Mental Health Month is Coming Update

Welcome back to the Goblin Lore Podcast... kind of. We do not have a full new episode for you all this week but we do have a brief update from Alex. On top of updating you all on Mental Health Awareness Month and the plans we are finalizing Alex also took this opportunity to reiterate something the cast wants very clear: Trans Rights are Human Rights. In the face of increasing legislation aimed at attacking the rights of a vulnerable population the cast wanted to ensure that our position was and remains abundantly clear. See you all next week with a longer episode.

We also are proud to have partnered with Grinding Coffee Co a black, LGBT+ affiliated and owned, coffee business that is aimed at providing coffee to gamers. You can read more about their mission here. You can use our partner code for discounted coffee!

This episode is sponsored by Zencastr. They provide a crystal clear sound and allows for recording separate audio and video tracks for the guests and the hosts. Plus, there is a secured cloud backup, so you never lose your interviews. It is super easy to use, and there is nothing to download. My guests just click on the link, and we start recording. Click here to get 30% off your first three months with a PRO account.

On another new note we continue our partnership with The Fireside Alliance. From their main page: "An independent media network and a progressive community of progressive communities". Please check them out!

Again we would like to state that Black Lives Matter (with a link to where you can offer support both monetary and not).

As promised, we plan to keep these Mental Health Links available moving forward too. For general Mental Health the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has great resources for people struggling with mental health concerns as well as their families. We also want to draw attention to this article on stigma from NAMI's site.

If you’re thinking about suicide or just need someone to talk to right now, you can get support from any of the resources below.

Introduction & Host Updates

00:00:30
Speaker
Hello Podwalkers, and unfortunately I can't welcome you to a new episode of the Goblin Lore podcast because that's not what this is. Today I'm here by myself because the episode for this week was delayed and I had a few other topics to touch on so I thought this is probably the best way to kind of get it all out to y'all was just to do a quick recording by myself and hit on all of this.
00:00:56
Speaker
I might as well introduce myself. I'm Alex Newman, found again on Twitter at Mel underscore chronicler. I was taking a break from Twitter for quite a while. I'm back out there though. I've got a much larger mute list right now. I'm trying to muted word list. I'm trying to filter some things for now, but I'm on Twitter and my pronouns are he him.

Sponsor Shoutout & Podcast Tools

00:01:18
Speaker
And just before we dig into stuff, I do want to give a quick shout out to a couple of our sponsors that have been really great about supporting us. The Granny Coffee Company has been sponsoring us for a while now. They're a minority and LGBTQ owned and run coffee company that has been sponsoring gamers. We are very thankful to be among those that they are supporting. Not much of a coffee person myself, but Hobbs is, excuse me,
00:01:47
Speaker
Sorry, I was hoping that wouldn't be an issue, but you might have a couple moments of silence for me because I'm getting over my allergies waking back up with the spring here in Minnesota right now. On the tail end, fortunately, but it's been about a week of congestion and coughing and stuff. And so may have a little bit more of that as we go.
00:02:09
Speaker
Try to make this quick. So anyway, Granny Coffee Company is great. I'm not a big coffee person myself, but Hobbs is. And honestly, I love getting random messages from Hobbs and updates about whatever new thing he's doing. He's ice cream or cold press or nitro extreme or whatever some coffee thing that he's been doing and experimenting with these
00:02:31
Speaker
actually wonderful sounding flavors and things that the Granting Coffee Company has been putting together. So that's been great. They've been really supportive of us. They've supported the donated charity work we're doing. They've just been a wonderful sponsor and we really appreciate all the support they've given us.
00:02:50
Speaker
And then Zencaster, I also wanted to shout out. Zencaster is the program that we used to record the very show, the very thing I'm talking on right now. I recorded this on Zencaster a couple of years ago when Joe decided to leave because he was kind of done with the game and so he left the cast. Hobbs and I kept going, but it was starting to become editing and recording was starting to become an issue for us.
00:03:19
Speaker
Hobbs took on the job, but it just took a lot of time and was tough. So he runs Ncaster, decided to try out Ncaster Pro, and it saved him so much time. And I haven't done the editing myself, so I'm not going to know all the tools and things. I'm not going to try to pretend to make stuff up for that one. But I do know at auto levels, which is great when we have multiple people, especially when we bring in guests,
00:03:42
Speaker
Hubs and myself, we record often enough. I think things are probably a little closer, but when we bring in guests, it's nice to have that ability to auto level everyone together. It takes out extra silence. I know the service records each person on their own line.
00:03:57
Speaker
Which has been great for us because we actually had an issue before recording a few episodes where people would drop out for a few sentences or a few words here and there. But because we were only recording on one side, we would lose that.
00:04:13
Speaker
It can make it a little awkward to record with somebody who's doing that, but with Zencaster, which A, we haven't even really had that pop up too much with Zencaster. It was a lot more prevalent in previous things, but even if a word or two gets dropped, because it gets recorded on their site, it gets uploaded, everything's there. The whole thing, that whole conversation is there and it's great. We love their service and are very thankful that they are sponsoring us now as well. It's a pretty recent thing and it's been great.
00:04:43
Speaker
Anyway, so I got that out of the way.

Trans Rights Advocacy

00:04:48
Speaker
I do have one more thing that I need to say before I can get into the actual cast business. I need to say something brief about the legislation in the US right now, particularly Texas and Florida that is targeting trans folk, specifically trans kids. This stuff is important.
00:05:09
Speaker
We've said on our show and we've said on our Twitter page, we've said before, trans rights are human rights. But, you know, we also say on the show a lot that it's, something's important. Repetition is important for it as well. So let me be very clear. Trans rights are human rights and trying to outlaw trans folk is vile.
00:05:34
Speaker
This is something I'm still really frustrated about, and I know there are a lot of folks dealing with a lot more stress than I am around these issues right now. I'm still working out what I'm going to be doing to try and help, but when I realized that we needed to push back this week's episode and that I was probably going to record a quick something here, I realized that
00:05:58
Speaker
This is a small first step that I could take as someone who has a bit of a platform to just come out and say, once again, emphatically, this stuff is vile. So before I run out of words, that won't get us a mature rating on this episode.
00:06:17
Speaker
I'm going to set that topic aside for now and get to our show related stuff that I want to cover real quick for everybody.

Episode Delay Explanation

00:06:26
Speaker
So as I've said a couple of times, this episode that would have gone up this week got pushed back. There was a bit of a technical issue. I believe Hobbs has a handle on it now, but it's just been a busy week and he kind of just ran out of time to get it posted. So we decided to probably just be best to push it to next week and that'll be fine.
00:06:48
Speaker
The recording for that episode did go pretty long. We had a great guest. It was a wonderful chat. I'm really happy with that episode. I'm so excited to get it out. But our original plan, because it was a longer one, as we tend to do, was going to be to cut it in half for this week and then the other half for next week.
00:07:06
Speaker
And then we go into full MTG mental health mode with May the week after that But with this delay we're gonna have to change that I think right now the plan is To just get this whole episode edited and posted and just post one big chunky episode next week So that may change but I think that's what's gonna happen is you'll get a nice I want to say hour and a half ish
00:07:31
Speaker
hour, 40 minutes. I can't remember exactly how long we recorded and what it's going to chop down to, but you're probably looking at something in that neighborhood for an episode from us next week, which is a little bigger than we usually do. I think it was a great conversation and I hope you all will enjoy it as well.

Mental Health Focus in May

00:07:47
Speaker
So speaking of May, we're almost here has said, you know, next week we have that and then the week after is May all of a sudden. And May is National Mental Health Awareness Month. I think that's a US thing, but as we're based in the US, that's that's what we go with. This year, just like the last couple of years, we're going to do mental health focus for the month. So every episode that we post in the month of May will be mental health related in some way.
00:08:15
Speaker
We're working on getting that stuff going. I know we're going to be recording an episode this week with a guest who I still can't believe has never been on our show before. He's a good friend of ours in the Minneapolis group, and I'm looking forward to it. We'll be recording with him shortly. That'll go up at some point in May. That might be our first episode. I don't know. Time travel is weird when you're a podcaster. It's strange.
00:08:39
Speaker
But yeah, we're getting ready for that. I'm really looking forward to that.

Upcoming Charity Events

00:08:44
Speaker
And then also want to make sure we mentioned that Goblin Lore is going to be part of a big charity event in May as well to raise money for NAMI, which is the National Alliance of Mental Illness. It's an organization that we've done charity stuff for before. They're a great organization, a great resource.
00:09:08
Speaker
for mental health things, mental illness stuff. They have local groups all around in the 50 states, all around the US. They have a big national group. There's a lot of good resources online. I know there's going to be a number of other content creators a part of this. So this is going to happen on Saturday and Sunday, May 14th and 15th. I don't know what this schedule is and I don't know who else is there. I think some of that stuff is still being worked out at this point.
00:09:32
Speaker
But just so everyone is aware, like that will be happening. Hobbs will be talking about it. GoblinLore, Twitter will be talking about it. Other content creators will be talking about it. As we get closer, we have more details. We'll make sure that everyone is aware of what's going on, who's going to be there. There's going to be a schedule. It'll all be worked out. It's not quite ready and I don't have it in front of me, whatever. There's probably more details out there than I even
00:09:58
Speaker
Anyway, so that's happening. Excited about that. That'll be great. But in addition to that charity event in May, Goblin Lore is also going to be doing a charity event in June. This one we don't have a date for or any other details than that.
00:10:14
Speaker
Though this charity will this event will be to benefit Trans Lifelines that's where the money will be going for for this event in June I know how I think Hobbs is still setting that up with with some other people. I think it'll be a stream I don't know if there's more involved with that But that was gonna be a lot of fun that will be really cool and just wanted to make sure Everyone's aware that that's coming up in June as well at some point and and once again as we get closer to the dates
00:10:42
Speaker
and more details become available. We'll make sure that those are all passed on. And then just one more small thing to add before I close this out.

Guest Appearances & Community Support

00:10:52
Speaker
I personally am going to be guesting on a podcast that's outside of the Magic Content Sphere.
00:10:57
Speaker
In the next couple of weeks, we'll be recording and that will be posted. I'm not sure when, but once we've got that recorded and I talk to the person I'm going to be going, who's show I'm going to be going on to, I'll make sure word kind of gets passed about that. But something you can actually go listen to now, if you haven't already, would be the episode, Hobbes guested on an episode of Casual Magic with Sheevam a couple of weeks ago. It was posted in April and I can't remember exactly when.
00:11:27
Speaker
It was a great episode about magic and mental health and the two of them go on this great sort of conversational journey and in the hours, so they talked. It was a fantastic episode and I really enjoyed it. I suspect if you're listening to our show and you haven't listened to Siva schedule magic show, you'll enjoy the show in general. But also here's an episode you can listen to that Hobbs is on and there's a mental health focus, which is a thing that we tend to talk about. So you should go check that out if you're looking for something else to listen to.
00:11:57
Speaker
And to actually then end this, I just want to thank our wonderful community. I'm constantly blown away by how supportive our community of listeners are, how supportive the community on our cast's Discord is. I mean, seriously, Magic the Game is quite a bit of fun, and I do enjoy it. It's a hobby I've had for a long time, but I've got a lot of hobbies. I can spend my time on it, and some that I do spend a lot of time on. But what's really kept me engaged and involved
00:12:26
Speaker
with magic for as long as I have is the wonderful communities that I found here. So I want to thank all of you and just remind you that goblins, like snowflakes, are only dangerous in numbers. And remember that trans rights are human rights.
