This week on the Everything Actioncast, Zach and Chris perform an incantation and discuss the cult classic Warlock, which is celebrating the 35th anniversary of its domestic theatrical release this weekend.

Basically a horror/supernatural The Terminator, the late Julian Sands stars as The Warlock, who escapes imprisonment in 1691 Boston and ends up in 1991 Los Angeles.  Tasked by Satan himself to find the scattered parts of The Grand Grimoire, The Warlock seeks to undo creation.  Following The Warlock to the future is witch-hunter Giles Redferne (Richard E. Grant), who teams up with waitress Kassandra (Lori Singer) to stop The Warlock.  Zach and Chris discuss how little culture shock both Redferne and The Warlock have in the future, using young boy fat to fly, a weathervane being the most effective weapon against The Warlock, the terrible special effects, and more.

You can watch Warlock on Prime Video and Tubi.  Next week, we're getting caught in a time loop and discussing Edge of Tomorrow because an anime adaptation of All You Need is Kill is hitting theaters.

Introduction and Film Background

00:00:19
Zach Sheets
Hello and welcome to the Everything Action Cast, the podcast week of January 5th, 2026. I'm Zach.
00:00:26
Chris Prime
I'm your co-host, Chris.
00:00:28
Zach Sheets
And we are kicking off a new year by doing some incantations and talking about Warlock, the 1991 cult classic. It actually came out in 1989 in pretty much every other country or like internationally, but it finally hit the U.S. in January 11, 1991.
00:00:44
Zach Sheets
And yeah, I think definitely like like a cult

Cult Classic Status of 'Warlock'

00:00:47
Zach Sheets
classic. I think, you horror fans know the the series.
00:00:53
Chris Prime
Well... I would say like sci-fi channel fans would know the series because this would just play on like sci-fi and USA like random days. And I'm more familiar from that era because This is a movie you definitely see in a rental store back then.
00:01:13
Chris Prime
And you look at the cover and you're like, oh, okay, that's cool, I guess. And then, like, keep going. Because it doesn't really draw you in of, like, come see this awesome creature feature or, like, magic movie.
00:01:24
Zach Sheets
The first poster is not good. the group The poster for the first movie is pretty bad.
00:01:29
Chris Prime
Oh, it's a ripoff of, like, the Gremlins poster.
00:01:33
Zach Sheets
It's just, yeah, I'm looking at the one, like, it's like Julian Sands, just like, and he has a shadow of, like, a demon coming behind him, and, like, a white background.
00:01:40
Chris Prime
Yeah, if you look at the Gremlins poster, it's like the same...
00:01:44
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:01:44
Chris Prime
oh
00:01:44
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:01:45
Chris Prime
like i think Gremlins 1 or 2... Yeah, well, it's like the same color. Like, the Gremlins one where it's like, you see Fidget, and then like you see the shadow of Spike.
00:01:55
Zach Sheets
Yep. Yep.
00:01:58
Chris Prime
Maybe that's like the fourth like Gremlins poster, but... Either way, like...
00:02:03
Zach Sheets
So why is he?
00:02:03
Chris Prime
You don't even see that demon in the...
00:02:06
Zach Sheets
No.
00:02:07
Chris Prime
It's not like Julian Sands becomes like a winged Hell Knight or something.
00:02:13
Zach Sheets
It's like, why is, why is he barefoot? Like,
00:02:17
Chris Prime
yeah that looks like that's like That's like a poster you see at a like renaissance fair for like a magic act. like A very like subpar magic act that's like it's free. You're like, okay, i can't be mad at that.
00:02:33
Zach Sheets
They definitely set it up for the second one. The second one has a much better poster.
00:02:36
Chris Prime
Second one makes it seem like, you know, Julian Sands is like here to send like magic Armageddon. It's gonna be a wizard fight or something.

Production and Creative Team

00:02:47
Zach Sheets
But yeah, but this was a New World Pictures joint, and they were actually going out of business and like I think went bankrupt when this movie was being made, so I think they just got caught up in that kind of business catastrophe.
00:02:59
Zach Sheets
But like yeah but lots lots of talent in front of and behind the camera. was directed by Steve Miner, who is like a workman-like horror director. He directed like a ton of like two Friday the 13th movies. He did Friday the 13th part two and three. directed House.
00:03:19
Zach Sheets
He directed Lake Placid. He directed Halloween
00:03:24
Chris Prime
So yeah, he just works on projects. He's like, alright, what's my next gig? I don't know.
00:03:29
Zach Sheets
And then...
00:03:29
Chris Prime
There's really there's really no like unique thing like about this style that stands out.
00:03:29
Zach Sheets
No.
00:03:36
Chris Prime
It's not like...
00:03:36
Zach Sheets
no
00:03:38
Chris Prime
but I guess maybe that's why you explained it that way. But man, like it's got some rough cuts. lot of reaction shots that you don't think would be needed, but...
00:03:50
Chris Prime
I don't know it's also like the 90s. Like but you if you tone this movie down, this could be like a kid's movie.
00:03:57
Zach Sheets
Oh, 100%. hundred but Yeah, like, but like the kids have to, like, fight a warlock or something.
00:04:04
Chris Prime
Like, I think I confuse this movie with like three other movies.
00:04:04
Zach Sheets
And then... I
00:04:06
Chris Prime
And I'm like, where's the kids? Don't they show up and like ride their bikes and then scare off a monster?
00:04:12
Zach Sheets
wonder they're trying to get away from that era, cause that was, like, the 80s, kind of Spielberg era. Now we're in the 90s, man. It's the ninety s now.
00:04:18
Chris Prime
Maybe that's why I'm thinking, because it definitely is like it could be a steel Spielberg error. Like.

Character Analysis and Comparisons

00:04:24
Chris Prime
Story, but it happens to fall on what I think is like a 20 year old girl.
00:04:31
Chris Prime
So, yeah, they aged up things.
00:04:33
Zach Sheets
Maybe.
00:04:35
Chris Prime
Everyone's like mysteriously aged in this movie.
00:04:37
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:04:39
Chris Prime
But yeah, anyway, back to what you're saying.
00:04:41
Zach Sheets
I was just going to mention it. It was written by David Toohey who probably most notably like co-created like the Riddick franchise with Vin Diesel along with writing movies like The Fugitive and Waterworld and G.I.
00:04:53
Zach Sheets
Jane.
00:04:55
Chris Prime
Yeah, man, that's a diverse amount of of like different elements and genres. Because it's not like, oh, I get it. like this This sort of could be in that like fantasy world that he knows from Riddick and this.
00:05:11
Chris Prime
But G.I.G.A.N. is such a, like, there is no sci-fi elements or or fantasy elements whatsoever in that.
00:05:17
Zach Sheets
Yeah. wasn This is the second movie. like The first movie he wrote was Critters 2, the main course.
00:05:24
Chris Prime
See, like, I could confuse this movie with Critters. If you show me certain in scenes and Critters 2 especially has a lot of B characters that show up for like one scene and you think they're going around for the whole movie, but like, that's it.
00:05:39
Chris Prime
I say that specifically because I'm a fan of that Mennonite farmer who just is in this movie for like, he's very important, but then like it just sort of like, bye, like we never see him again.
00:05:50
Zach Sheets
I always kind of like to compare it to like Wishmaster, but then I think if you think about like Wishmaster is like so much better.
00:05:56
Chris Prime
Oh yeah, in the Wishmaster and Warlock movie, I used to think Team Warlock as a kid, but now I'm like, oh, it's Wishmaster.
00:06:03
Zach Sheets
Yeah, Wishmaster is like has like way more creative kills and like, like it seems like it actually has a budget.
00:06:09
Chris Prime
That and, like, you root for the Wishmaster at some point.
00:06:14
Zach Sheets
oh because like everyone's awful he'ss he's like making awful people like get their comeuppance
00:06:16
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:06:19
Chris Prime
Where Warlock It's just like, I guess we root for Richard e Grant, but he doesn't do anything cool to be like, man, like.

Time Travel and Plot Progression

00:06:30
Chris Prime
I want to be that guy.
00:06:32
Zach Sheets
man yeah it's it's always insane to me to think that Richard E. Grant was like the star of this schlocky like basically like it's basically horror Terminator
00:06:45
Chris Prime
Yeah, you're right. He's the Kyle Reese.
00:06:47
Zach Sheets
he's the He's the Kyle Reese of this this movie.
00:06:50
Chris Prime
But he looks just like I don't know, like it's just confusing garb he's wearing because he looks almost like a like a Belmont.
00:07:01
Chris Prime
Like more accurate, I guess, to a. Like. New England slash like English. Witch hunter.
00:07:12
Zach Sheets
well he's he's So yeah, he so he's from Boston. because the so The movie starts in 1691 Boston. and they' And then Richard Grant is Giles Redfern, the witch hunter who has captured the warlock.
00:07:26
Chris Prime
But his outfit looks like it's made out of like rat pelt.
00:07:30
Zach Sheets
It's yeah it's all it's all pit's all random pelts.
00:07:30
Chris Prime
Like it.
00:07:32
Zach Sheets
It's like raccoons and yeah whatever else you could find.
00:07:33
Chris Prime
Yeah, like he just looks like a mountain man that like carries this like very dainty whip for for what you think witch hunter is going to have compared to a modern interpretation
00:07:46
Zach Sheets
and his And his, like, we' we see later, like, his very, like, cumbersome witch compass.
00:07:53
Zach Sheets
they yeah You have to, like, constantly, like, assemble and make sure it's, like, lined up properly.
00:07:57
Chris Prime
yep And then it also has to like, you need more material for it.
00:08:04
Chris Prime
Yeah, like it's originally Grant's third movie. I think according to Wikipedia, it's like his third starring movie or like, and he's like in it.
00:08:14
Chris Prime
It's not just, okay, he's a side character. It's gonna be mostly about the girl or like, you know, the Sarah Connor character.
00:08:21
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:08:22
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:08:22
Chris Prime
No, they they share a good amount of screen time.
00:08:24
Chris Prime
And then, if anything, he's the one who has no like growth arc. He just shows up, and does the witch hunting, and then leaves.
00:08:35
Chris Prime
you know it's It's not like...
00:08:35
Zach Sheets
here
00:08:37
Chris Prime
He wants to stay in this time. He wants to, you know, witch hunt in the modern era. it it's It's just like, I'm here. okay cool. I'm in like 300 years in the future.
00:08:49
Chris Prime
Wow. All right. Where's your water? Where's your salt? Like, it's very, like, very basic.
00:08:55
Zach Sheets
Yeah, there's... Both of these guys like time and travel 300 years into 1991 Los Angeles, and neither of them are phased by anything they... Really anything they see. Like, like oh, cars? Whatever.
00:09:12
Zach Sheets
what like Electricity? like Running water? i don't care. yeah The only thing that really like really phases Redfern later is like an airplane.
00:09:24
Chris Prime
Yeah, that's the only time he experiences like modern, guess, technology. And he he sort of just like, okay, I can't do this because it's a sin, I guess.
00:09:38
Zach Sheets
Yeah, only witches fly.
00:09:43
Zach Sheets
But yeah, neith neither like the Warlock or him are just like, like there's there's look they see all this modern technology and they're just like, i' i don't i' mean do I got stuff to do. I don't care. Warlock has to go find the the pages of the Grand Grimoire and then Redford has to hunt him down. They They don't have time to marvel at the wonders of 1991 Los Angeles.
00:10:10
Zach Sheets
It is the... It's not quite Terminator, though, because like they they both... like the The Warlock like shows up like like like a day or like an hour like hours before Redford shows up in in the in the future.
00:10:24
Zach Sheets
like The Warlock crashes through Laurie Singer's and her roommate's like front window. they like the like he's like hanging is's like They're care of for like like a day or two.
00:10:37
Chris Prime
Oh yeah, like, they're just totally fine just, like, being charmed by the warlock. The warlock doesn't even use magic to charm them.
00:10:43
Zach Sheets
just like, oh, he's got an English accent.
00:10:48
Chris Prime
And then they, like, treat him really well and the warlock's just like, hey, time to ruin it. Okay. What was up with that scorpion ring?
00:10:58
Zach Sheets
I... it it It seems like if he like he got it, that like like he needed to get it to like like use powers, but it wasn't it wasn't his ring. we don't see like There wasn't anything in like the the past like opening scene of like, we've got your scorpion ring.
00:11:13
Zach Sheets
like
00:11:13
Chris Prime
yeah
00:11:14
Zach Sheets
You'll never get this back. You'll never get this again.
00:11:16
Chris Prime
And then it's just like that that was like, okay, oh, the ring. He wants to get the ring from the roommate. And then, oh, no, like it just doesn't pay off.
00:11:23
Zach Sheets
has Because it has powers, but then i guess does it have powers? yeah
00:11:28
Chris Prime
See, like it what I thought would be this thing where the warlock was going to scope out the the new setting and then trying to get his power and then like learn about the world to figure out how to dominate it.
00:11:41
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:11:42
Chris Prime
heat the Warlock knows exactly what to do. It doesn't matter at the time period. you know it just oh I go need to go here. Then I need to go here. that it
00:11:50
Zach Sheets
and go Yeah, go go find a psychic.
00:11:50
Chris Prime
There's...
00:11:53
Chris Prime
Okay, so the Warlock does a lot in this two days, if you think about He wakes up from his chart his like teleporter thing.
00:12:03
Zach Sheets
The time tornado.
00:12:04
Chris Prime
Yeah, the time tornado, which i I'm not sure he summoned or someone else summoned. We don't know.
00:12:08
Zach Sheets
i don't yeah I don't, yeah, I don't know where that came from because he was locked up in in, like, the tower and then they, the the village elders condemned him to to be, like, hanged and then burned alive on top of, like, living cats as, like, the punishment.
00:12:21
Chris Prime
Man, just Boston never got that right.
00:12:24
Zach Sheets
But then, then Redfern, like, he kind of, like, he's, like, taunting Redfern and then Redfern leaves but then, like, this storm, this, like, big storm starts rolling in and then that's when, the like, the Titanado, like, hits the tower and sucks in the suckcks in the warlock, and then Redford jumps in the tornado to chase him.
00:12:41
Zach Sheets
They both disappear. But yeah, i don't i don't know where, like, because we don't see the warlock, like, casting, like, a spell or doing anything in the tower like, bring the tornado. maybe Maybe Satan sent the tornado to, like, rescue the warlock? i don't know.
00:12:54
Chris Prime
If he just said, thank you, Satan, for sending me this time tornado, or like there was more incantations like the warlock secretly curse the tower or something.
00:13:06
Chris Prime
I feel like that would have helped just explain how he gets away, because what's stopping the warlock from doing that again?
00:13:14
Zach Sheets
anytime. Yeah.
00:13:15
Chris Prime
Yeah, anytime.
00:13:15
Zach Sheets
If you if he summoned the tornado, like why can't he just do that anytime he wants?
00:13:20
Chris Prime
Anytime that he's been like in a tight bind, he's just like, well, time tornado time.
00:13:24
Zach Sheets
I'll try a different type frame.
00:13:27
Chris Prime
Because in this movie, it opens with the the warlock where he captured. They really don't explain how they capture him. it It's supposed to imply that Richard E. Grant did this?
00:13:38
Chris Prime
Like, guiles?
00:13:39
Zach Sheets
he fuck Yeah, yeah he's but he's but he was chasing him. He finally like he finally caught him It's like, I got you, finally. You're going die for all your crimes.
00:13:47
Chris Prime
And then...
00:13:47
Zach Sheets
He's going to kill my wife.
00:13:49
Chris Prime
But, okay, so, like, was that the plan of the warlock? To be like, okay, I'm gonna get captured so I can summon the time tornado? Or...
00:13:56
Zach Sheets
i don't think I don't think so. I don't think he wanted
00:13:58
Chris Prime
See?

Storyline Speculations and Universe Inconsistencies

00:13:58
Zach Sheets
to get captured.
00:13:59
Chris Prime
No idea. But it's okay. Because if they're going to steal off a Terminator, the Terminators went back in time to get rid of John john Connor.
00:14:12
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:14:13
Chris Prime
Okay, so it's now I went to the future. Wouldn't it make sense for him to try to like punish Giles' like descendant?
00:14:24
Zach Sheets
Yeah, it definitely would have made more sense if, like, Laurie Singer was, like, somewhere related to Redfern or something. It's like like it's like his, you know, great-great-great-great-great-granddaughter or something.
00:14:33
Chris Prime
Yeah, so he's like, he cursed his bloodline. He's like, I'm going to go to the future. Like, they can't stop you now. Like, I'll stop you later. Like, I'll stop like something. It's like part of the curse.
00:14:45
Zach Sheets
Or he's like so or he's like sealed in like a cave or something, and then like there's construction that breaks the cave open and he gets out.
00:14:51
Chris Prime
Oh, the Power Ranger style.
00:14:53
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Something something that yeah like where it's like... It makes more sense how they how they get to the future, what why they why are they going to the future?
00:15:03
Zach Sheets
but i guess yeah But I guess you want to... like How would Redfern get to the future if like if if if they just sealed the warlock in a cave and like for years?
00:15:10
Chris Prime
I mean, you you could do the I think I've seen another movie where it's like another person tries to stop a person, but they end up being frozen together, and it's like... They just time travel by just actually waiting, not just magic portal.
00:15:24
Zach Sheets
I guess you could, like, maybe the world like curses Redfern with like immortality. It's like, you'll you'll never die as long as I'm a alive or something. Or we're we're we're tied together now.
00:15:33
Chris Prime
I could see that. and then But then I guess Renfield would... See, that makes better. That makes way more sense if that started an actual dark universe of warlock stuff. But no, sadly, they didn't figure that out.
00:15:48
Chris Prime
I think like other forms of media by that by 1990, like one had things like this where like they would flush out that idea where, you know, you you you build a society around watching for this warlock or the church is way more prepared to fight warlocks because it seems like no one wrote down that warlocks actually existed.
00:16:05
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:16:15
Chris Prime
You know what Like you would, you would, you, the RG E Grant would be bumping into another modern day witch hunter.
00:16:16
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:16:22
Chris Prime
Just like, okay, Hey, like I just been training on standby. This is the first time like in this generation that this war, which Hunter is like, use because it's like a lot of them have been killed or like it's like rare occasions i'm not saying they need to make like an mib for warlocks or last witch hunter but you get what i mean like you kind of need something that if something the past actually happened and it's like oh wow that actually worked it's you just would not be like well then like 300 years later there's like oh yeah no we're totally over hunting witches
00:16:40
Zach Sheets
or Or The Last Witch Hunter.
00:16:58
Zach Sheets
because yeah cause this is the a universe where, like, actual magic exists. Like, you can you can cast spells and cause things to happen. There's the literal, like, the devil's bible or whatever is out there.
00:17:09
Chris Prime
A grimoire.
00:17:10
Zach Sheets
The grimoire is out there.
00:17:12
Chris Prime
And this is like the biggest grimoire. And then the Boston church sort of did recognize that they did have like these precious pages that are like, you know, witchcraft. And they're like, yeah, but we hid it in this basement.
00:17:24
Zach Sheets
Hmm.
00:17:26
Chris Prime
I just feel like I get it. Like they wanted to make it more grounded where the church didn't believe in witches. But I feel like the guys back then who captured a witch like handle this like semi proof.
00:17:42
Chris Prime
They would be like kind of embarrassed that they didn't tell anyone else about this.
00:17:47
Zach Sheets
Yeah, it's it's it's odd that like Julian Sands is literally the only warlock in this entire universe. like He's the only one who's ever like du had like evil like magic powers to try to undo creation.
00:18:02
Chris Prime
Well, I think it's just because they are pissed at how they're being treated. And there's there's like a moment where Julian Sands does kind of acknowledge that other witches exist.
00:18:15
Chris Prime
When he's with like the the desert kid.
00:18:18
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:18:20
Chris Prime
But they never go that far. they Like, I thought there would be more moments where the warlock... kind of realizes that the evil one in the future like there's way more options it's less witch hunting this time and you know football's cool just uh we'll get into that scene in a bit but yeah we we we it kind of lacks that it it lacks the like i mean the terminator didn't show up and then like get used to eighty it's like the 90s culture, or like 80s culture, right? like
00:18:53
Chris Prime
He stood out, but he at least learned how to blend in. The Warlock never changes as his costume. He's in the same outfit the whole goddamn movie.
00:19:02
Zach Sheets
He doesn't wear shoes.
00:19:06
Zach Sheets
I guess is this is a part of like the thing is like you have to take his shoes off. yeah ki Rip his shoes off! That's source his power. Okay.
00:19:15
Chris Prime
Well, if you bind the toe, the twisting of the screw, that that's an old classic thing. But that was like regular torture that they somehow applied to witch's torture, where if they complain about the iron shackles on their toe and they tighten the bolts, that means they were like more likely a witch, which is insane. Like, what an insane time of going, wow, this hurts them. That means they are a witch.
00:19:39
Zach Sheets
It's also the thing of like, oh, dunk them in a lake, and if they drown, they were a good person. They were a witch. but If they survive, they're witch because they they use their witchcraft to survive being dunked in the the water.

Cassandra's Role and Character Arc

00:19:56
Chris Prime
Oh, yeah. Which, I'm surprised there wasn't, like, a modern-day witch hunter that still used medieval, like, methods.
00:20:08
Chris Prime
I mean, the Mennonite kind of knew, but it's just super unexplained.
00:20:14
Zach Sheets
I do appreciate like some like the the kind the old like superstition stuff they use. like you know Putting nails in his footprints that causes him pain and stuff like that.
00:20:27
Chris Prime
and That part was creative.
00:20:27
Zach Sheets
but
00:20:28
Chris Prime
That actually was the surprising like second act. half at the second Half point of the second act where there's actually cool witch exorcism stuff.
00:20:39
Zach Sheets
What's in the world where he gains like his like magic blasts? Because he finds like the second part of the grimoire. It's been divided into three different sections, and he has find all three and combine them, and then he'll be able to see the name the true name of God, and if he says it backwards, he can like undo all of creation.
00:20:57
Chris Prime
What a weird rule. If you backwards say the name, but then do you have to say it phonetically or You know, I mean, like there's so many ways to read a name and if no one's ever said it out loud or like.
00:21:05
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Yeah.
00:21:13
Chris Prime
This is like an English word, si French word.
00:21:17
Zach Sheets
It started with an R. It was like, it was like row something, and then he didn't get you to say it. but
00:21:21
Chris Prime
Oh, careful, Zach, you say it, you might end the world.
00:21:25
Zach Sheets
Just, just to say it backwards. You have to, you have to have the books and then say it backwards.
00:21:30
Zach Sheets
How crazy is it that that, like, coincidentally, that the first pages are in like, like, Laurie Singer's coffee table?
00:21:37
Chris Prime
Yeah, what what is up with that? like i Is that also supposed to imply about the ring, too?
00:21:45
Zach Sheets
they went to an antique store and just bought like a bunch of like weirdly magical items that they didn't realize were magic.
00:21:54
Chris Prime
So they do drop a small hint in the beginning, where when the warlock breaks through the window, and then it's like, okay, don't put on my couch, that's over a hundred years old couch.
00:22:06
Chris Prime
So...
00:22:06
Zach Sheets
but So Chaz is into like antiques.
00:22:09
Chris Prime
Antiques, right.
00:22:09
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:22:10
Chris Prime
and And picking up Runaways.
00:22:12
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Yeah.
00:22:13
Chris Prime
Which... Lori is just, like... Wait, what's her is her name Lori?
00:22:18
Zach Sheets
Cassandra with a K.
00:22:19
Chris Prime
Cassandra. Yeah, Cassandra. Played by Lori Singer.
00:22:22
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:22:24
Chris Prime
Which... i mean, there's not a lot of backstory because it seems like she just moved to LA just to make it to, to to like,
00:22:34
Zach Sheets
There's not even, yeah, there's not even like, oh she wants to be an actress or she's like trying to break into Hollywood. It's like, I just, i yeah, just i I just showed up and this guy was like, yeah, you can rent room for me. It's fine.
00:22:46
Chris Prime
Because she's just like a waitress. so
00:22:47
Zach Sheets
Yep.
00:22:48
Chris Prime
i I mean, that's not downplaying what a waitress is, but it's not like she was there trying to be an actress. It's just like she was like, okay, well, Sarah Connor did this, so we're going to make her do this.
00:22:59
Zach Sheets
Yeah, really it's the only thing. It's like, yeah, we got to copy Terminator.
00:23:03
Chris Prime
And it's funny because like by the third act, they make her kind of realize that religion is true. And it doesn't start with her like kind of being an atheist or sort of like anti-religion.
00:23:19
Chris Prime
But that kind of happens at the end. So like her her character growth is that she learns to realize that there is a god.
00:23:30
Zach Sheets
believe.
00:23:31
Chris Prime
believe that It does not come in at all.
00:23:33
Zach Sheets
Not be selfish, because like the only reason she's like going along in the first place is because the warlock casts an aging spell on her, and she's like aging 20 years every day.
00:23:43
Chris Prime
It was nuts because they really tried to do their best with like limited aging makeup of 1991.
00:23:51
Zach Sheets
Well, yeah I guess the thing was they had more elaborate makeup, and then Laurie Singer on the day was like, Actually, I'm not going to wear the the makeup. So like, oh, fuck. All right. I guess.
00:24:05
Zach Sheets
Can we just like, can we put this wig on at least?
00:24:08
Chris Prime
Was she afraid that like she would not be recognizable? This movie has like five actors in it.
00:24:14
Zach Sheets
Yeah, it's just like, they had like a, apparently like a whole like series of makeups, like progressively age her. And she's like, I'm not going to do any of that stuff. So they're like, all right.
00:24:24
Chris Prime
yeah
00:24:26
Zach Sheets
I guess the only thing, that when she turned 60, she agreed to like wear like the cheeks and like a chin. But I guess they had like way more elaborate, more convincing old age makeup.
00:24:39
Chris Prime
See, that's...
00:24:39
Zach Sheets
And prosthetics and stuff.
00:24:41
Chris Prime
I feel like the real prosthetics and and like actual physical location stuff like that, that that part's fine. like that That holds up.
00:24:51
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:24:51
Chris Prime
It's the everything else special effects department that kind of gets thrown under the onto the under the bus of effects. Yeah. But, I mean, you think that's going to be like the long-running effect?
00:25:07
Chris Prime
That aging makeup only lasts maybe a half an hour of the movie.
00:25:13
Zach Sheets
Well, if she's if she's aging like 20 years every day, it can only go so long before she's dead. so they have to be like, well, we can get like maybe two days out of this. We turn her 60 and then she like she gets the bracelet back.
00:25:24
Zach Sheets
Because the Warlock stole a bracelet that she wears and then she has to recover that and then it'll like break the curse that he put on her. Which okay I'm kind of disappointed that like that's the only time we actually see the Warlock do like a full like you know spell incantation curse.
00:25:40
Zach Sheets
he's like when He does he does like the age spell on her.
00:25:43
Chris Prime
Yeah. Everything else is sort of off-screen or just sort of happens.
00:25:49
Zach Sheets
Yep. Once he gets his magic blast, that that's it. He's like, I'm doing this now.
00:25:55
Chris Prime
Everything can be solved with just magic blasting things.
00:25:58
Zach Sheets
Flying around and blasting people with magic.
00:26:02
Chris Prime
But yeah, let's get back to just Richard E. Grant showing up and then just... get it doing his best Kyle Reese like I'm here to to save like you all from the warlock and then no one believes him and then he takes on the LAPD by just like whipping the air
00:26:21
Zach Sheets
yeah And it gets tased.
00:26:26
Chris Prime
There should definitely be like an extra scene where he's in like the modern prison and you know he's bunked with like a bunch of LA criminals, but like he's able to do things that kind of like you know use magic or like...
00:26:45
Zach Sheets
or He's like telling them about Warlocks. he like like They get like super interested in in it.
00:26:51
Zach Sheets
Oh shit, there's actually magic out there?
00:26:51
Chris Prime
Or he does...
00:26:55
Chris Prime
Or he learns something about the world, but like it's all skewed from just like a different perspective.
00:26:58
Zach Sheets
it its yeah he gets all of his knowledge of like the modern day from like his days since he's in prison.
00:27:04
Chris Prime
Yep.

Warlock's Abilities and Special Effects

00:27:05
Chris Prime
And then... Yeah, but then it's like, okay, now it's a road trip to try to stop the Warlock. And they don't know where they're going but because they're just following the compass.
00:27:15
Zach Sheets
Yeah, so so Richard E. Grant has a witch compass that seems like super inconvenient to use. because It's in this like giant wooden box. You have to take it out of the box, put it on the top of the box. make its It seems like super fragile and it just seems like a pain to use. But then if he has some of the blood of the warlock, it'll point in the direction hes the warlock is in.
00:27:41
Zach Sheets
it's kind find They both have, like, a compass thing because the warlock rips out, the like, the psyche goes through, like, rips out her eyes, and then the eyes are guide him to, like, the grimoire pages.
00:27:52
Zach Sheets
So he's just holding, like, he's, like, two eyes in his hand.
00:27:53
Chris Prime
do you
00:27:53
Chris Prime
do you Which, the eyes don't look good. like they They look like hand puppets.
00:27:59
Zach Sheets
No!
00:28:02
Chris Prime
Tiny finger puppets. But...
00:28:04
Zach Sheets
Like, like i guess they they're the like it's, like, the demon's eyes because, like, she turns into a demon.
00:28:10
Chris Prime
doesn't make sense then.
00:28:11
Chris Prime
Do you think that he had to use a psychic? he just wanted like Does he know what a modern day psychic was?
00:28:19
Zach Sheets
i don't yeah i It seems like he usually tricked anybody or like just like forced anyone into like get like channeling Satan. I guess maybe because she was already... But she was a fake, so it wasn't like she entered the spirit realm or something. She was like a artist. But then actually does get possessed by whatever demon Satan...
00:28:40
Zach Sheets
but then she like she actually does get possessed by like whatever you been satan And then, yeah, is Isabelle or whatever?
00:28:47
Chris Prime
Isabel or something?
00:28:51
Zach Sheets
I guess maybe just maybe just, like, him, like, suggesting it, like, opened her up to, like, be possessed by him or something?
00:28:58
Zach Sheets
i don't know. don't
00:29:00
Chris Prime
Yeah, I don't know. It's such a like... It's a cool scene! The makeup for that wasn't bad.
00:29:06
Chris Prime
But yeah, you can tell this movie starts fluctuating in budgets.
00:29:11
Zach Sheets
where like, yeah, we got money for this, but don't have money for, like, I don't know, convincing flying effects.
00:29:17
Chris Prime
So there's that part where now we'll talk about the desert scene where the warlock travels to Colorado.
00:29:28
Zach Sheets
On foot. he's He's on foot.
00:29:32
Chris Prime
Oh, yeah, no, he he like runs real quick.
00:29:36
Zach Sheets
That's after he gets his, like, flight gel, though.
00:29:39
Chris Prime
No, the flight gel is him drinking.
00:29:39
Zach Sheets
He doesn't
00:29:42
Chris Prime
thing Was that wait?
00:29:44
Zach Sheets
He doesn't he doesn't hit there the but like his he walks all the way from Los Angeles to like wherever he is, like the desert, or like Colorado, wherever he is. And then when he he gets hit's like his flight, you know the ingredients for his flight spell afterwards.
00:30:00
Zach Sheets
And then after that, it's like the scene where the cop's like tracking him. He's going 100 miles an hour. It looks like it's like he's like surfing down this the like the road. That's like after he gets like his flight powers.
00:30:10
Chris Prime
Okay, okay. Okay, so there's that... The scene before where he's talking to the boy. Now, this is kind of like a...
00:30:16
Zach Sheets
Yep.
00:30:18
Chris Prime
Like, almost like a Terminator 2 moment where it's like he... The warlock is learning how to feel.
00:30:25
Zach Sheets
It's... like Well, it's... Remind me of that scene from Con Air, where Steve Buscemi goes and has tea with the little girl.
00:30:30
Chris Prime
yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's almost like villain and an innocent kid. And they have like a moment together. like they They kind of just bond over...
00:30:40
Chris Prime
like you know Yeah.
00:30:41
Zach Sheets
but going to church it's like it's like my dad doesn't believe in church he's like oh i don't believe in church either
00:30:47
Chris Prime
But the warlock's like, hmm, you're not baptized, huh?
00:30:51
Zach Sheets
and then well then he's like well how do you it's like you're not like which is flying broomsticks like oh no we don't have any broomsticks to fly it's like what do need then because it's like cut to you know him drinking fat in the middle desert
00:31:08
Zach Sheets
Because it's like you need and unbaptized young male fat to, in some sort of concoction, and they'll let you like fly.
00:31:16
Chris Prime
Okay, wait, wait, wait. So there's like this rough editing because it cuts away. I'm not sure if you see him drink the fat right after or it cuts to Richard Grant and...
00:31:30
Chris Prime
and Oh, no.
00:31:31
Zach Sheets
think it's because of them showing up and then they kind like, oh, it's like a boy got murdered.
00:31:38
Chris Prime
Yeah, like three days ago or something, he said. Like, it wasn't that day.
00:31:43
Zach Sheets
Because a bunch of guys like go on and hunt because they think a coyote did it because it's like, oh, he got really torn up because a coyote did it. And so they had then then it's like the guys came like went around hunted a coyote and was like, here's the coyote that killed the kid.
00:31:57
Zach Sheets
we got him.
00:31:59
Zach Sheets
And then Richard Grant goes to the mother the mother of the kid is like, was he baptized? and He's like, no.
00:32:06
Chris Prime
it Then it goes to like the the fat drinking scene where the warlock is just making soup in the woods.
00:32:06
Zach Sheets
And it's just... Yep.
00:32:15
Zach Sheets
yup boy soup.
00:32:19
Zach Sheets
And then then after he drinks, that he we get to see where like he's... There's a cop side the side road and his speed detector is going off. and It's like 100 miles

Climactic Battles and Conclusion

00:32:28
Zach Sheets
an hour. And then you just see the warlock kind of like... It looks like he's... i mean it kind of looks like like the this special effects of the Flash, but like done in the worst way possible.
00:32:40
Chris Prime
Very rough version of it.
00:32:40
Zach Sheets
Which is like... where it's just like Julian Sands is kind of just standing there, and it's like but in like a surfing motion. With his arm up, like, I'm i'm flying!
00:32:51
Chris Prime
This is what they call flight back then. But you think that's going to be the best flying effect that they got, but it somehow gets worse.
00:33:02
Zach Sheets
Yeah, when he but he actually starts like flying around in the air. because that's When he's he's on the road, like he's low to the ground, kind of like just like like hovering above the ground, but then later on, he's like fully like flying around in the air.
00:33:15
Chris Prime
Yeah, and it's very, like, stage play quality. His feet don't move.
00:33:21
Zach Sheets
there...
00:33:21
Chris Prime
It's just, like, you definitely feel like he's being dangled by a crane.
00:33:22
Zach Sheets
Yes!
00:33:26
Zach Sheets
I'm surprised you don't see the cables. At Santa Point's.
00:33:30
Zach Sheets
at saint it a points
00:33:31
Chris Prime
Yeah. So, let's talk about the part where they get into the the Mennonite farmer's barn.
00:33:39
Zach Sheets
Yeah, which which somehow the second group of pages from the grimoire are in like this family's attic. they They just got it for some reason.
00:33:48
Chris Prime
And they don't even acknowledge that they have this secret witch bible thing in their house. They introduce this family where it seems like the dad is a hardcore Mennonite, but the son and his wife have moved on from that teaching.
00:34:05
Zach Sheets
Hmm.
00:34:06
Chris Prime
But the dad recognizes the signs, the evilness of what's approaching. It doesn't explain...
00:34:13
Zach Sheets
it's like it's a cream curdles like couple of couple of things that yeah
00:34:17
Chris Prime
Horses sweat the day.
00:34:20
Chris Prime
Flames burn weird.
00:34:22
Zach Sheets
yeah pure blue flame
00:34:25
Chris Prime
Yeah, that's the presence of a warlock. Pretty cool. Pretty cool that like there are some established rules to detect a warlock that doesn't require the witch compass. again, really interesting character.
00:34:36
Chris Prime
We just don't see a lot of them. He doesn't really join the main characters on their journey. He doesn't come back as like a surprise third act like I'm here to help.
00:34:44
Zach Sheets
yes
00:34:49
Chris Prime
But that that Mennonite farmer is just prepared. He's like, alright, let me paint. Let me, yeah.
00:34:54
Zach Sheets
The hex mark on the wall, under on the side of my barn so that people people will know there's a witch here.
00:35:00
Chris Prime
I mean.
00:35:00
Zach Sheets
Yeah, but then and then Richie Grant and Laurie Singer show up and then they kind of they get into the big tussle with the the warlock.
00:35:07
Chris Prime
but Before we get into that, I just want to say they they show up like Giles and Cassandra show up and they're like, where's the warlock? And the Mennonite farmer is like, OK, over here. like he He's like unfazed by there is a like 16th century, a 16th century mountain man warlock hunter in his house.
00:35:17
Zach Sheets
Upstairs.
00:35:20
Zach Sheets
guy like a pelt suit. Yeah.
00:35:27
Chris Prime
It's like that's not the strangest thing, whatever. Like this is this is a casual thing that happens a lot.
00:35:32
Chris Prime
You know, it's not like the Mennonite goes, man, it's just like in my like, our like witch hunting training or it's it's like, okay.
00:35:44
Chris Prime
I'm not sure about Mennonite religions, but I'm pretty sure like witch hunting isn't part of their like process.
00:35:52
Zach Sheets
There's also the weird thing they have to put pennies in their mouth to protect you from random magic blasts.
00:36:03
Chris Prime
It doesn't come back, right? Like, no one...
00:36:07
Zach Sheets
Just for that one scene, the Mennonite dad and Cassandra put pennies in their mouth.
00:36:13
Zach Sheets
And then Giles goes into the attic to face off against the warlock. and he has now But now he has magic blast powers because he has he's powered up with the second half of the grimoire. Mm-hmm.
00:36:23
Chris Prime
yeah he spams that move.
00:36:27
Chris Prime
But the best weapon appears in the scene. The weathermane.
00:36:30
Zach Sheets
yes i The iron weather, like i because witches are weak or to oh iron. So yeah, Giles rips off like the the iron weather vane, throws it at Julian Sands takes him down.
00:36:45
Chris Prime
He launches it pretty well, like in it like from a ground level and and hits Julian Sands in the air in this slow-moving flying scene.
00:36:56
Zach Sheets
he's it's like It's like the Simpsons. like He's very slowly getting away.
00:37:01
Chris Prime
I don't understand how the scene prior to this, the warlock was running super fast, but when evening yeah when he flies, it's like an air balloon.
00:37:07
Zach Sheets
like 100 miles an hour yeah
00:37:11
Chris Prime
Just like, alright, taking off now.
00:37:11
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:37:15
Chris Prime
But yeah, that that weather vane does come back. like it You think that's going one-off weapon, but like it it it travels with them.
00:37:23
Zach Sheets
yeah they just take it's like we're taking this
00:37:26
Chris Prime
It's very effective as a witch-hunting weapon.
00:37:30
Zach Sheets
and they they almost they And they almost get the warlock locked back up in his you know the the toe like locks, but then he puts the evil eye on the Mennonite and makes his eyes start bleeding.
00:37:44
Chris Prime
I do like that Giles is like, I have to protect the Mennonite guy. Like, he... If not, he's dead. So he does care about people.
00:37:55
Chris Prime
Unlike other things, other movies where the hunters are like, I have a priority just to kill this thing. like
00:38:01
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I have to focus on the mission. that's The mission is the only thing that matters.
00:38:05
Chris Prime
But he was...
00:38:05
Zach Sheets
But then...
00:38:07
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:38:09
Zach Sheets
Cassandra goes after him. Because the world gets away and it's like trying to get away in a rail yard.
00:38:14
Chris Prime
Yeah, that's it's cool that Cassandra sort of steps up into this hunter role where she is supposedly like 60.
00:38:22
Zach Sheets
this point she's 60, yeah.
00:38:25
Chris Prime
And she's playing around in the sand, which I thought was pretty interesting. like If you hurt the warlock's imprints on the ground, the warlock feels it.
00:38:36
Chris Prime
That warlock walked around a lot of places, so I'm not sure how, like, your old footprints are not being affected.
00:38:45
Zach Sheets
yeah And, like seemed like, it seemed pretty difficult to find his footprints. She only found, like, one or two of them.
00:38:52
Chris Prime
Maybe it has to be, like, fresh prints, and then the warlock has to be not wearing shoes.
00:38:57
Zach Sheets
Close, yeah.
00:38:58
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:38:59
Zach Sheets
And I did also, like like, she finds, like, his head print, and then, like, like like put like jams in his head and then like that really really like gets to him
00:39:08
Chris Prime
Yeah, that was pretty clever. That part I do give this movie for at least doing an action sequence where like an older character can affect this like powerful being.
00:39:20
Zach Sheets
is
00:39:22
Chris Prime
I mean, it seemed like Home Alone pranks that she's doing to him, like just stabbing his feet.
00:39:26
Zach Sheets
yeah but but she does get her bracelet back and she does transform back into like her 20 year old self
00:39:34
Chris Prime
Yeah, and then there's like still more movie left. You figure this is kind of like the first and second act tying into a final third.
00:39:38
Zach Sheets
Yes. Yeah.
00:39:44
Chris Prime
No, there's like a whole sequence where like they have to go to an airport and fly to Boston. and That's like another big thing.
00:39:50
Zach Sheets
like, yeah, it's because I think, I think Cassandra comes with the the idea of like, we got to fly that church. It's in Boston that where they, they originated and like figure out where they set set the three pages.
00:40:02
Zach Sheets
we'll, we can get the, we can get the last batch of pages and stop before he does.
00:40:07
Chris Prime
I mean, it's pretty smart to get ahead of it. Like, you just need to go to the location. You don't need to follow the warlock.
00:40:14
Zach Sheets
Because you can figure out where he's going to end up, then you can like be there either like get the pages first or like ambush him and stop him.
00:40:24
Zach Sheets
But I love this airport scene. Even for pre-911, early flight flying, it's absolutely insane. it's still it's like absolutely insane
00:40:34
Zach Sheets
they let this, like, guy in pelts onto a plane with, like, a giant weather vane, you're just like, alright. wait Let me take the, I'll put that in the overhead compartment for you, sir.
00:40:34
Chris Prime
Oh yeah.
00:40:47
Zach Sheets
Also, I don't, I didn't understand, like, Cassandra's, like, scam with the credit card. Like, she unplugs the machine so it doesn't charge it, but it,
00:40:55
Chris Prime
I guess she just unplugs the internet connection to it so it can't make an outside charge.
00:41:01
Zach Sheets
But then but then but but they're just like, oh, the machine doesn't work. You're free a free flight. Here you go.
00:41:06
Chris Prime
Yeah, what yeah just it sort of skips it. I mean, the movie didn't want to teach people how to do real credit card fraud.
00:41:12
Zach Sheets
cry fraud. yeah yeah
00:41:13
Chris Prime
Because I'm pretty sure once you unplug it, it's just like, okay, well, this is obviously unplugged.
00:41:18
Zach Sheets
It's like, oh, my machine's not working. need cash now. like We can't take credit payments.
00:41:21
Chris Prime
It's like, okay, we all, yeah. A business would just be like, you need to pay in cash or else you don't get on this plane.
00:41:28
Zach Sheets
But yeah, it's just like, oh. It seems like she does it all the time. It's like something she does it constantly. It's like, look at this little trick I learned. Unplug the machine.
00:41:38
Chris Prime
But like her credit card fraud is just weird because it's like, OK, just pay, use a credit card, and just sign whatever name. Like, yeah, I guess.
00:41:46
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:41:47
Chris Prime
And then the other one where it's like, OK, unplug the credit card reader, which I don't think is. Like. at least it's not the scene where like they they punch card it or like where were they like run it through the carbon paper.
00:42:05
Zach Sheets
Oh, yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:42:07
Chris Prime
I guess it was a show that like that's that was like less of a charge card. Like, you know, i mean, oh, it's the modern era, you could just lie on credit cards. But like it doesn't.
00:42:20
Chris Prime
Richard, like she it's funny because this this movie does bring up like that three times the credit card fraud. It's not like a scene where Richard Grant needs to pay for something with the credit card. He does. Oh, I learned how to use the credit card fraud tricks.
00:42:35
Zach Sheets
it's It's also crazy just like, you know, Richard she Grant has like no ID. He has no, like nothing. and they're just like, yeah, get on the flight. It's going to leave soon. get Better get up there.
00:42:48
Zach Sheets
can still leave in five minutes. Get on that plane.
00:42:50
Chris Prime
Oh no, that that was a real thing.
00:42:52
Zach Sheets
i know that was the thing in the 90s, but like it's it's still even by that standard, it's still crazy.
00:42:56
Chris Prime
Yeah, you could you could definitely fly. Because you just treat it like airplane, kind of like a bus, where like you don't really need ID for a bus ticket sometimes.
00:43:06
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:43:07
Chris Prime
They're just like, okay, you pay? Cool.
00:43:09
Zach Sheets
where so There's also so many early 90s movies where it's just like, oh, like but what's the next flight out of here? like Just give me to the next flight. you know like you're not You're not booking ahead time.
00:43:19
Chris Prime
Oh yeah, that
00:43:20
Zach Sheets
You're just like, give me the next flight. I don't care what it is. Just give me that next flight.
00:43:24
Chris Prime
Oh, do you have any luggages to clear? No. Like, uh-oh.
00:43:27
Zach Sheets
you have an ID? No. Here's cash. All right.
00:43:34
Chris Prime
Yeah, we're to have all the questions with the police.
00:43:40
Chris Prime
So, they kind of make it to Boston, but this movie didn't have the budget to show Boston, so this made it to a house.
00:43:48
Zach Sheets
Yes! They made it to like streets like a street set and then like a cemetery set.
00:43:56
Chris Prime
Yeah, that cemetery set is rough. Because there's certain parts where they definitely feel like, okay, this is like a soundstage. And then they did some outside shots where they're actually in a... I guess a park?
00:44:10
Zach Sheets
Maybe, yeah.
00:44:12
Chris Prime
But does it feel like the end scene is a commentary on like... real estate rules or whatever?
00:44:19
Zach Sheets
Kinda.
00:44:21
Chris Prime
Just because...
00:44:21
Zach Sheets
It's kinda like the end of Poltergeist, where it's just like, you moved you you only moved the headstones!
00:44:27
Chris Prime
Yeah. Yeah. yeah It's like, you didn't move the the bodies. You just moved the headstones. Oh no. It's all like cursive land.
00:44:33
Zach Sheets
Yeah, because like cause there's going to be... so when they go They go to like a a Catholic church, where the i guess, where the graveyard was, and then the priest is like, oh, yeah, I got information. like It's buried at this grave graveyard.
00:44:48
Zach Sheets
Cemetery. You have to go there find it. then, yeah, they they go there and they find out, oh, it's it's in... They find Redfern's grave.
00:45:02
Zach Sheets
with With a body in it. I'm still trying to figure out the time loop mechanics of that situation.
00:45:11
Zach Sheets
Where it's like... He like he died like he died and then they barely it's like they buried him with the grimoire pages, but then he had to go into the future to make sure it happened.
00:45:27
Chris Prime
Well, it showed it showed them that the past, like in the future, they're successful because then he he ended up back in the past.
00:45:34
Zach Sheets
yeah yes
00:45:38
Zach Sheets
but yeah his his like tomb is in like is on consecrated ground but then they find out like actually it's not because this development company is moved everything and they're building like condos and whatever else shopping center or whatever so it's like half the cemetery isn't consecrated ground anymore
00:45:58
Zach Sheets
And then that's when like the warlock shows up. cause The warlock actually goes to the priest and is like, I'll make your twins come out stillborn if you don't tell me where the grimoire pages are. and But then, yes, they he ends the cemetery too and they have like a the big fight, which I love where it's like it just ends up with like where she's being like, alright, you and me, mano a mano. No magic, no weapons.
00:46:22
Zach Sheets
Fist fight.
00:46:24
Zach Sheets
And then the Warlock is like, alright, sure. it's like and the Warlock has, like, I feel like the Warlock has, like, no, like, martial skills at all. Like, he doesn't have any combat skills.
00:46:35
Chris Prime
Well, you think about it, it's still like 16th century pre-boxing skills, so it's a lot of like slap fighting because they didn't really write down what a martial art was yet.
00:46:41
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:46:47
Zach Sheets
But it definitely seems like he's at, like, a huge disadvantage. Like,
00:46:50
Chris Prime
and Yeah, at least like Giles is a witch hunter, so like he has to like use tools and I guess sort of what you consider boxing. Yeah. But, yeah, the Warlock's just like, I could just blast you, i could just lift you in the air, i could, don't know, throw birds at them?
00:47:11
Zach Sheets
could do a lot of things, they just didn't have the budget to show him do a lot of things. it's like we we we got We got these orange magic blast effects.
00:47:14
Chris Prime
I know.
00:47:17
Zach Sheets
That's all we could do.
00:47:19
Chris Prime
And then we ran out of money for that, so we don't even have money for, like, win anymore. Which, do you want to mention that the Warlock does show up at that same church and just sort of threatens the people?
00:47:31
Zach Sheets
what i mentioned yeah he like he yeah he'd go like what we actually like he goes like the priest in like in his house and is like tell me what the pages are it's like he's able to tell that his wife his wife pregnant wife is has twins
00:47:45
Chris Prime
but i'm just saying like After that, after that was like the last special effects scene. They're like, okay, we we can't do that again. and We ran out of money.
00:47:52
Zach Sheets
and yeah
00:47:54
Chris Prime
So that's why it's like a slap fight. Great.
00:47:58
Zach Sheets
Well, I do like... Because Gael takes some of the like Consecrated Saiyan and throws it in the Warlock's face. He's like, oh, there's no rules again? Alright, I'm going blast magic down your throat. So Val's like puking up magic.
00:48:14
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:48:16
Zach Sheets
But it's interesting, like Laurie the one that actually like does like the killing blow because she gets thrown into the bay. bay which is like salt water, and she like fills her insulin needles, which has been like a running thing in the entire entire movie. Like, oh, she's she's she's a diabetic. She has like insulin.
00:48:32
Zach Sheets
And she uses her insulin needles full of salt water and like chips jams into like the Warlock's neck. So he's he's like injected with salt.
00:48:41
Zach Sheets
But it's weird because like, I feel like Giles said it had to be purified salt to be able to work.
00:48:45
Chris Prime
So is the Boston Bay full of terrified salt?
00:48:47
Zach Sheets
So the Boston Bay is like purified salt.

Sequel Potential and Cultural Impact

00:48:51
Chris Prime
Maybe it's blessed by Boston priests?
00:48:56
Chris Prime
Yeah, now that you mention it, I kind of forgot that like the insulin thing does come back in a big way. They do bring up the fact that she's a diabetic, so it's like that's why she has like the needle.
00:49:09
Chris Prime
But i also feel like I thought she was going to inject him with insulin and that's going some... like anti-witch thing.
00:49:17
Zach Sheets
they didn't have that back then, so it's like unknown like weakness.
00:49:21
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's just like Satan wasn't prepared for that. Like, they'll drink boy fat, but like they just can't have so much insulin in them to have like a liver shut down, like an organ.
00:49:33
Zach Sheets
ye
00:49:35
Chris Prime
Like, if you're healthy and you get more insulin, it's not good for you. You know, you don't become more.
00:49:41
Zach Sheets
I can eat all the sugar dough
00:49:43
Chris Prime
yeah We can process all this. Woo!
00:49:46
Zach Sheets
Give me all the cake.
00:49:50
Zach Sheets
But yeah, but he gets like, he gets to like, uh, injected with salt water and explodes.
00:49:55
Zach Sheets
And then the, uh, the tombstone changes to like, it gets like an inscription on it, which I guess means even more so that they won.
00:50:03
Zach Sheets
I forget think of what it says, but it's like, I'll remember our time to forever or something.
00:50:10
Chris Prime
Yeah, so he he writes like a remembrance because he, like, I guess, Cassandra.
00:50:16
Zach Sheets
he knows He knows that she's going to be standing is standing there at that in the future looking at his tombstone. So he wanted to write a message to her or something, maybe?
00:50:25
Chris Prime
Maybe every rote history did like a back to the future thing where his tombstone now is more meaningful.
00:50:31
Zach Sheets
yeah but then and But then another time tornado shows up and takes the gals back to the past. Who summoned that time tornado? I don't know. Maybe because like the warlock's dead, so spell is broken or something?
00:50:52
Zach Sheets
which yeah I guess that would mean like that the warlock one that cast the original time tornado spell.
00:50:58
Chris Prime
Oh.
00:50:59
Zach Sheets
And then he's dead now he's dead and it's like now it's reversing itself or something?
00:51:03
Chris Prime
So like if he's dead like so none of the events of the movie happen?
00:51:12
Zach Sheets
I mean, the events of the movie happened, but I guess i guess just like to to to like bring Redfern back to the past, like i don't know I don't know. Where where did where the like new Time Tornado show up from?
00:51:23
Chris Prime
Yeah, good point. i like I thought maybe he killed him and then undid some sort of magic. And I guess the time portal for... was part of the Warlock's magic?
00:51:34
Zach Sheets
and Yeah, it's like yeah the Warlock's magic is gone now, so then it unleashes like the spell.
00:51:40
Zach Sheets
However it happens, like he goes back he goes back to the past, and then Cassandra does another like super smart thing, which is bury the Grimoire in like the Bonneville Salt Flats.
00:51:51
Zach Sheets
So like yeah you you know if Warlocks are weak to salt, i guess that's the best place in order to like bury something in salt.
00:51:59
Chris Prime
Yeah, and it's like, just in case there is more evil, matt because it's like the like, I would also spread the grimoire apart again. i wouldn't just marry it together in one place.
00:52:07
Zach Sheets
Yes.
00:52:09
Chris Prime
Because a human could just, like, dig it up and be fine.
00:52:13
Zach Sheets
Because you can' cause you can't destroy it because indestruct its those pages are indestructible. like You can rip them apart and they just heal themselves back together. So I guess you can't destroy it You have to like hide it.
00:52:25
Zach Sheets
But it doesn't really matter because the Grimmar doesn't come back in the second one. The second one is totally standalone. It's all about runestones now.
00:52:34
Zach Sheets
Which is the craziest part of this like trilogy is that none of the movies like are like related to each other at all.
00:52:40
Chris Prime
yeah
00:52:41
Zach Sheets
Like, the the only connecting one thing between one and two is that Julian Sands comes back. And then by three, it's like not even you remember of that, because it's it's like Bruce Payne is the warlock in the third one.
00:52:52
Chris Prime
yeah Well, I mean, there must be non-connecting stories.
00:52:56
Zach Sheets
Yeah. just just stories Stories that just happen to have like a warlock.
00:53:04
Zach Sheets
i feel like theyre I feel like they're trying to make this like a kind of like a franchise like a bigger franchise. You know, it got like a novel, it got a comic book series, it got a video game.
00:53:13
Chris Prime
Yeah, what was the video game like?
00:53:16
Zach Sheets
I've seen, i think I've seen like the SNS version. It's like, it's it's kind of like a platformer. It kind of it reminds me a bit of like, have you seen like the Bram Stoker's Dracula game?
00:53:28
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:53:29
Zach Sheets
It kind of reminds me that, like, gameplay-wise. You kind of have, like... I think you're playing as the warlock.
00:53:36
Zach Sheets
So you're kind of like... You're, like, the bad guy. Just, like, go around just, like, blowing people up and, like, getting, like, the the runes. <unk> So it's actually more based on, like, the second movie.
00:53:46
Zach Sheets
But, yeah. it's It's a... You know, it's a... decent cult kind of like horror movie.
00:53:55
Zach Sheets
i always have fun when I rewatch it.
00:53:58
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's definitely a cult movie that, like, I think you just have to be, like, in that time frame to understand, like, the cheesiness.
00:54:10
Chris Prime
Because now you show it people, be like, this can't be, like, good. No, this movie is, like, has, like, insane talent, like, behind it.
00:54:19
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:54:21
Zach Sheets
I Richard Grant, like, how many how many times has he been nominated for, like, Oscars or

Discussion on Enhancing Elements and Style

00:54:25
Zach Sheets
Golden Globes? Hmm.
00:54:27
Chris Prime
Yeah, and the thing is, he stood out as like this like stage actor, very like high performance. like And then it's just kind of like, now watch him do stunts and fight a warlock with his hands.
00:54:41
Zach Sheets
Hmm.
00:54:44
Zach Sheets
like mash salt into a whip with his teeth. Watch
00:54:48
Chris Prime
yeah Yeah, watch that. That...
00:54:50
Zach Sheets
him eat just chew a whip.
00:54:50
Chris Prime
if
00:54:51
Zach Sheets
Is that the best way to salt a whip? Is Is just chew on it? sala whip is just like chew on it
00:55:00
Chris Prime
don't know if like what that like it just the saliva and the salt and that like coats the thing. Why won't you just use like water like just make a water salute salt solution?
00:55:11
Zach Sheets
Or, like, a sort glue or something. Like, we have glue in the year 1991 now. Yeah. Well,
00:55:18
Chris Prime
Well they don't have no time to introduce modern amenities.
00:55:21
Zach Sheets
yeah I think we were talking... like There should have been a like there should have a scene where, like, he, like, kind of, like, got modern weaponry or something. Like, goes like, a military surplus store. It's like, wow, look at all this stuff I could use. like Or maybe maybe he, like...
00:55:38
Chris Prime
Or like, no, I got one better.
00:55:38
Zach Sheets
but a crossbow or something.
00:55:40
Chris Prime
I got one better. He takes him to like a historical museum and that's where he sees the medieval weapons.
00:55:46
Zach Sheets
yeah he's just like, he's just picking like any weapon he wants now. Like any like medieval weapon.
00:55:50
Chris Prime
But like, but I feel like that would have been a costly shot. Like, if you you know this movie was, the studio was going under while trying to film this, like, coherent plot, and in order to make it exciting, yeah, that I think that is what you would do, because, like, other movies have done those beats, but because they eliminated it, you just have to keep it very focused on this road trip and, like, Richie E. Grant, like, putting a rope in his mouth and, like, licking salt.
00:56:22
Chris Prime
which I think that straight up was probably like, right, just, you're going to do this. You're gonna put this dirty whip and salt in your mouth and just like do your best acting.
00:56:35
Chris Prime
Meanwhile, the, the Laurie Singer didn't want to wear old age prosthetics, but they made Richard Grant lick a whip.
00:56:42
Zach Sheets
It's like, Kassi just eats salt and like put it on the like Chew on this like old like leather whip.
00:56:48
Chris Prime
Yeah, that, that's like low budget. That is such a like,
00:56:50
Zach Sheets
And wear like and where' like super price super hot pelts the entire time.
00:56:57
Chris Prime
He never takes it off. like Just like how Julian Sands' outfit is like this Shakespearean cosplay, Richie Grant, he's he's wearing that throughout the whole damn movie.
00:57:04
Zach Sheets
o
00:57:09
Zach Sheets
but also, Laurie Singer's in that insane like silver like like so snowsuit, basically. She has that like silver jacket.
00:57:19
Chris Prime
Does she wear the whole thing?
00:57:22
Zach Sheets
A lot of them i love it she's wearing. It and it shows us that that like like really, like, that pink, like, fluffy, like, top.
00:57:27
Chris Prime
Hmm.

Final Thoughts and Teaser for Next Episode

00:57:28
Chris Prime
Yeah, she definitely looks like a 80s like she looks like Gem.
00:57:32
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Or, like, it was, like, Space Channel 9.
00:57:39
Chris Prime
Kind of. But yeah, it's such a like 80s, 90s fashion.
00:57:45
Zach Sheets
Well, it was it was it's definitely, like, very it was, like, very, like, space-like. It was, like, looks like like a space suit kind of thing.
00:57:52
Chris Prime
It's the shimmer.
00:57:53
Zach Sheets
but shit yeah It was very silver and shimmery, yeah.
00:57:56
Chris Prime
i mean Again, great time capsule of like a early horror movie for kids because this is definitely like I think they didn't even censor as much when it was on TV. It's just like, hey, it's Warlock. and It's like, all right, has no nudity, no, no action that like you would want to do like, you know, i mean, it's not like, OK, hey, we're going to teach you how to do like black magic with like real ingredients.
00:58:25
Zach Sheets
Yep.
00:58:26
Chris Prime
You know, it's not like Aya Newt, you know, the blood of a turtle, like all these kind of like witchcraftian things that you hear from pagan things. Instead, it's like, it's the fat of like a unbaptized boy.
00:58:39
Chris Prime
you're like, oh, that's the only like recipe we saw.
00:58:44
Zach Sheets
Yeah, if you...
00:58:46
Chris Prime
And then the rest is just bad credit card fraud.
00:58:49
Zach Sheets
a
00:58:51
Chris Prime
I mean, this was
00:58:51
Zach Sheets
yeah if you If you want see like like a fun twist Terminator, like a supernatural Terminator, like but you can get that from this movie.
00:59:11
Chris Prime
Because
00:59:14
Zach Sheets
I wonder...
00:59:14
Chris Prime
on paper, it does sound good up until a certain point. Then it's, like, just silly.
00:59:20
Zach Sheets
i I'm just curious quick quick what the budget was of like the original Terminator compared to this movie.
00:59:24
Chris Prime
The original Terminator was, like, 10 million?
00:59:27
Zach Sheets
It hit like half the budget.
00:59:29
Chris Prime
did it.
00:59:30
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:59:30
Chris Prime
How much was the Terminator movie?
00:59:33
Zach Sheets
6.4 million was budget and then Warlock was 15 million.
00:59:36
Chris Prime
Holy shit. This does not look like $15 million dollars went into this.
00:59:39
Zach Sheets
No, it doesn't.
00:59:41
Chris Prime
Like, there's a lot of shots, like, indoors. There's just way too much, like, road trip moments that, like, you don't need a license to film in a car. They were basically at, like, a farm that I don't know. That's like the second half of the movie. Like a farm and a train yard.
01:00:01
Zach Sheets
Yep. Just like places they they like easily find.
01:00:06
Chris Prime
And then, i don't know, like... I know the special effects back then probably were super costly because they had to hand animate it.
01:00:14
Zach Sheets
listen
01:00:15
Chris Prime
and Some parts look like a Disney movie, like... like a Disney TV original movie, like effects where it's like, all right they just had animators. So it's like, okay, animate this effect by hand.
01:00:28
Zach Sheets
Oh, all the orange like ectoplasm blasts that he does are like just like so cartoony and cheesy.
01:00:35
Zach Sheets
Especially the first time when he like when first gets them, he's like bouncing it back and forth with his hands. It's like, oh my, I have this magical power now.
01:00:42
Chris Prime
Oh yeah. I'm thinking like, this is, this like a year or two after Labyrinth?
01:00:51
Zach Sheets
I mean, Labyrinth was like, what, like middle 86.
01:00:53
Chris Prime
eating 80?
01:00:54
Chris Prime
Wow.
01:00:56
Zach Sheets
five years before this.
01:00:57
Chris Prime
Okay, so they kind of want it because the the the Julian Sands sort of does have that David Bowie like like kind of acting where he's doing like tricks, I guess, and just sort of like you know playfully talking to things.
01:01:14
Zach Sheets
Yeah, trying like trying to be charming before he like, you know, bites their tongue off or something. Yeah.
01:01:18
Chris Prime
Yeah. It's the charming villainy that I think does stand out. Like, if you're a fan Julian Sands, yeah, definitely watch this movie. But if you suspect, like, kind of like a thriller, it is not a thriller. Even though, like, the the poster might look like it. It's like an action thriller or horror.
01:01:40
Chris Prime
It's, like, barely horror. Only, like, three scenes where you see blood.
01:01:48
Zach Sheets
You know what's even crazy too is like the same year this movie came out in the US was the year Terminator 2 came out. so
01:01:54
Chris Prime
Whoa.
01:01:54
Zach Sheets
so it's just like this like schlocky low budget Terminator ripoff against you know the ultimate Terminator like action like actual blockbuster.
01:02:07
Chris Prime
that's That's so funny.
01:02:08
Zach Sheets
That like that pushes like special effects to like new like new levels. Yeah.
01:02:11
Chris Prime
Yeah, yeah. And it's like, this is just, this I think like the special effects like hander the hell out of this movie.
01:02:23
Zach Sheets
But yeah, it's still pretty fun. You can watch it. It's on it's on Prime Video, I believe. is That's where I watched it.
01:02:28
Chris Prime
I watched it on Tubi.
01:02:30
Zach Sheets
I'm sure, this i feel like this is one of those movies where it's just like, oh, it's it's everywhere. It's on Pluto and Tubi and Prime and wherever else you want to go look for it.
01:02:43
