Introduction to NYC: Love or Hate?
00:00:15
Speaker
Hi guys, so welcome back to Wild and Basic. And today we are going to be talking about my favorite topic. Seriously, favorite topic. Okay, nevermind. I was being very, very sarcastic. It's not my favorite topic, but again, I was scrolling on TikTok.
00:00:34
Speaker
The other day, I came across this video. Also, I made a video about that. So then I realized, oh my God, I live in New York City and people literally love New York City. They're just obsessed with New York City. So I might as well make an episode about this on my TikTok. I didn't make a video about it on my TikTok.
00:00:57
Speaker
If you guys don't follow me, go follow me there. It's tiktok.com. I don't know why I said it even like that. It's like at Mercedes. Literally just that easy. Okay. South Promi is over.
00:01:10
Speaker
So yes, we're gonna be talking about New York City.
The Dual Nature of NYC: Glamour vs. Grime
00:01:13
Speaker
I just realized that New York City is definitely a place that a lot of people want to live in, and it's just people are obsessed with it. They care about this place so much. And this place is like a shithole, honestly, but yes.
00:01:29
Speaker
And I mean in a little way, not trash it in a way. It's literally a shithole because there's so much garbage, so much rats, people peeing on the street, subway, everywhere. It's literally a shithole. But there's some glamour and some ambiance to this place. Hence, I'm going to show you that TikTok video that I have used also.
00:02:09
Speaker
So anyways, and this is like so viral. It was on TikTok, like some girl was doing it, like how shit New York City is. Cause like she was seeing like rats. I'm like, well, welcome back to New York City or welcome to New York City. So anyways, before I get started all of the facts, I just want to say this video, literally I was just showing rain.
00:02:21
Speaker
I dunno, let's listen.
00:02:32
Speaker
like because New York City has been raining for the past couple days and it has been crazy it has been like pouring i'm just like wow so much for this summer right anyway so and i just posted this video and used this audio it literally got like thousand views but when i try for like tiktok
00:02:50
Speaker
I don't know, dances or those like lip sync stuff. It doesn't work and I spent like fucking 30 minutes on it. Whatever, you know, whatever. But this New York City, me just showing like rain, got a thousand views is because it's New York City. Hence, and this fact that like New York City is that glamorous and also that, you know,
00:03:13
Speaker
You're reachable. People are just like, wow, New York fucking city. New York city is amazing. So yes, let's get started talking about some of the beauty of this New York city that I had been living in for the past, I don't know, six, seven years.
Overpopulation and Public Transport Woes
00:03:31
Speaker
So I have done all learned so much. So I want to share it with you guys.
00:03:37
Speaker
First, I will talk about how overpopulated New York City is. And I just feel like people don't understand this and it is seriously overpopulated. And definitely there's a difference between the boroughs because New York City is huge.
00:03:53
Speaker
I can't believe Staten Island is part of New York City, but it is. So yes, if you guys don't know, New York City has five boroughs, so depending on the borough you're in, it could be overpopulated or not. Flushing is supposed to be the most overpopulated place, but I feel like Manhattan is the most. It's just because I feel like Manhattan is so small compared to all other boroughs. But anyways, that's just my thought.
00:04:16
Speaker
Because it's overpopulated, it's just like, there's just so many people. Like, I mean, so many fucking people. I'm just dropping this F bomb, but like, okay, seriously, there's just so many people. Literally, when you walk outside. I mean, now it's COVID season, so that's like, it's a little bit different, but still people I feel like don't care. But it is just like, crazy. Like,
00:04:39
Speaker
When you walk on the street, you literally have to push people. Subway, which we'll talk about in the transportation part, but this part is more about the population. It's just very crazy. So, so overpopulated. When you walk on the street, you really have to be careful sometimes because people will literally
00:04:58
Speaker
hate you to just pass by you. And the thing is, like some of these things just happen is not because they do it on purpose. It's just because they're probably running somewhere. People are just like always busy, which is something else to talk about about New York City that like people are always working. So it definitely it's a very populated area, which is the reason I feel like it's just like it is so congested and like every all the prices are super high, hence comes into the
00:05:26
Speaker
you know, like living in New York City. But first, let's talk about like hot commuting. So in New York City, most people, I feel like, yeah, definitely like 80, 90% of people, they use Subway. Subway is just like, you know, it's a basic transportation that everyone uses, and it's pretty good, I would say.
00:05:45
Speaker
Like in terms of because it can take you anywhere It can literally take you from like the further place to another place like you can literally go anywhere with that I Can't go all the way to like Forest Hills like it's crazy. So it's pretty big
00:06:01
Speaker
But there's downsides to it. For a subway, it's like the sometimes more sketchiest place. And I mean, it's just so sketchy. You can literally see people peeing on the subway. I have noticed it in my eyes. Homeless people, no offense to homeless people, just sleeping on the subway. People literally cursing on the subway. People literally cutting their nails on the subway. People doing their makeup on the subway.
00:06:31
Speaker
Which is like there's no like there I mean, I'm not saying these are all wrong We're just like so weird sometimes and sometimes people like this is the worst part and I feel like Tories love this part But people who live in New York City just they're like, why why is this happening?
00:06:46
Speaker
like people would be dancing or singing so sometimes don't get me wrong i i guess some singers are nice and it's it's okay i don't mind it but sometimes it's just so so annoying it's just because like people are literally going to work and some people are like dancing right in front of you and sometimes it's like it's not even like regular dance they were like jumping up and down on top of your head and you're like if something happens to me are you gonna pay like i can sue your ass
00:07:12
Speaker
So it's just very difficult. It's super, super annoying. And this is so annoying, especially because tourists be like, oh my god, so cool. Like, ugh, talented. Like, no, bitch. Like, I am trying to go to work that I might be late already. And I'm going to be even late because this person is doing this. I don't know. Like, it's just so crazy. So definitely some ways, like, ugh, so worse. And the thing is, it's just generally also like the dirtiest place.
00:07:40
Speaker
literally the nearest place. One time, this is so real, I'm not even making this up. I think I was coming from Brooklyn, or I was going to Brooklyn. I quite frankly don't remember. But so this girl and the guy, I guess they were drinking, which you're not supposed to be drinking. It's just like you can't have open beverage. But I guess they did not give any flying fuck, nothing.
00:08:10
Speaker
They were drinking and this guy was like so drunk, you know, wasted. So he dropped a bottle of wine in the subway car. So, you know, I think I was so far away. Anyway, he dropped it. So wine spilled all over. So it was so gross. Anyway, so he spilled all over. Then he's like.
00:08:29
Speaker
Baby, baby, I have to pee. It's like, oh my god. Dude, seriously? And then he holds up the train doors. And train every single time because like, hey, we have to go to the next station. He's like, oh, please stand away from the closing doors because we have to move whatever. And it kept happening. And he was holding the doors so he can pee outside.
00:08:58
Speaker
And no one literally said anything. We're just like, well, casual day in New York City just happens. You know, casual, so casual. So anyways, yeah, it was just one of the experiences like using the subway. So cool, right? So, so cool. So glamorous. Part of New York City. So, so glamorous. Just love it here.
00:09:18
Speaker
Anyways, yeah, that was just one part of it. So I'm just going to talk about the other part of transportation that you could be using being in New York City, but that could be like some downsides to
Navigating NYC: Walking, Biking, and Cars
00:09:28
Speaker
it. So let's get to it.
00:09:38
Speaker
So if you're really planning to come back to New York City or come to New York City, I don't know why I keep saying come back, but come to New York City, you should really prepare yourself for walking because in New York City, you pretty much walk everywhere like school, work. I mean, I guess sometimes it's like far away, so you just use subway, but generally you walk. So definitely prepare yourself. It's huge. It's not like other places that like
00:10:03
Speaker
you don't walk so walking is huge in here so which is actually a good thing to like keep you like healthy and also fit but just prepare yourself warning so other thing you can do is definitely biking biking is definitely huge and it's very i i do like this uh time to time but then i also like have incidents that i will mention
00:10:23
Speaker
Okay, so, yesterday, biking could be fun. Like, you can do it for leisure, like, you know, for fun. But if you're gonna be using biking for, like, commuting, I don't know, it really depends. Like, it really depends. Because, okay.
00:10:38
Speaker
Don't get me wrong, again, I'm not trying to trash on New York, but unlike other cities that I have seen, New York City doesn't, not all the avenues have bike lanes, so some of them you kind of just blend in with the cars.
00:10:53
Speaker
And not to say I'm not brave or anything, I have definitely tried this, but it's very, very dangerous to be biking within the cars. It's very hard. I don't have to say other drivers. Most cars are like, okay, they haven't killed me yet. But
00:11:13
Speaker
I really have to say, and this is so true, so many times I almost got killed by taxi drivers. Taxi drivers are the worst. I mean, worst. They follow no rules and it doesn't even come to like following the rules regarding to bikers. It's more like following any sort of rule. They could literally break any rules they want just so they can get their customers.
00:11:35
Speaker
That's how much they care about their customers. Not care about customers, it's more like care to get the customer's money. So they don't care anything about you or the rules, anything like that. They will literally break any sort of rule just to pick up the customers to get that money.
00:11:52
Speaker
they will literally kill you. So it's not safe. So there's so many occasions I was like, oh my God, I can't believe I survived because this was hard. But when there's a lane, so I think Central Park West and some part of the way that like you also go to Battery Park, there's actually little lanes separate for bike and it's perfect. I have to say that is actually pretty nice and you can, you know, bike anywhere. So it's quite nice.
00:12:18
Speaker
But other than that, I wouldn't recommend it. And there's a worse part to it. First of all, you probably cannot, like, can't bike when it's raining. It will be very dangerous, as roads are very slippery or when it's snowing. So not a good idea. Or just when it's cold, like, you're not going to be biking. So it's very hard. Only time you will be biking is in the summer. That's only one part. But other part is, like, in the summer, it's super hot. So you're going to be sweating a lot.
00:12:47
Speaker
I don't know man like there's just like some part of it you're just like yeah I could kind of bike but some part of you are like man I don't know like take your pick I'm just literally giving you my objective opinion about like what I think of biking so
00:13:04
Speaker
Lastly is cars. So first let's talk about Ubers. So definitely Uber is everywhere and it's so easy to get to. You can use Lyft, whatever. So it's very easy. Only thing is like New York City is so congested and has come to the overpopulated city.
00:13:22
Speaker
there's pretty much uber pool everywhere that's the cheapest one and some of it is so weird because you actually have to walk to your spot so crazy but uber x or like the ip whatever those are like the most expensive ones so sometimes it can be super pricey like you could be going from like
00:13:39
Speaker
Midtown to like lower my hand it would be like 40 bucks and like that's almost the same price as going to the airport which is so crazy because like airport is further away and like going from midtown to downtown is like 20 blocks maybe so it's not crazy it could be very pricey unless you're rich then you don't care okay so then it comes to last part which is cars so
00:14:03
Speaker
OK, so people do say you don't need a car. Technically, you don't need a car. But more and more, I'm realizing this might be just me. So if you don't have a license or you don't want to get a car, definitely come to New York City, you'll be fine. But there are other occasions that, like, let's just say,
00:14:19
Speaker
You are going to pick up furniture, you are moving or something. You have to go to the beach or something, which is something we'll talk about later on. But you can't really go. You can't go with a subway or anything, but it's going to take you so much longer. It's going to be so long. You'll be spending little hours on the subway. So definitely a car comes in handy.
00:14:41
Speaker
and you can go places faster. There are downsides to the first, then the parking. So finding a parking is so hard in New York City, and especially because now the COVID and all those restaurants are doing outdoor dining, and they literally are taking this alternate side parking space to put the
00:15:01
Speaker
dining, outdoor dining. So there's literally no space. It's so hard. Yeah, it's just so hard. Other side of parking is like monster parking. So there's two parts to it. So unless you live in a building that has a garage, which is actually nice because yes, you be paying like
00:15:19
Speaker
maybe a lot of money, probably a lot of money for monthly parking, but it will be easy because it's part of the building and they won't charge you for it because there's no attendee or anything, it's just part of the building, so you kind of park yourself, you take it out yourself, so it's totally fine. But if there's a parking that's like private parking that's not part of the building or anything, and that is kind of like, you know, you pay yourself and like there's some attendee there that's picking up your car, so you don't even have the keys of your car, so that is very difficult one because
00:15:50
Speaker
This is so crazy and so expensive. So this happened to me very recently, not to me, like one of our friends, because she came here from Baltimore and we were, you know, she came with a car. So she put her car, you know, in the garage and I mean, paying like for a week, it was not too bad. But then we had to use the car one month time.
00:16:11
Speaker
you have to pay like I think 40 bucks for the attendee to pick up the car so which is crazy so every single time essentially you're picking taking up your car you have to pay 20 to 40 bucks every time if it is private parking so yeah that can get really really pricey and it's so crazy that because it's almost like renting a car so you might as well rent a car because like why would I want to pay that much money it's my own car so why would I do that you know so it is pretty pretty crazy so
00:16:37
Speaker
I mean, you could be, and there's other sites using a car is that you can go to really, really far places so easily. So that's what I'm saying. There's so many upsides to it that you would need, but there's also so much cost to it to keep, so it's very hard to determine. Hence, I would recommend just renting a car.
Opportunities and Competition: The Job Market
00:16:59
Speaker
But generally, when you rent a car in New York City, you generally rent it to get out of New York City. You don't really do it to
00:17:05
Speaker
to transport in New York City, if you know what I mean. So generally do it because you want to go to the beach or you want to go to IKEA, you want to go pick up a furniture, you know, something like you won't be able to do with the subway. Because, I mean, imagine picking up a furniture with the subway. It's crazy. So crazy.
00:17:22
Speaker
So, I mean, I feel like you can do it now because of COVID. It's so empty, but in the past, it's so packed. Imagine even like using the subway to go to the airport. It is so crazy because it's so packed and everyone would be around you and like looking at you like you are the worst person in the world because of your luggage and you taking so much space.
00:17:43
Speaker
Okay. So now we're going to be talking about good sides of New York City. Um, this is again, all objective, not renting it. So a lot of people say then this is very true. So there's definitely so much opportunity in New York City. Like you definitely can meet a lot of people in terms of networking and it's just, you know, there's just so many job opportunities, but the difficulty is comparing to any other place is that competition is huge. It is just so crazy. So imagine if you're like applying for a job.
00:18:13
Speaker
Oh my god, especially nowadays because of whole COVID situation. It is just so crazy because like one job you're applying for probably has like thousands of applicants. And, you know, let's just say
00:18:27
Speaker
your resume is not that good. There's like bunch of other people like you that they will choose it from. So it's not that difficult. So it is crazy, crazy. And the worst part about it is that like, I just feel like a lot of people don't realize it. They're just like, oh my God, New York City is the place I have to go there. Like that's the place that I have been dreaming or whatever. I'm not gonna lie, those are the things that I had. Like I was thinking when I first got here and I was just like, yeah, this is the place I feel like I can grow and learn from it.
00:18:56
Speaker
And in the beginning, I feel like it did feel like it and I did learn so much. And that's something that I would definitely mention at the end. Like what is something that like good about so much that you can learn from New York City? But like it's just so crazy that like, you know, grow from and do things in New York City. It is very, very hard. You always have to try your
00:19:18
Speaker
Not even best, it's like you really, really have to try. It is so hard to succeed in New York City because there's just so much happening all the time. Let's just say you slow down for a minute, and I mean a minute. It's like, oh, someone else can take your spot, literally. Let's just say you're late to work or whatever. Someone literally can feel your spot in a fucking minute. So that's how competitive and crazy environment is.
High Costs of Living: Rent and Dining Out
00:19:45
Speaker
Another thing that comes to this is like opportunities is that like price, like price so expensive in your city. I'm not talking about like food or anything, I guess, in sort of ways it is, but like some is everywhere. But I mean like apartments and like living situation. So okay, maybe some people might disagree with me on this, but this is just like my objective and what I have experienced.
00:20:10
Speaker
So prices are definitely super high, like so, so crazy. And for me, like my justification is that like it is high, but like for what you pay for them and you see it, they're like, this is like, you're literally paying, I don't know, like maybe 2000 or 2000, like maybe almost three grand to live in a shoe box, literally. And I'm not even joking, like it is that crazy.
00:20:35
Speaker
It just, space is so small, like so, so tiny. That just drives me crazy because for me, it's like if I was going to pay, let's just say, okay, $30,000 a month for rent. But if it was like a spacious apartment, I would totally be down for it. Like one bedroom, nice. It's like, it's just not that like that. Most likely for 3000, you generally get like a stevia.
00:20:57
Speaker
It's just so crazy. And it's not even like a huge studio. It's probably a small studio. So you're like, what? So that's what concerns me so much. Even as the real estate like buying properties here. I don't know. I don't recommend it. I mean, one thing I would say is just like, I mean, maybe because of the COVID now, the real estate is definitely has been so low. But overall, for what you're paying for in here,
00:21:23
Speaker
you can definitely get so much bigger places in somewhere else. It definitely depends on what places you're looking at, but you can totally get worth the money that you will be getting somewhere else. It's just like in New York City, maybe you're going to pay half a million for a steal, and I'm not kidding.
00:21:44
Speaker
So it is very very crazy and it's like not worth it You're like wow or like in the past I have lived with roommates and it was so crazy because like we were all paying so much I'm pretty sure all of us were literally paying like 1,000 something and it was still a small apartment Like I'm just like what what why is that happening? It's just so crazy then it also comes to the point is like that's the reason people are always eating out and
00:22:08
Speaker
So let me explain. So there's definitely a high chance like you can totally cook at home. But again, this is not like Kardashian's house. We don't or like any other houses in the South or like, I don't know, L.A. We don't have that much space. And one thing to say, and this is so true, even in the biggest apartments in New York City, most of them kitchens are super tiny. And I mean, super tiny, even like I have seen apartments that were like five thousand dollars a month.
00:22:37
Speaker
And when I went to see their kitchen, it's like tiny. It's like they don't want us to cook or anything. So it is very difficult to cook. And like most of the time you spend so much time working. So you don't really have time to even cook. So you're kind of like always eating out. So that's kind of like a thing. So I'm just telling you, that's like big aspects to it. And that's why everyone is always eating outside.
00:22:59
Speaker
that just will happen and also that's like one of those times like you can like meet friends and stuff for an excuse you know because you're like i have to eat so that's an opportunity then there's other things that comes to it is that like what is like fun thing to do in new york city so now fun can be determined in different ways
Social Life and Lifestyle: Nightlife and Work Pace
00:23:18
Speaker
I mean, COVID, COVID really ruined the fun, especially in New York City. So there are no clubs right now, but that's what used to be in the past. So clubs are one thing. So comparing to any other cities in the world, maybe not in the world. Okay. I'm exaggerating. Maybe in the States.
00:23:35
Speaker
This has experienced so many times in different places I have, even in L.A. So nightlife is definitely great in New York City. So you can literally be partying until like five a.m., six a.m., until the dawn. So it's definitely a great place to party. So but now covid. So it's not happening anytime soon. So that is that other fun thing to do is like eating outside.
00:23:57
Speaker
Um, then I don't know, walking in the park or anything and going to the beach. Oh, this is the part I would definitely want to talk about and like frustrate me so much. So.
00:24:08
Speaker
Unlike other places, like North Carolina, South Carolina, LA, beaches are so dirty here. And I mean, just like the city, beaches are filthy, like really, really filthy. So you will see glass pieces in the sand so you can totally get it cut. It's so dirty. The water is so gross. You will not see the bottom of the water. It's so gross. Ew. Even when I'm saying it, my skin crawls.
00:24:39
Speaker
So yeah, definitely not recommended. So if you're new here or you're coming here, definitely don't go to like nearest beaches. So hence I was recommending getting a car because like in order to get to the nicest beaches, the Rockway Beach, I guess is a nicer one, slightly nicer one, still a little bit dirty, but that still takes a while because it's like one and a half hour because like you have to take like I think A or C train, no A train, then from A you have to transfer to the S or to the shuttle,
00:25:05
Speaker
It's so crazy. It literally takes you an hour and 30 minutes. So crazy. But the nicest beaches is like in Jersey or in Long Island, which is like nice, like super, super nice. And some of them even charge for entrance and they're super clean. So that's one fun things that people do. But again, because these are costly and also it's far away, a lot of people wouldn't want to spend a few hours a day to just to go to the beach. So they try to go to like closest beaches, but those are the ones that I was like,
00:25:33
Speaker
I wouldn't recommend going at it because it's filthy. So that's why fun things is end up being only just going out, drinking, and yeah, that's kind of the end eating. That's like the only fun things that you end up doing.
00:25:45
Speaker
So I want to mention overall like the lifestyle in New York City. So besides the fact that like, you know, mentioning the fun things to do and work, but overall lifestyle, it's just very, very fast paced, just like Milan. Like it's very, very fast paced. People are always working. So I feel like being in New York City, especially if we are planning to come to New York City, this place is not so much about fun. It's more about work. Literally 90% of your
00:26:12
Speaker
what you are going to be doing is work. So it's not going to be so much about life. That's the part to think about because New York City is very work driven. So that's why people are always working. They have multiple jobs because like cost is so expensive and they have like so many side hustles and stuff and they're always so stressed because like there's always so much going on.
00:26:39
Speaker
That's one thing to consider that like it's so crazy that like you always have to be doing that and that's why it gets people so worked up and I feel like there's this term that people have always been using and they don't quite understand even before I wasn't understanding it that I just realized like I was like yeah I want to be like that I want to be like rude New Yorker like I want to be like me you know New Yorkers are mean it's like I
00:27:01
Speaker
We are not really mean. Okay. I'm not even going to consider myself in New York or whatever, but like, I'm just saying like people who are living near Florida, New Yorkers, like they're not mean.
NYC Attitudes: Rudeness and Social Connections
00:27:10
Speaker
They're just always kind of on defense is because.
00:27:14
Speaker
Let me explain. So unlike other places in New York, you always have to like have your guard because you kind of put your guard down because like literally everywhere you go, even on the street with the homeless people, you always have to have your defense because like one time I even remember I was giving this like I was giving food to homeless man and he literally threw up and threw it in my face.
00:27:36
Speaker
It's just so crazy because they're so rude and violent. People are so violent. People literally can be cursing in your face. It's so crazy. That's why you always have to watch your back. You really have to fight for yourself. It's just so crazy. Especially in New York City, when something is wrong or whatever, people won't make it out for you unless you really work for it. You really have to fight for it. And this also even comes to driving and stuff. That's one reason it's like,
00:28:06
Speaker
Finding a parking is difficult. That's one part of it. But other part about it is like, it's just like, people are so rude, like so, so mean when you even drive. It's like,
00:28:16
Speaker
you really when you even put your signal they will not get it you really have to put your nose of your car so they will get the message that you're going to turn so that's how mean people are and rude they are so and it's just not and i'm not saying just like that like they are bad people it's just because like i realized like in new york everything is happening so fast and people are always taking advantage of each other so that's why you always have to be on defense to protect yourself and you always have to make sure that like
00:28:42
Speaker
You are just like, yes, I have to protect myself in the defense in case someone doesn't do it. That's why I'm just saying, people just take advantage of each other. So you always have to make sure because sometimes even people try to use you for things. That's just one thing in New York City is people care so much about their title. So when they meet or when you meet them or they meet you, first thing they would ask, it won't even be your name. It would be like, what is your job? What do you do?
00:29:11
Speaker
And that's just kind of sad. Not to say like, I don't care what you do. I mean, I do, but it's more like I feel like I care more about you as a person than what you do. So that's the crazy part. And that also kind of connects me to the social circle or like people that you might know. I'm not going to talk about dating because I did talk about relationships in the past episode. But this one is more like general observation that I have experienced.
00:29:39
Speaker
And I'm pretty sure other people can confirm this too. So one thing with New York City is that like, yes, it is big. It's populated. It's overpopulated. It's so big, but it's not big enough that like you can meet like.
00:29:54
Speaker
people in the same crowd, you can find people's crowd from others. So it's so crazy, because people know each other. And that's the crazy part, because you're like, this is not a small town. So how would that happen? It's because since New York is so reachable, like New York City, because people literally can come from Queens to Manhattan, Brooklyn to Bronx. So it's very easy with the subway. So that's why people end up knowing each other. You could literally be friends with someone,
00:30:24
Speaker
then you meet someone else's friend through that friend. It's like literally they know each other somehow or like you meet your, you meet someone new and that's your ex's friend or something. Like it's so crazy and they shockingly know each other and it is insane. Or like when you go on your Instagram, you'll be like, oh, they have mutual friends and like they're friends. You're like, how? What?
00:30:48
Speaker
It's just so crazy. So that is something to think about. Like it's not big enough. And this has happened to me so many times. And I'm pretty sure it's just mostly because of the transportation, because like, I'm just going to compare it real quick to LA because in LA.
00:31:03
Speaker
If you're going to be in Santa Monica or Venice, most likely you're not going to be traveling too much downtown because like traffic is crazy, like literally crazy. So you won't be doing that. And same thing applies to like, if you're in downtown or Valley, you're not going to be coming to my shoes, Santa Monica or.
00:31:21
Speaker
marina de la ray because it's far away and traffic is crazy so that's why people don't end up knowing so much each other because it's so far away and people won't be coming out of their way to there because there's no public transportation pretty much but in new york city's opposite way that's why like people can reach anywhere in new york city so hence they end up knowing each other hence they are having the same circle as you do so just something to think about
Living in NYC: Growth vs. Long-Term Settling
00:31:45
Speaker
OK, so what I want to mention, I know this all might sound negative, but I want to make sure that this is as objective as possible. And these are some of the things that I have experienced. I have even heard from people. Just to think about what you want from New York City and why you're coming here. Another thing I have also heard from people, and I have also experienced myself, New York City is not necessarily a place to live, per se, or to be like, oh, I want to just spend the rest of my life here.
00:32:14
Speaker
I have never really heard anyone saying that to BH. I haven't. Most people who generally come to New York City, New York City is essentially like a bridge for your next phase in your life. So, essentially, New York is like this.
00:32:31
Speaker
maybe you're out of college or you want to find a job or something and you come here. And when you make it in New York City, and this is very, very true, good part about New York City, you can literally make it anywhere because it's so tough to be in New York City. So when you go out of New York City, you can definitely be so successful. So that's what I'm coming at this like New York City does.
00:32:53
Speaker
teach you a lot in terms of living in a shoebox and appreciating good things and some other things that you shouldn't care about, some materialistic things. But then it also comes to other things that you should think about, like how you can
00:33:10
Speaker
You know, you can make good things, you can make bad things to be a good thing, like memories and stuff. So it's very cool. And you can meet really, really good people, because like, one thing with New York City is that like, New York City is so diverse, and there's so many people coming from all over the world. And that's a good part about it, because like, you can meet people from, I don't know, like,
00:33:31
Speaker
other part of the role you're like wow this is just so amazing and you can really make good friends so that is definitely the good part about it but again it's not really the place that like you would live and i have literally heard and seen people and i even had a friend that that was like oh i'm so obsessed with new york i'm definitely gonna like live here and be here and she definitely spent like i think one or two years here then after two years she was like yeah i see what you mean like i do like new york city but it's more like a place that like
00:34:01
Speaker
I would come and go for work, but I don't want to be living here. It's just so stressful. And that's the part about it. So you definitely learn so much in terms of work ethic and everything else. But in terms of living here, it's just so loud, so stressful. There's literally no downtime. So you feel very, very stressed all the time. Hence, you always want to like
00:34:22
Speaker
take a step back and relax and it just doesn't work like that in New York City unless you get out of the New York City. So that is the part about it and you kind of want to find other places like for yourself as a home. So I wouldn't even recommend for people as I'm even getting older and realizing it is like
00:34:41
Speaker
New York City is not even a place for growing children. It's just like having a family. It's just not the place. It is very tough here, and you probably wouldn't even want your kids to be in this defense kind of environment. It's like being in an army or anything like that. You always have to protect yourself. So maybe I'm exaggerating, but I think you know what I mean. I don't think it's that fun, cool place to be in.
00:35:12
Speaker
Yeah, that's just like, I'm coming at this like, this definitely makes me feel like I am trashing on New York but like, New York has definitely taught me so much and when I was first here, I was alone and I was doing my internship. So that is one thing I would say is that like, coming to New York City alone,
00:35:30
Speaker
by yourself and you don't know anyone, you don't have a family or anything like that. It is very, very difficult because New York City can literally eat you up like the cost and like having no friends or anything like that. It can be really difficult and the worst part is that people can really take advantage of you.
00:35:48
Speaker
and starting from your landlord to your roommate and
Staying in NYC: Family, Wealth, and Home
00:35:51
Speaker
everyone else. So it's very, very difficult. And this has happened to me in the past before, like, roommates taking advantage of me, overcharging me for rent, anything like that. So it does really happen, not just happen in the movies, it does really happen in real life. So I would definitely want to mention that.
00:36:08
Speaker
And you should remember to have, I'm not saying like, oh, you don't just do things by yourself, but like, especially coming to New York City, it would be nice to have a friend or someone who knows the city to help you. Because if you're coming by yourself, you might not know so much and you might be able to, you might make too many mistakes and you might have to come, you know, go back to where you come from. So that might be difficult. But now, because I have family here,
00:36:34
Speaker
that's actually one of the reasons it's keeping me here because I have my sister here and my father here so it's very that's one of the reasons I stay here so much although I might be trashing this place so much but I really really do feel like this place feels like home to me and that's why like I love it so much but along with other sites that I don't like so much so that's what I want to mention this like um
00:36:57
Speaker
If you have a family and stuff, I could totally understand why you live here and why you're here. But like, if you are coming here for a job, maybe try it for a year or two, then you'll realize that you can definitely do this somewhere else. I have even seen people like they're coming here mostly for modeling and fashion, because like, New York City is the capital to fashion, but like now COVID, even Fashion Week is canceled. So I don't know why even people come here.
00:37:22
Speaker
So that is something to think about because unless you're a model or anything like that, but again, I'm not sure how much job you have now because of COVID. Generally, you don't have to be here unless your agency is here. So because what you're doing right now and essentially because
00:37:37
Speaker
A lot of people think that, oh, if I want to be in a fashion, I have to be in New York. Or if I want to do this, I guess at a certain extent, yes. And if you have a job literally located there. But because of the internet nowadays, you can literally do anything anywhere. So you don't necessarily have to be in a place to be successful in that industry. So that is something to think about without wasting so much money on it. Because you can literally start somewhere else. Maybe if you're going to be making so much money, millions of dollars, then you can come to New York City.
00:38:07
Speaker
One thing to say, and this might sound so, so pessimistic, but I really, really want to be real with you guys. Unless you have millions of dollars, you're not going to be enjoying New York City that much because a lot of people, especially people who live in like Upper East Side, not all of them, but like most of them, they have like, I don't know, townhouses, they have a house in Hamptons that you can go.
00:38:28
Speaker
I mean they go so they have a probably jet or something like so they have a very nice life so that's why for them it doesn't matter and that's why they live in New York City because like they don't even spend most of their time in New York City because they just go around so they have the money but unless you're that person
00:38:44
Speaker
you know, feel free to come. But otherwise, New York City can be really tough and can really eat you up. So that is something to think about. So OK, guys, so that was the end of this episode. I know it kind of like went all over the place and I didn't mention a couple of things. I did try to keep it organized. I am definitely learning. I didn't even make an outline. So I'm going to get there. But these are some of my thoughts about New York City. So at the end of the day, I definitely want to say New York City is
00:39:09
Speaker
home for me mostly because of my family. Family is something that is so so important for me and that is something actually definitely I would talk about later as just one episode itself but these are some of my thoughts and I hope you guys like this episode. Please don't forget to deliver a review and I'll see you guys next week.
