham in 1979, which, hey, it must spend a lot of money back then.
00:16:37
officialgspn
So yeah, that's history with the Duke today. I hope you've learned something about the history of um players who have played for both, well, Welsh players who have played for Tottenham. And maybe we can all um kind of look out for Brennan Johnson during his international break and hope he continues his lean run of goal-scoring form.

Conclusion and Listener Engagement

00:16:55
officialgspn
All right, that's about it for today. um Thanks so much for listening to the Daily Tottenham Podcast from the Global Sports Podcast Network. um As I say, our podcast will be a little bit more infrequent during the international break, so you're going to have to deal with a little bit of an absence from us for a while, but hopefully you guys have um ah managed to ah kind of... I've set your brains in motion with the debates for from our correspondents and you know more about Welsh players now.
00:17:22
officialgspn
um Anyway, take care of yourselves and have a lovely rest of the international break and we'll be speaking to you very soon. Goodbye.
