Hello and welcome to the Daily Tottenham Podcast from the Global Sports

Tottenham's Comeback Victory Analysis

Global Sports Podcast Network
Podcast Network. I'm Joe Forrester and today we're looking back on Spurs 4-1 comeback victory of Ruston Villa on Sunday. It was an impressive high energy win with some great football played by the home side and a standout performance for new boy Dominic Solanke. Now before we jump in just remember you can have your say at GSPN Tottenham on all social media. So it started badly for Spurs just 14 minutes in Morgan Rogers found the net for Villa. um Another goal from a corner with Vicario under pressure. Rogers basically backed into the keeper, backed into the keeper, and while Vicario managed to save the, um or parry the initial ball in, and Rogers then subsequently scored from that rebound. um Yeah, disappointing. It's become fewer and further between those incidents, but still kind of

Bulls into the box, particularly from corners, is something that Tottenham need to work on. um However, Anj Posterkogli's tactical shifts at halftime were absolutely pivotal. ah There was more of a high press, Anj pushed the fullbacks forward, stretching Villa's defensive line, and the adjustment created space for Tottenham's attackers, with Solanke and Brennan Johnson exploiting those weaknesses. And in the 54th minute, Johnson's equaliser, his fourth of the season and eighth in all competitions, marked a turning point um soon after. Solanke really took the game by the scruff of the neck. scoring two quick goals of excellent positioning and movement um and his absolute, like his first goal was an absolute peach, kind of nice little interchange from the edge of the area, a little through ball s slipped through from Kulesevsky, Dinko for the keeper, really aesthetically pleasing goal um and the double for the forward really underscored Tottenham's newfound efficiency in front of goal. Solanke really showing why he yeah he's justifying that 65 million pound price tag and the cherry on the top came in injury time

When James Madison added the final goal, sublime free kick, his first direct free kick goal of the season, and he does score a few, um brought his Premier League career total to 50 goals. Just lovely, kind of quite close range, really 21, 22 yards out, up and over the wall. Emiliano

Martinez did move to try and get it, like kind of step to his left, but it was just too quick um in that kind of top left hand corner. Yeah, really, really fantastic goal.

Now let's break down some of the key stats from the game. um Spurs had 56% of the ball, ah with a lot of that increasing actually in the second half. Overall, kind of not as dominant on the ball as Andrew's teams have been, but the first half was a little bit flat and that kind of shows why those stats are slightly skewed. um 15 shots for Spurs, eight on target, really exploited Villa's defensive gaps with that aggressive kind of high press pussing pushing the full backs up, as we said. 86% passing acracy accuracy, really allowing Spurs to kind of dictate that tempo and control the game, again, particularly in the second half. um XG of 2.32,

00:03:18

so outscoring that um compared to Villa's 1.77, suggesting maybe they should have had chances, but to be honest, it was a dominant fall that's from Spurs.
00:03:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And Solanke is now scoring a goal every two games, um which to be honest, isn't too bad, given that kind of these role in the team is largely to kind of be a very hard working striker and pressing people. um And he got one as a man of the match award yesterday should be said, um then adding goals to that as well as really lovely cherry on top.
00:03:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And Spurs have this extraordinary record. It is Tottenham's 10th win this season where they have come from behind. that Obviously, that's all competitions, but that is absolutely extraordinary. Spurs love scoring early, but I don't know about you, Tottenham fans. I kind of watch that now and it doesn't really bother me um because I know we'll get goals. It's a very, very strange place to be.
00:04:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
um was probably worth talking about ah James Madison's kind of tactical role. Obviously there's been this kind of huge debate. Who should it be? Madison versus Saar, obviously two players who kind of offer very, very different things. And I think kind of Spurs fans have been edging towards Saar as of late, but actually To be fair, Maders came on for Richarlison, who also kate who came on for Son. Richarlison came off injured. Madison came on for him. To Saara Maders were on the pitch at the same time at that point. It was midfield three of Saara Madison and Busuma with Kulesevsky pushing up more into the front three. um Or almost it kind of being a front two and they were in midfield four.
00:05:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
but um But yeah, Madison kind of doing his thing, um kind of playing in that number 10, number eight role, dropping a little bit deeper to get the ball and didn't look like him and saw steps on each other's toes too much in the kind of 10, 15 minutes they're on the pitch together. um And also given that kind of he was dropped for this game, real kind of statement of intent for him. And it's it's always good to have kind of players pushing each other for for places in the team. It can only lead to kind of an increased quality. um Also, we're talking about Angie's tactical shift. He started with a 4-2-3-1 before kind of moving to a, what you'd probably call a 3-4-3. Yeah, kind of essentially pushing those full backs up really high and kind of having Benton Kerr or Basuma or whoever it was drop in a little bit.
00:05:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And Spurs kind of really managed to, to push Villa wide, particularly in the second half where they nullified their threat a little bit. Um, talking about form Spurs is currently seventh. Um, obviously generally speaking, pretty good runner form recently, nine wins out of 11 in, in all competitions. Um, obviously the defeat to Brighton and palace in there, but apart from that it's pretty good going. So obviously lost to palace last Sunday, then within a week beat city beat Villa. Everything's looking

um scoring a lot of goals as well. Tottenham have got some of the highest attacking stats in the Premier League, and I genuinely think everything's moving in the right direction when it comes to the Costa Poglou, the Costa Coglou project. We'll actually hear some of what the manager had to say in a few moments' time, but first up, do you have a story to tell that the world needs to hear? Have you struggled with reaching new audiences who are engaged with your story? Well, it might be time for you to start a podcast. Let's hear a little bit of what Anja had to say. He was talking about Tottenham's resilience after the game. He said, this team is showing immense character. Coming from behind isn't easy, but we've got to stop making it hard for ourselves with early defensive lapses. But it's all part of the process. On squad rotation and tactics, he yeah noted the effectiveness of substitutions and changing that kind of style of play mid-match. He said, I'm pleased with how the lads are buying into the tactical adjustments and the relentless pace we're aiming for. Each player needs to be ready to adapt.
00:07:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
and future focus, postcardly spoke about balancing attack and defence, saying we're still learning as a squad, especially in terms of defensive discipline, but I've got no doubts about their ability and mentality, kind of echoes what, a little bit about what he said in in the week, wasn't it, in the pre-match press conference as well, where he talked about kind of the need to attack, but also to kind of be defensively pragmatic. It's interesting that perhaps he's changing and evolving as a coach with the kind of added demands of the Premier League.
00:07:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Few injury updates though. So ah Christian Romero picked up an injury after essentially trying to scythe one of the Villa players in half, Morgan Rogers, I think it was. And yeah, he he went off, he went off injured at that point and kind of obviously ah adding that to, um adding that to Mickey van der Ven's injuries out of the hamstring strain at the moment, probably looking at coming back after the international break in December means that Spurs maybe for a week, for a couple of weeks, are going to be without their first choice starting set-about partnerships. Obviously, it's Ipswich at the weekend, but then it is an international break, so you'd hope to have them both back after that. And obviously, Ipswich, no disrespect.
00:08:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah what are one of the weaker teams in the league, so you'd hope we could kind of absorb that. ah But tough game at Galatasaray on Thursday as well. And you're thinking it'll probably be Ben Davis and Radu Dragison starting at centre back, or maybe Archie Gray and Radu Dragison. We'll see. Richarlison came on as a sub, um went off with a hamstring injury himself after assisting Solanke. Postock, who said he's going to be monitored. They're not really sure what's going on there yet. And Wilson-Oderbehr obviously still injured.
00:09:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
um did come back after a hamstring injury, but has had a recurrence in the same area. So it might mean a more prolonged recovery for him. And Jed Spence is continuing his rehab from a groin strain that he got in training. They

00:09:23

do expect him to be back training with the rest of the team soon. So hopefully see him back. He's of course not in that Europa League squad. So if he was to feature, the earliest would be ah this weekend.
00:09:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
do you know what massive win massive win for Spurs though overall as they beat City in the cup beating a direct rival in Aston Villa for those kind of that top four race beating them comprehensively as well um obviously thrashed them a bit apart didn't we Taylor Lander last season so yeah all sunshine and roses um still some defensive weaknesses particularly those kind of that defending from corners and and the way the the goalkeeper is singled out by opposition players there, that is getting better, but and Vicario looks more confident there, but it does still need to be addressed, um and kind of failure to to deal with Palace, when they were quite aggressive and quite physical with us. and then
00:10:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Failure is going to hold on to that lead against Brighton. Let these things happen. But it all does feel like it's moving in the right direction. As I say, nine wins out of 11. It's all looking pretty good. But what do you think? At GSP and Tottenham on all social media. And don't forget to listen tomorrow, where we'll be looking at the tactical tweaks that Sara and Madison offer, um asking which one is best for Angie's midfield. Plus, if you're enjoying the pod, please do remember to give us a review. We love it when you give us five stars. So just saying.
