So get in witches as we peel back the layers of chaos magic.

Edinburgh Experiences

00:00:47
Speaker
Did you guys ever do I really wanted to do this while we were in England and we never got the chance. But that street in I think it's in Edinburgh, but it's like underneath. And it's like a kind of a walkthrough of like an actual medieval street that would have existed because they built up on top of that street whenever they like redid it. And so like the whole like that street is super preserved and they've added things to it. So you can actually smell how bad it smell. And like all of these things, I would love to do that. We didn't do that, but we did a whiskey tasting that was in something similar. So there's this, um, it's like a hostel type hotel and you go there and check in at their front desk for the whiskey tasting
00:01:36
Speaker
And they take you down into like what is the considered the basement. But what happened was when they were renovating it to make it into a hotel and they started knocking down some of these walls to like see what was like in them.
00:01:50
Speaker
It was a fucking bank. And so they started looking into the history of it. And there was a bank down there and it had a door straight into the alleyway because that's just how they built things back then.
00:02:02
Speaker
And it got robbed like every week for like six months, the bank got broken into and robbed. And so they changed it from a bank into, um it like served as, um, what is it called? Like, why can't I think of the word? It's a very simple term.
00:02:21
Speaker
Like when people have to go to court and then they see if they're guilty or not, what the hell is that fucking called? What do you mean? Like a, Like a trial.
00:02:34
Speaker
um Now I'm blanking. It's like ah like a courthouse, right? Yeah, but it like back then there was a different term for it during like old times. I forget what it was called. I don't know.
00:02:47
Speaker
Yeah, they turned it into this thing where like people would have to appear and they would you know get sentenced or not. And then after that, because like it wasn't it was being used, but it wasn't being used enough,
00:03:00
Speaker
and the the jail was like overrun, they turned it into a jail. and it's just a room, right? Like it's literally just like an old bank room that they like fixed up as a jail and fixed up, you know, like for whatever they were using it for at the time. And then eventually they just walled it in.
00:03:20
Speaker
They walled the alley in, they walled the like jail in. like everything, this whole thing. So when they knocked it down, it was like all preserved behind the walls. And so now you go down there and you sit at the table that was originally in there and you do a whiskey tasting. That was like the closest that we got to something like that, but there were no stinky smells or anything like

Halloween Horror Nights

00:03:45
Speaker
that. It was just delicious.
00:03:47
Speaker
yeah Well, we should totally try it out. Yeah. I won't love the smells, I'll tell you right Me neither. Yeah. We did Universal in Florida for Halloween Horror Nights.
00:04:05
Speaker
And the year that we went, they did a um American Horror Story. little haunted house because you know it's so like a bunch of different haunted houses that you go through or whatever yeah and when we went through that one they set up the rooms had smells to them that would trigger memories from the show so like you know I think it's the first one like murder house yeah when he was like up in the attic with all the dolls and he's like the rose perfume from his mom you walked into that section and it smelled like dried roses like old roses yeah
00:04:41
Speaker
And then there was like so interesting. yeah and then there was like a section. There was like one of the episodes. I remember the episode, but I don't remember like what season it was from. But there was like this pig. They find this like slaughtered pig and they don't know who's doing it.
00:04:56
Speaker
And when you get to that, it smells like rotting animal, like rotten meat. Like and the whole thing, every room had a smell to it that would like trigger the memory of that episode.
00:05:11
Speaker
That is really interesting. i am like I feel like we have to try it. like just We need to know what like a um middle ages street smell like. You know what I mean? i just We have to do it. I just imagine poop.
00:05:29
Speaker
and but It probably, yeah it's going to smell like poop and urine and rotting meat. and probably hay. Like rat feces. Mm-hmm. Maybe we'll like bring like put some like pepper something underneath our noses.
00:05:46
Speaker
You know what I mean? To kind of help. Some peppermint oil or some Vicks something. Yeah. Like put it on top of some Vaseline. Yeah. To make it last longer too. Yeah.

What is Chaos Magic?

00:06:00
Speaker
I can't wait. Okay. Well, anyway. We're not talking about stinky streets. And trips. Or not. Although I could keep talking about this. Right. What are you talking about today?
00:06:14
Speaker
Chaos magic. This was not that I thought it wasn't going to be interesting. It was more interesting than I was expecting it to be.
00:06:25
Speaker
Same. Yeah. And then just like sitting there and I'm like, well, i feel like a lot of what we do technically be considered chaos magic. yeah So maybe I could...
00:06:38
Speaker
really research this a bit more. Yeah. Because I'm just like, that sounds like what I do. Like, it reminds me of like from the opit the office episode where like Kevin is like um trying to figure out like why that guy went to prison.
00:06:52
Speaker
and he's just like, I asked him a lot of questions because it sounds an awful lot like what I do every day. That's what I felt like. It was a lot too. When I first started researching it, i was like,
00:07:04
Speaker
So what is the difference between like eclectic and chaos? And then i like Googled that. And of course I talk about her on the podcast all the time because I use her YouTube videos all the time.
00:07:16
Speaker
Ivy Corbis had a fucking video. That's like, are they the same? No, they're not. Here's the differences. And I was like, Oh, you're amazing. Because I was like, well, now I need to understand the difference to be able to talk about that this. Yeah.
00:07:28
Speaker
Exactly. Yeah. yeah it's It's very interesting. Yeah. So I guess kicking off, let's go into a little bit of the background of Chaos Magic. um Chaos magic is a modern occult movement that is known for its radical departure from traditional magical systems.
00:07:46
Speaker
It emphasizes pragmatism, personal experimentation, and belief as a tool, which we're going to cover a lot. And you're going to hear this phrase a lot on this episode, belief as a tool, as opposed to the idea that ritual, dogma, or spiritual lineage are necessary for magical practice.
00:08:04
Speaker
Practitioners of chaos magic use whatever symbols, deities, or systems that serve their intent, even in some cases drawn from pop culture or entirely invented.
00:08:15
Speaker
And practitioners of chaos magic believe that we can craft our own reality. We can experiment freely and judge results based on effectiveness and not tradition. I was reading that it's also often called the youngest form of magic because it is like postmodern practice.
00:08:34
Speaker
And its foundational texts were only written like within the last few decades. It first took root in the UK during the 1970s, growing alongside the punk movement, which I thought was kind of cool and also very fitting.
00:08:47
Speaker
And just like punk, it came in loud. It was ready to shake things up in the magical world. And at the time, the occult scene was dominated by systems like Wicca, Thalema, and ceremonial magic that was rooted in Golden Dawn traditions.
00:09:04
Speaker
And these paths relied on ancient orders, formal initiations, and like really tightly structured rituals. Some even claiming magic wouldn't work unless you followed every step precisely.
00:09:18
Speaker
Chaos magic pushed back hard against that idea, basically asking like, what if magic didn't need any of that? What if like belief itself was a tool and anyone could use it?
00:09:30
Speaker
Early chaos practitioners were influenced by thinkers like Aleister Crowley and Austin Osmond Spare, but the practice really took shape through Peter J. Carroll.
00:09:42
Speaker
In the late 70s, he co-founded the Illuminati's of Thanateros and wrote Liber Newell and Psychonaut, which introduced core concepts like sigil magic, gnosis, and the idea that belief can be consciously shaped and discarded to serve your will.
00:10:00
Speaker
That idea was radical then, and honestly, sometimes it still is radical to some. Chaos magic challenged the gatekeeping of the magical world, and it opened the door wide, basically saying, you don't need to be initiated.
00:10:14
Speaker
You don't need a special lineage. You're already doing magic. You just haven't called it that yet, basically. In the 80s and ninety s chaos magic gained momentum through authors like Phil Hine, Robert Anton Wilson, and and Lionel Snell.
00:10:31
Speaker
And they emphasized a psychological experimental approach and the now like well-known pick and mix style essentially. So this is where you would pull from any magical system that works for you.
00:10:45
Speaker
It's not about traditions, it's about the results. And while many magical paths are deeply tied to spirituality, or even religion, chaos magic is not.
00:10:56
Speaker
It's not concerned with morality in the traditional sense either. Instead, it strips magic down to the essentials. So what actually works, what gets results, and anything else, whether it's rituals, symbols, or even beliefs, those can be changed, they can be borrowed, or they can be thrown out entirely.

Key Figures and Concepts in Chaos Magic

00:11:17
Speaker
ah My stomach keeps rumbling, guys. I am so sorry you can hear it. I tried having it on mute whenever you were talking, then I unmuted it. And then as soon as I unmuted it, my stomach was like, ah. So if there are any weird background noises, it's my stomach for whatever reason. I guess I'm starving this morning. I don't know why. I'm usually not hungry at this time.
00:11:37
Speaker
But um looking a little bit more into um Austin Osmond's spare, who if you if the name sounds familiar to you guys, we briefly discussed him back in episode 24 of Sigil Crafting. And we're going to you know reference episode 24 as well throughout the episode. But his work on sigils and the power of the subconscious mind really laid the foundation for chaos magic. And for Austin Osmond Spare's actual magic, it was characterized by the alphabet of desire, which was a symbolic system that focused on the subconscious mind,
00:12:12
Speaker
and how we can influence reality through our thoughts and beliefs, as well as, you know, again, sigil magic. um So if you want to deeper dive on that, go back to episode 24, but I'm going to briefly mention it again when we're talking about actual techniques for chaos magic. And then lastly, the Zoskia cultus, which was his personal magical philosophy that was a combination of practices focusing on accessing the primal source of human power.
00:12:41
Speaker
So with all of that in mind, let's get into the weeds of how chaos magic actually works. At the end of the day, this practice is all about doing. So experimenting, tracking what gets results, and then creating something that's personal and effective for you.
00:12:57
Speaker
It's less about doing things by the book and more about exploring what actually makes magic work in real life. Yeah. So when we look at the core principles and beliefs, according to Phil Hine, he was the author of Condensed Chaos.
00:13:13
Speaker
These are some of the basic principles of chaos magic. So one of the core values in chaos magic is a total rejection of dogma. There's no single way that things have to be done unless you're following a specific set of rules that actually helps you to get results.
00:13:32
Speaker
So like if that's the case, then sure, go for it. But the key idea is that you decide what works for you. um There's a complete reliance on personal experience as well.
00:13:43
Speaker
So if you want to get good at magic, you have to actually do it. And that might sound obvious, but it's important. Your practice might not look like anyone else's and that's okay.
00:13:55
Speaker
But like any skill, it takes discipline and consistency to grow. If something works for you, even if others say that it like it shouldn't work or it isn't possible, just keep doing it anyway.
00:14:07
Speaker
There's also a need to basically like decondition ourselves. So we're born into a world full of expectations about who we're supposed to be, how we're supposed to live and what we should believe.
00:14:21
Speaker
And chaos magic invites you to question all of that, which beliefs serve you, which ones don't. And the more that you can let go of like rigid ideas, the more space you have to explore what actually works.
00:14:35
Speaker
you have to understand that there are diverse approaches to practicing magic because at the end of the day, we're all different. And what works for one person might fall flat for someone else.
00:14:46
Speaker
And the goal isn't to copy someone else's magic. It's to find your own

Chaos Magic Practices and Psychology

00:14:50
Speaker
path through trial and error. And when I read that, I was like, how many times do we say that on the podcast? We constantly are like,
00:14:58
Speaker
Do what works for you. What works for me isn't going to work for Sam and vice versa or might not work for you guys. So when I read that, I was just like, oh, funny. We say that all the time.
00:15:10
Speaker
And then um one important concept in chaos magic is gnosis. This word shows up in other magical traditions too, but chaos practitioners use it a little bit differently.
00:15:24
Speaker
So for them, gnosis is the ability to shift your consciousness at will to get into a magical or an altered state of mind. And we all do this naturally when we do things like dream or zone out, or if we have a few drinks to loosen up, but learning how to do it intentionally is where the real magic happens there.
00:15:46
Speaker
Another key idea in chaos magic, though this is not unique to Phil Hine, is its focus on simplicity in form. So while some traditions rely on intricate rituals and layers of symbolism, chaos magic leans into straightforward techniques that keep the focus on the intention.
00:16:07
Speaker
That flexibility gives you the freedom to adapt your practice to your own needs and circumstances. And one example of this can be seen sigil magic, which Sam's going to touch on here in just a bit. But just as a general idea, chaos practitioners often create their own symbols, which are called sigils, as a way to concentrate their will and their intention.
00:16:30
Speaker
It's a simple but powerful method. So you distill your desire into a symbol, charge it with focused energy, and then release it. There's no fancy tools required, basically just belief, clarity, and a willingness to experiment.
00:16:45
Speaker
And going back to what I mentioned earlier about belief as a tool, not a truth, chaos practitioners view belief as a method instead of a hard and fast truth.
00:16:56
Speaker
They adopt beliefs to achieve desired outcomes and discard them when they no longer work for them anymore. There's also an emphasis on results and pragmatism. So in chaos magic, effectiveness is the sole measure of truth. So if a technique works in obtaining a desired result, then the technique is considered valid.
00:17:15
Speaker
There's also this personal empowerment with chaos magic. A chaos practitioner's individual power and responsibility are key to shaping their own reality. And I'm going to touch on that again a little bit later whenever I talk about its ties to psychology.
00:17:31
Speaker
And then also diversity and techniques. So kind of a DIY ethos is what chaos magic is. Chaos practitioners use what works. And this can involve mixing systems, symbols, deities, and even as I mentioned earlier, pop culture within their magic.
00:17:48
Speaker
And so going over some of the rituals and techniques Some of these we will we've already kind of touched on, but and these aren't all of them. These are just kind of the main ones. There's additional ones as well.
00:18:02
Speaker
The first one, obviously, sigilization, we mentioned, there's a key method in chaos magic. And Essentially, you know you're wanting to capture a wish or a goal, and it involves writing out that goal and then turning that goal into a unique symbol, charging or energizing the sigil through different methods like meditation or visualization, and then either destroying or hiding the sigil to allow your subconscious mind to go after the goal without any conscious interference or
00:18:32
Speaker
And again, we've touched on this a lot in episode 24 back in season one. So if you want a more step-by-step guide on sigils, then go back to that. And then as Tiffany mentioned, Gnosis. So reaching Gnosis or that shifted state of consciousness, it's central to chaos magic. And it's a central technique of chaos magic because it is thought to boost the practitioner's ability to affect reality. And this can involve things like meditation, chanting,
00:18:59
Speaker
dancing or even sensory deprivation to get to that altered state. And then psychological manipulation. Using psychological strategies to influence your mindset or maybe even how others perceive things is central to chaos magic.
00:19:14
Speaker
And so this goes back to the chaos magic principle that belief is a tool. And this can include things like affirmations or neuro-linguistic programming or NLP, which I'll go into a bit more detail a little bit later, or even self-hypnosis,
00:19:30
Speaker
And then also servitors. Servitors are intentional thought forms or psychic constructs created by a practitioner to perform a specific function. It involves clearly defining the servitor's purpose, defining a symbolic form or identity for it, and charging it with focused intent or energy.
00:19:48
Speaker
Servitors are like custom mental assistants that you program with your own intent. They live in your psyche and act on your behalf like an advanced form of visualization or self-suggestion, but it's treated like its own entity in chaos magic.
00:20:05
Speaker
And then also chaos sphere work. The chaos sphere is unique to chaos magic and represents the practitioner's personal beliefs and magical practice. Working in the chaos sphere allows for practitioners to nourish their own magical and mental space to support their own magical efforts.
00:20:22
Speaker
Looking at chaos magic and its ties to psychology, as a social worker, and I know, Tiffany, this is something you relate to as well, working in the mental health field and and having the degree that you do have, something that I absolutely can't get enough of is when magical topics intersect with psychology. And chaos magic has a lot of that.
00:20:40
Speaker
So I'm only listing a few examples here, but there are many. There are many different things. So as we mentioned a couple of times, belief as a tool, there are many studies that prove that a patient's expectation can trigger real psychological change. And by adopting a belief as a truth, this helps shape your perception and attention. And so a lot like in CBT or cognitive behavioral therapy, this uses reframing to alter our mood and behavior. And this is something that is a key aspect of chaos magic.
00:21:09
Speaker
but And then going back to sigil magic in the subconscious, as we know, designing your own sigil can be a very profound tool in magic and tying back to psychology, sigils can function like subliminal priming in cognitive psychology. So it focuses your thoughts and choices toward your intent.
00:21:26
Speaker
And then also paradigm shifting and neuro-linguistic programming or NLP, like I mentioned earlier, deliberately shifting between different belief systems and chaos magic is much like cognitive flexibility training. And it's powerful because it exercises the brain's ability to hold and discard mental models, which enhances creative problem solving.
00:21:48
Speaker
And for those of you who aren't very familiar with psychology, but want to know more about and NLP, and NLP is a set of techniques that explore how language, thought patterns, and behavior are connected. And a popular method in NLP is anchoring, which is creating a mental link between a specific state.
00:22:06
Speaker
Like for instance, if you're wanting to feel more confident and a physical cue. So this could be anything, but an example could be like touching your fingers together, linking it back to a time when you felt really confident and allowing you to relive that experience.
00:22:20
Speaker
So it takes a lot of work to kind of get there because you have to sit there and really think about exactly how you felt in that moment. For instance, when you felt incredibly confident or like you could take over the entire world and focusing on like the sights, smells, sound, what you were wearing, what you were doing, and allowing you to have that relived experience. And once that association is made, you can trigger that state by repeating that cue whenever you want to link to a specific mental state.

Chaos Magic Today

00:22:50
Speaker
So very interesting. But lastly, in chaos magic, one of the central tenets is empowerment of an individual, and it emphasizes personal experience, experimentation, and freedom to construct one's own belief system, placing that practitioner in control of their spiritual and psychological journey.
00:23:07
Speaker
Similarly, in therapeutic settings, empowerment is often seen as a critical factor in improving mental health outcomes. So when individuals feel that they have control over their choices, their identity, and their healing process, they're more likely to experience increased self-esteem, resilience, and motivation for change.
00:23:26
Speaker
So when looking at chaos magic through the lens of psychology, it's not just seen as a magical system, but also as a form of psychological reclamation. Chaos magic encourages us to question inherited beliefs, reframe our own inner narratives, and shape our own reality.
00:23:43
Speaker
I absolutely loved all of the crossover too. And i opened your notes before I started my research because I was like, let me see what she's covered. And i was like, oh, perfect.
00:23:54
Speaker
I will say you there was so much like science brought into chaos magic, like in the founding of it. It's all about experimenting and finding those things that align with you that work and they make magic work for you.
00:24:10
Speaker
yeah I, you know, we love a good like science or psychology tie in. Yes, absolutely. i wanted to end this episode on some common misconceptions because when I first started doing the research for this episode, I wasn't really sure like how I wanted to start my research. And so I was just kind of like putting random like chaos magic, this chaos magic, that in like the Google search to see what would come up.
00:24:39
Speaker
And there was a lot of stuff that I was like, okay, So i thought including it on the episode would be good to help like everyone kind of understand more about chaos magic.
00:24:51
Speaker
So first, there's a common misconception that chaos magic practitioners can't work with deities, which isn't true at all. Chaos magic rejects dogma, not devotion. So if working with a deity enhances your practice, then by all means do it.
00:25:07
Speaker
The whole point is that you choose what serves you. Nothing is off limits if it helps you get your results. Another big myth is that chaos magic is somehow harder to master because there are no set of rules or rituals, which I think it's kind of funny. Like the term master to me in witchcraft is like, how do you even get to that point?
00:25:30
Speaker
Does anyone ever even master like any path? Because there's so much to like learn and do and learn. things are constantly changing. So that part was funny anyways. But the truth here is that freedom can actually make it easier, especially for those of you that might struggle with more structured paths.
00:25:48
Speaker
Yes, it might take a little bit of trial and error to find your footing. But once you do, you'll be building a practice that actually fits you, not one that's written for someone else.
00:25:59
Speaker
And to piggyback on this one, It's also thought that chaos magic is harder to practice because there are no rules. And the open structure of chaos magic can feel intimidating at first, but it's actually liberating.
00:26:13
Speaker
So you're not bound by ancient texts or, you know, rites of initiation. You build your own system. For many, that flexibility makes it easier to connect with magic in a personal, meaningful way.
00:26:26
Speaker
I also wanted to talk about that quote that's often tied to chaos magic, that nothing is true, everything is permitted. And some take this to mean that anything you try will automatically work, but that's not quite right.
00:26:41
Speaker
So chaos magic is about experimentation. Not everything is going to work, and that's part of the process. The goal is to try things, observe the results, and keep what's effective.
00:26:53
Speaker
If something falls flat, you let that go and you try something new. That's how you build a practice that's truly your own in chaos magic. There's also a common misconception that chaos magic is just like edgy or rebellious for the sake of it. And while it did grow alongside countercultural movements like punk, its core isn't about rejecting tradition just to be provocative.
00:27:15
Speaker
It's about being efficient, adaptable, and focused on what actually works. It's not rebellion for rebellion's sake. It's results-oriented. Another critique is that chaos magic, like quote-unquote, isn't real because it's modern.
00:27:30
Speaker
Some dismiss it for lacking centuries of tradition, but age doesn't equal legitimacy. Chaos magic has its own evolving system, and its modern roots actually make it incredibly relevant for today's practitioners navigating a fast-changing world.

Debunking Myths and Controversies

00:27:46
Speaker
And then finally, there's this myth that you don't need discipline or consistency. The DIY approach of chaos magic can make it seem like anything goes, but real results still require effort.
00:27:58
Speaker
It's not about abandoning structure. It's about creating your own, tracking what works, showing up, and refining your practice. That's where the power is. It's not lawless. It's just self-directed.

I found so many like when I first started there was I mean even we see it in any form of talk about witchcraft where it was like chaos magic is inherently evil chaos magic is working with Satan and it's just like inserts eye roll so like right the more I started digging the more I was coming across these so I was like I think this is important that we talk about it too Yes. There's like, there's a lot of, i feel like, I don't know, noise, I guess on the internet about all of that stuff about how, you know, oh, there's, there's so many, um, like there's like always all these controversies linked to chaos magic and stuff. And like the only one that I could even get behind is that, you know, with chaos magic, because there's, you know,

not as much you know tradition or whatever, and it allows you to borrow from different traditions, you do have to be careful of making sure that you're not borrowing from a closed tradition or a closed practice. But like just because it's different doesn't make it wrong. so Yeah.

I don't know. There was just so many dumb things. Like- I mean, again, that's we see that so often in our research. like Anytime we're covering a topic that might be a little controversial, which I think it's funny that chaos magic is even considered like controversial because it's it's really not. it's There's nothing crazy about it. And I think it just stems from the word chaos. They're like, ooh, no, don't like that. But like you always see that where like people will come in and be like, oh the devil or oh.
