Podcast Return and Breaks
00:00:50
Speaker
Hey guys, so welcome back to the pod. I know last week I missed you guys and I feel like I should have announced it, but at the same time I was kind of planning on like, I'm like, oh, maybe I will come back in time and I will have time to record that episode, but it didn't happen.
00:01:05
Speaker
Yeah, in case you guys didn't listen to last week's episode, well, the one that I missed before that, I was out of town, and by the time I got back and everything, I couldn't have time to just record an episode. And I feel like I should have recorded two episodes before, but again, I was also out of town, so there was no way for me to publish that, so...
00:01:28
Speaker
apologize for that i apologize but yeah i'm back and it's good to have like sometimes break once in a while so i'm glad i did it it's not so bad
Introduction to New York Fashion Week
00:01:40
Speaker
Anyway, so in today's episode, I'm going to be talking about New York Fashion Week. That is the episode that I want to dedicate it to and I feel like a lot of people are always interested and like they're always so excited about it and I feel like there's a lot of things that I could share. Not like that I'm saying that, oh my god, I have been to like every single thing that's been happening with New York Fashion Week.
00:02:03
Speaker
No, but I feel like I have learned so much as living in New York City, but also just have gone to New York Fashion Week three years now, three, four years. So I feel like I have my few cents to share.
00:02:18
Speaker
So yeah, that's what we're going to talk about today. But before that, let me talk to you guys a little bit update. So this update is going to be very fun one because since I was out of town, right? And
Road Trip to Aspen
00:02:30
Speaker
I told you guys where I was visiting one of the places that was on my bucket list, Aspen, Colorado.
00:02:36
Speaker
So what we did first, we went to Denver, because Aspen actually airport exists, but it's very tiny and also I really wanted to do a road trip. You guys know I love road trips, so I did not mind at all. But I didn't realize how much traffic there would be from Denver. Because after maybe like first two hours,
00:03:00
Speaker
the traffic was horrible like absolutely horrible and imagine guys the Tesla I rented because it was also like cheap one uh surprisingly because I thought it would be expensive it was actually pretty cheap on Toro
00:03:17
Speaker
some reason, I don't know why they would do this because I feel like that's the reason people rent Tesla, that autopilot was not enabled at all. And what I mean by that is like because you have to also kind of like put auto steering enabled, then you can click on auto autopilot, but that was not even enabled at all and you had to park to do it and I didn't know about that.
00:03:38
Speaker
So imagine I am in the middle of traffic and I was trying to put on autopilot and it was saying that, oh, autopilot is not enabled or something. And I couldn't just, I could have technically put on park, but I like didn't want to get like rear ended all of a minute. So first two hours I drove by myself.
00:03:58
Speaker
I know this sounds ridiculous but I can see how why people get frustrated like gas car drivers especially when you're stuck in traffic for hours and you're going by like inch and inch like you know it's like stop and go traffic you know like there are some traffic's it's like yeah it's congested but it's not like terrible but this one was like
00:04:21
Speaker
Stop and go like it was so bad in that aspect. I can understand how frustrating that is and how Tiring that is because imagine I was wearing these like cute shoes Which ended up not being comfortable and my ankle the part that I was using for the gas I don't know what was happening with my shoes by the time I we got to Aspen my ankle was like that only ankle like the right feet and
00:04:48
Speaker
It was like bruised in a way that like it was so close to be bleeding It was so strange and I wore like thick socks Imagine how many times I did like stuff and go to like I guess it really touched the shoes in some part I didn't expect that
00:05:06
Speaker
Anyways, yeah, that's the beginning of it, but after we got off the like after two hours when we were supercharging and taking a break That's when the fun starts. I would say I mean Colorado's I mean Denver is beautiful too, but like after you get outside a bit like that's where the real journey starts like so gorgeous guys like I
00:05:27
Speaker
I feel like it doesn't even feel like this country or US. It doesn't even feel like this world. Like I feel like every part of it just feels so cool and amazing. The views are just to die for. If you're like into mountains or just like the views and nature person would 100% recommend it. And there are so many lakes and everything. Like I was literally like, oh, can we stop here too? Can we stop? Like,
00:05:54
Speaker
I want to stop everywhere and go into the lake, honestly. It was just so gorgeous. And there are some parts that also like kind of goes up and down. It's like there's 10 miles per hour because certain parts, certain turns are so sharp. But that just makes it so fun. I was so excited. My boyfriend was like so scared. He's like, you're going fast. You're going fast.
00:06:13
Speaker
But it was so fun. I absolutely loved it. And the place we were staying, it was great. But Aspen overall is just great. They even have this gondola ride that you can take it to the mountain.
00:06:27
Speaker
It's not the same thing as the ski lift, you know, the ski lift, you just sit on it. This one was like closed surface. It's like a pod that you are in. And some of the pods essentially have Bluetooth speaker inside. You can connect to your phone and listen to the music you like while heading up to the mountain. It's really cool experience. The best $33 that I have spent.
00:06:50
Speaker
and it's actually it takes quite a far so really really cool experience and then uh the whole town it's just like there's so many cute things to do and everything really really um i feel like it's like you know there are some things that's like on your list and you have kind of certain expectations and i feel like this is exactly what i was expecting from aspen and it delivered so it was not disappointing at all
Impressions of Denver
00:07:16
Speaker
Then we also came back and stayed in Denver for like maybe two days. And it was pretty cool too. Like I feel like the area we were staying is really nice, Cherry Creek. It's like very residential with other things to do. But we also visited Denver downtown once, maybe like just a few hours.
00:07:34
Speaker
I'm glad we did not even stay there. I would not recommend visiting downtown. Pretty sketch. They say it's safe during the day, but I would disagree with that. If you don't have to go, I would not recommend going to that area.
00:07:50
Speaker
I mean if you want to see that bear in the convention center I guess go for that but like it's just a bear nothing super extraordinary about it but yeah overall I would say Corrada was 10 out of 10 from me one thing I would say though the airport
00:08:09
Speaker
Something about it just like it smells but it also looks so old. I mean I cannot tell from the outside but inside it's just like very outdated. I was pretty surprised because it's an international airport. Like I could have expected that from Aspen because it's like small airport and stuff but like Denver Airport it is very old outdated.
00:08:31
Speaker
Old not actually outdated. Maybe it's because like I'm so spoiled because JFK is so updated and everything and now LGA used to be shit now. It's like Top-notch they've spent so much money. It looks gorgeous. So maybe I'm spoiled but yeah, I will tell you guys on that experience
00:08:50
Speaker
because it's like once you get to the airport and you're like once you land and like you're getting inside the terminal you're like oh this is the gate this is the place like it's like like you're traveling back in time but other than that i think whole place was great i would 100 visit colorado again because it's such a beautiful state i'm not sure if i would visit in the in the winter because it's like cold kind of but such a gorgeous state like
00:09:17
Speaker
Absolutely would recommend for anyone visiting at least once. On that note, you can end this update and now let's talk on your fashion link.
Athletic Greens Promotion
00:09:28
Speaker
Today's episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens. So I started taking AG1 because I never really liked taking pills or vitamins and I just really wanted to take a supplement that tastes great and also it's just not pills or vitamins, maybe something in all in one. And that's what AG1 is.
00:09:49
Speaker
So AG1 consists of 75 high quality vitamins, minerals, whole foods source, superfoods, probiotics and adoptogens. So I have been using it for a while now and I love it. It doesn't taste like super healthy. It has kind of a mild tropical taste that you can drink every day and won't get tired of.
00:10:11
Speaker
It costs you less than $3 a day and you're investing in your health. It is cheaper than your cold brew habits. Trust me, I know, I spend probably way too much money for coffee. It is cheaper than getting all the different supplements yourself and you're investing all-in-one nutritional insurance essentially. Right now, it is time to reclaim your health and arm your immune system with the convenient daily nutrition.
00:10:36
Speaker
It's just one scoop in a cup of water every day. That's it. No need for a million of different pills and supplements to look out for your health. To make it easy, Athletic Greens is going to give you free one-year supply of immune-supporting vitamin D and five free travel packs with your first purchase. All you have to do is visit athleticgreens.com slash emerging. Again, that is athleticgreens.com slash emerging to take ownership over your health and pick up the ultimate daily nutritional insurance.
Overview of Fashion Week
00:11:08
Speaker
so if you guys are not familiar with new york fashion week it's very similar to like what other countries sometimes do is like there's paris fashion week there's milan fashion week all this kind of stuff essentially this entire week is that like where the certain shows happen by emerging designers but also non-designers
00:11:30
Speaker
9 out of 10 emerging designers are the ones that like kind of like programmed into one event but it's like multiple designers into one show and they are back to back because you know you're emerging you don't have a lot of funding it's probably provided by another company
00:11:49
Speaker
There's a company called Nolcha, Nolcha shows, they essentially do that, they fund these emerging brands and essentially like one show has like three brands and you get to see them. I have actually done like, I've shown the shows before, like last one if you go back to my vlog channel you will see it.
00:12:10
Speaker
I didn't go this time because it was so hectic I just got back into town and there were so many things for me to do but yeah I think there was still event going on I got the invitation for so that's one thing but there though there are known brands that out there
00:12:26
Speaker
they kind of do their own thing sometimes because they're so well known and they have almost unlimited amount of budget and they kind of want to do their own thing so that's kind of unique in that way I can see that and sometimes some of these brands also like they end up not even doing their show during fashion week they sometimes do it like whenever they want to
00:12:49
Speaker
It's kind of a thing but some brands want to do that and some brands do it like at the high school, some brands do it at the gym, I don't know, places. Like it's sometimes not even the venue because most people expect it's at Spring Street or one of the studios that very usual fashion week happens but some brands are super exclusive that they they are like we are better than you so they don't do that.
00:13:13
Speaker
Yeah, that's like the menu-ish stuff. But 9 out of 10, it's like it happens in my head. And like in rare occasion, I have seen it happen outside of my head.
Getting Invited to Fashion Week
00:13:24
Speaker
But 9 out of 10, it's like in my head. Other parts. So experience of getting invited. So this is a very, very tricky part because
00:13:34
Speaker
i would say because when i first you know got to new york right and that was maybe i don't remember when was that but i was interning for this blog it was like a fashion lifestyle blog and they were from them i heard it because i was never really like interested in like oh i want to go to new york fashion week or whatever but they were always saying that like new york fashion week wasn't it used to be like it's just now
00:14:01
Speaker
not as exclusive anyone can essentially go if you claim yourself as a media or press then you know you have option to go and this is where things get a bit tricky so i would definitely say yes there's a lot of chance for you to just go even if you don't have a lot of credentials as long as you claim yourself that like you're this person
00:14:24
Speaker
that is for sure but the other thing you have to remember unlike many things this also depends on the seating chart and how they do the rows and seating because some brands they want everyone to see the show in the best position as possible so they don't even do rows they kind of do like
00:14:43
Speaker
bunch of zigzag lines so that everyone can kind of are essentially one like in the first row just one row but just goes around in circles so the models kind of walk around and everyone gets to see them in the best angle as possible but some shows because there's not enough space they have to do the rows that's where things get tricky because there are times that they invite you and you get the invitation
00:15:13
Speaker
But you never know where you will be sitting because just because you get the invitation and you accepted the invitation, so you reserved it, that doesn't necessarily mean that you will get to sit. I remember my very first Fashion Week show and this was I Think Man's from Park & Ronin.
00:15:34
Speaker
nothing against them or anything it's just it was my first time so i didn't even know honestly they gave me backstage access so i did get to see the backstage and everything and the models it was really cool but by the time i got there because they told me prior priority standing so i i didn't know what that meant so it essentially means that like you get to stand in the front but you don't get to sit
00:15:58
Speaker
I didn't know that was a thing. So you're essentially just standing. So that's essentially also things. So like just because you reserved it, that doesn't mean that you even have a seat. There's a chance that like you would just stand.
00:16:13
Speaker
So that is the thing. And you never get to know where you will be sitting until the very last minute.
Seating Dynamics at Fashion Week
00:16:21
Speaker
Meaning like you'll be lucky if it is like two days before or something. Nine out of ten, it's like the day before or even like 12 hours or 10 hours before.
00:16:32
Speaker
or sometimes you don't even know and you get there and they tell you so you never know where you will be it's kind of tricky on that and sometimes like it's very interesting that like how they put the imitation they would send the imitation make it seem like you know they want you and like you're exclusive and stuff like that then you end up being on the third row
00:16:57
Speaker
Which is not a bad thing, I'm saying, that you get to see the show, but it's like a bunch of heads that you are seeing and you don't see everything. Obviously, I feel like second row and the first row are great, because first row, nine out of 10, it's like the best seats. And also, most of the time, they have like swag bags or after party or some sort of invitation in those first rows, and sometimes on second rows as well.
Receiving Fashion Week Invitations
00:17:26
Speaker
on first rows there are usually specific instructions, specific things that's assigned to it or it almost even have the name of people because they're so it's so exclusive. So to say the least, I know I use this word a lot, it's very exclusive just because you do get an invitation that doesn't mean that like you know
00:17:48
Speaker
That doesn't mean that, like, you are someone. That's what I'm trying to say. I'm not trying to, like, break anyone's ego, but, like, I'm just saying that's what happened to me when I first got it. Like, I thought, like, oh my god, like, it's so great. Like, I'm gonna be the first row, but it's just not. Like, they make you seem like that you are this person. Then you get there, you're, like, humbled by being the third row. Or just standing. Yeah.
00:18:14
Speaker
So the way you get invited is like few ways. So one either you get an invitation directly from the brand. This is like the best part because like you have direct contact with the brand and like obviously there's a chance that like you they will
00:18:29
Speaker
sit you well and everything and like you know the person and everything that's great other one is the PR this is not bad either but because the brand sometimes because brand wouldn't know you unless you're like this big person or known celebrity or something so like you might not get that priority seating or anything like that and lastly this one is like an app it's called GPS radar app first you have to be i think somewhat um
00:18:59
Speaker
Invited, I don't know how it works these days, but the time that I signed up for it, I was invited by someone, some brand to visit that app, and then I signed up. So with this app, essentially you can browse the shows that are available. Even if you don't get invited to these, you can request an invite. Doesn't mean that you're gonna get it, but you can request an invite and you can go to them if you like.
00:19:25
Speaker
That's a cool part of this thing and you can see all the other shows as well. It's not just New York Fashion Week. You can see Paris Fashion Week. You can see many other fashion week. It's all fashion related news and stuff. And as long as you claim that like, you know, you are some sort of press or media blog or something like that, there's a chance that you will get
Social Dynamics of Fashion Week
00:19:44
Speaker
in. So it's not that tricky.
00:19:47
Speaker
But the part I was trying to mention is that I think this is the reason I'm saying the New York fashion can be sometimes so toxic because it's all about the popularity. It feels like you are in this high school and you are having lunch with people.
00:20:05
Speaker
and you know where the popular kids are and you know where the people who are new or just like you're just there you know that I feel like affects you a lot I mean maybe it's just me but I feel like it does affect a lot and not just say that but like just like people will make you feel a certain type of way and
00:20:27
Speaker
It sucks, I have to be honest. That's why I promised myself that I wouldn't go to as many shows. I would only go to the ones that I really want to see because it also takes so much effort. That's what people sometimes I feel like don't realize. You could get invited to many shows, right?
00:20:46
Speaker
But unless you're this big, popular, I don't know, you are like this shot, you know, a big popular shot, like that you're like the it person.
00:20:59
Speaker
They're not gonna send you a ride or they're not gonna send you a clothes to wear. Not even a ride, like skip that, but like send you clothes. I feel like that's the biggest part is that like if they, I feel like if they send me clothes, I would definitely go because it is so hard to wear something that's cool to the fashion show.
00:21:21
Speaker
Not just to say that like you don't have anything to wear but you cannot wear something super normal because no ever is gonna look at you like Yo, like it's just so basic because fashion is all about like, you know something eccentric something really I don't know like jaw-dropping something like ah Like out of the ordinary in a way
00:21:44
Speaker
And that is kind of hard to find and hard to do sometimes. You cannot just pull that off last minute. Again, that's what I'm saying. You have to be prepared. So imagine if you get invited to multiple shows. Great, but how are you going to pull off that outfit or multiple outfits? Because the whole point of you coming up with this outfit and everything is that you get your pictures taken.
Challenges of Fashion Week
00:22:12
Speaker
So that's another thing. It's like a... What is it? It's like Hunger Games. Everyone wants their pictures taken. Obviously some people's pictures will automatically get taken because they are celebrities, they are super famous. But if you are no one like me, so you obviously want your pictures taken.
00:22:31
Speaker
but it wouldn't just happen if you wore like polo shirt and dress pants even if it looked nice or even if you have nice clothes that you are wearing and just cool but if it is basic
00:22:46
Speaker
They're not going to look at you. Even if you want to talk to them, they will pretend like they took your pictures, but they didn't. Or they would ask for the name and everything that they wouldn't even post it. I'm just saying. So you want to get their attention. These photographers from Getty Images, BFA, you want that.
00:23:04
Speaker
So it's very hard and that's why you have to come up with these extraordinary like the office and stuff. So they're like, oh, that's cool. Let's take a picture. That's how it works. So it's the Hunger Games because like everyone wants to get there and everyone's their pictures taken.
00:23:22
Speaker
and you only maybe have a few seconds to get your pictures taken and that's why you should arrive earlier so like that maybe someone sees you or the photographer sees you so you can get your pictures taken because right after the show all these people like the very famous people they have their interviews and stuff good luck like even making a connection and stuff that's another thing come to the point like making connections
00:23:45
Speaker
a lot of people say like oh my god yeah i'm going to the fashion week and like i'm going to these shows because i want to make connections and everything don't get me wrong yeah this could happen if you come early to the show and like you would have time and to do it but nine out of ten it's like not gonna happen it depends on the type of the shows but
00:24:07
Speaker
It's very hard to network because everyone kind of like stays in their circle again very high school ish It's like a click like they have their own circle and they do that if you try to talk to them They will look you up and down and be like what who are you? What are you wearing? Why would I talk to you?
00:24:25
Speaker
It's very like Mean Girls Wipe, I would say. Again, not everyone is like that, I'm just saying. The fashion world is so cruel in a way, and no one is ever honest with you. And
Benefits of Fashion Week After-Parties
00:24:37
Speaker
I have learned this in the hard way, that there are so many times that brands were nice to me, but only the reason I did something to them.
00:24:46
Speaker
And then all of a sudden, they just forgot that I even existed like I ever did. And I remember I was there for them from the beginning. Now they're like, who are you? Just like that. But there's so many good sides to New York Fashion Week. And this is the part that I'm actually excited about is the parties, the after parties or events related to New York Fashion Week. This is where I would say
00:25:15
Speaker
I love so much and I would say I thrive so much because I would say, don't get me wrong, Fashion Week is great, the shows are great, but it's so intense for me that I'm like, I don't want to be a part of it. Yeah, again, maybe one or two shows that I'm like, oh, okay, I can do. I don't want to do too many shows, but the parties, after parties, these events where it's at, you can network, you can get swag bags, you can get so many things for sure, like for free.
00:25:43
Speaker
but on top of it you get to like talk to so many cool people and you will get to see really cool people like the people that you're probably following on TikTok or people that like you probably wanted to see like as you know the celebrities and you would see them at these parties and that's why I would say like these are much better than the New York Fashion Week itself and I know this like people do this even more that like they instead of just going to the shows they go to these parties and stuff
00:26:10
Speaker
it's almost like a similar thing like how people do with Coachella and I would say this like very similar because there's Coachella in the festival itself and people go to that but then there's festivals outside of Coachella and the parties outside of Coachella and I know people that they just specifically only go to these parties and the festivals outside of Coachella just for that they don't even have tickets to Coachella
00:26:35
Speaker
And that's very similar to New York Fashion Week, because that's where the most shit happens to anyways. Not to say the main event is not great, but depends on what you are there for. And that's why the reason I would say it's good that these parties exist, because before I never understood that, because I'm like, how could you even make that happen? Because it's like...
00:26:56
Speaker
some shows are so back-to-back and the parties are way after I'm like how can you go to those it's very intense in a way but I'm like if you just go to the parties that's kind of cool it's very chill laid back and you don't have to wear anything extraordinary or like very eccentric you can wear like basic clothes and it would be fine because no one is expecting you to wear that because it's after party and the parties
00:27:20
Speaker
And that's where you're going to make a lot of connections, maybe even meet people that you'd go into business with. I'm just saying, like, it's such a cool experience. Would 100% recommend just having to those opportunities. That's why going to some shows are worth it because they have after parties that you can go to. But again, not every after party is worth it, but some are. And that's where the main networking happens.
00:27:45
Speaker
Whoever tells you that they never work a lot during the shows or the show times, they lie. Maybe 1% or 2% that does that. But other than that, it just doesn't happen from my experience. Again, someone maybe have different experience.
00:28:04
Speaker
But here are some things about New York Fashion Week that I wanted to share with you guys, and I hope these were useful, and I hope you guys like this episode. If you do, please don't forget to rate us on Apple Podcast, or rate every day our podcast, and I'll see you guys next week with another episode. Bye guys.
