Rumble in the Bronx (1995)

This week on the Everything Actioncast, Zach and Chris head to the mean streets of Vancouver and discuss the 1995 Jackie Chan classic Rumble in the Bronx, which just celebrated the 30th anniversary of its US debut.

The film that brought Jackie Chan into the mainstream in the West, Rumble in the Bronx finds the martial arts legend playing Keung, who comes to the US to attend his Uncle Bill's (Bill Tung) wedding and finds himself under attack from a local motorcycle gang and, later, a crime syndicate run by the ruthless White Tiger (Kris Lord).  Zach and Chris discuss the insane locations, including the night club with a live tiger, how getting run over by a hovercraft doesn't seem that bad, Danny (Morgan Lam) playing a Game Gear with no game in it, the surprisingly brutal scene where Jackie gets pelted with glass bottles, and more.

You can rent or buy Rumble in the Bronx on Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.  Next week, with The Bride! coming out in theaters and transporting The Monster and The Bride to the 1930s, we're discussing the 1987 cult classic The Monster Squad, which brought almost all the Universal Monsters into the 80s.

Introduction and Overview

Zach Sheets
Hello and welcome to the Everything Action Cast podcast week of February 23rd, 2026. I'm your host, Zach.
00:00:25
Chris Prime
And I'm your co-host, Chris.
00:00:27
Zach Sheets
And this week we're getting into a rumble in the Bronx and talking about the 1996 Jackie Chan classic that's celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Rumble in the Bronx: Jackie Chan's Breakthrough

00:00:35
Zach Sheets
At least the yeah American release, celebrating its 30th anniversary. I believe i believe it came out like in China and Hong Kong the year before.
00:00:44
Chris Prime
So it's like doesn't sound as good.
00:00:46
Zach Sheets
31st for the the the original release.
00:00:52
Chris Prime
No milestone round number.
00:00:56
Zach Sheets
but that But the know American release is important because it's the... this This is kind of like the breakout for Jackie Chan. Finally, he became like a mainstream kind of American Hollywood star.
00:01:07
Chris Prime
Yeah, but not to someone like me who's been following him since like other movies. And I think, yeah, you're right.
00:01:12
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:01:14
Chris Prime
like This is for the populace where you didn't have to go to like some specialty store to see a Jackie Chan thing.
00:01:20
Zach Sheets
Yeah, get like weird bootlegs or like whatever
00:01:20
Chris Prime
Because weird bootlegs. Yeah, yeah. Or like, you know, you didn't have to hear about it through some friend who's really into martial art movies.

Marketing and Setting of the Film

00:01:31
Chris Prime
This was like, oh, and like coming to a theater now, you know.
00:01:33
Zach Sheets
whatever. Yeah, huge like New Line Cinema was behind it Huge full release in American theaters and it did super well. And then you know everyone got Jackie Chan fever.
00:01:43
Chris Prime
I think around this time, i might have seen one or two ads in comics, like the back of comics or definitely magazines.
00:01:54
Chris Prime
It was definitely the iconic like Check and Chan, like or no shirt while wearing like the tank top and then generic picture of the background of a city.
00:01:56
Zach Sheets
With like the ripped shirt.
00:02:06
Chris Prime
And then the words, yeah, a city.
00:02:06
Zach Sheets
A city.
00:02:08
Chris Prime
And then the like rumble in the Bronx title font that I'm surprised they held back and didn't make it like super Asian font. Like they just did that like very basic like like crackle font where like rumbling because you know, Prox is really known for its earthquakes apparently.
00:02:27
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:02:28
Chris Prime
The way they had the font, it looks like it it's like they wanted to be urban but not quite. Like they couldn't commit to it so it just it looks like earthquake font.
00:02:37
Zach Sheets
yeah it's kind it's kind of it's kind of has a little bit like that boys in the hood kind of like a trying to do that a little bit yeah that's like the modicure like poster and everything
00:02:41
Chris Prime
Yep.
00:02:43
Chris Prime
And, I mean, now, I think they updated it now to look closer to the Hong Kong version, where it's, like, Jackie Chan, like, wearing a ripped-up shirt. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But i there's, like, a couple of versions of the the look.
00:03:00
Chris Prime
And, like, God. I remember, like, later on the VHS release, where they went straight up, like, have Jackie Chan punch the the, like, coming at you. Like, you pissed them off.
00:03:09
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:03:11
Chris Prime
But the the look of Jackie Chan, uh, like, in it was like, check out this, like, unconventional hero. He's usually like, like, the way they try to pose it in the original trailer was that, like, as if he was, like, a psychic character who now gets, like, the

Martial Arts Films in America

00:03:28
Chris Prime
spotlight.
00:03:28
Chris Prime
But to people like me who grew up watching Jackie Chan movies from his earlier just stuff and where he was really just the hero, like, the local hero, this wasn't that new. It was just like, check get ready, New York. like Jackie Chan's here to mess you up.
00:03:44
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:03:46
Chris Prime
And if I believe right, like the the American like marketing thing, because it was like a year after the original filming wrapped up, and so they like got him to do promos for the movie, and it's like he's getting in that rush hour hair almost. like It's kind of getting ready in that direction.
00:04:02
Zach Sheets
here
00:04:04
Chris Prime
So, yeah, like, I think when this came out, it was the start the beginning of like, oh, like now that more movies are coming to America, we we could see like who's going to like what markets can get ready for this. Because I think up until like the 80s, it was just like what, like the Wu-Tang Clan, like promoting martial art movies in America.
00:04:29
Zach Sheets
Probably, yeah. Quentin Tarantino... might have been later. i don't like It might have been early Tarantino was like, oh, here's's i present this Jet Li movie.
00:04:39
Chris Prime
Yeah, yeah, that was later. that But, like, this was, I think, the beginning, where people saw Rumble the Bronx, because, you

Plot and Character Analysis

00:04:48
Chris Prime
know, they're like oh, shit, it's the Bronx? I have to see it. I gotta represent.
00:04:51
Chris Prime
And, at least in New York. This was, like, post-TMNT, like, New York needed something else that wasn't a mutant turtle, so then they turned to, like, Jackie Chan.
00:04:53
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:04:57
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:05:02
Chris Prime
It was a weird time to think about where martial arts are coming from now, especially for the East Coast, because you thought about martial arts prop prior to this.
00:05:07
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:05:09
Chris Prime
It was just like Mr. Miyagi. You know, like that was sort of ninjas like that.
00:05:14
Zach Sheets
and knit ninjas like the 80s ninja craze or like uh some like uh know like american ninja was in like the philippines and he was like stationed there
00:05:17
Chris Prime
That was mostly all West Coast.
00:05:29
Chris Prime
Yeah, like that's nowhere near like like an East Coast person's relation to anything. That's like, oh, I can imagine that. And the thing I do appreciate that in in the like city martial arts thing, this isn't a typical one-man... was an elite soldier on a hunt. This movie is grounded where some guy has some fighting abilities, depending on...
00:05:57
Chris Prime
depending on the movie, the original, or the redubbing, the context changes, because he honestly like isn't supposed to be like a super soldier.
00:06:08
Chris Prime
He's just a a normal dude that can fight on an average like better than most.

Authenticity and Filming Locations

00:06:13
Chris Prime
But anytime there's a gun waved at him, it's like, all right, well, I can't kick this.
00:06:18
Zach Sheets
yeah too far away yeah and he's and he's only in town for his his uncle bill's wedding we're supposed to be only just in town for his but uncle bill's wedding
00:06:25
Chris Prime
Yep.
00:06:28
Chris Prime
Which, again, like, <unk> it's like, I don't know how visas worked back then, but you can't just stay in America for like a week and it's like I'll leave whenever.
00:06:39
Zach Sheets
there's we just like I'll stay and help with the supermarket that you just sold. Alright, it's fine. Also, like here's my apartment. It's yours now for however long my honeymoon is. Pretty
00:06:50
Chris Prime
Well, Uncle Bill I get, where it's like, he was just house-sitting. That makes sense. And especially when it's like a rough neighborhood that they live in.
00:06:53
Zach Sheets
much, yeah.
00:06:57
Chris Prime
Yeah, no, you want a house-sitter.
00:07:00
Zach Sheets
But like helping helping the new owner of the of the supermarket is like security?
00:07:05
Chris Prime
That's part of the deal.
00:07:05
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:07:06
Chris Prime
That's hired muscle?
00:07:09
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:07:10
Chris Prime
I guess to, like, lower the cost, because then after that... Like, you just have to then hire private security. some places do hire private security to kind of enforce certain things, depending on how rough the neighborhood is.
00:07:23
Chris Prime
don't think you've had the pleasure of trying to food shop with, like, private security at the door.
00:07:28
Zach Sheets
no
00:07:31
Chris Prime
But yeah, no, they exist in, like, really interesting areas. I'm not sure in the Bronx. Back in, like, 1995, it was that bad, but they really made it seem like the Bronx was Gotham, especially when they introduced, like, what the Bronx is. Like, the only footage of the Bronx.
00:07:49
Zach Sheets
Yeah. i got I got very big Batman Forever vibes re-watching Purple and the Brox.
00:07:55
Chris Prime
Oh, yeah. Like, i so at night, it gets kind of like there's a whole, like, John Wick-esque underworld going on, like, a different land of New York. Yeah.
00:08:06
Zach Sheets
Fast and Furious like biker gang races.
00:08:09
Chris Prime
And then like crazy nightclubs that I don't think you can just have like, I don't know, a 21 year Tigers and then like a crazy like dance club thing.
00:08:15
Zach Sheets
Tigers.
00:08:20
Zach Sheets
we'll We'll get that in a bit. now but yeah we We'll talk about all the insane locations.
00:08:25
Zach Sheets
and And obviously, this movie was filmed in Vancouver and not New York.
00:08:29
Chris Prime
oh no, there are some shots in New York, but I don't think Jackie Chan went there.
00:08:29
Zach Sheets
So...
00:08:34
Zach Sheets
No. there's some There's a lot of establishing shots or just like stock footage, possibly, of just like the skyline of New York between scenes.
00:08:44
Chris Prime
and And then driving through Trap Manhattan.
00:08:47
Zach Sheets
Yeah, they they drove through Manhattan like to get to... They were in New York for a day, and then that was it.

Gang Life and Character Motives

00:08:54
Chris Prime
Oh, okay. so I just want to interject one part where like they're going to the Bronx and they and then there's just like crime happening.
00:09:01
Zach Sheets
yep
00:09:02
Chris Prime
I don't know if that was fake or real.
00:09:07
Zach Sheets
This point of the camera on the street, it's like, oh, the car.
00:09:09
Chris Prime
Yep. Then they... And then they were just getting beef footage because it looked too real to be something that they they purposely hired people for.
00:09:21
Chris Prime
Right. Like, it it just seems like there's a shitload of extras and probably if there were actors, do they film that one running scene? And if they did, how come they don't credit that?
00:09:31
Zach Sheets
like oh I guess we just accidentally caught a robbery on the film. Okay.
00:09:36
Chris Prime
Like, if you film random B-roll and it happens to capture, like, a crime, do you have to get a release?
00:09:46
Zach Sheets
The cops confiscate your film. It's like, well, this movie's evidence now.
00:09:50
Chris Prime
Well, especially if it's, like, an international film first, date does that still apply?
00:09:56
Zach Sheets
i mean, it seems still in the movie, so that was actually a crime. I guess they got cleared. They're like, all right, it's fine.
00:10:03
Chris Prime
But I don't know. i mean like It was so like so many things happening in that scene that it wouldn't have even shock me.
00:10:07
Zach Sheets
Yep.
00:10:10
Chris Prime
<unk>re Like, oh no, it was just like a casual show to how see how rough it is, but then we call it a crime.
00:10:16
Zach Sheets
And then everything everything is just like like in so covered in an insane amount of graffiti. Mm-hmm.
00:10:22
Chris Prime
Well, this was the few years into the Giuliani, like, regime where he his tough on crime crackdown started happening. So I'm not sure if you remember what New York was like in the like 70s, but if you ever seen Taxi Driver, it was like that up until like 1987.
00:10:44
Chris Prime
seven So if you think about it, that much graffiti and like theft wasn't bad.
00:10:45
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:10:52
Chris Prime
it was like, oh, it's getting better. It could be worse.
00:10:56
Zach Sheets
Well, I guess i guess they they put up all the graffiti. like they made They had a bunch of fake graffiti, but then they they had to clean it every night so like when they were done a shooting.
00:11:07
Chris Prime
Well, yeah, the I imagine in Vancouver, they just did not appreciate looking like the Bronx.
00:11:13
Zach Sheets
And then there was like the crazy too of like there's there's mountains in the background of Vancouver that don't exist in New York City. So they'd keep being aware of like, all right, don't show the mountains, even though like like the mountains show up pretty, like there's a couple of scenes like with the mountains in the background, obviously.
00:11:29
Chris Prime
Yeah, that that's the thing where like it could have just been rumble in like a city and then they would have been fine.
00:11:35
Zach Sheets
Yeah, rumble in the city.
00:11:37
Chris Prime
I mean, the Bronx really tries to tie in the New York aspect, but for whatever reason, they don't really show you a lot of New York only because of filming limitations. But I mean, this is also like 1995 and six, where a lot of people didn't have the Internet to like fact check that.
00:11:46
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:11:54
Zach Sheets
Yeah,
00:11:55
Chris Prime
you know I think because by today's standard, a lot of we filmed like a lot of movies have been filmed in Vancouver, Toronto, like New York.
00:12:06
Chris Prime
You can tell there's a difference now. like You could be like, I don't think that's there. That landmark isn't there.
00:12:12
Zach Sheets
yeah it was...
00:12:13
Chris Prime
I mean, they also they also do a good job of hiding any branding. like I was hoping to see like an eighty a 90s McDonald's or Burger King.
00:12:22
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:12:23
Chris Prime
Just something to kind of give me like an idea of what year it is and and like any kind of defining. like Oh yeah, no, they used to look like that back then. you know Anything like that. But they don't. they They're smart by putting making like all these brands that are pretty much like small things or non-franchise businesses.
00:12:45
Zach Sheets
Well, grocery store is full of, like, Pepsi and Coors Light and stuff like that. There's a couple like some recognizable like brands in there.
00:12:52
Chris Prime
Right, right, but it it's not really, like, zoomed in on as much. I mean, I think when you see, like...
00:12:55
Zach Sheets
No. I mean, there's, there is there's there is there's like, Chekhov's Pepsi can stack in the grocery store.
00:12:58
Chris Prime
we
00:13:02
Zach Sheets
Like, oh, someone's kicked through that stack of Pepsi cans.
00:13:06
Chris Prime
Yes. So, like, you know, it's the 90s. You can't really avoid that. But it's cool that, like, now and then that design does pop back up again. But when they they show you the Welchers like glass jugs, i was like oh man, I remember they used to make wel grape juice like that.
00:13:24
Zach Sheets
i think I think probably the the weirdest I mean it's not product plays but don't even really emphasize it but like Jackie Chan like giving a Danny hit like a Game Gear
00:13:34
Chris Prime
A Game Gear of no game.
00:13:35
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:13:37
Chris Prime
that automatically plays. And Jackie like gives it and goes, oh, that's my play thing. I'm like...
00:13:42
Zach Sheets
He pulls out of his pocket, first of all, which i would think I don't know if that would fit your pocket, and then...
00:13:46
Chris Prime
Wait, if it's 90s jeans?
00:13:46
Zach Sheets
But yeah,
00:13:47
Chris Prime
Yeah, you could.
00:13:50
Chris Prime
90s jeans pockets used to be like you could put like two fists in them in each back pocket. I'm
00:13:56
Zach Sheets
yeah he he's like, oh yeah, it's my old video game, I just gave it to him. This kid I met two minutes ago.
00:13:59
Chris Prime
like... That old video game cost about... What, like $130 back then?
00:14:07
Zach Sheets
I think i was looking up like Game Gear like when it was on the decline. I think it I think this is basically it was on it like its death row.
00:14:14
Chris Prime
Okay, that's why Jackie's like, take my garbage.
00:14:17
Zach Sheets
Yeah, this thing the I have a Game Boy now. Mm hmm.
00:14:21
Chris Prime
I mean, he gave that kid basically a whole thing of like, this thing requires six batteries. And you need to change it every week because the batteries will drain a lot.
00:14:32
Chris Prime
And Nancy's on a tight budget, so it's like, you know, Danny's just playing the home screen, having a great time.
00:14:40
Zach Sheets
Yeah, it's it's's like so obvious that there's not a game in it. Because it keeps they keep showing the back of the thing.
00:14:43
Chris Prime
But they couldn't...
00:14:46
Zach Sheets
It's like this empty like slot.
00:14:47
Chris Prime
But they couldn't just get, like, a cart and then just rip the label off.
00:14:52
Zach Sheets
something Yeah, if just you put something in there.
00:14:55
Chris Prime
But, I mean, they they're like, okay, nerds aren't watching this movie yet. But now, as a nerd watching it, you you just... It gets frustrating to watch Danny shake it as if he's playing it.
00:15:08
Zach Sheets
Oh my god, these graphics.
00:15:11
Zach Sheets
i'm I'm imagining them, that that they're awesome.
00:15:14
Chris Prime
I mean, listen, we never see like what Dany does all day, so for all we know, like he's just on like Percocet playing like this.
00:15:24
Zach Sheets
felt some I found these pills in Nancy's room. it took them.
00:15:30
Zach Sheets
She has like party drugs in her room for the club.
00:15:34
Chris Prime
Yeah, what what are the odds that... Uh, Nancy actually is like, not, uh, like kind of like a vice person, you know, she's just like a great sister, a dancer, 21, like, you know, and, and just like is affording rent in the Bronx. Um, Bronx.
00:15:54
Zach Sheets
In like a a massive apartment. like to Their apartment in and Uncle Bill's apartment are like are huge. They're like gigantic. For like New York City apartments, they're like an entire house.
00:16:05
Chris Prime
Oh, they have a floor. Like, if if you know, like. I don't know how big the apartment is, like how they laid it out, because it's kind of weird. It's like. Does Danny have an elevator in that building?
00:16:19
Zach Sheets
Hopefully. Hopefully.
00:16:20
Chris Prime
Because he's wheelchair bound and it doesn't seem like there's any like handicap accessible things in his house.
00:16:26
Zach Sheets
who
00:16:29
Zach Sheets
Well, it seems like like Nancy has her own room, but then Danny's room and the living room are one big room. cause like His half of the room is... like You can kind of see in the background there's sports banners and stuff. like but it's it's There's a wall or anything. It's just like the living room.
00:16:47
Chris Prime
Oh, really? I gotta take a further look at that. Well, maybe because like he doesn't need like a door.
00:16:51
Zach Sheets
It's like
00:16:53
Chris Prime
he you know just like let him roam.
00:16:55
Zach Sheets
Yeah. But it's all, it's all, kind of and it has like a very big like peewee vibes. Like it's just like, there's a crazy colors. There's just like crap on the wall.

Crime and Police Portrayal

00:17:05
Zach Sheets
And like Nancy's room is like, is like full, just like, like ribbons and like silks everywhere. is this It's like, what is, what is is what is this decorated dead?
00:17:16
Zach Sheets
and that goes for like, The, yeah, like we said, like the club, and then like later like the the gang's hideout that's like very like Foot Clan adjacent. They're like Lair with like the pinball machines everything in it.
00:17:30
Chris Prime
yeah uh the lair is just like classic 90s like goon hangout uh it's got everything where it's like what a kid would think is cool like as much snacks as you want and then party music pool smoking like it's it it yeah but it's like where do you guys earn money just like we steal refrigerators like
00:17:40
Zach Sheets
Yes. Mm-hmm.
00:17:47
Zach Sheets
Yeah, they have like they have a DJ. Yeah, we don't we don't really see them do like criminal activity. like like They're doing like illegal street races, but like they're not like... And then they're like their're busing they're like stealing at candy bars. like that's like That's the biggest crime they do.
00:18:08
Chris Prime
And there's also like 50 of them. So how are they how they earning money?
00:18:10
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:18:13
Chris Prime
How's Nancy? Like, Nancy really brings the money because she does like dancing at clubs. But it doesn't seem like everyone else the gang has some sort of like financial budget.
00:18:24
Zach Sheets
Yeah, it doesn't seem like they have like a racket. like like They're not like selling drugs or doing like stealing cars. or like like They don't have any sort of like like criminal activity they're doing.
00:18:34
Zach Sheets
and they lost And they lost the street race because Jackie like had like had to protect the car Uncle Bill was going to drive to his wedding because they were like driving the motorcycles on top of the cars. So they lost like $1,000.
00:18:46
Chris Prime
Yeah, that's true. So they're down money. And that's why it's like, oh, we will do some murderous things.
00:18:53
Zach Sheets
The gang is also... The gang feels like it's all it's all the members who got kicked. Like, they... they they're just like the outcasts of like other gangs. They just like made their own gang. Cause they're all just like, so like they dress all di crazy different. And they're like, it's like some of them drive Harleys. Some of them drive dirt bikes. Some of them drive like quads.
00:19:12
Zach Sheets
It's just like, it's just like a crazy diverse, like group of like gangs.
00:19:18
Zach Sheets
like stage Like, it's like, yeah.
00:19:19
Chris Prime
I give credit because it's like they're just friends.
00:19:22
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:19:23
Chris Prime
There's no theme. Everyone has different backgrounds and then whatever reason they have one Chinese member that like Jackie always gets targeting.
00:19:33
Zach Sheets
Do you think they're supposed to be like younger? like you they're supposed like i don't think They're not teenagers. I mean i guess they're like early 20s, but like some of them seem like much older than that.
00:19:46
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's like, it's weird because I looked up how old some actors were at the time and they were some rough looking 20 year olds.
00:19:54
Zach Sheets
Yeah. life at Life in Vancouver slash the Bronx is rough in the is
00:19:59
Chris Prime
I mean, just being exposed to so much like city life, I guess, and you're just like, I don't know, like, is it too much smog? know what's going on. Or is it too much dirt bike racing?
00:20:12
Chris Prime
But, yeah, no, like, they make it a point that, like, Nancy's 21, and it's like, oh, no, they're trying to make her, like, the love interest for Jackie.
00:20:22
Chris Prime
Even though they don't really have a connection.
00:20:26
Zach Sheets
it'ss It's just like, it's so sudden, like her turn to like, oh, i'm I'm like, I'm in a relationship to with Jackie Chan now. Yeah.
00:20:36
Chris Prime
it's like, this is Jackie, my boyfriend. He's like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. whoa
00:20:39
Zach Sheets
Because cause Nancy dating Tony, who's the leader of the gang. And then... they like The exciting incident is that jet like they they they're in the they're in the supermarket after like the marketplace after Elaine, who like buys it from Uncle Bill.
00:20:59
Zach Sheets
And then they're stealing like there're steal a bunch of candy bars and all their stuff. And then Jackie like fights them all and kicks them out. But then that like basically makes him a target for them for like the like the first half of the movie. They're just there's like constantly trying to fight him and like hunt him down.
00:21:15
Chris Prime
Yeah, its to mess with them, because how dare Jackie stand up to them?
00:21:18
Zach Sheets
Stand up. Yep.
00:21:20
Chris Prime
And honestly, it doesn't make sense that the police don't do anything, because it seems like they know that this is a gang territory or something.

Action Scenes and Emotional Impact

00:21:30
Zach Sheets
They, they, they, they, they know Angelo because like they, they call him by name. They're like, Oh, let Angelo go. We'll check him down later. See what he, see what he's up to.
00:21:37
Chris Prime
Yeah, every cop is sort of a caricature of cop characters from Dirty Harry.
00:21:44
Zach Sheets
yes
00:21:44
Chris Prime
like They're all laid back. They kind of don't care about their job. The only time they'll...
00:21:49
Zach Sheets
the chopping cigars, like, yeah, thick accents.
00:21:50
Chris Prime
Yeah, they're all smoking. They're all at they're all out of shape.
00:21:54
Zach Sheets
Yep.
00:21:55
Chris Prime
And that's definitely a Chinese choice to show like how lazy American cops are.
00:22:04
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:22:05
Chris Prime
Considering that this is sort of in a... like this is that It's interesting because in the prior Jackie Chan movies leading up to this, Jackie has been a cop character for other movies.
00:22:19
Chris Prime
And so you're used to him being a a person enforcing the law and very like diligent at his job. And then this first movie where it's international now, and he's he's trying to work with the American police, the American police are terrible at their job.
00:22:37
Zach Sheets
Yep.
00:22:38
Chris Prime
Like, they're comically terrible.
00:22:39
Zach Sheets
They try to call them.
00:22:40
Chris Prime
And there's
00:22:40
Zach Sheets
They put them on hold. Like days on hold with the cops.
00:22:41
Chris Prime
Yep.
00:22:42
Zach Sheets
are like but They put them on hold.
00:22:44
Chris Prime
That and there's no like Jackie equivalent. like He doesn't meet like the Bronx's version of him.
00:22:55
Zach Sheets
yep
00:22:56
Chris Prime
See, wouldn't that have been interesting? There was like another hotshot cop that kind of understands where Jackie's coming from and tries to like work with him and do things the American way. like Kind of like Red Heat style.
00:23:11
Chris Prime
But we don't even get that. They just went, alright, no, we can't steal a spotlight. We have Jackie Chan. So we need to make everyone else who's not Jackie Chan terrible.
00:23:20
Zach Sheets
Yep.
00:23:22
Chris Prime
So, I mean, that's why...
00:23:22
Zach Sheets
they're all They're all too old for this shit.
00:23:25
Chris Prime
But, like, that's why it took a few years later until someone figured out that they'll give him Chris Tucker.
00:23:31
Zach Sheets
Yep.
00:23:31
Chris Prime
And then that would work. But then Chris Tucker wasn't actually an amazing cop either. He was kind of, like, reckless. And is it... But like he's not reckless in a cool way. He's reckless in a like, wow, you you really should be a cop.
00:23:43
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Like blowing up cars in the middle of Los Angeles.
00:23:48
Zach Sheets
But, uh, I mean, and, the gang like The gang's, like, their, like, harassment of Jackie, like, like goes crazy. Like, it's such a wild, like, swing. Like, it goes from, like, kind of like, just, like, wacky to, like, brutal. Like, the the scene where, like, they're, like, hitting bottles at him in the alleyway is, like, super brutal.
00:24:09
Chris Prime
Oh, as a kid, I was like, this is horrifying because
00:24:12
Zach Sheets
Jackie's bleeding? What?
00:24:15
Chris Prime
usually there's like a crazy stunt that Jackie Chan will do that just seems very like, okay, I don't think I'll bring a situation where there'll be that much fire or like I'll be ill you raiding a temple.
00:24:24
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:24:27
Chris Prime
Like, you know what mean? Like if you think about Operation Condor or Armor of God, All those things where it's like, okay, so it's fantastical. It's just like, it's a cool stunt, cool set piece. Not a real problem for me.
00:24:41
Chris Prime
Being trapped in an alleyway with glass being thrown at you, that like that's that's like a real problem that someone could have tomorrow.
00:24:49
Chris Prime
I mean, it's weird because... Jackie didn't have to just keep playing dodge. He could have just taken off his jacket and then just wore it like sort of like a shield to kind of protect the flying glass shard from hitting his face, like his his exposed skin.
00:25:05
Zach Sheets
He's
00:25:06
Chris Prime
And that's what I was wondering. He's like, oh the more I watch that scene, like it's crazy that he sort of just took it like it
00:25:13
Zach Sheets
say's just taking it, yeah.
00:25:16
Chris Prime
I mean, yeah, he couldn't charge him because like the guy had the gun. And then he sort of just had to dodge. And then the rain of glass got him in the end.
00:25:27
Zach Sheets
but The way that scene ends is so weird, dude, because like Angel kind of buzzkills everyone and he's just like... like he like he like I think he does he like yell at Nancy or then like Nancy runs off and then everyone's like hits it he slapped the other yeah and then she she runs off Nancy runs off and then Tony runs closer to Nancy and everyone is like well we're we're gonna leave too like later like this is this is fun anymore then everyone just leaves and then it was like what come on guys
00:25:37
Chris Prime
No, no. he He slaps one of the other women.
00:25:52
Chris Prime
Well, it's one of those things where, like, you just had women in your gang that were someone's lady.
00:25:58
Zach Sheets
yep
00:25:59
Chris Prime
And I don't know if they were, like, shared or they were just the, the like, gang girlfriends where they all date them. I don't know.
00:26:09
Chris Prime
But either way, Angelo, they they did not care that Angelo wanted to kill Jackie. They were they were mad that, yeah like, Angelo slapped one of the other women. and then that ruined the fun.
00:26:22
Chris Prime
But yeah, basically that scene of Jackie crawling in the glass and just reminds me of Crime Alley from Batman.
00:26:28
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:26:30
Chris Prime
And you don't even see a lot of Jackie Chan movies where he's that badly like bleeding and injured like that.
00:26:36
Zach Sheets
But he recovers extremely quickly. like he just needs to get like he see he's washed off and then like he's like, oh, you're good.
00:26:37
Chris Prime
The next day, yo, it he's fine.
00:26:41
Zach Sheets
You slept it off.
00:26:43
Chris Prime
Like, did he did they pluck out any glass that got in him?
00:26:47
Zach Sheets
I mean, he had to have summon in him. Like, he was getting cut pretty bad.
00:26:53
Zach Sheets
But yeah, dan Danny and Nancy kind of, like, cleaned him up, and then, you know, like, the next morning he's like, oh, I'm i'm good, okay.
00:27:01
Chris Prime
Yeah, i need to go back to the store because the new owner wants me there to be the bodyguard.
00:27:08
Chris Prime
Which, again, he just could have called the store and just been like, yeah, i'm running late. Or, you know, I'm going call it easy tonight. I got beat up.
00:27:20
Zach Sheets
But then you just say
00:27:21
Chris Prime
yeah oh you you That's also weird. They don't go to the cops. Like, even though Jackie has been threatening beating up, Jackie's just like, alright.
00:27:25
Zach Sheets
No.
00:27:31
Chris Prime
I don't believe in the police, even though you are a police.
00:27:34
Zach Sheets
but think Well, Nancy comes in and I think he says, like, don't call the police.
00:27:37
Chris Prime
No, that's later.
00:27:38
Zach Sheets
That's later. Okay.
00:27:39
Chris Prime
See? it's It's way later.
00:27:40
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:27:41
Chris Prime
this is like If you think about it, alright. So, Kyung gets beat up by the... Kyung beats up the people at the supermarket. Doesn't call the police. He gets Ali beaten up.
00:27:52
Chris Prime
Doesn't call the police. he gets He gets chased the street.
00:27:54
Zach Sheets
chase on the street and then...
00:27:57
Chris Prime
Doesn't call the police. He just thinks this is New York. This is just what New York is.
00:28:01
Zach Sheets
That's how it is, yeah. Yeah, they like like they chase him into like a parking garage and then they they push a truck off the top of a parking garage into the middle of the street.
00:28:11
Zach Sheets
and
00:28:11
Chris Prime
Which, thank God they pushed it that no one was injured.
00:28:16
Zach Sheets
Everyone got out of the truck and everyone was flying.
00:28:18
Chris Prime
It's that soft truck full of of balls.
00:28:21
Zach Sheets
Bouncy balls. Yeah.
00:28:24
Chris Prime
Which is crazy that that guy doesn't have like a net or anything on top of his cargo truck. you know
00:28:28
Zach Sheets
Yeah,
00:28:29
Chris Prime
just a Anything can fly in, fly out, it doesn't matter.
00:28:34
Zach Sheets
yeah I mean, what if you just hit a bump? I mean, those balls are going to start flying
00:28:39
Chris Prime
You never thought about that. New York has a smooth... You'll never have a road incident in New York back then.
00:28:46
Chris Prime
You've seen... You've been through Manhattan and in like parts of New York City. like Never there's a car problem. No one will throw garbage right into your truck.
00:28:54
Zach Sheets
Oh, yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:28:58
Zach Sheets
i want I want to know more about that like ball delivery guy though because like his his outfit's crazy like he just seems like a crazy character he's got
00:29:06
Chris Prime
That is not like a New York thing. That is definitely a they They got some guy who probably owns those balloons and they got him to put balls to come be part of the movie.
00:29:19
Zach Sheets
<unk>s like a how he's got like a tie-dye shirt and he's got like a crazy like floppy American hat on
00:29:25
Chris Prime
don't know. Is he just like some local that like got...
00:29:28
Zach Sheets
the ball guy. He's like Jerry the ball guy.
00:29:29
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:29:32
Zach Sheets
because I don't yeah i don't i't think he's a famous person like the I guess like the ice cream guy is like a super famous like like Chinese like pop star, I think.
00:29:42
Zach Sheets
So that's supposed to be like a big like, oh my god!
00:29:45
Chris Prime
Well, the there are scenes of Chinese pop stars in other things. It's just not a about ball scene.
00:29:51
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:29:53
Chris Prime
But even then, it's like, yeah that's is what's his name?
00:29:56
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Emil Chow is like when they go like that, like inline skating bike, whatever that's going on the in the park when like Nancy and Jackie and Danny are like, now we're like, we're a family now.
00:30:08
Chris Prime
Yep. I mean, it makes sense. That's only for like the like Hong Kong audience that originally was for.
00:30:14
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:30:19
Zach Sheets
Oh, I think we definitely have to mention, we got we so we got to go back, like we mentioned a little bit earlier, but like the the club that Nancy works at is insane.
00:30:30
Chris Prime
Yep.
00:30:30
Zach Sheets
Because yeah cause after after like, because like like Nancy like and like becomes friends with Kyung, because like, oh, you you're you're you're nice to my brother, like you're a good guy. Okay, come to come to the club and we'll hang out.
00:30:43
Zach Sheets
And then it's it's like, is it like a church? it has like stained glass windows. And then there's a band playing on stage that's like a rock band, but then the music is techno.

Tone Shift and Plot Twists

00:30:54
Chris Prime
See, that's that's where the redubbing of the music.
00:30:57
Zach Sheets
red wub Yeah.
00:30:58
Chris Prime
Yeah, like, I think in the original one.
00:31:00
Zach Sheets
It was actually like a rock band.
00:31:02
Chris Prime
Yeah, because there's a lot of, like, rock music. And I also think it's the same rock band that you see at the end of the movie.
00:31:09
Zach Sheets
at Rock in the Park that gets like blown away by the hovercraft.
00:31:13
Chris Prime
Well, they don't get blown away. They just don't move. But I also like that the the rock band knows what a hovercraft is later.
00:31:22
Zach Sheets
but but also yeah But yeah, Nancy's in a... There's like a... two cages like there's in nay's in an inner cage and then there's a tiger a live tiger like prowling around this outside cage and like attacking her cage and then she's like dancing in like in like a bikini like in the kid like the smaller cage
00:31:41
Zach Sheets
it's like where do you where do you like i don't think you're allowed to have a live tiger in new york yeah in vancouver yeah
00:31:46
Chris Prime
In New York? Probably not. But in Toronto? Yeah, whatever. Or like Vancouver?
00:31:52
Zach Sheets
was was so Was like Tiger King operating during this time?
00:31:55
Chris Prime
Oh yeah. This is the... Tyra King was operating until like, what? 2013? 2015? It was something crazy.
00:32:04
Chris Prime
wasn't fifteen it was something crazy
00:32:08
Zach Sheets
Or this guy just got it from like the Vancouver Zoo. It's like, you guys got a tiger some sort of other animal we can use?
00:32:15
Chris Prime
Like, you know what's crazy? Wouldn't this make sense that that was where White Tiger is first introduced? Like, he's the owner of the club?
00:32:24
Zach Sheets
yeah yes that that's why there's tigers because like it's tiger club it's with white tigers club
00:32:26
Chris Prime
There is such a...
00:32:32
Chris Prime
Yeah. And I feel like maybe in the Hong Kong version it makes more sense, but in the English version, they just sort of do some crazy, like... Like, anyway, White Tiger. it's like... the We failed to mention that like the gang's not even like the main villain of the movie.
00:32:49
Zach Sheets
they're Yeah, they're they're like hassling Jackie for like the first half. But then kind culminates like halfway through when Jackie, he goes, they they like totally trash the like the grocery store.
00:33:01
Zach Sheets
And then Jackie gets mad and like goes to their hideout and then starts like then we get the the big like hideout fight. Where he's he's using like the ski to fight guys. He's using like, he's like the pinball machines. Like he and Tony have like the fight on the pi and the pool table.
00:33:17
Zach Sheets
But then Jackie wins that fight and then kind of like shames them. Like, hey, everyone thinks you're the scum of the city. like you should do Be better. Be better people. But then like the one the one guy comes in with like garbage bags. and then Because haven't mentioned, play Angelo so oversaw like a like a diamond heist go bad or a diamond exchange go bad.
00:33:43
Chris Prime
No, he didn't even see that. He saw basically, you know, he saw he investigated the crash of a diamond heist gone wrong, but a diamond like exchange got wrong, but he didn't even know where they're from or anything.
00:33:45
Zach Sheets
He saw the like the guys chasing that, like...
00:33:54
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:33:56
Chris Prime
He just sort of robs dying, injured people, not knowing that like the diamond thing was from something else.
00:33:57
Zach Sheets
It's like they had gold watches.
00:34:04
Chris Prime
Like he just robs people that were dying
00:34:09
Zach Sheets
They taped their watches.
00:34:11
Chris Prime
It is like, he's truly like a monster and the movie, he has no repercussion.
00:34:18
Zach Sheets
but yeah but he yeah he gets he steals i think is it's seven million dollars of diamonds is what they're worth and he say takes those and so then so now like these next higher level criminals like these international diamond thieves or like uh led by white tiger are now like running around vancouver trying to find them
00:34:41
Zach Sheets
And then they they take two of Tony's guys and then they they feed one to a wood chipper. And then, like like, the other guy that survives comes back to the hideout with, like, two garbage eggs full of, like, human goo. or just, like, chopped up human.
00:34:55
Zach Sheets
And they're like, look what they did to, like, our our boy. It's like... Everyone, like, looks at it and, like, starts throwing up.
00:35:02
Zach Sheets
Which is... That's, like, another, like, trip crazy tunnel shift. Like, oh, there's just like there's, like, bags full of, like, gore in like they brought this hideout it's like chopped by a wood chipper like it's fargo
00:35:16
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's funny because, like, the movie doesn't prepare you like this. the The bloodiest thing that happened so far has been Jackie Chan just getting glass rained on him.
00:35:30
Chris Prime
But no one died.
00:35:31
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:35:32
Chris Prime
They ramped that up by the the shootout, which I get. Like, that was to show how tough. But, like, it seemed like a fair thing where they had guns. The bad guys had guns.
00:35:44
Chris Prime
But then wood chipper is just its own like, oh, wow, these guys are like serious now.
00:35:54
Zach Sheets
And then making the other guy carry bags of his friend back to the hideout.
00:35:59
Chris Prime
Did you do you think they made him walk back or they dropped him off?
00:36:03
Zach Sheets
i they're they They seem to make him walk back. Like, you gotta carry your friend back. Tell whoever's got the diamonds that we want the diamonds back. You gotta carry your friend back to the hideout.
00:36:15
Chris Prime
and it's like, we should go to the police. Nah.
00:36:19
Zach Sheets
Still, yeah, still still no.
00:36:22
Chris Prime
Even though there was a man that was mulched.
00:36:25
Zach Sheets
do love, like, Nancy's just like, I love her like kind of like sort sort of nonchalant and is like, oh no, one of my friends got murdered.
00:36:33
Chris Prime
Yeah, that's definitely a, uh...
00:36:36
Zach Sheets
A weird dub thing.
00:36:37
Chris Prime
Like a weird dub, just sort of like they didn't know how to emotionally bring that in.
00:36:44
Chris Prime
But it's weird because like Francois, yep, like she did her own dubbing.
00:36:47
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:36:50
Chris Prime
So she just didn't know to like, I don't know why they didn't just like reshoot that line.
00:36:57
Zach Sheets
but But Angela, he hides he hit the diamonds in Danny's wheelchair cushion. So that's where the diamonds are. So now everyone's just trying to find where they are. But then Jackie thinks that the the like white tigers guys are FBI agents. So he's like, oh, I i know some FBI guys. Like, I'll go go tell them.
00:37:18
Zach Sheets
And it turns out, oh, no, they no, they're criminals. They're criminals.
00:37:23
Chris Prime
Yeah, it'll help.
00:37:23
Zach Sheets
And then...
00:37:25
Chris Prime
they'll Definitely like this is the the like I get it. They didn't want to work with the police, but it's like, oh, no, the FBI like that's worse.
00:37:35
Zach Sheets
with with no didn't show They didn't show Jackie any credentials. No badges, nothing. just like taking their where He's just taking their word on it.
00:37:42
Chris Prime
Well, he doesn't know he's not from here.
00:37:44
Zach Sheets
Yeah. He's only been here for, like, what? Two days? Three days?
00:37:50
Zach Sheets
But then, but that's how he gets roped into this big deal. has to make a deal with White Tiger. Nancy and Tony and Danny. Everyone gets like, well, Dana's getting kidnapped, but Tony and Nancy definitely And then it's like, oh, if you want your friends back, gotta get us the Diamonds.
00:38:15
Zach Sheets
And then they, the crew store gets demolished again because White Tiger has like his guys like rip the building down with like a tow truck.
00:38:23
Chris Prime
Well, it's funny because like Uncle Bill got away skirt.
00:38:23
Zach Sheets
Yep.
00:38:27
Chris Prime
Like he got his money, his he he left.
00:38:28
Zach Sheets
Yep.
00:38:31
Chris Prime
And like Eileen is just like she got tricked. She didn't realize how rough of a neighborhood her store is in. She didn't realize that like her this like bodyguard is going to like destroy her home and business.
00:38:47
Zach Sheets
that they were bring international criminals like targeting your store.
00:38:54
Zach Sheets
but yeah, that that but that that is like kind of an awesome, like they ripped the building down and then they you get like the or like that like that what's left of it and like her, like, Elaine's like like apartment of the the store, I guess. And then it's just like half the bathroom and like half the living room.
00:39:12
Zach Sheets
and there's like, oh no. you know It's almost like like a Family Guy when like cleveland like his house gets like front ripped off of and it's like, no, no, no, no. no
00:39:20
Chris Prime
Yep. But like, that's also and an Asian comedy thing is to show someone on the toilet like that. Just sort of like stunned.
00:39:26
Zach Sheets
Yep.
00:39:27
Chris Prime
So I'm used to that as a kid. That's like, that's funny. how How do you not laugh that someone basically got caught with their pants down?
00:39:30
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:39:36
Zach Sheets
But this is like finally like Jackie like goes to the cops, though. then but then they're like, oh, well, you got to everything. You got to wear a wire and go meet them.
00:39:47
Zach Sheets
And we'll just hang back and like what like like watch you. we got were like We're here with you, but...
00:39:54
Chris Prime
Yeah, I mean, that makes sense that the police in this, they're so incompetent. They're like, no, no, you got this. We're not even going to give you a gun. or i You know what's funny, though? The White Tiger Gang pretty much said, like, no police, but after like this and sign an incident, it's like, oh, no, you're going to go to the police, right? This is what broke you.
00:40:15
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm. But they're but they're like they're surprised. It's like, oh, he went the police? He's wired. no. Why do you do that?
00:40:22
Chris Prime
Yeah. It is pretty let's just say like it's really dumb that like they let them like. They didn't try to get the the diamonds this one time. They really were like, oh, you went to the store while we're we're here to like destroy the store, too.
00:40:36
Chris Prime
Did they know that Jackie was in there?
00:40:40
Zach Sheets
I don't know. Like, were they... did like Was it just like intimidate him? or like were they trying to cause They couldn't kill him because they they needed him to find it they because they thought he knew where the diamonds were.
00:40:51
Zach Sheets
So they can't like you can't just kill him and be like, well, now we can get our diamonds. but But he was literally inside of it.
00:40:55
Chris Prime
Right, but they didn't know that he would be in that six yeah the safe room that if it fell, it wouldn't kill him. Like, what if he died in that? And then it's like, okay, can we still get our diamonds back?
00:41:09
Zach Sheets
Well, they I mean, they they kind of they have beened they abandoned the diamonds when they're like, it's like, oh, the cops are onto to us now. Just like abandoned everything. Like kill everyone. Don't give her the diamonds. We don't care anymore. No loose ends.
00:41:21
Chris Prime
Well, they did that when they realized like they got caught by the police. But they sent the thugs, if you think about their plan, they sent the thugs to to like Nancy's apartment for Danny's cushion.
00:41:33
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:41:34
Chris Prime
So I get like, okay, that's where it starts the exchange. Then while Jackie's trying to figure out like, oh, how I get get these diamonds to them, they destroy Jackie's former uncle's, his uncle's former store.

Climactic Hovercraft Chase

00:41:47
Zach Sheets
cause they Because they think he own they think Jackie owns the store.
00:41:50
Chris Prime
Right, right, right. But then it's like, hey, we don't forget our deal. It's like later today or tomorrow.
00:41:58
Chris Prime
So that's where I see like the plan really just going weird because they're like, OK, I know we've we've destroyed your like things. You're still going to call the police, right?
00:42:09
Zach Sheets
but Yeah, we still have your two friends, or like one friend and then one guy that i't that you probably don't really care that much about.
00:42:19
Chris Prime
They
00:42:20
Zach Sheets
They took... they took but Tony Nancy are are hostages.
00:42:22
Chris Prime
took Tony and... and But we don't see Angelo anymore.
00:42:29
Zach Sheets
no
00:42:30
Zach Sheets
they well they They all go to, like, Angelo's, like, trailer that he lives in. And they then that's where, like, we let like we last see that like Nancy and Tony being held hostage. And they tell, like, Jack has to, like, go the two guys. They go to, like, the Nancy and Danny's apartment to find the diamonds. But, yeah, I think Angelo just, like, disappears.
00:42:50
Zach Sheets
Because he's not, like, he's not with them in the hovercraft at the end.
00:42:53
Chris Prime
Ooh. So maybe, like, in some other version, they they, like, they totally, like, yeah, you got his kind of opens.
00:42:59
Zach Sheets
They, like, executed him or something. You're the you're the guy that sold diamonds. Like, you don't get to get out of this
00:43:06
Chris Prime
I could see that.
00:43:10
Zach Sheets
of this. yeah, but this whole... They're going to do this handoff, but then that goes bad. then we get the big... the the big finale of the movie, which is the hovercraft chase.
00:43:25
Chris Prime
Which is weird to think that this whole movie was leading up to like a hovercraft chase and not like a train fight or something in the Bronx or in the tiger cage, like hovercraft.
00:43:36
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Yeah. You know, the famous, the famous New York city hovercraft.
00:43:41
Chris Prime
which I lived in New York. I don't know where you go to get one. It wasn't something that is New York's known for.
00:43:48
Zach Sheets
No, i don't I mean, I don't think there's hovercraft in New York City. i think this' is very it's like it's like It's like a Canadian like Coast Guard hovercraft. I think they like kind of painted put a skin on.
00:43:59
Zach Sheets
They use that hovercraft for like rescue operations or something. But think i think but it's it's I think it's a very like Canadian thing. I'm like, we got a hovercraft to go across like the channels.
00:44:09
Chris Prime
it wouldn't wouldn't like the Canadian government will be really proud about their hovercraft and sort of like, eh, won't let you film on it, but you gotta, you gotta kind of mention that this is like a Canada thing.
00:44:24
Zach Sheets
Well, I mean, it says it says like JT Tours. don't know if that's a real thing or if that's let's like they put like that, like like a like a skin on it or something. like INDB says that the cover craft is used by the Canadian Coast Guard for rescue, fishing, and navigational assistance.
00:44:40
Chris Prime
I feel like that's what a hovercraft really is made for.
00:44:42
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:44:44
Chris Prime
Though, I feel like a hovercraft tour is super loud. That machine, that it's like so loud that they're like, anyway, look to the right.
00:44:48
Zach Sheets
Probably, yeah.
00:44:52
Chris Prime
You're just like, what?
00:44:54
Chris Prime
Like, if you think how loud a hovercraft in a Florida, like swamp hovercraft is.
00:45:00
Chris Prime
Is that the same fan boat?
00:45:00
Zach Sheets
so like like like an airboat? Yeah.
00:45:02
Chris Prime
Air boat, yeah. Now, it's like an airboat is the same thing as a hovercraft, except that like how it navigates the ground is through a cushion. So it's still a loud fan.
00:45:15
Zach Sheets
and it's it's like it's It's not like great it's like a ferry. I guess you could carry people across, but then like they're like... It's not like you can bring a car... If you had a giant hovercraft, guess could bring cars across, too. but like it's not you know That's why like New York has ferry boats that don't have hovercrafts.
00:45:33
Zach Sheets
People need to bring their cars with them, too.
00:45:36
Chris Prime
True, true.

Action Stunts and Filming Challenges

00:45:38
Zach Sheets
But yeah yeah, it's this whole whole crazy like elaborate hovercraft scene. Jackie does like like barefoot water skiing behind it. Oh, I've got to mention too, there's a somewhat, it kind looks like a pretty simple stunt, but it's what caused Jackie the most injury on this movie. He has to jump the dock, or kind of like like the dock or like like a kind like a cement barrier thing onto to the hovercraft.
00:46:05
Zach Sheets
And then...
00:46:06
Chris Prime
Oh, that is a, like, foundation pillar.
00:46:11
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Yeah. It's a sort like pillar thing. But then jump from that to the hovercraft and then that kind of like seemingly simple jump, like he broke his foot on that landing on the hovercraft. He landed bad.
00:46:24
Chris Prime
He landed straight onto, like, steel-like door.
00:46:27
Zach Sheets
m Which, I mean, the shot that's in the movie is him breaking his foot. so
00:46:33
Zach Sheets
And then there's a great like like super creative way to hide his like cast that he had to get where they they made like a sleeve that's a sneaker and like a sock. So it looks like his other leg it looks like his's like he's wearing two shoes.
00:46:47
Chris Prime
but I think it's like painted. It's not like some cool 3D printed thing. They literally just like painted some cloth.
00:46:52
Zach Sheets
it's like it's like a paint It's like a painted sock or like a paint like so like a sleeve that he like pulls over his foot. And it's like, oh, I'm wearing his shoes. Look.
00:47:00
Chris Prime
Good for now. He was probably on a lot of painkillers to like hobble for shots.
00:47:07
Zach Sheets
Well, think apparently, yeah, apparently like it took like, that one took like a while to heal. Like he was like filming, i think Thunderheart was the next one or Thunder, what's the that one?
00:47:17
Zach Sheets
Thunderbolt was the next one and he was still, guess his foot was still broken during it when he started doing that one.
00:47:22
Chris Prime
I think Thunderbolt's the one where it's like he's an F1 driver. Not an F1, but he's he's a race car driver.
00:47:29
Chris Prime
So it's a lot of him sitting.
00:47:30
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Which I guess, yeah, that helps. That helps, like, oh, my foot's broken.
00:47:35
Zach Sheets
Well, I'm just gonna... Let's fill all the cockpit seats.
00:47:35
Chris Prime
Well, time to film that movie where I'm a race car driver for most of it.
00:47:41
Chris Prime
yeah That's another movie that didn't get like an American release.
00:47:46
Chris Prime
But it's got a crazy cover because it doesn't look like it's kung fu. It looks like Jackie Chan's like a stunt driver.
00:47:51
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:47:53
Zach Sheets
He was little use a little too early for like the like you know Fast and the Furious like racing kind of genre.
00:48:01
Chris Prime
Yeah, it was like if he just did something, but he actually takes on in that movie, he takes on like a guy who's addicted to crime and racing.
00:48:12
Zach Sheets
yeah those Yeah, those came out the same year 1995 and I guess Kong.
00:48:17
Zach Sheets
Oh, and also Jackie Chan Fist of Fire, the arcade game came out that same year too. that was a huge year for Jackie Chan.
00:48:23
Chris Prime
That's crazy.
00:48:24
Zach Sheets
The fighting game.
00:48:26
Chris Prime
I think, did he film Project A like 2 around this time or before?
00:48:33
Zach Sheets
That was like 87. That was like 87.
00:48:36
Chris Prime
Okay, I'm confusing which one. But like he he rocks the same haircut up until like rush hour.
00:48:40
Zach Sheets
the a
00:48:43
Zach Sheets
Yeah, first First Strike was the next big one, looks like.
00:48:47
Zach Sheets
He was in a Warren G music video.
00:48:51
Chris Prime
Does he know that?
00:48:53
Zach Sheets
For what's love got to do with it?
00:48:56
Zach Sheets
Oh, yeah, oh, yeah, because I think they that that was they put that song at the end of, like, the American version of Supercop as, like, like the for the blooper song. but Yeah, but this Warren G song, I think it was, like, I don't know Jake James actually like, a pure, like, Jet Li style. Like, do remember Jet Li was in, like, the, like, that,
00:49:18
Zach Sheets
was it, like, the Aaliyah song? But, or was it just clips?
00:49:24
Chris Prime
it clips. Well, no, there's a part where like Jet Li is singing and and Oh, no. Ali is singing and Jet Li does like martial art moves around her.
00:49:31
Zach Sheets
Yeah, Jet Li's actually in that music video. I just like i don't know if Jackie Chan is in like in person in that music like they weren' g music video.
00:49:40
Chris Prime
I mean, after we just watched Rumble the Bronx, I kind of want to... We should watch Thunderbolt.
00:49:47
Zach Sheets
so Throw that in the the commentary queue for for our annual like New Year Jackie Chan commentary.
00:50:01
Chris Prime
People. Yeah, like,
00:50:02
Zach Sheets
We find out, apparently, if you get run over by a hovercraft, it's actually not that bad. Because, like, Jackie gets, like, fully run over by the hovercraft, and he's fine. just, like, pops out of the sand because it runs out of the beach.
00:50:12
Zach Sheets
And then it starts, like, going down, like, the street, which, you know, which is, like, the cool thing about hovercraft is that you you can drive it anywhere you want. It's, like, water, beach, swamp, streets,
00:50:23
Chris Prime
people
00:50:25
Zach Sheets
Yeah, rover people.
00:50:27
Chris Prime
yeah like I always thought like being run over by a machine is like really bad. But apparently Hovercraft is one those like, oh no, like it it like forms around things and will put pressure, like it will move the pressure around so that it doesn't smother like quickly on somebody. So it's not being exactly run by a bouncy house. It's like hit by pool, I guess.
00:50:52
Chris Prime
like being hit by like a pool i guess
00:50:55
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:50:57
Chris Prime
So like it forms around and only if like it doesn't know where to go. Like if the pressure builds all around, that's where like it sucks to be right there.
00:51:04
Zach Sheets
yeah if it Yeah, if it stays at the top of you and like you're like you're like stuck under it, but if it's just like it just like goes right over you, apparently it's fine. Mm-hmm.
00:51:14
Chris Prime
Apparently it's like being stepped on by like one foot, but I doubt that. that But that's the pro like approximation I'm reading where it's like you just get like a lot of intense pressure, but it it's survivable.
00:51:28
Chris Prime
like i was just like It's not like a steamroller.
00:51:31
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:51:32
Zach Sheets
I guess the cushioned air was like, it makes it like helps like it makes it lighter, even though it's probably like, and don't know how much a hovercraft weighs. I'm sure it's like a lot. I'm sure it's like, like, like a ton, like close to a ton or like a couple hundred pounds.
00:51:47
Chris Prime
Yeah, i don't know if physics works where it's like, oh, in motion, not that bad. But if it stands still on you, pretty terrible.
00:51:52
Zach Sheets
If, and if the, the, you know, skirt deflates, forget about it.
00:51:56
Chris Prime
Oh yeah, once once the air is all out, somehow like if you're you're trapped under it, you're gone.
00:52:01
Zach Sheets
and
00:52:04
Zach Sheets
But, yeah, it causes all kinds of mayhem, and then Jackie manages to find... like There just happens to be like like an antique store nearby, he grabs like like a like a soup crazy sword from the antique store, and also then steals like a guy's... What's it, like a Porsche? Or like a a Ferrari or something?
00:52:25
Zach Sheets
Some sort of supercar. And then... drives along the side of the hover cart, that cuts the skirt open, and like finally causes the crash. He's able to get down and arrest all the guys. so like he He arrests all the the White Tiger's guys. The cops don like don't help him at all.
00:52:43
Chris Prime
Yeah, which is, again, the message that Jackie's the better cop everywhere.
00:52:48
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:52:49
Chris Prime
But it's funny the cops don't shoot the air of the, like, just aim for the the skirt on the hovercraft. They sort of just like, it's unstoppable.
00:52:59
Zach Sheets
yeah I mean, it's yeah, it's it's a rubber... I mean, it's probably thick rubber, but it's just rubber. I mean, i don't know how... I'm sure it's you probably shoot a bullet through it.
00:53:09
Zach Sheets
guess it's just like, oh my god, it's hovercraft.
00:53:15
Zach Sheets
But then... even crazier thing about the cops is like, they're like, oh, we't we know where White Tiger is. Jackie Chan, you you you and your friends can just drive this hovercraft and go go get him. Like, just like, yeah, just take it over to the golf course and run him over.
00:53:30
Chris Prime
See, it's weird that there should have been a scene where it's like the lawyers have made the cops like untouchable to White Tiger. But like Jackie's not a U.S.
00:53:42
Chris Prime
cop so that the rules don't apply to him. Sort of like a Batman like thing where it's like, oh, Batman's not a cop.
00:53:47
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:53:49
Chris Prime
He's not gonna follow the law. It doesn't apply to him.
00:53:54
Zach Sheets
and there's There's like there's like a a little bit earlier on when like the the cop the cops do arrest like two white tigers guys, but then they get released because their lawyer shows up. is' like They got these high-powered lawyers. They're always getting off.
00:54:05
Chris Prime
Yeah, but it doesn't make sense where they already had the guys that point the finger to White Tiger and all that, and then it's like, okay, no, no, let's let Jackie Chan get his revenge. like
00:54:15
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:54:17
Chris Prime
He deserved it.
00:54:20
Zach Sheets
Perion's also like, it's extremely easy to pilot a hovercraft because like the guy's like, you just do this, this, and this. Got it? He's like, sure. He's like, all right, go.
00:54:28
Chris Prime
And then they like leave Jackie Chan and his friends there by themselves. like The pilot doesn't join them.
00:54:33
Zach Sheets
Yeah, he's just like, yeah yeah you you're good? All right, going to take a break now. Bye.
00:54:38
Chris Prime
Good look at my hovercraft that I was just like hijacked at.
00:54:41
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:54:44
Zach Sheets
But yeah, it's like, it's like it's Elaine is is somehow there. Like, she shows up. She got picked up or somehow. And then, like, Nancy and Tony are there.
00:54:52
Chris Prime
Tony.
00:54:54
Zach Sheets
tony's Tony's, like, best buds Jackie Chan now. And they're all like, yeah, let's go get him. And then they... they they White Tiger is, like, golfing at, like, a country club. And then they...
00:55:05
Zach Sheets
tried the hovercraft on the golf course and run them over and like all his clothes get ripped off. And then they're like, yeah, we did it. And that's the end of the movie. It's such a a crazy sudden end.
00:55:15
Zach Sheets
There's like, like, you don't even see like White Tiger get arrested. It's like, he just gets like humiliated and run over by a hovercraft. That's it.
00:55:21
Zach Sheets
That resolves
00:55:21
Chris Prime
But isn't that isn't that worse than to like not even get charged with a crime?
00:55:29
Chris Prime
Just sort of get like publicly spanked by a hovercraft?
00:55:29
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:55:32
Zach Sheets
yeah all your wealthy friends like see your ass hanging out you're like oh he's not so cool anymore
00:55:38
Chris Prime
We shouldn't fear white tiger anymore, even though it doesn't quite make sense why he's like white tiger. You know, like. I think they don't refer to white tiger in the beginning, right?
00:55:50
Chris Prime
He's just like they're just generic crime things.
00:55:50
Zach Sheets
no well the cop i didn the cops tell the cops tell Jackie that oh they're
00:55:54
Chris Prime
And then it's it's like, oh, it's white tiger. there's Oh, my God. How do they know I'm white tiger?
00:56:01
Zach Sheets
the leader's a guy named White Tiger. and then Jackie brings it up when he's like trying to like get the information out of them. And then this what spooks them like, how does he know? How does he know? where He's talking to cops. They're like, only cops know about White Tiger.
00:56:12
Chris Prime
Is White Tiger just like a Bronx villain? Like, I don't... Like, if he was that famous, wouldn't he be internationally known?
00:56:21
Zach Sheets
seems like he's like, yeah yeah have he obviously seems like he's like international, like criminal. Like he seems like he's like, you know, going around places and doing stuff.
00:56:30
Zach Sheets
It'd be weird if he's like a local Bronx crime boss.
00:56:35
Chris Prime
But, like, he lives in... what what could be Westchester or whatever his like a mansion is.
00:56:41
Zach Sheets
yeah m
00:56:45
Zach Sheets
he's he's going to like a country club that's like in the country. in the mountain the the mountains of New York. It was where the the golf club course is.
00:56:54
Zach Sheets
And then, of course, you get the yeah we get the the great Jackie Chan blooper reel we always get for a Jackie Chan movie.
00:57:02
Zach Sheets
you You see him like trying out like the the barefoot water skiing part. You see him break his leg.
00:57:09
Chris Prime
So of those stunts, a lot of them probably make more sense if they showed you behind the scene footage, some contacts or like the the like injuries, because a lot of them are like they give us like an ambulance. You know, it's not just like, OK, hey, I'm hurt. But my head is like, oh, no, you're and you're in like traction. You need to go to the

Cultural Impact and Legacy

00:57:28
Chris Prime
hospital.
00:57:29
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Yeah. like, yeah, jack Jackie broke his foot. think Francois Yip broke her leg when she was, like, driving over, like, the cars on the motorcycle. like something She, like, fell off or something and broke her leg.
00:57:41
Zach Sheets
And then i think, like, Stanley Tong, I think also, like, he, I think he did, he did like, the jump from the, like, to the fire escape.
00:57:54
Chris Prime
Wait, the director did?
00:57:57
Zach Sheets
In Jackie Chan's book, he said, like Stanley Tong doubled for Jackie Chan for the like the building jump.
00:58:05
Chris Prime
Really?
00:58:06
Zach Sheets
Because Jackie's knees were like like really like like not in the best shape at that point.
00:58:13
Chris Prime
a crazy jump.
00:58:14
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:58:15
Zach Sheets
but But I think he, like, you know like, twisted ankle or did something to ankle or something. Like, during that jump, too, so...
00:58:23
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's like, oh it was either going be Jackie's knee or Stanley Tongue's ankle. So no one was going to walk away safe from that jump.
00:58:33
Zach Sheets
But it's but it's it's crazy like that that that one is like not the one that caused like the serious injury like this like jumping like a parking garage to like a fire escape across like a you know however many stories it was and it's like just jumping from like that like concrete pillar to a hovercraft like a couple feet away. It's like what it like causes damage.
00:58:53
Zach Sheets
I guess it's just like, yeah, if you land bad, it's just like, it doesn't really matter what height it is. like when Tom Cruise broke foot or whatever in Mission Impossible and he just that one roof jump.
00:59:07
Chris Prime
True, yeah, we did that run after Henry Cavill.
00:59:11
Zach Sheets
Hmm.
00:59:12
Zach Sheets
Wow. i'm just I'm just looking at it every quick. like Apparently, someone thinks that the the Game Gear was a Chinese bootleg that had built-in games in it. So that's why he's able to play it.
00:59:23
Chris Prime
Huh. don't think don't they had onboard memory chip like that back then.
00:59:31
Zach Sheets
Because it's possibly a game a Chinese bootleg knockoff of a Game Gear with a compilation of 96 games loaded into the handheld. Yeah, did they have that kind of like... There's always like Timu NES bootleg machines now. I mean, know that and es bootleg machines now i mean i know that
00:59:49
Chris Prime
So, like, I had one of those, like, five games in one for my Game Gear. I think I owned, like, three official Game Gear games, and then I owned two, like, hack carts back then. And that was kind of expensive, but, like, it was worth it because, if like, it was, like, $50, but you own, like, seven Game Gear games built into the cart.
01:00:12
Chris Prime
So, I mean, but, like, you still need the cart.
01:00:14
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
01:00:16
Chris Prime
The cart's the expandable memory part of the system.
01:00:19
Zach Sheets
Yeah, i think it was i think I think it was like, that seems correct i got it insane. like Because it cause the yeah back the it was like, yeah, it was likeot like carts. It wasn't like you couldn't, you didn't have like an NES.
01:00:30
Chris Prime
Onboard solder.
01:00:31
Zach Sheets
Yeah. yeah
01:00:33
Chris Prime
No. you You definitely... Because it wasn't like they were bootlegging the mold. That was around the end of the GameCure in 1995.
01:00:44
Chris Prime
So... You didn't... You didn't have factories manufacturing the shell. You know what i mean? like
01:00:54
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
01:00:55
Chris Prime
It took a long time for the Game Boy to get a bootleg where they were kind of loose on the pattern and whoever was fabricating the mold.
01:01:06
Chris Prime
That's why it takes a while for any of these pirators to get their hands on the 3D model. It's getting faster and faster over time because now people can reverse engineer with 3D printing and stuff, like a scan and then get like the dimensions and scale it right.
01:01:24
Chris Prime
But back then, you pretty much had to like break into a factory steal the master mold. And then find your own plastic factory, print a bunch of them, and make sure that all the workers who are hand-printing them aren't turning around and just ratting on the factory. Because they give you reward back then if you rat on them.
01:01:44
Chris Prime
It's the same thing when like Pepsi like gets a call from someone that stole the formula from Coke. You know what mean? Like, they're just not going to be okay with that.
01:01:51
Zach Sheets
yes
01:01:53
Chris Prime
They're like, oh, thanks for telling us. All right, well, arrest this guy.
01:01:57
Zach Sheets
yeah or i wonder if someone was just like thinking you like well they they probably had the same like knockoffs they had like now right where it's all built in
01:02:06
Chris Prime
Back then? no
01:02:07
Zach Sheets
no yeah
01:02:10
Chris Prime
And that's how thinking that now. But back then, no, that didn't exist. They didn't have that built-in station until maybe the 2000s.
01:02:20
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
01:02:21
Chris Prime
Even then, like I remember the dark age of the bootleg stations and the but like lawyers could sue a lot faster back then. Because there weren't a lot. But now the market's so flooded that it's hard for them track down.
01:02:39
Chris Prime
And especially repro stuff, like at that age, that's like prime retro game. like Before it was retro. Those are like prime pixel, like 16-bit to 32-bit processing games. Those were the prime years. So they would go after them, like right on the spot.
01:02:58
Zach Sheets
is
01:02:58
Chris Prime
Now, someone trying to make a bootleg system that has those, they're like, eh, we'll get it if it gets a certain level. If they're like the companies getting cocky and making commercials, yeah, they come after them.
01:03:11
Zach Sheets
Yeah, i I think it's probably just like someone had someone had Jackie had a Game Gear or someone had a Game Gear just like e here this will put this in the movie. I don't know.
01:03:21
Chris Prime
Yeah, because it doesn't make sense to include that and then have it not be any sort of like marketing tie in because I'm pretty sure Sega would appreciate it if they had a name drop or something.
01:03:32
Zach Sheets
Yeah, it's those Surf Ninjas.
01:03:36
Zach Sheets
It's like the Game Gear was like the de like the driving factor of the plot.
01:03:42
Chris Prime
and then somehow it was the kid's special power was he was a prophet. So we can get into that topic and all the time. but It's not like the diamonds in the movie was not hidden in the Game Gear.
01:03:55
Zach Sheets
That would have made more sense if like...
01:03:56
Chris Prime
That would make way more sense.
01:03:57
Zach Sheets
the they They were smuggling in smoking anything like game gears. they like like It's like Home Alone 3 where it's like they put it inside the toy. like, oh, yeah got get that we got to get the game gear back.
01:04:09
Zach Sheets
That kid has the diamond one.
01:04:12
Chris Prime
Yeah, it gets lost. as I don't know which one. Danny thinks it's his, but that's not the right one.
01:04:16
Zach Sheets
like, Kyung, this game gear doesn't work. And he opens it up it's like, oh my god, there's diamonds in here.
01:04:20
Chris Prime
It keeps...
01:04:25
Chris Prime
Just keeps shaking it, and it's just like, oh, no.
01:04:29
Zach Sheets
There's something rattling in this game gear that you gave me.

Conclusion and Future Topics

01:04:34
Zach Sheets
Anyway, yeah, Rebel the Bronx, still awesome. Still one of so one of the best Jack and Jack movies.
01:04:40
Chris Prime
Yeah, it holds up in fun stunts. I think the plot is sort of forgivable because you're not really seeing it for the coherent story. because it it The first two acts are its own thing, and then it ramps up into a crazy like third act that involves like international thieves and and then like a criminal empire that just seems like it's only concerned in the Bronx.
01:05:06
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah, think we were saying like like, the whole movie could have been, like, kind of a build-up, like, like Jackie keeps getting hassled this gang, and, like, the the finale is, like, he finally takes them down and, like, you know, makes them stop.
01:05:06
Chris Prime
And then like the police finally get involved.
01:05:21
Zach Sheets
That have been the whole movie.
01:05:24
Chris Prime
But i think that I think that a lot of other movies sort of did that.
01:05:24
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
01:05:28
Chris Prime
So this was like trying something new. But it just it' sort of falls flat for that new plot. like It's very unfamiliar to Jackie at that point.
01:05:40
Zach Sheets
but yeah still uh if you want to check it out we watched again for its uh 30th anniversary it's definitely i think i don't know if it's streaming free anywhere right now but you can find it a bunch of places suppose i'm surprised there's not like a like a release or anything of it yet I feel like you like arrow or like someone should be getting on that.
01:06:00
Chris Prime
and There have been like collector DVDs, but yeah it really needs like a better edition of this movie.
01:06:06
Zach Sheets
We need like a, like a criterion collection version of it. We got criteria did like the police story. So they get, they can get on that.
01:06:16
Zach Sheets
But yeah, so that'll do it this week. Come back next week, we'll be diving into the Monster Squad because we you know we're getting the Bride or like the Bride Explanation Point in theaters next week, which is taking you know the Frankenstein's monster and the Bride of Frankenstein to the thirty s But Monster Squad brought all the monsters into the 80s. So we'll be talking about that next week. Also, we'll also be paying tribute to Tom Noonan because he recently passed away. He played Frankenstein in that movie.
01:06:48
Zach Sheets
So come back for that. Head to the site. We all have our usual stuff. We've got news, reviews, trailers. If you want more Jackie Chan, we watched Panda Plan for our monthly commentary. That's the site right now. You can sync that up to Panda Plan on Tubi or wherever can find it and watch it along with us.
01:07:05
Zach Sheets
If you want to go from like like one of Jackie's classic movies to one of his like most recent recent movies, because Panda Plan was like two like two years ago,
01:07:15
Chris Prime
Also, he doesn't get showered in glass in this new one.
01:07:18
Zach Sheets
No.
01:07:19
Chris Prime
Actually, a lot of Jackie getting like injured is less and less, but it's it's crazy to think that in the old days, it's like Jackie Chan had a movie where someone got thrown into like a mulcher.
01:07:23
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
01:07:31
Chris Prime
But in this in the Panda Plan, like no one dies.
01:07:37
Zach Sheets
Nope. And then, yeah, it definitely leads more in the comedy section than the action section. like yeah The action comedy ratio is definitely more toward comedy. And you can get ready for a Panda Plan 2, which is apparently this year. Where Where i Jackie and the panda are going to like find like a lost tribe somewhere somewhere for some reason. I don't know.
01:08:05
Zach Sheets
And then, yeah, just head on to the site, check out all other stuff out there as well. And, yeah, so Chris, I'm Zach, and we will see you next week.
