Anecdote: Marine Corps Chow Hall
00:00:47
Speaker
So, I got to experience something yesterday that most civilians don't get to experience. Do tell. I got to eat at the Marine Corps Chow Hall yesterday.
00:01:03
Speaker
Was it life-changing? It was. I honestly wasn't mad about it. like i They had to kind of finagle me in So hopefully no one gets in trouble. But my XO and this master sergeant that I work with, they were like, oh, you want to go to chow? And I was like, I cannot go to the chow hall with y'all. like Civilians are not allowed on the Marine Corps side. like You have to have special permission from your commander, whatever, whatever. And my XO was like, mm-hmm.
00:01:32
Speaker
Let's try anyway. And I'm like, I mean, okay. we I'm not going to say no. Right. Yeah. But I was just like, I would feel bad if like I can't go in because I don't want you guys to think that like, oh, you have to like walk back to work with me. Like if I can't get in, I'll just walk back. Like it's not a big deal.
00:01:48
Speaker
Yeah. And they're like, no, if they don't let you in we'll make them let you in. I'm like, okay. So we get there and of course, like they're not going let me in.
00:01:59
Speaker
And so the master sergeant was like, I'll be right back. And so he goes, i don't know what sort of backdoor deal he did with the master sergeant in charge of chow hall.
00:02:11
Speaker
But next thing I know, they're like, just let her in. Just let her in So I got to eat at the chow hall. Fancy. I know. I was like, okay. Oh my gosh. will say, because I have eaten at quite a few Air Force DFACs.
00:02:30
Speaker
And food is shit. The Marine Chow Hall. It's actually not that bad. You have to go to the Air Force officer designated defects to get the good food. ah When I was in tech school, me and my friend Tara used to walk all. It was like on the other side of the base and we were like, fuck this. We'd walk all the way over to the officer side and go in there and eat lunch because the food was so much better.
00:02:59
Speaker
That is some bullshit. Especially at that time, I was vegetarian. That's when I was going through whatever the fuck my body was doing when it was rejecting meat. And so I could only eat like vegetarian dishes. And our defect didn't really have them.
00:03:14
Speaker
So I was eating like cheese sandwiches and salads every day. Because that was the extent of it. They go over to the freaking officer's side and they had like eggplant Parmesan and like all this delicious food. Yeah. I was like...
00:03:28
Speaker
I guess I'll just be walking some extra steps every day. yeah Like get in, get in the workout. Yeah. Yeah. I was pleasantly surprised. Like obviously it wasn't like, you know, top tier food, but it was good. Like, was just like, man, if I was a Marine, I would eat here breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
00:03:47
Speaker
Like this is pretty good. Yeah. Compared to anything else, it's so cheap. And it's healthy. was just like, okay. ah you're like ah As much diet Coke Zero as I want to like while I'm there.
00:04:00
Speaker
Yes. I will take it. Sign me up. I will take it. ah But we are not talking about military installation food facilities. We're not.
00:04:12
Speaker
weren Weird. Weird. This is not a military food. i thought this was. Like, I don't know. Break out your MREs and let's discuss D-Facts.
Comprehensive Introduction to Tarot
00:04:24
Speaker
For our non-military listeners, an MRE is a meal ready to eat and they're awful. They are awful. I have had one of those before, ah just the one. And I was like, that's enough for me. had to survive on them breakfast, lunch, and dinner during war week of basic, and it was awful. yeah Gross. It was nice though because I was a vegetarian. I got to be in charge of the food so that I could pick out the vegetarian meals for myself.
00:04:50
Speaker
So they made that my job. So I had cheese tortellini every day because that is the best one, the restaurant.
00:04:58
Speaker
ah But what we talking about for real today? For real, for real. virtual female yeah We're talking basics of tarot for beginners. this is a listener request episode, and this one was from Kiana.
00:05:14
Speaker
So thank you for reaching out and suggesting this topic. We hope that it helps you. And also, I just wanted to put it out there that I am in no way an expert in tarot. So if you're listening and you're like, um this is all wrong or there's a better way, feel free to message us because I'm still learning tarot.
00:05:32
Speaker
but I feel like I'll never master tarot. I'm getting better, but I feel like I'm still like leagues away. but But I also thought that this would be a good time to share that we have covered tarot in the past and Episode 30 31 were on the major and the minor arcana and supercast and Patreon subscribers also have access to bonus episode where we discuss some basic tarot spreads in detail.
00:06:00
Speaker
So just a little bit of background. Tarot originated in 15th century Europe as a card game, not as a mystical tool. Its use for divination became popular in the 18th and 19th centuries and it was influenced by occult traditions, mysticism, and symbolism. There's many different tarot systems out there, but the most common is the Rider Waite-Smith deck.
00:06:25
Speaker
But don't feel like you have to use a specific deck to learn from. Each deck has its own artwork style, symbolism, and sometimes slightly different meanings, so it's worth knowing which system that you're learning from.
00:06:38
Speaker
Just choose a deck that you're drawn to and start getting familiar with it. Tarot is rich with symbolism, with color associations, numbers, and archetypes, so learning the visual language of the cards will better help you intuit meanings beyond just memorized keywords.
00:06:56
Speaker
And the majority of decks will come with a booklet that gives you the general interpretations for each of your cards. and And tarot, if you're just starting out or maybe you've stumbled upon a collective tarot reader on the internet, can feel incredibly intimidating and confusing, especially those collective tarot readers because it's like they're pulling out like 20 fucking cards and you're just like, wait a second, how does this go with this? And, you know, how are you doing all of this? But my favorite is when they're like shuffling like crazy and like 27 cards fell out and they're like, these are the ones.
00:07:30
Speaker
yeah like and But you just dropped half the deck on the floor. What do you mean? Half the deck is what for me. Yeah. So but what we're here to tell you, though, is that it's actually not all that bad. And it can be one of the easiest things you can do to practice something magical every day.
00:07:49
Speaker
So if you're wanting to learn how to practice tarot, I can't think of a better time in history than now because it's become a lot more mainstream and practice openly than even like 10 years ago.
00:08:00
Speaker
So this can be something that you can potentially feel free to practice, even if you're in the broom closet, because there are so many people I know who practice tarot who do not consider themselves to be witches.
Debunking Tarot Misconceptions
00:08:12
Speaker
So going over some basics, the fundamentals of tarot are pretty easy to learn. A tarot deck consists of 78 cards divided into the major and minor arcana. And tarot is a tool that we can use to unveil the story of our lives.
00:08:26
Speaker
It reflects our soul's journey, and it's a tool to unlock inner wisdom by helping us tap into our subconscious minds. As far as the major arcana, this consists of 22 cards and it represents the life lessons that are influencing your life and your soul's journey. And the major arcana I was reading are also like the big themes and the big lessons in your life.
00:08:50
Speaker
The major arcana also forms a symbolic journey called the fool's journey. The fool's journey explains our individual journey of self-development from the fool to fulfillment, which is the world card.
00:09:03
Speaker
There's 56 minor which are your day-to-day situations. So these are broken up into four suits, which are the cups, the pentacles, the sword, and the wands. And each suit has 10 numbered cards and four court cards, which are the page, the knight, the queen, and the king.
00:09:23
Speaker
While knowing all the meanings of each of the cards is absolutely fantastic and it can help you with your interpretations, remember that you should also lean on your intuition versus relying on memorization.
00:09:35
Speaker
You don't need to memorize the entire guidebook before you start. Tarot is a mix of learned meanings and personal intuitive impressions that come from how the imagery and energy of the card speaks to you at that moment.
00:09:51
Speaker
I think it's also important to note that the meanings, while general, will sometimes vary from deck to deck as well. And this is why knowing the basics of what each card means is great, but really you should trust your intuition and your gut when you're reading tarot.
00:10:07
Speaker
Another important thing to remember is that you need to focus on asking the right questions and being very specific. Tarot works best with an open-ended question,
00:10:19
Speaker
that asks the how or the what of the situation. and these types of questions help the cards to provide deeper insight instead of like one worded answers. But this doesn't mean that you can't ask yes or no questions.
00:10:33
Speaker
And I know that there's different ways of pulling cards and different spreads that are meant to for like different types of questions. We have shared a yes or no spread on our socials. way back in the day explaining how to do this and I've linked it in our show notes and we're going to talk about a few like different tarot spreads a little bit later so we'll go into that like in more detail then but remember that when you're reading for yourself be mindful Your emotions and your desires can absolutely influence your interpretation. you should always take a moment to ground and center before reading and try to look at the cards as if you were reading for someone else because this helps keep you more objective.
00:11:14
Speaker
Yeah, and real briefly, i wanted to cover a few misconceptions about tarot itself. So especially, i feel like this needs to be said, especially if you're new to it and tarot feels too magical or too intimidating to you. so There's this huge misconception that tarot is evil and that there's even a ah card in the major arcana called the devil, which is card 15. But this card does not mean anything evil. It speaks to feeling trapped by unhealthy attachments. Maybe you have some limiting beliefs or unhealthy attachments or, you know, something to that effect.
00:11:50
Speaker
It does not mean that you're going to hell. And for that matter, there is literally nothing evil in tarot. It also doesn't mean that the devil's coming for you. Yeah. And it doesn't mean- I've seen it like that in like pop culture. Sometimes they'll flip over the devil card and they're like, he's coming.
00:12:05
Speaker
Yeah. And the same with like, I didn't even put this in there, but the death card. like Yeah. people doesn't mean you're dying. No. It's like, oh death. Change. like Yeah. Transformation. Transformation.
Selecting and Connecting with a Tarot Deck
00:12:17
Speaker
So, oh my God. Yeah. People really piss me off in movies whenever they do that. Cause I'm just like, I can't even take this movie seriously anymore because clearly no one actually did any research for this. Oh yeah.
00:12:29
Speaker
I'm off my soapbox now. um There's also a misconception that you have to have special powers. So like psychic abilities or something to that effect, they are not needed.
00:12:40
Speaker
And it doesn't make you a psychic. Tarot can help you tap. Right? Like who would have thought? Yeah. yeah Tarot can help you tap into certain gifts associated with the Claire's and with developing your intuition, but you don't need to be psychic to read tarot.
00:12:55
Speaker
And additionally, tarot cards can't predict the future. They can offer potential outcomes and help you understand the choices available to you, but the cards in and of themselves are not fucking psychic.
00:13:07
Speaker
Additionally, there is a misconception that you have to be given your tarot deck. We've discussed this before on the podcast, but as a reminder, you do not need to have your cards gifted to you.
00:13:18
Speaker
It's always nice to get tarot cards as a gift, but it's for me, at least, much more meaningful if and I feel deeper connected to the decks that I have picked out myself. I've never like turned down a gift because like you know thank you so much for thinking of me whenever you bought this deck, but- Those aren't usually the ones I reach for whenever I'm doing a reading for myself.
00:13:40
Speaker
Yeah. But I mean, I'm not saying that like you can't buy a gift for somebody. Like please, if you want to buy a tarot card deck for ah loved one or a friend, like do that. And it might be for some people that might be their favorite deck they've ever gotten because it was a gift.
00:13:54
Speaker
It just depends person to person, but you do not need to be gifted a tarot deck. I also was reading somewhere that you have to steal tarot deck from somebody to get your first deck. please don't fucking do that shit either. Where did these rules come from? Right?
00:14:09
Speaker
which And we've talked about this before too, where it's like, it's almost gatekeeping to put these rules on it because it's like how many of us actually know other practitioners around us that would gift us with something like that? Right.
00:14:24
Speaker
<unk> Yeah. It's so limiting and I i hate it. Yeah. Because especially if you're the first person in your group or your family or whatever, who is branching out from traditional belief systems, whatever that may be for you. like If you don't know anybody who is interested in these things, how the hell are going gifted a tarot card? Yeah. And so it's like, okay, well, you can never practice tarot because nobody has gifted you a tarot card deck.
00:14:50
Speaker
Yeah. It's stupid. Dumb. Yeah. And then lastly, another misconception. These are not all of the misconceptions about tarot. No. There's a misconception that other people can't touch your tarot deck, that there is magic in the cards, whatever, whatever. There is no magic in the cards.
00:15:07
Speaker
And having someone touch your deck isn't going to taint them in any way. And if you decide to read for other people, once you get used to reading tarot for yourself, it is honestly ideal for the person that you're reading for to touch the cards and cut them and spend some time with the cards.
00:15:24
Speaker
That misconception is wild to me. like There's this- yeah And I will say like, even growing up, like I grew up pagan as ah I've probably mentioned like 5,000 times on this podcast.
00:15:36
Speaker
My dad read tarot, my step-mom read tarot. and And that was even a misconception that I believed when I was a kid, it was that I could not touch their tarot decks. And not that like, I mean, obviously you shouldn't just leave them around for anybody to play with and touch or whatever. Like you should treat them with some sort of reverence, but like you do not have to like, you know,
00:15:57
Speaker
Cleanse them if somebody accidentally touches them or whatever. I mean, if you are doing a reading for another person, i do think it's best practice to cleanse that deck when you're done just because, you know, you're freeing up any energies or intentions that were placed in the deck by the other person. But just having somebody look through your deck, like I don't see any problem with that.
00:16:19
Speaker
No. and That's just another one. i don't know that we've talked about this one on the podcast before, but it's just like, again, it's just one of those weird things that people say and it's like, why?
00:16:30
Speaker
Like I get energy transference and stuff like that. But if somebody is just like interested in the artwork or something like that, it's not like they're putting negative intentions into you. Right. Exactly. Yeah. yeah Okay, so let's talk about how you can get started and how to start reading tarot for yourself.
00:16:52
Speaker
Obviously, first you need a deck, right? So pick a deck that speaks to you and something that really draws you in. Go with
Developing a Tarot Reading Practice
00:17:00
Speaker
artwork and vibes that feel inviting to you because more because you're more likely to connect with the cards if you actually enjoy looking at them.
00:17:10
Speaker
Yeah. And you don't have to be an expert at this. like You do not have to know anything about tarot before you go and purchase your first deck. You can just go out there and buy a deck that resonates with you.
00:17:23
Speaker
And many of us learn with a Rider-Waite-Smith deck that you know Tiffany mentioned earlier, but This is because the card's symbolism is so ah overt, it's easier to decipher.
00:17:35
Speaker
And I've worked with some decks where I've had to seriously go back and think about the numerology associated with tarot to remember what card that I pulled because the symbolism wasn't as overt for me and it made me difficult for me to read. But that's just me in my experience.
00:17:51
Speaker
That isn't everyone's experience. You do not have to use the OG Rider Waite Smith deck. but I do find it easier to learn from. And so that like, if I was giving advice to anybody new to tarot, I would say definitely pick it up just as a, um I mean, i don't know, I guess just as a reference point or if you're struggling or say like maybe if you picked up a deck, you're struggling to connect with the cards because you're you don't really understand some of the symbolism, maybe pick up the Rider Waite Smith deck first then,
00:18:26
Speaker
and then incorporate the other deck that you picked up as well. Like, just because I feel like it can be a bit easier that way. Yeah. You also should spend some time like really getting familiar with your cards, like flipping through them, really looking at the details, maybe start pulling one a day to like learn its energy without any pressure. Like don't put pressure on yourself to be like, I need to figure out the meaning and you know, what is it trying to say? Just really pull a card and like sit with it, really study like
00:18:59
Speaker
What does it look like? What, you know, pictures are on it What is the number or the word or whatever? Like just really like getting ah feel for that card.
00:19:10
Speaker
e And I sleep with my new decks under my pillow for a few nights. This isn't practice that everybody does and you don't have to do this. But for me, in my reasoning, this allows the deck to absorb my energy while I'm sleeping. And like, it allows me to be with my deck for like,
00:19:28
Speaker
at least like a full eight hours or however long I'm sleeping. So I'll take it out of the box because I don't want to like, you know, mean, if the cards are in the box, it's going mess it up that much, but I will put it in um like a little, like a velvet pouch and put it underneath my pillow and between the pillowcase and the pillow.
00:19:46
Speaker
And I'll sleep like that for a few nights. um And I don't know, it just makes me feel more connected to the cards. And then during the day, when I get a new deck, I will play with the deck. I'll open it up, I'll shuffle it, look at the cards, and maybe use that time to become familiar with the major and minor arcanas without doing any sort of readings or anything.
00:20:07
Speaker
I also will put it in my purse and take it with me. Yeah. Take it to work. Come on, little buddy. We're going on an adventure. Yeah. This is my car. This is my desk. Show my towel. Go to the grocery store You should also start very basic and simple with small spreads.
00:20:25
Speaker
So like I was saying, like a single card or, you know, once you feel a little more comfortable, you can move up to like a three card spread. And this can give plenty of insight without overwhelming you when you're just starting out.
00:20:37
Speaker
Make sure that you're using a journal for your tarot pulls. So write down things like the card that you pulled, what your first impressions were, and any thoughts that came up during your tarot pull. And over time, you'll be able to see patterns and deepen your interpretations.
00:20:54
Speaker
Keeping a journal lets you go back and reflect on your pulls later. that day or even like days after to see what you were interpreting and how that connects to future pools or situations. Even you want to remember to mix your intuition with what the guidebook meanings are for your spreads. um The little booklet is a great resource, but also trust your first feelings and ideas that pop into your head. When you see the card, your intuition can be your best friend in this practice.
00:21:27
Speaker
I started out by learning general card meanings on the internet, which can be super overwhelming. There are some meanings that remain constant from source to source. But there's also so many variations out there, which is really difficult for someone when they're first starting out.
00:21:44
Speaker
So my recommendation would be to find a deck that you love and then just spend time like reading the guidebook and learning the meanings associated with your specific deck.
00:21:56
Speaker
And then spend some time with your actual deck, flipping through the cards, getting familiar with their artwork and their imagery and symbolism that's on each card. Keep your deck with you during the first week or two so that it can really like absorb your energy. And once you're feeling more confident in your deck's interpretations, then you're going to start out with something like the single card pool um and write down your initial thoughts, your interpretations of that card based on your questions before reaching for your guidebook.
00:22:27
Speaker
Oftentimes there's something in the card that your intuition is going to lean into for the question that you're asking. So after you've written down your initial thoughts, then get your guidebook and see what the meaning of that card is and how it compares to your initial thoughts and your intuition.
00:22:44
Speaker
and just like with anything else, practice makes perfect.
Beginner-Friendly Tarot Spreads
00:22:48
Speaker
Make sure that you're finding a consistent way to and incorporate your tarot reads into your schedule, be it daily, weekly, or whatever works for you.
00:22:57
Speaker
It also helps to make your tarot readings a ritual. So keeping some consistency to really put you in the right headspace for your readings. Do things like lighting a candle, playing some calming music, or just shuffling your deck a certain way.
00:23:14
Speaker
Do whatever helps you feel grounded and focused before you start your reading. And then some beginner-friendly spreads. So the one that I was talking about earlier, the yes or no tarot reading, I have this linked in our show notes, but this is a reading that can help you gain a better understanding for those clear-cut yes or no questions.
00:23:36
Speaker
So for this one, what you'll want to do is shuffle your cards really well, and you're going to flip your cards over one by one into three separate piles.
00:23:47
Speaker
For the first pile, you're going to start flipping your cards over and until you either reach an ace or your 13th flipped card. Meaning if you flip an ace over at any point,
00:23:59
Speaker
in cards one through 12, you're gonna start a new pile. If you don't reach an ace, that pile ends on your 13th flip card anyways, and you'll move on to your second pile.
00:24:09
Speaker
And you repeat this process for piles two and three. And if you end up with zero or one aces in your pile, then your answer is leaning towards a no. And if you have two to three aces in your piles, then your answer is leaning towards a yes.
00:24:25
Speaker
And then the next one I have is the three card spread. So this is a really simple tarot spread using three cards. That's perfect for for beginners and seasonal readers alike.
00:24:38
Speaker
It's easy to learn. it gives plenty of insight and it works for almost any question or situation. The common formats for this spread are going to be past, present and future.
00:24:51
Speaker
situation, advice, and outcome, or mind, body, and spirit. And to start, you'll want to shuffle your deck while focusing on your question or your intention.
00:25:02
Speaker
You'll then start to draw your cards, laying them in a row from left to right. Each card represents the format of your spread. um so most commonly what people use here is past, present, future, meaning that in this format, the first card is going to be past, the middle card will be present, and the third card will be future.
00:25:23
Speaker
When reading this spread, will interpret each card's position's meaning. Then you're going to look at the story that they tell together as a whole. And remember to write down your initial interpretations before grabbing your guidebook and then lean on your intuition first.
00:25:42
Speaker
And so kind of this episode, I wanted to include some reading tips that I found useful, um especially as somebody who... um wasn't super into tarot for most of my adult life and just recently within the last like year and a half became much more consistent with the practice obviously the daily draw that tiffany has mentioned on this episode already this is one of the easiest ways to become proficient at reading tarot It makes learning and understanding the symbolism less overwhelming and it allows you to start your morning off intentionally.
00:26:17
Speaker
So, you know, obviously, you know, not going to go over again exactly how to do it. But what I do with my daily polls is I will look at the card. take note of the symbolism that speaks to me and then go about my day.
00:26:29
Speaker
And then at the end of the day, I'll go back to the card, open my little tarot Bible that came with my deck. And if I need to get more insight on the meaning of the card, I'll do that. And then I'll sit with it for a bit.
00:26:41
Speaker
And then I try to be mindful on how that specific card maybe influenced my day. Did it shape my awareness or even the choices that I made that day? and something that I did this year, I tried it for the first time. It was a yearly draw. And I loved this so much i worked with a few friends and we sat around and pulled cards for 12 months of the year for 2025 and then took turns interpreting the cards for each other and i thought that this was a perfect way to start the year and i highly recommend it so like with a daily draw a yearly draw helps you to shape your awareness of the year ahead and it can influence your choices and intentions and it also helps to drive the tone and focus of your year and put into perspective the things that
00:27:26
Speaker
you maybe want or need in your lives. Additionally, something that I do a lot is I incorporate tarot cards in spells that I do. So this could be also a really easy way to get you started with tarot. Like say, if you are more comfortable with spell work, right?
00:27:45
Speaker
You can research the different cards, their meetings or symbolism, whatever, And for a specific spell that you're working on, there's probably a corresponding tarot card that you can use, or even a couple of tarot cards that you can use to help with that intention in that spell.
00:28:02
Speaker
So with that in mind, you can just set it up, um or maybe even include some of the symbolism from the card into your spell. Like, so if there's,
Tarot Resources for Deeper Understanding
00:28:12
Speaker
you know, specific plants or fruit that are on the card, like incorporating that in your spell can also, I feel like be incredibly powerful.
00:28:21
Speaker
And then lastly, journaling. So we say all the time on the podcast that you don't need any fancy, fancy tools or anything like you can literally just use a piece of paper or for instance, my um actual grimoire is literally a binder with loose leaf paper in it. But something that has really helped me in my journey to really learning and understanding tarot and incorporating it into my daily life was this book. It's a workbook. It's not technically a journal, but you can use it kind of as a journal. It's called Decoding the Cards by Sheila Ellis.
00:28:53
Speaker
I have included the link in the resources of where you can get this workbook, but it has space dedicated for every card. And it also gives insights and examples on combining cards, different exercises and reversals.
00:29:07
Speaker
And there's also an amazing tarot journal on the website as well that I've linked in there. i have the undated tarot journal and that is really nice too, because you can even buy like little stickers of each of the tarot cards. And so whenever you pull a specific card, you can like, you know, put a little sticker of the card in there. It's, it's super cute. But that's something that has really helped me. And also shout out to my friend,
