Introduction to the Podcast and Case Overview
00:00:00
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Hello listeners and welcome. I'm Bridget.
00:00:04
Caroline
And I'm Caroline.
00:00:06
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
You are listening to Hearth, Home and Homicide, a family production about family murders. Caroline and I research and narrate each story. Andy is our producer.
00:00:18
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Caroline and I try to figure out what is going on with the family at the center of the case. And we know the ripple effect of family murder never, ever ends.
00:00:30
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
We see how a killer in the family is responsible for immeasurable destruction and trauma. Listener discretion is advised.
00:00:41
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So Caroline, today's family murder takes place in Ontario, Canada. Ontario, Canada, excuse me. I have to say that this is one of the most despicable family murderers I have ever researched.
00:00:57
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And he murdered the nicest people, the nicest couple on earth. he married he He murdered Carla and Alan Rutherford.
00:01:09
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And the killer's name is Richard Taylor. Now, Richard Taylor is Carla's son from her first marriage.
Richard Taylor's Background and Personality
00:01:20
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And he is a piece of work for sure. And like the killers we cover, Richard has no excuse. He's got no abuse in his family.
00:01:32
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He got nothing but love and support from his family. And, Caroline, you and I were just talking about this. This is a bad person.
00:01:43
Caroline
Right, like born just kind of this way and just didn't seem to get interrupted in any way.
00:01:43
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He's just a bad person.
00:01:47
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He's born bad.
00:01:51
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
No, he did not. He was a compulsive liar. That was like the nice part of it. And a malignant narcissist, ah I'm not diagnosing him. I i don't have the credentials.
00:02:06
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
But based on his behavior, he ticked every box. You know, selfish, self-involved. Self, um you know, feeling like he's entitled to whatever it is he wants.
00:02:18
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Lack of compassion. Always thinking about himself. Antisocial.
The Rutherford Family Dynamics
00:02:25
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
All of those things.
00:02:25
Caroline
Which it's just, it truly is shocking given the nature of this family, because we were just talking about this too, how relatable and wonderful this family seems.
00:02:35
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Oh, yeah, I get this family and I just love them to pieces. And yes, ah yes, it is.
00:02:38
Caroline
And they're blended family. So there there could have been so much strife there, but you don't even get that.
00:02:43
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
No, you don't get that.
00:02:43
Caroline
And so they're just a wonderful family.
00:02:45
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
No.
00:02:45
Caroline
So it is frustrating.
00:02:48
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And they're Canadians, which means that they're nicer than Americans.
00:02:50
Caroline
They are the nicest on the planet with guaranteed.
00:02:54
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I know. I'm just kidding because every every individual in Canada is on the spectrum of something, probably, just like everybody else in America.
00:03:00
Caroline
Yeah, but they're on the nicer spectrum of, yeah, but like of this, but they're on a Canadian spectrum, which is obviously nicer than the other American spectrum we have.
00:03:03
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
i mean, you know
00:03:10
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yeah. Well, you know it when, you know, America does something to them that's harmful to their society and their comeback is, well, please don't do that.
00:03:20
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I thought we were friends.
00:03:22
Caroline
Right. That's not nice. i don't think you should do that to me.
00:03:26
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
No, don't do that.
00:03:26
Caroline
I mean, talk about an emotionally intelligent response.
00:03:27
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
You don't mean that. Right. Anyway, so let's talk about Carla first and her two sons. So Carla Holmes and Richard Taylor...
00:03:40
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
married in 1973 when they were both 19. So they're kids. Richard Scott Taylor was born on February 15th, 1976. then Chris arrived
00:03:54
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
and then chris arrived in June of 1980. So we've got, you know, a loving 19-year-old couple, ah you know, trying to make it.
00:04:07
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And they were two nice people. They got along really well. They had two sons, Richard and Chris. Richard is the oldest and Chris is the youngest.
00:04:18
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And the boys grew up loved. then They knew they were loved. They felt loved. You know, they were loved. Carla was fun-loving and would do anything for her sons.
00:04:31
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Rick enjoyed a party and was proud of his boys. So he was the party animal and she was fun-loving, you know, and she just would do anything for her children.
00:04:43
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So she was a mother, fun-loving mother.
00:04:45
Caroline
Well, now as someone who also grew up literally in the same era and whose parents also got married and similar, similar age, his dad was older, but you were 19, like when you guys met and started your life, but it was fun loving.
00:04:55
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yeah. Yes.
00:05:00
Caroline
And by fun loving, you used to host all the Boy Scout stuff in our backyard.
00:05:03
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
and Oh, yeah.
00:05:04
Caroline
God, that was fun.
00:05:04
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Oh, yeah.
00:05:05
Caroline
Going in the meetings, singing the songs. And you, you and da dad would always invite people over from work for like barbecues and we would clean the house.
00:05:11
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yeah.
00:05:12
Caroline
I'm like, I mean, it just was,
00:05:13
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
We had a good time.
00:05:14
Caroline
It was a good time. So I think anyone growing up in this era in a family in either Canada or the United States, you kind of get what we're saying here.
00:05:17
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yeah.
00:05:25
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. When I read about Rick and Carla being fun-loving and Rick-loving to party, I'm thinking that is so normal at age 19. That is so normal.
00:05:38
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
The fact that they made it through more than a month means to me that they really loved each other a lot.
00:05:44
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And they never stopped loving each other.
00:05:47
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
But in 1981, the Young family moved on to Greening Court in Dundas, which is very near to where they were in Ontario. with ah This neighborhood had eight well-kept, modest homes all facing each other. So imagine like ah a street that doesn't go anywhere.
00:06:09
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And on the street, yeah, yeah, and the and the street... Except that you're not in a cul-de-sac in that there's no houses in that curve. This is just a one-way street where you've got four houses on one side, four houses on the other side, and they are all perfectly matching each other next door.
00:06:29
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I mean, it ah they're all lined up to be ah neighborhood that people just loved being a part of.
00:06:36
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
It's just like a little neighbor cult.
00:06:39
Caroline
Well, and I think that was the start of those. wasn't I mean, I guess the 50s would have been the neighborhood starting in the 60s and stuff. but like in But don't you think that was kind of the boon of like that being the pinnacle of familial success, hitting the burbs, you know?
00:06:51
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Oh, yeah. Oh, for sure. Yeah, yeah. Chris, the youngest son, later, when he was being interviewed...
00:07:03
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He was an adult, well into his adulthood by then. But he said it was like Pleasantville. That's how he created, that's how he described his home of origin.
00:07:13
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
We walked to public school. We walked to the high school. We tobogganed to Grove Cemetery. And the cemetery was right behind this neighborhood.
00:07:25
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yeah, but I mean, you know, it's it's green space.
00:07:27
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
but You know, green space.
00:07:27
Caroline
It's never going to, yeah. will cause you problems.
00:07:30
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He says, we played on the court until all hours of the night. So they had like a tennis court. They had a pool. Everybody had a pool.
00:07:39
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Maybe not everybody, but I take it that, you know, this was normal.
00:07:42
Caroline
Somebody did. Totally.
00:07:44
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And he said, you know, we were up all hours. We probably drove our neighbors crazy. I don't think so, honey, because I think they were all doing the same thing too. Yeah, I mean, you know, this this is a leave it to be neighborhood.
00:07:57
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yeah. The tailors never locked their doors back then. Friends let themselves in whether they were home or not. Sometimes the family would get home to find friends in their house watching TV, waiting for them to get home so they could watch TV together.
00:08:16
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And now that is a close neighborhood. Kids played video games in the basement. Adults had drinks around the pool.
00:08:24
Caroline
Well, there you go.
00:08:24
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Normal, Norman Rockwell on steroids a little bit.
00:08:28
Caroline
ah Yeah, a little bit on the steroids. I don't know about the people in my house when I get there. I'm very homey.
00:08:33
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yeah, yeah. I think that they had like what you might call an insular neighborhood where everybody acted like family.
00:08:40
Caroline
Yeah, which is nice for security. per Honestly, that is nice for security. You feel very secure. You've got a large group of people to go to. I mean, that really, that must be nice. I mean, that would be nice, you know.
00:08:51
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Well, you know, I have a plague and it's been ah plague most of my adult life. And my plague is I'm always thinking about what can go wrong.
00:09:00
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So I'm always thinking about, well, now, do I know the background of this individual? Do I know that they wash their hands when they are in the bathroom? I mean, you know.
00:09:09
Caroline
I remember you used to like, when we would take the dogs on walks, you, I think we were giving you panic attacks because you're like, if it bites another kid in this neighborhood, I'm toast.
00:09:10
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
ah you know
00:09:19
Caroline
We're going to lose our home. You were just so concerned someone was going to sue you for one of your dogs biting their kids or something. You know, that's true.
00:09:26
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I'm always concerned about, you know, some mishap lurking that I would pull the trigger on.
00:09:31
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So, I mean, I'm more reserved. I'm more conservative with my own space.
00:09:37
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Who do I invite into my life? I'm very, very particular about who I let into my life.
00:09:43
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So I would not do well on this street. I would be the curmudgeon woman who wanted to see, you know, have you had all of your inoculations?
00:09:52
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Right.
00:09:53
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I just, it just wouldn't work for me. But it's, ah as I say, it's it's a blessing and a plague.
00:09:59
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I'll say plague.
00:10:00
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Anyway, this house was a true home. The neighborhood was a home to all. Chris and Rich played sports together, the brothers, especially baseball.
00:10:14
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Rich was a star player at Parkside High School and was named Male Athlete of the Year 1994, 1995. and ninety ninety four nineteen ninety five He went on to play for the Dundas Chiefs.
00:10:26
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
That's a ah Bush League, I guess, baseball team. Carla didn't love sports, but she gladly sat through the years of her son's games.
00:10:37
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
They both played
Richard's Achievements and Downfall
00:10:39
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
baseball, so she was going out to games all the time.
00:10:41
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yeah.
00:10:42
Caroline
She's fighting a good fight there.
00:10:43
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yeah.
00:10:44
Caroline
Baseball's not exactly always thrilling.
00:10:47
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
no that's No, you want to watch something funny is Andy ah on a baseball field. Andy in the outfield. Because in the outfield, you've still got bugs walking around on the grass. You've still got butterflies coming and landing places.
00:11:05
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And he would just be so mesmerized by the wildlife around him um that I don't know, I heard his name shouted out an awful lot when he was playing.
00:11:16
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
But he was, you know, he showed up.
00:11:18
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He showed up.
00:11:19
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Every now and then he hit that ball.
00:11:22
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And um anyway, Chris says of his brother, we had a really good relationship. We were close.
00:11:34
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
We grew up in a very normal household. So that is his viewpoint.
00:11:41
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I could not find a single written word anywhere.
00:11:47
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
ah Newspapers.com, where, you know, you go into the newspapers from all over the world for 200 years. You can read everything. I could not find one word that he ever said bad about his family.
00:12:03
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So, I mean, you know, he didn't ever say that his family was no good or they are treating me wrong or I feel jealous. Why are you being treated like number one son?
00:12:14
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Because in fact, he was the number one son.
00:12:14
Caroline
or Or even just any kind of like, oh, got in trouble with, so you know, because a lot of times kids will get in trouble in high school and their parents kind of bail them out, whatever that looks like.
00:12:25
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yeah. Yeah.
00:12:25
Caroline
and And, you know, people know about it. It's a murmur if you dig deep ah a layer or two. But when you're pulling back all the layers here, none of that is really present at all.
00:12:34
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
No, no.
00:12:35
Caroline
It's a very quintessential loving family.
00:12:35
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Here's what Chris had to say. He said, we were not kids that were out late getting into trouble. We were pretty straight-laced, well-behaved kids. That was the expectation. And he said, if you screwed up, you're going to hear about it from not just dad, but mom.
00:12:54
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He said, mom had no problem chewing on your ear a little bit too.
00:12:58
Caroline
Oh, I love that. Chewing on the ear.
00:12:59
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yes, chewing on the ear.
00:13:00
Caroline
That's what I do. I'll actually bite your head off.
00:13:02
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So she's not going to, nobody hit anybody.
00:13:03
Caroline
Sorry about that.
00:13:04
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Nobody, nobody starved anybody.
00:13:07
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Nobody kicked anybody out of the house.
00:13:10
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
It just was a nice home. Rich was a busy, social, athletic kid. Now remember, he's the one that's going to grow up to murder his parents. There were no hints whatsoever that he would become a liar.
00:13:24
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He would become a thief. He would become a fraud artist and he would become a killer.
00:13:34
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Their parents divorced amicably when the boys were in high school. I think 19-year-olds lasting 20-some years is amazing.
00:13:45
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
It really is. It doesn't sound like their divorce was filled with anything but mutual care for their family. it was ah It was a good, they just wanted to divorce because they probably grew in different directions and didn't have as much in common as they did at the beginning.
00:14:00
Caroline
Yeah. Right. Yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:14:05
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And it probably took a long time to get to the place where they were willing to make it real.
00:14:12
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And they probably talked everything out civilly. And it was a difficult transition. And this is Chris now talking about, many years later.
00:14:23
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
But with time, he and his brother adjusted and they main and their parents maintained an amicable relationship. There was never any, your father is this, your mother is this, none of that, none of that.
00:14:32
Caroline
Right. That's Nice.
00:14:37
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So Carla and the boys stayed in the house on greening court. So they got to stay in their neighborhoods. They got to stay in the home that they grew up in.
00:14:50
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Eventually, rick ah remarried, and Carla fell in love with Alan Rutherford. her colleague in the laboratory at McMaster University Medical Center, where they both were medical technologists.
00:15:08
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So they married on May 25th, 2007. two thousand and seven And it wasn't a fling at all. They knew each other for a very long
The Crime and Its Aftermath
00:15:19
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
time and even dated for a very long time before tying the knot.
00:15:24
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
They weren't in a hurry to get remarried. They were, you know, they just weren't in a hurry.
00:15:27
Caroline
Yeah. She's still raising kids and in her boys lives and that's all still mean you know.
00:15:33
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Oh, yeah. Yeah. Chris and Rich went to, rich you know, Richard Taylor, who we're talking about as the killer, and his brother Chris, went to McMaster University playing varsity baseball.
00:15:46
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
That's pretty cool.
00:15:48
Caroline
That is cool. Oh, That's
00:15:48
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
In 1997, Rick's achievements at McMaster University especially were outstanding, right? The games he played helped earn ah Mac, which is what they called the college, McMaster College, the first national baseball championship.
00:16:08
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And soon after that, he became the team's coach.
00:16:14
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So meanwhile, in 1998, Richard got his Bachelor of Arts, then worked a few jobs before going Medalli College. I'm screwing that up. I'm sorry.
00:16:28
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
In Buffalo, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education. After graduating, he moved back to Grinning Court with Carla and Alan.
00:16:40
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He registered with the Ontario College of Teachers on September 27, 2002, and he took a job with the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board.
00:16:54
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So what a success story for Carla and her ex-husband, Rick. And they really celebrated their sons and they really loved the way that they had grown into responsible adults.
00:17:11
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And then came the best thing of all, grandchildren. So both of them had grandchildren or they got grandchildren from both sons. When Chris's twins were born premature, Carla dropped everything in her life to help that family.
00:17:30
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
When Rich's kids unexpectedly needed picking up from daycare, That's a nice way of putting, Rich was letting her do the hauling of the grandkids from daycare.
00:17:43
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
She drove from Dundas to Oakville to get them. So she did not live, you know, next door or anything like that.
00:17:50
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
She she had to stop what she was doing and she did.
00:17:54
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
She did. That's what she did for her.
00:17:55
Caroline
you You've talked about loving that that feeling before. I'm sure you love it once in a while when it's like genuine but not piled on.
00:18:04
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
It was fun for me to take ah several of my grandchildren when when the first load, I have seven, you know, but the but there it was fun.
00:18:16
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
It was fun to do pickup and, you know, being a grandmother was new-ish.
00:18:25
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I loved it that everybody called me Nana and they didn't.
00:18:29
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
say that's my grandma because I didn't ever tell them don't call me a grandmother and it wasn't that I didn't want to be a grandmother it's just that when my mother became a grandmother she wanted to be called Nana and she want she just that stuck with me and I was in my teens when that first happened and so you know I just thought oh I like that
00:18:54
Caroline
Amanda's cool. Yeah.
00:18:56
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Nana's cool. My friend, her grandson calls her Gigi, which I think is French.
00:19:03
Caroline
I like that one. Yeah, I've heard that a lot too lately. And I like that one, Gigi, ah Gija. And like, there's all these cute things. So I think that there's, this is like the third tier level of a life when this is the life path you choose.
00:19:20
Caroline
And it's so sweet. Like you said, I love that you said like ah Rick and Carla celebrate their achievement of their sons because that's true.
00:19:28
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yes.
00:19:29
Caroline
You kind of are, as a parent, you just want to see them leave the nest, which really means find a way to sustain themselves emotionally, financially, socially.
00:19:36
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Sure.
00:19:39
Caroline
Like you want them to have all of the pillars of a good life.
00:19:41
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
you You want them to become decent people and contributors.
00:19:45
Caroline
Yeah. And contributors. and And then when they have these grandbabies, you get, that's like your, this this coup de grace for you.
00:19:48
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Independent.
00:19:54
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yes, so yeah yeah absolutely.
00:19:55
Caroline
It's like your trophy.
00:19:57
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Absolutely. You get to love on these children and you don't see any of the misbehavior and you know...
00:20:04
Caroline
Totally. And they don't see any authoritarianism out of you. So you can kind of infiltrate. It's quite nice, really.
00:20:14
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So Carla was really in her element. She sewed Halloween costumes for all the grandchildren. Now, Carla was ah primo seamstress. She had a talent.
00:20:26
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
ah And we'll get into that in a minute. But Carla was a doting grandmother and a fun person to be around. She's still a fun person.
00:20:36
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
She likes to do things that are just light and fun and the essence of a life well lived.
00:20:48
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So let's talk about her new husband, Alan Rutherford. Lloyd Alan Rutherford had a proper mount mustache all of his adult life.
00:21:00
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He was known for it and that's why it keeps, I mean, it was in every article I read. He grew up on a dairy farm in Toronto, grew his mustache in university, and then he was never without it.
00:21:14
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So he this is a man who is claiming his identity as he goes along. Alan cared about the environment so much, and everybody knew it.
00:21:26
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I mean, he made no secret about it. He
Trial, Conviction, and Family Impact
00:21:29
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
didn't shame anybody about it. Well, maybe that's a little, maybe he did a little bit because he biked to work.
00:21:34
Caroline
at least he wasn't trying to I'm sure
00:21:36
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yes. He always biked to work ah before he retired and kept on biking to wherever he wanted to be.
00:21:46
Caroline
yeah that's fine
00:21:47
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He skied, put on his s skied and skied to work when he couldn't bike.
00:21:52
Caroline
I think that's really fun. And it might even be quintessential Canadian. I don't know. But I know that places out there where they get snow every year and for long periods of time, they do kind of have these alternative modes.
00:22:01
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yes.
00:22:04
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Remember when we lived in Idaho and and we had to put on our skis to go down the street?
00:22:08
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
That was fun.
00:22:09
Caroline
Yes. You could sink down to your waist. If you stood on the snow, you could walk up.
00:22:12
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Oh, yeah.
00:22:13
Caroline
But then if you jumped, you'd like sink down.
00:22:15
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Right, and you know, if I'm sinking, there's not much, you know, to me. there's an I'm five feet now. I used to be five two so I was lording over everyone at five two and
00:22:28
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Now I'm the shortest one in the family, including my grandchildren.
00:22:32
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He was always reminding people to shut their idling engines off.
00:22:39
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Okay. Okay. Now that can be annoying to me, but I do need to be reminded to do that.
00:22:47
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So thank you, Alan. Of course, now I'm driving a car that shuts itself off.
00:22:51
Caroline
Yeah, they all do it now.
00:22:51
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
when you stop and I kind of like that I feel a little bit more environmentally aware he fixed bikes for all the kids on that street where they lived and you know your dad used to do that so now I love Alan
00:23:10
Caroline
Yeah. I mean, in the 80s and the 90s, the bikes were about all you had if you didn't have a driver's license. That was it.
00:23:16
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:23:20
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Bikes are fun to repair, according to your dad, and he used to ah work ah at the transfer station,
00:23:32
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
where people would throw perfectly good bikes into the pit and he would jump down into the pit to get the bike, bring it out, take it home, fix it and give it to mostly ah friends of you guys who were living on a commune where we lived.
00:23:51
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And everybody on that commune had a bike.
00:23:51
Caroline
He loved that job, think. Oh, yeah. And I think he loved that job because he just, I think it gave him confirmation on his thoughts about people generally.
00:24:03
Caroline
But also, like, he just got so much free stuff. He would go, we got golf club sets.
00:24:07
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I know, he wasn't supposed to be jumping down into that pit, number one. You know, your your father, as you know, used to not follow all the rules.
00:24:17
Caroline
Some of the rules should be a little bit flexible. I mean, you know, because the outcomes are beneficial to us all.
00:24:25
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Well, anyway, let's go back to Alan.
00:24:31
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
ah Alan took care of the neighborhood, and by taking care, I mean he mowed everybody's lawn. Because he just really loved to mow lawns.
00:24:40
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And you know he was not using gas gasoline. You know he wasn't.
00:24:44
Caroline
probably those pushers with no motor.
00:24:45
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Rotary.
00:24:46
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
A rotary. Yeah. he was
00:24:49
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He had a plow, a snow plow. And he would he would plow the entire court.
00:24:55
Caroline
yeah that i love I love a neighbor like that. don't
00:24:58
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Oh, yeah. I have to pay somebody to do stuff like that.
00:25:03
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Now, I would be a little weirded out by someone mowing my lawn and plowing snow for me, but that's just because I'm in America and I'm me I think Canada might be used to commingling with neighbors and taking care of each other a little bit better than what I ever experienced.
00:25:21
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And again, I'm a little standoffish. I'm a little like, how do I know that you're not going to get injured or claim you're injured and then sue me?
00:25:28
Caroline
That part. I think it's the litigious nature of America through the 80s and 90s that causes us all now to go like, I want to be nice to you, but I just, the risk is really high.
00:25:29
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
that I'm always thinking like that.
00:25:39
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Or, and there, what you know, what I think is amazing is there was never any distrust.
00:25:40
Caroline
Financially, couldn't take the hit.
00:25:45
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Like, why do you want to what do you want from me?
00:25:48
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Why do you want, but no.
00:25:49
Caroline
Why did you say that you liked my whatever?
00:25:52
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yeah.
00:25:54
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yeah.
Reflection on Betrayal and Legacy
00:25:56
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
But, you know, there are neighborhoods that actually have people who enjoy mowing and they want to mow, so mow away.
00:25:56
Caroline
We're suffering with PTSD right now.
00:26:03
Caroline
I know. Well, and it's in everyone's best interest that your neighbors are taken care of. Again, it goes back to that kind of thing where it's like that part of sort of spirituality, that community connection that you want to look for, part that I do think that there's truth there.
00:26:16
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yes.
00:26:19
Caroline
If I can take care of you, someone's going to take care of me.
00:26:20
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Oh, yeah.
00:26:22
Caroline
And then look, we're all taken care of.
00:26:24
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Right, right. I don't think Alan ever thought he was going to ever need to be taken care of because he was so super fit.
00:26:32
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
The grandchildren called him Papa Al, and his daughters called him Mr. Safety. ah He had two daughters from a previous marriage.
00:26:45
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He would kick the tire, the car tires before he drove. He gave them CAA memberships every year. These are his daughters. That's the AAA here, AAA.
00:26:59
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I wonder if they call it CAA in Canada.
00:27:01
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I don't know. But so Al and Carla loved, loved decorating for Christmas.
00:27:02
Caroline
um maybe. Yeah. That's funny.
00:27:09
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
was big deal, big deal to them. If you didn't have six strands of light, on the tree. You were not doing it right, said his daughter Amelia. He had two girls from his first marriage.
00:27:21
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
There is no decoration left behind, she would say after his death, that he was just, they just were a people of ah abundance when it came to their family, holidays, having fun, sports, reaching out to others,
00:27:41
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I mean, they really are nice people. Al and Carla took dance lessons together, and then they would show off their moves at parties.
00:27:50
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And Al danced with both his daughters, Amelia and Allison, at their weddings.
00:27:55
Caroline
Oh, sweet. That's super cute.
00:27:56
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I know.
00:27:57
Caroline
What a fun dude.
00:27:58
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yeah. And he was a big, tall guy, you know, strong.
00:28:01
Caroline
With a mustache.
00:28:02
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And, you know, he didn't let that stop him.
00:28:03
Caroline
That's so cute. you
00:28:06
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He gave blood more than 100 times. He was a computer geek. He helped restore the jet mounted in front of the Hamilton Air Force Association in Dundas.
00:28:17
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He biked with the Halton Outdoor Club and kayaked with Allison.
00:28:23
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So, I mean, this is this is an unusually fit and always active environmentalist loving family man.
00:28:34
Caroline
Yeah. this This sounds like a cool dude.
00:28:40
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So Amelia said to an interviewer, the whole thing was just pretty special. And she just would start crying after his death because it's just you, you know, out on the Lloyd Allen Rutherford.
00:28:56
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Um, Tripp, I mean, you know, you he grew up on a dairy farm in Fisherville, grew his mustache in university, and was never without it.
00:29:08
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And she would just name off all the things that distinguished him from everybody else. So if you knew Lloyd Allen Rutherford... You knew a lot. You knew this person that had a lot of ah features and habits that were so cherished after his death, as well as when he was still alive. He cared about the environment, environment as I said. He biked to work before he retired or skied there.
00:29:37
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He asked drivers to shut their ah their ah idling engines, fixed all these bikes. We're talking about the perfect man here.
00:29:45
Caroline
We really are. I mean, it's almost like too good to be true. But there are people like this. They're mostly in the Northwest or Canada, but they are just nice people inhabiting the planet, wanting to just bring a nicer version everywhere they go, you know, improve, help.
00:30:04
Caroline
You know, not even improve. It's not even a progress improving thing. They just want to bring help, relieve burdens, provide joy and positivity. That's Alan. And he just loved the earth, you know.
00:30:16
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yes, extraordinarily fit, rarely sitting still, triathlete. He did the Around the Bay Road Race multiple times and the Boston Marathon.
00:30:28
Caroline
now that's a big one.
00:30:28
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
When he was 52, he was still running in the Boston Marathon, and including um that year that he turned 52. It rained like monsoon, and he he ran the Marathon.
00:30:41
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Marathon. um When you hugged him, everybody says it was warm and solid. And his hands were rough, his mustache tickled, and he had gaps in his teeth.
00:30:53
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Oh, my God. He was a real person. um These children, these daughters when he died, and this, you know, everybody in the community was just crushed. Just crushed.
00:31:06
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Just crushed. Carla and Alan were known throughout the neighborhood ah for walking their chocolate labs.
00:31:19
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
The Rutherfords often recognized their neighbors recognized them from their travels, and um they organized trips to different cities based on what marathon Alan was going to be running, and some of the neighbors would go just to see them run.
00:31:42
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
ah In 2016, Carla retired, and a year later, so did Alan. Now, remember, they worked together for years and years in the medical tech law technology field.
00:31:54
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
It was their time to travel, pursue their hobbies, dote on the grandchildren. They had built such a good life together. And then came the horrendous end of it all. Isn't that horrible?
00:32:08
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Just horrible.
00:32:09
Caroline
One more thing I do want to say about Alan, because the triathlon thing, when you said that they make their travels around, there you know, a lot of people do that. There's a lot of quirks about people generally. Like a lot of people love Disneyland. They want to get married there and have every life event there. They're Disney people. Then you've got these athlete people who are not athletes in their day to day, but they train for marathons throughout the year.
00:32:09
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Horrible.
00:32:33
Caroline
They love doing them. They love picking them. They have goals. I just find that so interesting. And when you said like never stops moving, he's doing all these other things and he's doing these. I just wonder if that's a studyable trait in the personality or the DNA.
00:32:49
Caroline
Like how does one get that motivated and sort of like driven? i get a little jealous as well. Yeah.
00:32:58
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Well, certainly I'm no athlete. I'm not the athletic type. I don't have that chip in my brain and ah I certainly don't have the body for athletic um prowess.
00:33:11
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
ah So because I do not have that, I'm going to say, well, of course he had that.
00:33:17
Caroline
Oh, okay. So like, that's what drove him to want to, I just feel like it's some kind of like,
00:33:20
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Right. I know that that's missing in me.
00:33:25
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So therefore, I'm assuming it is in an abundance with a guy like this.
00:33:30
Caroline
Right. And I think it's a trait. Like, you know how some people think cilantro tastes like soap and other people love cilantro or whatever. their their mark They can identify these as like sort of like genetic markers, sort of like lean one way or the other.
00:33:40
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I do think that there' it's genetic. I do. i do.
00:33:43
Caroline
I do too. I just think there's a person, it's not even just personality. I think there's something in you.
00:33:47
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
You're either born that way. I don't see how you could be an athlete. Well, okay, going to speak for myself a non-athlete. I broke my legs, my ankles, my wrists so many times trying to be athletic.
00:33:56
Caroline
Yeah. Yeah. You're right.
00:34:00
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I mean, i am a klutz. Let's face it, it's not good.
00:34:04
Caroline
but calling. like It's not like you're saying that like it's wrong. It wasn't for you.
00:34:10
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
No, I mean, it's not like I tried it, didn't try it, you know.
00:34:15
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So there are people who are built, athletically built, and they're able to do these things without tying their bones in a knot.
00:34:24
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I am not one of those people. I remember skating nearly killed me. running The bicycle nearly killed me. um
00:34:33
Caroline
Oh my god, you're alive!
00:34:33
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
and But i I wanted to skate and I wanted to bicycle, so I did. And so I broke parts of my body on a regular basis.
00:34:42
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So let's talk about the murder.
00:34:46
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Sunday, July 8th, 2018. that So to me, this is just yesterday.
00:34:52
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
this is like just just yesterday.
00:34:56
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
It's Sunday. The pool at Alan and Carla's house had grandkids in it all day, splashing and giggling and goofing around. Alan and Carla were very loved and important to the yacht club also, which did a lot of good in the community and helped boaters and families out a lot.
00:35:16
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So earlier in that weekend, Al, who was 63, helped with a regatta at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club, that was running a race and bike. He ran the race and he also biked 76 kilometers just for fun.
00:35:34
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Now, I don't know how much a kilometer is, but I know that whatever it is, I cannot race and bike 76 of them.
00:35:41
Caroline
um not at sixty three and
00:35:43
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
But he did.
00:35:45
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So they're having a beautiful Sunday with the grandkids, their children, their community, their yacht club, all of these things. The Rutherfords were very well known for air for every and all fundraisers, including donating quilts Carla had made to be auctioned off for a fortune.
00:36:04
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Now, Caroline and our listeners, there quilting can be quite lucrative.
00:36:11
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
When you are able to make a picture, ah collage, or just if you're able to do the magical things that some people do with quilts and have it turn out to be actually the measurement that you wanted it to turn out.
00:36:27
Caroline
my God, it looks all finished and like.
00:36:28
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Because I've tried making quilts. I'm not that either. So, I mean, you know, ah I love quilts.
00:36:33
Caroline
I like your quilts though. I've made many of your quilts. But I know there's a real art to this and some people are very, it is, it's a scene.
00:36:37
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Listen, I love quilts.
00:36:42
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
She had it. Carla had it.
00:36:43
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
she Carla, remember, she's making costumes for every one of her grandchildren every single year. and I'm sure she did it for her children as well. And, um you know, she makes these quilts and auctions them off for thousands of dollars to raise money in the community.
00:37:02
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So they were having a day. It's July 8th, 2018. That's their day. They were doing various things that day, and when bedtime came, they were both tired, and they were tired for all the right reasons.
00:37:17
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
They rolled into bed together later in the evening. Carla had just spent time in the garden that Al intended, mostly roses. Jeez, this guy is too good.
00:37:28
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Anyway, ah he he bought gardens, and she sits in the garden and soaks it up.
00:37:36
Caroline
I want to make a rose garden, but geez, you're right.
00:37:38
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yeah.
00:37:39
Caroline
This is just like the cherry on the perfect family sundae here.
00:37:42
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Oh, it is. And you get to stroll through it and you get to pick the little aphids off. And now gardening is my thing.
00:37:50
Caroline
That's your jam, yeah. That's, yeah.
00:37:51
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I may not be athletic.
00:37:54
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I may not be terrific at sewing. I do sew. But, you know.
00:37:59
Caroline
good at sewing but you have your conversations with planet earth are quite magnificent
00:38:05
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Thank you so much. That is my thing. i am like Mother Earth. um So anyway, the last thing Carla did before getting into bed was send Rich, her son, $500.
00:38:18
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
five hundred dollars um They fell asleep, the two of them, Carla and Alan did. They fell asleep worried about him and talking a little about their his financial problems, which were continuous problems.
00:38:35
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And this was the last night of cuddle talk that they would ever have. ah Because a little after 3 a.m., Richard Taylor...
00:38:48
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Their son Rich, her son Rich, stepfather of the year. i mean, he had everything. So what he did was he took his own key to their house. He let himself in with his key. He took a container of pet some kind of petrol, inflammatory, and slowly poured it out around the metal spring bed his mother and stepfather were sleeping in, and he lit the match.
00:39:17
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And then he locked. the door behind him.
00:39:22
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So this is a man who is going to burn his parents, his mother and stepfather at the stake.
00:39:34
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Why? Because he's mad at them? No, he did it for money. But there's more. Alan is the hero of this story.
00:39:45
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Just after 4 a.m., the Rutherford's neighbor, Karen Monk, was awakened to banging on her front door. She opened it and saw a naked man. She did not recognize him as Alan Rutherford.
00:40:01
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
because he was burned over 80% of his body, and he was bleeding out, and he had had to jump out of his bedroom window just to get out of the inferno that was his bedroom. he His neighbor, Karen Monk, she did not recognize him until he said, it's me, Alan, and Carla is still in the house. It's on fire.
00:40:29
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He had tried to save her, but he could not save her. He found one dog, got him out, could not find the other dog. You know, ordinarily he would be able to pick up his wife and tote her around for days, but he couldn't because of his own 85% burn over his body.
00:40:48
Caroline
Well, I was just going say, this is a dead man walking around trying to rescue people from a burning building. I mean, this is crazy.
00:40:54
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yes, he's a dead man walking. Karen and her husband called 9-11. Firefighters and police were dispatched, and they arrived immediately. The fire was so intense that it was probably, obviously, or they knew that it was aided by some kind of an accelerant.
00:41:13
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So this is arson.
00:41:15
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Karen told Alan she hoped they'd find who did this, and Alan told her, i know who did it. It was Richard, my stepson. He did it. He did it. He did it.
00:41:27
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Carla was found in a bed burned down to the Metal Springs. She was declared but dead on the scene. Alan was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where they rendered him, you know, through medication to be comatose by doctors in an effort to, you know, you could say that it was an effort to save him, but I think it was an effort to keep him out of pain.
00:41:51
Caroline
Palliative. It's palliative. 80%.
00:41:53
Caroline
I think there's probably threshold where you can't survive.
00:41:53
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yeah, palliative care. Very, very well said. yes
00:41:58
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
His children were called and both his daughters, of course, arrived and they were in absolute agony, just screaming, I can't hug him. I can't say goodbye.
00:42:10
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I just want my daddy.
00:42:13
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Alan Rutherford died later that day. He had a hero's heart and was so strong that he told more than seven people that night. or that morning now, that it was his stepson, Richard, who set this fire to kill them in order to gain financially from their estate.
00:42:31
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He just said it like, you know, ah ah loudspeaker.
00:42:35
Caroline
because they had just been talking about it. They sent him $500. So obviously there's financial discussions going on. So he knows immediately.
00:42:41
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Oh, yeah. And they knew who he was. They certainly did not know what he was capable of, but they knew who he had been up to this point. And I mean, you know,
00:42:52
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Richard Taylor was arrested, tried and convicted of premeditated murder.
00:43:00
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
The entire city of Ontario and surrounding areas in Canada mourned the deaths of these beloved people who all they ever did was help other people and live life to the fullest.
00:43:15
Caroline
Well, I won certainly want to know them. They were a family I would have wanted to hang out with and play with and go to their house and raid their kitchen and all the things you did back in the day.
00:43:25
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
All the things. All the things. ah Here's what was revealed at trial. Richard, the killer, Richard had gone to college and he went on to advance his studies so that he could become a teacher.
00:43:42
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
When he got to his first school, you know, he's teaching, teaching. He was suspected of stealing money from the school and others as well as others working at the school.
00:43:53
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And, you know, they were constantly telling him, Richard, we know that you're stealing this money. We know.
00:43:58
Caroline
What money is there to steal at a school? Whose ticket? Is it like the lunch money? I mean, you don't have a ton of on-hand cash, do you?
00:44:05
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Oh, yeah. You've got hand cash because, number one, you've got people buying the books at the book fair. You've got people who are buying um the materials for their class.
00:44:19
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And ah perhaps in that school, the teacher could have brought a receipt and gotten cash.
00:44:22
Caroline
The ASB fees. Yeah.
00:44:25
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
You know, the the yearbook when they take the money for the yearbook.
00:44:26
Caroline
Okay. That makes Right.
00:44:29
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So there's always something. There's a skate club. Somebody wants to buy some skates, you know. And he was pilfering from these probably not well locked up.
00:44:41
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
You know, they didn't think that they worked in a bank vault for crying out loud. He was and, you know, he he transferred to another school because he knew that he everybody knew.
00:44:54
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
he knew that people knew everybody knew he knew he that it was just horribly awkward.
00:44:59
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And, of course, it's Canada. Nobody's going say, you filthy thief. Get out of here. were You're fired.
00:45:04
Caroline
Would they? I mean, I feel like they would a little bit. They do the elbows thing.
00:45:07
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I don't know.
00:45:08
Caroline
I don't know. I want to know more, Canada. Yeah.
00:45:10
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yes, well, his previous, he transferred to another school, Carolee. But his previous school, guess what happened?
00:45:17
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
No more missing money in their school.
00:45:19
Caroline
I mean, to me, that's enough. I recognize there are courts and thresholds and things, but like a jury appears, whatever. But like, that's enough for me. and Unless some other person was there and then left.
00:45:32
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
No, nobody else. His new school started missing money.
00:45:38
Caroline
Okay, even more.
00:45:39
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He told them that he had pancreatic cancer.
00:45:43
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Now, that seems like the non-secular of America, or Canada, but I'm just trying to say he kept on with his stealing, but he added a new layer
00:45:56
Caroline
Like, well, it's almost like a deflective layer. Get away from me. Like the C word, you know, like go away.
00:46:00
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I'm going to immunize myself. Why would he pick pancreatic cancer when you cannot survive pancreatic cancer and your life expectancy after diagnosis is about 20 minutes?
00:46:13
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
How can you, why did you pick that cancer?
00:46:16
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
That is such an obvious lie.
00:46:21
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He was somebody who in his life with his wife, ah he would run up credit cards and not pay them off. And he'd get a new credit card and not pay it off.
00:46:33
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He and his wife had these habits. One of them was to, when they were first married, they would eat every meal out. Nobody bothered to cook anything.
00:46:44
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Nobody wanted to cook anything. Their favorite restaurant became Tim Hortons. So by the time they had children, everybody was eating three meals a day at Tim Hortons.
00:46:55
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Now, Tim Hortons is like an olive garden or something, you know, like a one of that level...
00:46:55
Caroline
really like apple beans yeah i drink their coffee i do use their coffee because it's my favorite um
00:47:01
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
But very, very popular in Canada.
00:47:07
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Where do you buy Tim Horton coffee?
00:47:10
Caroline
I'm from Brazil, as Scott would say. Because I don't want to support the company, but I totally do. But that's where I get it from.
00:47:21
Caroline
And I like it. It tastes the best.
00:47:23
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
What store do you buy it from? need to see this coffee.
00:47:26
Caroline
I could just get it on Amazon. I can get a subscription to it.
00:47:29
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Oh, okay.
00:47:30
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Okay.
00:47:30
Caroline
But I purchased it in small bags, and then now I finally bought it in.
00:47:31
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yeah. I think it's because you're part Canadian. You think you are because you are nice like Canadians.
00:47:38
Caroline
used to say when I went to France he was like you know we're French can Canadian definitely he used to say I know we got something back there that's that was cute
00:47:47
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Oh, that's so cute. He made up, he he, Richard, he would make up bank statements to show his wife regarding how much money there was in the bank accounts.
00:47:57
Caroline
oh no oh no oh no no no yeah I mean and that's not
00:47:57
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So she, you know, I don't know anything about her, but this part here, I'm thinking, lady, what is your problem? You need to know what is in the bank account, even if he's the one handling the money.
00:48:13
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I always handled the money in our family, and Ted always knew that, you know, we were paying our bills.
00:48:19
Caroline
Right. Right. he I think he liked that you did it because he knew not only were you getting the bills paid you were putting stuff aside for other fun things.
00:48:21
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I mean...
00:48:25
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Oh, he would tell he told me when I met him, he said, don't let me handle any money because I will spend it. and when it's gone, it's gone. That's it.
00:48:33
Caroline
That's where I get it from. Now I know. Thanks a lot.
00:48:38
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
His idea of a savings account is you put your money, when you get it from your job, you put your money in a sock in your drawer and you go to the sock.
00:48:47
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
If you want more money to go buy something and when the sock is empty, you know, you better get a second job.
00:48:52
Caroline
You don't have it, you don't get to buy it.
00:48:53
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
That was his idea.
00:48:54
Caroline
Yeah, I think he, you know, I think he has some depression era influences early in his life.
00:48:59
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Uh-huh, yeah, yeah. So they're eating at Tim Hortons, his family, and taylor Richard Taylor's family.
00:49:09
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He's lying to everyone in his life. he He's just a liar.
00:49:13
Caroline
This is trouble.
00:49:13
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He's just a, it's almost like, remember we were talking about Alan and how he had the athletic, everything, and he was just athletic and helpful.
00:49:22
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He just had those genes.
00:49:24
Caroline
Just like a reflex.
00:49:24
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He happened to get
00:49:26
Caroline
Yeah. It's like a...
00:49:26
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yeah, he's got a trifecta. He's got athleticism. He's got her gardening for his wife and loves her to bits.
00:49:33
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
They were married for 10 years before they were killed by Richard Taylor.
00:49:38
Caroline
I probably would have been married for another 25.
00:49:39
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And, you know, he had those.
00:49:41
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Well, what did Richard get? He got the lying gene and he got the extravagant scenarios.
00:49:52
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I have pancreatic cancer and That way nobody, i guess he was trying to immunize himself against being caught for stealing because he was stealing all the time.
00:50:03
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Oh, anyway, what happened here was that we've got a wife who's oblivious to how much money is in the account because she's taking at face value these fake bank statements.
00:50:19
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
It was when he and his wife, richard Richard and his wife, were going on vacation with his wife's parents and they were going to Europe that he realized that he would not be able to actually pay for the hotels, food, and transportation once they got there.
00:50:38
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
the The parents were buying their flights.
00:50:38
Caroline
prepaid for vacations.
00:50:41
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Right. buying their flight
00:50:44
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And they wanted to be there at the same time. And, you know, the daughter, I guess, came from that kind of family. And they want to be in Europe and they're going to go to start in France. and And he just was going right along. Well, of course we have the money. Let's go.
00:50:59
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
But he realized on the day before they were going to go on their trip that he was going to have a problem when they got to Europe.
00:51:10
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Because when they got there and they tried to put anything on any credit card,
00:51:14
Caroline
who's gonna decline.
00:51:15
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
It was going to be over, you know, they're going to collect it.
00:51:19
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And he doesn't have any actual money in the bank account to get out anything from a cash machine.
00:51:25
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He started to realize, well, I need to go get my parents' estate. I know that they have an estate that split in half would be $400 to me and $400 to my
00:51:36
Caroline
Well, and he must have, that must be, she sent $500 that night to him. So they had had a conversation about him needing money. I'm so curious if he was like in any way trying to get a larger amount. And she just said, look, I can't fund whatever problems you are getting yourself into in this way. I'm happy to help you. Here's $500 like,
00:52:00
Caroline
do X, Y, Z for the next couple of weeks. Let's connect and figure out a game plan. Like that's my guess is probably, and he thought, hell no. And I know you got more money and.
00:52:12
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Well, yeah. i mean, they had their pensions and they had their, I don't know if they have life insurance, but they certainly, now that their kids are out of the house, they may not, but they certainly had the house.
00:52:23
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So if both of them died at the same time, there would be an estate and it would be worth X and it would be divided by two, I'd have $400,000.
00:52:31
Caroline
Right. Well, probably four, actually, because his daughter's two. I mean, everybody's, and they're a copacetic family, so I don't see any reason why they wouldn't divide that.
00:52:38
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Well, the house was in Carla's name.
00:52:40
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Now, remember when she divorced her husband, um she she so kept the house.
00:52:50
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So, you know, by the time she had met ah her second husband, Alan Rutherford, ah he just moved in with her.
00:52:59
Caroline
That's right. Okay.
00:53:00
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So she he did not have a stake in their largest house.
00:53:04
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And I don't think he even, he probably had his own thing going on.
00:53:08
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I mean, you know, they they met in later life.
00:53:11
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He was, they met, they were married for 10 years. They knew each other for a long, long time. But they were, you know, they were independent in that way, I think. But back to the killer, Richard Taylor.
00:53:23
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
This is a man who, in my opinion, never grew up past kindergarten. You know, this lying all the time, scheming all the time. Different schemes. If this one doesn't work, I'll try something else.
00:53:35
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
These are the actions of someone with no honest thoughts, if you ask me. And I'm saying i'm thinking of myself when I was maybe four.
00:53:44
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
You know, you just figure out how am I going get that cookie?
00:53:47
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
That is the center of your universe. And then when the cookie is gone from the table, you say, well, the dog must have got it. And in fact, you're scheming about the dog being in the room at the same time.
00:54:01
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I mean, you know, I don't know if I was doing that, but that would be like my mind at that time is you're just, that was, I was, I would lie.
00:54:05
Caroline
It seems very innocent. Yeah.
00:54:10
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
i would scheme.
00:54:11
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I was four.
00:54:12
Caroline
Totally. It's a survival thing, I think.
00:54:14
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
You know, you find out later you do that, you're not only going to not get that cookie, you're not going to get your dinner, and you're going to get whipped.
00:54:20
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So your butt's going to get busted when your father comes home. It's that kind of thing. So no, nobody, I don't know what happened to this man, but he never grew up past kindergarten, in my opinion.
00:54:34
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He owed, at the time of the murder, $33,000 in credit card debt.
00:54:40
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
You're never going to get out of that hole. Never.
00:54:42
Caroline
That's pretty big.
00:54:44
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He had his wife believing that they had more than $150,000 in savings in their joint savings account. No, it was not joint. It might be joint in name only, but it's not joint.
00:54:55
Caroline
Yeah, she can check it.
00:54:55
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
You are the king of... He's running a... He might as well be Bernie Madoff.
00:55:01
Caroline
Well, that's what I'm thinking. And I'm wondering if she couldn't check it. Like you said, it wasn't actually joint or it was in a way that he had intentionally made it difficult for her to verify it. And that's, of course, why she wouldn't verify Because I have an understanding as to why she would just take what he's saying at face value.
00:55:17
Caroline
But this would shock me. So I do feel badly for her if she truly didn't have any clue and was being, because that's shocking. And it gives me a pit in my stomach so I can only imagine. and
00:55:28
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Well, yeah, I mean, you know, if you're eating at Tim Hortons three times a day and your kids are two, understand why you might have more than $30,000 in credit card debt.
00:55:35
Caroline
Yeah, that's a lot.
00:55:42
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And how he was able to, and i mean, did she ever do the math? I just don't know.
00:55:50
Caroline
That's the part where I'm like, i can kind of understand if she was locked out.
00:55:50
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
ah don't know.
00:55:54
Caroline
But now that you say that, there are also some self-awareness things that maybe should have ticked off. But anyway.
00:55:59
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Well, maybe he told her his salary was X and that he also had this other business on the side.
00:56:02
Caroline
Right. That's it.
00:56:05
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I do know that he was a shoplifter and that he was banned from almost every store in their community.
00:56:13
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I mean, Tim Hortons is probably the only establishment he could ever go in and had to pay money.
00:56:21
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Friends during his trial took the stand to give testimony about all the money they loaned him over the years without seeking a... He never gave them a dime back.
00:56:33
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So he does have a high income... But he's spending it at Tim Hortons and he's spending it on God knows what else.
00:56:40
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And he's going around treating his non-existent pancreatic cancer, stealing from school. Evidence showed that two days before the fire and the murder of his parents and and stepfather, Carla and Alan, he feigned an injury.
00:56:56
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
on his right leg and started walking with a cane. So he's got like a superficial type of, uh, scrape or something on his right leg, but he enhanced that with a lot of makeup and he is walking with a cane, uh, two days before the fire.
00:57:16
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So he's premeditating this fire that I can't possibly be considered as the fire blower, you know, the fire setter because I'm crippled.
00:57:29
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He was somewhat dismissed as a suspect at first because of this, you know.
00:57:35
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
But police started following him because they interviewed him one time and it just, you know, police have these radar. This is what they have.
00:57:45
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
You know, I have gardening.
00:57:46
Caroline
They deal entirely with liars.
00:57:47
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
They have radar.
00:57:48
Caroline
Yeah. Like, so they can sniff lies in the room pretty easily. And if you're lying to them, they're going to want to know why.
00:57:51
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Oh, yeah.
00:57:55
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Oh, yeah. they've They have worked with so many compulsive liars that, you know, they they probably are well aware of ah people like him.
00:58:07
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So anyway, when he came in to be interviewed ah sometime later, when the police had started following him, thinking, you know, this guy is hinky.
00:58:19
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
We need to start following him.
00:58:21
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And of course you had the seven or eight people that the burned up.
00:58:27
Caroline
They said it was him. Yeah, that Alan told that it was him.
00:58:29
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yeah.
00:58:31
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Right. Alan told everybody. Alan was what you said. He was dead man walking. His brain had him walking around dead.
00:58:42
Caroline
Doing all the things.
00:58:43
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
But the part of the brain that don't forget to tell them that it was
00:58:48
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Richard Taylor, Carla's son, that did this.
00:58:50
Caroline
get your thoughts out. Yeah.
00:58:54
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I'm telling you, you're right.
00:58:55
Caroline
ah Yeah, I think so. Because 80% of your body, you're not surviving that. Sorry. Like.
00:59:01
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
It's like sleepwalking, although this was deep much deeper than this.
00:59:05
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
It was a subs, you know, he wasn't in any pain because you cannot comprehend that kind of pain with your brain.
00:59:12
Caroline
but The brain is functioning.
00:59:13
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So the brain is already checking out.
00:59:15
Caroline
yeah Yeah, it's doing some shutdown processes, but some of that is dumping critical information.
00:59:15
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yeah.
00:59:17
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yes.
00:59:21
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Well, and a lot of his nerves had been burned by being burned.
00:59:26
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So anyway, ah he's had one interview and with the police, and they got a hinky feeling, so they started following him, Mr. Limp Man, Mr. Kane Walker.
00:59:41
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
When he came in a different time to the police, he told them that it was his left leg that was injured. But then he changed it back to the right leg when he realized that he had made a superficial cut on his right knee.
00:59:55
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And when the police said, well, can you know pull up your leg and let me see your hurt leg and there was nothing wrong with the leg. And then he thought, oh, it probably is my right leg.
01:00:05
Caroline
um okay so career criminal here no
01:00:09
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
No, he, this man is a hop, skip and jumper over every lie and every murder that he's doing because he's just going from moment to moment, like a four-year-old, like a four-year-old.
01:00:19
Caroline
moment yeah thank you yep cover the eyes you can't see me now mean invisible
01:00:28
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
During the surveillance of him and during the investigation in general, police found much video surveillance. The CCTV-type footage on different stores and roadways showed Richard walking just fine, getting out of his car, getting into his car, going in the store, doing store stuff, just fine without the cane.
01:00:52
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
They found him and made video of him walking in a ditch alongside a road one time in the wind and rain, no cane.
01:01:05
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So he's walking on irregular ground ah and he's in the rain and the wind and he's looking down and he's looking every inch of that ditch for something.
01:01:21
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He was there a very long time. When police confronted him with the video, he told police, well, he didn't need the cane anymore, even though he was on his cane when they were talking to him.
01:01:36
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So they're talking to him. i don't need that cane anymore. You mean that cane that you came in on?
01:01:44
Caroline
and You're trying to sell us right now.
01:01:48
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He said, well, oh, yeah, but I mean, you know, so I was starting to heal. I don't know. He just, this man, he said that when they said, what were you looking for?
01:01:59
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He said, well, I was looking for a note he had written to his mother after her death and that it had blown out the window of his car.
01:02:08
Caroline
um Okay. That's weird.
01:02:11
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I don't think it's weird to write letters to your loved one who has died. I think that's pretty common. However, to have it in your car and then to have it blow out the window...
01:02:29
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And then you're going to forego your cane and get out and look for it in a ditch. And then later forget that you have a cane when you tell the police that you didn't need your cane. And there it is right there in front of you and them.
01:02:44
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
That's weird.
01:02:45
Caroline
What was he looking for in that ditch?
01:02:45
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So, yeah.
01:02:47
Caroline
I want to know now.
01:02:50
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So I don't know. One of the things that police found when they finally got enough evidence that they could get a search warrant, they went to his house and he had the exact same box matches that they found outside the home of Carla and Alan on the night that their bedroom was set on fire.
01:03:17
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
So Richard Taylor was convicted and sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 25 years. Now that's a standard. wait Here in America, life in prison, no parole.
01:03:30
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
That's it. In Canada, they believe ah in redemption and they will allow you to have 25 years in prison minimum. You can go for parole, but you may never get out.
01:03:45
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
The judge called Richard Taylor a monster. He put that on the record. He put this following on the record. He said he would be sentencing him to 50 years before a parole eligibility if the law would allow him to.
01:04:01
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And he pointed out the following.
01:04:04
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
You locked the door after you ignited an inferno around the bed of your parents,
01:04:15
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And you made it so that they couldn't get out. But Alan, who was a superhero, jumped out the window and told the world what had happened.
01:04:26
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Now, Richard was 47 when he was convicted in 2022. So he will be in prison at least until 2047, when he will be in his early 70s.
01:04:38
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
And I certainly am one amongst the judge that I hope he never gets out. I think he deserves to be removed from society forever, in my opinion.
01:04:50
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
To me, a human being who can burn his own mother and stepfather just for a little cash is a monster.
01:04:56
Caroline
Yeah, that's crazy.
01:04:58
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He had the maturity of a four-year-old, which I've already said, and a mind that could come up with the schemes every day. That's all he ever did with that mind of his.
01:05:07
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
To have something he wanted, not something he actually needed in most cases. He didn't need to go to Europe.
01:05:15
Caroline
Right. Yeah, exactly.
01:05:18
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
He lied all the time. He stole all the time. He murdered to keep on doing it. Remember that Richard has a brother named Chris, and I want to end with him. For me, Carla and Alan richard Rutherford excuse me are my heroes.
01:05:32
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
The way they lived and the way they loved others and helped other others, I don't believe I will ever forget these special people. This is me talking before I get to Chris.
01:05:47
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
The grief a family experiences due to parasite, the killing of a parent by a child, is unlike any other. It is very painful for Chris, but perhaps even more so painful for Chris's father, who's also named Richard Taylor.
01:06:06
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
This is what Chris said. He's understandably having a very difficult time with this, says Chris. I don't want to make him feel any worse or any more conflicted.
01:06:18
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I can't even bring myself to imagine the tightrope he has had to walk trying to support both of us through all of this. Now that tells me that...
01:06:29
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
ah that Richard Taylor's father, Richard Taylor Sr., stood by his son.
01:06:39
Caroline
not only that, but that that Chris can see that as another human being in the midst of what is incredibly difficult situation for anyone, ah regardless of how you choose to respond to it.
01:06:43
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Yes.
01:06:50
Caroline
Such emotional intelligence and just pure love and devotion to people as your people, you know, just right.
01:06:57
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Right.
01:06:59
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Oh, he's got all the right parts. He does.
01:07:01
Caroline
that And it's spelled out in that tightrope comment. That is a tightrope to love someone and recognize the evil they have performed on you, you know.
01:07:05
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Oh, yeah.
01:07:09
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
Chris said that throughout this entire process, I have tried to respect people's positions, even if I don't share the same viewpoint.
01:07:20
Andy, Bridget and Caroline
I have no interest in piling on.
01:07:22
Caroline
Yeah. Oh, you sound so sweet, Chris. I'm so sorry.
