Introduction to 'Mamas Who Lead'

00:00:00
Speaker
Okay, welcome back to Mamas Who Lead. I'm your host, Laura Carafino. And around here, we believe that moms aren't just managing homes or shaping legacies. And if you've been pulled or feeling the pull in a million different directions lately from school drop-offs, late night emails, dinner on the table, oh yeah, we ah definitely need to feed our kids, right?

Chaos vs. Clarity in Leadership

00:00:24
Speaker
Actually, or actually running your business, you are not alone. But here is the truth. Leadership doesn't happen in the chaos, or maybe it kind of does, ah but it happens in the clarity.
00:00:37
Speaker
and Clarity is something you can create every single week, even those with ADHD like myself, I promise you. ah so Today, i'm going to walk you through the five decisions every mom leader should make at the start of the week.
00:00:54
Speaker
These will save your sanity, sharpen your leadership, and give you back your focus. So, Let me paint a picture, quick picture for you.

Personal Story: Living Reactively

00:01:04
Speaker
There was a season in my life where I literally lived completely reactive.
00:01:12
Speaker
I woke up sometimes by, you know, after I've hit snooze a few times, I let my inbox set the tone for the day. I was getting so many emails and I just responding at the fly.
00:01:26
Speaker
let my kids make, you know, last minute needs questions. Their last minute needs dictate my schedule. ah Like, you know, oh my gosh, i've got I didn't put their clothes out. I didn't, we're running and scrambling in the morning. and You know, and I let my business run me instead of me running it. And the result,
00:01:45
Speaker
I was constantly overwhelmed. I was constantly felt this guilt, like I was not being the mother that my children deserve. And I was just constantly second guessing everything I was doing.
00:01:57
Speaker
And just one Monday morning, i hit my breaking point. You know, I sat in my car. at the school pickup line and I thought, this is not working. I'm in my pajamas still.
00:02:08
Speaker
This is unacceptable. If I have to get out like I had to do that day in my pajamas to shut the door and the whole world see me in my pajamas and my house shoes, just that is just unacceptable.

Five Key Decisions for Mom Leaders

00:02:21
Speaker
you know And that's when I started You know, experimenting like with these small weekly decisions, and those decisions are what is putting me back in the driver's seat.
00:02:32
Speaker
And so now I'm going to share those exact five decisions with you today. So my first decision, and that is what gets my yes and my no this week.
00:02:43
Speaker
I know, crazy, simple as that sounds, leadership is less about what you do and more about what you decide not to do, Okay. you know In previous episodes, I've talked about delegating tasks and you know focusing on income-producing activities and saving your time for those activities and delegating the rest, right?
00:03:06
Speaker
So every Sunday night or Monday morning, write down three to five things that is going to get your full yes this week. Everything else, it's either delegated, delayed, or deleted, okay?
00:03:18
Speaker
if you can do that focus on making that small decision there decision two is where my time actually goes ah this is a big thing because it is so easy to get sidetracked with social media you're just scrolling especially on tick tock if you have tick tock oh my gosh that was a time suck for me and when i started monitoring my time i'm like oh my goodness i am spending entirely way too much time on social media And I need to put back my focus, get my life back. This is...
00:03:49
Speaker
social media is not where I need to be spending my time. and need to use my time effectively efficiently there and make it be intentional with everything that I do when it comes to social media.
00:04:04
Speaker
So time leaks will kill your leadership. So to so decide in advance where your hours go, i am a huge advocate for time blocking.
00:04:14
Speaker
If you have not, read the book, The Miracle Morning. i highly recommend it. I do this in my 90 day run. I recommend, uh, reading, a Miracle Morning, go on Amazon, get it, get it on audible.
00:04:29
Speaker
If you don't have time to read, you can at least, you know, while you're sitting in the car line, listen to this book. It's going to change your life. And once I started implementing, um ah skills and things that are mentioned in that book, it started helping

Time Management and Self-Care

00:04:45
Speaker
me. And that one other thing is really monitoring where my time goes and decide in advance where I'm going to spend my time.
00:04:53
Speaker
So the this might mean blocking off two hours for content creation, 30 minutes for intentional family time each evening, um a white space for your own rest. Yes, you need to calendar block your time for your self-care, you need to put it in there because if you don't, you're going fill it and you're just going to work and work and work and burn yourself out and you don't need that. so And most importantly, if you don't decide, that is still a decision and everything is going to everything else is going to decide for you. So decide where your time goes.
00:05:27
Speaker
You're in control over it. You're allowed to implement boundaries and put that in into your calendar and stick to it. See how it's going to help you. you know Put those calendar blocks for social creation, um content creation, ah social reply, you know replying to DMs, emails, newsletter newsletter writing.
00:05:51
Speaker
Time for a family, you know, keep, you know, homework time. When kids come home from school, you want to help with homework, lock that into your calendar and it will change your life. I promise you and get the book Miracle Morning and read it.
00:06:04
Speaker
Okay. Decision number three, who needs my leadership? Simple as that. You would think everybody, you know, especially if you're running teams and organizations, everybody wants you and needs you, right?
00:06:16
Speaker
But as moms and as leaders, people are always going to be pulling on you in every which direction, right? And instead of spreading yourself thin, you know, choose the two to three people or groups who most need your leadership this week.
00:06:31
Speaker
It could be your kids, it could be your team, or one specific client may need you. Lead deeply instead of everywhere shallow. And so ah prioritize your time, calendar block, so that you can put in those people into your calendar based on priorities.

Setting Success Metrics

00:06:49
Speaker
All right, and decision four is how will I measure success this week? I know this is where we're going to get real. Success is not answering hundreds of DMs or checking off 47 tasks.
00:07:04
Speaker
I know that does really do something for my brain, my ADHD brain, like checking off tasks. But I want you to decide what true success looks like this week for you.
00:07:17
Speaker
Maybe it's recording two podcast episodes. If you have your podcast, maybe it's having dinner as a family three times. That can be hard when you're navigating all the sports, right?
00:07:29
Speaker
And schools and activities. But making that a focus and a priority That could be success for you this week. Maybe it's finally resting on a Sunday instead of doing all the tasks.
00:07:42
Speaker
Whatever it is, define how you will measure success this week before the week defines you and you it's gotten away from you and you're like, where did this go? What what did I do this week?

Celebrating Wins and Building Momentum

00:07:53
Speaker
so decide how you will measure your success for this week and then decision number five is what will i celebrate so leadership is also about celebrating celebration without celebrating the grind let me say that again look at my my words got jumbled here leadership without celebration becomes a grind Decide in advance what you'll celebrate.
00:08:21
Speaker
It could be your small wins in your business, a moment of patience with your kids, um or everybody made their bed before they went to school this morning. i know that's a huge win for me.
00:08:34
Speaker
you know ah and Or you know maybe a team member of yours has hit a huge goal they had set for themselves. Celebration is going to create momentum, it's going to create excitement, and it's also going to remind you why you're doing this in the first place. and so Celebrate all the wins within your business and in your home life as well.
00:08:54
Speaker
and It's just going to get you excited. It's going to keep you moving forward.

Benefits of Proactive Leadership

00:09:00
Speaker

00:09:18
