Hello everybody, we're here at the time of year where very often all sense of routine and purposeful action grind to a halt to make way for lethargy, overconsumption, ill-advised holiday specials of your usual favourite weekly shows and cringe-worthy planned group fun. And who are we at Enough of the Falafel to question the sacred ways of the tradition? So, I'm Anthony, I am joined by Dominic. Hello, hello, hello. I'm joined by Paul. Hello.
00:00:32
Speaker
I'm joined by Kate. Hello. And I'm joined by Julie. Hello. And we are here to bring you the third annual Big Fat Vegan Quiz of the Year. Woo, woo, woo, yeah.

History of the Quiz

00:00:47
Speaker
So everybody, this is not the first time we've done this. We have done episode 15 and episode 127, which were also recorded for you and released on the 25th of December to give you a bit of festive quizzing. So if you haven't listened to those, you've got two other quizzes you can listen to and participate in whilst we have got Dominic, Paul, Kate and Julie, who are going to be participating live with me. This recording, you can play along at the same time if you want, or you can just enjoy listening to these four making fools of themselves. It's going to be a mixture of different genres. It's going to be broadly vegan related. Some of it might relate to our Enough of the Falafel podcasts.
00:01:30
Speaker
Some of it might relate to the last 12 months or so, and there might be the occasional thing in there that is just completely random so let's introduce our contributors we don't normally introduce ourselves on enough of the falafel shows we normally let our talking do the introductions for us but let's learn a little bit about each of the folks Dominic can we come to you first how are you this Sunday evening as we record with just 11 sleeps until Christmas oh I'm really well, thank you.

Dominic's Segment

00:02:01
Speaker
um Yeah, my name is Dominic. I am a poet who travels around a lot. I'm just a back in Manchester where I live from the Lake District. I've been saying my verse up there and I'm a person who loves overeating, not just at Christmas, but at all times of the year.
00:02:19
Speaker
Excellent. That is a very excellent hobby. Now, for the first time on our festive quizzes, we have given each of our contestants a specialist subject, very much like the quiz show Mastermind. So Dominic, I've got three questions to ask you on your specialist subject. This isn't going to add to the total, but this is going to help us decide which team goes first. So are you ready for your specialist subject?
00:02:47
Speaker
Oh my word, diving right in. Okay, I am ready. Let's do it. Okay, Dominic, your specialist subject is Sonic the Hedgehog. Question one, what is the name of Sonic's best friend who is a blue hedgehog like him and often helps him on adventures in the comics and games?
00:03:06
Speaker
Who's a blue hedgehog like him? Are you sure? Maybe not. sure I might not be sure. You're you're the expert. who Who's his friend who helps him out on the adventures in comics and games? His his friend is a fox. His real name is Miles Prowler, but he's better known as Tails the Fox. Is that the answer you've got? That is the answer I have got. a For the blue blue herring there. Question two. Yeah.
00:03:32
Speaker
ah yeah In the original 1991 Sonic the Hedgehog game for the Sega Genesis, what is the main goal of each level? To defeat the evil Doctor Robotnik who's imprisoned all the little animals.
00:03:50
Speaker
that That is what I've got. I've also got another evil Doctor sounding name. and He's also known as Dr. Eggman. That's his alter ego. Yeah. Nice one. You've got all the knowledge. You're you're too two on Third question for the clean sweep. Which character first introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a rival hedgehog who can also run at supersonic speeds? Yeah.
00:04:14
Speaker
In Sonic the Hedgehog 3. That's what my question says. So you're calling all of these friends hedgehogs. So Tails from question one is a fox. the The character in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is an echidna.
00:04:25
Speaker
And I believe you're referring to Knuckles. ah yeah I am. I've got the word echidna written down too. You can tell that I have no idea about any one specialist subject. but You've done something.
00:04:36
Speaker
Super well, Anthony, super well. you but I think Sonic might have been one of my first steps towards veganism because it's so sweet, like freeing all the little animals from the people. So, yeah, good questions.
00:04:50
Speaker
and Nice. Well, well done you. You didn't just answer three questions. You were outfoxed the incorrect questions and still came up with the answers. Well, Dominic is heading up our punks team This evening, Dominic is a self-confessed punk fan and joining him on the Punks team is Paul.

Paul's Segment

00:05:08
Speaker
Paul, how are you doing today? I'm doing all right. I'm not sure how punk I am, but I'll take the i'll take the label because it sounds cool cooler than me.
00:05:15
Speaker
ah Yeah, I'm good. I took it from a ah a time when Dominic told me that you and him listened in your house to vegan punk music. it was ah you it was a bit a pun Yeah, and yeah no there was some punk stuff and metal. So yeah, I'll take that. That's such a...
00:05:29
Speaker
that's That's good enough for me, yeah. No, I'm alright this evening. I've um just, as you know, earlier on, Ant, when we spoke, I've just um had ah another foster cat brought to me this afternoon. ah She's called Kathy and she's got three legs and she's very scared, but I'm um in the lounge with her and just waiting to see if she's going to pop her head out at some point. And she's the sister to my other cat that I've had for little while, Hal. um So yeah, I'm just sort of ah keeping an eye on them simultaneously at the moment.
00:05:55
Speaker
Nice. Paul the foster cat daddy. that that This cat is just going to think that all you do is record vegan podcasts. This is the second one we've recorded today. It's how I i how i use the meaning to kind of like the household, basically. so um Yeah. Yeah. Well, what ah what a nice touch. Well, um Dominic has put the pressure on here with three on three. For his specialist subject, Paul, this is your opportunity to consolidate the punk's team's strong start with your specialist subject, synth music of the 1980s. Here we go for your three questions. Which 1980s synth pop band was known for their iconic music videos feating a featuring abstract visuals and the hit song Sweet Dreams? a Youth Mix.
00:06:40
Speaker
Very good. Question two, which 1981 album by Gary Newman is considered a landmark in electronic and synth pop music featuring the hit Cars? Now, oh God, it's not Telecon, is I thought it was the early one. Is it Telecon or is it, I'll say Telecon.
00:06:56
Speaker
What I've got written down here, Paul, is the pleasure principle. Yeah, I got the wrong one. Yeah, sorry. Yeah, yeah, yeah. yeah that's okay I knew I wanted to jump in there. It's okay. You're just showing you're human. This is good. Your new foster cat will like your humility. Question three, which Canadian band had a major 1983 synth pop hit with the song. Don't forget me when I'm gone. Flipping hell.
00:07:24
Speaker
You know, I don't know that. It doesn't look like it's a very special subject to me. No, well, i've I've enjoyed it. It looks like Dominic is bouncing around. Maybe he'll know. You know what? I don't know. was just bouncing around at Paul going, yeah, that just made me chuckle. I don't know this one. I don't know. Who is it? I don't know. I've got Glass Tiger written down here. so I faked you. was way that's That's hard.
00:07:47
Speaker
That's hard. ah Kudos for for um for giving it a go. All the same, Paul. So ah for the Punks team, we've got four out of six for your specialist subjects. So we'll see how our other two contestants do on their specialist subject to work out who goes first. Let's come to Kate first. Kate is heading up the athletes team as a vegan runner.

Kate's Segment

00:08:08
Speaker
How were you this evening, Kate?
00:08:09
Speaker
Yeah, I'm great, thank you. um i did go for a little run this morning. yeah I've been eating birthday food leftovers all day and actually most of yesterday as well. So, because it was my daughter's birthday a couple of days ago and we've still got loads cake and yummy stuff like that. We gave her a really fantastic ah spread of gorgeous looking and tasty vegan food. yay That sounds delicious. By the time this show goes out, I will have had my birthday and I've been promised a vegan Battenberg cake from Alex. So that has got me excited for that in a few days time. Right, Kate, are you ready for your specialist subject? Yes, very Mrs. Hyacinth bouquet, isn't it? It's certainly departure from 1980s synth music and Sonic the Hedgehog. Your chosen subject is edible flowers. Question one. Which edible flower is often used in herbal teas and has a calming, slightly sweet flavour?
00:09:10
Speaker
I'm guessing that might be chamomile. That is what I've got here. Yeah, correct. Oh, good. No shame. I have one point. Hooray. Very good. Very good. Question two. Nasturtium flowers are not only edible, but also have a distinct flavour. And I would add, so do the leaves. What flavour are they known for? How could you describe the flavour of a nasturtium flower?
00:09:32
Speaker
I guess you'd say they're peppery. that what you've got there? That's what I've got written down, which came from my source and I've eaten many myself, so I can say yes to that.
00:09:43
Speaker
And, you know, the little um seed pods, you can eat them as well. And they're really nice. And I've actually fermented them. They're brilliant. Oh, have you? Yeah, I pickled some last year. They were yeah very delicious. Goodness, this turning into a conversation rather than a quiz. Let's get back on Anthony. Question three, Kate.
00:09:59
Speaker
Violet flowers are often candied or used in salads, but which vitamin are they particularly noted for containing? Oh, my word. Vitamin.
00:10:10
Speaker
Gosh, you've got me there. ah I don't suppose it's vitamin C. good grief. ah I don't know. Vitamin C. Kate, you've got three out of three. Vitamin is Really? I've never heard of that.
00:10:26
Speaker
apparently apparently well you've got things off to a good start there which puts the pressure on our final contestant but this is the reigning champion of the enough of the falafel uh big fat vegan quiz so there's no one gonna be feeling ah that julie is gonna mess this up surely not julie how are you doing you feeling the pressure yes i really am yeah absolutely Oh,

Julie's Segment

00:10:51
Speaker
goodness. And just generally coming into the quiz as the reigning champion, does that does that give you confidence or is that a ah weight of expectation that you've been wrestling with all year?
00:11:01
Speaker
Oh, I think it's definitely the latter. Definitely the weight of expectation. Last year I had done quite a number of shows, so I was quite genned up this year. i haven't been on quite so many and I think, yeah, the the brain fog has been rolling in.
00:11:17
Speaker
But there you go. We shall see. We shall see. But I've got a sneaky feeling that your specialist subject might just have been drip, drip, dripping in throughout the year, regardless of how many of our shows you've done, because your specialist subject is the archers in the calendar year of 2025. So here come your three questions.
00:11:37
Speaker
What disaster struck the dairy at Bridge Farm early in 2025, forcing characters to scramble to save the cheese stock? Oh my goodness, there was the most awful flood of effluent filled the dairy.
00:11:53
Speaker
yes absolutely. yeah yeah Maybe it was a vegan activist. Well, sewage was getting pumped into the river and then it just couldn't cope and then the sewage just came straight into the dairy. It didn't just go in the dairy though, it went in people in the sort of new build houses, it went in them as well, the new estate, they all got flooded with poo as well. ah goodness me Thank goodness it's just a radio show. Okay, well done, Julie. That's the first one correct. Question two, which two characters ended up in direct competition for a job at the dairy when finances forced a redundancy decision in March?
00:12:31
Speaker
That was Clary and Susan, because they were both working there at the time. Very good. And Susan got the job, unfortunately. Clary had to go and work as a dinner lady. She got bullied there to begin with, and then she went and worked in the other shop for a bit.
00:12:51
Speaker
yes Impressive knowledge. I can't give you bonus points, I'm afraid, but and nonetheless, I'm... Astounded at how much your brain is retained there. at Your final question, question three. What new responsibility was offered to Brad Horobin by Jim Lloyd in March, a role which sparked controversy with another character? Oh, yeah.
00:13:12
Speaker
Brad tried out for the cricket team, but he wasn't very good. But because he's very mathematical and some might say slightly on the spectrum, he's really good with numbers and things like that. So he was offered to the opportunity to be a scorer alongside Jim Lloyd, who's done it for AJ's.
00:13:30
Speaker
Julie, three out of three. Look at that. A full scorecard Very impressive. Very impressive. Well, you know, punks don't want to get it all correct anyway. It's more actually to get some wrong. It was an act of rebellion not being not clued up.
00:13:47
Speaker
yeah Absolutely. Okay, well, we've met the teams, we've gleaned a little bit into ah what keeps their brains ticking apart from vegan and animal rights news. But that's enough of the falafel, let's get on with the big vegan quiz of the year 2025.

Quiz Round 1: True Headlines

00:14:12
Speaker
Okay, our first round is called Two Lies and a Truth. Please remember it that way round. It's two lies and a truth. am going to give one of the teams a selection of three different headlines.
00:14:28
Speaker
one of which is true. So there are two false headlines. You've only got to pick out the true one. Listeners at home, do join in with this. We are giving two points per correct answer. So I will start with the athletes because you've got the top marks in the specialist subjects. Here come your three headlines.
00:14:49
Speaker
Vegan vet helps activist steal pet dog. Second headline, local council considers law to give stray cats the right to own property.
00:15:03
Speaker
And headline three, researchers recommend providing rabbits with weekly puzzle challenges. I'll give you those once more. Vegan vet helps activists steal pet dog.
00:15:17
Speaker
Second one, local council considers law to give stray cats rights to own property. And the third one, researchers recommend providing rabbits with weekly puzzle challenges.
00:15:29
Speaker
Kate and Julie, you can confer out loud, of course. What do you think? Well, Julie, I think the the second one is just not true. What do you think? None of these ring any bells with me. I'll say that apart from alarm bells because they don't ring any other kind of bell with me.
00:15:48
Speaker
I don't remember hearing about any of those stories. I do remember a vegan vet getting into trouble, though.
00:16:00
Speaker
Do you remember her? There was a vegan vet who got into bother and got suspended, but I don't think it was for helping an activist steal a pet dog. I don't know. i think it might be that one.
00:16:14
Speaker
Could be just a very, very sneaky twist of a headline, of course. I mean, I would say personally that rabbits would benefit. I mean, I don't think rabbits should be in cages anyway, but if they are going to be confined, I would have thought you would have to give enrichment to rabbits. Do you know i mean? so So I kind of want the third one to be true, really. Puzzles.
00:16:38
Speaker
What kind of puzzles are they being given? Well, just anything. I mean, all animals are so intelligent. They just need stimulation and enrichment and things to occupy their mind, I think. So if they're just confined, they would need something. So I would like it to be that, but I think it might be the first one. But what do you think? I think it might be the first one. Okay, final answer. Yeah, let's go for the vegan vet activist. is the correct answer. yeah As reported by the Daily Telegraph in September, Dr. Amir Kashiv removed a microchip from a pet after being told that the five-year-old Labrador had been abused by its owner and they were consequently struck
00:17:24
Speaker
Off, we did feature it in the show, but clearly it was one that you two were not on. kind okay yeah I remember it. yeah I remember that now, yeah. Punks, here come your three headlines. One of them is true.
00:17:37
Speaker
Hunters could be required to wear cameras to prove no animals are stressed. Second headline. Animal rights activists seek bear hunting permits.
00:17:48
Speaker
And number three, a feature. The extreme sports enthusiasts who let polar bears hunt them. to the three headlines, hunters could be required to wear cameras to prove no animals are stressed.
00:18:02
Speaker
Animal rights activists seek bear hunting permits and a feature on the extreme sports enthusiasts who let polar bears hunt them. Paul, Dominic, what do you think? do You know, none of them. i really know I don't think it's the last one, but I'm really, I'm really, i knew the last one, which is annoying, but i I'm not sure. that One feels maybe the most likely, but I'm not sure, mate. What do you reckon?
00:18:25
Speaker
I also think that one sounds the most likely. It's the kind of ridiculous thing that that Carnis come up with all the time. Yeah, we can absolutely prove that these animals are quite happy to be exploited. Look at these images, concrete evidence. I i think the number three sounds very much like a creation from Anthony's parade.
00:18:45
Speaker
think so, yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm on with that. what was this like What was the second one again? Just remind me, because my memory's shot. Animal rights activists seek bear hunting permits. That's the sort of thing you would get in the Daily Mail as a headline, isn't it? and i'm But I'm not sure if it's... I can't think of a story I remember. I'd say it's between one and two, but I'm to... Absolutely, yeah. I'll go one. I'll go one. Go one. Yeah, um' I'm happy with one.
00:19:08
Speaker
Okay. I'm afraid that is not the right answer. So, Kate and Julie, I can offer this to you for one point because you've had one removed. know it. Go Julie. Kate, I think it's the bear permits one because I think the vegans were buying them up so that other folk couldn't buy them.
00:19:24
Speaker
That's absolutely right. Yes, it was from the state and and there was a specific number. available uh there was one per hunted bear basically so a a few animal rights activists realized if they got some of the permits then that would be reducing the number of bears that died clever old them okay well done julie i thought you were gonna say clever old julie there reigning champion is doing well well clever old julie ah
00:19:59
Speaker
Pressure's on for the next one. Okay, Kate and Julie, here's your next one. Why killing zombies would technically be vegan. Second headline, plant-based diet fad will cause the next pandemic.
00:20:14
Speaker
And the third one, vegans must be catered for in the apocalypse. Three headlines again. Why killing zombies would be technically vegan. Number two, plant-based diet fad will cause the next pandemic.
00:20:29
Speaker
And number three, vegans must be catered for in the apocalypse. Gosh, they all sound utterly ridiculous. Does anybody need catered for if there's an apocalypse? so it doesn't and the apocalypse mean that there isn't any life left and therefore one wouldn't need any catering? Well, I'm going to be demanding my vegan food after the apocalypse. don't know about anyone else, you know. I don't know if it's specifically just catering. I don't know if someone's going to be coming around with an ice cream van or something. it's it's so i I don't know what the exact definition of an apocalypse is but I thought that meant like just nothing, everything dead. Killing zombies is technically vegan. Plant-based food is going to cause the next pandemic or something like that. Vegans must be catered for in in the event of an apocalypse. They all sound ridiculous, but just because it sounds a bit ridiculous doesn't mean it's not been a headline. Well, do you know something?
00:21:32
Speaker
i don't know of anybody anywhere who insists that vegans must be catered for. Nowhere I've ever been anyway. So if it takes an apocalypse for that to be the case, bring it on, i would say. You know, that sounds all right.
00:21:47
Speaker
I know there's just been a zombie film out made by a vegan activist, so that's making me think that they've made some kind of smart comment about that. I don't think that any killing is vegan, so I'm not... i i some days Aren't zombies dead already, though? I think it depends how you define dead.
00:22:05
Speaker
philosophical question. Yeah. Do you know what? That might be quite a damning thing to say about anybody. know what mean? Well, I'm sorry, but you don't count because you're dead. you know mean? That might be an insult. Zombies have feelings too. Not very woke thing to say to a zombie. You know, it's like you don't need to... Rights for zombies.
00:22:26
Speaker
You know, you don't need to go on about it. Do you know i mean? a Right, athletes, come on. You're three points in the lead. You need to get on with it. Kate, what are we doing here? Oh, dear. I think it might be that one because of your... It's Tom Pickering who's done that film, isn't it?
00:22:42
Speaker
it? I think that might be the correct one. You know, it could easily be a quotey headline in a like a film Buffy thing or something. I think, though, that there's no way anybody could say that the plant-based business is making a pandemic, though. Oh, we need to find the truth, of course. so Yes, it's the truth. true I vote for one. Okay, let's do it. Let's do it. like yeah Okay, Dominic and Paul, this is your chance to get on the board because that is incorrect. You can get one point for the correct answer. Oh, no. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. Number three, I reckon. I think I remember this. I thought number two. I can absolutely imagine some right-wing paper going, oh, yeah, it'll be the vegans that cause the next pandemic. So I don't know. Why do you think three people? I've got, I can't flipping remember, but I've got something in my head that this was talked about. And maybe I even talked about it. I don't know. But I feel, if I say I feel strongly about it, I'm wrong. I'm going to look a real dick. But I've got a strong feeling that three is the right answer. can't remember why. believe it's two. But you know what? I'm going to bow to three. Oh, no. Let's hope I'm right. Yeah, let's hope for three. Don't. Well, thankfully, the punks haven't fallen out yet because Paul was correct. Professor Tim Lang, at the end of May, wrote in the Times newspaper, and he is a professor of food policy. He told the government that meat dodgers must be catered for in any food apocalypse. So not the ultimate apocalypse, but just in cases of food. I think I might talked about it. It been one of my stories. That was a badly worded question for us athletes. I read the headline. read the headline. That's all I did.
00:24:23
Speaker
Okay, punks, you're clawing it back. Punks, this is your next one. And this is the last one of our two lies and a truth round. Okay, listen very carefully to these three headlines, punks. Woman praised for attacking man who hit donkey.
00:24:40
Speaker
The second headline, donkey praised for attacking woman who hit man. The third headline, man praised for attacking donkey who hit woman.
00:24:53
Speaker
yeah mc again Okay, the first one. Woman praised for attacking man who hit donkey. Donkey praised for attacking woman who hit man.
00:25:05
Speaker
Or man praised for attacking donkey who hit woman. It's the classic WMD, DWM, MDW scenario. Weapons of maths donkey. Okay.
00:25:20
Speaker
um I think you want one to be the right answer, obviously, don't you? I want it to be one, but I think it's two. but I think that I did this story, you know, I i was on this show, but it's one from the beginning of the year, I reckon. So I think, can you just read the second one, just the second one for us, Anthony? So the second scenario is that therere a don there's a donkey that has been praised for attacking a woman and that woman had hit a man.
00:25:50
Speaker
i'll go all right I still reckon it's one, but I'll go with Dom as he did. No, no, no. Paul's on the the winning streak. I'm going to defer. I'm going to defer to Paul. We're going to go for option one. Oh, no, no. I agree, Paul. Option one. Option one it is. Boom. So option one is that there was a woman...
00:26:06
Speaker
who was praised for attacking a man who had just hit a donkey. We reported that from the animal reader on April the 13th. It was in Egypt. um And the the woman who did the attacking was a Dutch woman ah who has done lots of yeah lots of um stuff working in favour of animals.
00:26:26
Speaker
Indeed. And with that, at the end of the first round, the punks have drawn level. It is three points apiece. Yeah.
00:26:38
Speaker
Into our next round, which is called Bidding

Bidding Wars: Egg Replacements

00:26:41
Speaker
Wars. We've got three different goes at this. So I'm going to start off with our athletes, Julie and Kate, and I'm going to give you a scenario. And Kate and Julie, you're going to decide how many of these answers you think you can give without making a mistake. As soon as you make a mistake, your attempt is over, okay? So you're gonna make your bid before you answer.
00:27:07
Speaker
But before you answer, Dominic and Paul are gonna have a chance to up your bid and they could bid for a higher number. And then Kate and Julie, you could try and outbid them again. Once one team says, no, I can't go any higher, then it will be on the highest successful bidders to see if they can do it successfully. Listeners at home, you'll need to decide what your bid is and sort of inter intersperse it between the athletes and the punks bid. So the first category, Viva, the wonderful animal advocates based in the UK, and I believe they've got a branch in Poland as well. um In 2022, they produced a guide of how to replace egg
00:27:50
Speaker
in cooking. They suggested 12 different ways or ingredients that you could use to replace egg in cooking.
00:28:00
Speaker
So, Kate and Julie, how many of those 12 do you think you could name, bearing in mind that as soon as you get one wrong, your attempt is over? Julie, queen of the kitchen. but who snorted at that?
00:28:19
Speaker
I think we could do 10. Do you think? Do you think? I'm not confident of 10. Yeah. yeah Come on, let's do it. but You can have that. Yeah, Paul, I was thinking that my answer was quite, I was thinking, I think you go for it. Three, yeah.
00:28:36
Speaker
until But you know what? There's just... You can be quite loose with your definition of egg replacer. Well, so you say, let's see. Are they? Are they? I think it's a little bit gelatinous or sort of gooey as an egg replacer in my book. It's got to be what they've said, Julie, not just what you think.
00:28:57
Speaker
Oh, right. They said 10, didn't No, let's do 10. Let's do 10. I think can do 10. Yeah, go for it. Okay, so hold on, hold on, hold on. So listeners at home, at this point, if you're playing along, please pause the show, write your list down, um and then obviously we'll reveal the full list at the end. So you'll work out how many you got correct in a row before you had your first incorrect answer. Okay, Julie and Kate, let's hear your 10 ways to replace egg in cooking as per Viva's 2022 poster. Well, I don't know about Viva, but I'll give you some. I bet this is what they said. The first one is that liquid that comes out the tin when you've got a tin of chickpeas.
00:29:40
Speaker
Yeah, I'll give you that. Aquafaba. Yes, that is on the list. You've got one. Yeah, okay. Flax seeds. ah Ground flax seed, yes, is on there as well. That's two.
00:29:53
Speaker
Famously, as an egg replacer, chia seeds are really handy because they're really like... glutenous it's on the list that's three um banana is another one that everybody uses instead of egg believe it or not that is four does it oh brilliant uh oh i'm gonna say something that i'm just going to wonder is egg replacement yeah i'm gonna i'm gonna say you don't have to alternate if you don't want to but Right. Julie, if you're if you're more competent, I've got one or two that I'm thinking that are egg replace, you would replace with... Well, you get like commercial egg replacer. Yeah.
00:30:33
Speaker
yep you've said that word for word which has made me wondering whether you're doing a sneaky little google here julie but that is correct you get ones that are literally in a packet and i can't remember the name of anyone but there's a there's a man who's not even a vegan who has a company that makes egg replacer just egg is it not yeah oh i've got that yes oh is that still available I don't know, but I've heard of it, Justin. Yeah, it used to be, but don't know if you can still get it. there's the, is it called Orgram? Yes, yes. It's like a powder.
00:31:05
Speaker
um that Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So commercial egg replacer. Okay, so you've got five. Five more to get. Oh, yeah this is... Yogurt. I think yeah anything like a plant-based yogurt goes in instead.
00:31:19
Speaker
So... Yeah, that's six. Is that okay? plus Plant-based yogurt... And I think tofu also, although it's kind of the same as yogurt, it's the same stuff, isn't it? Yeah. Do know what mean?
00:31:32
Speaker
Silken tofu. Yeah, that's seven. that one? I was going to say that. What have we got? We've only got three together. What about... God, um there is a flower, there is a flower as in F-L-O-U-R that is like a wheaty thing that some folk do.
00:31:52
Speaker
not like gluten. It's dead, but it's not... core it and You know what, Paul? I said I had three and my I've got one that I think is dead obvious. Oh, I know. No, no I'm thinking i'm thinking i know the flour because it's what the what people from India put in instead gram flour. They use that. yeah That is correct. That is eight. Okay. So because we're getting really close to the 10 that you bid, um from now on, I'm going to want you to say that is a final answer for that one. Okay. So if you're speculating, on comment. Well, we can speculate. You're going to tell me when you, of course you Oh, yeah. Okay. You're going to tell me your ninth and 10th answers when you've decided on them. Julie, look back. Do people use potato starch, actually, and as ah as a sort of thickener egg replacer type thing? What do you reckon? Mm-hmm.
00:32:44
Speaker
Oh, I think people use a sort of, it not like an ordinary potato, but something that's gummier than that. Smash.
00:32:55
Speaker
A vegetable that's gummier than an ordinary potato. but not a squash it's about like agar agar or whatever carrageenan or something would they count what do you think i don't know i don't know about agar needs to be something slimy it needs to be something so they they kind of you you know they kind of set like a transparent early and so i'm gonna have a stab i'm gonna have a stab at a tuber that isn't uh that isn't
00:33:30
Speaker
um Well, I'm going to... Sweet potato. Try sweet potato. Is that there?
00:33:38
Speaker
Well done, Julie. Oh, my God. nos There's a load of mushy gummy stuff out there. There really is, folks. You don't need eggs. You really do need eggs. There's so many other gummy things you can put in food. Dribble?
00:33:55
Speaker
Spit? Dribble? wow well I'm not coming for dinner at yours. Something that's like a coagulant.
00:34:08
Speaker
you know what I mean? Coagulant. Yeah. oh And Come on, Kate, you do lots of baking. I know, I know, but I don't, I just, I, oh, I don't know. I use like whole foods mainly, don't I?
00:34:24
Speaker
oh I would use the flax. One of these is definitely a whole food. Oh, God. There's 12, isn't there, also? We're going to put a timer on, and I think at some point, yeah. and I'm thinking along the lines of things like dates or sticky things, but they are just for sticking cereal bars together. They're not egg replacers, but something that has got lots of sugar in it and is sticky. Like mature dates or something. or Yeah, like dates or something. Do know what No, I don't think that. No.
00:34:54
Speaker
But something like that that is sugary and sticky... and fruit sugar like maple syrup is the wrong thing cashew nuts in some things like not as an egg replacer it has to be more it's things that are sort of translucent do you know what mean like a almost like a pulped up thing or I don't know I've said sweet potato keep getting visions of sweet potatoes now I can't I think it's sweet potatoes. Ordinary potatoes?
00:35:34
Speaker
White potatoes? I don't think they would work. They're quite starchy. i do can You've had lots of speculating. I'm going to have to push you for now. I cannot get past nine. I'm sorry.
00:35:46
Speaker
one ah Go on, say one of your speculations. Yeah. You may as well give it a go. right yeah Chickpea. i Not chickpeas, I mean soy beans or something like that.
00:36:00
Speaker
Oh, tantalisingly close, Kate. Tantalisingly close. Soya flour is on the list. Can say that? Baking powder and... so Ant, the first one I thought of, which you speculated over, potato starch. It's not on Viva's list. What? Really? That's the first thing thought. fact, I'm pretty sure that some of the...
00:36:21
Speaker
um Commercial replacers do use potato starch flour. You were on the cusp of saying apple puree, Julie. Is that really an egg? Which is on there.
00:36:34
Speaker
so
00:36:39
Speaker
I was really impressed. It was very good day. I thought you'd get about five. Yeah, so I will give you four out of the maximum five points available. The three answers that Kate and Julie didn't give were apple puree, baking powder and cider vinegar. Baking powder? Yeah, baking powder. Baking powder and cider vinegar are two things together. you know mean? That's not an actual single ingredient. That's a bit confusing. Nobody's going to say that. Good job you didn't say 12. Yeah.
00:37:08
Speaker
Well, Viva did. But yeah, very impressive. I didn't think you'd get anywhere close to it. That was impressive. It was impressive. Very good. Okay, Dominic and Paul, we're going to give you the first bid for this

Guessing Vegan Films

00:37:22
Speaker
next one. So as I'm sure you'll remember, on the 27th of May of this year, veganfoodandliving.com did another one of their clickbaity ah pieces and they listed 26 vegan films that changed the world for good.
00:37:39
Speaker
How many of them do you think you can name in a row without naming a film that is not on the list? I think we should start low and do this bidding bit properly, Dom, is my is my tactic. Because if we say something like three, it will come back to us, I reckon. so what What do you reckon?
00:37:58
Speaker
many could you think of? I reckon I could probably only do three. So yeah, three is a good bet. Let's start three. Let's start the bid. Do proper bidding more. Okay, the punks are saying three. What you saying, athletes? We've got to go. What do you reckon, Julie? Five? Oh, how many we think they could do or how many we think we could do? I don't understand. The highest bidder will have to do the list. Oh, I couldn't do that. don't... Yes, I feel that Kate might be submitting most of the names for this list. might but then again, my brain cell. Sorry, is it from particular year? No, it's of all time. They listed 26, but the question is how well you can read their mind, I suppose. Eight. Athletes are going for eight. Punks, are you going to make them name those eight, or are you going to try and outbid them? I don't if I could do nine. If I'm honest, I could probably half a dozen tops, I reckon, Dom.
00:38:49
Speaker
Right, so here's the thing, right? They said the I a number. This is tactics now. They said the I a number, but it didn't go back to us. I think we should say, how many are there, Ant? 22. There are 26. 26? I think we should say 26. And then if we just get three, well, we get at least one point.
00:39:11
Speaker
And they don't get point. That's my tactics.
00:39:15
Speaker
That's a good question. What's the rules? What's the rules? Fantastic. Yeah. yeah Well, for this round, I will allow that tactic. So your bid is 26. So it's automatically over to you for the final round of the of this section. I might change the rules slightly. Okay. So the punks are going to name all 26 alphabetically. no um Okay. Off you go. And i I will do it proportional to how many you get right. We'll decide how many out of five you get. Cowspiracy. Cowspiracy is on the list. Land Hope Glory.
00:39:47
Speaker
go on paul land of hope and glory is on the list so is this list made after um this is talking to paul this isn't me giving an answer christ spiracy uh do you think paul that that would make the list i i don't know because i was gonna say so i was gonna say see spiracy which i think might be and i'm not sure my spiracy is a bit of a different okay let's go for therapy see spiracy is on the list Dominion Dominion is on the list Forks over knives Forks over knives on the list So that is five you've got So I'm going to say you've got at least one Yay! Oh, um what was the one about the ah vegan sports people?
00:40:27
Speaker
ah What was that called again? ah
00:40:32
Speaker
Oh, um um there was one about the plate, wasn't there? um Oh man, what was that? What you think, Paul? This is really old now. I'm going to say a film. It's not necessarily a totally vegan film, so it might not be on this list, but it had veganism on it. as's a film called Not In My Name, which had Chrissie Hynde on it from The Pretenders. She was talking about veganism, and I wonder if Not In My Name might be on this list. It might not be because it's not a purely explicit film, but it is one that I discovered. of Are you aware of that one, Paul?
00:41:06
Speaker
ah it ring It rings a vague bell with Chrissie Hines but is it a is it film or was it more of an interview or something like that? It kind of like a collection of interviews, sort of documentary. So the the title of this article is 26 Vegan Films That Changed the World for Good. I feel we're being led by Anthony, so I'm not saying... Let's think of some more definite ones. So Earthlings. Oh, Earthlings! Is on the list, correct?
00:41:33
Speaker
Yeah. we need We need some more of this. There are some more of this ones, but my brain... Oh, what was the plate one? Oh, pfft. Can we jump in and get some points? No, you can't. You've got to ah people really behaved When I was thinking potato starch, potato starch, which wasn't even correct, I kept that to myself ah Yeah, give your potato starch to yourself, you. there's There's a film that I sponsored, um yeah remember then and I can't remember the name of it. Oh, it was ah man, what was it called? um
00:42:04
Speaker
Should we just put other nouns and then put the word spiracy at the end of them? Because that's that's bound to come up. Chickpea spiracy. I was just going through the alphabet. Um... ah Um...
00:42:26
Speaker
I'm going to know loads of these when they're said, and I can't think of them because my memory is so bad. our show, our new... Oh, the ones we've reviewed. We've reviewed some. The zombie one, but I think that... Oh, that one we've...
00:42:40
Speaker
I think that wasn't so well received. I don't think that would be on the list. No, what was one? I can't remember the one that I did did today, in a few hours ago. What was it called? What was that? Was it Food for Thought or something? Food for Thought? Food for Thought is on the list.
00:42:56
Speaker
Yeah, I should know that. I literally talked about it four hours ago. You must be at three points by now, Anne. How many we got correct? ah You're on seven, which technically, if I round it, I would be rounding it down to one point. oh You need one more to get three points. yes like what was the What was the vegan sports one? Was that like vegan superstars or something? What was that called? That's the one I know the name of. Oh, what about about the, um oh, the Jertsy Dyrdek, whatever his name is, the running one. Or ah or the other the lady who runs.
00:43:29
Speaker
I know that one too. I've given, ah, dear. Come on, Dom. it's I'll be honest i've I've exhausted all my knowledge now although I might kick myself when Ant lists them oh no is Free Willy on there or something like that ah well what I mean maybe a like babe could if Babe yeah and Chicken Run and Chicken Run maybe as well possibly Okay, you've just said three consecutively that are not on the list. So I'm going to call them for the ones that are not on the list that they think are. That should be a deduction.
00:44:09
Speaker
No, so I'm going to end it at ah one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. I'm afraid I'm just going to round that down. If you'd have got one more, I would have rounded up to two. Before we reveal the list in its entirety, Kate and Julie, any that you would have said? Yes, The Game Changers is the one that Paul was looking for in his mind. the one yeah That's on the list, yeah. Yeah, and I think you were also alluding to Fiona. Oaks, yeah. Running for Goode. Running for Goode.
00:44:43
Speaker
Not on the list, I'm afraid, so that's where your attempt would have ended. I know, I know. Is that one I sponsored? Other ones. I'm just telling Paul, the one he was talking about. I'm not saying it's on the list.
00:44:54
Speaker
it Just out of curiosity, we wait that's that's it now for us, isn't it? Is Okja on there? Well, I wasn't giving points to your your answers anyway for this. Christspiracy on the list. Christspiracy is on there. Oh, man. I didn't think it would be on.
00:45:12
Speaker
Why didn't I? What, didn't It's that film didn't Could is on it? it's that film i doesn't like i could never go Vegan is it on i could never go vegan is on there. yeah. yeah. Pignorant, yeah. Pignorant, Pignorant, yeah. Pignorant, yeah. Pignorant, yeah. Pignorant,
00:45:33
Speaker
moment just so I can go through ah the rest of the answers for listeners who are playing along. In fact, I'll just read the whole list. Cowspiracy, The Game Changers, Seaspiracy, What the Health, Earthlings, Forks Over Knives, Land of Hope and Glory, Eating Our Way to Extinction, which Paul says he's sponsored. That's the fucking sponsored. McLeibel, two people who wouldn't say sorry.
00:45:56
Speaker
Hogwood, a modern horror story. The animal people, Dominion, Vegucated, You Are What You Eat. Poisoned, The Dirty Truth About Your Food. I Could Never Go Vegan. Lucent, The End of Meat. 73 cows, pignorant, eating animals, food for thought, live and let live, the end of medicine, carnage and Christ-spiracy. So one point to the punk. And Teagan the vegan, they've even got a vegan. Teagan the vegan, yeah. Teagan the vegan, poor Teagan the vegan. Okay. Onto our last bidding war. Now for this one, I'm going to give five points, no matter how many you get correct, to the highest successful bid.
00:46:39
Speaker
So if the athletes, if you say five and the punks say six and they fail, then the athletes will get five points. epi So basically, if you try and fail, the other team gets five points. If you try and succeed, you will get five points. That's an anti-DOM move, that is. You've made the goalposts.

Vegan Cities Controversy

00:47:03
Speaker
You know, the punk movement does have an impact. um So, Happy Cow, a few weeks ago, revealed their top 25 vegan cities in the world, 2025.
00:47:15
Speaker
twenty twenty five The list is determined using the following criteria from Happy Cow's exclusive global database. So they factor in the number of fully vegan businesses listed on Happy Cow in the city.
00:47:28
Speaker
Additionally, the density of vegan businesses per capita. the density of vegan businesses per square mile, and the growth of vegan businesses since their last report at the end of 2024.
00:47:44
Speaker
There are 25 cities on the list. I'm going to offer the first bid to the athletes. How many do you think you can name consecutively correctly?
00:47:57
Speaker
Oh, gosh. Julie, I'm not very good on this. I haven't done that much travelling, to be perfectly honest. We just have to say 10 cities, basically. I did read an article about this not very long ago.
00:48:12
Speaker
Can we just do 10 again and we'll just do 10 cities? You're going for 10? Okay. Punks, are you going to make them do 10? 11. Unless they fail to get your five points? Oh! Oh! reckon we could do 11. What do you reckon, Don Warren, we could do 11? We've said it now. I'm afraid this is an auction house situation, Paul. It's with the punks at 11. So, athletes, are you going to outbid or are you going to make them do it?
00:48:36
Speaker
oh No, I can only do 10, I think. Yeah, I don't feel confident. I don't get that out much. punks it is over to you this is a podcast so ah listeners you won't be able to tell this punks i would like you when you are giving an answer for sure i need to see both thumbs up from both of you for that to be an answer because otherwise if you're conferring i might jump in and say oh yes okay so of the top 25 vegan cities as decided by happy cow few weeks ago you're going to name 11 fine dom should we get should we start with should we start with london
00:49:12
Speaker
Yeah, it's got to be London, hasn't it? London. Okay, London's on the list. Number one. I will tell you their rankings as we go. Number one, London. Berlin's got be... Go on, go on, Paul. I'm going to say New York. New York City is going to be... Yeah, go for that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, New York City is in at number nine. Yeah, I reckon Berlin's got to be there, obviously. First place I went overseas, Berlin was amazing for veganism, so Berlin. In at number two, so you've got three of them correct.
00:49:41
Speaker
Lisbon, I reckon. What reckon? Oh, do you know what? I don't know about that. It's a place I've not been to, but I'm going to believe you, Paul. I'm going to choose to believe you. Let's say Lisbon. Lisbon is listed as number five. So that is four correct.
00:49:55
Speaker
Really? have I'm assuming I've been to Amsterdam and Rotterdam. They're both pretty vegan. ah Amsterdam seems like the more obvious one. Yeah, I've been Amsterdam. I think let's go Amsterdam. Amsterdam is listed at number seven. So you've got five. You're nearly halfway. OK, a couple of early. i There's that place in Italy that I can't think of. So we'll come back to that. But I'm also thinking Barcelona, Rotterdam. not I'm not so sure about Barcelona. I don't know. Yeah, that might be. I've just come back from Paris. and That's pretty good. But it's it was before.
00:50:26
Speaker
Tel Aviv. Oh, absolutely. Of course. Yeah, Tel Aviv, definitely. yeah yeahp I'm afraid Tel Aviv is not on Happy Count. Oh, that is... I think that is...
00:50:41
Speaker
Not right. Okay, fine. man x I'm surprised. I am surprised by that. That sounds wrong to me, but okay. Yeah, it it is ah well known, isn't it, for its... So I will read the list out in order, one down to 25. So you've got London, you've got Berlin. Number three is Los Angeles. Number four is Portland. You've got Lisbon at five. You mentioned Barcelona at six.
00:51:07
Speaker
Amsterdam at seven. Oh, my God! Wow. Mexico City at eight. ah New York City, you got it nine. Number 10, and a kind of new entry to the list, was Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. apparently Wouldn't have got that. Is the ah biggest growth in any city vegan-wise this year. um Then 11 through to 25, you didn't get any of them, but here they are in order. Warsaw, Tokyo, Porto, Bangkok, Paris, Prague, San Francisco, Taipei, Singapore, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Madrid, Vienna, Sao Paulo and Munich.
00:51:42
Speaker
So controversy there. Take it up with happy cow. A strongly worded letter clearly needed. that Missing Tel Aviv is definitely... Gosh, I'm surprised that Manchester wasn't on there. You know, I almost said Manchester. I'm really sp surprised because, i mean, it's where I live and it's fantastic. And what about...
00:51:58
Speaker
Brighton. Yeah, Brighton. Yeah, it's a city. yeah eyes Because Manchester's not that big, is it? I think this was a political list.
00:52:10
Speaker
Could have been. And of course, nowhere in Scotland. Of course, course. Actually, Edinburgh and Glasgow are pretty good, aren't they? They are. Yeah, they're amazing. I know, but they didn't make their list, did they? It wouldn't be the big vegan quiz of the year without some controversy. I seem to remember there was some Christmas pudding ingredient that caused uproar last year. At least this time, it's happy cow you can take it up with. So, at the end of our second round, the punks are on four points, but the athletes are on 12. Woo! Woo!
00:52:42
Speaker
We're going to do our podcast round, are Enough of the Falafel round.

Enough of the Falafel: Podcast Trivia

00:52:47
Speaker
So... two points per correct answer. Now, this listeners, there's a chance for you to catch up because you can just answer all the questions, but I'm going to alternate them between the teams. Maybe you could be charitable and decide, oh, we'll only do ah the athletes' questions or we'll only do the punks, but it's up to you. It's just for fun. So two points per correct answer. If you get it wrong, I will offer it to the other team um and I will go for the thumbs up for a final answer.
00:53:17
Speaker
um as before, so you can confer. Okay, punks, we're going to start with you for the first question. What u state is Shane from? Texas. Texas is two points. Well done. Which falafel guest manages to bring Nazis into the discussion quite disturbing amount of the time? think it's probably Mark. Yeah, I think it's probably Mark. I can't actually think of him. I know. I think it's probably Mark as well. final answer i think i think it's mark i think it's mark it's correct i'm not sure if any other guest has ever mentioned the nazis but mark managed to get in okay your next question in which year and month was the first ever episode of enough of the falafel published Oh my word, I feel such a failure, I should be like tattooed inside my brain, shouldn't it?
00:54:18
Speaker
Right. Do we even know the year, Paul? Do even know the year? 23? think was near the start of the year, if it was 23. I'm feeling 23, I wouldn't have a... Okay, I really don't know what the month was...
00:54:33
Speaker
The month was, um I can't remember. um I wouldn't have a clue on the month if I'm being quite nervous, but I'm quite happy to go with 23 and then like you can take your pick on... would It wouldn't have been January, would it Because it's kind of a bit of a... um ah Would it have been like February, March or something, do you think? or I've got a feeling that that maybe haven't recorded them like towards the end of one year and and and started publishing them in January. I'm going to say January 2023.
00:54:58
Speaker
I'm gonna offer it over to the athletes I will say Dominic you recorded a jingle where you actually say the month and the year as part of the jingle don't say anything more Dominic don't say anything more Julie and Kate I think it's towards the end of 2022 I'm just trying to think or September or Julie what do you think I thought September sounded right because I think it started then and then I think I ended up joining in in the winter.
00:55:33
Speaker
i i remember I did the news thing of the year with you, Anthony. Was that, that have been 23? Because it wasn't last year.
00:55:44
Speaker
It must have been 2022 when we started. i think it's twenty twenty three Well, don't know. I think 2022 and the end of 2022. But then really rubbish with dates and numbers. think 2023 and I think it's autumn. And think I then...
00:56:06
Speaker
kind of did a wee interview or something about December time so and I think there had been couple of months before it I'm going to go for September 2023 okay i i will bow to your greater knowledge I'm guessing but I think that's my best guess two points to the athletes September 23 okay athletes here is your question because that was a steal your question athletes which contributor has never listened to an episode the ei thing no it's a regular human contributor
00:56:49
Speaker
A regular human contributor. I'm looking at Dom's face right now. This is a trick. I wonder if it's Dominic because he's such a busy guy. He's just always off reading, doing his poetry and performing and being amazing. I wonder if it's Dom.
00:57:10
Speaker
Who do you reckon it might be? I thought it was a trick question. you know what mean? so that was why I thought, yeah you know, a contributor, they don't have to be an actual podcasting presenter, but they could be contributing to the show. Yeah.
00:57:26
Speaker
What about, yes you know, that the lad, the little lad that we had? Oh. What was his name? He's it he's in the beginning. um Yes, I know who you mean. Does he count as a contributor? He's contributed. he was on a program. Yeah. He's not a regular contributor. No. Unless you count the fact he's on the jingle at all the time, you're going to have to be a bit more precise about what you mean by a regular contributor. Yeah.
00:57:53
Speaker
someone who has been on the show several times this year oh yeah oh does that mean it's part of a recorded jingle or actually live podcasting they've been in live recordings that we've turned into episodes uh okay oh thank you well that is helpful i'm looking at dob he's trying not to grin i think it's dominic i'll go with you i think it's dominic
00:58:21
Speaker
is the correct answer. Well done, John.
00:58:26
Speaker
I cannot do a poker face.
00:58:35
Speaker
Dominic, not even a sheep episode. Not even a sheep episode. I'm not, I'm not. You don't know what you're missing.
00:58:46
Speaker
Right, over to the puns to try and get some points on the board this round. I will give you um two points if you get this completely right. I'll give you one point if you get it partially right.
00:58:57
Speaker
Each continent in the world has got a country that has got the most enough of the falafel listeners in it. How many of them can you name?
00:59:07
Speaker
Antarctica does not count. Sorry, so it's a country and a continent, right? So UK? Yep. Or England? yeah yeah USA in North America. Correct. Yeah, yeah.
00:59:20
Speaker
Now, Australasia, I'm going to go with... I reckon New Zealand more than Australia. I've got a funny feeling you might be right, you know.
00:59:31
Speaker
But should we... What about... was confident. I messed it up for us. I'm just going to keep quiet. What about... um thinking of South America and Africa then um what about what about South Africa and Africa I don't know I'm trying to think there'll be a bit more likely one Africa let's say that South Africa is correct that's three right awesome I I'm willing Australia is the obvious answer but I kind of have a feeling you're right Dom that it's New Zealand weirdly But there's a lot of vegans in Australia, though, isn't there? I wish I hadn't said anything. I've put doubt in your mind. Just population-wise. Let's go for Asia. Let's go for Asia. Yeah, I'm going to... Yeah, so would it be somewhere, like we said earlier on, like bloody Taipei? Not Thailand. Taiwan?
01:00:23
Speaker
Oh, China, Taiwan. I don't know about that. Would we have any listeners in India? I would have felt thought we would have something in India, wouldn't we? Yeah, i'd be I'd be happy with going for India. I'm afraid the answer is China for Asia.
01:00:38
Speaker
o ah let's see i wouldnt have i wouldn't have thought that. thank Are we we still able to play the fifth continental? You've got three out of six correct, so I'm going to give you one point. And even if you get the next two right, I'm not going to give you all two. So I'm going to reveal... It is New Zealand. yeah Yeah. Only just. It's very close. And then in South America, Brazil and Paraguay both have the same number of downloads. Not very many. Would not guessed Paraguay. Okay. So one point for you there. Thank you, Paraguay. love you, Paraguay. Thank da you.
01:01:15
Speaker
We love all the countries. Okay. I'm going to start putting more strict time limits because we've got a few more rounds to get through and time is getting on. Athletes, which Enough of the Falafel Guests Going Vegan episode has the most downloads? So most of us on the show have done a Going Vegan show. Whose has the most downloads though?
01:01:36
Speaker
Gosh, no idea. Okay, I'm going to give you 20 seconds. I know that the one I did got shared around a lot, actually. So without being big-headed at all, i know I do know personally of people who sent that to folk and everything. go on then, Julie. Shall we go for you? Well, we'll try mine. All sheepy episodes and people wanting to know who the real Julie is... I will say that Julie, I'm going to take that as your final answer. um It is not correct. I will say Julie's is one of the most listened to, but is not the top. So, punks, here's a chance for you to steal. are you going for?
01:02:12
Speaker
you reckon it's Ant? The one I i i yeah interviewed Ant for his one. Gosh, it might be Kate because she's such a superstar, though. all right Mark could Mark. think it's me. you reckon it's you?
01:02:25
Speaker
Yeah, I do. Yeah, think it's me. Well, I think the answers are going to be different. So I don't think it would be you again on another answer. That's all I'm thinking. All right. I could see it being Kate. Yeah, Kate.
01:02:38
Speaker
We're saying Kate. Yeah, go Kate then. Go Kate. Kate is the second most downloaded episode. ah The first is Mark. So I did do two. I did think it might be Mark. did think it might be Mark. Okay, punks, here is your... That's all the women that just want to listen to his voice. Fair enough. It's fair enough, yeah. Punks, this is your penultimate question.
01:02:59
Speaker
Of the four capital cities ah that make up the countries that make up the UK, can you put them in order in terms of how many listeners... We have in each city. Which capital city has got the most ah falafel listeners in the UK? Put them in order. oh Yeah, that's that's so I don't even know Ireland. Is that correct? Belfast?
01:03:23
Speaker
No, no, that's Northern Ireland. Yeah, no lord be Belfast, Belfast, London. I'm going to say London's first. Yep, I'm going with that. I'm going say Edinburgh, then I'm going to say Belfast. And even though I'm quite proud of my Welsh roots, I reckon that Cardiff is last.
01:03:39
Speaker
I thought you'd done that. I was going to say those last two were the other way around. Oh, Paul, you know so much better than me. I didn't know my answer, and it was wrong. You were right, Paul. You did the hard bit right, because Edinburgh and Cardiff were very close, but it was Edinburgh in second and Cardiff third and Belfast. was last. well go say That's what I was going to say. Athletes, I'm not offering that over to you, A, because you're so far in the lead, and B, because there's only so many different combinations that that could be. Here is your penultimate question, athletes. This is a tricky one. Can you name two of the top five US states in terms of listener numbers? So the USA is our second most populous country in terms of listeners. um So in terms of US states,
01:04:24
Speaker
I've got the top five written down here. Can you name two of those? I will give you five guesses and I'd like you to get a move on. I wonder if Texas might be one because Shane is there. But then again, i can't imagine it's a very vegan place.
01:04:39
Speaker
I'm pretty sure it won't be. Austin. You want to read about Austin? Right. Okay. You're not supposed to be helping us. ah He's not. He's not helping. He's unhelping. Horror.
01:04:53
Speaker
Tell me the the question again, what states in America? So not cities, but states. States, yeah. So I've got the five top states in terms of enough of the falafel downloads of all time. um And you named two of them. yeah Pretty much all states we've got some listeners in.
01:05:09
Speaker
I reckon California. Is New York? Yeah, New York. That is that that's a state, New York state. I reckon that. I think go for New York. I don't know. But yeah, I think so. That sounds like you're both saying New York. Is that right?
01:05:24
Speaker
Yeah. OK. Yeah. New York is on the list. You only need to get one more and you've got four guests. Oh, my gosh. I think, Kate, it's going to be this sort of.
01:05:38
Speaker
And I don't know which state it is I'm referring to, but I think it's going to be like the Oregon, Portland-y kind of set up, the slightly hippie people. Portland is Oregon, isn't it? In Oregon. Oregon is the state, I think, isn't it? Oregon. Will we go for Oregon? Oregon is also on the list. So you've already got your two in your first two guesses. Well done. and So the most listened to state is Virginia. Second is South Carolina. Third, New York. Fourth, Oregon. And fifth, you did say it, California. Well done, Adley. Two points for you. Wouldn't have guessed those top two. That top two is surprising. Yes, it is. Wow, amazing. Okay, pile over those people. Yes, indeed. Punks, your final question in the Enough of the Falafel round.
01:06:26
Speaker
What was the name of the 2010 claymation film that Julie, Paul and Ant reviewed earlier this year? Was that that Tegan the Vegan? No. I can't fucking remember. Sorry.
01:06:37
Speaker
You're so far behind, Punks. I'm going to take that answer as final. And yes, you are right, Paul. Tegan the Vegan.
01:06:47
Speaker
And athletes, your final all question of this round. On Mailbag episode nine that aired in November of this year, two separate listeners with the same first name emailed in.
01:07:00
Speaker
What was that shared name? Oh, gosh. Oh, Neil. is the correct answer. Well done, Julie. I knew that. that. Amazing brain. out To the two neils. To the two neils. That's good. That's enough with you, Julie, I think, weren't they? At the end of the round that I thought was going to be the quick round, ah punks, you are on nine points. Athletes, you are on 22. But there are lots of points available in our next round, which is called play your chards right.

Play Your Chards Right

01:07:34
Speaker
Okay, the starting number...
01:07:36
Speaker
is Thank you. The starting number is 100. I'm going to ask Dominic and Paul a question. You don't need to answer the question. You just need to say higher or lower.
01:07:49
Speaker
I'll then tell you the answer and score points accordingly. And then from that answer, I'm going to give Kate and Julie question. You don't have to answer the question. You just have to say higher.
01:07:59
Speaker
whether the answer is higher or lower than the previous number we've had. And we'll continue that for 10 questions. If you get stuck, I'll make it pretty obvious. Okay, so Dominic and Paul, the punks, 100 is our starting number.
01:08:14
Speaker
So question one, how many times more CO2 does beef production emit compared to black beans?
01:08:25
Speaker
How many times more CO2 does beef production emit compared to black beans. Higher or lower than 100. If it's methane, it would be more CO2.
01:08:37
Speaker
What do you reckon, Dom? so I'm going to say lower. I feel it fit i don't know. it feels so So your your number 100, as in you're suggesting that methane from cattle farms is 100 more. It's not methane, it's CO2. CO2. 100 times more, that's what the the number is, yeah? Is it more than 100 times more or less than 100 times more? Yeah, I'm going to say more, Paul.
01:09:00
Speaker
Yeah, go on then. I i got a feeling it might be less, but go on then. Yeah, yeah. Is the correct answer 162 times more CO2 produced in beef production than black beans? So Kate and Julie, your starting number is 162. So higher or lower for your next question. How many minutes long is the film Dominion?
01:09:21
Speaker
Is it higher or lower than 162? I have never watched it. Have you, Julie? think it's likely to be less. But what do you think? I say lower too.
01:09:35
Speaker
Is correct. The answer is 120. Two points to you guys. Okay. Dominic and Paul, the starting number is 120. How many Animal Rising activists were arrested for interrupting the 2023 Grand National? Higher or lower than 120?
01:09:53
Speaker
It was lower. Yeah, I remember, I thought i got a figure of 80 odd, but ah yeah, go, go lower. The answer is lower, but only just, it was 118. So only lower by two. Okay, so Kate and Julie, your starting number is 118. The minimum compensation per dog in US dollars for Korean dog farmers who closed their business ahead of the 2027 ban. Is it higher or lower?
01:10:19
Speaker
bam is it higher or lower than 118. That's the number of us dollars in compensation per dog if dog farmers close their businesses ahead of the 2027 value.
01:10:33
Speaker
I think it's higher. Do you? Yeah. Or is it? I kind of vaguely remember this one. I do remember it. I think it's higher. Do you? Okay. Go with you Go with you The answer is higher. 170 US dollars Dominic and Paul, 170 is the starting number.
01:10:57
Speaker
How much is a Greg's vegan sausage roll in pence? Higher. Oh, you think so? I think it's lower. I think it's about £1.29. Oh, God, now you're making me. I i don't think it's more than £1. I'm sure it's a couple of quid, Paul. Is it? Yeah.
01:11:15
Speaker
Oh, my touch i'll no, no, I'm doubting my very existence. Do you think it's two quid then or something? i I have bought a couple, but not many. So I i could be wrong. I thought it was really cheap, like 120, 150, something like that.
01:11:28
Speaker
Every time we disagreed, you've been correct. So I'm going to defer to your wisdom. I'm going to say it's lower. I'm going to say it's near a quid. The answer is lower, but only by five points. is £1.65, 2.25. Okay, so Kate and Julie, your starting number is 165.
01:11:49
Speaker
How many times more water is required to produce cow's milk compared to oat milk? How many times more water is required to produce cow's milk versus oat milk? Is it higher or lower than 165? It's a lot. It's lower, but that doesn't mean it's not, you know what I mean, a huge difference. But I think it's lower than 165 times. Yeah, almond milk is one of the higher amounts of water, isn't it? I think lower, Kate?
01:12:19
Speaker
Yeah, go on then. Yeah. Lower is correct. You're right, Julie, in that it's 13 times more water, which is obviously massively lower than our question, but it's still much more water production. Okay, two points to you guys. Okay, so 13 is the new number, Dominic and Paul.
01:12:38
Speaker
The maximum number of chickens per square metre in free-range laying hens in the EU. Okay. So in the EU, what's the maximum number of chickens you can have per square metre in a free range laying hen facility?
01:12:55
Speaker
Oh, my word. What a depressing question. Yeah, I think, I mean, this is testing my maths knowledge. So square metre and the number is 13. Do you know what? I think i think it's going to be something like 14.
01:13:14
Speaker
Let's go with higher. You're going for higher than 13, yeah? Yeah. I'm afraid that isn't right. that It is lower. It is 11. So it's still, ah ah like you say, Dominic, a depressing number of chickens in ah in a square meter, especially for a free range facility. But it is 11. Okay, Kate and Julie, your starting number is 11.
01:13:36
Speaker
How many years ago did Joey Carbstrong make his most viewed YouTube video? Is it higher or lower than 11? How many years ago did Joey Carbstrong make his most viewed YouTube video? Was that that one where he's oiled up and dancing? I don't know. That OnlyFans or not YouTube.
01:13:56
Speaker
I like that. I always get those mixed up. I don't know what his most watched YouTube video has been, Kate. No, I don't know either.
01:14:08
Speaker
The most watched or the most downloaded in a YouTube video as opposed to documentary? I mean, I'm just not sure. I think it might be lower. don't know about you. lower. Because he's become more one-known. If it's something like Pignorant or something like that, certainly shot up in fame, I think, after Pignorant. So I think go lower than a live-in. I think go lower too, yeah.
01:14:31
Speaker
It's correct. It was actually seven years ago, but that is lower than the previous number. Yes. Okay. Two points to you. Dominic and Paul, your starting number is seven.
01:14:42
Speaker
The average rating out of 10 on IMDB for C-spiracy, is it higher or lower than seven? oh Oh, so all the carnists rating it, Paul. Yeah, that's exactly what I thought. It could go two ways. could It could be all the pro-vegans rating it high and all the carnists absolutely getting on it and um slating it. And I've got a funny feeling it's going to be less. That's where I'm at. Yeah, lower.
01:15:08
Speaker
yeah I'm afraid it's no points for the punks. It is eight out of 10, surprisingly high. So well done, Seaspiracy. So final one then, Kate and Julie, the starting number is eight. It's only right that you have a Greg's question as well. The number of savoury options available at Greg's in the UK as of the 1st of December, is it higher or lower than eight?
01:15:32
Speaker
Do you mean savoury vegan options or just savoury? Thank you, yes, the vegan options. Yes, it wouldn't be much of a enough of the falafel question. that say yeah i No, no, no. I don't go in Greg's. Well, I don't either. But when you think about it, it's a bakery. yeah So there'll be lots of things in there that are just by default suitable for vegans, like rolls and bread and stuff like that. So I think higher than eight. savoury though not sweet things I know but bread and loaves of bread and rolls they're savoury and they're vegan in there I think I don't buy my bread out of there yeah if you're make if you're just talking about stuff that's suitable for vegans other than stuff that's actually got fake meat in it you know I think there's more than eight things in a bread they made such a big deal out of the sausage roll though But they sell other stuff in there. I mean, they sell a other food in there as well that is accidentally vegan. So I think more than eight.
01:16:39
Speaker
Yeah, I'm i'm not confused. If you're counting the rolls and the loaves. Okay, okay. Ant is being inscrutable on that one, though. He's not giving anything away. I'll go with you purely because I'm never, ever going in. I don't think there's more than eight fake meat things in there, but I think...
01:16:58
Speaker
Strictly speaking, there are more than eight savoury options you can buy in Gregg's that have not got animal stuff in them. I'm going to go over to Dominic and ask if he's ever seen a loaf of bread in Gregg's. No, it's definitely going to be fewer than that. It is fewer. It is five. Yes, it's even more processed than you might imagine, Julie. But the good news is at the end of that round, the athletes, you're on 30 points.
01:17:27
Speaker
ah Good news for you, that is, Julie. The punks, you are

Answer Smash & Limericks

01:17:30
Speaker
on 15. We are moving. That's a punk number, yes! We're now moving on to answer smash. This is a shout it out answer round. I'm going to give you an example of an answer smash in case you've never heard one before.
01:17:48
Speaker
So I'm going to ask two questions at once and then you need to smash the answers together. So this is a non-vegan example. I might say, which country invaded the Falklands in 1982? Who sang the Simply the Best?
01:18:02
Speaker
who sang the song simply the best And you would say Argentina Turner. It would be incorrect. And I will not give you the points if you say the equivalent of Argentina, Tina Turner. It needs to be smashed together.
01:18:20
Speaker
Oh, gosh. Oh, word. This is a poetry one, isn't it? poetry slammer in our midst will be happy with this one. The rest of us will struggle. but i' going to have to wait I'm going to have to write it down and then read it out like an old woman. To answer for your team, you need to shout out your team name.
01:18:43
Speaker
I will then repeat your team. I will repeat your name. So if Paul shouts out punks, I'll then say Paul. And as soon as I say your name, you need to give the answer because it is a buzz in round. As soon as your team has given an incorrect answer, you will be out of that question and it will go over to the other team, but i will impose a bit of a time limit. Okay, these are all vegan related answers in more ways than one.
01:19:09
Speaker
There are six of them, three points for a correct answer. The first two questions that lead to an answer smash. British YouTuber who helped found the Unity Diner and a green legume often used in stir fries.
01:19:34
Speaker
I got to this massively overestimated. Punk's earthling edamame. I will give you it Earthling edamame. Three points to the point.
01:19:44
Speaker
Cool. Oh, my God. Okay, the next one. Bold vegan techno musician. Root vegetable known for its deep purple colour.
01:20:01
Speaker
Punk. Yeah, Dominic. Moby-Troot. Correct. Three points to the punt. Yes! Get in there! This is our round! Yes! Okay, don't speak too soon. This next one, I think, is the most difficult.
01:20:16
Speaker
American rapper formerly of the Black Eyed Peas. Leafy green and grain with edible leaves and seeds. Ha ha ha!
01:20:29
Speaker
Leafy, go and tell me the the green bit. Leafy green and grain with edible leaves and seeds. Leafy green. Oh, athlete. Athlete, Kate. Athlete, hold on. Will I Amaranth. Will I Amaranth is correct.
01:20:46
Speaker
Yes. Well Kate. Yes. Okay, question four. Recently deceased chimpanzee advocate...
01:20:58
Speaker
Seasoning often used in Caribbean cuisine.
01:21:11
Speaker
This is going to be a kick yourself one, isn't it? It's going to be a kick yourself one.
01:21:19
Speaker
If you think you have no chance, then just say pass. um That doesn't apply for your whole team. Oh, I've got it. i think I've got it. Julie? Athletes.
01:21:28
Speaker
Jane Goodall Spice. Is correct. oh well done. Julie, we've all got one. It's nice, isn't it? Okay, this is the first one coming up now, question five, where one of the answers isn't vegan related at all.
01:21:45
Speaker
Geordie, owner of V-Bites and alternative stores who used to be married to a beetle. Raunchy series of novels. oh Oh, yeah. oh
01:22:04
Speaker
Athletes! Athletes! Heather Mills and Boone. Is correct. Heather Mills and Boone. Yes! Nice! Nice! And the final one. Founder and CEO of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
01:22:23
Speaker
A harsh, discordant mixture of sounds.
01:22:32
Speaker
Oh, Punks, Paul. Ingrid Newcocophony? Is correct. Very good. So we've seen a bit of a comeback in the Answer Smash round. The Punks are now on 24 points. There's a bit of a difference between the word Kirk and the start of cacophony. Got to think outside the box. to think outside the box.
01:22:57
Speaker
The athletes are on 38 points and need to watch that they're not questioning the referee too much, otherwise they might lose. Another poetic round now. Okay, this is the limericks round. I've got four limericks in front of me. I'm going to offer the first one to the punks, the next one to the athletes and so on.
01:23:18
Speaker
If you can correctly guess the news story after one line, you will get five points. If you can correctly guess it after the second line, you will get four points and so on diminishing. If you hear the whole limerick, then you will only get one point. Have you written these limericks? Are these your artwork? To an extent. To an extent. I had some help.
01:23:42
Speaker
Okay. AI wrote them. i I took, I helped, AI helped me get the first draft and then I changed it. So it actually scanned, made sense and blah, blah, blah, blah. blah Because at this point I'd already spent about four hours preparing this. Okay. Said with resentment. Yeah. Punks, you need to decide how many lines of the limerick you want to hear before you guess.
01:24:08
Speaker
I mean, I want to hear all of it. but You only get one point. i was A couple of lines, maybe. What do you reckon? We'll do it in two. two Yeah. OK. All right. So this is for a maximum of four points. I will offer it across if you are incorrect.
01:24:22
Speaker
In Iceland, the harpoons stay still. No whales meet a fate by their skill. So this is the story from the Faroe Islands that Joe and the Shit Boys were caught up in. But that's as much as I remember of it, that there was talk. just know that the punks I like are involved. That's the sum total of my knowledge. There was some talk. Isn't this one about where they refused to the or the tour? Yeah.
01:24:53
Speaker
isn't this one about where they refuse to do the gig or the tour yeah Joe and the Boys were... Cancelled were they because they actually said that they understood where the ah whale hunters were coming from. They gave a less then the the less less than platinum trophy vegan answer. um And I'm afraid your answer is less than 100% platinum because that is the wrong news story. I'm going to offer it across to Julie and Kate. You can decide to hear more lines of the poem if you would want, but um that would obviously reduce the number of points you get. Kate, I'm thinking this is just a straightforward story about whaling being sort of re-banned because it was banned and then it was allowed and I think it's been banned again.
01:25:46
Speaker
i remember that story. Yes, so do i Can we have those lines again? Yep. In Iceland, the harpoons stay still. No whales meet a fate by their skill.
01:25:56
Speaker
I think it's just a straightforward whaling ban coming into place again. Or is it, oh God, the guy that, oh, I don't know. Gosh, I'm trying to remember now. There's like one main wager there. Oh, you're thinking about the man that got arrested and all the rest of it. and The sea shepherd. Do we need another line?
01:26:19
Speaker
I'm going to come in. Seeing as this was not your question, I'm going to stop your deliberating further. You're not on the right track. I'll read the the rest of the limerick for any listeners who are playing along. So in Iceland, the harpoons stay still. No whales meet a fate by their skill.
01:26:34
Speaker
For the second year through, the oceans stay blue and the hunters are empty of thrill. This was the news from April this year, that for the second year in a row, Iceland, the country, is not doing any whaling. They're saying it's because of the global economic situation. Oh, God, that was my story as well. No point. But all the I said a ban on wheeling. No, it's not a ban. it The company decided not to to launch. So it was good news for Wales, but it wasn't a ban. um Athletes, here comes to your first limerick.
01:27:11
Speaker
How many lines of it would you like to hear? Oh, Julie. Okay, let's be safe and go for three. Shall we? Okay. god Mind you, the last three lines weren't very helpful on the last limerick, I'd say. They were a bit kind of...
01:27:25
Speaker
if It's like any quiz. If you know the answer, they were helpful. But if you don't, it perhaps... Yeah. Okay, hit the first three lines then. There once was a chef named Sophie who cooked with great skill and with glee.
01:27:39
Speaker
On MasterChef's floor... Yes, it's the ba it's the story of the the woman who... Julie, wasn't this your story?
01:27:49
Speaker
No, it wasn't, but I do remember it. I think somebody won MasterChef with a vegan dish, didn't they? oh Yeah, was it the winner or did she come runner-up?
01:28:01
Speaker
She did really blooming well anyway. She did. There we are. She did really well on MasterChef. got through to the final. Did she just get through to the final or something? Can we say that? I think she, yeah, was runner-up or something like that. Something like that. I Yeah, yeah, absolutely. and So this was ah Sophie Sugru, who ah was the runner up of MasterChef this year. um And she is vegan. The rest of the limerick. There once was a chef named Sophie who cooked with great skill and with glee on MasterChef's floor. She wowed more and more and proved vegan's food worthy degree.
01:28:43
Speaker
I clearly didn't make that one scan very well, did I? Okay, punks, onto your story. I remember it, I remember it. Yes, yes. We could got something for that. we She got through to the final. that's Yeah, yeah. That's what I said. Yeah, three points. You've got three points, Julie. so youre yeah Arguing the toss even when you've got the points. Right, punks, many lines do you want to hear? of i think we fine we gotta go we gotta go shit or bust i think don we should go for one line i reckon what do reckon wow yeah do you know what let's do it yeah one line okay a veg burger tried something new um ah i know this was uh was this i think it was beyond i might have the wrong brand that have basically
01:29:29
Speaker
now got their new range out that is not just fake meat, but they've mixed in much more ah whole foods and vegetables to appeal to the younger market. um I think it was beyond... um market It's not just younger market. It's about appealing to meat eaters. Yeah, yeah. as this Well, yeah. Making brands.
01:29:49
Speaker
more appealing. You've described the Beyond Meat story however you're overestimating my ability to convey a whole new story in a few syllables so that was the wrong one. Kate and Julie would you like to hear more lines and if so how many? Shall we go for a three or two? Yes come on let's do it. Nothing to lose. think that might help. A veg burger tried something new it called itself steak not tofu law makers frowned Oh, is this the EU story about them banning the banning terms?
01:30:27
Speaker
terminology that refers meaty names. I'm going to give that to you um in the name of brevity. Three points. Well done. Meaty names for plant-based. Yeah. So the full limerick. A veg burger tried something new. It called itself steak, not tofu. The lawmakers frowned. No meat names allowed. A ruling across the EU. Although, of course, it's not quite been officially put in law just yet as we record. Okay, athletes, your final limerick. How many like how many lines do you want to hear? Let's do three at least. We seem to need more lines because they don't get much information in each line. Okay, three lines for three points.
01:31:02
Speaker
A chef made a feast all plant-based with flavours no diner could waste from starters to plates... Oh, that'll be Alex Gauthier, won't it with it? Oh no, is that right? Plates? what's his What's his... Oh gosh, can we have it again? Sorry, my brain. chef made a feast all plant-based with flavours no diner could waste.
01:31:24
Speaker
From starters to plates... And I do... I wasn't on this show, but i do remember this story. Gonna have to push you. It's a guy it's a guy and he's got a chain of restaurants...
01:31:41
Speaker
I'm going to interrupt you and say that you're too far off the scent now. I'm going to offer it across to the punks. It was, well, it was Kirk who won the great British break with a menu thing. And then he's got the plates menu. don't know if it was the fact that he won with that fish dish that wasn't fish or whether it's him opening the restaurant. So it's maybe one of those, Dom. I don't know. One of those two.
01:32:06
Speaker
What do you think? Do you know what? I was thinking something completely different. but when yeah But when Anthony read it, I was like, oh no, it's probably not what I think. I thought it was the one where um where Prince William went over to a South American country and the initial offer was like loads of fish and they sacked the award-winning chef because it was a climate change thing and they brought in someone who did an all-vegan menu instead. So that that was what I thought it was going for. Oh, right, because it's the plates thing that made me think of the guy who owns the plates restaurant. um Maybe that's a red herring, but.
01:32:40
Speaker
I think the Ant's face says that neither of us are correct. um Out of festive generosity, I'm going to give the punks one point. I'm going to read the whole limerick that might tell you the true story. A chef made a feast all plant-based with flavours no diner could waste. From starters to plates, Kirk's fair was first rate. Michelin crowd it all. A good taste he got on Michelin star. That would have got you the second point. But you were much closer than the athlete. So one point for you there. At the end of our limericks round, the punks, you are on 25. Athletes, you are on 45. It's going to have to be one heck of a final round for the punks.
01:33:22
Speaker
there a conundrum for like 40 points? Do you know what? I was going to make the final round four points per correct answer, but I'm to change it to five because that gives you a mathematical chance of equalising. We'll start trying now. This is a round. So say your team name and then you'll need to answer straight away as soon as I say your name.
01:33:43
Speaker
I'm going to give you some things that are connected It might be the whole answer. It might be an acronym. It might be some sort of clue. And you need to shout out when you have worked out what connects all of these things that are vegan related. Okay, off we go.
01:34:03
Speaker
Shout out your team name if you know the answer. What connects these things? Billy, Brian, Joe, Macca, Will, Ariana.
01:34:16
Speaker
Punks, vegan vegan singers. Correct. Billie Eilish, Brian Adams, Joe Duplantier, Maccabee, Will.i.am, Ariana Grande, five points to the punks.
01:34:28
Speaker
okay Are they vegan or are they just plant-based? Yes. Okay. The next one. This is a bit harder. CFI, MFA, AWI, AJP,
01:34:42
Speaker
a w i a j p A A F P E T A Punks, paul acronyms for animal rights organisations. Yeah, I'll give you it. I think we could we could argue that some of them are ah sort of animal welfare organisations. But yeah, Cruelty Free International, Mercy for Animals, Animal Welfare Institute, Animal Justice Project, Animal Asia Foundation and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Another five points to the punks. OK, only four in this next list.
01:35:17
Speaker
Singapore, Israel, UK, USA. Punks. Paul. ah People that have... ah ah Shit. No, I got the wrong end of the... People that I thought it was a Eurovision thing and I went wrong with the USA. but Athletes. Yeah, Julie. I think it's got something to do with solene.
01:35:48
Speaker
Oh, you are so close, but you're not quite correct. It is countries where cultured meat is available it to people. So um Singapore, Israel and USA, it's for humans. And in the UK, it's in some pet food. Okay, two questions left.
01:36:08
Speaker
I will say that the athletes are 10 points ahead, but a decent mathematician will work out if the punks get both of these, they can draw a level. I have written a tiebreaker question.
01:36:20
Speaker
Here they come. Goodheart, Hillside, Tower Hill. Athletes! Yeah, there are oh and animal animal um animal um shelters.
01:36:32
Speaker
Rehoming sanctuaries, et cetera. Animal sanctuaries, yeah. Good Heart, Hillside, Tower Hill, Far Place. Okay. Five points away, punks. Five points away. And this is the last question of the quiz.
01:36:45
Speaker
What connects these things? Water. Sage and onion stuffing. Punks. Paul. ah They will be things that are used to make a Christmas dinner.
01:37:01
Speaker
I'm going to say no, so I'm going to read the rest of the dinner for... The athletes, water, sage and onion stuffing, pea fiber, pea protein, pea starch, wheat flour, shea fat, broad bean flour, methyl cellulose, flavoring, wheat gluten, coconut fat, dried glucose syrup, yeast extract, wheat starch, white pepper, black pepper, caramelized sugar syrup, yeast. It's probably the um the ingredients in something like a tofurkey or something like that, I reckon. Yeah, it's definitely an ingredients list of meat substitute. Yeah, a christmas Christmas roast meat turkey thingy as well. Yeah, I'll give you that. I did mention it on an episode that Kate and Dominic were on. I didn't read out the ingredients. That is Tesco's Plant Chef No Turkey Crown. yeah. offering

Final Scores & Reflections

01:37:57
Speaker
for 2025 was gonna say wait shows but you know so yes well very close run thing there but that does mean the athletes have edged it at the end 50 points to 40 very
01:38:19
Speaker
it but it it it got us on the edge of our seats
01:38:33
Speaker
Kate, you are the first time you have been a vegan quiz champion. How are you feeling? Oh, am I? Am I? Well, you're part of the team, not just you. i No, no. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Julie, yeah, yeah. Oh, I'm feeling great, yeah. Top of the world. got Speech, speech, speech. yeah Julie, that's that's two times in a row now. and ah People are going be asking, and can she do it again next year? Oh, she's going to try. Yeah. excellent quizzing a commanding lead you built up there um Paul it it wasn't to be that congratulations though that is a new record that is uh the first time anyone has failed to win the quiz three years in a row that's quite impressive consistency is my name so yeah very good and Dominic you get you gave a real good good fight there um but it wasn't to be in the end was it
01:39:31
Speaker
It wasn't, but like they say on the 1980s quiz shows, I've had a lovely time coming on the show. Do I a Dusty Bing little thing on my shoulder? We'll see what Stantik and Russell up for you, Paul. um So what we normally do at this point, as well as thanking Julie, Kate, Paul and Dominic for their time and good spirit in that little quiz there, is ask if anybody has a particular shout out particular message they would like to put out. I'm going to say that if you've not bought all your Christmas presents, maybe consider getting something local. If there's anyone near you who's like a local painter or an artist, I always think it's a really nice thing to support little businesses, even better if they're vegan. So

Closing Remarks & Holiday Wishes

01:40:18
Speaker
just a nice thing to support people who are, who are you know, striking out on their own. Indeed. Absolutely. Sorry, Dominic, I should have made it clear. This is going out on Christmas Day, so perhaps that's a New Year's sale. You might be giving Christmas money, mightn't you? Yes, spend all your money on small indie businesses. Yeah, buy my poetry books.
01:40:39
Speaker

Absolutely. Well, thank you all of you out there listening to our 2025 Big Vegan Quiz of the Year. We hope you've enjoyed it. Remember, for you quiz heads, ah episode 127 and episode 15 are also Christmas quizzes, although I will warn you, episode 15 was my worst ah day ever of the recording, editing this.
01:42:17
Speaker
in that 90% of the recording was lost so it's that equality is kind of quality comedy as well yeah yes indeed yeah it it was funny but most of it wasn't recorded so uh that recording is just me in the lake district just reading out the questions and the answers uh by myself But hey, um we will be back on the 29th of December and the 1st of January. That is a two-part special featuring Paul and myself and Shane.
01:42:42
