Hello and welcome back to the Global Sports Podcast Network. My name is Scott Duke Giles and you are listening to the Daily Tottenham Podcast and there is listeners, Tottenham fans, there is a pep in my step, there is um a spot a spring in my step and a pep in my voice is probably the best way to put that because at the weekend and the early kickoff on Saturday, early afternoon at 12.30 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Tottenham dispatched I think it encounters a dispatching. Tottenham dispatched West Ham 4-1. For reasons beyond my control, I landed in the North stand for this game. and um which meant and also i but I was kind of in the tier right above the West Ham fans, obviously obviously very much with the my Tottenham brethren.
00:00:58
officialgspn
But um in the tier above the West Ham fans, ah just to decide. So I was pretty near kind of behind the goal. Anyway, it meant that the West Ham fans were directly below me.

West Ham Fan Protests: Balloons and Backlash

00:01:08
officialgspn
And um before the game, interestingly, they set up these balloons, these kind of protest balloons. And I don't know whether this got any coverage on TV, so I might be telling people things that they already know. But um these black balloons said, um on one side of the balloon, it said, stop exploiting loyalty.
00:01:25
officialgspn
And then on the other half of the balloon, other side of the balloon, it said something like, what's the effect of um bring back concessions or like um save our concessions, I think they said. So it's interesting to see that the West Ham fans were mounting a protest similar to the protests seen ah for all taught them last season when it was announced that um ah ah prices for our older fans, 65 plus years plus for plans, um were going to be um kind of concession prices were going to be removed. So it was interesting to see that protest and I was able to glean that from my position because kept the balloons kept floating over above in the tier above and hitting me on the head. Anyway.

Sunny Day Banter: Tottenham Fans' Delight

00:02:08
officialgspn
um but i worked My long-winded story here is that when Tottenham 4 won up, I got to observe one of the finest sites in all of football and that was a very disgruntled and dispassionate and quite empty West Ham away end.
00:02:27
officialgspn
And I got to tell you Tottenham fans, that felt ah ah felt quite nice. And I sat there with the big a great big smug smile on my face. And I also was smug because the sun was shining directly on me in the north stand. And I cleverly brought my Tottenham cap. And so I was able to see everything as clear as they were, as everyone, Vaccario included, needed to wear a cap or had to shield their eyes. And so I felt clever.
00:02:51

Anyway, let's get on to what actually happened in the game rather than to save me ranting on like a madman.

Early Setback: Kudus Scores for West Ham

00:02:56
officialgspn
um It didn't start so well for Tottenham. I actually thought we were quite um quiet in the first knockings, whereas normally, or often, I should say, we kind of um come out in the game and we're rip-drawing, we tend to start quite fast. I never really worry about us starting slowly, as I have done with kind of previous managers and stuff.
00:03:17
officialgspn
um And West Ham looked okay. Kudus had a good chance that was saved by Vicario. um It was straight at him. When I kind of first saw it in the stadium, I thought, oh, that was straight at him. I'm sure it was a routine save. But on further um' watching a match of the day, um I saw that. It was actually quite a good save because Kudus really hit it well. um But then Kudus then scored on in the 18th minute for West Ham, putting them 1-0 up. and um Yeah, I think it was it was it was early on and we hadn't really offered an awful lot. But um I still felt relatively ah kind of positive and confident that we were going to get freedom because I didn't really recognise any of West Ham's back and forth, to be honest. um And um i thought I thought that there might be some vulnerabilities there. And so I guess, you know, the goalkeeper, has never their goalkeeper, Ariola, has never really filled me with confidence.
00:04:15
officialgspn
I suppose that's a good thing because I've rarely talked about West Ham to triumph. um um I suppose more on that later.

Turning the Tide: Kuleszewski's Equalizer

00:04:22
officialgspn
Tottenham started to look a bit better. um and I think Kuleszewski started to get on the little ball a little bit more.
00:04:29
officialgspn
excuse me After West Ham went 1-0 up and um he looked magnificent on Saturday. I think he's been our best player this season. That's not really a hot take, is it guys? And um he started to get on the ball and make things happen and turn away from players really nicely.
00:04:45
officialgspn
ah running with the ball really well and it was he who draws level on the 36th minute um with a shot that um It went in of both posts. So that's always fun to see but I sort of felt that ariola could have done a bit better with that um Yes at halftime is when Papé Saar was introduced to the fray and Madison was taken off. So Madison who sort of kind of set up Kudzewski's goal and it's hadn't had a bad half by any stretch of the imagination that hadn't made any mistakes or anything like that. But he was taking off and Saar was brought on.

Midfield Mastery: Pape Sarr's Impact

00:05:21
officialgspn
And if anyone hasn't seen Match of the Day, I would recommend the analysis ah that um I think it was Alan Shearer did of ah kind of Saar's introduction because it's really, you know, it helps to see it.
00:05:32
officialgspn
as ah Although I love the podcast medium, like I can only convey so much through the the kind of majesty of my words. um ah Nice humble use of the phrase majesty of my words there. But Asaab was able to effectively dart about the pitch and so break the play up and pass the ball really well and he looked just like really strong and he should up the midfield because West Ham are getting um ah a bit of joy but and time on the ball I guess and ah because our midfield was a bit sparsely populated.
00:06:05
officialgspn
in the first half, and I think he plays really well with the suma. I think that they're so confident each other really well, whereas the suma trust him and gives gives him the ball quite a lot. And so I was quite a good. He's a good pass for the ball, and obviously you can run with the ball quite well. And so I think he's he's he's got more to his game than people give him credit for. I think a lot of the time. So it was nice to see him ah kind of, you know, have have his have his moment and people are kind of realizing that he's played quite

Goal Frenzy: Tottenham Dominates

00:06:32
officialgspn
well. But anyway, um the aforementioned Besuma scored in the 52nd minute. um And again, I was a bit perplexed by Ariola's. It was a nice play from Tottenham this goal, Udoghi did fantastically, having sort of been at fault for the first goal, for the for the West Ham goal rather.
00:06:48
officialgspn
um Doggy kind of ran down the line and held the ball up on the touchline and picked out the right pass, which is Pissuma on the edge of the box. And Pissuma kind of side foot in, almost kind of scuffs it. And Areola just completely dives the wrong way. Rather than being like a balanced keeper, he kind of dives the wrong way. I don't know whether Pissuma gave him the eyes or anything like that, but he just completely sort of dived out of the way of it. It was, yeah, I mean, it was that again, that was strange. um There wasn't much Areola could have done. I don't think about the goal that followed.
00:07:19
officialgspn
which was on a 55th minute. And this happens a lot with Tottenham when we just suddenly get on a spell of scoring and we'll score three in 10 minutes. And this has happened there quite a few times under Ange. Anyway, Son breaks through and has a shot that's directly at Arriola. Arriola saves it, but then it comes off, ricochets off.
00:07:38
officialgspn
A West Ham defender bounces back off Ariola, and then it's in the net, dribbles into the net, which is quite a funny home goal moment, which ah led led to more raucous celebrations and ah um in in in my north stand, my new north stand home. And Son was back at it again on the on the hour mark on the sixth in the 60th minute, where he went one-on-one with Ariola, and was able to squeeze the shot under him. And I think this is another one that Ariola would want to have back. I think he got everything behind it, but then not everything behind it. You know what I mean? um And it just like squirmed its way under him, and it went in. And top number four won up. And it could have been 5-1. It probably should have been 5-1, actually, because Son, like one minute after that, because then Son went through and um hit the post. And West Ham, by this point, are just completely in disarray. And that that chance was way easier than the chance that he ended up with that. He scored ah one minute previously.
00:08:35
officialgspn
So, last time we're in complete disarray, the keeper's having a mare. We could have had them 5-1 up, but it doesn't matter because they didn't really offer anything else during the game. Apart from, um or perhaps leading to, Muhammad Qudas losing his head,

Red Card Drama: Kudus Sent Off

rather,
00:08:50
officialgspn
in the 86th minute um and ah he kind of fetched van de Ven down and then tried to like kick the ball out from under him because ah van de Ven kind of fell on the ball um and then it was kind of kicking him and then he only succeeded in really kicking van de Ven's chest and rightfully our big Dutchman got up and he was quite peeved by this and he pushed Kudos who then went to go and who then kind of pushed him in the face with his hands and there's a big melee in shoes in which Richarlison then goes down like a sack of potatoes for no apparent reason, um which is a really magnificent sight to see. And then Akudas then does it again to Pate Sa where he pushes him right in the face and that the one to Sa was more kind of clear cut and more aggressive and he's just kind of thinking what are you doing man? And yeah he was rightfully, initially the referee gave a yellow card to van de Ven and um
00:09:42
officialgspn
and Kudos. But we all sort of everyone around me thought there was going to be more. And we were perplexed as to why it took such a long time. Because if you a few people kind of saw his hand go out into Van de Ven's face initially. We kind of thought, oh, yeah, if he's done that, then that's just a red card. But it seems to take a while for that to come through. If it comes through, it did. And Kudos was sent off a violent conduct in Hill Mystery Games, which is very funny. And um I don't know whether you can be like,
00:10:08
officialgspn
doubly banned for doing the same thing twice, the the same red card offense twice, um but but i doubt I doubt you can. but um yeah He was who was sent off and every and that was funny. Yes, listen, more in the week for more tactical analysis is just a kind of i guess a brief update where I'm just running through the game.

Tactical Triumph: Madison Substitution Success

00:10:29
officialgspn
My initial thoughts are um that we really needed this. I think it would have been quite a downer if we had kind of had ah another uninspiring result following the Brighton game. um And I'm sure Andrew's just thankful for that. And even like the the guys were a few players in the post-match interviews were saying, yeah, like I could have said this, so he said, you know, before the Brighton game, we had won five games in a row and so
00:10:54
officialgspn
and We lost the Brighton game, obviously, in horrendous circumstances, um ah which obviously kind of makes you think that we were in a worse spot than we actually were. and so yeah my But my inkling is that we really needed this to kind of read get rid of some of those narratives. It's also interesting, a lot of people talk about maybe yeah this might be an indication of Ange having a plan B, taking Madison off and having Saar, who's ostensibly more of a defensive um Midfielder, although I actually think his introduction made us more of an attacking threat, even though Madison had a good half and didn't do anything wrong. I just to kind of think shifting the formation like that made us may way more effective going forward.
00:11:36
officialgspn
um Yeah, a lot of folks are saying, oh, maybe this is Ange, maybe lu being a little bit more flexible. Who knows? um It certainly seems that way. um And yeah, I think i think it's i think like listeners at the start of the season will know that I was a big advocate of Saar playing a lot this season. And um i'm I'm glad that he had ah he had a good game. And so he played well again in his previous performances as well this season against in the Europa League I'm thinking of and various other times so yeah happy for Saar, happy for Anj and obviously happy for Tottenham that we managed to get a win over the happy happy hammers so um which is always magnificent.

Looking Ahead: The AZ Alkmaar Preview

00:12:18
officialgspn
Anyway, listen, later on in the week when we'll be back with more tactical analysis, um previews and reviews of the AZ Outmar game, which um is on Thursday night at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. And I'm actually looking forward to quite a lot because I had a good time at the Carabag game um earlier in the season. So, yes. um Listen then, um this has just been a brief update from me, Scott Duke-Giles, and we'll see you later on in the week. Goodbye.
