Black Clover Movie & Podcast Introduction

00:00:01
Speaker
On another exciting episode of the Animation Deliberation podcast, the Black Balls are making their movie debut as they are in Black Clover Sword of the Wizard King, now streaming on Netflix. We're going to talk about that much more right after these ads, we have no control over.
00:00:14
Speaker
Sing along if you know the words. One, two, three, it's time for animation, deliberation, conversation, and a celebration of a favorite action animated series, yeah. Welcome back to another episode of Animation Deliberation, the podcast where we take action animation and cartoon seriously, but not too seriously. I'm your host, Suhira Lee, and returning to talk about Black Clover with us today is the one and only co-host of Source Pages, Brian V. Klein. How you doing, bud?
00:00:43
Speaker
I'm doing fantastic. How are you doing? I don't know why I went into my bouncer voice there. I went deep all of a sudden. Let me see if I can fool them, see if it's someone else. I almost sounded like when they overdub like bad, like not bad Asian movies, but when they overdub them bad, it doesn't match the guy's mouth moving. It's like, oh, I have the full knob. I will defeat you. Yes.

Listener Excitement & Reviews

00:01:08
Speaker
Hey, thanks for having me back to talk some more Black Clover.
00:01:12
Speaker
Yeah, man, this was exciting. And as I sent you, which I should have responsibly pulled up before we started, but we got very carried away, we got a five star review that was actually them being excited that we talked black clover. So I'm going to give a little excerpt of that as soon as I'm not done and able to pull it up. Of course, I'm seeing like little
00:01:38
Speaker
It's like all pixelated, I can't even read it. That's why our show, Hailey reads the reviews at the beginning when we do it. And then at the end, I read off our list of podcasts that we support. And then by that, like usually when she's giving her spiel, I'm like, oh crap, I got to pull up Apple Podcast to see what that list is. And so I'm doing it all nice and quiet and then be like, okay, by the way, here's Sparks podcast buddies. And then just list all the guys that be having our show notes, the links. But a lot of times it's like, I never had that up and ready.
00:02:08
Speaker
All right, listeners, this is why we need you to send in more five star reviews so that we look at them more often and that we get like the flow of this. So I'm not finagling when our guest is here. We don't like to look bad in front of our guests. Stop wasting my time.
00:02:24
Speaker
Yeah, so I'm just going to read a part of it, but we got a five-star view from Rael, Dave, that said, first, let me say, well, the caption is finally a Black Clover episode. First, let me say how much I love animation deliberation. The host really delves in. Delve with much depth into each series or movie they cover. But while they've mentioned Black Clover in the past, they never dedicated an episode to Black Clover, one of my favorite anime series. Well,
00:02:51
Speaker
Here you go. We had a little primer just geeking out about all the stuff. No focus whatsoever. It's like the format we have at source pages. We bring up a topic a lot of times. And if we're not following a format, it's just like two people talking about it. And then it doesn't seem forced. So next thing you know, an hour later, we're still talking about, did we actually get to the point that we wanted to talk about? Ah, they'll figure it out.
00:03:16
Speaker
Like we were just talking about like top five theme songs. It's like what number are we

Black Clover Movie & Season 5 Speculations

00:03:20
Speaker
on? We've talked about everything But that was a fun episode nerding out about that and now we're gonna talk about the movie for a little bit and We do have confirmation that there is going to be a season five The last that I saw it was supposed to be like towards the end of 2025 I haven't heard any change on that lately
00:03:39
Speaker
I saw something recently that said maybe expect it a little bit sooner than you think they've officially announced it's going to happen. Just not when, and everyone knows with anime, they can announce something. One man punch season three.
00:03:55
Speaker
Um, and you never know, it could be five years down the line or it could be like demon slayer where they announce it and the next season's coming months, you know, or it just seems like holy cow. This season just ended the next, although when they break them down, like demon slayer into shorter art, not full seasons, like first season, it's probably a little bit easier because they're making them continuously. But yeah. Um, man, I tell you what though season five is going to have a whole different trajectory in my mind after watching the movie though. So.
00:04:23
Speaker
In what sense? In the sense that basically Asta being one of the last things that Julius said to him when he's just like, yeah, pretty much everything's just floating. Well, the warning, everybody, we're just diving into it now. Well, when he's like, when he gives him the imperial sword to defeat, I want to call him Clovis, it's not Clovis, it's Conrad. And he's just like, yeah, pretty much all of this stuff goes through you now.
00:04:51
Speaker
And then he's like, what? And then that's when he's fighting with the good and evil side of him. Not good, but like the devil and angel side, if you want to call it. And so, but I still like that you saw the little tag at the end, like the mid credit scene or end credit scene where him and
00:05:06
Speaker
You know, decided like we had to fight at the beginning. Let's fight again. And they're just like, they're always going to be that, you know, brotherly, you know, you're my rival, although it seems like Asta has a whole bunch of rivals now. But that's just because, you know, think about it from the beginning. So if you look at the first episode of Black Clover to the movie.
00:05:24
Speaker
It's not even like the same character, which is almost all. Yeah. Yeah, it looks good. That's one of the reasons I appreciate the show so much, and it has a lot of similarities to Naruto in that sense where it's like if you're just looking at Naruto in just episode one and then seeing him after the first arc and ship it in like so much growth, so much development. We were actually talking about the show with
00:05:46
Speaker
I was comparing My Hero Academia to Naruto. That was one of the closest shows to make me care about all the characters that ever come on screen and how there's relevance and every time they're in their important part of the scene. Black Clover is another one that really does a good job with that.
00:06:03
Speaker
I know exactly what you're saying here, too, is that you do care for the people you care about. Even in the movie, he had a couple of cameo moments, but the ha-ha guy who's in there, and it's just like, oh yeah, he's the ha-ha guy, but he's the one. Let's just turntail and run.
00:06:23
Speaker
Okay, just be quiet for a

Character Exploration: Asta & Imperial Sword

00:06:25
Speaker
little bit. Here's the opportunity for you know, the hero speech to come in here because this guy's loud he's actually like Influencing everyone to give up and maybe we can go to one of the other kingdoms and this and that it's like no We are freaking sorcerers. We are the defenders of the Clover Kingdom. We are not going anywhere Who's with me? Right and that's that's all that's awesome. I mean, not only does he have
00:06:49
Speaker
this anti magic power, which ends up becoming now that he's becoming a little bit more OP. Because remember, at the end of season four, the last thing we saw is that him finally going like he's making peace and making up like a partnership with his demon. See, I don't, I don't watch Naruto because the first few seasons of animation of that were so bad. So
00:07:14
Speaker
What's that? I'm just kidding. I remember Angie saying I haven't heard that in a while, so it took me a minute to remember that you are bringing that up and not trying. No, I'm just totally kidding. I was actually triggered for a second. I was like, whoa, whoa, whoa. I want to give a jab to Andrew there. But yeah, his his anti magic power because he made the pack is like.
00:07:39
Speaker
it stronger it gets stronger like in this movie. It was pretty much just like everything all these there's not only the one wizard king, there's four of them that are coming at them. And it's just I just had to ask you this because I know that you we talked after the first time you saw it and you said that you were whelmed with the movie like this year. After you saw it the second time did it change at all like make you a little more appreciative of it or just been like yeah, this is what it is.
00:08:05
Speaker
I liked it more watching it in English because that's just what I was used to. So I think it was a mix of being tired, then adjusting the voices and like, I was really trying to fit the movie in that Friday night because I had like so much stuff going on in the weekend. So it's like once I watched it again, like in a commerce state, where I was just relaxing and with the voices I was familiar with, I enjoyed it a little bit more.
00:08:29
Speaker
I enjoyed seeing my favorite characters doing the things that they do more than I cared about the storyline, if that makes sense. As a Black Clover fan, I enjoyed them display... The animators were just geeking out, right? They were just like, we just want an excuse to animate Black Clover characters. We're just going to bullshit a story so that we can do that.
00:08:58
Speaker
But the story in itself makes good enough sense. But at the end of the day, just one of those ones, it doesn't yet, but it doesn't, I don't think it really matters except for the fact that in season five, we probably should see the aftermath of them, you know, cleaning up the Clover Kingdom because it was, the plan was. Because right now this isn't canon either. It's like one of those things like it could be, but it's technically not.
00:09:20
Speaker
No, but the creator said that it's based off of it's not based off. It's not canon in the sense it's based off a manga, but the guy that writes the manga and does that, you know, he has a story, wrote the story for this. So I would think them being like I think that it would be easy enough to pick up a little bit of it before it doesn't. There's many changes to the story that if you didn't see this, except for maybe like, oh, yeah, at the beginning of season five,
00:09:48
Speaker
Uh, we're still cleaning up the damage from when the wizard kings attacked, like how they had to clean up all the damage after like the elf uprising and stuff like that. So, but yeah, I mean, it just showed again.

Power Dynamics & Comparisons to Naruto

00:10:00
Speaker
How powerful, you know, remember how Asta used to have to like catch rides with everybody. Now he just jumps on one of the swords and like rides it like a surfboard. So yeah, if this was during that like four month training arc, it could make sense.
00:10:19
Speaker
But that's the only timeframe I can think of where it's like the skill set to everyone being available matches up. Yeah, I think the only ones that kind of would stick out a bit was Marilona obviously got a lot more powerful and a haircut. And, um,
00:10:39
Speaker
Julius is obviously going to keep getting older as he becomes, I mean, he ages back up after losing all those years when the whole thing that which caused Conrad and them to be freed from this because that whole portion of the Alpha pricing.
00:11:02
Speaker
What did you think about it overall? I liked it. I watched it again this past weekend. I didn't realize this was the third time I saw it and it is basically almost two hours long and there's probably an hour and a half of action in this movie.
00:11:19
Speaker
It is constantly just like fighting, fighting, fighting. It's almost like, I don't know if you've seen Dial of Destiny yet. It's like that much amount of like percentage of action in the movie, like stuff going on. But it's all, yeah, you're right.
00:11:34
Speaker
you know, the. Just them being able to showcase all the stuff they could do, you know, you know, tapping in with his with the pixie, I want to say pixie power, but when spirit. Yeah. So when he gets like that, the spirit upgrade and you are asked to obviously when he goes to his the black, his black form
00:11:58
Speaker
and just gets, you know, even more powerful. But just seeing, although they did do the same thing as two when they were sitting there and finally Yami shows up and he's like, sorry, it took so long, but I was taking a dump and I couldn't get there. He's like, there you go. They didn't change anything with the characters. So. Yeah. That was the fun of the movie for me is that, again, they just wanted to animate them without having to really think about a story.
00:12:25
Speaker
And I feel like this would have worked better as an arc because even the second time I was watching this, I was like,
00:12:32
Speaker
Either the Clover Kingdom's really bad at electing kings or it really is like a power grab because even after they took out Conrad in the flashback, which oh my god seeing baby Yami was amazing. But when Julius was like, I'm the wizard king now, it's like, okay, maybe it is just a power grab. Like whoever just is worthy of the role, like fights the king to be the next one. But then towards the end, like that was when Julius was like, yeah, he was a beloved king and he loved his people and this and this.
00:13:02
Speaker
So there was that portion of it for me to care about Conrad and understand why he was a king to begin with. I don't think they emphasized that enough until the credits were already rolling. Had that been more of an important factor, like a flashback of the people caring about him and what led to him wanting to just kill everybody, it may have helped a little bit.
00:13:24
Speaker
They were only explaining at the end when, after they had defeated him and Asta's like, how was I able to use the imperial sword? And Julius explains that it was because, you know, all the past wizard kings and Conrad was a beloved king. He was able to do the stuff and then the royals framed him and he lost his, what would they say, his lost his wife and kids and stuff like that.
00:13:49
Speaker
And so then he was like, he was never the same then. So it pretty much like they broke the, the Royals broke them. And we saw how even in the current age, how the Royals are pretty much just a bunch of dicks. Yeah. You know, a lot of them are just, Oh, you know, up until, um, what's his, I can see the newer guys in the black bowls, the guy that's got the, like the, um, mask with like the saber teeth.
00:14:14
Speaker
Oh, the trap guy. Yeah, whose dad was the first, you know, non noble to become a magic knight. And he got killed because the other nobles that were magic knights were like, you guys, you know, common folk can't become magic knights. So that was still in recent time that it was like integrated other than if you weren't noble or a noble, then you couldn't become a magic knight. So
00:14:40
Speaker
It's bothering me what his name is now. I'd say, yeah, the Black Bull who like false identity. Yeah. I just typed in Black Bull's trap magic. Yeah, he again, there was a lot of cool, you know, a lot of the ways they dealt with the four like with them. The way that I would appreciate the most I think about this movie is the way that they incorporated everyone's magic to
00:15:10
Speaker
team up with each other. Like they were being able to trap them and then they got inside and then he uses, used what's his name's magic to send them off to different places. So they separated all four of them. So now they're on an attack, which was kind of funny because like the one was against Marilona and then the one was against, you know, and then, but then, you know, grabs, you know, Julius and Silva and the other Vermillion. So he's got three, he's got
00:15:37
Speaker
you know, who's pretty much like the second most powerful person pretty much now, and three other captains. And then the old dude that's the ice is literally facing
00:15:47
Speaker
everybody else. It was basically him versus the Black Bulls. Him versus the Black Bulls, which I also love now when they had the fact when they found Henry and they're able to turn the Black Bulls hideout into a walking whatever. This time it was a spaceship. Look at all of our guests. I love 100 talks like that. I've never felt
00:16:12
Speaker
this much mana. And it was the same trick that they did when the elves took over at night, where it was just feed everybody then fire off the cannons, they lose their mana feed them again, let Vanessa change reality and like, Oh, that was really cool. Yeah, especially because that's like what that's the one time that they have what's her face.
00:16:35
Speaker
I can't think of her name, not Swarmy. The one that makes the food. All she does is sits there and makes the food that replenishes the mana. Because especially in the season four we talked about where they go to the heart kingdom and she's just sitting on the lap of the queen. Charming. Charming, that's it.
00:16:54
Speaker
So Charming just made all she's doing, everyone eat up. And they show all of her sheep cooks going across and meeting everyone. And even Asta's sitting there eating everything, and he's like, wait a second, you don't have magic. The food's still good. Yeah. Yeah, they're just like sitting, having this important meeting, and she's just coming up casually behind everyone, dropping off the plates. Yeah. It's just like, well, here you go. Because the thing was is that
00:17:18
Speaker
the sword for the people that haven't really seen this, the sword that he used, the imperial sword that Conrad had, which by the way, so everyone knows that Julius, or they may not, his magic is time magic, and he was able to... Conrad wanted to pretty much blow up the Clover Kingdom and start over. And so they trapped him in a time thing. And like resurrect the people he felt worthy of being in.
00:17:42
Speaker
The New Kingdom. They could keep all because his sword absorbed magic from people that pretty much sucked the magic out. And so when he came back, his thing was he was sucking all the magic out because the thing started. They had the triumph games where it was pretty much just like every 10 years or so, which was kind of convenient because it had been 10 years since they had trapped him.
00:17:59
Speaker
It's a dumb time frame. Yeah, it seems like it should have been longer. But some of that stuff was like somebody was at his prime, like, you know, like he's like 18 or like 20 and like competing. And then like the next time he comes back, it's 30 and his knees don't work. Like, come on. Should be like the Olympics. The one thing about the one thing about any anime, though, is that the time frame, the way that the people look
00:18:28
Speaker
I remember watching it in, I don't know if you've ever watched Food Wars at all, but these people are supposed to be like incoming freshmen and they all look like they're in like their late 20s as far as like their bill or even like in digestive guys hand. Some of the guys look like they're like 35 years old and you're supposed to be a
00:18:47
Speaker
I have Toto's a junior junior in high school like really, but that goes back to even some of the like the sort of the anime is from the 90s where these kids are in seventh grade. They're like that guy's driving. So yeah, age is sort of like a speculative number almost so.
00:19:08
Speaker
Yeah, in terms of like the the combo magic, you knows it was really fun to watch for that because like I love when Fuegolion and Nozal have to work together. Mm hmm. Because they're just so incredibly powerful. And the fact that like one has like an eagle and the other has dragon is so cool. But the way that they made their entrance in it is like, we're backing you up with such a huge recognition of how freaking powerful and efficient that you know is.
00:19:36
Speaker
between that and a combination that they even, uh, the guy they were fighting even sad. He's like, you guys have, you guys have had your power drained all day. You're not at full strength. How are you guys expecting to defeat me? They're like, well, we've got this kid here who's only been, you know, I think that they've only been magic nights for like a year really. And yeah. I don't know if he's royalty yet. Yeah.
00:20:02
Speaker
And he's going to be, I think it's actually kind of cool the way that they've turned because like the whole Silva clan was the way they treated Noel was just terrible. I mean, obviously, you know, like she didn't have the same control and her birth killed their mom who was a powerful wizard.
00:20:17
Speaker
But then after that whole arc they had, where it was sort of like a redemption for them, now, like Nozell. And the other two siblings are still pretty shitty. Oh, yeah. But the one that's the leader. Nozell, yeah. Yeah, Nozell. He has a lot more, especially in the year when Yami's like, hey, I remember when we fought last time and you cried like a baby and pissed your pants afterwards. The picture between them never gets old.
00:20:47
Speaker
Yeah, it's just a lot more. It's definitely one of those shows that.
00:20:53
Speaker
when you keep, when you watch the whole thing, the development of the relationships between the people that you think have no reason to have any relationship like Yami and I'm losing the name, the guy that ends up becoming the head of the elves who's got the big scar on his face that wears the mask. Why do you keep asking the ones that don't hunger? Their backstory is fantastic. I mean, we just don't know Yami's backstory. We know he's from one of the other kingdoms. He's not born in Clover Kingdom.
00:21:21
Speaker
They do a good job of teasing though. Like they eventually get to it. Yeah. I think they'll, they'll end up because especially it's one of those ones I want to continue reading cause the manga is over. Manga is done. And so being able to watch it unfold, I like, I like it's just William. What's that? William vongence. Yeah.
00:21:43
Speaker
So, but I definitely want to, um, I keep reading too. I mean, you may know more about this is, is demon slayer, a manga that is pretty much a short manga run and it's over. That's what I've been saying. Because I was saying like the next arc, which is the, uh, the, the training arc training arc. And then they're like, there's only one or two more arcs after that. And it's over. That's what I've been hearing. I'm like, is I didn't realize that the manga was only like a,

Anime Adaptation & Global Success

00:22:10
Speaker
that short then because with having it that little of arcs, but hey, if it... Yeah, there's a few things from Entertainment District where it's like, like Gyotaro and Uzui's fights were only like five pages and we went and like confirmed that. So it really is the animation studio that's really stretching it out. But the series itself is apparently not that long.
00:22:33
Speaker
Yeah. Well, speaking of animation, there are some of the fight scenes in here. Speaking of animation. Well, the animation, not all of animation.
00:22:41
Speaker
This is an episode of animated. We talk about your time to time. Speaking of the animation of the Black Clover movie, there were some scenes that had that that effect, like sometimes when you're watching the Demon Slayer and they're doing the quick stuff, even while I'm finally catching up because the dubs are coming out of the swordsmith village. And the last one I watched, I think was episode six, the one at the end where
00:23:10
Speaker
Yeah, but we could talk about that another episode. Okay. But yeah, in this movie, there were some times when they were doing it, I'm like, my God, this animation is beautiful. And because those fights especially. Yeah, that end though, when they had
00:23:25
Speaker
when the Doom guard or whatever he used, where he's like, I'm giving up my life to do this. And then it explodes in the sky. And you could see the sunrise and then the plane from the ground. It's like, oh my God, I just go. I want to take a screenshot of that and have that as being like my wallpaper on my computer. Because it was just so gorgeous. Yeah, even the way that it opened it up, I was like, man, I love the studio so much.
00:23:50
Speaker
It's a Studio Piero that does Naruto Black Clover and the bleach. Yeah, definitely you could tell styles of what shows are made by what things because it's just like they look a lot the same. I like that very basic, clean look on anime too. A lot of ones like Mappa does a really good job at stuff. They're the ones who do Jujutsu Kaisen, the new
00:24:18
Speaker
Attack on Titan Chainsaw man, and it's like it's heavy and it's very detailed But like sometimes it's at risk of being clunky when they throw in too much 3d stuff but the way that Naruto black clover and Things like spy family just like had the clean look of it is something that I really appreciate I think Demon Slayer is kind of like the best of both Yeah, I'm catching up. I'm almost done with
00:24:45
Speaker
I think I got what spy family has 25 episodes in season one. I think so. I think I'm on episode 19 right now because I had to wait. They had like a lull in releasing the was it you that sent me the no someone sent me a thing where there is a.
00:25:03
Speaker
Um, like on one of the TVs in Japan, it's Anya that comes up. She was like, hi, everyone. I need you to ask. I need to ask you a favor. Can you please watch my show's new season in October? I'm like, that's the greatest drop for a new season I've ever seen. Oh, that's nice. Yeah, they're getting a movie in December, too.
00:25:23
Speaker
Oh, spy family is I think spy family is one of those ones that is it's it's kind of funny how you can tell the international success because I think you were the one that sent me that thing that Hulu now is really dropping in and focusing on the their anime department. Yeah, they're making a whole other streaming service that's just animated content.
00:25:47
Speaker
So, but when you go now into like hot topic and you see there's so much crap out there now for spy family and chainsaw man and jiu-jitsu kazan. It's just like animation shows for kids. Yeah, but it's just that. But the thing is, though, there are so many you go on.
00:26:09
Speaker
I've got Crunchyroll and Funimation and there's stuff that they overlap between the two, but there's some stuff that's only on one and some stuff that's on the other. And then I had to, there was another one I had to use to get like the last couple of seasons of Food Wars on there. And I'm like, none of the animation, whatever that animation is on that service is only on that service. I'm like, holy, and there's new stuff coming out. So it's just like, you got to think of like animation, anime in Japan is like sitcoms here in America. Like, you know, a few of them know a good amount of them.
00:26:38
Speaker
You'll have no idea what they are. Yeah, there's a trending show right now that I've been seeing a lot of stuff about that I've been wanting to watch, but it's not on any of the services that we just mentioned. And it's like, man, it's too much work to bootleg stuff. Like, please just put this up somewhere where I can, it was an Oshinoko. Okay.
00:27:00
Speaker
I don't know the one that I keep seeing which is I think it's getting a lot more I mean, it's been again for me to a lot of the ways that I know something is could be worthy to watch is like when all of a sudden Funko decides to release a wave of figures from it. And I've always wanted to Naruto exposures coming from now. Hey, that's how I got exposed to vampire rain back on one piece. Yeah.

Shared Universes & Character Reuse

00:27:26
Speaker
Oh my god.
00:27:27
Speaker
That's just a whole, I mean, I love the show. I'm almost out of the episode. I had to take a break from it because I didn't want to watch it, but I started watching Spy Family again. I had no idea that Eden Zero, which was the creator of Fairy Tail before he started Fairy Tail 100 Year Quest, he wrote another, and it's still going on, it's called Eden Zero.
00:27:49

And it's the first season of it is on Netflix. And so I watched that and I'm like, this is awesome. But they literally use some of the same characters from fairy tale. It's they're in space.
00:28:00
Speaker
there's a space the spaceship is eating zero and one of the characters is happy which is the blue cat but in this one he's a robot so it's just like but there's times when you're watching the show like you could see natsu and lucy like in the background doing stuff i'm like is this it's gotta be in the same universe and then one of the characters is just like ursa scarlet but her name is something crimson instead
00:28:20
Speaker
And it's voiced by Colin Klinkenbeard. And it's like, oh my God, this guy is just using the same characters. But instead of it being like a wizard, the thing, it's like cyborgs and androids and in space. But I loved it, though. It was so much fun. Interesting. Was that a short thing or was it just one season's dropped?
00:28:38
Speaker
One season's dropped, the second season is on Crunchyroll, the first 15 episodes, I think, but it's only subbed right now. So, you know, me, especially when I get so used to it. I tried watching some of the things, like even with, it's killing me right now that you got two episodes of season two of Jiu-Jitsu Kazan and it's like, I haven't been able to watch it yet because I have to watch it and I have to watch the dub.
00:29:02
Speaker
Because it's what the voices are like to me. Otherwise, it's just like everyone sounds the same. I'm sorry. I'm not I always had new Japanese. And in case you're not aware, that one's the arcs are split up as the first five episodes and the last 18 or two different arcs. So if you're in a binging mood, you can like wait for those first five episodes to come out. OK, cool. Yeah, that's definitely a fun zone. If not, that's one of those ones, too, that.
00:29:27
Speaker
my anime I like seems to have a little bit more of the, I mean, Demon Slayer can be very serious and very violent and bloody, but then it could turn around and make you laugh your ass off. So I mean, I've seen though in the first episode of this season where he's just like,
00:29:44
Speaker
Eh, if he's dead, if Inosuke's dead, then I must have been losing anything, because he's out in the ceiling right now, and then you look up there and he's like, I've been up there for like, what, 10 hours or something? Did you catch the after credit of that? Yeah. Yeah. But they were doing the little, like, the little, like, cheaty animation. No, just a tiny lapse of him just, like, shaking hold onto it. Yeah.
00:30:03
Speaker
But yeah, see, that's that's the point. But sometimes like Jujitsu Kaizan has that too, where it could be very serious, very violent. And then all of a sudden, it's just like, you know, with Toto and Gojo was just perfect. Yeah, even one of my shows that's like an underrated, but I love the show Tokyo Ghoul has that too, where it's very serious, but there's times where it could be like,
00:30:24
Speaker
It makes you laugh. So you can't all be so downtrodden that you don't want to watch next because it makes you feel like you want to just like lay down and contemplate everything too much.
00:30:35
Speaker
For me, anime is a great way to release and unwind even if it is this past season of My Hero, where it's just like, oh my god, I can't stop because it's just in your face, in your face, in your face, in your face. I love it. Just to get away from the real world and just live in this fantasy world is a lot of fun and very underrated.
00:30:55
Speaker
Yeah. And I'm just so glad because like you said, I've watched stuff. I think the next thing I just, I finished rewatching for the 10th time, the first season of Try Gun, which was on back around the same time. It's like Cowboy Bebop and Shamaroi Champlow, all those things were on back on. I remember the Adult Swim stuff.
00:31:15
Speaker
Yeah. What was the Toonami? All that stuff that was on Saturday nights, but they created a new one for Hulu, a new Trigon. I think it's called Trigon Stampede, but they don't have the dubstep for it yet. That's definitely one show that I loved the voices of it. I can't imagine Spike Siegel not being Jeff Bloom, who I just happened to see interviewed. I was at a panel a month and a half ago down in Nashville, saw him and it was so cool.
00:31:45
Speaker
I know this is a Black Clover episode, but since we're talking about old anime, have you watched any of the new, well, probably not because it's not subbed yet, or dubbed yet, the new Roroni Kenshin? No. Were you a fan of the original? I watched some of it, but...
00:32:02
Speaker
I think the thing was with me was back then there was, it was a time when a lot of that stuff came out was when I was with, um, by first who ended up being my first, uh, fiance type thing. And so stuff didn't go great with that. And so I, I lost track of a lot of things. And also back then, if you miss something, this was like in the late nineties or a few thousands, you can't catch up. They don't rerun.
00:32:27
Speaker
They don't. I mean, that's why with me with a lot of stuff, I was watching One Piece religiously when I could see it. And then it just fell off because I just had no time for it. And then it just like you didn't record it and you didn't know. So now that everything is available with streaming and also like with box sets and stuff like that. I remember a few years ago when I finally was able to finish watching the Anjanis' Evangelion. And that was one that was just like,
00:32:55
Speaker
I think that might be the one that's the consistently darkest and it's kind of got some morbid themes in it, but it's just so intriguing.

Dark Themes in Neon Genesis Evangelion

00:33:04
Speaker
It's almost like, you ever watched that in the end Genesis? It's kind of, it's kind of Robo techy and it's kind of, excuse me. What do they call the things like with the, where they control the giant robots? Gundams? Gundams, they're sort of like that too.
00:33:20
Speaker
but they're not in, they're piloting the things, but not in them. So anyways, yeah, we jumped so far away from that.
00:33:28
Speaker
I mean, at some point I was going to ask you what else you're watching in animation realm. So I guess we just, you know, put that in the middle. I mean, do you have anything else to say about the Black Clover movie? Um, no, I mean, I enjoyed it. Like I said, at the end of the day, it is a movie that if it fits in there, it'll fit in. It's not going to really change much. No one died.
00:33:50
Speaker
Black Clover is one of those shows that has very heavy plot armor, you know, just like, you know, most other shows too. Like, I don't know what I mean. But even with this new season, like I was definitely worried about everyone. Oh, yeah. I did like at the end when they were doing the big fight.
00:34:11
Speaker
They busted out the Hyrule Karimae song, which is one of my favorite songs from when we had the song part of it. Because it's got the buildup and then the slow part and then it hits you again and it's just like that's how the fight was. Definitely go on Spotify and listen to Black Clover. It's got a great playlist of all the songs on there.
00:34:32
Speaker
But I think Black Clover to me Black Clover, Fire Force, One Piece, My Hero. Again, watch it because the bad animation. They all have such great music and it's just they're they're bops, man. So
00:34:54
Speaker
One person that we need to give a little more love to is Marilyona. That action sequence between her and the other king, Funny Bunny, I had to make sure I heard that right.
00:35:09
Speaker
was absolutely fantastic, but her speech that she gave was almost a more aggressive version of Captain America's if you die get back up. Oh, yeah, there's just everything about that like the build up of like the black bull showing up for everybody and like going along with her plan and just how all that played out and
00:35:27
Speaker
Just all of it was so, so good. And she did the thing. She's like, if you if you survive this and you defeat or defeated and survive, I'll still kill you. Like she was basically like, if you don't win, but you don't die, then you're still going to die. Yeah. But she was just I mean, even though her fight scene, too, is just like what you think. You think she's she's dead. She's not moving. She's just gone. And then she just lifts her head up. Yeah. She was round three.
00:35:54
Speaker
It's like, what? And then, you know, again, she was you could tell she was pissed because at the end when Asta defeated Conrad, the other three wizard kings sort of.
00:36:05
Speaker
dissolved back out because they were only brought in there by him. And it was just like, man, they could have kept getting a Captain America line. I could do this all day because I think they were pretty much evenly matched on top of the fact that she, they showed that training sequence with her where she was pretty much just like coming out of a wall, coming out of lava. It's like getting buck naked, jumping into a, uh, a lava pit and just like, you know, just standing. I could see her like clenched hands, like, oh, like give me more. And then she's just, yeah.
00:36:36
Speaker
that I loved when she first see her and asked, I was like, hey, big sis, Leo on and, you know, like, who you call big sis? You know, like, I'm not your big sis. Everybody by the head with their fire. With their fire. Yeah. But then, yeah, like her brothers combined and like big sis, big sis was like, well, that's because she is a big sis. She's that, I think if anything, she might have like a little bit of
00:37:00
Speaker
I don't know if I want to call it because you can't say they have Asperger's anymore, but she's a little bit on just I mean, a lot of those guys have their mindsets. She's a little Sheldon ish, I guess. Yeah, be honest. But yeah, she's one of my favorite characters. Yeah, she's just never fails to impress. Yeah. But even the little things they did when they had like Jack show up and I love Jack because I mean, he does that like to kick it.
00:37:24
Speaker
Yeah, just having everyone that was a part of it is at least a little bit in this movie, except for the king, which is fine, because that guy's a total putz. We didn't get enough of the sleeping captain. I love her so much. Yeah, but she was awake. She even said this. She's like, I'm so glad I'm awake to see this. It really feels like it's a dream. Yeah. So, yeah, I mean, again, before we talk about it.
00:37:51
Speaker
I think this movie works great as a, even like we're talking about, it is the sum of a whole bunch of parts too, but I guess the whole plot of it is a little bit...

Future of Black Clover Content

00:38:04
Speaker
Yeah, because I binged this whole series this year for the very first time. I knew nothing about it. I went in absolutely blind. So for the fans who got the last bit of it in 2021 and haven't seen any Black Clover, I feel like this was a really fun time for them to just see the characters again, which I feel like was the goal. I'm trying to look from that perspective.
00:38:28
Speaker
of the people who are just kind of like, oh, thank God, we get to see something to hold us over until more content comes. If you are one of those people who have been following the show, like, please write in your feedback and let us know, like, what you thought of that if you were happy with it. Because I was entertained. But at the same time, like I had the bar of like, just seeing for the first time, what, two, three months ago.
00:38:49
Speaker
Yeah, I think you said you were doing it when you were watching it when you were recovering from your shoulder. Collider reported a couple weeks ago, they said, right now, it looks like we could possibly get season five of Black Clover in the fall of 2024. So that's only a little over a year away. It's not bad. No. So there's so much content coming out, like I'll definitely be kept busy until then.
00:39:11
Speaker
Well, and even if my mind too is like, sometimes like I started a little while ago or rewatch of fairy tale, which I get like an episode or two in when I can. And then all of a sudden the other day I decided, I'm like, I want to rewatch Hunter Hunter again. So it's just like, my God, I don't know if I'm ever going to catch up to one piece, which is fine because again, yeah, you saw like that. You sent me that picture where it's like, Hey, I'm starting one piece. This is this giant, like what, like a snow thing. And he cuts off a little corner and he's like, I'm a hundred episodes in.
00:39:43
Speaker
Good stuff. Yeah, there is so much good stuff to out there that it's Seven Deadly Sins is one that I wanted to check out because it pops up on my lot of thought of my stuff and it looks like it's up my alley. I like the Crunchyroll and Funimation are very good at if you like stuff, giving you recommendations of things that are pretty close to it.
00:40:06
Speaker
Which is one of the reasons why I think a few years ago I watched that seraph of the end, Vampire Reign, which was probably one of the best first scenes I've ever seen. And then that was in 2014 and they never made season two yet. So that one's probably a DOA one, but it's a really cool concept. So pretty much they use these swords that are controlled by demons. So which seems to be, yeah, it sounds like the plot of a whole bunch of other things.
00:40:35
Speaker
And then one punch man. I need that one to come back. I think I saw somewhere that said that it was in production again now or. Yeah, map was working on. It's going to be here either this year or early next year. Could release in Japan late 2023, early 24 with an English dub released probably mid 2012. About this time next year, one punch man season three should be out. Can't wait. Who is stronger site tomorrow?
00:41:03
Speaker
Uh, it's another one of those. Well, I could give you a little spoiler. There's some times where one punch doesn't work for me. I'm never going to watch it now. I hope you're proud of yourself. What kind of makes sense. Cause otherwise it's just like the show, it's way too overpowered. So.
00:41:21
Speaker
You know, would you, would you be, I was going to, I want to ask you the question. So when you take that power though, that he has, if you had to just do a hundred pushups a day, a hundred setups a day, run 10 K, but it caused you to go completely bald.
00:41:34
Speaker
I'm pretty losing hair. I don't want to say anything, but yeah, I mean he's We're getting there. Yeah, plus for the fact is like he don't give the naff about it Anyway, he'd rather be at home playing video games. Yeah, so same That's exactly what I'm gonna do after we're done with this
00:41:53
Speaker
If I did, if I had the chance, I'm just, the one thing I haven't moved in here yet back at my house, that's 90 miles away from here. I've got my nice, uh, 4k TV and my PS five still there. So I have to have a place. I don't want it around here right now with, um,
00:42:09
Speaker
a six year old and a nine year old they're they're doing well with my 3d tv and my ps4 downstairs i keep telling them i'm like if you're done playing it don't just leave the game on and then a day later we came back and it's still in pause mode on a game like you're gonna burn right into the screen don't want to burn that screen yeah yeah so i mean i know it's a newer tv but that that'll still happen so yep
00:42:31
Speaker
Anything else about the movie? Nope. Go watch it. It's fun. Even if you don't know much about it, you can sort of just see the characters. And I think, I think Black Clover is available on all. I don't know if it's all on Netflix. Maybe it is. I know that you watch it at all. I watched it on Crunchyroll. Okay. Or Funimation. I was using Funimation for a while and then I got Crunchyroll because there was some other stuff I needed to watch. So I just like continued it on there.
00:43:00
Speaker
I like Crunchyroll and all, but I do not like their app as much. Oh, it's garbage. Absolute garbage. Funimation's is good. Hulu's is really good. I like the one thing I like. I don't like Hulu's subtitles. Because they have the translucent box where Crunchyroll has the thick outline text.
00:43:23
Speaker
Yeah, so you don't have anything lost. The one thing I don't like about the, if you watched the dub on Netflix and it's like one piece, one that was originally in Japan, Japanese, they dub the Japanese, uh, script, not the English script.
00:43:43
Speaker
So what you see and what you hear are not always that they have the same context, but it's not word for word. And it gets really, no, cause the only reason why I have subtitles on is sometimes a, now we gotta watch it when the kids are sleeping. And so we got to keep the volume low and B sometimes it's just easier to pick up what they're saying. If you could see it instead of, you know, I don't, I'm not always watching the subtitles because otherwise it won't be watching sub versions of things. But it's just to pick up like, what did they say? Okay, cool. You know, like, because you can't always understand what they're saying.
00:44:13
Speaker
Mm hmm. Apple TV's got this cool feature because there's like a Siri button on the side of the remote. So if you hold it and say, what did they say? It goes back 30 seconds, turns on the subtitles for a little bit and then cuts it off and you're back to like generally the area where you said that to. Mm hmm. That's really neat. Speaking of Apple TV, we fell in love and we're watching almost done with season two of Mythic Quest. That show is so fantastic.
00:44:42
Speaker
Thank God. That's a show I always want to talk to people about. Nobody ever watches it. Yeah, I think one of the last episodes we saw was when I want to just keep, I call him Abed. Abed's brother comes in and he's acting all nice, but he's like, you know, I'm taking this over and I'm writing this to the ground. He's like, oh no. We need to hop on Pandavision when you're done. So yeah, I got to end up here because now I got to go edit our show and then I got another show. Yeah, tell the people about it.
00:45:13
Speaker
Oh yeah. So the show that we're on the network with the same as animation simulation, it's called source pages where we take comics and novels, sometimes mostly comics as primers, continuations, or adaptations for our favorite geeky TV shows and movies. So usually like if a Marvel movie or DC or Star Wars show or movies coming out, we will do a comic run.
00:45:36
Speaker
usually the week or so before the or multiple weeks depending on you know what it is Secret Invasion we had three weeks of rounds up of comics that we read to get people prepared for the show if they have no idea as a primer. So right now we're covering because we have some time off which
00:45:55
Speaker
because there's a strike in the fall, we may have a lot more time off, but we're delving into the whole 2014 or 2015 secret wars, all 136 issues of that. So, uh, yeah, there are episodes are usually 45 minutes to an hour long. And we just talk about the comics. And so you don't have to read them, which we tell you, no, you can read them because it's always cool to do it, but we give you the synopsis of it. So, you know, it's like, um, what is that stuff called? Where was the dummies? Uh, cliff notes.
00:46:26
Speaker
Cliff notes already knows like, you know, comic books for dummies, but we seem to have a fun time when we do it. So it's like this healing and I talking like we were told concept was like, we were just sitting there at a bar, chilling, having a beer, talking about something. And so, so what it is. Yep. Check out source pages. Check out black Clover series and the movie. And we're on every network. You could get us on Apple podcast, Spotify. We got a Facebook group. We got our Facebook page. We got Twitter, Instagram, everything.
00:46:56
Speaker
What's that? I say everywhere. Yeah. But we're not getting on threads. That's what Haley said yesterday. So we're not getting on threads. I'm on threads because I did it by accident. Next thing you know, it took to see people. I'm following on Instagram or something and now I'm following them on thread. So it's like, I love threads. Okay. That's wonderful.
00:47:15
Speaker
Yeah, check out source pages. Check out Black Clover. Listen to more animation deliberation. Obviously, we love five-star reviews, so does source pages, so be sure to leave them in both spots.
