Spurs Triumph Over Manchester City

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Tottenham Podcast. We're here to break down last night's fantastic Carabao Cup victory over Manchester City. I'm Joe Forrester and last night Spurs ended City's unbeaten start to the season with a hard fought 2-1 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The attendance was a whopping 60,797 to see the lily whites beat the citizens and just shows you what a big occasion it was. and By no means did it disappoint. um So let's have a recap of the

Timo Werner's Goal: A New Beginning?

action. I'm talking about absolutely electric from the off score. Two goals in the first half hour. Timo Werner got his first goal for the club since March and what a way to do it. It was a confident finish at the end of a flowing move in only the fifth minute and you could see the emotion on his face and what I guess is relief. and We've said on this podcast tons of times that Werner gets into fantastic positions. um Be that to to finish a chance off or to
00:01:01

square the ball and if he could only find that final element, that final delivery or that final finish then what a player he could be. um

Performance Analysis: Werner & Sarr

But what do you think? Is it a flash in the pan or does Verner have the full toolkit? Remember you can always get in touch at GSP in Tottenham on all social media. Papsar then doubled the lead with a lovely kind of curling strike into the bottom corner from the edge of the box in the 25th minute and City, who bear in mind haven't lost a game all season, pulled one back just before halftime through Matias Nunez, who actually was given man of the match at the end. He was busy throughout to be honest, constant threat but it wasn't quite enough. ah That goal gave the visitors a glimmer of hope. The second half was a pretty tense end-to-end affair. City had tons more possession, pushed for that equalizer
00:01:44

but Tottenham defended resolutely and looked dangerous on the counter attack a late chance for a charleston went begging misplaced throw in saw him through on goal straight the keeper should have finished it off um and then there's a crucial goal line clearance from eve persuma in the dying minutes nice to see Radu drag us in as well um shaking very relieved looking eve persuma fantastic piece of defending from bis and i think he has been outstanding so far this season certainly since the laughing gas incident, and that in the dying minutes it's secured a memorable victory for Spurs. So let's talk about Teemo.
00:02:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's time to talk about Timo. It's been a tough start to the season for him, of course. Last night felt like it could be a turning point. um Not only a clinical finish, came at a crucial moment early on in the game, set the tone for the entire match. Andrew Postocoglou acknowledged the significance of the goal um for Werner's confidence, saying, great move for the first one and great for Timo to finish as he's been going through a tough time. With the attacking players, it kind of weighs on them when they don't score or don't finish stuff off. For him to score tonight,
00:02:49

and an important moment of the game was great and hopefully that helps him kick on. Vernon himself spoke about the relief of finally finding the net. He said I think it was more not that they were like finally he did it, it was more like relief from them to me and they say we saw he would do it one day and finally I could do it. Yeah the hard work at the end brought the success and I have to continue with that.
00:03:13

make of that what you will. I think what he's saying is he knew that he could always do it and now that the fans have seen it, then hopefully people have a bit more faith in him. I think i think that's what he's

Kuleszewski's Rising Star

00:03:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
saying.
00:03:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Now, obviously with Wilson-Odabe injured as well, Timo Werner has a real chance to solidify a spot in that starting 11. Someone that Ange loves, but kind of with the frequency of mischances, lots of chat about him getting dropped. um But yeah, really kind of justifying his his inclusion. Let's talk about Saar's screamer as well. That's Saar's goal. Where do we begin? um Really been playing well Saar since he yeah as he came on. um couple of weeks ago to kind of ah against AZ to kind of control the game and just ensure Spurs won it. um
00:03:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's adding more to his game, never scored that many goals, but kind of been an all action midfielder like he is, adds goals as well. Work rate's fantastic. Like, yeah, he's playing really, really well. It's a perfectly placed curling effort. ah Left Ortega, absolutely no chance. Kula Sevski with the assist as well. Showed a lovely bit of vision and quick thinking and setting up Saar. Obviously fans out of their seats.
00:04:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
um rapturous applause from the crowd. The stadium was absolutely rocking last night. The question now has got to be, do you think that Papstar should be starting more games? He's shown he has the quality to impact big matches. Should he be in that starting 11 at GSP in Tottenham, if you want to have your say. Let's talk about Dan Kuleszewski. I've got to say, like I don't, I am going to give myself a pat on the back, somewhat prescient. During preseason, I said, I thought Kuleszewski looked fit he looks strong i thought he was playing well and it could be a great season for him and he's been absolutely fantastic that is the classic kind of media thing isn't it like that self-effacing pat on the back i apologize i apologize i thought i was better than that but it turns out i'm not um look kiddie sobsky was outstanding again last night two assists could have easily scored himself brilliant save uh from autega
00:05:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he spoke actually afterwards about his love for the big games. He says, I always love this game, playing the best teams in the world. I want to be one of the best players in the world. Look, he's playing like one of the best in the Premier League, if if not Europe, if not the world at the moment. um Creating chances has been a constant threat, massive handful.
00:05:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
um pace, power, directness, kind of playing in that that number eight, number 10 role, driving through midfield, kind of into those forward areas, creating chances, getting goals. um When called upon playing out wide still, like I i think he's been supposed to play the season, but I genuinely think he is one of the best players in the Premier League, if not Europe at the moment.
00:05:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
um and I would challenge people to name five better players in the Premier League at the moment than day in Kulessevsky. Right, beer before we get on to the next part, just a time to remind you that this podcast is part of the Global Sports Podcast Network, the only network bringing you exclusive daily news and views on your Premier League team, the Premier League, women's football and fantasy football. Tottenham's Defense Strategy

Tottenham showed real grit, determination in defence, particularly after conceding just before half-time. Passuma's last-ditch block to deny O'Reilly a certain equaliser was a moment, ah honestly, just one of those hearts in mouth, but amazing moments, that adrenaline rush afterwards, like I said, Dragison kind of giving him a big whack. um and And the Dragon is a big lad, so I mean, you're going to feel that.
00:06:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Christian Romero as well, real rock at the back before being substituted. One downside ah concern over Mickey Van Der Ven's injury, went off early, he was in tears, looks like another hamstring injury. Nature of the way he plays, I think with all those sprints and that explosive power, he looks like a player who's going to be perennially ah dogged by hamstring problems. so what the club do about that moving forward. I don't really know. um Great to have trackers in there, but obviously it just means we're one Romero injury away from Ben Davis, who's ah left back by trade, having to play at the center half. And suddenly it's always been a problem position for us. Well, not always, but under Angie's tenure, it certainly has. And yeah, we find ourselves looking a little bit, a little bit thin back there as well. So i hopefully Mickey will be back soon. It could be a big b blow for Spurs with a busy schedule ahead.

Guardiola's Tactical Changes

00:07:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
What's talking about Pep Guardiola and um
00:07:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
his kind of approach to the game in the league cup last night. He made several changes to his usual starting lineup. um That being said, you still look at City's lineup and this jam packed with quality, isn't it? um His post-match comments say he wasn't fully focused on the Carabao Cup tie. He said, the plan was not to play today. We have not had much recovery and it was a waste of energy. um but really Not really your choice. that That is the nature of being a professional football club, but nevermind.
00:08:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
um City were missing some key players. Jack Reedish and Karl Walker, for example, and Guardiola admitted his side is currently in a difficult position due to injuries. Sevigno also picked up an injury during the game and had to be stretched off. ah It seems Guardiola's priorities on the Premier League title defence, and he perhaps felt this Cup game was an unnecessary risk. That being said, I mean, Mateus Nunez was on the pitch. um Gardial, Gundogan, serious quality. It takes nothing away from from the Spurs win. Also something that Tottenham really needed after that disappointing away defeat at Palace and it does raise real questions, I think, about Tottenham's away form.

Spurs' Home vs. Away Performance

00:08:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Spurs pretty sparkling at home recently but why can't they win away?
00:08:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Yeah, something we'll be addressing on future pods. But in the meantime, do you have a story to tell that the world needs to hear? um Right now, let's look ahead. Top we've got Manchester United in the Carabao Cup quarterfinals. Obviously, United might be looking at a new manager bounce, whether whether Rue Venister is still at the helm while they look for someone new. Obviously, United went through the 5-2 win over Leicester, so a little bounce for them already. I think a couple of weeks ago, if Tenharg was still at the helm, no disrespect to Eric. It wasn't you. The club's a mess. You might have fancied top of chances. Certainly feels like a tougher game now.
00:09:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
with potentially rejuvenated United, but Tottenham have got to have some confidence from the victory over City and be looking to go all the way in this competition. Pottico, you saw it does have a packed schedule ahead though, several important league matches coming up um and the manager spoke about his team's growth.

Future Prospects for Spurs

00:10:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
He said, I continue to see growth in this group of players and this team, but for me personally, nothing really changes.
00:10:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's about trying to continually push this group to become the team we want to be. We're not there yet, fair to say, but I'm really optimistic and bullish about this group of players. I just think they've got a really high ceiling and we've got to keep focusing on that. Look, Villa coming up at the weekend, Liverpool not too far away, but Spurs through to the Carabao Cup quarterfinal and promised a trophy in his second season. Could this be it? ah You tell me. It's at GSPN Tottenham on all social media. I will also be back tomorrow previewing the Premier League game as Spurs prepare to host Villa on Sunday. In the meantime, happy Halloween and see you next time.
