Season Finale Announcement
00:00:01
Speaker
It's the season three finale, baby.
00:00:08
Speaker
Let's dive right in.
Introductions and Season Reflection
00:00:33
Speaker
Welcome back to Making Waves, an NFL confidence pool podcast.
00:00:38
Speaker
I'm your host, Mac.
00:00:40
Speaker
And I'm your super sad host, Bob.
00:00:42
Speaker
And this is the last time we have to hear the words, baby, coming out of Bob's mouth for the next, I don't know, eight or so months, nine months.
00:00:52
Speaker
It is a sad day in terms of that.
00:00:56
Speaker
Well, it's a sad day in terms of football, but is it a sad day in terms of not hearing baby for nine months?
00:01:02
Speaker
I was going to say, I don't know why you said the last time we have to hear it, like it's some sort of chore.
00:01:08
Speaker
Don't we all love to hear that?
00:01:09
Speaker
It's quite a chore.
00:01:10
Speaker
It is quite a chore.
00:01:12
Speaker
I think the more accurate term is, oh, it's the last time we get to hear that in that many months.
00:01:19
Speaker
Actually, it's really only like seven months.
00:01:21
Speaker
February usually starts in September.
00:01:24
Speaker
So we'll be recording one at the end and probably end of August.
00:01:30
Speaker
So yeah, seven months.
00:01:32
Speaker
Seven months until you get to hear that again.
00:01:35
Speaker
Until we get to hear baby again.
00:01:40
Speaker
And if anybody wants to hear it in the off season, just shoot Bob a text.
00:01:43
Speaker
I'm sure he'd be happy to leave you a little voice memo where he's reciting different made up making waves intros.
00:01:51
Speaker
I am always happy to send a quick voice note saying, baby.
00:01:55
Speaker
So yeah, just hit me up.
00:01:57
Speaker
My phone number, let me just shoot it to everybody here, is obviously 810-588-90.
00:02:04
Speaker
Oh, almost gave away somebody else's number there.
00:02:12
Speaker
I always wondered why you had to go into your own phone to look up your phone number.
00:02:16
Speaker
I was like, how do you not know your phone number by heart?
00:02:18
Speaker
You're like, is Bob struggling there a little bit?
00:02:23
Speaker
When you said 810, I was like, I'm pretty sure that's not what your phone number starts with.
00:02:28
Speaker
You're like, are you from B-Town number two as well?
00:02:32
Speaker
No, no, I'm from B-Town number one, the OG Birmingham 248.
00:02:35
Speaker
No, you're not from Brighton, but agree to disagree because we could go on for forever.
00:02:41
Speaker
And you already promised me this was going to be a very quick episode, so.
00:02:44
Speaker
I did promise Nick is making dinner.
00:02:48
Speaker
As everybody knows, the real wave riders that it's Max, a lovely wife.
00:02:52
Speaker
And yeah, dinner is going to be served.
00:02:54
Speaker
So I got to hop on a plane.
00:02:55
Speaker
I got to head to Asheville and I want to end the season on a actual promise that is kept this episode.
00:03:04
Speaker
will be less than mac wants me to say 30 but i will not change my opinion no way there's no this episode will be less than 25 i said originally 20 oh you said 20 originally we're at 3 17 already uh it will be less than 25 minutes cross my heart hope to die stick a needle in my eye so 25 you heard it here first let us know which eye you want to be blind in because she doesn't believe me folks
00:03:32
Speaker
No, I don't think anybody does at this point in the season.
00:03:36
Speaker
I've never told a lie.
00:03:37
Speaker
We've been around now for three seasons of Making Waves.
Time Management and Personal Insights
00:03:40
Speaker
People know that Bob's got false promises about timing.
00:03:44
Speaker
Just day in and day out.
00:03:47
Speaker
You're one of those guys, Bob, that if we're like on a walk in Chicago and you're like, oh yeah, I know this place.
00:03:53
Speaker
It's just around the corner.
00:03:54
Speaker
It's like five minutes away.
00:03:55
Speaker
It takes like 15 minutes, 20 minutes to walk to this place.
00:04:00
Speaker
Is that why would I just- In all of your life.
00:04:02
Speaker
Like it's not just a podcast.
00:04:04
Speaker
It's just like daily life.
00:04:06
Speaker
I haven't done it today.
00:04:07
Speaker
I definitely didn't tell you I was gonna be done with my work thing at 430.
00:04:09
Speaker
And then it was five.
00:04:10
Speaker
And I didn't text you right after saying I'll be home in 15 to 20.
00:04:13
Speaker
And then it was 40.
00:04:14
Speaker
That did not just happen.
00:04:16
Speaker
That's actually a perfect example.
00:04:19
Speaker
Literally just happened.
00:04:20
Speaker
I just add on about 1520 minutes to everything Bob says.
00:04:24
Speaker
And I'm like, Okay, that's probably accurate.
00:04:27
Speaker
Well, that's ridiculous because nobody else in my life does that.
00:04:30
Speaker
And the fact that my best friend is just adding on time.
00:04:33
Speaker
Do I need to take a look in the mirror and figure some shiz out?
00:04:37
Speaker
No, it makes you who you are.
00:04:40
Speaker
I appreciate that.
00:04:41
Speaker
The way writers really love you.
00:04:44
Speaker
Unfortunately, one thing that we can't change the time of, sorry, were you going to say something about us loving you?
00:04:50
Speaker
It was just going to be unnecessary blabble and we got to keep this under 25.
00:04:54
Speaker
I was going to say, unfortunately, one thing we can't change the time of is the inevitable offseason, which we just discussed is about seven months long that we are about to be heading
Offseason Plans and Friendship
00:05:03
Speaker
I know the NFL is really trying to stretch it and make important things.
00:05:07
Speaker
They've got the draft in April.
00:05:08
Speaker
They've got the schedule release in May.
00:05:11
Speaker
A bunch of changes in the offseason will happen with players being traded, picked up, free agents, all those things in the offseason.
00:05:20
Speaker
But, I mean, really, we've got seven months until we see another football game after this Sunday.
00:05:25
Speaker
And I just really wanted to check in how you were doing, you know, mentally, physically, emotionally, all the things.
00:05:31
Speaker
Well, I guess I'm already definitely not doing great.
00:05:35
Speaker
Your answer to this question will definitely have a big impact.
00:05:41
Speaker
I guess a big weight on my answer.
00:05:43
Speaker
Are we going to be talking between now and the next episode?
00:05:46
Speaker
Or is this like, we're signing off Wade Rodgers.
00:05:49
Speaker
We'll talk to you at the start of December.
00:05:51
Speaker
And then Max, like, yeah, talk to you at the start of December.
00:05:55
Speaker
Start of December.
00:05:56
Speaker
Oh, pushing it all the way to December.
00:06:00
Speaker
You're curious if you and I will continue a friendship outside of the podcast.
00:06:05
Speaker
That is going to be a big weight.
00:06:07
Speaker
I mean, since September, all we really ever talk about is football.
00:06:10
Speaker
So can our friendship continue beyond football?
00:06:14
Speaker
Oh, well, I was already.
00:06:16
Speaker
We'll have to wait and see if it can stand the test of time.
00:06:19
Speaker
It's made it pretty far.
00:06:22
Speaker
Maybe 2024 is our year.
00:06:24
Speaker
We've made it over 10 years.
00:06:25
Speaker
And they say if you're best friends with someone for 10 years, you're in it for life.
00:06:28
Speaker
So we've crossed a lot of these.
00:06:30
Speaker
Is that what they say?
00:06:32
Speaker
So I think you might be stuck with me.
00:06:35
Speaker
You know, till the end.
00:06:36
Speaker
And she sounds so excited about that, which I am really pumped about.
00:06:40
Speaker
I do got to say, there is a part of me that is excited, not excited to say goodbye to this podcast.
00:06:47
Speaker
But there's a part of me that's excited to just get back to Mac and Bob things, not just football 24-7.
00:06:55
Speaker
I couldn't agree more with that.
00:06:57
Speaker
I love our football stuff, but I love our other stuff just as much, if not more.
00:07:01
Speaker
And that's the important stuff.
00:07:04
Speaker
Obviously, all jokes aside.
00:07:06
Speaker
Let's just sign off right now.
00:07:08
Speaker
See you in September.
00:07:12
Speaker
Now, now, now, now, now.
00:07:15
Speaker
All jokes aside, obviously, and to answer your question, I'm very bummed.
00:07:20
Speaker
I know me and you, one of our favorite seasons of the entire year.
00:07:24
Speaker
I call it football season.
00:07:25
Speaker
It passes through two distinct seasons, fall and winter.
00:07:29
Speaker
For us, it's football season here on Making Waves.
00:07:31
Speaker
And yeah, it's been a great season three.
00:07:34
Speaker
Your boys, I know, had an amazing season.
00:07:37
Speaker
We had some big highs with me winning the head-to-head, you having to eat waffles.
00:07:42
Speaker
We've had some lows.
00:07:45
Speaker
Lions getting knocked out in the NFC Championship game.
00:07:51
Speaker
Obviously, you know, the Bears not making the playoffs and being a little worse than we expected.
00:07:56
Speaker
But I see the highs overshadow the lows.
00:07:59
Speaker
And I am very sad that football is very fleeting right now.
00:08:05
Speaker
How are you feeling?
00:08:05
Speaker
How are you feeling?
00:08:07
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, I have to agree.
00:08:08
Speaker
There's some excitement in terms of opening up Sundays and opening up schedules and things of that nature as we head into the spring season.
00:08:18
Speaker
But yeah, it's a bummer.
00:08:20
Speaker
I love watching football.
00:08:21
Speaker
I love watching the Lions.
00:08:23
Speaker
Yeah, it's fun to watch, but I don't know.
00:08:27
Speaker
I don't know if you feel this way.
00:08:28
Speaker
Like, obviously, the playoffs were fun, but I don't know if you feel this way that once the Bears are out, that it's kind of like, yeah, okay, I'm good, you know?
00:08:37
Speaker
Yeah, I definitely was cheering for your boys.
00:08:40
Speaker
Obviously, I was so excited to be with you and Nick in person for the AFC and NFC Championship Games.
00:08:46
Speaker
But yeah, it's weird when football is over.
00:08:48
Speaker
It's like this little lull between the end of football and I'm a big baseball guy.
00:08:52
Speaker
So opening day in the Cubs is like a two-month hiatus of like, oof, we got to get through winter.
00:08:59
Speaker
What's going to get us through?
00:09:00
Speaker
You watch the March Madness.
00:09:02
Speaker
You go with a lot of different sports.
00:09:04
Speaker
Football is really like the only sport I watch.
00:09:07
Speaker
So without football, I'm like, whew, what am I going to do with my time?
00:09:11
Speaker
I mean, do you think Nick, do you think she's pretty bummed about football being over?
00:09:14
Speaker
Do you think she's happy to fully have her wife back for the next?
00:09:19
Speaker
Probably the latter, but she's a great sport.
00:09:21
Speaker
She watches with me.
00:09:22
Speaker
She watches the Lions.
00:09:23
Speaker
She's a great supporter of the Lions.
00:09:26
Speaker
And she's a great sport, always supporting when I want to watch football.
00:09:29
Speaker
But I'm sure she won't mind if we could go on a nice walk on a Sunday.
00:09:34
Speaker
I'm sure she won't mind.
00:09:35
Speaker
I think the amount of books that she's read here in 2024 might take a little bit of a plummet.
00:09:41
Speaker
It's a lot when football's on.
00:09:44
Speaker
There's a lot of books being read.
00:09:46
Speaker
She's been crushing the books, but I saw Nick in person during the NFC Championship game, and she was fully engaged in the game.
00:09:54
Speaker
I was like, man, Matt.
00:09:54
Speaker
When the Lions are on, she is fully, fully engaged.
00:09:57
Speaker
But when I'm watching other games, she's probably reading a book.
00:10:01
Speaker
She's like, what the heck is this?
00:10:02
Speaker
This isn't the Lions.
00:10:03
Speaker
Why are we watching this game?
00:10:04
Speaker
So I know we're both very sad.
00:10:07
Speaker
And yeah, next time we're on this podcast, Mac is going to be, she's going to be 31.
00:10:13
Speaker
So a lot of changes between now and the fall.
00:10:17
Speaker
Mac's actually going to be 31 in a couple months here.
00:10:20
Speaker
And Bob's going to be aging apparently because his birthday's before mine.
00:10:24
Speaker
I'm going to be the exact same.
00:10:26
Speaker
I'm going to be 30-year-old Bob, sorry, 29-year-old Bob, and ready to hit season four right in the mouth.
NFL Coaching Changes Discussion
00:10:36
Speaker
Well, I know, obviously, we're heading into the offseason, and we talked about how there are a lot of changes to teams, but arguably none bigger than the head coaching position, which there have been a lot of vacancies so far this season in terms of
00:10:53
Speaker
coaches being let go either throughout the season or directly after the season.
00:10:57
Speaker
I know we dropped some big names like Ron Rivera, Bill Belichick, Pete Carroll, some big names that have been around the league for a very long time that were let go of their positions or they parted ways from their current team.
00:11:11
Speaker
So we have had some hirings.
00:11:14
Speaker
And so I just want to run through some of these hirings real quick, see if you had any take on any of them.
00:11:20
Speaker
So, so first up Atlanta Falcons, they hired the former Rams defensive coordinator, Raheem Morris.
00:11:28
Speaker
I don't know too much about him other than, I mean, the Rams have had a very solid defense, but any, any comments there from, from you?
00:11:37
Speaker
I, if I'm not mistaken, I'm looking at it right now.
00:11:39
Speaker
So he was the head coach.
00:11:42
Speaker
He's been, he's been a head coach in the league before he was a Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach.
00:11:48
Speaker
all the way back in 2002.
00:11:49
Speaker
And then he was their head coach again back in, yeah, the late 2000.
00:11:58
Speaker
So he's definitely been around the game for a long time.
00:12:01
Speaker
I know he's like a big time players coach and the Falcons have had a couple of coaches recently that players did not love playing for.
00:12:09
Speaker
So as far as I'm concerned, I also don't know too much about the guy.
00:12:13
Speaker
I think that's going to be a pretty popular hire.
00:12:16
Speaker
So could, uh, it'd be good things brewing in hot Lana.
00:12:20
Speaker
And I know you don't see that.
00:12:23
Speaker
You said you don't have much, much of a take on, uh, Mr. Raheem.
00:12:27
Speaker
I don't know much about him, but I agree.
00:12:29
Speaker
I mean, I think the Falcons have some good young talent, so hopefully he can help mold that and shape that.
00:12:36
Speaker
And then a competitor for them is the Carolina Panthers, who have not been quite competitive, so they definitely need a shakeup.
00:12:44
Speaker
They have hired the previous Bucs offensive coordinator, Dave Canales.
00:12:50
Speaker
Don't really have much of a take on him either.
00:12:53
Speaker
Bucs obviously have had a solid offense in terms of
00:12:57
Speaker
uh, Tom, when Tom Brady was there and then they got back pretty far with, with Baker this year.
00:13:01
Speaker
So they've had a solid offense.
00:13:03
Speaker
We'll see if he can help mold Bryce young.
00:13:05
Speaker
Cause that was not a great intro year to the NFL.
00:13:09
Speaker
Wasn't a great start.
00:13:10
Speaker
And yeah, unfortunately I don't know anything about the guy.
00:13:12
Speaker
So fingers crossed for your, uh, current home States football team, but I'm not feeling great.
00:13:17
Speaker
Uh, I know I think the Panthers have got some work to do for sure.
00:13:21
Speaker
Things would be a lot different if they had rights to their current number one pick.
00:13:25
Speaker
But unfortunately for them, my boys got that pick, baby.
00:13:33
Speaker
But yeah, moving over to the Las Vegas Raiders.
00:13:35
Speaker
So Antonio Pierce took over as the interim head coach, and they officially hired him as the head coach.
00:13:42
Speaker
I think that was a great move for them.
00:13:44
Speaker
Pierce is doing a phenomenal job as interim.
00:13:47
Speaker
He seemed to be a similar, as you said, like a player's coach in one that the guys kind of rallied behind.
00:13:52
Speaker
So I think that's a good move on their part for the Raiders.
00:13:57
Speaker
The Las Vegas Raiders.
00:13:59
Speaker
Now that's a sound bite that we're going to miss for the next seven months.
00:14:02
Speaker
That's a good one for sure.
00:14:04
Speaker
That's one of my favorite McKen's sound bites.
00:14:08
Speaker
I, I definitely echo what you said.
00:14:09
Speaker
Seemed like it was a good fit when he was in interim.
00:14:11
Speaker
So smart for a team to stick with what was working when, when a coach had a chance.
00:14:19
Speaker
Big change, obviously, was the New England Patriots parting ways with Bill Belichick.
00:14:23
Speaker
Derrod Mayo, who was the linebackers coach for the Patriots, I had heard that it was written into Bill Belichick's contract that if he was to ever part ways, Derrod Mayo would take over as head coach.
00:14:37
Speaker
So it was kind of already written in.
00:14:39
Speaker
They were able to not...
00:14:42
Speaker
go through any of the typical NFL hiring processes.
00:14:46
Speaker
There's a lot of different stipulations.
00:14:48
Speaker
They have to, you know, go through all these things to make sure it's equitable or at least attempt to, I know there's a lot of speculation that it actually is, but either way it was written in.
00:14:58
Speaker
So they were able to surpass all of that.
00:15:00
Speaker
And he just automatically took over as the head coach.
00:15:04
Speaker
I mean, if it was written in, I, that's,
00:15:07
Speaker
Obviously, they believe in him, but I don't know.
00:15:09
Speaker
There's a part of me that feels like the Patriots just need to go in a completely different direction.
00:15:14
Speaker
And I'm not sure if keeping somebody who is on Belichick staff is doing that.
00:15:19
Speaker
I don't know if it's making that statement.
00:15:21
Speaker
Man, I was kind of hungry, and I know you were as well, but that was a juicy nugget.
00:15:25
Speaker
I had no idea there was.
00:15:27
Speaker
So was that like a hand-picked guy that Belichick had?
00:15:30
Speaker
Like, he's like, when I leave, this guy's got to eat a coach?
00:15:32
Speaker
It sounds like it.
00:15:33
Speaker
Yeah, I don't know.
00:15:34
Speaker
I don't know the history there in terms of, like, if they had worked together for a long time.
00:15:40
Speaker
But yeah, it was handwritten in, well, it was probably typed.
00:15:45
Speaker
I don't know if it was handwritten, but it was written into Belichick's contract that, yeah, if he left, Gerard Mayo would take over.
00:15:54
Speaker
Damn, he is only 37 years old too.
00:15:57
Speaker
So he has got to be one of the youngest coaches in the league now.
00:16:00
Speaker
And he was a former player of Belichick's.
00:16:03
Speaker
I don't know if they had like a great relationship or he was like... Yeah, it must have been something.
00:16:07
Speaker
He must have seen something in him or loved something about him.
00:16:10
Speaker
But I've already seen like clips and snippets and already it is a different culture.
00:16:15
Speaker
Belichick had always kind of been like a... Almost kind of like grunting his way, I feel like, through press conferences and never really smiled.
00:16:22
Speaker
And I saw the first interview with Gerard Mayo and different atmosphere.
00:16:26
Speaker
He seemed very open, very, you know, I don't know, more, more boisterous and more of a personality, I guess you could say.
00:16:33
Speaker
So I don't know, maybe that, that would be enough of a shift, but scheme wise, I feel like it's going to stay the same.
00:16:39
Speaker
And I feel like the Patriots need a 180 right now.
00:16:42
Speaker
And I definitely feel like Belichick did set the bar super high with his personality and his just like love for like reporters and like life overall.
00:16:50
Speaker
He also is like a big time fashion icon with the, uh, with the cutoff, um, arms on the hoodie.
00:16:59
Speaker
Mayo's got some huge shoes to fill in a lot of aspects, but I'd say fashion and, uh, just overall like enthusiasm is, are going to be his top two.
00:17:08
Speaker
No, all jokes aside, I've said that like eight times this podcast.
00:17:14
Speaker
It's already been 17 minutes, so you've said it like every two minutes.
00:17:17
Speaker
It's already at 17?
00:17:21
Speaker
Oh, and that is the end of the coach update.
00:17:24
Speaker
No, I was about to say all jokes aside again.
00:17:29
Speaker
I completely agree with what you said.
00:17:31
Speaker
The Patriot way definitely spoiled after Brady left, and things went a little astray.
00:17:39
Speaker
So, yeah, it's definitely like a new culture with like obviously a way younger coach.
00:17:43
Speaker
It seems like he's a little bit more like boisterous and like energetic.
00:17:46
Speaker
So I'm sure the players will love that.
00:17:48
Speaker
But if it's like the same type of scheme, it's like, are they really changing too much?
00:17:51
Speaker
So that will be a yeah, that will be a head coaching job to watch moving forward.
00:17:57
Speaker
And the Patriots have the number three pick in the draft.
00:18:00
Speaker
People are speculating that they're done with Mac number two, AKA Mac Jones, and they're going to pick a young QB at number three.
00:18:07
Speaker
So it could be a lot of changes in New England.
00:18:10
Speaker
And frankly, I think a lot of Patriots fans are ready for that.
00:18:14
Speaker
We'll see how that looks next season.
00:18:18
Speaker
That's a good point.
00:18:21
Speaker
I'm excited to see how that plays out.
00:18:23
Speaker
As we look at some of the other ones.
00:18:25
Speaker
So we had the Tennessee Titans had...
00:18:28
Speaker
a vacancy after parting ways with Mike Brable.
00:18:32
Speaker
They have hired former Bengals offensive coordinator, Brian Callahan.
00:18:38
Speaker
For the Seattle Seahawks.
00:18:40
Speaker
Obviously that was a big one that opened up with Pete Carroll retaining, being retained in the organization, but no longer in the head coaching position.
00:18:49
Speaker
They have hired former Ravens defensive coordinator, Mike McDonald.
00:18:53
Speaker
So with both of these two, I don't know much about him, but they both come from,
00:18:58
Speaker
Great reputations in terms of what their teams have done, both offensively for the Bengals, for Brian Callahan, and then defensively for the Ravens, for Mike McDonald.
00:19:08
Speaker
So bringing a lot of great knowledge and spreading a lot of the wealth.
00:19:13
Speaker
So we'll see how they do in their head coaching positions.
00:19:24
Speaker
Got to give a quick shout out to Taylor.
00:19:25
Speaker
Big reputation, but.
00:19:29
Speaker
Got to give a quick shout out to Taylor that wouldn't be making it.
00:19:31
Speaker
New album dropping April 19th.
00:19:34
Speaker
I should know this.
00:19:38
Speaker
I saw this so many times on stories at night.
00:19:41
Speaker
Dead Poet Society.
00:19:48
Speaker
Frustrated Poets Society.
00:19:51
Speaker
You literally just said it.
00:19:52
Speaker
I still get it wrong.
00:19:53
Speaker
Tortured Poets Society coming in April.
00:19:57
Speaker
She killed the grandkids.
00:20:05
Speaker
Tortured Poets Department.
00:20:11
Speaker
And yeah, I think we might have an episode.
00:20:16
Speaker
That is two days after my dear co-host here turns 31.
00:20:20
Speaker
What a happy birthday present to me.
00:20:23
Speaker
Happy birthday to you, 31.
00:20:29
Speaker
Now we're at 20 minutes and 30 seconds.
00:20:32
Speaker
Yeah, now back to football.
00:20:35
Speaker
So the Washington Commanders, this was kind of a, I would say, controversial hire.
00:20:41
Speaker
They hired Dan Quinn, who was the former Cowboys defensive coordinator, which he has notoriously done very well in regular season.
00:20:50
Speaker
Postseason, not so much.
00:20:52
Speaker
So I think that's why it was a bit controversial.
00:20:55
Speaker
Commanders fans were a bit...
00:20:57
Speaker
nervous about that hire from the, from what I saw.
00:21:03
Speaker
One that was not controversial though, and I'll let you touch on Dan Quinn if you want, but one that I think we really need to talk about the biggest one, in my opinion, Los Angeles chargers have hired former Michigan Wolverines head coach, Jim Harbaugh.
00:21:17
Speaker
He's going back to the NFL and it seems to be that trophies follow Mr. Jim Harbaugh everywhere he goes.
00:21:25
Speaker
Does he have the Midas touch?
00:21:27
Speaker
Because everything he touches seems to turn to gold.
00:21:30
Speaker
Don't think that that was your advertisement for the episode.
00:21:32
Speaker
That was a really good one, though.
00:21:35
Speaker
But, yeah, he is the most recent NCAA national champion.
00:21:41
Speaker
The Harbaugh brothers are back in the NFL, and they actually play each other in Los Angeles in the regular season next year, so that's going to be a game to watch.
00:21:49
Speaker
Yes, I saw that on the good old Instagram because I scroll my life away most nights.
00:21:55
Speaker
But yeah, I mean, that was definitely the biggest hire, I'd say, like highest profile hire of the offseason.
00:22:04
Speaker
I think that's going to bring the biggest dividends for the Los Angeles Chargers.
00:22:09
Speaker
And Harbaugh, in his career as a coach, has great relationships with the quarterbacks.
00:22:14
Speaker
He had Andrew Luck at Stanford.
00:22:16
Speaker
Then he had Colin Kaepernick and Alex Smith with the 49ers, and they both excelled.
00:22:21
Speaker
And now most recently, J.J.
00:22:22
Speaker
McCarthy and Michigan.
00:22:24
Speaker
And he has shot up.
00:22:27
Speaker
So Herbert, people are like, oh, his potential has not really been brought to fruition.
00:22:36
Speaker
But I think he and Herbert are going to have a great relationship in Los Angeles.
00:22:42
Speaker
And I think a lot of people are going to be picking the Chargers to have a bounce back here.
00:22:46
Speaker
So huge hire in the city of angels, baby.
00:22:53
Speaker
Snuck in another baby just for good measure.
00:22:56
Speaker
But yes, no, I completely agree.
00:22:57
Speaker
I think this is a really telltale season for Herbert and the rest of that squad out there.
00:23:05
Speaker
There have been a lot of high expectations that they have not met over the past several years.
00:23:10
Speaker
And if this next year does not go well or meet some of those expectations, I could certainly see them moving on from a lot of those guys because it's like, if not, then like, when's it going to happen?
00:23:22
Speaker
It's not the coach's fault.
00:23:23
Speaker
Harbaugh's the champion.
00:23:24
Speaker
He's got the Midas touch, as Mac just said.
00:23:26
Speaker
So if he can't figure it out with this group of guys, and Eckler definitely had a little bit of a downturn, so that'll be something to watch.
00:23:32
Speaker
But with Bosa and Mac, Mac number three.
00:23:35
Speaker
Sorry, that's Mac number two.
00:23:36
Speaker
Mac Jones is Mac number three.
00:23:38
Speaker
Michael is his number one.
00:23:39
Speaker
It's going to be a big year and no more excuses in Los Angeles.
00:23:42
Speaker
So that's going to be, yeah, it's going to be interesting to watch.
00:23:46
Speaker
I'm already getting excited for next year and we've got a ways to go, but.
00:23:51
Speaker
I'm getting jazzed.
00:23:54
Speaker
It's going to be some good football to come, but.
00:23:56
Speaker
And sorry to interrupt.
00:23:59
Speaker
I just wanted to say we got one minute to finish two ads and our predictions.
00:24:02
Speaker
Or else there's going to be a needle in my eye.
00:24:05
Speaker
I was just going to say, I know we've got a long way to wait, but we don't have too much longer to wait for our first advertisement.
00:24:15
Speaker
Let's hear it, Bob.
00:24:16
Speaker
What do you got to wrap the season?
00:24:19
Speaker
It's time for a word from our sponsor.
00:24:23
Speaker
I'm going to miss that too.
00:24:26
Speaker
This last advertisement, second to last, spoiler alert, episode of...
00:24:34
Speaker
Second to last ad of the last Super Bowl episode of this season is brought to you by what's a brand that I really love?
00:24:44
Speaker
What's a brand that I really love?
00:24:46
Speaker
Trust the Midas touch.
00:24:48
Speaker
Trust the Midas touch.
00:24:53
Speaker
If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands.
00:24:57
Speaker
If you need a new tire, clap your hands.
00:25:01
Speaker
If you ran over a nail or if you hit a snail and your tire's a little low, go to Midas.
00:25:09
Speaker
Go to Midas for a two-for-one tire exchange.
00:25:15
Speaker
Low tires, burst tires, old tires.
00:25:20
Speaker
Get a new one for $95.99 or two tires for $315.67.
00:25:22
Speaker
Trust the Midas touch, baby.
00:25:34
Speaker
I have a couple questions about your pricing, sir.
00:25:37
Speaker
I don't have any answers.
00:25:38
Speaker
It's one for $95, two for $315.
00:25:40
Speaker
Take it or leave it.
00:25:43
Speaker
But I thought it was also two for one.
00:25:47
Speaker
Yeah, I had a really cool vision for that ad.
00:25:51
Speaker
And then I was singing, if you're happy, you know what, clap your hands.
00:25:54
Speaker
I just lost it all.
00:25:56
Speaker
I will not answer for the pricing format or minus.
00:25:59
Speaker
I thought you were going to say, if there's a nail in your tire, clap your hands.
00:26:02
Speaker
If there's a needle in my eye, clap your hands.
00:26:04
Speaker
Because it was like right at 25 minutes.
00:26:07
Speaker
See, that would have made a lot more sense.
00:26:09
Speaker
I wish I could think on the fly like my co-host does.
00:26:13
Speaker
Oh, no, it's all good.
00:26:16
Speaker
Well, everybody came from the Super Bowl predictions.
00:26:19
Speaker
We haven't even gotten there yet.
00:26:20
Speaker
But now, without further ado, let's get into these Super
Super Bowl Anticipation
00:26:23
Speaker
Luckily, there's only one game, so I'm hopeful it'll be sort of quick.
00:26:27
Speaker
But as we have mentioned in last week's episode...
00:26:33
Speaker
The teams heading to the Super Bowl representing the AFC for like the millionth time.
00:26:40
Speaker
Fifth out of the last six years.
00:26:43
Speaker
The... Getting old.
00:26:44
Speaker
Kansas City Chiefs representing the NFC from the Bay, San Francisco all the way, coming from California.
00:26:55
Speaker
the san francisco 49ers in this quarter weighing in at oh my god i was saying how much does the team weigh but i felt like that's like what it sounded like it seemed like you were like getting ready to like announce the boxing match i was like hey let's get ready to rumble i'm like i'm just letting her do it she's killing this keep it going
00:27:18
Speaker
But anyways, yes, this Sunday, February 11th, 6.30 p.m.
00:27:22
Speaker
Eastern Standard Time.
00:27:23
Speaker
Those two teams are going to face off in the city of Las Vegas.
00:27:27
Speaker
And I'm just curious, Bob, what are your thoughts?
00:27:29
Speaker
What's your take on the game?
00:27:32
Speaker
I know there's not really any big injuries to report on, so we're just good old-fashioned fight between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers.
00:27:42
Speaker
Just a good old fashioned fight.
00:27:44
Speaker
Mac has been ready to run through a brick wall from that announcement.
00:27:47
Speaker
The two teams weighing in from the coasts and then the Midwest.
00:27:52
Speaker
Yeah, it's going to be, it's going to be a heavyweight battle.
00:27:55
Speaker
It's a rematch of 2020.
00:27:59
Speaker
We hate to see it.
00:28:00
Speaker
Can we get some new teams?
00:28:02
Speaker
Can we get some new teams?
00:28:04
Speaker
It would have been nice to see the Ravens.
00:28:06
Speaker
It would have been nice to see the Detroit Lions.
00:28:08
Speaker
Obviously, you can't have your cake and eat it too, apparently.
00:28:10
Speaker
So here we are, stuck with freaking Mahomes and Shanahan again.
00:28:16
Speaker
I think it's going to be really quality football.
00:28:19
Speaker
I think it's going to be a good game.
00:28:20
Speaker
I think there's going to be a lot of defense with Bosa, Young, Chris Jones.
00:28:25
Speaker
I think there's going to be obviously a lot of offense with Debo, McCaffrey, Mahomes, Kelsey.
00:28:30
Speaker
We've heard these names.
00:28:31
Speaker
They've gotten shoved down our throat year after year after year, but they keep on winning when it matters.
00:28:38
Speaker
Me and Mac were talking about this off-air.
00:28:41
Speaker
Earlier this week, I know for a fact we both agree with who's going to win.
00:28:47
Speaker
I just think it's so hard at this point to bet against Patty Boy and Andy Reid and Travis and the power of Taylor flying from Japan, making it there after winning all her hardware.
00:29:04
Speaker
I don't know if she's actually going to make it there, but maybe.
00:29:07
Speaker
Is this breaking news that she's not going to make it?
00:29:10
Speaker
Well, I don't know, but I don't know.
00:29:13
Speaker
It's going to be a lot.
00:29:14
Speaker
Tyler's got bigger fish to fry.
00:29:16
Speaker
She's got really big fish to fry that don't include the Super Bowl.
00:29:19
Speaker
She's kind of a busy woman, so wouldn't be surprised if she didn't make it.
00:29:22
Speaker
But it's in Vegas.
00:29:25
Speaker
First time ever, and it's going to be an awesome game.
00:29:28
Speaker
But my final prediction is if Mahomes and Kelsey play the way we expect and have gotten used to them playing in these games,
00:29:38
Speaker
My final score prediction is, drum roll please.
00:29:46
Speaker
The San Francisco 49ers 21 and the Kansas City Chiefs 27.
00:29:54
Speaker
Mahomes wins his third Super Bowl and the Chiefs win back to back.
00:30:02
Speaker
What do you have, McKenz?
00:30:05
Speaker
And I got to plug my laptop in because it's about to die again.
00:30:08
Speaker
Yeah, we don't need a repeat of last week where Bob just absolutely cut out at the end and I was left with my pants around my ankles because I didn't know what to say.
00:30:20
Speaker
Anyways, yes, in terms of the teams that are facing off this weekend, unfortunately, I agree.
00:30:29
Speaker
I think it is very difficult to bet against Mahomes, especially considering what we saw from the 49ers the past few weeks.
00:30:38
Speaker
We saw them falter a little bit against the Packers and then also against the Lions.
00:30:44
Speaker
And the way that they won those games were through some pretty incredible comeback wins.
00:30:51
Speaker
My belief, though, is that if that happens, if you're down by that much against a team like the Chiefs,
00:30:58
Speaker
Coming back does not feel as plausible as it does against, let's face it, a Lions defense that hasn't been phenomenal all year, or let's face it, a Packers defense that hasn't been phenomenal all year.
00:31:10
Speaker
The same cannot be said for the Kansas City Chiefs defense.
00:31:13
Speaker
They have had arguably the best defense that Mahomes has ever been on a team with.
00:31:20
Speaker
So yes, their offense, the Chiefs, looking at the Chiefs side, has struggled a bit.
00:31:24
Speaker
They've started clicking in recent weeks.
00:31:27
Speaker
If they get ahead the way that teams have been able to get ahead against the 49ers, I just do not see the same comeback scenario happening.
00:31:36
Speaker
For them that, you know, lightning struck twice for them already.
00:31:40
Speaker
I don't think it's going to strike a third time, especially against such a solid defense as the Kansas city chiefs.
00:31:49
Speaker
And I didn't even think about the whole Niners coming back twice in a row.
00:31:54
Speaker
Lightning has struck twice.
00:31:56
Speaker
Having that happen three times is pretty, pretty minuscule.
00:31:59
Speaker
And this is an awesome chiefs defense.
00:32:02
Speaker
So awesome point there.
00:32:04
Speaker
Yeah, it is a really good Chiefs defense.
00:32:06
Speaker
And I was actually looking at some of the stats there.
00:32:11
Speaker
So they're pretty comparable in terms of the amount of points they've let up per game.
00:32:17
Speaker
The Chiefs have let up on average about 16 points per game, whereas the 49ers have let up about 18 points per game.
00:32:24
Speaker
So defensively, it's been good.
00:32:27
Speaker
for the 49ers as well.
00:32:28
Speaker
But like I said, the past two weeks haven't really shown that.
00:32:31
Speaker
And I think it's all about momentum heading into this game.
00:32:34
Speaker
On the offensive side, the 49ers have been able to put up a lot more offensively than the Chiefs.
00:32:40
Speaker
But again, momentum-wise, Chiefs heading into this week, I think that's shifted.
00:32:46
Speaker
I don't know that it's going to be enough to carry the 49ers over.
00:32:51
Speaker
I would be happy with a 49ers win.
00:32:53
Speaker
If the Lions lost to the Super Bowl winning team, I would feel like we were basically in the Super Bowl.
00:32:59
Speaker
I would love for the 49ers to win.
00:33:01
Speaker
I'll probably be cheering for them, at least to some extent.
00:33:05
Speaker
But yeah, I just don't know that I... I was just about to ask you who you're cheering for.
00:33:10
Speaker
I was back and forth on it.
00:33:11
Speaker
Do I really want them to win when they just beat us?
00:33:14
Speaker
I don't... I like have this like towards them now.
00:33:18
Speaker
But I think I would feel better if they go on and win the Super Bowl.
00:33:24
Speaker
I was wondering, I was like, I wonder who Max cheering for because like, obviously the team, you know, from the NFC just ripped your heart out and stomped on it.
00:33:32
Speaker
But then again, it's like, wow, that would not to, you know, bring up the ghost in the closet there, the past bad memories, but yeah,
00:33:39
Speaker
And then there's the other side of the token.
00:33:41
Speaker
Like, yeah, that would make your boys look pretty dang good.
00:33:44
Speaker
If like it took a crazy second half comeback to lose to the eventual Superbowl champion.
00:33:49
Speaker
So either way, it might hurt a little more though, knowing that we could have won then like if they go on and win,
00:33:57
Speaker
It might hurt a little bit more knowing like we should have won that game and then we could have won the Super Bowl.
00:34:02
Speaker
So I don't I don't know.
00:34:03
Speaker
I don't know that I have a huge rooting interest.
00:34:06
Speaker
I just kind of sick of the Chiefs.
00:34:08
Speaker
So but honestly, the 49ers, too, they've been really good.
00:34:11
Speaker
And they've been in the Super Bowl several times the past few years as well.
00:34:14
Speaker
I say take a hike.
00:34:18
Speaker
Share some success with the rest of us.
00:34:19
Speaker
You know, I saw this thing.
00:34:23
Speaker
heading into the games, the conference championship games, where it was like, who's cheering for who in which States are cheering for who.
00:34:32
Speaker
So for the AFC, it was like everybody, but Kansas city.
00:34:35
Speaker
And then a couple of like the Baltimore opponents, like the Steelers, like all those, or like in Pennsylvania and all those States were cheering for the Ravens and then vice versa for the, the lions 49ers.
00:34:49
Speaker
It was like everybody, but California was cheering for the, uh,
00:34:54
Speaker
except for obviously like Illinois and Green Bay and NFC North.
00:34:59
Speaker
We were cheering for your boys.
00:35:02
Speaker
Well, but then for the Super Bowl, I saw that the people, it was the same map and it was who's cheering for the 49ers and the Chiefs.
00:35:11
Speaker
And it was strictly just Kansas City Chiefs
00:35:16
Speaker
California, like Northern California, 49ers.
00:35:19
Speaker
And then every other state was just white.
00:35:21
Speaker
It was just not colored at all.
00:35:23
Speaker
Basically saying that nobody wants them in the Super Bowl.
00:35:26
Speaker
Nobody's here for them.
00:35:27
Speaker
We want to see neither team win and we're not happy and we're not going to support this game.
00:35:31
Speaker
Let's end this game in a tie.
00:35:34
Speaker
Let's literally just not play it and say nobody won this year.
00:35:40
Speaker
Yeah, I feel like a lot of people are very disappointed in this matchup, but it should be a good game.
Can Purdy Handle the Pressure?
00:35:44
Speaker
And another factor is, will Purdy be able to, yeah, handle the bright lights and the ultimate pressure when Mahomes, obviously, this is just another random Sunday in February.
00:35:55
Speaker
For Mahomes, this is just another day at the office at this point, so...
00:35:59
Speaker
Just another day at the office, just another big game.
00:36:02
Speaker
And yeah, I mean, it's not like he or any of the Chiefs has never been here before.
00:36:06
Speaker
So a lot of pressure for the youngster, Mr. Irrelevant.
00:36:10
Speaker
But that would be a pretty, pretty cool story to see a guy who was just drafted two years ago is the last pick in the draft to win the Super Bowl that quickly.
00:36:18
Speaker
So that's that's a reason to cheer for San Fran right there.
00:36:23
Speaker
So yeah, I think ultimately I'll be pulling for San Fran a little bit more than Kansas City.
00:36:28
Speaker
But I do unfortunately think that the Chiefs are going to come out on top.
00:36:34
Speaker
I believe that the score will be 27-24.
00:36:36
Speaker
27-24 and 27-21 are the two predictions.
00:36:38
Speaker
Oh, I thought you said 24-21.
00:36:49
Speaker
I very well might have.
00:36:51
Speaker
No, I think you did.
00:36:54
Speaker
I might have been thinking 24, 21.
00:36:56
Speaker
You might have been thinking about your guess that you were going to say a little later.
00:37:02
Speaker
All right, well, there you have it.
00:37:03
Speaker
Making Waves agrees unanimously that the Chiefs are going to win back-to-back, but you got to play the game.
00:37:09
Speaker
We'll see what happens.
00:37:10
Speaker
And now that we're close to the end of the episode, don't worry, Wave Riders.
00:37:16
Speaker
The last ad of the 2023-2024 season.
00:37:22
Speaker
Did she prepare the bar?
00:37:24
Speaker
Where will it be left at heading into the next season?
00:37:29
Speaker
I didn't mean to think of it that way.
00:37:33
Speaker
Without further ado, the last sponsor of Making Waves 2023-2024 NFL Season 3 is brought to you by Girl Scout Cookies.
00:37:52
Speaker
Girl Scout Cookies season is upon us.
00:37:55
Speaker
So buy from your local Girl Scouts only $5 a box.
00:37:59
Speaker
Girl Scout cookies, I'll give you a little hint.
Podcast Season Wrap-Up
00:38:04
Speaker
Girl Scout cookies, you better buy thin mints.
00:38:10
Speaker
Girl Scout cookies, don't forget about Caramel Delight.
00:38:15
Speaker
Girl Scout cookies, we'll see you next season.
00:38:19
Speaker
We're out of sight.
00:38:23
Speaker
Can you imagine if it just ended like that?
00:38:24
Speaker
That would be pretty good.
00:38:26
Speaker
That would be pretty good.
00:38:27
Speaker
I would have been sitting here like, I didn't even get to wrap it up.
00:38:29
Speaker
I would be stunned.
00:38:31
Speaker
No, I left it so you could say goodbye.
00:38:34
Speaker
Did you think about that earlier?
00:38:38
Speaker
That might've been- I'm glad I got some rhymes in though on our last one.
00:38:43
Speaker
That legit might've been your best one ever.
00:38:45
Speaker
That was really good.
00:38:52
Speaker
I also love that even no matter what you're singing about, no matter what the tune, you always do this little thing, this little mini dance move and it always works.
00:39:00
Speaker
You can't see it, but I just basically put my arms up in like a little 90 degree angles and I just rock my shoulders back and forth.
00:39:09
Speaker
And then right when you said, wait, what'd you say?
00:39:13
Speaker
What'd you rhyme with mint?
00:39:14
Speaker
Oh, I'll give you a hint.
00:39:17
Speaker
Right when you said hint, I said, this is going to be thin mint or something.
00:39:21
Speaker
But the fright and the out of sight, very.
00:39:24
Speaker
Well, caramel delight.
00:39:28
Speaker
Don't forget about Caramel Delights, baby.
00:39:30
Speaker
Was I even listening?
00:39:33
Speaker
Mac, that was an unbelievable ad to end the season.
00:39:38
Speaker
As I said, though, only $5 a box.
00:39:40
Speaker
We just bought some from our local Girl Scouts.
00:39:43
Speaker
They were sitting at the street corner, and we bought some from them.
00:39:46
Speaker
And we'll be back for sure.
00:39:48
Speaker
We told them we'll be back.
00:39:51
Speaker
I thought the Midas, one for $95, two for $3.15 was a good deal.
00:39:56
Speaker
$5 a box for $5 a box.
00:39:59
Speaker
And the girls, they're just, they're such great entrepreneurs and they're so cute.
00:40:03
Speaker
And how could you not want to buy from your local Girl Scout?
00:40:06
Speaker
I mean, help them out, get them to their numbers.
00:40:09
Speaker
And I mean, everybody wins the Girl Scouts, you, your bell bell.
00:40:16
Speaker
But with that, as much as I don't want this episode to end, and as happy as I am to say we kept it under 25, as promised, here as we have just got above 40, some things will never change.
00:40:29
Speaker
I'm very not sorry.
00:40:31
Speaker
I got to give a shout out to my co-host and best friend.
00:40:34
Speaker
It's always a complete honor to do this with you.
00:40:39
Speaker
I love getting to carve out 30 to two hours and 15 minutes to decide it, or depending on the week.
00:40:45
Speaker
Just to chill out with you, shoot the shiz and talk football.
00:40:48
Speaker
So I'm going to miss this.
00:40:50
Speaker
I love it and wouldn't want to do it with anyone else.
00:40:52
Speaker
So thank you so much for all your hard work.
00:40:54
Speaker
And thank you to our dedicated Wave Riders.
00:40:58
Speaker
Special shouts out to Ms.
00:41:00
Speaker
Paige Redner, Maddie and Vince.
00:41:03
Speaker
Steve and Steve and Patty and, you know, most importantly, our Norwegian fans who have been, been with us.
00:41:11
Speaker
If we're forgetting anybody, shoot us a DM and let us know you listen, but Matt, I'll let you close this out here.
00:41:16
Speaker
However you'd like.
00:41:18
Speaker
Well, I appreciate you saying all that.
00:41:19
Speaker
Couldn't agree more.
00:41:20
Speaker
I know maybe one to three people listen and two of them are usually us on a week to week basis.
00:41:27
Speaker
But getting this set time where we just get to shoot the shiz and joke around is is a favorite of mine.
00:41:34
Speaker
So appreciate you always taking the time, Bob.
00:41:37
Speaker
And yeah, appreciate everybody listening.
00:41:40
Speaker
I feel like we don't give Paige Redner enough shouts out.
00:41:43
Speaker
Every week she texts us telling us funny things that she heard in the episode or anything like that.
00:41:50
Speaker
I know Maddie and Vince listen a lot too, but specifically Paige is always texting us saying things that she loves.
00:41:57
Speaker
So thanks for sticking with us, Paige, and dealing with all of our antics.
00:42:00
Speaker
Per usual, wouldn't want to do it with anybody else.
00:42:04
Speaker
Love you, Bob, and love you, Wave Riders.
00:42:06
Speaker
We'll see you next season.
00:42:20
Speaker
See you next season, baby.
