Speaker
Warning, the following discussion should not be treated as financial advice. Do not under any circumstances gamble with the picks and opinions made on this podcast regarding the Academy Awards.
00:00:26
Speaker
That being said, if you do, you're smart and cool and attractive. And if you don't, you're a wiener. Welcome back to Lost in the Frame. I am your host, Alex. I am the other host, Malik.
00:00:37
Speaker
I'm the other host, Tachi. And today is our fortieth episode.
00:00:44
Speaker
That's kind of a milestone, no? It it is. It is. i can't believe we haven't been deplatformed yet. It's coming. Maybe another 40 more episodes. Yeah, we're trying really hard to get off the air somehow.
00:01:00
Speaker
We don't want to do this anymore. Like, no one's making you guys do this stuff. Yeah, 40 episodes. That's crazy. That's crazy. Almost
Humorous Tangents and Format Experimentation
00:01:11
Speaker
at 50. What are we going to do for 50? Kiss. We got to do something.
00:01:14
Speaker
Oh. Kiss. I'm down. I just think we should roll with the idea that I pitched last night. We read all the Epstein files on a podcast and start from connecting the dots.
00:01:29
Speaker
We'll be in person. We'll have a huge whiteboard with red yarn. We'll basically live stream the entire thing. And the ah the entire time, all eight, nine, ten hours before they they come and kill us, that one song from the Incredibles is playing when Mr. Incredible is at the computer. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:01:49
Speaker
That's playing the whole time on loop. Great score, the Incredibles. score. Like, insane jazz score. Mm-hmm. I was thinking the other day, we had mentioned this before, but I do really, I still want to do like a Fortnite movie review stream or something. That'd be so fun. I think that would be a lot of fun. I don't know how it would work, but I really want to workshop that and try it.
00:02:16
Speaker
Yeah, so I really love the Incredibles. Oh, on your left, on your left. He's coming. He's coming. He's on me. He cracked. fuck, he's cracked. Hit for 18. Hit for 25. I'm dead. I'm dead. There's a little taste of what that episode can sound like. If that sounds thrilling to you, let us know if you want to hear that.
00:02:37
Speaker
I'm very excited for today's episode. We are talking Oscar
Oscar Nominations and Predictions
00:02:42
Speaker
nominations. The Oscars are in just a couple of months. um Our 19th episode was a very premature predictions episode for what we thought would be nominated. So we're going to review how we did there, as well as review the other nominations that are already set in stone.
00:03:00
Speaker
Maybe talk about who we think will win that night. Excited to get into it. let's get into the world of movie news before we get into oscar nominations kick us off a dog in true oscar tradition uh it seems like when someone gets nominated for an acting award they get announced for like a thousand different roles uh but this one popped up wagner moro who is nominated for the secret agent which we will discuss shortly uh is set to star in lissandro alonso's taste of cherry remake
00:03:33
Speaker
ah This one's really like bothersome to me and no one has any idea what I'm talking about, but I'm going to rant for like three minutes. Tasted Cherry is one of the great Iranian new wave movies.
00:03:46
Speaker
Okay. Directed by Abbas Kyrostami, which I've mentioned before in a rant. And... um The actor of this movie ah passed away like four months ago.
00:03:59
Speaker
So like body's not even cold and you're recasting him in a remake. Nobody asked for like who came out in the 90s. It's not that old. It's pretty widely available. Like i think it's on Max right now.
00:04:12
Speaker
um Why are you remaking it? There's no need to remake it. Yeah. Stop. you're not goingnna i I don't know who Alessandro Alonso is, and I would like to check out some of his stuff. Maybe he's got the sauce, maybe he doesn't. But you have no reason to remake this movie. And it's stupid.
00:04:30
Speaker
I think Wagner Moore would be really good in it, but... Like, come on, people. Get it together. Go watch Taste of Cherry. I don't really know Wagner Moore like
Movie Piracy and Rental Services
00:04:40
Speaker
um um want He was in Puss in Boots, The Last Wish. Was he... He's a cartel guy? He's the wolf. He's the death? Yeah. oh Spoiler.
00:04:52
Speaker
um I'm looking at Lissandro Alonso's filmography so we can see if we're familiar. ah This guy is not familiar. I don't know who this man is.
00:05:04
Speaker
Wagner Mora, you are right, Tachi. Wagner Mora is the cartel guy. and Narcos. Yeah. Oh, that's what meant thought you meant. um that you yeah I thought you meant a cartel guy in Puss in Boots, The Last Wish. i was like, um I don't know if there is one. Different Puss in Boots movie. Okay. It was really weird. Don't worry about it.
00:05:23
Speaker
so He was also in Civil War. Yes, he was in Civil War. He was good in that. Yeah. You need to watch The Secret Agent. yeah Yeah, you do.
00:05:35
Speaker
Have you seen it? Yeah. Where did you watch it? Is it in theaters? i It was playing at AFS. Okay.
00:05:47
Speaker
But I saw it on the internet. What do you mean you saw it on the internet? you Did you sail the seven seas?
00:05:59
Speaker
I plead the fifth. Wow. Okay, what is your guys' opinion on pirating? This is hypothetical conversation anyone listening. We will get deplatformed if we continue on this path.
00:06:13
Speaker
Would you actually... is that Is it really that bad? It's a hypothetical conversation. Okay, hypothetically, if I can't actually access something the right way, don't have a problem with it.
00:06:25
Speaker
I think it also depends on who I'm supporting. ah If i view it in the the normal way. Got it.
00:06:38
Speaker
What about... Let's say you're on like a you're wanting to catch up on
Blumhouse Productions and Horror Movies
00:06:45
Speaker
20, 25 releases, right? And all of these movies that you want to watch are available to rent, but they're all 20 bucks. Let's say there are 10 movies you will want to watch, and they are all $20, and you have one week to watch 20 movies. Are you spending $200 in a week to watch these movies at home?
00:07:04
Speaker
Or hypothetically, are you finding other avenues?
00:07:09
Speaker
No. know Just no? I'm not spending $200. Okay. I don't know what I would do, but I wouldn't spend $200. I might buy a couple of them just to like, and then hypothetically and find other routes.
00:07:28
Speaker
What do you guys think about the Letterboxd video rental store? I have yet to try it. I like the idea. there's one There's one on there I really want to watch.
00:07:42
Speaker
Which one? Soar a wife from the future. It's Indonesian. I don't understand how it works. How do I get it on my TV? I don't know, but it's $14.99 to rent this movie.
00:07:58
Speaker
I've rented movies for like $25. That is nuts. Yeah. That's what I'm saying. I've done it, and I'll do it, but sometimes I'm like... You used to be able to buy movies for $25. we're renting them for $25? Yeah.
00:08:12
Speaker
Like Amazon does, they have the entire section of in theater movies at home, which is nice. And I'm like, oh, there's bunch of good shit on here. And then I'm like, that's immediately a hundred dollars from the few that I want to watch.
00:08:26
Speaker
Yeah, that's crazy. Maybe we should have never decoupled the dollar from gold. We should not. Let's bring back bartering. Yes.
00:08:36
Speaker
A barter system to watch movies. I will trade Amazon ah freshly baked cookies for this movie. I have some... all Used chapstick. um I have a used tissue.
00:08:49
Speaker
Like 10 more sticky notes on this pad. What else do you guys have on your desk? Flashlight. i have a little chocolate me. This is me.
00:09:00
Speaker
Why is that you? And then this is Cam. She's a pancake. Brown. we we have It's a chocolate and pancake. That's cute.
00:09:13
Speaker
All right. Next piece. Elle Fanning movie. No, no. That's not what you wrote. That's not what you wrote, Billy. I didn't write this. Yes, you i did. Who put my name at the end of this? You did. Because you wanted to talk about this. There is a new Elle Fanning movie coming out in 2026. What is this movie called?
00:09:33
Speaker
Why do we care? Why do you care? No, why do you care? You put it on the list. I didn't put
Upcoming Movies and Public Reactions
00:09:39
Speaker
this on the list. You signed your name to it. that's You can't prove that that that's me.
00:09:46
Speaker
You cannot. Just digitally forensic. From what I've heard, it's an Elle Fanning movie where she is an OnlyFans star. And this is starring, I think, Nicole Kidman as well, if I'm not mistaken. Our AMC queen.
00:09:59
Speaker
Yeah. I think I saw some screen grabs. um not sure I don't remember what the movie's called. Whoever put this out ah as in a note just put Elle Fanning Gooner movie and expected us to know everything about it.
00:10:13
Speaker
It was you. it was not me. You're wearing the hot dog costume. oh um Give me this one first. What is the exorcism at 1600 pen?
00:10:27
Speaker
um So Blumhouse is... ah Bloom? Blumhouse? thought was Blumhouse. Blumhouse. Move on.
00:10:38
Speaker
The studio that's spelled B-L-U-M-H-O-U-S-E ye is adapting a movie called The Exorcism at 1600 Penn.
00:10:52
Speaker
ah It follows the president when the White House becomes a supernatural battleground for good versus evil. This will be Blumhouse's first documentary they have ever produced. stupid That sounds kind of cool.
00:11:08
Speaker
um Yeah, but it's Blumhouse. i feel like they've had some bangers. I mean, they're just a production house. Let's look up... Less. Is there... let's a List of... Five Nights at Reddy's.
00:11:25
Speaker
Blackphone. Blackphone? Paranormal Activity. Like BOG1. N2. N3. And Insidious. Okay. Sinister. Paranormal Activity 4.
00:11:40
Speaker
Oh, The Lost Bus? It's all horror movies and it's The Lost Bus. What's that? The Matthew McConaughey movie where he's driving a bus through the fire. It's nominated for something. We'll talk about it. It it has one um nomination, so we are going to have to watch it.
00:11:58
Speaker
It's, oh, what is it? Visual Effects? They made The Green Inferno, which was Eli Roth's fake version of Cannibal Holocaust. Apparently terrible. They did Black Klansman a few years ago.
00:12:09
Speaker
Huh. Ooh, the purge. They did split. The first purge, the forever purge. They did get out. I think the first 2013. Get out. I'm saying there's a movie called the first purge. Oh, the forever purge. Yeah. Got it. Um, glass. Yeah. Get out. That was great.
00:12:24
Speaker
hmm. Split. Happy death day.
00:12:33
Speaker
Megan and Megan 2.0. Ma? Prey. Don't make me drink alone. Oh, wait. No, that's not the right Prey. That is a different movie called Prey. I don't think it looks that good.
00:12:47
Speaker
Speak now. Oh, Upgrade. I don't know if you guys have seen Upgrade, but that's a fun one. The Invisible Man. i The Invisible Man was the last movie I saw in theaters before COVID shut everything down.
00:13:01
Speaker
How was it? I liked it. People hated it. There's a horror movie called They Them. it's ah It's called, I think that's the one with Kevin Bacon.
00:13:12
Speaker
It's pronounced They Slash Them. ah what a i think it's a great name. I heard the movie's not good, but I'm like, that's a really good name.
00:13:23
Speaker
The Exorcist Believer. That's interesting. Still haven't seen it. not Night Swim. Didn't you watch Night Swim? I did watch Night Swim. I think I watched that on a plane. Bad.
00:13:36
Speaker
Wolfman. Wolfman also bad.
00:13:40
Speaker
So they got some hits. They got some hits. They're producing the Mike Flanagan The Exorcist. I'm a little ah hesitant with that one. Who's Mike? I'll be seated.
00:13:53
Speaker
ah He's the one who made Haunting of Hill House, Bly Manor. Got it. Okay. What's the other one that I like? ah The vampire one.
00:14:05
Speaker
Midnight Mass. name Midnight Mass, yeah. Midnight Mass with ribs. Have you guys seen it? No. haven't seen any of those things. It's got my boy Matt Saracen from Friday Night Lights, though.
00:14:16
Speaker
What a throwback. Missed that guy. Great show. Not the only Friday Night Lights alumni we will talk about today. Yeah, I definitely know what we're talking about for sure.
00:14:29
Speaker
um Great transition here. Rest in peace, Catherine O'Hara. Yeah. That ruined my day. I feel like that came out of nowhere. People were on the plane like finding out after I saw and I just kept hearing it. like Whispers around the plane. I don't think I've ever heard that many people talk about like a celebrity death in public as it was happening than that one. i don't really like i feel like if I had to pick a celebrity death that would do that, it wouldn't have been Catherine O'Hara.
00:14:59
Speaker
Not to like you know disrespect her anything, but I was just like surprised at how many people were actively talking about it at the airport. I feel like she just has like a couple roles for everybody. like I think she has a very extensive filmography, and I think each person can pick one or two where they're like, oh. like Even if they're not like super aware of her, they're just like oh, no, I loved her in that.
Controversies in the Film Industry
00:15:22
Speaker
like Very easily you can pick. I mean...
00:15:25
Speaker
Home Alone, Kevin's mom. She's the voice of Sally in The Nightmare Before Christmas. Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice. I watched Schitt's Creek for the first time last year, and she's excellent in that. She was just in the studio.
00:15:39
Speaker
he lost a good one. First big loss of the year. Big bummer. She was in Chicken a Little? Yeah, she played. Okay, why is she so far down on the list? Who did she play?
00:15:50
Speaker
Not Chicken a Little. What on earth? Oh, Tina, the alien mom. Small role? I think so. Really small? Like one scene?
00:16:01
Speaker
She will be missed. She will be dearly missed. Sinner's cinematographer reveals she will reunite with Ryan Coogler on his X-Files series. I'm cool with that.
00:16:12
Speaker
I'm cool with that too. Is there more news on that? Like when it's... Getting a release for X-Files. Yeah. No idea. OK. We're getting an X-Files reboot and a Miami Vice reboot.
00:16:25
Speaker
We're back. Before you watch the OG X-Files. I love it. Same. I've never seen it. um I watched Sinners for a third time. I think I texted you guys about it.
00:16:39
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
00:16:42
Speaker
That's where I'm at. We'll talk about a little bit more. ah What else we got? Well, we're dancing around the one that we skipped. i Yeah, no. no No one's dancing on El Fanny here. Yeah.
00:16:59
Speaker
The Safdies. Yeah, let's talk about it.
00:17:03
Speaker
What is... ah how are you guys feeling? These guys... i'm not happy. They're on my shit list now. Yeah. I'm not happy at all. That's really unfortunate. And I very i think both of them are very culpable.
00:17:15
Speaker
Yes. the So for those who don't know, an article came out recently. You know, I mean... Like... Oscar mudslinging is not anything new, but this one was pretty bad.
00:17:30
Speaker
Yeah. Article came out saying that on the set of good time, um, that when both Josh and Benny Safdie were on set, uh, even though the article like was like, Oh, Benny was just holding the boom mic.
00:17:45
Speaker
Apparently, ah buddy duress who is, who had just gotten out of prison at the time, I believe, who's like not a real actor. um but I thought was really good in the movie. ah Like sexually harassed slash assaulted maybe an underaged ah actress that was like part of the set and like the scene while they were filming.
00:18:13
Speaker
So it was like a scene where Buddy Dress' character is like with a prostitute and they had like this underage girl playing it. Now, um apparently...
00:18:26
Speaker
the like The article said that Josh Safdie knew that she was underaged, and this producer that they worked with knew that she was underaged. and But Benny Safdie didn't know that she was underaged until Emily Radjikowski, who was married to the producer, brought it up when they got divorced.
00:18:49
Speaker
And then he learned, and then that's what caused the split between the Safdie brothers. Now, Here's my problem with this story. I think it sanitizes Benny way too much. Yeah.
00:19:03
Speaker
Because if you're on set and you see something like that happen, and i don't care if she's 18 or 17, like, if she's clearly uncomfortable with it and you put her in a situation where maybe she wasn't prepared for it, you're culpable for that.
00:19:16
Speaker
You are a co-director of the movie. I don't care if you were holding the boom mic. Yeah. Like, you're not that far removed from the situation. He's really not. And the article almost seems like it was leaked by him.
00:19:32
Speaker
And it was like, oh, well, he didn't do anything bad, right? He's fine. But, like, no. I i have a problem with both of it. And it sucks, because I loved Good Time.
00:19:43
Speaker
Same. I love Uncut Gems. And I love Marty Supreme. Yep. Which Josh did. Now, like, it does seem awfully convenient that...
00:19:55
Speaker
this comes out when and i'm not saying it's fake that's not what i'm saying at all i'm just saying it's super convenient this comes out when josh safty is up for best director and this article that absolves benny came out after his movie got blanked at the oscars like let's be real here yeah i don't like it like i think this whole thing stinks it's a terrible situation i feel awful for that girl that scene never made it into the movie thank god um But no one seems like it.
00:20:27
Speaker
I mean, it just it just it gives me the heebie jeebies. It's icky. It's just it's icky all around. um i yeah, it's going to I don't know what the feeling is going to be for like any like future movies that they have like coming out. But like this is a really big stain. And just Benny's in the Odyssey.
00:20:44
Speaker
Oh my god, yeah, that's right. He plays Agamemnon, I think. Yeah. Fuck those guys. Yeah. Really unfortunate. I'm pissed. I thought they were great. Same. I thought they were the greats.
00:20:56
Speaker
And then, I thought one of them was better than the other, to be to be fair. But we only had one sample size for that. But, ugh, I just, I hate it. Why can't these people be normal? It's like, oh A little on topic, but in the Epstein files, the second batch came out.
00:21:13
Speaker
Yeah. And Mira Nair, Zoran Mamdami's mom, who directed Mississippi Masala, Monsoon Wedding... um the namesake, uh, among others, she was in them.
00:21:27
Speaker
What? Yeah. And I loved the, I love her work. I love her movies and she's in the files. She was like head of, she was at like some head of some film gala, like personally invited Epstein and Ghislaine and oh my god all of those people. And then that was like 2008. And then,
00:21:45
Speaker
and then So then after Epstein got like officially convicted the first time, she was at a private screening of a movie with him and a couple other people in like 2018. Wow.
00:22:00
Speaker
And I'm like, I love Miranair. What are we doing? Are we in the bad place? yeah What is going on here? I'm sick. I'm sick to my stomach.
00:22:11
Speaker
All these people suck. Just bad people all around. Back to the sappy thing real quick. I just feel really bad for the girl because she's probably she was probably at a point where she thought that nightmare was behind her.
00:22:24
Speaker
And now it's like really come to light. It's just comes out of like a smear campaign, but it feels like it's going a lot bigger than that, which yeah I mean, hopefully it doesn't. I hope like justice is brought.
00:22:36
Speaker
I mean, did she be like what I want to know is, did she even consent to the story being put out or was it just put out? From what I saw, this story actually like was released publicly, I think sometime last year or like a few months ago, but it looked like it didn't get that much traction for whatever reason. This is still an insane story. I don't think it was fluffed up or anything, but now the attention is just on it because of the it Oscars season right now.
00:23:02
Speaker
i I thought that's when Emily Ratajkowski started talking about it in the divorce proceedings.
Oscar Predictions and Analysis
00:23:09
Speaker
When was the divorce? um I don't know. Okay. We do a lot of research on this podcast. That's fine. We don't know we don't have to know everything. um Yeah, I hope but justice is brought. um And it's ah it's fuck the safeties, I guess.
00:23:25
Speaker
We're upset. We're upset here. But we kind of keep, we'll try to keep the good times going. Yeah. We'll talk about things that the last thing is, think it's still, we can still celebrate Timmy's work and his performance. For sure. So, I think that's hands along. Still a lot other hands that go into making a movie, so it's not to disregard an entire film.
00:23:49
Speaker
the It's just another situation where you have to separate the art from the artist, and that yeah sucks. It sucks. You can't have anything. Let's do it, guys. Nominations.
00:24:00
Speaker
All right. So we're going to... First, you guys want... We're going to go over our predictions from August. So that last... That that ah that episode was August 26th. Way before, like, even a lot of these current nominations came out.
00:24:15
Speaker
Right. um We'll go... We'll start there? Yeah. Let's do it. All right. So...
00:24:23
Speaker
Let's see here. We tried to predict what was going to be nominated for these categories. Visual effects, adapted for writing, original writing, animated feature film, directing, cinematography, actor in a leading role, supporting actor, actress in a leading role, supporting actress, and best picture.
00:24:42
Speaker
Let's start with visual effects. We predicted sinners, Avatar, Fire, and Dash, Superman, Minecraft, and Tron.
00:24:53
Speaker
What were we thinking with the Minecraft movie? Minecraft and Tron. Okay. Tron did cook. Tron did. i think minecraft was ah i think Minecraft was a bit, if I recall correctly, but I don't know. We might have been serious. I also will say that for all of the Minecraft movie's flaws,
00:25:14
Speaker
It did have a lot going on in the visual effects department. like I think it did a pretty good job of blending the Minecraft world to real life. like It didn't look like homeless Jack Black was standing in front the green screen.
00:25:26
Speaker
All I'm thinking of is the shot of Jack Black and Jason Momoa flying in the air, kind of like implying sex between the two. That looked bad. You guys have to see that. Everyone listening has to go watch this movie. You don't.
00:25:41
Speaker
ah The Jennifer Coolidge villager bit is actually really funny. I have to say. I hit you with my cheap Grand Cherokee. here Here is what was actually nominated for visual effects.
00:25:55
Speaker
Avatar Fire and Ash. We got that one. F1. i guess we should have known. um Jurassic World Rebirth. Shouldn't have known that. No one should have known that. Yeah. Blackraft was a better pick than that.
00:26:11
Speaker
The lost bus. There we go. All right. There we go. We brought it up. Matthew McConaughey is the lost bus. And then we were also correct for sinners. Woo. So we had two of five. Correct.
00:26:23
Speaker
What is that? 40. 40%. That's 40%. There's a common theme in here. We we hit a lot of 40%. Yeah. As an MLB batting average, we did really well.
00:26:35
Speaker
I don't understand that. Like our baseball batting average. Well, I get that, but like that. So that's good. If we hit 40% of our. Yes. hitting That's good. Hitting 20% is like amazing.
00:26:47
Speaker
Okay. if If you hit 40% of your at bats. You're a guy. You are like the best player in baseball. um What do you guys think of F1, Jurassic World Rebirth, and The Lost Bus?
00:27:01
Speaker
I haven't seen The Lost Bus. Can't comment. Jurassic World Rebirth. I won't comment. F1. Yeah, it was pretty good. Yeah. Sure. i I hate that Jurassic World Rebirth is here.
00:27:16
Speaker
I'm curious to see why the blackmail. Someone's. I'm going to go search the ex Epstein ducks for Jurassic World Rebirth.
00:27:29
Speaker
yeah what's What's the lost bus real quick? what Like, what is it? Yeah. All I know is that heard of Matthew McConaughey is bus driver. And America Ferreira.
00:27:40
Speaker
And America Ferreira. Just found that out. And it's on Apple TV. Yep. um That's the extent of my knowledge about the lost bus. They're driving a bus full of kids through a wildfire in California. And apparently it's a true story.
00:27:57
Speaker
Okay. Neat. Yeah, I'll check it out. Do you guys plan? go ahead. i sad I love McConaughey, so I agree. I'll check it out. Yeah.
00:28:08
Speaker
You like mud? I love mud. Dude, mud. I love mud. a good movie. Mud rips. Mud is so good. Yeah. Anyway. um Do we want to pick our favorite for visual effects or do you want to move on?
00:28:26
Speaker
i think we should I think we should just move on and then we can go back and... Okay. Make our pick. Got it. Writing. Adapted. One of you guys want to do this one? I'll do this one.
00:28:37
Speaker
ah Writing. Adapted. Screenplay. We got one battle after another. Hamnet. Smashing Machine. Frankenstein. And Begonia. We hit 4-5 on this one. Hell yeah. Really good.
00:28:48
Speaker
Yeah. Smashing Machine was, I think, a fair guess. I mean, it did win in Venice. for best film yeah and it was adapted and then what did we lose out on ah train dreams train dreams i didn't know train dreams was adapted i didn't either i don't even know what it's adapted from a book called train dreams awesome love that i also i don't think we picked train dreams for one thing we talked about it we brought it up there was a list we had at in that episode
00:29:23
Speaker
um It was a list of movies that we thought could be talked about, but had not been released yet. We were going purely based off of, I think, Festival Reception. And I remember Train Dreams was on it.
00:29:35
Speaker
We knew Joel Edgerton was in it, but I don't think we knew much else. Right. We talked about it, but very briefly. not an Man, it's beautiful. It is. You liked it?
00:29:46
Speaker
I loved it. Bro, people hate it on Twitter. What? What? Yeah, I think it's a Terrence Malick ripoff. Yeah, like it's just a Terrence Malick ripoff. I don't know what that means, but Twitter definitely is like an homage to Terrence Malick. I liked it. I thought it was a very vulnerable movie.
00:30:03
Speaker
Yeah. All right. Tachi, take us to original screenplay. but Original screenplay. We guessed Sinners, Marty Supreme. Then it kind of dips. J. Kelly, rental family after the hunt.
00:30:18
Speaker
We unfortunately had a lot of after the hunt. We did. yeah We invested in a lot of stuff. Have you seen it? No. Have not seen it. Yeah, same. 40% again. so that's good.
00:30:29
Speaker
Hit on sinners and Marty. Okay. ah We missed out on Blue Moon. It was just an accident. And Sentimental Value. Why didn't we put stock? I don't think we put a lot of stock in Sentimental Value.
00:30:43
Speaker
Should have. We put some. Which we'll get to. Yeah.
00:30:52
Speaker
is i I'm surprised Blue Moon, I mean, I guess it does. Because Blue Moon, I think, is like, mean, it's based on a real event. Yeah, but it's like fictionalized in a way.
00:31:07
Speaker
like kind of I guess fictionalized in a way of like the actual conversations and it's obviously a very conversation heavy movie. So... Yeah. i yeah I wouldn't count I don't think it's a category fraud or anything like that. ah i like that it got nominated here. Did you have you did you watch it I watched the plane yesterday.
00:31:24
Speaker
Oh, okay. What'd you think? I liked it. I liked it too. yeah I made a meme about it. On what? I made a meme about it about the movie, about the last 30 minutes of the movie. I'll send to you guys later. Probably post it to the pods Insta too. Okay.
00:31:38
Speaker
It's funny. Okay. I'm excited to see it. might just like post it. Not on our story, just post it. um Any other thoughts for original here?
00:31:54
Speaker
it's It's a good movie, but it's not Oscar worthy. You know what I mean? I think I like Jay Kelly probably more than your average Joe. What about your average good.
00:32:15
Speaker
um i guess I guess I agree with you. I guess so. like At the end of the day, it kind of does feel like it was a quote-unquote Oscar bait movie. like It seems like the type of movie that the Oscars would eat up, you know?
00:32:28
Speaker
Yeah. And they just did not take the bait whatsoever. Thank goodness. um ah Kind of an inspired pick to pick Rental Family.
00:32:39
Speaker
liked it. It was sweet. It was a really sweet movie. Apparently not.
00:32:47
Speaker
Just kidding. And then after the hunt, none of us have seen it yet. Has anyone seen it? people I think people have seen it. I haven't heard anything good about it. Right. ah All right.
00:33:00
Speaker
This next category we did pretty good on. Animated feature film. We guessed Elio, Zootopia 2, Arco, K-pop Demon Hunters, and Nei Ja 2.
00:33:14
Speaker
Which honestly is a good pick. I think that's really good pick. surprised didn't hit. Yeah. We had four out of five on this one. We're awesome. We rock.
00:33:25
Speaker
The nominees for Animated Feature Film are Arco, Elio, K-Pop Demon Hunters, Zootopia 2, and the one that we missed, Little Amelie or the Character of Rain, which I actually have not heard of. Who is that?
00:33:37
Speaker
I brought it up to you right before we started recording. I know, but like I still don't know what it is. Same. The French? I don't know.
00:33:51
Speaker
Awesome. I almost went and saw it one day and said didn't. Have you guys seen any of these besides ah K-pop Demon Hunters? I've seen um Elio. How was It's good. Is it Pixar?
00:34:05
Speaker
ah I think it is, yeah. yeah It's good, not great, which kind of describes their last 10 years. I need to see Zootopia 2. I need to see Arco. Arco's in theaters now, so I need to go do that. Oh, nice.
00:34:17
Speaker
Directing. we i Our picks were Ryan Coogler, Chloe Zhao, Paul Thomas Anderson, Luca Guadagnino. I got to learn how to pronounce that name. That was pretty good.
00:34:30
Speaker
And Benny Safdie. We hit three of five on this one. I think we should hit three and a half out of five. For the Safdie. Yeah, for we did get a safety, but it was not the right safety. Why did we do that?
00:34:43
Speaker
What? Why did we do that? I think we were. the The hype was high for smashing. We were excited about smashing machine. i think all of us were. Yeah, I guess hindsight's 2020, but like that just.
00:34:57
Speaker
Stupid. Who were we?
00:35:01
Speaker
ah The ones we got right were Ryan Coogler for Sinners, Chloe Zhao for Hamnet, and Paul Thomas Anderson for One Battle After Another. And the ones that we missed out on were as follows.
00:35:16
Speaker
Chloe Zhao for Hamnet, Josh Safdie for Marty Supreme, Paul Thomas Anderson for one battle after another, Joachim Trier for Sentimental Value, and Ryan Kubler for Sinners.
00:35:28
Speaker
So we missed Sentimental Value, and then half of Safdie. Yep. Yeah. Not bad.
00:35:36
Speaker
I like this category. Yeah. What were you going Nothing. Nothing. Nothing good. You better say a slur, weren't you?
00:35:51
Speaker
What did it start with? What did it end with? yeah Next ah category. Cinematography. Cinematography. We did not do very well on this. We did bad.
00:36:03
Speaker
We did bad on this real bad. Um, I don't think it was like, i don't think our process was wrong. Cause there are good picks in here.
00:36:15
Speaker
Yes. But our picks were the one we hit on with sinners, the remaining ones, f one 28 years later, Hamnet and Jay Kelly. Jay Kelly's in a a crazy pick here. um I gotta to admit, I'm sorry.
00:36:30
Speaker
The ones we missed out on, Frankenstein, Marty Supreme, One Battle, and Train Dreams.
00:36:42
Speaker
I'm filled with so much regret. The One Battle one is sickening. yeah If we had seen it, it would have been... Are stupid? How did we not pick that? That's crazy. We haven't seen it.
00:36:52
Speaker
But still, like we it it was a Vibes podcast. It was a Vibes episode. But like, come The vibes for One Battle have always been high. We should have known. Yeah. It's PTA.
00:37:05
Speaker
Oh, well. We should have known. At least we hit on Sinners. Yeah. and And I mean, 20 years later was great. Really well shot. But... I think the hope... that i mean...
00:37:19
Speaker
Going into this and then obviously now seeing how often Sinners was nominated, I think gave us a little bit of hope for 28 years in the horror category. i'm like, oh, maybe they will give it a nod. And if they do, I think it would be cinematography.
00:37:34
Speaker
I think that was a very inspired choice for us. Have you both seen Hamlet? No. I have. Do you think it deserved our our nomination? No. Not that it was shot bad.
00:37:46
Speaker
But just the others are better. It's not like a like a cinematography movie. Got it. Okay.
00:37:53
Speaker
um The only one on this category, and I like Frankenstein, but I don't know if it should have been nominated for cinematography. I don't think so. It only should have. It looked weird at some points.
00:38:07
Speaker
Man. Darn it. Oh, well. All right. Only one for that one. Only one for this one, too. We kind of, from this point on, we kind of did really bad. So let's talk about it. um Actor in the leading role.
00:38:23
Speaker
We hit for Leo in one battle after another, obviously. Here were our other picks. Oh, no. I just saw the low one before Leo. Dwayne Johnson in The Smashing Machine.
00:38:35
Speaker
Brendan Fraser in Rental Family. George Clooney in Jay Kelly. And Daniel Day-Lewis in Anemone. I don't think anyone saw anemone. I'd still want to see it. I still want to see it. It's on my list. I do still want to see it. I've heard not good things at all. so um here is Here are the people who were nominated for actor.
00:38:58
Speaker
ah Timothy Chalamet for Marty Supreme. Fucking stupid. Leo for DiCaprio. ah Ethan Hawke. Leo for Leo for DiCaprio.
00:39:15
Speaker
Good pick. Good nomination. Leo for One Battle. Ethan Hawke for Blue Moon. Michael B. Jordan for Sinners. And Wagner Mora for The Secret Agent.
00:39:27
Speaker
ah Let's talk about our picks before we talk about who was actually nominated. What were we doing? what What?
00:39:37
Speaker
The worst part is I watched the Smash Machine. I was like, this is pretty good. We whiffed. Yeah. I was like, Dwayne Johnson actually like did really well in it. We still whiffed.
00:39:49
Speaker
He didn't campaign for it at all. No. Which is weird, because this is like his attempt at a breakthrough dramatic role. I thought we'd see more of him post-movie leading into the Oscars, and I feel like it was just... Maybe you just knew.
00:40:05
Speaker
The guy can cut a promo. Why didn't he cut a promo for this? i listenos the rock is telling you you need to nominate this movie he said the hierarchy of the oscars is going to be forever changed um brendan fraser in the rental in rental family i think it's crazy it is crazy it's such a heartfelt sweet performance but it's still not I think we were just thinking of the whale.
00:40:34
Speaker
Yeah. And that year, and maybe maybe this was him starting to become like an Oscars darling. But kind of crickets from the Academy on this one.
00:40:44
Speaker
Yep. How we didn't pick Timmy. when We're so stupid. With the Marty Nam, he tied Marlon Brando for like most...
00:40:58
Speaker
Oscar nominations by a someone younger than it was like 30 or something. Wow. Three. Damn. Or 35 or something. Yeah, bro's 30.
00:41:11
Speaker
So maybe it was 30. That's so crazy. What were we? We. We just didn't believe in. mean, Dale Day-Lewis is a good bet. Like, it's Dale Day-Lewis.
00:41:22
Speaker
He's probably the best actor of his generation. Come on. Yeah, but we should I think we should have taken into context the actual movie. Regardless, we haven't seen it, but it was him coming out of retirement to act in his son's movie.
00:41:38
Speaker
Like, I think the writing's on the wall on that one. I don't know. The best original writing or best adapted writing? Best attempt. Original. Original.
00:41:51
Speaker
Attempted. Best attempt at writing.
00:41:58
Speaker
um George Clooney Jay Kelly. He's really charming as always. Yeah. But I think more than anything, I would have liked to see Adam Sandler and Jay Kelly for a supporting. And I think we actually, we did write that down for the next one.
00:42:16
Speaker
um So we can go to supporting actor. Sure. And that's me, supporting actor, Adam Sandler and Jay Kelly. We bought a lot of stock in Jay Kelly and we need to go into foreclosure. we tom Stellan Skarsgård in Sentimental Value, Sean Penn in One Battle After Another, Jeremy Strong in Springsteen, Josh O'Connor in The History of Sound.
00:42:41
Speaker
ah We hit on Stellan Skarsgård and Sean Penn for One Battle After Another. Yes.
00:42:49
Speaker
We, meant we made some crazy wits. We did. But this one, this one I think is a little bit more forgiving for the ones that we missed. I think, well, I haven't seen history of sound, but I think Joshua Connor for a wake up. Damn man. Would have been a better, i think that would have been an inspired pick. I agree. Yeah.
00:43:08
Speaker
That would have been that and that was Best Actor. Yeah. And and it would have been based. It really would have been based. um Who actually got nominated before we dive into this one? Yeah.
00:43:22
Speaker
Benito Del Toro, One Battle After Another. Jacob Elordi for Frankenstein. Delroy Lindo for Sinners. Sean Penn, One Battle After Another. And Stellan Skarsgård for sentimental value.
00:43:35
Speaker
Before we launch into our analysis... Do we think when they do the award during the Oscars, when they play the little bit of what, like like a little snippet of their acting in the movie i hope before they give the award, do they do the Stephen Lockjaw, do you like black girls scene?
00:43:58
Speaker
I love black chicks. I love black girls. We need to check Kalshi. Yeah. yeah I'd love if they did. I'm not gay if that's what you're implying. i want, yeah, just the voiceover of all those lines with him doing his Terminator walk at the very end. It's like five minutes long. Him banging down the door with the battering ham to Oscars, if you're listening, we're available for hire, by the way.
00:44:27
Speaker
gotta start walking like that.
00:44:31
Speaker
No, you don't. Like just walking around the neighborhood. Like, that guy's a freak. Yeah, you're gonna get arrested. I live here.
00:44:43
Speaker
Somebody shoot that guy. um yeah Yeah, okay. I stand by Adam Sandler and Jay Kelly. I would have liked that.
00:44:54
Speaker
Yeah. Honestly, i would have liked that over Jacob Elordi for Frankenstein. Oops. That one's... Yeah, that one's kind of an inspired pick. I think that...
00:45:06
Speaker
I hate to say it. I love Delroy Lindo in Sinners. I love him in Sinners. I feel like this one is also just kind of like a legacy pick. think Because he's never been nominated until now.
00:45:18
Speaker
I'm not mad at that nomination. I'm not mad. I'm not mad, but I feel like it's one where I'm like, ah. I can't complain about it. I'm not complaining, but I just feel like when I saw it, was like, whoa, really? Okay. I...
00:45:34
Speaker
okay I like it. I like it the most out of any of the other actor nominations for Sinners. I like it more than Michael B. Jordan. I like it more than One Me it for playing Annie for supporting actress. Well, here's what I'll follow this up with. I think he's top two performances in the movie.
00:45:53
Speaker
Yes. Who's number one? Oh, I'm not saying it's one or two, but I think my two favorite were him and Jack john O'Connell. O'Connell. I'm with you. I would have liked to see Delroy Lindo or Jack O'Connell for this category.
00:46:10
Speaker
i I've only seen it the one time when we saw it in theaters. yeah I remember more of Jack O'Connell than Delroy. I think if you rewatched it, I would remember more Delroy.
00:46:22
Speaker
He is because he's obviously more subtle, not being the main vampire. It's grand. Yeah. But every line he reads, I think, is really
Breakout Performances and Oscar Considerations
00:46:32
Speaker
good. I mean, it's Delroy Lindo. like He is one of my favorite scenes in the movie. It's the beer scene.
00:46:37
Speaker
The beer scene. Oh, my God. Yeah. He cracks it open. He's a hold up now. Literally, was like immediately, that's me. um and Me on six after my ninth beer. just oh I crack open a Miller Lite.
00:46:52
Speaker
See, a cold beer sounds so good right now at 12.30 p.m. I'm trying to lose weight, and it's it's tough not having beer. Damn. Nice Coors. I'm down from 208 this morning and I was 218 when I started. so oh let's go. That's great.
00:47:07
Speaker
Good shit. yeah Nice. Excited for your journey. Yeah. i was I was a fat loser and now I'm a fat loser. Okay. Whoa. Love yourself, man.
00:47:18
Speaker
We love you very much. Don't say those things. um We also put stock in Springsteen a little bit. Jeremy Strong. I don't think we put stock in it because we were thinking it was going to be good. I think we put stock in it because it seemed like something the Oscars would put stock in. I don't think any of us were particularly excited for the movie. I love it The Boss. I've seen it.
00:47:40
Speaker
um And I don't think I want to. I'm fine. I'm glad it didn't get nominated so I don't have to watch it. I love Bruce Springsteen. I had no interest in watching the movie. I think that's the craziest part. I remember you saying that and I'm like that then I don't know what it is about the movie because like for you as a fan of the man not wanting to watch it like that's actually kind of crazy.
00:48:02
Speaker
like just It was about him writing Nebraska and like i mean hot take for me. It's one of his most highly regarded albums is not my favorite Bruce Springsteen album.
00:48:13
Speaker
Like I need to listen to it again. i do need to give it a re-listen, but like it has not gripped me like some the other ones. I just, I like the storytelling on some of his other albums better. Like, and I think, I don't think it did at least the trailer, cause I still haven't seen it. i don't think the trailers did a good enough job of like giving us that Bruce Springsteen, like Americana, like blue collar feel that I think it could have done.
00:48:38
Speaker
It just looked like every other generic rock star. Yeah. Do you think it's the movie, like just like the subject matter overall, or do you think Jeremy Allen White has anything to do with it? Do you guys see him as a leading man?
00:48:53
Speaker
i do. I think it was actually a solid pick. Okay. but i don't know if I don't know if I see him as a leading man like that. I'm undecided.
00:49:06
Speaker
it's a weird It's a weird thought process. I feel like this is the first, maybe his like biggest role, but again, like I just wasn't interested in watching it, so maybe that's why and he needs something else. I don't know.
00:49:21
Speaker
All right, moving on. who just Who did Supporting Actor? I'm next. Okay, cool. So we've got Actress in a Leading Role. We guessed successfully Jesse Buckley and Hamnet and Renat rain rainsby i think rainsby sure ranati but yeah the leading actress from sentimental value uh we whiffed on julie roberts and after the hunt of course Cynthia Erivo in Wicked 2.
00:49:53
Speaker
Felicity Jones in Train Dreams. I feel like we missed on Felicity Jones in Train Dreams because she's not in the movie that much. No. and She just got nominated for... Yeah.
00:50:07
Speaker
I think it was a good pick. I'm surprised that for Train Dreams, this is the category that we picked. Agreed. But it's hindsight. Yeah. Yeah.
00:50:18
Speaker
yeah We're just freaking for Felicity. And then who do we have that was actually nominated? Right. So we've got Rose Byrne in If I Had Legs, I'd Kick You, Kate Hudson in Song Song Blue, and Emma Stone in Bugonia, which I think those are all good picks.
00:50:41
Speaker
Except for Kate Hudson. Yeah, I actually don't know about Song Song Blue. either. I've never or heard of it. My mom loved it, and she loved Kate Hudson in in it. I feel like that came out of nowhere.
00:50:53
Speaker
Over Kate Hudson, I would have liked... Actually, I don't... I don't know. I know. Oh.
00:51:04
Speaker
Go ahead. I know. Tell me. My girl. Chase. oh Chase. jason and Our pick. You don't think she'd be supporting? she was gino Chase was getting nominated for Best Actress like this whole award season. That's right, yeah.
00:51:22
Speaker
Because I remember thinking like we got it we actually called our shot, got it right, and but for the wrong category. Yeah. yeah because She was getting Best Actress noms. I was like, oh my gosh, like we are so good.
00:51:36
Speaker
um Because I didn't know how much she would be in But... but we We got it wrong. Do y'all think the Oscar should add a category for like breakout star?
00:51:48
Speaker
That's something that I've seen people talk about. It's not a bad idea. Yeah, that could have been a category for Chase. That could have been a category for Miles Catton for Sinners. Yeah. I'm sure there's someone in Marty Supreme.
00:52:01
Speaker
The big girlfriend. Odessa Zion. Yeah, was that like her first film role? I don't know. She was in at ke till Dawn. Okay.
00:52:12
Speaker
okay That's still like a breakout role, though. You know, like a break. I feel like a breakout role category would be really cool. Yeah. Like a. Okay. She was in Marty s Supreme Until Dawn. Am I OK? And Hellraiser are her top four on Letterboxd.
00:52:25
Speaker
Okay. Yeah. She just. Minor roles in those, I'm sure. None of these are like real movies. So, yeah. Marty Supreme was big breakout role. um I'm a big fan of Rose Byrne in If I Had Legs, I'd Kick You.
00:52:38
Speaker
I need to watch that one. So much so that i I'm putting my personal opinion here. I kind of want her to take it out of everyone here. I do like the Emma Stone pick, but I don't know if it's enough for me.
00:52:54
Speaker
She was here. Here's a crazy take that we can die. We can unpack later. She was it was the right movie to pick for the wrong actor slash actress. I think so.
00:53:06
Speaker
I agree. Because we know Emma Stone will get nominated again in the future. Of course. i It's like they forgot to nominate a fifth and they're like, oh, fuck. Put an Emma.
00:53:18
Speaker
She's due. I think it was Kate Hudson for forgetting the fifth.
00:53:24
Speaker
They're I've heard of Kate Hudson seems to be like, they were like, we've got to nominate someone nuts. And I know they don't all get in a room and discuss this like the college football playoff committee does, which would actually be incredible if they did. huge...
00:53:40
Speaker
Do we know how many members are in like the body of the Academy voters? It's a lot. Hundreds? I think so. That's why people, where it's so funny where it's like, oh, the Academy has this agenda. It's like, there are so many of them. Yeah. And they their their agenda is they kind of just have terrible opinions half the time.
00:53:59
Speaker
Or they just don't watch the movie. They don't watch the movies. I know there are some Academy members that are like dedicated to watching all the movies. Like I think Ariana Grande just got in ah like last year a couple years ago. And she's been on record saying that like she will make sure that she watches every single one.
00:54:15
Speaker
Which I appreciate. um Kirsten Dunst is also one of the ones that advocates pretty loudly for for watching every single one. Which like if you're a member that should be a requirement. And they should check.
00:54:26
Speaker
I think Sean Baker, I think he's an Academy member. He watches every single one because for a while there on his letterbox, he was tagging his watches with ah Academy Screener. So cool. That's cool. I know.
00:54:39
Speaker
So jealous. We just have to make a Nora. A Nora too. ah I don't think that's going to go over well if we're the ones doing it. um there was something i wanted to say here oh uh wicked 2 completely snubbed this year like no love is snub the right word no wicked two found dead in a ditch yeah it was a little disappointing of a follow-up but It was just surprising following like I feel like there was so much love for Wicked last year. It was nominated for best picture for Christ's sake. It came and it went for sure.
00:55:19
Speaker
Yeah. It happened. It happened. um Me for a supporting actress. you cool yep all right we're our streak of doing bad continues we got one out of five here we put aod for in after the hunt laura dern and j kelly emily blunt in the smashing machine chase infinity in one battle after another this is where we put her and l fanning and sentimental value We hit on Elle Fanning.
00:55:53
Speaker
We missed for Inga, Ip's daughter, and Sentimental Value as well. Amy Madigan for Weapons. One Mimo Saku for Sinners. And Tiana Taylor for One Battle After Another.
00:56:07
Speaker
Good for Amy. It's really surprising that a horror movie is getting this sort of limelight. um I'm shocked she was the one who got the nom, especially when we had like hereditary get blanked.
00:56:20
Speaker
She was pretty prominent this award season for getting this nomination. like Weapons was around. I'm surprised that yeah that it went all the way all the way here.
00:56:32
Speaker
i don't know if it'll take... But ah if she did, that's got to be like a legacy pick somehow. Yeah, I'm i'm happy to see it. Like as if if horror is making an appearance at the Oscars, like I'm happy either way, you know, for sure.
00:56:51
Speaker
What do you guys listening this is a hot take? but I don't I think this might upset maybe both of you. I don't think I want John Taylor to win.
00:57:01
Speaker
oh You're done. Wow. You're done, kid. That is a hot take because I'm pissed. I don't know. She's my pick for this. like She is my pick for this, too. Like, far and away. Yeah.
00:57:15
Speaker
Like, I liked her. It was a great performance. I don't have any complaints other than she should have been in the film for longer. um When she was in the film, though, she commanded the screen. I think...
00:57:28
Speaker
her her Her screen time isn't the issue. It's where in the movie her screen time is. If it was scattered through the whole thing, I don't think people would complain as much. That's fair. It was first half dominant.
00:57:39
Speaker
Yeah. It was lumped in like the first sex like quarter. Yeah, first quarter of the movie. Oh, true. That is a hot take, and I respect your opinion. um Tell me, who's your pick in this category then? Tell me, Tachi. it's It's not a wouldn me. I'm sorry.
00:57:58
Speaker
And I haven't seen sentimental value. So racist. He said one of me, definitely not. Definitely not. I, and as much as I like, uh, Amy's performance, I don't think it should be her.
00:58:15
Speaker
She was real freaky though. um i don't know i i need so so far it's no one so someone else winning right i'm sorry fine i'm sorry it's okay it's okay i had to say it it's i respect it and and the winner for best actress is none of these people your best supporting actress
00:58:39
Speaker
all right last one
00:58:43
Speaker
Our best picture. I am sad that we did not do well on this one. This is 30%. A lot of whiffs. lot of them.
00:58:55
Speaker
Alex? Yeah. I'm just looking it over. Okay. Best picture. One battle after another. Sinners. And then it falls off.
00:59:07
Speaker
The Smashing Machine. Jay Kelly. Springsteen. After the hunt, Avatar, Fire, and Hash, Wicked 2, It Was Just an Accident, and Hamlet. It was just an accident. Snubbed.
00:59:21
Speaker
Actually snubbed. Yes. it like That was a based pick. Agreed. And I'll give you, I'm saving another super base pick from that movie for another snub for when we dive into it a little bit more.
00:59:36
Speaker
Okay. Because, but Smashing Machine, we were high on our own supply. Same thing with Jake Kelly. Same thing with Springsteen. I mean, Springsteen, I think we were, i think we even said we didn't think this was actually going that great. I know we didn't like picking it for the few times that we did.
00:59:55
Speaker
um I just want to, I want to go back in time. I want us to remember the Smashing Machine trailer. It was so good. Guys, that was a really good trailer. It was. But.
01:00:08
Speaker
I understand where we were. I i forgive us. I stand by my stance that it just didn't have sauce. Yeah. It was boring. Um, Jay Kelly, whatever, moving on after the hunt, after the hunts of crazy pig, actually.
01:00:25
Speaker
Um, I think, too yeah, I think, We can be forgiven for Wicked 2. I think we were just going historical. think we can be forgiven for Avatar, Fire Nation. We can also be forgiven for Avatar because this is the only Avatar movie not to be nominated for Best Picture. So I think we just assumed it was a shoo-in.
01:00:42
Speaker
yeah um Would have liked to see Avatar over F1. Yes. yes Speaking of which, the actual Best Picture nominees were Begonia, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, Sinners, and Trained Dreams.
01:01:08
Speaker
We really had no hope in Marty Supreme. Which is crazy because we were super stoked about it. Yeah, like what happened? It's crazy. But I don't think anyone had even seen it at that point.
01:01:20
Speaker
No. So we we knew nothing to expect. And like the marketing hadn't even kicked off. All we knew was Timothee Chalamet ping pong movie directed by a safety with Josh bone.
01:01:32
Speaker
With Josh Bone. Oh my god. Boneheads rise. Where are we? I can't believe we haven't talked about that. We haven't talked about Josh Bone in a while. And we didn't talk about Josh Bone in the Marty Supreme episode of all things. Damn.
01:01:45
Speaker
miss that Josh Bone, we're sorry. Yeah, we're we'll look at your IMDB later. We'll see if you got anything coming up. See if we're going to be in an audience member or something this year. um Okay, we hit on one battle.
01:01:57
Speaker
We hit on Sinners, and we hit on Hamnet. How do you guys feel about the Best Picture nominees? I like them for the most part. I do, too. um F1?
01:02:12
Speaker
i don't I like F1. I had a good time with F1. But it's not a Best Picture movie. it's It is not... anywhere close to being a best picture and it wasn't even like how Top Gun was a best picture I feel like it's a it's a for fun pick like it just it's whatever you know same I i don't love Frankenstein either I didn't love that pick either also don't love it I think I liked Frankenstein the most out of anyone on this pod and with the nominations it got I'm still like I don't know about all that
01:02:50
Speaker
I think that no other choice getting snubbed is crazy. I've heard nothing but amazing things about it. Park Chan Woo has never, ever been nominated for an Academy Award.
01:03:04
Speaker
Not for best foreign feature, not for something technical, not for script or screenplay, not nothing. And I don't know why.
01:03:15
Speaker
I was listening to another podcast and they were talking about um a little bit more of the history of him and his lack of nominations. And they're trying to figure out exactly why. And it sounds like everyone's kind of just stumped by it.
01:03:30
Speaker
I saw the only explanation I've seen is that he's kind of like a Alfred Hitchcock acolyte. Okay. and the Academy also hated Hitchcock. Hmm.
01:03:42
Speaker
That's the only thing where I've been like, I i guess. Who puts the term of him being a Hitchcock acolyte on on him? Like, is he self-proclaiming? or I don't know. I just saw that he was a Hitchcock acolyte. They're like yeah like like, fuck that guy then. Him in particular.
01:04:00
Speaker
Maybe just ahead of his time. Maybe. Probably. Probably. Um, yeah, no Marty Supreme stock for us whatsoever. so Really sad. I don't know how valid we are as a pot anymore.
01:04:14
Speaker
Okay. Park Chan credits his filmmaking career to an Alfred Hitchcock classic. So clearly he. That's stupid. He has taken inspiration from him. Maybe one day.
01:04:30
Speaker
Yeah. Maybe next year ah There was something you wanted to talk a little bit more about, Alex, with this category. What was it? We just talked snubs. Okay.
01:04:42
Speaker
I want to talk snubs because I think it was just an accident. Also had just as much of a right to be in this category as no other choice. Yep.
01:04:53
Speaker
For the best foreign feature that gets put into best picture. Yeah. It was a really good movie, but my so and we can transition into snubs with this.
01:05:06
Speaker
ah I think a snub that is super out of left field, but I think she really deserved it, was ah the supporting actress from It Was Just an Accident, ah Miriam Afsari. Who does she play?
01:05:27
Speaker
The short-haired lady. The photographer? Yes. She's very good in that movie. She was crazy good in that movie.
01:05:38
Speaker
I don't think she got like any love from anywhere. And from what I can tell, she's like a fairly amateur actress. she's noah I don't think she has another credit on Letterboxd. Yeah, actress in one film.
01:05:51
Speaker
Wow. I think the Oscars should make that category, the breakout role.
01:05:57
Speaker
Because obviously be yeah on a it's not limited on age or gender. Yeah. It's just. Who's new? great Who's new? Who's up and coming? Who should we keep an eye out for?
01:06:10
Speaker
And my other snub is Jesse Plemons in Bagonia. Agreed. That's a big one. I would have preferred... Okay, so Sinners has grown on me for you, the listener, to know.
01:06:25
Speaker
It went up one... It went up half a point. Yeah, half a point, which is, like I think, a lot compared to like how everyone else is loving the movie. We've talked about it extensively.
01:06:38
Speaker
um I would prefer Jesse Plemons over Michael B. Jordan. Michael B. Jordan is great in Sinners. I just, I don't know what it is. I just don't really agree with that nomination.
01:06:53
Speaker
What do you guys think? I don't know. I need to rewatch it. It's been a long time. it's I'm getting close to a year now. You should. Yeah. Try it Yeah. At least watch it before, before the Oscars. But I really think I would have preferred ah to see Jesse Plemons over Michael B. Jordan. Yeah. He was awesome.
01:07:12
Speaker
He's so good in it. He's just always good. Also, the brother or the cousin Begonia could have been another great nominee for breakout role. Yep.
01:07:22
Speaker
Oh, yeah. ah Well, we did okay. We were stronger in the beginning, I feel, but some of these snubs are crazy from us.
01:07:36
Speaker
What are we? I mean, how do we feel about some of the other categories that we didn't predict for?
Oscar Nominations Discussion
01:07:42
Speaker
Let's take a look. I mean, for me, I'm thinking about like best music, like original song, best score.
01:07:51
Speaker
let's Let's talk music for a little bit. Let's go original song. um The nominees for original song are Dear Me from Relentless.
01:08:03
Speaker
From Diane Warren, Relentless. Diane Warren, Relentless. Okay. What is that? I it's a documentary about Diane Warren who never has been nominated, I think, the most times out of anyone for an Oscar and has never won. Yeah. she ah Golden from K-Pop Demon Hunters.
01:08:20
Speaker
I Lied to You from Sinners. Sweet Dreams of Joy from Viva Verity. Train Dreams from Train Dreams. What the hell is Viva Verity? I don't know. I'm not going to watch a movie for a song.
01:08:34
Speaker
Alright, we need to be real though. Is Golden winning or is I lied to you winning? I actually think that is the tightest race. gold i don't think it's tight at all. I think Golden's winning. I think it should be I lied to you for a more inspired pick.
01:08:50
Speaker
I think really tight. I could see it going either way. Golden has been sweeping this season. Okay, and Chase Infinity was getting nominated and then look what happened. But Golden's been winning.
01:09:01
Speaker
Okay. And... yeah and Golden is like a significant piece of history. So what what is your pick Tachi?
01:09:15
Speaker
I don't know. I think the Academy is really growing on Ludwig. So it's pretty tough. Pretty, pretty tough. I gut is telling me golden. Uh-huh.
01:09:29
Speaker
I think I'm happier if it's, I lied to you. Got it. I'm with you. Okay. Gut, golden, happy, I lied to you. Yes. I'll agree with you on that.
01:09:40
Speaker
All right. Score. Nominees, Bugonia, Frankenstein, Hamnet, One Battle After Another, and Sinners. um Three out of five of these, I think, are really great picks.
01:09:57
Speaker
Any guesses on which ones those are? Sinners in One Battle. I think are two of the five or two of the three. yeah haven't seen Hamnet. What's the third, do you think?
01:10:11
Speaker
I'm going to guess Borgonia for you. You're a little weird, so. You're correct. Oh, I'm so good. The Borgonia score is so good, guys. I really like that. I really like that pick. Well, good job, Jerskin.
01:10:26
Speaker
Good job, Jerskin.
01:10:30
Speaker
What's your guys' pick here?
01:10:33
Speaker
I feel like it has to be sinners. i I think so. Really? I think so. but They got so many nominations. They have to win these tertiary categories.
01:10:44
Speaker
Good word. Thank you. um I don't know if used it correctly. I hope so. how i I'm not the one to correct you. um I also do really like the sinners score.
01:10:57
Speaker
I think yeah here's the thing. Oh, I think Sinners overall is the better soundtrack, but I think One Battles has a higher high with the sound the song they did for the the homing beacon.
01:11:12
Speaker
and especially when they incorporated it into the soundtrack yes that for me is is peak i think it also i oh go ahead oh you go ahead i was gonna say it feels so integrated with the movie because it feels like it never stops in one battle yeah so the p n that's another plus for me i agree oh my god This is a good category.
01:11:37
Speaker
I feel like this could go either way. I'm trying to get into the mindset of the hundreds of Academy members there are. um And I honestly don't know where where this one will go. um But I find myself listening to specific songs on the Sinner's score a lot more frequently than others.
01:11:57
Speaker
The Smokestack Twins one. Oh my god. It's so good. It plays for a long time in the movie when I watched it and I was just like in awe. Guys, that movie the movie grew on me. I can't deny it.
01:12:10
Speaker
That's good. That song is playing while they're sitting on the car rolling the cigarette and passing it off and i was just like... Fuck, man. It got me.
01:12:23
Speaker
I am a big... i love the blues. I love that guitar, and I love just that like deep south, like, delta heat. I'm loud to you. There might be a cricket or two in the background.
01:12:36
Speaker
um Yeah, cicada buzzing. It's flat and dusty. You don't know where the dust came from because it's really green everywhere. so are you guys picking one battle or sinners i'm going just said i'm picking sinners okay okay and i just i didn't remember are we gonna do another review of our our friend i think we need to like i don't think we're gonna I'm not going to finalize any of my picks today. I have a lot of thinking to do. i still have movies to watch. i would like i don't I don't know if we should because we're going to watch the Oscars together. We're going to do the printout sheets. We're all going to make our picks.
01:13:12
Speaker
I don't know if we should keep it. like that h No, we should keep our picks. We should announce this the of. okay so we don't want so We're not going to pick together as a podcast. We're just going to do personal. Whoever wins, okay wins.
01:13:27
Speaker
All right, we're just so we're just making our picks public this time. We will make our picks public. Yep. Okay. I like that. Let's talk about a couple of these other ones. Makeup and hairstyling. Nominees Frankenstein, Kukuho.
01:13:40
Speaker
I think that one, everyone was saying it's such a crazy nom that it actually like probably should win it. I don't even know what that is. I'd never heard of it. Japanese movie.
01:13:52
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. But from the screenshots I've seen, it actually probably deserves the win. Oh, it's like Geisha type stuff. Okay. Kakuho.
01:14:03
Speaker
Other nominees. Sinners. Here we go our stock is Our stock is going up. The Smashing Machine. And The Ugly Stepsister. Never heard of that one. Same. I heard of that one. i think it...
01:14:18
Speaker
had a premiere at fantastic fest last year it's a horror movie um i do plan on watching that one and kukuho are you guys gonna watch the movies that you haven't seen i'll try to yeah yeah i think the like so far the only one that i don't think i'll watch is maybe viva verity for a song i think i think i'll just listen to the song I think I will say I don't really want to watch the live action short film called Two People Exchanging Saliva because I hate that title so much. Interesting.
01:14:54
Speaker
Do you think it's between Sinners and Frankenstein? For makeup? Yeah. I feel like Frankenstein takes it. I think Frankenstein takes it. That one is one I'm i'm happy with Frankenstein taking.
01:15:11
Speaker
I'm happy with Sinners. We'll see. Okay. So now you're picking Sinners to win stuff after you were just like, we cannot have any of those people winning. afters Real quick. How do you guys feel about Sinners being the most nominated movie in Oscars history?
01:15:29
Speaker
I don't think it should have been. It's kind of crazy.
01:15:34
Speaker
I fear it might have an, an unintended negative impact on like its legacy.
01:15:42
Speaker
Because maybe they're trying to prop it up. it's I feel like it's speed running to like the everywhere, everything all at once where it's like enjoy this before everyone tells you it's bad. Yeah.
01:15:55
Speaker
And I enjoyed both. i I still think either of those getting like the amount of nominations and for everything, everywhere all at once wins that did is crazy. I liked him, but i just liked him.
01:16:06
Speaker
That a good time. But I have a great time. I think I liked everything everywhere a lot more than sinners. I am with you on that. I loved it. I did too. I did love everything. don't know. I guess so I was happy. I was. I am one of the ones that was like actually really happy with that win.
01:16:22
Speaker
Me too. I thought it was just too quirky for its own good. I thought it was fun. like i thought it was a fun pick for the Oscars. yeah I like the Oscars might have a history of being a little stuffy, like and that was just anything but.
01:16:38
Speaker
I'm stuffy right now. I'm a little stuffy as well. Me too. um What other categories do you guys want to talk about? Let's talk international feature film because I think this is one of the strongest it's ever been. Okay.
01:16:51
Speaker
Take us to it. So we got Brazil's nominee was the secret agent. Very good. Very good movie. Wagner Mora, I think not getting a lot of love for his performance. It's a very good performance.
01:17:04
Speaker
I would be upset. I'm saying like in like the not awards, but like people talking. Got it. Like I haven't really heard anyone talking about this performance. I think it's very good.
01:17:17
Speaker
Like, if he won, i wouldn't be mad. And I think if Ethan Hawke won, I wouldn't be mad either. He was very, very good in Blue Moon. Yes. Very short. So short. How'd they do that?
01:17:30
Speaker
How'd they make him so small? He has back problems after filming that movie. For sure. um But I digress. ah France nominated. It was just an accident. And the fact that France had to nominate an Iranian movie is crazy. It is crazy.
01:17:43
Speaker
But it kind of adds to the lore because I'm pretty sure Jafar Panahi is in prison right now. He is. Which is nuts. Yeah. I don't know. if he I don't know if he's there right now, but I know he is.
01:17:57
Speaker
He has been there. Yeah. Yeah. He is not a stranger to the guy's got a crazy story. I you guys should all look it up. I want to look more into it. I know. I know very surface level things about him.
01:18:09
Speaker
Yeah, he's. ah Yeah. I mean, Wikipedia says his career has been inextricably marked by conflict with Iranian authorities.
01:18:20
Speaker
Like he just makes things to like poke him now. Yeah. I mean, it was just an accident. It's no different. He has with new sentences such as the in absentia prison term decreed in 2025.
01:18:34
Speaker
So I think if he ever went back, he would immediately be arrested and go to jail. like He is not home. like He is not in Iran. He cannot go back to Iran. Because he will be arrested.
01:18:46
Speaker
He will be arrested immediately. What an artist. Yeah. All he does is poke their buttons, and i think it's great. um Norway nominated sentimental value.
01:18:56
Speaker
I think that this is one I just don't get for international. No, I mean for just in general, like the whole time I've, I watched it. I'm just like, Ooh, okay. Like this is fine. I'm with you.
01:19:11
Speaker
Tachi, that one, you, you gotta watch quit. Yeah. Yeah. i like stone. I thought like I didn't think there was anything wrong with the movie. I was just like, okay, it's just fine. It was just fine. Yeah.
01:19:23
Speaker
ah Spain nominated Sirat, which I have yet to see. Same. And then Tunisia nominated the voice of Henry Job, which is probably the most upsetting movie I think I've ever seen in theaters.
01:19:38
Speaker
I mean, it was OK. It was a crazy theater experience because at the end of it, a like the whole time you hear a pin drop like no one talked. And then by the end, when like the credits were rolled and everything went black, like you just hear people like weeping um like in the theater. Multiple people.
01:19:57
Speaker
go out in the hallway and people are like... Like, literally. Yeah. But it wasn't like, oh, it was you know it made me cry. It was just like, oh my god. like Heavy. it was Yeah, it was heavy. Yeah, I don't know anything about it, and I'm going to keep it like that.
01:20:14
Speaker
I'm going in blind. As blind as I can. Okay, I won't say anything. yeah it's I think it's probably the most important movie on the list. In terms of like its actual like importance. What it says, what it's doing.
01:20:29
Speaker
I don't know how to rate it. I have it as number one right now, but it's like I don't feel like it actually should be there. Just because it's like, I don't, I don't, I don't know what I feel about it. I think it's very well done, but it's number one for like your list.
01:20:43
Speaker
Yeah. Of last year. Yeah. Oh, wow. Well, but, but then it's like, would I ever watch it again? Like, no, like not in the slightest bit. Like, do I feel weird about the movie? Yes, I do. It's weird. Like I didn't enjoy it, but it sounds like it moved you.
01:21:00
Speaker
It's very moving. Yeah. If it didn't, I'd say got a problem. Yeah. to Get some ah some therapy fired up. but um I digress. What else you got for international?
01:21:15
Speaker
That was it. It was five. Film editing. F1, Marty Supreme, one battle. Sentimental value sinners.
01:21:26
Speaker
It's a fine category. Yeah. Good choices. Yeah. No complaints. Are you guys, so I know like theaters will typically release um like a slate of short films and you can watch them like back to back.
01:21:42
Speaker
Are you guys interested in doing that? I've done, that I think I did that once one year. It was fun. Yeah. yeah It's like two hours total, five short films maybe in one sitting.
01:21:53
Speaker
Sounds fun. I think we should do that. I think that'd be cool. Um, so I want to get familiar with those. i do want to get familiar with the documentaries. The only one for documentary feature film that I have seen is the perfect neighbor.
01:22:06
Speaker
and that's only one I'd have actually heard of. Um, that one I think is on Netflix. Which that was ah that was ah that was a crazy one. um I enjoyed it as much as I can enjoy it. um So I don't know, don't have any deep opinions in documentary feature film category. What about casting?
New Oscar Categories and Industry Trends
01:22:28
Speaker
Let's talk casting. Our brand new category. Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, and Sinners. um What...
01:22:40
Speaker
I'm a little confused on this category. I'm curious, like what you guys think goes into casting, like what makes it good?
01:22:50
Speaker
Or is it just vibes? Like, I don't know. wonder if it's kind of vibes, kind of like how the performances are across the, the entire cast.
01:23:02
Speaker
ah um Like is the overall quality high, not just someone carrying the whole movie. I don't know. But if I had to guess, it's probably going Sinners. If we're going off of your definition that you just gave, I would give that to Sinners.
01:23:19
Speaker
I think for that reason and also because it got so many nominations. I think it just has to win these the other stuff. I think you also kind of have to give some nods to Marty Supreme, though, for it.
01:23:35
Speaker
Just for because of how many like non-traditional actors were in it that were really, really good. agree Even if one of them did threaten to kill Timothee Chalamet. who Who did that?
01:23:47
Speaker
I don't it was like like a random extra I guess had like just gotten out of prison common theme with these people on safety sets. Yikes. And he was like I'm gonna kill you Timmy if you don't stop doing this. And they're just like oh okay. And Timmy was like I i need help.
01:24:02
Speaker
That's that story. It's crazy. Wow. Let's see here. Any of these other categories you feel like we should cover. For sound, I just want to say I still think Warfare got snubbed. The biggest snub, arguably. yeah I'm with you guys on that one.
01:24:20
Speaker
F1's fine. ah Frankenstein, I think, should have... I think that took the place of ah of Warfare. Frankenstein for sound, like what?
01:24:31
Speaker
i don't understand i don't understand that nomination. i wanted to talk about the amount of movies that are nominated. i Because it feels like it's a lot of like the same like five movies.
01:24:45
Speaker
And I brought up a list of the amount of movies in past years that were nominated. So for this year, there were 51. Last year was the least amount of movies at 50 nominated.
01:25:01
Speaker
In 2023, there were 53...
01:25:03
Speaker
um The most in the 2020s was in 2020 with 56 movies. In 2016, it was 62. Like from 2016 and earlier, it was low 60s, high 50s.
01:25:19
Speaker
And then now it's kind of just dwindling into low 50s. That's because they're making less good movies. ah That's what I wanted to ask. Like, what do you think happened?
01:25:29
Speaker
think Think about it this way. Spider-Man 3, the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man 3 was a comically bad movie for its time. Yep. It's pretty good. i had a good time with it. Like, it's solid.
01:25:42
Speaker
But that was like a universally panned movie. But why? i think they're making, I think movies are getting worse because I think art is getting worse because it's getting more commodified. There's more studio input for big bucks.
01:25:56
Speaker
Yeah. Studio execs are a huge problem lately. Yeah. I just thought that was an interesting thing. Cause I was like, I just feel like we keep seeing the same thing in every category. I've seen, I've seen the argument that there are fewer good movies lately.
01:26:10
Speaker
a i don't know. I feel like the highs can still be really, really high, but it is, it is hard to tell just like across the board. just in general, if there are like, like with our rating system, if there are fewer fours than 20 years ago.
01:26:27
Speaker
Yeah, I get what you mean. So it's high highs and low lows. We need more middle. Yeah. Yeah, sure.
01:26:38
Speaker
Okay. All right. Let's make one. Let's let's make one. Last thing to end it off, a discussion on the on Best Picture. we don't have you don't have to We don't have to say what our personal picks are, but I think it's between two movies, and I wanted to get a temperature check if you guys think it could go in either direction.
01:27:00
Speaker
Obviously, the top picks are One Battle After Another or Sinners. Do you guys think that Sinners could actually take Best Picture?
01:27:12
Speaker
I think it could. Anything's possible. and Do you think it will? Like in my head, I'm thinking it's a sweep with one battle after another for best picture, but I'm actually not so sure or confident.
01:27:28
Speaker
So what I alluded to before that, like I have a gut feeling about how the Oscars going to go I actually think for a lot of the prominent categories, I think one battle is going to sweep.
01:27:40
Speaker
I don't think it's going to be sinners. And that's why I'm calling for sinners to get all these, i guess, like less highlighted categories. I think one battle is just going to sweep.
01:27:51
Speaker
I don't think one battle takes best actor. I'll tell you that much. But I actually agree with you besides that. So you think one battle takes like directing cinematography, the more top of the line ones? Yeah. Yeah.

Okay. Yeah. At least that's my feeling right now. Yeah. Would I be upset if Sinner's won? i don't know. no Okay, I guess upset's the wrong word.
01:28:21
Speaker
and i would be I would be very happy for everyone that worked on it. Yeah. Is it deserving of the others? Maybe not. I don't know. I would be happy for everyone that worked on it except for this one guy who did like this one thing for set design. I hate that guy.
01:28:39
Speaker
Screw that guy. That guy's the worst. He's so bad. Get him out of here. Losing my neighbor just beats me up every time I walk his What do you think Malik?
01:28:50
Speaker
I don't know. I'm excited to see what happens. like I think there is a world where sinners could take it but I don't i don't want it to. Yeah, i know what you mean. Has the movie grown on me? Yes.
01:29:04
Speaker
Do I watch it and think, yeah, this is the movie that is the most nominated in Oscars history? No. This is the best picture? No.
01:29:16
Speaker
I don't want to be a hater. It's just how I feel. I don't know, man. Is this kind of like how Black Panther went for you? Like, it's a good movie, but too much credit praise? Black Panther...
01:29:28
Speaker
Black Panther felt like, if I could be honest, Black Panther nomination felt like pandering like at the highest degree. like As soon as I saw it was nominated and then it was nominated for Best Picture, I was like, okay. um like It was a good Marvel movie.
01:29:45
Speaker
But let's be real. Let's take a step back and be for real. Yeah. like It's not even the best Marvel movie. Yeah.
01:29:56
Speaker
And it, it, is that was something for sure. Okay. And then of, yeah, that's it. Parts of this feel very similar to that, to me.
01:30:10
Speaker
Parts of it centers over black Panther for sure. Yeah. And I think for sure way more deserving of the nominations they got. But to me, there is a a hint, a hint of that.
01:30:24
Speaker

We do live in a society. uh all in all um maybe we'll do better next year in our predictions maybe we should do the predictions a little later in the year so we don't we're not just like throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks i don't know it's kind of fun to jump in early but i know what you mean it is yeah we'll do we can do two i like that i do i did have fun doing the the jump in early it's funny to look back on it yeah
01:30:55
Speaker

01:31:13
Speaker

01:32:19
Speaker
