00:00:05
Speaker
Hello everybody and welcome to another Enough of the Falafel podcast. We're delighted to have you here with us for this one as we always are. It's absolutely fabulous to think of the lovely community that we've got out there of you who tune in twice a week or maybe just occasionally to listen to our content around vegan and animal

rights. Now this is the start of our holiday special season.
00:00:35
Speaker
Twice a year we will take a little break from recording twice a week but we still want to put two episodes out there a week for you to listen to but we just take a little break from recording at this time of because there's often lots of other things taking up our time. So we have got some special episodes coming up for you. At the turn of the new year, we've got our two-part Vegan News Awards of the Year show 2025, where we look back over the last 12 months of news and have a bit of a tongue-in-cheek award ceremony for the most stupid story, the
00:01:17
Speaker
thing that's made us laugh the most, the vegan superhero of the year, all sorts of silly things like that. And it's a nice opportunity to look back over the last 12 months of vegan and animal rights news.

Christmas Day Plans and Personal Highlights

00:01:30
Speaker
On Christmas day, 25th of December, we will be releasing our third annual quiz of the year. And we've got four folk who are going to be participating in that and you can participate Two as well said that one is always a highlight something for you to look forward to and we have got this special episode We did this for the first time last year and we're repeating it in 2025 We have got some Christmas cards from regular contributors Dominic
00:02:01
Speaker
Julie, Paul, Shane and myself and we are going to be giving you a bit of a holiday greeting, maybe sharing our enough of the falafel highlight from the last 12 months. We might tell you what we're going to be up to over the next two weeks when we're not recording. um We might have a little gift for you and we might falafel on about anything really at all. So we've got six different Christmas cards coming your way.

Dominic's Non-Religious Christmas Story

00:02:30
Speaker
Like I say, we've got Kate, we've got Julie, we've got Paul, we've got myself, we've got Shane, but let's kick the ball off with the ever animated Dominic and hear his Christmas card to you, the Enough of the Falafel listeners, 2025.
00:02:50
Speaker
Oi, oi, oi, it's Dominic from the Enough the Falafel Collective here saying, Happy Christmas. If you're anything like me, then you're not especially religious. Like, I've got friends of all faiths and beliefs. And for me, I was brought up atheist. My mum's changed her mind now. She's a little bit more sort of spiritual. But back when I was a kid, I loved Christmas for the first. food, for the music, for the celebrations, and i think that's a really lovely way to be.
00:03:25
Speaker
um I can remember when ah I live in Manchester in the Manchester rock group Oasis, released their third album and my mum and me cannot stand Oasis but we were both working in a music shop and my mum was like you know what let's celebrate celebration the world is full of challenging things let's celebrate why not why not and we celebrated the release of the album by this ah group Oasis who neither of us could stand but the yeah there was balloons and snacks and nice things there. that's how I feel about Christmas. That's exactly how I feel. So my suggestion for the Enough of the Falafel listeners is that whatever your belief, whatever your religion, whatever company you are, i think do something nice um a couple of christmases ago when we were in the lockdown everyone i knew was sick with coronavirus and i ended up having my first ever christmas day on my own and i wondered how my mental health would stand up to that and you know what i decided make the effort dominic that was my choice for me i was like yeah make some food so i did a great big vegan roast dinner
00:04:40
Speaker
on my own and i had some video calls with some friends you know I played video games I did nice stuff for myself that I liked and I did have a proper celebration and yeah that is my philosophy for life you know we hear on enough of the falafel in our news show that there are challenges around the world there are situations that we wish were different from how they are And I think if you could do something lovely that's not hurting any other life, you're just having a little good vibe, I say go for it. So whatever you're doing, I wish you a really, really happy Christmas from me. And yeah, keep listening to Enough of the Falafel. Good stuff.
00:05:25
Speaker
Ah, lovely stuff. We always love hearing from Dominic and spending time

Gift Recommendations: Poetry Books

00:05:30
Speaker
with him. And in the last 12 months, I've bought several of his different poetry books for myself and also to to give to others as gifts. And yeah, if you're struggling for a gift for anybody, I would wholeheartedly recommend doing so from Flapjack Press. We'll put a link in the show notes. Getting some of Dominic's work to share the joy with other people. Now, you listeners won't know this, but whenever Dominic and Julie are on the show together, whenever Dominic comes onto the screen at the start of the recording, Julie will reach out towards her camera and go to tickle him under the chin such as his cute and adorable charm. um So we mentioned Julie, let's hear her Christmas card. I can hear it coming now so let's hear from Julie.

Julie's Holiday Plans and Advocacy

00:06:20
Speaker
Hello all you lovely Enough of the Falafel listeners and the rest of the Enough of the Falafel team as well. This is Julie here just popping on to give you a wee message to say I hope you have a really really good time over the solstice or Christmas or whatever you celebrate at this time of year and also when it comes time to celebrate the coming of 2026, a new year for us and looking into the spring. So yeah, I hope you have a good time.
00:07:03
Speaker
My highlight, enough of the falafel highlight and of the year, sounds a bit predictable probably, but it was episode 205. I know it was one I was in, that sounds awful maybe, but... It's one of the sheep episodes and i always love to speak up on behalf of sheep in general and that was just, yeah, it was just a joy to do that yet again on the show and especially Anthony's last question to me, if you remember that or you want to
00:07:39
Speaker
tune back to that episode. That was really touching and just so important for me to get out there and see to a kind of broader audience than the people I normally speak to on a day-to-day basis. So that was that was my highlight.
00:07:57
Speaker
and In the time between the sort of towards the end of December to the beginning of January, I'm really going to be working a lot of it as usual, and attending to the sheep in my life and hanging out with them whenever I can, doing quite a few races and running events and catching up with my friends and seeing my family. The usual things really. and The gift that I'm offering is a little video on YouTube. I'll send Anthony the link for that.
00:08:34
Speaker
and And that's it really. i just, again, I just hope you all have a great time and I wish you constructive conversations. If you do find yourself sharing table space with people who persist in eating dead animals and milk that they had to be complicit in murder to obtain, just remember You're on the side of peace, justice, planetary health, your own health,
00:09:10
Speaker
all of that. And even if they seem unconvinced at the time, you just never know when the nice, peaceful stance that you're taking might have some kind of influence on them at a later date.
00:09:27
Speaker
So keep on keeping on. And i look forward to making more podcasts and sharing more animal rights, news and views and things with you in 2026.
00:09:44
Speaker
um Thank you, Julie. What a lovely message. And we know that many, many of you listeners love hearing Julie's voice. She has definitely won the ah most popular voice to listen to award on the show in the last 12 months. We've had several unsolicited messages saying how much they enjoy her dulcet tones.
00:10:05
Speaker
Someone whose tones I've been enjoying listening to over the last few months has been Shane. Shane is our first and currently only contributor from North America where we know loads of you tune in from. So it's been an absolute delight to have Shane with us all the way from Houston, Texas over the last couple of months. And she has sent a transatlantic Christmas card to us. So let's hear that one now from Shane.

Shane's Book Recommendation

00:10:37
Speaker
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! This is Shane. I'm one of the newest members of the Enough of the Falafel Collective. I just want to say that joining this wonderful team has been the highlight of my 2025.
00:10:50
Speaker
During this holiday season, i like to relax and enjoy a good book, but since I'm often really busy, I usually choose a shorter book and of course I want something cozy and warm.
00:11:01
Speaker
So if you're looking for a book like that, I recommend Sipsworth by Simon Van Bui. The story takes place over the course of a week where a woman named Helen returns to the English village where she grew up after living in Australia for 60 years.
00:11:19
Speaker
And her family has all passed away and really she just wants to be left alone to die. That is until she rescues a pet mouse and embarks on a journey of friendship and realization.
00:11:33
Speaker
So this book touches lightly on animal rights themes, and it's a lovely story about second chances. It also makes a great gift for vegans and non-vegans. I gifted it to my aunt and my mother last year and both really enjoyed it, and they are not vegan.
00:11:50
Speaker
So again, that's Sips Worth by Simon Van Bui, and his last name is spelled V-A-N-V-E. B-O-O-Y. And it's available at all major book retailers in print, audio, and the e-book. So if you're looking for a book, I hope that you give that one a chance.
00:12:09
Speaker
Again, i hope you have a wonderful holiday season and I'm looking forward to seeing you in 2026.
00:12:15
Speaker
Yes, yes, yes, more Shane in 2026. That is definitely what we want. And I have put a link in the show notes for the ah paper and audio version of Sipsworth. It's so been added to my Audible wishlist once I get some more credits.
00:12:35
Speaker
Now, you can tune in in about a week's time for one of the holiday specials that I've already mentioned at the top of the show, where Shane will be joined by Paul, and they will be talking about the last 12 months of vegan and animal rights news and choosing their winners and losers from the year. So let's hear from Paul, enough of the falafel's very own Father Christmas with his long plush beard. He's been traveling across to Europe in the last week or so, but he has got back just enough time to send us a Christmas message. So let's hear from Paul.

Paul's Christmas Wishes and Challenges

00:13:16
Speaker
Hello everyone, this is Paul wishing you a Merry Christmas for 2025. I'm just back from Paris, had a great time over there. Really good see vegan food over there finally taking off.
00:13:28
Speaker
So hoping you have a great Christmas and hoping that you'll stay with us in the future for news and new topics in 2026. There's a lot planned. Also hoping that you stay sane over Christmas with all the challenges it brings for vegans.
00:13:42
Speaker
I'm sure I said it last year, but, you know, recognise that it can be difficult sometimes to remain joyful at this time a year and challenging when there's a lot of animal abuse on the table. But, say, hope you can ah you can manage to get through that, maybe even help educate people.
00:13:58
Speaker
Stay rested, as I say, stay sane, and hope... Special wishes out also to Hunt s Sabs as well for 2025-26, especially getting out there trying to monitor and stop cruelty.
00:14:11
Speaker
Thanks for everyone that's been listening to date this year. you know We do this out of love, as you probably know. Special shout out to Anthony. um i know he'll say it's team effort, but he really does hold everything together and get us all organised.
00:14:24
Speaker
But yeah, thanks to the other guests as well for always helping us have healthy healthy debate and demonstrating the um importance to have, you know, sometimes to have people challenging your own views on what you think. It's really a skill that's being lost these days, unfortunately. So yeah, I'm always grateful to listen to their views respectfully and likewise. even if you don't agree with them sometimes and likewise i guess the main thing is we know we're all joined together whatever we might think nuances in that that so we want to put the animals first and i've certainly learned loads from them so yeah thanks to them again my highlight from this year as i say i think it is about that that interaction with others on the podcast i think the podcast is really maturing now and some really good healthy debate it's uh It's going to be a quiet one for me in terms of Christmas. I've got an exam to set. So yeah, not going to be too much fun over that over that period. Lots of revision to do.
00:15:18
Speaker
I'm also looking forward to recording a quiz episode, which we'll be doing very soon indeed. ah My Christmas gift, which I think will be posted alongside this message, will be a picture of some vegan cakes from Paris.
00:15:34
Speaker
And this, for me, I think this year symbolises how change is happening and change is going to happen with really great food. You know, I think it's a lot easier for us to promote veganism and get people interested if the food is of of excellent quality um and and so these cakes have sent, you could give them to anyone, they wouldn't have to be vegan and they'd be amazed by them and that's the thought sort of thing we need to get out there to to help people get into that. I know that is just kind of more from the plant-based aspect but that will hopefully lead to people embracing the diet side of things anyway and you a hopefully you know expanding that view as well.
00:16:13
Speaker
hear, hear, Paul, wise words. the yeah The chief baker in my household overheard Paul's message when I first played it back to just to listen through and they piped up saying that the way to people's hearts is through their stomachs and that's definitely the case with the those delicious pictures which we have put a link to in the show notes. so if you want see what Paul has been gorging on over the last few days, I don't think he ate all the cakes in the picture, but it's a rather impressive display of vegan patisserie in Paris. Now Paul will be featuring not just in our news review special coming out at the turn of the year, but also on Christmas Day, our
00:16:59
Speaker
festive quiz, he will be up against Kate amongst other competitors. Kate, who listeners will know regularly joins us on the show and as well as being recorded for enough of the Falafel podcasts over the last 12 months, has also had some footage taken of her ahead of a piece of film where they're going to be focusing quiz quite how transformative a whole foods plant-based diet has been on Kate's health. So that's probably coming up in 2026. But before then, let's hear Kate's Christmas card to you, the Enough The Falafel listeners, 2025.

Kate's Activism Highlights

00:17:44
Speaker
Seasons greetings dear listeners, it's Kate with you here. hope you have a fun fantastic time and and you get some time off to do whatever you want to do. My highlights of this year on the podcast, so one that gave me absolute joy was the news that the vegan land movement, they go from strength to strength and they managed to sneakily buy up even more land. That would have gone to animal ag.
00:18:10
Speaker
yeah, field number eight. And so that just makes me so happy. It's a proper win for the animals. And we did have some great chats, the conversations that were questioning what kind of activism actually works. That really, really interests me. i think it interests all of us, doesn't it? We all want to know what to do. kind to What's going to change people?
00:18:33
Speaker
And I still don't think we know quite what is the best way, but just all I know is that Anything we can do in whatever way resonates with us and feels right to us, then that is the right thing to do. just wish a vegan world would hurry up, eh? I'll be spending time with family and friends, the majority of whom are vegan, so I appreciate how lucky I am. But also be doing extra part runs on Christmas Day and New Year's Day with my vegan runner friends repping for the animals. Yay! That's always fun, I love that.
00:19:08
Speaker
So my holiday gift to you, if you haven't less listened yet, is the Sentientism podcast with Jamie Woodhouse, who's an absolutely lovely guy. I met him at Vegan Campout two years ago.
00:19:21
Speaker
He puts animals right at the centre, has some amazing guests, and they're not all vegan. So that's interesting too, because it's a lesson to me. in how to talk humbly to people about their beliefs and choices, bringing in philosophy, social science, education.
00:19:38
Speaker
he asks what's real and what matters and how do we make a better world, a one where animals are front and centre of our considerations. So give that one a go And I have put another give for you. Woohoo! So um I've just learnt this and it's so easy. i never ate the animal version before. went before I was vegan because it was slimy and disgusting. and But it's carrot smoked salmon and there's a brilliant recipe on the ProVeg website. So you just steam whole carrots for about 10 minutes and then you chill them and you take one of those little hand peelers and you shave off strips and you stick them in a marinade of nori, salt, vinegar, liquid smoke.
00:20:26
Speaker
and I use lemon juice as well. Leave them to soak in the fridge for like a day or two days to soak up all that lovely flavour. And then you put them on top of crackers or toast with some vegan cream cheese and you can either use the shop-bought you can make the whole food version which is say from cashew cheese. You soak them, you blend them with a hand blender, You add a bit of myso, especially the white myso if you've got that. And it's absolutely delicious. So yeah, you'll guess if you have any friends or family around, they'll be impressed with that, I'm sure.
00:21:05
Speaker
Anyway, have a fabulous time sending you all big virtual hugs um and see you in the new year. a Brilliant. Thank you, Kate, for that Christmas card and really enjoying the sound of those ah carrot locks. I think they're often called, aren't they? Those salmon-y tasting deliciousness. I've got a little cheeky recipe to share with folk myself. However, before I share my own Christmas card, we have had a last minute Christmas miracle, a last bit of mail coming in all the way from New Zealand from the very brilliant Mark, who has been with us for nearly two years now, giving fantastic animal rights and vegan commentary every few weeks. So without further ado, let's hear Mark's Christmas message.

Mark Reflects on Vegan Movement Growth

00:22:02
Speaker
hi everyone this is mock humanity here regular presenter and co-host of enough of the falafel. Christmas is a funny time of year. The animal rights struggle is ah one that is full of ups and downs, a bit like Christmas. Just in the last couple of days, right, Irish dairy farmers have been given the green light to continue their planet-killing ways with yet more nitrates into the soil and water. Meanwhile, Poland, on the other side of the European bloc, has banned
00:22:35
Speaker
this movement can provoke sadness and joy in measure often. But stepping back, bear in mind this. In the last 81 years, right, the same time as the average human lifetime, you and I have helped to grow a movement, veganism, from a tiny seed into the mighty oak tree that it is today in 2025.
00:22:58
Speaker
Beginning in 1944 and largely ignored at the time, beachhead was established and expanded
00:23:07
Speaker
until we finally began to significantly infiltrate the mainstream about a decade ago. Right? That's young the movement is and how recent or mainstreaming, if you like, has been.
00:23:20
Speaker
Our movement, small as it is, has had massive cut through influencing every important aspect of human behavior across this planet. It's my contention that there have been, that we are currently in the fifth wave of of animal rights activism.
00:23:42
Speaker
now we're at the fifth wave. The current situation where we're small but growing and the tipping points of things like climate change means that we are likely to grow exponentially.
00:23:54
Speaker
ah to enter sixth wave and
00:23:59
Speaker
rised by governments and states around the world beginning to get behind in a serious way the initiatives that we need to see happen. We can see this now with the Danish Green Tripartite Initiative.
00:24:13
Speaker
A plan so radical and reasonable that it's A, about time and B, thank God it's happening. So more of that please. Look, everyone enjoy your Christmas and you'll hear me again in the new year.
00:24:25
Speaker
Bye. Wow, that was an absolutely brilliant message from from Mark there. I didn't know whether we were going to get a message from Mark. All of our contributors lead busy lives, like I'm sure all of you listening. And so it's been a case of squeezing all these messages in at the last minute to to get them out to you in time.
00:24:45
Speaker
And so I wasn't expecting anything from Mark and boy, I'm i'm delighted that he did get one to us. And goodness, yeah, the vegan future, that's that's a really interesting thing to discuss. And i I'd love to go into it even

Podcast Growth and Future Plans

00:25:01
Speaker
more. But for for now, i will get on with the the rest of my own Christmas card, just like like everybody else wanting to wish everyone a really, lovely last couple of weeks of 2025. I hope you get from it what you would like. um My highlight of the last 12 months of Enough of the Falafel probably has been the range of folk that we've had on the show and contacting us. It's really lovely to now be reaping the benefits of of being being in our third year of doing this. um When we started at the outset, myself and Richard, we knew that This was going to be a ah project that had most of its benefits in the long term and we're we're seeing that now. our Our weekly listener numbers are such that we could just about cram all of you into ah a village hall but um it would be a squeeze. We're normally getting about 150 different folk tuning in each week, which is fabulous when you picture all of those people together. That's been steadily growing since we started. um And the range of folk who've been on the show as well has been brilliant. we We've been joined by Elena. for a few episodes this year freedom from south africa has been joining us shane we've already heard from in this episode across in texas usa um as well as folk who've joined us for one-off going vegan shows or we had philip from north london and hunt sabs just really lovely to hear lots of different voices we're a
00:26:39
Speaker
of a movement of many different voices so having that reflected in our show is fantastic and I'm really looking forward to next year having lots more of the same and a few new ideas too. We're going to be kicking off the year with our usual fair as well as re-releasing all 18 of our Going Vegan show so in January you're going to hear everyone who's recorded a Going Vegan show with us. That's going to be re-released for you to listen to if you would like. And I'm hoping to add a couple of new Going Vegan episodes too. We're hoping to be able to come to you in person, some of you that is anyway, in the UK in 2026. We're hoping we're going to be able to be at some festivals, but a lot of work needs to be done before that happens. So fingers crossed for that one and we're hoping we can continue to to spread what we do to more folks so if you would like to be involved with the show either behind the microphone as a one-off or maybe on a regular basis I mean Shane and several other folks started off just being listeners and have decided to come the other side of the microphone that's very welcome But if you would like to help us with marketing or editing or any element of things, you are so, so welcome. You're already part of our community. If you want to take a more active role, then that's great. But there's definitely no pressure. We love having you as listeners. In the next couple of weeks, myself and my wife Alex, we're going away for our annual trip to the Lake District, the northwest of England, to climb a few hills and enjoy a very, very lovely plant-based bakery.

Host's Personal Holiday Plans

00:28:26
Speaker
It's it's almost completely plant-based. They've got a couple of things on their menu that aren't, but as well as that, they've got about 20, 25 different freshly baked vegan pastries and cakes each day which is a a big part of why we drive for three hours to get to that part of the country each year. We're going to be celebrating on Christmas Day with an Austrian traditional Christmas meal because we have been working through the countries of the world one a week cooking something vegan from that part of the world and we are we are on Austria on that week so that's what we're going be doing on Christmas Day. I've got a couple of runs planned in quite exciting places, so that's going to be nice, um as well as spending time with friends and family and catching up. And we've got a special five course taster menu experience at our local
00:29:24
Speaker
local vegan restaurant in Shrewsbury on New Year's Eve, which we're really looking forward to as well. So my Christmas holiday gifts to you, I've got two. The first one is a recipe that I've been doing quite a lot recently. It's made up some of the Christmas presents I'm giving to folk, but I'm also enjoying it myself to consume. And it is taking ah dried fruit and nuts. So generally things like raisins, sultanas, but also cranberries, apricots, um and maybe like blanched almonds, things like that, and steeping them in
00:30:06
Speaker
tea So generally I'll go for a really strong tasting tea like a chai or possibly like a rose, like a floral tasting tea. um I'll steep the tea, so brew the tea with with a teabag, though I suppose you could do it with loose leaf tea as well. and And once it's infused after a few minutes, pouring it over the dried fruit so that it covers it. It doesn't need to cover it, otherwise it will go mouldy quicker. um And once it's cooled down, I tend to do all of that in jugs.
00:30:40
Speaker
Once it's cooled down, I'll then pour them into sterilized jars. You can sterilize them ah by pouring hot water into them, or you can just just put them in the oven, put the jars in the oven um and let them cool down before you pour the mixture in. When you pour the mixture in, make sure that the liquid covers the fruit because like I say if you if it is not covered by the liquid then it will go off after a couple of weeks whereas if it's submerged you'll probably get three or four weeks out of it before it starts to go a bit funky but it looks really nice like I say I've
00:31:19
Speaker
as well as a few other homemade things. It's been my literal Christmas presents to folk, but um I'm sharing it with you guys because actually I've really been enjoying them as a snack.
00:31:31
Speaker
It's very cheap. It's just the cost of the dried fruit and a tea bag, and it stops me eating quite as much chocolate and quite as many sweets. So relatively speaking, it is a much healthier sweet treat. So I very recommend using that recipe for a little treat for yourself or others.

Vegan Mockumentary 'Carnage' as Holiday Gift

00:31:52
Speaker
The second Christmas present that I have got for you is, we probably mentioned it a few times on the show, but there was a film produced by someone called Simon Amstel. He's ah a comedian and he also ah produces TV shows in the UK. um He produced a short film, it's about 45 minutes long, called Carnage in 2017. Simon Amstel is vegan himself and for my money, and I know a lot of people's opinion too, is that it's it's one of the best vegan animal rights focused
00:32:31
