Introduction and Year-End Wrap-Up

00:00:19
Zach Sheets
Hello and welcome to the Everything Action Cast, the podcast week of December 22nd, 2025. your host, Zach.
00:00:25
Chris Prime
I'm co-host, Chris.
00:00:27
Zach Sheets
And this week we are wrapping up 2025 and talking about our best and worst movies of the year. And I think pretty overall a pretty solid year, 2025 for movies.
00:00:37
Zach Sheets
There wasn't a lot of like really terrible ones and most of them were solid to good.

Streaming vs Theatrical Releases: The Rise of Bad Movies?

00:00:44
Chris Prime
Yeah, agree. i'll ill There wasn't any... runaway stinkers that really made the movie sort like skew where like cinema's dead.
00:00:57
Chris Prime
like
00:00:58
Zach Sheets
yeah yeah're not yeah like Yeah, not theatrically. there There were a lot of like really terrible ones. Streaming, on our hand, that's where that's where the bad movies live now.
00:01:06
Chris Prime
Yeah, that's that's where it gets like crazy.
00:01:12
Zach Sheets
Because because they need the content. They'll just throw whatever they want. Whatever wherever they can get to throw on their...

Box Office Insights for 2025

00:01:18
Zach Sheets
And kind of like box office wise, I think it was not particularly great. and there's There's a couple like huge hits, but i think it's I think it's down or kind of like basically the same as last year.
00:01:29
Zach Sheets
It's nowhere near the level of like, you know, pre-pandemic. It's like the insane heights of like the Marvel Cinematic Universe of like endgame like years.
00:01:42
Zach Sheets
But there was there's still like quite a few like really like big... like Kind of like...

The Unexpected Success of the Minecraft Movie

00:01:47
Zach Sheets
Like a Minecraft movie was like a shocking hit. it's like the I think it's the biggest movie domestically of the year right now.
00:01:54
Chris Prime
And that's also one of your like, uh, like dishonorable mentions.
00:02:00
Zach Sheets
no I put it on... I liked it. It's an honorable mention.
00:02:03
Chris Prime
Oh, is it? don't know.
00:02:03
Zach Sheets
It was...
00:02:04
Chris Prime
I've seen that movie flip flop on some people's list.
00:02:06
Zach Sheets
It was, i mean, it was shockingly fun. you i mean I'm not like, and I have very limited knowledge of Minecraft and i still thought it was a pretty fun movie. It had that like weird Jared Hess, the polydynamite energy.

Nezha 2: Global Box Office Champion

00:02:20
Zach Sheets
And
00:02:21
Zach Sheets
I think, I'm trying to think worldwide. look Well, Nadesha 2 is like the biggest movie worldwide of the year. $2.2 billion, dollars most of China.
00:02:32
Chris Prime
Damn. They love that movie, I guess.
00:02:34
Zach Sheets
Which i think I think it's on HBO Max now if anyone wants to watch it. I haven't seen either Ninja movie, so I need to watch both of those. Just to see what they're...
00:02:41
Chris Prime
i was on an air i was on an airplane where they were trying to like promote the first one, and I was just like so lost, because I think the quality between the first and second movie jumps up.
00:02:46
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:02:53
Zach Sheets
Oh, yeah. like i' what From what I've heard about the second one is that like the CG quality ends in like this insane like Avengers endgame level battle of like celestial gods fighting each other and stuff.
00:03:07
Zach Sheets
But I think think you also need to like like think you know like a lot like some of the backstory about the mythology or else you're like totally lost about what's happening.
00:03:19
Zach Sheets
Because, like i like like, because it's so big in China, like, everyone China, like, knows, like, the the mythology. so it's like, yeah, Neija. And then the U.S. is like, who? What?
00:03:31
Zach Sheets
And I don't think there's any sort of, like, hand-holding or recapping of, like, hey, this is this is this person. This is what they do. It's like, you know these people, you them, right? You know Mm-hmm.
00:03:44
Chris Prime
All your favorite heroes are back.
00:03:46
Zach Sheets
m
00:03:46
Chris Prime
Yeah.

Top 10 Movies of 2025: Chris's Picks

00:03:47
Zach Sheets
But yeah, but let's let's let's jump into the movies we we have actually seen. we'll We'll dive into our best lists first, and then we'll get get into the worst lists. and And a bad note. And we're going to just come about so back and forth, and we each have like a top 10 list.
00:04:05
Zach Sheets
and but And then I have a whole slew honorable mentions that we'll get to at the end of the list. But Chris, do you want to start what like with your number 10 movie?
00:04:13
Chris Prime
Okay, so my number 10 is Fantastic Four, First Steps. I love the aesthetics. I love the... Just, like, the story.
00:04:24
Chris Prime
Classic Fantastic Four. The only thing, the downside is that it's pretty fulfilling, like, for a Marvel movie where... i mean, this is everyone's problem, is that, like, you just don't need to see it more than once a year.
00:04:42
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:04:43
Chris Prime
It's a movie that you you kind of watch either all of it or some of it and you're good for a while. Because only like two things happen.
00:04:54
Chris Prime
It literally is just like a cosmic space like flight and then fighting a big monster like a big kaiju. And that's it.
00:05:05
Chris Prime
Like i don't think there's even a montage where they stop any crime.
00:05:08
Zach Sheets
Well, in the opening, get to see like their past exploits. It's not like Mole Man, like the Gorilla Army or what's the Ape Army.
00:05:17
Chris Prime
But like, that's it.
00:05:19
Zach Sheets
o
00:05:21
Zach Sheets
But yeah, it was it was it was great that the Fantasy IV finally got a good movie. After, you know, two two and a half felt... like i don't think you You can't cut the Roger Corbyn movie because it never came out, but the the the two Fox movies...
00:05:38
Zach Sheets
It's like, oh, finally someone understands the Vaness 4 and then makes a good movie.
00:05:45
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's like, again, it's very competent, but yeah, I think because there have been so many other Fantastic Four properties, you just sort of like are, oh man, like that is not as bad as it could be.
00:05:57
Chris Prime
Especially for an origin explaining movie.
00:05:59
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:06:01
Chris Prime
and it It feels like a sequel to a movie that like that has happened.
00:06:01
Zach Sheets
Well...
00:06:07
Zach Sheets
Yeah, this is this is one of the superhero movies that kind of like, I mean, we'll get to it probably later, but Superman also does where just it just like it jumps in. They're already super established in the in this universe, and you kind just think there's no like origin buildup. You don't have to like go through like the whole, like this is how they got their powers. We gotta watch them get their powers. It's like, nope, they have their powers. They all know how to use them really well, and they have to deal with like their latest threat.
00:06:34
Zach Sheets
And we finally got like a great depiction of Galactus after he was a cloud in Rise the Silver Surfer.
00:06:41
Zach Sheets
he's he's He's like his giant world-devouring self.
00:06:45
Chris Prime
I say the only problem is that I don't remember the soundtrack for a fantasy before being Sam like memorable.
00:06:53
Zach Sheets
It had the... that kind of like the weird vocal track that kind of like chants like Fantastic Four, like something, right?
00:07:03
Chris Prime
I totally forgot. Like, it's, like, not memorable for me.
00:07:07
Zach Sheets
I thought, was it like a Michael Giacchino joint? So it's kind of like it was kind of like a little bit like The Incredibles. It's like, you did that already, right? Yeah, Michael Giacchino did the score. So it's basically him just like remixing his like Incredibles score.
00:07:26
Zach Sheets
Even though the decalable score is kind of like more memorable than Fantastic Four score.
00:07:30
Zach Sheets
The main thing I remember, like the main thing that stood out, yeah, like there was like like a choir just being like, Fantastic Four! The end credits.
00:07:41
Chris Prime
Totally blew over my head. like Again, saw a movie in theaters once, and it was just like it was good, and that was it.
00:07:47
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I haven't rewatched it on like Disney Plus or anything since I saw it in theaters, but it was Yeah, it was, like, I mean, the best Marvel movie of the year. Okay.
00:07:59
Chris Prime
I don't know.
00:07:59
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:08:00
Chris Prime
I think, for me, Thunderbolts was better. But, like, Thunderbolts is better as a Marvel, like, hey, you you need at least know all this.
00:08:03
Zach Sheets
okay
00:08:12
Chris Prime
But I get why, like, but also it's got the same problem where, like, I just don't need to see Thunderbolts again.
00:08:19
Chris Prime
but at least it's quotable. some Some scenes are, like, funny and whatever.

Top 10 Movies of 2025: Zach's Picks

00:08:24
Zach Sheets
Yeah, Fantastic Four was like, know, it was like, because Brave New World and Thunderbolts were kind of like the same thing we've been getting the MCU, and this is like, you know, it's the retrofuturist world. It's like the first time the Fantastic Four in the MCU, finally.
00:08:39
Zach Sheets
it's so's it's it was it definitely felt like fresher than some of the other movies that came this year.
00:08:44
Chris Prime
Yeah, agree. yeah.
00:08:46
Zach Sheets
So my number 10 is Finalist Nation Bloodlines. I think it was I was debating between this and the monkey because they that they're very they're very similar. They both came out this year. But i kind of I kind of went with the like the bigger, flashier Finalist Nation.
00:09:01
Zach Sheets
And you know just i'm a I'm a huge Finalist Nation fan. I think you are too, Chris, right? the the whole The whole series. Except for four is terrible, but the rest of the rest them are great.
00:09:12
Zach Sheets
And 4 was like the... it was I think it was it was the the the NASCAR race is the opening disaster. And it was like the 3D one.
00:09:12
Chris Prime
Which one was four again?
00:09:25
Chris Prime
Oh. Yeah, it's not that memorable for me.
00:09:28
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Like one like one of the deaths was like the guy got sucked into like the pool filter.
00:09:33
Zach Sheets
And it was like the car wash one. they were it was it was It was bad. It was just like the 3D effects and... like a terrible cast that you just, yeah, you want them all to like, but yeah.
00:09:44
Chris Prime
It's like memorable. It's like unmemorable cast. Yeah.
00:09:47
Zach Sheets
Yeah. But yeah, you five was five was great. And then this was like kind of like the momentum of five. And and also also like the culminate, it's like takes everything that came before it. It kind of like wraps all together. Cause it's like the explanation for everything.
00:10:04
Zach Sheets
a like Kind of like, oh, this one disaster in the sixties kind of set in motion, everything.
00:10:12
Zach Sheets
And it then it's just like the idea of like every like this everyone is dying because they weren't even supposed to be born.
00:10:20
Chris Prime
It was a correction.
00:10:21
Zach Sheets
Yeah. And that's been like working its way through like this like like this backlog of killing people. It's why it's like taking so long to get to like this one family.
00:10:32
Zach Sheets
But yeah, just super fun. i mean, some the kills were great. There were some like awesome, like some of the best kills in the in the series, like the garbage truck and the MRI machine.
00:10:43
Chris Prime
Yeah, that... The MRR machine was sad, because... the The guy totally didn't want to be part of this and was, like, at that point, like, already believing it. I think kills before you figure out the game and all the rules is sort of, like, just sort of clumsy happenstances.
00:11:02
Chris Prime
But as soon as, like, you're aware of the rules and now it's like, oh, no, like, death is just like, oh, okay, time to up the ante.
00:11:10
Zach Sheets
Yeah, and and they're and they're trying to do the... Because they talked to Tony Todd in like one of his final roles, which he got yeah he got just a great like heartbreaking, tragic send-off of like, thank you, Tony Todd. like because he goes like his last His last words are basically like, cherish life.
00:11:25
Chris Prime
Yeah. like Even if you're gonna die, like still live it to less the fullest.
00:11:30
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:11:31
Chris Prime
<unk>s It's very like haunting.
00:11:33
Zach Sheets
And it's basically it's basic like him talking. It's not Bloodworth talking, it's Tony Todd talking. But, because if they're trying to do the Final Destination 2, like, make yourself clinically dead, and then you'll escape death.
00:11:48
Zach Sheets
But then it backfires on them. i do I do appreciate they brought, like, because he says he says that, or they keep the, if you kill someone, you get their life thing from 5.
00:11:59
Zach Sheets
Which, no like, no one no one in this movie wants to do that to keep themselves alive. They they go with, like, the other the other option. They're not as selfish as, like, of the characters in 5. Yeah.
00:12:09
Chris Prime
Yeah. Well, which is crazy because that's like one of the prequel movies now.
00:12:13
Zach Sheets
Yeah, that's that's like before 1.
00:12:18
Zach Sheets
And yeah just like I love also like there's like so many great fake-outs too. like The whole like tattoo shop thing, is like like you think that's going to be like the big... which That was the trailer. like that was like their big like like like The first like look at it was like, oh man, this tattoo is going be a crazy kill in the movie. And then it's like, oh no, it's just like a fake-out.
00:12:35
Chris Prime
Yep.
00:12:37
Zach Sheets
Which, that so that's also one of the fun parts of of that, too, is, like, the fake-out of, like, is a huge build-up, and then something like something, like, completely randomly just kills the person. It's It's like, oh you survived, like, this car crash, or, like, this, like, whatever this happened, then it's like, oh, but then, like, a you know a glass a glass pain fell on you, or, like, something impales you in the head.
00:13:00
Chris Prime
Yeah, I think by then they figured out the formula of what they need to showcase in order to get people, like, surprised.
00:13:13
Chris Prime
And that's what was nice, because... Man, when was the last Final Destination? was, like, 2000... Maybe.
00:13:21
Zach Sheets
I think that that's the thing, too. that was like so it was like There was so much built-up anticipation for like a new one, because it's been so long. And then the guys that made it like were clearly like super fans of the franchise.
00:13:32
Zach Sheets
So they knew what everyone wanted, and they delivered on it.
00:13:38
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:13:38
Zach Sheets
like They wanted to see like crazy Rube Goldberg kills. They wanted... the they wanted like elaborate rule they wanted like the elaborate steps to try like fake death like the fake outs so yeah it was it was i would i would definitely put it it's like the one of the top movies in the series i think i mean two is still the best one i would say but i i would definitely put this one on like like alongside five
00:14:04
Zach Sheets
Yeah, just a great a great year for, you know, kind of Rube Goldberg style over the top, horribly bloodied kills. Between this and the monkey.
00:14:17
Chris Prime
Well, which is, I can't mention, like, Monkey is higher my list.
00:14:17
Zach Sheets
So, Chris.
00:14:20
Zach Sheets
yes So, yeah, what's your number nine, Chris?
00:14:25
Chris Prime
My number 9th is The Accountant 2. It's probably the best buddy cop comedy, or, like, buddy assassin comedy that, uh...
00:14:34
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:14:37
Chris Prime
think it's all year? I don't I've seen too many action movies where both people are competent at being gun-wielding killers.
00:14:48
Chris Prime
Well, I mean, they tried, but... Though, they don't have the road-trip humor that The Accountant 2 has. It's a movie about like brothers and and like Assassin Code and coming-of-age story.
00:15:10
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:15:11
Chris Prime
And Ben Affleck goes hard in trying to one-up his performance as a handy, capable accountant.
00:15:21
Chris Prime
To the point where it makes you question the first movie just because it's like two different acting methods of trying to portray someone with the autism.
00:15:33
Zach Sheets
Yeah, it's like, can can you become more autistic?
00:15:37
Chris Prime
Somehow he did. He, like, just is no longer the suave wearing the suit in, in like, almost like, like, you know, the John Wick of accounting for actually doing his accounting job. i think I think in this movie he does one accounting trick of just kind of doing calculations. And then the rest is just him, like, walking up to people and punching them.
00:16:01
Chris Prime
There's no, like, cool analyzing by things and helping people get tax breaks. But it it's worth it, I think, to see it.
00:16:11
Chris Prime
It's just like more Jon Brenthal just having fun and and just ranking. I feel like I need to see Jon Brenthal in a PG-13 action comedy movie.
00:16:23
Chris Prime
That's coming. I feel like that's... Just imagine a toned-down Punisher where he can't really curse in front of kids, but soon as soon when the kids aren't looking, he's just like punching people in the head.
00:16:36
Chris Prime
like i
00:16:37
Zach Sheets
Are you saying he's like a pacifier or like a tooth fairy or something?
00:16:40
Chris Prime
Yeah, he needs to be like in Pacifier 2. don't
00:16:43
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:16:46
Chris Prime
i don't know. I just feel there is an opportunity to see Jonathan Berthal be the neighborhood like watch guy who takes his job too serious and then just like totally is right and is just ready for like a problem.
00:17:02
Chris Prime
But the accountant is that. like Accountant is just sort of like... but it it like It's unabashedly a comedy action movie. And you think it's not going to be just because, you know, you've seen the first movie and the second movie. two different tones.
00:17:18
Chris Prime
But...
00:17:18
Zach Sheets
Well, because they were selling it, too, as like, someone killed J.K. Simmons, we gotta figure out who killed him. we're We're in this, like, conspiracy. And it's then when it when it came out and people were reviewing it, it's like, oh it's like it's like it's like a rain it's like a Rain Man action movie. It's like, if you combine Rain Man with, like, John Wick or something.
00:17:34
Chris Prime
Yeah, and then the conspiracy of everything is sort of solved, and then it just there's no consequence. like No one cares. which is this It's sort of like the big reveal, and then you just go, okay, so anyone going to say anything? It's like, nah, just letting you know this happened. That's what connects everything. Yep.
00:17:54
Chris Prime
Now you know. It's like, is anyone else going to say something? It's like, nope.
00:17:59
Chris Prime
We are not. Yeah. i don't know. You still haven't seen it yet, right?
00:18:05
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I was trying to watch it and I said never get around to cramming everything else in. I was trying to watch.
00:18:10
Chris Prime
Alright, that's definitely like a...
00:18:10
Zach Sheets
i will i' but I'm going to double feature the first one this one again. and this one just like because haven't seen the first one it came out. one and then watch too.
00:18:21
Chris Prime
It's weird because I've seen The Encounters a lot more just because it's either like recommended on YouTube as like a clip or short or it's like... It's just like playing on things. So it's like, okay, maybe I'll like throw it on as background noise again or something.
00:18:38
Chris Prime
Or maybe I'll watch like one scene just because it's like, oh oh man, I like that sniper scene.
00:18:43
Zach Sheets
And then it sucks you in. you're just like, alright, Ben Affleck, you got me again.
00:18:47
Chris Prime
Yeah. But the Captain 2 is pretty like self-contained because there's way more like brother comedy, like frat, not frat bro humor. But it's a lot of Jon Bernthal just trying to like relate to Ben Affleck and asking him questions and then grunting and then like getting into bar fights.
00:19:05
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I feel like that's also, like, you're saying, like, Ben Affleck was, like, totally changed his personality. I feel like Jon Berthold, like, from the first one this one, sounds like he totally changed his personality, too.
00:19:14
Chris Prime
Oh yeah! you No, wait.
00:19:15
Zach Sheets
Because he was, like, like a serious, like, I'm the Black Ops secret brother.
00:19:20
Chris Prime
Yeah, I'm the shadow.
00:19:21
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Yeah.
00:19:22
Chris Prime
I'm gonna like, yeah, no. And then just like a superhero movie, like because you know everything, they try not to keep bringing up the superpowers and then the like Xavier school for assassins.
00:19:35
Zach Sheets
Yep.
00:19:35
Chris Prime
But they go hard into it. And again, don't want to spoil it, but you'll see what I mean while it's like, okay, they're just leaning into it. They're just like, whatever. It's it's fake. this this version, this is world of like like, it almost gets to like the level of the Kingsman.
00:19:52
Zach Sheets
Okay.
00:19:53
Chris Prime
Yeah, that's what saying. like It's so weird, but I love it. What about you? What's your number nine?
00:20:00
Zach Sheets
So my number nine is F1, trademark the movie. So and kind of like how Joseph Kinski did with Top Gun Maverick. it's It's more about the the way it's shot because the story is very conventional. It's a you know the older veteran guy comes in, teaches the rookie how to do something, and they both learn something along the way.
00:20:22
Zach Sheets
And in this case, it's it's Brad Pitt. It's like this veteran F1 driver who had like a horrific crash years ago. But then he's he's brought back in because there's like a, it's like kind of like failing team that his old buddy Javier Benham is running. And this they have a hotshot rookie, but he's not, he's like, he needs to like learn like the, you know, the instinct and how to feel the car more. Cause he's all about like the social media and like being know like a popular driver, not like actually understanding how cars work.
00:20:55
Chris Prime
He doesn't understand how a car turns on or like how to work as a team.
00:20:59
Zach Sheets
Well, because he like, because Brad Pitt is like, he's like this, like the Uber driver, right? He can get like, he can get like any car and he just knows how yeah like he can just drive it Because his whole thing is like, he kind of like goes to like different like racing circuits and like races and wins. And then it's like, all right, I'm going, I'm going to go like do something else now.
00:21:20
Chris Prime
Oh, is F1 just like his latest one or...
00:21:23
Zach Sheets
Yeah, that's like, because, well, he he was avoiding it because he had like such a, like, he had like a, he almost died. It was this horrific crash. And then he was just like, I'm not doing F1 anymore. That's too dangerous. i'm just going to do like NASCAR or like Baja racing.
00:21:36
Chris Prime
Oh, gotcha.
00:21:38
Zach Sheets
But he gets, yeah, because Javier Bardem was his old teammate. And he's like, come on, I need you, man. I need you for like, and if you, you want you when you win F1, like, you're the best in the world if you win F1. so that's kind of like the draw of like, oh, I do want to prove myself I'm the best in the world.
00:21:54
Chris Prime
But I also feel like that is such a cop-out for F1, because... It's just blatantly saying that, like, is F1 universally the best racing circuit, or is that just what F1's claiming?
00:22:06
Zach Sheets
think probably what they're claiming because they, I think that they literally like, this is like full cooperation of F1. It's all the teams, all the announcers, all the tracks. It's just like, it's full, like it's basically an f one commercial.
00:22:18
Chris Prime
That makes sense.
00:22:21
Zach Sheets
But yeah, i mean, the racing sequences are incredible. It's like, you know, they strapped cameras in the jets in Top Gun of Maverick. They basically that with here, where it's like we're strapping cars like cameras to like F1 cars and having them actually go around racing them on the tracks.
00:22:35
Zach Sheets
And so yeah, like all all the all the racing is awesome. If you're into like, even if you're not like like into like F1, it's still like, just the way it looks visually and just like the like the drama of it in the movie is like, oh yeah, but F1 is awesome.
00:22:51
Zach Sheets
So, i was yeah, definitely, i would say definitely check it out. It's, if if you apple tv it's's finally hit Apple TV, Apple TV, like, like just a couple weeks ago. It was, like, the longest, like, stretch I've seen between, like, a movie being in theaters and and then being streaming.
00:23:05
Zach Sheets
Because it came out in, like, June, and then it only hit Apple TV Plus in, like, December.
00:23:13
Chris Prime
It's like old school streaming
00:23:16
Zach Sheets
Yeah, like, an actual, like, window, a theatrical window like, have movie you play.
00:23:24
Zach Sheets
yeah just yeah super But yeah, super super super exciting, even though the story isn't the original. we like You've seen the story before, but going for the racing and the visuals and you know Brad Pitt being like like the most the most badass, charming like driver in the world.
00:23:43
Zach Sheets
So what what is your number eight, Chris?
00:23:46
Chris Prime
So my number eight is The Amateur. It's a remake of a 1976 movie starring
00:23:57
Zach Sheets
Rami Malek.
00:23:58
Chris Prime
Remy Malek. Yeah. And I don't know why they keep putting Lawrence Fishburne's face on it, but he's in it. But they do make him sort of like a like a treasured character.
00:24:06
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:24:12
Chris Prime
He's not he he's not, like, in the movie constantly. You know, he's sort of just, like, almost like a special boss fight in the movie.
00:24:24
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:24:25
Chris Prime
Like, he he stalks Remy Malek.
00:24:28
Zach Sheets
oh
00:24:29
Chris Prime
It's...
00:24:29
Zach Sheets
Well, he trains them to start with, and he's like, oh, but well, yeah it's like, he's rogue, you gotta hunt him down now.
00:24:35
Chris Prime
Well, so they they give him, like, two weeks worth of training or so, because he he blackmails the CIA to do that, because he, okay, so the premise is that Ray Malik is trying to get revenge on a terrorist group, or just a group of mercenaries, for killing his wife, and it, like, it's, not to spoil much, but, like, it's completely, like, random, like,
00:24:44
Zach Sheets
Yep.
00:25:03
Chris Prime
like why they hurt and all that. It was not like a big conspiracy.
00:25:05
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:25:06
Chris Prime
so Because of that, Remy Malek uses his cyber forensic skills and kind of like fake movie technology hacking to piece together like everything. and It's told really like smart.
00:25:23
Chris Prime
it's I feel like there's no... huge MacGuffin. It's sort of just what happens when there's a wealth of knowledge and, you know, internet stuff that you can piece together and he's really good at figuring out, like, logistics.
00:25:38
Chris Prime
And then...
00:25:38
Zach Sheets
Yeah, he's like top-level CIA analyst.
00:25:42
Chris Prime
Yeah. And it's pretty much like he's the Riddler.
00:25:45
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:25:46
Chris Prime
And the CIA, like, trains him, but, like, he's he's not good at fighting and all. So he has to rely on other means and and power and you know how to have like leverage and stuff.
00:26:01
Chris Prime
So thought it was pretty smart.
00:26:01
Zach Sheets
me he basically He basically becomes like the mechanic...
00:26:04
Chris Prime
Yes, it is.
00:26:05
Zach Sheets
like Like the Charles Bronson version where he's like setting up like accidents.
00:26:08
Chris Prime
hu And again, I like that it's something different from the other kind of action movies. I kind of want to see the remake now, but I know the remake is slower just because i think...
00:26:20
Zach Sheets
Original?
00:26:21
Chris Prime
Yeah, yeah. Sorry.
00:26:22
Zach Sheets
Because it's the remake.
00:26:22
Chris Prime
the yeah Sorry, the original. Just because the remake is faster paced and has some artistic shots that you really want to stress like trauma and grief and the processing.
00:26:36
Chris Prime
I think in the original, it's like a you know very of its day spit like thriller. Because it's quite a spy thriller, but it is spying.
00:26:51
Chris Prime
But it's not spying in the, like, fun James Bond way. It's more in the surveillance way. and I probably imagine the original, it's a lot of, like, them tinkering with, like, radio waves.
00:27:02
Zach Sheets
Yeah,
00:27:04
Zach Sheets
yeah because it was it was like it was like computers to hack.
00:27:05
Chris Prime
No.
00:27:06
Zach Sheets
or it's it's It's like, I got i got a i got dossier full of evidence.
00:27:07
Chris Prime
Just, like, listen for the radio signal.
00:27:12
Chris Prime
Yeah, and then it's like, I put like a tracker of this like shoebox tracker in their car. So that's why I'm like, all right, there's also there's like, if you ever seen, remember the old man?
00:27:27
Zach Sheets
The show?
00:27:27
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:27:28
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:27:29
Chris Prime
There's little bits of, like, just the, of like, wet works within organization stuff. So, uh, I thought it was pretty clever.
00:27:42
Chris Prime
Like, it didn't have to go that far for what it was trying to, its message, but at least shows you more of the world than the, like, dealings of, like, information and all that.
00:27:56
Chris Prime
So, uh...
00:27:57
Zach Sheets
Also had a random Jon Bernthal cameo, so that keeps that thread going on your list.
00:28:02
Chris Prime
Again, you think he's going to be in it longer, but literally three scenes he's in.
00:28:07
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:28:09
Chris Prime
wanders he's hello, and then wanders out, and then wanders in again one more time, he's like, remember me? Alright, bye.
00:28:16
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Yeah.
00:28:19
Chris Prime
And then a great performance by Holt McCartley.
00:28:23
Zach Sheets
horbacaone yeah
00:28:25
Chris Prime
Yeah, he's just in it. I mean, he just he's he's more sitting at a desk. You know, he's that kind of character.
00:28:32
Zach Sheets
Yeah, it would have been great if he got more little more hands-on.
00:28:36
Chris Prime
But, yeah, he's like wearing his same suit from Mindhunter.
00:28:42
Zach Sheets
This is what happens is if his Mindhunter character has got into the CIA.
00:28:46
Chris Prime
Yeah, up in the chain.
00:28:47
Zach Sheets
it
00:28:49
Chris Prime
What about you?
00:28:51
Zach Sheets
So my number eight that we've already talked about is Fantastic Four First Steps. Yeah, loved the visual style, like the retro future, all that. It's it basically took like what we saw in like Loki and just made it into an entire movie.
00:29:05
Zach Sheets
you know All TVA stuff kind of just blows that out. Which I think, it makes sense because I think it's... I think it was Matt Shackman who did WandaVision and Loki, or worked on both those, I think, as the director of 64.
00:29:19
Zach Sheets
It's just like that state that same kind of retro style.
00:29:20
Chris Prime
Mm-hmm.
00:29:24
Zach Sheets
And yeah, it was it was just it was just great to have yeah a good Fantastic Four movie. like They finally got like something worthy of them being like Marvel's first family.
00:29:33
Zach Sheets
And yeah, the cat the cast... i don't We didn't really mention talking about the cast. The other the the entire like the cast is great. like They're like all... like Especially like Vanessa Kirby. like She just like owns being Sue Storm. It's definitely a good complete 180 from like Jessica Alba being Sue Storm.
00:29:50
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's like...
00:29:52
Zach Sheets
Where she says a joke, and then Sue Storm's like, and Vanessa Kirby is running like a UN. It's an actual formidable force.
00:30:01
Chris Prime
i mean, she's like an actual full fleshed out character.
00:30:04
Zach Sheets
Yes.
00:30:04
Chris Prime
And not just waiting to be dated.
00:30:11
Zach Sheets
But the MVP, though, Herbie. Herbie is the MVP. its like Everything with Herbie was great.
00:30:19
Zach Sheets
And just like the design of him, like they have to like put like reel-to-reel tape in him in his head to like have him do like whatever like function he's doing.
00:30:26
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's like they advanced technology in a lot of other properties, but like computer tech is lacking.
00:30:34
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I mean, they have computers, but they're like maybe maybe Apple II level. or it's like good They still around like reel-to-reel tape and, you know, analog systems.
00:30:48
Chris Prime
But they flew to space.
00:30:50
Zach Sheets
Yeah, and and but they yeah they but they have a like a super modern, futuristic spaceship.
00:30:58
Zach Sheets
but Yeah, it was it was it was yeah a great great way to introduce them properly into the MCU, and then I'm definitely curious to see how they're going to, like, like you know... interact with like the actual proper MCU when they like, because this they're in like an alternate universe, so an alternate MCU, but then they're going to be like in the proper one next year when Avengers is eingers Doomsday opens.
00:31:21
Zach Sheets
So definitely curious how they're going to like fit with like the rest of the MCU.
00:31:25
Zach Sheets
So how about your number seven, Chris?
00:31:29
Chris Prime
So my number seven is Clown in the cornfield or clown in a Cornfield.
00:31:33
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:31:34
Chris Prime
It's such a stupid premise, but like it works really well. And then... Again, maybe it's not stupid, but like super simple. It's pretty direct.
00:31:47
Chris Prime
And then... it kind of unravels like this crazy conspiracy lore that is pretty hilarious. Like I genuinely was like blown away of how clever it was.
00:32:06
Chris Prime
But just because like my expectations were so low. Right? Like if I
00:32:10
Zach Sheets
yeah that that that was we we just randomly threw it on and was like i heard about i heard I vaguely heard about this let's watch it it's on Shudder now
00:32:17
Chris Prime
Yeah. But, like, it's it's got memorable kills. It's got a few, like, silly, like, characters that you kind of root for.
00:32:28
Chris Prime
especially just, like, the the the dad who, uh, gets, like, a very simple kill. And it's, like, an accidental kill.
00:32:40
Chris Prime
Okay, well, like, don't move that thing up. Uh, like, the the part where he stabs the dude in the neck. And then alright, don't touch that. The guy pulls it out anyway, and now you're dead.
00:32:51
Zach Sheets
Yeah, it its it's it was was like funny and great to like see the of like the aftermath of something like this horror movie stuff like someone has like deal with like the like medical issues of like people getting stabbed. Yeah.
00:33:01
Chris Prime
Yep. it's It's not like they're a team of trained soldiers that know how to patch themselves up. Literally, they're just people that, like, when they get injured, their first thing to do is to find a real doctor to help them.
00:33:17
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:33:19
Chris Prime
And then even then, it's, like, it makes sense of a doctor going, like, hey, you don't want to do that. Even, like, under distress, it's like, I'm a doctor still.
00:33:32
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:33:34
Chris Prime
But, yeah, I'm looking forward to see more of those, like, specials. expansion. I'm really interested now to read the books.
00:33:44
Zach Sheets
Because I think, where is it? there's like two There's like three books in the series or four. like It's definitely... like i mean Yeah.
00:33:49
Chris Prime
Two at least three coming soon. Okay, Okay, what about you? What's your number seven?
00:33:56
Zach Sheets
So my number seven is Frankenstein, the Guillermo del Toro Netflix movie. Basically, Guillermo del Toro's entire career like building up to this moment. like This is what he's been... like like working his way towards because it has it has all of his you know gothic like uh set design and like like gruesome uh body horror stuff and everything he's kind had in the movie we just like take it like this is like the ultimate expression of it now
00:34:25
Zach Sheets
uh Yeah, I think like like like a great adaptation of the the novel, even though they changed like a couple things for the novel change some characters, change some relationships, but having have you read the book like once, like forever ago, I'm not like this like you know a super diehard fan the novel. It's like, you can't change anything!
00:34:46
Zach Sheets
so i didn't really notice the changes.
00:34:47
Chris Prime
Gotcha.
00:34:49
Zach Sheets
And i mean just yeah the cast was all fantastic. Oscar Isaac and Jacob Lordi. yeah yeah my and one My one day Mia Goth kind of gets like wasted in it. She doesn't really have like a lot to do.
00:35:03
Chris Prime
Well, she's just Mia Goth. She stands around and you can take a look at her.
00:35:05
Zach Sheets
yeah even Even though she has like a double role as Frankenstein's mother and then his brother's fiancé. Mm-hmm.
00:35:15
Chris Prime
Did they at least give her, like, a... Yeah, they gave her, like, a good amount of, like, makeup difference, but you could definitely tell it's Mia Goth.
00:35:21
Zach Sheets
okay
00:35:22
Zach Sheets
But yeah, so so much so much great just like the Yablo de Toro, like weird gothic horror stuff. Like I love the scene where like Frankenstein goes to like the the council, like the medical council, and like he has like that half guy that he like brings to life and like has to catch the ball.
00:35:38
Chris Prime
I know, it's...
00:35:38
Zach Sheets
Like...
00:35:41
Zach Sheets
All...
00:35:41
Chris Prime
Just yeah even turning it on, it could have just been old, like, vaudeville stuff.
00:35:46
Chris Prime
But the fact that he's like, no, this is real. It smells real. Take a look at it.
00:35:50
Zach Sheets
Like, Jandy's electrodes into its head.
00:35:53
Zach Sheets
and like, that the like the the lab set, like, that water tower, like, just where it's got, like giant, like, Greek or whatever faces on the wall, and, like, that giant window, like, that whole set, and then, like, those, the the big, like, electrode things that power everything, it's, like, that's all this, like, pure, like, Yelma Toro, and it's, like, only he could probably come up with this stuff.
00:36:15
Chris Prime
Yeah, where did, like, Frankenstein find... He didn't build those sculptures, so where did he get that?
00:36:24
Zach Sheets
it was like i think It was like an old like like water like some sort like factory or something. Or an aqueduct or something.
00:36:34
Zach Sheets
That's why it has like all like the like channels under the under it.
00:36:38
Zach Sheets
But they like but they like what they went... It's basically they like going around like looking for like real estate. like They went to bunch of different places. Like, oh, this place doesn't work. Oh, this giant tower that used to be... Like, whatever it was. Now, that this is the perfect place. It's like on at a cliffside.
00:36:56
Zach Sheets
You can afford it, Christoph Waltz? With all your arm-stealing money? Yeah.
00:37:01
Chris Prime
You know, like when a real estate person wants to build like a thing, you know, it's like they were definitely looking at that place and like we have to save this for a rich evil guy later.
00:37:12
Zach Sheets
yeah It's got, yeah, we've got this this giant, we've got this great window, get a great view, and then there's like a dungeon that below that you can like lock like whatever experiments down in there.
00:37:22
Chris Prime
Great place. This a great place to go mad in.
00:37:27
Zach Sheets
You
00:37:31
Zach Sheets
got this giant staircase.
00:37:34
Zach Sheets
plenty Plenty of room to pack it with explosives if you need to
00:37:37
Chris Prime
It's a failsafe just because.
00:37:38
Zach Sheets
Yep. Mm-hmm.
00:37:40
Chris Prime
Yeah, didn't mind Frankenstein. It's just like, it's sort of like, Frankenstein isn't always like my favorite horror stuff. Maybe because I'm spoiled by like the Hulk.
00:37:54
Chris Prime
But it's a good beginning of things. It's just Frankenstein, once you start, it's just sort of like, all right, well, I'm going look for a companion and meaning a meaning of life. And i'm like, oh boy.
00:38:04
Chris Prime
At least in other but other kind of mediums where the monster is misunderstood and it sort of, like, hates being created. it's It's, like, Dracula is more interesting to me.
00:38:14
Zach Sheets
Okay.
00:38:16
Chris Prime
That's just me. Like, if they did a better Dracula, but, like, when's the last time they made a really good Dracula movie?
00:38:17
Zach Sheets
okay
00:38:22
Zach Sheets
I mean, that's for a two last year. but and It's not Dracula, but basic it's it's Dracula.
00:38:27
Chris Prime
It's, yeah, it's Dracula, but.
00:38:29
Zach Sheets
We're going to look for some one next year. the chart that just came out like last week.
00:38:36
Zach Sheets
But yeah, i just like like and you you can tell Guillermo Toro was just like, this is what he's been waiting to do. like he's been just like dying to like do this for his entire career. and it's just like the style of it and like the horror like the horror aspects of it, it's just like oozing off the screen.
00:38:53
Zach Sheets
So yeah, I thought it was like one of Guillermo Toro's best movies, probably. one of my favorites of his.
00:38:59
Zach Sheets
So what is your number six, Chris?
00:39:02
Chris Prime
Number six for me would be Superman. i really i enjoyed it more than I thought. it It's like Fantastic Four where it's lived in.
00:39:14
Chris Prime
it's so It's a superhero story that is aware that it's superhero story and it doesn't want to retread the parts that everyone kind of knows about the the like premise.
00:39:26
Zach Sheets
Yeah, like even even more than Fantastic Four, like everywhere everyone knows Superman's origin. You don't need to go through it again.
00:39:32
Chris Prime
I do like the twist in this, the Kryptonian message.
00:39:39
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:39:40
Chris Prime
And I really enjoyed the like banter, the james the classic James Gunn self-aware banter and and comments and just the the humor.
00:39:55
Chris Prime
that I feel like he was more just like unhinged to do compared to Marvel versions. I like the part where, forget what's her name, the Lex's girlfriend was ranting off the things she saw out context where it's like, I saw Lex herd a dog and then it's like, Jimmy, she's like, oh my god.
00:40:17
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:40:19
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I feel i feel like that like this was an extremely conscious effort to like just be it the complete opposite of the Snyderverse. Make it like super colorful, super bright, fun, funny. like have like Have it feel super comic book-y.
00:40:33
Chris Prime
And then, like, people keep forgetting that comic books also have, like, messages and they're all algorithms, like, analogies of things, and then it it has messages, political, indirectly or not, and if you find that they are or or not, like, you need to, like, to a child they won't know.
00:40:45
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:40:52
Chris Prime
If they don't know a lot about the world, it seems a really good, like, interesting story, but for the a adult eyes, you can see how, like, themes that start replaying themselves in fiction and reality.
00:41:06
Chris Prime
So I know, like, that's what, like, some of the haters who didn't like the movie aren were complaining about. But as someone who can separate fact and fiction and then see the the artistic intent, I thought it was nice.
00:41:22
Chris Prime
Now, how how well is this going to be on, like, the best Superman movie list? I don't know. i feel like I feel like because they wanted to go with a modern, at least in this era of Superman storytelling, where he's trying not to be world policing things, but like, I mean, who's going to stop him?
00:41:46
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:41:48
Chris Prime
So that was sort of like the other thing he could have said to like the world, like, oh, Lex, you thought, I mean, now that what's going on with the James Gunn universe of things, I don't know what's going happen, but I mean, I'm excited.
00:42:02
Zach Sheets
Yeah. This i mean this this is a great like a great way to kick off this new universe and kind of set set the tone like this is this is what what it's going to be like. It's not dour and dark and brooding. it's It's like super like fun and comic book-y and we're going to have like a bunch of wacky characters.
00:42:21
Zach Sheets
Yeah, definitely excited to see like what ill what what the other movies are going to... Like Supergirl next year, see how how that how that works in this universe.
00:42:30
Chris Prime
yeah
00:42:32
Zach Sheets
And when when we're the next Superman... like Superman, Man of Tomorrow, whatever it's going to be.
00:42:37
Zach Sheets
I mean, all i read everything so far has been great for this universe, like Creature Commandos and Peacemaker Season 2.
00:42:44
Chris Prime
I kind of forgot about Creature Commandos. It's been like the same year.
00:42:47
Zach Sheets
Because that was like cause it was like year yeah it was like a year ago. and That was like the official like the official first thing from the this new universe.
00:42:54
Chris Prime
And it's not acknowledged yet in the real...
00:42:54
Zach Sheets
and it And yeah, they barely they fairlyly they like barely mentioned it.
00:42:56
Chris Prime
Mm-hmm. hu
00:43:01
Zach Sheets
But yeah, my number six is the phenomenon that that is K-Pop Demon Hunters. I mean, the the the most watched Netflix movie of all time by like a huge margin.
00:43:15
Zach Sheets
Like I think like it just like absolutely decimated Red One.
00:43:22
Zach Sheets
Not Red One, Red Notice.
00:43:24
Chris Prime
Red... Red Notas, yeah.
00:43:24
Zach Sheets
The Rock has made too many Red movies. But yeah, Red Nose was like the number one movie for like forever, and then K.O.T. just like destroyed it. But I i watched it like very, very deep into like where it's already been already like hyped up in the phenomenon.
00:43:39
Zach Sheets
so But then... had to watch this to understand what the hell's happening in like pop culture and the world. And then turned out it was like a super fun... you know not Another great entry from Sony Pictures Animation, along with like the Spider-Verse movies and Mitchell's Versus Machines.
00:43:56
Chris Prime
But boy did Sony mess up on not, like, theatrically releasing this movie.
00:44:01
Zach Sheets
Yeah, who, I mean, who knows how many millions of dollars they could have made having to be like an actual theatrical it gonna be a theatrical and you're like, eh, no, we'll we'll sell it to Netflix.
00:44:12
Chris Prime
don't know, they messed up. so Like, I don't know what what marketer or salesperson at Sony just sort of dropped the ball on that.
00:44:30
Chris Prime
Yeah, it was like something like that. They just couldn't distribute it right. Because Sony didn't want to pony up the the cash.
00:44:38
Zach Sheets
But yeah, just like great, you know, great animation. It's got that, it's got that like animated on the twos style that the Sony, and like the Spider-Verse movies have where it's kind of like, it's a little like stuttery, but it adds like the style of it.
00:44:50
Chris Prime
Yeah, it was, like, shaky. You gotta get used to it if this is your first, like, version of it. And then, like, if you didn't see the Spider-Man movies prior...
00:45:02
Zach Sheets
and And they did it with Mitchells vs. Machines, too. that they like That's kind of like their house styles. they do like and then everyone Everyone's kind of copying them now. like that Since the first Spider-Man 2 movie came out, like everyone's doing like this animated M2s kind of thing.
00:45:16
Zach Sheets
But yeah, like it's it's a great mix of you know there's like super fun action, like do you need to like fighting action, but then it's also like super funny, and it has like although the characters are all great, and obviously, but yeah, a ton of horror, and then obviously also'll also the soundtrack is absolutely just like full of just like nonstop bangers.
00:45:27
Chris Prime
It's got heart.
00:45:41
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:45:43
Chris Prime
And if they never made it sequel, it'd still be OK. But I feel like they're now trying to figure out how to make a sequel.
00:45:51
Zach Sheets
yeah it's it's inevitable I mean they're scrambling they they they have to scramble to like come like match like the the hype there's like no merchandise still really for it like they' like we gotta make all the toys and clothes and posters and like all the stuff that we didn't make because we didn't think it was gonna be this huge
00:46:02
Chris Prime
Oh, it's
00:46:11
Zach Sheets
like always like yeah the only thing that really blew up was like the soundtrack because like I think Well, I mean, all the songs ended up on on like the Billboard Hot 100 at was one point, but like Golden was like number one for a week or two.
00:46:24
Chris Prime
it's like up for a grammy
00:46:25
Zach Sheets
yeah I mean, yeah, if if Golden doesn't win like you know Best Original Song at the Oscars, it's going to be like a a riot. It's going to be like like it's to me like when RRR nominated that year
00:46:39
Zach Sheets
i was I mean, personally, i think I think my favorite song is Takedown, but I mean, they're they're they're all great.
00:46:46
Zach Sheets
And it's it's it's one of those rare things where else like it like like lived up to the hype that had been built up, because everyone's just like, keep up Demon Hunters! And like it's like the music was everywhere, memes were everywhere, and it's like, oh, this is actually, it does live up, it's like as good as the hype makes it, the theme.
00:47:03
Chris Prime
Yeah, I think it it won't change your life for a movie, because you've seen probably a good amount of like different versions of the plot beats.
00:47:13
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:47:14
Chris Prime
But it's such an uplifting movie. it's It's got plenty of charm. If you don't watch a lot of like Eastern supernatural things, it's it's different for you.
00:47:30
Chris Prime
Uh... I, uh, like, again, growing up, I've seen a lot of this similar stuff through anime and, like, Chinese movies. And then a few Korean movies are like this.
00:47:41
Chris Prime
Just the behavior. So, it's nice that it's coming into the West. But, you know, it's bizarre. Bizarre is, like, the imitators after this. The, like, weird, like, America pop boy band Demon Hunter.
00:47:50
Zach Sheets
oh yeah
00:47:54
Zach Sheets
they're
00:47:55
Chris Prime
Can't
00:47:58
Zach Sheets
gonna they're gonna pull like they're gonna pull the Backstreet Boys back or something in
00:47:58
Chris Prime
wait for that.
00:48:01
Chris Prime
Yeah, and then they're just singing demon hunters just because.
00:48:07
Zach Sheets
I mean, there's there's there's there's no like current boy band, is there? Like an American boy band? don't there is.
00:48:15
Chris Prime
yet.
00:48:16
Zach Sheets
It's all solo artists right now and the on the pop charts.
00:48:21
Chris Prime
Well, think right now.
00:48:21
Zach Sheets
three we're gonna They're going to form they're gonna form a a boy band for the American version or like the whatever, knock off. This is the new hunting boy band. de mean hunting by bands
00:48:34
Chris Prime
Well, I mean, right now, a lot of those, like, American boy band managers are all getting, like, exposed. So I think it was like, all right, let's just take a break.
00:48:43
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:48:45
Chris Prime
I mean, unless unless Simon Cowell comes back and then forms, like, more singing teams.
00:48:46
Zach Sheets
There's a whole...
00:48:50
Zach Sheets
m Yeah. On the X Factor or wherever wherever, like, one direction came from.
00:48:57
Zach Sheets
Yeah, there was there was a whole documentary last year, I think it was last year on Netflix, about, like, the the guy who managed, like, NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys and how horrible he was.
00:49:04
Chris Prime
Yeah. And like to this day, he's got like a weird contract where he still gets money.
00:49:13
Zach Sheets
But yeah don't yeah, I don't think Count Demon has worry about that stuff. will I will be shocked if they don't like do like some sort of like tour and they they the it's like you know the singing voices for Huntrix, if they don't go on tour. like That also seems like a lost opportunity.
00:49:30
Zach Sheets
Because they've already appeared in like the Macy's Day Parade and various award shows. like If they don't do like a full-on stadium tour, they're like tossing money away. Yeah.
00:49:40
Chris Prime
Well, if we've seen the the the repeat in history, yeah, they'll probably like blow off something so obvious.
00:49:50
Zach Sheets
Yeah, it's like no one wants to go see them actually in concert, do they? Even Even though all the songs like multiple week Billboard Hot 100, the most popular songs in the country.
00:49:59
Chris Prime
like It would be like Disney on Ice.
00:50:02
Zach Sheets
Yes! K.L.D. Myers on Ice. That'd be great. like Or just like big inflatable versions of them all.
00:50:11
Chris Prime
Dancing around, yeah.
00:50:12
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:50:14
Zach Sheets
we definitely We need we need like those like the insane stage shows in the 90s to come back. like When they had like Mortal Kombat live or whatever. Yeah.
00:50:21
Chris Prime
Hmm. I don't know if they do anyone for like musical, like a fake version.
00:50:28
Chris Prime
I mean, yeah, it'd be good if they hired real musicians, but you can also hire just like really good lip syncers and just play this soundtrack.
00:50:33
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:50:33
Chris Prime
Kids won't know. It's meant for like kids.
00:50:36
Zach Sheets
just Yeah, just get like people dressed in like the costumes and just get them out there.
00:50:43
Zach Sheets
Yeah, great great animated movie. pipe but I mean, yeah. the but I mean, the best anime movie I saw this year, because it's the only one on my list. But
00:50:52
Chris Prime
you didn't You saw Predator King of Killers.
00:50:55
Zach Sheets
oh, yeah. yeah Yeah, that was this it's not a real mention, but like, yeah, yeah, that was also like, if you want, like like, you know, super violent, crazy, like, animation.
00:51:09
Chris Prime
That's on my, like, it didn't make my top list, but I enjoyed it.
00:51:11
Zach Sheets
yes Yep.
00:51:13
Zach Sheets
So are we are we up to your number five, Chris?
00:51:17
Chris Prime
So number five for me is The Monkey. We mentioned how we love the Final Destination movie, but The Monkey for me was like a clean slate, like just simple super simple, like dumb, like a very dumb plot.
00:51:36
Chris Prime
But I really enjoyed it
00:51:37
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:51:40
Zach Sheets
Yeah, it's just just an evil toy monkey that if it turns on and collapses, someone dies in an insanely horrific way.
00:51:47
Chris Prime
Yep.
00:51:48
Chris Prime
And, uh...
00:51:49
Zach Sheets
And you can't get rid of it
00:51:51
Chris Prime
No. you you The more you look at it, the more, like, it starts haunting you. But I do like that the monkey didn't do one of those things where someone's trying to help, and then they get killed for trying to help.
00:52:05
Chris Prime
It's a pretty straightforward, this is there's something going on, like someone's in control. the the like, the monkey is, like, the antagonist, but, like, a tool and a secondary antagonist.
00:52:23
Chris Prime
But that's it. It's like a Twilight Zone sort of thing.
00:52:27
Zach Sheets
and And I also like that we didn't we didn't see, like there wasn't like a big reveal like, oh, here's the demon that's actually in the monkey. And now it's like fully revealed. Now it's just an evil toy monkey that like it's just oh it never changes.
00:52:37
Chris Prime
Yep,
00:52:39
Zach Sheets
is like And you you have no idea how it works and you can't understand it
00:52:44
Chris Prime
yeah it's like very simple. That's why I appreciate that.
00:52:48
Chris Prime
But what about you? What's your fifth?
00:52:51
Zach Sheets
So, my number five is Friendship, the A24 Tim Robinson movie, which, man, what what a huge year for Tim Robinson between this and The Chair Company.
00:53:03
Zach Sheets
which what' your boat Okay, so we're we're super close in that one then.
00:53:03
Chris Prime
Yeah. Friendships on my list is number four. four
00:53:11
Zach Sheets
But yeah, I mean, like, the funniest movie I think easily the funniest movie saw this year. I was, like, cackling watching it. Just all these insane Tim Robinson stuff that comes up in it. Like, his style of humor, like that, like like, extremely, like, cringe, embarrassing, but then also, like, hyper-fixated on, like, specific things. It's just, like, that's, like, so so in my wheelhouse. Like, I think you should leave and cheer company in this. They're just, like, the funniest things I've seen.
00:53:40
Zach Sheets
Like, yeah, like his style humor just like is like absolutely works for me all the time. And there's so much like just great, like bizarre, awkward things that happens in this movie.
00:53:50
Chris Prime
You still haven't seen Detroiters, have you?
00:53:52
Zach Sheets
That's the why need to go back and watch Detroit after I've seen all the recent stuff. I have to go back and watch that.
00:53:57
Chris Prime
Mm-hmm.
00:53:58
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:53:59
Chris Prime
Yeah, I think it watching it in the timeline of his evolution as a comic artist is interesting.
00:54:10
Chris Prime
Because if you watch it from SNL to Detroiters to, I think you should leave, to Friendship and The Chair. It's like he you could see like certain callbacks and style, and then if if you love friendship, like go back to Detroiters because it's like that, where it's like weird friendship that like is unhealthy, but there's plenty of like other situations going on.
00:54:43
Chris Prime
It's the same thing with like friendship, again, where the main thing is like this guy trying to maintain a friendship.
00:54:49
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:54:50
Chris Prime
but all the side characters sort of, like, get in the way.
00:54:53
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:54:54
Chris Prime
But, like, what if they just took the time to, it like, both of the, like, Paul Rudd and Tim to, like, address the other things? That's, like, Detroiters.
00:55:03
Zach Sheets
Yeah. it's It's also, it's also like, like, but like The friendship goes bad, and then it's just like Tim Robinson obsessed with making it, but like just like getting it back and doing it, like like going to like the most extreme levels to do it.
00:55:15
Chris Prime
Hmm.
00:55:17
Zach Sheets
or Or trying to like, trying to recapture the friendship with through other things, like dragging his wife into into the sewers. that That whole segment is just like, is so great. like Like his wife just like gets lost in the sewers for like days.
00:55:33
Zach Sheets
And the like the cops show up and are like, where's your wife? She's in the sewers.
00:55:39
Zach Sheets
And then like the whole the whole party, when she comes back, and it's like he's like in the garage by himself playing the with the drum set.
00:55:45
Chris Prime
Yeah. A lot of fun edits. like that That's also really one of his strengths.
00:55:49
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:55:51
Chris Prime
is he He can feel when it's a weird time to cut. And when it happens, it's like very intentional. So it's not like edits in other movies where... I think i think like for me, like there was a scene that gets edited so awkwardly. it Recently, because from Heat, we discussed this.
00:56:10
Zach Sheets
Or
00:56:10
Chris Prime
Where just scenes sort of end... And, like, there has to be very important moments that happen, but none of the characters have to, like, recognize it. It's sort of just like, anyway, next day, time to make my coffee. Like, that's where, like, the humor Tim Robinson's comedy is, like, a quick cut, and that other person just goes, huh, like, let me reflect upon that, like, out loud, or even tell another character.
00:56:37
Chris Prime
But, like, they...
00:56:37
Zach Sheets
or like... or like but so Or like surprising reveals. Like I love that scene where when like he and Paul Rudd are having their like their day outside and they're like collecting mushrooms and he starts they like they they pull back and like Tim Rapps is like sinking in a bog.
00:56:51
Zach Sheets
He's like, oh shit!
00:56:56
Zach Sheets
And also just like little like weird things of like everyone calls Marvel movies Marvel. It's like the new Marvel. No one says any titles. Just like, hey, the new Marvel's out. I heard it's crazy.
00:57:07
Chris Prime
Well, if you think about it, at some point, that's what's going to happen. It's sort of like Star Wars was like that, where it's like, a Star Wars.
00:57:13
Zach Sheets
Star Wars is out. And then, like, i love how it's just like a running thing the whole movie, and then like, when he invites like his like, work friends, quote unquote, his work friends, and they're like spoiling it, he's like, this is a no-spoiler zone, and then eventually just gets like, he just like, ends and so just like, get the fuck out of here! Spoiling the movie!
00:57:32
Chris Prime
Yeah, his comedy is all the thoughts that like people have, but don't want to...
00:57:39
Zach Sheets
The invasive thoughts, he's just like, saying them.
00:57:40
Chris Prime
Yeah, vi yeah it's basically the invasive thought like comedy writer.
00:57:45
Zach Sheets
I
00:57:46
Zach Sheets
and and i just i just love like kind of seeing like when you like you get like the like hint of like the the train wreck that's going to happen like in a like a couple of seconds. You're just like, oh no. No, no what's going to happen? No, not this.
00:58:01
Zach Sheets
And then he like does like the worst thing possible to like make things worse.
00:58:04
Chris Prime
Yep. So it's like, oh, I wouldn't done that. It's like, I wouldn't have done that either.
00:58:05
Chris Prime
Yeah,
00:58:06
Zach Sheets
that's that's one my That's one my favorite pieces.
00:58:08
Zach Sheets
It's just seeing the train wreck start to happen.
00:58:12
Chris Prime
like, you just can't look away, unlike other movies where the train wreck's happening, and you're like, uh, I'm so uncomfortable.
00:58:19
Chris Prime
This one is like, oh, let's just see where this goes next.
00:58:25
Zach Sheets
So yeah, just like if if you're if you're in like the wavelength of Tim Robinson, like it's it's like it's just absolutely like hysterical. like It's one of the funniest things ever.
00:58:35
Zach Sheets
and the and And the chair cover, too, is just like it's like it's like that stretched out to like even beyond like a movie length. Now it's like it's like you know it's eight episodes, whatever it is.
00:58:45
Zach Sheets
Which, are you... i think i think as I checked in, you were like, are you like halfway through the cheer company, Chris?
00:58:50
Chris Prime
Yeah. So, still walking through it. Probably catch it up in like a week.
00:58:54
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:58:58
Zach Sheets
Yeah, that one-two punch was like just like, oh man, what what what a crazy year for Tim Robinson. Yeah.
00:59:05
Zach Sheets
like just like next, taking up to the next level, even though, even though, like, I think you should leave was like huge. Like that was like one, of like, i feel like that's like one of those talked about Netflix shows recently in like recent years. And that's, it's like, it's all over. Like, you know, there's it's be so so many memes and like, it's like clips of that are everywhere.
00:59:23
Zach Sheets
But now there's like an HBO show and a giant movie.
00:59:26
Chris Prime
Yeah, so. But the chair hasn't been, like, memed yet.
00:59:32
Zach Sheets
Yeah, like I mean, there's definitely there's stuff few those things that you could like but pull from the chair company, but also i wonder if people are just like like trying not to spoil it, just because it's a serialized TV show. and it's also like a kind a conspiracy thriller, so you don't want to like spoil like the the investigation or the mystery of it.
00:59:49
Chris Prime
That means there's someone waiting, but they're going to be polite. So that's good. At least that's like an understood thing.
00:59:58
Zach Sheets
Also, there's like just there's some stuff in Cherokee where it's just like, even if you like showed it like out of a context, like you would have people have no idea what the fuck is happening. like and Have you gotten to a part where like you're like the Mike, the but fire investigator, he listens to like it's like a prank show, or like a prank like it's like Jerky Boys, but them just like yelling just like just the most insane shit.
01:00:19
Chris Prime
Yeah.
01:00:21
Zach Sheets
It's like, this is so funny! It's just like a guy just like yelling obscenities constantly.
01:00:26
Chris Prime
They're, like, calling each other weird names, and then you're like, okay.
01:00:28
Zach Sheets
yeah
01:00:30
Chris Prime
No, but it's also, like, that's the feeling you get when you listen to someone, like, recommendation to something, and you're like, I i don't know what's going on.
01:00:37
Zach Sheets
a
01:00:41
Zach Sheets
but uh so you said your number four was also friendship so what's your number three chris
01:00:44
Chris Prime
Yep.
01:00:47
Zach Sheets
Or should oh should I do my number four, I guess? Because then we'll be sync. So but my number four is Ballerina. i guess from the world of John Wick Ballerina, if you want use the entire title.
01:00:58
Chris Prime
Use the full title.
01:00:59
Zach Sheets
Yeah. But yeah, just i think I think definitely lived up to you know the John Wick universe. Even though there might be some issues or questions about how it actually fits in the like timeline. Just like action-wise, I think it's up there with like what we saw in the last couple of ones, like three and four, as far as action.
01:01:21
Zach Sheets
Especially, like there's like stuff with with like like the flamethrower duel toward the end, where it's just two people just like fighting each other with flamethrowers. I don't think we've ever seen anything like that in like an action movie before.
01:01:32
Zach Sheets
And then then like the doing like like a fire hose versus a flamethrower, like the water versus fire kind of thing.
01:01:39
Zach Sheets
And then we got the hint of in No Time to Die, like Anna D'Armas, like the best scene in that movie, but like her, Daniel Craig in that action sequence.
01:01:51
Zach Sheets
And it's like, oh, she should get her own action. Like what would happen if she got her own like a full action movie? And it's like, oh yeah, it's awesome.
01:01:59
Zach Sheets
And you can really tell she put in the Keanu Reeves level of work to learn all the choreography. She gets the absolute shit kicked out of her in that movie. She's getting thrown all over the place and getting knocked down and thrown through things.
01:02:13
Zach Sheets
she's She's doing it all. So, yeah gary yeah, your credit for like yeah like putting in the work.
01:02:16
Chris Prime
I give her credit it for that. doing some stunts.
01:02:20
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
01:02:21
Chris Prime
I mean, she's it's hard to be in that same John Wick universe and not have that same energy like Keanu Reeves. It'd be weird if they did like John Wick universe story and then just like don't follow the same fight methods and put the dedication that like you sign up for this kind type of action movie.
01:02:44
Zach Sheets
I mean, that was that was kind of the Continental.
01:02:46
Chris Prime
Yeah, but that was also like Keacock.
01:02:49
Zach Sheets
I feel like the Continental, like, it kicked off with, like, a John Wick-style action sequence where it's like, this is what you guys want, right? And then the guy never reached that level again the rest of the show.
01:02:57
Chris Prime
Yeah. I like the story.
01:03:01
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
01:03:02
Chris Prime
and didn't mind the story. Just the the fights weren't super memorable except for like maybe the crazy twins.
01:03:09
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm. Yep.
01:03:10
Chris Prime
but like they the Especially the Vietnamese woman fighting the one like flexible twin.
01:03:18
Chris Prime
But and I didn't, again, I love almost anything all John Wick. It's just that the ballerina kind of falls flat on expanding the world.
01:03:29
Chris Prime
Like, it's like cool set pieces, but to me, I'm like, what does this all mean?
01:03:34
Zach Sheets
I mean i mean think like the main new thing is that there's like an entire like like like Eastern European village that's all assassins.
01:03:40
Chris Prime
I mean, that's gone now.
01:03:41
Zach Sheets
yeah
01:03:44
Zach Sheets
Yeah. And know and the and the plot the plot is kind of like like it's not it's kind of like like a you know it's a simple revenge plot of, oh yeah, I gotta kill the guy who killed my dad.
01:03:54
Zach Sheets
But i mean but the John Wick level of action and that kind of like elevates it, definitely for me. you know like just all the all the crazy set pieces all the kind creative ways of like coming up with stuff to do like there's also that there's also that like scene which i i love this version of she goes like that like the the gun dealer the the gun sommelier and you're you're you're gonna get like the that scene again like the second one where it's like describing all the guns and someone then also just they blow it through the door and like start like shooting everybody
01:04:23
Chris Prime
you
01:04:24
Zach Sheets
So it's like that that like the like calm kind of like wine tasting so style of like gun selection gets interrupted. then and arms has no gun. So she's using grenades the entire your fight. She's like throwing grenades at people and using them like insane ways.
01:04:43
Zach Sheets
And then like the the fight with like like Daniel Bernhardt, who I... like Somehow... like He's a different character, even though he's already in John Wick. Maybe it's like his twin or something, but...
01:04:55
Zach Sheets
they have They have a great fight. So yeah, i just I just thought like that, like action wise, even if like the plot was like a little like like simple, like I i thought it was like up to like this, definitely up to like the level, like the, especially like the latter John Wick's. I don't, it wasn't up to like John Wick chapter four level, which like one of the greatest action movies ever made.
01:05:13
Zach Sheets
But I definitely put it alongside three.
01:05:16
Chris Prime
Yeah, like it's on that three level caliber.
01:05:20
Zach Sheets
Although, I mean, it didn't do that well, so i don't know if we're going to get any sort of other, like, any more, like, Andi-Armiss sequels or, like, any other spin-offs, but...
01:05:28
Chris Prime
I like her character. Like, I just want her in other things, like, besides the origin story.
01:05:29
Zach Sheets
oh
01:05:35
Zach Sheets
Yeah, if they're doing, like, whatever they're doing for five, if they, you know, bring her in at some point, that'd be fun.
01:05:42
Zach Sheets
so now So now, what's your number three, Chris?
01:05:45
Chris Prime
So my number three was Friendship, but my number four is Wake Up Dead Man.
01:05:52
Zach Sheets
Oh,
01:05:53
Chris Prime
I recently saw that, and i love a good murder mystery, and I love good murder mystery that has, like, a lot of quirky characters.
01:06:04
Chris Prime
And it was a toss-up. I actually watched Wake Up Dead Man and The Woman in Cabin 10 in the same day to see which one I would like more.
01:06:11
Zach Sheets
yep. Mm-hmm.
01:06:14
Chris Prime
And I think Wake Up Dead Man definitely won it out. But if you want the same kind of premise of like an impossible murder in a small confined thing, like a boat in the woman in Cabin 10 and in a church for Wake Up Dead Man, don't It's an interesting premise for both.
01:06:41
Chris Prime
But Wake Up Dead Man, definitely, like it's hard to beat a Rian Johnson mystery. Just from the cinematic sense, just to Daniel Cray, the caliber of actor he's able to corral to be in this.
01:06:56
Zach Sheets
Yeah, he's he's like so like honed in on Benoel Block now, after like three movies.
01:07:03
Chris Prime
The... the
01:07:06
Chris Prime
thing about the movie, too, is, like, I'm not a religious person, and this movie is a little bit of both, where it also goes, hey, you don't need to be religious to enjoy this movie, but we're going to talk about religion in terms of, like, community and being good.
01:07:23
Chris Prime
So, I want to give, like, that, like, a very good highlight, because if you don't really know that, if you think it's going to be some sort of, like, religion as a plot device, and it's It gets like, you can go down a giant list of shows, especially like shows in the UK that have murder mysteries with like a priest.
01:07:47
Chris Prime
Where the priest is like the psychic or the one investigating the murder. There's a lot of them. It's more than I thought.
01:07:56
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I think, so I put this on as honorable mention, definitely. But I think, the like, the thing from, I feel like they leaned a little bit too more, much into, like, the social commentary stuff of, like, like you know, the church, like,
01:08:09
Zach Sheets
like church stuff like you mentioned like it's like what is the role of the church or what she' should be trying to do that but and also it's like like you know very obvious like trump commentary like josh brolin is basically is trump and then like all and then like like kind of satirizing like people like maga like like i sort like Like Andrew Scott is like like like writing like like some some terrible right-wing book, and then they're all just like blindly, like whatever.
01:08:40
Zach Sheets
it's like He has a line of like, but yeah, well what it doesn't matter we say, we'll follow you, no matter what it is.
01:08:46
Chris Prime
Yeah.
01:08:48
Chris Prime
it's it's It's definitely like
01:08:51
Chris Prime
of its terror, a commentary.
01:08:53
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
01:08:54
Chris Prime
But that's what, like, at least the first, the, the, like, Glass Onion and, uh, in this do.
01:08:54
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
01:09:04
Chris Prime
Because that was a problem with Glass Onion. I liked Glass Onion, but the social commentary on it was a little too, like, beat you over the head. Here, it's like, you definitely, now there's an archetype now of certain things.
01:09:10
Zach Sheets
yeah
01:09:15
Chris Prime
And it's gonna be hard to not reference it when you know this is, like, a real-life like issue. It's like way more common to see a person who's power tripping on like low level power and just kind of making blind allegiances.
01:09:30
Zach Sheets
using Using fear to keep people in line and like make like making everyone else like the enemy and
01:09:36
Chris Prime
Well that that was like the point was there's the one version of that and then the father Judd's version where like you don't do that you you always
01:09:45
Zach Sheets
so Yeah, we should we we should be showing compassion. We should be like wel welcoming everybody.
01:09:49
Chris Prime
So that's like the message, maybe because I'm just a sucker for good nature stuff in my murder mysteries.
01:09:54
Zach Sheets
hmm.
01:09:57
Chris Prime
But like that, it's close to the first movie, too, where, you know,
01:10:04
Chris Prime
Arma Damasis.
01:10:05
Zach Sheets
And Armus.
01:10:06
Chris Prime
Yeah, shes she's also like, oh, I i could have been greedy and that would have been my downfall. But because she did good, she did this and that wasn't religious. It was just more like be a good person.
01:10:17
Zach Sheets
yeah and i thought like ben malblanc got a little bit side like he yeah sidelined a little bit i thought i felt like like it took an hour for him to show up like properly in the movie
01:10:22
Chris Prime
Oh, he did.
01:10:27
Chris Prime
Well, that was the the clever plot device of it, where that hour has to pass in order for the hour that he reads everything to catch up.
01:10:40
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
01:10:41
Chris Prime
So I don't mind that.
01:10:41
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
01:10:44
Chris Prime
I definitely knew that the murder was a little off based on like when you see the body where It's like more blood was happening at the at the grouping and all that. And was like, okay, I think I know what happened.
01:10:58
Chris Prime
Like, I called it a little bit in my head. And then when I saw it, I was like, yeah, okay, certain parts are exactly what I thought. I thought there would be something way more important during, like, some of the flashbacks at, like, certain parties and stuff.
01:11:16
Chris Prime
But it didn't play. also, I think I hallucinated, it was... What is his name?
01:11:24
Chris Prime
One of the characters. Like, it's just like... One of the characters shows up.
01:11:31
Chris Prime
Uh, Clifton Collins Jr.? Was he in it
01:11:35
Zach Sheets
no
01:11:36
Chris Prime
What?
01:11:38
Chris Prime
There's a character that looks like him.
01:11:41
Zach Sheets
Like, in, like, the main, like, like a side character? Like, like the the main, like, like church group?
01:11:47
Chris Prime
No, he's just like, I thought he was in it as a like a background character for like a scene where like when Father Judd was like meeting the people and they're having like a barbecue outside or something, I swore I thought I saw some famous people i thought that going to be like a callback to something, but like it was just nothing. you know I was like, who's this? And this is like, oh, never mind.
01:12:13
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
01:12:15
Chris Prime
So, again, if you're, like, eagle-eyeing the movie until it actually sets up what they're going to do I enjoyed it.
01:12:25
Chris Prime
Like, it made me think a bit, but it also, like, a answered all my questions of the mystery and stuff. It was, like, super straightforward and and then just a giant explanation at the end.
01:12:39
Zach Sheets
Yeah, i think I think the main thing for me was like, I just like, I would want to prefer like more like Benoit Blanc, like investigating. Because, and like, kind of like putting putting together like pieces because you get a little, you get a couple that and then it's just like, you sort of like, it's like, you get the end. He's like, oh, I figured it out. like We didn't really we really like go through a lot of evidence, but I figured out. There's like, there's like two pieces of evidence that he figures out.
01:13:05
Zach Sheets
so i then So I kind of like wish to rat the ratio of like the social commentary to like Benoit Blanc, you know, investigating things I felt what should have been like a little more balanced or.
01:13:14
Chris Prime
Gotcha. Understood. Yeah, you want more Southern fried detective.
01:13:20
Zach Sheets
Yeah, him like questioning people and, you know, noticing things and doing his like Columbo thing.
01:13:27
Zach Sheets
But yeah, my number three is Superman, which we already you know dove into. i think we We also did an entire podcast about it this year, so if we can go back list of that.
01:13:38
Zach Sheets
But yeah, just i think a great start to dc the new DC universe. I loved how fun it was. I loved, like, Damon Cornswept seems like like a like a really great Superman. Like, he's got that Christopher Reeve energy. Yeah.
01:13:51
Zach Sheets
and all the side characters they like the justice gang and all all that like crazy comic book stuff was all super fun mr mr terrific we didn't mention earlier but like it just like steals the entire movie it's like the best gets like the best action movie with the entire movie
01:14:08
Chris Prime
Yeah, James Gunn musical action scene.
01:14:11
Zach Sheets
yep so what is what is your number two chris
01:14:12
Chris Prime
Always a classic.
01:14:16
Chris Prime
So mine is K-Bob Demon Hunter. we
01:14:18
Zach Sheets
Okay.
01:14:19
Chris Prime
You pretty much highlight all the parts that you enjoyed, and more so for me, because it was just generally like a surprising movie, but like not so surprising if they marketed it right.
01:14:35
Chris Prime
And then just like, it's like a great anime. So I know watched a lot of the like anime movies that came out that got big releases like Chainsaw Man and Jusukeisen got like an anime release.
01:14:54
Chris Prime
I heard those.
01:14:54
Zach Sheets
I think what I read about the Jutsu Kaisen was that it was like it was like just like a clip kind of like recap movie or something. It's just like show scenes from like the previous seasons or like... Because don't they do that? Are are those movies just like basically like clip shows or just like like a two hour long recap of things?
01:15:13
Chris Prime
Sometimes, or they they're like they will reanimate the clip. So like instead of, they'll take the TV show quality and then like focus in on it so that it looks better.
01:15:23
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I know Demon Slayer Infinity Cat was like the like like an absolute like juggernaut this year. like That was like a huge like one of the biggest movies of the worldwide.
01:15:32
Chris Prime
Yeah, that was like its own like plot.

The Rise of Anime in Mainstream Cinema

01:15:34
Chris Prime
That would have been almost like five episodes in one.
01:15:39
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I think there's like there's like four or five like huge like anime movies this year. but it's like it's like it's but it's like It's definitely becoming like like a like a... It used to be like a really niche thing.
01:15:49
Zach Sheets
but like Oh, it's in like two theaters. now Now it's like yeah it's in like why super wide release.
01:15:52
Chris Prime
But now...
01:15:55
Zach Sheets
They're all making like yeah i'll making it like millions of dollars. so
01:15:59
Chris Prime
there's money in them cartoons again.
01:16:00
Zach Sheets
it's it's only it's yeah It's only getting bigger.
01:16:03
Chris Prime
but How about you? What's your number two?

Exploring the Vampire Horror Movie 'Sinners'

01:16:06
Zach Sheets
My number two is Sinners. Just like, like fantastic, you know, vampire horror movie. Just, and just like oozing style from Ryan Coogler's like the, like the the setting and the way everything looks is like great.
01:16:21
Zach Sheets
Another great musical movie. Like, you know, we had like, what's your number?
01:16:23
Chris Prime
Hold on, hold on. Do we skip on number three?
01:16:26
Zach Sheets
Okay. Yeah. Yeah.
01:16:27
Chris Prime
My three's number is sinners.
01:16:29
Zach Sheets
okay i yeah must
01:16:30
Chris Prime
So we'll just talk about that.
01:16:31
Zach Sheets
buts got the up yeah ahre we're just like friendship we're close on the both those so yeah
01:16:37
Chris Prime
No, but go for it. You're explaining exactly what's using it, what Ragnar Kluge got right.
01:16:42
Zach Sheets
Yeah, like and not like a great like musical movie, you know, like, Keanu Demon Hunters and a couple like, just like, but like, the the music in this one is like super important to the plot, or like just and everything. And some great songs like that, that that middle, like that, it's just sort of beginning of like that scene where like, it kind of like goes through like the decades into the future, kind of, and you get like Bootsy Collins-esque guitars happening and like all this other stuff happening, like rap.
01:17:07
Zach Sheets
And just, it's kind of like reaching out to like the future, that whole sequence is crazy.
01:17:12
Chris Prime
Yeah, wanted more of that. I wanted to show the repercussions of, or, like, the consequences of certain, like, traditions that still are echoing, that are, like, you know, are timeless. So it doesn't matter if it's, like, from a simple origin or where it is, but it it shows a great, like, care in reflecting,
01:17:37
Chris Prime
each little slot in history, but they like stop that by the second act. They're like, okay, that was fun. First visual act one thing, but
01:17:45
Zach Sheets
Yeah, nothing like that ever happened again in the movie.
01:17:47
Chris Prime
yeah.
01:17:51
Zach Sheets
And yeah, just like a fantastic Michael B. Jordan double role, which this is also like a great year for like double roles because like the monkey also had like a dual role. think there was like one or two other movies that had like someone playing like twins or double roles.
01:18:10
Zach Sheets
But, I mean, this is probably the best one. And, like, is the way that Michael Jordan was able to, like, make get them, like, both, like, super distinct, but like, personalities, so you, like, knew which which one it was all the time, it was, like, confusing about who he was playing.
01:18:23
Zach Sheets
And just, like, the...
01:18:23
Chris Prime
Well, one brother licked, or like, what is it, like, drank spit? So, yeah. That was like, alright, that's the freakier one.
01:18:32
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Well, one one is like one is, like, the more, like, serious brother who's, like, like and then... The one is like kind of like like like more like loosening up. kind of like we'rere We're having fun. it's like We're running this speakeasy.
01:18:46
Zach Sheets
like Loosen up kind of thing.
01:18:47
Chris Prime
Mm-hmm.
01:18:50
Zach Sheets
and yeah jack Jack O'Connell was just like a fantastic... fit like One of the best horror villains of the year. He's just like... charming, but, like, super, like, dangerous vampire, like, Irish vampire, which, that's also, like, you don't really see a lot of, like, Irish vampires at all in, like, movies, so that was, like a fun twist on, like, that that kind of the vampire villain archetype.
01:19:14
Zach Sheets
And, like, his motivations of, no, he wants to, like, the like, use the music to, like, get back like like kind of get back his...
01:19:25
Zach Sheets
When he lost from like Ireland. Because they can play the music and then no because of like Sammy's powers, he can like make it real.
01:19:40
Chris Prime
I thought it...
01:19:41
Zach Sheets
Because cause his his music he plays music so well that like basically... Like yeah like that scene we mentioned it where like it's like he can reach across like time basically and... like
01:19:51
Zach Sheets
go into the past, go in the future, and kind of like bring it all together. And then just just just some some great, like, you know, just horror stuff. Like, great, like, bloody, like, vampire kills and action.
01:20:04
Chris Prime
It did remind me of like Dusk to Dawn.
01:20:06
Zach Sheets
Yes, I mean, that's probably, like, one of inspirations are kind like, people, like, pointed it out. Like, yeah, this is, like, more like, I don't know, like, I don't know if you're it's like elevated from Nestledon. Because from Nestledon is super like riot house-y and like like ridiculous.
01:20:26
Zach Sheets
This kind has awards aspirations, probably. awards like aspirations foly
01:20:33
Chris Prime
Yeah.
01:20:33
Zach Sheets
but but But still, not it's not like it's not like full 824 elevated horror. it is like It's like still like fun, gory horror. But like with like the way it looks and the acting, it's kind of like in like that awards contention.
01:20:50
Chris Prime
Yeah, they tried to do more grounded performance and try not to lead into comedy. Because they wanted to keep the horror elements very supernatural but dramatic.
01:21:06
Chris Prime
Because it couldn't easily been a comedy. You could take the same premise of Sinners and just make it into a comedy.
01:21:13
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I mean, like, for for yeah, for Nostradone has, like, so much, like, wacky, like, you know Thomas Lomini with the dick gun and all and all the one-liners and everything in that movie. That's what this's what this could have been.
01:21:24
Zach Sheets
Which is also, I mean, for Nostradone is, like, super fun as well. But that was never going to, like, be, you know, an Oscar contender. Yeah.
01:21:35
Zach Sheets
But yeah just yeah, super stylish, like just the music, the everything everything just came together in like an awesome way for sinners.
01:21:45
Zach Sheets
And then I think we both have the the same number one, right Chris?
01:21:50
Chris Prime
Yep. Weapons.
01:21:52
Zach Sheets
Which is weapons, yeah.
01:21:55
Zach Sheets
Which, yet yeah, between weapons and sinners and Finalist Nation, the monkey, like what what a...
01:21:59
Chris Prime
K-pop Demon Hunter.
01:22:00
Zach Sheets
I was going to say, like, for horror, like, a great year for horror.
01:22:04
Chris Prime
K-pop Demon Hunter is technically little horror.
01:22:07
Zach Sheets
I guess it has demons, but, they yeah, that i they're not that particularly scary or threatening, but, except, I guess, yep.
01:22:11
Chris Prime
They killed an old man.
01:22:14
Zach Sheets
I guess, yeah yeah, I guess the demons, well, the demons Cape Town are, like, stealing people's souls or something.
01:22:18
Chris Prime
Yeah.
01:22:19
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I guess, I guess, it's pretty horrific, even though it's, like, it's offset by, like, yeah, by, like, super, because, because, like, you have, like,
01:22:23
Chris Prime
It's downplayed. It's downplayed.
01:22:27
Zach Sheets
just like pop bangers playing in the background so you don't really notice it that much.
01:22:31
Chris Prime
There should have been a scene where like a fan is talking to one of the idols and then like goes home and then gets their soul taken and then the people find out like and are just devastated but mad. That that should have been that grounding, uniting...
01:22:49
Chris Prime
act, but...
01:22:49
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
01:22:50
Chris Prime
No, there's an old man that dies, and they're like, oh well, more songs.
01:22:54
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.

Zack Greger's 'Weapons': A New Horror Epic

01:22:57
Zach Sheets
But weapons, like, the follow you know, follow-up to our bri Barbarian by Zack Greger. And kind like like, a horror, like, epic, because it's just, like, you know, it's multiple characters. It's, like, a Rashomon of following these different, like, storylines and going back and, like, looking and then seeing the things from a different perspective.
01:23:17
Chris Prime
Yeah, I like that it follows different aspects of this crazy mystery. And then if you really didn't look at like trailers or spoilers whatever, the the like escalation to what goes on is wild.
01:23:38
Zach Sheets
Yeah, there was there was there was like kind of like not a lot of hint of like where the movie was like heading, for like especially it like toward the ending.
01:23:45
Zach Sheets
the The show did a great job just kind of like like yeah like building the mystery, but not revealing a like a lot of what was happening.
01:23:53
Zach Sheets
And then I love the multi-perspective thing I love, because you kind of like you saw something in like one person's story, and then you like got the context of it, like or different context in another person's story. She's like, oh, that's totally everything that I thought it was in the other person's like story.
01:24:10
Zach Sheets
And like the way they all connect in the end is is is like just done in a super like smart way. like Everyone kind of like comes together and like toward in the ending.
01:24:19
Chris Prime
yeah i i do enjoy like it's its own anthology experience that unites them based on this like supernatural circumstance And the movie was pretty good if expectations of it being, like, very supernatural.
01:24:39
Chris Prime
There's no, like, surprise. It was a gas, you know, all along.
01:24:44
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
01:24:45
Chris Prime
Or there's, like, you know, it was a simulation.
01:24:51
Chris Prime
But I... Everything that, like, I liked about the movies this year of just, like, you know, smart plot or... clever like pacing.
01:25:03
Chris Prime
Or even... like I mean, we didn't really talk so much about gore. About, oh man, we love like the art. If they use it well, practical or not. But there's something about a movie that just knows how to use like grotesque visuals at the right moment.
01:25:20
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
01:25:20
Chris Prime
I think, like, in the Monkees case, it was, like, humorous, and then you're you're supposed to, like, watch it for the kills.
01:25:29
Chris Prime
Where weapons, the the kills are sort of like, oh, man, like, it's it's just, like, escalating, and the there really isn't any kind of, like, like you know, like, blood monster or, like, a slasher. It's sort of just like, oh, no, like, this is happening. They're turning.
01:25:49
Zach Sheets
No, you have, like, probably going to be, like, a new horror icon, Aunt Gladys.
01:25:55
Chris Prime
I've seen an Aunt Gladys cosplay people, but it's simple.
01:25:57
Zach Sheets
Yeah, i feel i feel like I feel like she's going to be, like, up there like, you know, Art the Clown or something in, and like, a little bit of, like...
01:26:06
Chris Prime
Oh, so much more when the prequel stuff.
01:26:08
Zach Sheets
and yeah Which yeah I'm not sure about the prequel, but... Because I feel like we get, like, the perfect amount of Aunt Gladys in this movie. I don't know if we, like, know exactly where she came from.
01:26:18
Chris Prime
More. Whatever cave she crawled out of.
01:26:21
Zach Sheets
But Amy Madigan just like absolutely crushing it as Aunt Gladys. Just being like kind of like almost senile or innocent. and like innocent it's been like oh when she like She goes to school to talk to Benedict Wong and then like turning on a dime and just being i'm trying i'm yeah, now I'm evil. I'm turning you into a weapon.
01:26:40
Chris Prime
I'm becoming the weapon. Mm-hmm.
01:26:41
Zach Sheets
Yeah, i'm turning you all into I'm turning you into a weapon.
01:26:45
Zach Sheets
And then the the process of like, her process of, like, with the you know, the stick and, like, the whole ritual. I love that they don't, like, explain it, but you understand the rules of how it works just through, like, the context of it. it' so like It's done in such like a great way. And then at the when do you another character is able to figure it out and uses it against her at the end, it's just like, oh, yeah, thats that makes sense because they they watched and, like, learned how it worked.
01:27:12
Zach Sheets
And man that then the ending, without without spoiling it, like that ending is like total not what you expect at all. It's such a crazy shift.
01:27:22
Zach Sheets
But it's so great.
01:27:25
Zach Sheets
it's's It's also like it's like a it's like a throwback to like Zach Greger's comedy. Yeah.
01:27:30
Chris Prime
It may basically becomes just like outrageous skit.
01:27:35
Zach Sheets
Obviously, he came from like the way as kids you know. And yeah, that the whole ending is just like this like crazy, it just turns like this, yeah, like over the top, like chaos is happening. After After kind of like a so like you know a slower burn, like, you know, like more serious tone to the whole movie rest of the movie. And then it's just like, oh, wow, this is like, not what i expected, to but it's it's it's awesome. It's like, super cathartic because the people are getting what they like deserve.
01:28:10
Chris Prime
I think it's because it's like a giant release from just like the everyday horrors of the world so when you watch a really good horror movie that takes its time to build up like the mystery I think like that's why it resonates with like movie watchers like me and you which is also a lot of people who also enjoyed weapons
01:28:27
Zach Sheets
But then also... Yeah, but it also it doesn't like... Things don't resolve... easily, because the ending is like well, things wrapped up but like people are still fucked up by this.
01:28:42
Chris Prime
Yeah, no, no one's like, just because they they figured out who did it, it doesn't mean that, like, it's all fixed. It's like, everyone's gotta to live with like, this knowledge, and then...
01:28:50
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
01:28:53
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
01:28:54
Chris Prime
How do you tell, like, someone that about this, like, this supernatural

The Unresolved Trauma in Horror Films

01:28:59
Chris Prime
thing, you know? it
01:29:01
Chris Prime
I get horror movies always have to assume that everyone just goes, oh man, we're all shook. And then that's it. like Movies always end right after like the big reveal of something exists or like, I survived this. And there's no like the next day when they're like trying to get anyone to like listen to them.
01:29:22
Chris Prime
Very few movies have that.
01:29:24
Zach Sheets
it always It always ends with like the ambulance rolls up. They're in the ambulance. Man, that was crazy, but we're we're through it now.
01:29:30
Chris Prime
yeah Or it becomes like, okay, no, we threw you into Looney Bin. Or you become Sarah Connor, and then you get like Terminator 2'd.
01:29:37
Zach Sheets
yeah
01:29:42
Chris Prime
i think that's like the only mainstream movie I know where the protagonist just keeps warning people about things, and then like they don't believe you. But like she also became like a domestic terrorist.
01:29:55
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
01:29:56
Chris Prime
I think she did it wrong by doing that, where... I haven't seen another movie where, like, they try to really put up a fight to say, like, oh no, we've been trying to tell people for, like, years about, like, you some doom.
01:30:10
Chris Prime
But, yeah, I don't think they're ever doing a Weapons 2, so...

Speculation on Zack Greger's 'Resident Evil' Movie

01:30:14
Zach Sheets
Yeah. hopeful I mean, We'll see about the same last prequel if that happens. And I think and i think the next thing that Craig is doing is like, is he doing the Resident Evil movie now?
01:30:24
Chris Prime
Yeah.
01:30:25
Zach Sheets
Which, I mean, he's, I mean, but like this and Barbarian were both great.
01:30:26
Chris Prime
I
01:30:31
Zach Sheets
So hopefully Resident Evil is is like like, he does a finally good Resident Evil movie.
01:30:35
Chris Prime
i don't know. he he did say He did say that the new Resident Evil movie isn't based on the games.
01:30:36
Zach Sheets
me
01:30:40
Chris Prime
It's like, oh, no, we're doing it like something else. And i'm like, oh, God.
01:30:44
Zach Sheets
it's like in the It's like in the world of Resident Evil, but it's not specifically like a game. It's not Resident Evil 2, the movie, or something like
01:30:51
Chris Prime
I don't know. the i haven't heard about it a little bit because just remember when they said it, a lot of people were like, hmm, it wasn't ideal to hear. But from what I understood was that they're not using any of the games as like a guide. So for all we know, it could be like, oh, no, we made these, you know, worms that give you the zombie plague.
01:31:10
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
01:31:10
Chris Prime
That's what I'm afraid of.
01:31:13
Zach Sheets
Well, hopefully it's at least better than the Netflix show.
01:31:18
Chris Prime
It can't get any worse. Sure.
01:31:20
Zach Sheets
Yeah. I think we've seen the low point.
01:31:25
Zach Sheets
Where the T-Ribus makes you dance to du a Lipa, like lipstick Dua Lipa.
01:31:31
Zach Sheets
I guess, quick, if you want to run down some honorable mentions, Chris.
01:31:35
Chris Prime
sure For me, Thunderbolts. I liked it. I think one or two scenes are cool. Just the overarching story was just like superheroes not going to therapy.
01:31:50
Chris Prime
What about you with another Arbor mention for you?
01:31:53
Zach Sheets
Oh, I was going to say, like, just run through them all quick. like and And then we'll get we'll look to our worst lists.
01:31:57
Chris Prime
Okay, so for me... Okay, so let me do my... So besides Thunderbolts, Nobody 2. Predator King Killers played Dirty, and The Woman in Cabin 10.
01:32:04
Zach Sheets
All
01:32:10
Zach Sheets
And then I have Novocaine. I have the Naked Gun. the the bed the sequel reboots. Companion.
01:32:21
Zach Sheets
Yeah, but both both both you know fun, solid Jack Quaid movies this year.
01:32:27
Chris Prime
people I think Hollywood just wants us to love Jack Quaid, which I'm fine. He seems nice.
01:32:34
Zach Sheets
Yeah, both those were pretty fantastic. Predator Killer Killers. VHS Halloween. you know continuing the the great Shudder took over and they've been just cranking out great VHS entries.
01:32:49
Zach Sheets
Clown in a Cornfield, Thunderbolts, Fear Street Prom Queen, which i like I totally forgot came out and I was like going through the was like, oh yeah, that came out. that's like If you want a straightforward solid slasher, Fear Street Prom Queen.
01:33:03
Zach Sheets
Nobody 2, Sisu Wrote to Revenge, which is just like somehow even more over the top than the first one. Like there's some stuff in there, like in the, in the Avengers, it's like physics defying insanity, but still like, if if you like the first one, you'll definitely like this the second one, a Minecraft movie and wake up dead man.

Most Disappointing Movies of 2025

01:33:28
Zach Sheets
So let's, let let's run through our, the worst movies are maybe like the most disappointing movies of the year.
01:33:33
Chris Prime
Okay.
01:33:34
Zach Sheets
so what what's So what's your fifth most disappointing or worst movie, Chris?
01:33:38
Chris Prime
So my disappointing movie is Locked. It's just, you know, sorry, my number fifth is Locked. The Anthony Hopkins evil car-like driving movie where he throws in a Pennywise in a car and he he pisses him off.
01:33:45
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
01:33:57
Zach Sheets
yeah
01:33:59
Chris Prime
How long do you think that this this this like movie takes place over?
01:34:06
Zach Sheets
I mean, I feel like if it's more than like a couple hours, it's too long.
01:34:11
Chris Prime
it's like It's like a week.
01:34:14
Zach Sheets
He's trapped the car for a week?
01:34:15
Chris Prime
Yeah.
01:34:16
Zach Sheets
Wow. Wow.
01:34:17
Chris Prime
Yeah, that's what I'm saying. like it's It's like so much... Yeah, like, maybe it's more than, maybe not a full week, but I think it's like three or four days he's in that car.
01:34:30
Chris Prime
And then, uh, it gets, like, very, like, preachy, and none of it, like, pays off.
01:34:42
Chris Prime
Uh, and the crazy thing is, I think Glock is a remake of a French movie.
01:34:46
Zach Sheets
I think he writes an Argentinian movie called Mm-hmm.
01:34:48
Chris Prime
Oh, okay.
01:34:51
Chris Prime
And it's just like a social com it's like a social commentary movie where it's like, hey, let's recap the last 10 years of sort of like crime and and community and like nature versus nurture discussion points.
01:35:09
Chris Prime
Which i think like this movie needs to get made once in a while for people who don't really know film to watch a movie like that and get very like, Oh, maybe I should be better person. But i don't know. It drags on so long.
01:35:28
Chris Prime
And then I'm just not a fan of like, I don't know, just sort of like movies where the point is don't get in the car.
01:35:40
Chris Prime
Like it's like,
01:35:42
Zach Sheets
Yeah, those don' trick don't try to steal cars.
01:35:44
Chris Prime
Don't try to steal cars. And it's, it's, that that's it. It's like, it's not like some sort of like a predestined thing. And it's like any kind of bigger thing. It it literally, this, this just like Anthony Hopkins was just like waiting for anyone to get in the car. So he could just be like, oh yeah, time for like a giant rant.
01:36:01
Chris Prime
So it's okay. Like, it's like nothing terrible, but it's like, if you had this and something else to watch, like, eh, watch something else.
01:36:10
Zach Sheets
Watch something else.
01:36:13
Chris Prime
Visually, it's okay, but like I don't need to in this movie again.
01:36:17
Zach Sheets
Yeah, normally normally like normally I'm a fan of like someone trapped in one location movies, like Buried or a phone booth or something like that. But...
01:36:29
Chris Prime
i mean, if you love Anthony Hopkins going crazy and just spewing random lines and cursing, or not cursing, he's very just like being very gentleman-like.
01:36:38
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
01:36:40
Chris Prime
It's fun, but he never gets over-the-top, like, cannibal-like or crazy, like, nothing quotable. I'm also, i could be misremembering things, because saw this movie on a plane.
01:36:52
Chris Prime
But being trapped in a plane watching Locked just was, like, a very, like, eh, it's this or a nap.
01:37:01
Chris Prime
So, i don't know, maybe I'll revisit this movie in a year. See how I still feel. What about you? What's your number fifth?
01:37:10
Zach Sheets
So, my fifth worst, or this i more disappointing than worst, but the Mission Impossible Final Reckoning. i mean, if this is how the Mission Impossible franchise ends, it's it's a pretty low disappointing end.
01:37:25
Zach Sheets
I mean, I think the the big thing is that it's way, way, way too long. I mean, it's like, almost it's like I think, over three close to three hours long, or almost three hours long. And it it doesn't... It's not... that much plot in it to justify the length because like it's there's a lot of like repetitive scenes of just people standing in a room and saying like look like you know looking at screens and like like it's just like we gotta do something it's like we let ethan do that do what you should do is he not do his job he'll'llll he'll he'll he'll figure it out
01:38:00
Zach Sheets
Or it's like the IMF team being like, Ethan, it's your destiny. You have to do you like you have to do this. you're there You're destined to do this. You're the only person that can do this.
01:38:08
Chris Prime
They keep like hyping him. and they Do they not give him backup? Is there no one else the IMF group?
01:38:17
Zach Sheets
i mean, he's got he's got his... like It's the team from Dead Reckoning.
01:38:21
Chris Prime
But like did IMF never have like another group?
01:38:25
Zach Sheets
i That agency like like like fluctuates so much of where it's like, I think it was like three, they had like a giant, like their whole like whole like agency that you went they went to. So like when they go like IMF headquarters, and like Lawrence Fishburne's there, just like showing everyone around.
01:38:41
Zach Sheets
But then it's just like cut to like other movies. It's like, oh, Ethan, you're you're the like the only agent we have. Plus like two other guys, maybe.
01:38:50
Chris Prime
But figure since all hands on deck, IMF, and then you know this like secret AI, that you figure that'd be like a very big priority for to them to send more than seven people.
01:39:02
Zach Sheets
Yeah, and that's like the other thing The Entity is such like a terrible villain where it's like an algorithm and there's not really a... You don't have any sort of like physical way of like showing the threat. It's just screens flickering. screens flicker it's just like screens showing things.
01:39:22
Zach Sheets
Because like the cause the big thing in The Final Reckoning is that the entity is taking is like taking down like nuclear launch sites and there's like kind of a countdown to if it takes over all of them it's gonna like basically cause like nuclear armageddon so like it's like it's like yeah the stakes are like and like insanely high it's like the most insanely high like consequences you could possibly have where it's like world ending like apocalypse
01:39:49
Zach Sheets
But then it's it's it's like a digital entity. you see it's It's not like you can punch it or like fight it or do anything. just like people just have to say how bad it is and without like giving you any sort of like evidence of how... yeah It's just like you know you're watching bars tick down or like percentages just go up.
01:40:07
Zach Sheets
Like, percentage hacked.
01:40:10
Chris Prime
Oh. Oh. You know, it it wasn't even, like, locking doors.
01:40:12
Zach Sheets
And then...
01:40:15
Zach Sheets
They kind of get away from... In Dead Reckoning, it was causing deepfakes and impersonating people's voices. They kind of get away from that in this one.
01:40:24
Chris Prime
What? I thought was gonna, like, up the ante for the final.
01:40:27
Zach Sheets
The main thing is hacking nuclear launch sites. nuclear power plant like nuclear like launch sites And then yeah yeah they tried to have like the you know a face for the entity with Asai Morales.
01:40:40
Zach Sheets
is like He's like the henchman for it.
01:40:43
Chris Prime
Uh-huh.
01:40:43
Zach Sheets
But he kind he like disappears for like most of this movie.
01:40:48
Zach Sheets
And then I think the the main thing, though, is like it's just like you don't get the you don't get like the big action that you expect, especially like from the recent ones where like you know Tom Cruise is doing some like crazy stunts.
01:41:01
Zach Sheets
you get like, you get like like a diving sequence where he goes and like to like the sunken Soviet sub that they have to get to. And that's kind of a cool sequence. Cause they, they built like this whole like set and yeah and it's like, I think it was like the biggest like water tank ever for a movie.
01:41:18
Zach Sheets
And then he's like doing like this, like underwater sequence. But like the only, the only big kind of like mission impossible style stunt sequence is like the biplane sequence that you saw place on the trailers inside the poster.
01:41:30
Zach Sheets
But that's like the last 20 minutes of like, at you know, almost three hour long movie. So you have to you wait like for the entire, like entire movie length to get to but this one sequence.
01:41:44
Zach Sheets
And it's cool. It's awesome. but i don't know if it's worth, you know, it's like we're seeing it through like kind of two hours of slow, kind of grim nonsense to get to it.
01:41:55
Zach Sheets
That's the other thing, too, is like it's so this movie is so grim and depressing, and it's just like there's none of the fun of like yeah of like there's another like the banter, like the heisty kind of like elements of Mission Impossible. It's just like everyone is like so depressed and grim, and and like the world is ending. like we have like like a couple like we have like a couple days where the entire world like blows up.
01:42:20
Chris Prime
I see. So it's not like the same kind of like, oh man, can't wait to, you know, this reminds me of another job kind of callback or they're saying, Ethan, you know, careful, you got to do this to save your wife or, you're you know, like they don't do that anymore.
01:42:38
Zach Sheets
No, and like yeah the other movies had like you know had that like heist movie element where they come up with a plan, but then it goes bad, and they to kind of improvise, and that's like part of the fun of all these movies. are they going to get out of this?
01:42:49
Zach Sheets
And then this is just like, Ethan, you're you're the you're the chosen one. You have to do this. like You have to stop the entity. like If you don't do it, everyone's going
01:43:00
Chris Prime
But does he do mini heist during it?
01:43:04
Zach Sheets
die. No, not really.
01:43:04
Chris Prime
Oh, damn.
01:43:06
Zach Sheets
It's like like he does like this the like the dive to like get to the sub. but and then And then it's like the most like ridiculous... like It's all like coincidences. of like if you get to this If you get to this spot at a certain time, I get to spot this spot at this certain time, then the plan will work.
01:43:25
Zach Sheets
So it's all hinges on coincidences and like like timing everything perfectly to like be at like certain spots. multiple places across the globe everyone gets to a certain spot and it's just like it kind of like like goes like beyond your like belief of like alright this is like these movies have been like crazy before but this is like beyond like i like it's hard to believe that this like is able to happen
01:43:58
Zach Sheets
that they can, like like, make this, like, work. And, like, all these, like, crazy coincidences.
01:44:01
Chris Prime
It's like too many just strung together.
01:44:08
Zach Sheets
it's like It's, like, too impossible. hey they they they like They've, like, pushed it past, like, the, like, impossible, like, a meter. Yeah.
01:44:16
Chris Prime
Oh, maybe that now we know what the limit is of too many like coincidences and half the samses in a movie where...
01:44:22
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
01:44:24
Chris Prime
There was no setup. It just sort of goes, oh, everything's sort of like magically unlocked. So Ethan could just walk through and then just get like words of encouragement to keep going.
01:44:34
Zach Sheets
yeah but
01:44:35
Chris Prime
Like, why is he doubting himself?
01:44:37
Zach Sheets
i mean maybe maybe because like uh know like rebecca first got killed in the previous one and then it's like also like he doesn't trust he's he spends like the he's the opening of this movie is like he's been''s been spending like a couple weeks just like in like a bunker, because like hiding away because he doesn't trust anyone to like have like the, the key that opens the, you know, the entity's source code.
01:45:02
Zach Sheets
so So he's just been like kind of locked like locked away in like a, like a, know, like a, a Unabomber style bunker. Just be like, I don't trust anybody. It's all on me.
01:45:13
Chris Prime
The special one. The Chosen.
01:45:16
Zach Sheets
But then the thing about it too is like, you i if if if you want to know if you want to like know how things wrap up, you got to watch it. You're just going to be like, I'm left on a heckle fanger of dead reckoning. So you you kind of have to watch it if you want to see how the Mission Impossible story ends.
01:45:31
Zach Sheets
But it's all but it's it's it's like not a fun end to watch. So I don't know. It was it was isless like hugely disappointing.
01:45:41
Zach Sheets
So, uh, but yeah, it's, it's, it's, it's kind it's kind of like your damn, your damn dope. Cause you like, either you're going to have like incomplete story or you gotta like slog through this, like final movie.
01:45:56
Zach Sheets
But yeah what whats what's your number four, Chris?
01:45:59
Chris Prime
So my number four is Until Dawn. The live action adaptation of the Until Dawn movie, which does not follow the video
01:46:03
Zach Sheets
Okay.
01:46:16
Chris Prime
i
01:46:18
Chris Prime
at all. don't like a horror movie that just establishes like rules and then goes, I forgot what my rules are. I still like don't understand what was the theme.
01:46:36
Chris Prime
Is a theme like letting go of things? Because like if it was about that, why even use the Until Dawn brand?
01:46:47
Zach Sheets
Yeah, cause it's because it's it's like a it's a time loop, which doesn't factor it into any of the other, like, it doesn't factor into the actual game at all that's not a time loop.
01:46:55
Chris Prime
It's not a time loop. Until Dawn it doesn't really make sense until you play the game to understand why they call it Until Dawn. They don't really have a time limit. i know They sort of do have a time limit of how long they could be in the time loop, but nothing sort of says like until dawn.
01:47:17
Chris Prime
Right?
01:47:19
Zach Sheets
They have to survive until dawn.
01:47:22
Chris Prime
Was that it?
01:47:22
Zach Sheets
They just yeah if have to survive the night and then make it to dawn and then they can get out.
01:47:27
Chris Prime
But I thought at the end it was like them trying to run out of the portal of the loop. Because they found like a... They went like a different path. Instead of like the normal path they've been doing of attempting to fight like the killer and then like all the... The the spirits of the town that they're in.
01:47:46
Chris Prime
They figured they could just run through like a tunnel and then make it out. And then that will break the cycle. Because the town itself is...
01:47:57
Chris Prime
keeping you there but you keep staying there too long you become corrupted
01:48:02
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
01:48:04
Chris Prime
but that's like different that's a whole new rule like that's something I'm like trying to figure out like that like like they establish but like it still doesn't make sense also like that explains the town I guess once you're in the time bubble But it didn't quite explain the supernatural forces that pushed them into the town.
01:48:27
Chris Prime
Because why would the town let them leave?
01:48:32
Chris Prime
Like when you just like push them back in or whatever it's like it's decided it's not like oh no these are these people were worthy.
01:48:40
Zach Sheets
Well, it's it's all an experiment.
01:48:43
Chris Prime
Was it?
01:48:44
Zach Sheets
from Yeah, because because it's Peter Stormer who like is like the like the like shows up from... he's He's in the game and then he's in the movie. He's like the only connection between the two of them.
01:48:54
Chris Prime
But his thing was he experimented on the town. And then because of that, like he introduced the fear thing or whatever. Like he he was trying to like figure out like fear and humans.
01:49:07
Chris Prime
And then for whatever reason that like sank the town.
01:49:08
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
01:49:10
Chris Prime
Like actually, no, I think the town sank on its own and he just happened to like hang out there. But even then, I can't remember. any like Like it's inconsequential.
01:49:20
Zach Sheets
Yeah, because he's like a psychologist. He's like and he's super interested in like, yeah, people's fears. like me Maybe lay people's fears and, you know, figure out how that all works. and And he's like doing all these experiments to like like learn about fear.
01:49:33
Chris Prime
But then, like, he didn't make the time loop.
01:49:37
Zach Sheets
No, and then also that doesn't affect anyone in the game.
01:49:40
Chris Prime
Yeah.
01:49:41
Zach Sheets
it's like...
01:49:42
Chris Prime
Like, what was going on? But, yeah. not It's enjoyable if you don't know anything about the game, but, like, even in... it's and But it has, like, a limit of, like, once you start figuring out, like, plot, you're like, wait, this doesn't make sense.
01:50:00
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I mean, just just just go watch... Kevin in the Woods. that's like It's not a time loop, but it has like it's kind of a similar like you know similar there's like a a bunch of different horror things coming to kill you.
01:50:15
Chris Prime
Yeah. Yeah, I would say it's like a weird version of Cabin in the Woods that they failed to understand. again But again, some parts I liked where like there's a montage of like things and different attempts and then kind of they're trying different methods in the house.
01:50:33
Zach Sheets
Yeah, there's fun stuff. like I love the loop where they lock themselves in the bathroom and then the water like explodes them.
01:50:41
Chris Prime
Mm-hmm. So like it's like dumb, but it doesn't get to, like, dumb enough to be, like, memorable and you want to watch it more. It's just like, oh, that was different.
01:50:54
Zach Sheets
Yeah, just just just play the game.
01:50:55
Chris Prime
Yeah, just play the games.
01:50:58
Zach Sheets
So my number four is The Running Man.
01:51:03
Zach Sheets
Which, you know, based more on the Stephen King novel than the Arnold movie. But it just it does it doesn't have any of the stuff that makes like the like the original 80s movie like fun. like It doesn't have over-the-top villains. It doesn't have kind of like the... the the kind like the more like the game show. It has the game show stuff, but like it's it's much more like a you know social commentary about today where it's like it's more it's more like a reality show.
01:51:35
Zach Sheets
and it's got you know It's like drones and you have to film like confessionals and send them to the the studio. but think The main thing that makes it like disappointing is that it's an Edgar Wright movie, but it feels like it could have been directed by any so like any kind of like workman like director for hire. It doesn't have any of his like style to it.
01:51:56
Zach Sheets
It just feels like just got like forced to do it or something and like kind of like just like didn't it put any effort into it.
01:52:06
Zach Sheets
so like like like Critical? Yeah, I think by i think it was by far his least critically acclaimed movie.
01:52:14
Zach Sheets
But you know he's got like he always does like the the the like the great editing with like quick cuts and like a lot of creative sequences or shots. like there was like that like like the Last Night in Soho, the opening like nightclub scene where they switching between characters.
01:52:31
Chris Prime
Mm-hmm.
01:52:33
Zach Sheets
But yeah, this this is just like generic action. It doesn't have any sort of like fun Edgar Wright kind of twist to anything.
01:52:42
Zach Sheets
And it's also, it's it feels long, like it just feels way too long.
01:52:47
Zach Sheets
It's, yeah, it's just like it's just like a super generic kind of like like action movie that, like, just you you're better off just watching the the original. Like, this is this can't, like, doesn't really, like, it's not like a, like,
01:53:04
Zach Sheets
doesn't surpass like the art like the art y'all movie even though it's even though it's trying and it's like know it's different because it's the stephen king novel so it's like has like a different kind of premise where you can like go anywhere and then there's like hunters like chasing you you're not like you find like an an arena but they don't don't even mean like really do anything fun with that premise so like you can be like go anywhere and hide And like, Mipao doesn't even like really hide that much anyway. Like he's like checks in the hotel and is like, I'm just gonna stay at this hotel.
01:53:34
Zach Sheets
oh they found me somehow. All right.
01:53:37
Zach Sheets
And then like the, the hunters are all like, they have like no personality. There's like, it's not like a bunch like, you know, like crazy over the top, like colorful characters. It's just like, it's just like generic guys and like ski masks.
01:53:49
Zach Sheets
They like hunt you down.
01:53:50
Chris Prime
Oh really? I thought like maybe there's the main hunter and then there's like hench hunter.
01:53:56
Zach Sheets
I mean, there's one main hunter, but he just yeah he's he has like a balcava on. like He looks like a ghost from of Duty or something.
01:54:07
Zach Sheets
And then the rest the guys, there's there's kind of like an idea they use disguises to like disguise themselves and like they can appear anywhere. But it's kind like it's like it's really half-assed. like They don't really do that that much. It's kind of like showing montage.
01:54:23
Zach Sheets
But when they're hunting Glenn Powell, they don't really do that.
01:54:26
Zach Sheets
And yeah, it's it's just like, it's like Lee Pace is like the actually like is like the main guy. And then it's just like a bunch like random, like, like just random dudes with him.
01:54:36
Zach Sheets
So, I mean, yeah, everything everything is, that was was like more fun and better in the Arnold movie.
01:54:43
Zach Sheets
i was I would say maybe if it's not like Paramount Plus or something at some point, it was just looking for something like dumb to stream on like a weekend or something that we're watching. But it was like going into it as like an Edgar Wright movie. It was like super disappointing.
01:55:01
Zach Sheets
So I think what's your number three, Chris?
01:55:04
Chris Prime
My number three is Megan 2.0.
01:55:08
Chris Prime
Don't really enjoy the fact that they decided to... wait Sorry, did you hear me? It was Megan 2.0.
01:55:15
Zach Sheets
Yeah, you it's it sounds like youre you're across the room for a a second there, but no now you're better.
01:55:17
Chris Prime
Damn. I mean, all I did was like lean back. My mic is weird. I'd be like kissing it and you could hear me, or I need to be like... like If I turn away, it just picks up nothing.
01:55:29
Zach Sheets
it like you're like a wandering around like somewhere, else like talking still.
01:55:32
Chris Prime
Nope, nope. So, Megan 2.0 is a very disappointing follow-up, where they did they jumped the shark on having Megan be an anti-hero, and it almost was like...
01:55:44
Zach Sheets
anti-hero
01:55:50
Chris Prime
it This should have been like the third movie. You know? Like, a... you know
01:55:57
Zach Sheets
like like i have like one more where she's like the villain and then this is like then then then it becomes like she they reprogram become she becomes a hero yeah
01:56:04
Chris Prime
I mean, they don't really reprogram her. They just barter with her. And then Megan's just like, okay, well, it's this or, like, back in, the like, the toy, so, okay. And then they just let her have, like, all the weapons.
01:56:18
Zach Sheets
yeah the vi
01:56:18
Chris Prime
They basically made her battle Angel Alita.
01:56:21
Zach Sheets
yeah basically to fight like another battle angel alina
01:56:25
Chris Prime
Yeah. And... I mean, like I watched that in a blur because I was like cramming this. Is it like the other robot went rogue and then they're like, all right, Megan, like we just need you to come out of retirement.
01:56:41
Zach Sheets
well someone stole designs from megan uh and then like and it's like the pentagon or something they they used the plans for Megan to make Amelia, who's like the evil new evil robot.
01:56:54
Zach Sheets
And they're theyre using her as like a weapons, like a black ops, like assassin drone. But then she goes rogue and she's killing everyone like associated with like the project.
01:57:04
Zach Sheets
And then then she's coming after like Gemma because you yeah obviously Gemma designed Megan. So they like she's trying to kill everyone to stop her from like who could like stop her.
01:57:17
Zach Sheets
like who like knows how she works, and then i guess just like kill up sort justs like kill random people or like whatever she's trying to do.
01:57:25
Chris Prime
Yeah, see, like, it just becomes very weak where it's just like, okay, well, I wish there was, like, a whole thing where the robot was picking off, like, a hit list or or killing rival competitors or even, like, fulfilling Megan's wish. But then Megan's like, oh, no, how dare you?
01:57:45
Chris Prime
Like, that's, I only get to do that.
01:57:51
Chris Prime
But yeah, I just feel like at this point they made it for like memes and trying to be like try hard for the internet culture and it comes off very disingenuine.
01:58:05
Zach Sheets
Yeah, because the because the first one was like sort of...
01:58:09
Zach Sheets
I mean, they're intentionally trying to do it, but like it it wasn't like as forced as this one of like kind of like the weirder moments. like This one, they're like like they're trying manufacture like weird moments.
01:58:19
Chris Prime
Yeah, i think that's what like I felt. like Everything think felt like a parent joke.
01:58:24
Zach Sheets
Or it's just like a rehash. like because like There's like the first like the scene in the first movie where Megan sings Sia Katie, and then they tried they basically do the same scene in this movie. where she do that shes she She sings a Kate Bush song to Gemma.
01:58:39
Chris Prime
Mm-hmm.
01:58:40
Zach Sheets
it's like, it's the same scene. we but they're like but they're all But they're like commenting on it instead of just like letting it be weird. Like at the first one, it's like, they're actually like, what are you doing?
01:58:51
Zach Sheets
This is weird.
01:58:54
Zach Sheets
Yeah, they're they're they're they're trying to do like a like a Terminator 2 thing.
01:58:58
Chris Prime
Yeah, and instead of, like, kind of having it where Megan should also get loose and try to kill, like, the family, and then she has to change her heart, or maybe she realizes it's better to kill the other ai
01:59:11
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
01:59:18
Chris Prime
You know, like, something where it's like, okay, like, I don't like you, you don't like me, but, like, we... This is the one common area we have to like team up or whatever.
01:59:30
Chris Prime
But it's at the gate, just like, hey, Megan, you want to help us? Okay, I guess.
01:59:37
Chris Prime
Right? There's no scene where Megan tries to like test her boundaries and like murder someone else first.
01:59:43
Zach Sheets
Yeah, i feel I feel like the kind just like the Terminator 2 thing of this like, hey, don't kill anybody. She's like, all right, fine.
01:59:51
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's so fast.
01:59:54
Chris Prime
like Unless they had that robot that boxed her in the first movie back as like a backup.
02:00:02
Zach Sheets
like, yeah, like don't cross this or we'll unleash, like, we'll crush you with that construction bot again.
02:00:07
Chris Prime
Yeah, right? Wouldn't that make sense? like To have that kind of looming around?
02:00:12
Zach Sheets
yeah And then then they get the whole thing like like there's like those neural implants that like let Megan control Gemma's body and stuff like that. It's like, oh, what what's going on?
02:00:22
Zach Sheets
This is too much.
02:00:23
Chris Prime
It's like too much. That's like what happens. it's I think are so far a list of movies is like they're trying too much for a premise and now you've bloated it to the point where it just feels like a slog to go through.
02:00:39
Chris Prime
but Yeah, what's your number three?
02:00:42
Zach Sheets
so Speaking of AI, my number three is Tron Ares, which was a you know a huge disappointment, especially if you're a Tron fan. i mean, don the the big thing that is like great about it is the Nine Inch Nails score.
02:00:58
Zach Sheets
That's awesome. that Not now as good as the Daft Punk score, which is like one of the all-time greatest movie scores of all time. But still still a pretty awesome score. but yeah, everything else about it is just like...
02:01:10
Zach Sheets
like did they They don't continue any of the plot lines that they kind of set up in Tron Legacy. It's like they're doing their own new thing and it's it's it's like...
02:01:23
Zach Sheets
it's Yeah, it's it's like not interesting at all. Like, we're going to bring Tron stuff into the real world. We're going to bring programs in and make them super soldiers.
02:01:35
Chris Prime
I hope they don't have any feelings.
02:01:39
Zach Sheets
And there's like a and a terrible MacGuffin where it's it's like the permanence code. where Because like anything you bring in from the grid only lasts for 30 minutes. But then if you get the permanence code, it lasts forever. So that's why everyone's trying to get the permanence code.
02:01:56
Zach Sheets
But Kevin Flynn had it on his old computer. So you gotta find that and get it.
02:02:02
Zach Sheets
And then Jared Leto is like this, know, he's like Ares, like a super soldier, or like a security program that's designed to be a soldier. And then it's all, you know, it's him trying like learning about the real world, but it's Jared Leto.
02:02:16
Zach Sheets
So he's terrible.
02:02:18
Chris Prime
Yeah, I think no one cared for Jared Little to like exp like explain the wonder of life to AI. i think that was like just like so stiff.
02:02:28
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
02:02:30
Chris Prime
And it's not like he he like meets a child or anything that teaches him like the childlike wonder of life
02:02:38
Zach Sheets
no he's's's he's like running around with greta lee who's like the ceo of n-com and then there's like and then evan peters is like this like the ceo of dillinger program so it's like dillinger family split off and made their own company like an evil company
02:02:53
Zach Sheets
and and then he's like he's like such it's such a like a cliche like evil like tech billionaire like tech bro like i'm don't care what the concepts are i'm just gonna unleash this technology in the world
02:03:06
Zach Sheets
And in then, like, the... yeah Like, and on the face of it, like the like, you know, having, like, light cycles and stuff in the real world kind of seems like a cool idea. But then the way they, like, visualize it, I didn't think it was... those kind of looks stupid. like kind of just, like, looks like... Oh, there's, like, light trails on, like, a freeway. That looks awkward.
02:03:27
Zach Sheets
there's, like, people in, like, these Tron suits running around and, like, fighting on the streets, the real streets.
02:03:34
Chris Prime
they fighting the military?
02:03:36
Zach Sheets
Kinda, yeah. They like blow some jet stuff. But the whole the whole thing about Tron is that we want to be in the grid. We want to be in like the Tron world. We don't want to be in the we don't be in our stupid world. and the ratio of the like You're world like, don't know, 20 minutes, 30 minutes of this like two hour long movie or two two over two hour long movie. but The ratio is like totally just like like jacked up of like being in being in the grid compared to like the real world.
02:04:05
Zach Sheets
Because the grid has all the cool neon and like you know all the all the official effects you want to see from Tron. And then you just bring just bring him into like our world. It's like kind of like a guy in like a weird suit running around.
02:04:19
Zach Sheets
Or like a cool motorcycle. But like... that that's That's it.
02:04:26
Zach Sheets
So, yeah, I mean, i would just stick to Tron Legacy or that as with the original one. Like, this like if you're if you're a giant, giant Tron fan yeah and you guys watch other everything Tron, I guess, see it.
02:04:39
Zach Sheets
But this is yeah this is not like this is not like a great entry and in the Tron franchise.
02:04:45
Chris Prime
I really have to get ready to watch this movie. As a big Tron fan, I can't believe like what a like misstep this is.
02:04:54
Zach Sheets
Just just listen listen to the Nine Nails soundtrack. That's the best part of this movie.
02:04:58
Chris Prime
Again, I'm going to see this movie like on Disney Plus. I'm not paying for anything. Like anything more.
02:05:07
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Yeah, I went to the theater to see it So
02:05:13
Zach Sheets
so what's what's your number two, Chris?
02:05:16
Chris Prime
Uh, so my number two is I Know What You Did Last Summer.
02:05:22
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
02:05:23
Chris Prime
So you want to talk about, like, this is this franchise is Han Ares, where they just, like, ran out of ideas and then just went, okay, what if we just did this?
02:05:35
Chris Prime
Doesn't really make any sense. Let's just make this twist killer.
02:05:39
Zach Sheets
I find it really funny that, you know, I What You Did Last Summer kind of like copied the original screen when it came out. And now that like so the screen movies have come back with like, you know, the latest entries, now it's back again.
02:05:50
Zach Sheets
i Know What You Did Last Summer. They're also kind of just like trying to copy them with like a legacy sequel.
02:05:55
Chris Prime
But, but, the, having, i mean, do want, I just want to spoil it, like, having Freddy Prince Jr. be the the crazy, like, I need to show people that this was real, kind of, crazy mind thing, it that should have been, like, the sequel.
02:06:09
Zach Sheets
Yeah, yeah.
02:06:13
Chris Prime
Not, like, this long, and then,
02:06:18
Zach Sheets
Why did he wait this long to like enact this like, a plant like a revenge plot?
02:06:19
Chris Prime
Yeah.
02:06:23
Chris Prime
Was it really a revenge plot? and just It just had nothing to do.
02:06:28
Zach Sheets
yeah
02:06:28
Chris Prime
i mean, I guess, like, he just couldn't handle, like, adult life. Because it happened. His, like, i get it. I think in the first movie, he's supposed to be, like, not going to college.
02:06:43
Zach Sheets
Yeah, he was was he was going... Well, they were all going to do something, and then, like, this like the accident, like...
02:06:51
Chris Prime
No, i don't think I don't think he had a plan. He didn't have like a post high school plan.
02:06:55
Zach Sheets
Oh, yeah. Yeah, everyone's going to leave, and he's like, well, I'm stuck here. This is my last summer of, like, freedom.
02:07:01
Chris Prime
Yeah, because it was like. And then it's just straight working.
02:07:09
Zach Sheets
Well, I thought, like, from, like, some of the trailer and stuff, I thought they were going to, like, do some sort of crazy reveal where, like, Sarah Michelle Gellar didn't die and she was going to be the killer.
02:07:18
Chris Prime
Yeah, well, that was just a dream fantasy just to...
02:07:21
Zach Sheets
yeah. Like, a bizarre dream that, like, why would that character even dream about her?
02:07:24
Chris Prime
Yeah, like, did he... Did she know her?
02:07:28
Zach Sheets
Just basically, like, looking at a a photo, it's like, you know, like, her personality. Yeah.
02:07:33
Zach Sheets
And then the whole thing with the true crime podcaster was so cringe and terrible.
02:07:40
Chris Prime
But yeah, yeah, just I hated it.
02:07:41
Zach Sheets
Yeah, like
02:07:42
Chris Prime
I hate what like the franchise turned into.
02:07:45
Zach Sheets
yeah because because the read those the recent Scream movies have been fun. They at least like have like done some new stuff continue to do some like fresh things. And this is just lame rehash. lame rehash
02:07:59
Zach Sheets
With, like I said, like a terrible twist of like, oh, Frypins Jr. is the killer.
02:08:06
Zach Sheets
And then, like also, like, an extremely lame excuse to try to be careful of Hewitt in. It's like, you know about this stuff, right? Come help us. Oh, and also, like, the the sequel setup where, like, where fucking Brandy comes back.
02:08:24
Chris Prime
it's like Do you remember me? Like, what?
02:08:28
Zach Sheets
Because there's someone else out there that wants to kill them?
02:08:31
Chris Prime
Committing things? Yeah, I guess.
02:08:34
Zach Sheets
who who Who's left?
02:08:38
Zach Sheets
There's no one from the first movie left.
02:08:41
Chris Prime
Was Jack Black in...
02:08:43
Zach Sheets
No. No. or are yeah you might Like, like i still know you did?
02:08:50
Chris Prime
Yeah, I think he was and I still know he did last summer.
02:08:53
Zach Sheets
No. Oh, yeah, he was uncredited. He was resort pot-headed pool boy.
02:08:56
Chris Prime
Yeah.
02:08:59
Chris Prime
There you go.
02:08:59
Zach Sheets
That's his type.
02:09:01
Chris Prime
think we found the next killer.
02:09:05
Chris Prime
You were so easy say no. It's like, no, no, no. I remember he was in it and it's just like so weird.
02:09:11
Zach Sheets
The weird era of Jack Black where he would show up. he All these forgotten movies he was in, like The Jackal.
02:09:18
Chris Prime
Like he's too old.
02:09:19
Zach Sheets
Oh, yeah. Yeah.
02:09:19
Chris Prime
He was too old to play like anyone in his like teens and 20s like he was. So he had to either be but the like questionally aged slacker person in movies until he had like the like lead role in something.
02:09:36
Chris Prime
But now you'd be the lead killer.
02:09:38
Zach Sheets
Yeah. That'd be an interesting turn if Jack Black was a horror villain. that in an envelope and mail it yourself, Chris, so you get the copyright.
02:09:49
Chris Prime
Yeah.
02:09:51
Zach Sheets
No, trademark, no it can take this. I wrote it in an envelope.
02:09:56
Zach Sheets
So my number two is Wolfman. the latest Universal Monster reboot, which a huge huge step down from Invisible Man, which was also directed by Lee Wennell. So it was as like like interesting and like fresh as that was, this is was just like terrible and
02:10:19
Zach Sheets
not a lot of great like new ideas. It's just kind of like, it was like, oh, what if, where, what if we like made it like a disease? Like you get, you contract like a, like this, like disease and that's like but the werewolf, like, like lichenism.
02:10:32
Chris Prime
like lupus disease.
02:10:34
Zach Sheets
Yeah. And you kind of slowly, you like have like the character turn into like a werewolf.
02:10:41
Zach Sheets
but yeah, it's like, it's so dark, but not like, you know like not tonally, like visually, like you can barely tell what the hell's happening to the entire movie. It's so fucking dark.
02:10:53
Zach Sheets
And yeah, now not a lot happens. It's just like they're kind of like hanging out in this house and then but Christopher Abbott just say i slowly turns into a werewolf. it' It's not even a wear never you like a werewolf because once he turns, you can't turn it back and forth. he's just like You're like transforming and you're mutating into like a a monster because of this like infection.
02:11:14
Zach Sheets
And then they try to do... You know how like Invisible Man kind had a social commentary? It's actually about like abusive relationships.
02:11:21
Zach Sheets
like if Invisible a Man was about like gaslighting and abusive relationships.
02:11:22
Chris Prime
yeah Oh, yeah, yeah.
02:11:24
Zach Sheets
but this is They're trying to do kind of like a... like bad fathers. like like like like because like Christopher Rabbit's father was like like like like you know a terrible dad.
02:11:37
Zach Sheets
and then He started like break the cycle, but then now he's turning into like a monster that would like kill his family.
02:11:43
Chris Prime
Mm-hmm. I see.
02:11:45
Zach Sheets
but they they like to it's not It's nowhere near as like clever or like well integrated as the Invisible Man stuff.
02:11:51
Chris Prime
I'm thinking like didn't they do that the other like Del Toro? No, Benicio Del Toro's Wolfman where was like bad father.
02:12:01
Zach Sheets
Anthony Hopkins was like, yeah, he was also a werewolf.
02:12:05
Zach Sheets
I think the the the one kind of interesting thing in Wolfman is that... you you you get like some scenes where you you go into like Christopher Abbott's like hat like you kind of like go into like his perspective and then he his like senses are changing so he's he's like silly like not understanding what people are saying because he doesn't understand like human speech anymore because he's sort of it like this monster but then like his like it's like visions heightening and like his hearing tightening but like he is like losing his humanity because he doesn't understand what people are saying it's just kind of like this like mumbled kind of like he like barely hears what they're saying
02:12:42
Zach Sheets
So it's kind of like a slightly interesting way of like visualizing what's happening to him. Not like a disinfection, but like it's like the only kind of like really like interesting idea.
02:12:48
Chris Prime
Gotcha.
02:12:53
Zach Sheets
Yeah, it's it's it's just like it's just like a terrible, like not interesting horror a movie.
02:13:01
Zach Sheets
like just like Go watch Frankenstein if you want like a like a you a good like take on a Universal monster.
02:13:10
Zach Sheets
And then, what's your what's your number one, Chris? Number one worst movie of the year?
02:13:14
Chris Prime
I'm gonna say Electric State.
02:13:16
Zach Sheets
That's mine, too. We matched our best and worst.
02:13:19
Chris Prime
Yeah, so Electric State definitely is deserving of the hate. You were one of the first like persons I know that like watched and was just like, what a letdown.
02:13:30
Chris Prime
It was like a Futurama sketch that kept on going.
02:13:30
Zach Sheets
What
02:13:34
Zach Sheets
a... What a colossal waste of money. Like, they spent, like... $400 million dollars of this thing close to that.
02:13:41
Chris Prime
That's way too much for what they need.
02:13:43
Zach Sheets
And it's just like, yeah, where, where did it go? Why would you like, it feels like a money laundering scheme or something.
02:13:50
Chris Prime
you know In a movie that, like, with that much money behind it, they could have hired way more human extras to kind of flush it out, but they filled it out with just, like, more CG. that
02:14:03
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
02:14:03
Chris Prime
Like, after the fifth weird robot design, it just sort of blurs together.
02:14:10
Chris Prime
I get like they want to venture into the electric state area to, you know, go into the wild land and whatnot. Right. But you're trying to set up this world that I know is rich with lore and backstory, but we're following like just a group of people. We just don't care.
02:14:31
Zach Sheets
Yeah, like Chris Pratt is just doing like a like warmed over Star-Lord. Like he's just doing his like his usual stick. And Billy Bobby Brown is like not interesting at all.
02:14:42
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
02:14:42
Chris Prime
She's just like along for the ride. And then, you know, I feel like if you've seen a lot of like movies, you can see where it's going. The plot.
02:14:55
Chris Prime
it It feels like it wants to be Fallout in a way.
02:14:59
Zach Sheets
but Yeah, kinda.
02:15:00
Chris Prime
Just like wandering wasteland, having optimism. Don't be racist towards robots. But I just was like bored.
02:15:13
Zach Sheets
And then lot of the robots are like super goofy, and it's like, how do they almost win this war against humanity if they're like all these like goofy... like There's like a magician robot and like a a baseball robot, and then their leader's fucking Mr. Peanut.
02:15:27
Chris Prime
Yeah, I mean, like, this is post-war, so they're just, like, back to the fun self, but do you think there was, like, a kill mode that they were on? Like, a war mode?
02:15:38
Zach Sheets
I don't think so. I think they just like, like, like we're tired. We don't we like, we're tired of being like,
02:15:45
Chris Prime
Servants?
02:15:46
Zach Sheets
servants it's it's like which i mean this is a it's a way more interesting take on the story of i would go watch this instead of that but like you knowre like the anim andnna matrix like the uh the two-parter that like details the whole history of like the war like that is such an interesting great like like way to like tell this kind of story and this is just like oh yeah the robots like fought like fought humanity and then like mr peanut led the robot resistance and they lost
02:15:56
Chris Prime
Yeah.
02:16:10
Chris Prime
That'd be so, so embarrassing. I think the humans are more mad that they almost got defeated by a Mr. Peanut, like, robot.
02:16:17
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
02:16:19
Zach Sheets
But there's also like a thing of like there's VR too. It's it's like a Ready Player One kind of VR thing going on. that like they don't really It's like just like there. and it's also like But that's like you already have robots and it's a VR thing going on. can go drones and... Sammy Tucci's whole plot that he's trying to do.
02:16:41
Zach Sheets
Which also, like, St. Tucci feels like, I don't know if you got this, say like, he kind of feels like he's just, like, sleepwalking through this little thing.
02:16:47
Chris Prime
Oh, he's been in a Transformers movie.
02:16:47
Zach Sheets
Or just, like...
02:16:49
Chris Prime
He e knows how to like read this.
02:16:52
Zach Sheets
Yeah, he's, I feel like he's just, he's like, going through the motions.
02:16:56
Chris Prime
And like he's not the selling point. you know he was He's not on the... He's not what like a lot of young fans came to watch.
02:17:06
Chris Prime
But... Yeah, I just was not...
02:17:07
Zach Sheets
But just like... like
02:17:08
Chris Prime
like I was on my phone like most of the time.
02:17:11
Zach Sheets
Yeah. But just like, I mean, just the like the the cast they got, like live action and the voice cast, it's just like they got so many you like talented people and... But it's just like the money they spent and like it's from the Russo brothers who brought us Endgame, but then like everything since Endgame has been like pretty like generic and terrible or like... I mean, the Greyman was kind It was okay,
02:17:37
Zach Sheets
But I mean, like I guess we'll see, you like, next year with if they can, like, capture the magic game with Doomsday. but
02:17:43
Chris Prime
I'm hoping.
02:17:45
Zach Sheets
Or I guess maybe need, like, you know, like, they need, like, a Ken Feige, like, kind of rein them in a little bit. Because, like, I feel like this is definitely just, like, Netflix was like, do whatever you want. Here's, like, all the money.
02:17:56
Zach Sheets
Like, we had no restrictions. And it's just, like... It's like all their like worst impulses were like one was checking them.
02:18:05
Chris Prime
Yeah, I feel like they could have... Some some like visionary, another like overarching story editor could have stepped in and been, all right, don't do that.
02:18:19
Zach Sheets
and have i i also like a bunch of people but like I haven't read the book or I flipped through the book, but like the book I know like people said like the book has like a very, like kind of like it's a much more dour and serious, kind of like it's like you see like the like the like crippled corpses of robots and on this journey and stuff.
02:18:37
Zach Sheets
And then the movie
02:18:39
Zach Sheets
like lame Marvel like quipping and like all this like wacky shit going on.
02:18:44
Chris Prime
I think there's a tabletop game.
02:18:47
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
02:18:48
Chris Prime
So it's like there's a lot of lore with like a post-apocalyptic robotic post-apocalyptic future. It's just like it's just not conveyed well because they went like you don't get to spend a lot of time in the world of the human side and the robot side. it's more like this one group of humans care about the robots and that's it.
02:19:12
Chris Prime
Again, it's difficult. as Again, I wish it was better. it looked i you know From the onset, you want it to be better, but yeah, it's just sort of like it peaks really early, and then you're just writing out that same that same plot beat for like an hour, hour and a half.
02:19:33
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Oh, it also is is little shares like that, the Marvel problem that a lot of the Marvel movies have where it's like, there's no stakes as people just like come back. There's no death.
02:19:42
Chris Prime
Oh, yeah. Any character that's, like, kind of dramatic, it's like, I'll be back. Especially if it's, you know, definitely for the robots.
02:19:48
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Which also too, it's like, is a robot's death really that like, cause not like dying. You can just repair them, right? You can just like fix, like, like rewire them like fix the wiring and put them back.
02:19:59
Chris Prime
As long as you don't, yeah, as long as you don't blow the, uh, the, yeah, the memory, like, card.
02:19:59
Zach Sheets
It's not like they're like, CPU or... Yeah.
02:20:06
Zach Sheets
because Yeah, because it's like, oh no, all these robots are getting killed. It's like, are they getting killed? like Couldn't you just like... Yeah, just like, solder the wires back together and they're good.
02:20:17
Zach Sheets
but yeah, there's like a bunch of... there's like At least two scenes where it's like... Oh, this would be like a this is like a dramatic this could be like a dramatic you know like emotional scene, but then they just like undercut it like immediately because like they like get rid of like the stakes of it.
02:20:32
Zach Sheets
It's like, oh man! like it's like like This character's dead. Oh, nope. no They're good. They're good they're but they're back. Don't worry about it.
02:20:42
Chris Prime
They were fixed.
02:20:44
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
02:20:47
Zach Sheets
So do you have any dishonorable mentions, Chris?
02:20:51
Chris Prime
Uh... Not really. and like, didn't watch a lot of terrible movies initially. I think I need more, like, reflecting of this year to kind of get, like, more of a ranking, but nothing that was, like, super terrible that I was mad at.
02:21:08
Zach Sheets
So i just I just have a couple i have a couple quick. I put back in action, even though I think you were like, it's like it's fine.
02:21:14
Chris Prime
It can get worse.
02:21:15
Zach Sheets
But...
02:21:15
Chris Prime
It can get worse.
02:21:17
Zach Sheets
it could get worse. I just feel like it was super generic, and also, like, this this is what brought, brought like... why Why am I blanking?
02:21:27
Chris Prime
Cameron Diaz out of retirement.
02:21:29
Zach Sheets
cared Yeah, like, she she hasn't worked in, like... I think a decade or so. And like this this draws her back. This like generic Netflix algorithm like action movie that they've made like five times already.
02:21:44
Zach Sheets
because it's yeah it's like i think well not just Netflix, but Netflix, Amazon, all all these streamers like got a note where it's like, we need to make movies where there's a spy who leaves the espionage but and then becomes like a normal normal mom or dad, but they have to come back into like the spy universe.
02:22:06
Zach Sheets
And they're they're all, they're all like basically the same.
02:22:11
Zach Sheets
and i also I put, I know that summer as additional mention. Yeah. Just like, like we said, like, just like a, a lame rehash of the first movie. Yeah. I book Havoc, which is like more disappointing than bad, but like just coming... It's been such a build-up of like a new like Gareth Evans movie, and it was like... It took so long to get to what we actually wanted to to see from like a movie that he made.
02:22:40
Zach Sheets
like you know, The Raid, Raid 2, and then like Havoc is like... There's so much like non-action build-up stuff that's not interesting for like the first hour.
02:22:50
Zach Sheets
And then it also has like bizarre PS2-style graphics. And it seems like it's trying to like like be like Sin City.
02:23:01
Zach Sheets
Eventually it gets a decent, the finale is kind of decent action-wise, but it takes way too long to get what we wanted to see from Gareth Evans movie.
02:23:12
Zach Sheets
And then last one is Flight Risk. Just a super generic, kind of like like not interesting movie with like a bizarre Mark Wahlberg villain performance in it.
02:23:26
Zach Sheets
I would say if you're morbidly curious, I would say that's the only reason to watch it is like Mark Wahlberg's like insanity.
02:23:34
Zach Sheets
yeah He's got a southern accent. He's got like like a bald cap on. it's it It is truly bizarre.
02:23:39
Chris Prime
Wait, is it is he actually bald? Or did he shave his hair to match like a like a target or something?
02:23:42
Zach Sheets
Yes.
02:23:49
Zach Sheets
Nope, nope. He does, like, he kills the pilot that's supposed to be flying a plane. The pilot's not bald, doesn't look anything like Mark Wahlberg. He's just, yeah, Mark Wahlberg is like a bizarre, sadistic, bald assassin guy.
02:24:04
Chris Prime
Interesting choice.
02:24:06
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
02:24:08
Chris Prime
Again, nothing for being bald is, like, a problem, you know? It's just something happens, but...
02:24:14
Zach Sheets
it's well's It's like the way they treat it as big reveal of like, because they they pull off his like hat in a dramatic fashion. It's like, holy crap, Mark Wahlberg's bald!
02:24:26
Zach Sheets
and That was like in the trailer, was like it was like the bigger reveal like, oh shit, Mark Wahlberg's bald?
02:24:33
Zach Sheets
it's like It's like the biggest like plot plot twist.
02:24:39
Zach Sheets
But yeah, it's it's a pretty it's pretty like generic thriller, though. like it's like you like You'll you'll like see the beats coming from a mile away.
02:24:47
Zach Sheets
But yeah, so I think that'll wrap it up. This was an extremely long episode, but we're you know we're we're taking next week off. And this is the last podcast of 25, so yeah we'll you know wrap things up with like a big year-ender.
02:25:02
Zach Sheets
And yeah, looking forward to 2026. twenty twenty six hopefully Hopefully we'll get some some great movies next year. there're There's some pretty like potentially huge ones. so Avengers Doomsday. like Spider-Man Brand New Day is supposed to be next year. The Odyssey. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey.
02:25:20
Zach Sheets
Steven Spielberg's like Disclosure Day. We're getting a new Spielberg and a new Christopher Nolan movie next year.
02:25:27
Zach Sheets
Supergirl.
02:25:29
Zach Sheets
but Bunch of stuff. Hopefully, and hopeful okay like we get like it's a great film film year next year.
02:25:35
Chris Prime
In 2026, the year of the, like, I don't know, not retired spy movie genre. Or back.
02:25:42
Zach Sheets
Yeah, we'll get we'll get like three more of those.
02:25:44
Chris Prime
Yeah.
