Return from PAX East and Super Mario Bros. Movie Discussion
00:00:26
Zach Sheets
yeah Hello and welcome to the Everything Action Cast podcast week of March 30th, 2026. I'm your host, Zach.
00:00:32
Chris Prime
I'm your co-host Chris.
00:00:34
Zach Sheets
And yeah, we are back from PAX East. We attended that last week in Boston, but we're still in a gaming mindset because we are talking about the Super Mario Bros. movie this week because the Super Mario Galaxy movie is out if you're hearing this. I actually saw it. I saw it on Wednesday when it first came out and thought it was pretty fun.
00:00:54
Zach Sheets
just but Just like the the first one, which was a yo super fun kind of jam-packed full of references and Easter eggs, which is like kind of the main thing i think people are going to do these movies for.
Critical vs. Fan Reviews: Disney Standards vs. Nostalgia
00:01:05
Zach Sheets
not Not so much for the plot.
00:01:08
Chris Prime
Yeah, I think if you're looking for absolute cinema, it's not that. And I think the world needs to be fine with that idea. Because it's like, yeah, like even the critical reviews gave this movie low ratings and they probably gave the new movie lower ratings because they're comparing it to like a Disney movie, like a gold standard Disney movie. Like, it's not that like it's not.
00:01:33
Chris Prime
Like, it's weird because even when I think about this movie we're watching, this Morrow movie, it it, like, a lot of critics were just, like, shitting on it It's like... They couldn't like suspend their belief of of like this like franchise with such like long fandom like long history of fandoms. And then they're like, oh, what do you mean? It's not like mind-blowing about history and wars. It's not Doom. You know what I mean? like
00:01:59
Chris Prime
The level of fandoms of how inspirational Mario is, and then when regular people saw Mario, Super Mario movie, and they're like, I wasn't blown away. like i didn't It didn't change my world of plumbing or or other worlds.
00:02:14
Chris Prime
So it's just it's bizarre because that's like some of the critic reviews I read while like getting ready for this again. And even I remember like two, three years ago getting ready for that movie, getting ready for this movie.
00:02:26
Chris Prime
It just sort of brought me back to that mindset where they're like, for whatever reason, they just whenever they see some franchise that's like beloved, they're just like, we have to rank it as if it's like the Godfather.
00:02:37
Zach Sheets
Yeah, the gulf between critical reviews and like the fan reviews are is like crazy, especially for like Galaxy. think it's 43% on Rotten Tomatoes for critics for fans.
00:02:50
Chris Prime
Yeah, and that that's what this movie's made for.
00:02:55
Zach Sheets
yeah I feel like it's really similar to like the Five Nights at Freddy's movies. where like the like it's like Those are just jam-packed full of Easter eggs and references and stuff. And if you if you know them, you're like, oh, this is the best movie ever.
Movies for Entertainment: The Role of Nostalgia
00:03:06
Zach Sheets
And if you don't know them, you're like, all right, I don't i don't know what any of this is, so I hate this. And there's no plot. like i don't know.
00:03:13
Chris Prime
I mean, I looked up some things beforehand to understand the Friday Night's at Freddy's lore, and then you really don't need more than, like I don't know, the first two games to understand the movie, at least.
00:03:25
Chris Prime
And then, and don't know, Friday Night's at Freddy's, the lore is cool. like If they just took the time to plot it out better, I think I would like Friday Night's at Freddy's 1. But I enjoyed it. I didn't hate it.
00:03:40
Chris Prime
Until Dawn took that spot real quick for me. But... No, like, it this is something where this was not meant to be... Like, this is a popcorn movie.
00:03:51
Chris Prime
And it's... The next movie is another popcorn movie. And it's fine that there are movies that exist that are not supposed to, like, I don't know, last the test of time, maybe? don't
Musical References: 'Take On Me' and Audience Reception
00:04:03
Chris Prime
don't know. Do you think this movie is going to like, a timeless classic?
00:04:07
Chris Prime
me tell you, the musical score is not.
00:04:11
Zach Sheets
You mean like the like the soundtrack or the actual like score?
00:04:15
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I mean, because the soundtrack is just like very obvious needle drops.
00:04:21
Zach Sheets
So, I mean, you've heard a bunch of these songs in dozens of other movies.
00:04:26
Chris Prime
Yeah, even the soundtrack, you need to know who sang it to understand the reference.
00:04:32
Chris Prime
But a kid's not going to understand that. and In fact, I think a few people, this is the first time hearing like Beastie Boys or...
00:04:40
Zach Sheets
Bonnie Tyler or Aha.
00:04:44
Chris Prime
definitely. Ah-ha, definitely. like Take On Me is used as like iron ironic song these days.
00:04:50
Chris Prime
And even then, it's very selective just because... Unless you saw the music video, the Ah-ha song is kind of weird.
00:05:01
Chris Prime
because it's like take on me and then take me on. Like think about the lyrics and like how the context is to a freaking Donkey Kong level.
00:05:10
Zach Sheets
Yeah, like, yeah. What's the first thing you think about when you think of, you know, a jungle or carts, like
Mario Brothers in Brooklyn: Commercials and Plumbing Humor
00:05:16
Zach Sheets
cart racing? Oh, take on me.
00:05:19
Chris Prime
Which my mind, we grew up in that era where we saw the music video a lot on MTV or VH1. So it's the cartoon art of take on me. And then even then, it's it's just like falling in love. But sort of.
00:05:37
Chris Prime
don't know. I am like digging too deep in the lyrics of Take On Me. But.
00:05:41
Zach Sheets
Yeah. is even if Even if you dig deep into it, it has nothing to do with jungles or monkeys or Mario cards.
00:05:45
Chris Prime
It has nothing to do Jungle. Like that that's. not
00:05:48
Chris Prime
See what I mean? Like that's where I'm like, why would they use it? And I guess because Universal is just sort of throwing everything they own at it. I'm surprised we didn't get a Minions cameo in this movie.
00:05:59
Zach Sheets
I mean, I think they appear don't they appear in like the emlu Illumination yeah. like logo
00:06:04
Chris Prime
Yeah, but that's just the logo. Like, that doesn't count.
00:06:05
Zach Sheets
this logo yeah
00:06:06
Chris Prime
You know, that that's just my as one saying I saw, like, you know...
00:06:10
Zach Sheets
The lamp in Pixar.
00:06:11
Chris Prime
Yeah, Laxail Jr.
00:06:14
Zach Sheets
Like Luxo Jr. or whatever his name is.
00:06:15
Chris Prime
is the the, like, the fabric of the Pixar multiverse.
00:06:20
Chris Prime
Wouldn't it would have be weird? Sorry, this is little side tangent, but wouldn't it be weird if the logos were actually part of the lore? So the logos tell, like, the story where it's like, this is a tale about this, and then...
00:06:33
Zach Sheets
Man, that was true. like All those like Chinese movies you watch her would just be like insanity. It's like...
00:06:38
Chris Prime
Well, some of the logos in those... See, like but that goes out of control. I grew i grew up in the era where the Chinese companies were like three at most, not the seven they do now. And I always thought like, okay, this is the production company, so that if you see this company, they always make these kind of movies.
00:06:56
Chris Prime
Which is true true to these days, right? Like in American movies, like if you see... like Usually if it's this production company, it's going to be this type of movie. Like, Like, it's always an action movie, or it's always a drama.
00:07:10
Chris Prime
But now it's like flip-bopping. Studios just sort of make whatever, just kind of follow trends.
00:07:15
Zach Sheets
it's like that a family guy joke where it's like that the movie theater are like trying trying to figure out when the movie actually starts it's like oh no it's another production logo
Fan Connection: The Nintendo Logo Reaction
00:07:23
Chris Prime
Well, let tell you, when I saw this movie theaters, as soon as they had the Nintendo things, people were just like standing up, cheering, you know, like kids were screaming, which eight o'clock screening and there was a kid there. And i was like, this is either good parents or bad parents.
00:07:40
Zach Sheets
yeah the the the official Nintendo Productions logo.
00:07:44
Chris Prime
The first time they ever seen it, right? it's the first official Nintendo thing.
00:07:48
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm. Because Because definitely was not on the 1993 movie.
00:07:53
Chris Prime
It probably was and they burnt it they're like we can never let anyone know.
00:07:58
Zach Sheets
Which, yeah, it was 30 years until, like, the the point when, like, the, you know, Super Mario Bros. movie came out, when the original one came out. So it's just like...
00:08:10
Zach Sheets
I think so. I want to why they're trying to so throw so much, like, you know all the soundtrack stuff and, like, just trying to cram everything into this this one. Because if this one failed again, it would be like they're like one shot. It's like we have one shot to, like, bring Super Mario Bros. back to theaters.
Content Overload: Avoiding a Flop
00:08:28
Chris Prime
In another world, in another galaxy, therere probably this movie probably did bomb.
00:08:28
Zach Sheets
it's it's it's It's been 30 years.
00:08:33
Chris Prime
Just because they changed something. you know They probably did something crazy and they're like, we can never make movies again. howl it it just I know it's good that they didn't because they worked with another studio. They worked with Universal to figure out how to make a movie and not just say, fuck it, we'll do it ourselves.
00:08:55
Zach Sheets
Yeah, and and not now hire however many directors there were on the live-action one and then like have no hands-off. Just be like hands off it like, yeah, sure, we trust you. Go make it.
00:09:06
Chris Prime
Yep, I think that's smart.
00:09:07
Zach Sheets
Although it is it is There is some weird similarities where, like, it like you do you can see, like, the Mario Bros. in Brooklyn at the beginning and the end, and the end, like, fight takes place in Brooklyn.
00:09:22
Chris Prime
Well, okay, they also need to show the... i Yeah, it's... Well, it's it's symbolism. It's also thematic. So the beginning is where it ends and ends at the beginning.
00:09:33
Chris Prime
But it's also showing them that they are truly the Super Mario Brothers and all their naysayers are just quietly like silent. But they also make it that the Mario Brothers are like not normal size.
00:09:52
Chris Prime
Like they're all short or like apparently there's something like not
00:09:53
Zach Sheets
Yeah, they're very short. Yeah,
00:09:58
Chris Prime
they're They're just, like, not little people, but just, don't know, Mario's the size of, like, a middle schooler, I guess?
Mario's Family: Portrayal and Dynamics
00:10:07
Zach Sheets
yeah because like because Spike... Foreman Spike from Wrecking Crew like is able to like pick up all my suspenders and hang him there. And he's like a giant compared to him. Compared to Mario. Yeah.
00:10:20
Chris Prime
uh... I just think it'd be funny if it's like if other humanoid characters were there to to kind of give a scale because like spikes the like I don't he's like macho man size in this world.
00:10:40
Zach Sheets
Yeah, he's pretty big. then But then like the character that Charles Martinet voices is like, he looks like Mario and Luigi sized.
00:10:48
Zach Sheets
And Mario and Mario's family is all and they're like families all like their size.
00:10:54
Chris Prime
So don't know. I just feel like it it, they really want to just kind of make sure like establish that Mario isn't regular here, but in another world with the right conditions, he's like awesome there.
00:11:09
Chris Prime
But it's, it's again, it's the, it's showing people that, you know, you fit in, in the musher kingdom or you fit in, you, you find your, your, your like true calling and another like reality, which,
00:11:23
Chris Prime
not sure that's a good message or a bad message.
Belonging in Different Worlds: Comparisons with Fiction
00:11:26
Chris Prime
It's sort of how I felt about the last Starfighter when it's like, oh, he's terrible here, but in space, he's awesome.
00:11:32
Zach Sheets
Yeah. You gotta leave the planet to become like the best version of yourself. There's nothing for you on Earth.
00:11:40
Chris Prime
Yeah, i see? like That's where I'm like, oh, it's not even the, okay, it the power was in you all along. This was, you literally have to move there.
00:11:49
Zach Sheets
And you literally need like power you need like a powerful you need like a special power.
00:11:51
Chris Prime
We need drugs.
00:11:54
Chris Prime
No, no. Drugs. You need an enhancing booth that doesn't give you the ability unless you are on it and it doesn't last forever. That is called a drug.
00:12:06
Chris Prime
but It's dark. once It's dark when you break down, which I think that's what like I'm a little cynical about it because I was reading some reviews that were like really digging deep and I'm like, what? Can I just see like you know the mountain for the mountain and not that it's just a pile of dirt?
00:12:21
Zach Sheets
I feel like that's always been kind of like a Mario thing where people are commenting like, isn't it weird they eat mushrooms, man? Like... Mushrooms are the power-ups.
00:12:32
Zach Sheets
And then there's all the different crazy mushrooms. Mushrooms? Yep. all the different crazy mushrooms
00:12:39
Chris Prime
No, I think what's crazy is that the Mushroom Kingdom people are mushroom people, but then they produce power-ups that are mushroom-based, and then other realities in the world also use mushrooms and other power-ups.
00:12:55
Zach Sheets
Well, I mean, the original game was even more disturbing. Like, if you read, like, the manual for the original game, it's like, Bowser turned turned them all turned turned all the residents into blocks.
00:13:00
Chris Prime
Oh, the block.
00:13:03
Zach Sheets
So Mario's, like, smashing blocks that were, like, formerly mushroom people.
00:13:08
Zach Sheets
And, like, killing them.
Mushroom Kingdom Oddities: Sentient Mushrooms
00:13:09
Chris Prime
if you think about the live-action movie did that right because the king was giving them power-ups, that's how it explains it.
00:13:15
Chris Prime
It's very, like, Cronenberg of what they were doing in the original, but in here, they're just like, i don't know, like, this world, you just have power-ups.
00:13:18
Zach Sheets
Oh, yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:13:24
Chris Prime
Don't worry about it. But oh my were I just couldn't figure out how the kingdoms and this planet work just because... You have to sometimes hi the you have to take the rainbow road to get to the fastest, but how vast is this planet that but like you have like all these terrains?
00:13:43
Zach Sheets
Yeah, and it's it's just it's just one planet, because they're all in the same whatever planet or world that the Mushroom Kingdom is on. It's the same world as the Jungle Kingdom that the Kongs are on
00:13:55
Zach Sheets
We're not even traveling to other galaxies and planets like in the the new one.
00:14:00
Chris Prime
No, I get it. It's each kingdom, and Bowser doesn't really have his own since it's a floating city, so he doesn't have his own kingdom, I guess?
00:14:08
Zach Sheets
And he's conquer he's been conquering the other... like we In the opening of the movie, we see him conquer like the I guess the ice kingdom or the penguin kingdom.
00:14:16
Chris Prime
I know has a name, we just aren't too familiar, because I think Super Mario 64 introduced it to us.
00:14:23
Zach Sheets
The penguins.
00:14:24
Chris Prime
Yeah, that whole Ice Kingdom level.
Bowser's Character Evolution: From Intimidating to Comedic
00:14:27
Zach Sheets
Oh, i don't I don't even think they were like a kingdom though. They were just like, it was just like, Oh, it's a frozen place. And there's like these mama penguin with her penguins babies. Like you like race them and stuff. There was like a penguin king or anything anything like in this movie. Yeah.
00:14:39
Chris Prime
Yeah, yeah, that's true. Well,
00:14:42
Zach Sheets
Which we said is that is a fun opening. I enjoy like the when like the penguins come out and they seem like they're like super badass and then it's like you just cut it's like like undercutting them by like just cutting like showing the wide shot I'm just like throwing snowballs at Bowser and he might even do anything. Just like alright.
00:15:00
Zach Sheets
And I do like the how they make Bowser like actually like pretty intimidating in the opening and then kind of as as the movie goes on you kind of reveal his like goofiness. The Jack Black goofiness.
00:15:12
Chris Prime
Yeah, it definitely went through the errors of different Bowser things. I remember in, like, leading up to Mario 64, Bowser wasn't, like, goofy. You know, he didn't have a lot of character development. He was just there, you beat him, you moved on.
00:15:29
Chris Prime
And then post-Mario 64, and kind of toning him down and making him, you know, be like a fumbling enemy now. cause you don't get that from the first iterations of Bowser.
00:15:44
Chris Prime
Even in the original game like n NES game where he didn't have like hair.
00:15:50
Zach Sheets
i feel like, what would you say, like Super Mario RPG is probably the first time you actually had like like a personality?
00:15:55
Chris Prime
oh yeah, you're right. That came before 64. Yeah,
00:15:57
Zach Sheets
And he and and the and he they became like you're like your you know your ally because there's something bigger like someone bigger and better than him so he had to team up with you.
00:16:04
Chris Prime
yeah yeah. You know what it is I played... RPG way after the 64 just because I didn't own a Super NES until way later and then it was just like a retro replay of like okay should I try this and I i love Mario 64 it's such a shame that that like for a while is the only time you could play it was on like the original hardware
00:16:29
Chris Prime
you're right that's where they made him goofy Because he was always like mad and he couldn't do things and stuff. But I also didn't use him on a lot of my party. I was all about like the the cloud dude. It was all about like Marshmallow or whatever his name is.
00:16:41
Zach Sheets
Mellow, yeah.
00:16:42
Chris Prime
Mallow, yeah. And Geno.
00:16:45
Chris Prime
And once you have those two guys, I'm like, why am I using Bowser?
00:16:48
Zach Sheets
When are they going show up in in one of these movies?
00:16:51
Zach Sheets
I'm surprised there wasn't like a rough like like just like in a background or
Peach's Strong Character: Influences from Manga
00:16:54
Zach Sheets
something like of them.
00:16:55
Zach Sheets
Maybe there is, i't but I haven't noticed it yet. so
00:16:59
Chris Prime
It's like a rewatch to watch like Gino's foot or something. Just I know that foot.
00:17:06
Chris Prime
What do you think about? What do you think about the use of like Peach as the like she's from Earth, but not really like we don't know yet.
00:17:24
Zach Sheets
Yeah, she's from somewhere. she's not She's not from the Mushroom Kingdom. She's from somewhere else and she ended up there.
00:17:32
Chris Prime
So it just it gave me like flashbacks to the original Mario where it's like Daisy again, where it's like Daisy was part of this alternate reality where dinosaurs ruled the earth. Like, oh, oh, boy.
00:17:44
Chris Prime
Are we to merge realities?
00:17:47
Zach Sheets
Well, i yeah, I like Peach and the both and both the movies. And we were talking before we started recording, like this version of Peach where she's like this like like badass and like a fighter and like not taking anything from anybody is like, really reminds me of the Peach from the, well, I think it was a is a manga published in Japan and then Nintendo Power like translated it and put published it in like a bunch of issues back in the day.
00:18:14
Zach Sheets
And it's like, yeah, Peach just like in there. She's almost like psychotic at how bad as she is because she's like going like beating everyone up and like pulling out bombs and like beating up all the Koopa kids. And like she's like doing everything.
00:18:30
Zach Sheets
like that was not like a surprise to me in like the movie because I was like, oh, that's like that's comic. That's like manga beach. That's fun.
00:18:40
Chris Prime
I think this the trailers kind of threw me off on that. I also... I grew up reading the Valant Entertainment Comics version where Peach was more just like what you think of the game, but closer to, I guess, like a balance of the games and then the cartoon show where she was helping, but she was complaining.
00:19:04
Chris Prime
But yeah, to watch her basically be... Her own superstar character is nice. I like that balance. So when she's just like, oh, you know, I i live here. My world is constantly like wacky. know, like I have to defend myself. i'm not just going to sit here and let like not be skilled.
00:19:22
Chris Prime
But she's also like the tallest person in her kingdom.
00:19:26
Zach Sheets
And like when Mario is struggling at the training course, it's like, oh yeah, i've i like like I did a first try. like
00:19:36
Zach Sheets
but also like also, I'm sure sure is she's done it 100 times since then, and just crushes like you know crushes it
00:19:41
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's just effortless effortlessly for her to do
Mario's Humorous Struggles in the Mushroom Kingdom
00:19:44
Zach Sheets
Well, it's kind it's kind of odd because there's that No Sleeps of Brooklyn wonder where like Mario's like actually like doing parkour down the street. It's showing, like oh, he actually is like pretty good at platforming and parkouring.
00:20:01
Chris Prime
But that goes out the window.
00:20:02
Zach Sheets
then he's just like, yeah, I guess the mushroom game is like, oh, he's hilariously terrible at it.
00:20:07
Chris Prime
I think that subverts it because you think it's gonna be good. Like he's gonna be as good as you think. And then reality sets in where it's not the same. i kind of like that idea where they give you a little preview.
00:20:22
Chris Prime
You think, okay, that explains his parkour skills. So he's gonna be prepared. And then he's just side swipe from basically the harsh reality of the Mushroom Kingdom that it's not like just the same, you know?
00:20:37
Zach Sheets
even Even with the power-ups, he's still so so like struggling at it.
00:20:41
Chris Prime
Well, okay, it seems that they kept giving him just the mushroom power-up. They really should just introduce him to more. Because he is just, like, flabbergasted. You know all how I mean? Like... He's going to be thrown into this world that everyone knows he's an outsider of, right?
00:20:58
Chris Prime
And then they should go, okay, well, let's get a collection of these things. Have you, like, try it. You know, like it's like when a weapons get like scene in any kind of thing where they kind of load him up.
00:21:07
Chris Prime
It's like, here, here's this gun. It's like, are you familiar with this? Yeah, okay, what about this? No, and then they, like, introduce this thing. They really were just like, i don't know, eat this and see what happens.
00:21:18
Zach Sheets
Well, i think i mean and they're I mean, they're also playing on the running joke of this this Mario hates mushrooms. Yeah.
00:21:25
Chris Prime
Yeah, yeah. That's funny.
00:21:28
Zach Sheets
we just I gotta to eat this mushroom? Aww.
Chris Pratt as Mario: Voice and Character Adaptation
00:21:31
Zach Sheets
Oh, which we haven't mentioned yet, but like, what like what did you think about Chris Pratt's voice or like his performance? Because it's like, the first couple minutes of it, I'm like, oh boy. and but then like you get used to it after the first couple minutes like and and you're not really bothered by it anymore.
00:21:47
Chris Prime
Yeah, I mean.
00:21:47
Zach Sheets
You guys just have to be like, all right, it's not Charles Martinet. It's not, he's not going to a wahooing and doing it. Like, it's just going be like chris kind of Chris Pratt with like a slight, very, very slight, subtle Italian accents.
00:22:00
Chris Prime
I mean, yeah, I wouldn't say like accent.
00:22:01
Zach Sheets
i mean, maybe not even an accents. Mm-hmm.
00:22:05
Chris Prime
Accent implies that he's like spent time in Italy.
00:22:13
Chris Prime
If anything, this is just like he's making fun of his like his family. who have way more of a Brooklyn Italian accent, sometimes Chicago accent mixed in there.
00:22:25
Zach Sheets
like Like Charlie Day, perfect Luigi.
00:22:27
Chris Prime
Yeah, high pitch. What do you think Luigi would sound like? But not the like. I don't know, like tone down Luigi voice that I'm used to.
00:22:39
Chris Prime
Like, especially in like the Mario Party games or. i don't know, like yeah it definitely isn't. He's not supposed to be deep Luigi. It's definitely just he has a great.
00:22:54
Zach Sheets
And yeah they also, they they give you the like classic Mario voices right away, but it's like the parody, like the Mario rap commercial they make.
00:23:05
Zach Sheets
It's plumbing It's like their personas for like, hey, we're the Italian plumbers! Mm-hmm.
00:23:15
Chris Prime
i mean, to be fair, if I were to choose a plumber, I would have gotten them. You know what mean? Like, but thing is, I grew up in Brooklyn and you didn't want more of a crazy Brooklyn person coming to your house because you want to make sure they understand your instructions and your, like,
00:23:35
Chris Prime
your you like thing about your home. Okay, we're going to get into this. So... You know that scene that has nothing to do of any of the greater lore of where they go to someone's house and actually do a plumbing gig?
00:23:50
Zach Sheets
i I was just going to mention it. like yeah The one time they go do a plumbing job, it's like they cause like hundreds dollars damage. Maybe thousands dollars damage.
00:23:59
Chris Prime
Eh, it seems like they fixed it, but they broke like a lot of their furnishings. So... it's like hiring Borat to come to your home.
00:24:09
Chris Prime
Like an Italian Borat. That's what I'm like, this is what happens when you, when you like hired from a TV ad. Mind you, it seems like this movie takes place in modern times.
Mario and Luigi's Plumbing Gig: Humor and Implications
00:24:19
Chris Prime
So it's not even like a timepiece where a TV ad is the make it or break it thing for your business. Like, do they even have like a website?
00:24:29
Zach Sheets
I think there was. like then there was like But I think that was more of like a marketing for like us at home. i'm Like, hey, go to smbplumbing.com and it's a special site for the movie. like we They had like a website, but I don't know what that would be in the world of the movie.
00:24:44
Chris Prime
But in that world, it the TV ad was so vital for their business. And it worked on this posh-y family, this posh-y New York family.
00:24:54
Zach Sheets
And they spent their entire life savings on it. is like what they mentioned.
00:25:01
Zach Sheets
Which, I mean, that was a pretty low-budget commercial. I don't know how much money they spent or how much money they... like They're not good with finances, I guess. this
00:25:09
Chris Prime
So, yeah, yeah, that's what I'm saying. Like, and then they do that much damage. And then that's why you don't hire the like kooky commercial ad people. understand if they actually were.
00:25:22
Zach Sheets
say Do you think they hired someone you think they filmed it all themselves?
00:25:25
Chris Prime
no, no. no I'm saying like the, the like people who hire the plumbers.
00:25:30
Zach Sheets
Oh, okay, yeah.
00:25:32
Chris Prime
No, they, they probably did low budget themselves. So, you know, that, that I got, but I'm saying,
00:25:39
Chris Prime
What did you expect from hiring those people on the low? It's like hiring, you know, Tim and Eric characters to come to your home. And then they're like, they they do like a three stooges skit inside of like your bathroom.
00:25:50
Zach Sheets
You think people are disappointed if they don't have the Italian accents? Like the Italian accents?
00:25:55
Chris Prime
Dude, it's like going to Moe's and not getting a welcome to Moe's when you enter that burrito place. So if you imagine hiring the commercials and then it's like, oh, no, we we don't do that.
00:26:07
Zach Sheets
that's just for commercials say the thing say the thing it's a me
00:26:09
Chris Prime
We're actually Polish. Yeah, no.
00:26:14
Chris Prime
Okay, I think in your area, do you still have the, like, carpet cleaner guy that kind of looks like Stan Lee?
00:26:21
Zach Sheets
think i might have seen those commercials yeah
00:26:23
Chris Prime
I think that guy passed away, so now he's just like a CGI spoke mascot now. But I would fucking lose my mind if I had my carpet cleaning and that dude showed up at my house.
00:26:35
Chris Prime
You know, i'll have I'll leave like a glowing ass like review online on Google or something where just like he comes to your home now. Like, it's not just like he's just the spokesman. Like he was the owner or whatever, but he comes to your home.
00:26:49
Chris Prime
I don't know about you. Again, i'm just looking too into this at a New York thing because it was like hard to meet someone on TV come to your home back then. You know?
00:27:01
Chris Prime
So I'm just like, hey, aren't you that like mean? You know me? Like, you imagine if it like
00:27:04
Zach Sheets
you're You're real? You're a real person?
00:27:06
Chris Prime
Yeah, you're not just, yeah, you know what I mean?
00:27:06
Zach Sheets
You're not just a TV character?
00:27:08
Chris Prime
Like, you don't really get service like that. You know, I got a, can imagine if it was like a Comcast guy or some, like, cable service, and it's a very low-budget operation where it's like, I'll fix your TV, and it's like, think sent him or some other dude, and then the dude shows up, and i'm like holy shit, I'm gonna put you on TikTok or something.
00:27:29
Chris Prime
I mean, now more so, just because in this reality, an invading entity, like, turtle monster showed up, and Mario punched it so hard it just became a little. So... Like, now he's like a famous Earth protector now.
00:27:47
Zach Sheets
but Like, Mario Spiller for Galaxy, they they do not go back to Brooklyn, so we have no idea what the hell is going on in Brooklyn anymore.
00:27:51
Chris Prime
Yeah, what happened to that world?
00:27:53
Chris Prime
So... But yeah, no, that's I'm like, it starts very like funny in that it becomes a Three Stooges thing with parkouring. And then it just turns into a Mario movie.
00:28:04
Chris Prime
Like an adventure Mario comic.
00:28:07
Chris Prime
Yeah, but I had to get into that because I was thinking, huh. Would would it, like, did no one watch the commercial? Did some people not watch the commercial? But if your gimmick thing is this gimmick and people hire you for the gimmick, lean into the gimmick. That's what's going to make you the money.
00:28:23
Chris Prime
Wear the cape. Wrap when you pipe or something.
00:28:28
Zach Sheets
Like, your van should play them like the, so like, that being in the Super Mario rap, or, like, the Super Mario theme or something.
Mario Bros' Commercial: Comedic Impact and Virality
00:28:34
Chris Prime
Well, it's funny that their van also doesn't work. It's just like they're so broke that their work van is just not great.
00:28:40
Zach Sheets
Like, the horn should be, like, a, like, a, know how people have, like, like the Dukes Hazzard horn? But there should be, like, they like, da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da.
00:28:49
Chris Prime
It'd be funny if they actually did like have... they they they they For whatever reason, they have that music. And it's like, this song is insanely catchy. How are you guys not just songwriters? Then why are you plumbers?
00:29:01
Zach Sheets
Yeah, because in the in the in the universe of this movie, they created the Mario rap. They came up with that song. It wasn't from like a a Captain Little Bano show. It was like they made it.
00:29:11
Chris Prime
Yeah, I mean, think about this. How catchy was the like 1-800-CARS-4-KIDS song? That's that's a goddamn earworm in our reality.
00:29:19
Chris Prime
Now you imagine the guys who did that are also like goddamn like under kingdom protectors?
00:29:25
Chris Prime
Like, we'll blow our minds.
00:29:29
Zach Sheets
it is is It is surprising that the Mario Bros. aren't like viral. but People are posting on YouTube and being like, look at these guys' commercial! It's so shitty!
00:29:36
Chris Prime
That's what i was Now you understand it? Like, that's where I'm kind of getting to the point where I'm like think about how weird it is in our society now when we see kooky stuff that's like, you're not going forget that.
00:29:38
Zach Sheets
Yeah.............
00:29:47
Chris Prime
Like, the ad was pretty funny, even though it's like, was this intentional? Or like, they purposely did like meta jokes in it. i If I saw the commercial, it would brighten me up.
00:29:58
Chris Prime
you know like That's such a fun commercial today where everything is AI generated or terrible.
00:30:03
Chris Prime
like Why would they put all this effort to like make an animation for like some sort of pill?
00:30:11
Chris Prime
you know I'm talking about also where you you pointed out there was a pharmaceutical ad and anime themed and had nothing to do with the people in the anime.
00:30:18
Zach Sheets
Yeah, there's some like MS drug that is like two separate... like and It's just like an anime sequence, and it has nothing to do with anything about the the pill or the drug or whatever. anything It's just like it's like anime action sequence.
00:30:33
Chris Prime
And then it's just like, buy this medicine. you're Like, what is this?
00:30:36
Chris Prime
But at least the Mario one was a very like, hey, we will fix your thing only in Brooklyn and Queens because that's our territory and we are like affordable. I know that from the ad.
00:30:47
Chris Prime
And like I was like, okay.
00:30:47
Zach Sheets
Please, we need money.
00:30:50
Chris Prime
But, you know, modern day plumbing, people learn not to like clog their s sink and also, i don't know, get a hair drain. That's like 80% of plumbing problems in like most bathrooms.
00:31:01
Chris Prime
do not try to fly like Do not try to put like stomp down hair down a drain. Because then you'll need Drano. And then plumbers hate Drano.
00:31:09
Chris Prime
Again, as someone that lived in Brooklyn who played Mario stuff...
00:31:17
Chris Prime
It's the same thing we talked about with TMMT. like I lived through this weird era where like it was just New York cranking out heroes and and like stories. And it's like... As a kid, we had Spider-Man, the Turtles, Mario, got like a how many other handful of like New York based characters that are just like.
00:31:38
Chris Prime
we We all have day jobs are like we we do other things.
00:31:44
Chris Prime
But yeah, like.
00:31:48
Zach Sheets
that was i said So the one thing that is kind of like but one of my main complaints with this movie or like nitpicks is like Mario and Luigi get separated for like puring the entire movie.
00:32:00
Chris Prime
Yeah, they're not really like the brothers in the beginning like they show you. it's Maybe they're together for like 25 minutes total.
00:32:08
Zach Sheets
because there's the whole Because there's a whole thing of like, oh, if if we're together, nothing can happen can like happen to us. But then...
00:32:12
Chris Prime
But and that's that's plot like problems. If they are together, then like the movie won't go on. They'll solve everything.
00:32:18
Zach Sheets
But then... Yeah, but then Luigi gets sucked into like the Dark Lands and ends up in... like I guess kind of like a tea like this like like a little bit of a tease of what a Luigi's Mansion movie might be cause he ends up in like the like creepy castle.
00:32:32
Zach Sheets
But then it's but it's weird because it's not booze, it's like shy guys that capture him. I kind wish it was booze to be like, hey, Luigi's Mansion maybe someday. and And I do like the dry bones are just like as as like zombies and like chasing him.
00:32:50
Zach Sheets
But then Luigi gets thrown in a cage and Luigi's in a cage for like the entire movie.
00:32:57
Zach Sheets
Which I will say in Galaxy, like they are the movie they're they're like together for the entire movie. Galaxy fixes that part that that but bit.
00:33:04
Chris Prime
Yeah, I mean, i can leave or take it, Luigi. You don't always need to be the brothers together because when you play the game, you don't play both of them.
00:33:14
Chris Prime
If they were together, it'd be more like Super Mario, like, what was that?
00:33:19
Zach Sheets
Was like Superstars or like like the DS games?
00:33:20
Chris Prime
Superstars, yeah. I think Snoopy Star started on the Advance first.
00:33:27
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I think so. Probably, yeah.
00:33:29
Chris Prime
So... That's where I'm talking... Like, that was, okay, the dynamic of them working together. Because I think in Super Mario RPG, you think Luigi's not there.
00:33:39
Zach Sheets
Oh, no. no he's I mean, yeah. i'm sure I'm sure he's twice somewhere in there, but yeah, he's not like, he doesn't join your partner anything.
00:33:46
Chris Prime
He's not in your party. Yeah.
00:33:48
Chris Prime
So that's on, like, the dynamic of showing them what they're actually brotherly
Mario and Luigi's Relationship: Portrayal and Significance
00:33:52
Chris Prime
like. I vividly remember was Super Mario star Superstars. And that was that was because you couldn't get any more, like, party members. was just them.
00:34:01
Chris Prime
So you just have to get used to that.
00:34:05
Zach Sheets
And then them and like their, the the baby thems.
00:34:08
Chris Prime
i think that was the sequel or the third game.
00:34:12
Chris Prime
But either way. Yeah, like it's becoming more like that, where the adventure is now them, but like bumbling together. but and And fine. That's why I don't mind that Luigi is not really in it with Mario for a while, just because you need to establish just how kooky everything is alone.
00:34:31
Chris Prime
But it's also weird because Luigi doesn't have any like peach character to get him used to the world, maybe.
00:34:39
Zach Sheets
Yeah, he doesn't get any sort of... Because Mario's getting all this training, and he's learning about the power-ups, he's learning about about the world, and he's just like in a cage just being like, well, I'm going to die.
00:34:48
Chris Prime
Yeah. It's pretty dark for his perspective.
00:34:51
Zach Sheets
Especially when you got that, like, the weird, like, nihilistic Luma, just like, yep, we're all gonna die.
00:34:59
Chris Prime
That's inevitable.
00:35:01
Chris Prime
But it's just weird because Mario got all that training so he gets platforming and whatnot. Luigi gets like sort of like a scared but he gets like a cheat but he's just as good as Mario.
00:35:17
Zach Sheets
Yeah, like the their yeah their their brother their brotherly powers like the superstar.
00:35:21
Chris Prime
but They did like a knowledge transfer. Luigi just like absorbed the like last four days of combat.
00:35:33
Zach Sheets
is like you just When you get the superstar, you're just like you get you become like incredibly incredibly awesome and like your skills are leveled up.
00:35:40
Chris Prime
Yeah, I guess you just.
00:35:41
Zach Sheets
You become like a super Saiyan.
00:35:42
Chris Prime
But you had to be good already, like agile. So then when you get the powers, you're just better.
00:35:48
Zach Sheets
Which in that Brooklyn scene, he was not. like he's barely He barely like makes it through like on foot to where wherever they're going. like He's out of breath. like He doesn't do any of the jumping around.
00:36:01
Zach Sheets
so you yeah even Even with the powers, I don't know how Luigi would do...
00:36:07
Chris Prime
I mean you saw the sequel. Does it just sort of... He's just as good as Mario?
00:36:12
Zach Sheets
Yeah, there's there's kind of just like you know they've been in the Buster Kingdom for a while now, so they both are used to it.
00:36:18
Chris Prime
Gotcha. Alright. I mean, I just want to make sure that's sort of, like... Weird, right? Like, at least in the original, they both got sucked down the drain and they both got the training at the same time.
00:36:30
Chris Prime
It's not like one was like, okay, get me later.
00:36:33
Chris Prime
so You know what I'm surprised they didn't do? They didn't try to do the Mario Brothers game. Like the original one. Where was just the one they go back and forth like a puzzle game more.
00:36:49
Chris Prime
And they had to hit the PAL. I'm surprised they didn't do that.
Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Game-like Nostalgia
00:36:56
Zach Sheets
I mean, we do get some like girders like when they end up when they end up in the Jungle Kingdom. because they get they get they have to go and it like The big driving thing for like the middle of the movie is that is like Peach and Toad and Mario have to go recruit the Kongs because the Kongs have like a bigger army so they can help them fight fight bowser But then Mario has to fight Donkey Kong in like, basic it's basically like a Smash Brothers arena. It's like a Smash Brothers stage. and But it has all like the Donkey Kong girders and stuff in it.
00:37:25
Zach Sheets
Along with like like like you know the bricks and the blocks and everything.
00:37:30
Zach Sheets
And i feel like I feel like in the the Brooklyn scene too, Mario jumps on like an old school Donkey Kong girder too.
00:37:38
Chris Prime
Yeah, that's true. don't just like... I didn't play the original Mario Bros. game until way later also. So by the time I like went back in the game history, i was like, okay, let me try like where it started. Or at least the idea of post-Donkey Kong.
00:37:57
Chris Prime
Where Mario became his own like very established character.
00:38:02
Zach Sheets
pretty sure i'm sure I'm pretty sure there's like a power block in like the background or something somewhere.
00:38:06
Zach Sheets
Because there's there's so much stuff to jam into the backgrounds and like on the sides of like every scene in this movie.
00:38:14
Chris Prime
Yeah, but like when's the last time you played the original Mario Bros. game?
00:38:17
Zach Sheets
Oh, like it's been probably years.
00:38:21
Zach Sheets
It might have been like a convention, maybe like an actual arcade version. I'm going to play it there, but.
00:38:25
Chris Prime
yeah Yeah, I think that's like the best way to play it.
00:38:29
Chris Prime
I mean, I think the new Super Mario Wonder sort of has like a little bit of that mold mold where you like can run around and sort of survive like a challenge level.
00:38:38
Zach Sheets
Oh, yeah, that that one that one stage you play at PAX where it's like you have knock the people into the ceiling.
00:38:43
Zach Sheets
and there's like tons of power blocks.
00:38:45
Chris Prime
It's sort of like a take on the original Mario Bros. mechanic.
00:38:50
Chris Prime
But other than that, if you're not playing with friends, it's not like, well, time to relax with... like 50 levels of Mario Bros.
00:39:00
Chris Prime
Okay, so do you want to get into the whole Donkey Kong that just now just Seth Rogen Kong?
00:39:08
Zach Sheets
Yeah, it is it is. I feel like it's an odd choice. Because Seth Rogen's not doing anything different. He's just like, it's just a it's me, Seth Rogen. I'm Donkey Kong now.
00:39:20
Chris Prime
It's funny because the whole gimmick of their thing is to get their army just so they can get to the stores of Bowser. And it just becomes like Seth Rogen jokes and no longer the Donkey Kong image of what we think in, I don't know, Donkey Kong Country or any of the Donkey Kong games. It literally just like Seth Rogen is this big Donkey Kong and the it's like they hired him just so he can do a Seth Rogen laugh.
00:39:53
Zach Sheets
Pretty much, yeah.
00:39:55
Chris Prime
Which, it took me out of the movie a little bit.
00:39:56
Zach Sheets
edit it And it's also odd that Kong Society is based around like carts. just it's It's just to have Mario carts. Yeah.
00:40:06
Chris Prime
Yeah, but I couldn't figure out they mastered cars?
00:40:09
Zach Sheets
Yeah, that's their whole their whole society is bananas and cars.
00:40:14
Chris Prime
And they're like equal equal friendly because they don't have gas. But they will like the carts will explode if it hits something hard enough.
00:40:25
Chris Prime
What's combustible in those carts? what's
00:40:28
Zach Sheets
what what Whatever, like, fruits they're, like, fermenting to make their fuel or their whatever they're doing.
00:40:34
Chris Prime
They're fermenting banana into a gas?
00:40:39
Zach Sheets
But yeah, i the Mario Donkey Kong fight's fun. Mario gets the cat suit from 3D World. which that this The thing about this movie, too, is that there's a good mix of old-school power-ups and like like newer power-ups.
00:40:56
Zach Sheets
Because you got the cat suit from like one the newest newer games, but then you know later on you get the tanuki suit from 3. And it's kind of like all the references. There's like there's like a good mix of references from like the earlier games and then some of the newer games.
00:41:12
Zach Sheets
and then But then the Galaxy the the galaxy movie is like obviously it's named Galaxy, so it's like tons of Galaxy, but also lot of Odyssey too.
Mario Kart Sequence: Mad Max and Creative Design
00:41:21
Zach Sheets
And some sunshine.
00:41:24
Zach Sheets
so that's like the Mario Galaxy movie is a lot more like the the newer games.
00:41:32
Zach Sheets
And then the whole Mario Kart sequence is is is pretty funny. even though it's It kind of feels like mad like they're trying to do like a Mad Max thing.
00:41:41
Chris Prime
Yeah, I think that was kind of like anytime modern day you have a scene with a whole bunch of vehicles driving together in a horde.
00:41:49
Zach Sheets
like It's like, did everyone see Fury Road?
00:41:49
Chris Prime
People think Mad Max.
00:41:52
Zach Sheets
Good, because now we're doing Mario Kart Fury Road.
00:41:55
Chris Prime
But they weren't like they weren't doing the typical Fury Road like trying to take down a caravan like wide terrain. It was just, okay, well one side has vastly better technology even though the one side made like kid idea of, like, weapons.
00:42:15
Chris Prime
understand why the the Donkey Kongs didn't also just make a, um... a,
00:42:21
Chris Prime
don't know, a little bit of a weaponry on their end.
00:42:24
Zach Sheets
like Like, why aren't they using, like, bullet bills?
00:42:26
Chris Prime
Well, bullet pills always the weapons of the bad guy.
00:42:29
Chris Prime
So I get why they don't use it.
00:42:30
Zach Sheets
i Like, the the Kongs have, like like, a shell cannon and then, like, a banana peel shooter.
00:42:38
Zach Sheets
and But then also, like, barrel rockets.
00:42:42
Chris Prime
don't know, like a passive army?
00:42:45
Zach Sheets
I don't know why a lot of them have more barrel rockets because that seems like the most effective weapon. Like Doc Young has these missiles on his cart.
00:42:56
Zach Sheets
but also But then but then like it's like a single shell can take out like four or five guys. so or you Or you just you know you jump from cart to cart and just snap on guy's head and turn him into a shell.
00:43:09
Chris Prime
Yeah, I mean, they're fighting against a society of people that if you like put enough pressure on their body, they just they morph into like a ball.
00:43:18
Zach Sheets
but They become a weapon that you can use.
00:43:19
Chris Prime
Oh, that... Select someone could be a weapon.
00:43:24
Chris Prime
It doesn't seem like all of them do that.
00:43:26
Zach Sheets
yeah i'm actually I'm actually kind of shocked that they didn't have Doof Warrior parody thing. like Have like a Koopa, a flaming car or something. guitar Koopa or something.
00:43:41
Chris Prime
Yeah, it would have been cool to see it, but then I would see like it doesn't age well just because it's such a direct parody. Like I said, like they wanted to make this movie kid-friendly, so kids won't get that completely.
00:43:55
Zach Sheets
Yeah. But they do have, like, like the the blue shell Koopa has, like, he basically kind of has, like, a war rig. Like, he has the big, like, semi-truck, like, cart.
00:44:05
Chris Prime
Oh, here's the Killdozer.
00:44:06
Zach Sheets
The killdozer, yeah.
00:44:10
Zach Sheets
i do And I do like when he like he gets, like, so they up his truck, but then he's like, he he becomes the blue shell.
00:44:17
Chris Prime
Didn't see that coming. I don't know if that i don't know if that's like a thing in the new modern games, but I do like that's like a like a big...
00:44:25
Chris Prime
and That was like, okay, he's going his ultimate form.
00:44:29
Zach Sheets
Well, and it's like it's like a kamikaze thing, too. like He just blew himself up to like take them out, right? like he's He's not coming back from like blowing up becoming like blowing up the carts. He's like, for Koopa! And blowing himself up.
Dramatic Climax: Koopa's Kamikaze Attack
00:44:42
Chris Prime
Can't tell you. I don't know he ever comes back in other things, but... Yeah, he doesn't come back at all. i'm like, the movie.
00:44:50
Zach Sheets
Yeah, i I feel like that was like a kamikaze mission of like, I'm going to turn myself into a blue shell bomb and blow them up.
00:44:59
Chris Prime
I mean, he succeeds. he
00:45:02
Chris Prime
he He stopped the Kong army from entering Bowser's castle.
00:45:07
Zach Sheets
Oh man, the Kong Armory gets wiped out.
00:45:11
Zach Sheets
Like, they had so many carts with them, and then it's like, it's like the only it's like one cart, it's like, like Peach Toto are the only two that make it out.
00:45:20
Chris Prime
Yeah, that's because they they like so ran away while all the robots that were picking the Kong family up.
00:45:27
Chris Prime
Okay, but why wasn't Bowser just not doing that? Just like, why is he he having a land army if his air army can just swoop up and pick people up? You know, like, I don't understand that.
00:45:37
Zach Sheets
Yeah. It seems like he's out a bunch of those, at least a couple of those, like, you know, the the clown cars that they fly around too Like, do, like, an aerial assault. Like, you have, like, you could have flying Koopas, you've got, like, you know your whole base is flying, and it's like, you'll launch it like an aerial attack.
00:45:56
Zach Sheets
It's like, no, we gotta, we gotta, they chose the battlefield. We have to just match what they're doing. they've chosen that They've chosen the form of the battle.
00:46:05
Chris Prime
I mean, they have honor. thoughll They'll like meet them on the the like the battleground. It wasn't like Koopa was just like bullet bill all the time. Bullet bill.
00:46:17
Zach Sheets
maybe i think maybe they said the one is the one giant bullet bill and that was it
00:46:23
Chris Prime
Yeah, I don't know if the bullet bill also goes back into the same chamber. So you can only use like whatever you have.
00:46:31
Zach Sheets
Well, it's weird because they're also sentient. They're able to like like feel pain and they anger and like change course.
00:46:36
Chris Prime
feel pain, which is which is different. That's new.
00:46:43
Zach Sheets
I mean, they they they always had faces. I think we always assumed they were actual creatures. They were just like a living bullet. Yeah. Yeah, bushes and
00:46:51
Chris Prime
I mean, in this world, every almost everything had a face.
00:46:55
Zach Sheets
yeah yeah yeah bushes his faces, yeah.
00:46:55
Chris Prime
The clouds had face.
00:47:00
Zach Sheets
It's hard to tell like what's synthetic creature what's just like a decoration.
00:47:01
Chris Prime
What's a real face? Yeah. Yeah, exactly. So I always thought Bullet Bills were just, they were they had faces, but they're not, like, sentient.
00:47:10
Zach Sheets
They're like a World War II fighter plane. They like painted like a face on it.
00:47:16
Zach Sheets
It's got a cool tiger mouth on it. That's how know it's mean.
00:47:19
Chris Prime
Yeah, just because it has a face, it doesn't mean, like, it has feelings.
00:47:23
Chris Prime
I guess this does.
00:47:25
Zach Sheets
least, yeah, the big boy does.
00:47:29
Zach Sheets
but then But then I do i do like the the scene where Donkey Kong and Mario are in like the like the giant fish at the bottom of the ocean, and then they kind of hammer in one of the themes of the movie, which is like, our dad like our dads don't like us. Our dads don't respect us.
00:47:45
Zach Sheets
So that's how they bond. Because they set up early on that Mario's dad's just like, you're a loser, Mario. are you dragging your brother down with this stupid plumbing business? And then, like, Cranky Kong's just like, like, you're loser, Donkey Kong. are you, like, you lost that fight?
00:48:02
Chris Prime
Well, to be fair.
00:48:02
Zach Sheets
You're showboat.
00:48:04
Chris Prime
Well, yeah, I think because he had that fight in the bag and he showboated.
00:48:09
Zach Sheets
But you're like, oh, it's like, oh, both are we we both of us hate our dads. We're friends now.
Father-Son Bonding: Mario and Donkey Kong
00:48:17
Zach Sheets
and then And then they're able to like you know they they figure out their... Luckily, there's like one the one rocket still down there, and they're able to like throw fly back to the Mushroom Kingdom.
00:48:27
Chris Prime
How weird in the movie theater would have been to just sit there and watch this moment and then this one kid looks at his father and he's just like, screw you, dad.
00:48:35
Zach Sheets
That's how I feel. You're saying what I'm saying.
00:48:36
Chris Prime
Yeah, just like this.
00:48:37
Zach Sheets
That's what you're saying thinking.
00:48:38
Chris Prime
Just like, you know what mean? Like, you're just sitting like, oh, this is weird. You know, like the dash is like, oh, crap. Awkward ride home later. Where the kid now knows the right word to say with his father, like in the car.
00:48:56
Zach Sheets
my dads My dad's a jerk. I'm like Mario and Donkey Kong.
00:49:05
Zach Sheets
But yeah, then like the the the the big... Well, actually, it's kind of weird because there's like two finales, but like the the wedding for like wedding battle is is pretty fun. like i do like that like you know Peach had this entire plan to secretly bring an ice flower in. And then goes like full Elsa.
00:49:23
Chris Prime
So in this world, all plant, every other plant life is just a weapon.
00:49:29
Zach Sheets
Yeah, every every sort of... Every every plant... is well see Plants are either like sentient, like piranha plants, or they're... Yeah, they they're give you like a superpower.
00:49:41
Zach Sheets
And yeah, so she uses like the ice flower, which I think that's also like a newer... That's like a newer power. That was in like the... What? New Superbobos, I think? Wasn't that the first showed up?
00:49:48
Chris Prime
I think. It wasn't, like, recent.
00:49:51
Zach Sheets
Because fire flowers are obviously like... that's OG, like original Super Mario Brothers. That's like, goes the way back to that. But then, yeah, ice flowers are kind of a newer thing, which it's it's kind of weird that it took them that long to figure out like, hey, what about a flower that shoots ice?
00:50:06
Zach Sheets
We have a fire one.
00:50:09
Chris Prime
Eh, mechanically, it just slows it down. But in this world, there wasn't, like, a a need for that. Because in Mario, it's like, like as people start playing more, so like, Mario was supposed to be a little more precise and whatever.
00:50:24
Chris Prime
And then you get the new games where you can basically blaze through a level real quick.
00:50:29
Chris Prime
So, I guess in order to do something different, they ice-fired it.
00:50:35
Zach Sheets
well The big thing about like Ice Flower is that you could like freeze enemies and you could like kick them as a block and they would take out other enemies.
00:50:41
Zach Sheets
You could always like turn someone into a shell basically and like kick them.
00:50:48
Zach Sheets
Instead of instantly eliminating them, like a Fire Flower.
00:50:53
Zach Sheets
but and i do i do like i love like it's it's it's kind of I guess it's kind of like a wonder when Donkey Kong and Mario show up and plays with the entire like army to get to the top of the wedding ceremony.
00:51:07
Zach Sheets
and they're doing all It's like full on. just like this is like This is Mario Brothers like super supervisor brothers like platforming and it goes fully to the side and it turns into a Mario stage basically.
00:51:18
Chris Prime
Yeah, but wouldn't that have been better with Mario and Luigi?
00:51:21
Zach Sheets
probably Yeah, that's so that's why that's why I'm saying like that was like in one of my main complaints.
00:51:26
Chris Prime
But I guess, like, you know, they they wanted to save that for something later, and it also doesn't make sense that Luigi just instantly can just hop in. But, I mean, he does.
00:51:39
Chris Prime
I mean, I'm fine with... withigii with like Donkey Kong showing his moves, because there definitely was a fan base where Donkey Kong fans wanted to see that. I
00:51:53
Chris Prime
and just find it that there's so much chaos in that scene that, thank God, we could watch this at home. Because I think when I watched that in theaters, i was just like, what is so much?
00:52:02
Zach Sheets
It's so overwhelming the first time me see it.
Final Battle in Brooklyn: Real-World Connection
00:52:04
Zach Sheets
We're just like like... It's like so much Mario action, but then it also like there's like so much... like It's just so fast. that You have to be like, alright, what actually is happening? Yeah.
00:52:15
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's a lot to take in. it It reminds me of when you on a movie theater ride, like in a theme park, and you go onto one of those like full spectaculars, and you have to ride it like two or three times to see everything, to understand like what was going on at that moment.
00:52:30
Zach Sheets
that's That's like both these movies, like both of Mario movies are like theme park ride where it's just like, yeah, strap yourself in and just like but it wash over you.
00:52:39
Zach Sheets
And they're so they're so fast. There's so much happening in like every scene, and like the sides and like in the background and
00:52:49
Zach Sheets
But, yeah, and then Margaret's the Tanuki suit, which is fun. So you get get to see, like, that in, like, its full 3D glory. Saves Luigi. and but But then, like we were saying before, like, it it kind of, like, is, like, the same ending as, like, the 93 movie, where it's, like, they get everyone gets sucked into Brooklyn.
00:53:10
Zach Sheets
And so, like, the big finale is, like, in, like, the real world, quote-unquote. Yeah.
00:53:15
Chris Prime
And basically, i guess it ends basically in the beginning where they're showing the people of Brooklyn that the the the like viral sensation. Margaret brothers are here. They do more than just plumbing.
00:53:34
Zach Sheets
And, yeah then yeah, they get the Superstar, and then they they basic yeah they go like Super Saiyan. They're blazing through everything. like they're they're They're like, you know, because this the Superstar's powers are invincible. like They can't be touched. So, they yeah, they just blast through like the entire army. they're doing like They're doing all sorts of acrobatics and punching people like miles away.
Superstar Teamwork: Mario and Luigi's Invincibility
00:53:57
Zach Sheets
And I mean, they they like beat Bowser down.
00:54:01
Zach Sheets
like They punch him from like the stratosphere into the ground.
00:54:07
Zach Sheets
like it's It's kind of like it's like kind of like weird like if this is like a more of like a If this is like invincible or something, Bowser would be like on the ground like it's like like just like a bloody mess.
00:54:17
Chris Prime
Yeah, spitting up blood.
00:54:20
Chris Prime
they hold back on that. Like they fight in a very realistic manner when they like punch and get in position and then do the physicality. So yeah, no, it's because when we watch more modern things that do that, the impact is way harder and the villain usually gets damaged or even the hero.
00:54:39
Zach Sheets
could Yeah, because that's been... That, like, similar move has been done in, like, other things. Like, where you punch them in the sky and then punch them down into the ground.
00:54:48
Chris Prime
and they vomit a little blood.
00:54:48
Zach Sheets
And then he gets punched through, like, his, like, fortress, island, whatever that thing is. And it's, like, a giant explosion.
00:54:59
Chris Prime
Again, what's inside of these buildings that are flammable?
00:55:04
Zach Sheets
Like, magical energy... the energy of, like, the the Mushroom Kingdom, I guess.
00:55:11
Chris Prime
He's his own kingdom.
00:55:15
Chris Prime
yeah Evil energy.
00:55:15
Zach Sheets
Like... the The spirit of evil?
00:55:21
Zach Sheets
But, uh... He's mostly okay, and then they feed... The the the big thing is, like, they feed him, like, the the blue mushroom. That was like, a joke being earlier in the movie, and then he becomes small to capture him.
00:55:32
Zach Sheets
And then... um'm Yeah, I'm definitely curious, like, what happened to Brooklyn, like, that neighborhood. Because we don't see them help, like, they don't see them help clean it up or, you know, say goodbye to their family.
00:55:44
Zach Sheets
They're just, like, next the cuts to them, like, we live in the Mushroom Kingdom now. Bye. like Yeah.
00:55:48
Chris Prime
Well, they destroyed that neighborhood, so they can't live there anymore.
00:55:53
Zach Sheets
Well, they have a newspaper clipping that says Brooklyn's saved.
00:55:56
Zach Sheets
But then, but then... What did they tell their parents? We're going to live in another dimension now. We're going live in another universe.
00:56:07
Zach Sheets
And also, like good luck good like good luck with your but rebuilding a neighborhood.
00:56:13
Chris Prime
Bye. Someone else does this.
00:56:15
Zach Sheets
Spike means Spike. Maybe Spike's just like, alright, giant construction contract for me.
00:56:21
Chris Prime
I'm going to be on this for 10 years.
00:56:25
Chris Prime
It seems like a racket. like They worked for Spike, they did construction, now they're doing plumbing, but then it's like they did all this construction from all this destruction from their plumbing thing, because that's how they entered the portal, was just entering the the weird, mysterious plumbing problem.
00:56:46
Chris Prime
This seems like conspiracy. Like,
00:56:47
Zach Sheets
that yeah that would that That would be a good scam of like they come in they like they like oh yeah you got a pulling problem? Uh we caused too much damage. Here hire here's spike Wrecking Crew Spike to come in and like he'll repair your building for you or your house for you.
00:57:03
Chris Prime
You know, they should do a... Now that they established that this is a connected universe between that, they should do a Spike movie.
00:57:10
Chris Prime
Or a Spike, like a one-shot original.
00:57:14
Zach Sheets
it's like It's like a mob movie or something.
00:57:17
Zach Sheets
like He's like mobbed up.
00:57:19
Chris Prime
It's like, alright, this is what we gotta do. We gotta start going down in the undergrounds of Brooklyn, start banging on pipes until you get some creature that shows up, let it loose, and then you hire me.
00:57:29
Chris Prime
it's It's sort of like what they do for damage control in Marvel.
00:57:34
Zach Sheets
Yes. yeah spike six Spike is like it's like, yeah, he's like finding monsters from like the other other universes and he's like la like like unleashing them.
00:57:40
Chris Prime
like Yeah, let them loose.
00:57:43
Chris Prime
Sounds weird, but that that's a story.
00:57:47
Chris Prime
But actually, as much as I like the ending, it just sort of ends. It's like Mr. Blue Sky then ends. I'm like, what where are they going?
00:57:54
Chris Prime
Are they going to work? Are they leaving? What's going on? Come back.
00:57:58
Zach Sheets
yeah they they live in the Mushroom Kingdom now. they that They're going to plumb the pipes of the Mushroom Kingdom.
00:58:07
Zach Sheets
and and it is I mean, he like Mario does say he has that moment with his dad where his dad's like proud of him finally, but then it's kind of like they don't... There probably should have been a little bit more of them being like, well, bye family.
00:58:20
Zach Sheets
You're never going see us again.
00:58:22
Chris Prime
I mean, him and his dad had that. It's in a very Italian family thing to do where it's like, oh I love you, but I can't let you know that. Like, i'm proud of you. that's That's a realistic to interpretation.
00:58:35
Zach Sheets
He said Mamma Mia, so that's how you know he's proud of
00:58:38
Chris Prime
The family model wasn't even like, let's it go. like that They should have been shouting that through like the window.
00:58:45
Chris Prime
Remember the Mario family's model?
Focus on Fan Service: Plot and Animation Reflection
00:58:47
Chris Prime
Let's it go. And then they're like, hey let's it go.
00:58:51
Zach Sheets
there is that weird There is that weird... The one like weirdly dramatic scene where Mario gets punched into the pizzeria and he's like actually like seemed like he's like actually injured.
00:59:02
Chris Prime
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:59:02
Zach Sheets
And then he's like, let's it go. he walks out.
00:59:08
Zach Sheets
That like the Avengers Assemble, but it was really low-key. It's like, let's go. Let's
00:59:18
Zach Sheets
like let's it go
00:59:24
Zach Sheets
But yeah, overall, I mean, this movie's not going to win any awards for its plot, but if just for fan service, for just like, you if you want to see your fan, you want to see a bunch of references, it's tons of fun.
00:59:39
Zach Sheets
And yeah, it's and it's the the animation is is is awesome. like it's It's so colorful and detailed and...
00:59:47
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's very approachable. Even if you don't know much Mario, it is very easily digestible. The movie doesn't ask much of you to just enjoy it.
01:00:00
Chris Prime
like Maybe if you were born within like the last 20 years, you'd get things. Even for kids, it still goes over their head, a few of them, but i mean it was very and it's every very watchable.
01:00:15
Chris Prime
I don't know if... like I like that they didn't really lean into the love story for this round.
01:00:20
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
01:00:21
Chris Prime
They didn't really make it seem like the Princess Peach was the goal.
01:00:26
Chris Prime
Mario's goal was to save his brother, which I was like, yeah, that's what it should be.
01:00:31
Chris Prime
If anything, Toad was like, I finally have a friend. That was another big accomplishment.
01:00:35
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
01:00:36
Chris Prime
But he sort of doesn't do anything at the end.
01:00:39
Zach Sheets
Yeah, they they don't bring back his... They establish, like... The one thing they establish about him is, like, his cooking skills. Like, he... Like, because he's carrying, like, a frying pan, but he's, like, able to, like, cook up foods. But then it's just for that one scene where he, like, tricks the guards.
01:00:55
Zach Sheets
And then, yeah, he doesn't yeah it doesn't really, like, contribute anything to the final battle.
01:01:01
Zach Sheets
like Like Peach and Donkey Kong are in there, like, mixing it up with Bowser.
01:01:06
Zach Sheets
But, uh... Yeah, anything else, Chris?
01:01:11
Chris Prime
Looking forward to seeing the sequel at some point. Not sure I'm going to see it in theaters right away just because it's just like you're asking for like to be surrounded by kids.
01:01:21
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Yeah. if you're if you're If you're listening to this, like when this goes up, like this weekend, especially it's since it's like Easter weekend, it's going to be absolute insanity. I think I like already like, uh, we're recording this like Wednesday, the opening day was like already like the most, like the record of breaking day. It's like the biggest opening day of like the year.
01:01:40
Zach Sheets
Just for like one day, it made like $34 million. So this is going to be like a juggernaut as far as like box office.
01:01:48
Chris Prime
only that much they didn't break every goddamn record
01:01:52
Zach Sheets
what Yeah, the one day they made more in one day than like most movies make in their entire weekend.
01:01:58
Zach Sheets
But yeah, Galaxy's fun. If there's not a review on the site yet, there should be there'll be reviews up there soon. And definitely if you're if you're a Star Fox fan, definitely go see Galaxy.
01:02:09
Zach Sheets
But yeah, so I think that'll wrap it up for this week. Come back next week. The the Boys is back for its final season. So we're to be talking but we're talking about another kind of violent, you know, brutal superhero thing. Super, the James Gunn movie.
01:02:23
Zach Sheets
So check back for that next week. And then however you say all the stuff got news reviews trailers. Yeah. There's like said, there should be a super out galaxy review up there soon. Also soon there should be our PAX East review or like a, you know convention review. So you can check out everything we saw at PAX East this year.
01:02:41
Zach Sheets
And yeah, all the other usual stuff's up there as well. Head check all stuff out. And yeah, so for Chris, I'm Zach and we will see you next week.
