Zach Sheets: And this month, we got a couple of movies that feature ah the main characters. um Basically, like everyone's trying to kill them. we got like ah Ready or Not 2. We got ah They Will Kill You, the Zazie Beats movie. And I think, Chris, you got reminded of we were watching this month, which is Mom and Dad, 2017 Nicolas Cage movie.
Chris Prime: Yeah, I also thought about it being March and March Madness is here, so might as well start another madness.
Zach Sheets: e
Zach Sheets: i don't I think i think it's reallyly for like Mother's Day is May usually, right? so This would be like an extremely twisted Mother's Day pick too. but
Zach Sheets: But yeah, i' think neither of us have seen this movie, so we're going in fresh. ah i I heard about it. it was kind of like It's on my list for a while, but I just never got around to watching it.
Chris Prime: Ditto.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, so yeah, Nicolas Cage, Selma Blair, directed by Brian Taylor, who used to be one half of Neville Dean Taylor, who, of course, worked with Nicolas Cage on Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance.
Chris Prime: And was just like, you want to come back for more? Want to do more freakout?
Zach Sheets: Yeah, use your what's voodoo shamanism, whatever Nicolas Cage's acting style is?
Zach Sheets: I don't think he wore that legendary behind-the-scenes Ghost Rider footage where he's wearing that mask.
Chris Prime: The painted on face mask.

Chris Prime: You didn't have to do that, but it he just wanted to.
Zach Sheets: ah But ah I'm expecting some top-tier, like, Neagle's Cage of Sanity in this one, so hopefully we'll get that.
Chris Prime: Yeah, it's like half the selling point. It was like, look how calm Nick Cage is as like a dad. And now watch him not be calm anymore.
Zach Sheets: so uh mom and dad is on tubi if you want to uh catch on there um although just just be aware if you don't have ad blockers on uh you don't have to pause when the commercials come on but um it's you know yeah throw some ad blockers throw vpn in there like get the ads out there or um you know get it some other way i'm sure can probably read other places but uh we're pause at zero um so i'll give a scout double get started here

Chris Prime: It's so refreshing to see a movie just jump right into it.
Zach Sheets: Compared to like last month we watched Panda Plan, there was like 30 studio logos.

Chris Prime: Well, we're like a minute in and already saw nudity. This is a Brian Taylor like choice.
Zach Sheets: wonder if he's doing any of trademark, I'm going to wear rollerblades and like film this.

Chris Prime: I'm surprised Brian Taylor didn't direct Fall Guy. like he would have been a good like director for that, too, if it didn't go the other direction.
Zach Sheets: I feel like ah he and Neville Dean both kind of like have not reached the heights that alone. they They reached together. Although,

Zach Sheets: I would say Brian Taylor is definitely the more successful than Solo.

Chris Prime: So, I mean, I love that Nick Cage is like a great father here, but then who's c cleaning up that ketchup mess later?

Zach Sheets: Yeah, how old is he? i mean, he seems like he he would all be ah be old enough to be in, like, first grade?

Zach Sheets: Yeah, the school was like, they sent out a note home that's like, your son has serial killer tendencies, so you gotta keep him home for a while.
Chris Prime: He's got to go on observation.
Zach Sheets: m He's frightening other children.
Zach Sheets: There's some like crazy jumps this movie
Chris Prime: Yeah, this little rough editing.
Zach Sheets: movie. I think he's trying to do like his crank style, but...
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.

Zach Sheets: Mom's show should not do like slang.

Zach Sheets: Is this like ah like the thesis of the movie?
Zach Sheets: What's weird, like, we like this movie's like the opposite of that, though. It's like the old is like killing the new.
Chris Prime: Like, it's different that the parents are trying to, like, get after the kids. That's different.
Chris Prime: Like, did you ever see that Rabies movie?
Zach Sheets: I don't think so.
Chris Prime: Going with little kids, and then the the teachers are trying to like, distract the ah like the human kids from what's going on.
Chris Prime: That's in the same realm of, like, oh, it's a messed up idea, but if told correctly, like, It can explore these like really dark ideas. I'm not sure if this movie is going to go there.
Chris Prime: i think it's just going to be like as soon as it kicks off, it's just going to be like what what kind of crazy scenes can we show?
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: So much that we're telling like a message.
Zach Sheets: I feel like there's definitely some like ah the crazies going on too.
Chris Prime: Yeah. Definitely borrowing that. But the craziest was all about like the community turning on each other. This one, again, what makes it unique is that it's parents trying to kill their kids.
Zach Sheets: It's only like their kid. They don't care about any other except their kid.
Chris Prime: Yeah. They've got like a goal.
Chris Prime: I like how it's almost like a Hunger Games kind of thing, but not quite.
Chris Prime: But it's sort of like unannounced. It's like, all right, well, your parents are here to try to murder you.
Zach Sheets: they didn't bring weapons with them. i guess that'd be making it obvious what is happening.
Chris Prime: They can't make it out. I mean, it's all like
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: Rage.
Chris Prime: Like, I feel like this started as like a short story about parents, like getting the bloodlust to kill their own.
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: And then it probably evolved in some like, what if like everyone else did?
Chris Prime: Thank you.
Chris Prime: Like a character from Black Snake Moon just walked in here.
Zach Sheets: yeah
Chris Prime: Oh, it seems like he was just regular or violent.
Zach Sheets: It seems like he normally is, but now it's like he's going to finish it

Zach Sheets: I feel like this is like, this is like too real for Taylor's like style.

Zach Sheets: This is like a weird, like departure of like, Oh, this is like actually like disturbing and horrific.
Chris Prime: Instead of like funny, gross out violent, this is a little more calm, which think we're going to get into it more. Like it's going to probably ramp up. It can't start out crazy.
Chris Prime: Like it can't start out that fast.
Zach Sheets: Well, yeah, when Nicolas Cage starts, like, you know becoming a murderer. Yep.
Chris Prime: Well, that's who you pay to really see.

Zach Sheets: Is this movie going to go all the way where her sister is going to kill her newborn baby?
Chris Prime: Probably. Just like the rage. And that, I don't know, that could be like tastefully done or untastefully, but assuming this movie was sort of like a cult watch movie, not so much a wide release, everyone was watching it.
Chris Prime: I feel like ah it's going to get like crazy.
Chris Prime: Again, that's im like, oh, I think they tried too hard to like the message when it's like people just wanted to be silly.
Zach Sheets: There's kind of a little bit of like the happening going on too.
Chris Prime: Yeah.
Zach Sheets: Except don't think it's not trees this time.
Chris Prime: Yeah, but like we're following characters who just are like no idea what's going on.
Chris Prime: Oh, why is Dr. Oz in this movie?
Zach Sheets: This is just what he says on like a daily basis now.
Chris Prime: Yeah. It's crazy to think this is actually like the Department of like Health now.
Zach Sheets: Yep.
Chris Prime: Like, Dr. Oz, who was in this movie...
Chris Prime: Do you think he actually believes that? Like, do you think now he's sort of whispering in the U.S.
Zach Sheets: Probably.
Chris Prime: s government, just like, I was in the movie Mom and Dad, so I can tell you, like,

Chris Prime: Yeah, this is before the rage thing. This is just Nick Cage.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. He was already full of rage.
Chris Prime: Nick Cage is throwing way much of his back into the swing.
Zach Sheets: I want to interviews about this movie. It's like, yeah, I yeah threw my back out smashing a pool table.
Zach Sheets: I was laid up for three weeks.
Chris Prime: had to delay filming.
Chris Prime: Yeah.
Zach Sheets: I want to believe this is all improvised by Nicolas Cage.

Chris Prime: Like it's tonally it shifts from like the intensity, then it goes back and it grounds it back to what it's like being like scared of growing up and being an adult and the realities.

Chris Prime: You know, surprising this movie moved at such a brisk pace in the beginning. And now it slows down for like this one family moment. they could They could have done really like a lot more chaos with like the community and all that.
Zach Sheets: you well It seems like this like this is like the main thing they came up with first, but then but like they only had 45 minutes of like a story.
Chris Prime: Yeah.
Zach Sheets: So it's like, well, we're going add like a some other stuff. They like set it up. We'd like had half an hour of other stuff.
Chris Prime: Yeah, I feel like they they definitely filmed a chunk of this and went, okay, well, it just can't be this family.
Chris Prime: Wasn't there a baby? Oh, yeah, the babies in the hospital.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Zach Sheets: This is like this like helping their marriage.

Chris Prime: But this is the kind of thing you'd hear in like a sneaking mission.

Chris Prime: It'd also be another thing if the parents are also kind of like cannibals. Like, they they see their kids as sort of like a food supply that's owed to them.
Chris Prime: I think that'd be like a little different. A little more like why their goal of finding these kids is a little more ravenous.
Zach Sheets: Oh, the boyfriend isn't dead.
Chris Prime: So what do you think about this new age soundtrack?

Zach Sheets: so It's a little weird.

Chris Prime: What the whole playing adolescence thing? What about the whole, like, biology thing? Or race relations? It it barely touched on that.
Zach Sheets: Well, i got I got mostly what I wanted out of it, which is like you some solid Nicolas Cage freaking out.
Chris Prime: Yeah. It's what, uh, the selling point is.
Chris Prime: I just think like it introduced such a like crazy world that like I kinda want to explore that too.
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Zach Sheets: Like, yeah, where where' the where's the signal coming from?
Chris Prime: do you like What happens after you kill? Are you back to normal?
Zach Sheets: Yeah, that's why more like, if you kill your if you kill your kid, like, are you just like, you kind of snap out of it and be like oh what i did what did I do are you just like, you're always in this like state of rage now?
Chris Prime: Well, they did interview a person who did, you know, i guess go after their child.
Zach Sheets: oh Bookie, yeah, Bookie Woodward was just like, yeah, it was good.
Chris Prime: Yeah.
Zach Sheets: it was great.
Chris Prime: ah
Zach Sheets: So, yeah, so I guess you're yeah just like, yeah, I'm glad I did it. Like,
Chris Prime: But I just wish there was a little more like horror factor to it, because the rest of like the boyfriend just got the shit kicked out of him from like most of the movie.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, I think like what you're saying is that like like at the the beginning you had like more overall mayhem. like We just saw kids getting thrown out of windows. and like Kind of like the Dawn of the Dead like ah remake, where you're just like driving you through and justs like seeing like insanity happening.
Chris Prime: I mean, had like some interesting points with ageism and then where it's like being a parent and the whole sacrifice and the like ah new role.
Zach Sheets: Being like, you know, like kind of being jealous of your kid and like, uh, like resent your kids.
Chris Prime: Yeah. And then it kind of bubbling out. it It's relatable they kind of lead in that early instead of kind of doing the family drama like the generic broad scope of the family.
Zach Sheets: Mm
Chris Prime: And then i don't know, explain the dead animal thing. I thought that was going to come back in a more meaningful way.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, just explain more about that kid. Like, we have... kids That kid's the weirdest character in the movie.
Zach Sheets: Joshua, he's, like, 10 years old. He doesn't go to school. He tries like, rehabilitate, like, injured animals. He's, like... He's got... He knows how to shoot a gun. what is going on with that kid?
Chris Prime: Yeah, it it could have been like little more fluid, but it's it was, you know, for a shock value, it wasn't as crazy as I thought it would be.
Chris Prime: What is it? I'm looking up the IMDb facts. I mean, Nick Cage said he had a great time filming this.
Chris Prime: I mean, that's just one of the facts. but
Zach Sheets: Well, i mean I mean, yeah, he must have worked well like but like worked with Brian Taylor on Ghost Rider. He's just like, yeah, I'll freak out for you guys for you again.
Chris Prime: And I do enjoy the message. I like that this is a very different movie than a typical like horror movie. It's got more family...
Chris Prime: you know, connections and, and like, you see like where this movie could have been what without the freak out. Nick Cage is like, life isn't where he wants it to be. The family is sort of like spoiled and then questionable of like what ties them together as a family.
Chris Prime: But that gets like shelved for the last act. They're just like, all right, here comes the violence.
Zach Sheets: Oh man, this this is the year before Mandy came out?
Chris Prime: Cage. I guess this is like the return of Cage. Like he he was getting more mainstream stuff.
Zach Sheets: yeah because i mean Yeah, because he was in like the dregs for a while there. but Just doing like all those like like ridiculous directed video, like pay the ghost and all that crap.
Chris Prime: Yeah, this is like not full of crap in a Cage movie.
Chris Prime: And you think about it. 2000... two thousand like 14, 2017, this was the like, oh, he would just make DVD, like should do DVD movies up until like mom and dad, I think got like a limited release.
Zach Sheets: ah extremely extremely limited yeah you only made like like a quarter like a quarter of a million dollars
Chris Prime: And then, yeah, after that, after mom and dad, 2018 was Mandy,
Zach Sheets: well it's it's Mandy Spider-Verse ah Colorado of Space Prisoners of the Ghost Land like yeah we were like back in like Nicolas Cage's back baby
Chris Prime: Yeah.
Chris Prime: Yeah. like it's It's nice that basically the bounce back happened around that time. Of course, you know, the underbearable weight of massive talent is such a great Nick Cage movie.
Chris Prime: But it's nice that he's exactly who you want him to be in this movie. It wasn't
Zach Sheets: Yes.
Chris Prime: It was tastefully used. It's what you expect.
Zach Sheets: the him Him destroying a a pool table and like a ranting is an all-time Nichols Cage scene.
Zach Sheets: He's just like saying he's got like like cottage cheese belly and like butter coming out of his ears or whatever he's going while smashing a pool table.
Chris Prime: Hair out of his ears and nose, cat of she's thighs and like a blue bonnet stomach.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: Just aging. I feel like that was just Nick Cage. That's just Nick Cage ranting.
Chris Prime: Oh, yeah. Is there anything else you want to mention?
Zach Sheets: No, it was fun. I'm glad I finally saw it after, you know, almost 10 years.
Chris Prime: Yeah, yeah, I held off on it too, and think it's worth the wait.
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: It was exactly what I thought it'd be, but I think I see why it wasn't a general audience, because it just sort of ends on artsy note for what the ramp, the, like, escalation thing is.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, and it's it's it's not quite as, you know, there's other movies that probably do this kind of a similar thing better than this one, but like the crazies.
Chris Prime: I gotta see ah Rabies next to see how well they do a concept like that of a black comedy mortality in life. But that one's a traditional zombie movie.
Zach Sheets: is it Is Rabies like, it's like, is that David Cronenberg's first movie?
Chris Prime: No, no, no. i'm not It's like newer.
Zach Sheets: Oh, it's newer. OK.
Zach Sheets: i feel i feel like there was like that was like a.
Chris Prime: The one I'm thinking is the one with Elijah Wood and he's working at the day camp.
Zach Sheets: OK. Yeah. well actually, I think there's I think there's a lot of movies called rabies that are like like a bunch of random horror movies.
Zach Sheets: I feel like, yeah, what was... Oh, im I'm thinking of Shivers. That's the David Cronenberg one.
Zach Sheets: And it's like that's like a parasite that like gets into you and starts like doing horrible things.
Chris Prime: And the movie I'm thinking of is Cooties.
Zach Sheets: Okay, yeah.
Chris Prime: Which is also being recommended by 2B to me right now.
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm. I mean, Tubi has everything. ah just It's like secret the secretly the best streaming service.
Zach Sheets: You can just be like, oh it's not Tubi? Of course it is.
