Discussion on Fantasy Book Titles

00:01:53
Speaker
ah I started reading that um I actually, so you know how I was like, oh my gosh, didn't you say that The Bridge Kingdom was really good? And you're like, I have not read that.
00:02:05
Speaker
Never read that. Was it actually this book that you said was good? ah ah Curse So Dark and lovely or Lonely? Curse Dark and Lonely? Sounds familiar.
00:02:17
Speaker
Doesn't it sound familiar? And so I, someone was selling the whole series for like $15 and I was like, I mean, I love that for you. Twist my arm because like So I picked them up and I started reading it and I am intrigued.
00:02:33
Speaker
So that one wasn't me either. Wow. Who told me to read these books? oh my gosh it has two different dust covers look at this one that's my favorite I like when they're reversible yeah and then this one I like that one that one's pretty I know I'm just like and I'm pretty sure the main love interest is blonde so I'm like okay Rowan a blonde so we'll see Rowan is a silver-haired man okay that is true So we'll see.
00:03:03
Speaker
I don't know yet. I don't know. But so far, I'm only like a couple of chapters in, but there is a curse and that's as far I got. And it's dark and lonely. And it's dark and lonely. Yeah.
00:03:17
Speaker
I feel like it's hard to remember a lot of times. Because all of the book names right now are so close. They really are. It's like a court of this and that, a curse of that and this. like All of them are just like just throw in a court of, a curse of, or like something close to that. And then it's always something and something. Yeah. always is. don't know if it's just like this plug and play

Fantasy Tropes and Uniqueness

00:03:44
Speaker
right now.
00:03:45
Speaker
So I'm always like, did I read that one? was that? No, it was this one I'm thinking of. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yep. i and one I even felt the same way with I went, I was at thought the library and I know that I think the last two Jennifer Armantrout books that she's released in the From Blood and Ash and then the other one that I really liked with Niktos or whatever. Niktos, yeah. um I didn't read their last two, but I couldn't remember which one I hadn't read because I was like, I don't remember the name of the one that I did read because then the name was similar. I'm like, I have no fucking clue.
00:04:22
Speaker
but um So I had to like sit there and like research which ones I had read and then look at the back of the books to double check that I had read them because all of the names sound familiar.
00:04:33
Speaker
I'm trying to look because I think I remember what book i was either reading or had read and I told you. by and it's like close to that. It's the Spassia Stark series.
00:04:49
Speaker
Okay. Let me see. i can't. I don't remember if this is the first one, but this one's called a Crown This Cold and Heavy. my God. Basically, the same goddamn name as this book right here and the other book that I just mentioned. The first one is called a Court This Cruel and Lovely. It's A Kingdom This Cursed and Empty, a Crown This Cold and Heavy, and A Queen This Pierce and Deadly.
00:05:16
Speaker
Breath. I'm going to need these authors. Get more creative. Yeah, because this is too much. Yeah. With a T-E-W. This is too much. Too.
00:05:30
Speaker
T-E-W. Too. God damn. It's confusing. Yeah. It's I like, I literally never know people, you know, I work at a bookstore.
00:05:41
Speaker
People come in and they're like, have you heard of this book? And I'm like, this sounds familiar. Did I read this? Did I not read this? Was it something similar? Because also, and this is, you know, I've been talking about this a lot lately and I've could have talked to you about it. I don't know, but I feel like a lot of fantasy right now. I read a lot of fantasy, a lot of romanticy and it's all just the same story over and over and over Just different characters and there might be like one little element that's different.
00:06:08
Speaker
yeah And so like recently in like my friend book club, we read um A House of Bane and Blood and I loved it. Whereas like a couple, um i'm trying to think, Julia didn't read it because she's been fucking working a lot.
00:06:27
Speaker
But one person was like, was okay. Like, I didn't love it. I didn't hate it But it was very just like typical fantasy. And i thought for me, I was like, I love this one because it was so different from all the other fantasy I've been reading because they've all been the same story of this like underdog young woman gets thrown into this like fantasy world and then like overcomes everything by the end.
00:06:53
Speaker
and this one was just so, so different. And I was like, oh, I love this. Yeah. Oh, but yeah. They're all like the same story, the same story. It is. It's really frustrating. And it reminds me too of that TikTok that every time I come across it, I have to play it a few times where it's like that girl is like talking about how essentially every fantasy like main character and it's like, I was underfed and I was so, so skinny.
00:07:27
Speaker
I was... i was high foot and so skinny. We've seen the one where it looked like, everyone was locked in a cage, but because of my thin body, I wriggled through the bars.
00:07:43
Speaker
Those videos crack me up. Me too. But yes, if you are a fantasy novelist, And you just happen to be listening to this podcast. Please write us something. Write us something that is creative and awesome and has an amazing love interest and isn't the same damn story.

Exploration of Horror Genre

00:08:02
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. so That's why like when I come across stories that are different, I'm like, oh my God, I love this. Yeah. I have been on a horror kick lately though. yeah I've just been like horror after horror after horror. Not a horror kick.
00:08:18
Speaker
ah Yeah, yeah, yeah. yeah, yeah. No, but I don't know. Like I've just been like it's been like a hot minute. I think, you know, like I used to kind of cycle through between sci-fi, fantasy, horror and just kind of like go back and forth depending on my mood. And here lately I've just been like fantasy, fantasy, fantasy, fantasy.
00:08:38
Speaker
I was like I need something different and I just like picked up a horror book and like it's just been like one after the other like since then. I just read and I don't know if I told you about this one already. It was called Jackal. I don't remember the author, but it was so fucking good.
00:08:54
Speaker
It was set in Appalachia and it was like every um solstice, it was it the summer soltice I think I think young black girls would go missing and then they would be found dead like in the woods later with their hearts like missing.
00:09:14
Speaker
And sometimes there be like other things missing or they would be like torn to shreds. And so it was like figuring out who the big bad was. And it had a human element to a big bad and a supernatural element to it. So it was just such a good blend of like supernatural but like realistic horror too.

What is Cord and Knot Magic?

00:09:35
Speaker
ah Yeah, I'll have to add that to my list of books to read because that sounds awesome.
00:09:42
Speaker
Loved it. It was like my pick of the month for the bookstore. We always like post like our favorite read of the month at the end um on our social media account.
00:09:53
Speaker
So i was like, I picked that one. Everyone should read it. it was so good. Nice. Yeah. But once again, this is not a book podcast.
00:10:05
Speaker
Unfortunately. feel like we said that last week. We do go on lot of book rants, but all right. What are we talking about today? We are talking about cord magic and knotwork. So i guess to kick it off, we're going to talk a little bit about some background in history when it comes to this topic. So knot magic or cord magic is a practice that involves the physical act of tying and or untying knots to bind, release, or direct magical energy.
00:10:36
Speaker
And it uses knotted cords or strings to manifest intentions and desires. And cord and knot magic is an ancient form of folk practice that was often associated with weather and wind work, though there are many other ways to use this form of magic.
00:10:52
Speaker
Traditionally, these spells would be prepared in advance, stored in knots, and then released as needed. Each knot in the cord represents a stored intention or magical power.
00:11:03
Speaker
Over nine consecutive days, the knots are gradually untied, releasing the contained energy. And we're going to talk about like how to do this later on in the episode.
00:11:14
Speaker
But nine is typically the number of knots that you use when you're doing knot or cord magic. Knot magic can be used in a variety of different spells to include love spells, protection, and healing spells.
00:11:27
Speaker
They've also been used to bind oaths, ward off evil, and trap spirits. Each spell uses a different knot pattern, which we didn't necessarily go over on this episode, but maybe in a different episode we will maybe do another iteration of maybe some of the different knot patterns that there are out there if you guys are interested.
00:11:47
Speaker
In traditional folk practices, the cord would measure nine feet, which when i read this, I was like, Jesus, like they're just carrying around these nine foot cords all the time.
00:11:59
Speaker
Sometimes it's called a cord of three times three. And the color of the cord would then be chosen to match the purpose of the spell or the intention. Yeah. While nine foot cords were the traditional, many practitioners would use a smaller nine inch cord instead, which to me was more practical because these were easier to carry and to keep close for personal use.
00:12:22
Speaker
Because the cord itself is considered a powerful, magical tool, it was also strongly believed that no one else should use your cord.

Historical Significance of Knot Magic

00:12:31
Speaker
Its power and intentions were meant to be kept private and personal.
00:12:35
Speaker
Yeah, so historically, knot and cord magic can be traced back to many different cultures throughout history. It's one of the oldest forms of folk magic and has been seen in ancient Egypt, Greece, and in Celtic traditions.
00:12:50
Speaker
In ancient Egypt and in ancient Greece, knots were used in protective amulets and and funerary rites. And in Greece, the Heracles knot, which was a strong double knot, was a symbol of protection and unity often tied into wedding garments.
00:13:06
Speaker
And I apologize in advance if you are hearing that fucking jet that is flying over my house. Wow. but the mission apparently never sleeps here. So um additionally, in Celtic traditions, knots were interwoven in patterns and art, jewelry, and manuscripts like in the book of Kells and symbolized eternity and spiritual connection.
00:13:34
Speaker
And the triquetra, which is often interpreted as the knot of life, death, and rebirth was featured prominently throughout Celtic traditions and Even if you might not know what the Triquetra is, if you look up anything related to like Celtic artwork, you will see it. It is featured prominently throughout a lot of Celtic artwork.
00:13:57
Speaker
And in Slavic customs, untying knots were used in childbirth ritual rituals to ease labor. And this symbolized the unbinding of the womb or the loosening of life's transitions, which I thought was really interesting because yeah like, you know, symbolically like putting that that pain or, you know, making it easier like by doing like untying knots, but then also it takes your mind off of the pain itself.
00:14:22
Speaker
Yeah. and then lastly in medieval europe witches were accused of using woven charms to influence weather or harm their enemies and the woven spells were seen as literal vessels of magical power and even embroidery and cross stitching were used to encode protective sigils or to hide meanings within their patterns And Supercast subscribers, does this not remind you of some of our past books that we've read for book club, specifically The Discovery of Witches and Hester? Like both of them, I was reading that and I was like, oh my God.
00:14:57
Speaker
yeah i love it. I also think like if you think about what happened like during the witch trials and stuff, like how so many women were just accused of witchcraft.
00:15:11
Speaker
for not even like practicing witchcraft, like how easy is it for someone to say like, you're embroidering, which was like a a thing that women did daily practically in the past. Like that was their life, like sewing, embroidering, like that kind of stuff.
00:15:27
Speaker
So how easy would it have been to just be like, you're a witch, obviously look at you embroidering over there. Right. Yeah. Is that a rose or is that the devil's eye? Yeah. I don't know.
00:15:42
Speaker
It's just interesting to see like when you think about like what has happened in history, things like this that come up where it's just like, oh, yeah, makes sense. Yeah. so we look at folklore, though, like throughout history, knotwork and cord magic has been used by sailors to bind the wind, which I loved. Like I went down a rabbit hole on this and even like untying the knot to like stir the wind in the direction that they needed it to be.
00:16:09
Speaker
Knotting winds was a magical practice believed to control or influence the weather, especially the winds. And sailors and sea witches would tie knots in a cord or a rope to capture the power of the wind and then use or release it later to ensure a safe journey or favorable weather conditions.
00:16:28
Speaker
And here's how it like typically looked. So to capture the wind, the practitioner would go to a windy place, often a hilltop or a cliff near the sea, and they would tie three knots in a cord.
00:16:40
Speaker
Each knot was believed to trap a portion of the wind's power. And for the three knots, the first knot captured a gentle breeze. The second knot held a stronger wind and the third knot contained the most powerful gusts.
00:16:54
Speaker
And to use those knots when at sea, the sailor would untie the knots one by one to release the desired strength of wind depending on the situation.
00:17:04
Speaker
So if the ship needed a gentle push, only the first knot was untied. If they needed more force, they untied the second or the third knots. There was also this great like reverence for these cords.
00:17:16
Speaker
So misusing them could anger the sea spirits and bring about storms instead of safe winds.

Cultural Practices in Knot Magic

00:17:22
Speaker
So they had this like respect for this type of magic and the winds that it controlled.
00:17:28
Speaker
And of course, like we're going to see cultural variations. So in Norse tradition, wind witches were often women with weatherworking skills And they were said to sell these wind knotted cords to sailors who believed in their protective power. Yeah, I was also reading that sometimes they would also incorporate runes into the um protective knots to invoke protection from different gods as well, which I thought was really cool.
00:17:55
Speaker
Yeah. In Scottish and Irish folklore, knotting winds was tied to sea witches and cunning folk who had close ties to the weather. The knots themselves can be tied in a specific sequence or pattern to amplify their magical potency, and each knot can also be accompanied by a spoken charm or a visualization to further empower the working.
00:18:18
Speaker
Modern practitioners sometimes adapt cord magic for other purposes like affirmations, healing work, or even goal setting where they will tie the knots to represent milestones along the journey.
00:18:31
Speaker
And then there's an ancient Greek legend that tells of a famous knot tied by King Gordius, and it's called the Gordian knot. And it's said to be impossible to untie and whoever could solve it would rule Asia.
00:18:45
Speaker
And then in this folklore, Alexander the Great, instead of untying it, he sliced it in half. so Because of course. Because of course. And then also in Japanese folklore, in Shinto and Buddhist traditions specifically, untying of ceremonial knots, also known as musubi, during different rituals is known to bring clarity and resolution to a situation. Yeah.

Applications of Cord and Knot Magic

00:19:10
Speaker
Just pretty cool. Yeah. So let's just talk about some uses for cord and knot magic. So for starters, cord magic is often described as similar to candle magic.
00:19:22
Speaker
But instead of working with fire, you're working with knots and cord. So if you prefer not to work with open flames or if you live somewhere where fire isn't practical, cord magic could be a perfect alternative for you.
00:19:34
Speaker
And while there are infinite ways to use or practice cord magic, here's just a few of them. So the first one, like most common use for cord magic is to treat the cord as a storage vessel for power.
00:19:48
Speaker
So each knot is going to hold a specific intention or a magical charge and it's ready to be released when you need it. And additionally, you can use them to bind or restrict someone in like a binding spell.
00:20:00
Speaker
So you can bind or restrict their actions or their influences. And these spells have somewhat of a bad reputation, but they aren't always negative or controlling.
00:20:11
Speaker
They can also be protective and help limit harmful behavior or allow you to distance yourself from toxicity. And you can also use them in banishings.
00:20:23
Speaker
The knots can represent obstacles, fears, or energies that you want to bind and control or even banish altogether by untying them with intention. And so some examples when it comes to binding and banishing specifically, you can bind a toxic person's influence so they can no longer affect you.
00:20:41
Speaker
You can bind your own destructive habits. And then also spirit bonding is a thing as well to trap or contain malevolent in it entities. And then for how to, like it's best to use a black cord for banishing or a white or a gray for restraining.
00:20:57
Speaker
And here, i guess the The tip would be to tie knots while visualizing the unwanted energy being restricted and store the cord in a jar or bury it to reinforce the binding.
00:21:09
Speaker
Cord and knot magic is also a powerful tool for goal setting in manifestation. So each knot can represent those milestones um like a step in your goal or a wish that you're working towards.
00:21:21
Speaker
I love that because it also keeps you engaged in that manifestation as well. like youre I love that. That is really cool. Additionally, it can be used in healing spells. So if you want to focus on any sort of spiritual, physical, or emotional healing for any ailments or sicknesses that you may have, and these can also be focused or used on behalf of someone else with their permission though.
00:21:46
Speaker
So examples of this would be like tying knots while visualizing pain, tension, or illness being drawn out of your body. And you can also create a cord with healing colors. So whatever that means to you, and we have color correspondences listed a bit later, but some good ones would be green, blue, or white.
00:22:06
Speaker
and try and use it in meditation. And Gizmo agrees here. um so You could also bury a knotted cord as a symbolic release of illness or grief.
00:22:18
Speaker
And so a little how-to tip here would be to focus on slow, intentional knotting paired with breathwork or visualization and include affirmations or prayers of healing as you tie each knot.
00:22:31
Speaker
And then you could also use it in love spells to attract love, enhance relationships, or promote harmony. And these can be used in romantic or platonic situations, but they're best to use when both parties consent or participate.
00:22:47
Speaker
Consent is important. Consent is important. ah Examples would be to like maybe braiding a cord with pink, red, or white threads while focusing on self-love, knotting a charm or token that is symbolic to your relationship like a ring um to maybe strengthen a bond, or using a nine-knot spell to call in new love into your life.
00:23:12
Speaker
And then tips would be like using a clause or a saying like so for the good of all to avoid unethical influence. so like especially if you are trying to attract love to you, like maybe like to try and keep your mind off of trying to like bind a specific person to you.
00:23:33
Speaker
But like using this clause or saying for the good of all keeps it to where it's like, you know, It's open to interpretation that you don't wish any harm or ill will on anybody else.
00:23:44
Speaker
And then also you can use it in prosperity spells. So this would be, you know, drawing in abundance, opportunity, or financial state ah stability. And some examples include like braiding a green or a gold thread.
00:23:59
Speaker
while visualizing wealth and abundance flowing freely into your life, or creating a knot charm that you keep in your wallet or at your altar that symbolizes abundance to you, like whatever that means for you, and creating knots around a coin or a gemstone that is associated with abundance, like citrine, jade, or aventurine.
00:24:18
Speaker
And some tips here would be practicing your prosperity knot work with the waxing moon. So this would enhance growth and and gain and Using eight knots in this particular working, which symbolize infinity and continuous flow for prosperity.
00:24:34
Speaker
And then um also in protection spells. So to shield yourself or others or a space from negative energy or from harm.
00:24:45
Speaker
So examples would be like creating a protective braid to hang over your doorway or maybe your car mirror. tying a cord around a charm or talisman and carrying it with you for protection.
00:24:56
Speaker
And then some tips could include incorporating protective herbs like rosemary or mugwort into your protective braid or knot, and a set number of knots, like specifically like three or nine, and speak a protective spell or charm with each one that you tie.

Practicing Cord Magic

00:25:13
Speaker
And beyond spell work, Courts can become ritual tools or talismans themselves carried on your person to act as a constant source of support or protection. So when we're looking at knot magic in practice, according to Scarlet Ravenswood, cord and knot magic can be used for any intention. And it's about it's all about trapping your desire in a series of knots and you then release the knots depending on your working over a series of days.
00:25:45
Speaker
So an example that I read is that if you're working knot and cord magic as a way to try and gain wealth, you would release your first knot shortly after the new moon and then proceed to release the other knots during the next consecutive days at the rate of one knot per day, growing your spell at the rate of the moon, which I loved, like incorporating it with that so you can you know do a little moon magic with your knots.
00:26:12
Speaker
Yeah. um And then while traditional folk magic used... either a nine foot or a nine inch cord in practice for this type of magic, you can honestly use whatever length you want, especially if you're incorporating some form of numerology into your practice.
00:26:29
Speaker
You can alter it to however many centimeters, inches, feet, etc. Just do what feels right and what works for you. And we're going to talk about the different like colors and stuff.
00:26:40
Speaker
And while we keep saying knots or like cords, you have to use a cord, you have to use a cord. You could literally use anything that you could tie a knot into. So don't feel like restricted to just like I have to go out and buy a cord. If you don't have a cord, use like a piece of fabric or whatever you have, like lying around an old T-shirt that you cut up, something like that.
00:27:00
Speaker
It doesn't have like we tell you guys all the time, like you don't have to go out and spend all this money, you know, make sure you're using what you have. Use a piece of like long grass if you have it. Like literally whatever you have on hand, it doesn't have to be anything elaborate.
00:27:15
Speaker
Yeah, and so going into color theory, as with everything in magic, often different colors correspond to a different purpose. So some practitioners use one color, whether it be white or black for all purposes, but really just like with the type of medium you use for your cord, you could use whatever color you want. It just depends on what works best for you and your practice.
00:27:40
Speaker
Okay. So let's look at some of these colors and what they stand for in terms of like working, not in cord magic. So black is great for workings for wisdom, banishing, protection, grounding,
00:27:54
Speaker
dream work, repelling negative energy, and even introspection. Blue is great for joy, peace, forgiveness, honesty, devotion, tranquility, patience, creativity, wisdom, and for working with the element of water Brown is good for earth magic, focus, building, and providence.
00:28:15
Speaker
And for copper or gold, this would correlate to, of course, like success, money, sacred masculinity, luck, abundance, justice, well-being, persuasion, charm,
00:28:28
Speaker
the sun, as well as god magic, if you're looking for like a deity type magic in your chord magic. Green is good for creativity, prosperity, growth, physical health, green witchery, and garden magic.
00:28:43
Speaker
And gray is for neutrality. Orange is great for workings of self-awareness, the mind, justice, motivation, openings, optimism and creativity, adaptability, business goals, and ambitions.

and then i found this common chord magic spell on a blog called Spells of Magic that was pretty easy to follow along with. I have the link in our show notes, obviously. The author's name was Lark.

So make sure that you check it out if this practice like piques your interest. Essentially, once you know your intention and you have picked a cord that is the appropriate corresponding color, you'll want to tie a knot at both ends of your cord to prevent it um from fraying. And these knots are not included in your nine.
00:30:24
Speaker
And then you're going to start making your knots in the order that follows while repeating these lines. And this might get a little confusing, Like at least it did for me. So I had to get a piece of paper and draw it out as I was like reading through it to understand like where on the cord each knot was going. So if it is a little bit confusing, like maybe hit pause, back it up a little bit and then get a piece of paper and draw it out because that like the visualization of it made it make so much sense to me. I just drew like a straight line to represent the cord on a piece of paper. And then I divided it with nine lines representing the nine points on the cord.
00:31:01
Speaker
And then like plugged in the knot as I was reading through. So I was like, okay, these are where they're going. Try that. See if that helps this like make a bit more sense when you're trying to visualize it So to start, you're going to tie your first knot at one end of your your cord. And this is representing position one of the cord.
00:31:21
Speaker
And you're going to say the words by knot of one, the spell begun. and you can spend some time like meditating on your intentions or even repeating the line. But basically, you're going to sit with each knot like this until it feels appropriate to move on to the next knot.
00:31:37
Speaker
The second knot is then tied at the other end with the word by knot of two it cometh true. So make sure to visualize your intentions as you're going and your desires being fulfilled.
00:31:49
Speaker
As your power builds through the spell, you're going to continue tying your knots until all nine are tied. Not three is tied in the fifth position, ah which is the center of the string with the words by not a three. So mode it be not four is tied in the third position with the words by not a four. This power I store not five is tied in the seventh position of your cord with the words by not a five. The spells alive.
00:32:19
Speaker
Knot six is tied at the second position with the words by knot of six, the spell I fix. Knot seven is tied in the fourth position of your chord with the words by knot of seven, events 11.
00:32:33
Speaker
Knot eight is tied in the sixth position with the words, by knot of eight, it will be fate. And finally, knot nine is tied in the eighth position of the chord with the words, by knot of nine, what's done is mine.
00:32:47
Speaker
When you've tied your ninth and final knot, all the energy should be directed into the chord and its knots. While still visualizing the intent of the working, this allows the power to be raised and then essentially stored within the knots in the cord.
00:33:03
Speaker
Storing the magic in the cord and then undoing your knots at an appropriate time for the spell that you're working allows you to gain maximum power within the working. So you can create your knotted cords on say full moons with the full moons energy. And then you can start your unbinding to start your spell on like a different phase of the moon. That's maybe more powerful for that spell, but still using the full moons energy and your cord. Wow. love that. Right.
00:33:34
Speaker
Yeah.
00:33:37
Speaker
But also like that made me think the spell itself made me think of Discovery of Witches when I was like writing it out because they do. She does like not magic essentially with the same similar like wording and everything. Yeah. So I was like, I love this.
00:33:53
Speaker
m Yeah. Yeah. That is really cool.
