Humorous Book Recommendations
00:00:46
Speaker
Have you been burying our bones in the night's will yet? No, that's next. You've been saying that's next for a while now. ah You need to read it. Here's the thing. I've been on a horror kick lately. i just can't stop.
00:01:01
Speaker
Okay. Well, you need to read it. And did you read- I promise after I finish the troupe, I'm reading that one. Okay. And then did you ever read Blood on Her Tongue? No, that's still on my shelf. Oh my God. it is so good. That's what I'm reading right now. And I'm just like, it's so good.
00:01:17
Speaker
So if you are listening to this and you're like, oh yeah, book recommendations. This is not a fantasy. Well, I guess fantasy and the fact that it's, you know, deals with some things that are not real that wouldn't happen in real life, I guess.
00:01:33
Speaker
Yeah. um You should check out Bare Bones in the Midnight Soil and Blood on Her Tongue, both of which are very, very good books.
00:01:44
Speaker
But once again, this is not a book podcast. No, maybe that might be coming.
Cultural Significance of Dreams
00:01:54
Speaker
What don are we talking about today? We are talking about dreams. More so specifically connecting with spirits in your dreams. Yeah.
00:02:05
Speaker
And this was a listener request. And I couldn't find the comment that this request came from for the life of me. But I know it was in a comment somewhere.
00:02:18
Speaker
So I've planned to shout you out. But I spent like an hour looking for this comment and could not find out. Like couldn't find where it came from. So, sorry. i also want to say that don't know how comfortable you were with this topic, but I am in no way an expert on this topic. i have wouldn't say i'm expert in the topic, but I do have experience with this topic. So um I was really excited to cover this just because of
00:02:51
Speaker
some of the experiences that I've had. So yeah. Yeah. Yeah. This was, this one was more of a, I've never really looked into this. So it was pretty new for me. And some of it was a little obscure, but it was a lot of fun to research too. yeah.
00:03:06
Speaker
so So to kick us off, I wanted to talk a little bit about dreams in spiritual and cultural context. So people have been asking about the meaning of their dreams since the beginning of time.
00:03:19
Speaker
And while some people believe that there's simply nothing more than something random, Many people believe that they are messages from the other side. Dreams and dream work have been debated, interpreted, and discussed throughout history and across every culture.
00:03:34
Speaker
Dreams are universal, but their meaning is shaped by each culture's unique beliefs, values, and traditions, influencing how people interpret and understand them.
00:03:45
Speaker
Dream incubation was practiced across Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Hebrew traditions, and it involved performing rituals or sacrifices at a temple, then sleeping in a sacred space so gods could send prophetic dreams, which were interpreted by the dreamer, an oracle, or both.
00:04:06
Speaker
The first example I found of this is the fact that ancient Egyptians had dream interpreters who were basically the original dream analysts, helping people decode visits from the gods.
00:04:18
Speaker
In ancient Egypt, dreams were believed to be messages from gods or spirits of the dead. Egyptians took dream recording seriously, noting symbols and meanings like the moon as a sign for divine forgiveness or a mirror as an omen.
00:04:34
Speaker
of needing a new spouse, which I thought was kind of funny. was like, all right, then um there's a mirror in my dream. I need a new spouse. yeah ah In ancient Greece, temples dedicated to Asclepius were used for dream incubation where people would sleep hoping to receive healing visions.
00:04:54
Speaker
And I actually discussed this at length in episode 155. So if you haven't listened to that one yet, make sure that you go back and listen. But essentially, those that visited Asclepius's healing grounds would receive dreams that they believed were from deities that aided in their healing.
00:05:11
Speaker
And it was all part of their healing journey where many would receive messages on how their healing would actually take place. Many indigenous traditions see dreams as sacred spaces where ancestors can guide, warn, or teach.
00:05:25
Speaker
And it's a place to connect with animal and ancestral spirits and a universal consciousness through ritual practices. While each tribe's traditions differ, they share a deep respect for dreams as holy experiences, carrying personal or universal messages from the world's spiritual ecology.
00:05:44
Speaker
In Australian Aboriginal mythology, The dreaming is both the time of creation and an ongoing reality, where ancestral spirits dreamed the world into being and can still be visited in special night dreams to learn, connect, and keep creation alive.
00:06:04
Speaker
Many ancient cultures share the belief that dreams exist outside everyday life, offering deep connections and healing. This is a view now echoed by research into inherited trauma and shared cultural memory.
00:06:16
Speaker
In the Old Testament, dreams were seen as a gateway to divine wisdom with figures like Joseph, Samuel, Daniel, and Balaam receiving messages from God and interpreting visions that could change the course of nations.
00:06:32
Speaker
Folklore is also full of like ghostly dream visits, from loved ones delivering comfort to mysterious strangers dropping cryptic advice.
Spiritual Meanings in Dreams
00:06:41
Speaker
So moving into a little bit of the different types of spirit communication in dreams, the first type of communication is through spirit guides. This may take on different forms. so your spirit guides may present themselves to you in a form that might be familiar to you in a dream, but um it can be somebody that you've never met in your life, but they could show up as a teacher, a stranger, animal, et cetera, rather than showing their true form. But they often present themselves in dreams as being wise and calm. They are there to guide you
00:07:14
Speaker
to teach you or to reassure you, and they may encourage your personal growth or give symbolic lessons in your dreams. And usually if a spirit guide visits you in a dream, you may wake up feeling inspired, understood, or maybe even grounded.
00:07:29
Speaker
it is not common to be fearful of a dream if a spirit guide is communicating with you in your dream, and there is an underlying sense of safety, even if the message is serious. Another spirit communication that you could experience in a dream are from ancestral spirits.
00:07:45
Speaker
Ancestral spirits will usually present themselves as relatives you may or may not have known personally, but in the dream, it's like you know that they're your ancestor. They can show up wearing traditional dress, maybe using specific language or symbols that are common to your ancestral roots.
00:08:02
Speaker
Usually ancestral spirit dreams happen to protect us and sometimes to warn us of something. They can also be a blessing or sometimes they can happen to pass along family wisdom and they may happen when there is a need to maintain a connection with your ancestral roots or if they're asking you to research that.
00:08:19
Speaker
Ancestral dreams may include different clues like references to family events, heirlooms, or traditions and And the dream may take someplace like a large family gathering and you may feel rooted within the dream. Like you have this feeling of returning home to your ancestral land or like your ancestral home if you have one, even if it's a place that you've never actually been before.
00:08:45
Speaker
Another type of spirit communication in dreams are from deceased loved ones. These are known as visitation dreams. And these dreams usually contain specific people that you knew personally, whether that be parents, friends, or other loved ones.
00:09:01
Speaker
The visiting loved one will often look healthy, happy, and whole, regardless of how they passed. Visitation dreams feel very different from regular dreams. They are more vivid, usually peaceful, loving, and you may even wake up comforted or with a sense of awe.
00:09:19
Speaker
Usually visitation dreams come with messages of reassurance. So it's like your loved one is letting you know that they are okay, maybe that they are still with you, and that it's okay to let go of whatever you're carrying.
00:09:33
Speaker
And whenever you wake up from those dreams, like it can be very emotional, and that emotion can stick with you throughout the day. For other entity type communication in dreams. So whether this be angels, deities, nature spirits, unknowns, things like that, this can be presented to you in dreams as like glowing figures, animals, mythical beings, or even shadowy presences.
00:10:01
Speaker
Usually these types of dreams happen to deliver a message. So sometimes it could be a warning or a shift in energy. Not all of these dreams are peaceful or benevolent. So it's really good to pay attention to these types of dreams. And then if you have one and you realize, okay, well, maybe this wasn't like the best thing, maybe do some sort of cleansing ritual afterwards.
00:10:24
Speaker
and when these dreams do occur, the visitor may speak in symbols, riddles, or maybe in a strange language that you've never heard before, but maybe you could understand in the dream. And you may even wake up feeling some sort of strong physical sensation, like your heart racing, maybe tingling, feeling cold or hot, cetera.
00:10:45
Speaker
and then there's another type of spirit communication dream involving a random spirit visitor. Usually these types of visitation dreams include spirits that don't have any personal connections to you.
00:10:58
Speaker
They may look like strangers, appear briefly, slip into the background of your dream, and often can occur when you're first falling asleep. They usually aren't intentionally visiting you. Sometimes they can be, but oftentimes it's because you're tuning into their energy because we are all more naturally receptive when we're dreaming.
00:11:17
Speaker
These visitors may speak or they may not. Their messages could be confused or fragmented. You may see different people across several different dreams. It's like picking up on a stray radio signal because our own internal antenna is so strong as we're falling asleep.
00:11:34
Speaker
So when you're thinking about like, say if you've had a dream and you're like, okay, well, how do I know if this is a spirit communication dream versus a regular dream?
Spirit Communication vs. Regular Dreams
00:11:43
Speaker
There are some different ways that you can know for certain if it is a visitation dream or like a spirit communication dream versus a regular dream. First, spirit dreams are usually very vivid and clear.
00:11:56
Speaker
They're sharp. It's like you're you're actually there in the dream. The colors, details, and the sounds stand out, and you can possibly even smell or feel things. Regular dreams on the other end tend to be hazier. They shift quickly.
00:12:11
Speaker
They have missing pieces that don't bother you while you're dreaming. It just kind of makes sense in the dream. For spirit dreams, there's an emotional impact. So they leave an emotional mark. You may wake up feeling peaceful, comforted, loved, or maybe moved, and those emotions linger throughout the day.
00:12:28
Speaker
The emotions of regular dreams, however, fade quickly and they're less easy to recall or the dream itself feels less meaningful and more random. As far as the message and focus, in a spirit dream, there's often a single clear message. There's no irrelevant side plots or jumps like you would see in regular dreams.
00:12:47
Speaker
The message is very clear. Also, there's a sense of presence. In spirit dreams, you feel like someone is really there with you. It's not just a dream character you created in your mind, they are real.
00:12:59
Speaker
And regular dreams, people may act out of character or behave like props in your dreams instead of distinct beings. And an example of this that i want to mention as well. So in later on, I'm going to discuss a couple of visitation dreams I've had with my dad.
00:13:15
Speaker
But that doesn't mean that every time I've dreamt of my dad, it's been a visitation dream. There are times when like I will dream about my dad who has passed away and I know that it is just a dream and that it's it's just just a regular dream and not him coming to visit me because in that dream, it's like there's not that sense of presence. Like it just feels like he feels like a side character in a regular dream, if that makes sense.
00:13:41
Speaker
And then additionally, in spirit dreams, you can recall them quickly and easily even years later. they feel etched into your memory. So if you've had a spirit dream, you know, because all of the details stay with you for years and years and years. It's not something that you will easily forget.
00:13:58
Speaker
Whereas in regular dreams, the details slip away unless you write them down immediately. And then when it comes to after effects with spirit dreams, you may notice synchronicities when you're awake. So hearing a related song, like say if you're, if you had a visitation dream from a loved one, maybe you smelling their perfume or their aftershave, seeing their name or maybe a picture of them randomly.
00:14:20
Speaker
Whereas in regular dreams, they usually end when you wake up and there are no signs afterward. So let's talk about how to prepare for dream work.
Preparing for Dream Work
00:14:31
Speaker
So like most things in witchcraft, it all starts with intention.
00:14:34
Speaker
So even a quick line before bed saying something like tonight, I'm open to messages from my guides can really set the tone for what comes to you in your dream space.
00:14:46
Speaker
Your sleep environment matters. So try to keep it cozy and peaceful. Try to have dim lighting, comfy bedding, Maybe light some incense to cleanse your space and refrain from using your phone before bed since the light is stimulating and can disturb your ability to even sleep.
00:15:05
Speaker
Using the same incense every time too can help like trigger your brain and your body into relaxing and preparing for the night as well. If you're using the same one every time you light it, your body is going to be like, okay, it's time to like get into this headspace, get comfy and go to sleep and dream. A dream journal being kept by your bed is kind of essential if you want to do any type of dream work. Even if you're only like jotting down a few words before like the memory of it slips away, it can help anchor the dream for you. And because if you're anything like me, like your memory of your dreams will vanish within a few minutes of waking. But like Sam said, you know, there's those different types of dreams. So
00:15:48
Speaker
Herbs and crystals can be great allies here too. Herbs like mugwort, chamomile, and lavender, and crystals like amethyst and moonstone are all tied to enhancing dream recall.
00:15:59
Speaker
and deepening the connection to spirit messages. And most importantly, make sure that you're setting boundaries and practice some protection rituals and magic. If you're inviting spirits into your dreams, think of it like locking your front door.
00:16:14
Speaker
So only allowing in who you truly want to like welcome into your space.
Understanding Prophetic Dreams
00:16:19
Speaker
So real quick too, I wanted to include something in here about prophetic dreams, because I think that while it's not necessarily a spirit communication, it could be depending on the type of prophetic dream you have.
00:16:33
Speaker
So prophetic dreams are also called precognitive dreams, and they're dreams that provide glimpses or insights into the future. They can include a lot of symbolism and themes that carry different messages, and there are different types of prophetic dreams.
00:16:47
Speaker
There's precognitive dreams, which are dreams that give a glimpse of the future, predicting events or situations that could occur or will occur. Warning dreams, which act, of course, as you could probably imagine, as warnings.
00:17:01
Speaker
alerting us to potential danger or negative outcomes, prophetic healing dreams that offer insight into our own personal healing and guidance on how to overcome obstacles, find peace or healing, and collective prophetic dreams which shed light on societal issues and transcend the individual.
00:17:18
Speaker
They depict symbols and themes that are meaningful to a large group of people. And so like, if you hear about that anomaly of a lot of people having the same type of dream, and it's like a dream about the future or something that is a collective prophetic dream.
00:17:35
Speaker
And like I said, like, it doesn't necessarily mean that spirit is trying to communicate with you, but it could be, especially if like you, for instance, lose something and you're asking like your spirit guide or your call on, what is that? say Is it St. Michael that people call on or is it seem anthony I don't know. Honestly, I'm not Catholic. But one of the saints, like people call on a lot if they've lost something.
00:17:58
Speaker
I think it might be St. Michael. It could be St. Anthony. I don't know. This could be maybe to like tie into a prophetic dream as well with spirit communication if you... believe in all that. So looking into dream interpretation and integration, Tiffany mentioned, having a journal by your bed is essential, especially if you're wanting to start noticing themes and patterns in your dreams.
00:18:22
Speaker
Keeping either like a physical notebook or a digital one on your phone, it it doesn't matter. Like either way, like record your dreams as soon as you wake wake up, write down whatever you remember, even if it's only fragments of the dream that you can recall.
00:18:36
Speaker
Try and recall feelings or emotions that you felt in your dreams. Often the emotional tone of a dream is more important than the plot. Over time, patterns and connections will emerge from those dreams.
Interpreting Dreams
00:18:48
Speaker
And then what you can do as well is meditate or reflect on a dream that you've had So revisit it and maybe ask your guides things like, what were you trying to show me? What insights can you provide to me about this dream? And then you can also practice lucid dreaming.
00:19:04
Speaker
We have an entire episode about this way back in season one episode 38. But lucid dreaming is essentially the ability to be aware that you are dreaming while you are still in the dream.
00:19:14
Speaker
This can allow you to create opportunities for you to actively engage with spirits while dreaming. Becoming adept at lucid dreaming can also help you interpret your dreams much more easily and understand what messages you're receiving from spirits in your dreams.
00:19:29
Speaker
So if you start working on connecting with spirits in your dreams or just dream work in general, here's some troubleshooting and ways to like set boundaries.
Troubleshooting Dream Work
00:19:40
Speaker
So if you have a dream and it feels off to you or maybe it even leaves you feeling drained, it's perfectly okay to pause on your dream work. practice some cleansing, banishing, and protection, and just reset your space. And remember that you don't have to entertain every spirit or message that comes through.
00:20:00
Speaker
Protective charms, herbs, or visualizations can help you set those boundaries. So you might want to tuck something like an amethyst or a black tourmaline under your pillow, fill a sachet with protective herbs like rosemary or lavender to keep near your bed or even under your pillow,
00:20:19
Speaker
Practice some visualizations by imagining a glowing sphere of light surrounding you before you fall asleep. The idea is to create a safe container for your dreaming. You can also set verbal boundaries.
00:20:32
Speaker
So for this, you would just literally say something out loud or in your head along the lines of like, only my guides and ancestors may visit me in dreams. We've said this many times on the podcast before, but There is a power in spoken words and this is just kind of like a way to essentially draw the line in the sand.
00:20:50
Speaker
If unsettling dreams keep happening, a cleansing ritual or cleansing with an herb bundle or incense or even just taking a salt bath before bed can help you reset the energy and bring peace back into your sleep.
00:21:06
Speaker
I like to include herbs in my mop water to help set the energy for my space. So if you have flooring other than carpet, you could do that as well to help clear it. Above all, remember you're the one in control of your spiritual space, whether you're awake or asleep.
00:21:22
Speaker
So set those boundaries, practice some, you know, protection and cleansing and banishing if you need to, and just do what feels
Personal Experiences with Dream Visitation
00:21:33
Speaker
And to end this episode, personal story time. And I know you have some too. I know you're like, I'm not an expert at this Girl, you've had some dreams. And when told me that, I'm like, what the hell? My dreams that are like fucked up are the ones that stick with me. They're never people I know or have met.
00:21:51
Speaker
I've had them as early as five years old and just have never known what the fuck is going on. Yes. Yeah. Those are ones I'm talking about. The ones where it's like, you're like seeing somebody's murder. like Yeah. Like I'm, I literally see fucking...
00:22:05
Speaker
death i go to sleep and see death and then i wake up tired yeah help so i have had visitation dreams from my dad i've had two that um like happened pretty shortly after he passed and usually like with visitation dreams they say if you're going to receive one they will happen shortly after they pass to help you you know with a sense of closure You know what i mean? With the passing.
00:22:32
Speaker
And so with both of those dreams, like, well, one of them, it was he called me on the phone. And i remember being like, you know, because I was really upset after he passed, not at him, but at the situation and everything that was going on and the way that like my stepmom was dealing with.
00:22:48
Speaker
his passing. And I'm just like, you don't even know what's going on. Like, you know, she's doing X, Y, Z. This is not what you wanted. Like you didn't want to be buried. You wanted to be cremated, all of these things. And he yeah on the phone was like, I'm not worried about it. You shouldn't be either like type of thing. And I thought, okay. and And then I remember like, cause whenever my dad passed away, I was almost nine months pregnant with Avery and I had a very hard time with his passing. And i it took me a really long time to like get out of that like immense grief where I would just, you know, break down all the time. And then another dream that i had he visited me in my house and i could see like exactly like what he was wearing.
00:23:35
Speaker
I can still see it to this day, exactly what he was wearing. How he appeared was in like his mid 30s where he looked the most healthiest. Like he was very happy. There was like a light shining from behind him, which is also very common in visitation dreams. And then in the dream, he just he was smiling at me.
00:23:54
Speaker
he told me he loved me and he like pulled me in for a hug. And like, what's crazy about that too, is like years later, whenever I visited with a medium, she, how she my dad presented her himself to her was in the same outfit.
00:24:10
Speaker
that he presented himself to me. And I'm just like, that is just wild. Like, yeah. But yeah. So, but like I said, I visited or I have um dreamed about my dad all the time. I'll dream i'll have dreams about where he just appears in my dreams, but I know it's not a visitation dream. It's just, yeah i sometimes our dreams are weird and we have dreams about random situations that have happened or haven't happened and your brain just does crazy things.
00:24:36
Speaker
But yeah, but With like the dreams that you've had too, like I've also had dreams about other people where like other people come to me. And usually with those, like I was mentioning earlier, it happens when I'm first falling asleep, I will have, and I didn't know at first that these were like spirits coming in because yeah you're just so open to receiving that as you're falling asleep. And while you're asleep that like I will have, I'll be visited by, like I started writing them down to like a
00:25:07
Speaker
you know, this spirit came to visit me and it's like, they were just showing me like who they were. it kind of felt like, it's not like yeah asking for help or anything, but like, i remember this one dream, like this, this guy approached me and I could see like a, behind him, there was like the, don't know what, what is it called? Like the subway in New York or something. Like I knew it was in New York. i knew it was a subway going past and he turned around, took off his shirt and showed me the tattoos on his back.
00:25:34
Speaker
And I'm just like, I don't know what do with that. But thanks for showing me. Yeah. Appreciate it. Yeah. And so like I started writing them down just to be like, oh i wonder if this is a situation of maybe I'm going to meet one of their family members and they want me to like tell them that they came to me in my dream or something. But yeah, I'm not not really been like, oh do you have an uncle who lived in New York? You know what I mean? Yeah. Yeah.
00:26:00
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, that's like Every time I have one of mine, like sometimes I'll like try to Google like elements of things that happen because I'm like, was this real? Like did this actually happen?
00:26:13
Speaker
Because they are very realistic and sometimes like I'll even like wake up and like I vividly remember this one that i had where this man got shot in the head.
00:26:28
Speaker
And I woke up with a migraine. Like my head hurts so bad. And I had this dream like multiple times within like a month. Like it just kept like reoccurring, reoccurring.
00:26:40
Speaker
And it was like everyone in the dream was never people I had met. The location was not a place that I had been. like And every single time I woke up with like a headache or a migraine.
00:26:53
Speaker
No fucking clue. so I was like, yeah man shot and headed, like describing the location as best as I could. Nothing. But I mean, like, it's such like vague details that I'm like.
00:27:04
Speaker
And it's like, OK, well, if you're going to show me that and put me through that, at least give me some more. Give me something. Give me something. Because it could be like a visitation dream of like, I need somebody to see what has happened to me.
00:27:18
Speaker
Yeah. And that's like when I, so I've like always had these. And I remember when I was younger, I had brought it up to my mom. Like I had these weird fucking dreams and I don't understand what's going on.
00:27:28
Speaker
And my mom was like, oh, well, your great grandma was like a, like a psychic medium.
Linking Dreams to Psychic Abilities
00:27:33
Speaker
And she used to help like find missing persons for the police in Canada. And I'm like, okay, so like, are you saying I, like, I have some kind of weird ability?
00:27:43
Speaker
yeah maybe. You know, I was like, young at the time. i didn't know. And then like, I feel like this is such a hard thing to research. So it's like, i fuck if I know like what's going on But it's like you said, you know, like when you're falling asleep, like you are so sensitive to these things.
00:28:02
Speaker
And I feel like both of us are also just like sensitive to this type of situation anyways. yeah So, I mean, i don't know. Who knows? Yeah. It's not an easy thing to research. It's not an easy thing to like understand if you don't have like a working knowledge of it, I guess.
00:28:21
Speaker
But I think like doing this research alone, I was like finding stuff that I was like, oh, that's interesting. Right. Yeah. Well, and i feel like as well, too, it's for some people, it's hard for them to believe you whenever you say like, oh, this happened in a dream.
00:28:38
Speaker
Yeah. They're like, well, but, you know, we all have crazy imaginations when we dream. And it's like, no, we don't realize how powerful dreams are. No. Well, and I feel like it's so different too. Like I have these dreams where i don't fucking know who these people are.
00:28:51
Speaker
Anthony will be like, I had the craziest dream last night. And he'll describe me and him. This is still one of the this has stuck with me forever. When we were younger, we used to watch Desperate Housewives like religiously. Like we would sit on the couch and fucking watch it every week.
00:29:07
Speaker
And he had a dream that him and I were like ninjas and we were like the personal bodyguard of some character on this show. And he like went into like great detail of all these things we did and like people we fought and stuff.
00:29:20
Speaker
Those are like his dreams. And me, I'm like, yeah. So anyways, I dreamed about this person dying again. yeah It's like very different, different things. Like it's just a completely different like situation, I think.
00:29:36
Speaker
but I don't know. if you have like interesting dreams, we'd love to hear about them. Yeah, would. least I would. I'm always like, what is my dream about? i don't even know. Yes. Yeah. Tell us about your dreams. If you've had visitation dreams or any sort of spirit communication in your dreams, let us know. We'd love to hear about it.
00:30:06
