Introduction to Tottenham's Defeat

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Tottenham Podcast. My name's Scott Duke-Jarson. In today's episode, we'll be breaking down Tottenham's frustrating 1-0 defeats at Selhurst Park to Crystal Palace, where Anj post to Cogney's men were caught out by strong Palace performance as Jean-Philippe Mateta's goal made the difference. Now, from key mistakes to missed chances, we'll analyse where the game was won and lost and look at how Spurs can bounce back from this result if... I'm sure we can.

um Let's dive into what went wrong and what lessons can be learned for the upcoming fixtures. Remember, you can have your say, it's at GSPN, Tottenham on all social media.

Legal Access and Humorous Anecdotes

00:00:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, so this game, if you weren't at it, it was very hard to access what was happening um legally, that is. um And we're a fan of accessing games in legal methods. Actually, you know what, I don't care. Do do whatever you want. But it was very hard to find. So I tend to, if the game's not on telly,
00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll tend to like listen to it on the radio, as I'm sure lots of lots of you guys will. But then I couldn't find it on any of the BBC 5 live stations, so I thought, all right, it must be on TalkSport. It's not on TalkSport. And so I was ah listening to it West Ham versus ah Man United, like a doofus, and hoping for intermittent update updates from the ah from Salhurst Park. Eventually, I found out that the commentary was on the BBC Sport website, which I couldn't open because I was actually out for a run at the time.
00:01:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I was trying to load it up on me on my app, and my app kept crashing. And so anyway, I ended up listening to the end of the first half and and the whole of the second half. um And and i subsequently, I've seen Match of the Day and seen some of the highlights and stuff. And so I'm well-placed, I think, to give an overview of this game. And the overview was um we didn't really turn up, is the um ah kind of blunt truth of it.

Missed Opportunities and Defensive Performance

00:02:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
didn't have really have that many chances. There are a few in the second half. um Madison forced a good save. Johnson, ah the in a very innocuous incident, the ball bounced off him from a corner and it hit the post. That would have been a very lucky goal. um But not really much else. So Angie Posco will be starting lineup. um Mikey Moore made his Premier League debut, having um been ah compared to Neymar after the AZ Outmar game. And you notice I'm saying that with a certain bit of weariness in my voice, because um I don't think it's great for 17-year-old players to be compared to Neymar after they've played well in the Europa League. But you know that's just me. um Son Hu Minh has continued to be absent through injury, even though he played um the majority of the game against West Ham. Ange said in midweek that he was still struggling. and so
00:03:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, expect the Son injury. It's not really a saga, but Son injury woes, shall we say, to continue. um And I guess, yeah, we we played AZ Outmar on the Thursday in the game. I was at a very rock and roll 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a crew of the Richarlison penalty.

Palace's Victory and Tottenham's Failure

00:03:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah yeah ah But ah Palace themselves, they've kind of been struggling a lot in recent times. They hadn't won so far this season. And they'd look distinctly average. I remember during a particularly quiet Monday morning last week, I watched them play, sorry, not Monday morning, Monday evening. um I watched them, so you could have rock and roll. I was watching them play ah Crystal Palace versus Nottingham Forest on Monday Night Football. And Forest beat them pretty easily. And, ah you know, it was, I was was disappointed, A, in myself that I hadn't found anything better to do that night, and B, in the quality of football. um but And I thought, oh, we should, um
00:04:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, but I thought that we should win against these a lot. But then another part of me thought, OK, I've watched this and it's really disappointing. So we're definitely going to lose. so um And lose we did. So so ah Jean-Philippe Mateta, as I say, scored in the first half. ah Van de Ven was dispossessed deep in his own half after Cristian Romero played him a ridiculously loopy cross-pitch ball.
00:04:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And ah then the ball got sent into the box from Munoz. And Eberretche Eze had an amazing assist where he just flicked it um in midair. And philip John Philippe Matessa was open in the back of the penalty area to slot it away. um And then I guess we responded to that quite well, where vanda as I say, Johnson's kind of the ball that innocuously hit him and then struck the post. And then Henderson ah with his fingertip save to deny Madison right before halftime but um I think I might have said that was in the second half earlier that was they were both just before halftime but aside from that didn't really offer an awful lot and it was ended up being quite a comfortable victory I think for Palace even though they were only one they were up so that might seem strange but on the radio commentary they were keen to point out that this was more of a this was a Palace performance more reminiscent of
00:05:25

last season towards the ah towards the end of the last season with Glazner, rather than some of the performances that they've been turning out in um so far this season. um So before we have a look at where the game was won and lost, let me tell you that this podcast is part of the Global Sports Podcast Network. Recurring Defensive Errors and Impact

00:06:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, in terms of where the game was won and lost again, we've conceded through a defensive error, as I alluded to. um I mean, I said to my neighbour at the West Ham game,
00:06:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
that playing out from the back and making mistakes playing out from the back doesn't really faze me anymore. As I think like a lot of fans of Premier League teams, I feel like we're quite used to it. And even if our teams make a mistake when we're playing out from the back, it's something we begrudgingly admit or begrudgingly accept, is what I should say. um As part of this you know modern philosophy that you think is going to be more exciting than it is, I think, or is always the way of playing it out from the back. You think, oh, you know, if we build it out and we manage to beat the press, it would be so exciting and we'll have all this space. And it it doesn't really turn out like that, does it? It turns out where, um you know, often you give the ball away very rarely does do you kind of does it work perfectly and you set up like a perfect um attack where
00:07:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
You would then bomb me down the wings once you played it out from the back. No, it is often at least a quite mediocre football, I think. um but Anyway, um van Venn kind of receives this floating pass from Romero. That's a nightmare to control for any setback. um And he admittedly doesn't do very well with it and then gives it away to Mignoz. And ah yeah.
00:07:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
and and then they're able to work into the box and Matette is able to slot her home. um It was interesting to see Porro and Romero's um being highlighted in certain analyses, I should say, um where Palace's attack was quite comfortable in getting past them and getting down ah Palace's left, arts so Tottenham's right, and I don't think Porro and um Romero were as strong as they could have been ah down that side.
00:07:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And then I guess it's just a real kind of lack of cutting edge and attack, really. Olkozewski had quite a decent chance where Johnson did well to find him, and then he kind of side-footed it right to the keeper. But that wasn't a great chance. um I just think Son's absence leaves such a hole in Tottenham's attacking structure, really, um which is, I know, kind of ah contradicting myself in some of my points earlier in the season, where I was perhaps slightly dubious of how
00:08:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Son is ah um kind of fitting into the sides and playing playing down the left. um And I think that there's a real overreliance on the right wing when he's not there. So kind of Poirot, Kuduszewski and Johnson. And when like one or a few of them aren't playing well, then we look pretty useless, to be honest. And I didn't feel quite sorry for Mikey Moore, really. I mean, ah how can you yeah how can you not really? I think he kind of struggled to adapt to the pace of it a little bit, which is um It'd be quite weird if he was able to successfully adapt to the pace of the game. um And there's there's a massive difference between, I guess, playing Outmar at home in the Europa League and playing Palace away when Palace are desperate for a win. So I think he kind of struggled with that. and But then there was an exciting adjustment after an hour where we switched to a 4-2-4 with Richarlison and Solanke

Tactical Adjustments and Formation Switch

up top and Verna out wide. And you know me, Tottenham fans, well, if you've listened to
00:09:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
my takes on this podcast before you know that I was robbing my hands of glee, um expecting an incoming masterclass from both with Charleston and Verner. But alas, that didn't really happen and we didn't really create anything, which is a shame. I think ah Palace were all over us and they kind of won everything in the air and won all the second balls and we're just a lot quicker and sharper than us anyway. so um Yeah, I think in terms of I think that's a real kind of I have quite a few well one very good friend He's a palace fan, and I'm sure he's quite happy um But I think it's probably quite a good benchmark for their survival really um Oliver glasner's post-match comments were focused around this performance being um The standard for his sides and I think palace is pressing intensity and midfield dominance with um kind of as a and Munoz pivotal
00:10:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
obviously so key in this game. and ah This win lifts Palace out of the relegation zone and I think they've got a relatively straightforward fixture list in the same way as Wolves. so yeah um Before we get on to the lessons learned for Tottenham, let me tell you that, ah well, let me ask you rather, do you have a story to tell that the world needs to hear? Have you struggled with reaching new audiences who might be who are engaged with your story? It might be time for you to start a podcast.

Inconsistencies and Future Expectations

00:11:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, um I guess in terms of some lessons learned, I suppose the inconsistency this season is rife. We have lots of um
00:11:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
stra We have a few strong performances, and then we have ah ah unexpected losses. I'm thinking of Brighton and Palace in particular here. um And so you know what? I think maybe umm maybe a kind of tempering of expectations is in order. um I don't think ah this side is good enough to challenge for the Champions League. um And my if we get the Europa League, it would be very positive.
00:11:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And this is the kind of inconsistency that comes with being the sort of team that we are. I think the players and manager are slightly deluding themselves by expecting, you know, this and getting really arsy and expected this real high level all the time. but But the way we play, that's just not going to happen. um Yeah, so Mikey Moore's debut, I guess that's another lesson to learn. He ah I think he always like looks bright, you know, and it's so weird to talk about 17 year old eyes. But anyway,
00:12:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
He always um ah no looks the bomb down left. He's quite direct, which is a great sign. um But yeah, he struggled with Palace's physicality. And and then so then there's a perennial question of how can Spurs cope without Son? And is there a tactical solution for the upcoming games? And I don't really know. I mean, Werner's troubles are, um let's let's say, well-known. Let's say Werner's troubles are well-known.
00:12:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Moore doesn't look ready for the Premier League on the bear. They don't really know what he's about and he's been injured for a while. um So yeah, who knows? I can't really pontificate on that. um You could, i think I think, well, I think a big error um was not ah was kind of, I think we should have had the midfield that we ended the West Ham game with. We should have had Sarin there. This point was made on match of the day too. So I'm kind of parroting that opinion. Apologies if anyone's seen that.
00:13:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, I think it would have been um ah more clever to put Tsar back in. ah Because being a palace is always a physical side. you know they've they's kind of That's in their identity. They always have big blokes knocking around. so That's what palaces are. And i think yeah I think that dealing with physical sides is where spurs need to improve, really. i think um against like the wishy-washy unites of this world, I think will generally be okay. But um yeah, it might be it might be difficult when we play play more physical sides. In terms of Tottenham's upcoming games, um well, we've got we've got Villa on the on the weekend um playing...

Upcoming Fixtures and Their Challenges

00:14:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, Michael, no, we're playing City tomorrow. Yeah, okay, so we're playing Man City tomorrow in a game which is at 8.15 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
00:14:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's a nightmare if you're you know someone who actually it's not it's not it's not as bad as um ah other ones, but you know i have to I'm supposed to be kind of you know at work and I'll have to get home and they get the bus. that It's fine. I don't know why I'm complaining. I live quite close to the stadium. It's me moaning on. I've just got to eat my dinner naught really quickly. That's the extent of my troubles.
00:14:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, and then I'll be, uh, and then I'll probably get home quite late and then I have to wake up early. So, you know, it's it's all fine. I mean, you know, I'm not going back. I used to live in, uh, the North for university in Liverpool and I knew Tottenham fans. I met Tottenham fans there who would kind of go up and down from the stadium to Liverpool. So I just need to shut my mouth. Don't I really? Um, yeah. So city tomorrow at eight 15 in the EFL cup. Oh, I mean, who knows about that one? I mean.
00:15:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
We haven't looked great against City under Ange, I don't think, apart from that 3-3. And even that was quite lucky, I think. It's not like we haven't had been able to replicate the success we had under our more defensive um managers and Poch um against City. And so, yeah, I was i don't think many Tottenham fans ah go into that game.
00:15:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll be sitting around. I'll be in my West End feeling as cynical as I normally am about our chances in that game. So yeah, Tottenham vs City tomorrow at 8.15. Before um we're at home against Villa in a game that I think would be quite entertaining on um Sunday at 2pm, where I will be making a return to the North Stand.
00:15:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
um dedicated fans of um where I sit in a stadium, we'll be glad to know because of, again, um yes to tickets our tickets unavailable in the West End. um um yeah so so i mean I think that'll be an exciting game. um Again, Villa are doing really well. they I know they had a draw to Bournemouth at the weekend, but um you know they're a very decent side. and so who's Who's to say? We could be feeling quite those two games. They were quite big games and they will really be dictating the mood around the club. And it's very conceivable that we lose both of them. So, yeah, that'll be interesting to see what happens after that, right? And after that, away to Galatasaray, which given the fact that, you know, we tend to crumble away from home. There's not really an atmosphere which I can see us completely thrive in it, if I'm totally honest Tottenham fans, but
00:16:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hey ho, if anyone's going to Galatas, good luck. um Let us know how you get on. um but yeah so it's it's a tough It's a tough spell coming up, but you've got to try and stay positive and look for yeah look look for look for the positive positive notes and hope hope that we can maybe snag a win

Conclusion and Tease for Next Episode

00:17:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
now. beat Beating City and um putting together a good run in the EFL Cup would be incredible, but I don't think it's going to happen, but it would be incredible.
