Introduction to the Award Show Episode

00:00:01
Speaker
Is it the Grammys?
00:00:03
Speaker
Nope.
00:00:03
Speaker
Better.
00:00:04
Speaker
Award show, baby.
00:00:06
Speaker
Let's dive right in.

Tradition of Awards Episode Before Super Bowl

00:00:30
Speaker
It's award show time and this is Making Waves, a confidence pool podcast.
00:00:36
Speaker
I'm your host, Mac.
00:00:38
Speaker
And I'm your host, Bob.
00:00:41
Speaker
If you have not joined us in the past two seasons, you are in for a treat because every year, Bob and I do a special episode in between the last playoff round
00:00:56
Speaker
There's a break in terms of games before the Super Bowl.
00:01:00
Speaker
Both of the Super Bowl teams have a little bye while they do the Pro Bowl and all these different NFL honors ceremonies and all these things.

The Making Waves Awards Introduction

00:01:08
Speaker
But what's better than that?
00:01:09
Speaker
Making waves gives out awards.
00:01:12
Speaker
Bob and I come up with some awards that we'd like to give out to some players, some honorable mentions that we make.
00:01:19
Speaker
And yeah, I just like to say you're in for a treat.
00:01:21
Speaker
This is usually a pretty darn good episode if I do say so myself.
00:01:25
Speaker
I could not agree more.
00:01:26
Speaker
It's definitely short but sweet, which is probably exactly what the doctor ordered after all these long episodes.
00:01:32
Speaker
But yeah, this is just a really good time for me and Mac to come together, just kind of honor some of the best in the NFL, some of the surprises, of course, some honorable mentions, and just get us all prepared for the Super Bowl next weekend.
00:01:45
Speaker
So it's a fun one.
00:01:47
Speaker
Exactly.
00:01:48
Speaker
Yes.
00:01:48
Speaker
I really enjoy this episode personally.

Prestige of Podcast's Awards

00:01:52
Speaker
I love being able to shout some guys out that maybe don't always get recognition or maybe they got snubbed from the Pro Bowl themselves or their own awards throughout the season.
00:02:01
Speaker
So we get to give a little recognition to some guys and some of them, a lot of them are already getting awards anyway, but they're getting a Making Waves award on top of it.
00:02:10
Speaker
So it's even better.
00:02:11
Speaker
And it's literally the best award you can get.
00:02:12
Speaker
You're getting swag.
00:02:13
Speaker
You're getting recognition on a massive podcast.
00:02:15
Speaker
And I mean, I'm sure some of these guys would much rather have this than a Pro Bowl or an MVP.
00:02:20
Speaker
Totally agree.
00:02:21
Speaker
Some other honor.
00:02:22
Speaker
So yeah.
00:02:23
Speaker
That other stuff is just chump change compared to the Making Waves Awards.
00:02:27
Speaker
Oh my gosh.
00:02:27
Speaker
These are about as good as it gets.
00:02:29
Speaker
So this is a big episode.
00:02:31
Speaker
We are pumped.
00:02:31
Speaker
And I know the Wave Riders are as well.
00:02:34
Speaker
It is.
00:02:34
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:02:35
Speaker
I agree.
00:02:35
Speaker
It's a big episode.
00:02:36
Speaker
It's exciting stuff.
00:02:39
Speaker
And we've got a lot that we can, you know, talk about with all of these different guys.
00:02:43
Speaker
But without spoiling too much for the preview for the Super Bowl episode next week, we can give you a couple updates of some things that have occurred in the past week before we dive into all these awards.
00:02:55
Speaker
And before we switch to fun, let's maybe talk about some stuff that's not so fun.
00:03:00
Speaker
Insert somber music.
00:03:02
Speaker
Mac, take it away.
00:03:04
Speaker
I'm playing the world's tiniest violin between my two fingers.

Recap of AFC Championship: Ravens vs. Chiefs

00:03:08
Speaker
So if you'll remember from last week,
00:03:19
Speaker
Bob joined me here in North Carolina for the championship weekend.
00:03:23
Speaker
It was the AFC-NFC championship weekend.
00:03:26
Speaker
And it's big.
00:03:28
Speaker
It's a big weekend.
00:03:29
Speaker
Four teams left.
00:03:30
Speaker
Cuts it down to two.
00:03:32
Speaker
And it is very high stakes, one would say.
00:03:37
Speaker
So, start it off with the AFC.
00:03:39
Speaker
Why don't you just fill us in a little bit on what happened with the AFC.
00:03:42
Speaker
And I will fill everybody on the NFC.
00:03:46
Speaker
Yes.
00:03:47
Speaker
If anybody is a mind reader, I'm sure people have noticed from the somber tone, what is going on here, but yes, I will do a quick synopsis of the first game.
00:03:54
Speaker
I think most of us were expecting the Ravens who have been the best team in football all season to continue to
00:04:01
Speaker
to be just that.
00:04:02
Speaker
They had not been in a Super Bowl since they won it back in the college years of 2013.
00:04:06
Speaker
So it's been more than 10 years.
00:04:09
Speaker
Lamar Jackson has been scrutinized for not being able to win the big game.
00:04:13
Speaker
It seemed like this was a different team.
00:04:15
Speaker
They had the best defense all year.
00:04:16
Speaker
They had one of the best and most electric offenses, and it was in Edgar Allen Poe's ex-home of Baltimore.
00:04:23
Speaker
But as we found out time and time and time again, you just can never bet against
00:04:31
Speaker
Frickin' Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelsey.
00:04:34
Speaker
Patrick freaking Mahomes.
00:04:36
Speaker
You just can't bet against those guys and Andy Reid in the playoffs.
00:04:40
Speaker
And once again, all the naysayers are saying Travis and Patrick and those guys have never won on the road in the playoffs.
00:04:46
Speaker
And two weeks in a row, they won in Buffalo.
00:04:49
Speaker
And spoiler alert, they won in Buffalo.
00:04:52
Speaker
Baltimore, they want to close games.
00:04:55
Speaker
There's a couple, a couple of bad bounces by the Ravens are really tough fumble into the end zone at a crucial moment by Zay flowers at the end of the game.
00:05:03
Speaker
And yeah, a really clutch catch at the end, which is unlike chief receivers this season, but the, the chiefs and, and T Swift got it done.
00:05:12
Speaker
The chiefs are going back to the super bowl.
00:05:14
Speaker
What else is new groundhog day.
00:05:16
Speaker
And yeah, that was a shocker in game number one.

NFC Championship: Lions' Heartbreak and Turnaround

00:05:20
Speaker
Then we were all excited.
00:05:21
Speaker
We were making food.
00:05:22
Speaker
We were all hunkered in for game number two, cheering on the Lions, hoping they were going to make it to their first Super Bowl.
00:05:27
Speaker
And, Mac, take it away.
00:05:31
Speaker
We were, and it was exciting for the first half of that game.
00:05:35
Speaker
The Lions were in fuego.
00:05:38
Speaker
We were on fire.
00:05:39
Speaker
There may or may not have been some jinxing coming around from
00:05:42
Speaker
Not only my co-host, but honestly, I kind of believed it myself.
00:05:46
Speaker
I was getting texts from people saying this game is over.
00:05:49
Speaker
The Lions head into halftime up 17-0.
00:05:54
Speaker
Not up 17-0, up 17 points total.
00:05:58
Speaker
So huge, huge lead at halftime in an incredibly difficult game that a lot of people anticipated to be a neck and neck situation.
00:06:10
Speaker
We go into halftime feeling good.
00:06:12
Speaker
We come out a brand new team.
00:06:13
Speaker
They come out a brand new team.
00:06:15
Speaker
And everything that could have gone wrong in the second half went wrong.
00:06:21
Speaker
There was a deep shot downfield.
00:06:22
Speaker
It bounced off our guy's helmet.
00:06:24
Speaker
Brandon Ayuk made a catch.
00:06:27
Speaker
It was absurd.
00:06:28
Speaker
It turned the tide.
00:06:29
Speaker
The momentum completely shifted into San Fran's favor.
00:06:32
Speaker
And they accomplished, I've got to give them credit.
00:06:35
Speaker
They accomplished the biggest comeback in NFC championship history by overcoming a 17 point deficit and winning the game.
00:06:44
Speaker
So really unfortunate heartbreak.
00:06:48
Speaker
If I'm honest, I would have rather have lost, I think in like heart or I don't know if there's a worse way to lose in like heartbreaking fashion.
00:06:58
Speaker
I would have rather have lost of just like gotten blown out, I think by San Francisco.
00:07:02
Speaker
To have the lead 17 by 17 points at halftime and then to blow it, it was rough.
00:07:09
Speaker
It was rough.
00:07:09
Speaker
And I hope

Optimism for Lions' Future

00:07:11
Speaker
it's something we can learn from.
00:07:12
Speaker
And I hope we get another chance at the big stage.
00:07:15
Speaker
But I was really trying my best to be supportive at the end.
00:07:20
Speaker
Obviously, Nick was there for you.
00:07:22
Speaker
And I was just kind of sitting there.
00:07:23
Speaker
And I'm not speechless many times in this life, but...
00:07:27
Speaker
vibes were not immaculate obviously mac was really bummed vibes were great vibes were amazing the first two quarters we were jumping around um we thought there was maybe gonna be a snow day for nick we thought the lines were going to the super bowl things were just looking up and up and then uh the snow didn't turn into snow another storm came and it was the niners in the second half and just everything like max said it could have gone wrong went wrong and that's what it took to beat the lion so i was trying to be
00:07:53
Speaker
optimistic for Mac after the game and let her know that it was just such a good accomplishment to get there.
00:07:58
Speaker
But she probably didn't want to hear any of it at that point and just wanted me out of her face.
00:08:01
Speaker
So what a year for the Lions though, making the NFC championship game.
00:08:05
Speaker
You retained Ben Johnson, which is huge.
00:08:08
Speaker
We did.
00:08:10
Speaker
That is a huge, huge keep for the Lions.
00:08:13
Speaker
And you're really bringing everybody back as far as I know, if I'm not mistaken.
00:08:17
Speaker
Yeah, it's true.
00:08:18
Speaker
So, I mean, as far as things go in terms of us,

Lions' Offseason Focus

00:08:23
Speaker
huge, huge move.
00:08:25
Speaker
Ben Johnson has decided he will not be taking a head coaching job.
00:08:28
Speaker
He's going to stick with the Lions.
00:08:30
Speaker
He believes that he is not done yet there.
00:08:33
Speaker
There's more to be done.
00:08:34
Speaker
There's a story to be written, and he wants to be a part of it.
00:08:38
Speaker
So he is sticking around, which is exciting for us.
00:08:42
Speaker
And then beyond that, yeah, we've got a couple of the offseason guys we signed, like C.J.
00:08:48
Speaker
Gardner-Johnson and some of those guys, Cam Stulton.
00:08:51
Speaker
There's a potential that we lose them in free agency.
00:08:53
Speaker
Not entirely sure.
00:08:54
Speaker
But our core, especially our core rookies, I mean, they're all under still rookie contract.
00:08:59
Speaker
I think we've got still a decent core unit.
00:09:03
Speaker
Obviously, Mon Ross, a proud sticking around.
00:09:05
Speaker
I think Jared Goff sticking around.
00:09:07
Speaker
Um, so, so we've got most of the guys coming back.
00:09:12
Speaker
And I foresee us picking your boys many weeks next, next year.
00:09:15
Speaker
And it's been fun.
00:09:20
Speaker
Fun being a supportive best pal.
00:09:21
Speaker
And it's been, been fun cheering for your squad and being on that, that's a lions lions train with you, but you know, it's,
00:09:30
Speaker
It's not the worst thing in the world that me and you are back to our separate teams.
00:09:34
Speaker
And it just feels, feels right.
00:09:35
Speaker
Obviously I would have supported you in the super bowl, but we're going to be right back to be in the, uh,
00:09:40
Speaker
interdivisional rivals next year.
00:09:41
Speaker
So WaveRiders don't get comfortable with me cheering for Mac and cheering for the Lions.
00:09:46
Speaker
Obviously, I want her to be happy and I want her team to do well, but I want my team to win the division and I want my boys to be in the NFC Championship game in 2025.
00:09:55
Speaker
And I think they will be.
00:09:56
Speaker
So it's been fun.
00:09:57
Speaker
What a run.
00:09:58
Speaker
And we got a lot to look forward to next season.
00:10:02
Speaker
We do indeed.
00:10:03
Speaker
Yes.
00:10:03
Speaker
So it's, it's exciting.
00:10:05
Speaker
Obviously it was a tough loss end of the season, but I think we are here to stay.
00:10:10
Speaker
I don't think it's flash in the pan, hopefully for the lions.
00:10:13
Speaker
So I'm hoping we just spark some more interest, bring in some more key pieces and just keep building.
00:10:21
Speaker
Just keep building and maybe not build too, too much.
00:10:24
Speaker
Cause there's a team that I want to build a little bit more, but hey, nah.
00:10:28
Speaker
Yeah, you've had your playoff fun.
00:10:29
Speaker
Now it's my turn.
00:10:31
Speaker
We've never been to a Super Bowl, Mr. Super Bowl, over there.
00:10:34
Speaker
Now it's my turn.
00:10:36
Speaker
No, it's not.
00:10:36
Speaker
Not yet.
00:10:37
Speaker
Not yet.
00:10:39
Speaker
My turn.
00:10:39
Speaker
Not yet.
00:10:41
Speaker
We might be checking out the draft.
00:10:43
Speaker
The draft's going to be a big, big, big night and weekend.
00:10:47
Speaker
So we were talking about maybe trying to make it to D2 for that.
00:10:49
Speaker
So...
00:10:51
Speaker
Yeah, might be in Detroit.
00:10:52
Speaker
We'll see.
00:10:53
Speaker
We might be there when we find out that the Chicago Bears have traded away Justin Fields.
00:11:00
Speaker
Okay, now all bets are off.
00:11:02
Speaker
No more white flag.
00:11:03
Speaker
Now it's right back to rivals on this podcast, baby.
00:11:07
Speaker
Shots fired.
00:11:09
Speaker
Shots fired.
00:11:10
Speaker
I drew first blood, so we're back to classic Mac and Bob.
00:11:15
Speaker
Classic Mac and Bob.
00:11:17
Speaker
Classic Mac and Bob.
00:11:18
Speaker
And speaking of the Bears and Lions, I'm really excited to see if either of our boys have any recipients of awards tonight.
00:11:24
Speaker
Should we dive in and find out?
00:11:26
Speaker
I think we should dive in.
00:11:28
Speaker
Let's jump into the first award.
00:11:31
Speaker
I know you are going to be giving this one away, Bob, but why don't you tell us what this first award is going to be and who's going to receive this incredible first nomination here?

Rookie of the Year: CJ Stroud

00:11:43
Speaker
Okay, so the first award that we are doing here is a really special one.
00:11:50
Speaker
And obviously, I have the list of awards that we're doing.
00:11:53
Speaker
So I know which one we are doing.
00:11:54
Speaker
I'm trying to get Matt's attention here.
00:11:56
Speaker
She is not looking at me.
00:11:58
Speaker
But yeah, the first one obviously is rookie, correct?
00:12:00
Speaker
We talked about that.
00:12:01
Speaker
Correct.
00:12:02
Speaker
Yes.
00:12:02
Speaker
Sorry, I didn't realize you were waving.
00:12:03
Speaker
Yes.
00:12:04
Speaker
No, you're good.
00:12:05
Speaker
Right before the podcast, you said, can the first one be rookie of the year?
00:12:08
Speaker
So I'm sticking with that.
00:12:09
Speaker
Perfect.
00:12:09
Speaker
I think I got a little bit of a head cold, so my brain's all over the place.
00:12:12
Speaker
Oh, no.
00:12:13
Speaker
I know classic me.
00:12:14
Speaker
I'm going to be down and out for about three weeks now, but yes, rookie of the year.
00:12:17
Speaker
There's a lot of good ones to choose from.
00:12:20
Speaker
So I'm excited for Mac to talk about some of our honorable mentions, but honestly me and Mac both agreed.
00:12:27
Speaker
It was a unanimous vote for making waves.
00:12:29
Speaker
And we actually did a poll with all the NFL current players.
00:12:32
Speaker
And it was also, it was not quite unanimous, but we put out a poll to all of our favorite NFL stars.
00:12:37
Speaker
And this guy won the award.
00:12:39
Speaker
He's from the Ohio state university.
00:12:42
Speaker
He was drafted number two in the draft, which some may say is a steal now because, oh boy, he should have been number one.
00:12:49
Speaker
That's for dang sure.
00:12:50
Speaker
But he was just hemming and hawing all year.
00:12:53
Speaker
He took a team that went from the bottom of the AFC South.
00:12:57
Speaker
They were a last place squad.
00:12:59
Speaker
And he came in and it was just immediate

Honorable Mentions for Lions' Rookies

00:13:02
Speaker
up and up.
00:13:03
Speaker
Pulling up his stats right now.
00:13:04
Speaker
So I'm sure a lot of you have been able to figure out that the winner of our award is C.J.
00:13:11
Speaker
Strout.
00:13:13
Speaker
6'3", 218 pounds, size 10 hands, whatever that means.
00:13:16
Speaker
And he, yeah, had an incredible, incredible year.
00:13:19
Speaker
He ended the season with 4,108 yards, which is astounding for a rookie.
00:13:25
Speaker
He threw 23 touchdown passes to just five interceptions, an unbelievable touchdown to interception ratio.
00:13:33
Speaker
He ended the year with a 100.8 QBR, which is magnificent for an entire season.
00:13:40
Speaker
And not only that,
00:13:41
Speaker
He led his team to an AFC South division title and they won a playoff game beating the Browns in round one, a very, very, very deserving first recipient swag coming your way, CJ and Mac take it away with the, uh, a little montage here.
00:14:00
Speaker
All right, here we go.
00:14:01
Speaker
Here are some of CJ Stroud's highlights.
00:14:13
Speaker
It looks like you lost another one.
00:14:53
Speaker
Wow.
00:14:53
Speaker
Very chill vibes.
00:14:55
Speaker
I like that.
00:14:55
Speaker
Chill vibes.
00:14:56
Speaker
Yeah, that was like low, what is it?
00:14:58
Speaker
Lo-fi beats or whatever?
00:15:00
Speaker
That was exactly like lo-fi beats.
00:15:02
Speaker
Just kind of chilling in the club.
00:15:04
Speaker
Just chilling.
00:15:05
Speaker
Just absolutely chilling.
00:15:07
Speaker
Just vibing.
00:15:08
Speaker
Just like CJ Straub.
00:15:09
Speaker
He's just back there.
00:15:09
Speaker
He's vibing.
00:15:10
Speaker
He's chilling.
00:15:11
Speaker
He's calm, cool, and collected.
00:15:13
Speaker
And he's getting the job done.
00:15:14
Speaker
Incredible.
00:15:15
Speaker
Incredible job by CJ.
00:15:16
Speaker
Incredible job by my co-host Bob in predicting that he would be
00:15:20
Speaker
a fire for that team and did a phenomenal job.
00:15:23
Speaker
Truly.
00:15:24
Speaker
I appreciate that.
00:15:25
Speaker
And speaking of rookies, I think we have at least one honorable mention.
00:15:28
Speaker
We'd love to hear who just missed out on the huge prize and all the swag.
00:15:33
Speaker
We do.
00:15:33
Speaker
We do.
00:15:34
Speaker
It was hard.
00:15:34
Speaker
I have maybe more than one.
00:15:37
Speaker
But definitely got to give a shout.
00:15:40
Speaker
I know.
00:15:40
Speaker
Very interesting.
00:15:41
Speaker
Definitely got to give a shout out to my boys in Detroit.
00:15:44
Speaker
Jameer Gibbs, phenomenal season.
00:15:47
Speaker
I honestly considered putting him and...
00:15:52
Speaker
David Montgomery up for the dynamic duo.
00:15:54
Speaker
They're the first rushing duo in NFL history to both get over 1,000 rushing yards.
00:15:58
Speaker
So in my opinion, pretty incredible.
00:16:01
Speaker
Yeah, nom, nom, nom.
00:16:02
Speaker
Hope you're hungry.
00:16:03
Speaker
I know I am because I've been editing these freaking video clips and I haven't eaten dinner.
00:16:08
Speaker
Oh, no, she actually is hungry.
00:16:10
Speaker
Oh, no, no, no, no.
00:16:12
Speaker
So I consider that.
00:16:13
Speaker
But another honorable mention that I got to throw in here would just be Sam Laporta, Sammy football, Sammy ball game.
00:16:22
Speaker
That's what they call him, I guess.
00:16:23
Speaker
I don't know.
00:16:23
Speaker
I've seen that like once or twice.
00:16:24
Speaker
I was going to say, did you just make toes up on the spot?
00:16:27
Speaker
What the heck?
00:16:29
Speaker
The Detroit Lions tight end.
00:16:31
Speaker
Incredible, incredible season.
00:16:33
Speaker
Record breaking again.
00:16:35
Speaker
The Lions had a lot of record breaking rookies this year.
00:16:38
Speaker
And after 12 games, I saw this nugget and I've been hanging on to it since I knew we were going to do this award show since week 12.
00:16:50
Speaker
And Sam Laporta is the first tight end in NFL history to produce at least 60 receptions, 600 receiving yards, and six receiving TDs through the first 12 games of a player's career.
00:17:05
Speaker
Incredible season.
00:17:06
Speaker
He only went on from there to like do a bunch more.
00:17:09
Speaker
I think he tied the overall record for receptions and yards for tight end.
00:17:15
Speaker
Just incredible job.
00:17:16
Speaker
Incredible.
00:17:18
Speaker
Dang.
00:17:19
Speaker
That was, that was a pretty juicy nugget.
00:17:20
Speaker
I'm, I'm hungry too, but that was nice.
00:17:22
Speaker
Also shocking that you, that you shout, shout sit out two lions for honorable mention.

Puka Nakua's Record-Breaking Rookie Season

00:17:29
Speaker
That was not that surprising.
00:17:31
Speaker
Oh, and I also, let's see, I actually saved another one here too.
00:17:35
Speaker
He's the only player.
00:17:36
Speaker
Oh, wait.
00:17:38
Speaker
He is tied.
00:17:40
Speaker
No, never mind.
00:17:42
Speaker
Sorry, folks.
00:17:43
Speaker
I swear this is a professional podcast.
00:17:45
Speaker
Oh, okay.
00:17:45
Speaker
Okay.
00:17:45
Speaker
I see.
00:17:46
Speaker
I see.
00:17:46
Speaker
So he's the only tight end to do that.
00:17:48
Speaker
And he's tied in that category with Justin Jefferson, Michael Thomas, Odell Buckham Jr., Anquan Bolden, and Marquez Colston.
00:17:57
Speaker
So...
00:17:59
Speaker
Yeah.
00:17:59
Speaker
Some big names, some big names.
00:18:01
Speaker
So he's the only tight end to ever do it and tied with some pretty big wide receiver names.
00:18:04
Speaker
Good for you, Sammy.
00:18:06
Speaker
Good job, Sammy, Sammy ball game, Sammy football.
00:18:09
Speaker
Those are a ball game.
00:18:11
Speaker
Good for you, man.
00:18:12
Speaker
Those are cool nicknames and cool nugs.
00:18:14
Speaker
Um, I got to give one more honorable mention because this guy easily, easily could have won the award.
00:18:21
Speaker
And I'm shocked my co-host didn't bring him up.
00:18:23
Speaker
So I got to give him a shout out.
00:18:24
Speaker
He's got one of the coolest names in football.
00:18:26
Speaker
He had one of the best.
00:18:28
Speaker
He actually did have the best rookie wide receiver season of all time.
00:18:32
Speaker
Oh, incredible.
00:18:33
Speaker
Yeah.
00:18:34
Speaker
Puka Nakua.
00:18:35
Speaker
He almost broke Lions fans hearts about three weeks ago in Ford Field.
00:18:39
Speaker
Thankfully, the Lions did end up winning that game.
00:18:41
Speaker
But Puka, what a season.
00:18:43
Speaker
What a season.
00:18:44
Speaker
He set the record for receptions and yards as a rookie wide receiver.
00:18:48
Speaker
He came out of literally nowhere, kind of took over for Cooper Cup.
00:18:50
Speaker
So Puka, I know we're not sending honorable mention swag.
00:18:54
Speaker
So sorry, Sammy.
00:18:55
Speaker
Sorry.
00:18:57
Speaker
Sorry, Jameer, but I did send some swag to Puka.
00:19:00
Speaker
So Puka, that little bag of goodies, got your name on it coming your way.
00:19:04
Speaker
And all rookies tonight that have been discussed, what a season.
00:19:09
Speaker
And we're excited to see what you do moving forward.
00:19:11
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:19:12
Speaker
Love it.
00:19:13
Speaker
Love to hear it.
00:19:15
Speaker
Love it.
00:19:16
Speaker
All right.
00:19:16
Speaker
Well, without further ado, thanks, rookies.
00:19:18
Speaker
We'll be having some good further rookies tonight.
00:19:21
Speaker
Coming down the line, I'm sure, at this NFL draft.
00:19:23
Speaker
But let's move on to someone who is not a rookie, but someone who certainly still surprised us throughout this year.
00:19:32
Speaker
So we have somebody that, or we do this award every year.
00:19:38
Speaker
It's called the Dark Horse Award.
00:19:40
Speaker
And this is an award where somebody just kind of comes out of left field.
00:19:45
Speaker
We're expecting some of these teams to be incredible as they enter.
00:19:49
Speaker
You know, the Chiefs, always a great team.
00:19:51
Speaker
The Ravens, great team.
00:19:52
Speaker
They've got Lamar Jackson, going to be good.
00:19:55
Speaker
All these teams that they have a lot of hype preseason and things are looking good for them.
00:20:01
Speaker
There's somebody, though, and there's one team that I think the hype was very much so not their preseason.
00:20:08
Speaker
They had lost their quarterback, MVP quarterback, record-holding,
00:20:15
Speaker
quarterback Tom Brady, and they were just looking for an answer.
00:20:20
Speaker
They were just looking for somebody to plug in the backfield under center to just get the job

Baker Mayfield's Unexpected Strong Season

00:20:25
Speaker
done.
00:20:25
Speaker
Nobody's going to do it like Tom Brady, but you know what?
00:20:27
Speaker
We're just going to put anybody we can back there.
00:20:31
Speaker
And so they brought in a guy that was looking for his fourth team in three years.
00:20:39
Speaker
He was looking for his fourth team somewhere he could settle since 2021 and
00:20:43
Speaker
He left the Browns.
00:20:44
Speaker
He went on to play for the Carolina Panthers, and it was just a dismal performance.
00:20:49
Speaker
He went on then to assist the L.A.
00:20:51
Speaker
Rams and back up an injured Matthew Stafford in play and lose in regular season, unfortunately due to his interceptions.
00:21:00
Speaker
So we're all thinking, this guy's not the answer, but he's just a plug-and-play in Tampa Bay.
00:21:05
Speaker
Hold the phone, says Baker Mayfield.
00:21:10
Speaker
Oh!
00:21:10
Speaker
Wow!
00:21:11
Speaker
They plug him into Tampa Bay, and he actually had quite the season.
00:21:17
Speaker
He played all 17 games.
00:21:19
Speaker
A couple of his stats here, he had a completion percentage of 64.3.
00:21:22
Speaker
He threw for over 4,000 yards, 28 touchdowns.
00:21:29
Speaker
Incredible job by Baker Mayfield.
00:21:32
Speaker
And he brought him all the way to the second round of the playoffs, the divisional round.
00:21:37
Speaker
where then, unfortunately, they did lose to my Detroit Lions.
00:21:42
Speaker
But still, I don't think anybody anticipated the Bucs would be back in the playoffs.
00:21:46
Speaker
I don't think anybody anticipated the Bucs with Baker Mayfield would be anywhere sniffing the playoffs.
00:21:52
Speaker
And here they are.
00:21:53
Speaker
They made it to the divisional round.
00:21:55
Speaker
And I think Baker's found a bit of a home in Tampa Bay.
00:21:58
Speaker
So we're going to show you a quick little highlight reel of Baker Mayfield.
00:22:02
Speaker
Can't wait.
00:22:03
Speaker
I believe in Baker Mayfield.
00:22:05
Speaker
Love this move for the Bucs.
00:22:07
Speaker
Everything happens for a reason.
00:22:08
Speaker
So I'm here now and I'm ready to go.
00:22:18
Speaker
He's the number one difference maker in the NFL.
00:22:20
Speaker
I think it seems like he's going to be like a very fiery competitor.
00:22:36
Speaker
What's he gonna do with this opportunity?
00:22:38
Speaker
I can't wait to see.
00:22:40
Speaker
I'll always have a chip on my shoulder.
00:22:41
Speaker
That's how I approach every day.
00:22:43
Speaker
Right now I want to compete and I want to win.
00:22:45
Speaker
Baker freaking Mayfield.
00:22:50
Speaker
Yes.
00:22:53
Speaker
That sounded like a movie promo.
00:22:55
Speaker
Baker frickin' Mayfield.
00:22:58
Speaker
That was like a little teaser.
00:23:00
Speaker
Like, I want to see that movie.
00:23:01
Speaker
That trailer was electric.
00:23:03
Speaker
It was.
00:23:03
Speaker
It was a bit of trailer.
00:23:05
Speaker
If I'm honest, the video that I found, it was like a welcome to Tampa Baker Mayfield.
00:23:09
Speaker
So this was still pretty early on in the season.
00:23:11
Speaker
Not a lot of highlights there, but that's okay.
00:23:15
Speaker
It was still pretty hype.
00:23:16
Speaker
I'd say that was pretty hype.
00:23:17
Speaker
I got some chills.
00:23:18
Speaker
I got some mountains on my skin and Baker freaking Mayfield.
00:23:21
Speaker
Shouts out to you.
00:23:22
Speaker
What a season.
00:23:23
Speaker
And yeah, as Mac said, Dark Horse is a great award.
00:23:27
Speaker
Everyone loves a good Dark Horse coming out of nowhere.
00:23:29
Speaker
Kind of like me with the winning the head to head this year.
00:23:32
Speaker
Just you don't expect it, but you'll love to see it.
00:23:34
Speaker
So congrats to Baker.
00:23:37
Speaker
Congrats to Baker.
00:23:37
Speaker
Swag coming your way.
00:23:38
Speaker
And then Mac, I believe there's an honorable mention.
00:23:40
Speaker
I didn't really want to talk about this guy.
00:23:42
Speaker
So I'll leave this one to you.
00:23:43
Speaker
There is.
00:23:43
Speaker
I was leaving it for you, but it sounds like you don't want it.
00:23:47
Speaker
So yeah, honorable mention here.
00:23:49
Speaker
We do have to give a shout out to Jordan Love.

Jordan Love Exceeds Expectations

00:23:53
Speaker
That is one...
00:23:56
Speaker
But that is one that, again, similar story.
00:24:00
Speaker
The quarterback, this franchise quarterback that everybody loved, and I know Tom Brady's not necessarily like franchise for the Bucs, but the past few years.
00:24:08
Speaker
But especially in Green Bay, this franchise quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, who has done so much for them, has been the face of their team for so long, leaves.
00:24:18
Speaker
Jordan Love comes in.
00:24:20
Speaker
People aren't expecting much from him.
00:24:21
Speaker
We saw a little bit from him last year.
00:24:24
Speaker
Things didn't look like they were going to be good.
00:24:25
Speaker
We were excited in the NFC North to have a reign without the Packers included.
00:24:32
Speaker
Unfortunately, Jordan Love put that to rest quite quickly because he really did have a good season.
00:24:39
Speaker
Again,
00:24:40
Speaker
Getting to the divisional round, just barely lost in that divisional round.
00:24:44
Speaker
I really wish they did now.
00:24:46
Speaker
No kidding.
00:24:47
Speaker
And yeah, great job by Jordan Love.
00:24:50
Speaker
And I think we've got a little bit to worry about in the NFC North, unfortunately.
00:24:55
Speaker
I think we both have a lot to worry about.
00:24:58
Speaker
That was really big, UMAC.
00:25:00
Speaker
We've grown with that.
00:25:01
Speaker
We're shoutsing out Packers.
00:25:02
Speaker
But this is a show that we love to give the honest opinions.
00:25:06
Speaker
And he got a lot of votes for Dark Horse of the Year.
00:25:08
Speaker
So shouts out.
00:25:09
Speaker
You had a good year.
00:25:10
Speaker
Don't get too comfy.
00:25:11
Speaker
You're not going to have a great year next year.
00:25:13
Speaker
And Packers are still bitches.
00:25:16
Speaker
They are bitches.
00:25:18
Speaker
Explicit.
00:25:18
Speaker
Explicit.
00:25:20
Speaker
Oh, explicit.
00:25:20
Speaker
Sorry.
00:25:21
Speaker
X-rated.
00:25:22
Speaker
But yeah.
00:25:22
Speaker
X-rated.
00:25:23
Speaker
Baker, congrats once again.
00:25:24
Speaker
And let's move right on.
00:25:25
Speaker
Yes.
00:25:26
Speaker
Congrats, Baker.
00:25:27
Speaker
Moving on to the next award.
00:25:29
Speaker
This is one of my favorite awards.

Dynamic Duo: Dak Prescott and C.D. Lamb

00:25:31
Speaker
The Dynamic Duo Award.
00:25:34
Speaker
What you got, Bob?
00:25:36
Speaker
Dynamic Duo Award.
00:25:38
Speaker
This was tough.
00:25:39
Speaker
And it was between two duos.
00:25:41
Speaker
And Mac obviously said apparently it was between three.
00:25:43
Speaker
Between three duos.
00:25:46
Speaker
and actually, little did I know there was a couple of lions that were on the radar as well.
00:25:51
Speaker
And little does Mac know that, uh, Justin Fields and DJ Moore actually were super high up on the list.
00:25:56
Speaker
They got a lot of votes.
00:25:58
Speaker
They got a lot of votes, but Mac had to do a lot of editing and work today.
00:26:01
Speaker
So I don't think a joke like that would have gone over too, too smoothly today, but yes, DJ Moore and Justin shouts out that, uh,
00:26:10
Speaker
That is definitely a duo that's pretty dynamic.
00:26:12
Speaker
But yes, all that to say, the duo that ended up taking the cake, and like I said, it was a very tight race, but this is a very good regular season duo.
00:26:24
Speaker
We'll put that right out there.
00:26:25
Speaker
They had a record-breaking season, and both of these players in the duo had the best statistical season of their career,
00:26:34
Speaker
I'm just going to go ahead and tell you right now, it's Dak Prescott, my fantasy quarterback, and C.D.
00:26:39
Speaker
Lamb, who has quickly become one of the top three fantasy wide receivers in the game.
00:26:45
Speaker
And yeah, I'll quick go through the stats.
00:26:48
Speaker
This year, C.D.
00:26:49
Speaker
Lamb had 135 receptions, which is absurd.
00:26:54
Speaker
Almost 1,800 yards, 12 touchdowns between the two of them, Dak and C.D.,
00:27:00
Speaker
And their long was a 96-yard touchdown.
00:27:03
Speaker
So between them, they compiled a lot of Ws.
00:27:07
Speaker
They compiled a NFC East championship.
00:27:10
Speaker
And unfortunately, they couldn't compile a playoff win together.
00:27:13
Speaker
But Dak, Seedy, what an incredible season.
00:27:17
Speaker
So many electric plays, tons of touchdowns.
00:27:19
Speaker
And yeah, let's take a quick listen into some of their highlights of the season.
00:27:24
Speaker
All right.
00:27:25
Speaker
And I appreciate you said listen.
00:27:26
Speaker
I realized I said, let's take a look at Baker's highlights.
00:27:29
Speaker
We're not taking a look.
00:27:30
Speaker
We're taking a listen.
00:27:31
Speaker
Let's listen in.
00:27:31
Speaker
Hey, you know what?
00:27:32
Speaker
Let's take a listen.
00:27:34
Speaker
Or a look.
00:27:35
Speaker
Let's take a listen.
00:27:38
Speaker
Over the middle.
00:27:39
Speaker
Fire.
00:27:39
Speaker
Caught.
00:27:39
Speaker
CD Lamb.
00:27:40
Speaker
Touchdown, Dallas.
00:27:42
Speaker
And considering, here's Prescott back to the throw.
00:27:44
Speaker
Quick hitter over the middle.
00:27:46
Speaker
Lamb.
00:27:54
Speaker
Prescott escapes.
00:27:55
Speaker
Rolling, lifting, throwing.
00:27:56
Speaker
Caught for the touchdown.
00:27:59
Speaker
Guess who?
00:28:01
Speaker
CD Lamb.
00:28:06
Speaker
Here we go.
00:28:08
Speaker
Who do I sound like?
00:28:10
Speaker
Here we go.
00:28:12
Speaker
That sounds a lot like Mr. Dak Prescott.
00:28:14
Speaker
Here we go.
00:28:15
Speaker
Every time his cadence under center is, okay, here we go.
00:28:21
Speaker
And then he likes it.
00:28:23
Speaker
I bet his offensive line got so sick of that after one game.
00:28:26
Speaker
Okay, here we go.
00:28:29
Speaker
So classic.
00:28:30
Speaker
So just heartwarming.
00:28:31
Speaker
You can hear it once.
00:28:33
Speaker
You can hear it once in that little clip.
00:28:34
Speaker
Here we go.
00:28:35
Speaker
Oh, I missed it.
00:28:36
Speaker
I was too busy just dancing around, vibing to that.
00:28:39
Speaker
Once again, very chill.
00:28:40
Speaker
Some more lo-fi beats right there.
00:28:41
Speaker
It's just kind of, you know, some strings.
00:28:43
Speaker
There were some strings in there.
00:28:45
Speaker
Just kind of vibing.
00:28:46
Speaker
So very good music.
00:28:47
Speaker
That was one of the ones that Mac put together.
00:28:49
Speaker
So great choice of the music.
00:28:51
Speaker
I loved it.
00:28:51
Speaker
10 out of 10.
00:28:52
Speaker
Hey, thanks.
00:28:53
Speaker
Yeah.
00:28:54
Speaker
Put together in a pretty quick fashion.
00:28:55
Speaker
So not my best work, but we'll take it.
00:28:57
Speaker
I thought that was great.
00:28:59
Speaker
Hey, gets the people moving, moving and grooving, gets the feet kind of bumping a little bit.
00:29:03
Speaker
So I'd say that's, that's a

Tua Tagovailoa and Tyreek Hill's Strong Partnership

00:29:05
Speaker
win.
00:29:05
Speaker
That's all we need.
00:29:06
Speaker
All right.
00:29:07
Speaker
Well, congrats.
00:29:08
Speaker
I'm sorry.
00:29:08
Speaker
Congrats to, uh, to Dak and CD.
00:29:11
Speaker
Congrats to Dak and CD.
00:29:12
Speaker
I'm so sorry to interrupt.
00:29:13
Speaker
I know I never do that on this podcast.
00:29:15
Speaker
It was so much easier when we were in the same room.
00:29:17
Speaker
I know.
00:29:19
Speaker
What I was going to ask is, I know there was a duo that was very close, and I believe they won it last year, so that's why we kind of opted for the eventual winners.
00:29:27
Speaker
You want to tell the peeps about who barely missed out on this prestigious award?
00:29:32
Speaker
Oh, sure thing.
00:29:33
Speaker
Yes.
00:29:33
Speaker
So Bob texted me earlier about, you know, just the different thoughts that he had on who should win these awards.
00:29:40
Speaker
And one that was very, very close was Tua, talking about Loa, and Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins.
00:29:48
Speaker
Shouts out Noah.
00:29:49
Speaker
Because, again, they had an incredible season, the two of them together, just elite.
00:29:56
Speaker
It seems like Hill is always available for Tua.
00:29:59
Speaker
He's an option downfield.
00:30:01
Speaker
He's so fast.
00:30:02
Speaker
It's crazy.
00:30:03
Speaker
I feel like nobody can guard him except for when they lose, which happened a couple times.
00:30:09
Speaker
But besides the point, Tua, Tyreek, great connection there.
00:30:14
Speaker
And I don't think they're going anywhere.
00:30:15
Speaker
So I think that's a connection that we get to watch.
00:30:18
Speaker
And it's a fun one.
00:30:19
Speaker
for quite some time.
00:30:21
Speaker
I have a sneaky suspicion that they're going to be up for this award and an honorable mention, if not winner, many years.
00:30:27
Speaker
And did you say just the Tua of us?
00:30:31
Speaker
Just the Tua of us.
00:30:34
Speaker
Some would say that Cheetah is freaky fast.
00:30:37
Speaker
They call them Jimmy Johns out there.
00:30:38
Speaker
Okay, let's move on.
00:30:40
Speaker
One more quick honorable mention, obviously, Dynamic Duo.
00:30:44
Speaker
Bob, you and I, we just crushed this podcast time and time again.
00:30:49
Speaker
I know I surprised you with a little highlight reel last year of yourself.
00:30:53
Speaker
Unfortunately, I didn't have time to do it this year, but just a little honorable mention.
00:30:57
Speaker
I think we do a great job.
00:30:59
Speaker
I think we're more than an honorable mention.
00:31:01
Speaker
I think if there was a podcaster dynamic duo, it would be us year after year after year.
00:31:07
Speaker
So yeah, I thought that kind of went without saying, but I'm glad that you said it.
00:31:10
Speaker
And we are quite the dynamic duo, McKen.
00:31:12
Speaker
So we, we really got it going on.
00:31:16
Speaker
Love it.
00:31:17
Speaker
Love this podcast.
00:31:18
Speaker
And with that.
00:31:20
Speaker
Let's head on to award number four.
00:31:22
Speaker
All right.
00:31:22
Speaker
Next award we have, this is a fun one.

Joe Flacco's Comeback to NFL

00:31:26
Speaker
This is the comeback player of the year.
00:31:31
Speaker
And kind of thinking through, this would be an award that would go to somebody who, you know, maybe...
00:31:38
Speaker
Maybe they were quiet the past year.
00:31:40
Speaker
Maybe they were quiet the past couple years.
00:31:43
Speaker
Maybe we haven't seen much of them.
00:31:45
Speaker
And, you know, we just thought, eh, their career, is it going downhill?
00:31:50
Speaker
Or is there still a chance for revival again?
00:31:53
Speaker
If you had told me this gentleman's name ahead of the season that he would be playing in a playoff game, that he would close out a season for a team, let alone the team he ended on, and if you just mentioned his name in general, I think I would tell you that I thought he was retired.
00:32:13
Speaker
Turns out he wasn't.
00:32:14
Speaker
That would have been my guess, though, if you had asked me, because I honestly was not too sure.
00:32:20
Speaker
But there was a certain somebody who...
00:32:23
Speaker
ended the 2022-2023 season as a backup for the New York Jets.
00:32:30
Speaker
He played a couple games, and things were going okay, I guess, for the Jets.
00:32:35
Speaker
He helped out when Zach Wilson was struggling.
00:32:38
Speaker
He helped out when Mike White was struggling.
00:32:40
Speaker
He just kind of had a backup for a little bit.
00:32:43
Speaker
He hasn't really been in his prime since 2017.
00:32:47
Speaker
Since then, he really has just been a plug-and-play.
00:32:50
Speaker
They use him when they need him.
00:32:52
Speaker
They're using his experience and they're just getting a game manager under center.
00:32:57
Speaker
Since that 2022-2023 last game ended, he has been, as many people have been liking to point out, sitting on his couch just waiting around.
00:33:06
Speaker
He hasn't been signed with any particular team.
00:33:09
Speaker
He didn't necessarily retire, but he just kind of was hanging out.
00:33:13
Speaker
He was a free agent, hoping somebody would give him a chance.
00:33:17
Speaker
And here comes the darling Cleveland Browns with a smile on their face saying, hey,
00:33:24
Speaker
We want to give you a chance because our quarterback, who we do not name on this podcast, ended up getting hurt.
00:33:30
Speaker
We need somebody, and you are the man, Joe Vincent Falacco.
00:33:37
Speaker
Coming out of left field, joining the Cleveland Browns in week 11 of the 2023 NFL regular season, did an incredible job throughout the last couple games of the season,
00:33:53
Speaker
Like we said, ended up joining the team on a little playoff or during a playoff game, trying to make a playoff run.
00:34:01
Speaker
Didn't work out for them, didn't pan out.
00:34:03
Speaker
They ended up losing to the Texans in week one.
00:34:07
Speaker
Likely a big part of that is due to the fact that this guy, he's an older man.
00:34:12
Speaker
He's throwing some...
00:34:14
Speaker
picks he can't necessarily keep up as much and it's unfortunate but still just an incredible thing to see a quarterback who was once playing all season long in the prime of his life uh kind of come back out and make a little another go at it just kind of cool to see so without further ado let's listen to a couple highlights from mr joe flacco
00:34:38
Speaker
Play action, Flacco to the air on first down.
00:34:40
Speaker
There's a toss into traffic, caught by Harrison Bryant.
00:34:44
Speaker
Second of 10 at the 33.
00:34:46
Speaker
Flacco to the sideline, wide open Elijah Moore.
00:34:50
Speaker
Second and 16, Flacco to throw over the middle two.
00:34:53
Speaker
The lo-fi beats continue.
00:34:55
Speaker
Apparently I was into that today.
00:35:21
Speaker
Hey, that's the vibe.
00:35:22
Speaker
I love it.
00:35:23
Speaker
After a long day at work, I just needed something to calm me down and it was the lo-fi beat.
00:35:28
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, hey, just knowing that he came off the couch and took the Browns to the playoffs, it'll make you run through a wall as is.
00:35:36
Speaker
So you don't need the pump-up hype music.
00:35:39
Speaker
Without a doubt.
00:35:40
Speaker
I mean, what a story.
00:35:41
Speaker
And yeah, congrats to Joe.
00:35:43
Speaker
He went from Super Bowl MVP with the Ravens to sitting on a couch eating potato chips.
00:35:47
Speaker
And now he's just making waves again in the NFL.
00:35:50
Speaker
Very well-deserved.
00:35:51
Speaker
I don't know if we had any honorable mentions.
00:35:53
Speaker
I know DeMar Hamlin was a huge vote-getter.
00:35:56
Speaker
Yeah, yeah.
00:35:57
Speaker
in the NFL's comeback player.
00:35:59
Speaker
Yeah.
00:36:00
Speaker
Demar Halen.
00:36:01
Speaker
Another one that I saw, which I, which I kind of agreed with was Matthew Stafford.
00:36:06
Speaker
And I don't think that you could necessarily say too much against him because he really was injured last year.
00:36:11
Speaker
Yeah.
00:36:12
Speaker
But there was a lot of talk after they won the Super Bowl.
00:36:15
Speaker
And then that last season, he was very injured and was kind of out of it for a bit.
00:36:21
Speaker
So there was a lot of talk that it was a flash in the pan for the Rams, that they weren't going to be able to make much, and that for Stafford, those injuries were just going to pile up.
00:36:30
Speaker
And for him to come back, he had a couple injuries this year again, but he is just one tough cookie.
00:36:35
Speaker
And again, going to the playoffs, an incredible job, honestly put up such a good fight against the Lions.
00:36:42
Speaker
I could absolutely see them back in the playoffs next year.
00:36:45
Speaker
So good on Danny Steph.
00:36:47
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:36:48
Speaker
Good shouts out.
00:36:48
Speaker
I think he's definitely earned

Debate on Justin Fields' Improvement as Comeback

00:36:52
Speaker
honorable mention.
00:36:52
Speaker
I think one more that we got to shout out that I just thought of is the guy in Chicago, Justin Fields, all the hate that he's gotten.
00:36:59
Speaker
Comeback player, huh?
00:37:03
Speaker
Yeah, he just, he had a down and out 2022.
00:37:06
Speaker
So 2023, he really took this team from two wins to seven, and that's got to be something that people celebrate.
00:37:11
Speaker
So shouts out, Justin.
00:37:12
Speaker
Can you come back if you've never been up to start?
00:37:17
Speaker
Well, he played for a national championship in college at Ohio State.
00:37:22
Speaker
But not in the NFL.
00:37:24
Speaker
Not in the NFL.
00:37:25
Speaker
I think a comeback is like, you're high, you're high, you crash and burn, and then you're coming back.
00:37:30
Speaker
Oh, yeah.
00:37:31
Speaker
You don't start low and like sort of start ramping up.
00:37:35
Speaker
Like that's not a comeback.
00:37:37
Speaker
She thinks she is so funny.
00:37:39
Speaker
I do think I'm funny, but I also think I'm right.
00:37:42
Speaker
That's not a comeback.
00:37:43
Speaker
Oh my, are we still talking about comeback player of the year?
00:37:45
Speaker
Oh my gosh.
00:37:45
Speaker
We should probably move on to the next award.
00:37:47
Speaker
We have three more, don't we?
00:37:49
Speaker
Oh my gosh.
00:37:49
Speaker
I can't believe we're talking about Justin Fields right now.
00:37:52
Speaker
Oh my gosh.
00:37:53
Speaker
He never had the crash and burn.
00:37:54
Speaker
So he can't, he can't be a comeback player.
00:37:56
Speaker
Right.
00:37:56
Speaker
He's just never been good enough to crash and burn yet.
00:37:59
Speaker
And the next award, folks, this is going to be a good one.
00:38:02
Speaker
And the next award for you to present is, wow, it's another Browns player.
00:38:07
Speaker
Who would have thunk it?
00:38:09
Speaker
Bob, why don't you talk to us about the defensive player

Myles Garrett as Defensive Player of the Year

00:38:12
Speaker
of the year?
00:38:12
Speaker
Maybe we need to diversify our portfolio next time and not do so much for the Browns.
00:38:18
Speaker
No kidding.
00:38:19
Speaker
We also don't like the Browns.
00:38:20
Speaker
What are we doing?
00:38:21
Speaker
We do not like the Browns.
00:38:23
Speaker
And also, spoileralert.com, now everyone knows that it's a quarterback on the Browns that won the Defensive Player of the Year.
00:38:30
Speaker
Psych!
00:38:32
Speaker
This is a player that I believe that we came to the conclusion that he won last year, right?
00:38:38
Speaker
I believe he did.
00:38:38
Speaker
And I have some thoughts on that.
00:38:40
Speaker
I didn't want to rock the boat too much, but...
00:38:43
Speaker
There are some other defenders that I'm like, I'm interested about the choice here.
00:38:48
Speaker
This year we did decide, obviously I didn't preface this, if you can't tell, we decided to do our awards together.
00:38:54
Speaker
Yes.
00:38:55
Speaker
So in last year or in years past, we've done separate ones.
00:38:59
Speaker
So I'm curious to hear your choice on this gentleman.
00:39:04
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:39:05
Speaker
And I'm also a little curious to hear that we weren't on the same boat here because I thought this was a 50-50 partnership here.
00:39:10
Speaker
I wish I would have heard about this.
00:39:11
Speaker
You know, I should have spoken up more for myself.
00:39:14
Speaker
I wish you would have.
00:39:15
Speaker
And now I'm just stuck with egg on my face, pants on my ankles.
00:39:17
Speaker
Oh, bless you.
00:39:18
Speaker
Thank you.
00:39:19
Speaker
But yes, I'd love to explain his stats and I'd love to also hear who you were thinking that, that is not named miles Garrett, but yeah, miles Garrett back to back defensive player of the year in the making waves end of the season award.
00:39:32
Speaker
Shouts out to you.
00:39:33
Speaker
I mean, you already got all this way you could possibly want for making waves.
00:39:36
Speaker
I know I sent you a ton more and I know I gave you a little, a little check for making waves.
00:39:39
Speaker
Sorry.
00:39:39
Speaker
That was, that was a secret.
00:39:40
Speaker
I wasn't supposed to say that, but I cut him a pretty, a pretty hefty check.
00:39:44
Speaker
So we'll, we'll talk about that off air, but yeah.
00:39:47
Speaker
What?
00:39:47
Speaker
He deserved it.
00:39:48
Speaker
I mean, that's what you get if you win two Making Waves awards in a row.
00:39:53
Speaker
You get some ownership in Making Waves.
00:39:55
Speaker
So we'll discuss.
00:39:56
Speaker
But yeah, he had an unbelievable year.
00:39:59
Speaker
He started every game.
00:40:01
Speaker
He ended with 14 sacks, two less than last year.
00:40:05
Speaker
He had 26 solo tackles, 42 combined tackles.
00:40:10
Speaker
Nine assisted tackles and four forced fumbles.
00:40:14
Speaker
But most importantly, he was the driving force on the defense that was one of the strongest in the NFL all season long.
00:40:21
Speaker
He was a integral.

Beyond Sack Stats: Defensive Awards Discussion

00:40:22
Speaker
Wow.
00:40:22
Speaker
Amazing word.
00:40:23
Speaker
Thank you.
00:40:24
Speaker
An integral part of this defense that got them back to the playoffs.
00:40:29
Speaker
And he's going to be an integral part of this defense if they're going to continue to.
00:40:33
Speaker
knocking at the door of the playoffs, and for an NFC North crown.
00:40:37
Speaker
So before we hear about who you think maybe should have won the award, a little bit of drama on this award night, I'd love to hear or see some highlights from Miles Garrett's record-breaking year....of the football that I've seen.
00:40:50
Speaker
The fact that he can stop and go in a millisecond.
00:40:53
Speaker
I don't think anybody on the planet can bend like him.
00:40:58
Speaker
Are you the best pass rusher in the league?
00:40:59
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:40:59
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:41:01
Speaker
No hesitation.
00:41:02
Speaker
No.
00:41:02
Speaker
And he cares to be the best.
00:41:04
Speaker
He will be the best.
00:41:06
Speaker
He lost Ronnie Stanley, a great offensive lineman, week one.
00:41:09
Speaker
Here's Jackson on first down.
00:41:11
Speaker
He's covered, and he's brought down.
00:41:13
Speaker
He's sacked by the league leader, Miles Garrett.
00:41:16
Speaker
Three guys to block him.
00:41:17
Speaker
I'm not kidding you.
00:41:18
Speaker
Three different guys could not block Miles Garrett.
00:41:23
Speaker
One, two, three.
00:41:25
Speaker
Big guys on the field.
00:41:27
Speaker
Miles Garrett's going to get him, and he knocks the ball away.
00:41:29
Speaker
It's another strip sack.
00:41:33
Speaker
Man, that makes me ready to run through a brick wall.
00:41:37
Speaker
Man, that was a good one for sure.
00:41:40
Speaker
For sure.
00:41:42
Speaker
Good job, Miles.
00:41:43
Speaker
Man, three guys can't block you.
00:41:44
Speaker
That's impressive.
00:41:46
Speaker
But yeah, Mac, who are you thinking also might have been deserving of this award?
00:41:51
Speaker
Well, I mean, a couple, honestly.
00:41:53
Speaker
And nothing against Miles Garrett.
00:41:55
Speaker
I appreciated those stats because I didn't realize that he was the lead leader in sacks and all those things.
00:42:00
Speaker
Thank you.
00:42:00
Speaker
Which is an incredible, incredible job, and that's great.
00:42:03
Speaker
But I don't know.
00:42:04
Speaker
I'm just thinking about defense as a whole.
00:42:06
Speaker
I know we a lot of times focus on sacks, but I think there's a lot more to defense, right?
00:42:11
Speaker
There's the passing and breaking up and the running, and you've got something to say.
00:42:15
Speaker
Go ahead.
00:42:17
Speaker
Oh, sorry.
00:42:17
Speaker
I didn't mean to interrupt.
00:42:19
Speaker
I just want to say, I just want to say, if you say Aiden Hutchinson here, I will find you and I will destroy you, but continue.
00:42:26
Speaker
I actually wasn't going to say him.
00:42:28
Speaker
You'll be surprised.
00:42:29
Speaker
Okay.
00:42:30
Speaker
Sorry.
00:42:30
Speaker
Continue.
00:42:31
Speaker
I'm just trying to say, like, I fully agree.
00:42:35
Speaker
Like sacks are a huge stat.
00:42:36
Speaker
And I think that's one that we focus on a lot, but I think there are a lot more that we can look at and run defense wise.
00:42:43
Speaker
Yeah.
00:42:43
Speaker
Yeah.
00:42:44
Speaker
I don't know if you realize this, but our boys have the number one and number two defense against the run in the 2023-2024 season.
00:42:54
Speaker
In my head, I'm like, why are we looking at some of our linebackers?
00:42:57
Speaker
Why are we looking at the Chicago Bears?
00:42:59
Speaker
Why are we looking at some of the Detroit Lions?
00:43:01
Speaker
Alex Anzalone, Jack Campbell.
00:43:04
Speaker
I don't know who your linebackers are, but...
00:43:06
Speaker
But that's pretty incredible that the two of us have some really strong defenders on our team.
00:43:11
Speaker
That was also a nice little subtle dig that you just didn't name either of ours, but name both ears.
00:43:14
Speaker
But sorry, continue.
00:43:15
Speaker
Who are yours?
00:43:16
Speaker
I'm curious.
00:43:17
Speaker
TJ Edmonds and, oh my God.
00:43:21
Speaker
Continue.
00:43:22
Speaker
Wow.
00:43:23
Speaker
Wow.
00:43:25
Speaker
Continue.
00:43:26
Speaker
But all that to say, I think there are a lot more.
00:43:28
Speaker
Another one that comes to mind on defense is the Ravens.
00:43:32
Speaker
I feel like their defense was just elite throughout.
00:43:34
Speaker
So thinking of Roquan Smith, just thinking of some other names.
00:43:37
Speaker
I'm not saying they should have won.
00:43:39
Speaker
I'm just thinking honorable mentions.
00:43:42
Speaker
And in my head, I'm just like, wow, there are some really good defenses out there.
00:43:45
Speaker
And I agree that the Browns were arguably the best defense.
00:43:49
Speaker
So I think it's a well-earned award, but I'm trying to spread the wealth here.
00:43:53
Speaker
And Miles Garrett, he just keeps winning.
00:43:56
Speaker
And maybe somebody just needs to stop him.
00:43:58
Speaker
But I think our boys actually, some of our linebackers and some of our defenders actually could be up there in the running because we both had strong run defenses.
00:44:09
Speaker
That's a great point.
00:44:10
Speaker
We got to spread the wealth.
00:44:10
Speaker
We got to sprinkle the, the words a little better.
00:44:13
Speaker
So unfortunately miles, unless you have about 50 sacks next year, you might not three Pete.
00:44:17
Speaker
And also it's Tremaine Edmonds and TJ Edwards.
00:44:20
Speaker
I'm so sorry.
00:44:21
Speaker
Yes.
00:44:21
Speaker
No head cold, but I thought you were going to say Montez sweat when you were talking about my boys.
00:44:26
Speaker
And that's why I got really excited.
00:44:27
Speaker
But Oh yeah, no, it wasn't, wasn't thinking about him, but I'm not necessarily only thinking of like edge rushers.
00:44:33
Speaker
I'm thinking we need to think of defense more holistic.
00:44:36
Speaker
Yeah, some linebackers, some gritty guys just getting in there and just popping you.
00:44:40
Speaker
Exactly.
00:44:41
Speaker
You know?
00:44:41
Speaker
Thinking of more of a defense than just the guys that get the sacks and get the glory.
00:44:49
Speaker
But it's exactly what we do on offense.
00:44:51
Speaker
We think of the quarterbacks.
00:44:52
Speaker
We think of the whitebacks, the guys that get the glory.
00:44:55
Speaker
You know who doesn't get the glory?
00:44:56
Speaker
Offensive linemen.
00:44:57
Speaker
Offensive linemen.
00:44:58
Speaker
Out there doing the work in the trenches.
00:45:01
Speaker
Good on them.
00:45:02
Speaker
Jason Kelsey.
00:45:03
Speaker
Cody Whitehair.
00:45:04
Speaker
Panay Sewell.
00:45:06
Speaker
I knew that was coming.
00:45:07
Speaker
Just the guys that are just.
00:45:08
Speaker
Jonah Jackson.
00:45:09
Speaker
Frank Bragno.
00:45:10
Speaker
An elite offensive line for the Detroit Lions.
00:45:13
Speaker
And they just don't get mentioned.
00:45:14
Speaker
So I'm mentioning them.
00:45:15
Speaker
Olin Krutz, Bears legend, just in the trenches for so many years.
00:45:21
Speaker
Let's give some shouts out to the offensive linemen, not just the defensive linemen.
00:45:24
Speaker
Stats are cool, but helping your team in other ways is also cool.
00:45:27
Speaker
So great.
00:45:28
Speaker
It's also very cool.
00:45:29
Speaker
Great reminder, McKenz.
00:45:30
Speaker
Great reminder.
00:45:31
Speaker
Just like the one who edits these videos, it's cool.
00:45:33
Speaker
It's important.
00:45:34
Speaker
But the one that goes through YouTube until his fingers are bleeding, trying to find the perfect videos, that's also cool.
00:45:40
Speaker
Also cool and important.
00:45:41
Speaker
And he doesn't get the recognition.
00:45:43
Speaker
So thanks.
00:45:43
Speaker
Thank you.
00:45:44
Speaker
Thank you.
00:45:44
Speaker
Thank you.
00:45:45
Speaker
I appreciate that.
00:45:45
Speaker
And, and speaking of recognition, speaking of recognition, we've had some great ads this year and this is a cool episode because we're just talking about some of the greatest players in the NFL.
00:45:56
Speaker
And I know it's been a long afternoon.
00:45:58
Speaker
You've been working hard.
00:45:59
Speaker
You've been editing hard, but the folks would love to hear a legendary, just really spot on ad.
00:46:07
Speaker
Please don't disappoint us.
00:46:09
Speaker
Hit us with an ad, baby.
00:46:11
Speaker
I keep on making me do this after, after the sheer frustration I have expressed to you from a, from a long, hard day's work.
00:46:22
Speaker
But you know, what better to, to bring up the spirits than to sing a little bit.
00:46:28
Speaker
So without further ado,
00:46:32
Speaker
Not happy about it, but... You just gave me a death stare, folks.
00:46:35
Speaker
Without further ado, this Making Waves NFL Awards show is brought to you by the one and only YouTube TV.
00:46:47
Speaker
NFL Sunday ticket is available for you at half the price, even though there's only one game left.
00:46:53
Speaker
Okay.
00:46:54
Speaker
YouTube TV.
00:46:58
Speaker
If you want to watch some football or maybe something else, YouTube TV.
00:47:06
Speaker
It's live Sunday ticket or something else.
00:47:12
Speaker
Why can't I think of any rhymes?
00:47:14
Speaker
Or something else.
00:47:15
Speaker
Oh, sorry.
00:47:19
Speaker
YouTube.
00:47:21
Speaker
Why can I not think of any rhymes?
00:47:22
Speaker
My brain isn't working.
00:47:24
Speaker
YouTube TV.
00:47:27
Speaker
If you want a Sunday ticket or something else, YouTube TV.
00:47:35
Speaker
If you want to watch The Office,
00:47:38
Speaker
Or something else.
00:47:39
Speaker
Oh, man.
00:47:40
Speaker
That has got to be one of the best.
00:47:42
Speaker
Rhyme something with something else.
00:47:44
Speaker
Help me.
00:47:46
Speaker
I don't think that's a good thing to say to try to rhyme something is something else.
00:47:49
Speaker
I think you could have just said like,
00:47:52
Speaker
Reality TV.
00:47:53
Speaker
See, I mean, I'm not a good person to ask.
00:47:58
Speaker
The second time I was doing it, I was trying to redo it and rhyme with something else.
00:48:02
Speaker
Oh, believe me.
00:48:03
Speaker
I'm aware that you tried to do it again and it ended up in the exact same spot, baby.
00:48:07
Speaker
That was good.
00:48:08
Speaker
Help me out.
00:48:09
Speaker
How do you rhyme something else?
00:48:11
Speaker
Send us a DM, folks.
00:48:13
Speaker
Send us a DM.
00:48:14
Speaker
If you can rhyme something else.
00:48:17
Speaker
Paige, Maddie, and Vince, any of our other five to seven listeners, please.
00:48:22
Speaker
Send us a DM.
00:48:23
Speaker
What rhymes with something or else?
00:48:26
Speaker
Something else.
00:48:28
Speaker
Kels.
00:48:30
Speaker
Kels.
00:48:31
Speaker
If you want to see Travis Kels, because his real last name is Kels, not Kelsey.
00:48:36
Speaker
Oh, okay.
00:48:37
Speaker
Catching Kels.
00:48:38
Speaker
That was his original dating show, right?
00:48:40
Speaker
Yes.
00:48:40
Speaker
Good one.
00:48:42
Speaker
Oh.
00:48:45
Speaker
commercials about gels, something else, or just commercials about gels.
00:48:50
Speaker
Also, you were literally guitaring there at the end.
00:48:53
Speaker
I don't know if you noticed that.
00:48:54
Speaker
Was I really?
00:48:55
Speaker
But you were literally going like this, and you always do the same little dance.
00:48:58
Speaker
When you start your jiggle, you always go like this, like a little mini dance.
00:49:01
Speaker
And I just, I love it.
00:49:03
Speaker
And that just goes to show folks, not everything in life has to be prim and proper.
00:49:07
Speaker
Max ads are usually just, she has, you know, something to rhyme, something else.
00:49:10
Speaker
And that was one of my favorite ones.
00:49:12
Speaker
And I'm not being sarcastic.
00:49:13
Speaker
YouTube TV.
00:49:14
Speaker
Shout out to you.
00:49:15
Speaker
You can watch.
00:49:16
Speaker
I even just Googled it.
00:49:19
Speaker
It's mostly slant rhymes.
00:49:21
Speaker
Myself, self, smells, fouls.
00:49:26
Speaker
Wow.
00:49:26
Speaker
Wow.
00:49:27
Speaker
I wouldn't necessarily say those rhyme.
00:49:28
Speaker
So anyway, that was a rough, that was a rough choice by me, but it's all right.
00:49:34
Speaker
It's all right.
00:49:35
Speaker
And I'm sticking to that.
00:49:36
Speaker
YouTube TV.
00:49:37
Speaker
If you want to watch football or something else, that's actually true.
00:49:40
Speaker
You can watch YouTube TV.
00:49:41
Speaker
A hundred percent.
00:49:42
Speaker
And after next Sunday, there's going to be a lot of something else to watch on YouTube, YouTube TV.
00:49:47
Speaker
Sorry for putting you on the spot.
00:49:48
Speaker
I don't think I would have had the kahunas to do that if I was still in North Carolina.
00:49:50
Speaker
So thank goodness for a little bit of distance here, this episode, huh?
00:49:55
Speaker
Yeah, you wouldn't have had the kahunas, would you?
00:49:57
Speaker
I don't think I would have.
00:49:59
Speaker
With that, now that Mac is so thrilled with me, let's just move on.
00:50:02
Speaker
I'm thinking of kahunas.
00:50:04
Speaker
I can think of somebody who's got some big kahunas.
00:50:06
Speaker
Excuse me.
00:50:09
Speaker
I know where this is going.
00:50:10
Speaker
I don't know where this is going in a minute.
00:50:12
Speaker
I already do.
00:50:13
Speaker
Stick with me, listeners.
00:50:15
Speaker
This...
00:50:16
Speaker
guy has got some big, who knows.
00:50:20
Speaker
He's got maybe the biggest.
00:50:22
Speaker
A lot of people would agree with that based on his just outright disregard for general rules of following games.
00:50:36
Speaker
I truly believe that he has helped to shift
00:50:40
Speaker
the world of NFL into one that is less conservative and one that is more aggressive in terms of going for the first down when it is fourth down.
00:50:53
Speaker
And I'm talking about a coach here.
00:50:55
Speaker
So we try to give out an award and recognize a coach every year.

Dan Campbell: Coach of the Year

00:51:02
Speaker
And it's hard to do highlights, but, but you'll see, you'll see what I did here shortly, but
00:51:07
Speaker
We try to recognize a guy that has taken a team and has taken it from somewhere that it was, which is not good, and has turned them into a good team, a good, solid team.
00:51:18
Speaker
And there were a couple honorable mentions here.
00:51:20
Speaker
There's a lot of incredible coaches out there.
00:51:22
Speaker
We got to give a shout out to everybody.
00:51:25
Speaker
Obviously, if you know me and if you know that I have any say in any of these awards, which I do, putting up my boy Dan Campbell for this award.
00:51:37
Speaker
He's actually in the running for the actual NFL award.
00:51:42
Speaker
I saw today he won one of them already.
00:51:45
Speaker
Him and Brad Holmes won Executive of the Year.
00:51:48
Speaker
Dan Campbell won Executive of the Year.
00:51:50
Speaker
So already winning awards, but obviously, as we've already said, making waves is the biggest award you can win.
00:51:56
Speaker
Of course.
00:51:56
Speaker
And Dan Campbell, let me just tell you a little bit about the story of this man.
00:51:59
Speaker
He joined the Detroit Lions three years ago in the 2021 NFL season.
00:52:05
Speaker
He played for the Lions throughout his career at some point.
00:52:10
Speaker
Obviously, he wasn't this staple household name.
00:52:13
Speaker
But he comes back 2021.
00:52:14
Speaker
He gets hired.
00:52:16
Speaker
His first interview, just buck wild.
00:52:18
Speaker
This man is just wild.
00:52:19
Speaker
Like we said, he's got kahunas.
00:52:21
Speaker
And his first interview, he's talking all this stuff about the team and who the team is going to be.
00:52:28
Speaker
They go out.
00:52:28
Speaker
They only win three games in his first season.
00:52:33
Speaker
Since then, in 2022, they won nine games.
00:52:37
Speaker
In 2023, we won 12 regular season games.
00:52:40
Speaker
So the first year, he wins only three.
00:52:43
Speaker
Since then, he's won 21 regular season games.
00:52:47
Speaker
He comes out, he's changing just the shape and the structure of the Detroit Lions.
00:52:53
Speaker
Him, Brad Holm, Sheila Ford, all of the management in Detroit, they're changing the structure of the team.
00:52:59
Speaker
And they're taking a team
00:53:01
Speaker
That honestly, and I can say this and you can say this too.
00:53:04
Speaker
Honestly, a team that is known for being one of the worst in the NFL in my lifetime.
00:53:12
Speaker
I don't think I can say that.
00:53:13
Speaker
I don't think you'd allow me to say that.
00:53:14
Speaker
You can't because I would come there despite the distance.
00:53:19
Speaker
Oh, you'll come here if I say it?
00:53:20
Speaker
Oh my gosh.
00:53:21
Speaker
Well, in that case.
00:53:23
Speaker
No, I mean, let's be honest, though.
00:53:24
Speaker
They've been one of the worst, and he's taken a team, and he's trying to make something out of them.
00:53:28
Speaker
So I'm impressed by that, let alone the record last year.
00:53:33
Speaker
A couple other things.
00:53:34
Speaker
Obviously, this year was record-breaking for so many reasons.
00:53:37
Speaker
We won our first playoff game since 1991.
00:53:41
Speaker
We tied our season franchise record of the most games that we've won in a season by winning 12 regular season games.
00:53:49
Speaker
He's just doing a lot with the culture there in Detroit.
00:53:52
Speaker
I'm excited about it.
00:53:53
Speaker
Not always excited about his fork down calls, but that's his identity and he's not changing for anybody.
00:53:59
Speaker
So let's listen in to some Dan Campbell highlights.
00:54:03
Speaker
This ought to be good.
00:54:05
Speaker
Welcome to Detroit.
00:54:10
Speaker
Wanted this job bad.
00:54:12
Speaker
because I felt like I knew this community, I played here.
00:54:15
Speaker
This team is gonna take on the idea of this city.
00:54:18
Speaker
We're gonna kick you in the tee, all right?
00:54:20
Speaker
And when you punch us back, we're gonna smile at you.
00:54:22
Speaker
And when you knock us down, we're gonna get up.
00:54:24
Speaker
And on the way up, we're gonna bite a kneecap off, all right?
00:54:27
Speaker
And we're gonna stand up, and then it's gonna take two more shots to knock us down, all right?
00:54:31
Speaker
And on the way up, we're gonna take your other kneecap, and we're gonna get up, and then it's gonna take three shots to get us down.
00:54:36
Speaker
And when we do, we're gonna take another hunk out of you.
00:54:38
Speaker
Before long, where's it gonna be the last one standing?
00:54:41
Speaker
Jeez, that's a little intimidating.
00:54:43
Speaker
My gosh.
00:54:44
Speaker
So if you recognize that, that's his very first interview he did in the announcement that he was going to be the head coach.
00:54:51
Speaker
It's this whole thing in Detroit about how he says they're going to knock us down.
00:54:54
Speaker
We're going to take a kneecap off.
00:54:56
Speaker
They're going to knock us back down.
00:54:57
Speaker
We're going to take a hunk out of you.
00:54:58
Speaker
He's just talking about biting players.
00:55:01
Speaker
Obviously, this past weekend, we got knocked down.
00:55:03
Speaker
But you know what?
00:55:04
Speaker
We're going to come back up, and you're not going to have any kneecaps left.
00:55:07
Speaker
So get ready.
00:55:08
Speaker
Rest of the NFL, you've got put on notice.
00:55:11
Speaker
I'm sticking with Dan Campbell, and he's my coach of the year.
00:55:14
Speaker
Wow.
00:55:15
Speaker
Question.
00:55:15
Speaker
If all the Bears players are just wearing knee pads, is that fine?
00:55:18
Speaker
It doesn't matter.
00:55:19
Speaker
They're going to rip them off with their teeth, and then they're going to bite the kneecaps with it.
00:55:24
Speaker
Blonde everywhere.
00:55:26
Speaker
We don't condone violence on this podcast.
00:55:29
Speaker
We do.
00:55:31
Speaker
That was a scary face when she said that too.
00:55:33
Speaker
This whole Lions culture is really taking on an identity of its own.
00:55:37
Speaker
Geez, oh man.
00:55:38
Speaker
Yeah, he said we're going to take on the identity of the city.
00:55:41
Speaker
And you know what the city is?
00:55:42
Speaker
His favorite word?
00:55:43
Speaker
Grit.
00:55:44
Speaker
We provide grit.
00:55:46
Speaker
And we're down and out right now, but we're coming back up and we're going to smile at you through bloody teeth because your kneecap is in our mouth.
00:55:54
Speaker
Jeez.
00:55:55
Speaker
Oh my gosh.
00:55:56
Speaker
Through bloody teeth.
00:55:56
Speaker
That sounds like a horror film.
00:55:58
Speaker
I mean, I'd rather watch a drift every day of the week for the next month.
00:56:02
Speaker
Holy smokes.
00:56:03
Speaker
We're going to smile at you through bloody teeth.
00:56:05
Speaker
Yeah.
00:56:05
Speaker
Then I'm going to sprint away and I'm going to get the heck out of Detroit.
00:56:08
Speaker
Oh, we know what?
00:56:10
Speaker
Shout out to Dan Campbell.
00:56:12
Speaker
I will be sending you all the swag we have because I don't want my kneecap to be bitten off.
00:56:16
Speaker
And if you need any money or anything else, let us know.
00:56:19
Speaker
We are at your beck and call.
00:56:20
Speaker
So congrats, Dan.
00:56:23
Speaker
Congrats, Dan.
00:56:24
Speaker
Love you, man.
00:56:25
Speaker
Let's go get a Super Bowl next year.
00:56:28
Speaker
All right.
00:56:28
Speaker
Or not.
00:56:29
Speaker
Don't say anything.
00:56:30
Speaker
Without further ado, we have our second advertisement of the episode before our
00:56:38
Speaker
Number one award is to be given out.
00:56:40
Speaker
So take it away, Bob.
00:56:41
Speaker
It's time for a word from our sponsors.
00:56:44
Speaker
Didn't see this one coming.
00:56:46
Speaker
Today's special award episode, second advertisement on February 1st, 2024, here in Chicago, Illinois, is brought to you by Ace Knee Pads.
00:57:02
Speaker
Protect your knees.
00:57:04
Speaker
Protect your knees.
00:57:05
Speaker
Put it on when you're playing volleyball.
00:57:08
Speaker
Protect your knees.
00:57:09
Speaker
Protect your knees.
00:57:10
Speaker
Put it on if you're in Detroit.
00:57:12
Speaker
Ace bandages for athletic muscles or protecting your appendages.
00:57:25
Speaker
Dang it.
00:57:25
Speaker
I was so close.
00:57:27
Speaker
Get an ace bandage at your local Walgreens for $8.99 or two for $24.99.
00:57:30
Speaker
Dang it.
00:57:31
Speaker
I was so close.
00:57:39
Speaker
it was going.
00:57:40
Speaker
I liked where it was going.
00:57:41
Speaker
Honestly, it wasn't bad.
00:57:42
Speaker
It was pretty good advertisement.
00:57:44
Speaker
I also love to watch you because you get so serious and your eyes just like, I don't know what you focus on in the distance, but you just lock in on something while you're like thinking of.
00:57:54
Speaker
Do I actually?
00:57:55
Speaker
Yeah, your eyes just, I don't think you blink.
00:57:57
Speaker
You just lock in somewhere in the distance and you're just going for it.
00:58:02
Speaker
Oh man, just locking into the kitchen tile wall.
00:58:05
Speaker
And unfortunately it didn't help me as you can tell, because came up with appendages rather than something that rhymed.
00:58:10
Speaker
But you know what?
00:58:11
Speaker
Ace bandages, $8.99 for one or $24.99 for two.
00:58:16
Speaker
A great deal for two or more if you want.
00:58:19
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:58:19
Speaker
Yeah.
00:58:20
Speaker
Ace bandages.
00:58:20
Speaker
Get them if your kneecaps are bloody.
00:58:22
Speaker
Yeah.
00:58:23
Speaker
I mean, hey, if you're around any Lions fans, get some ace bandages.
00:58:28
Speaker
Awesome.
00:58:28
Speaker
Well, with two advertisements in the rear view mirror, we have one award left.
00:58:34
Speaker
It is the biggest award of the season.
00:58:37
Speaker
Let's take it away, Bob.
00:58:39
Speaker
Tell us who's going to win Wavemaker of the Year.

Lamar Jackson: Wavemaker of the Year

00:58:46
Speaker
Splash.
00:58:49
Speaker
Drum roll, please.
00:58:52
Speaker
Thank you.
00:58:53
Speaker
Oh, that's an amazing drum roll.
00:58:56
Speaker
So wave maker of the year.
00:59:00
Speaker
This embodies who me and Mac, I still can't get over that drum roll.
00:59:03
Speaker
That was unbelievable.
00:59:04
Speaker
You're going to love listening back to that.
00:59:05
Speaker
That was incredible.
00:59:06
Speaker
I'll give you another one if you want.
00:59:08
Speaker
Yeah.
00:59:08
Speaker
Can you please?
00:59:09
Speaker
Yeah.
00:59:09
Speaker
Once you are about to announce it.
00:59:11
Speaker
Okay.
00:59:12
Speaker
This individual was not only the MVP of his team.
00:59:17
Speaker
He was not only the MVP of his division.
00:59:21
Speaker
We believe that he was the MVP of the entire NFL without him.
00:59:26
Speaker
His team would have been nothing without his dynamic running and passing.
00:59:30
Speaker
Oh, gasp.
00:59:31
Speaker
It's a quarterback abilities.
00:59:32
Speaker
His team would be nothing.
00:59:33
Speaker
And unfortunately,
00:59:35
Speaker
He didn't get it done last weekend when it mattered the most.
00:59:38
Speaker
But this player is electric.
00:59:39
Speaker
He completely redefined the quarterback position.
00:59:42
Speaker
He ended the year with a 102.7 quarterback rating.
00:59:47
Speaker
He threw for 3,678 yards.
00:59:51
Speaker
He threw for 24 touchdowns, only seven interceptions.
00:59:56
Speaker
And once again, he almost ran for 1,000 yards.
00:59:58
Speaker
Helped his team compile the best regular season record in
01:00:02
Speaker
in the entire NFL beating teams like the Niners and the Dolphins and the Lions and everybody else that was in their way.
01:00:09
Speaker
Drum roll, please.
01:00:11
Speaker
That's unbelievable.
01:00:14
Speaker
She's actually drumming as well.
01:00:15
Speaker
The wave maker of the 2023-2024 season is, I'm sorry, Mr. Jackson.
01:00:22
Speaker
Ooh, I am for real.
01:00:25
Speaker
Lamar Jackson.
01:00:27
Speaker
Splash.
01:00:29
Speaker
Jackson with pressure coming.
01:00:32
Speaker
Keeps the play alive.
01:00:34
Speaker
Jumps over a defender and still going.
01:00:36
Speaker
Does he have any room?
01:00:37
Speaker
And he comes close to a first down.
01:00:39
Speaker
Lamar winding up.
01:00:41
Speaker
Going deep for Bateman.
01:00:42
Speaker
He's got him.
01:00:42
Speaker
Touchdown.
01:00:43
Speaker
Touchdown to Jackson on first and 10.
01:00:46
Speaker
Oh, and he's got Bateman.
01:00:47
Speaker
Off to the races.
01:00:48
Speaker
Chased by Holland.
01:00:49
Speaker
Chased on the play by Howard.
01:00:52
Speaker
And there he goes.
01:00:54
Speaker
Touchdown.
01:01:00
Speaker
Third down two.
01:01:02
Speaker
It's Jackson.
01:01:03
Speaker
Oh my gosh.
01:01:05
Speaker
Here he goes.
01:01:06
Speaker
He'll sprint.
01:01:07
Speaker
He's being chased by Howard.
01:01:11
Speaker
Looking behind.
01:01:12
Speaker
You can kiss him goodbye.
01:01:14
Speaker
Touchdown.
01:01:15
Speaker
I mean, we brag on Lamar Jackson as a runner.
01:01:18
Speaker
With a guy I can sit in the pocket and throw with the best of him.
01:01:22
Speaker
Oh, saving the best for last.
01:01:25
Speaker
Me and Mac were just vibing there.
01:01:26
Speaker
Lamar, what a season.
01:01:28
Speaker
Talk about some hype music.
01:01:30
Speaker
Mac, what do you have to add?
01:01:32
Speaker
I just agree with what that last announcer said.
01:01:34
Speaker
I think we hype a lot about how Lamar Jackson can run, but I feel like this year we really saw his development as a pocket presence and somebody who can also throw deep bombs.
01:01:48
Speaker
Obviously, he's getting paid for a reason.
01:01:51
Speaker
He's the highest paid quarterback in the NFL.
01:01:54
Speaker
Or no, he was temporarily, right?
01:01:56
Speaker
He definitely was.
01:01:57
Speaker
I think Joe Burrow maybe
01:02:00
Speaker
took the lead for them to be out.
01:02:01
Speaker
I don't know.
01:02:02
Speaker
Either way, he's one of the highest paid.
01:02:04
Speaker
He's getting that money.
01:02:05
Speaker
He deserves it.
01:02:06
Speaker
He proved it this year.
01:02:07
Speaker
And the Ravens, they're going to have their shot.
01:02:09
Speaker
They're going to have their shot with Lamar.
01:02:11
Speaker
They are, they're going to get there.
01:02:13
Speaker
It's just a matter of when it's kind of hard.
01:02:16
Speaker
Cause it's like, ah, not this year, then when, but if he can keep doing what he's doing, incredible job, MVP caliber, clearly, obviously shoe in to win the MVP of the actual NFL season.
01:02:29
Speaker
awards this is more important but yeah great job with mar honestly all the way around great season great job great season and yeah great little synopsis there i also think they're gonna have their chance and as long as he's healthy i think they're really gonna uh be a force to be reckoned with so what an episode all those awards obviously the hardware is gonna be sent out but uh yeah we're gonna have to have to
01:02:55
Speaker
Oh, it looks like we lost our co-host Bob there, but that's all right because we were wrapping up anyway.
01:03:03
Speaker
So without further ado, please just join us in our outro.
01:03:08
Speaker
Thank you all for joining and we'll see you next week for the Super Bowl predictions.
