Episode Introduction & Holiday Wishes

00:00:07
The Amazing Rewatch
Hello, oh everybody. Wow. it's out at the It's picking up the microphone a lot. um Do I sound loud?
00:00:32
The Amazing Rewatch
yeah We have tried to record it yeah about seven times since last week. Yeah, we have been meaning to record this a lot, many times. We're friendly finally doing it.
00:00:43
The Amazing Rewatch
It's funny how that, I don't know, just sometimes certain episodes are just like, oh, oh yeah, I can't do that. Okay, let's do it tomorrow. Okay, that sounds good. Oh, wait, I forgot about this.
00:00:55
The Amazing Rewatch
Well, it's just this time of year. Yeah, it really is. Right now. Just pretty crazy. Yeah. But here we are. So we hope you are all having or had good Christmas and happy holidays. And we will start into the episode. We

Ghana School Task & Non-Elimination

00:01:13
The Amazing Rewatch
left off in Ghana. And the end of the last episode...
00:01:17
The Amazing Rewatch
And Phil said that they would be helping the children like ah do some remodel on their school. And so we get a little bit of footage of that. And it was nice to see them do that. It was they all seem to be happy and enjoying that experience. And then. Yeah.
00:01:35
The Amazing Rewatch
We also had a non-elimination last week. Michael and Kevin did not get eliminated. So they will have a speed bump this episode. Yeah. And we so we were in Ghana for two episodes. So obviously we'll be traveling.

Race to Sweden: Flight Challenges

00:01:47
The Amazing Rewatch
um Connor and Jonathan are the first to depart at 1015. And the clue says fly 45,000 miles from the furnace to the freezer to the city of Karuna, Sweden. Due to limited flights out of Ghana, teams have been given tickets but are not under no obligation to use them. When they land, teens will have to drive to the nearby town of Yucastri. I think the J is ah the Y sound, even in the middle. So Yucastri. Yucastri. Home to the world famous ice hotels.
00:02:21
The Amazing Rewatch
In the nearby warehouse, they'll find their next clue. So this ice hotel, it's summer right now. The ice hotel is stored in a warehouse on site to keep it frozen throughout the summer.
00:02:33
The Amazing Rewatch
They have to go there to get their next clue.

Missing Graduation for the Race

00:02:35
The Amazing Rewatch
So Connor and Jonathan tell us that this leg is taking place during their graduation from university. And so they're kind of bumm they're missing that. But they said this is like a fun experience for them. They're glad they're here.
00:02:47
The Amazing Rewatch
Gary Mallory departed 1119, which is like an hour That's an hour later. yeah what So Connor and Jonathan just really, really outsmarted everybody on that detour last episode with the definitely the symbols and all of that.
00:03:02
The Amazing Rewatch
Yeah, and then Chad and Stephanie, 11.29, Katie rachel twelve twelve nikibiki twelve twenty three brook andlaire twelve twenty four jill and Thomas, nat and cat one twelve and michael and michael and kevin one twenty six we have a hundred and eighty four dollars for this leg of the race um and they're all headed to the airport Yes.

Airport Strategies & Tight Connections

00:03:24
The Amazing Rewatch
Except for Nick asks the cab to take him to the Arctic Circle. Yeah. They get in the taxi and close the door and Nick's like, Arctic Circle, you know? And And he wants to drive him to the Arctic Circle. 45,000 miles. That's far.
00:03:35
The Amazing Rewatch
forty five thousand miles that's far 45,000 miles. I would not have guessed that it was that far. But Africa is so big. Yeah. Like, we just, like, don't comprehend because, like, the way that a globe is, you know, or, like, a map when it's flat, like, Africa looks the same size as, like, or a little bit bigger than South America. But because it's, like, right there in the middle and it's, like, just, like, goes over, like, that whole half of the earth. It's so big.
00:04:02
The Amazing Rewatch
Yeah. We... Just by looking at a map or a globe, we really don't comprehend how big Africa is, but... Yeah, so I have a long ways to go. Back to europe Europe. We were in Europe for one leg, down to Africa for two, back up to Europe.
00:04:16
The Amazing Rewatch
So that's interesting. um When they get to the airport, they find out the flight check-in is at 4.30. But some teams are starting to decide starting to use their smarts to find better flights. So when Kevin and Michael get in their cab to the airport, they borrow the phone, the cab driver's phone. Mm-hmm. They make a phone call and they find out that there is a flight departing Frankfurt at 735 instead of 951. So that's like two hours ahead.
00:04:44
The Amazing Rewatch
So what, it's like just a shorter layover in Frankfurt. So... They all are going to lay over in Frankfurt.

Frankfurt Airport Dash & Ice Hotel Clue

00:04:50
The Amazing Rewatch
Yes. Just one is leaving. to And it only gives them an hour in Frankfurt, which is scary, but also a risk to take because then. know there will be another one. Yeah. Two hours later. Yes.
00:05:01
The Amazing Rewatch
Definitely. Definitely risk that. It's different if you were flying to another city with a one hour layover and didn't know there was going to be. Right. Another flight two hours later. But they get to the airport and they decide to tell Gary Mallory because they're the other like.
00:05:15
The Amazing Rewatch
Parent child team. Yeah. Parent child team. And um they're like, let's use Mallory to ask somebody for help because she's so smiling and she's just happy. And yeah, just charming. And they get the tickets secured.
00:05:32
The Amazing Rewatch
And some other teams are looking over at them, like Jonathan and Connor, and they're like, why are they smiling so much? What's going on there? They must know something we don't know. So Nat and Kat, they go to like a internet area of the hotel yeah to look for flights and Brooke and Claire see them and they go over there and they work together to get the same tickets as well. Mm-hmm. Jonathan Connor are told that it's fully booked by the time they look into it.
00:06:02
The Amazing Rewatch
Yeah. Which is a bummer for them. So there's two flights departing Frankfurt to go to Sweden. So that first flight two hours earlier has Michael and Kevin, Gary and Mallory, Brooke and Claire, and Nat and Kat.
00:06:14
The Amazing Rewatch
The second flight has everybody else. Mm-hmm.
00:06:16
The Amazing Rewatch
But there's a very tight connection in Frankfurt. And so, like, those four teams that have to catch that earlier flight are hustling off the plane and through the airport. And they're, like, running. And Michael and Kevin get in an elevator.
00:06:30
The Amazing Rewatch
yeah And it doesn't seem like they're going to make it Yeah. But they do. They do. Luckily. That would be really sad if if they didn't. And it was all their idea. Yeah. um So when they land, they have to drive themselves to that ice hotel.

Dog Sled Roadblock Challenge

00:06:45
The Amazing Rewatch
And they don't really have too hard of a time. But the girl, two girl teams get there first. And the clue is etched on a huge block of ice. a huge block of ice. And they have to figure out that the it's leading them to the Fjรคllborg Lodge to find their next clue.
00:07:05
The Amazing Rewatch
And then the other teams. But the words are in Swedish. Yeah. So it doesn't say Fjรคllborg Lodge. It says something else. And yeah. um And this is where Michael and Kevin's speed bump is here. and what they have to do is to sit on the furniture made of blocks of ice for 10 minutes. Easy. Easy.
00:07:23
The Amazing Rewatch
Yeah. I mean, uncomfortable, but easy. Yeah. No traveling, no trying to find directions. No, if you can't do it. Yeah. No shaving your head. Yeah.
00:07:34
The Amazing Rewatch
Well, the shaving your head was a fast forward, not a speed bump, but still it's way easier than other speed bumps. Yes. And they you know, they sit there and they say after a few minutes, cause they're like in, in shorts. Mm-hmm.
00:07:45
The Amazing Rewatch
and not very thick clothing and they're like it does it did start to hurt after a little while but they would just kind of like yeah rotate which way they were sitting and they finish and they get to move on and they get there first yeah like get to the next place first yeah which is weird which is a roadblock and it says who's feeling kind of mushy So since the ground is covered in snow eight months of the year in Lapland, dog sled is the fastest form of transportation. In the off season, the dogs have to stay in shape though. So the task is to ride a training sled down a forest trail and snatch five flags along the way, then trade the flags for a fur pelt.
00:08:28
The Amazing Rewatch
For each flag that they miss, they have to perform a penalty penalty lap around the hunter's camp, then lead the dogs back to the start of the course and trade the pelt for a clue.
00:08:39
The Amazing Rewatch
So the the flags are like hanging above on white, I don't know, like something. And they just have to like grab it above their head and pull it off of whatever it's hanging on some sort of pole or whatever.
00:08:57
The Amazing Rewatch
So Michael is going to do the roadblock. That's the dad. And then the other teams arrive and Mallory, Claire, and cat are doing the roadblock. And they're all kind of like right pretty close next to each other, like kind of even passing each other.
00:09:15
The Amazing Rewatch
Mallory misses one of the flags and has to do a an extra lap, but it doesn't seem like it takes very long. And then this is when the second flight arrives. So it doesn't seem like it's two hours.
00:09:28
The Amazing Rewatch
The timing. the driving themselves. I know, but it'll be interesting to see the time like the departure times but um next leg.
00:09:39
The Amazing Rewatch
But it seemed like
00:09:41
The Amazing Rewatch
they like the second set of teams was doing the roadblock as the other teams were doing the detour. Yeah. Yeah. So it didn't seem like it was that far apart, like that much time in between.
00:09:54
The Amazing Rewatch
anyway. Yeah, I don't know. um Yeah, so the Michael actually finishes the roadblock first, and the clue says teams must drive through the Swedish countryside to the Basujare train station to find their next clue.
00:10:09
The Amazing Rewatch
And then Klaire, Mallory and Kat finished pretty closely behind him. All the other teams from the second flight had got to the ice hotel, got the clue and start arriving to the roadblock. See, that's what I'm saying. like I feel like those teams like had not left the roadblock very much before the other teams arrived.
00:10:26
The Amazing Rewatch
I don't know. But the people that are doing the roadblock are Stephanie, Connor, Katie, Nick, and Jill. But Jill goes the wrong way. So Jill and Thomas arrive last in their vehicle to the roadblock. And when they get out, they start running...
00:10:42
The Amazing Rewatch
Like to the left. Oh, yeah. Through the forest. Instead of going to the right where the roadblock starts. So they're just like running through this forest in the wilderness with no no like flags or anything leading them anywhere. They're just like running. um And finally figure out they're going the wrong way. Jill keeps saying they're going the wrong way and Thomas keeps yelling at her.
00:11:03
The Amazing Rewatch
But finally they get there and Jill does the roadblock. So. And one of them said they ran like um probably a mile. Yeah. The wrong direction. So those other teams, yeah, they're doing the roadblock as the first set of teams start arriving to the next clue, which is the detour.
00:11:21
The Amazing Rewatch
Michael and Kevin

Detour: Tech Sleds vs. Gaudi Assembly

00:11:22
The Amazing Rewatch
get there first. The clue is sleds or beds. So for sleds, they have to make their way to the top of a mountain and use an extreme sports gadget called a tech sled to slide down a difficult course and reach the finish line in less than 1 minute 58 seconds.
00:11:40
The Amazing Rewatch
If they don't finish in time, they have to go back to the top and try again. Like they have to go back up on ski lift and try again. And then beds ah make their way to an encampment of Sami people who are the descendants of the earliest Scandinavian nomads.
00:11:55
The Amazing Rewatch
Using traditional materials, they must build a tent-like dwelling known as a gaudi. And when they complete the structure and make the inside comfortable for sleeping, they'll get the next clue.
00:12:06
The Amazing Rewatch
I would choose sleds for sure. i would choose sleds for sure because... If you try it a couple times, you've only wasted a few minutes. And if you get it on the first try, it only took you two minutes. So yeah you might as well. but Plus the time to go up on the ski lift. but Yeah.
00:12:24
The Amazing Rewatch
Still. But they, Michael and Kevin choose beds because they don't think that Kevin or Michael. Michael, the dad can do the sleds. Which when you see the other teams doing the sleds, like it is pretty, it's um it's like, you know, throwing them around and they're falling a lot and going right off the edge of the mountain pretty much. So, um and it kind of seems the beds one kind of seems difficult at first to get everything situated and organized. And then once you get, it up it goes pretty quickly from there anyway so all the other teams start arriving um oh the other teams are doing their roadblock so jill starts the roadblock last and they're already talking about the oh we have our they have the express pass
00:13:12
The Amazing Rewatch
And Jill kind of seems like she wants to use it, but um Thomas tells her to do the roadblock and she doesn't really struggle. But all the other teams finished the roadblock, didn't really have any issues.
00:13:23
The Amazing Rewatch
I don't think anybody in the second batch missed a flag. I don't think so either. um So when the teams are arriving to the detour, Gary Mallory, well, everybody choose sleds except for Michael and Kevin first.
00:13:37
The Amazing Rewatch
um As Nat and Kat are sledding, um like Nat, she gets it in one minute and 47 seconds, but Kat is really struggling. She ends up like going through the fence and she gets stuck and stuck and stuff.
00:13:52
The Amazing Rewatch
um Gary and Mallory do it and they are only one second over on their first try. Well, Mallory did โ€“ her time was 1.58, but they have to be less than 1.58. Yeah.
00:14:05
The Amazing Rewatch
So โ€“ So they do it on their second try, which is awesome. So they're first to finish the detour. No. Oh, no. Nancat also got on their second try. their second try. They're just a little bit before Gary Mallory.
00:14:17
The Amazing Rewatch
Their clue says, drive across the frigid landscape to this proverbial line in the snow, the norreent the Norwegian border To check in for the pit stop on this leg of the race, the last team to check in may be eliminated.
00:14:29
The Amazing Rewatch
Brooke and Claire get it on their first try. in like way. Brooke got it in 135. Yeah. That was really fast. So it's really interesting how some teams don't have a hard time and some teams really have a very hard time with this. Like Connor Jonathan. Yes. so For example.
00:14:46
The Amazing Rewatch
Connor doesn't really struggle, but Jonathan does big time. And Connor's a good teammate because he's like, he's trying his best and that's all I can ask for. Yeah. Chad and Stephanie, on the other hand, yes Stephanie is really scared. She's like terrified. She's like shaking crying. Why would you even choose this one? Right. If you're like, because she's like, I don't like to go fast down hills. And I'm like, then why would you choose a task called sled if you have another choice? Probably because Chad made her. Probably. And then when she keeps telling him she hurt she doesn't want to do it, he just keeps yelling at her.
00:15:19
The Amazing Rewatch
So she falls a lot of times and she just like really struggles and is really just upset. And she's like, I'm done. I'm done. He's like, well, don't even try or anything.
00:15:32
The Amazing Rewatch
They're just like yelling at her and stuff. And they end up switching. So Connor and Jonathan switch, Chad and Stephanie switch, um Katie and Rachel switch, which I was surprised that they weren't able to do the yeah sledding because they're pretty athletic. um Nick and Vicky got the sleds pretty easily.
00:15:51
The Amazing Rewatch
um Yeah, so there's kind of that first group is finishing the detour. The second group is either finishing the detour or switching detours.
00:16:02
The Amazing Rewatch
So ends up being team number one to check in our Nat and Kat. And they went a trip to Belize. And then Gary and Mallory are number two. Brooke and Claire are number three.
00:16:11
The Amazing Rewatch
And Michael and Kevin are number four. So all four teams from the first plane were the first four teams. Top four. Yeah. Yeah. It does take Connor and Jonathan a while to switch, though.
00:16:22
The Amazing Rewatch
They tried a lot of times before they switch. However, so Jill and Thomas, who did they did try sleds, right? um and don't know if they even tried or they chose beds.
00:16:37
The Amazing Rewatch
From the very beginning. From the very beginning. And they like get to the area and they see all the equipment they have to put together. And they're like, we're going to use our. Yes. Express pass.
00:16:48
The Amazing Rewatch
And then they like see Jill and Thomas or they see the other teams like putting up the tent. They're like, see, we would have had to been doing that. It's good we did this. So they use their express pass and they check in as team number five.
00:17:01
The Amazing Rewatch
Yeah. Which you don't know this at the time because there's some so teams that are still trying to sled. Yeah, that haven't switched yet. That haven't switched That are going to. i think they could have done it and kiss kept their express pass and still checked in as team number five. Yeah, but they didn't know that. So that is hard. That would, I mean, when you watch back and they're like, oh, we totally could have yeah had that. And I wonder how much of a difference it'll make. But um yeah, Nick and Vicky end up being team number six because they did pretty well with the sleds.

Nat & Kat's Victory, Graduation Missed

00:17:32
The Amazing Rewatch
Yeah, I think they did on their first try.
00:17:34
The Amazing Rewatch
And so Chad and Stephanie were the first ones to switch, I think. Yes. And they, like, start building and Chad is, like, determined that they are last because they're the only ones so far that have switched. And then they see Katie and Rachel show up. Mm-hmm.
00:17:56
The Amazing Rewatch
And they're are like all excited. Yeah. And then. then And then Chad is nice to her now. Yeah. Now that they're not going to be eliminated. yeah just um And then finally Connor and Jonathan switch. I don't know why they tried for so long. Right.
00:18:12
The Amazing Rewatch
Because they're smart too. Like they could have figured out instructions to build something. Yeah. Like they should have switched way earlier. Yes. um So Chad and Stephanie finish and um they check in with team number seven. So the last two teams doing it are Katie and Rachel and Connor and Jonathan.
00:18:33
The Amazing Rewatch
And they kind of edit it to be like Katie and Rachel, they finish, but they ask for a check and they don't pass and they have to fix a few things. And John and Connor. Yeah. Jonathan and Connor pass it off like the first try, you know, so. Yeah. It's what's going happen, but it ends up being Katie and Rachel, our team number eight and Connor and Jonathan, our team number nine.
00:18:55
The Amazing Rewatch
And as they walk up to the mat, they are singing the... the bone bump bum bum boom yeah boom their graduation They really sing a lot the last two episodes. The first episode they did. Two and three, they really didn't.
00:19:08
The Amazing Rewatch
The end of this episode, way too much singing. It was just annoying to me. noticed it that I'm glad they didn't really sing that much the last two episodes. They're really nice, people. Oh, and they're eliminated.
00:19:20
The Amazing Rewatch
Did we say that? So they missed their graduation to get eliminated. and they checked They were first last episode. Yeah. That's unfortunate. um They really seemed like good guys and good friends and they worked well together as a team and they were supportive of each other. So sad to see them go.
00:19:37
The Amazing Rewatch
Yeah, I did like them. And i I don't know. They just silly things that โ€“ because they left an hour before everybody else. They had plenty of time to start looking for other flights, but they didn't do it until they saw others doing it. Yeah.
00:19:53
The Amazing Rewatch
Right. And they're with their're smarts. They should have known that. And then they took too long to switch detours. Yeah. So they deserve to be eliminated, but it's sad to see them go. Yeah. yeah um i'll tell you a little bit about the area and then you can tell us about them okay so was gonna say we're only like 19 minutes in this is really fast what have we missed 19 minutes yeah wow um sweden this is our third time to sweden we visited sweden in season six
00:20:25
The Amazing Rewatch
fifteen and seventeen So, isn' in six yeah um Sweden is a Nordic country located on the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe. It's bordered by Norway and Finland.
00:20:40
The Amazing Rewatch
um It's the largest Nordic country by both area and population. It's the fifth largest country in Europe. Its capital is Stockholm. It has a population of 10.6 million.
00:20:52
The Amazing Rewatch
It has a low population density. 88% of Swedes reside in urban areas ah in the central and southern half of the country.
00:21:05
The Amazing Rewatch
And how many percent? 88 88 percent. 88 percent. And it's a highly developed country ranking fifth in the Human Development Index. It's a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy.
00:21:20
The Amazing Rewatch
um Which means they have a king or a queen, but also like a prime minister. Yeah. um Sweden maintains a Nordic social welfare welfare system that provides universal health care and tertiary education for its citizens. it has the world's 14th highest GDP per capita. It ranks very highly in quality of life, health, education, and protection of civil liberties.
00:21:48
The Amazing Rewatch
It's competitive in income equality, gender equality, and prosperity. It joined the EU in 1995 and NATO in 2024. Really? Yeah. That was pretty recent. It's a member of the United Nations, um the World Trade organs Organization.
00:22:08
The Amazing Rewatch
um The area that we go to in this episode is called kar Kiruna so that's kind of like the largest city in the northern area of Sweden that's what they fly into once they fly into there they drive themselves to some surrounding areas but this is like the city of this the northern part of Sweden which right now they have no sun at all yeah it's like the when you just passed the winter solstice a couple days ago
00:22:39
The Amazing Rewatch
So it's only five degrees there right now. Five Celsius? And they're instead of sunrise and sunset, they have moonrise and moonset, which is weird. I wouldn't like that. No.
00:22:51
The Amazing Rewatch
And on December 10th was the last day of sunrise-sunset. The sunrise was at 11.19 and sunset was 11.44. They had like 30 minutes of sun. Isn't that so? That is wild. Especially, well, yeah it's like very warm.
00:23:09
The Amazing Rewatch
Here for like what time of year it is. It's the end of December and it was like... It got up to the 67 in Salt Lake City. Yeah. it's It's way too warm.
00:23:20
The Amazing Rewatch
So it does not feel like winter. No. and But I would not like it to be dark all day. So this area is It is located in like the Arctic Circle. 17,000 people live in this municipality.
00:23:38
The Amazing Rewatch
um It was built in the 1890s to support a mine, an iron ore mine. um Sweden was... neutral during World War II.
00:23:51
The Amazing Rewatch
um And like the railways going in and out of this area to the mines and stuff were heavily guarded. um In 1948, it officially became a city.
00:24:02
The Amazing Rewatch
um and the tourism grew. because And the Ice Hotel was created in 1990, which is a huge attraction for tourists all over the world. That also doesn't sound fun to me.
00:24:17
The Amazing Rewatch
No. how do they How do they do that? I don't know. Like... Okay, so it's... ah
00:24:36
The Amazing Rewatch
Each year, artists from all over the world come to design and sculpt the hotel. They create amazing art and unique rooms. When spring arrives, the hotel slowly melts back and much of it is harvested and kept alive.
00:24:50
The Amazing Rewatch
in warehouse throughout the summer. Yeah.
00:24:54
The Amazing Rewatch
Sleeping on ice. Doesn't sound fun to me. No, I don't get it. Because of the mine, the city is actually sinking and has to be moved. has to be relo They have to relocate the city two miles away, which is a huge project that will happen over many years.
00:25:11
The Amazing Rewatch
Yeah. Huh. So, yeah. It is... cold there but sweden is a happy place to live we are going to visit sweden in two years did you hear that part of the plan no because we're we're gonna do like a family history tour to denmark which is where like our grandpa his family comes from but Denmark is just a little ferry ride away from Sweden so we're gonna go to Sweden one day oh nice of the trip cool and we were gonna do this trip in 2028 but we've decided to move it up to 27 so yeah two years yeah now less than two years yeah 26
00:25:53
The Amazing Rewatch
Yeah. And speaking

Sweden Travel Plans & Ancestry Revelations

00:25:55
The Amazing Rewatch
of that, like I was telling Sadie and my family, we were talking about like the ancestry DNA kits and, you know, we talk about how much family comes from Denmark, but actually in my DNA is only, it was like Danish and it was like Swedish.
00:26:16
The Amazing Rewatch
I'm much more Swedish genetically than Danish. I know. I need to. I want to do that. You should do They probably have like a holiday sale. I know. That's what I'm looking at right now.
00:26:28
The Amazing Rewatch
Yeah. And my results were really interesting because they had it narrowed down to like a very specific region of England. Because so my our dad's side of the family I think both grandma and grandpa, there's their ancestors are from England on dad's side. So I was like 50% English, but narrowed down to like a very specific region, which I thought was pretty cool. yeah
00:26:58
The Amazing Rewatch
And I can't believe that when we were in England, we didn't do any like, because we drove around a little bit of the countryside of England. We should have found a a spot, a family history site, but just have to go back because I loved England.
00:27:12
The Amazing Rewatch
Yeah, so this is, they're only $30. They're usually $100. Yeah, get it. Do it right now. You should get to, we should, do you think grandpa would do it? No. Why? If we asked him to spit in a bottle and send it off to, in the mail, I don't think he would do it.
00:27:28
