This week on the Everything Actioncast, Zach and Chris head to the end of the rainbow and 1993's horror/comedy cult classic, Leprechaun, as we just celebrated St. Patrick's Day, and the movie has gotten a new 4K (and VHS!) release from Lionsgate Limited.

In one of his defining roles, Warwick Davis stars as The Leprechaun, a malevolent supernatural being who is obsessed with his gold coins, killing anyone who comes into possession of them.  When teenager Tory (Jennifer Anniston) arrives to spend the summer at her father's new country farmhouse, dim-witted contractor Ozzie Jones (Mark Holton) accidentally releases The Leprechaun from his capture in the farmhouse's basement, and he goes on a rampage to get his coins back, which Ozzie and 10-year-old Alex (Robert Hy Gorman) found nearby.  Zach and Chris discuss The Leprechaun's various forms of transportation, the rules of the bag of gold coins, death by pogo stick, Jennifer Anniston basically playing Rachel, and more.

You can watch Leprechaun on Peacock.  Next week, we're discovering the Secret of the Ooze and discussing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II for its 35th anniversary.  If you are heading to PAX East in Boston next week and want more TMNT, be sure to check out our panel on the history of TMNT games at 5 PM EST in the Dragonfly Theater.

00:00:19
Zach Sheets
Hello and welcome to the Everything Action Cast podcast week of March 16th, 2026. I'm your host, Zach.
00:00:25
Chris Prime
our co-host chris
00:00:27
Zach Sheets
And this week we're following the rainbow and talking about Leprechaun because we just you know we just celebrated St. Patrick's Day, if you're hearing this. It was early this week. And also this week we got a new 4K release of Leprechaun along with a collector's VHS from Lionsgate Limited, which is kind of it's like Lionsgate has their own kind of boutique 4K slash VHS releasing label.
00:00:56
Zach Sheets
guess I guess they saw like what what Arrow and Vinegar Syndrome are doing. They wanted some of that like officially for themselves.
00:01:03
Chris Prime
But instead of, like, a secret release, it's just like, okay, we're gonna find the last VHS factory and then turn that back on.

Nostalgia and Collecting VHS

00:01:13
Zach Sheets
i think I think the Substitute also got a 4K release this week from Lionsgate Limited.
00:01:21
Chris Prime
Interesting.
00:01:21
Zach Sheets
Like that the Tom Barringer movie.
00:01:23
Chris Prime
You know, it's it's not like there's a...
00:01:24
Zach Sheets
movie
00:01:25
Chris Prime
I know there's a big push for more VHS stuff just because it's, like, the look and feels getting more into, like, collector prizes, but they haven't made a new VHS player in a long time.
00:01:37
Chris Prime
Like, I i wish they, like...
00:01:39
Zach Sheets
Yeah, where would you even get one?
00:01:40
Chris Prime
i mean, you gotta know someone who Yeah, I just, like, if they just made another VHS thing, like a new one, I would get one for, like, just to get one now.
00:01:51
Zach Sheets
a VHS, like I'm a VHS, like 4K player.
00:01:54
Chris Prime
Blu-ray DVD player? Yeah! That makes sense.
00:01:57
Zach Sheets
The two extremes.
00:02:00
Chris Prime
And just, like... I don't know, throwing a Betamax in it too. How much more money would it cost for an extra slot?

Warwick Davis and Jennifer Aniston's Roles

00:02:09
Zach Sheets
But yeah, so Leprechaun, the 1993 cult classic that spawned you know a pretty pretty big franchise of horror comedies. And was trying to figure out, would you say this is work, Dave?
00:02:22
Zach Sheets
like Is this like his defining role, Chris? or
00:02:26
Chris Prime
Hmm.
00:02:27
Zach Sheets
so i was thinking it's like it's Willow, this... I mean, if you're a Star Wars fan, probably Wicket. And then
00:02:35
Chris Prime
I mean, honestly, the like that, like Warwick Davis TV show is more of his. refin
00:02:40
Zach Sheets
Life's Too Short, yeah.
00:02:41
Chris Prime
Yeah, that to me is like more of a personal experience of things. And then, you know, he's like a great actor. So I kind of feel like this was his like he's done sci fi movies.
00:02:50
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:02:56
Chris Prime
So why not just do like a horror movie? That kind of like versatility.
00:03:01
Zach Sheets
And this i mean this is i this is like hit yo this is his franchise. He's the star of this franchise.
00:03:06
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:03:06
Zach Sheets
hes like lot lot lot things like he has like i he's Outside of Willow, like he's like you know kind of just like a supporting character in a bunch of stuff. But yeah, like this is like this like he's the you know the driving force behind these movies.
00:03:22
Zach Sheets
and And also, I mean, but then the first one also is like, you know, famous because it's the the first film role for Jennifer Aniston.
00:03:30
Chris Prime
who just pretty much figured out this type character and has been this character for so long.
00:03:35
Zach Sheets
i think i think it was a year later she was on Friends. Like Friends started a year later.
00:03:41
Chris Prime
1994? Really?
00:03:41
Zach Sheets
Yeah. she's playing She's playing a teenager, quote unquote. You know, i think she's like 23 in this movie. Yeah.
00:03:51
Chris Prime
and She doesn't act like a teenager. She just acts like Jennifer Anderson.
00:03:55
Zach Sheets
Like, yeah, like a
00:03:59
Zach Sheets
like, it's like, yeah, spoiled. Like, i why am I, like, not in Los Angeles?
00:04:03
Chris Prime
LA, yeah. she's trying to play you like a yeah well She's trying to be like a debutante sort of valley girl.
00:04:05
Zach Sheets
Complaining about dirt and...
00:04:10
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:04:11
Chris Prime
But it's weird because doesn't seem like her father ever was that. like Her family doesn't seem like that. like it's It's sort of something she picked up on her own.
00:04:21
Zach Sheets
she i mean Does she live in Los Angeles or she just wanted to visit Los Angeles? I feel like she like lives in Los Angeles, but then she got forced to go visit her father for the summer in North Dakota.
00:04:31
Chris Prime
I think that's kind of what it is. They never explore it. I'm actually surprised the movie keeps it on restraint. It doesn't explain that like the mom died or, you know, she only sees her dad seasonal or something.
00:04:44
Zach Sheets
And then, yeah, and he bought this dilapidated like farmhouse in North Dakota. And it's like, hey, come spend the summer with me and we'll fix up this farmhouse that I bought.
00:04:55
Zach Sheets
Where yeah a horrible accident occurred.
00:04:59
Chris Prime
Yeah, well, that like they were counting down the moments that they can just sort of excuse the dad character.
00:05:09
Zach Sheets
That guy must have had a scheduling conflict or something. He gets thrown out of the movie. By the first act, he's like, oh, he's in the hospital. doesn't show up again until the end. It's It's like, we gotta get him out of here.

Leprechaun Lore and Characteristics

00:05:25
Zach Sheets
But yeah, but before he moves in, we should probably talk about the opening, where he got Dan O'Grady... played by shay duffin who's like the most stereotypical irishman ever on film he's like he drank a whole bottle of whiskey he he caught a leprechaun or he he he got leprechaun gold it's and then i guess he went to ireland to bury it like to like his mother died in ireland and he went there and then found leprechaun's gold and then it came back to
00:05:56
Chris Prime
I mean, he seems like he did more than find the gold, right? He found, like, the clover. he found, like, sort of, like, but the leprechauns are real. Like,
00:06:09
Zach Sheets
He knows all the... One the things I like, especially this first one, is all the lore they drop for leprechaun things. Yeah, it's like four-year clovers. He has to polish shoes. If you throw shoes at him, he has to polish them. He's compelled to do it.
00:06:25
Chris Prime
Wait, does he do that in the first part of the movie?
00:06:27
Zach Sheets
Not in the first part of the movie, but I think this first movie is only movie I feel like he does that, because they kind drop that for the rest of the series. People don't use shoes against him, I don't think, for rest the movies.
00:06:38
Zach Sheets
But, Yeah, so Daniel Grady has the gold, but then the leprechaun tracks him all the way down, all the way to America, and,
00:06:48
Zach Sheets
Yeah, and...
00:06:48
Chris Prime
Well, he sneaks aboard. I think you're you're missing that. In the beginning, somehow the leprechaun smuggled himself in the luggage.
00:06:57
Zach Sheets
Oh, yeah! Yeah!
00:06:59
Chris Prime
So it wasn't like another scene. It literally was just like all this happens in one evening.
00:07:04
Zach Sheets
Because ga cause he he does one of his favorite favorite tricks, which is that he like does other people's voices to make it seem like it's like someone else is in the room.
00:07:04
Chris Prime
And
00:07:12
Zach Sheets
He's even like...
00:07:12
Chris Prime
Which, so, wait, so this this whole, like, ten minute sequence really sets up a lot of the the rules about getting to know the leprechaun, getting to know, like, his weaknesses, getting to know, like, his antics.
00:07:26
Chris Prime
Like, it it established it really quick, you know? Like, some some horror movies, when they introduce the villain, it's like one quick kill, then you kind of figure out as, like, the protagonist does.
00:07:29
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:07:36
Chris Prime
But, in this one, they're pretty straightforward. Like, they're This is what what the leprechaun's all about. This is how Irish-y is. and yeah, this four-leaf clover's gonna come back later. Because I kind of forgot that's his, like, big thing, because they sort of stopped that later on.
00:07:56
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I don't think that's really his weakness in the other movies. That's like his kryptonite. If you hold a four-leaf clover up to him in this movie, he's just like, oh no, a four-leaf clover, don't touch me with it.
00:08:07
Zach Sheets
And that
00:08:07
Chris Prime
And...
00:08:08
Chris Prime
If I remember correctly, like four leaf clovers are not common, but they're not super rare.
00:08:15
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I mean, if you go into like a clover field, I'm sure you can find... yeah Eventually you'll find one. I'm sure it's not like one in a billion is four-leaf clover.
00:08:20
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:08:26
Chris Prime
don't know. I always thought four leaf clovers were like really rare. And then it's like after a while you start seeing them and you're like, what the hell? That's like a kid thing.
00:08:35
Zach Sheets
But yeah, but like the magical power of the the Clover is enough. like If it's just like sitting on a box, then the leprechaun can't get out of the box.
00:08:44
Zach Sheets
that like It like has so much power over him that it holds him in place for 10 years.
00:08:51
Zach Sheets
But he does manage to kill downgrade wife by tricking her and tripping her down the stairs. I do like i i like the scene where like Dan goes down in the basement and the leprechaun is almost like using like his wife as a ventriloquist dummy.
00:09:07
Zach Sheets
like using Using her voice.
00:09:09
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:09:11
Zach Sheets
The leprechaun has like a lot of fun. like He's like very gleeful about his like it's like mischievous murders. he's like He gets like super psyched about things.
00:09:21
Chris Prime
Well, that's what I'm like. He kind of takes pleasure in it, but there's this weird thing where he's talking out loud to no one.
00:09:28
Zach Sheets
okay
00:09:29
Chris Prime
So it just like he's his own audience.
00:09:33
Zach Sheets
Also, also on this one, especially take a shot every time he says, where's my gold? Or where where's my gold?
00:09:39
Chris Prime
Oh, God, you're blacked out.
00:09:43
Zach Sheets
I i kept flashing back to that classic like Mobile Alabama leprechaun thing too. i want to know where the gold at. They're like the just the rap version of it.
00:09:56
Chris Prime
I haven't seen that one in a long time.
00:09:57
Zach Sheets
Give me the gold. Give me the gold.
00:10:05
Zach Sheets
Well, I mean, was was it, is it, i mean, back to the, I think it's the first to the hood, like ends with like a rap song.
00:10:11
Chris Prime
but it doesn't end with like a meme. like it If it was... In modern story writing, that joke would show up later in the movie as a nod to the audience who like understood it, but they haven't figured out how to do that.
00:10:26
Zach Sheets
i think I think the main series is probably mostly done by a time that video came out.
00:10:33
Chris Prime
Back to the Hood would have been... 2004? two thousand and four
00:10:37
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:10:38
Chris Prime
So it was like at least the last one that Warwick David was in.
00:10:42
Chris Prime
But anyway, back to the original, the one that started it all, which it's weird because Jennifer Anderson became the face of the franchise for like a little bit, even though she's in this one movie.
00:10:53
Zach Sheets
Well, especially the like the the next year, after like Friends blew up, they're like leprechaant star jenifer aniston hey were and Warwick Davis.
00:11:03
Chris Prime
And I think I own the DVD of like her on the cover, even though I think that was like definitely a cash-in. Because the original cover, of to get people like enticed for the movie, it's just like a leprechaun opening a door.
00:11:11
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:11:19
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:11:20
Chris Prime
Very simple. It's just like void of anything, but the leprechaun and the green light. And you see like his face, how it's not like the like perfect skin, rosy-cheeked leprechaun. like These leprechauns are basically warlocks.
00:11:36
Chris Prime
Or what you think like a troll would look like.
00:11:37
Zach Sheets
Yeah. hey
00:11:40
Chris Prime
I always remember that a kid, it was horrifying. like Catching this on TV and just like not understanding anything.
00:11:47
Zach Sheets
That's not lucky.
00:11:51
Chris Prime
Yeah, like, as with most people, everyone's first encounter with like, a leprechaun is usually, like, Lucky Charms. And then, you know, you see this movie and you're like, what the hell?
00:12:06
Zach Sheets
They're like they're're like murderous monsters.
00:12:09
Chris Prime
Oh, they are upset.
00:12:12
Zach Sheets
Well, if you take his gold, he's upset. like i don't If they if they just get like if you just give him all 100 of his coins back, i I guess he just leaves because he's he got his gold back.
00:12:23
Zach Sheets
I guess he is eases also just like killing other random people that aren't involved with the gold at all. Like like police and pawn shop owners and...
00:12:28
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:12:31
Chris Prime
It's sort of like if you just meet him, he's mad and he can kill you. Where I think in the other movies, they kind of tone that down where you have to like either trick, try to trick him or you need it.
00:12:44
Chris Prime
He, you, you have something he wants, but for this, for like the midpoint of the movie, it's literally just the leprechaun, like you over there and like murder.
00:12:48
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:12:58
Chris Prime
Though, when we get into the coin collector part, I want to go into that because that could have been like a different scene altogether.
00:13:07
Chris Prime
But let's establish who like Jennifer Anderson meets and sort of like her changing moment where she's a girl of the 90s, you know?
00:13:16
Zach Sheets
yeah this is in the super cut of characters saying it's the it's like it's the 90s now but yeah like we said like she she's we're assuming from Los Angeles and she's like stuck in North Dakota now with her father for the summer And then her dad's trying to fix up this this farmhouse.
00:13:35
Zach Sheets
And he's hired three guys who paint. It's the name of the company.
00:13:43
Chris Prime
Simple, effective, straight to the point.
00:13:46
Zach Sheets
in like in like ninety s sitcom font. it looks like it's like It looks like the title for like a sitcom. Like the font they use in their truck.
00:13:55
Zach Sheets
But it's it's it's nate it's Nate Murphy... And his 10-year-old brother, Alex, and then their friend, Ozzy. Ozzy's played by Mark Holton, who was in a bunch of movies. Probably most famously, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, as Francis.
00:14:12
Zach Sheets
Also in Teen Wolf.
00:14:14
Chris Prime
Was he the bully in Teen Wolf or was he like a teammate in Teen Wolf?

Character Dynamics and Magical Elements

00:14:18
Zach Sheets
i think he I think he was like but their teammate that they called like Chubby or Fatty or whatever his name was.
00:14:24
Chris Prime
It kind of makes sense. he It's that like classic 80s like his character is what you look like. There's no depth. And especially for here, they doubled down on that.
00:14:35
Zach Sheets
Yeah, he's quote-unquote slow. There's what they would say in this movie.
00:14:42
Chris Prime
It's so weird because there is a touching moment in the middle where it's like, oh, like, Alex wants to wish for, like, or he wants to afford brain surgery. And it's like, oh, no, we are. This movie can't be that clever to get into that.
00:14:57
Zach Sheets
He just has to take the crayon out of his brain. Homer Simpson style.
00:15:02
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:15:03
Chris Prime
But I'm surprised the leprechaun didn't do anything to, like, mess with Ozzy. Like, more, like kind of make his hallucinations real, like his his imagination run wild.
00:15:17
Chris Prime
We don't really get that.
00:15:19
Zach Sheets
Yeah, because Ozzy believes in pretty much everything, like aliens, you know, probably Bigfoot, probably all all kinds of monsters, and then leprechauns. and So when he gets like proof there's an actual leprechaun, he's just like all about, like, it's a real leprechaun. He's just telling everyone, like, calling the police and telling them it was leprechaun.
00:15:38
Chris Prime
but I get it. He's excited. like He's finally got one right.
00:15:40
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:15:42
Chris Prime
But it's not even like no one believes him and he's the only one who sees a leprechaun for a while. You know what I mean? like It didn't do that. Where like he should have been the first one who sees leprechaun, which I think he does in the like after the 10-year difference from the beginning.
00:15:59
Zach Sheets
Yeah, because because they all they show up to paint the house, and then they you know they meet Jennifer Aniston, and then he gets lured into the basement by the leprechaun, because the leprechaun's doing it like his, you know I think he's doing like a kid voice or something that he does a lot, and then kind of lures Ozzy down to the basement, and then like he like bumbles into the crate and knocks the clover off the crate, and then the leprechaun is able to get himself free from the crate now, because the clover's gone.
00:16:23
Zach Sheets
Which, 10 years, you you think that the the like the Clover would, like, run away to nothing for after 10 years, but it's it's still there.
00:16:30
Chris Prime
Maybe it's super magical. See what I mean? Like, i i don't know if that's something that you can, like, say in the movie where it's, like, blessed.
00:16:42
Chris Prime
it I think it's just, like, Dan O'Grady just picked one from Ireland. It was just like, yep, I've got my lucky clover.
00:16:50
Zach Sheets
Well, when it comes back later, when they pick up four-leaf clover, it kind of like flashes green. So like, I guess every four-leaf clover is like magical. Or if they's maybe the maybe just that patch is magical. I don't know.
00:17:01
Chris Prime
No idea. I thought would be something where like maybe the coin leeched into the ground and it made it magical. Because Because I don't think I know the whole purpose was the the coins that they got, but do they even tell you where the coins went besides the one?
00:17:20
Zach Sheets
Well, it's, it's, yeah, the coins are kind weird because the leprechaun, I guess, doesn't have, he doesn't have any control over when they, like, he's not making them appear the the rainbow. Like, they just appear at the end of the rainbow.
00:17:31
Zach Sheets
But then if someone finds them, then he's like, oh, I i want my cold my gold back.
00:17:36
Chris Prime
Well, no, see, I guess, like...
00:17:37
Zach Sheets
But he he't he he can't go and, like, go to the rainbow and, like, oh, here's my coins, I got them back. Like,
00:17:42
Chris Prime
Yeah, like, it adds too much complication because it's implied that every rainbow leads to a pot of gold. Maybe not to his pot of gold, but, like, a pot of gold.
00:17:54
Zach Sheets
I think i think he also at one point says like he sold his soul to to get the gold.
00:18:00
Chris Prime
The leprechaun?
00:18:00
Zach Sheets
Leprechaun does. but it's It's one of his like, i sold me soul from the gold, now I'm going to take your life to get it back or something. That's what he says.
00:18:08
Chris Prime
Oh, we're going to forgot to mention that this also had a lot of weird rhymes.
00:18:13
Zach Sheets
yeah that's part of Leprechaun's thing too, yeah.
00:18:15
Chris Prime
But I don't know if leprechauns really rhymed like that back in the day.
00:18:15
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:18:21
Chris Prime
It's something that I did have a chance when I went to Ireland to go to a leprechaun museum because it's what tourists do. And I decided against it. It's like, eh.
00:18:31
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:18:32
Chris Prime
Well, I also missed out because the... this particular Dublin leprechaun museum, it had, like a family friendly version that they did most of the days.
00:18:43
Chris Prime
And then like Saturday nights or Saturday evenings, they played, they did like the dark ones where it's like, here are more messed up, like dark leprechaun.
00:18:52
Zach Sheets
The real version.
00:18:53
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:18:53
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:18:53
Chris Prime
Like things were like, they would steal your underwear in your bed or like, how do you think they're, they reproduce? Like they just like crash into people's bedrooms and just said, Hey, this is happening. So,
00:19:05
Chris Prime
No, it's like a weird, messed up lore. And like, again, they aren't real. So there's someone someone just makes up tales.
00:19:12
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:19:13
Chris Prime
And then you get this movie version, which they kind of like have to assume that you know what a leprechaun is. Like they don't explain it. You know, like if someone who's never heard of leprechauns somehow like sees this movie, they really don't get like what is like the fun, factual stuff that people think are facts.
00:19:32
Chris Prime
And then the like made up stuff.
00:19:35
Zach Sheets
Yeah, because it's not like it's not like a vampire where like, like you know, it's like we gotta get steaks, we gotta get garlic. It's kind of just like, i don't know, what do you do with leprechaun? I don't know, a four-day clover?
00:19:47
Chris Prime
Technically, it's like you need iron. It's like a generic European, UK folklore thing. like a lot of things can't touch pure iron.
00:19:58
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:20:00
Chris Prime
Then you need fire. But fire is everyone's weakness for a while. you know i mean like It's not like super rare.
00:20:04
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:20:08
Chris Prime
I'm surprised they didn't do something where they countered like another mythical monster.
00:20:14
Chris Prime
It's like, okay, what's like what's the weakness against a leprechaun? Nessie? Like a Loch Ness monster?
00:20:21
Zach Sheets
Or they could have found like an old book or something in Daniel Gray's attic or something and be like, oh, here's is his book. but This is where like he learned all about leprechauns.
00:20:30
Chris Prime
Oh, actually, that's pretty clever.
00:20:31
Zach Sheets
Because like they needed to be like, oh, this is where he knew about like the Frohly Clover, and this is like where like all like the all all the like superstitions and lore about the Leprechaun, so we can use this to stop him.
00:20:43
Chris Prime
Well, okay, to be honest, because this movie takes place in North Dakota, they really don't use any North Dakota lore against Leprechaun. It have been interesting to have more Native American stuff happen, because that's also very like big there.
00:21:01
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:21:02
Chris Prime
And it's like, alright, what's the equivalent of what we can do for a Leprechaun using Native American stuff? I think that would have been clever. But that's just my personal preference. I know it's not going to do well because it doesn't do well at all on the franchise.
00:21:18
Chris Prime
But. Yeah, like, it's funny because then every one of the characters they introduce are just generic white people. Besides Ozzy being the like special needs character, you you have not Kevin Bacon.
00:21:35
Zach Sheets
yeah yeahp nate yeah
00:21:37
Chris Prime
the hot, like, handyman who is just... I don't know how old he is. If Jennifer Aniston's supposed to be, like, a teen, how how old is Nate?
00:21:45
Zach Sheets
A teenager, yeah.
00:21:49
Zach Sheets
Maybe just out of high school, or...
00:21:52
Chris Prime
And then, because, like, Nate and Alex are brothers, but it's, like, two different age ranges.
00:21:56
Zach Sheets
A huge gap, yeah. and I would say at least at least a 10-year gap, wouldn't you say?
00:22:02
Chris Prime
At least, right?
00:22:02
Zach Sheets
Alex is 10...
00:22:05
Chris Prime
Alex is supposed to 10?
00:22:06
Zach Sheets
but Yeah, Alex is 10.
00:22:09
Chris Prime
He has some weird dialogue for a 10 year old.
00:22:12
Zach Sheets
Well, he's he's in that, like, I feel like in that of this era, there was like a lot of like, you know, snarky little brothers that like were like way talking way more older than they like should should be.
00:22:22
Chris Prime
Should be. Well, that and like Alex is just dressed like Dennis the Menace.
00:22:28
Zach Sheets
I thought i thought you dressed like he was cosplaying as Ness from Earthbound. He's got like the like right and red and yellow striped shirt and everything in the baseball cap.
00:22:38
Chris Prime
Well, you know what's funny? there So that striped shirt, Dennis the Menace has like the red and black one, but it's another striped shirt that I think the European version of that like other kind of Dennis the Menace character that like at the same time has Dennis the Menace, someone in the UK invented their version of it.
00:22:44
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:22:56
Zach Sheets
Yep.
00:22:57
Chris Prime
I forget what the phenomenon's called, but it's just like two different people had the same idea, but then they made it and then they just said like, oh crap, like that exists?
00:23:07
Zach Sheets
with With no knowledge of the other one.
00:23:09
Chris Prime
Yep. It's like, honestly, like a very like, okay, well, like everyone loves bad kids.
00:23:18
Chris Prime
But Alex isn't that bad. He just he just sort of like talks older than he should. And then he has an idea about like gun violence that is just comes out of nowhere.
00:23:30
Zach Sheets
but yeah, very dark.
00:23:33
Chris Prime
But also, I say that Dennis the Menace thing because he has a slingshot he doesn't use until like the MacGuffin of the movie.
00:23:38
Zach Sheets
Chekhov's slingshot.
00:23:40
Chris Prime
Yep. What does he use it at all in the beginning or anything?
00:23:43
Zach Sheets
think he just shoots like little spitball or something Ozzy in the beginning. Just to show that he's like a good shot with a slingshot.
00:23:52
Chris Prime
OK, I kind of forgot that then.
00:23:54
Zach Sheets
Also, also we gotta mention like their paint job is awful on this house. They're painting it bright blue and like the shutters are bright red.
00:24:06
Chris Prime
They're painting Pee-wee's house. Pee-wee's country house, basically.
00:24:08
Zach Sheets
Yeah, who
00:24:10
Chris Prime
i was going to say, like is it one of those things where it looks like they used a gallon of paint on one wall? like They just sort of like smeared it? cause That was back when paint didn't have built-in primer.
00:24:23
Zach Sheets
yeah I mean, i feel like they they paint those shutters red and then it's like, well, we got to open a new can of red. Let me go get that. It's like was like one window.
00:24:31
Chris Prime
Yeah, they're just jacking up the rate For the dad. Also, for the dad who just moved in, it seemed like he never bought, he never been in that house. Like, it's another cliche thing where the parental figure just buys a place it's like, they've never been there before.
00:24:47
Chris Prime
They're just like, mm-hmm.
00:24:47
Zach Sheets
but Yeah, you you buy it sight unseen because it's so cheap. You're just like, I got a great deal on it.
00:24:52
Chris Prime
Oh, it'd be silly not to, like, buy it right now here for whatever asking price this is.
00:24:58
Zach Sheets
Yeah, and it's it's so much like dust filled and spider webs everywhere. It's like, yeah, no one's been in here for like 10 years. Yeah.
00:25:04
Chris Prime
It's like, is this house up to code? Also, wasn't there a fire here that, like, was, got like, happened?
00:25:11
Zach Sheets
It was going to, but then Daniel Grady had a stroke. We we we we learned later. Because he wanted to set the leprechaun on fire with like the gasoline. But then the leprechaun's like, you can't do that. I'm to make you not do that.
00:25:22
Zach Sheets
You're not feeling very well, are you, Danny? And then you kind of like he collapsed before he could light the match.
00:25:29
Zach Sheets
So that's why the leprechaun was stuck in the basement for 10 years.
00:25:34
Chris Prime
I mean, that basement preserved that clover really well.
00:25:37
Zach Sheets
That's what we were saying earlier. yeah it's just like Would that just like run away?
00:25:42
Chris Prime
Eventually, it's not like encased.
00:25:43
Zach Sheets
Or not even or or like some sort of breeze or something would like blow it off. it's it's that It's not like it's nailed on or stuck on the box. It's just like laying it literally on top laying on top of the box free. There could have just been a like so like a slight breeze that would blow the clover
00:26:01
Zach Sheets
But but there' is there's a rainbow, and then Ozzy and Alex go, and they and they find the gold, and they decide to keep it for themselves keep it a secret for themselves. But then that obviously makes him the target of the Leprechaun, because now he wants his gold back.
00:26:17
Chris Prime
Well, he sensed that but they have his coin.
00:26:20
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:26:22
Chris Prime
And for whatever reason, I think, what, Ozzy swallowed the coin already?
00:26:27
Zach Sheets
he was He was trying to do the the the like thing you do in a movie where you bite it to see if it's real gold, but he somehow ate the whole thing.
00:26:34
Chris Prime
And then Leprechaun was like, okay, I want all my gold. Like, he can sense it. in he Actually, I don't think he knows it's in Ozzy yet.
00:26:41
Zach Sheets
No, he there's 100 pieces and he wants all 100 pieces back. At one point, he count like literally counts them all when he gets like the the entire bag back. He's like, there's one missing.
00:26:53
Zach Sheets
i I need my gold back.
00:26:56
Zach Sheets
but they But they hide it in the... like There's a well on the farmhouse property, so they hide it like in like the bucket of the well.
00:27:03
Chris Prime
That explains where they hit it. Because was like, I think they just found it in like a car.
00:27:07
Zach Sheets
There's an abandoned truck, yeah, like away from the the farmhouse that the rainbow ended at.
00:27:12
Chris Prime
Which had it yeah again, Dan got that stroke, but he never went back for the coins.
00:27:19
Zach Sheets
you Yeah, what... Because he had the bag and then it just disappeared and reappeared again. Like the coins themselves are, or the bag's magical. i mean, it it is magical obviously because it appears, but like...
00:27:33
Chris Prime
but it's like it's got sort of its own rules where if no one has the bag, and it it like teleports around the estate.
00:27:42
Zach Sheets
Or it just like, it appears like, like does it want does it want to like lure people in to take it? Or are the coins sentient? It's oh, there's people nearby. ill We'll make a rainbow and have the coins appear.
00:27:54
Chris Prime
I mean, it's not even that like rule set where, okay, only the purest heart can find the gold.
00:28:00
Zach Sheets
it's just like, it's like oh go, there's a rainbow. go go the end Go see where it ends and you'll get coins.
00:28:06
Zach Sheets
But like we were saying too, like but it seems like the Leprechaun can't actually go himself and get the coins. Because like he would like just go and get the coins. like They're at the end of the rainbow. like Just go get coins back. But he needs like someone else to go get them.
00:28:20
Zach Sheets
And then he can take them from... they or And they need to like give it back to him like willingly or something. There's a lot of like rules that are kind of just like vaguely or not explained.
00:28:31
Chris Prime
Yeah, i mean, it's definitely like looking further into this B-movie that basically became an overnight sensation just because it was like 1993 and everyone was sick of like the the unkillable human size, like a humanoid demon monster band, but never like a leprechaun size.
00:28:52
Zach Sheets
Well,
00:28:55
Chris Prime
and don't know, because everyone's used to like Jason and Freddy at this point, so... This is the era, like we mentioned, where like Wishmaster sort of became big and we're still like a few years off before like we get to human killers where like it's just a man in a mask.
00:28:59
Zach Sheets
well le
00:29:12
Chris Prime
So i bring it up because it definitely was like this should have been like a straight to like HBO movie, but it did well enough to be in theaters.
00:29:24
Zach Sheets
Yeah. It's it's great like like a met like massive success. like it was I think it cost under a million dollars to make and then it grossed like $9 million dollars to the box office.
00:29:35
Chris Prime
That's crazy. Because I feel like they filmed this in like a week. I mean, there's more effects of that, obviously. But and how many like things they do and how many like sets they use.
00:29:49
Chris Prime
It's very like economical.
00:29:51
Zach Sheets
Yeah, well, I mean, it's it's mostly it's mostly the the farmhouse, and then they go to they go to town for, like, a little bit, and then they come back.

Memorable Scenes and Leprechaun's Weaknesses

00:29:59
Chris Prime
Okay, so I bring up the coin collector earlier where the coin collector was just like a nice guy. he he wasn't like sinister. He wasn't like, okay, well, I'm to try to like swindle the money from the guys. He just was like, oh, cool. A coin. Let me like do more research. And then that's when the leprechaun's like, how dare you?
00:30:21
Zach Sheets
Yeah, well we got so leprechaun pretends to be a cat and lures Jennifer Aniston's dad over to like this like stump, and then he reaches his hand inside of it and gets bit by the leprechaun.
00:30:33
Zach Sheets
then he has to go to the hospital. Actually, we've read bunch earlier. like Earlier, he was under the truck. and He was like rubbing Jennifer Aniston's leg and then like scratched her So he's he's kind of just like fucking with them for a little bit. and then like Then he's like, oh, I'm going actually like horribly injure someone now.
00:30:52
Zach Sheets
I don't know. It wasn't really like like, like, it wasn't part of his, like, he wasn't trying to get his gold bag. it was kind of just like, I'm just gonna fuck with these people. Like, cause i'm a mischievous leprechaun.
00:31:00
Zach Sheets
But they have to go to town because they have to bring, uh, yeah, Tori, like, Jeff Francis' dad to the hospital. And that's when, like, Ozzy and Alex kind of sneak off and they go like, a pawn shop, I guess.
00:31:13
Zach Sheets
And then, yeah, the guy's like, alright, yeah, this coin's probably worth, like, $500. Yeah.
00:31:19
Zach Sheets
It's like, they have a hundred of them. They're rich.
00:31:22
Chris Prime
Okay, I did mention that the dad character sort of just like exits the movie, and we just...
00:31:26
Zach Sheets
but That's how to get him out there. Yeah, it's like the leprechaun fits his hands.
00:31:27
Chris Prime
Yeah, just... Never see him again.
00:31:33
Zach Sheets
And then, yeah, we and then probably, I mean, probably the best kill in the movie is when the leprechaun, when he and he's killing that pawn shop guy, he like takes a pogo stick and just like starts po like jumping out of the guy's chest and like killing him.
00:31:46
Chris Prime
Yeah, so... That's horrifying because like it's a recognizable kids thing and now it's like, oh, you could use it to murder this like person's face.
00:31:59
Chris Prime
I always remember that like scene stood out for me in in like the series because you don't really see such a horrifying like brutal beatdown by the leprechaun. Usually magic happens and it's like an irony death.
00:32:13
Chris Prime
But he didn't like beat the the guy down with like a sack of coins or anything. Yeah, they they didn't figure out the formula just yet to like, if you do this to leprechaun, he will like do the reverse on you.
00:32:30
Zach Sheets
Yeah, he's he's but he's a lot more hands-on and brutal in this one compared to the later ones where he's just like he's like using magic or doing like wck you know more wacky kills. don't know. bursting out of someone's body or something.
00:32:45
Chris Prime
Yeah, he he also like bites more people than you think. It's like he scratches and bites where it's like he's more feral.
00:32:54
Zach Sheets
Yeah, he actually uses his claws and his teeth in this one. They're like they're both super sharp, so it makes sense he would use them.
00:33:03
Zach Sheets
But i do I do love that he like he steals a goat cart from this pawn shop, and that's like one of likes like his main like transportation.
00:33:08
Chris Prime
Transportation.
00:33:09
Zach Sheets
Leprechaun uses so many different modes of transportation this movie. like he's He's got like a a tricycle, he's got the goat cart, he builds a second goat cart, like eight teams around the garage.
00:33:22
Chris Prime
Oh, I forgot. Yeah, yeah. He he sort of just assembles something, which is just, right, he can do just do that. Even though, if you think about it, he must have done that in Ireland before coming to America?
00:33:35
Zach Sheets
Are leprechauns like known for being like welders or like metal workers?
00:33:42
Chris Prime
No, they can't use that metal work.
00:33:43
Zach Sheets
chris cause he's it he's like he's like I think he specifically says like he's like a cobbler, or like a shoe like so he's all about shoes. you know But he somehow has like these like welding skills to make like an A-Team-style pitchfork go-kart weapon thing.
00:34:01
Zach Sheets
he's He just uses, like, to flip over a truck, and that's it. Then he, like, abandons that.
00:34:05
Chris Prime
Yeah, I thought there'd be more usage, but really just does like one use tools.
00:34:11
Zach Sheets
And then like then, like, a wheelchair later, which seems like a lot, like, a lot of effort to, like, wheelchair yourself from, like, all the way across town back to the farm.
00:34:20
Chris Prime
No idea. Like that that one was just more visually funny. And like. I kind of forgot that's where Dan O'Grady's been.
00:34:30
Zach Sheets
Yeah, which, which which add like, there's a whole, after they get back from town, like from town there's a whole big section year where it's just they're kind of like trying to fend off the leprechaun, like he's attacking them in the house.
00:34:41
Chris Prime
I mean, partly because he does like the teleport to the retirement or the to the nursing hospital.
00:34:49
Zach Sheets
before nursing home, I was talking about the whole whole like section where he's, like, you know, they're they're in the house and, like, trying to fight him off.
00:34:56
Chris Prime
Oh, that part.
00:34:56
Zach Sheets
like like Like, he's on, like, the skateboard and stuff.
00:34:57
Chris Prime
Okay.
00:35:00
Zach Sheets
And then, like, Nate gets, like, his leg caught in the bear trap.
00:35:04
Zach Sheets
Which I love. That's, like, one of my favorite parts where, like, he gets caught the bear trap and the left kind like, pops out and just, like, ha ha! He's so happy about it. He's just like, ha ha, got you! ha ha ha! He got caught in bear trap.
00:35:16
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's like he's very gleefully into...
00:35:18
Zach Sheets
It's like a prank show. It's like, yeah, it's like, I pranked you! he just got punked. like he's He's so hyped about it.
00:35:26
Chris Prime
Well, that's another scene where I always laugh because not only does he, like, bear trap Nathan. And then later when like everyone's gathering, he comes back to bite him on the same wound. Like it's, it's just like unnecessary. It doesn't serve any kind of like kill or like undeadly. It just like check out this like asshole monster that is like just taking its time to figure out what to do.
00:35:56
Zach Sheets
Yeah, definitely definitely toying with them and fucking with them. like he's like yeah he's doing like the whole like they have a they They found a shotgun in the house and then they're trying to shoot him, but he's like going back and forth on skateboard and like doing different poses and popping out of cabinets and popping out of the refrigerator and moving on like moving on under the basement and trying to figure out where he's going.
00:36:16
Chris Prime
Yeah, it becomes like the like jump scare scene where leprechaun just is more than a generic slasher villain, but he still follows the same tactics.
00:36:29
Chris Prime
It almost becomes like an evil dead like where it just like the whole the whole like outside is just like free domain for the leprechaun just to run around in.
00:36:42
Zach Sheets
Oh, I also... is's like There's a part where like Nathan gets the shotgun and he shoots the leprechaun outside. and it's like, oh, he's dead. like We got him. But then he shoots like six more times.
00:36:54
Zach Sheets
but It looks like he's shooting at nothing. Because you don't see the leprechaun's body. He's shot with like the shotgun shells. And he's just like, shot like six times. He's not that is is that dead
00:37:04
Chris Prime
Yeah, he just sprayed shotgun.
00:37:06
Zach Sheets
He's like wasted like a bunch of shells just shooting nothing.
00:37:10
Chris Prime
Yeah, that's how they get rid of the shotgun.
00:37:12
Zach Sheets
He's like, I got him. I got a bunch like a bunch of times you guys saw it, right?
00:37:16
Chris Prime
That counts.
00:37:20
Zach Sheets
And then, like we said, like he they try to get away in the truck. And then like there're their shitty truck is like has some sort of weird issue where it like never starts. But then Alex is like somehow like a a mechanical savant where he just like he'll like go and like fix the engine. which Basically, he just wiggles wires and it's like, oh, it started now.
00:37:39
Zach Sheets
But I think their jeep is... I think Tori's dad's jeep is still there at the house. they like So it's like... why That seems more reliable than like the the truck. like Take the jeep.
00:37:51
Chris Prime
I think she panicked and then they just ran into the first thing and technically the truck is like Nathan's
00:37:59
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:38:01
Zach Sheets
but she i mean she But she does take like the jeep later. like she When she's like, alright, everyone fend for yourselves. i have to go I'll go talk to the old man oh O'Grady.
00:38:11
Zach Sheets
And then... Yeah, so like... they they tell that I think they realized, like, oh... O'Grady figured out way to stop this leprechaun.
00:38:22
Zach Sheets
Trapped this leprechaun before, so we need to go talk to him. But he's at...
00:38:24
Chris Prime
Which, surprise return, O'Grady's still alive.
00:38:27
Zach Sheets
Somehow, yes. It seemed like he was definitely dead at the that opening scene, but it's like, oh no, he just like had a stroke and now he's in like a a nursing home.
00:38:35
Chris Prime
But they don't really bring that up until this moment. Because I get, Jennifer Aniston didn't question who owned the farm beforehand. The dad knew.
00:38:43
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:38:43
Chris Prime
Dad never mentioned anything. And then the three painter guys are just like, oh yeah, like, leprechauns are real. This is scary, right?
00:38:55
Chris Prime
I forgot who says it It's like, okay, we have to find out how, like, O'Grady did this. So that's why Jennifer Aniston has to go run off and do that.
00:38:59
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:39:03
Zach Sheets
Well, Jennifer Aniston is like is like also like extremely reluctant. to like sort like It takes her like so long to admit that it's like a leprechaun. She's like, it's not a leprechaun. It's something else, but it's not a leprechaun.
00:39:12
Chris Prime
Yeah, she's in really big denial.
00:39:15
Chris Prime
But then she sort of believes later.
00:39:17
Zach Sheets
yeah but she Yeah.
00:39:19
Chris Prime
mean, you have to. It's it's been like too much of crazy night not to believe.
00:39:24
Zach Sheets
But she goes to Grady's and then to in order like help her help her like get away from the leprechaun, the other guys start throwing shoes onto the yard because we find out that that's like the main... Along with Furly's flovers, that's like the leprechaun's main weakness is that he has to polish shoes. If you throw a shoe at him, he'll polish it.
00:39:45
Chris Prime
Which I don't know where the compulsion comes from.
00:39:48
Zach Sheets
well i like I like that scene where ransacks the kitchen, but then you like takes his time to polish everyone's shoes and put them on the table.
00:39:56
Chris Prime
You see that earlier with the coin collector where the coin collector is dead but the because his shoes are dirty, Leprechaun has a compulsion to clean the dead man's shoes.
00:40:09
Chris Prime
Again, really good setup for explaining certain things. It's just like... It doesn't become part of the series lore.
00:40:19
Chris Prime
it's like, oh yeah, this happens. Oh yeah, this. and Okay, like new rule now.
00:40:25
Zach Sheets
I think they probably realized it was it's so goofy to have be stopped by shoes. words You see at work, they were just running around just polishing shoes.
00:40:30
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:40:34
Zach Sheets
but i yeah But I guess he eventually does like finish polishing all the shoes and he he follows Jennifer Aniston the nursing home. because they because We get the great scene where Jennifer Aniston goes into a graze room and he's like talking to him and it turns out the leprechaun dressed like him.
00:40:50
Zach Sheets
He turns around like, I'm not going to tell you how to kill me.
00:40:53
Zach Sheets
And then...
00:40:54
Chris Prime
It is funny because like, it's obviously Warren, like it's obviously like a leprechaun in, in that like outfit, but, but Jennifer Aniston's sort like, okay, well, I guess maybe, you maybe Dan O'Britt is also like a so wee person.
00:41:01
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:41:05
Zach Sheets
He's really short.
00:41:10
Zach Sheets
And then that's what when we get the leprechaun. That's when he's in the wheelchair, like in the the whole like wheelchair chase. And then, like we he he wields the like he wheels his way all the way back to the farmhouse. He doesn't get like another vehicle. It's just like, I'm going to take this wheelchair all the way back across the town.
00:41:30
Zach Sheets
Which, I mean, luckily that gives like you know everyone like time to like try to find a four-way clover. He's decided to take the most inconvenient transportation back to the farmhouse.
00:41:42
Chris Prime
Yeah, it it's not like he could build another go-kart again. he could, but I think he just chooses to mess with them for plot reasons.
00:41:51
Zach Sheets
you see he still he had the go-kart he stole from the pawn shop too, like on the side of the road. because they like it's it's next like he well We didn't mention he he kills the cop, because the cop pulls him over and was in the go-kart. And the cop thinks he's like a kid in like a leprechaun costume.
00:42:05
Zach Sheets
And then like he like really kills the cop by just like digging his fingers through his face.
00:42:09
Chris Prime
And snaps his neck.
00:42:10
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:42:12
Chris Prime
Which, again, it's not like the cop slighted the leprechaun in a big way. It's just like, you. You looked at me funny.
00:42:19
Zach Sheets
You called me a kid. I'm 600 years old. Whatever he says. Yeah.
00:42:26
Zach Sheets
And then he does, he uses it later to like trick the cops. Cause like, like Ozzy tries to call the police and tells them it's leprechaun. They're like, oh, it's Ozzy again. He's like, he's making a call. But now it's a leprechaun this time.
00:42:38
Zach Sheets
But then Tori calls and then is like, oh, now we believe it. A girl's like, this this girl from California is calling us. Get out there.
00:42:48
Chris Prime
That makes sense. It's like, oh, this is a new person. We have to protect her New person.
00:42:53
Zach Sheets
But then the leprechaun answers the call as i asked the dead cop is like, i'll go yeah, i'll go I'll go check it out.
00:43:00
Zach Sheets
But then the get the gang has to find the the extremely convenient like for like clover patch next to the house. They have find a flurry clover in that.
00:43:08
Chris Prime
Well, I'm assuming for whatever reason, O'Grady's Planet Clovers.
00:43:16
Zach Sheets
Because they're Irish.
00:43:17
Chris Prime
I'm assuming it was a crazy Irish opening too of this movie.
00:43:21
Chris Prime
Like when we are first introduced to O'Grady he stumbles out with a bottle of Jameson that he just pounds.
00:43:28
Zach Sheets
that's why Yeah, pounded he pounded a whiskey. he's His super thick Irish accents. Yeah, he just came from Ireland. His wife is super Irish.
00:43:40
Chris Prime
So I'm not surprised that, you know, he's just like, I don't know, clovers, you want to plant clovers here? Even though there are farmers they're farmers, but i don't know what they're growing.
00:43:51
Zach Sheets
We go clovers.
00:43:53
Chris Prime
We will be the only in North da Dakota clover farmer.
00:43:53
Zach Sheets
It is...
00:43:57
Zach Sheets
This one like super barren like stretch. like like Everything's barren except this one stretch of clovers.
00:44:05
Zach Sheets
Clovers and potatoes. That's what they grow. They're looking
00:44:08
Chris Prime
It's the Sad as Lucky Charms mix.
00:44:13
Zach Sheets
but that but but yeah theyre sore looking for clover. And le the leprechaun comes back, and then Ozzy kind of tells everyone, like, oh, hey, I know, like, he's back, because they, before they gave him, like, his bag back, but then he counted them all, it's like, there's one missing. And so when it's in Ozzy's stomach, so then it's like, the leprechaun's back for that one.
00:44:33
Zach Sheets
And, so it's like, like, brutally attacking Ozzy, too. Like, just like, slashing his face, and like, like, like, yeah, it's like, really like, digging into him.
00:44:38
Chris Prime
Oh, yeah.
00:44:44
Chris Prime
It's pretty graphic because it's not like he's using a weapon. It's really just like clawing.
00:44:50
Zach Sheets
animalistic, like slashing him.
00:44:50
Chris Prime
Yeah, animalistic. That's like a good term. And it's no pun. You know, usually leprechaun has like a joke or anything, but this is really just like he's slashing at this child, basically.
00:45:06
Zach Sheets
I'm going to get my coin back.
00:45:08
Chris Prime
He doesn't slash at the stomach. He just goes for the head.
00:45:12
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I think he would like you know go right for the gut and start digging into his stomach or something trying to put that coin out, but...
00:45:19
Chris Prime
Yeah, he's just it's trying to go from head first.
00:45:22
Zach Sheets
but yeah yeah luckily But luckily they find a form of clover and then yeah Alex uses his slingshot skills and he he Alex has to drop like the iconic line of like... What is it? was it like and i want make sure this is... i get
00:45:37
Zach Sheets
like, uh, the Lucky Charms line.
00:45:41
Chris Prime
And he's like, go fuck he yourself, Lucky. something like that.
00:45:47
Zach Sheets
I think it's, I think it's like, go fuck yourself Lucky Charms or so something like that, but,
00:45:51
Chris Prime
But it's terrible product placement for General Mills, I think.
00:45:55
Zach Sheets
it's weird because like there was a box of cereal, but it wasn't Lucky Charms. like It was like Lucky Clovers. cause They could they could obviously couldn't use Lucky Charms in the movie.
00:46:05
Zach Sheets
there's like a fake box Lucky Charms. And Leprechaun eats it and is like, ugh.
00:46:12
Chris Prime
Yeah, the line is, fuck you, Lucky Charms.
00:46:15
Zach Sheets
Yes. Mm-hmm.
00:46:17
Zach Sheets
And then shoots the clover right down his throat. and then like but that like he he basically He basically turns like a gremlin. I remember a lot of like the gremlins dying. Especially like especially like Stripe in the first one.
00:46:26
Zach Sheets
where just he starts like melting.
00:46:26
Chris Prime
Oh, it's like the melting.
00:46:27
Chris Prime
And
00:46:28
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:46:31
Zach Sheets
It kind of turns like a melty black skeleton then it falls into the well.
00:46:36
Chris Prime
and then for added measure, they burn the well.
00:46:39
Zach Sheets
Yes. Well, he kind of bursts back out. like is It's like he's like still is this like a skeleton now, he's just like, I want my gold! And then, yeah, they kick him down the well and burn it and blow it up in a giant explosion.
00:46:53
Chris Prime
Where like, was there also like an oil pipe down there? What, they blow up the gas line in the house?
00:47:00
Zach Sheets
well nathan Nathan pours like like a can of gasoline down there, but i don't I don't know if that would make that big of explosion. like It's a huge explosion.
00:47:07
Chris Prime
It's also like a, like a magical being they set on fire, so who knows?
00:47:13
Zach Sheets
Yeah, as far as i as i say was it turned into a green fire or something, like something to be like, oh, this is the magic escaping him or something.
00:47:22
Chris Prime
Hmm, see? That's clever. Or, like, when they burn them, like, all these, like, spirits get released, or, like, rainbows shoot out.
00:47:35
Zach Sheets
out of the well, yeah.
00:47:37
Chris Prime
But it's a movie that doesn't ask much from the audience, so, like, it just can, like, feel satisfied. I mean, you don't know what happened to the dad. You don't know what the police are going to ask.
00:47:50
Chris Prime
They're probably going to wonder what happened to the dead sheriff or the deputy.
00:47:50
Zach Sheets
want
00:47:52
Zach Sheets
Well, I think you see the dad come at, like, he comes with the cops at the end and kind of, like, hugs Tori, but doesn't have any dialogue at the end. He's just like, oh, hey, I'm back in the movie.
00:48:02
Chris Prime
Yeah, I missed that.
00:48:03
Zach Sheets
And yeah, bunch cops show up. with yeah How do they how they can explain what happened? like, oh, this leprechaun was attacking us.
00:48:13
Chris Prime
Well, I mean, first they'd be like, do you believe in leprechauns?
00:48:13
Zach Sheets
but it
00:48:15
Chris Prime
Alright, this is going to make this conversation a lot easier.
00:48:15
Zach Sheets
Yeah. look at Look in the well. There's as like a skeleton in the well.
00:48:22
Chris Prime
have been funny if, like, they look in and there's just, like, nothing there. And it's like, okay, well, it's magic.
00:48:29
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:48:30
Chris Prime
It's sort of like, or, or, i know later on they make things with wishes. They wish for the leprechaun to go away. you know, it's sort of like the they it really I mean, that it's turned into like Wishmaster, but it like undoes the like meaning of the movie.
00:48:51
Zach Sheets
I don't know, like, in the second one, i don't know if they, like, explained him, like, like it's like, oh, he gets, how he regenerates, I think he just you just is back. or Or is it a different, like like, it's a different leprechaun.
00:49:05
Zach Sheets
But it's but's the same, like, you know, actor and character. i don't know. The second one, I don't think really, like, there's not, like, a a big, like, oh, this is how he regenerated the well when he's back now. i think he just, like, shows up again.
00:49:16
Zach Sheets
He's like, hey, I'm back. I'm looking for a wife.
00:49:18
Chris Prime
Yeah, pretty much. They don't really need to dive so much in the continuation because the series sort of jumps around and it's whatever.
00:49:29
Chris Prime
But that's what's like fun about the series. It doesn't take itself too serious. And then it's sort of like you need to know what a leprechaun is still. Like they never reintroduce. There's no like leprechaun hunter.
00:49:44
Chris Prime
that shows up and it's like, oh, I've been preparing my i was my family legacy to like fight like leprechauns.
00:49:49
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:49:53
Chris Prime
So they never get to that point.
00:49:55
Zach Sheets
I mean, yeah, he goes i mean he goes to space in like, like faster than like most other horror franchises. Like usually it's like the seventh or eighth movie in the franchise where it's like he goes to space, but this was like, oh, the fourth one, he's in space now.
00:50:09
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:50:11
Zach Sheets
He was, he was just Las Vegas, now he's in space.
00:50:14
Chris Prime
But
00:50:14
Zach Sheets
And then, and then he went to the hood twice after space.
00:50:17
Chris Prime
but that's unlike... Usually franchises don't survive the space one. The fact that the hood ones are... I like the hood one movies. So... I always enjoy like a horror franchise that can sort of jump different genres and things.
00:50:33
Zach Sheets
Yeah, space space is usually like, oh, we're desperate. this like We have nothing left. Let's just throw them in space.
00:50:41
Zach Sheets
But yeah, there's so' still like there's two two two more movies after that that one, and then the reboot, and then the direct sequel that came out a couple years ago. Like, god like almost 10 years now. but
00:50:54
Zach Sheets
Which I feel like, I don't think either of us has Leprechaun Returns, but I think we both kind of want to see it now. Especially because we learned that the director is Steven Kostansky, who directed, like, Psycho Goreman and the new Deathstalker movie.
00:51:07
Chris Prime
And he's sort of an unhinged visual auteur, so... Looking forward to this.
00:51:14
Zach Sheets
Although, I mean, Warwick Davis didn't come back for that one, but still so still interested. And i never i never saw, like, did you see the the reboot one, Chris?
00:51:26
Chris Prime
Origins? No.
00:51:26
Zach Sheets
Origins? Yeah.
00:51:28
Chris Prime
Didn't see it.
00:51:29
Zach Sheets
Because that was that was a that was a w WWE e Films one.
00:51:32
Chris Prime
i was Hogswoggle.
00:51:34
Zach Sheets
hot Or Swaggo was the, yeah.
00:51:36
Zach Sheets
they're're're They're trying to make it like, it's now it's an actual horror movie. It's darker. if people are just like, no, Leprechaun is not dark. he's He's doing rap songs and, you know, rhyming and killing people.
00:51:53
Chris Prime
Which was enough for the time.
00:51:56
Zach Sheets
yeah, definitely a fun franchise.

Franchise Evolution and Future Possibilities

00:51:58
Zach Sheets
the first And the first one is
00:52:00
Zach Sheets
you was It was a fun way to kick it off. I think these later movies kind of like figured out they kind of lean more the comedy character like territory.
00:52:10
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:52:10
Zach Sheets
That makes them more fun. i think Warwick Davis got to be dropping more one-liners doing more more crazy things.
00:52:18
Chris Prime
say, the you wouldn't see for the first movie being like a runaway success in a six-movie series.
00:52:28
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Yeah.
00:52:29
Chris Prime
You would not suspect that from this first movie.
00:52:33
Zach Sheets
And it's also just crazy that this is like Jennifer Aniston's like first movie.
00:52:36
Chris Prime
eh, you keep bringing that up, but I'm like, she's just Jennifer Aniston in this movie.
00:52:37
Zach Sheets
it' it
00:52:41
Chris Prime
It's not like there's like a unique acting style. She pretty much was, I'm going to pretend to be like a Californian and then boom.
00:52:49
Zach Sheets
Well, it's just, it's it's interesting that it's like she, she was in this and then she like immediately went to like the biggest thing ever. Because a lot of times, like you know everyone else who's like kind of in like these like horror movies to start with, like Leonardo DiCaprio or George Clooney or something, it takes them a little bit to like get to like their the first huge thing they're in. It's like, oh, I'm i'm in like this movie and then a bunch of other movies or TV shows or something. And it's like this is like, Jeffrey Anderson's in this, and it's like, now you now you're the biggest star on the planet.
00:53:19
Chris Prime
Yeah, her agent like was amazing. She's like, take this and then that and then, okay, well, you could ride this for like 10 years.
00:53:27
Zach Sheets
Yeah, it's like that that Friends thing isn't starting until next year. So yeah, go shoot this like a little horror movie that I got you.
00:53:34
Zach Sheets
And yeah, like I said, definitely like, you know, obviously Warwick Davis' is like iconic roles.
00:53:42
Zach Sheets
along with Along with Willow and I think probably also like the Harry Potter, like his character from Harry Potter. Was it Professor Flitwick?
00:53:53
Chris Prime
I always forget what he is. I just know that sometimes he plays, like, goblin characters in that movie, or sometimes he's the professor. But he kind of doesn't play a big role.
00:54:02
Zach Sheets
both. No, he's just kind of a supporting character in those movies, but he's you know he's recognizable, obviously.
00:54:10
Zach Sheets
And and you know the perfect the perfect movie to always watch for st Patrick's Day.
00:54:15
Chris Prime
Yeah, if you don't want if you want something that is like a little bit of that fall horror tone where it's like a Halloween slasher, but for for March, like it's different.
00:54:32
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:54:35
Zach Sheets
I mean, I think, was that, that was like kind like a tradition on sci-fi channel for a while. It like, oh, at St. Patrick's Day, we're just gonna play every leprechaun movie.
00:54:43
Zach Sheets
It was like the, like New Year's was Twilight Zone and St. Patrick's Day was leprechaun.
00:54:48
Chris Prime
Yeah, interesting that how they try to tie in, like, I guess sci-fi horror things around certain seasons.
00:54:55
Zach Sheets
Hmm.
00:54:57
Zach Sheets
At least once they have like you know a series you can like marathon.
00:55:00
Chris Prime
Hmm.
00:55:01
Zach Sheets
i mean You can play, like I don't know, Valentine's Day or like My Buddy Valentine or something on Valentine's Day, but that's like the only movie.
00:55:08
Chris Prime
No, Hard Eyes now.
00:55:09
Zach Sheets
If you want to program like a yeah a string of them, but like there's not like there's not like eight My Buddy Valentine movies or anything like that.
00:55:16
Chris Prime
True. not Not yet.
00:55:21
Zach Sheets
Yeah, Hard Eyes. think there is a scene with Hard Eyes coming... they're they're making that so maybe that'll be a franchise yeah harder eyes
00:55:29
Chris Prime
Is it two heart, two eyes?
00:55:34
Zach Sheets
but yes I think that'll do it for this week definitely if you're Leprechaun fan you know go check out that Lionsgate limited 4k it's in like a fancy like steelbook I think or if you're old school check out that that new the brand new VHS version
00:55:50
Zach Sheets
And yeah, hopeful but but hopefully everyone had a fun, you know, a fun flick tap matt day this week.
00:55:55
Zach Sheets
And come back next week, we're diving into TMNT 2 Secret of the Ooze. And actually, if you're if you're hearing this and you're gonna be at PAX East next week, on Thursday PAX East, we're gonna be doing a TMNT video game history panel, which and it's in the Dragonfly Theater, I believe, right, Chris?
00:56:18
Chris Prime
Yep.
00:56:19
Zach Sheets
Yeah, so 5 to 6 p.m. Eastern Time. If you're at PAX East, come check out our panel. By the time you hear the Secret News episode, it'll already be over. But if you're hearing before then, and you're going to be PAX come check that out.
00:56:33
Zach Sheets
And yeah, we'll and we'll we'll dig into Secret News before we talk about all the TMNT video games. And next too, our commentary is going going up. we did We watched Mom and Dad, the Nicolas Cage movie for 2018.
00:56:48
Zach Sheets
Because kind of there's kind of a couple similar movies, kind of like you know violent movies where everyone's trying to kill each other. And i think we also said it's kind of like March Madness.
00:57:00
Zach Sheets
Nicolas Cage definitely has the madness in that movie.
00:57:01
Chris Prime
Yeah. Well, it's about like right before like. What like that, like a it's weird. There's no family holiday.
00:57:13
Chris Prime
It's just like mom's day, father's day.
00:57:16
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:57:17
Chris Prime
They try to do sibling day, but parents day, if they ever do that, that's where mom and dad can come back again.
00:57:21
Zach Sheets
sense Yeah.
00:57:23
Chris Prime
Tie to that next time.
00:57:25
Zach Sheets
Sci-Fi Channel could play that later in that on that day if Sci-Fi Channel doesn't even exist anymore.
00:57:33
Zach Sheets
But yeah, check all that out next week. Head to site. We all have our usual stuff there, too. We got news, reviews, trailers, all kinds of stuff. Head over to main site, check all that stuff out. And yeah, so for Chris, I'm Zach, and we will see you next week.
