1990s Movie Draft Announcement
00:00:36
Speaker
And like I said in the intro today, we're going to be doing a draft of the 1990s.
00:00:42
Speaker
But first, how are you guys doing today? Future me, I'm going to predict thriving more than ever. Good. Famous or dead?
00:00:54
Speaker
In two and a half weeks? A lot can happen. lot can happen in two a By this time, past me, future me, I'm in Los Angeles.
00:01:05
Speaker
Boo! sad that That's the reason I'm famous or dead or both. Because i spiraled after you left. Or I was holding you back the entire time and that's what launched you guys into fame.
00:01:23
Speaker
Welcome back the real guys. The realer guys. The realist
Housekeeping and Movie News
00:01:28
Speaker
guys. It goes hard. but um Before we get into our 90s draft, we've got some housekeeping items and movie news. um I think the first bullet for the housekeeping is me.
00:01:39
Speaker
It just says my loss in translation rating on our last episode episode episode. You did change it the day after we recorded. I did. and So this is, I did change the rating.
00:01:50
Speaker
i initially put it as a four and a half. boom And then i think after the recording, we had the conversation of me needing to open my heart more. I was kind of just penalized for my beliefs. No, that's that's not what happened. What happened was the next morning you listened to the soundtrack and you were like, what was I smoking?
00:02:09
Speaker
It's a five. Yeah. i gave I gave that shit a five. My first five star of the year. um I'm still thinking about that movie all these weeks later. um Second one.
Listener Correction on Noah Baumbach
00:02:20
Speaker
Alex. This one comes from an eagle-eyed listener. An eagle-eyed listener listened to our Lost in Translation pod, which I'm realizing this is going to come weeks later, so it's going to be a bit weird.
00:02:37
Speaker
So... Sorry, eagle-eyed listener. You don't get your just desserts in the next episode. You get them like, what, two episodes later? Three episodes later? Like one to two three episodes later, I think. This is the third episode later.
00:02:50
Speaker
ah that's Eagle-eyed listener... said that we made a mistake and we were spreading misinformation and that the misin for misinformation we were spreading was that marriage story was not about Noah Baumbach's marriage to Greta Gerwig. It was about his first marriage to somebody else and that Greta Gerwig is who he left this person for and they are still married.
00:03:17
Speaker
So we made the claim that they are amicable. In fact, they are so amicable, they are still married. Congratulations to the happy couple. I would like to go on record and say that I believed that they were together and was led astray by people on this podcast, that they were separated, but amicable.
00:03:35
Speaker
Now, We do appreciate any and all feedback towards misinformation coming on the podcast. And to our eagle-eyed listener, i will I'll give you a message that only you and your sharp ear can hear.
00:03:51
Speaker
If you ever make me apologize again, I'm going to fight you.
00:03:58
Speaker
And now the movie news. Tachi, kick us off with today's movie news.
Rumored Snoop Dogg Biopic and Fan Casting
00:04:05
Speaker
Yeah, there's ah rumblings of a Snoop Dogg biopic.
00:04:11
Speaker
That's unfortunate. It should be releasing next year. Snoop Dogg quotes, my daughter or my movie going to be rated R. Believe that.
00:04:24
Speaker
All right, let's fan cast Snoop Dogg for his biopic. um Jeremy Allen White is my pick. Steven Seagal. Dwayne Johnson.
00:04:35
Speaker
Okay. Or Jack Black. All right. All great choices. Snoop Dogg hit us up.
Industry News: Marvel and Disney Layoffs
00:04:42
Speaker
um Marvel layoffs. Huh? And Disney, like as a whole.
00:04:48
Speaker
Right. i I saw that it was the Disney home and the entire Disney home entertainment group. Yep. So buy physical people. Get those people employed. It's your fault that they didn't, that they got laid off because you weren't buying physical media.
00:05:03
Speaker
Tachi, it's time.
00:05:06
Speaker
I've been preaching that from the mountaintops for at least at least months. You hear that? At least months.
00:05:17
Speaker
You hear that, listeners? It's time to get back to physical media days. That's right. We'll get them the jobs back. So the Marvel people that got laid off, that was the was the effects department?
00:05:28
Speaker
I think so. Dude, what's going on over there? How bad is Doomsday going to be? Do you think that has any like reason to this?
00:05:41
Speaker
I don't think they'd be laying off literally the backbone of those entire movies at this point. so like Months before the release of this. Months before this thing comes out, if they think it's going to be good.
00:05:53
Speaker
Yeah, there's still got to be effects work being done now, so... Ooh, what happened? didn't even think about that. Is this thing going to kill the franchise?
00:06:09
Speaker
I hope not. Right? I don't think it'll kill it, but there's no it gets better. never for movie to be bad. No.
1990s Movie Draft Categories
00:06:18
Speaker
There's no way it gets better, though.
00:06:21
Speaker
Thunderbolts made me hope. Fantastic Four made me cope. I like that. ah Speaking of superheroes, Adria Ar... How do you say her name?
00:06:34
Speaker
I don't know. Arjona. not that hard. Alex, you take this Adria Arjona, cast in Superman's sequel. It was rumored she was going to play Maxima, but she's not.
00:06:46
Speaker
We think she's going to play Wonder Woman. And you would know that if you listen to the podcast because we called this. We called it. We don't know where.
00:06:58
Speaker
and we did. We did call it. i We are trying to find the clip so we can put it right here. yeah
00:07:08
Speaker
And when we do, you'll have just heard it. Us calling it So you know that we knew. i really hope I find that clip. I need to find that clip now.
00:07:20
Speaker
We... The other thing... so I thought this may have been in the Oscars episode that we made like to predict the Oscars. And there were three things in it that like we predicted. just like Or two or three things right off the bat that we predicted. We predicted that Conan O'Brien was going to be the host.
00:07:42
Speaker
Mm-hmm. ah We predicted that Mr. Beast was going to be a host for when YouTube did it. And there was that Mr. Beast joke. um The very last shot of the of the night.
00:07:56
Speaker
Yeah, it was it was Mr. Beast hosting for YouTube. And I'm going to stand by that one. I'm going to stand by that one. All right. Yeah. I need to do a better job of keeping track of our predictions and throwing them on the Internet for all to see.
00:08:11
Speaker
Whether that affect us in a positive or negative way, who knows? But so far, it seems like... We have a good track record. We have a good track record. I think we're batting probably above 500, maybe like 600, which is way in the Hall of Fame in baseball. Unsustainable.
00:08:28
Speaker
Yeah. But we will sustain it. We're about to crash. but so um Long Legs Universe sequel. I'm in.
00:08:40
Speaker
I know that goes against everything I've ever said on this podcast. But for some reason, I'm putting stock in early. And I'm in. Look, if we get more Nick Cage, then yeah, I'm in. I'm in.
00:08:51
Speaker
saying I did see a tweet earlier saying how like the ending of Longlegs demystified this figure of Longlegs. That he was just this like pathetic, whiny loser.
00:09:03
Speaker
And so any attempt at like building on that lore just kind of falls because he's already been demystified. Yeah. and that made me kind of I guess we'll see. Yeah, that gave me pause, but I'm like, I'm going to be an early believer, an early adopter.
00:09:18
Speaker
It could be horrible. Probably. But I'm starting this thing up. Speaking of it could be horrible. New look at Beyond the Spider-Verse.
00:09:30
Speaker
do you mean it could be horrible? ah It's just fishing for engagement. i was I'm really excited. Those four stills looked great. yeah I taught you how'd you feel seeing seeing that for the first time?
00:09:42
Speaker
It felt relieving. i needed Everybody needs something from this movie. It's been so long. yeah Three years. Remember when they said they were releasing it in like March of 2024?
00:09:57
Speaker
Like a year after the last one. Crazy. What were they on? i don't know. Did they even have anything ready? Probably not. Like what was the point of that? Be like, we're coming next year. And like two weeks later they were just fuck, why did we say that? Oh no, we have to make the movie.
00:10:18
Speaker
Like, how hard could it be? i I loved that it featured Spider-Punk. That that was one of the shots. Because he was my favorite. Spider-Punk's so sick.
00:10:29
Speaker
I'm a little punk, so, you know. I'll rook out with that. that.
00:10:39
Speaker
Sure thing, buddy. Sure thing. Okay, L.A., Speaking of ATLA leaked.
00:10:50
Speaker
And that's Avatar The Last Airbender for all you uncultured swine. The Legend of Aang. Because Avatar The Last Airbender has been out for like decades. Okay, we all know what we're talking about. The Legend of Aang where they're all a little bit older. The entire movie leaked?
00:11:10
Speaker
No watermarks, just straight leak. How do these happen? like so From what I understand, this is what happened. You had Paramount.
00:11:20
Speaker
you know They own Nickelodeon. They were going to give this a theatrical release, and then they moved it to Paramount Plus only. And that really made some hacking group mad. And so they went full digital Mangione and leaked the movie.
00:11:38
Speaker
Nuts. And you know what?
00:11:45
Speaker
I don't particularly blame them for doing it. I still don't think it's right because of the people who made it were really upset and I saw that on Twitter, but I understand it, right? Especially Paramount's been in the news recently for some not so great things.
00:12:00
Speaker
Yep. You know, and I guess this thing has, but like, pet think tens of millions of views, people have watched it. Wow. It was all over Twitter for, like, the day it released. Like, you couldn't ignore it. And admittedly, I clicked around it. Like, I didn't really watch anything more than a second, but I clicked around to see what it looked like.
00:12:18
Speaker
Same. My thoughts were this. Yeah.
00:12:24
Speaker
It looks, like with my eyes, it looks really well animated. The voice acting?
00:12:38
Speaker
but also wasn't a fan. Tachi, you didn't hear any see any clips? Nothing? Nothing. Oh, man. and Are there were clips still around? Because I think the entire movie got is is is down now.
00:12:50
Speaker
Like, they took it off. But I'm sure there's still clips circulating. I'm sure it's somewhere. It's got to be somewhere. Yeah. like someone was like they Someone saved it. Yeah. I'm sure you can find it on the website.
00:13:01
Speaker
um I saw 10-second clip as well of of our gang just all kind of talking and interacting with each other. So we got to hear Sokka, Korra, Toph, and Aang.
00:13:13
Speaker
All four. What did I say? Korra. Oh, oops. Katara. Katara, Toph. so I already said them and I forgot. um Yes, I was also was not a fan of the voice work that I heard.
00:13:30
Speaker
And I love, like this isn't to like put these people down or anything, but, and I love Steven Yeun, but him as Zuko, like it, no, no. Oh, he's playing Zuko?
00:13:40
Speaker
Yeah, no. I didn't know that. I also didn't know that. I love his work in Invincible and as Zuko, it's like, that's not Zuko. It's not Zuko.
00:13:52
Speaker
What was wrong with the original voice cast? I feel like the OG voice for Zuko just has such a distinct voice for Zuko that I hear him talk. what is his arm I'm drawing a blank on on his name.
00:14:07
Speaker
Danny Bosco or something? Yes. Dante? Dante Bosco. That's Zuko. Really cool name. So I did not hear Steven Yeun's Zuko, but I take your word for it.
00:14:22
Speaker
I'll watch the movie, though. Like, I'm going to watch it. Oh, absolutely. Is there anything that we need to watch, like, before? Avatar. Yeah, the show.
00:14:33
Speaker
I did an Avatar rewatch recently, and it just, oh, God, I can't get enough of it. Have you guys seen Korra? I wasn't a big fan. yeah watch the I think I watched it. i think I finished it.
00:14:45
Speaker
It was a long, long time ago. Yeah, I think I only watched the first season. I heard that it gets better. each season, but I never went back to finish it. You weren't a fan though, Alex?
00:14:56
Speaker
I wasn't a fan, and here's why. It was woke. No, i'm kidding. I wasn't a fan because, especially the second season, which people are all like, oh, but that season was the worst season.
00:15:09
Speaker
It does the thing where it explains so much of like the magic of the world, right? It's oh, the origin of the Avatar, the origin of bending, and then it's like,
00:15:22
Speaker
No, i didn't I didn't need that. like In this world, people can bend elements. There's an avatar. like That was good enough. And then it just... I never really like got into Korra as like a character. I never really liked her.
00:15:37
Speaker
And to to the credit of the writers, that show, after every season, it was in development hell. Every single season.
00:15:49
Speaker
And so they couldn't ever, like, we have the guarantee we're going to get X amount of seasons, so we're going to write, like, an overarching story. They could never do that. There are some great moments, especially the third season. Especially in the third season.
00:16:03
Speaker
Like, overall, I just i couldn't get into it it. It didn't... It felt like like a cheap copy of the Last Airbender.
00:16:15
Speaker
I never could get behind Korra. I could get behind Aang and Katara and all them. like that that the The gang, the Avatar group, yeah just it was like, these were just people.
00:16:26
Speaker
That seems like the general consensus, but I also know that Korra's got its shooters. It does have its shooters. As yours went on, like I think more people turned on to it, but ah still with its ah ah feedback, like you said. and And those people, I appreciate them, and I can see why you really enjoy the show, and I just i wasn't a fan.
00:16:49
Speaker
I gotta like the people if I'm watching four seasons of it, right? True. Fair enough. Last bit. This is huge for the Lizard Boys out there.
00:17:04
Speaker
that sound like a zwa yeah that was really good thank you the godzilla minus zero trailer it rips it's like 20 seconds and yeah i just want more immediately i'd call it a teaser not a trailer the first japanese movie filmed for imax
Rapid Movie Reviews
00:17:24
Speaker
that's huge is there a projected release date November, I think. Yeah, it's all like... Please? Okay, thank God. It's coming out this year for sure. Nice.
00:17:36
Speaker
Happy Thanksgiving, family. I'm watching Godzilla. That's the way to spend the holiday. All right, let's do a rapid review before we get into our draft today.
00:17:47
Speaker
Cool? Sure. All right, wants to go first? What have you guys been watching this week? I'll go. Michael Clayton, 2007, directed by Tony Gilroy of Rogue One and Andor fame.
00:18:05
Speaker
ah My review is ah Billable Hours stays undefeated. 7 out of 10.
00:18:13
Speaker
All right. Billable Hours, is that another movie? No, it's you know Lawyers, Billable Hours. Oh, okay. Okay. Okay. Michael Clayton.
00:18:25
Speaker
I decided it's my watch list. This one. I don't think you'll need to add to your watch list. oh This is Hercules 1997 directed by Ron Clements and John Musker.
00:18:39
Speaker
Um, great soundtrack, pretty good voice acting. um fun fights and I love Danny DeVito.
00:18:54
Speaker
Danny DeVito is one of the best parts of the movie. 3.5 out of 5, not 10. I was like, that's real low. Danny DeVito is really good in that movie. um For mine, I'm going to do the recently released Faces of Death.
00:19:10
Speaker
um I saw this at Alamo yesterday, and it stars Barbie Ferreira and Dacker Montgomery, directed by Daniel Goldhaber. This is actually a remake of the Faces of Death from 1978, which was a home video recording of what looked to be like real people dying but it was later proven that it was fake but it caused a lot of controversy and this is kind of a reimagining remake of that um i had a fun time with it not the greatest thing in the world but i think this could have been really bad but surprisingly did a lot of things that i thought were really interesting uh real people dying yes causing controversy
00:19:52
Speaker
Methinks we pair this with Cannibal Holocaust. Ooh, a rated X episode? It looked pretty brutal. um So the Faces of Death from 2026 was playing clips of the 1978 quote-unquote documentary.
00:20:10
Speaker
And I was like, Jesus Christ, this is kind of crazy. I could only imagine actually watching it in the 70s and fully thinking it was real. Like, it's like... Like X-rated scar you for life type of images.
00:20:25
Speaker
Yeah. um So check it out. It's real footage. It's real footage? It was believed to be real footage, but it was later proven that it was fake from the 1978 version. Developed in the 70s.
00:20:39
Speaker
Yes. Gotcha. Okay. But the clips that I saw, i I'm going to watch the 1978 documentary because it looked actually crazy.
00:20:50
Speaker
Okay. Cool. All right.
Draft Order and Initial Picks
00:20:52
Speaker
You guys ready to draft?
00:20:55
Speaker
Yup. All right. Here's our categories for today. Action, horror slash thriller, drama, comedy, Oscar nominee, blockbuster, and wildcard.
00:21:06
Speaker
For the blockbuster category, the qualification was that the movie needed to make over 300 million in the worldwide box office. And guys, you know what? I realized that was actually not achieved that many times in the 90s.
00:21:22
Speaker
Oh, God. That means you guys, I might have to get a backup. There's it. So from like 1990 to 1994, I think there's one or two.
00:21:34
Speaker
And then you start getting a few more as we get to like 95 to 99. But maybe at the box office. eighteen movies total that did over three hundred mill at the box office um a couple of them blowing them completely out of the water but we'll save that for after we do our picks let's spin the wheel to find out the order in which we will be drafting cool sure all right I just want to say I've still never won one of these so didn't even win our Oscars night
00:22:12
Speaker
we need to play a game that you can win
00:22:17
Speaker
The game is called Name Five Westerns. Oh, let's go. i I immediately lost. Good, the bad, and the ugly. Fistful of dollars, few dollars more.
00:22:29
Speaker
Outlaw Josie Wales and the Searchers. There you have it. um Wild Wild West.
00:22:40
Speaker
Alex, you're going first. I am? You are.
00:22:45
Speaker
Alright. Wait, who's second? Let's see. Second is me. Okay. I'm on the turn. Let's go. And then you are on the turn. Alright. Okay.
Blockbuster Category Picks
00:22:58
Speaker
We begin. Alex, pick your first category. Because I'm scared of this getting poached, and it's a little appropriate since you guys brought up westerns, I'm going to go with Blockbuster as my first category.
00:23:17
Speaker
With that pick, I am going to go with Kevin Costner's Dances with Wolves. Oh, okay. Good pick. Grossed $424 million dollars worldwide.
00:23:32
Speaker
It was really long. It was like a three-hour-and-change movie. Yeah. And I watched it in college once because I was like, oh was one of those movies. and think everyone, everyone references it, right?
00:23:45
Speaker
Like everyone always says Avatar is dancing with wolves in space. So I'm like, all right, let me watch dances with wolves. And I watched dances with wolves. and I'm like, this is actually fantastic. It's a really good movie.
00:23:57
Speaker
Took home a lot of Oscars that year. It took home a ton. I think it took home best picture as well. It did. I really like it. It's a little, probably a little white savory, but a movie still rips. I'm sorry. It's, it's, it's really good.
00:24:13
Speaker
ah um Kevin Costner is Kevin Costner in it, but it's, it's like a movie where a Kevin Costner performance really, really hits home.
00:24:25
Speaker
And I really appreciate it. I saw it years ago and going through this list and then seeing like the amount of Oscars that took him. all was like, this is a movie that I should probably revisit sometime soon.
00:24:37
Speaker
Yeah. It's also got my man in it. i think. Who's your man? Yeah. Graham green. I love cram green. Who's that? He passed away. He was, uh, no, he was an actor.
00:24:51
Speaker
He did movies. Graham green. Oh, yes, yes, yes. He passed away last year, right? Yep. Yeah, I did. I remember seeing him in the in memoriam. Yeah, rest in peace.
00:25:03
Speaker
All right. agree For my first category, I'm going for drama just because this is the category where I feel like I had the least amount of flexibility and could easily any of my picks could have easily
Drama and Horror/Thriller Picks
00:25:17
Speaker
been taken. um So for the drama, I'm going the Prince of Egypt.
00:25:24
Speaker
i Bitch. Did you have that in any of your... Yeah, I did. I'm so sorry. Not this category, though. Different one. Wow. It was available for a number of categories, but I recently watched this movie and...
00:25:41
Speaker
Animation's beautiful. It's got an amazing soundtrack. um The cast is crazy to look at because it is just a bunch of white people. But it's got to <unk> got a great cast. So I'm going Prince of Egypt for drama.
00:25:57
Speaker
Sorry, Timoney. You will be. I'm interested to see what you had what category you had it in You will learn. um Okay, first category then.
00:26:08
Speaker
I'll pivot. See, I'll do... got two. Okay. okay First one will be Horror Slash Thrower. Uh-oh.
00:26:22
Speaker
I'm going with Seven. Yeah. Directed in 1995. Directed by David Fincher. Starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman.
00:26:33
Speaker
It's... It's a banger. It is a dark, grim... grim horrible, but amazing thriller.
00:26:44
Speaker
I think I've picked this one before for a different draft. Yeah. Sounds familiar. we all talked about it. This one, yeah, this one could have been picked in a number of categories. That was... you just going to say about everything?
00:26:56
Speaker
It could have. like And maybe I will. Who cares? I say what I want. here I'm a big boy. All right.
00:27:07
Speaker
Next one is going to be my blockbuster pick.
Blockbuster and Action Picks
00:27:11
Speaker
I'm going to go with Jurassic Park.
00:27:15
Speaker
Am I getting shot? you guys are getting shot. That one could have been picked for a number of categories. It could have. Yeah. It sure could have. Maybe just two, three. It grossed, what I saw was 914 million worldwide, which is nuts for 1994. I saw 1.1 billion.
00:27:33
Speaker
i saw one point one billion That could be right. So between that, yeah, between those two, still an insane amount of money. Around a billion. Yeah. Yeah. You know what? I wish they would just give me the difference.
00:27:45
Speaker
Between the 914 and 1.1? Yeah. it it Just give me that. It's it's just a number, right? It's just a number. Just give it to me. Yeah. yeah There's a lot of numbers. I like dinosaurs. i like dinosaurs lot of numbers on this Google Doc. I just want a small percentage of one of them.
00:28:01
Speaker
And I think that'll be fine. All right. Good pick. Back to me. Yep. Okay. I'm going to go action. Am I going to go action?
00:28:12
Speaker
I think I'm going to go action. um This pick there, there's, there's, Some amazing action movies in the 90s that you can't really go wrong with any of them, but I wanted to pick something that was a little outside of the box. It is a movie that I watched recently in the last couple years that I really enjoyed. It had a remake with Glenn Powell, so I watched this one leading up to it, but my pick is Twister. This movie's insane.
00:28:46
Speaker
Goes hard. I thought you were about to Top Gun. It's got my favorite ah partial owner of the Atlanta Hawks in that movie.
00:28:56
Speaker
That's why I picked it. For you. Jamie Gertz. if you Okay. enough no She married the guy who owns the Atlanta Hawks and she's a partial owner. I think she did their draft pick a couple years ago or something.
00:29:12
Speaker
Well, I'm drafting her in her movie today. So full circle moment for her. I'm going to with horror.
Unexpected Blockbuster and Drama Choices
00:29:22
Speaker
Horror slash thriller.
00:29:24
Speaker
This is one that I think that could be picked for a lot of categories. Do you mean that or are you just making fun of me now? and I'm going to go with nineteen ninety six s Scream.
00:29:39
Speaker
I love Scream. i do too. I think I've told the Drew Barrymore story on the pod, so I won't again, but I have so many memories of this movie.
00:29:50
Speaker
The first one, if you get into the sequels, it just turns into horrid slop. But the first one will always be peak. How many Scream movies are there?
00:30:02
Speaker
Seven. Seven? The seventh came out this year. Yeah, I think I've only seen one through three, and I don't plan on watching the rest.
00:30:13
Speaker
I saw five for Mikey Madison, and it was really bad. Oh, I did see that one because I have that letterbox list. Yeah. Still only seen the first one, and I might keep it that way for a while.
00:30:27
Speaker
yeah I think that's okay. Yeah, yeah you'll you'll be all right. Okay. um I did have a good backup for this one though so I'm interested interested to talk about the honorable mentions yeah yeah we'll talk about them ah for don't know okay I'll go comedy um I'm gonna go a classic that I loved when I was a kid and only got better as I grew up going Austin Powers the spy who shagged me no way way
00:30:58
Speaker
I love the Austin Powers movies. They're great. um i feel like Cam have been talking about them recently and we want to watch them again, but they're not dated. The comedy is still good. Mike Myers is insane as every character.
00:31:14
Speaker
i love Austin Powers and I feel like I had no idea you'd even seen them. Really? I'm like, did you think that was a shoot? Like a, like a, yes. I thought you hadn't even seen it.
00:31:27
Speaker
Was that your wild card? No, let's for recall. Okay. But I felt so good about that. I've seen all the Austin Powers movies. Oh, okay.
00:31:37
Speaker
Good to know. We'll do an Austin Powers episode. Okay.
00:31:43
Speaker
Okay. Back to me. Mm-hmm. All right. Groovy, baby. All right, two categories I need to pivot on, so I'm going to just do what I have. I'm going to go with
00:31:56
Speaker
my action pick, The Matrix. Yeah. 1999. So good. Everybody needs to see it.
00:32:08
Speaker
Agree. All-time classic. It is. Show is. See, my next pick is going to e
00:32:18
Speaker
drama and I'm gonna go with Goodwill Hunting haven't seen it in a while but I remember it being blown away it's awesome Tati's drafting his guys he's getting his guys yeah I'm assembling a team solid role players
00:32:41
Speaker
Okay, back to Malik. Tachi's going to win. He just, this is a team that's going to win. You think so? hope so. Yeah. What do you have? what do you have so He's got, he just got the Matrix and Goodwill Hunting. And then seven in Jurassic Park.
00:32:54
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, it's stacked. Bro's going to blow us out of the water. You don't know. You took awesome powers away from me. And the Prince of Egypt.
00:33:05
Speaker
Do people like awesome powers like that though? Yeah, for sure. 100%. Where do I want to go? Okay.
00:33:15
Speaker
I honestly feel... Okay. I'm just going to go for Blockbuster. um I have a few here. Like we talked about Jurassic Park. That made a lot of money. There's another big movie in here that made a lot of money that I think would be good for the charts, but maybe not for the arts.
00:33:35
Speaker
So I'm going to go with my heart. There are two heart picks that I have here.
00:33:40
Speaker
And I'm going to go Stuart Little.
00:33:51
Speaker
This movie made just a little over 300 million. And I'm picking this because it's. It's not the one that you would think, right?
00:34:04
Speaker
You look at this list of movies that made over $300 million, and I'm like, Stuart Little made that much money? little mouse with a red car?
00:34:14
Speaker
that's where I'm going. Big dreams. Big dreams. I loved the movie when I was a kid. Does it hold up now? I don't know. It's like me with Alvin and the Chipmunks.
00:34:25
Speaker
Exactly. Although I know Alvin and the Shipmunks is not all done. I know that movie's annoying as hell. It's just probably just nightmarish. Alright, that's my blockbuster pick. Shout out the rat with the car.
00:34:42
Speaker
Shout out the orphans who got abandoned so someone could adopt a rat. Imagine being in that orphanage for years and thinking today's the day and then they take a rat I'm like, we'll we'll take this one.
00:34:57
Speaker
and i don't know about you guys, but me and my friends would have killed Stuart Little with hammers. yeah Would have consumed him. Like that painting of Kronos by,
00:35:16
Speaker
I think we skipped one of my picks on my turn because I only did a horror pick. Oh my God. So how do we fix this? Do you get three picks? I guess I do three picks. Actually, I don't care. We'll just tag it on the end. You guys aren't picking what I'm doing anyway. All right. Do two picks. Do two picks then.
00:35:40
Speaker
I'm going to do my trauma first and I'm going to my comedy first. So for drama from 1999, directed by Danny Boyle, I'm going go with Trainspotting.
00:35:53
Speaker
Good pick. I love Trainspotting. I have a shirt that's about Trainspotting. I own the book. The book is illegible because it's written in a Scottish accent.
00:36:06
Speaker
It's like a photonic Scottish accent, and that's going to be a slog to get through. But one day i will do it. One day I will do it. I believe Ewan McGregor is great in it.
00:36:16
Speaker
um Definitely not like Obi Wan. He's the anti one yeah in that one, but everyone should watch it. It's great.
00:36:27
Speaker
I watched it. I watched it. as I've seen it twice and I watched it after getting my wisdom teeth taken out and I watched it during dinner as a whole family.
00:36:38
Speaker
Don't do that. yeah Don't do that. Man, the pics that you like watch with your family are crazy. ah We, as a family, we do participate in ball knowledge.
00:36:52
Speaker
that Our ball IQ is high. So. But I also had my wisdom teeth out so I could do whatever I wanted. And you know what? When you're on that extra strength ibuprofen, a movie about heroin addiction goes crazy.
00:37:08
Speaker
I tried to show a movie like that to my family once and I got banned from picking movies for a while. Wait, remind me. I don't remember it was. Mother. Yeah. Understandable. That's on me.
00:37:20
Speaker
That's on me. Yeah. J-Law.
00:37:25
Speaker
My bad. My bad, y'all. Alright, who's worse? Malik picking movies for his family or Alex picking movies for his first dates? Oh, man. Hydrogen bomb versus hydrogen bomb.
00:37:43
Speaker
I'm to go you because it's Skinnamarink with ads. okay Which is just insane. And your family is a little more likely to forgive you.
00:37:53
Speaker
One day. You're going to watch Skinnamarink with ads and then you can leave. What's your comedy pick? 1990. We're doing house party. ah we're doing nineteen ninety s house party Haven't you picked House Party before?
00:38:10
Speaker
i have not. I have not. I've talked about House Party before. Because every time we do this, you guys go, oh, House Party?
00:38:21
Speaker
Isn't that the one from 2023? And I say, no, it's the one from 1990.
00:38:27
Speaker
yeah Starring Christopher Reed, Christopher Martin, Martin Lawrence. I have not picked this before. Oh. We've talked about it a lot, though. We have talked about it. Sounds like a good 90s cast. It's a classic.
00:38:40
Speaker
It's got some great one-liners in it. Some great one-liners. And it also recently got added to the Criterion Collection. so Oh, no might have pick it up. Yeah. Yeah. There's also... yeah it's it's just... It's a very endearing movie.
00:38:57
Speaker
You watch it and it's like so inoffensive. You know, like you're watching it. It's like this is so this is fun. This is solid. And i I just really like it. it's It's just a pleasant movie to watch.
00:39:13
Speaker
It's just guys being dudes. You love a movie of guys being dudes. I love a movie about guys being dudes. You got to.
00:39:23
Speaker
All right, I'm going for my horror slash thriller pick. um This pick is a movie I recently watched.
Horror and Anti-Western Picks
00:39:33
Speaker
I picked it up on 4K, and thankfully I liked it.
00:39:38
Speaker
But I'm going with Kurosawa's Cure for the horror pick. um If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. just It's just a great movie. I won't say much about Kiyoshi Kurosawa, not Akira Kurosawa. Yes. Just for our confused listeners out there.
00:39:55
Speaker
Kiyoshi, everybody. um If you haven't seen it, add it to your watch list. Watch it tonight when you when you listen to this episode. That's what I'm going for. Cool.
00:40:08
Speaker
My next two picks... I'm going to go with comedy for this one. This one is Fargo. It's kind of a dark comedy, but that was on my list too.
00:40:19
Speaker
Comedy nonetheless. And I wanted to shout out Francis McDormand as Marge. She's awesome. So, so good in this movie. Oh, golly.
00:40:33
Speaker
What kind of accent is that? Like, I think Minnesota is what I think of. Minnesota. Minnesota. i can't i can't do that northern midwest yeah well you catch the packers game on oh hi oh hi oh dear it's like what's her face from uh kate hudson from song sung blue yeah literally yeah oh i got hit by a car oh it's no big deal don't you guys worry about it i'm okay yeah So you can do it. Why are you saying you can't? That's actually pretty good. That was pretty good. You know what know what? You should move to rural Minnesota instead of LA.
00:41:10
Speaker
That'd be insane. Might well stay in Texas. You guys hear about that cruise ship that changed course from the Caribbean to Canada? Like two days before they depart?
00:41:23
Speaker
No. What happened? Yeah, they sent out like a, just a ah message to all the the passengers that they're changing their destination from some tropical place to Canada.
00:41:36
Speaker
When was this? Pretty recently. Like within the last week? Maybe.
00:41:44
Speaker
I can't do that. actually don't know if this is real. I just saw ah saw it on TikTok.
00:41:51
Speaker
I'm believing everything I see. You do no further digging. You go, damn, that's crazy. Why would I? And he just keeps curling. Why would I verify anything?
00:42:02
Speaker
You guys hear about this? You guys hear about this? read this from a Facebook comment. You hear about the aliens that landed? ah You guys hear that the earth is flat? Y'all heard about the firmament?
00:42:17
Speaker
All right. ah For my next pick. Oh, is it still you? Show is. I'm so sorry. You will be. Again. I will be. I have one more pick this round.
00:42:31
Speaker
It's the Oscar nominee category. I'm going with Braveheart. I used to watch a lot of movies like this when I was little.
00:42:43
Speaker
um I don't know why. i probably shouldn't have. But I remember a lot, I can distinctly remember a lot of key scenes in this movie, and I don't think I've seen it, I'm not exaggerating, in over 20 years.
00:42:59
Speaker
so You just won a free Scotland that bad. It's at least memorable. It won a lot of the Oscars, actually. It swept with five wins in 1995.
00:43:12
Speaker
Did it get Best Picture that year? Yeah. Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Makeup, and Best Sound Effects. Did Mel Gibson direct that, or is he just in it? He is the director.
00:43:24
Speaker
Wow. He cooked. He could cook. He did. was in his bag in the 90s. He's like off his rocker now, right? Yeah. What's the latest with Mel Gibson? I think he's near death.
00:43:36
Speaker
I think he's directing. I'm sorry. I think he's doing The Passion of the Christ 2. Yeah. That's right. Okay. he is He is coming back to direct that. I'm really intrigued. I'm really intrigued.
00:43:48
Speaker
I am too. How does it get a s sequel? There's a whole book. I was going to say, I mean, you have like the resurrection, that whole bit.
00:43:59
Speaker
I guess you could probably throw in him like heard him. Jesus appearing to Paul. Him capital H. is You could also i think actually what I heard it might be about is like Jesus.
00:44:15
Speaker
So like it's in the Nicene Creed, that's ah it's like you know he descended into hell, and on the third day he rose again. and like I think canonically, he goes to hell to free everybody who's down there, all the sinners, because he's now like the new covenant, and they're he died for their sins too.
00:44:35
Speaker
So I think the movie might be about him going to hell and like fighting demons or something. There's no way. i don't know. That would be so sick. how what is the I used to know this, but what is the time period of his resurrection to him being lifted back up into heaven? How long was he on earth? A few days. Oh, just days?
00:44:56
Speaker
Yeah, it's it's like a few days. He makes a couple appearances and then and then ascends. Passion the Christ 2 a la after hours, but the descent into hell.
00:45:08
Speaker
That could be something. Hmm.
00:45:13
Speaker
My turn. Sure. All right. um I'm also going Oscar nominee, and this was nominated at the 2000 Oscars with the movie that came out in 1999.
Oscar Nominee and Wildcard Picks
00:45:27
Speaker
Toy Story 2, and the award this was nominated for was for Best Original Song, When She Loved Me by Randy Newman. When somebody loved me. that song and like jesse's like reminiscing on her time that's a tough great well toughy it is to story 2 is such a great movie one of the greatest sequels out there i would say you ever been so down bad you listened to when she loved me damn if i haven't i definitely haven't
00:46:00
Speaker
i was crying in the shower listening to the Toy Story 2 soundtrack. That would probably heal something in you. Not in you specifically, but like in who... In whoever does that. who Whoever partakes. felt directed at Alex. I'm not going to lie. That would heal something.
00:46:21
Speaker
Wait, hey, you should do that, by the way. Okay, thanks, guys. It wasn't directed to you. That's what... I didn't realize I'm irreparably broken.
00:46:35
Speaker
Yeah, he's one of Sid's toys.
00:46:43
Speaker
Those things went hard back in the day. I wanted them. Especially the spider baby head. I loved the spider baby head. I did. it I was a fan of the swole duck.
00:46:56
Speaker
Oh, the swole duck was great. Yeah. Good one. but Who was a fan of the legs? No one was a fan of the legs. Check their hard drives. Yeah. You know how it's like a fishing rod? It's a fishing rod, right? Legs and a fishing rod?
00:47:12
Speaker
It's a hooker. Oh, that's crazy. and Those Pixar people. Naughty, naughty, naughty. That's so crazy. I never thought about that.
00:47:31
Speaker
My turn again. Just kidding. It's Alex's turn, I think. Is it? Well, yeah, if you win, it's my turn. Yeah, go ahead. who's that Whose turn could it be? I don't know. Tachi's? Oh, I guess it could be. I get one more. The other person.
00:47:46
Speaker
All right. I'm going to do Oscar nominee and then action. For Oscar nominee, this one best picture.
00:47:58
Speaker
Unforgiven. Directed by Clint Eastwood. Starring Clint Eastwood. you know And Morgan Freeman. And Gene Hackman.
00:48:10
Speaker
It is the anti-Western. And the final scene is just incredible. And I can almost recite it word for word. That's how much I love it. I watched it on a plane and I was so mad I watched it on a plane.
00:48:26
Speaker
Like the first time you saw it was on a plane? Yeah. yeah
00:48:31
Speaker
It is so good. love it. just added it to my watch list. Me too. We have to do a Western month. Yes. We do have to do a Western month. You guys got to catch up. It's just, it's such a blind spot in both your filmographies.
00:48:47
Speaker
Completely blind. I mean, it's nuts. Some of the greatest movies of all time are Westerns. The most iconic, influential. mean, good, the bad, and the ugly. Like it's, it's the good, the bad, and the ugly.
00:48:59
Speaker
just Yeah. I get it. John Wayne. I've heard of Clint Eastwood.
00:49:07
Speaker
I know that guy. Well, my action's actually going to be another Western. I'm going 1993's Tombstone, starring Val Kilmer, Kurt Russell. I do know about Tombstone.
00:49:19
Speaker
Have I seen it? No. But I know about it. That's for sure. It's iconic. Oh my God, look at them posted up. it it It is just a movie. It is.
00:49:30
Speaker
How long is the movie? Two hours? it is two hours of one-liners. And they're all great. Val Kilmer is... and Val Kilmer is incredible in this movie. This this might be his best movie.
00:49:46
Speaker
Doc Holliday. I've heard that name a lot. Because he's a real person. This is like a real thing. oh okay. Yeah, like Tombstone's based off like true events. The shootout at the OK Corral in Tombstone, Arizona.
00:49:59
Speaker
Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday. mean, these were all real people. Even Curly Bill? Johnny Ringo, that's not a real person. Nope, Johnny Ringo's real person. There's no way. Yeah, look it up. There's a whole Wikipedia thing about it. Even Ghost Adventures went there.
00:50:13
Speaker
Ghost Adventures did a ghost hunt in Tombstone. Did they find anything?
00:50:20
Speaker
Maybe not. I guess not. a Not a single thing. I don't remember the episode that well. Never being honest.
00:50:31
Speaker
I'm looking at the cast list and it's kind of stacked. Billy Bob Thornton is like way down there. This is a stacked cast. Yeah.
00:50:43
Speaker
built And it guess what? i went to add it to my watch list and it was already on my watch list. Oops. I was going to say this one is is probably there from way back in the day of the place we worked at.
00:50:55
Speaker
I feel like it probably is. Yeah. don't even remember. so i can't I can't even recall seeing it in my watch list. It was probably way down there. Yeah. um Yeah. Tombstone is a great movie.
00:51:09
Speaker
It's got some great one-liners. All right. Malik, it's your turn. All right, i think this is my last category, and it's going Um... um I decided to go ahead and just do one of my honorable mentions just because I thought this would be a fun pick.
00:51:26
Speaker
We have an episode on it. I'm going back to the horror category and throwing that for my wild card. And I'm picking ghost watch directed by Leslie Manning. That was we on my short list as well. Yeah. We did an episode on ghost watch and it was a big surprise for me.
00:51:44
Speaker
A movie that I thoroughly enjoyed that I highly recommend to everybody. um there was a time and place for it to get that real, real true magic. But even still today in 2026, if it's your first time watching, I think you can, I think you can see some, some bits there too.
00:52:03
Speaker
And, and there's stuff for it on a rewatch too, because apparently Mr. Pipes is in that movie like 16 times. I saw him once, twice.
00:52:14
Speaker
I think I can't. Yeah. Like once or twice. And then I went back and watched the YouTube and was like, I gotta go back. Yeah. Because he's in there how many times? That's insane. We need Arrow Video to re-release the edition they had. That is one that I will be on the lookout Until the day it's in my hands.
00:52:32
Speaker
Like I need that re-release. I think I told you guys about like I went on eBay and I was like, does zen is anyone selling this on 4K? And I saw copies for like 150 bucks, 200 bucks. I'm not doing that.
00:52:43
Speaker
Arrow video, give us a re-release, please. I'll buy I'm begging. I'm begging. I'm on my knees. You have at least two buyers. Yeah. you You would have a third buyer if one of our three didn't just detest physical media and supporting the arts and movies in general.
00:53:03
Speaker
i don't know I don't know if he would own a horror movie in his house. Would you touch me? Can't say I would. Not on purpose.
00:53:15
Speaker
Even if it meant someone living, if you don't buy it, somebody dies.
00:53:25
Speaker
have some people on my short list, so... You can't pick, though. Yeah. I'm going to take my chances. yeah could be someone you know. He's like, I'm doing it.
00:53:40
Speaker
hope it is. My last pick is my wild card. And this one is wild indeed for five-year-olds. So I'm going with three ninjas.
00:53:56
Speaker
Came out in 1992, directed by John Turtletaub, who actually kind of has a a pretty iconic filmography. He's done the Meg, National Treasure 1 and 2, Cool Runnings, The Sorcerer's Apprentice.
00:54:17
Speaker
I mean, there's some...
00:54:21
Speaker
uh there those are some movies bro i love the meg yeah he was i think big enough to make fun of in uh bojack horseman there was the turtle tob director oh my god that's him That's hilarious.
00:54:40
Speaker
It's lost on me. I need to watch that show. But yeah, this movie, I have watched it so many times. It's really it's such a great kids movie. It's I'm sure it was part of the bridge that got me into martial arts movies when I was younger. um It's awesome. Super fun. Really silly.
00:54:58
Speaker
Great. Just like. I don't know. Silly night. Silly movie night.
00:55:05
Speaker
How many ninjas were in the movie?
00:55:09
Speaker
like I think hundreds and I'm not even exaggerating. ah think there are hundreds.
00:55:19
Speaker
Yeah. I have never heard of this movie. You are one of three people on my letterbox that have seen it. Wow. That's more than I would have expected. Should I put it on my watch list?
00:55:31
Speaker
I mean, i think so. i think it's super fun. It's not, you know, it's not interstellar, but yeah it's... It's better than interstellar. Exactly. It's ultimate peak. Transcend time and space.
00:55:48
Speaker
You're right. That was safe. And neither of us were picking that. All
00:55:54
Speaker
right. So I believe I have to do my makeup pick. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. um So this is the one that I had a lot of anguish going for, but I think going to go with 1994's Three Ninjas Kick Back.
00:56:15
Speaker
I'm kidding. Could you imagine?
00:56:22
Speaker
um It does exist. It does exist. nakahi does Tachi has not seen it. but I've only seen the original movie. I think there's a trilogy.
00:56:34
Speaker
I think it's four of them. There's a Three Ninjas Knuckle Up and then a Three Ninjas High Noon at Mega Mountain. Okay, that sounds incredible.
00:56:46
Speaker
And they're all ninety These all count as 90s films. Wow. Four movies in one decade. Okay, the the poster of Three Ninjas High Noon at Mega Mountain has me wild. and Oh my god, it's Hulk Hogan.
00:57:01
Speaker
oh Really? There's no way to fight same it's the same series. I'm gonna fight the three ninjas, brother. it is the same.
00:57:11
Speaker
It is the same. Victor Wong is in it. awful I love Victor Wong. This is insane. He's such an icon.
00:57:23
Speaker
Rocky, Colt, and Tum Tum.
00:57:27
Speaker
I think two of the brothers get recast like every movie.
00:57:32
Speaker
Dude, imagine being the one who's like still in them trying to chase all the glory. Okay, we we need to do my wild card. Yeah, yeah, let's yeah. Let's get back. For my wild card, this was a tough one.
00:57:46
Speaker
But I want to talk about this movie for a bit. um So I'm leaving two that I love in the dust. And the movie I'm picking comes from 1997, and it is the reason that Maya Hawke exists today.
00:58:02
Speaker
I'm picking Gattaca, starring Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. Andrew you Law. This is the movie where Ethan Hawke met Uma Thurman and they fell in love.
00:58:16
Speaker
Oh, is a heard of this. It's a sci fi movie. It's really weird. Ethan Ethan Hawk makes some crazy faces in it, but it's the soundtrack is incredible and the cinematography in it.
00:58:34
Speaker
There's one scene that's just like jaw droppingly good.
00:58:42
Speaker
And Jude Law is great too. I also added it to my watch list.
00:58:49
Speaker
This guy, Andrew Nichol, who directed it, also did In Time, starring Amanda Seyfried and Justin Timberlake. I have seen that one. um And he did Lord of War. start with Yeah, Lord of War.
00:59:01
Speaker
That's getting a sequel. Let's go. is it about how he got true the Lord of War got traded for Brittany Griner? ah I don't know, but it has Nicolas Cage and Bill Skarsgรฅrd.
00:59:17
Speaker
Gattaca. Interesting. Okay. I added it to my watch list. Okay. The cinematographer for Gattaca also was a cinematographer for Black Hawk Down. So that's a neat little pivot.
00:59:30
Speaker
Also did Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. No way. No way. Danny DeVito is a producer on Gattaca as well. And Order of the Phoenix had some pretty sick scenes, actually.
00:59:41
Speaker
Yeah, this this movie is shot phenomenally well. Like, the vibes in it are immaculate. It's so 90s, but it's really good.
00:59:53
Speaker
Yeah, this poster is crazy. They're really giving, like, 90s twilight on here. You've piqued my interest and I've added it to my watch list. we have I added four movies tonight to my watch list. I love that. That's what these drafts are all about. Getting to discover something maybe we're unfamiliar with.

01:02:27
Speaker
I had a bunch, actually. What did got? you not going to tell you. What? That's what this whole section is for. That's not how podcasting works. What?
01:02:38
Speaker
What? What? ah So for action, my alternate pick was King of New York 1990 starring Christopher Walken. For horror slash thriller, it was Event Horizon 1997 starring Lawrence Fishburne. That movie's got a lot of sauce. Yeah.
01:02:56
Speaker
Oscar nominee, it was The Usual Suspects. Okay. One of the best twists in movie history. And then for my wild card, there were two of them. There was 1991's Mississippi Masala and 1992's Belle Epoque.
01:03:16
Speaker
Don't know either of those. Same. Mississippi Masala was directed by Zoran Mamdami's mom. doy's mom That's why the name sounds familiar. Got it. Okay. um Really, really good. It stars a really young Denzel Washington. Okay.
01:03:32
Speaker
um And then Belle Epoque stars a really young Penelope Cruz. And it won Best Foreign Language Film for 1992. Spanish. Spanish movie.
01:03:44
Speaker
Really good. I really liked it.
01:03:49
Speaker
Nice. It's like a warm weather kind of movie. So now the weather's heating up here in Texas. I'm thinking about Belle Epoque again. Time to throw it on.
01:04:00
Speaker
Not sure what you got. only had a few ah for action. i had two alternates Mission Impossible, but we talked about that one a lot. Yeah. um And then Mortal Kombat, which is one of my all time favorite movies, actually.
01:04:15
Speaker
Are you excited for the new Mortal Kombat movie? Yes, actually. Did you see them? I wasn't for the last couple. OK, I didn't see them either. OK, yeah. The last one was bad.
01:04:26
Speaker
Yeah. But I think this one might actually be kind of good. why i don't know but i think i think it will at least be o k i hope it's fun like at the end of the day that's what i think those movies should be right the most recent one just was not even fun i think the original just perfectly mixes and mashes the i guess cartoonishness of the game um but the fight choreography is also just really cool yeah and fun it seems like they're leaning more into like that cartoon style with this new one like especially seeing like the all the character posters that we're getting we're getting a lot of a lot of the mortal kombat characters in this so kind of seems like it could go that direction but
01:05:22
Speaker
Who knows? finger calm For action, i also had Mission Impossible, but wasn't going pick it just because, yeah, we've we've talked about it so much. I had The Matrix, which you took.
01:05:32
Speaker
Terminator 2, Judgment Day. And then Blade. hey Love Blade. Will always love those movies. um I'm kind of happy that a Marvel's probably not going remake them.
01:05:44
Speaker
kind of happy that those dumb dumbs can't figure out how to make a cool movie about a guy who kills vampires. Yeah. You can't do that. You don't deserve to do anything. At this point, I don't want it.
01:05:55
Speaker
Yeah. Keep it. Don't give it to me. Not interested. For horror, I had The Sixth Sense. Me too. Drama, I had Reservoir Dogs.
01:06:07

01:07:03
Speaker
Yep. Surprise. No one picked it. $2.2 billion in 1994. It doesn't make any sense. What are we talking about? That can't be possible.
01:07:14
Speaker
That's insane. That's the other country's GDP. Not our country, a country. I know Nauru isn't pulling in $2.2 billion. dollars No. And Big Jim just did it over Leo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
01:07:30
Speaker
That's insane. i bet I could do it. um I also have the Godzilla from 1999.
01:07:37
