Everything Action Commentary: Mom and Dad (2017)

For the latest Everything Action Commentary, Zach and Chris experience some March Madness with the 2017 black comedy, Mom and Dad.

Directed by Brian Taylor, formerly of Neveldine/Taylor and Crank fame, Nicolas Cage and Selma Blair star as parents Brent and Kendall Ryan, who, along with seemingly every other parent on the planet, go into a homicidal madness that makes them want to kill their kids.  Their kids Carly (Anne Winters) and Joshua (Zackary Arthur) have to find a way to survive their parents and hope that the mysterious madness eventually fades.  While watching the movie, Zach and Chris try to figure out how far it's willing to go and discuss the amazing scene where Nicolas Cage destroys a pool table, how Carly's boyfriend, Damon (Robert T. Cunningham), is constantly getting crap kicked out of him, the similarities to The Happening and The Crazies, and more.

You can watch Mom and Dad on Plex or rent it on Prime Video, Apple TV, or Fandango at Home and sync it up to the commentary track to watch along.

00:00:38
Chris Prime
your co-host Chris.
00:00:40
Zach Sheets
And this month, we got a couple of movies that feature ah the main characters.

Theme: Pursuit and Danger in Films

00:00:44
Zach Sheets
um Basically, like everyone's trying to kill them. we got like ah Ready or Not 2. We got ah They Will Kill You, the Zazie Beats movie. And I think, Chris, you got reminded of we were watching this month, which is Mom and Dad, 2017 Nicolas Cage movie.
00:01:01
Chris Prime
Yeah, I also thought about it being March and March Madness is here, so might as well start another madness.
00:01:07
Zach Sheets
e
00:01:11
Zach Sheets
i don't I think i think it's reallyly for like Mother's Day is May usually, right? so This would be like an extremely twisted Mother's Day pick too. but
00:01:20
Zach Sheets
But yeah, i' think neither of us have seen this movie, so we're going in fresh. ah i I heard about it. it was kind of like It's on my list for a while, but I just never got around to watching

Review: 'Mom and Dad' - Director and Acting Style

00:01:28
Zach Sheets
it.
00:01:29
Chris Prime
Ditto.
00:01:32
Zach Sheets
Yeah, so yeah, Nicolas Cage, Selma Blair, directed by Brian Taylor, who used to be one half of Neville Dean Taylor, who, of course, worked with Nicolas Cage on Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance.
00:01:47
Chris Prime
And was just like, you want to come back for more? Want to do more freakout?
00:01:51
Zach Sheets
Yeah, use your what's voodoo shamanism, whatever Nicolas Cage's acting style is?
00:02:00
Zach Sheets
I don't think he wore that legendary behind-the-scenes Ghost Rider footage where he's wearing that mask.
00:02:07
Chris Prime
The painted on face mask.
00:02:09
Zach Sheets
Yep.
00:02:10
Chris Prime
You didn't have to do that, but it he just wanted to.
00:02:18
Zach Sheets
ah But ah I'm expecting some top-tier, like, Neagle's Cage of Sanity in this one, so hopefully we'll get that.
00:02:25
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's like half the selling point. It was like, look how calm Nick Cage is as like a dad. And now watch him not be calm anymore.

Viewing Tips for 'Mom and Dad' on Tubi

00:02:34
Zach Sheets
so uh mom and dad is on tubi if you want to uh catch on there um although just just be aware if you don't have ad blockers on uh you don't have to pause when the commercials come on but um it's you know yeah throw some ad blockers throw vpn in there like get the ads out there or um you know get it some other way i'm sure can probably read other places but uh we're pause at zero um so i'll give a scout double get started here
00:03:03
Zach Sheets
So five, four, three, two, one, play.

First Impressions of 'Mom and Dad'

00:03:24
Chris Prime
It's so refreshing to see a movie just jump right into it.
00:03:27
Zach Sheets
Compared to like last month we watched Panda Plan, there was like 30 studio logos.
00:03:43
Chris Prime
All right. Bending your child. Good start.
00:03:53
Zach Sheets
I like retro 70s logo.
00:03:56
Chris Prime
Well, we're like a minute in and already saw nudity. This is a Brian Taylor like choice.
00:04:10
Zach Sheets
wonder if he's doing any of trademark, I'm going to wear rollerblades and like film this.
00:04:28
Chris Prime
That's Anderson.
00:04:28
Zach Sheets
Are these, like, is this, like, Mission Impossible where we're, like, seeing scenes from, like, the future?
00:04:32
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:04:32
Zach Sheets
like we're going to, like, see like these, like, coming up, scenes are coming up?
00:04:35
Chris Prime
This is later in the episode.
00:04:39
Chris Prime
I didn't suspect it to be like 70s theme. and never I didn't get that from the...
00:04:44
Zach Sheets
Oh, you think he's set in the 70s? Yeah.
00:04:45
Chris Prime
No, no, it's modern, but styize tricut like the like the color grading, grittiness.
00:04:47
Zach Sheets
yeah Yeah, this is, like, very 70s.
00:04:53
Chris Prime
Yep. Like I'm about to watch like the Million Dollar Man over here.
00:05:03
Chris Prime
I'm surprised Brian Taylor didn't direct Fall Guy. like he would have been a good like director for that, too, if it didn't go the other direction.
00:05:18
Zach Sheets
I feel like ah he and Neville Dean both kind of like have not reached the heights that alone. they They reached together. Although,
00:05:23
Chris Prime
I know. It's a shame.
00:05:26
Zach Sheets
I would say Brian Taylor is definitely the more successful than Solo.
00:05:53
Chris Prime
Cock-blocking little brother.
00:06:09
Zach Sheets
And so sets him off. it's like We'll kill you kill you for knocking that painting down. Or that picture down.
00:06:15
Chris Prime
Also, hucking a like vehicle at your brother downstairs is crazy.
00:06:20
Zach Sheets
least it wasn't like a metal, like an old school like metal one. It was a plastic one.
00:06:24
Chris Prime
Was it a plastic well I thought that was like one of those, like, Tanka dump trucks.
00:06:25
Zach Sheets
Hopefully. Yeah, if that was a taco one, could have killed that kid.

Character Roles and Problem Solving

00:06:40
Chris Prime
Alright, there's a lot going on Summer Blair as you're just pining over that coffee.
00:06:44
Zach Sheets
a
00:06:53
Zach Sheets
Who's filming this?
00:07:09
Chris Prime
So, I mean, I love that Nick Cage is like a great father here, but then who's c cleaning up that ketchup mess later?
00:07:15
Zach Sheets
They have a housekeeper, yeah.
00:07:15
Chris Prime
The maid? The maid cook?
00:07:54
Zach Sheets
fast no fit
00:08:06
Chris Prime
This movie has, like, yeah, you know, it's crazy.
00:08:07
Zach Sheets
ah boy.
00:08:08
Chris Prime
This movie has, like, no time to, like, go into racism at, like, this point. Like, you know, like, it's not clever enough.
00:08:38
Chris Prime
Also, who was that little girl?
00:08:39
Zach Sheets
I think it was the housekeeper's daughter.
00:08:41
Chris Prime
Okay. Okay.
00:09:10
Chris Prime
You shouldn't have, because she seems like she's got a criminal thing going on.
00:09:31
Zach Sheets
I'm instascrolling, mom. It's a different thing.
00:09:33
Chris Prime
Heh.
00:10:15
Chris Prime
See, I feel like this movie could just been its own family drama, but Brian Taylor was like, nah.
00:10:26
Chris Prime
Nah, I got a version of Malcolm in the Middle here that's going to be so...
00:10:31
Zach Sheets
He's like, I'm going to flex my chop, my dramatic chops. I'm going to have a real conversation.
00:10:34
Chris Prime
Yeah, yeah.
00:10:46
Zach Sheets
am imagining him though like hanging off the side of this this is like van, though.
00:10:50
Chris Prime
Rollerblades.
00:10:50
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:10:50
Chris Prime
Let's try and get this drama.
00:10:56
Zach Sheets
Like, we can just put it, it's like, Brian, we could just put this on like a a trailer and like just, you know, do it the normal way. He's like, no, going to hang up, I'm going sketch off this van.
00:11:04
Chris Prime
All I know is how to film in action.
00:11:28
Zach Sheets
You know, the thing with think goes cage is like, if he starts acting weird, you don't really notice.
00:11:32
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:11:33
Zach Sheets
It's like, I'm going to kill you. It's like, all right. it's it's what You normally say dad.
00:11:45
Chris Prime
See?
00:11:46
Zach Sheets
Yep.
00:11:46
Chris Prime
That moment right there? Yeah.
00:11:47
Zach Sheets
know
00:12:28
Chris Prime
Meanwhile, in Crank 3...
00:12:29
Zach Sheets
See, this is the... but Wait, what?
00:12:38
Chris Prime
That was the pass.
00:12:38
Zach Sheets
That was his past.
00:12:39
Chris Prime
That was...
00:12:39
Zach Sheets
That was a flashing back to like him being a 17-year-old dude.
00:12:44
Chris Prime
But that version Nick Cage was like a hotter version Nick Cage back then.
00:12:59
Chris Prime
Yeah, no, that version was driving like a V8, like, Phoenix, Camaro, yeah.
00:13:03
Zach Sheets
Like a Camaro.
00:13:08
Chris Prime
No, i think he was driving a Firebird.
00:13:10
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:13:36
Chris Prime
Meanwhile, in the music video of Baby Hit Me One More Time,
00:14:06
Chris Prime
So does this kid not go to school?
00:14:08
Zach Sheets
Yeah, how old is he? i mean, he seems like he he would all be ah be old enough to be in, like, first grade?
00:14:25
Zach Sheets
Second grade? I don't know.
00:14:28
Chris Prime
He's older than

Exploring Nicolas Cage's Character

00:14:38
Chris Prime
Oh, this probably explains why he can't go to school, because he saw, like, a dead animal.
00:14:44
Zach Sheets
He's serial killer.
00:15:02
Chris Prime
Oh my god, that was Nick Cage's Firebird.
00:15:05
Zach Sheets
m
00:15:09
Chris Prime
He kept it in like a pretty good condition considering how old that was. and For whatever reason, he decided to put a injured animal in there.
00:15:25
Zach Sheets
Yeah, the school was like, they sent out a note home that's like, your son has serial killer tendencies, so you gotta keep him home for a while.
00:15:32
Chris Prime
He's got to go on observation.
00:15:34
Zach Sheets
m He's frightening other children.
00:16:42
Zach Sheets
There's some like crazy jumps this movie
00:16:44
Chris Prime
Yeah, this little rough editing.
00:16:47
Zach Sheets
movie. I think he's trying to do like his crank style, but...
00:17:24
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:17:45
Chris Prime
I'm all moms. Yeah.
00:17:55
Zach Sheets
Mom's show should not do like slang.
00:17:59
Chris Prime
yeah
00:18:56
Zach Sheets
Is this like ah like the thesis of the movie?
00:19:30
Zach Sheets
What's weird, like, we like this movie's like the opposite of that, though. It's like the old is like killing the new.
00:20:49
Chris Prime
Like, it's different that the parents are trying to, like, get after the kids. That's different.
00:20:58
Chris Prime
Like, did you ever see that Rabies movie?
00:21:02
Zach Sheets
I don't think so.
00:21:03
Chris Prime
Going with little kids, and then the the teachers are trying to like, distract the ah like the human kids from what's going on.
00:21:11
Chris Prime
That's in the same realm of, like, oh, it's a messed up idea, but if told correctly, like, It can explore these like really dark ideas. I'm not sure if this movie is going to go there.
00:21:22
Chris Prime
i think it's just going to be like as soon as it kicks off, it's just going to be like what what kind of crazy scenes can we show?
00:21:29
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:21:30
Chris Prime
So much that we're telling like a message.
00:22:07
Zach Sheets
I feel like there's definitely some like ah the crazies going on too.
00:22:10
Chris Prime
Yeah. Definitely borrowing that. But the craziest was all about like the community turning on each other. This one, again, what makes it unique is that it's parents trying to kill their kids.
00:22:53
Zach Sheets
It's only like their kid. They don't care about any other except their kid.
00:22:55
Chris Prime
Yeah. They've got like a goal.
00:24:46
Chris Prime
I like how it's almost like a Hunger Games kind of thing, but not quite.
00:25:02
Chris Prime
But it's sort of like unannounced. It's like, all right, well, your parents are here to try to murder you.
00:25:09
Zach Sheets
they didn't bring weapons with them. i guess that'd be making it obvious what is happening.
00:25:13
Chris Prime
They can't make it out. I mean, it's all like
00:25:14
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:25:16
Chris Prime
Rage.
00:25:39
Chris Prime
Like, I feel like this started as like a short story about parents, like getting the bloodlust to kill their own.
00:25:44
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:25:45
Chris Prime
And then it probably evolved in some like, what if like everyone else did?
00:26:25
Chris Prime
Thank you.
00:27:14
Chris Prime
Like a character from Black Snake Moon just walked in here.
00:27:18
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:27:28
Chris Prime
Oh, it seems like he was just regular or violent.
00:27:34
Zach Sheets
It seems like he normally is, but now it's like he's going to finish it
00:27:36
Chris Prime
Worse.

Film's Tone: From Family Drama to Horror

00:28:02
Chris Prime
Oh, that was quick. Yeah.
00:28:16
Zach Sheets
I feel like this is like, this is like too real for Taylor's like style.
00:28:20
Chris Prime
yeah
00:28:21
Zach Sheets
This is like a weird, like departure of like, Oh, this is like actually like disturbing and horrific.
00:28:30
Chris Prime
Instead of like funny, gross out violent, this is a little more calm, which think we're going to get into it more. Like it's going to probably ramp up. It can't start out crazy.
00:28:41
Chris Prime
Like it can't start out that fast.
00:28:41
Zach Sheets
Well, yeah, when Nicolas Cage starts, like, you know becoming a murderer. Yep.
00:28:46
Chris Prime
Well, that's who you pay to really see.
00:28:48
Zach Sheets
yup
00:29:27
Chris Prime
Thank
00:30:01
Zach Sheets
You're old now. i don't
00:30:06
Chris Prime
See, it's the ageism thing.
00:30:43
Zach Sheets
you
00:31:07
Chris Prime
Thank
00:31:18
Zach Sheets
Is this movie going to go all the way where her sister is going to kill her newborn baby?
00:31:25
Chris Prime
Probably. Just like the rage. And that, I don't know, that could be like tastefully done or untastefully, but assuming this movie was sort of like a cult watch movie, not so much a wide release, everyone was watching it.
00:31:39
Chris Prime
I feel like ah it's going to get like crazy.
00:31:48
Chris Prime
Again, that's im like, oh, I think they tried too hard to like the message when it's like people just wanted to be silly.
00:32:22
Zach Sheets
There's kind of a little bit of like the happening going on too.
00:32:25
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:32:28
Zach Sheets
Except don't think it's not trees this time.
00:32:33
Chris Prime
Yeah, but like we're following characters who just are like no idea what's going on.
00:33:05
Chris Prime
Oh, why is Dr. Oz in this movie?
00:33:15
Zach Sheets
This is just what he says on like a daily basis now.
00:33:18
Chris Prime
Yeah. It's crazy to think this is actually like the Department of like Health now.
00:33:23
Zach Sheets
Yep.
00:33:24
Chris Prime
Like, Dr. Oz, who was in this movie...
00:33:33
Chris Prime
Do you think he actually believes that? Like, do you think now he's sort of whispering in the U.S.
00:33:35
Zach Sheets
Probably.
00:33:37
Chris Prime
s government, just like, I was in the movie Mom and Dad, so I can tell you, like,
00:33:38
Zach Sheets
okay that that could that could That could happen.
00:34:23
Chris Prime
Is that b Brian Taylor?
00:34:30
Zach Sheets
Is he British?
00:34:32
Chris Prime
I think Brian Taylor's British.
00:34:36
Zach Sheets
It says he's an American filmmaker. So, yeah, I don't think he's British.
00:34:38
Chris Prime
Oh.
00:34:49
Zach Sheets
Oh, it's Grant Morrison.
00:34:51
Chris Prime
Okay. Okay.
00:36:00
Chris Prime
oh.
00:36:01
Zach Sheets
Oh, no.
00:36:09
Chris Prime
Is it going to be like a look?
00:36:34
Zach Sheets
Oh, no.
00:36:53
Chris Prime
Ooh, the music choice is just interesting.
00:36:55
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:37:03
Zach Sheets
so
00:37:17
Chris Prime
So is it going to be finding out like if certain people are adopted or like if someone had an affair? It's going to be like this, where the parent figure comes out?
00:37:30
Zach Sheets
yeah that's ah that's like like weird like is it Is it your biological child that you want to kill? or is any any child
00:37:36
Chris Prime
i think I think it's your biological child.
00:37:43
Chris Prime
See, only the adults are going after their kids, so... don't care about anyone else.
00:38:21
Zach Sheets
That guy didn't actually kill anybody. That's just his normal routine.
00:38:23
Chris Prime
Yeah, he so he's just a watermelon smasher. He's just a Gallagher. Like, an impersonator.
00:38:28
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:38:33
Chris Prime
Oh yeah, Nick Cage is in this movie.............

Nicolas Cage's Memorable Performance

00:38:35
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:39:01
Zach Sheets
Man, luckily he's like the only person in this office, apparently.
00:39:27
Zach Sheets
Oh man, here the the cage the cage rage is unleashed.
00:39:43
Chris Prime
That was like an ADR inline.
00:39:45
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:40:28
Chris Prime
That's and not going to be creepy.
00:41:35
Zach Sheets
So Selma Blair like saw like the weird static thing, but she's she's not affected yet? or
00:41:39
Chris Prime
I think she has to see her kid.
00:41:41
Zach Sheets
And then ah then it it triggers.
00:41:42
Chris Prime
Yeah, like that's what happened Cage. he He heard the noise, but then he saw the kids and that's where he threw into a rage.
00:41:52
Zach Sheets
Interrupted his porn. they can think get It's everywhere.
00:43:04
Chris Prime
Josh is an Ninja Turtle now.
00:43:05
Zach Sheets
ye just so It's just thing that it seems like it doesn't it doesn't wear off after you kill your kid. Like you're still like it crazy angry.............
00:43:15
Chris Prime
Well, think it's like aggression. You don't know what to do with it.
00:44:07
Chris Prime
It's cool that this portable DVD player can get live cable.
00:44:11
Zach Sheets
he
00:44:34
Zach Sheets
uncredited Bokeem Woodbine for like one scene. But
00:44:38
Chris Prime
I feel like they just filmed that real quick. They're like, hey, you doing anything right now?
00:44:41
Zach Sheets
it was like, it was like walking the like the street a lot of the day and it was like, hey, sit in this like park bench for a second or like, it's like,
00:45:15
Chris Prime
Oh, it's gonna be one of those generational talks?
00:45:28
Chris Prime
Oh, here comes like just unscripted Nick Cage thoughts.
00:45:31
Zach Sheets
Yep. That's all I just watched like today in his office.
00:45:39
Chris Prime
Here comes that, like, see the person and you just fall into a rage.
00:45:58
Zach Sheets
He's breaking the rules.
00:46:13
Chris Prime
Thank
00:46:39
Zach Sheets
What the hell?
00:46:40
Chris Prime
yeah Why are we cutting away to something? i think Nick Cage wanted to make a pool table, like a billiards table.
00:46:48
Zach Sheets
Maybe.
00:46:57
Zach Sheets
ah do what do whatever you feel, Nick. nick Just do do whatever you feel.
00:47:26
Chris Prime
You probably should have leveled this before you felted
00:47:30
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:47:57
Zach Sheets
I built a pool table.
00:48:04
Chris Prime
Thank
00:48:49
Zach Sheets
This is what i signed up for. Nicolas Cage is freaking out.
00:48:50
Chris Prime
Yeah. is how the movie should have started. it This is how like it starts with him.
00:48:53
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:48:55
Chris Prime
This is him being kind of like a stressed out parent. And then comes the, like, it's getting worse.
00:49:12
Chris Prime
Yeah, this is before the rage thing. This is just Nick Cage.
00:49:14
Zach Sheets
Yeah. He was already full of rage.
00:49:43
Chris Prime
Nick Cage is throwing way much of his back into the swing.
00:49:54
Zach Sheets
I want to interviews about this movie. It's like, yeah, I yeah threw my back out smashing a pool table.
00:50:02
Zach Sheets
I was laid up for three weeks.
00:50:05
Chris Prime
had to delay filming.
00:50:47
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:51:07
Zach Sheets
I want to believe this is all improvised by Nicolas Cage.
00:51:09
Chris Prime
yeah
00:51:24
Chris Prime
It's out
00:51:46
Chris Prime
soundma blair's turn
00:51:48
Zach Sheets
I
00:52:03
Zach Sheets
i mean, you don't have to.
00:52:07
Chris Prime
Well, life is more like what you're growing up into being and taking the role like you grow with it. It's weird that they're giving this life lesson. That's what i'm saying.
00:52:17
Chris Prime
Like it's tonally it shifts from like the intensity, then it goes back and it grounds it back to what it's like being like scared of growing up and being an adult and the realities.
00:52:18
Zach Sheets
okay
00:52:30
Zach Sheets
And you have to have kids.
00:52:37
Chris Prime
See, it's like, what's this movie like with a person who doesn't have kids? Just like, they're just like, what the hell?
00:52:41
Zach Sheets
Yeah, just like walk around like everyone's going nuts.
00:53:03
Zach Sheets
i don't I don't think the sketch is doing it right.
00:53:05
Chris Prime
Look that, they're doing the title, Mom and Dad.
00:53:12
Zach Sheets
Mom and fucking dad.
00:53:27
Chris Prime
my god.
00:53:43
Chris Prime
Nah, I'm not going to listen to that.
00:54:16
Chris Prime
Thank you.
00:55:22
Chris Prime
That's a creative shot. Yeah.
00:55:35
Zach Sheets
Probably not the best time to say that, but...
00:55:52
Chris Prime
Can you open the door so the movie can continue?
00:55:59
Zach Sheets
Mommy just wants to kill you a little bit.
00:56:04
Chris Prime
Here go. Here's the cage freak out.
00:56:47
Chris Prime
Oh cool, Sawzall.
00:57:04
Chris Prime
You need a pilot cut before you can just do that. That's not how Sawzall works.
00:57:09
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:57:46
Zach Sheets
Oh, Jesus.
00:57:49
Chris Prime
Kids armed. You thought it gonna like the bird? Or whatever, the animal?
00:57:55
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Yeah.
00:58:37
Zach Sheets
Jesus, kids go like full training, like a taxi driver.
00:58:39
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:58:42
Chris Prime
That's why I'm like, oh, if the kid, if this didn't happen to make the world crazy, the kid could just be like a little unhinged.
00:58:51
Zach Sheets
that That's also why he was not he doesn't go to school.
01:00:19
Chris Prime
feel been hours, right?
01:00:21
Zach Sheets
Probably, yeah.
01:00:28
Chris Prime
Also, is that boyfriend dead?
01:00:33
Zach Sheets
I mean, he he's disappeared from the movie, so...
01:00:49
Chris Prime
you
01:01:22
Zach Sheets
I guess whatever's happening is making them like more creative.
01:01:25
Chris Prime
Yeah.
01:02:25
Chris Prime
You know, surprising this movie moved at such a brisk pace in the beginning. And now it slows down for like this one family moment. they could They could have done really like a lot more chaos with like the community and all that.
01:02:50
Zach Sheets
you well It seems like this like this is like the main thing they came up with first, but then but like they only had 45 minutes of like a story.
01:02:58
Chris Prime
Yeah.
01:02:59
Zach Sheets
So it's like, well, we're going add like a some other stuff. They like set it up. We'd like had half an hour of other stuff.
01:03:05
Chris Prime
Yeah, I feel like they they definitely filmed a chunk of this and went, okay, well, it just can't be this family.
01:03:21
Chris Prime
Wasn't there a baby? Oh, yeah, the babies in the hospital.
01:03:23
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
01:03:32
Zach Sheets
This is like this like helping their marriage.

Gas Leak Scene: Analysis and Consequences

01:04:23
Zach Sheets
i mean Do they realize that the gas is like getting pumped down into the basement?
01:04:26
Chris Prime
I think she just realized that.
01:04:32
Chris Prime
She also probably wasn't the brightest, so she's realizing that now.
01:04:35
Zach Sheets
a
01:04:41
Chris Prime
Also, I feel like enough gas has filled your basement for hours now, so...
01:04:45
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I mean, yeah, like, they should probably be dead at this point. It's...
01:04:53
Chris Prime
This is like the slowest gas leak.
01:05:27
Zach Sheets
What are these weird, like, robot noises in the background, too? Do you hear those?
01:05:32
Chris Prime
Yeah, they're just random like sound effects.
01:05:35
Zach Sheets
it supposed to be the signal, or is it just like, we're gonna put random noises back around?
01:05:43
Chris Prime
And then they're just using all the sound budget. Alright, well we bought this like mix soundboard. Might as well hit every button on there.
01:05:50
Zach Sheets
got this keyboard that makes weird noises.
01:05:55
Chris Prime
But this is the kind of thing you'd hear in like a sneaking mission.
01:05:59
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
01:06:42
Chris Prime
Man, Cage just really wants to back to his pool table.
01:06:45
Zach Sheets
He's so pumped.
01:07:36
Chris Prime
How do they end up up into something? How do they end up in like the attic?
01:07:43
Zach Sheets
they crawled up the, there was like some sort of like vent or something.
01:07:48
Chris Prime
The vent was big enough for like...
01:07:49
Zach Sheets
like i hit Like a heating vent, I guess. don't know.
01:07:51
Chris Prime
That's like huge.
01:07:52
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
01:08:21
Zach Sheets
Ghost Rider again.
01:08:22
Chris Prime
He becomes the ghost rider.
01:08:44
Chris Prime
It'd also be another thing if the parents are also kind of like cannibals. Like, they they see their kids as sort of like a food supply that's owed to them.
01:08:55
Chris Prime
I think that'd be like a little different. A little more like why their goal of finding these kids is a little more ravenous.
01:09:09
Zach Sheets
Oh, the boyfriend isn't dead.
01:09:39
Chris Prime
So what do you think about this new age soundtrack?
01:09:44
Chris Prime
It's like techno and...
01:09:46
Zach Sheets
so It's a little weird.
01:09:48
Chris Prime
techno dance? Industrial?
01:09:51
Zach Sheets
who did the music? is it's so Mr. Bill did the music.
01:11:08
Zach Sheets
I'm trying to think of 2017. Like, that was kind of like a peak dubstep.
01:11:12
Chris Prime
Yeah. That's why it's like a little bit dubsteppy.
01:11:16
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm. wo but bob
01:11:18
Chris Prime
Parent fight. well but but but but but Kill your kids.
01:11:26
Chris Prime
I think Peek's dubstep was like 2013. two thousand It was just definitely like a decline.
01:11:44
Zach Sheets
I think it peaked when Saito had the dubstep
01:11:51
Chris Prime
That was 2014, 2015? fourteen does it fifteen
01:12:29
Zach Sheets
I think the gas is still leaking into the house.
01:12:32
Chris Prime
No, they turned it off.
01:12:33
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
01:12:38
Chris Prime
No, the dad turned it off before. Wow, that is a sharp hanger.
01:13:16
Chris Prime
I'm out.
01:13:17
Zach Sheets
and
01:13:17
Chris Prime
Nick Cage looks better after surviving like a fireball.
01:13:20
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Like, the boyfriend is, like, getting the shit kicked out of him for not being their kid. Like, he's getting the worst his...
01:13:30
Chris Prime
Yeah.
01:13:56
Chris Prime
How's Nick Cage not promoting more, like, hardware stuff?
01:14:01
Zach Sheets
Yep.
01:14:49
Chris Prime
It works on them too.
01:14:57
Zach Sheets
Special guest Lance Hendrickson!
01:14:59
Chris Prime
Oh yeah, I forgot about that.
01:15:45
Chris Prime
Okay, it's ah again, a lot of choice.
01:15:48
Zach Sheets
hey
01:15:51
Zach Sheets
Is this because he's just like barking like a now?
01:15:54
Chris Prime
Yep, it's a choice.
01:16:08
Zach Sheets
Because he's just like, yeah, you know, was in this scene, I thought i kind of thought like I'm like a hunting dog, so I just started barking.
01:17:28
Zach Sheets
I'm still extremely confused like how old this kid's supposed to be.
01:17:31
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's weird, right? Like, is he 12? But then he, like, hangs out in footie pajamas all day?
01:17:37
Zach Sheets
and his dad is just like cursing at him and like telling him about how he fucked a girl and destroyed a car.
01:17:44
Chris Prime
Awesome dad.
01:18:09
Chris Prime
Yeah, but like, he brought in a dead animal in the car. That's not as bad as, I guess, trying to hook up in a car on like a highway.
01:18:12
Zach Sheets
I
01:18:19
Zach Sheets
think it was a parking It looks like you're just doing donuts.
01:18:43
Chris Prime
Like a whiny dog now.
01:18:49
Zach Sheets
Scratch at the door! Scratch at the door!
01:19:28
Chris Prime
Oh, this movie slowly turned like, Resident Evil 6, like, The Village. Or 7.
01:19:39
Chris Prime
No, it's 7, right? That's the one where it's, like, the not The Village. The the one where, like, you're on the Baker house.
01:19:49
Zach Sheets
Baker app.
01:20:27
Zach Sheets
Man, the boyfriend's like the Terminator. just keeps coming back.
01:20:35
Chris Prime
Yeah, this kind of this whole section reminds me of Resident Evil 7 with the bakers.
01:20:39
Zach Sheets
Oh, yeah. Okay. Yeah.
01:20:42
Chris Prime
Jogged your memory now.
01:20:43
Zach Sheets
Yeah. so like You're just like the the Baker I'm like, what movie was that?
01:20:56
Chris Prime
Lance Henderson just turned into mush. like
01:20:59
Zach Sheets
yep
01:21:14
Chris Prime
you
01:21:44
Zach Sheets
Pool table was all metaphor.
01:22:03
Chris Prime
Thank
01:22:37
Chris Prime
Wait, what?
01:22:42
Zach Sheets
I think it was, i think was you know, kill you.
01:22:48
Chris Prime
Okay, like, it could have ended a little bit better.
01:22:54
Chris Prime
It's that, it's like an old joke that parents like say they love their kids but they want to hurt them, like, it's just that, that's the whole point.
01:22:54
Zach Sheets
There's...
01:22:59
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
01:23:02
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
01:23:02
Chris Prime
What the whole playing adolescence thing? What about the whole, like, biology thing? Or race relations? It it barely touched on that.
01:23:17
Zach Sheets
Well, i got I got mostly what I wanted out of it, which is like you some solid Nicolas Cage freaking out.
01:23:24
Chris Prime
Yeah. It's what, uh, the selling point is.
01:23:31
Chris Prime
I just think like it introduced such a like crazy world that like I kinda want to explore that too.
01:23:37
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
01:23:42
Zach Sheets
Like, yeah, where where' the where's the signal coming from?
01:23:46
Chris Prime
do you like What happens after you kill? Are you back to normal?
01:23:51
Zach Sheets
Yeah, that's why more like, if you kill your if you kill your kid, like, are you just like, you kind of snap out of it and be like oh what i did what did I do are you just like, you're always in this like state of rage now?
01:24:01
Chris Prime
Well, they did interview a person who did, you know, i guess go after their child.
01:24:06
Zach Sheets
oh Bookie, yeah, Bookie Woodward was just like, yeah, it was good.
01:24:07
Chris Prime
Yeah.
01:24:09
Zach Sheets
it was great.
01:24:16
Chris Prime
ah
01:24:16
Zach Sheets
So, yeah, so I guess you're yeah just like, yeah, I'm glad I did it. Like,
01:24:20
Chris Prime
But I just wish there was a little more like horror factor to it, because the rest of like the boyfriend just got the shit kicked out of him from like most of the movie.
01:24:37
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I think like what you're saying is that like like at the the beginning you had like more overall mayhem. like We just saw kids getting thrown out of windows. and like Kind of like the Dawn of the Dead like ah remake, where you're just like driving you through and justs like seeing like insanity happening.
01:24:56
Chris Prime
I mean, had like some interesting points with ageism and then where it's like being a parent and the whole sacrifice and the like ah new role.
01:25:09
Zach Sheets
Being like, you know, like kind of being jealous of your kid and like, uh, like resent your kids.
01:25:17
Chris Prime
Yeah. And then it kind of bubbling out. it It's relatable they kind of lead in that early instead of kind of doing the family drama like the generic broad scope of the family.
01:25:31
Zach Sheets
Mm
01:25:31
Chris Prime
And then i don't know, explain the dead animal thing. I thought that was going to come back in a more meaningful way.
01:25:41
Zach Sheets
Yeah, just explain more about that kid. Like, we have... kids That kid's the weirdest character in the movie.
01:25:47
Zach Sheets
Joshua, he's, like, 10 years old. He doesn't go to school. He tries like, rehabilitate, like, injured animals. He's, like... He's got... He knows how to shoot a gun. what is going on with that kid?
01:26:03
Chris Prime
Yeah, it it could have been like little more fluid, but it's it was, you know, for a shock value, it wasn't as crazy as I thought it would be.
01:26:21
Chris Prime
What is it? I'm looking up the IMDb facts. I mean, Nick Cage said he had a great time filming this.
01:26:33
Chris Prime
I mean, that's just one of the facts. but
01:26:38
Zach Sheets
Well, i mean I mean, yeah, he must have worked well like but like worked with Brian Taylor on Ghost Rider. He's just like, yeah, I'll freak out for you guys for you again.
01:26:52
Chris Prime
And I do enjoy the message. I like that this is a very different movie than a typical like horror movie. It's got more family...
01:27:03
Chris Prime
you know, connections and, and like, you see like where this movie could have been what without the freak out. Nick Cage is like, life isn't where he wants it to be. The family is sort of like spoiled and then questionable of like what ties them together as a family.
01:27:24
Chris Prime
But that gets like shelved for the last act. They're just like, all right, here comes the violence.
01:27:33
Zach Sheets
Oh man, this this is the year before Mandy came out?
01:27:39
Chris Prime
Cage. I guess this is like the return of Cage. Like he he was getting more mainstream stuff.

Nicolas Cage's Career Resurgence

01:27:45
Zach Sheets
yeah because i mean Yeah, because he was in like the dregs for a while there. but Just doing like all those like like ridiculous directed video, like pay the ghost and all that crap.
01:27:58
Chris Prime
Yeah, this is like not full of crap in a Cage movie.
01:28:05
Chris Prime
And you think about it. 2000... two thousand like 14, 2017, this was the like, oh, he would just make DVD, like should do DVD movies up until like mom and dad, I think got like a limited release.
01:28:22
Zach Sheets
ah extremely extremely limited yeah you only made like like a quarter like a quarter of a million dollars
01:28:28
Chris Prime
And then, yeah, after that, after mom and dad, 2018 was Mandy,
01:28:34
Zach Sheets
well it's it's Mandy Spider-Verse ah Colorado of Space Prisoners of the Ghost Land like yeah we were like back in like Nicolas Cage's back baby
01:28:42
Chris Prime
Yeah.
01:28:46
Chris Prime
Yeah. like it's It's nice that basically the bounce back happened around that time. Of course, you know, the underbearable weight of massive talent is such a great Nick Cage movie.
01:29:03
Chris Prime
But it's nice that he's exactly who you want him to be in this movie. It wasn't
01:29:09
Zach Sheets
Yes.
01:29:10
Chris Prime
It was tastefully used. It's what you expect.
01:29:15
Zach Sheets
the him Him destroying a a pool table and like a ranting is an all-time Nichols Cage scene.
01:29:27
Zach Sheets
He's just like saying he's got like like cottage cheese belly and like butter coming out of his ears or whatever he's going while smashing a pool table.
01:29:36
Chris Prime
Hair out of his ears and nose, cat of she's thighs and like a blue bonnet stomach.
01:29:38
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
01:29:41
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
01:29:41
Chris Prime
Just aging. I feel like that was just Nick Cage. That's just Nick Cage ranting.
01:29:56
Chris Prime
Oh, yeah. Is there anything else you want to mention?
01:29:58
Zach Sheets
No, it was fun. I'm glad I finally saw it after, you know, almost 10 years.
01:30:05
Chris Prime
Yeah, yeah, I held off on it too, and think it's worth the wait.
01:30:09
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
01:30:10
Chris Prime
It was exactly what I thought it'd be, but I think I see why it wasn't a general audience, because it just sort of ends on artsy note for what the ramp, the, like, escalation thing is.
01:30:27
Zach Sheets
Yeah, and it's it's it's not quite as, you know, there's other movies that probably do this kind of a similar thing better than this one, but like the crazies.
01:30:39
Chris Prime
I gotta see ah Rabies next to see how well they do a concept like that of a black comedy mortality in life. But that one's a traditional zombie movie.
01:30:50
Zach Sheets
is it Is Rabies like, it's like, is that David Cronenberg's first movie?
01:30:54
Chris Prime
No, no, no. i'm not It's like newer.
01:30:57
Zach Sheets
Oh, it's newer. OK.
01:31:02
Zach Sheets
i feel i feel like there was like that was like a.
01:31:08
Chris Prime
The one I'm thinking is the one with Elijah Wood and he's working at the day camp.
01:31:13
Zach Sheets
OK. Yeah. well actually, I think there's I think there's a lot of movies called rabies that are like like a bunch of random horror movies.
01:31:27
Zach Sheets
I feel like, yeah, what was... Oh, im I'm thinking of Shivers. That's the David Cronenberg one.
01:31:37
Zach Sheets
And it's like that's like a parasite that like gets into you and starts like doing horrible things.
01:31:44
Chris Prime
And the movie I'm thinking of is Cooties.
01:31:46
Zach Sheets
Okay, yeah.
01:31:48
Chris Prime
Which is also being recommended by 2B to me right now.
01:31:52
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm. I mean, Tubi has everything. ah just It's like secret the secretly the best streaming service.
01:32:05
Zach Sheets
You can just be like, oh it's not Tubi? Of course it is.
01:32:10
Zach Sheets
But yeah, so I that'll wrap it up for this month's commentary. I'll come back next month. We'll have another movie to dive into. And ah header head over to the main site. Check out over all of regular podcast episodes and reviews, shares, news, everything I'll be putting up there.
01:32:24
Zach Sheets
And yeah, so for us, I'm Zach and we will see you next time.
