This week on the Everything Actioncast, Zach and Chris head to the fog-covered streets of 2006's Silent Hill as Return to Silent Hill is out in theaters.

Directed by Christophe Gans, Silent Hill mostly tries to adapt the first game in the long-running video game series, but pulls in elements and creatures from other installments.  Radha Mitchell stars as Rose Da Silva, whose adopted daughter, Sharon (Jodelle Ferland), is sleepwalking and experiencing visions of Silent Hill.  Discovering it's a ghost town in West Virginia, Rose attempts to take Sharon there, but an accident with a motorcycle cop, Cybil Bennett (Laurie Holden), results in Sharon going missing and Rose forced to explore the creepy, fog-enshrouded streets of Silent Hill, facing dangerous creatures, including the game's iconic baddie Pyramid Head (Roberto Campanella).  Meanwhile, Rose's husband, Chris (Sean Bean), attempts to find out where Rose and Sharon went and digs into Sharon's past.  Zach and Chris discuss the Geocities-style website that leads Rose to Silent Hill, Cybil immediately leaping to the conclusion that Rose kidnapped Sharon, the fantastic creature design and atmosphere, try to figure out what the hell Silent Hill: Ascension was, and more.

You can watch Silent Hill on AMC+/Shudder.  Next week, we're discussing the 2011 Jason Statham movie The Mechanic, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary, and a new Statham movie, Shelter, is hitting theaters.

Introduction and New Film Anticipation

00:00:19
Zach Sheets
Hello and welcome to the Everything Action Cast, the podcast week of January 19th, 2026. I'm your host, Zach.
00:00:26
Chris Prime
I'm your co-host, Chris.
00:00:28
Zach Sheets
And this week we are heading back to the fog-enshrouded streets of Silent Hill and talking about the 2006 movie. Because actually, believe or not, there's a new Silent Hill movie in theaters right now, Return to Silent Hill, from the director of the first Silent Hill movie, Christoph Gans. He is back. He wrote and directed this new one.
00:00:48
Zach Sheets
we have, neither of us have seen it yet because we're recording this regular, I think on like preview night. Uh, early reviews are saying it's not that good,
00:00:57
Zach Sheets
but we'll, I guess I might, I might try to see it maybe at some point. I don't know if in theaters, but yeah.
00:01:01
Chris Prime
I'll watch it. I feel like we're both kind of interested in seeing another video game moving that isn't like good for kids.

Evolution of Video Game Adaptations

00:01:10
Chris Prime
But yeah, like typically Silent Hill movies don't do well with general audiences.
00:01:17
Zach Sheets
And we are we are in kind of like a renaissance of, you know, video game stuff is actually good now, like adaptations. You know, we got Fallout, we got The Last of Us, we got even like a Minecraft movie last year, Sonic movies,
00:01:32
Zach Sheets
cat like and Netflix.
00:01:35
Chris Prime
I argued that Tetris movie was pretty decent.
00:01:39
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I mean, not, again, it's not really, yeah, it's not an adaptation of the story of Tetris. I guess the background history historical version of Tetris. It'd be weird if that was like a, you know, someone tried to make like a story based on Tetris.
00:01:51
Chris Prime
I'm surprised they're me like a Tetris RPG game. The movie.
00:01:54
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:01:56
Chris Prime
Tetris, the movie, the game.
00:01:58
Zach Sheets
But yeah, 2006 Silent Hill was i mean that was in the just like the absolute dreck era of video game i mean we were it was in like I think the Resident Evil movies, they were up to two, I think.
00:02:16
Zach Sheets
Resident Evil are schlocky fun, but then there's also like a lot of like other terrible video game movies coming out around this time.
00:02:26
Chris Prime
Oh, like even a little bit after. In this era of 2000s video game adaptation, think it was like, what? Alone in the Dark came out, I think, a few years before this.
00:02:34
Zach Sheets
Oh, yeah.
00:02:37
Chris Prime
Like a year or two after this was the Far Cry movie.
00:02:42
Zach Sheets
The same year of Silent Hill was Blood Rain and DOA.
00:02:48
Chris Prime
God damn.
00:02:49
Zach Sheets
And Doom was the year before. Alone in Dark was the year before. Postal was after the year after hit man it was the year after. year after.
00:02:58
Chris Prime
Here's the crazy thing. I've seen all these movies.
00:03:00
Zach Sheets
yeah, I think we've both seen all these movies. Yeah.

2006 Silent Hill vs. the Game

00:03:03
Zach Sheets
But i mean for I mean, for a while, I think probably still, like, I think the first style of movie is still, like, one of the best video game movies?
00:03:11
Chris Prime
Question mark.
00:03:11
Zach Sheets
Question mark? just By default?
00:03:13
Chris Prime
Like yeah, it won because like the average sunk it and it raised this, the score up. But if you're asking about like how close to the source material, it's like inspired by more than an and an adaptation or like it's a partial adaptation.
00:03:34
Zach Sheets
It nails the atmosphere and like the music and stuff like that.
00:03:39
Chris Prime
Mm hmm.
00:03:39
Zach Sheets
But yeah, the story is is like not, I mean, and it's the basic, basic gist of the story is the same as like the first game where it's like, oh, there's a missing daughter in Silent Hill. But then everything else is kind of like, we're doing our own thing.
00:03:52
Chris Prime
Yeah, I mean, I was opposed to, like, just the, the, like, character difference, because, like, I liked the first Silent Hill game, I liked that, like, blockiness, because I rented Silent Hill, and I i got killed a lot.
00:04:09
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:04:10
Chris Prime
This was, like, multiple rentals. I wasn't good at this game initially. Uh, but, Just like, that's what I was used to. So when they went with, like, the, like, hey, we're to play the mom this time.
00:04:26
Chris Prime
And you're like, I didn't think about the mom at all in the game. So this was a little different. And again, I got used to it. And and and then yeah you do rally for, uh, was it Radha...
00:04:43
Zach Sheets
Rodney Mitchell.
00:04:43
Chris Prime
Mitchell. Yeah, she she is really well like she she plays like a very concerned mother to the T.
00:04:44
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:04:52
Chris Prime
And it's just like kind of like circumstances that it's like a perfect 2000s like, I don't know, like investigated investigation movie that like someone with money and time can just go do.
00:05:10
Chris Prime
You know, i mean, like I can believe in the game that like a father and daughter, his adopted daughter go on like a holiday trip and crash. That's it. Like that's the beginning of Silent Hill. Where in this, they really draw out the like, hey like you're sleepwalking. And then they do all this like crazy scenario to get you to go to Silent Hill alone without taking your husband.
00:05:32
Chris Prime
You know, like it's it's like you don't do that today.
00:05:32
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:05:35
Chris Prime
That's why it's like, no, it's a very appropriate respond for the husband to be like, holy shit, where's my wife and kid?
00:05:43
Zach Sheets
I looked up Silent Hill like a GeoCities page and then we're driving there to go find it.
00:05:49
Chris Prime
I went online and Googled that like ghost towns of America dot web.
00:05:55
Zach Sheets
Yep.
00:05:55
Chris Prime
No one owns it. It's actually inspired by a real website called ghost towns like dot com, which has not been updated since 2018 and has all the like original designs and just like specs like that would only work on like a CRT monitor.
00:06:03
Zach Sheets
Hmm.
00:06:17
Chris Prime
and And like it it does has no accessibility or or like easy on the eyes. Like if you had to read this page and they have like a background. So like the words get lost between the background art.
00:06:30
Chris Prime
So you have to highlight it manually to see like the words.
00:06:32
Zach Sheets
Yep. Yep.
00:06:32
Chris Prime
Oh my God.
00:06:33
Zach Sheets
m
00:06:33
Chris Prime
It's it's so crazy. That's why I like. in in that fake website they have in Silent Hill, at least they like rebuilt it. They're like, we cannot like endorse this website. But it's funny that they were able to show Google because I think at that time, 2006, they're just like, do you even need to get licensing rights for Google? Like, does Google know they're in Silent Hill?
00:06:54
Zach Sheets
but it It is funny that that's like it's like it it is 2006 or whatever whatever yourre whatever year it is, but like that site is like such a 90s website. i'm I'm shocked like there isn't like an auto-playing like music like like thing on there too.
00:07:09
Chris Prime
I think around this time, this is when it's are those kind of trends are dying. And this is still like around HTML 2 or 3. So like this would take a long time to load to to on a browser.
00:07:23
Chris Prime
So it's funny that like in the movie, when when Chris awakens that laptop, like that site's still there. like She didn't even exit out.
00:07:33
Zach Sheets
Yep. Nope, yeah.
00:07:37
Chris Prime
anyway, technically, just it's funny that the website is had had everything she needed to get in there and photos and proof.
00:07:47
Chris Prime
She found like an unvetted website just because someone made a site because, hey, it's a ghost town. Come check it out. Centralia, which which is what this is based on. But for every reason, they said that it's West Virginia.
00:08:00
Zach Sheets
Yeah, and they're and they're they're driving from Oregon to West Virginia because they live they live in Oregon and and then they're driving all the way to West Virginia to like go to this ghost town.
00:08:07
Chris Prime
out there Ohio
00:08:09
Zach Sheets
I thought like like Kim Coates or like someone says, like oh, you have Oregon plates or something.
00:08:16
Chris Prime
thought it was Ohio but because it has to be within reason if it's Oregon that's like cross
00:08:18
Zach Sheets
maybe Somewhere. pretty Pretty far, yeah.

Critique of Plot and Character Decisions

00:08:23
Chris Prime
country but Ohio is maybe like a day
00:08:24
Zach Sheets
Yeah, that's like days of travel. Yeah.
00:08:31
Chris Prime
not a day, because I've driven Chicago from Jersey for like 16 hours, and I'd go through Ohio. It has be within reason that when Chris freaked out, he ended up at the border of West Virginia, of Silent Hill. So that's like, it's only like eight hours
00:08:48
Chris Prime
of using like MapQuest to get there.
00:08:52
Zach Sheets
Well, I do want to know where they i do want know where they live because they they live next to like, it looks like a South American jungle like waterfall quarry. like they like They live on the edge of this giant waterfall.
00:09:05
Zach Sheets
That like that Sharon almost falls into.
00:09:08
Chris Prime
like dives into.
00:09:09
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Because she's sleepwalking. She's having like the visions of Silent Hill. She's yelling Silent Hill. Silent Hill!
00:09:19
Chris Prime
Okay, so that's a less of calling to her, but did she expect her to call her into the quarry? Because if she died there, then what?
00:09:28
Zach Sheets
yeah what's what's the other game of that? If like if she kills herself in the quarry.
00:09:34
Chris Prime
Not only she gets resurrected back in the quarry.
00:09:37
Zach Sheets
It's like, oh i just I just met Cumbier.
00:09:37
Chris Prime
I mean, back in Silent Hill.
00:09:40
Zach Sheets
I didn't mean to throw yourself into the quarry.
00:09:43
Chris Prime
Like, in the game, she basically separates her, Alessa separates, the the equivalent of Alessa, like, separates her her soul into two parts so that her like trauma can live in Silent Hill and her like pureness can live outside of it.
00:10:00
Zach Sheets
Which, I mean, that's what it is here, too.
00:10:03
Chris Prime
Right, but like, it does make sense, but then it's like, if you're, if she died out there, then what? Then you're just, all the trauma version lives in there?
00:10:15
Zach Sheets
And then yeah and then like Silent Hill is just like under her... like It'll never escape her nightmare reign.
00:10:21
Chris Prime
But don't think she wanted to leave, because she just wanted to feel whole, I guess.
00:10:24
Zach Sheets
No.
00:10:26
Chris Prime
I mean, it in the game, it's not quite that. it It's like people want to awaken like a greater God, almost like a Cthulhu kind of like thing where there's a cult and like on top of like the crazy supernatural elements.
00:10:44
Zach Sheets
We should get into more in like the second movie. Yeah.
00:10:47
Chris Prime
Yeah, but like in the game wise, it was like, OK, like. but it's like the cult was like a second something else that's happening in the universe. This was like the cult started it and it happened. Like if it wasn't the cult that was going to start at the fire, like anything like like a loose barbecue was going to start that underground fire pit in that community.
00:11:14
Chris Prime
Like that was his own issue that I'm surprised the town didn't just move or like, uh, some sort of like geologist was just like, you you shouldn't build a, like a train system under this. You're all going to like explode if you like hit the dirt.
00:11:30
Zach Sheets
Yeah, cause because there's to there's toxic fumes. like there's the the regular The regular version of Silent Hill is you have to like wear a mask. like You can't like can't like walk around the the town for too long.
00:11:43
Chris Prime
Well, the fumes happened because of the fire that started because of the hotel.
00:11:45
Zach Sheets
fight Yeah.
00:11:48
Chris Prime
So, but like that fire from the hotel was a regular fire. It wasn't some crazy like, yeah, it wasn't like a blue flame that like burnt down into the basement into like the the like whatever subterranean level that hits the like natural like gas line in the in the county because like that started a fire that raged for like what seems like years.
00:11:57
Zach Sheets
Supernatural...
00:12:18
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:12:18
Chris Prime
And that's what happened in Centralia.
00:12:20
Zach Sheets
Well, Sanchalia is still burning. Yeah, it's still burning today.
00:12:23
Chris Prime
It's like underground. They just had to close down all the mine shafts and then just have it burn, fuel itself out. but like it's
00:12:30
Zach Sheets
never did. Because it's pure coal.
00:12:31
Chris Prime
Yeah, no, it's still...
00:12:33
Zach Sheets
It will never burn out.
00:12:35
Chris Prime
Unless they like invent some sort of crazy machine to like like basically Agent Ultron lift it out of the ground to like rip out the fuel source, but not like set itself on fire.
00:12:45
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:12:48
Chris Prime
I think all the toxic gas would come out then. Like, now we've got, like a new problem. But for Centralia, for, like, Silent Hill in that version, the fact that there's able to people that walk around, i guess, and, like, live in the surrounding communities, I guess the fire is, like, pretty good.
00:13:06
Chris Prime
Like, it's out, I guess. It's just all

Cult and Alternate Realities

00:13:08
Zach Sheets
Well, the fog-covered supernatural version of Sail Hill seems like you can like that's more that's less toxic than normal Sail Hill.
00:13:08
Chris Prime
the fumes, is all the ash.
00:13:20
Chris Prime
Yeah, they don't need to wear like a mask, but and all the people seem like they see.
00:13:21
Zach Sheets
matt Yeah.
00:13:26
Chris Prime
Are they going crazy because of like the evil or is it because they're just huffing Silent Hill fog?
00:13:32
Zach Sheets
Or there's or or there's like there's like a a crazy cult. They're fueled by like you know religious fervor.
00:13:40
Chris Prime
Well, I like how it's only the cult members that are still there.
00:13:43
Zach Sheets
Yes.
00:13:44
Chris Prime
which is, you don't really, it's all like, it's all monsters and then cult people. There's no like, I was just getting the mail and now I'm here.
00:13:53
Zach Sheets
yeah how do you How do you get like sucked into Silent Hill too? Because you know Kim Coates and Sean Bean just like drive there and they're like, yeah oh look, see there's no one here.
00:14:03
Chris Prime
So this movie establishes and then i think the games also later establish it that like, it has to, Silent Hill has to welcome you.
00:14:11
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:14:12
Chris Prime
It's like if it detects usually in the game, if you have some sort of like traumatic trauma or like you have some sort of connection to the the people of Silent Hill, it brings you in.
00:14:17
Zach Sheets
Trauma. Yeah.
00:14:25
Chris Prime
But if you're just lost or passing by I guess it's normal to you.
00:14:31
Chris Prime
Which I didn't mind like that. That makes sense. It's the nice dimensional rift. of I feel like it's not the only media that does that or a story. I feel like Stephen King kind of wrote something like this, but yeah, the mist.
00:14:44
Zach Sheets
I mean, the mist.
00:14:48
Zach Sheets
but That was like an another dimension. That was like, you know, different dimensions. That was like, the town gets covered in mist. The mist might, the mist might came from another dimension, but.
00:14:58
Chris Prime
So,
00:14:58
Zach Sheets
i do I do like, because the fact that there's like the you know the like normal and then the supernatural, there is some like cool artsy, like you know it's like Ronda Mitchell's running from one side of the screen, Chombeon's coming other side the screen, they kind of cross, and like he feels like a presence and stuff.
00:15:15
Zach Sheets
Like doors open, and it opens in the real world, and he's like, wait, what? The door opened.
00:15:21
Zach Sheets
So they're kind of like, cut they like lay on top of each other.
00:15:21
Chris Prime
Yeah, that was... Yep, I did like that. That was clever halfway through, to like... I mean, visually to the audience, like you could tell like what was happening. you know like it's the It's something where like I'm not sure in the end it was a shocking relevation, but it wasn't at this point. like You established rules.
00:15:46
Chris Prime
i mean we'll We'll get to it the end, but... I'm explaining that, like, well, my thinking is that, like, if they held off on the shocking ending.
00:15:56
Zach Sheets
that that is not explained or done anything with really in the second
00:16:02
Zach Sheets
movie. There's like a half-assed explanation in the second movie of like, oh, this is this is what happened.
00:16:07
Chris Prime
Yeah, I mean, I guess.
00:16:10
Zach Sheets
but back But back to the first one, this was this first one, i did I did find it funny before they get to Silent Hill, like how quick uh like Sybil the the cop is just like oh this this woman's like kidnapping this girl she just like immediately jumps to like you're kidnapping her
00:16:27
Chris Prime
Yeah, she's super suspicious for, like, a mom just, like, i guess, soothing her her upset daughter.
00:16:35
Zach Sheets
yeah like clearly like comforting her it's not like it's not like she's like abusing her or anything but he's just yeah I've had enough of this it's been a long drive
00:16:39
Chris Prime
Yeah, if she was just, like, shaking her, like, you shut up! You listen to me! It's just, like,
00:16:47
Chris Prime
if If she was waving the like picture that said Silent Hill or something that indicates she's going there and the Sybil's like, oh no, that's like off limits.
00:16:56
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:16:57
Chris Prime
But I guess like they they do hint that a lot of people go to Silent Hill and do like crazy stuff. So they're always on edge for outsiders who are coming in and obviously like not the same community but that that just means that tourism in that surrounding town sucks. like There's like reviews that are like, I just drove to get gas and the cop asked me if I'm going to go to that poison town.
00:17:24
Zach Sheets
Well, I think they mentioned the road is like the road is technically closed. Like, you're not supposed to go there.
00:17:29
Chris Prime
No, same thing with Centralia. it's like It's definitely like you go that you get within a certain distance and it's already flagged that
00:17:31
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:17:38
Chris Prime
you're trying to go there.
00:17:40
Chris Prime
I mean, if anything, they should have we really closed the road sooner.
00:17:44
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:17:44
Chris Prime
like Like a road leading to it. Or put like a better barrier. Because it's like one barrier to get into that town.
00:17:53
Zach Sheets
It's like that, it's like the bridge, you just you have to, you to cross that bridge.
00:17:56
Zach Sheets
And then, like, you're driving into the mountains. but But it's great crazy, like, like, civil like yeah, Sybil's suspicious, then she's, like, just, like, chasing them, then we get the crazy, like, car chase, where, like, but like Rose is like, I gotta wait for the cops!
00:18:13
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's not like Rose also had a gun in the car or something crazy, right? it's
00:18:18
Zach Sheets
Hmm.
00:18:19
Chris Prime
chief but She floors it because she's like, well, I don't like that cop. It's like, okay, well, you're now committing a crime. You were so desperate to go to this this place that you're breaking so many, like I guess, like things. like She's breaking her marriage. She's freaking out her daughter. She's outrunning a motorcycle cop.
00:18:44
Chris Prime
Yeah, and it seems like once she got there, she could have just, I don't know, not floored it.
00:18:49
Zach Sheets
Yeah, like, pull over and explain, like, hey, we're trying to get Silent Hill. Like, my daughter keeps, like... daughter has...
00:18:54
Chris Prime
Oh, yeah. But she's not explaining that to like, a traffic cop. I was saying, like, once you come in, like, turn around to her daughter and be like all right, like, honestly, what i did was bad.
00:18:59
Zach Sheets
ye
00:19:07
Chris Prime
Because all it's doing to put her like her mentally unstable daughter to even more of a crazy frenzy state.
00:19:13
Zach Sheets
Yeah, you can't you really can't explain to the cop, like, so so my daughter's having these, she's seat blocks, she's having these crazy visions, she keeps say yelling Silent Hill. so like we're So we're going to Silent Hill just to see if that like helps anything.
00:19:25
Chris Prime
So I could just like get let her out of the car and then just walk around.
00:19:28
Zach Sheets
Walk around, yeah. Yeah.
00:19:30
Chris Prime
Did you even bring like a mask? No, I don't believe in masks. She came in with like no supplies.
00:19:36
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:19:37
Chris Prime
They don't even have like a change of clothes or anything. I think they were just literally just going to go there and just like
00:19:43
Zach Sheets
Just be like, anything look familiar, Sharon?
00:19:48
Zach Sheets
Recognize anything? Are you cured now?
00:19:52
Chris Prime
Can you stop sleepwalking?
00:19:55
Chris Prime
And I think like... I'm not sure in the movie it it it explains how long they've had to kind of put up with Cheryl's like Sharon's like episodes.
00:20:07
Zach Sheets
Sharon's like,
00:20:10
Zach Sheets
it feels like it's it's but it's definitely been a while because they're like kind of like, they're like at the end of a rope of was like, it's like this is the last, this is like the last chance we have. Like I got to take her South Hill.
00:20:22
Zach Sheets
But then Sean Bean's like, we got to put her in like a mental institution. She needs like professional help.
00:20:27
Chris Prime
I mean, it sets it up but nicely. Like, it really does put her in a tight situation. And she really loves her daughter, clearly, but, like, didn't really have a plan.
00:20:37
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:20:37
Chris Prime
Besides, let me take it to this ghost town that I googled.
00:20:42
Zach Sheets
That is like, yeah, a toxic, a toxic burning wasteland.
00:20:46
Chris Prime
You know what's messed up, though? In 2026...
00:20:51
Chris Prime
Someone would do that. like Google something, see like at least four results on Google and be like, that's proof. Get in the car. We're going to this location.
00:21:02
Zach Sheets
Or just at ask like AIs like, hey, chat to QPT, how should I treat my daughters? She's sleepwalking having crazy episodes. What should i do
00:21:11
Chris Prime
She said she got this from watching K-pop Demon Hunter, so I should go to Korea. Okay.
00:21:16
Zach Sheets
Hmm.
00:21:17
Chris Prime
like as silly as that sounds, that's sort of what like Rose did. She just listened to her daughter, researched what her daughter said, sort of didn't tell anyone she's going, and then just went.
00:21:33
Chris Prime
So, I don't know. Is that good parenting or bad parenting?
00:21:38
Zach Sheets
I guess if it helped her daughter, it would it's a good Baratang. But it turns out to be you this like like insane nightmare. So I guess it was a bad Baratang.
00:21:49
Chris Prime
Again, in the game, Harry was just trying to go on vacation.
00:21:54
Chris Prime
And everything else was like a coincidence.
00:21:57
Zach Sheets
But yeah, there's but there's a bit there's a big crash after the the police chase, and then you know yeah Sharon disappears.

Sound Design and Atmosphere

00:22:03
Zach Sheets
It rose rose roses in like the the fog and shrouded south Hill world now.
00:22:10
Zach Sheets
And then kind of like starts what heads into town, and then we like starts like running into like all the the the crazy monsters of Silent Hill.
00:22:17
Chris Prime
I also think we mentioned how well the sound is in this movie. When I saw this movie theaters, yep.
00:22:21
Zach Sheets
Was it...
00:22:23
Chris Prime
Oh, let me finish this.
00:22:24
Zach Sheets
Was it... Yep.
00:22:26
Chris Prime
So I saw this movie theaters and i honestly think the sound mixing and the use of like noise and, and, and just like getting you ready for the scares was really well done.
00:22:39
Chris Prime
Like you feel the tension ramp up and then the horn shows up.
00:22:39
Zach Sheets
That's
00:22:43
Chris Prime
Ooh.
00:22:43
Zach Sheets
what I was going to say. The air siren is a brilliant thing. They have this movie. Whenever you hear that, you're just like, oh shit, stuff's going down now. It's going to get
00:22:53
Zach Sheets
And then the the way the world transitions into the even worse world, like the other world, or like Dark World, like that's such like an awesome like visual thing that they did in this movie. that like i think the games like copy the games that came after this copied it.
00:23:08
Chris Prime
So, years later, I think 2010, uh, Silent Hill Homecoming, like, perfectly encapsulated, like, it took so much inspiration from this movie.
00:23:21
Chris Prime
And some people didn't like Homecoming. I liked it. it's It's way more action-y than any other Silent Hill game at the time. Uh, if I remember correctly, it had, like, uh, like,
00:23:35
Chris Prime
melee focus, but like essentially like all the fears were just sort of dropped because the horrors were just, here comes a monster, and it's like, well, I budget how many weapons I use, so whatever was coming at me, just bludgeon it.
00:23:49
Chris Prime
You know, it's just like, whack, whack, whack, whack.
00:23:49
Zach Sheets
Mm-mm-mm.
00:23:52
Chris Prime
But just the like preparation, and then like when the story flips in and out of the different worlds was good. I think like,
00:24:02
Chris Prime
I don't know if any other game did that after. Because then people didn't like the, like, this is combat mode, this isn't combat mode. Because when it wasn't that world, like, you just can safely explore.
00:24:13
Chris Prime
But then when you heard the horn, that's when, like, okay, now you're in the combat zone.
00:24:17
Chris Prime
Like, when you when you saw the transition, now you could fight things.
00:24:21
Chris Prime
So I think they got away with it. They stopped doing that in, like, Silent Hill Downpour.
00:24:26
Zach Sheets
Yeah, i because I remember there was like couple there's a couple that were yeah like you like super combat heavy, and then they kind of like went back to like, now it's now it's scary again. You can't fight the monsters. You just have to run from them.
00:24:38
Chris Prime
Because I, okay, so i but I played the two combat heavy ones a lot, just because I was like trying to achievement hunt them.
00:24:46
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:24:47
Chris Prime
But Silent Hill isn't supposed to be that. Like, you're not supposed to be someone who's combat ready. You're always supposed to be average people caught in a situation that you you are trying to suppress and then the monsters come out to show like all the things you, your, your subconscious was trying to bury your like manifest itself.
00:25:11
Chris Prime
so if anything, anyone that enters it, it's on Hill that welcomes you inside, some sort of issue should be brought in.
00:25:20
Chris Prime
So for Rose, it should have been like some sort of monster about her husband, like, squabbling about like, you know, like, oh, you're putting our marriage in jeopardy.
00:25:30
Chris Prime
And that's why I called like I've called the plates, you know, or like I canceled the credit cards.
00:25:33
Zach Sheets
ye Oh, yeah, that was great.
00:25:36
Chris Prime
and sort of credit Some sort of credit card monster should have appeared.
00:25:36
Zach Sheets
yeah a
00:25:40
Chris Prime
Or just maybe a drawing of Sharon's like imagination.
00:25:40
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:25:44
Chris Prime
It comes to life.
00:25:45
Zach Sheets
Her drawings come to life.
00:25:47
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:25:47
Zach Sheets
<unk> it's like It's like weird, like, grand monsters.
00:25:52
Zach Sheets
But no, she kind of sees, like, the normal, like, typical Silent Hill monsters that were like, the previous... youre the previous all the games kind of came before the movie came out. There's like the, like the armless thing that shoots like the acid or whatever from its stomach.
00:26:06
Chris Prime
I think that's Sue?
00:26:10
Zach Sheets
Which I love in that scene where Sybil is chosen, is there. And I think this is what she's like, she catches up the rose like arrests her, like it puts her in handcuffs.
00:26:20
Zach Sheets
But then it's like,
00:26:21
Chris Prime
Yeah, she still has to follow the law.
00:26:22
Zach Sheets
But then this crazy monster shows up, but then she's like trying to like reason with it. It's like, hey, halt! Stop right there! Don't move! it's like Lady, it's an armless monster creature with no face and like a giant gash in its stomach that spits acid. I don't think it's gonna stop and listen to you.
00:26:40
Chris Prime
Listen, we don't know what West Virginian like communities are like. For all we know, that could just be like a leopard community nearby or just a very bad case of inner city drugs.
00:26:54
Zach Sheets
But like it like sprays acid on her helmet and she rips off. so then So I think, just take off her jacket and her helmet because it gets covered in acid.
00:27:02
Chris Prime
Well, then she transforms into like her video game costume.
00:27:06
Zach Sheets
Yep.
00:27:07
Chris Prime
Attire, yeah.
00:27:08
Zach Sheets
And then Rose gets away again.
00:27:11
Zach Sheets
i think before that was the, they were kind of like they're like coal monsters, kind of. They were just like, they're like burning, like, like a swarm of like burning, like,
00:27:22
Zach Sheets
like black dwarf kind of, they they're almost like, like they're like children, that like, like burning coal children.
00:27:30
Chris Prime
I in the okay so if I remember correctly in Silent Hill one in two there are like ghost kids like kind of like just mutated children that I think you really couldn't tell in Silent Hill 1 but in 2 in Japan they are like children more like to pick like zombie children but in America they're like this is too extreme so it's like make them to like brown blob cold monsters
00:28:00
Chris Prime
so it's a mishmash like you mentioned I mean, it's like only one scene you you see them and then they're just never brought up again.
00:28:08
Zach Sheets
Yeah, kind of kind of like it kind of levels up each... like it's like It's like a new monster, a new creature, and it's like every new encounter is a new creature. And so you get to you know the big guy, Pyramid Head.
00:28:21
Chris Prime
is not supposed to be like a stalker monster. It's supposed to he's supposed to be a, like a judgment, uh, like figure that is not is like a nonpartisan you know it's supposed to be like the entity that oversees the like who gets to abuse the power and like how much of it or like if it senses that it's misused like it will act upon it to kind of correct it that's a that's at least like
00:28:32
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:28:58
Chris Prime
the Silent Hill 2 original lore. And then it sort of gets changed per depending on what game needs it.
00:29:12
Zach Sheets
He's
00:29:15
Chris Prime
But generally it's expected that Pyramid Head is not supposed to be like a... Like Yeah.
00:29:21
Zach Sheets
not like a nemesis. He's not like Resident Evil.
00:29:22
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:29:23
Zach Sheets
He's not just following you and trying to kill you. Yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:29:26
Chris Prime
Well, if he is, if he senses that you're not not a change, like if you're just sort of you come in, you're like, I don't need, like, I'm awesome.
00:29:30
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:29:33
Chris Prime
and It's going to be like, oh, oh, you didn't just come to Silent Hill and bring that energy here.
00:29:39
Zach Sheets
but and the movie In the movie, he's he's just like yeah he has just like a giant like he's just like you know a giant stalker monster. His big scene is like he like tries to stab them through a like he steps to a door with his giant sword and tries to like stab them in this like industrial room.
00:29:53
Zach Sheets
And just they're like i just barely like are out of his reach.
00:29:57
Chris Prime
It's interesting because like the mom character is like very innocent. She just wants to like help her daughter.
00:30:05
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Yeah.
00:30:05
Chris Prime
She didn't commit anything that the monster's like, you, you have sinned.
00:30:11
Zach Sheets
Yeah, there's so there's no like there's a like twist or revelation of like, you did this and you did this in the past, Rose. You shouldn't have done that. It's like, no, she adopted this little girl. She loves the little girl. She's trying to find a little girl.
00:30:23
Chris Prime
Yeah, that's why i couldn't figure out like, I thought I a lot of people said like it. It should have been that the pyramid hedge is like more of a background guy kind of dishing out judgment than it is a. Just like a one scene like, OK, now you face the pyramid head and OK, bye bye now, like the horn, my my shift's over.
00:30:44
Zach Sheets
Yeah, because he disappears when the when everything shifts back. And then then he only shows up for like and one more scene. like he's like you know He's outside the cult's temple.
00:30:53
Chris Prime
But that makes sense for that part. Because he's like the cult sort of like needs trimming.
00:31:01
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Well, I couldn't figure it out

Character Dynamics and Pyramid Head

00:31:03
Zach Sheets
because there's... there's Was it Dahlia? Who's Alessa's mother? it kind of it kind of seems like she summons him to like appear. Yeah.
00:31:13
Zach Sheets
or like Or she at least like knew he like where he was going to show up, like appear on the steps.
00:31:21
Chris Prime
I get what you mean. Yeah. she Well, that's the thing. She's sort of outside of the typical like monsters. So she she's just able to be like something about her is not right.
00:31:34
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:31:35
Chris Prime
Which they do explain that she's basically like an entity, like a treated as an entity in this area in a weird, twisted way. But the cult is just like already just like, OK, you're not us.
00:31:45
Zach Sheets
Yeah, she's...
00:31:49
Chris Prime
So you're the enemy.
00:31:50
Zach Sheets
Yeah, you're outcast from the cult.
00:31:53
Zach Sheets
Because they also run to, like, Anna, who's, like, the first, like, cult member they find. And that's how they learn, like, lot information about, like, what's cool some of what's going on. And there's, like, the whole, like, they're in the hotel trying to, like, piece together all the clues.
00:32:07
Chris Prime
Thank you.
00:32:08
Zach Sheets
There's a lot of It's a lot of those movie is like like Rose has to go somewhere. It's i mean it's it's very it's very like true to the games where you have to go to a location, find it some sort of clue, or like an inventory item, then you have to go to the next location and like use that clue to get to the next spot in the Sound Hill.
00:32:26
Zach Sheets
She has to go to school. the She finds picture that says the school, so she has to go to school, and then the school has a... She finds a like key key fob or key thing for the hotel.
00:32:39
Zach Sheets
And so it's like, oh, I have to go to the hotel.
00:32:42
Zach Sheets
oh and that, the in the the school, we didn't talk about, the school bathroom scene, and that's insane. that That creature that's in like the stall. And she just reached her, the janitor, yep.
00:32:48
Chris Prime
Hmm. the The janitor, the pervert janitor.
00:32:52
Zach Sheets
And Rose just reached on his throat and pulled out like that hotel key thing.
00:32:57
Zach Sheets
there's There's a lot of like Saw hostile kind of... like Because I think those both came out before this movie came out. i feel like there's a little bit like that kind of going on too. A little torture-porny.
00:33:10
Zach Sheets
And definitely some Hellraiser stuff too. Where some of these creatures or designs are really... It's like Paydad did something to this person. like did something this person
00:33:21
Chris Prime
So was this the same year Saw came out? Or like...
00:33:24
Zach Sheets
feel like Saw was like 2004, maybe? Okay, 2004 came
00:33:34
Chris Prime
I say that because like none of it seemed like... so It looked like Saw... Places like Jigsaw would be like, I would love to set up a trap here in this industrial like building.
00:33:43
Zach Sheets
the first Saw.
00:33:44
Chris Prime
But Okay.
00:33:46
Zach Sheets
first saw
00:33:47
Chris Prime
Like, there should have been, like, a Saul-esque thing where, like, Rose had to put her hand in something, you know?
00:33:54
Zach Sheets
Well, she does. She does spit in his mouth. that's like it yeah just you You're saying like more traps or something.
00:33:59
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:33:59
Zach Sheets
Or the more challenges for her to like overcome.
00:34:03
Zach Sheets
But yeah, definitely the like industrial like version of Silent Hill is definitely like very Saw aesthetics. Like the grimy, rusty metal.
00:34:13
Chris Prime
yeah I just feel like you don't want to touch anything because can give you tentness.
00:34:17
Zach Sheets
Yeah, definitely.
00:34:21
Zach Sheets
But yeah, but but ye but Rose, she says she finds all the, she gets all these clues together. She finds the cult. and But then second the second pyramid scene is crazy because he shows up on the steps and like rips Anna's skin off.
00:34:38
Chris Prime
Oh, like one hand grab and toss.
00:34:40
Zach Sheets
hand just grabs her and rips her skin off.
00:34:46
Zach Sheets
And I think he's gone. he's like His last scene for the movie just like, all right, peace. I'm out of here.
00:34:52
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:34:53
Zach Sheets
I'll be back in the sequel.
00:34:56
Zach Sheets
And then they meet Christabella, who's played by Alice Krieg, the Borg queen herself.
00:35:05
Zach Sheets
And then she...
00:35:06
Chris Prime
I believe she was also... was in Aliens?
00:35:14
Zach Sheets
i mean, like tons of tons of Star Trek. I mean, she's like the Borg Queen, like multiple things.
00:35:21
Chris Prime
Okay.
00:35:22
Zach Sheets
I don't think i'll think she i know she wast only she was an alien movie or anything.
00:35:25
Chris Prime
I confuse her with like another character another character actor.
00:35:32
Zach Sheets
But yeah, but she she but she basically like kind of like lays out like the cult, and then you find out like she's like the crazy cult leader. She's like, they're bringing witches, or people i think they they think are witches. but trying It's it to stop the apocalypse, even though they're already in like a hellscape, throwing like a hell dimension.
00:35:53
Chris Prime
you're right. Alice Creed. Yeah, she's... a I forgot that's her. She was great in Star Trek. next cetera or The first contact?
00:36:05
Zach Sheets
I it was was it was it Nemesis?
00:36:07
Chris Prime
Nope, first contact.
00:36:08
Zach Sheets
Okay, yeah.
00:36:10
Zach Sheets
Yeah, oh yeah, because First Contact was all about the Borg. They were attacking the whole like B plot.
00:36:16
Chris Prime
It's funny because like years later she was in rain of fire.
00:36:21
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:36:22
Chris Prime
But her playing a crazy cult leader like she perfectly matches this role.
00:36:26
Zach Sheets
Yeah. it's very It's very Wicker Man. This whole cult is like very Wicker Man. We need to sacrifice these people to like burning them to you know ensure our whatever our beliefs are.
00:36:38
Chris Prime
Harvest.
00:36:39
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:36:40
Zach Sheets
and And then she she like agrees to help them, but then she sees a like but the picture of Sharon and Rose's locket and is like, Oh, it's Alessa! You're the mother of the devil! And then, like, instantly turns on him.
00:36:54
Zach Sheets
Because Rose has to go... they have to go into the basement of the hospital. It's, like, a specific room. That's where, like, the like that's where the evil's coming from.
00:37:03
Chris Prime
Which is weird that the cult knows. They're just like, okay, it's all concentrated.
00:37:06
Zach Sheets
is that we so yeah We don't go there.
00:37:09
Zach Sheets
and then And then Sybil has to, like, hold off the the cult, and Rose, like, takes the elevator down. And then they, like... brutally beat the like just beat down Sybil with like pipe wrenches there's like and like pipes just like smashing her.
00:37:24
Chris Prime
Oh, it's brutal.
00:37:25
Zach Sheets
it is yeah you it Just the sound of it. like You don't see them but you don't see like the like violence of them like you know hitting her, but you just hear the sound of the thing the smacking and stuff. It's like, oh man, it sounds that sounds bad.
00:37:36
Chris Prime
I get why she she didn't put up a fight. She's just sort of like, hey, haha, like, I got you.
00:37:42
Chris Prime
Like, it's a very cool scene, and then they just beat her up.
00:37:47
Zach Sheets
well she's got she's like she's like holding him off for like a bit and then he gets overwhelmed and then gets taken down
00:37:54
Chris Prime
Does she really hold them off? She sort of just, like, fires the gun.
00:37:55
Zach Sheets
little bit she shoots one of them maybe yeah cause think i think she fired in this into the air like a bunch of times before so maybe she just wasted her own bullets like she didn't get to the air
00:37:58
Chris Prime
No, she doesn't. She pulls the trigger and it's empty. just She did it to scare them.
00:38:11
Zach Sheets
And she shot she shot that like that armless monster like a bunch of times.
00:38:14
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:38:16
Zach Sheets
But yeah, but but yeah roa Rosa goes in the basement and then she meets like the other iconic group of monsters from the Sound Hill, the nurses.
00:38:24
Zach Sheets
Which, that's a really, like, good, like, tense scene where she just, like, walks through them. odd And they're not moving. like They could, like, possibly move at any moment. She just, like, make her way through them.
00:38:34
Zach Sheets
she figure She figures out they're only moving, like, lights happening on them. Or they're, like, attracted to light. Mm-hmm.
00:38:39
Chris Prime
Well, I think the cult member told her that they're attracted to the light.
00:38:44
Zach Sheets
But then... they still But then they so sometimes sometimes they move anyway, if they're like just even moving past them, or like they sense movement maybe or something. Because they start like slashing each other, they have to attack each other, then she like, Rosemary just like kind of like get out of there, but they're just like going hammering on each other.
00:39:01
Chris Prime
Yeah, the frenzy scene is pretty like crazy. In the game, they are attracted to noise. So I guess if you move, you do make some sound. And after that, it was just like motion.
00:39:14
Chris Prime
I guess the airwaves.
00:39:16
Zach Sheets
They do that in the second one. In the second handheld movie. They're attracted to noise.
00:39:21
Chris Prime
I definitely remember the... Was it like... four years after this, at least, Universal Horror Nights, where they had the Silent Hill theme and the nurses thing, where it's like, oh man, remember that scene? Now you can relive it.
00:39:34
Zach Sheets
Make your way through. but you Don't touch them. don't you can't touch They can touch you, but you can't touch them.
00:39:37
Chris Prime
Oh, do not touch that.
00:39:42
Zach Sheets
Oh, I don't know you mentioned either. like a lot of the creatures are like actual like practical. It's like either like people in costumes or you know some sort of like practical thing.
00:39:51
Chris Prime
Yeah, I do appreciate that they it's very like the CG's minimum for the settings and everything.
00:39:56
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:39:58
Chris Prime
if if any they It's a lot of sets and and like the CG makes sense for like crazy imaginative sweeping shots.
00:40:08
Chris Prime
But I do appreciate that because if this was Resident Evil, this would all be like one like so CG soundstage, like green screen.
00:40:17
Zach Sheets
But yeah, they got a guy playing Pyramid Head. They got a bunch of dancers whatever they are for the nurses. So they have actual practical creatures running around.
00:40:29
Zach Sheets
But but we get then we get to like to create like the big like the the giant exposition scene where rose Rose gets to that room and then she finds Alessa.

Alessa's Backstory and Revenge

00:40:40
Zach Sheets
like, you know grown Alessa who is like in a but like in a bed. She's like, you know, her skin's all burned. And then she like kind of telepathically reveals like the entire backstory.
00:40:52
Chris Prime
I think at this point Alessa is supposed be like 18, 20. Is
00:40:57
Zach Sheets
It's it's been whatever, however many years it's been. It's been it's been a while.
00:41:03
Zach Sheets
Oh, apparently Wikipedia says she was 30.
00:41:03
Chris Prime
that... Whoa.
00:41:07
Zach Sheets
So, it's yes, he's been there for quite a while.
00:41:10
Chris Prime
Okay, because there's certain parts about this that don't make sense. Okay, so... Kim Coates plays a a cop who saved Alessa when she was a kid.
00:41:19
Zach Sheets
Cop.
00:41:23
Zach Sheets
Yes.
00:41:24
Chris Prime
But Kim Coates looks exactly the same age.
00:41:27
Zach Sheets
Yep. You know
00:41:28
Chris Prime
From something that happened 20 years ago?
00:41:31
Zach Sheets
you know what's also crazy is, like, Kimco's is also not playing a scumbag. Like, it's it's like a a super rare, just like like, Kim Coates is like a normal, like, good person.
00:41:35
Chris Prime
He's playing like a good guy.
00:41:40
Zach Sheets
He's like a...
00:41:40
Chris Prime
I actually thought that the twist was he's in on it or something.
00:41:43
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Hmm.
00:41:45
Chris Prime
because it sort of leads into that. He's such a like calm sounding guy in this movie that I think at the third act, I think the reveal was like, oh, he's got a pocket Silent Hill portal or something and he dips in or or that like he's part of the order.
00:42:01
Zach Sheets
Hmm.
00:42:02
Chris Prime
But no, he's actually like a good cop.
00:42:05
Zach Sheets
he He just gets like annoyed at Sean Bean's constant like attempts. He's just like, hey, don't go look for that stuff. And he's like, you you look for the stuff. I told you not to. it looks cause like Because Sean Bean's often, he's sort like like speedli is like he's kind of like doing his own like detective investigation of like I'm going to go to the orphanage where Sharon came from, and I'm going to break into this building and find like the police records about the fire that happened.
00:42:33
Chris Prime
I mean, he's he did pretty well because he didn't just sit there and Google it.
00:42:37
Zach Sheets
Yeah, you need to go on GeoCities. Yeah, it's like, went to places.
00:42:43
Zach Sheets
I do like to i do like the the kind of the, how they do like the old school, it's kind like, it's like, whatever, like 35mm film or something for like the flashbacks.
00:42:52
Chris Prime
But see, like, how old like... but like The incident, like 30 years ago from 2000. two thousand It's like modern day, too.
00:43:05
Zach Sheets
1974 is when it happened.
00:43:08
Chris Prime
See, how old is Kim Coates then?
00:43:10
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:43:12
Zach Sheets
Whatever he's doing for like his like skin routine or something, it was working.
00:43:15
Chris Prime
mean, his hands are burnt because he was there. That's why it wasn't like, OK, it wasn't like his father.
00:43:18
Zach Sheets
Yeah. no
00:43:20
Chris Prime
He sort of just looks like him.
00:43:22
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:43:24
Zach Sheets
I don't get it because they weren't really, they weren't really doing like digital de-aging yet in movies. So they just said like Kim coats and then kim like no changes. They made maybe like his hair was different in like the flashback or something, but
00:43:37
Zach Sheets
it's like i remember when when I was a young man, saved this girl.
00:43:42
Zach Sheets
And then I guess what happened is like they, Like, so Alessa survived. She was, like, horrifically burned, but she somehow survived. And then they brought the hospital. But then her she basically, like, she turned her rage into, like, the power to, like, turn Silent Hill into, like, the you know nightmare realm. And so she transformed everyone in town who was left into, like, they trapped them in, like, the fog-shrouded, dark version of Silent Hill.
00:44:09
Zach Sheets
But then she split off like we like wait which before like she split off like her like the only like the last of her her goodness into Sharon as a little baby and then like then left her at the the orphanage.
00:44:21
Chris Prime
which orphanage is sort like, yeah, we just do that. Like from the neighboring town, we just take in the kids.
00:44:29
Zach Sheets
Yep.
00:44:31
Chris Prime
But like they didn't disclose that in the adoption. They're just like, here you go
00:44:36
Zach Sheets
It's like, yeah, it's like, father, unknown, mother, unknown, name, unknown, and for birth's birthday, unknown
00:44:45
Chris Prime
I don't know the adoption process works, but I'm pretty sure when. Like Chris had to like retract down where Shannon was adopted, but because it was like kept in that like storage locker, like whatever, like the. the The file record thing. So for him to like find the evidence of where he got his adopted daughter from was weird.
00:45:06
Zach Sheets
what Well, didn he he went to the orphanage, I think he knew where they adopted her from, but then the sister there was like, I'm not telling you, I can't tell you anything, anything i'm not telling you like about like where we got where she came from.
00:45:18
Zach Sheets
and then he kept coaching, he was like, hey, stop bothering his sister, like get out of here.
00:45:25
Zach Sheets
But then that's when Chris was like, oh, well, I'm going to go break into the city records or whatever, and find the Silent Hill records.
00:45:35
Chris Prime
which they did not keep those records well. It was just like on a pile. And he spent like, I don't know, a day going through it.
00:45:42
Zach Sheets
and're all they're And they're all just yeah it all as they're burned, too, because they were in the town when it burned.
00:45:49
Zach Sheets
But yeah, we get so we but we yeah we get all the we get the entire backstory, and then we find out Alessa's ultimate plan is to... She's going to... but her put like her so spirit or like her powers into Rose because then Rose can walk into the church because Elisa can't go into the church because of like whatever powers this the cult has or something. There's a barrier up.
00:46:12
Zach Sheets
But then Rose can can go into the church and like then they're like oh unleash her against the cult and like kill them all.
00:46:18
Chris Prime
It was a gambit that it would work because what if the church didn't hurt her? And then it's like, well, I'm going to go throw up in the corner now so Alessa can show up.
00:46:28
Zach Sheets
Yeah, what's the what was the plan to get Aless out if, like, yeah, cause cause because Christabella stabs Rose as as, like, a heretic of, like, get out of here, you witch! And then, but then the blood is, like, so when it starts coming out, it's, like, Aless, like, comes out.
00:46:44
Zach Sheets
it's It's hilarious, like, she's still in her bed. Like, she's still in like, a hospital bed, like, floating in the air.
00:46:49
Zach Sheets
Because cause cause like it seems like she unleashed her full power, would some sort of different form. But it's just her in her bed.
00:46:58
Chris Prime
Yeah, I mean, she's bedridden. she's Whatever, like, 1974 skin graft technology was just terrible.
00:47:08
Zach Sheets
And this this also this is when the movie goes like full Hellraiser to it, because she uses razor wire to kill everybody.
00:47:14
Chris Prime
Which was cool. I think in the movie theater, I run the movie theater i was in in high school, which was sort of like, whoa. And i I like the visuals. I like how creepy it was. i like that,
00:47:25
Chris Prime
This is the kind of ending for the cult members that you root for the bad guy for.
00:47:33
Chris Prime
and then just the visuals of the barb bar going up. The cult leader is like body. hoof
00:47:38
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:47:40
Chris Prime
Little girl dancing in blood.
00:47:40
Zach Sheets
Oh, we also did...
00:47:42
Chris Prime
Like, how is that not talk more about? This is like image of little girl dancing in blood.
00:47:47
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Oh, we we also did mention that Sylvia gets burned alive. I mean, you see, like, the full... You see, like, her full, like, skin just burning off, too.
00:47:56
Chris Prime
that that made That really did make us cringe in the theater.
00:47:56
Zach Sheets
So... so
00:47:59
Chris Prime
just like o well like Not cringe, but just like reek. like Just because it's so realistically depicted slowly.
00:48:07
Zach Sheets
yeah not not Not a fun movie for Sybil. Everything happens to her. All the worst stuff happens to her.
00:48:18
Chris Prime
She was just trying to do her job.
00:48:19
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Well, I mean, if she hadn't been so suspicious about this mother and her daughter, she would have been fine. But she had to chase them into the ghost town.
00:48:32
Zach Sheets
and yeah yeah Yeah, so yeah, Lessa kills everybody, and then Rose Sharon leave.

Ending and Sequel Setup

00:48:38
Zach Sheets
they They're able to finally leave Sound Hill, but then the big reveal at the end of the movie is that they're they're not back in like reality yet. They're still in like the fog.
00:48:48
Zach Sheets
like The fog dimension follows them home, so they're in like the fog dimension of like their their house.
00:48:54
Chris Prime
Well, guess like because
00:48:58
Chris Prime
Shannon is now back, Sharon is back with like the the main body. with a What's the name of the daughter? like The original daughter?
00:49:09
Zach Sheets
Alessa?
00:49:10
Chris Prime
Alessa, yeah. Now that Alessa is whole, her power can be extended outside of the boundary, I guess?
00:49:16
Zach Sheets
I guess so, yeah.
00:49:19
Zach Sheets
And then it's like, Sean Bean kind of senses them, but then he's just like, oh, were they here? Or were they dreaming that? And then that's kind adds on that ambiguous note of like, will they ever get back? And then the sequel was like, well, Sharon did somehow.
00:49:35
Chris Prime
Somehow she left and just totally forgot about like what happened.
00:49:41
Zach Sheets
It was like, it's like, it there's, there's a crazy scene in the second one where, Sean Bean looks in the mirror, which I'm also shocked that Sean Bean came back, came back for the second one.
00:49:50
Chris Prime
And like more than a cameo role.
00:49:53
Zach Sheets
i mean, it's a,
00:49:54
Chris Prime
i It's it's yeah limited, but it he's in it more than you think.
00:49:59
Zach Sheets
It's also wild that, like, it's two movies where Sean B doesn't die.
00:50:05
Zach Sheets
like he's it Like, he's in... Because, no you know, normally it's either he dies or he's evil or he's both. And he, like, he lives through Silent Hill and Silent Hill Revelation.
00:50:16
Zach Sheets
But yeah, but there's a scene where, like, he's he's looking into a mirror and then Rose appears in the mirror and, like, kind of just explains, like, this, like, half-assed, like, Oh, i i you know i I'm stuck here still, but I was able to get Rose, I got Sharon out through a portal somehow.
00:50:29
Zach Sheets
so But you have to those protect her.
00:50:34
Zach Sheets
I can't come back.
00:50:37
Zach Sheets
which so It's also crazy that Rod Mitchell came back for literally one scene in the revelation.
00:50:43
Chris Prime
Yeah, she just got a paycheck and was like, well, I'm out of here.
00:50:47
Chris Prime
mean, if you want to mention Relevation, like, I guess, like, its connection to the cult and stuff, but honestly, like, no one remembers it.
00:50:59
Zach Sheets
No. i think i think the main thing about this this is the second one that people remember is probably like the like the pyramid fight at the periodhead fight the end, where he like fights the like fake Cenobite carrion moss.
00:51:12
Chris Prime
Another thing is that like the in the second movie, the the budget for casting goes up because it's way more Hollywood famous people than you think it's going to be in that movie.
00:51:23
Zach Sheets
Yeah, yeah. but Malcolm McDowell shows up for a scene. you got Yeah, you got... Carrie and Moss and then like young Kit Harington shows up
00:51:33
Chris Prime
I'm surprised Kim Coates didn't come back.
00:51:36
Zach Sheets
and I also like in the second one too like they try to do they try like retcon in like the Harry Mason stuff because it's like they're like Sean Bean is in is going under the alias of Harry Mason
00:51:48
Chris Prime
Yeah, I mean, I didn't mind it for the retelling to sort of like, OK, let's knock out Silent Hill 3 stuff and and sort of like get to Silent Hill.
00:52:02
Chris Prime
think like Silent Hill when the Silent Hill renovations came out, what, 2012? No. twelve
00:52:09
Zach Sheets
Yeah, Revelation was 2012. yeah, six years between movies.
00:52:13
Chris Prime
Oh my God. So like at that point, Homecoming stuff was in because think there's like a monster in Relevations from Homecoming.
00:52:21
Zach Sheets
i Maybe. i know there's like weird, like the ending has like two weird setups for like characters from, it's like Travis Grady from with Origins.
00:52:31
Chris Prime
Origins.
00:52:32
Zach Sheets
And then it's the, like, but like like The prison bus like drives in Silent Hill, so that's Silent Hill Downpour.
00:52:39
Chris Prime
Downpour that came out like that year.
00:52:42
Zach Sheets
Yeah. It's just like, hey, you know these, here's setups for future things, maybe.

Silent Hill's Media Legacy

00:52:49
Chris Prime
And then for a while there was like no Silent Hill.
00:52:54
Zach Sheets
I mean, only the only live action thing we've gotten since before this new movie is the, what was it? Was that live action was that cg like The Ascension or whatever that was? The TV show?
00:53:05
Chris Prime
What was that?
00:53:07
Zach Sheets
There was the Silent Hill Ascension.
00:53:12
Chris Prime
No, that was a video game.
00:53:15
Chris Prime
That was like an interactive, like seasonal video game.
00:53:15
Zach Sheets
But but it was it was like it was like CG. It was like a live action thing, was it?
00:53:23
Zach Sheets
Okay.
00:53:24
Zach Sheets
Like Resident Evil CG movies style?
00:53:26
Chris Prime
Yeah, i I remember right. It was a premium, like you had to buy like a pass to play episodes. And I think it was only on like.
00:53:39
Zach Sheets
Was it on like the PlayStation's weird, like, what is it now?
00:53:39
Chris Prime
PS4 or.
00:53:40
Chris Prime
or
00:53:44
Zach Sheets
It's like Core.
00:53:47
Zach Sheets
There's a like video streaming service on PlayStation. It's like Sony Core or something.
00:53:55
Chris Prime
that's what it was
00:53:56
Zach Sheets
i think i think it was yeah I think it was like whatever. it was it was like a weird, like that streaming service only or something.
00:54:04
Chris Prime
so it was a TV show I don't know like how you if you voted at the end of things
00:54:04
Zach Sheets
Or it was it was like a or it was like mobile it was like a mobile thing too. and You could like watch it, like yeah like a download the app and like watch it or something.
00:54:17
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I think there was, it I'm looking at the screenshots now. There's like, it was like three choices at the bottom and then the audience watched, you could watch it like live quote unquote. And then you could like vote and like what this happens.
00:54:30
Zach Sheets
But then there was...
00:54:30
Chris Prime
it was like a Yeah, it was like a choose-your-own-adventure, but like you had to pick like the community adventure.
00:54:32
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:54:35
Chris Prime
is I can't believe Bad Robot Games made that, too. Yeah,
00:54:39
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:54:40
Chris Prime
it was like nothing. You can't even watch it anymore. i don't know what like any of the archive thing is anymore.
00:54:46
Zach Sheets
i feel like you I feel like it's the it's streaming somewhere, because i it pops up on my Google TV as a recommended of like, hey, watch Silent Hill Ascension.
00:54:54
Chris Prime
Oh, you can watch the whole thing now on Tubi.
00:54:56
Zach Sheets
Okay, yeah, that's that's where I saw it, yeah.
00:54:59
Chris Prime
But I think people, it's like not good because it's...
00:55:03
Zach Sheets
So it must be, the 2B version must be like just whatever choices that people chose, maybe?
00:55:09
Chris Prime
I'm looking it right now. Yeah, it's just sort of like the outcome to kind of coherently make the story.
00:55:15
Zach Sheets
This is the candidate version of the Silent Hill Ascension.
00:55:19
Chris Prime
i mean, we I can give it a shot because apparently it It did win a Emmy for outstanding innovation for just trying this concept of like everyone watching something together like a like almost like a Twitch stream thing. But but by today's standards, it's very antiquated.
00:55:38
Chris Prime
Because it's part of a series of the Genvid interactive series, which I've never heard of like again.
00:55:44
Zach Sheets
Yeah. That sounds like this like a like a tech companies NFT thing. it's like we're like we're doing We're in the GenVid space. We're innovating in the GenVid space.
00:55:56
Chris Prime
Yeah, I'm trying to see like what else this company made. Yeah,
00:56:01
Chris Prime
yeah like... Whoa, you could... Oh my god. They're getting into Gen.AI.
00:56:09
Zach Sheets
god
00:56:10
Chris Prime
And you could buy into the interactive AI-generated movie for $20 on Amazon and iTunes. I don't know what this means at all, man.
00:56:22
Chris Prime
Yeah, GenVid skipped interactive things. it went straight into AI slot making.
00:56:27
Zach Sheets
Yeah, Silent Hill was in a weird spot for a long time. Like for a while, it was like only like a Pachinko Machine theme.
00:56:36
Chris Prime
Yep.
00:56:38
Zach Sheets
But now, I mean, I feel like game-wise, we're in a renaissance because we had Silent Hill 2 Remake and last year. They're both super well-received.
00:56:48
Zach Sheets
This new movie doesn't seem like... that i mean but not They're not quite able to like hit that same quality up for still for movies, but maybe maybe someday it'll be a <unk> they'll be really like critically acclaimed Silent Hill movie.
00:57:03
Chris Prime
If they just rebooted it completely, just go back to the beginning, just make its own Silent Hill lore in the settings and sort of just bring in the original thing that made people examine sort of the horrors of humanity.
00:57:22
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:57:22
Chris Prime
i think that's fine because it's not like Resident Evil where it's like, you know, chemistry gone wrong.
00:57:30
Chris Prime
This is literally just like magic with bad intent that gets out of control. And then anytime someone with like questionable motives is welcomed in, those just get like worse.
00:57:47
Chris Prime
And somehow they have not figured how to make those movies.
00:57:50
Zach Sheets
Yeah. I mean, like we said, like this first movie definitely nailed some of the elements like, you know, creature design, atmosphere, music. just Just the the plot probably need to be like a little bit clearer or tighter than it would have been like a really, but I mean, it's it's still just by default, one of the best video game adaptations, but yeah.
00:58:12
Chris Prime
Winner because it didn't suck as bad.
00:58:15
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:58:16
Zach Sheets
I mean, it kind of it kind of sinks lower nowt like like like nowadays, because now we like every kind of new video game meditation is like pretty good now. So it kind of drops down the list a little bit. but
00:58:28
Chris Prime
i don't know. Let's see what this new Silent Hill says.
00:58:31
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Well, that one will probably... It's got to be hopefully at least better than like Revelation, right? I guess as we'll see.
00:58:40
Zach Sheets
But yes, I think that'll do it for this week. Come back next week, we're going be diving into a Jason Statham classic, The Mechanic. Because it's celebrating its, I think it's its 10th anniversary.
00:58:52
Zach Sheets
or is it 20th?
00:58:55
Zach Sheets
15th. I was totally off. But yeah, the 15th anniversary The Mechanic. And also, i believe there's a new Jason Statham movie next week, Shelter. So that also ties into that. because you know we're in January Statham time usually.
00:59:09
Zach Sheets
January, February.
00:59:11
Zach Sheets
we got the beekeeper. we got... What was the last year?
00:59:15
Chris Prime
Working man.
00:59:16
Zach Sheets
Working Man? Yeah.
00:59:18
Chris Prime
And it's crazy how they're not in the same universe. It's just like Jason Satham is now doing this. And they're not straight to DVD movies either.
00:59:26
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Well, shelter I mean, Shelter is like just the most stereotypical. It's like he's a he's a secret agent, like covert agent who like retired and is like trying to hide, but then to come back to protect a child.
00:59:37
Chris Prime
But he's basically just the beekeeper again.
00:59:39
Zach Sheets
Pretty much. Yeah.
00:59:41
Zach Sheets
but we yeah but Well, we'll talk about the time he was a took over Charles Bronson and it was like a a hit man training in there. Hit man.
00:59:50
Chris Prime
Not even another hitman. He's just a guy who was training.
00:59:53
Zach Sheets
who wanted yeah Who wanted to be the hitman.
00:59:56
Zach Sheets
So yeah, so come back next week for that. head of say ya We got a bunch stuff on the site. We got our news, reviews, trailers. Tons of trailers. i don't know what's going on, but we like it's been an absolute trailer dump. We got Masters of the Universe, Maul, Shadow Lord, Invincible Season 4, all kinds of stuff up there like that.
01:00:14
Zach Sheets
I also have a review of The Rip, the Netflix Ben Affleck, Matt Damon movie. If you want to read my review of that on the site, that's up there. And head over to check all of our other stuff out there as well.
01:00:25
Zach Sheets
And yeah, so for Chris, I'm Zach, and we will see you next week.

Outro
