Clown in a Cornfield (2025)

This week on the Everything Actioncast, Zach and Chris try to avoid the wrath of Frendo and discuss Clown in a Cornfield, which hit theaters earlier this year and is out on Blu-ray/4K . (Spoiler Warning)

Based on the YA horror novel by Adam Cesare, Clown in a Cornfield follows teenager Quinn Maybrook (Katie Douglas) and her father Glenn (Aaron Abrams) as they move from Philadelphia to the small town of Kettle Springs, MO. Once famous for its Baypen Corn Syrup factory, the town has fallen into a rundown state. Quinn befriends a group of teens who create viral horror movies and pull pranks on each other, who fill her in on the local legend, Frendo the Clown. Frendo becomes all too real when he appears and starts killing the group one by one. Zach and Chris discuss Quinn's shaky Philly accent, how the villain's plot helps the town's financial situation, the movie's best kills, the clever twists on the slasher genre, similarities to movies like Hot Fuzz and Thanksgiving, and more.

You can watch Clown in a Cornfield on Shudder or check out the new physical release. Next week, we're wielding The Glaive and discussing Krull, which is arriving on 4K for the first time.

Hello and welcome to the Everything Action Cast podcast week of September 8th, 2025. I'm your host Zach. I'm co-host Chris.

Review: 'Clown in a Cornfield'

00:00:26
Speaker
And this week we're trying to escape a clown in a cornfield. ah were We're talking about the 2025 slasher movie that came out earlier this year.
00:00:33
Speaker
It's actually on physical media this week. It's on Blu-ray and 4K. i think it's also been on streaming on Shudder for a while. um But ah coincidentally, we watched it in person last week. Chris, you were up my way for Scare-a-Con in Syracuse, New York.

Scare-a-Con Experience

00:00:51
Speaker
So we actually, we were in the ah scary movie mode. So we watched Clown in Cornfield together.
00:00:58
Speaker
And then it was like, just coincidentally, it just quit neally was just like, oh, it's actually, it's coming out ah on, like, 4K this week. So we kind of we got pulled it off. we We were going to talk about Creepshow for, because there's a new Stephen King movie out, obviously, with the long walk. But this kind of worked out better.
00:01:14
Speaker
Yeah. ah Don't get me wrong. We love a good Stephen King movie. and Creepshow, yeah, Creepshow is one of my all-time favorites, but... And then having it be like just the start of the fall, and then the start i mean return of Scarecon, it was just the perfect mood for it.
00:01:37
Speaker
The only thing that could have been better was that if like more breweries had like fall beers that weren't just Oktoberfest and Pumpkin. like If they had more flavor things.
00:01:48
Speaker
I want to drink a Liquid Leaf. LAUGHTER um Anyway, so ah what would have been also cool

Plot Analysis of 'Clown in a Cornfield'

00:01:56
Speaker
is that if we had like a clown theme beer to go with this, because ah let me tell you, the the lead up to Clown the Cornfield when it was coming out back in like March, it came out theaters in May of May.
00:02:15
Speaker
Yeah, and and it was like, just a the title was so, like, direct, and there was no mystery, and then it's what I suspected, where, like, it's either gonna be a movie that is, like, a surprise, where it's like, you think it's gonna be one thing, and then it's another, or it's gonna be straight up, it's just a clown on a cornfield, you know? Like, there's no, you know, deeper meaning.
00:02:40
Speaker
Yeah, it could be like, you know, one of those movies on like, Tubi or something, where it's just like, has, like, the AIR. It's just, like, avalanche. Like, I don't know, like, all those Amityville movies, like, Amityville Toilet or whatever. Yeah, yeah. And you're like, what?

Comic-Con Experience: 'Clown in a Cornfield'

00:02:57
Speaker
But I knew it was going to be special when I was at San Diego Comic-Con, and I did see that the clown, the cornfield, like, experience was there. Because they don't just do that for everybody. I mean, it's not like a... It's whoever has the money to do it.
00:03:11
Speaker
like was like this It was, like, this year's Comic-Con? Okay. Yeah, when I saw the advance sign up and then the line for it, and then the experience of trying to run from Frendo, that was interesting.
00:03:28
Speaker
And, you know, instead, I did King of the Hill, trying to get in the aliens thing, other things. But I think Clown the Cornfield does have, like, I think they they show you the photos of people. Like, it was more like a haunted house experience that they do around, like, this time than...
00:03:45
Speaker
ah than like, you know, something where like you just eat corn or so, you know, it would have been a bit of a dumb experience where like you think it's going to be like a scare house.
00:03:57
Speaker
And then it turns out it's not. It's just like the history of like corn in America. Here's how we make corn syrup. i think that have been funny. Like you think you really think it's like you're going to be something, but then it's like, oh, no, this is meta. This is meta upon meta.
00:04:13
Speaker
And that's one thing we we realized, like, I think, because both me and you were just excited about the premise. We didn't really ah do more research. I think, like, I barely watched the trailer. I was like, I'm just interested to see what this is.
00:04:25
Speaker
And I'm better for it. It was definitely, it was on my radar because Eli Craig.

Eli Craig's Direction and Style

00:04:30
Speaker
cause like I totally forgot that. I knew he was directing it, so i was like, oh, Tucker and Dale for Zeeville is like incredible.
00:04:36
Speaker
so um i I did not. As someone who forgot like what the who was responsible for this, it was such a like different experience. like Not knowing that, not realizing that until, like what, I think one third of the way. that's what I think like we were watching it, and I looked at you, and i was like, something about those movies seem familiar.
00:04:58
Speaker
Well, I think I did forget, and then I was like, oh, right. it's like Because when it when it started like actually like kind of getting like more like um meta and and like more like Tucker and Dale a little little bit, I was like, oh, yeah, right. It's like Craig directed this.
00:05:12
Speaker
When you find out what is za is it actually going on. and ah and And it's kind of like... Not every movie needs to be meta, but I don't mind this once in a while, like the the like mix in, because it like it's for fans. like This movie is definitely for horror fans.
00:05:32
Speaker
Yeah, I don't think... It's definitely not as clever as Tuckernale, but like this is just a very fun, solid like slasher movie. An old-school slasher movie with some like a little bit more clever twist in it and some more...
00:05:44
Speaker
more like More ideas like a normal one is having. like ah it is a campy B slasher movie. Yeah. And I was all about that because, again, the premise was fun.
00:05:55
Speaker
the The intro was interesting. But you could definitely tell, like, there was limitations somewhere.
00:06:05
Speaker
And we'll get into that. Budgetary, because they had a million dollar budget. Which, it doesn't feel like it's a million dollars. No, yeah, like, they Lots of great practical effects, like just galens of blood gushing out everywhere.
00:06:20
Speaker
Like tons of tons of like clowns and costumes. Well, we don't spoil that fact just yet, but um the only thing that it kind of lacks, which is interesting, is that the story kind of forgets to tell certain parts, which I can't tell that's super accurate to the book.
00:06:40
Speaker
Yeah, because it is this is all based on a book first.

Book vs. Film Comparison

00:06:43
Speaker
Yeah, it's based on like a young adult ah horror novel by Adam Caesar. Same same title. um i don't don't I don't know if the book is as like bloody as the movie. I'm assuming probably... I'm assuming the book is probably more like in like the fear street of young adult. Now, it's not like it's not Goosebumps. It's not like a kid-y horror movie. it's It's more like a fear street Christopher Pike or something.
00:07:07
Speaker
If anything, it's like, oh, and then like friendo slashes this guy's neck and then that's it. Like it cuts to the next day. yeah doesn't really, i don't, I imagine, uh, for a lot of teens reading this, this is probably their like big horror book that they kind of fell into.
00:07:27
Speaker
especially when, first of all, you gotta be up for like a horror thing. You gotta up for like clowns. And then you gotta have like an interest in, um hometown adventures that are not stranger things because the basic premise of the beginning is that like, uh, uh, someone comes, someone new comes this town and just gets Lord dumped ah about like the gossip, the, the, the industry, the like rivalries, the, the hostile tension.
00:07:59
Speaker
And, uh, I do like how the movie does kind of like forget that because at some points, the movie feels like Gilmore girls, You know, where it's like the townspeople problem or like the drama.
00:08:16
Speaker
Yeah, it's it's all about like the different characters in town and what they're up to. or like We learned a lot about like them.
00:08:27
Speaker
So yeah, I guess I guess I guess jump in. um I think you kind of said yes. I guess we'll do spoiler warning up atop. um just because it's a newer movie. It's like it's literally just coming out on like you know physical media this week. There's been another way to see it for a while. If you haven't seen it, i would say like just stop pause this, stop this, go watch it. It's a ton of fun. and Especially for like this you know spooky season. It's like it's great. like ah you know If you want to see something for this year that's a fun slasher movie.
00:08:58
Speaker
Which, I mean, just this year's been like awesome for horror. like yeah know We had like Sinners, we had The Monkey, we had Final Destination Bloodlines, we had Weapons. that Usually what happens is when the world is kind of shite,
00:09:14
Speaker
the movie reflects sort of the time. So, yeah, like, this is... If you think about it, it's sort of like why 80s movies, slasher movies are so good. It's because like Reaganomics ruled.
00:09:26
Speaker
So then you get like a response. So what was going

Horror Films and Societal Issues

00:09:30
Speaker
on? Yeah. Yeah. yeah And then now we have basically Clown the Cornfield, which is hodgepodge of modern social issues plus like classic terrifying like slasher tropes.
00:09:46
Speaker
Which, again, i saw that and I was like, I'm all about this. I think that the halfway part I was just like, hell yeah, this is definitely like better than I expected. So yeah, that's the fair warning about spoilers.
00:10:01
Speaker
And then we'll get into it now.
00:10:05
Speaker
yeah think I think the first scene, I think you but think you're still confused about. I am too, because it doesn't... mean They explain it a little bit later on, but like it that really it's really... kind of like a cold open just to get into it, but it doesn't really... tight Establish anything? Yeah.
00:10:21
Speaker
It's just like 1991 is when it starts, and it's like these teens partying your barn, and there's couple sinks off to the cornfield, and then they they are killed by a clown,
00:10:35
Speaker
and In the core. Yes. So, wasting no time to, like, get to the title. Yeah, and that's why I was like, alright, it's gonna be straightforward, but then the guessing game of, is the clown a person, or is the clown supernatural?
00:10:52
Speaker
that's That's what, like, we started thinking. Yeah, that's part of the funnel I think, of it, is, this like, you're trying to figure out what's happening, like, is it, is Frendo the Clown, like, an evil, demonic entity, like, Pennywise, or is...
00:11:04
Speaker
like someone in town dressing up like friendo and killing people and he's like a serial killer and then a very cool thing happens later where turns out it's more than like than that like it instead of um the supernatural who can be there everywhere it's just like a cult a very niche cult that we still don't know the motivations like economically this is terrible for the town Even though the cult whole ideology is that we must protect the town.
00:11:41
Speaker
And... See, is this is what happens when you eat too much corn? Like, too much corn syrup or whatever? like yeah Yeah. I don't understand the economics.
00:11:54
Speaker
And then, like, what the grand plan was. Well, what is happening in town? Like... Because, like, in 1981, the factories are already closed down, I think. So it's like... They closed in 1991?
00:12:06
Speaker
I think it's what, i yeah, I think that's what, like, like, Wikipedia says it's like, yeah they probably needed Town's old, like, corn syrup factory. So I think i think the corn syrup has already been, like, not going on for a while.
00:12:22
Speaker
So i don't know I don't know what the town is like is like doing to like make money or like survive okay okay so is it implied that in 1991 there was an incident that happened there and then that factory got shut down and then it took like another generation to bring it back and then it's like oh shit it's happening again
00:12:43
Speaker
I don't even know, like, did it did it come back? Because, like, in the present day, I even think, like, it's definitely not. No, it's happening. It burnt down. Right, so, that's what I'm confused about, just because, like, the teens must have been partying near the original cornstarch factory, right?
00:13:00
Speaker
Mm-hmm. Because I think that's also the same barn they partied later in the movie. Yeah, it it definitely is, yeah. Okay. So that's, like, a site of, like, historical, like, accident.
00:13:12
Speaker
Then... it's implied that like the, the family has just been like maintaining a level of like balance, I guess, where it's like when they realize like the teens are too ratty, they go and kill a few. Mm-hmm.
00:13:32
Speaker
Because it doesn't seem like that group who get the the like the couple that gets murder in the cornfield. It's not like they were the bad guys, right? Like they were just like, we don't know anything about that. big stuff We don't know. is that that's ah That's the heart. I was like, what?
00:13:47
Speaker
So, yeah, that's why i'm like, OK, maybe we'll get revealed. And then we just never return to that. So i'm like, all right, cool.
00:13:55
Speaker
Uh, But yeah, then came the like, maybe they'll address certain things about Frendo. And they do. And... And... don't know. I enjoyed the premise of it, but like the small details of like why he... Why they need to kill the teens for economic reasons.
00:14:14
Speaker
That is like the crazy like, huh. I don't know it's economic reasons or it's just because... like they think they're, like, sullying the name good name of the town or something, and they want, they're like, they're trying to maintain, like, Bay Penn's, like, like, good standing.
00:14:32
Speaker
To who? Like, it's not like they have See, like... Okay, so, let's break down the beginning. After the call open, then it turns to a father and daughter who are still grieving the death of, like, their mom, and ah just sight unseen, moves into the new town, is the new doctor...
00:14:52
Speaker
Like, moving from Philly fight via Canada. Because everyone everyone in this movie is Canadian. Even though I think, they are they supposed to be, like, in Canada, or are they in America?
00:15:06
Speaker
No, it's in, like, Missouri. Okay.
00:15:10
Speaker
I forget that they're in Missouri. It didn't really matter that she was American going to, like, Canada or Missouri. Like, this could just be any town that has, like, corn. Yeah, well, I mean, she's, I think, like, K.E. Douglas, like, Quinn is supposed to be, but like, you know, from Philly.
00:15:26
Speaker
Which she tries her hardest. She says, I'm from Philly. Right, right, but she tries her hardest to put on a Philly accent, and it's all, all sorts of weird. Like, if anything, he should sound like Mac from It's Only Sunny.
00:15:41
Speaker
But she doesn't. Or, you know, or something D'Andrea. Yeah, mm-hmm.
00:15:47
Speaker
But she doesn't. She has this, like, hybrid Canadian accent, which leaks out a few times.
00:15:54
Speaker
Also, we we pointed out that, like, she's supposed to play, like, 17 or maybe 16 or something. or Like a senior, maybe? 18, maybe? Yeah.
00:16:06
Speaker
But, like, the dad character and her don't look that far apart in age. Yeah. So it was just, like, distracting. We're like, what? Yeah. I think I think i read, like, she turned 25 when they were filming this.
00:16:17
Speaker
Right. So, you know, we're like, oh, that's just, like... It's not, like, too creepy, but we're like, that's just but the guy and his young girlfriend in this car. And I've definitely seen much more egregious, like, oh, I'm a high schooler, but I'm, like, 40. Yeah.
00:16:33
Speaker
like like there's been like so many different examples like um yeah i think the classic one is like luke perry when he was playing like uh yeah like the
00:16:49
Speaker
like the whole cast was like we're high schoolers it's like you're blatantly like all like 30.
00:16:57
Speaker
No, I understand that. That is ah kind of like the problem. Because it's like, they they kind of act like horror trope high schoolers, which I'm fine with.
00:17:10
Speaker
That's the illusion. and And the fact that it does sell. Like, at some points are like, I don't mind that they don't act like full teens because like, It's supposed to move fast.
00:17:22
Speaker
And it does, the the middle does move a little bit quick. And then it drags just a bit in the middle. You know, like, when you basically have to, like, learn way more about the town, and but, like, not in the right details. Like, it's more like ah Quinn trying to deal with the struggle of her mother.
00:17:42
Speaker
Like, you know, her mother's death. Which, it's not like that pays off later, like, in a big way, where, like, she gives Frendo cancer or something, you know? but more Or, like... but Did your mother die of, like, an overdose or something?
00:17:54
Speaker
Yeah! See? Like, I'm trying to think. Like, it's not like she gives drugs to, like, another clown or something. You know? Like, it was just like, oh... What? or Her character arc is she learns how to drive ah stick shift.
00:18:10
Speaker
That's her big, like, learning thing in the movie. Yeah, you're right. learning thing in the movie yeah you're right ah I mean, I guess in Canada or Missouri, it's just like, oh yeah, no, driving manual is a requirement, even though this is like a progressive town.
00:18:27
Speaker
yeah it's like It is pretty funny to think that... um even in a modern story, because this is set in supposed to present time, they go to the small town and it's like time capsule of like the 80s, even though it's 19, like even when they kind of flashback to 1991, it's okay. That one looked like just modern day Canada.
00:18:51
Speaker
They didn't really do big up. There should have been like a spin doctor song playing. Yeah.
00:18:59
Speaker
Barenaked ladies. They were those too early for them. little too early. You gotta to think. That's 1991. It's like they barely got Nevada. It probably to be something Canadian because I think all the bands that they featured in the movie are also Canadian.
00:19:13
Speaker
Rush? Yeah. ah But I like the the diverse

Teen Dynamics and Pranks

00:19:21
Speaker
group of friends. It's like everyone in this group shouldn't be friends but somehow they are.
00:19:26
Speaker
And I i like that they make horror movies, so it's like that's kind of like the running thing. And it's like a funny thing. of like they They don't believe anything's happening. they think They're constantly pranking each other, too, with horror-like tropes.
00:19:38
Speaker
And like in like like, oh no, I got killed! Psych! So it's like, but when things actually start happening, they don't believe it. They're just like, oh, these fuckers are trying to prank me again. like How crazy is the like friend pranking budget that they can do all this?
00:19:56
Speaker
That they make like an like an actual like short film. Yeah, like camera angles, timing, sound. Fake blood. Well, I guess I say fake blood is no problem because they like apparently I think unlimited corn syrup to make fake blood with, I guess.
00:20:11
Speaker
Because it's the town makes corn syrup or did it make corn syrup. Used to make it. But then it's like because that dried up, like wouldn't corn syrup be expensive in that town now?
00:20:21
Speaker
There's just like yeah like jugs of it just sitting in the in the factory still. But then the factory burned down. Yeah, so I'm like, huh. ah Also, the corn syrup commercials they make, those wannabe viral videos, they're not bad.
00:20:35
Speaker
They would make people buy corn syrup products so you can film things. And then, like, Frendo, if you made a TikTok with Frendo, wouldn't that take off your brand?
00:20:46
Speaker
Like a Frendo TikTok? Like it became like a TikTok channel? Like Frendo the Cloud? And so, it is one of the weird parts of the movie where the older town people don't like the teens is because they think, like, they're disrespecting the, like, brand of corn syrup and then they're ruining the morality of the town.
00:21:06
Speaker
You're like, Fredda built this town! But, like, they didn't have a backup plan if you kill these teens. Like, you just... These people were the only things people are paying attention to.
00:21:17
Speaker
And then you kill them and then it's like, then what? It's like, you you're just gonna go double broke we're gonna bring corn syrup back after that it makes factor wouldn't that make sense for the to like kill like the internet in that town or something crazy where it's like oh you know what ruined these teens like the internet so we must destroy like the internet company in town or something
00:21:45
Speaker
Yeah, that's... like because the town is already already The town is dead, basically. Their their main their main industry is gone. so it's like and It's been gone for a while, so I don't know i don't know what the group that's doing things is you know like trying to like have come about from their actions.
00:22:05
Speaker
Because it's it's like... there's no other industry. You're not like making anything else or there's like no one's coming to your town to visit it. like well i mean People still live there. you're just Your main employer is gone.
00:22:18
Speaker
People still need services. and I've driven past like dead towns. I live near one where a processing company factory close and they didn't know what to do and ah it was kind of sad. but Yeah, it's like a steel it's like a steel town, or a steel like if you had a steel mill that was your main thing in your town and it closed, then it's just like... yeah but like But the local day-to-day, which I guess is like the only person who was really affected by this was like ah the neighbor kid whose father used to work in the factory.
00:22:48
Speaker
yeah He's the one where they got like the one mention where it's like, oh, my dad used to provide, but now I need to hunt at night to eat.
00:23:01
Speaker
Rust. Yeah. mean By Vince Muller. Like. Yeah, he he he basically was just like living off the grid.
00:23:13
Speaker
But we never see his family. Like, that's another thing about this movie. A lot. You don't see a lot of parents. You see a lot of dads, but you don't see moms. Or siblings. You just loose teens. Yeah.
00:23:26
Speaker
Yeah, like the like the main group is just like kind of running around by themselves with no supervision. ah yeah like you you always like You see Quinn's dad and you see ah like Cole's dad, who's the mayor.
00:23:40
Speaker
I do like that there is like that hangout at winds and a Cole's awesome barn party that I think Quinn gets drunk at.
00:23:57
Speaker
I think, yeah. Well, they don't they go they go to like he go to the Burndown Factory? Yes, that one. That's what I'm saying. That's like their first hangout. is like And then they pull the prank on her.
00:24:07
Speaker
they They make a new viral video where like like one of them dresses like Frendo. like I think it's like the one friend, Tucker, like goes to take a piss and he comes back and is like, Oh my god, i got stabbed!
00:24:19
Speaker
like And they trick her. Yeah, that I do enjoy the subversion of that. But then there was that other kind of like hint that Frendo is also there, which... Yeah, quint Quinn watched the video later, then she like zooms in, there's like another Frendo behind, in like the background, watching them.

Iconic Weapons in Slasher Films

00:24:36
Speaker
Okay, so to spoil all this some more, Frendo turns out to be the town- like certain townspeople? Yeah, it's- Who is that person? Yeah, like, do we see that? Because don't see their weapon. like ah Like, I think they're they're kind of, like, distinguished by their weapons they use. Like, there's a different friendos use different weapons.
00:24:57
Speaker
Like, one has a chainsaw, couple have knives, like, one has, like, a pitchfork. Which, I guess, it's, like, a nod to, like, um like previous slasher villains. Like, the chainsaw's obviously, ah like, a, not like, that's, like, a text, like, a Leatherface nod, and then, like, the knife is, like, Ghostface or Michael Myers.
00:25:14
Speaker
okay And the pitchfork is like Jason from like part two, I think. he had the bag over his head.
00:25:24
Speaker
But yeah, I didn't understand like what was the goal for them. Was that Frendo like, oh shit, I'm going blow my cover? Or like, was he waiting to kill one of them? Well, I think our theory to start with was that I think we were going off to think of, like, the friendo's, like, ah ah like ah an entity, maybe? Like, some sort of demon.
00:25:43
Speaker
And if you dressed like him, or, like, you know like, kind like, made fun of him, that he would come and kill you? do like that there was, like a rule. There was, like, a thing about it. Because it's, like, the two the two people, the first two people that get killed dress like friendo, and then they get killed. but So that kind of seemed like the thing of, like, oh, you're you're disrespecting friendo, you get killed by the actual friendo.
00:26:03
Speaker
Which we're a fine with. Like, cool, we established some rules. Mm-hmm. But... Yeah, I'm just thinking, like, what was the... That Frendo doing?
00:26:14
Speaker
Was that just, like, one of those, like, oh shit, I shouldn't have been there? Or... Was that just, like, a Frendo statue left behind? Just a scouting mission? Like... Just, like, confirming, yep, definitely gonna kill these kids.
00:26:27
Speaker
Yeah, how dare they make viral videos?
00:26:34
Speaker
I like the idea that, like... Uh... the cult people, like the killer cult people, they're they're trying to make their own friendo videos and they're jealous of the teens making like better quality photos and stuff.
00:26:51
Speaker
Because, again, the the but i get like why um the leader of this is
00:27:04
Speaker
kevin duran Yeah, who is awesome and everything. yeah He kind of, like, loses his mind, like, at the end. It's like this big, like, slow burn to get to that part, but it's not like... You just get, like, he's kind of upset with his son for having, ah like, potentially burnt down that factory.
00:27:29
Speaker
Like, they do a good job of, like, hinting at that. But there's no, like... what his plans are. you know He's just like disappointed mayor.
00:27:40
Speaker
And and they're they're rich somehow. we They just have like like family wealth, I guess. Yeah. And then ah that's why I'm kind of confused about like he's a bad... Was he just like the bad businessman? Like he's so crazy?
00:28:01
Speaker
Also, did like... Did, like, Kevin... i mean, did, like, Cole's mom around? I don't know. I don't remember seeing her. she's She's, like, in a... She's in, like, the scene like the one... Like, the scenes at their house, but then don't think she, like... She may have, like, one line or something, but she's not really involved in anything. So she is not, like... Does she know what's going on? She's not there when the reveal happens, I guess maybe not.
00:28:27
Speaker
mean yeah Maybe not. Captain Dark... i don See, like there's so many questions for the third act that everything kind of builds up to. um'm I'm left like, what about that?
00:28:41
Speaker
So... the The clowns, the Frendo clowns do play like small pranks leaving toy boxes around.
00:28:53
Speaker
Which is their calling card where it's like, oh, if you play if you pick this up, like it's only a matter of time before Frendo finds you. Which i think we also we also I think we also thought, like, oh, if you pop you've popped the jack in the box, then that summit like that's it like like kind of like the cue for him to come kill you.
00:29:09
Speaker
Yeah. Almost, like, Hellraiser-like. Yeah. ah I was thinking, if... What if, like, ah they messed up on the planning of where to plant this toy box? Like, what if they left it there, and then, like, whoever was like, oh, like, they ignored it for...
00:29:30
Speaker
days, so they have to wait to come back to see you've been played. So, but like, when the friend was just, like, sitting in a closet, just like, play that stupid jack-in-the-box! It'd be so cool!
00:29:41
Speaker
Because that's, like, a thing. It was like, they had to play the jack-in-the-box, then, like, the murders happened. Mm-hmm.
00:29:52
Speaker
Yeah, because the first two kind of had the same... Although, don't think Matt found a jack-in-the-box when he was working out in his garage. Or did he? he He saw it.
00:30:04
Speaker
Oh, there what they like there was one there. Okay, yeah. Because he was like benching, even though he seemed like he was the only one in that garage. So where... like did he like Did he just work out almost like all the way and just didn't notice it for a while?
00:30:19
Speaker
Well, the whole thing weird about that, too, is that he um was that the So there's a big like Founder's Day. It's the big holiday, I guess, for this town. It's the founding of the Cornstrip Factory. And so they have a big parade, and then Matt like rides like a unicycle and like actually sets like one the the friend of Floating Fire and then just escapes and runs away.
00:30:42
Speaker
then um the rest of the group gets arrested and thrown in jail. But then he just goes home like, I'm just going to pounce some beers and work out, I guess. It's crazy.
00:30:54
Speaker
You really shouldn't do that. You shouldn't drink and work out at the same time. But then... You also need to realize that, like, his parents probably were there, and then they just, like, are son of ours. a Because how many people you know how a tricycle?
00:31:10
Speaker
Like, how many people know how juggle while tricycling? A unicycle? Yeah. Yeah, yeah. A unicycle. Not a lot of people. So, if you notice that there's a clown unicycling...
00:31:22
Speaker
but sort of like yeah had He had like flaming like, so like flaming like sticks, right? but that's what Yeah. but It's like juggling flaming. Yeah. yeah So, like, what?
00:31:34
Speaker
And he's like the jock. That was the weirder part. He's the jock that somehow is an acrobat.
00:31:41
Speaker
Or, at least he knew enough about like, basic clowning to do the makeup, do the juggling, and then I guess like
00:31:52
Speaker
bike his way home. Yeah, cause because he wasn't he wasn't in like a friend of costume. i think He just painted his face and he was just like like hits like like bare-chested a unicycle with flaming sticks it' like throw and tosses what actually testment flow does the float.
00:32:09
Speaker
They all know it's him. like That guy had to unicycle his way to that parade like that. Yeah. What time do you think? like Is this like fall when this takes place? It seems like so, so that guy must be cold.
00:32:21
Speaker
Yeah, if it's like October in Missouri. It's like there's a tall building to break the wind or anything. Yeah.
00:32:31
Speaker
So, yeah, but there's like little silliness about it, which is different. that That to me feels like a very 80s horror movie thing. Like a scene where you want to establish like these kids are, you know...
00:32:45
Speaker
good-hearted, but just, like, terrible about, like, consequences. Like, they they kind of, like, all these, like, problems they do cause. But the float was, like, a big accident, even though they definitely, like, started it.
00:33:01
Speaker
I thought maybe, at this point in the movie, it was, like, a Friendo clone, or maybe it was, like, someone that happened to have the same build as but the teen. And it's not. like It's straight up this team. like He did this and then just said, oh, cool, I'm going to celebrate by like drinking beer and working out.
00:33:18
Speaker
Yeah, well, all my friends are right in jail.
00:33:23
Speaker
I guess he didn't they didn't rat on him. i got Yeah, I guess not.
00:33:28
Speaker
Oh, I think we've read too much that the sheriff is Will Sasso. Yeah, did not know that. I think ah i think he's like a fun addition to the movie. He's doing a crazy accent. He's doing like a crazy, like...
00:33:42
Speaker
I don't he's trying do Midwest or Southern or something, but he's to be you say he's like ah he's putting on an accent. Oh, he's doing all the horror theme accents in one. He's doing like Boss Hog or
00:33:59
Speaker
something. I think Matt's death is probably one of the best kills in the movie. Where... um A friendo shows up and, like, ah whole is, like, pushing down... it holds up the, like, the weights that Matt's trying to lift and it puts, like, hacksaw on it and then shoves it down on him.
00:34:17
Speaker
Then chops his head off and rolls right into the cooler. Yeah, yeah. I... I think that's a very fun throwback kill just because...
00:34:29
Speaker
um It's elaborate. it's It's way more like... It's... It almost seems planned to be like, if I do this, then this happens. It's not just like, stab, stab, and we'll figure it out later.
00:34:46
Speaker
But you know what? I'm surprised about this. Yeah? ah so The first kill is super quick. i'm just like, my friend Tucker like is it like gets killed in his bedroom by a friend up with a knife, but he's just like it's just like a quick like throat slit. That's it.
00:34:58
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. But... i I thought there would be this thing where it's a classic horror trope where by the end all the dead people are like stacked somewhere.
00:35:09
Speaker
And then it's like used as some sort of scary ass like epigee or like a statement where it's like you don't mess with the clown and there's just like a pile of bodies or like they get they get turned into corn syrup.
00:35:25
Speaker
Yeah. Mm-hmm. That's the secret of Bape and Quartz syrup. is It's people. It's teens. Yep. See, that would have been, like, a fun twist where it's like, why do you think we're, like, very popular? It's like, why how do you think we get our colors? How do you think we get our flavors?
00:35:40
Speaker
It's like, the blood of innocent teens. It's what like powers this town. Teen blood gives us this flavor. It's sweet flavor. Well, if you think about it, in a really messed up way, it's like teens watch their horror movies, like get a dose of like horror through slasher movies.
00:35:56
Speaker
A lot of teens get their, like, oh shit, like, the, the like, not reality, but like a a more accepted version of it through, like, movies.
00:36:09
Speaker
And so... Frendo, the company who makes like blood, should have been like, oh, we make drinks with this and then we make props with this. And it's like, why do you think it's so good? Why you think it's like so hardened with like horror? It's like, we are horror. It's like, that would have been like a fun twist, right?
00:36:27
Speaker
Like the the Hill family who is about this corn syrup factory and their industry, like they want to create more horror so then people can make more movies to then use corn syrup.
00:36:41
Speaker
And then like the the teen group is like using Baypen fake blood, but they don't realize is it's like actual blood. Yeah, see what I mean? like It's like sweet blood, because it's like, oh, like who's doing like quality control or whatever? Or it's like, there's trace amounts of... like I don't know, it's weird. I think, like okay, in or and a fake version, yeah, you can get away with it. In reality, they still, like, would FDA would come in and be like, what's in this blood? like What's in this corn syrup? And they just...
00:37:09
Speaker
do a test and they're like, nope. Nope, we're shutting this down. You are super fired.
00:37:16
Speaker
But at least then would have been like silly enough, right? Yeah.
00:37:21
Speaker
And kind of makes sense that like they didn't want the viral videos that the teens were making because like maybe it's not good or it's not to the caliber or maybe would have been funny if like they didn't use Frendo corn syrup they're using some off brand. And that was the the joke.
00:37:42
Speaker
The dad is more disappointed. It's like, you didn't use our brand. And then the, the teens are just like, it just didn't have the right color.
00:37:53
Speaker
Respect your town's history. We are horror movies. And now you're in one.
00:38:03
Speaker
Or a, in ah and a, by the end of the movie, ah somehow the movie making thing comes back as a thing to scare like the adults.
00:38:16
Speaker
Where like they dress up like Frendo now. like The teens dress like Frendo. You get to yeah kind of get that.
00:38:24
Speaker
How so? Like Quinn dresses up a Frendo costume to hide. Yeah, you're right. you're right But she doesn't hide in corn. No, no.
00:38:35
Speaker
That's the part where, like, the corn part just ah immediately when they reveal that there are multiple friendos, the corn aspect goes out the window. Well, they emerge from the corn. Yeah, but then that's it. Like, they never go back, and then there's no more corn aspect.
00:38:49
Speaker
I wanted to see a corn and ah clowns in cornfield. I want to see more corn. Well, they I mean, when they're escaping, and then, like, ah the one friend, like, Ronnie, gets, like, drilled through like a chainsaw in the middle cornfield.
00:39:02
Speaker
Yeah, but the problem of this movie is that because it's only, like, a team of five main teens, like, you can only kill so many of them. Yeah. I think they should have had more extras, or they should have had... ah Something kind of like silly where like that that part mean the party should have been like a huge like, you know, set piece like massacre or just like a friend of was like killing everybody. Well, OK, I think so here's the thing where like i still can't figure out what the intent was.
00:39:33
Speaker
I get they want to kill like the main group of teens. Yeah. But like but they killed one guy just by accident. yeah they killed like two. Oh, they killed. They killed another one. They killed another team making out on the cornfield.
00:39:46
Speaker
there' like Yeah, a girl comes out of the corner with an arrow on her back and she falls out. the ah two girls The two other girls in the group but friend group are like, oh, this is this a prank? like Ha ha ha ha ha.
00:39:57
Speaker
And then they like um they find a friend out. A severed head. A severed head, this Matt's and they're like, they made a plaster cast of his head and they're like tossing it through each other and you're like splattering each other blood.
00:40:10
Speaker
And then friend with a crossbow comes out of the field. And then like the DJ from the party is like, Oh, Hey, it's friend. Oh. And he gets like shot in the face. So they realize, oh, it's real. Well, okay.
00:40:22
Speaker
So around that time, like, was that like a target? Was that like who? We don't know which clown did that exactly, but I imagine that's just like the waitress to who at this point has served all these teens and has hated them.
00:40:36
Speaker
Yeah. Because like I we still I get like the sheriff, the mayor. The science teacher. sure science Okay, science teacher, because they prank him a lot.
00:40:49
Speaker
Yep. Their prank was so weird. that's like They put his head in buff bodies. that it Is that like super insulting to Canadians? Maybe. You know the culture? that' that's that's not like that's not of my body That's not how body looks.
00:41:07
Speaker
And mind you, it's not like it's AI generated where it looks like the right everything, like, or, like, color or tone. It's like... like they cut the cut out They cut out his head from a different picture and, like, pasted it onto, like, a bodybuilder from, ah like, a magazine or something.
00:41:21
Speaker
It's such an obvious, like, early, like, someone had a color printer kind of joke. And, like, they barely photoshopped him in, like, correctly. Like they just layered two images on top and went, ha ha ha ha. It's like, well, yeah, that's not me. If anything, he should have been like, all right, well, yeah thanks guys for thinking I got hot like that. Like anyway, back to the science lesson.
00:41:49
Speaker
But granted, this is like, I don't know how many days they've been doing this, like how many weird pranks and they just probably ran out of steam by like day five. he's while because like yeah the teacher hates it all. He gives the entire class attention, just not just like the group.
00:42:07
Speaker
Did they? I thought just the group because then they did like ah they had a breakfast club moment. Oh, maybe... we quit I think Quinn says he gave the entire class attention. Maybe she's exaggerating like the entire class. It was like the six of them or whatever. Yeah.
00:42:23
Speaker
Can you imagine and it it was the whole class, but then the six of them just, like, sat in a corner and talked as if no one was there?
00:42:31
Speaker
I've been kind of weird. i've been like, hey, assholes, we hear you.
00:42:38
Speaker
Can't believe we to stay in this tension with all these losers. so Can't believe that we're the most, like, awesome, popular people in this class. you're just like, what?
00:42:49
Speaker
Also, they don't own up to the prank.
00:42:54
Speaker
It's not like during detention, they high-five each other and went, yeah, or something. It was very like... So, was this you guys? I know it's a low-tier effort prank, but was it?
00:43:08
Speaker
i think i mean I think it definitely was. Because that's ah that's their thing, pranking other people pranking each other. Yeah, but in the same premise, when we saw it boy we so um initial watching, we thought maybe this is also Frendo?
00:43:22
Speaker
Maybe. Maybe.
00:43:25
Speaker
Hey, Frendo just barely has an understanding of digital art, so this is the best he can do.
00:43:32
Speaker
It's also weird, like because because all their pranks are also like horror-based, because they because they constantly this are like doing makeup and pretending they're killing each other. but then their pregnant teacher is like, ah you look like you you look like a bodybuilder now.
00:43:48
Speaker
Yeah, like it's off-theme. Mm-hmm. If they dropped blood on him, if they pranked him with like a horror skit... A severed arm or... what was... I'm trying to think. There was movie recently where like it was like... ah Oh, i think it was Fear Street. The Fear Street from last year.
00:44:06
Speaker
The prom night one. There was like ah like the the best friend of the of the main character. like She was like into like horror like makeup and stuff. and she basic She pulled a prank where she sawed her own arm off in class. Yeah.
00:44:18
Speaker
Oh, she like introduces herself into that one, right? Yeah. Anyway, check this out. That was in the trailer. Yep.
00:44:27
Speaker
If they did that, and then they get detention, that makes sense, right? Yeah.
00:44:33
Speaker
Or anything, they like they c chug like a gallon of corn syrup, and they throw up red. It's like, oh god, I'm sick. oh Then it's like, haha, joke, it's just the corn syrup. Yeah.
00:44:46
Speaker
Also, during this scene, during a lot of this, we we get like a little bit of the backstory between... want to say Hunter? What was name?
00:44:58
Speaker
Rust. Rust and Cole. Rust and Cole, which, don't mind the dynamic. I actually like the twist. um But does Rust go to school? like There was a thing where like we never see him go to class, and he's like the same grade as them.
00:45:13
Speaker
doesn he He walks Quinn to class on her first day. you know, he walks into, like, the door. Yeah, and he's like, well, see ya. Like, are you all supposed to be the same age? Shouldn't you all have the same classes? What's going on? How big is the school?
00:45:29
Speaker
Like, for a dying school, they have different schedules for, like, the limited amount of teens they have. Mm-hmm. I also like that like later you see like Rust like carrying like a full deer on his back.
00:45:42
Speaker
Just carrying it across like in the dark through like the streets. Yeah, for a hunter, like that's not good. and Shouldn't he have reflective material? Yeah, and how far is he walking with a deer? Because deers deers are not ah lights.
00:45:57
Speaker
So normally you'd have like a sled or like something to pull it out with. Yeah, you think for like a train hunter who's done this for a bit knows that. Or does he like the struggle?
00:46:09
Speaker
That's like his workout the day, too. It's like, I'm bench this deer and just carry home. So, see, what this movie does right for that is that it really puts you suspicion on Russ.
00:46:21
Speaker
Yeah. Mm-hmm. Which i was like, oh boy. because That's a cool trope. It's like he used to be he used to be friends with them. now Now he's not. like He tells Quinn to stay away from them.
00:46:32
Speaker
He's playing with dead animals. Yep. Because at that point, you're playing with a dead animal. You're dragging it miles.
00:46:42
Speaker
but cause yeah he But he shows up with like a shotgun and like he's kind of like like a Terminator moment. like He shows and is like, get down! And then the shoots a friend out.
00:46:52
Speaker
And then ah he kills Frendo, and they're like, oh good, you killed Frendo. And then that's when like the seven and then like other ones emerge out of the cornfield, and they're like, oh shit, and there's half a dozen Frendos.
00:47:09
Speaker
Well, like that had been fun of like, you still don't know if he was part of that cult, because it's like, you don't know who's in the cult yet of Frendo's. Yeah.
00:47:18
Speaker
For all I know, it's a mixed bag. It's like, okay, we have like, the older generation of friendos, the they're they're like kids or like, like you know, because teens who hate the main group, the other teens. Yeah. ah Because i feel like because it's a generational thing in this town of friendo killings, like you to pass the mantle down.
00:47:40
Speaker
So. Right. is is It's like. That's a weird secret for um for them all to keep.
00:47:49
Speaker
It's a hard secret.
00:47:57
Speaker
I will say, the um I think the most Eli Craig thing i think of this movie, though, I think it's when you, like, um the friendos start bringing people to, like, Quinn's dad like, the doctor office because they they're cause they're getting, like, horrifically injured.
00:48:11
Speaker
So, it's like the killers, set like you're seeing, like, the killers, like, have to get, like, ah patched up and, like, like like first date have performed on them, which, like, you'd never see. no no, I did appreciate that because it's definitely, like,
00:48:25
Speaker
they Someone had that as a ah like reason for the dad character. you know so like I think the original author probably like wrote like a what-if funny situation of like these killers that need like a patch job.
00:48:38
Speaker
Yeah, cause because they're they're like completely normal people. They're not they're not superal're not a supernatural serial killer. They're not like a demon. They're just small-town serial people. And then, super funny to think that like they don't have training.
00:48:55
Speaker
Nope. Like, one of them is... The sheriff. Like, a sheriff. well he He doesn't also have a gun, so he has to fight out manually. And then... ah Like, the liquor store, like, grocery shop owner.
00:49:12
Speaker
how How is he, like... Yeah, so i work, like, a long shift during the day, and then at night I dress up like a clown and run around. wield, like, a I don't know what weapon he has, but... yeah A weapon. Yeah.
00:49:24
Speaker
Yeah. It would be funny if their weapons were themed after what they did. like Like he had like a broken bottle or something? you know like sorry Yeah, like a broom full of glass.
00:49:37
Speaker
Like, uh, Shruti from the uh, uh, diner has like ah a pot, like ah like a so iron pot, a pad or something. Yeah, yeah
00:49:49
Speaker
yeah. Not saying it has to be that, but it would be funny if like that was sort of Their clown clo version of a weapon. would have liked... I mean, when they're not really they're not clowns. wouldn't make sense. But would have been fun if there was more clown-based kills. Yeah, they didn't really have like a lot of fun clown-themed kills. It was more just conventional weaponry. But when you realize the whole like meta thing and then ah cult the killing cult
00:50:21
Speaker
killing col You understand why, because they have to be practical, because they're just, like, the townspeople.
00:50:30
Speaker
Like, that not full, like, killer class outer space, but just, like, you know, maybe make out a balloon animal to cause a distraction or something, or have, like, a pie, but the pie is like has, like, something, like, acid in it or something.
00:50:44
Speaker
Yeah, but that requires, like, someone on that group to figure out that weaponry.
00:50:51
Speaker
Also... ah Now that you mention it, it's like... It's like, did they even have to dress like the clown at some points? Right? Because they could just sneak up on these key teens. It's not like the clown was like a big thing. And they they're going like full they're yeah they're wearing like giant shoes, too. it' like They're not stealthy. They can't run. That's what I'm saying. like They could have just been the regular people and then just been like ninjas or something.
00:51:19
Speaker
Or just just wear, like, Frendo masks. Just wear, like, the mask of Frendo, not, like, the full costume. Okay, so that's what I'm saying. Like, they they all had to... find ah The Cornset Factory, they do show that there is a, like, costume department.
00:51:34
Speaker
Oh my god, they have so many costumes. i don't know who, like, if they just had, like... ah i could see them having, like, one costume. They had, like, 20 costumes. Yeah.
00:51:45
Speaker
Like, for every shape and size, and then... yeah Like, I feel like there was one that was, like, designed for other, like, usages. It wasn't just the standard clown onesie thing. It was, like, I gotta look back.
00:51:59
Speaker
But I felt like it was, like, very extensive for your clown needs for this town. was trying to figure out, there's the one guy, because they they get to, like, they're running through the cornfield after the party. And they're, like, oh, there's a na there's a house...
00:52:13
Speaker
um like, couple miles away that that has a phone, landline. We can, like, get there and call the police or whatever. um And they find a friendo in there who looks like he's dead. Like, his face is, like, rotting. But then I guess it's just, like, like that friendo, that guy, like, just customized his friendo mask to make it look like he was dead.
00:52:30
Speaker
and the chance that that would happen? Yeah, he's just, like, sitting in his chair in his house just waiting for something to bust Okay, because then it was, like, was that the guy's owner's house, or did they...
00:52:43
Speaker
I'm not sure if he's the guy that owned the house, but yeah, it was just like there's like a... It's like, oh, this friend is already dead. There's this a dead guy on the couch, and then they go upstairs, to come back down, and he's like, oh, he's gone and then he's like the he's the pitchfork friendo. He kills like the other like the last remaining friend with like ah a pitchfork.
00:53:02
Speaker
And then Quinn pulls it out, and then kills him with the but the pitchfork. And then there's a great beat where the friendo falls down next to what's her name? um
00:53:16
Speaker
Janet, I think, is last friend. And then Janet's like, I hate you, Quinn. And then the friend was like, I hate you too, Quinn.
00:53:24
Speaker
Great line. Just like, that was the Tucker vs. Dale. Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, like, bit. Yep.
00:53:33
Speaker
Uh... What else can we talk about? Well, there's i mean i it's there's the finale. So it's like, Quinn gets like captured and then taken to like the the cornstarch factory and then you get the the bigger feel of kevin duran is like leading is like yeah he's leading all the adults and they've done this before like which i think i think he mentions like yeah that that's the explanation for like the 1991 killing it was like that group of teens was also rowdy so that like whoever was like but running things then killed that group and it's happened in like previous previous decades they killed like hippies in the 60s
00:54:11
Speaker
like eight times to eight times the group that like like It's like, like, sawing the name of the town, or, like, causing issues in the town, they kill them. Which does make sense in a, like, dumb way, but when you think, again, when Mai keep bringing up the economy in that town, it's like, how is this town still, like, around?
00:54:30
Speaker
Well, we said, it's it's like Hot Fuzz, but like the thing about Hot Fuzz is that is that town was like very like prestigious. And remote. it was like winning were It was winning a awards for best, but like, quaintest town in in like the UK, stuff like that. So they were like maintaining like the image of this other of their town. and This is just like, yeah, this is like a ah run-down small town that's dying.
00:54:49
Speaker
I don't know what they're trying to keep going. Yeah, it's like, I don't understand the like the cult mentality of like protect this town. I get like, the dad, ah Kevin Durant, was like, he didn't like his son for his his preferences in life, and like his yeah son definitely like not wanting to be like inheriting the corn syrup factory.
00:55:13
Speaker
Even though it definitely makes sense that like he's making cool movies about your corn syrup.
00:55:21
Speaker
And then, like, what, Will Sasso is just like a henchman. yeah He was just like, I hate teens. This is great. like get the I get to kill teens.
00:55:33
Speaker
so they're going yeah I got to figure out... I got i kind of want to get my hands on the book to read if like it's more expansive than that. If they mention more. I mean, they probably into it little bit more just because you have more... You have however many pages to... 300 pages to go through. Watch the Clown on the Cornerfield book. It's like 150 pages. It's just like...
00:55:56
Speaker
like I think I just by quick I just I just it's 352 pages it's it's it's pretty bulky it's a pretty good like book it's not like it's like a novella or anything
00:56:10
Speaker
but they're gonna but yeah they're gonna make it look like uh like Quinn Quinn and Cole we were like in murder suicide um But then Quinn's dad smashes through the like the wall with his car because he... I loved his scene how he got away. like He fakes the one friend that's on like the the operating table. like Looks like he's having a heart attack and then like stabs the other friend down the neck.
00:56:32
Speaker
And then after he does it, he's like, hey, leave it in. I'll patch you up. Go sit out there. We're cool. I'm a doctor. And then he pulls it out anyway. like, I told you not to pull it out.
00:56:44
Speaker
but like Now look, you're bleeding everywhere. All right. that friend of dice we never get the reveals who those two were no i don't i don't mind that but i think it'd been funny if like that was like the animal control guy and maybe the that was like people they met at like other places yes there's not there's not that many people left to like reveal like when they whenever pulls their masks off it's like it's like every character adult character you've seen in the movie yeah besides quid's dad
00:57:21
Speaker
Or would have been fun if he was in on it too. That would have been dark twist. Uh, yeah. That's why he bought the house sight unseen. It's like, I just wanted to get my frustration out.
00:57:35
Speaker
And I wanted to make sure no teens were addicted to corn syrup or or whatever. so how would Kevin Durant contact this like Philadelphia doctor though? He'd be like, bring your bring your teen daughter to our town and we'll murder them all.
00:57:47
Speaker
Maybe he didn't know about the murder. It could have been a thing where ah dad was looking for like grief, and Kevin Durant offered him like some sort of like kind of like release, where it's like, hey, like I need a doctor on staff for my murder group.
00:58:04
Speaker
And it's like, I'll pay you in corn or whatever. I'll pay you in corn. He got that insurance money. Uh... And then, like, the deal gets weirder and weirder, and that's when the the dad has enough, and he's like, I thought we were doing something else, and it's like, nah, this was the goal.
00:58:22
Speaker
was to kill the teens in town. So all the corn's for us, or whatever. Like, the children the corn, there's like, we worship the corn. It would have been funny if that was, like, another twist, where it's like, oh, Kevin Durant is like, Arthur Hill is more insane than just, like,
00:58:41
Speaker
his corn empire. It's like, he believes in like the corn and the clown and the mythos of friendo, you know, it's like, that would have been scarier where it's like, Oh, cause we still don't know like what, why he does this mostly, or like where he goes.
00:58:56
Speaker
He just sort of leaves the movie. He, yeah he, he escapes like the chaos of, uh, Quinn's dad driving through the ah factory. And then like everyone else gets like, uh, or most of us, like one guy gets like his head, the question, like a cement block. And then the waitress gets like a pipe smashed to her chest.
00:59:12
Speaker
And I think this one, like, Quinn quin escapes and, like, ah finds, like, the Frendo room and dresses up as Frendo. And then, ah but I would say the but second best kill is, like, Will Sassos comes in and, like, looking for her. And then, like, um she pops up behind him and takes his, like, kettle prod he has and, like, jams it through his to his mouth and, like, kettle prods it from the inside.
00:59:35
Speaker
Pretty cool, like, kill. Yeah. Yeah.
00:59:43
Speaker
And then they all and they all and they all get away. um well there but I guess um the science teacher, Mr. Vern, I guess, is the chainsaw ah friendo because he's the last one left. And then they run him over. with and and like but it's like the It's like the friendo, bait like the corn syrup mascot like bug. It's like a Volkswagen Beetle.
01:00:02
Speaker
Also, like that guy explodes. Yes. And that car, I don't know how fast that like company car can go, but It couldn't even go that fast. It wasn't, like, that far between them and him.
01:00:14
Speaker
And then, like, Beatletless accelerated that fast, that I'll think. No, it doesn't have, like, zero to 60 capabilities. Yeah. But it is pretty funny that, like, that was the grand finale kill.
01:00:27
Speaker
Because, like, Kevin Durant just sort of leaves the movie. And we never get any kind of, like, closure. It's sort of, that's how it ends. Mm-hmm. Or at least the killings and stuff.
01:00:40
Speaker
It's just sort of like... Like, sometime later. We're like, what? But Quint knows she's learned how to drive stick. That's like her but big thing. there was like like She almost gets killed because she could drive stick earlier in the movie and then now she can. and
01:00:56
Speaker
and she And she's leaving to go to college and everyone's staying behind.
01:01:02
Speaker
But then she finds a friendo jack-in-the-box in her car.
01:01:10
Speaker
But she doesn't care. She's like, whatever, I'm leaving this town. All the friendo killings only make sense in the town, because it's like, they just want the kids to die in the town. But I guess if you leave, it's not like it follows. It's not like, okay, well, you've been marked by the clown.
01:01:28
Speaker
And I guess every other adult town was wasn't in on it. was It was just just like this small group was secretly doing this. Which is, like, the awkward conversation that they just didn't want to show you of, like, them trying to explain to the town, like, hey, there's a killer cult of clown murderers? Like, what?
01:01:48
Speaker
so it's like, yeah, the sheriff, the mayor, like the guy runs the liquor store, Trudy from the diner, yeah, they they were all, like, cult killers that were, like, they killed, like, half the teenagers in town.
01:01:59
Speaker
Like, they killed half your kids.
01:02:03
Speaker
like It doesn't seem like they're outraged. For no reason. Yeah.
01:02:11
Speaker
I guess maybe, uh, there's like a, I think there's two sequels to the book. Um, so maybe, maybe if it's a sequel this movie, we'll get more, Kevin Durant will show back up. Yeah, hope so.
01:02:22
Speaker
Uh, I mean, I gotta, I gotta read the second book. And there's a third book coming out called Church of, uh, Church of Frendo. I think, I think that last year. they came out last year. It was 2024 was when that came out. So I think they're all, I think all three are out right now.
01:02:35
Speaker
Oh, really? Yep.
01:02:39
Speaker
Uh, but, Yeah, I mean, I like the concept. I like that it's, like, with the direction they're going for, they definitely went meta in the, like, the, like, mantle of they established a killer, and then now it's, like, anyone can be friendo.
01:02:59
Speaker
I mean, just finding the costume, that's, like, sort of, and I guess not even the costume, just, like, get the basic clown makeup. Mm-hmm. It would have been a little bit unique if they were able to find like something to do with some unique thing about the clown.
01:03:19
Speaker
I'm not saying it's too generic, but they could incorporate it like corn or or like the blood. Like the corn syrup in the effects.
01:03:31
Speaker
So it's like it's a very iconic clown look. At least right now. like I know this movie just came out. But I don't think if you showed me a clown lineup, I could spot Frendo so easily. You know what mean? Like, the It clown is pretty iconic.
01:03:48
Speaker
And you got any of art? Yeah. So I'm just like, I kind of want a little bit more distinction, but I'm fine with what I got.
01:03:59
Speaker
I just feel like if they wanted to take it to the next level, they could have designed the clown with like a little bit more flair with the some of the look.
01:04:12
Speaker
Also, for the little Art the Clown thing, that's mostly a mask. So that's why it's like anyone can be Art the Clown.
01:04:21
Speaker
But Frendo's also the same thing, where it's like you gotta wear this makeup mask and then you gotta be able to run with like army equipment. like a Giant clown shoes. Mm-hmm.
01:04:34
Speaker
ah But, yeah, i I enjoyed this. This was, like, perfect mood to watch this. I think i when it going in on it, not knowing the overall story or even remembering the trailer, I was like, hell yeah.
01:04:52
Speaker
This what I wanted. Out of, like, a slasher movie. Yeah, this is a perfect, like, fun... Like, if if you're looking for something to watch for Halloween this year, like, you just want, like, a fun slasher movie...
01:05:04
Speaker
ah definitely check this out. Especially she so she have if you have Shudder or AMC+. plus like it's It's been there for a while. You just stream it there.
01:05:14
Speaker
Yeah, it's definitely like you have to turn your brain off just a little bit. I don't feel like... I mean, we're critiquing this after like seeing other horror things like in a marathon or Even just being a big movie buff.
01:05:29
Speaker
I think like anyone could just sort of appreciate the premise. And then if they haven't seen a lot of meta horror movies, they might get surprised. Yeah, like like I think the movies movies it's taking ideas from are better. Hot Fuzz is obviously much smarter or better than this one. And then I think it's it's very similar to Thanksgiving, too.
01:05:52
Speaker
Did I think dike call it when we watching it? i was like, this has got Thanksgiving vibes, especially when they were doing Founder's Day, where it's like, it's legally distinct Thanksgiving to the town. Yeah, and then, like, who who the killers turns out to be compared to, like, Thanksgiving...
01:06:11
Speaker
you got the carver but yeah i think i thanksgiving kelly i think the kills in that were like way crazier just because cly Roth like it's sort like leaning even more into like the grindhouse craziness yeah yeah i think that's what this movie's missing a little bit more of is grindhouse killing it's got more like modern slasher vibes where it's just like hey these all look like weird saw traps if there's if there's more kills like matt's where it's like you know the hacksaw on the barbells then if they're all them were kind of that level, I think it would like, just the next tier up.
01:06:44
Speaker
Yeah, agree.
01:06:48
Speaker
ah Any last thoughts? Nope, yeah, go if youre scenic and you ah if you seen and thing, you still want see it, definitely check it out on Shudder, or if grab that Blueberry or 4K that just came out this week.
01:07:05
Speaker
And speaking of 4Ks, we're sticking to that next week. We're talking about Krull, the 80s classic, which is getting a brand new, I think for the first time ever, 4K. ah So you'll be able watch Krull in all of its 4K glory. Talking about the Glaive, one the greatest weapons in movie history.
01:07:23
