Introduction and Focus on Recent Defeat

00:00:09
officialgspn
Hello and welcome to the Daily Tottenham Podcast from the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm Joe Forrester and today is Tactics Tuesday and we are going to dive in into, yep, that's right. Sorry, I suppose, fans. Tottenham's recent 3-2 defeat away at Brighton. Sunday afternoon, of course, very disappointed for

Tactical Deep Dive and Manager Comparisons

00:00:25
officialgspn
all of us. I talked about it in the match report. We're going to do a bit more of a deep dive on what happened. also kind of a broader look at aossakogglu and possibly when this leaves spurs heading into the international break. um What's next for Tottenham kind of what Tottenham fans can read into that defeat whether they should read in anything into it at all. And we'll also be comparing Angie's post match reaction
00:00:45
officialgspn
to Antonio Conte's infamous rant after that defeat at Southampton or draw at Southampton, I should say, a couple of seasons ago. We'll be looking at Andrew's philosophy, of course, um tactical breakdown of the

Brighton's Dominance and Key Performances

00:00:57
officialgspn
match. And as I said, what it means for Spurs moving forward. Remember, you can have your say at GSP and Tottenham on all social media. So a quick recap of ah of the game.
00:01:05
officialgspn
Spurs travelled to Brighton, where they suffered a 3-2 defeat in in what turned out to be a tougher wave fixture. um We knew Brighton would be a hard team to to face, of course, but after cruising after 30 minutes or so, I think a lot of Spurs fans thought it was going to be a runaway victory, 6-6, heading into the international break.
00:01:21
officialgspn
it wasn't to be the case. Along with the short of it, Spurs tactically outplayed in several areas. um That high press from from Brighton, of course, um the kind of positional fluidity that that they used, um and to mention himself, Spurs really struggled to keep pace and and win any duels, and particularly the wingers, in particular Matoma, who was just getting endless joy um running at the full backs, and Destiny, a doggy, ultimately,
00:01:50
officialgspn
had a poor game, one that he he'd rather forget.

Shift in Game Momentum and Tottenham's Struggles

00:01:54
officialgspn
Brighton did employ that high press from the start, but it didn't really work um in the in the first half. And actually they found themselves kind of pushed back and pinned back to the edge of their area, as Spurs were much more ferocious and much more effective in the tackle. um Obviously both teams do play that defensive high line. That being said, didn't see much evidence of that.
00:02:17
officialgspn
ah from Brighton in the first half, I don't think it was for a lack of desire to to push further up the pitch. Spurs played really well, had them pinned back, um but what was kind of very different in that second half was Brighton were absolutely ferocious kind of in the tackle and winning those duels and that allowed them to impose themselves on the game a little bit more, push up. And Karim Atoma, as I said, like he's a fantastic player anyway, but just like wonderful, wonderful on the day. And he was particularly effective exploiting ah the kind of space left in behind on the flanks as Spurs continued to try and play that high line, which obviously only works if you are going to win those midfield battles, which we didn't. So he was getting in behind again and again and again, leaving Romero and
00:03:10
officialgspn
and Van Aven backtracking, and again, Van Aven had a game to forget, I would say. um Now, obviously, a long-term theme, kind of, under-ange has been set pieces, and kind of not such an issue in this game.
00:03:33
officialgspn
But balls into the box nonetheless cause problems. We struggled with crosses. Two of the goals came from from crosses. and And in particular, it's that Danny Wahlbeck one, that winning goal that you would you would look at, kind of free header, absolutely unmarked. I mean, it's, yeah, the so Spurs do do struggle when when that aerial ball comes into the box. They struggle to know what to do with it. A lot of criticism has been left at the keeper kind of ah over the past season and a bit.
00:04:02
officialgspn
when it comes to defending that kind of that kind of moment, but the end of the day, ball into the box, an open play, centre-back should deal with that. They completely um failed to do so.

Midfield Issues and Substitution Impact

00:04:12
officialgspn
Also, you really noticed in that second half, as I mentioned, Spurs failing to control the midfield. Now, one particular issue in there might be,
00:04:22
officialgspn
um Or I suppose one thing to consider might be maybe getting Saar and Persuamer on earlier. They came on when Spurs were already 3-2 down. Now that's probably too late. um Given that Spurs couldn't get their foot in the ball, couldn't control that midfield, which was Kuleszewski, Madison and Ben Tancour. Now, the only player in that three who explicitly is supposed to do that and is that kind of player and can kind of be more ah metronomic and breaking up play and that kind of thing is um Rodrigo Ben Tancour.
00:04:54
officialgspn
He was largely anonymous, um and as I say, Persuamer and Tsar came on probably too late and brightened by that point with absolutely flying. and Yeah, a couple of players coming in. It's probably a little bit late for them to to change the game at that point.

Schedule Challenges and Performance Factors

00:05:11
officialgspn
um Obviously, as always, Postakoglu kind of remains committed to his philosophy, high pressing, generally speaking, possession or dominance, goals on the turnover if not on the counter attack, playing football on the um the front foot. It's a long-term strategy. um Obviously, he's building that that squad for the future.
00:05:30
officialgspn
Obviously, Spurs coming into this winning five games out of five. um Also, having played in Thursday away in Hungary, Brighton had had a whole week to prepare for the game. Spurs have played Sunday, gone to Hungary Thursday, come back and play it again on Sunday. um It's obviously not not an excuse, and we're not talking traveling to the moon and back, but it gives you less game prep time because you're prepping for that game, you wrap that up on Thursday night, you're prepping for the next game. it's a lot There's a lot to think about. um And yeah, I don't know. I don't know if that's reflected maybe in the, in the complacency and the lack of game management in the second half. Um, by and large, I wouldn't say it's time to panic for Spurs. I'd say kind of saw what was great about Tottenham. So it was poor about Tottenham. It exposed quite a lot of, uh, naivety in the second half, but by and large, the.
00:06:19
officialgspn
the kind of the needle is moving in the right direction if that metaphor even works. Supposedly progressing in the right direction, things have been good under post cochlear recently.

Optimism for Rebound and Long-term Progress

00:06:27
officialgspn
I wouldn't be surprised to see Tottenham bounce back with a win against West Ham after the international break. And generally speaking, things are going well. ah But it did just show there are still some things to work on. Something that both the highlight, ah that's both the highlighter, both the manager and James Madison pointed out.
00:06:44
officialgspn
as we'll be talking about um a little bit later on, but I think with those young players obviously didn't feature on um on Sunday, but Bergval, Gray, Lancashire, Mikey Moore did come on and look quite bright to be fair, but like there's clearly something going for the future and everything's moving in the right direction, but it was a chastening experience in many ways. um Right, we're going to talk ah a little bit more broadly about post-cog glue and kind of what we can expect from him this season and what the Bryant defeat tells us in just a few moments time. But first up...

Postecoglou's History and Team Improvement

00:07:37
officialgspn
So one of the things that's been discussed um recently is Andrew Posterkogli's claims around what he's able to do in his second season.
00:07:44
officialgspn
And a big shout out to the athletics ah tactics podcast. um This was a ah topic of kind of lively discussion and with Jay Harris, brilliant football correspondent who covers Spurs for the athletic.
00:07:58
officialgspn
ah And it was kind of very, very interesting. So just to kind of have a little look back on on that what it is the post-ocology has done previously. Obviously, he's he's mentioned kind of his success in second seasons. That's been well documented. um He's start off with his time at Brisbane Raw in the A-League.
00:08:15
officialgspn
his team improving massively between the first and second season, scoring more goals, conceding fewer better possession numbers, increased pressing intensity. Those are the key metrics. You can see things broadly going the same way for Spurs. um Then obviously off to Yokohama Marinos. I say obviously, you may not know that um because actually I didn't before researching this podcast at Yokohama Marinos in Japan's J-League. And Pastor Koglu took that team that finished 12th in the league, only 18 teams in the J-League as well, I believe.
00:08:43
officialgspn
um led him to a league title in his second season, ah first trophy they won in 15 years, but it all clicked under Ange. Celsic, same story, in his first season there were 25 points behind Rangers, um and I think Spurs fans can kind of look at a disappointing and patchy first season under Ange last time out and maybe recognise elements of that. um In the second season they won the league, um but not just the league, they ultimately claimed that domestic treble.
00:09:10
officialgspn
and kind of he's argued that his success doesn't happen by accident. and He kind of doubles down on his approach in his second year, refines the tactics, pushes the ah philosophy a little bit harder, kind of this is something that Jay Harris was saying. And with Spurs, you are seeing those morangie elements look like they start to click. ah But you're only as good as, you're welcome into the press anyway, I guess, or social media, you're only as good as your um last result. so obviously going into an international break a couple of weeks from no Premier League football and is obviously going to be a little bit disappointed for the narrative not to be winning six out of six and continuing this blistering bstering one of run of form but to have kind of a horrible reverse defeat and and break that record where Spurs have lost from two or more goals down more than any team.
00:09:59
officialgspn
in Premier League history.

League Comparisons and Unique Challenges

00:10:01
officialgspn
um Obviously, it is obviously it's worth saying that the Premier League is a completely different kettle of fish compared to the A League, the J League, Scottish Premiership. Level of competition absolutely unmatched and just the quality throughout the league, as I mentioned on ah Monday's podcast, really is, um yeah, exceptionally high and higher than you say anywhere in the world. um Like I say, fantastic start, though, generally for Spurs. After that, Arsenal defeating the Derby, winning five out of five. Look, Brennan Johnson scored again on Sunday, so that makes it six out of six. So by and large, things moving in the right direction. Angie's tactical plans are being taken on board a little bit more, but that being said, there are still clearly areas to improve on, um and perhaps they come from the club's or the player's mentality. We're talking about that in just a second.
00:10:55
officialgspn

Now, really interesting piece by Dan Kilpatrick, writing in the Standard, and slightly controversially, but interestingly, comparing Anne Foster Cogloo's post-match response ah to the Bright Feet to Antonio Conte's infamous rant after the three-wheel draw with Southampton ah two seasons ago. So this is kind of where it went on.

Managerial Responses to Setbacks

00:11:49
officialgspn
and just obliterated all his players and the fans and everything and the final nail in the coffin for for Conte and his relationship with the club. Just to remind you a little bit about what he said. He said they can change the manager but the situation cannot change. A lot of people thought he seemed angry, resigned to that fact.
00:12:10
officialgspn
and he he was implying that Spurs were there was something inherently wrong with Spurs and the DNA of the club that meant they have a ceiling for success in inverted commas which means they can be a top 5, a top 4 club but cannot progress any further fundamentally it's just not possible um and it has been a bit annoying watching him tear it up with Napoli in Italy and do quite well because you sort of want to go you're the problem mate not us um and I don't believe that any club has DNA that
00:12:44
officialgspn
cool or or certainly any kind of legacy that can't be fixed. um But it is a bit, yeah, it's a bit trying for Spurs fans. um In contrast, after the Brighton defeat, Postdoc Ogloo said, we just weren't competitive. We didn't win our duels. We lacked intensity and we didn't deliver the basics of the game. Dan Kilpatrick in his article pointing out, there's a key difference here.
00:13:02
officialgspn
ah The positive cog who's taking responsibility, saying it's on him to fix these issues, whereas Conte saw an unfixable problem, whereas Anne sees something he can work on, and that has to be encouraging. So the question is, what's the Brighton defeat, mentality or tactics?

Necessary Tactical and Mental Improvements

00:13:18
officialgspn
James Madison himself admitted we need to be better mentally, suggesting the team may have like focus, but there are, as I pointed out, clear tactical flaws too.
00:13:27
officialgspn
um particularly with that that system when you fail to win those midfield battles it does seem to fall apart. and It's hard to say whether it's kind of a deeper cultural issue within the squad or kind of growing pains as they adapt to Angie's style. I don't want to be reactive here look we won five games before this.
00:13:44
officialgspn
in a row. um I would say it's growing pains and broadly speaking as I've mentioned things are moving in the right direction and hopefully we're learning more and more ah game by game and week by week to avoid similar things happening but the only way to learn is to feel that pain first sadly.

Upcoming Matches and Tactical Adjustments

00:14:00
officialgspn
So what's next for Spurs? Well, some big challenges ahead. Man City in the League Cup, as you said, West Ham in the league as well, Europa League football kind of balancing multiple competitions, but that's part of it if you want to be a big successful club. Foster Cogley may need to make some tactical adjustments.
00:14:18
officialgspn
um with all that football to play and given that different personnel are going to come in for example if it's going to be draggers in and davis coming in at the back then a little bit less pace so might have to make some some changes there if he finds himself with jed spence for example playing left wing back in the league cup or whatever it might be instead of your doggy you have to make a some kind of allowances for everything right foot on the left lots of different things and we have seen a little bit more tactical flexibility from anj so the breakfast game and the manual night game, spurs seeding a little bit of possession um and sitting ever so slightly deeper in order to be able to look for that opportunity to break up play and then and well certainly score goals on the turnover and whether you call that a goal on the counter then yeah ah it's a slightly different style of play from that kind of very heavily possession based looking to to strangle teams.

Encouragement and Focus on Long-term Changes

00:15:09
officialgspn
um Look, obviously a very disappointing game on Sunday, ah but it's my opinion anyway, um and I'd love to hear what you guys think at GSP and Tottenham, but I think PosterKogloo's approach is going to bring around about lasting change. um It's just about people not losing faith, as I say, won five games in a row before this. so broadly speaking, kind of one-way defeat and catastrophic turnaround. Let's face it, to a good team with a good coach and lots of good players um isn't the end of the world. So yeah, you can let us know at GSP in Tottenham. That's it for today. It is the International Break.

Closing Remarks and Future Content

00:15:43
officialgspn
So we've got a bit of a weird higgledy-piggly schedule, but Scott and Christina are going to be back on Thursday um with our first Correspondent Special um answering your questions and having a look at your comments across social media.
