This week on the Everything Actioncast, Zach and Chris race to stop the Apocalypse with Arnold and discuss 1999's End of Days, which was just released on 4K.

Arnold plays the awesomely named Jericho Cane, a former cop turned alcoholic private security agent. After stopping an attack on a wealthy investment banker, Jericho and his partner Bobby Chicago (Kevin Pollack) start to investigate the shooter and find themselves in a religious battle between the church and Satan himself (Gabriel Byrne). If Satan can impregnate a specific woman, in this case Christine York (Robin Tunney), before midnight on December 31st, the gates of hell will open and the apocalypse will begin.  Jericho has to find and protect Christine while dodging Satanists and anyone that Satan has brainwashed into becoming his minions. Zach and Chris discuss how nu-metal was apparently the soundtrack of the apocalypse, Arnold's disgusting morning shake, the spectrum of Satan's powers, pitch a more fantastical final battle, and more.

You can watch End of Days on Prime Video. Next week, we're entering The Fog and discussing the 2005 remake of the John Carpenter movie as it turns 20.

'End of Days' Movie Overview

00:00:26
Speaker
And this week we're trying to stop the apocalypse with Arnold and talking about End of Days, the 1999 action horror movie um that just, this week we got a 4K release for the first time, so you can finally ah watch End of Days in all its

Anniversary Timing Issues

00:00:41
Speaker
high-def glory. Although, it's funny, like the 4K says the 25th anniversary, but that was like last year, so I'm not sure, I guess they're just like late to but putting it out, they're like, man, when you're late, it's fine.
00:00:55
Speaker
I mean, they just wanted to get before, like, get it out the door before, like, the new millennia. Because that was, like, everyone's goal.
00:01:04
Speaker
it's It's the 26th anniversary. It's actually

Timeline and Storyline Impact

00:01:07
Speaker
this year. Yeah, so it's like, I guess, ah it doesn't quite match up, but, I mean, they wanted a this is a secretly a Y2K year movie.
00:01:18
Speaker
Oh man, yeah, this yeah this is Y2K, Y2K is all over the place. It's a like New Year's Eve movie, if you want to add that to your list along with like Ghostbusters 2. Technically, it's like a like that flux of like Home Alone 3 and like that like between Christmas and New Year's. Because it starts on what, like December 28th is when it starts.
00:01:41
Speaker
And it goes into New Year's Eve. Yeah, yeah. like this This movie is like, the timeline is very strict, so everything that happens has to be within like that three-day span, which is

Arnold Schwarzenegger's Career Trajectory

00:01:53
Speaker
crazy. Because there's like like, if it had more time to flush it out,
00:01:58
Speaker
It could have been a little more like, I don't know, like we world building, like more encompassing with more side characters and conspiracy and and like twist. But because it's just this movie takes place over three days and it's just sort of like each scene just sort of reveals a little bit more and more until like basically by the third act, it just gets ridiculous.
00:02:18
Speaker
Mm hmm.
00:02:22
Speaker
And don't like Arnold this time, like he's coming off. ah I think the last one before this was racer. Right.
00:02:34
Speaker
right Yeah. It's like 1996. So he was making this around here. Yeah, just i

Arnold's Serious Roles and Performances

00:02:42
Speaker
I'm just trying to... Oh, Jingle the White was also, and then Batman and Robin. So, like, it was kind of like... Batman and Robin, obviously... it's kind like he was kind of like... He'd hit the peak of his, like, you know, first part of his career.
00:02:53
Speaker
I feel like he's kind of like... is like This is, like, the downswing. Like, um like i I think we both were a lot Eraser. It's probably, like, the most like last, like, pure Arnold action movie. Yeah. Where it's just like the everything you want from Marvel. Like one-liners, ridiculous action, him doing like like ridiculous feats, like holding two giant grail guns in one hand.
00:03:14
Speaker
You know what's crazy? He doesn't do that in this. I think that's what like you want a giant like six foot three, six foot four like muscle man to do. He does he does like...
00:03:27
Speaker
Not to downgrade like Bruce Willis, but it's more like everyday man stuff. like It's a lot of like acting drunk and then yeah yeah doing his job. Yeah, he had like this weird... there was ah this weird so like like It was like a two-movie thing, but it was kind this this trend he was doing. I just made my...
00:03:43
Speaker
maybe to be more serious or something, but, like, it was, like, this and collateral damage, where he's just, like, like, yo, super, like, I'm super depressed, suicidal, my family's dead, like, I don't want to, like, I don't, I'm roughly into this, but I'm, like, I'm an alcoholic, like.
00:03:58
Speaker
Oh, so much more collateral damage, like, he takes on Cuba because of that, or Colombia.

Influences and Reception of 'End of Days'

00:04:05
Speaker
but ah But yeah, this was the like, okay, let's just, it's the 101 depressed like look, um like character type.
00:04:15
Speaker
Well, he like he literally gets Max Payne. Like, yeah it's like, because he was a cop, he testified against the like the mob, and the mob came and killed his wife and his daughter. i think Max Payne came out like 98.
00:04:28
Speaker
definitely before this. Yeah. I'm sure that's little, I don't know if that was like an influence or not, but like this movie has like influences, like from like a bunch of different things. Like it's got little bit seven in there. It's got a little bit of like, well, a lot of like the omen or like, um, that kind of movie.
00:04:41
Speaker
Oh no, no. Max Payne came out after this. oh man, maybe they maybe they were like, we saw End of Days, and we're taking that plot line. You know what's crazy about End of Days?
00:04:53
Speaker
It's not like it was a commercial failure. I think it was just critically panned, but audience-wise, people like enjoyed it, because it was different to see people take on satan like Satanic things.
00:05:06
Speaker
um Even now, it's like I expect it so much worse from just like re-watching it. But like the story is coherent. It's not the best story. It's got a few flaws, like we're mentioning. But yeah, like it starts strong.
00:05:20
Speaker
But like, I think just the order of where you want where you experience it is like a little different. Like if they went with the whole like baby born, then the the house invasion, I think it would have been like you're like, OK, now I care about this guy.
00:05:38
Speaker
Or even do the crazy, like, lethal weapon ripoff where he does the helicopter thing and they're like, oh my god, this guy's like, you know. He's got Death Wish. Death Wish. And he's just sort of like, he's not even clipped in,

In-depth Scene and Character Analysis

00:05:51
Speaker
you know? but Go back to that helicopter scene where he just jumps out with like a rope in his hand. He's it's just holding it, not even like, not even secured. See? That's a feat of strength.
00:06:00
Speaker
That would be like, okay, I get that like he's like kind of unstable, but like, that was still pretty cool. um But yeah, it's it's definitely like a different era. Now that you mention it, that Arnold always played like either a commando, a loving father, or both.
00:06:23
Speaker
And then this is the time where he just isn't any of those things. Well, the sixth day kind throws things off a little bit because that's like in the middle of like collateral damage and end of days. But he was still a father and ah like ah a soldier in the sixth day.
00:06:38
Speaker
But he wasn't like a depressive alcoholic. That kind of ruined like this like run of him. I want to be a more serious. I'm going to be alcoholic, depressed. I want to like show my so acting range.
00:06:51
Speaker
Yeah. yeah We won't get that until like later.
00:06:58
Speaker
but I mean, he was still trying to figure it out. He was writing on what made him bankable for the longest time. and i don't know who suggested him to be like dark and grim. but it was basically the equivalent of dark and grim in 1999. Um, the only thing he's missing is like wearing cool ass sunglasses.
00:07:16
Speaker
I think he's, he's wearing sunglasses. Like when like that, like big opening action sequence in the car, isn't he? Yeah. where he's like, and then he jumps out and like jumps off the helicopter. Ah, but he should have kept it. Like it should have been like his look.
00:07:30
Speaker
Uh, but okay. So from, do you remember the original like time you saw this and thought it was like, it's going to be a different kind of movie.
00:07:41
Speaker
Um, I'm trying think. I mean, i guess, I guess maybe just expecting to be like more of like a straight, like a straightforward, like Arnold action movie. Okay. Like more of like at his peak, but then can, it's like definitely a lot more weird. Like, uh, it's, it's definitely more investigation than you think it is. Like, it's more like like a, like a whodunit, kind of like whodunit or like a mystery. Yeah. So I, first time I saw this movie, I think, uh, I was thinking like they were like, like,
00:08:10
Speaker
demon hunters or something. mean I thought that was, like, the job that Schwarzenegger and Kevin Pollack were, like, on, was to basically, like, handle more of this, like, mythos of this world of just, like, I guess, just, like, the battle of good and evil.
00:08:28
Speaker
like Like, yeah, like like like, they're aware of, like, everything, like, they know about everything, they know about, like, Satan and demons and all that stuff. Yeah, and they didn't know that they were the, just happened to be the the chosen protectors.
00:08:39
Speaker
ah but because like you know mean like it also gives them like more of a grounded like sense where these are just people who are just trying to get by and they're not trying to like prevent an apocalypse but they ended up doing that but even and but the movie like they don't acknowledge that like even at maybe at the end where arnold realizes what's at stake but even then it's like in over the three days, Arnold's just like, I curse you, God.
00:09:08
Speaker
He's just, you he meets Satan. He legit meets Satan. He's like, oh. You know, and it's, ah and where's God during this? Is God, is you know, like, it's it's like, there's that point where it's like, no, no, no, like, you help yourself.
00:09:23
Speaker
Don't worry about sending an envoy from God. If anything, and all the envoys that God sent are just like Black Ops priests. Don't communicate to anyone what's going on. You gotta have faith. That's what everyone keeps saying.
00:09:37
Speaker
Faith that we'll like solve it ourselves. I know. ah But it's like... I get it. It's like against the odds. It's definitely like more of a like a symbolism to it.
00:09:49
Speaker
But you can't like, you can't basically start with the opening of like Blade, you know? And then and just be like, you know, now God's involved. It's like, if you said that maybe Schwarzenegger is like on the side for being like a security ah and enforcer or like a guard, he also dabbles in some like demon hunting or is aware of it. And then that's what gives him a little bit of an edge for this, this like problem.
00:10:17
Speaker
Well, he and Kevin Pollack basically worked for like... ah I mean, it's it's striker security that has, like, apparently, like, unre unrestrained access to new York City. They can just, like, fly a helicopter and land on the street.
00:10:30
Speaker
Oh, it's like a paramilitary. they have They're basically... lc you not yeah They are PMC. You're not... I mean, you're not a allowed to fly helicopter that below. Like, anything, I think, under, like, four stories is, like, that's a it's an FDAA, like, violation in New York.
00:10:45
Speaker
And mind you the time, like, in 1999, that, like, that was still pretty, like, you know, eh. We're still a few years off from like a whole new round of regulations about air travel. ah yeah no I saw that scene.

Casting Choices and Character Names

00:11:01
Speaker
It is insane how this like company also hired Arnon and Kevin Paul. like what What was the hiring like? like One guy is just like ah like an obvious depressed man.
00:11:14
Speaker
It's like, why do you want to join Striker? It's like, um look i'm just I'm looking for the most dangerous work you give me. Just to give me that the dangerous job. I have nothing to live for. It's like, all alright, you're hired.
00:11:26
Speaker
Yeah, that's totally what we want on our security team. And then, is Kevin Pollack just like the funny man? like Was Kevin Pollack also a cop? I don't know. I don't know if they were partners at one point, and then they both joined the Edgewater, but... Like, Jericho Cain was a cop, and then he the obviously obviously he he like quit or got kicked out the force because he was like a a wreck.
00:11:50
Speaker
and then But then, seems like Kevin Pollock has always been a flight of a striker, and then he's like, oh, here's your partner, Jericho Cain. know what's crazy? It's like, if you look up the credit for Kevin Pollock's name, his name is like Bobby Chicago. Yep.
00:12:04
Speaker
So, like, it's even more... You know i mean Like, it gets more, like, what's up with the security team where they're like, alright, Jericho Cain, cop on, you know, ah like, a hardball cop, like, now with, like, a manic episode.
00:12:17
Speaker
And how about we team up with Bobby Chicago, like, the funniest guy from Chicago. Who's wearing, like, a Jets hat. He's like, he has nothing about this that Chicago. i think I don't know if Chicago's like a last common name.
00:12:30
Speaker
don't know, but... Yeah, i didn't I don't think they even say his full name in the movie, do they? It's one of those things where I just had to remember, like, oh, his name is Bobby Chicago, and it's like, it doesn't play into anything big.
00:12:42
Speaker
Yeah. Is Jeremy Kane, like, Arnold's best character name? It's gotta be at least, it's gotta be, like, top three, right? I mean, if you're gonna do a, like, a thing with religion in it, strong name that's like jericho kane those are like two very biblical names obviously like yeah like solomon kane who's like you know classic like pulp like demon fighting hero and even kane itself is like a very classic uh like villain archetype if you read more bible stuff or even seen like command and conquer guy named kane uh
00:13:20
Speaker
Again, strong starting. ah Did you look up that initially they wanted Tom Cruise to be Jericho Cain?
00:13:28
Speaker
This would crazy with Tom Cruise in it.
00:13:31
Speaker
Why am running?
00:13:35
Speaker
i think if that would happen. yeah It wouldn't be such a convenient like every place Arnold ends up, like he doesn't travel there far. like It's not by foot. you know It might be a few dashes around a place, but he doesn't run like a city block.
00:13:50
Speaker
trying to think. what What was... Oh, yeah, because Tom Cruise did Magnolia instead, which is probably which part was probably the better choice. its I think he won an award for Magnolia. He was nominated for, like, like a... He won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar.
00:14:03
Speaker
So, that' that's probably the better choice, yeah.
00:14:08
Speaker
Then, ah I mean, Arnold doesn't do a bad job in this. Like, you really have to, like... It's a deep-cut Arnold movie because it's... um it's ah it Like i said, we all mentioned, like it's not his top standout role that basically lets him just do feats of strength for us.
00:14:26
Speaker
Or it's like his acting chops is him cursing God and then like and don't know I really want him to do like an like some sort of alternate take on like the Krum thing from Conan.
00:14:38
Speaker
Ooh, that would have been great. Toward the end, when he's like in the church, he's like kind of getting his faith back, where they just having prayed. like, God, I never prayed to before. and I didn't have a tongue forward.
00:14:51
Speaker
To hell with you! I'm gonna help you now that I come through. Like, yeah. That'd be fine. Like, lean into the fact that you Arnold in this movie. I think that is where I'm like, damn it. Every scene, I'm like, come on. Is it just... Is it he's he gonna bring out something? Is he gonna... He's only like it he's got he's that one, like, really classic one-liner, which is like, you're a fucking quiet boy compared to me!
00:15:15
Speaker
Yes. I think that's because, like, the internet made it more famous than remembered, and, like... just Just having him yell at the devil is pretty hilarious. Also, can we go back and say that like Gabriel O'Brien really puts on like the best Al Pacino.
00:15:31
Speaker
help you Yeah, when was the Devil's Advocate come out? like Was that like... In 96?

Satan's Character and Inconsistencies

00:15:37
Speaker
this Yeah, like shortly before this, they were like, yeah, just do that. saw that? that's the That's the devil. The sexy, sleek devil.
00:15:48
Speaker
Which, yeah, like yeah like so, like, Satan shows up, like, bursts out of hell, and he and he's, like, a predator, like, a flying predator, because he's just, like, invisible. like and then got it oh it's like you're already stated why are you like now a ghost demon yeah and then yeah takes over the body of an investment banker who we we have no we' i don't even this think says like a word before it gets like taken over by Satan and we have no like history of like who this was or why it was so like why have all the people in New York like it's like this investment banker guy I
00:16:22
Speaker
i don't know it's not like he had a mark Well, think we were talking before we started, like, I think there's, there's like one like throwaway line like Rod Steiger, who's like the, like the main like priest that Arnold works with later on, who's like, oh, he was chosen like along, along with like the baby that was chosen to be like his like bride or whatever. Like the he chose, somehow they like predicted that this guy was going to be like the the host of Satan.
00:16:49
Speaker
But, okay, so they knew that, and then they didn't act on that. I get the girl. I guess but that's the thing. They all have to wait until they become corrupt, then they can act... Yeah, like, if yeah if you know Gabriel Byrne, this investment-making guy, is gonna be, like, Satan's gonna come back and like, take over his body and almost cause the apocalypse.
00:17:06
Speaker
Like, just, yeah, like, kill him. Like, don't try to, send your, like, send your crazy black ops Vatican Knights to kill him, not, like, Robin Tunney. Well, cause, like, Satan can't possess, I guess Satan can only possess men?
00:17:18
Speaker
Or he only likes to possess men? Yeah. the The rules of his powers are never really, likelas like, explained, cause he just, he kinda just does whatever he wants, whatever he wants.
00:17:29
Speaker
He can just brainwash people and make them zombies, but then also sometimes he sees their sins and that makes them go to him. Or he tries to make deals with them and if you make a deal with him, then he takes over you. But then he can also whisper and distract people.
00:17:52
Speaker
and causes random explosions. I'm guessing... Yeah, the random explosions is a lot. Like... it His power thing is supposed to be just like inconsistent because he like can't predict what his next move is.
00:18:03
Speaker
But he doesn't stick to like something that works conventionally. like He keeps changing the tactic. So of the time like Arnold's fighting him, it's like it could be anything as a counter, right?
00:18:16
Speaker
It's not like... If Arnold met him the first time, threw him out a window... I think that's where they were like really the we get to experience each other and like be like physical. Also around each other.
00:18:28
Speaker
So, like, his human body is still human, right? Satan's human body is still vulnerable? Well, it's weird because Arnold, at one one point, like, when when they have their they're big, like ah like, heat moment in Arnold's apartment, where, like, he's trying to, like, seduce him, like, I'll give you your wife and daughter back.
00:18:44
Speaker
You can have Christmas again. Arnold, like, shoots him twice, and then but you see, like, the bolt the bullets, like, Wolverine themselves back to, like, healed. But then, I guess if he caused enough damage at the same time, then that so that damages him? Because like later on, Arnold's just like blasting him with machine gun.
00:18:59
Speaker
and that's like yeah i um So it's not totally invincible. It's just that if um you let Satan stand there for a while, you can like tack it on.
00:19:10
Speaker
And he does walk away from like flying out of a window and landing in a car. So I guess that doesn't really do much to him. i guess ah Well, you mentioned like all at once. Or none at all.
00:19:22
Speaker
ah It's a multiplier. Or like explosions seem to be... Really, like, he causes explosions, but explosions are like his weakness because Arnold pulls out grenade launcher in the finale. yeah. it's just like black-stated grenades.
00:19:35
Speaker
Now that you mention that, because like, Satan walked through a wall of fire. He's walking, yeah. Like, he's like the T-1000. He just walked through fire and and causing like causing

Thematic Elements: Faith and Evil Forces

00:19:45
Speaker
explosions around him. And then like, if he gets like a grenade in the dome, then he's like, yeah, it's like, oh, no, shit. i get My body's all blown up now.
00:19:55
Speaker
So is it just the grenade was more damaging? Was that blessed? or You know yeah this like all you think that Arnold would have to get like blessed weapons. That would been great if like Rod Steiger had like ah like to say a cashier like, here's holding weapons that you can use. or like dip your guns in holding water.
00:20:16
Speaker
Because Arnold just goes to Stryker and is I'm taking all these guns. And his boss is just like, all alright.
00:20:26
Speaker
um I like that idea better. Like, that's such a better, like, explanation to say, okay, yeah, like, your weapons did, like, this much damage, but if you're, like, we increase it to match somewhat, like, to power up so that the final act is more like, oh, you're smarter than where you started.
00:20:45
Speaker
Yeah, he he can't be killed by conventional weapons. You need, like, these special holy relic weapons to stop him. mean, even the craziest thing is like, this is just my own personal thing.
00:20:56
Speaker
Bring back that protein shake. Bring back that like garbage breakfast. Oh my God. Yeah. He goes, Oh, I know a recipe. It just like mixes like a bunch of things.
00:21:08
Speaker
Well, yeah. But like, it was like leftover Chinese food, a pizza that was like on the floor. He stepped on li beer, beer, bismol. Yup.
00:21:19
Speaker
I think I'm missing one more ingredient, but like it was gross looking. Yep. And the fun thing is like that's our hero. That's our like introduction. so That's how you do it. I also feel like that was stolen from Lethal Weapon.
00:21:33
Speaker
There's a scene in Lethal Weapon 1 or 2 where Riggs makes some vodka drink. you remember this? Yeah.
00:21:44
Speaker
ah Yeah, I think you remember, like, yeah, it made me just making some weird, like, concoction. Was it for, like, a hangover, maybe, or something? Yeah. It was just, like, more booze, which, I guess.
00:21:55
Speaker
I mean, yeah. Hair the dog, yeah. Hair the dog thing.
00:22:04
Speaker
But that's that's how you know he's, like, you know, doesn't give a shit about anything. He'll drink, like, this sludge. He's like, alright, I'm ready for work. I'm gonna jump out helicopter.
00:22:18
Speaker
So, uh... Like, it's got, like, um... It's got potential. Like, I think we mentioned, like, how much inspiration this movie already does with, like, showing so much of like, the dynamic, like... Look how sad Arnold is.
00:22:35
Speaker
And then look how, like, crazy Satan is. And then we get to, like, the actual girl, uh... Rubbin' Tummy. Rubbin' Tummy. Who's just, like, a confused 20-year-old during this whole thing.
00:22:50
Speaker
I like that her her world unravels in, like, one night. It's, like, that mom is just, like, trying to, like, do some stuff. She finds out Satan is real. Like, the man in her vision's here.
00:23:02
Speaker
Like, Vatican special ops guys came in trying like, give her the last rites and kill her. yeah. Which, uh, would that have, that would have worked, right? Like,
00:23:14
Speaker
i mean that but what's the yeah there was I mean, if you she's like the only one that can, like, if Gilbert can have sex with, to like, birth the end of Christ and like open hell or whatever. So if she's dead, plan's over.
00:23:26
Speaker
you know, for a black ops thing, they really wait until the last moment. Yeah, there's a whole there's a whole weird thing where like, so like in 1979 they kind like hold open when if you see like ah Christine being born and they like, you know, Marker was forsaken with like the snake blood and everything.
00:23:47
Speaker
Like the Vatican's like, oh, we gotta fight the the girls but the girl's like she was born this night but they don't know who it is. But then they they don't find out for like 20 years and then it's like, and they find out like the light like the last like three days before they can stop anything. Okay, but like The Vatican found out, didn't find out for like 20 years, but the Satanists were like

Plot Loopholes and Narrative Opportunities

00:24:07
Speaker
on the ball. They knew exactly where and when and then had like a great plan.
00:24:13
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. they yeah because they they Yeah, because they were they they were there when she was bored. So yeah, they were like right on, ready for it. Like, yep, here's the girl that we're going to use. So they must have been monitoring like every like hospital. Yeah.
00:24:29
Speaker
That's a lot And like yeah like and now like how many babies were born that night? Like, like you know, December 28th, 1979. I'm sure there's like a lot around the world.
00:24:41
Speaker
Yeah, it's the thing. i was like It just ended up being in America, but the odds of you being at that hospital at the right time with your crew of other Satanists and that snake, you needed to bring in a live snake.
00:24:56
Speaker
Yeah, like like, it's like half the hospital are Satanists. Oh. Because there's like a whole crew down there. It's like the nurse and Udo Kier and like ah like a bunch of just like orderlies and like janitors are just down there hanging out in the morgue of doing this like ritual in.
00:25:15
Speaker
Also, not to spell much, but does that mean CC Pounder was a Satanist then? That's what I'm trying to figure out about Satan's powers. Because it's like, did he did he make a deal with her? Or did he just like, you know, can he just like mind wipe people and make them zombie soldiers? Yeah.
00:25:33
Speaker
Or it's like maybe she was um part of that like house invasion. if you I guess it's like if you have some sort of like darkness in you, then he can like take you over because it's like he's like manipulating your soul or something maybe.
00:25:48
Speaker
Maybe. you know but then it But then it's like Bobby Chicago but he gets Satan pisses his explosive piss and blows up his van. um same he makes a deal with him.
00:26:00
Speaker
i guess maybe he pulls him out of hell or just like before he like dies from like the like being built in flames. like He makes a deal with him to like, oh, I'll put up the flames and you'll live and you'll serve me now.
00:26:11
Speaker
Maybe. But then he also just has like a horde of just like random like homeless people and it's like an army of zombies that'll just attack Arnold. No, I think they're just Satanists. They were part of the Satanist cult that came for the sign.
00:26:28
Speaker
Which again, it's stealing from the Omen. ah The Omen, know yeah. the People were just like ready for this. Because there's also that guy on subway, like they like the albino But he was a vision.
00:26:40
Speaker
He wasn't real. Well, I think he was it's weird because he was on the street and then he sees Satan and then he just kind of was like, oh, man, Satan's talking to me. He's here. And then like the kind of plot that he like just Satan's like like presence like made him into like a you know ah messenger for Satan.
00:27:01
Speaker
Or Satan's like manipulated him or something. But then, yeah, but then it's weird because like he just like turns into like porcelain and but on the subway.
00:27:10
Speaker
which is that Was that real, or was that just ah like a Christine vision? because no one else I guess it was a vision, because no one noticed that. I saw that, right. Same thing with like the weird like the her weird like sex vision.
00:27:25
Speaker
Well, that's not a good thing. but it's like Part of that's real, because Satan shows up at Udo Kyr's house, and so and it's like, oh, your wife and daughter. It's interesting. Interesting.
00:27:36
Speaker
but But then it's like they're like warfing together into one thing and then Christine has a vision of that. But then it's not really anything to like... it it's it's like save it seems like he's just doing that because he's Satan. He's just like, yeah, I like to bang chicks. I'm Satan.
00:27:54
Speaker
But then you would think it would have some sort like psychic link. to that like It's like part of his like plan to find her. I need to like get into the state to like find her and link to like her mind or something.
00:28:07
Speaker
but But he still doesn't know where she is. Yeah, yeah. It's just more like, I'll send you this message. don't know where it goes. Hopefully you'll get it. And I feel like Christine's been having that same kind of vision or similar visions to that for her entire life.
00:28:21
Speaker
um Just like Gabriel Byrd and just sex with her. God. Which, yeah, that's a very sense. Do you think Limp Bizkit was playing the entire time, too? I mean... Like Every Dream is Limp Bizkit? Every Dream was a Limp Bizkit album.
00:28:35
Speaker
Played in her head. And I guess why that's why she had pills and the psychiatry to help her. Yeah, that's the one thing learn about from this movie, is that the the soundtrack of the apocalypse is Nu Metal.
00:28:49
Speaker
Super new. super ah like I think Nu Metal was just invented in 98, so it's only been a year. This is the year of Woodstock 99, too. That was the peak Nu Metal. Yeah.
00:29:03
Speaker
like Was like 99 was like pretty much all just like new metal insanity.
00:29:09
Speaker
But I think like Korn's also on the end of the day soundtrack. There's not a couple other bands. But it also has like a ah very like knockoff omen like like score theme.
00:29:21
Speaker
Versus like you know like ah like a Latin kind of like sounding like orchestral song is like his main theme.
00:29:29
Speaker
So it's like it's kind of confused soundtrack.
00:29:37
Speaker
ah I also wish during that sex scene, kind of wish he could have like Udo Kier just sitting in a chair and just be like, alright. but and It's really nice for you to come to my house and hang out, but this is too much.
00:29:55
Speaker
Yeah, it's funny because even when Satan comes back, like when he's first scene where he comes back to that restaurant and makes out with that person's wife, Yeah, just, like, rips your breast out, just, like, cramming it, and, like, looks at the guy, just, like, i guess and it's, like, back off, man.
00:30:12
Speaker
Satan. Uh, I guess it's because, like, Satan has a thing for, like, cock-holding? Maybe, yeah. is that Is that, like, a sin? i mean i guess it's, like, lust, you it's, like, part of his, like, his, like, deadly sins.
00:30:26
Speaker
You can't cover someone's wife, but it's, like, he passes, it's like, alright, hey, you dating anyone? Okay, cool, this works, then. This is one of my sins I can do.
00:30:35
Speaker
But then he doesn't, but then, like, like kind of just, like, it's, like, randomly, like, like, pulling pranks on people. Like, he's, like, that that kid that, like, shows up, like, gets him the skateboard. And then, like, it's, like, oh, hey, cool shirt. Because he's wearing shirt like, Satan rules on it.
00:30:47
Speaker
But then he acts, like, a jerk to Satan, and Satan's just, like, he does, like, his whisper, like, hey, kid. And then he gets hit by bus. Oh, yeah.
00:30:55
Speaker
I mean, it's just, like, an insert just to kind of show you that Satan really is just, like, maniac. Yeah. But I kind of wish they either did that part really early and stayed with it, or like, went back to Arnold and has to deal with like maybe like Satanists that were hit and dies to come and mess with them.
00:31:16
Speaker
So it makes it more paranormal. You know, maybe like lower Arnold morality, or his sanity. sanity
00:31:29
Speaker
Yeah, or like or like more random things happening around. Yeah, like unexplained things. um ah We mentioned that Gabriel was like in Stigmata, which in that movie is like Satan and things happening to the victim of Gang Stigmata.
00:31:49
Speaker
And then you get a of cool... different... ah like all all these like different I guess, like things happening to the victim. But Arnold, like, doesn't have that. Like, there's should have been a balance between, like, Robin, Turney getting, like, the visions and then at Arnold getting something. And then it's sort of, like, destined.
00:32:08
Speaker
You know, like, there's a weird, the weird scene where, like, they both see the weird, like, apple vision. Like, there's, like, she opens in the apple and it's, like, it looks like bodies inside of it. Or maggots or whatever it is.
00:32:19
Speaker
And then i was like, I saw that too. But then it's like, they never go back to that again. Like, Arnold have anymore visions. You're right.
00:32:28
Speaker
yeahs Something like that. Something where it's a little even, where it's not just him. Or it's not just her. It's like, okay, because now... Well, I mean, maybe Cassiden can then increase his power to be like, alright, you get trippy visions too, but only this.
00:32:42
Speaker
Our need is to be like, y'all are in the mummy too. like it's like or like, Rick is like the descendant of like the protector of like the royal family or whatever. like They need they is some sort of prophecy like, oh, and then this girl will be born under the eye of God, and she'll bring Satan, the Antichrist, into the world, but she has protect
00:33:07
Speaker
Just, like, so something, like, more to, like, tie our world into it, because, yeah, it's, like, they have, it's the one scene they have the visions together, and then it's just, like, but it's not really anything, he's not, like, he doesn't realize any powers, or like, he doesn't have anything special about him. just like It's just, like, one random scene.
00:33:23
Speaker
Yeah, it's just a mention, and that's it. There's no, um... Like, oh, you're blessed. And it's like, okay, what do I get? It's like, nothing. You're just Arnold.
00:33:34
Speaker
She'd be like, secretly, he's like ah like an angel or something, and he just has like, he's like, never realized his potential. Or he's like, reading his faith, and he's like, he has like, angelic powers.
00:33:45
Speaker
No, I see, they tried that in Van Helsing, which didn't work, so, like, that's why you don't see that. Mm-hmm. Because wouldn't make sense for him to have like the kid and all that, or it's like maybe that's like an implanted false memory, but that's too clever for

Mythology and Character Motivations

00:33:59
Speaker
this movie.
00:33:59
Speaker
Yeah.
00:34:06
Speaker
yeah did pipe Could had a little bit more tied into like like something with like ah Yeah, there's like a prophecy there's like there's like a part of the prophecy was there was a protector that will like like help stop Satan or something.
00:34:24
Speaker
And just one? And the church was like, alright, good luck. like Maybe they should be scouting, maybe they should have people at major cities. You know, just that the church drops the ball on this one. Yeah. Yeah.
00:34:38
Speaker
yeah
00:34:43
Speaker
Well, they always give up because like, um like the Pope, Mark Margolis from Breaking Bad is like, he's like, we to protect, we got to protect the girl who to protect the innocent. But then like, you got this, this like the Vatican Knights are just like, well, we can't just don't want to stop saying we got killed. We got killed the girl. That's killer.
00:35:06
Speaker
but they all they all They all get, like, murked, like, within, like, five minutes of... So the saint shows up in the church just, like, kills all of them. Yeah. Which is, um... Like, again, poor planning on their part.
00:35:19
Speaker
I like how, basically, the... the non-powered priest gets to hang out more, Rob Stinger, because he just... I guess he's not part of the official clan, so the Saiyan doesn't care. He's like, whatever. He just knocks him away, and then you're like, is he dead? But then he comes back out when Arnold gets crucified in the alleyway and gets down.
00:35:43
Speaker
And then just like, oh, hey, yeah, like... ah you got like an app You got three hours left to go but say it stop the Satan from doing what he was going to do with the girl.
00:35:55
Speaker
like Just ah go there and do your best. We're not going to help you. Bye. We can't help you, Arnold. We're just but humble freeze. Yeah, because they have no idea where anyone is, where St. took Christine. and But luckily, like because Arnold called Possessed Bobby, and he's using a striker car, the striker car has GPS in it, so that's like the only reason Arnold has the idea of where to go.
00:36:22
Speaker
oh
00:36:25
Speaker
because That's why he goes back to Striker HQ because he's like he gets he loads up on his guns and he also like looks up the location of the car and that finds out it's at the abandoned theater they're using as like the Satan cult temple. Yeah, that that temple was like that is ripped out of a Blade set piece. Yeah.
00:36:48
Speaker
But it's not even like the theater. it's like It's like the subway station under the theater, like a subway track under the theater.
00:36:56
Speaker
I mean, that that happens. It's like New York builds on top of old New York. So makes sense that this ancient theater exists in New York, um especially when they had like a thousand years to wait for Satan's return.
00:37:08
Speaker
hmm.
00:37:14
Speaker
but i yeah But I guess you can like you can just like it could just happen anywhere because you know it is they go to the other church afterwards and then it's it's likes like could happen it's going to happen there, i guess, if Satan gets his way. But then they do this whole big ritual in the like Satanic Temple.
00:37:32
Speaker
I think the Satanic Temple is his preferred place. I think just be like, okay, doesn't really matter. He wants open a watch. Yeah, he just wants an audience.
00:37:43
Speaker
do we Have you mentioned that he has like one hour like achieve his goal and that's it? ah he has to specifically do like like um like it impregnate like Christine between 11pm and 12am on December 31st.
00:38:00
Speaker
Now here's the interesting part. What time zone were they basing that on? Arnold specifically says that. He's just like, oh yeah, what time zone? Yeah. Yeah, and it's like, the movie just goes, shut up.
00:38:14
Speaker
There's something, Rob Snyder just kind of comes on this whole thing like, well, you know, the Grecorian calendar, of when they made the, they weren't worried about like that kind of thing. They were like they were like going off this like time frame. So it's like, all right.
00:38:29
Speaker
That sounds made up, Rogg Snyder. You're in on the cold, aren't you? Yeah, that's straight up like Gremlins. like gremlins too like like like what if you What if you fly um to a different time zone and he it eats ah a piece of chicken in his teeth?
00:38:47
Speaker
Yeah, think that's dedicated to a time. and then it's like Unless it's set in that time. Unless a thousand years prior, Satan was in New York or whatever New York was.
00:39:00
Speaker
in 19... not even 19, it would be like 700. Yeah. also love like who like, you you know the number of beast is? like it's like, no,
00:39:15
Speaker
it's upside hours it's nine nine nine as in ninety ninety nine
00:39:22
Speaker
and is like one of those like tinfoil conspiracy
00:39:28
Speaker
It's like the number 23 or something. just like And if you add them all up and divide them by three, get 999. And it's like, no, you have to use this formula. It doesn't work unless you use this formula.
00:39:48
Speaker
I guess and you can try again in what, like 2099?
00:39:54
Speaker
No, it's every thousand years, not hundreds. Yeah, so he tried it in 1999, now he has to wait until, like, 2099?
00:40:05
Speaker
Yeah. I guess. And a Days 2. Yeah. like Like a weird, like, future, like a sci-fi version of it now? I would prefer that. Like, i would like another, like, step up, where it's like, alright, Satan's back, he possesses, like...
00:40:19
Speaker
some AI maker or whatever. like Oh my god. He possessed like go-bro. it's just It's just Terminator. It's just Terminator with like the Terminator world. But now Satan's running around.
00:40:30
Speaker
He possesses like cybernetic people and stuff. didn't watch that.
00:40:37
Speaker
Cyber Satan. Yeah. I mean, I'm trying to think. Was it like a Hellraiser where there's like... there' evan there's There's one where it was like the internet. Yeah. So, I mean, we could make, someone can make the end of days, like, just cyberpunk just randomly, and then it's like, okay, well, what powers this, like, core? It's like, or this powers this monster? it's like demon energy.
00:40:58
Speaker
I mean, you're just basically making... Yeah, just... Which I'm fine with. Like, this is this is funny if it, like, someone in the Doom universe was like, hey, you guys remember end of days? Like, you guys to make that part of the Doom lore?
00:41:13
Speaker
Yeah.
00:41:17
Speaker
And then the son of Arnold, actually, no, whatever, like, descendant of Arnold, it's just, that's the Doomslayer. Mm-hmm.
00:41:26
Speaker
Rip it's hair.
00:41:35
Speaker
But yeah, I guess, I guess, um like, the big the big finale, um we talked about that, like, the ah the sub like the whole, like, subway thing, where it's, like, the big fight subway,
00:41:48
Speaker
the ripoff of Terminator. Speed? Speed, yeah. Or but kind of Mission Impossible, too. Like, the first Mission Impossible, it was like ah like a subway fight. Yeah, but it wasn't like in a, like the heroes are trying to avoid getting slashed or pulled from the windows.
00:42:06
Speaker
Mm-hmm. That, I feel like, feel like there's another move that's like that.
00:42:15
Speaker
Well, there's a lot where it's just like, you know, the thing is on the outside of the car and you're like, you're like, don't know where it's going to come from. and then they burst through like the ceiling or burst through the floor.

Final Battle and Climax Analysis

00:42:23
Speaker
this Because Satan's basically basic say like, they run over Satan in the subway car, then he's like under it.
00:42:27
Speaker
And like, he's like punching through the floor, trying to grab them. And then Arnold's just like shooting his machine gun at them. And then they do like, they like uncouple the cars and Arnold's like, it's like crazy, like jump, jumps on the subway car.
00:42:40
Speaker
And then they blow up Satan, but then the like the train is... Because they're in the car behind the one they blew up. And I don't know how I survived the crumpling of the like the the car, the subway car they're on.
00:42:53
Speaker
I guess because they're they're in the the very, very back of the car that doesn't get crumpled. But you see that car, the entire subway car is just crumpled into it like ah like a tiny soda can. I mean, New York in 1999 didn't have the best infrastructure.
00:43:08
Speaker
Mm-hmm. Except for that one cart that was stand the one like the back of the semi car is made from like the same stuff they made like a black box and an airplane out of.
00:43:22
Speaker
But then we like we mentioned before like that's we get the weird thing where like now Satan that like demolished Satan like somehow that like like like blew him up. He had like he had put his body back together so then he like leaves the Gabriel Burns body and like flies around as like the like a Invisible Predator again.
00:43:39
Speaker
Do you think that Gabriel Byrne's body then reverts back to the original personality and he just like wakes up? He's like, oh my god. but think I think he's just dead. i think like There's no way like it's like's that's the way that body can like be like alive after State leaves it.
00:43:55
Speaker
But wouldn't you expect him to be able to like like be able pull his body back together? like Of all this all the powers we've seen Satan do, like he can't like regenerate his body. Well, maybe it's like too limited now, now that it's all so crumpled that was faster for him to do the ghost form than it was to like drag the human form around.
00:44:17
Speaker
Maybe, yeah. Or maybe it was damaged in the crotch. so Maybe, yeah. like I would have liked Arnold to also mention that, where he's just like, what if I shoot him in the penis? And then it's just like, oh.
00:44:34
Speaker
RoboCop style. I mean, this is going to sound dark. Just get that guy of a vasectomy.
00:44:42
Speaker
Right? like Like at some point before 1989, just like... bunch of black-out priests break into that guy's place and give him a snip.
00:44:53
Speaker
Or just, sort just like like, find, like, a doctor... Like, when you go to, like, the doctor's office or something, like, ah for, like, ah some sort of, like, procedure, just, like, be like, also, the Pope wants it much to give him of a vasectomy. Yeah, it's the Pope. It's not like this was some, like, secret organization that's, like, no one has ever heard of. Like, if this was the way that they're trying portray the, like, Catholic Church or Christianity, that would be their one priority, is to, like, have a network of, like...
00:45:23
Speaker
followers that, like, hey, keep an eye on this guy that's been prophesied. And then, like, figure out when to deal with it. It's not like it happened that week.
00:45:35
Speaker
It's not like prophecy's coming true, everything's coming together. They had 20 years. And they they couldn't figure out any information until, like, look that like it three days before everything's gonna go down and like the world's gonna end.
00:45:51
Speaker
Plus, like, In that time frame, only one guy did his job really well, which is, like, the priest Thomas. Thomas Aquinas. And they did a terrible job at, like, helping him and, like, protecting him. And then... He had visions and he cut off his own tongue. We still can't figure out what that was going to play in. Yeah, because, like... to Like, you would want him to like ah like if
00:46:22
Speaker
think you think he'd want to like tell someone, like oh here this is who the Satan's looking for, like find her and protect her.
00:46:29
Speaker
but yeah yeah, he just cuts out his tongue and... like like But somehow Arl, because of his connection to everything, he could hear him say like the but but Bible verse. like ah like He waited for a thousand years, he's coming back now. Yeah, I don't know what the...
00:46:46
Speaker
But then but it's also because like so because like Satan goes to the hospital and, you know, crucifies him on the ceiling. But then Satan writes the like message on him. Yeah. He's like, hey, check it out.
00:46:57
Speaker
I'm going to come for this girl. and Yes. Satan knows who the girl is now, but then still but doesn't know where she is. Well, maybe he got it from Tommy. Oh, no. he't he He does know where it but then Udo Kier is just like... um Because because like the Vagonites show up and fuck everything up, and then they escape. And that's when he punches Udo Kier through the head. And he's like... Satan's plan did make sense. and There are very selective interference, but... I mean, guess I guess because like Satan relied on...
00:47:31
Speaker
his like visions to like weaken her and then eventually just be like time for copulation. Mm
00:47:43
Speaker
Yeah, because, like because like his like, Christine's, like, stepmother, who is also, like, the sadist nurse, which, I don't know, how how does that work? Like, youre your nurse this is just like, going to adopt you now. Well, no, the nurse was part of the plan.
00:47:57
Speaker
She had to probably off the mom at some point, and then, no, I think she was the, the like, home nurse. For some whatever reason, this hospital nurse woman, like, left.
00:48:09
Speaker
the hospital gig to try to get close to the family. Yeah. They somehow they hired her for something. And then the parents died and then she became like the guardian. Well, no, She, she married this dad.
00:48:20
Speaker
Oh yeah. That's her step-mom. She took a very long time her to like, yes, do this plan over the 20 years. And then yeah even then it's like, she had to be stepmother for a while because Udu Kier mentioned, um,
00:48:36
Speaker
that like her parents have died a long time ago now. So yeah, assuming that within like four years, maybe she moved up into some sort of like, what would be a murder mystery plot, right? Like just the stepmother comes in like starts off as like a hired person and then slowly becomes family and then slowly becomes guardian, you know, like that would have been red flags.
00:49:01
Speaker
Oh, and also, like, RIP to, like, they just the random, like, server guy that's in their house, too. Like, it's, like, it's like throat slit by the vacuum dyes. Maybe they threw him in on the thing?
00:49:12
Speaker
They just, like, slit slit through him in the bathtub. Yeah, but it could have been a Satanist. Like, I feel like that lady surrounded herself in Satanism. Yeah, probably, yeah. not Not exactly super his. It wasn't like they broke in next door and then, like, attacked someone there, like, not, has nothing to do with this.
00:49:35
Speaker
Wouldn't it be cool if the Vatican Knights were more like Black Ops? They were like splinter cells or something? just burst it with tactical gear? Yeah, they had stealth suits. They also have like co-names. and Again, we're making Blade 2.
00:49:50
Speaker
um Which I think Udo Kit was in that one, too. Yeah, I think so. No, he's the first one. Oh, I threw him into the second one, too, just because he feels like he belongs there.
00:50:02
Speaker
But yeah, no, I think they were trying to be more grounded, but then when they introduced like weird elements that like only make sense if you add a little bit more fantasy to it or like a different expectation.
00:50:19
Speaker
Yeah. Like, like, yeah, like, like, so like, here like telepathic hearing is one talk with his tongue and visions and sit in like manipulative people caus and causing visions
00:50:33
Speaker
And then also just like, you know, bursting on the ground like a giant demon at the end. Just, hey, we we waited to blow a lot of the budget to get to this scene. Which I think Stan Winston designed that creature, even even though it's not like it's not like a practical one, i think it's still like his his design. Yeah, it's not terrible.
00:50:51
Speaker
It's fine for 1990. Like, it's... If it was more of a claymation monster and then like...
00:51:00
Speaker
I guess more of a, like, Arnold like swinging a sword against it. Yeah, like if like, if he, instead like, impaling himself on the sword, if he, like, picked up that sword in the church and started using that, it's like a Conan or like, a fantasy movie where it's like, fighting, like, the giant, like, dragon demon at the end. Can you imagine at the end he screams, like, i believe.
00:51:18
Speaker
jumps at that monster with a flaming sword. just like i say like It tries to introduce so many like different concepts that like by the end, it's already all of it on the wall.
00:51:29
Speaker
You might as well up the factor and have you know Arnold be now like a holy warrior. Yes.
00:51:39
Speaker
like go like um Like the last Witch Hunter something where like he pours like holy water in the story and it bursts into flames. and it's like yeah You're seeing it already. You're just like imagining it. i mean My brain went there too. Because we've seen other examples of this.
00:51:53
Speaker
And... i kind of expected that. But I have to remember that this was like 1999. Where Arnold was like... Like ah and like we we mentioned. He wanted to be serious. He wanted to do a role that seems like we no one expected him to do.
00:52:08
Speaker
But then we're like... Eh, we kind of expect some of this. I think yeah i think i think I read... like This is the only movie where he's like a human character that dies.
00:52:20
Speaker
Because he's you know he's ah he gets destroyed as a Terminator. But this is like the only is ah is' only like human character that like dies at the of the movie. Really? Yeah.
00:52:36
Speaker
Which, ah yeah, is a crazy way to go. we're like the The statue the statue is like left this of i think it Archangel Michael is destroyed, but the sword's like sticking

Alternate Ending and Audience Reactions

00:52:45
Speaker
out. And then Arnold just like jumps on it.
00:52:47
Speaker
from like the cause he's when He gets himself to Satan, so Satan takes over his his body and wants to finish things with like using Arnold's body. But Arnold's able to fight it just enough to like jump on the sword and impale himself. And then this giant like eruption of fire comes out.
00:53:02
Speaker
Oh, he pukes fire. Yeah, hmm.
00:53:07
Speaker
And then you know then it's been it's midnight. ah So he can't do anything anymore. His plan has failed. So yes he gets sent back to hell. I guess to wait for another thousand years.
00:53:21
Speaker
He doesn't even say like, I'll be back or anything. It's just sort of like, the movie just ends too. Why did I always say go to hell? It's like, go to hell.
00:53:32
Speaker
Or he says like, This is the end of your days. Because they say end of days a lot in this movie. Surprisingly, yeah. like I think this is probably one the movies where they say the title of the movie like the most. So I would have liked it if he kind of had a one-liner or or just sort of like did an opposite of end of days where it's like, this is the beginning of the days now. we' like like I cast thee out, Satan!
00:54:00
Speaker
You know? No one does any of those like deeper chants. um They tried it, and it doesn't really work. You know, the, like, I command you, blah, blah, blah, and then Satan's just sort of like, whatever.
00:54:15
Speaker
that That was great. like One of the Vatican night guys tries to use the cross against Satan, and Satan just grabs it and impales in the head with it. I mean, it makes sense if it's like a lesser demon and that doesn't work, or, you know, it's Satan. it Yeah, yeah.
00:54:30
Speaker
You gotta have basically like a Pope there, I guess. We're going for like power levels, right? Like this movie is power levels where it's like, is the Pope the best like demon hunter or like... He seems pretty frail. Like he's like, he's like, just, just slightly more like, like but mobile than, uh, like Margot Ghost's character from Breaking Bad. Yeah.
00:54:58
Speaker
Like, he's like, yeah, we need faith. We need to have faith. I was, I was, I was like 80 in 1979. Now like nine, I'm like 109. Wait,
00:55:08
Speaker
but do we even see the Pope again? Yeah, it's the same Pope from 1979. like, this he's like super old in 1979. And then it's like 20 years later. So he's just like ancient. kind of like,
00:55:20
Speaker
i kind of like blacked out certain parts of this movie because it's so like inconsist in coincidental because it's not like arnold meets the pope and he's like i give you the charge you know i gave it to thomas and now i give it to you to like carry it on and then arnold's like i didn't want this you know like does it doesn't none of that happens yeah
00:55:45
Speaker
Yeah, I think the fact that like no one ages or like shows any side of like aging from 1979 makes it more confusing, too.

Final Thoughts and Next Episode Preview

00:55:52
Speaker
Because Udu-Kyu looks exactly the same.
00:56:01
Speaker
i i think they get the stepmom maybe to make her hair a little grayer or something. that's like She's the only one that shows any side of aging.
00:56:09
Speaker
It's like a very bare minimum. Yeah. We put like some flour in. get up Yeah, the old school, like, high school, like, play is like, so yeah, here, he's a little man now. so floer up I loved her, like, her fight with Arnold, but like, she has, like, somehow has, like, super strength.
00:56:31
Speaker
Oh, she's, like, on the same level. It's like Satan, yeah. She's, like, tossing Arnold around the room. Like, shoving a piano into him. So was she secretly like, does she have Satan powers or like, is she just really fit but doesn't look like? Yeah. Does the Satan like give like certain like followers like power? Say, I give you super strength.
00:57:00
Speaker
Believe in me, you could like do cool shit.
00:57:04
Speaker
And I'll just like slant her to like a glass table.
00:57:10
Speaker
I like that like the daughter still has like, I didn't know this was going to happen. like you know And then i got to watch my stepmom fight my protector. Yeah, she she Christine gets over it pretty fast. Wait, it's my stepmom. No, wait, what? And then Earl's just get out of here! And then she's like, alright.
00:57:32
Speaker
and would you Maybe it's like, at that point, you can't you can't like, uh, argue. You just have to like, survive. Yeah. It's, it's not like a moment where she doubts herself or anything. She's like, oh God, like, why is this happening?
00:57:50
Speaker
Or, or like, well, right. So you're explaining everything. He's just like, oh yeah, that makes complete sense to me. ill like i believe this is my entire life. I'm staying here.
00:58:02
Speaker
yeah like, oh, this is cool. I want to join this cult. I'll exchange one cult for another cult. ye
00:58:15
Speaker
Yep. She's sort of like the like the Sarah Connor, John Connor, if you want to turn it into parallels. Cassane is obviously like he kind of like acts like the T-1000 or something.
00:58:28
Speaker
Arl is really like Kyle Reese because he's just ah a dude.
00:58:35
Speaker
I mean, Gary's always just the dude. Yeah.
00:58:41
Speaker
But, step you know, Stavart will be like a unstoppable killing machine. He's a a mortal man. Again, they grounded it.
00:58:53
Speaker
I just wish it was a little more fantasy. Especially at the end where, like, they just like had some holy weapons or or, like, a little bit of...
00:59:05
Speaker
I don't know, holy powers? Yeah, that would like definitely take it to the next level. that you have just for like If after he got like crucified, like something like Arnold, that was like... He gets powered up or something. It's like you survived this like hor horrific ordeal, now you're ready to fight Satan.
00:59:28
Speaker
And here's some, like... And Rath Steger opens his weapons closet full of like <unk>s like ancient maces and like like ah crossbows. like like like brisling Basically, like the like the Van Helsing arsenal.
00:59:41
Speaker
but just like Here's all this holy weaponry that we've developed.
00:59:50
Speaker
It's like the grenade unleashes like ah a giant like heavenly blast of light. I mean, yeah, that that would have gotten a little too ridiculous, but I need to do all that.
01:00:01
Speaker
I get what you mean.
01:00:04
Speaker
i do I do like the idea of like him like using that sword, though. like like Instead of impaling himself on it, it was like an old-school knight battle where he's just like, now I have a sword and shield, Satan.
01:00:14
Speaker
It was like fire-breathing demon. Yep. See? Totally, like, just suspend belief. Like, even the fight.
01:00:24
Speaker
now it's the But the church was just like, at that point, they didn't bother with like a second Black Ops team. They're like, they basically just gave up. They're like, well, we lost. We're just gonna hunker down and like, whatever happens, happens, I guess.
01:00:38
Speaker
I mean, maybe their backup plan was to wait until that baby was a certain age and then go after it.
01:00:51
Speaker
Did you read there was like there was a... They had an alternate ending where like Jericho survived. What? they They shot an alternate ending where lived and and it's just like... ah um the because yeah or like He like revive arrives after impaling himself and then and Christine like walk out of the church together and it's like the audience was like, no, that's stupid.
01:01:15
Speaker
Yeah, I kind of like that they did this ending. I didn't like it as a kid because, you know, you don't want to see your heroes be killed. But this was like symbolic. And, you know, it got to a level where like, you know, like he found peace.
01:01:31
Speaker
So that that was like nice. I see that now as an adult, you know, as a kid, I'm like, oh, oh, I guess they use that. that That's the ending, in like the novelization of the movie. So if you if read the the book of End of Days, it's it's that ending.
01:01:52
Speaker
Which is, it's what it's one of the weird, it's always like the weird quirks of like the novelizations. They always have deleted scenes where they're going off like a first draft. its so it's like It's like, oh, this kind of is like the movie. but But there's like a lot of weird like stuff that didn't happen.
01:02:07
Speaker
Yeah, I'm fine with the version we got. It totally like flows and it's like, Well, one, it didn't seem like Arnold did anything that he needed, like, super redemption for. Like, he... He just didn't get revenge for his family.
01:02:26
Speaker
Well, there wasn't... I mean, that but it's not like... It's not like Satan, like, like like brought, like, the the mob guys that, like, killed his family into, like, his army or something. See, that would have been cool. It's like, oh, like...
01:02:38
Speaker
Satan offers that and then Arnold turns it down besides trying to resurrect his family Satan was like oh like you're you're like the the people who tortured your life like my followers yeah yeah see show but he should have went around to like just like gathering and just like you know like criminals just like showing up likere like gang hideouts be like hey I'm saying you work for me now
01:03:03
Speaker
yeah guys you guys all have like dark souls I can see them hmm
01:03:10
Speaker
Offer them just like a bunch of gold or something. and but it's like it's that It's not real.
01:03:17
Speaker
Yeah. It's like the pursuit. If you choose the small things. Like the vanity things. It fights you back. But. The choice was obvious for Arnold. Because he just was like.
01:03:32
Speaker
I'm going to do the right thing now. Even though. It didn't seem like it was wandering. It didn't have like. Oh no I wish I could do this or whatever.
01:03:44
Speaker
but guess the I guess he's he's kind of like regaining his faith the entire time. That's true. he He does give up drinking, like, booze, alcohol, milkshakes.
01:03:56
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, he's still, like, so so like so so drinking, like, straight vodka. He's, like, pounding vodka, even, like, when Satan shows up his house, but... Yeah, but that's during his downtime.
01:04:07
Speaker
Yeah. Ever since then, then he's like, alright, I give up the alcohols like it fights in. Yeah, I need to clean up a little bit for the for this final battle with the ultimate evil.
01:04:22
Speaker
but yeah, I still ah enjoy it in the days. it's I think Eraser is probably the last like pure Arnold action movie of this like kind of like his first arc of his career.
01:04:35
Speaker
But yeah know this one's got one or solid one-liners. It's got some cool action sequences. It's cool that Arnold's only kind of straight-up horror action movie because he's fighting a Predator and Predator, that's kind of like a horror monster, but that's just pure action.
01:04:57
Speaker
Terminator is kind of like a slasher movie a little bit but not but it's not like a horror movie. This is like Arnold fighting Satan and demonic followers and Satanists and getting into like grimy areas of New York. it is it's definitely it's that I would say this is like last movie before it really went downhill for collateral damage in Sixth Day.
01:05:20
Speaker
i agree.
01:05:23
Speaker
But any final thoughts?
01:05:28
Speaker
No, I say you know check check it out if you haven't seen it in a while. It's it's still you know pretty solid. And you can check out that 4K or I think it's on Amazon Prime if you want to check it out there. um
01:05:40
Speaker
And yes I think they'll do it this week. Come back next week, we're to be heading into the fog, but not original John Carpenter one, the 2005 remake one because that celebrates its 20th anniversary ah next week. so one of One of the many, many mid-2000s horror remakes.
01:06:01
Speaker
There's a whole wave of them.
01:06:05
Speaker
Yep. Can't wait for that. Yeah. And ahead of us, we've got all of news out there. We've got news, reviews, trailers. We've got... You can still listen to our September movie commentary, which is Death Warrants with John Clever Dam. Which, funnily enough, ah Peter Hyams, the director of End of Days, directed Time Cop and Sudden Death before this movie.
01:06:24
Speaker
So... He worked for Van Damme twice then worked Arnold.
01:06:30
Speaker
Had nothing to do with Death Ward. just the small Didn't he also like work on The Relic, another religious movie? That was something he made right before End of Days. Oh, wow. so it's like like Van Damme, Van Damme, Tom Sizemore, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
01:06:48
Speaker
all the All the action stars in the ideas
01:06:53
Speaker
