Host's Anecdote: The Dogs and the Fence

00:00:54
Speaker
so my precious little sweet baby angel dogs discovered that they can fully jump over the fence of course they did This is not surprising.
00:01:09
Speaker
ah yeah Where did they go? did they get far? Oh, they were chasing a cat. oh eat Because we have 957 neighborhood cats that all frequent our front yard.
00:01:24
Speaker
And i went to let them out one morning and I opened the door and they're waiting because they we have this thing where they have to wait until they like make eye contact with me. And then I tell them yes. And when they hear yes, then they're allowed to go outside.
00:01:39
Speaker
So they're like waiting patiently, staring me in my eyes. And then I'm like, yes. And they just bolt. and sprint, and up and over the fence, like, like a horse jumping hurdles in, like, a fucking show pen.
00:01:56
Speaker
And I'm just standing there, like, are you fucking kidding me? I bet they were, like, sitting there, like, like, a is like tell like, telling Nix, like, telepathically, like,
00:02:09
Speaker
Be normal. Look at mom normal. Get it together. play along. I know you want that cat. We're going to get that fucking cat. just be normal. If mom thinks that we're up to something, she's not going to say yes. Probably. The only time that Nix has ever listened in her life.
00:02:28
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. No, Nyx just like, she cleared it. No fucking problems. Just hopped right over it like a little bunny. Rune clipped his foot and tripped.
00:02:39
Speaker
And I was like, that's what you get. Yeah. I was so mad at them. was so furious. But also it's like, Nyx, like, Miss Scaredy Cat of everything. yeah. The fence didn't scare you?
00:02:51
Speaker
No. She said, boop. Yeah. The cat didn't scare you? That mean old cat? No. Oh god. So did they catch the cat?
00:03:03
Speaker
Oh, how did you find him? The second all four, well, I guess all eight of their paws hit the ground on the opposite side of the fence, they knew they fucked up.
00:03:15
Speaker
They immediately were like, shit and like cowered down and started like making the walk of shame back and I like opened the gate because they had to go all the way up to like the front door where our gate is I opened the gate and Nyx like creeps by me like tail tucked like so are are sorry sorry Rune on the other hand is like i think I'm just gonna jump back over I'm not coming over there how about Nyx just accepts her fate and Rune is like no okay Rune's like you know what
00:03:46
Speaker
I think I can just jump back. I'm going to just jump right back and I'll run right into the house and then we won't have to deal with this. We'll pretend it never happened. Yeah. i I didn't even go outside yet. What are you talking about?
00:03:59
Speaker
Yeah. And then like five minutes later, Anthony texts me about something and I was like, oh, how's my day going? You ask? Your dogs just jumped the fence. Of course.
00:04:11
Speaker
What the fuck?
00:04:14
Speaker
Oh, man. Yeah. It's like, wow, I just that we spent all this money building a fence for you to jump in. Yeah, and time. Yeah. Yep.
00:04:24
Speaker
Yep. Just for you to pretend like it didn't even exist. Like, Barrier what barrier? They jumped out like it was just a curb. like I'm just like, okay, cool. Yep. That was my day the other day. And that was the day after I worked at the dental clinic. So I was already just having a great day.
00:04:49
Speaker
came home drained, tired, stressed, and then had to deal with that. Mm-hmm.

Focus on Kitchen Altars in Witchcraft

00:04:56
Speaker
Yeah. That's how it always happens. Yeah. But we're not talking about my goofy ass dogs and their shenanigans tonight. are not. No.
00:05:08
Speaker
What are we talking about? We're talking about kitchen alters. Yes. Woo. so So this is actually an episode that was a listener topic request.
00:05:21
Speaker
They asked for kitchen altars specifically, but it's possibly inspired us to create an altar series where there'll be periodically episodes covering seasonal altars and different types of altars in witchcraft. So thank you so much for the suggestion.
00:05:38
Speaker
I completely forgot who it was that requested it because it was in that like week where we got like 27 requests. So I can't even give you a shout out on on this, but we we saw your comment. We saw your request and now we're doing it.
00:05:52
Speaker
ah Yes. Yay. And also if you want us to shout out you on the podcast, just send us a message and we'll shout you out on the podcast. Yeah. Yeah. That was my bad. i Look, it's been a week.
00:06:07
Speaker
Yeah. been a week, a crazy, crazy week. And I did mean to go back and see if I can figure out who it was that requested it. And then I forgot.
00:06:17
Speaker
So. ah Understand. Yeah. But let's just get into it So we're just going to do a little brief altar overview because we have talked about alters like multiple times just recently.
00:06:32
Speaker
We haven't done like a real deep dive on specific types of alters. So, um but we did do an hour long episode back in season one. It was episode 14. So if you haven't listened to that episode yet, make sure that you go back and listen.
00:06:48
Speaker
But just in case, just a like very brief general overview of alters before we take a deep dive into kitchen alters specifically. Yeah. So just to recap, an altar is a sacred space that you intentionally create to focus your energy and work your magic on with or around.
00:07:08
Speaker
It's deeply personal and it can look however you want it to, like it's yours. So it's a place where you connect with yourself, your practice, and the world around you.
00:07:20
Speaker
Alters are a focal point for energy a decorative display, a place of remembrance and worship, a place of magic.

The Kitchen's Role in Magic

00:07:30
Speaker
It allows you to have a dedicated space to help you shift your mindset from the mundane to the magical.
00:07:38
Speaker
You can also have more than one altar. If you practice eclectically, you're not tied to just like one single space, one single setup. Make your space and your practice work for you.
00:07:52
Speaker
And your altar can be something you proudly keep on display or something you choose to keep private, especially if you're concerned about others seeing or questioning it. And here's an important note. Altars are personal.
00:08:03
Speaker
Unless it's a shared family altar, it's generally considered respectful for others not to touch it. Your altar is an extension of your energy, so protect it as such. And just a little safety reminder, just in general, and this will probably be something that we discuss every time that we do an episode in the altar series, if you have pets or children, make sure your altar is out of their reach, especially if you're leaving offerings on them or you are burning anything.
00:08:30
Speaker
And again, just think of your altar as a dedicated space for your magical workings. moving into specifically kitchen altars, the kitchen is often considered the heart of the home.
00:08:43
Speaker
It's a space where we pour so much of our time and our energy and for many of us, our magic as well. It's a place of creation, of comfort and nourishment, both physically and spiritually.
00:08:56
Speaker
Across cultures, the kitchen has long held its place as a central gathering point. And for kitchen witches, it becomes even more sacred. It's a space infused with magical intention and everyday ritual.
00:09:09
Speaker
And dedicating a space in your kitchen for an altar and using it as a part of your practice not only acknowledges the importance of these practices itself, but it also allows you to remember the cultural and spiritual significance that food can provide in your life.
00:09:25
Speaker
So kitchen witches, shocker, I know, primarily work their magic in the kitchen. and And because of that, it makes total sense to have an altar in that space. It's a dedicated area where your magical practice and your everyday cooking intersect.
00:09:40
Speaker
Vervain from the blog Vervain and the Roses shares several beautiful and practical ways to set up a kitchen altar, and I want to walk you through them. So option one is a separate stationary kitchen altar.
00:09:56
Speaker
So this type of altar isn't in your main cooking space. It's set aside in a safe and quiet part of your kitchen where it's less likely to be disturbed. Some examples of locations for this type of altar would be a small shelf, a window seal, or even just like a cake stand that you tuck into a corner on your counter, a lazy Susan on the kitchen table, or even a drawer that pulls out that would like, you would open it and it reveals your altar space, which I thought was kind of cute if you have extra drawer space.
00:10:28
Speaker
Yeah. We have a tiny kitchen, so I don't. And I was like, oh, that would be really cute though. So you want to include items like a candle, representations of any deities that you work with, and even like things like your salt and pepper shakers can live on your altar because functional items can be magical too.
00:10:49
Speaker
If you have a favorite herb that you include in all of your meals, you could put that on your altar as well. You want to really make this space yours. Your altar should reflect your energy, your practice, and your aesthetics.
00:11:01
Speaker
So if something calls to you, whether it's a crystal, a spoon, or even something like a feather, you could include it. And there's no like wrong way to create an altar.
00:11:12
Speaker
Option two is a functional kitchen altar. In this version, your working space is your altars. So you blend form and function by infusing everyday tools and surfaces with magical intention.
00:11:26
Speaker
And some examples of this type of altar space would be things like your stove, a cutting board, the sink, or even like a kitchen island. They all become your magical workspaces.
00:11:38
Speaker
You want to include items that you use in your practice, When working kitchen magic, like a trivet that might be shaped like a pentacle, a wooden spoon that you treat as your wand or a favorite cooking pot that you might refer to as your cauldron.
00:11:52
Speaker
Yeah. And so additionally, whenever I was looking into this, I was researching and I came across one article that was talking about how you can carve or burn or even draw a sigil on the handle of like a wooden spoon to keep a magical or or like keep a magical spoon set specifically for any ritual cooking you do or any kitchen spells that you create. And I thought like, especially if you're using like your kitchen as your altar, like that would be so

Adapting and Integrating Kitchen Altars

00:12:21
Speaker
fucking cool. And if you guys do any of this stuff, send us pictures because I want to see it.
00:12:28
Speaker
And additionally, cast iron itself is protective and grounding and can be a great addition to altar, especially if you are using, like whether that be like a stationary kitchen altar or using a functional kitchen altar where your kitchen is your altar.
00:12:43
Speaker
And then like with a magical spoon, you can use a specific pot for cooking any ritual or magical meals you create or even in brewing teas as well. And I have a friend who has thrifted a really cute pot that she uses specifically for simmer pots as well.
00:12:59
Speaker
And this is such a fun way to incorporate kitchen witchery in your life. You can use this as like a centerpiece for your altar as well. That is super cute. Make sure that you choose tools that also double as magical implements and that you decorate your space in a way that supports your vibe, whether it's cozy or rustic.
00:13:20
Speaker
If you're more glam, earthy, like whatever makes your kitchen feel enchanted and alive to you. Option three is to use your entire kitchen as your altar.
00:13:32
Speaker
So this altar is just as it sounds, meaning that your whole kitchen is literally your altar. For this type of altar, you need to have a mindset shift. So view everything in your kitchen as part of your practice.
00:13:44
Speaker
Your fridge, that's sacred storage. Your spice rack, that's a spell cabinet. Your dishwasher, that's your ritual cleanser. Like whatever you have to think of for everything in your kitchen, give it its own little like magical use and name.
00:13:59
Speaker
um The benefit is that this option gives you the most freedom and the broadest canvas to work with. So it's immersive and it turns your whole kitchen into a sacred space, which I kind of love.
00:14:12
Speaker
I do too. I love that. i know When I was reading your notes, um I was like, oh, man, that's cool. Like I never even thought about that. Yeah. I'm like I mean that's basically what my kitchen is anyways. Exactly.
00:14:25
Speaker
And then bonus tips for your coach your kitchen altars. Do seasonal swaps. So try decorating your altar space with seasonal ingredients or herbs like cinnamon and clove in the winter, fresh basil and lemon in the summer.
00:14:40
Speaker
It helps to keep the energy fresh and connected to the wheel of the year. Do daily rituals, things like stirring intention into your morning coffee, which we've talked about before on the podcast, um wiping your calendar wiping your counters with in herbal infused spray or bless your meals before serving. These small moments are powerful and they can turn mundane chores into magical acts as well.
00:15:06
Speaker
I always like one of my favorite ways to incorporate something that is mundane into my magical practice in my home is cleaning and viewing cleaning as a ritual is the perfect way to do this.
00:15:19
Speaker
Not only does it make your home smell good, but it also makes you feel good. And it can be a very powerful practice if done with the correct intention. And so in reference to like a kitchen altar, and i mean, in any altar for that matter,
00:15:34
Speaker
Keeping it cleaned is important because it removes any stagnant energy. And so with any of the different options that Tiffany mentioned, you can use cleaning as a ritual. You can infuse your sponge broom, dish towel, and even your soap with specific intentions. You can also just use specific herbs for specific intentions in your cleaning, depending on what you're drawn to and like bonus points to like most likely the herb that you're using probably is going to end up boosting your mood as well. So just keep it in mind.
00:16:08
Speaker
And then if you're really just looking for some guidance, here's just a few staple items that you could include on a kitchen altar. There is a lot of kitchen tools and objects that hold a lot of magical significance that we may not realize.
00:16:22
Speaker
And you can add these to your alter, maybe even place them in a special location in your kitchen for storage, specifically for ritual purposes. So like, especially if you're the type of person who maybe practices in a broom closet,
00:16:35
Speaker
If you want to have like a specific cupboard only for those ritual items, that's an example of ah um how to do that. But basically whatever works best for you. And with ah with some of these, we'll give some examples of how you can use them.
00:16:49
Speaker
So it dips into the realm of actual kitchen witchery, which we've covered before in the podcast. So I'm not going to go very deep down in that rabbit hole. And I know Tiffany's not either, but for those of you who maybe haven't listened to that episode yet, I wanted to like include some basics on that.
00:17:03
Speaker
Something else you can include is your favorite herb. So maybe you have a small pot of your favorite herb that you keep there and you grow it and you add it to your practice.
00:17:14
Speaker
but As noted before, a candle, um this can symbolize light and warmth as well as add just a cozy setting for your cooking, which I love to light a candle and some incense when I

Magical Tools and Practices in the Kitchen

00:17:26
Speaker
go into my kitchen. it just brings the vibe exactly the way I want it while I'm in there cooking.
00:17:31
Speaker
Salt, because salt has so many purposes in a magical practice and it's used when cooking. So definitely a great addition. Tea kettles or just a teapot in general. the represents the element of water and transformation.
00:17:45
Speaker
And steeping tea can be seen as infusing a spell and you can even speak your intention into the steam while your tea is infusing. So like keeping that tea kettle on your altar, I think is a really good practice.
00:18:00
Speaker
And it's super cute. um Some form of symbol that you associate with your kitchen witch practice. This could be something like a statue of a deity that you work with.
00:18:12
Speaker
It could be a tarot or oracle card that you associate with your kitchen or kitchen witchery. Literally anything that you feel speaks to you, your practice, and your kitchen space.
00:18:23
Speaker
One of my favorite little things to keep in my kitchen or in my little apothecary workspace is a mortar and pestle. This is a perfect addition to a kitchen altar space.
00:18:35
Speaker
It's functional. It comes in many shapes, sizes, colors to fit your aesthetic. And it also could work as a visual reminder of your intentions and the work and dedication that you put into your kitchen craft.
00:18:48
Speaker
Yeah. And it's so useful too, because like sometimes there's a reason why it survived throughout history for this long, because some of the modern day like kitchen tools that we have for even like chopping garlic and crushing it. Like it is messy. You don't get all the garlic out. like Like just put it in the bowl and mash the shit out of it.
00:19:10
Speaker
Also, you could in include a colander or a sieve. And these are associated just specifically with protection, filtration, and clarity. And it can be included on your altar as a way to symbolically strain out what no longer serves you, or obviously you can use it like practically um to strain out and filter out things that are no longer serving you and your recipe.
00:19:32
Speaker
And additionally, in some folk magical practices, sims were used to trap spirits or negative energy. so Also, food elements like a bulb of garlic, an onion, or even ingredient for the meal that you're preparing later that day, like the ones that don't need to be kept cold, obviously.
00:19:51
Speaker
Those ones that can sit on your altar, you can put them there the night before or when you wake up in the morning and let them spend some time on your altar soaking in the magic and intention that you've built and created there before you make a meal with them, which I kind of love that idea. Aw, I love that too.
00:20:08
Speaker
Yeah. That's cute. I know. So there are specific magical practices that you can do at your altar. To start out, obviously using your kitchen altar in your everyday cooking is the perfect way to incorporate magic into your daily life.
00:20:24
Speaker
Using any of your ritual tools, as we discussed just a second ago in your cooking, is also a great way to incorporate magic into your daily life.
00:20:35
Speaker
And, you know, Tiffany mentioned you know, the whole stirring your coffee thing. We've talked about this so many times on the podcast, but for those of you who maybe have not listened to those episodes or want a refresher, you can incorporate stirring magic it and and it doesn't have to just be coffee. It can be, you know in a pot or in whatever you're stirring, you can incorporate this. So clockwise to attract grow or bless counterclockwise to banish release or diminish and always a good idea speaking your intentions as you stir so um that's a really easy way also seasoning with intention and viewing your intention into your spices before adding them to your recipes you could do some sigil cooking
00:21:21
Speaker
So drawing a sigil in your flour with your finger before you knead the dough. And depending on the elaborateness of the sigil, you can even do that with oil in a pan before cooking or honey or icing. If you're making a dessert, you could even lay out patterns in your cooking with certain fruits or vegetables to create like a sigil um before you bake it. And this is like specifically if like you're using like your stove as your altar or your entire kitchen as your altar.
00:21:50
Speaker
um because some of that with kitchen root witchery and like kitchen altars, it really overlaps. And then additionally, you know, Tiffany mentioned incorporating candle magic into your kitchen altar. And this is probably like for me, the thing that I really connect with because I love candle magic.
00:22:07
Speaker
But, um you know, as Tiffany does, where she keeps a candle at her altar in her kitchen and lights it before cooking, This is a very small way to make your cooking magical and a way to make it more intentional. So if you already have that kind of set as a practice that you do, that can, even if you are um having like a terrible day or like you're not being very like mindful in the moment, just that practice of lighting that candle and continuing on with your kitchen, making that are a ritual can put you into that mindset of you know magic and ah rituals. So using color magic when it comes to candles, we've talked about all of these colors on the podcast already, but um green for abundance and health,
00:22:52
Speaker
Yellow could also be abundance, could also mean joy and clarity. Blue for peace and protection. and white could be an all-purpose candle, ah the same with black.
00:23:03
Speaker
But really with some of, we talked about this back in season one, but when it comes to like candle magic and the different colors that you use, it's really, it

Deities and Spirits in Kitchen Magic

00:23:13
Speaker
can be personal. Like, yeah, some things you might want to keep the actual color it's corresponded with. But mean, there's always room for your own thoughts and feelings, and that's what makes it most unique for you and probably more powerful.
00:23:29
Speaker
So real fast, I wanted to cover kitchen deities and spirits. There are many deities across different cultures and traditions, and depending on your specific practice, there are many different deities that you could honor at your kitchen altar.
00:23:42
Speaker
Most of these we've either featured or mentioned before on the podcast. But what ties these deities together is that they're all tied to the hearth, fire, domestic life, nourishment, and sacred transformation, which are all things that we would see in a kitchen.
00:23:56
Speaker
So first, Hestia, which is the Greek goddess of the hearth and the first flame. She represents peace, domestic stability, and sacred hospitality. And in ancient Greece, no temple was built for her, but her altar was the fire in every home.
00:24:13
Speaker
And if you want to honor her at your kitchen altar, light a candle to honor her while you're cooking. That's a really easy way to do that. Brigitte is the Celtic Irish triple goddess associated with healing, smithcraft, and with the sacred flame of the hearth.
00:24:27
Speaker
She's also the keeper of the home, inspiration, and the transformative power of fire. and you can honor her with a Brigitte's cross at your kitchen altar. Vesta is the Roman goddess and counterpart to Hestia, and she has the more formal priesthood. So if you remember us disgusting disgusting and guys so if you remember us discussing the Vestal Virgins on the podcast, that's i mean we we it was only like a few episodes, I feel like, a ago.
00:24:57
Speaker
Yeah, i don't think so. But it was not that long ago. um Her sacred flame was never allowed to go out and she's associated with the continuity of the Roman Empire. Like with Hestia, you can honor Vesta by lighting a candle at your kitchen altar.
00:25:11
Speaker
Phryg is the Norse goddess of motherhood, household, order, and fate. She's connected to the spinning wheel, but also the domestic space and the protection of the home. She can be a goddess to honor at your kitchen altar through spell work, to provide protection, or harmony for your family.
00:25:27
Speaker
Kamado Kami This is the Shinto Japanese spirits, which is kami, of the kitchen, hearth, stoves, and domestic fires. They are traditionally honored to ensure health, prosperity, and protection, and you can honor them at your altar by lighting incense or providing small offerings for them.
00:25:46
Speaker
And then lastly, um and this is just lastly for the deities. This is not all of the deities that are associated with them with kitchens and the hearth, but this is the last one I'm going to cover on this podcast episode, but Lares and Panates. And have struggled with figuring out exactly how you're supposed to pronounce it because I've seen people say Larry's or Laurie's.
00:26:16
Speaker
So I don't know. um But it looks like if I was just going to look at it, it looks like it says layers and pinnates, but I know it's not how you say it. Pinnates and layers. So I think it's...
00:26:29
Speaker
Yeah, I think it's Larise and Panades. I could be wrong though. But these are the Roman household spirits, not deities, but they are known as guardians of the pantry and home.
00:26:39
Speaker
And many Roman families kept small household altars to honor them near their kitchen or dining area.

Creating Kitchen Altars and Conclusion

00:26:46
Speaker
Lastly, here's some correspondences that I came across that can help you incorporate the elements into your altar and your kitchen magic.
00:26:56
Speaker
So for air you could use sage and lavender. For water, you can use thyme and rose. For earth, you can use mugwort and honeysuckle.
00:27:08
Speaker
And for fire, you can use rosemary and carnation. And with all of this, remember that you don't need to go out and buy all the things to create an altar.
00:27:19
Speaker
Use what you already have and what your space allows for. If you don't have the space for fresh herbs in your kitchen, dried herbs work just as great. If you don't have the means to constantly be refreshing herbs on your altar, draw a picture of them and let that picture represent the herbs and the correspondences that you're working with.
00:27:39
Speaker
Obviously, for your magical workings and for food preparations, a picture isn't going to be useful. But as far as your altar decor goes, use what's within your means, what you have access to, and don't overcomplicate it.
00:27:53
Speaker
And at the end of the day, you want this to be a space that you enjoy creating your kitchen magic in So make it that. I 100% agree. Because like there's nothing worse than like feeling overwhelmed in your kitchen space anyway. so if you are If you think like, oh, well, to have a kitchen altar, I have to have x y Z. And yeah it it ends up becoming so inauthentic to what you actually want to practice. Yep.
