Foundation and Motivation in Entrepreneurship

00:02:12
Speaker
Welcome back to Mamas Who Lead. I am your host, Laura Carafino, and if you're new here, this show is where purpose-driven moms come to learn how to build businesses that honor God, serve others, and create the freedom you've been craving.
00:02:28
Speaker
Last week, we talked about the lies keeping you stuck. This week, we're talking about what to do once you're unstuck. Because starting a business as a mom isn't just because you have isn't just about having a good idea.
00:02:41
Speaker
It's about creating the foundation that can weather storms of entrepreneurship because there will be storms. Whether you realize it or not, there will be. and while you're going through that, you're also managing the beautiful chaos of motherhood.
00:02:56
Speaker
So grab your coffee, find a quiet corner, and let's dive in. So grab your coffee, find a quiet corner, and let's dive into the five things you absolutely must have in place before you decide to hang out your open for business sign. The first non-negotiable is having a crystal clear why.
00:03:15
Speaker
That goes deeper than just wanting to make money. Now, don't get me wrong. Wanting financial freedom is completely valid. But if that's your only why, you're going to quit the first time things get hard. And trust me, they will get hard.
00:03:30
Speaker
Life happens. So your why needs to be so compelling that when and your toddler is having a meltdown, while you're trying to record a podcast, when you get your first negative review, and believe me, you will get them.
00:03:43
Speaker
um What's the saying? You haven't made it unless you have haters. Yeah. ah um Believe me, i have plenty of them. But when you have to choose between a client call and your kid's soccer game, your why is going to pull you through, right?
00:04:00
Speaker
And that does kind of happen sometimes. And when I started my business, my surface level why was wanting more income, flexibility as a military spouse and also kind of reclaiming my identity because I went from a career woman, you know, have very driven, had goals and trying to figure out like, you know, where I'm going in that direction.
00:04:25
Speaker
and then I became stay at home mom, which in itself was absolutely amazing that had the opportunity to do that. But I also kind of missed that outside connection that I wasn't receiving.
00:04:40
Speaker
But when I was dealing with all of that, my deeper why was I was tired of watching incredible women dim their lights because that they thought they had to choose between being a good mom and pursuing their calling. Now I have this deep belief that we are all called to do something incredible.
00:05:01
Speaker
We all have a purpose. And wanted to prove that you could build something incredibly meaningful while raising babies and following your spouse all over around the world if you have to. so that deeper why of mine has carried me through every single challenge, every pivot, and every season of doubt because there there are plenty of those.
00:05:27
Speaker
So here are a few questions that you can ask yourself when you're trying to discover your why. What injustice in the world makes you angry? know that's crazy, right? Just think about that, that deeper, what injustice in the world makes you really angry?
00:05:44
Speaker
what transs What transformation have you experienced that others need? What legacy do you want to leave your children? How do you want to be remembered? That's a big one.
00:05:56
Speaker
Like, What impact do you want to make? What do you want people to say? you know, i hired, um, actually no, i had a guest. She, if you go back and listen, um, it was with Anna Grace.
00:06:11
Speaker
And if you go and listen to her, she talks about this, about writing your, I believe it's called opus and it's like an obituary and Like, I know it's kind it sounds kind of morbid, but I love the way she puts it. So if you go back and listen to that episode, it's incredible. And she talks about this, like how you want to be remembered. So prepare that, you know, your, i believe it's called Opus, like go and go and listen to that episode. It was an incredible episode. And so just the main key point ah is how do you want to be remembered? Yeah.
00:06:48
Speaker
ah So my action step for you is to write your why statement and put it somewhere where you'll see it daily. When the going gets tough, this becomes kind of your North Star.
00:07:01
Speaker
And so write it down so you can see it and it just will guide you when things get kind of tough.

Establishing Boundaries and Support Systems

00:07:07
Speaker
right, the second non-negotiable is having unshakable boundaries that protect your family first.
00:07:14
Speaker
So, and I say this because I see this happen. Moms start businesses to have more flexibility and freedom, but then they end up working twenty four seven because they haven't established clear boundaries.
00:07:27
Speaker
They are answering calls, emails, all during dinner, taking client calls during bedtime, I'm working weekends because I'm building something important. Have you ever heard that?
00:07:38
Speaker
Believe me, i have been i've been guilty of that. That's kind of how I got in this phase of ah burnout. And I ended up resigning from a seven-figure yearly income.
00:07:54
Speaker
Because of I was in this burnout and I saw what it was doing for my cheing to my family. Money was fabulous, but i wasn't I didn't have in place the structures that were needed.
00:08:06
Speaker
So, mom, if your business is destroying your family, it's not a business worth building. And that's why I walked away. One of the many reasons I walked away. So...
00:08:18
Speaker
Here is my boundary framework, okay? Sacred time, dinner time, bedtime stories, Sunday family. Those are completely off-limit.
00:08:29
Speaker
Now, i we I try to respect the the Sabbath and depending on whenever you celebrate it or um recognize it, you know, a Saturday or a Sunday.
00:08:40
Speaker
And those are my times that are completely off with my family. I prefer not to work on the weekends because sometimes that's That's my choice. That's my time.
00:08:51
Speaker
That's my time with my family. That's my kids' soccer time when my kids, I'm at their sporting events. It is their time. It is, I set up those boundaries. You know, I have certain systems where people schedule calls with me and my calendar is already pre-filled. So whenever they go to automatically sign up for a time on my website, it it gives them my availability everything.
00:09:16
Speaker
within those time strength those time constraints. So they have to find a time that fits their schedule and that fits into my schedule that I've already prearranged availability. So...
00:09:30
Speaker
Communication boundaries is another part of my framework. You know, I don't check email after 6 p.m. or before 8 a.m. I just don't. You know, sometimes I do, but I don't make a habit of it. Like, it is not in my routine to do it.
00:09:45
Speaker
Again, that is family time. That is when I'm doing dinner. or sports or um you know bedtime stories, bath time, I'm preoccupied with my family.
00:09:56
Speaker
So those clear boundaries stick and people respect those. There was a time when i was taking calls when I was giving baths to my children that it is just unacceptable. So I have learned and now I'm sharing what I do now.
00:10:12
Speaker
Physical boundaries is another part of my framework. you know I have designated workspaces that I can leave at the end of the day. I have an office. you know, I keep my work in here. Or, you know, if you don't have a office, have a designated area in your home where you can leave it at the end of the day and or close it up, pack it up, put it away. Like if you it's your kitchen table, ah believe me, there's been times where my office was my kitchen table.
00:10:41
Speaker
So that is how I've me and You know, i close it up because we're going to use the the table for evening dinner and I'm not going to have my stuff all over the place. So I'm able to put it away and walk walk away from the day and when I'm ready to come back, will pull it out.
00:11:01
Speaker
Seasonal boundaries. Okay. this is This is another good one, okay? Because during and like school breaks, family vacations, I'm gonna scale back or I'm gonna have everything automated so I'm not doing stuff.
00:11:16
Speaker
I'm not actively doing. This comes back to batch recording batch scheduling, you know, using the tools that are out there and they're inexpensive tools too, you know?
00:11:29
Speaker
You can have a CRM that does auto responding. you know You already have your pre-planned for the year, your content, what keywords you're using for trigger words, your ah freebie offers, your webinars, everything automated. it if Once you get to that point, having that, it's where you are able to scale, where you're able to do these vacations and have those clear seasonal boundaries that we need to have in place.
00:11:59
Speaker
And if you're just starting out, that's still easy. It's still easy to do with batch recording and batch scheduling. Facebook allows you to schedule. Instagram allows you to schedule.
00:12:11
Speaker
You can, um you know, batch record your podcast episodes and whatever platform you use allows scheduling too. So you don't have to do anything. You have, you can set it and forget it until you are back and ready to focus on your business.
00:12:26
Speaker
So the truth about boundaries is good clients respect your boundaries. Good teammates respect your boundaries. Clients who don't respect your boundaries aren't clients you want anyway.
00:12:38
Speaker
yeah So when you model these healthy boundaries, you give other moms for permission to do the exact same. And you're also sharing and showing that to your children. and so your children are always watching and they are learning from you.
00:12:53
Speaker
So when you set these healthy boundaries, it ah teaches them to also prioritize their family.
00:13:02
Speaker
So. Write down your top five family priorities, create create boundaries around them that protect them and communicate these boundaries clearly to anyone you work with.
00:13:13
Speaker
Okay. Like send it out an email, send it, to you know, in your newsletter, I'm going on vacation or, you know, if you need to get with me or have a VA that's set up to, you know, when you get to that point for scalability, um, that can auto respond and take client needs while you're away. Okay.
00:13:31
Speaker
Now, so the third non-negotiable is having a support system that actually supports your dreams. And this might be the hardest one to hear, but you need to evaluate the people in your inner circle.
00:13:50
Speaker
Yes. You know, I heard a training the other day. i was listening to someone speak and Oh, I can't remember who it was, but, um you know, your inner circle, you know, circle, but then who is in your corner, right?
00:14:07
Speaker
You know, who is your and in your corner? So evaluate those individuals. Are they cheering you on? Are they subtly or not so subtly undermining your confidence?
00:14:21
Speaker
You know, does things happen every time this person... um is interacting with you, does it boost your emotions? Does it elevate your feelings? Or do you seem to doubt yourself more after conversations with this individual? The the dream killers I want you to watch out for the person who says, that's nice, honey.
00:14:44
Speaker
You have that person who says, that's nice. Like when you share your business goals or the friend who constantly asks, when are you going to get that real job? You know, not supportive. I don't, you know, how many people were like, whenever I first transitioned from working at the Pentagon to be a stay at home mom. And I started looking for jobs and applying. And at one point I had literally went on and um, about 39 interviews and I couldn't get a job.
00:15:15
Speaker
And that was the first time in my life because every, every, job interview in my past I'd ever went on, I received multiple offers at a time. Like I'm always, I was always trying to evaluate like which one I was going to decide on.
00:15:29
Speaker
But then whenever I started moving, there was other things that I was dealing with because I was living in these smaller towns and, uh, yes, the,
00:15:44
Speaker
I mean, I have an incredible diverse background that not many other people have. And i realized it wasn't you know, my lack of experience, I had incredible experience working with top level military and political leaders that I was getting the i was overqualified for these positions, even though I just wanted a job to give me, me, me time and a little bit of money here and there. um And so i you know, went down that route and where that real job couldn't be achieved
00:16:25
Speaker
I had to think out of the box and then that thinking out of the box has got me to where I am today, you know, and it paid me more than I can ever imagine, um that I would have made in a real job.
00:16:40
Speaker
I mean, it would have taken me 20 years.
00:16:45
Speaker
i mean, uh, more than that, because I, at the time I was only making about 130,000 when i worked in a real job and I've made multiple seven figures and I couldn't, if I just stayed at that one, like I have made more in a very short amount of time than I would have ever made in at least 20, 20, 30 years at that one salary. So that real job, if that friend is always asking when you're getting the real job,
00:17:20
Speaker
need to kind of question that relationship. um The family member who makes comments about you neglecting your kids. Those are dream killers because you're not, you you know you're not neglecting.
00:17:35
Speaker
So maybe limit that interaction with that individual, right? the sepa The spouse who supports you in theory but complains about every sacrifice that you have to make.
00:17:50
Speaker
To achieve your dream. but That's a dream killer. So the people, you need people in your life who are going to support your dream, right? That are going to help you build your dream.
00:18:00
Speaker
That believe in your own vision even when you doubt yourself. So maybe you've shared that dream and that vision with your spouse and they're like, you know, I believe in you. Let's make this happen, right?
00:18:12
Speaker
You want people who are going to be so celebrating your wins no matter how small they are. You know, you picked up that the phone and you called that person and they joined your team or they helped you with the graphic or they helped you with your social media presence. People who offer practical help, not just like empty encouragement. People who challenge you to think bigger not smaller.
00:18:37
Speaker
People who understand the unique challenges of mom entrepreneurship. That's a big one. You need to be in those circles with those people who are doing that and helping you and supporting you that are uplifting your vision.
00:18:51
Speaker
and And where are you going to find these people? Right? You're like, Laura, okay, that sounds great. Where am I going to find those? Because I'm suck um'm stuck around people who are killing my dreams.
00:19:03
Speaker
So how do you find the people who are going to support that vision that dream? So online communities. of, you know, Christian women entrepreneurs, local networking groups, moms groups.
00:19:17
Speaker
Back in the day when I had my littles, there was groups called mops. Find that usually in your local church. Mastermind groups in your industry. Join them. Network.
00:19:28
Speaker
Church small groups. Focused on like purpose and calling, professional coaching and mentorship relationships. And, um,
00:19:39
Speaker
I have a free community called the Leaders Lounge on Facebook. Join that. Connect with amazing women in there. You know, share, post, ask questions.
00:19:51
Speaker
That is a free community you're welcome to join too as well. I usually have that group linked in the show notes. So join that. So I ask that you audit your inner circle, identify who truly supports you, supports your dreams, and who might be holding you back.
00:20:10
Speaker
And then actively seek out new relationships with people who will champion your success.

Managing Chaos with Systems and Planning

00:20:17
Speaker
Now, negotiable non-negotiable number four is having a simple system for managing the chaos of mom life.
00:20:26
Speaker
Plus your business life. That can be really challenging. And you cannot wing it. I mean, winging it will only, you can only expect to succeed for so long when you're just winging it. Believe me, I have.
00:20:39
Speaker
I ah was the master at winging it. Literally. didn't prepare for stuff because not that I didn't want to, it's because I literally didn't have time. So I would wing it. but Like I know then the information well enough, I can wing it.
00:20:56
Speaker
Or I can keep flying by the seat of my pants with my social media stuff. no No, no, You're going to get overwhelmed and burned out pretty quickly. You need systems at work, even when you're sleep deprived, because if you have a newborn, you know how sleep deprived you are. Even when the kids get sick, you're going be up checking on the, you know, and even when life throws curve balls, because it will.
00:21:21
Speaker
um I was thrown a huge curve ball when I got and when I came down with a debilitating illness and i had to set up systems for my team to operate when I was going to be away. Like literally I was away in a foreign country and a hospital for multiple months.
00:21:41
Speaker
ah So I needed systems in place so that my business would run continuously without me. And so I made that work, right? You're going to need a chaos management system.
00:21:56
Speaker
And I am going to, I talk about this all the time and I've talked about this today. Time blocking, block specific times for your business, your mom duties, your personal care, plug it all in into your calendar so that you know when you're working and when you're not and when it's family and nobody can interrupt that town time.
00:22:20
Speaker
That is boundaries. you know, batch similar tasks together, like all content creation on Tuesdays, all client calls on Wednesdays or so on and so forth.
00:22:31
Speaker
You know, protect your most productive hours for your most important work. I work more productively first thing in the morning.
00:22:42
Speaker
And so those are my hours that I get the most done. So I protect that time. And then I have my, um I have other hours for podcast recording, for ah content creation, and so forth. Like everything is in my calendar.
00:23:00
Speaker
So have a family command center will help. One shared calendar that includes everyone's activities. So I have one calendar. We have, we utilize apple calendar. And so it syncs up with all of our phones for our our kids scheduling. So I make sure everybody's aware what everyone is doing.
00:23:22
Speaker
um Meal planning. That's a key. You need that. It also helps you save and budget. Like we, I will have an episode on finances and here soon with our credible guest speaker.
00:23:37
Speaker
We've done some in the past too with another incredible financial advisor. um But meal planning will help you save money too. So you're not always ordering out and you're going to stay eating healthy as well.
00:23:52
Speaker
So if you're managing your weight, eating um healthy and focus on that. And planning
00:24:00
Speaker
We'll keep your sanity. have a so and Having a simple chore system that involves your whole family gives kids a sense of responsibility.
00:24:11
Speaker
um It teaches them so much in life as well. And having that in your family command center is key too. have emergency backup plans for child care. You will need that.
00:24:25
Speaker
A neighbor, a friend, whatever, always have emergency child backup child care. Now your next system you're going to want is business systems. Automated email sequences for new leads.
00:24:36
Speaker
have a I have an email system for my newsletter. I have Um, I had an old email list that I was using and I have a whole email so sequence to warm up that. I have a new leads email system that comes in.
00:24:51
Speaker
have a email sequence for every single thing that I put out. Um, and it plugs them into the flow of my, my newsletter as well. So business system.
00:25:04
Speaker
automated email so sequence is needed. Now, if you're just starting now and you don't really have that, you can still do it the old way. ah You can plan your emails out in Google Sheets, an Excel doc, or good old basic pen and paper.
00:25:21
Speaker
Plan it out so you know and you keep track. You definitely want to keep track of your leads. So once you get and a level that you can invest at a good c r m which is a system that manages your customers and leads that come in um you can You can do that, but definitely that is key.
00:25:43
Speaker
You need to have templates for common client communications. um Again, welcome emails, orders, appreciation, just common templates that are easy plug and play.
00:25:58
Speaker
A simple project management system. So if you are in um network marketing, you know new you know there's a sales cycle, what your company does, have a system for how you're going to manage your promotions of those, and new lead generation, where you're finding new leads,
00:26:20
Speaker
Just a simple project management system. You're going to have to have a regular backup of organization of digital files. so You need to, you know, folders and systems. I mean, I'm not the best at that, but I do have a system. I have folders for everything that I'm in. My courses, my podcasts, episodes, guests. There's a systematic system for it.
00:26:45
Speaker
So... um I like to also utilize Trello for everything. If you don't know what Trello is, check it out. It's life changer. um It's just a good way to see a visualization of managing your everything.
00:27:04
Speaker
I have like one for my podcast, my content. It's a great planning tool. i And highly recommend having a Sunday planning session. Every Sunday, I spend about 30 minutes reviewing the upcoming week, identifying potential challenges and making adjustments to my schedule. It's kind of like a quick overview.
00:27:27
Speaker
Okay, this is what I need to do. This is what this week looks like. Let's get this done. So... my action step that I would recommend for you to do this week is to choose one area of chaos in your life and create a simple system around that to manage it, you know, and you could just start small and build up from there.

Faith and Purpose in Business

00:27:49
Speaker
Now the fifth non non negotiable, and this is the most important non negotiable is having a faith foundation that keeps you grounded in who you are and whose you are.
00:28:04
Speaker
entrepreneurship will test your faith like nothing else. And there will be seasons of abundance and seasons of drought, or I like to say the Job season.
00:28:16
Speaker
Um, Believe me, I have been there in that Job season and it is not fun, but I can tell you, you know, there, there will be times when you question everything and times when you feel unstoppable through it all.
00:28:33
Speaker
You just need an anchor. And for me, that has been, my faith in Christ and, And what I can recommend by my faith practices for businesses are I start every workday with a prayer and a scripture reading, you know, adapt and do what works best for you.
00:28:54
Speaker
um i regularly ask God for wisdom and my business decisions. And, you know, and sometimes they're, you know, I think this is where God's leading me and it ends up Not, but I think that like that choice has always been, um there's a lesson to learn in and things. And so i feel like we're allowed to go through seasons where we're learning and growing from that I also tithe from my business income, not just my personal income, my business income. And so I highly suggest doing something to that nature.
00:29:34
Speaker
And I also seek godly counsel from mentors who share my values. a You know, having that good circle, you know, when I was talking about the circle, really having a good godly women in your life that can pray with you it is um necessary.

Speaker
i also regularly evaluate whether my business practices align with my faith too, because sometimes we can get out of alignment and that. And so just regularly checking that and applying biblical principles for your business. So, and those are, you know, stewardship, you know, everything I have is God's and I'm managing it for his glory his glory and service.
00:30:26
Speaker
You know, my business exists to serve others, not just make money. I'm not here just to make money, even though that is great. Um, I'm able to do so much more with the money that I receive and,
00:30:40
Speaker
Um, and that sole purpose is to serve others. It's purpose, you know, purpose, having a purpose to serve others for Christ. Integrity. i do my business with honesty, even, even when it costs me, you know, um, you know, you, if you're coming from a place of honesty, nothing can, you know, be held against you, right?
00:31:09
Speaker
Like, operate with integrity. So rest. And like I said, I honor, I do honor the Sabbath and I try to model healthy rhythms for my family, focus on my family.
00:31:21
Speaker
you know, my family's time is my family's time.
00:31:27
Speaker
Generosity, and another biblical principle and success is measured, measured by impact, not just income.
00:31:38
Speaker
So I try to give away lot and help others. So there will be times when doing the right thing costs you money. Believe me.
00:31:53
Speaker
I walked away from it money. and when and then also when you have to, you know, fire a profitable client because they don't align with your values.
00:32:05
Speaker
You know, i
00:32:09
Speaker
I believe that um we are, wet we're not, we don't have, we shouldn't work with everyone, right?
00:32:21
Speaker
And this goes down to, you know, also talking about your target market, right? Who you're going to work with. You don't want to work with everyone because whenever it doesn't align with your values, it's going to cause you headache, right?
00:32:34
Speaker
And so, I have refused to work with people that don't align with my values. And when that becomes clear, be like, okay, great. um You know, I wish you the best.
00:32:47
Speaker
This just doesn't align with who I am and what I represent. So when you have to turn down opportunities that will compromise your integrity, these moments define who you are as a faith-driven entrepreneur.
00:33:03
Speaker
It's not easy to do, but When you start doing that and establishing those clear your boundaries and those non-negotiables, you are going to really start thriving.
00:33:18
Speaker
So establish a daily spiritual practice that will sustain you through all of your ups and downs of entrepreneurship and be sure to write down your core values and ah commit to never compromising them for profit.

Conclusion and Encouragement for Mom Entrepreneurs

00:33:35
Speaker
That is key. And also, you know, I just had an incredible conversation and with a podcast guest and her show is going to come on in a couple of weeks, but she always talks to her children about their core values And that is something that I'm going to start implementing and asking them and reminding them as well, these same principles, to do not comprement compromise on your core values for profit and to always write down your values and ask yourself, does what I'm doing align with these core values?
00:34:17
Speaker
So...
00:34:21
Speaker
Here's the beautiful truth here. When you have these five non non-negotiables in place, you're not just starting a business. You're going to be building a legacy, right?
00:34:33
Speaker
Making impact and you're showing your children what it looks like to pursue God's kind calling with wisdom, intentionality, And you're creating a model for others' moms who may be watching you as well to see if it's really possible to have both family and purpose.
00:34:53
Speaker
And i I highly believe that is possible because I've been doing it. And I know many other women that are doing it as well. So you're building something that can weather any storm because it's built on the right foundations.
00:35:09
Speaker
So here is some homework for you guys. Write down, day I want you to, day one through two, write right your deeper why statement and post it where you can see it daily, right?
00:35:25
Speaker
Whether, you know, if you're sitting down on a computer, write it on sticky note, put it wherever. Put it on your home screen, on your phone so that you can see it every time you go to unlock it.
00:35:38
Speaker
Just somewhere you're going to see it every every day, right? And then day three for four, I want you to establish your non-negotiable boundaries and then communicate them with your family.
00:35:51
Speaker
Establish like your boundaries, whatever they are, they're non-negotiables and stick to it. Day five through six of this next week, audit your support system and identify where you need to make those changes.
00:36:05
Speaker
Who's in your life that you may need to put up boundaries with and not speak with as often, or even put a boundary where you're not going to talk about your business with them. Simple as that.
00:36:19
Speaker
Or even, you know, if they're not supporting your dreams and your vision, then that may be someone that you can put it in a different category or someone that you're not going to go to for support for your business.
00:36:34
Speaker
And then day seven, create one simple system to manage an area of chaos in your life. Not knowing where you're going,
00:36:44
Speaker
During the day, to your calendar, ah time block, emails out of, you're not sure who's go getting what, keep track of your your leads, your customers, establish an email sequence, sequence whatever it may be.
00:36:59
Speaker
Just create one simple system to manage that chaos. And then daily, I want you to establish daily faith practices that will anchor you as you build.
00:37:12
