Global Sports Podcast Network
pod on GSPN Daily. Michael's with me. Dude, how are you?
00:00:15
Michael
Yeah, all good, mate. Thank you very much. How about you?
00:00:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I'm good. I love the accent. How's things your end?
00:00:21
Michael
Yeah, all very good. I mean, it's been one of those very dark days um at this time but you know we get through we'll be the shining light and everyone's coming back from work listening to this.
00:00:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%, exactly. And they'll ah hopefully listen to it on the way to the game at the weekend. And hopefully, if they listen back to it on the way back from the game, hopefully it'll be relatively accurate as well. Do you know what I mean?
00:00:41
Michael
Well hopefully but we're not going to agree on the score line so one was gonna be wrong
00:00:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, you never know. We might, Dave. Depends on the seasons. Right, let's talk Newcastle. It's been the it's been a bit of an up and down
Newcastle's Rollercoaster Season
00:00:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
season, to be fair. Started off at Bournemouth and Southampton. Same games as we did.
00:00:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Same results.
00:00:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I thought, I mean, obviously we've gone on to have quite a good season, so it's kind of worked out all right for you in the end but at first I was like I think Newcastle can do better than that and then obviously played you in the cup kind of put our B team out and and you really struggled apart from the first 60 seconds where you scored straight away and it kind of set the tone for the first 10 games and I kind of expected Newcastle to be one of the top four or five teams this season I'm ah sure you did as well well.
00:01:06
Michael
the scoreline, so one of us is going to be wrong. Yeah. Yeah.
00:01:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
What was the issue for the first part of the season?
00:01:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, it looks like you're starting to come better recently, but, you know, is it is there a change in fortunes, do you think?
00:01:31
Michael
think it's one of those that because of last season newcastle had a horrible injury record We're missing out on Europe this year, which is the aim every single year at this point. I know it sounds odd for a club that was battling relegation a few seasons ago, but that's sort of the way it is now.
00:01:47
Michael
Yeah, 100%. That's our expectations. After missing out last year, we sort of have changed the way we played. Southampton, Bournemouth, everyone will agree, not good enough, but we knew exactly what to expect.
00:01:58
Michael
um You know, going into the season, it's going to be a tough season. We're going to not play with that same intensity. And then because things haven't worked, it was the Chelsea Cup game where we've turned around and gone, let's just play how we played a couple of seasons ago.
00:02:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:02:13
Michael
Let's go back to that and let's refine that intensity and let's press teams. And to be honest, against Chelsea, it worked fantastically. We didn't ridiculously press against Arsenal, but we pressed them where we needed to.
00:02:25
Michael
Caused a lot of mistakes and obviously ended up winning the game, keeping a clean sheet.
00:02:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
you.
00:02:29
Michael
So to be honest, signs are there that things have been proven. But at the start of the season, it hasn't been great for Newcastle.
00:02:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
How's your waveform at
00:02:39
Michael
To be honest, it's not bad. For Newcastle United, it's as you would expect if you're a Newcastle supporter. We're not great away from home, but when you look at how we've been in previous seasons, it's about on par.
00:02:53
Michael
We've got, I think, one win, a couple of draws, and obviously a couple of defeats in there as well. But it wouldn't be a season without a few go-away performances.
00:03:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
the moment. Well, this is it. I mean, we had a quite a big big win at we the weekend against West Ham.
00:03:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And, you know, we've been informed recently. We're looking good. We seem to start games strong. And I think the issue to the start of the season was we started games really strong and couldn't score. but we just We had like 20 shots but couldn't score.
00:03:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Whereas now we've started putting them away.
00:03:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
What's Newcastle's biggest weakness, do you think, for the
The Crucial First Goal: A Game-Changer?
00:03:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
first half? Do you think, you know, if if teams score first is that a problem for you
00:03:28
Michael
yeah hundred percent um one of the stats i've just mentioned on one of the newcastle podcasts is when we've gone ahead this season we've not dropped any points But another one I've dropped is that that was our first goal, the Alexander-Erzak header against Arsenal, in the first 32 minutes of a game this season.
00:03:46
Michael
So 10 games had gone and we hadn't scored in the first 30 minutes.
00:03:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
wow
00:03:50
Michael
Only Manchester United had done worse. And you know what? you can Well, we all know what they've just done with Eric Tenhaaf. So, you know, it clearly wasn't good enough. But obviously, the Willett goal against...
00:03:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
well you squad in the first minute against us in the Cup, so it might be a change in tide for newcastle
00:04:01
Michael
Yeah. I was just about to say, you're the only opponent we've actually scored relatively early against. um So it's one of those where if we start slowly, then you may find that you could be 2-0 up in the first 15 minutes.
00:04:17
Michael
But I think if we start strong, it's the it's the old cliche, isn't it whoever gets the first goal the you know the first goal wins first goal really matters etc and it's going to be like that on the weekend I think yeah
00:04:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
be a change in time for Newcastle. Hmm.
00:04:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, well, I feel like for Forest, we've gone through a really bad phase of scoring first and then conceding within literally like minutes, like two, three minutes. But obviously the last two or three games, we did concede an equaliser against Leicester relatively equally, but there's been a few games recently.
00:04:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palace we held on, West Ham we went on to win 3-0, looked good.
00:04:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
So hopefully we can continue that if we do score first. But the one one interesting thing obviously we want to talk about
Midfield Depth and Key Players
00:04:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
is Elliot Anderson. He's come to Forrest from Newcastle, PSR, that whole debacle at the start of the season.
00:05:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's also about your ah balance of midfield because one of the things that worries me about Newcastle is you know you've got such good players, Tonali, Gimoresh in there, you've got you know Willock, Longstaff, Joel Inton, but then beyond that, you know you've got Miley maybe, but there's not really anyone else.
00:05:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
like Have you got the balance of midfield right? it the Is the depth deep enough do you think
00:05:21
Michael
Yeah, I think the depth is deep enough. I think Guimara and Tornali are guilty of being a little bit too similar. Same with Joe Linton and Joe Willock, but that's two of your positions in that midfield three.
00:05:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:05:33
Michael
ah You know, pretty much nailed down. Sean Longstaff has played the role last season of getting a little bit further forward um and trying to get those goals. I mean, Longstaff scoring eight goals last season was, you know, I don't think anyone would have predicted that.
00:05:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
depth deep enough, do you think? Yeah. Well,
00:05:46
Michael
um And against Arsenal, we saw Joe Willick do that and effectively be a second striker, which is exactly the same as what it was two seasons ago when we finished fourth. So I think in regards to a ah mix and finding the right dynamic, we're getting there now.
00:06:01
Michael
We're starting to understand it, but it's only been a couple of games that we've started to see it this season. If we play Bruno, Joe Linton and Tonali in that midfield three, there is a chance that we do struggle just because of the similarities there.
00:06:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah.
00:06:15
Michael
But I think if we go with how we went against Arsenal, I think we will start really strong.
00:06:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, good dude to be fair, because you know, Longstaff is a bit like Ryan. Yeah. it's for he's He's a runner, isn't he? He's an engine room. He really cares about the club.
00:06:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's thrown through. Academy boy. You know, you've got some good players. Sven Botman injured at the minute. Big miss.
Defensive Challenges and Strategies
00:06:35
Michael
I know we've got but alongside Forrest, to be fair, one of the best defensive records in the league this season, but ah we've completely changed the way we've played because Sven Botman's out.
00:06:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:46
Michael
This is the reason we call him our Rolls-Royce defender and that's just because when he's playing, we are so much better. We don't have to focus on defence, we don't have to worry about pacing behind, Dan Byrne, Fabian Scherr, which tends to get us more often than not, um but we actually can then focus on, right, midfield build-up, get the wingers involved, get your full-backs overlapping.
00:07:09
Michael
You don't have to worry about a 2v3 counter-attack. But Sven Bortmann, when he comes back, I think you'll see a different newcasts night
00:07:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you miss Dan Burnett left back? I mean, Lewis Hall's been playing well, but do you miss that power that he brings?
00:07:23
Michael
so i actually think you miss the predictability from teams. So there are certain teams that won't play out from the back. If they're going to hoof it forward, if you've got your left back at six foot seven or whatever Dan Byrne is, it's not going on the left side.
00:07:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's massive. He should never be a leftback should he
00:07:39
Michael
No. But that's one of the benefits of also when we had Bottman in centre-back and Byrne was there. So if Byrne went forward, you had Bottman there, just able to clear everything up.
00:07:51
Michael
Now, if you put Dan Byrne at left-back, maybe um Kelly would play there instead, or maybe Emile Kraft.
00:07:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:07:59
Michael
But it was Jamal Lascelles, who unfortunately runs like he's carrying a double-decker bus on his back at times.
00:08:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
left back, should he?
00:08:06
Michael
um We love him. Yeah, him and Cardalo, double deal pretty much at the same time. Love them both, but they've sort of you know outlived their time here.
00:08:17
Michael
I mean, Darlo's moved on, obviously, but Jamal, currently
00:08:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
Right-Wing Dilemmas and Transfer Talks
00:08:21
Michael
actually our captain.
00:08:22
Michael
Great atmosphere, great guy to have around, but just not really the level of Newcastle right now.
00:08:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
you bought him. He was from our academy. Yeah. Yeah, fair. The final one of what to touch on, you know, we mentioned it a bit before the podcast, right wing, you've got Almiron who, you know, he's had a few seasons of unbelievable quality and Jacob Murphy as well, who seems to be kind of like Mr. Reliable almost in sorts, but neither them really set in the world a lot and you know I looked at the lineup a few weeks ago and it was I think it was Murphy Isaac and somebody else on the left it wasn't Barnes or Gordon and I was like that just it doesn't strike me as a Newcastle front three is the right wing a massive issue and also are you nervous about Isaac getting injured again
00:09:04
Michael
Yeah. I think that's the issue that we've had um in recent games. You know, Alexander Izak hasn't been fully fit, but he's been forced to play the full 90 minutes.
00:09:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:09:13
Michael
Brighton, we were lacking that clinical edge, same with Everton. But I think, to go back to the question, right wing's a massive issue. We knew it in the summer. and then for some reason spent all summer going for Mark Guay, centre-back 70 million, we have 70 million to spend, 35 million in one, 35 million in another, it's not exactly like we don't have the spots in the squad, um it's a very thin squad, um so it made a lot, it would have made a lot more sense, but if Mark Guay, he was who anyhow wanted, we can't argue with that.
00:09:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
because you've only got Wilson and he's also out at the minute
00:09:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
It is, yeah.
00:09:44
Michael
And then with Izak, yeah. If Izak gets injured, it's effectively Newcastle's season over because you know Callum Wilson isn't going to start 10 games in a row. And then as much as William Osula has come in and looked okay in cameos, I think the Chelsea cameo in the Cup was probably the best he's looked for us.
00:10:03
Michael
Other than that, it's been very quiet. um Looked horrible against AFC Wimbledon, to be honest.
00:10:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:10:09
Michael
um So he's not going to be up to scratch, unfortunately.
00:10:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, well, he's still a young lad and he's still a very young lad kind of doing his training up, isn't he? There's a few um few good transfer things we can chat about in a second. we'll We'll go to the ads first and then we'll come back to transfers, including Mr. Elliot Anderson, Geordie himself.
00:11:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
Elliot Anderson's Impact at Forest
00:11:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the end, that's the end right okay, It's the most gentle advert read I've heard ever. That's so calm.
00:11:26
Michael
you. That was so soothing.
00:11:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Have you heard about Sencaster? That should be like a help to go to sleep advert.
00:11:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you know what I mean?
00:11:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Lovely. Thank you for that. Really nice. Right. Talking about Elliot Anderson, the Geordie
00:11:43
Michael
I think, to be honest, most Newcastleby fans will be glad that he's moved on, but not because he wasn't good enough. Because in our midfield, he probably wasn't going to get any game time.
00:11:55
Michael
The fact that he's moved to Forest, I think he started seven or eight games for you this season. And he's got that time.
00:12:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
himself um got to lose him yeah most of them, yeah.
00:12:02
Michael
He's got that time to show exactly how good he is. We called him the Jordy Maradona for a reason. And it is a shame to lose him. But I think seeing how good he's been is sort of heartwarming a little bit.
00:12:16
Michael
There's no negative feelings towards him at all for leaving. And and we're 100%, yeah.
00:12:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah. Well, he's done really well for us. There's a massive engine room and he's got that skill going forward and he actually stepped in for Morgan Gibbs-White and did a stellar job. So it was quite a nice surprise for a lot of Forest fans who, as I'm sure you are with Isaac and Gordon, like terrified to lose someone like Gibbs-White to injury.
00:12:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he's a good player and hopefully he gets his chance against Newcastle on Saturday
00:12:44
Michael
I think anyone going back to a team they've been actually quite glad to see him succeed. Yeah. Yeah. at before, we saw on
January Transfer Window Speculations
00:12:49
Michael
our side Lewis Hall against Chelsea, same with Tino Livermento. They just take it up into their gear and they play fantastically.
00:12:56
Michael
I'm hoping that's not the case with Elliot Anderson, but honestly it wouldn't surprise me um I'm not saying I'd crawl into a hole I'd be happy for him but at the same time but I guess it depends on how he celebrates if he does the whole hands up ah no then you know it's it's kind of one of those if there's still that respect there, even though I hate that celebration whatsoever.
00:13:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
because I'm sure he'll want to show what he's made of won't he what would you do if it was
00:13:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah dramatic
00:13:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
a 1-0 Elliot Anderson winner? Dramatic.
00:13:27
Michael
If he runs to the crowd and starts giving it the big in, there might be a few problems.
00:13:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and ah I think he seems like quite a respectful player to be fair. I think he probably will give it the whole like soz lads, but it'll be interesting to to see. You know, you've got that 70 million in January.
00:13:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you think you'll you'll get those signings? Do you think you'll make two or three bids?
00:13:47
Michael
think we'll make bids, but it's it's really difficult to to make transfers in January. We've struggled with it in the past.
00:13:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's true.
00:13:55
Michael
I think most of the players that we want to buy, our links are with players in the English Premier League right now. No one is giving away, let's say Brentford, they're not giving away Brian and Buemo in January.
00:14:07
Michael
So if we do, we'll have to buy, yeah, absolutely fantastic.
00:14:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
for water player as well
00:14:12
Michael
We'd fix our right wing issues like that immediately. um But it's just one of those. We'll make the bids, but I think if we're going to bring them in in it'll probably be someone from one of the other top five leagues rather than a team in the Premier League yeah
00:14:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
What a player well yeah i mean you got spm botman from one of the other leagues maybe there's a way of looking and the center half there that could be an option the only thing with botman as well that worries me, same with van der Ven at Tottenham, is the the top, top players.
00:14:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
But like Forest, we we've finally got
Injury Concerns: Impact on Performance
00:14:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
a season. I mean, I say that we've got two or three key players that are injured. But we we used to get to like, you know, the playoffs and the championship, at top of the league by Christmas every year, and then lose half the squad to injury.
00:14:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was literally five years in a row.
00:14:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
We lost our like six best players. And we were all going, this is crazy. We can't do this every single season. And and it kept happening.
00:14:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
It kept happening. We just never got promoted. Do you think there's a worry with Newcastle fans that you know Bottman even though he is that Rolls Royce he's going to keep getting injured he's going to miss half a season every year yeah
00:15:09
Michael
yeah i think maybe not so much with swam botman because it's one of those where you got injured and then the injury has now is the same injury we just brought him back too early. But I think the big issue with that is Alexander Azak because it's been different injuries keeping him out for sustained periods.
00:15:26
Michael
And there was a worry Yeah. this season when he wasn't playing particularly well of, right, has that injury you know slowed him down as it gave him a a yard lesser pace, which yeah when you see him play, he needs desperately.
00:15:39
Michael
He'd be a fantastic player if he didn't have it still, but not world-class, or you any even in regards to that level, if he didn't have that pace.
00:15:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, fun. Yeah.
00:15:49
Michael
I think that's one thing we're worried about, potentially Gordon and Isaac's injuries on that side. But I think Sven Botman, i think even with a few injuries, even if he does lose a yard of pace because of it.
00:16:01
Michael
ah think you were I think next season we'll see a full season with Sven Bottman fit, unless there's a freak injury that no one expects.
00:16:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:16:09
Michael
But he can he can stay fit.
00:16:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:16:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it'd be a good player to have back, wouldn't it?
00:16:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, obviously you had Sonali back against, ah against Forrest for the cup game, first game back.
00:16:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Has he been a big edition back for you
00:16:20
Michael
um To be honest, no. It's a bit... It's harsh to say. Well, I don't think we've played any better with because Tenali's been in the team.
00:16:32
Michael
But I think you can see the glimpses of quality there. You can see the reason he was signed for such the high fee that he was.
00:16:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:16:40
Michael
But I think you can train with a team for a year, two years, whatever it is. But if you're not playing competitive matches with them,
00:16:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
a big addition back for you yeah
Tonali's Integration: A Work in Progress?
00:16:48
Michael
you're not on the same wavelength.
00:16:49
Michael
So you can just see the moments where Tenali's trying to play a pass over the top, brilliantly executed, but the player's not really made the run or they've not anticipated the pass.
00:16:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:16:58
Michael
I think it's one of those, we can see that in two months, three months time, he'll be starting for us and probably man of the match more often than not.
00:17:09
Michael
um Maybe slight exaggeration there. But it's just not really that he hasn't hit the ground run for us let's say that
00:17:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
go to the second advert now because I want to do like combined lineups and predictions next. And i think I think it's going to be quite
Creating a Combined Lineup: Who Makes the Cut?
00:17:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
difficult actually because on paper you'd think Newcastle would dominate a lot of the spots but I think Forest have got a few that will sneak in there for sure.
00:17:31
Michael
yeah you've got some fantastic players and to be honest it'll be to to see matt cells coming back as well as he was with us.
00:17:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh yeah!
00:17:38
Michael
um like In fact, I was at university, that's how long ago it was. So hopefully, I mean, by the looks of things, he's improved, but we'll get to an advert before we get to that.
00:17:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah
00:17:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
let's do it

yeah I might just leave now.
00:18:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
If that's how you if that's all you perform on Saturday, it will be fine. No, I'm kidding. It was lovely. What a great read. You've practiced Let's get to the combined lineup.
00:18:36
Michael
We We do it every day on the Newcastle pod, so we've had a bit of practice, although you wouldn't be able to tell when you're stumbling on the words every two seconds.
00:18:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Matt Sells obviously in Forest goal now. and
Goalkeeper Showdown: Pope vs. Sells?
00:18:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd actually, in current form, I'd probably put him in over Pope, you know, which I never thought I'd say, especially when he was your keeper in the first place at Newcastle and he was awful back in the day.
00:19:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
But's been unbelievable for us like mate he is class at the minute yeah fair yeah but mate that you should have saved that coal palmer shot though
00:19:04
Michael
Yeah, ive I've seen a few games and to be honest, you can really see the improvements been there when he was at Newcastle. I think he was 22, 23, something like that. And he looked lost. But, well, comparing him to what I would say is the best shot stopper in the league, in my opinion, don't be wrong, he's horrific with his feet.
00:19:26
Michael
Yeah, he has an error in him. There's no doubt about that. um To be honest, caught him off guard at the start of the second half.
00:19:36
Michael
Maybe he wasn't concentrating as well as what he should. But he's won us so many games pretty much single-handedly. We pretty much got the Champions League and the Cup Finals because of Nick Pope.
00:19:47
Michael
So I have to say Nick Pope, but I will say Matt Sells is one of the most improved goalkeepers I've seen in a long time.
00:19:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
okay. We'll we'll we' accept Pope for ah the number one spot. I've got i've got an idea for a back three, right? And no it's hard because, do you know what?
00:20:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Honestly, ah on current form, I wouldn't drop any of the back four, not even for like Man City's back four. But I've got an idea to make some of that. um Honestly, they're unbelievable. Genuinely, as far as fans, we're watching it going, we're on the wrong channel.
00:20:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
What channel have you put on here? Like, this is lie is not funny. It's crazy. I'd keep the two centre-halves, Murillo and Milenkovic, because they're out right. I don't want to jinx it now, to be fair, because they'll be terrible against Newcastle.
00:20:26
Michael
Bit of ah think lewis hole's got being no no no.
00:20:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd keep those two. And as much as... Oh, God, I feel so bad for dropping him, but he is on loan. Alex Moreno at left-back has been so good. And he is he is good going forward as well.
00:20:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah but See, I'd put why i'd put Dan Byr
00:20:42
Michael
Lewis Hall, he's going to get his first England call-up next week. He's been our best player this season for me by a country mile.
00:20:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
left back, mate.
00:20:50
Michael
And I think 100%, Lewis Hull is...
00:20:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Really? Do you think worth the 28 mil from Chelsea then?
00:20:57
Michael
I would have paid 35, 40, given him how he's played for us the start of the season. He's been absolutely fantastic.
00:21:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, well, there you'd go then
00:21:02
Michael
100%. Now, I can give you the two centre-backs. I would say maybe Fabian Scher has an argument in there, but to be honest, if we're basing it off this season, Fabian Scher has had one of the stupidest red cards I've seen.
00:21:16
Michael
So, I'm happy to give the two centre-backs
00:21:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
there you go then. Do you know what? On the on the red card of the fer red card situation, he's an ex-Forest player, Bereton Diaz, and he's come back and wound the Forest fans up, so I'm not a big fan of him at the minute. But my thoughts are this, and you know we don't condone any sort of violence at the GSPN you know podcast network or as Forest or Newcastle fans.
00:21:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
However, if you are going to set get sent off for some sort of headbut then, you know, nut him. If you're going to get sent off for it, just absolutely wallop him.
00:21:44
Michael
over Fabian Sher and Dan Baird. Nah. Yeah,
00:21:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Get sent off for a reason. Don't get sent off for like tickling the forehead. Do you know what I mean? What's the point?
00:21:53
Michael
do it properly. You're spot on. If you're going to do it, do it properly.
00:21:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
100%.
00:21:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, so he was right back then
00:22:00
Michael
back. So you have Ola Ina. Is that correct?
00:22:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:22:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
against livermento though
00:22:05
Michael
So, yeah. So Tino, I would back against most right backs in the league, but I know Ole'ina has been really good this season.
00:22:17
Michael
I'm trying not to be biased.
00:22:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
then. Yeah. Against Livermento though. Do you know what? As I've got both the centre-halves... right, fine. Okay, so we've got... It's currently Lewis Hall, Morello, Milenkovic and Oleraina.
00:22:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
My worry is that's going to end up as your back four next season and we'll have to assign a load of new players. Right. Midfield. This is going to be good because I
Ownership Changes and Team Dynamics
00:22:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
kind of want to put Anderson in, you know.
00:22:44
Michael
I'll go all at you now. Yeah. No, no, it'd be our sixth choice and you can't put our sixth choice in the main three.
00:22:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right. Fine. Fine.
00:22:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
and i i think I think Bruno's got a go in annie
00:22:56
Michael
I think we even said in the Arsenal crossover that Bruno makes it into almost any Premier League side, maybe except Man City when they've got Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne off it.
00:23:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
you say that but i think i think bruno will end up Man City, mate, because I think, you know, De Bruyne has passed it now and Rodri's out for so long.
00:23:08
Michael
So... Yeah. Yeah,
00:23:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
but yeah You saw last night at Sporting, they lost this is the thing, no one can have thought him now
00:23:18
Michael
they were dreadful. To be honest, it wouldn't surprise me if he ends up at City, but it's going to cost them a fortune to get him. And that fortune, yeah, that fortune is probably going to be for us what Douglas Luiz, should I say, has been for Villa, where, you know, they've been able to rebuild and actually build on last season because of that sale.
00:23:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:23:40
Michael
I'll hate to see Bruno go, but in the meantime, I'm just enjoying
00:23:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
no one can afford him now yeah yeah
00:23:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. The only worry I've got because a psr in the premier league my worry is that everyone's going to get bought by teams abroad and we' lose the quality of the premier league again
00:23:56
Michael
a Newcastle fan, I probably can't comment. But we've only seen quality since we got rid of our English parasite in Mike Ashley, should I say.
00:24:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh my god forgot about my actually god i've removed that as well
00:24:12
Michael
Yeah. Yeah, so to be honest, unless there's a note for most of the Newcastle fans as well, we would have probably taken's, we've gotten lucky that we've got someone with lots of money behind coming forward, but genuinely we probably would have taken, I'm trying to think of someone even worse.
00:24:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
removed that as well.
00:24:34
Michael
I wouldn't say the people who were at Bury, obviously, but the Wengis, I I would want have to took talk the to the Wengis.
00:24:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
wow Yeah.
00:24:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, true.
00:24:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
True. It is. It's a big point to, to be fair. But, um you know, you've got a good...
00:24:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
I say a good owner. You've got an owner with money. higher He's doing some stuff.
00:24:50
Michael
A lot of money there.
00:24:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Stavely's gone now as well.
00:24:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's it's kind of all The boardroom seems a bit weird at the minute.
00:24:57
Michael
it's one of those where we've obviously lost Dan Ashworth to Man United. Paul Mitchell's come in. There's obviously rumours that him and Howe don't get on. Obviously, everything's a drama up here in the North East, which some people love, some people hate.
00:25:13
Michael
And then there's obviously the news that Stavely could be buying Tottenham Hotspur or having a major say in who buys Tottenham Hotspur, which then could lead to the Saudis maybe having other interests than in Newcastle.
00:25:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:25:27
Michael
I think Eddie Howe said something in a press conference, actually, where basically he didn't blame a poor start of the season on it, but he said the disruptions that we've seen in the early start of the season really haven't helped matters on the pitch or off the pitch for Newcastle.
00:25:43
Michael
I think now it's starting to calm down. There's
Community Support and Fan Culture
00:25:46
Michael
no surprise that results are picking up as well.
00:25:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
you.
00:25:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%. Yeah, and I like Newcastle as a team.
00:25:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
i've always I've always been a fan. I've always wanted them to be in the Champions League. And you know when they finally got into it a few few years ago, I was one of the the fewest people that was like one of the few people that weren't surprised.
00:26:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm like like look at the size of the ground the fan base you know people were saying if you go to newcastle on like a random tuesday the entire city is wearing black and white because that's literally people's wardrobe is the kit you go to no other city and see it like the northeast really is football hard mad like they love it
00:26:20
Michael
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, 100%. I think it's one of those where it can be a little embarrassing. Sometimes when you see people, they look like they haven't showered in the ring kit. But a lot of the time, you see people like it's your average everyday person and they're just proud to wear the colours, which, you know, not exactly colourful, but it's the pride that comes with supporting any football club,'d like to say not just Newcastle yeah wings etc yeah I mean it's going to cost you a fortune to get up there you'd have to be a Saudi prince probably but yeah well it's fine.
00:26:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah well yeah
00:26:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
like they love it yeah exactly and it's an amazing place to be. You know, the new bar section you've got as well looks phenomenal with all those little restaurants. Mate.
00:26:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:27:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
for the few that get to experience it, for sure. Let's go through the rest of the lineup before we end up spending it all week.
00:27:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, the game will go past and we'll still be chatting. This is great. Oh, by the way, we won 3-1, by the way.
00:27:10
Michael
That's fine by me.
00:27:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
It happened last week.
00:27:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you know what I mean? Imagine. Yeah. Oh, no. What a shame. We've got, I'd say, so Gimoresh and Gibbs White are probably the obvious ones. Who's the third space?
00:27:12
Michael
Chris, we've got another hat trick.
00:27:23
Michael
Yeah. Right, this is going to sound horrible, but for me, I'm Yeah, so the way we're probably going to play is Joe Willick and Joe Linton rotating in a little pivot on the left wing and centre mid.
00:27:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I could see Joel. I think Joelinton's looking good in midfield.
00:27:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Would you prefer him to Willock, though? Or is Willock too? Willick's
00:27:47
Michael
But for the way, if we're doing a combined 11 and not taking Newcastle's tactics in a consideration, just as flat as their position, I would say Joe Linton's probably, for me, one of the best box-to-box midfielders in the league.
00:28:01
Michael
um He's got a temperament which is absolutely horrific at times. Clothesline against the goalkeeper in Bournemouth is an example of that.
00:28:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
too... Yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:28:09
Michael
But I think when Joe Linton's on four, I don't think there's many players better than him in that centre midfield role. So I'd have to go Bruno and Joe Linton alongside Gibbs White.
00:28:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fair enough. I mean, that's some midfield that. To be fair, we were saying at the start of the season, if I if i could predict Gibbs wanting to go anywhere, I could see him smash near Newcastle.
00:28:30
Michael
If we played it with a number 10 or sort of that kind of player, know he can I know he dips into a midfield, but I think realistically he's much better when he's ah allowed that space in those attacking areas, which he'd be allowed from our wingers.
00:28:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:28:43
Michael
Well, your wingers as well. That's why he does so well. But I think with that, him or a James Madison, we were crying out for before Madison signed for Spurs.
00:28:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:28:52
Michael
And it's a shame, but it's good to see yeah English talent doing well at English clubs.
00:28:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Well, I think long-term Gibbs-Watt is going to be weighing better value for money than Madison anyway. He's more of
00:29:02
Michael
Yeah, you're probably right
Front Three Selection: Current Form Debate
00:29:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
a tenacity player.
00:29:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's got all the skills that James Ward-Prowse has. His dead ball's not quite as good yet, but he's more skillful, he's quicker, and he's more tenacious, and he wins the ball back a lot more. So that's a good three.
00:29:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Front three, what we say, I I mean mean, it's it's Isaac Isaac against against Wood Wood at at the the minute. minute I I mean, mean Isaac's Isaac's probably probably on on paper paper the the better better striker. striker Wood's Wood's form form is is higher higher at at the the minute. minute but But, I I mean, mean you it's could it's two two of of one, one five of the other, do you know what
00:29:23
Michael
you're probably right. Yeah. Yeah.
00:29:37
Michael
any 11 that includes Newcastle players. For us, he was absolutely horrific. We're seeing a completely different player at Nottingham Forest, don't get me wrong. He looks absolutely fantastic for you and maybe that's the system more than anything else.
00:29:48
Michael
But if I'm going to the actual player, who's a better player? I think it's got to be Alexander Ezek.
00:29:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
so would you say probablyly is that Gordon on your right now well I think I think is that Gordon and then Hudson-Odoi on the left I think that's probably the lineup isn't it that's pretty I mean that's some lineup that isn't it oh 100% I mean in City's form it might get top of the table at the minute.
00:30:00
Michael
Yeah, so Gordon's been pushed out to the right just simply because we don't have very good options there. Yeah,
00:30:10
Michael
I'd agree. I'd agree, yeah. 100%. That gets top four anytime. Yeah,
00:30:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Arsenal only play with nine players, so I think we're all right.
00:30:26
Michael
I think we'll be sound. They get a red card every other game. We'll be fine.
00:30:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Exactly.
00:30:29
Michael
It's only Liverpool we've got to worry about. Can you speak that easily?
00:30:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. wow yeah just I mean, we got lucky.
00:30:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Matt Sell's got lucky that day, I tell you, right now. Right, predictions then.
00:30:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's going to be a really good game, especially because it's at Forest.
00:30:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
If it was at Newcastle, I think if it was at Newcastle in your current form, I'd probably say you'd added it at maybe 2-1.
00:30:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think at the city ground, anything could happen to be fair. and What are your thoughts?
00:30:54
Michael
I think we've got a really good record at the City grounds in the Premier League. I think, in fact, there's a stat here that the
Game Predictions: Newcastle vs. Forest
00:31:00
Michael
Forest Ground is actually Newcastle's best ground. We've never lost there in the Premier League.
00:31:05
Michael
We did in the Championship.
00:31:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow.
00:31:06
Michael
We have in Cups. But in the Premier League, we've played six games, won all six. Or I believe we've not lost, should I say. I know that much.
00:31:16
Michael
I think it's one of those where I'm looking at it now and I'm going, this is the one where we might lose. I think this is the one where we could struggle. But after the game against Arsenal, I'm confident.
00:31:30
Michael
So I'm going to say 2-1 Newcastle.
00:31:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, so I usually have a sixth sense about these things.
00:31:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like I had a sixth sense last season. I was like, I don't know, with the Chelsea game away, I just thought, I've got a feeling that we might just edge this we might win it and we won 1-0 and this year I had the same thing like Liverpool won all the games and I was like maybe there's one game coming up where slot just gets it tactically wrong can't figure it out and that was Forrest and we won 1-0 and I was like I had that feeling and Forrest have done really well recently but we've given away a lot of goals and ended up with draws a lot and I feel like because Newcastle are coming back into form as well I feel like it's one of them where we might start strong and then give away a dodgy goal and be under the cosh for the rest of it so I could see a 1-1 to be fair
00:32:09
Michael
That would make sense, yeah. Yeah, I definitely wouldn't be unhappy with a draw. I think you're the informed team in the league, really, at the moment.
00:32:20
Michael
I think, you know, people are in third for, you know, it's for a good reason. You know, it's not because teams are underestimating you or disrespecting you. You're there on merit. I think, you know, we got that when we finished fourth.
00:32:32
Michael
our People are just underestimating them. Noyes are playing really well. And so to be honest, I think this will be a ah good test of sort of where you are because Liverpool, everyone ups their game four.
00:32:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm. Mm. Mm. Mm.
00:32:45
Michael
But at home to Newcastle, it's a really tough fixture.
00:32:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:32:47
Michael
But you're not sitting there going, oh, well, we've got to play brilliantly because we're against Newcastle. So I think it'll be one of the best tests of where Forest are at the moment. um And it'll be a really good test of you know whether or not Newcastle have improved or if we just went, we're playing Chelsea and Arsenal, we need to be up for it.
00:33:05
Michael
So, we've got Pouard away form, really.
00:33:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:33:08
Michael
Well, we've got history of Pouard being Pouard away. The Forest Browns one we're usually quite good at. So, a draw does make sense, but I'm going to stick with
00:33:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right, fair. Fair. I mean, 2-1 either way. is going to be I think it's going to be a good game. I always say at the end of every podcast, I'd love it to be like 4-3.
00:33:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
What a wild 90 minutes that would be. But yeah, I think it would be good. Dude, thank you so much for joining us. And hopefully we'll see you for the reverse leg at St. James'. as What a game that's going to be as well.
00:33:37
Michael
close. we'll see you then
00:33:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Legend.
