Protecting Personal Peace

00:00:00
Speaker
This is what I live by and it has changed my life. It's so simple and I'm sure y'all have heard it before, but other people's opinion of you is none of your business. Not playing the comparison game, putting your blinders on if you have a goal in sight, no matter what the goal is, drowning out the noise.
00:00:24
Speaker
and unless it's a valued opinion, don't take it that you can cut off relationships even if they're blood. If it's not serving your universe, I'm all about protecting that, protecting that peace, not worrying about other people's opinion of me and it's served me well.

00:01:39
Speaker
Hello and

Guest Introduction: Whitney Williford

00:01:40
Speaker
welcome back to another episode of Finding My Best Self. Today is our first trio interview, so we're super excited. I have, it's myself and Mandy, and today we have Whitney Williford with us. Whitney is a wife, a momma, an entrepreneur who owns a fitness and nutrition business, and she is a podcast host.
00:02:03
Speaker
So Whitney, thank you. Thank you so much for joining us today. We got to talk a little bit before we started and I am so excited for her to share a little bit about herself, her business, her podcasts, all the good things and everything that she's been through in life. So Whitney, welcome.

Whitney's Health and Wellness Journey

00:02:20
Speaker
Hey, I am so excited that y'all asked me to do this, that our paths have crossed and we kind of found each other because I feel like we just kind of mesh and we're, our star is kind of aligned and we're just in this to connect and have a conversation and help others. That's what it's all about at the end of the day. And we're very much about that too. It's all about, you know, just aligning everything, just aligning in place the way it's always supposed to be. Yeah.
00:02:50
Speaker
All right, well, can you tell us a little bit about your business and you know, we're both fitness and advocates for fitness and influencers in that realm. So just give us a little bit of feedback on that.
00:03:01
Speaker
Yeah, so I mean, we can go way back. Like I've been in the health and wellness space since I was five years old. My mom has been a personal trainer since then forever. And I've just always kind of been in this space and really loved it. It

Founding FitMom Society

00:03:16
Speaker
wasn't until recently when FitMom Society was actually like born, the concept was actually thought up and I prayed about it. And I just saw over and over,
00:03:28
Speaker
that women, especially moms, are just kind of walking around aimlessly, without a goal, with chronic fatigue, like don't have the energy to play with their kids at the end of the day. And I was like, okay, this is a problem. Like, how can I insert myself in this community of moms and help? You know, so I've kind of really pushed my knowledge and expertise and experience over these forever years, right?
00:03:54
Speaker
and formed a community and a program that is really welcoming and judgment-free zone. We start to do life together, but we also get stuff done. We're trying to get healthier. We're trying to have more energy. We're trying to connect with our partner spouse again. All of those things, I love to see when the coin drops.
00:04:21
Speaker
you know, when that light bulb goes off and I was like, oh, this is how I'm supposed to feel.
00:04:28
Speaker
You know, and when it does, we hit the ground running, you know, whether that's workouts or eating better, decreasing alcohol, like all, it's an all encompassing thing that helps with your everyday life. And that's what I formed my business around.

Community and Faith in Business

00:04:45
Speaker
And I have a membership and a program and a course, like I meet you where you are. And you know, that is my thing now. My passion, my purpose is to help moms be
00:04:57
Speaker
find their best self. Yes. Okay. So the more you talk, the more I love you because you've said some things that we didn't say off camera. So first of all, you said that you prayed about it, which I absolutely love, Mandy and I are very much believers in God and just in prayer and spirituality and things like that.
00:05:15
Speaker
You also said specifically about moms being fatigued and needing to pull themselves out of that. I would love if after this, I actually have someone who is in my mentor program who is rolling out a new product that is also specifically for moms that helps with them with fatigue. It says supplement. So if you're interested, I would love to connect you to, if maybe y'all could collage some kind of way because you would really, really like her.
00:05:43
Speaker
Yeah. So tell me what led you to wanting to own a fitness and nutrition business. It

Fitness Programs for Moms

00:05:50
Speaker
was kind of inevitable, to be honest. Like I said, maybe before this, I had owned a gym.
00:05:59
Speaker
in our local town, and it was just a freestanding gym. It was class-based, kind of women-heavy, but everyone was kind of welcome, you know? And I decided to sell that early last year because it was just not serving me, you know? It was not serving my energy, my joy, my family.
00:06:22
Speaker
It was more stress than fruitful, you know, like all the things when you are like, okay, I need to park with this, right? So I had gotten to that point and this is where I was still taking one-on-one clients. Like I did one-on-one nutrition for forever. It helped hundreds of moms. Anyway,
00:06:41
Speaker
It was kind of one of those things where I'm like, okay, God, where do you see me going now? Or where, how can you unveil my eyes of where I need to go? And this concept of, you know, one-to-many kept coming up, right? Instead of one-to-one because I then became a stay-at-home mom. So that's a whole other subject in and of itself, right? I was in that season of, okay, one-on-one doesn't make sense.
00:07:10
Speaker
in this season because he was at home, my one-year-old was at home with me. I couldn't provide a 100% top-notch service, which my clients deserved. Like he was in the background. Like, I don't like that. Okay. So I kind of dwindled that down and kind of fizzled my last clients out, out of the picture. I was like, okay, what, what am I doing now? God tell me. And
00:07:34
Speaker
this concept of a six-week program like a one-to-many program kept coming up and it was really to benefit moms in the beginning stages. That is like my bread and butter. That is
00:07:49
Speaker
my passion is to help somebody just get their foot in the door. I know that that door threshold is so hard to insert yourself because it can be intimidating and the fear of judgment can creep in and all of these things. So this six-week concept coming up
00:08:08
Speaker
And the words beginner, starting over, jump start, kept coming to mind. And I was like, well, I can write a workout program all day in my sleep. I can do nutrition all day in my sleep. How do I make this a one-to-many situation? So I made a program, a six-week beginner program, like back to basics. Let's just get your thing going. And that's just how it came about, kind of naturally. It's been very bootstrappy.
00:08:37
Speaker
which I know y'all get. And it's been successful since then.
00:08:43
Speaker
I love that. And I think both

Navigating Fitness Challenges

00:08:45
Speaker
me and Pam can kind of relate to that because that's kind of like where our, you know, partnership friendship started was like, I was coming off of my second child, digging into nutrition, starting over, I had gained 50 pounds in my second pregnancy and, and Pam too, you know, we both kind of were kind of coming out of something, looking for something new and just diving into, but like you said, it's such a hard thing to,
00:09:10
Speaker
to navigate because you're also navigating motherhood, you know, running a household, all the things that we do. And so I love that you kind of started from scratch and offered that because I think like you said, it was a problem and it's still a problem that a lot of women deal with is just the beginning and starting. So I think that's great. It's the fear. It's the what do you do or how to start or what do I even do? I think that's a lot of it, right? It's just the fear of I don't even know what to do.
00:09:40
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, that's literally it. That is the feedback I get every single day. If somebody's gonna ask me or get into my Instagram DMS, they're like, what do I even do? Like, and they're in it can be such a big overwhelming world, this health and wellness, nutrition, fitness, space.
00:10:01
Speaker
that they feel like they are like so far behind or I've never been a workout girlie. Like I don't even care about this, but I know it makes me feel my best, you know? And where do I even start? That's, that's a hard question to come to the table when
00:10:19
Speaker
You're already, you're asking a person like myself that is so far ahead, right? Like I am so far down the road that that can be really intimidating for somebody to say, hey, I need help. I can't do this alone. How do I link arms with you? Right? That takes some balls.
00:10:40
Speaker
Like cut that out if you need to, but that takes a lot of gut and bravery to, you know, come to a fitness enthusiast or a community of, you know, like-minded moms. I mean, but they're moms just like you at the end of the day. You know, it's just, starting's the hardest part. So that's where I have found myself helping moms specifically is that starting point. Yeah, 100%.
00:11:09
Speaker
So whenever you're talking about health and wellness, is there something as far as like specifically wellness wise or nutrition wise that you kind of target or with your six week program or just in general? Cause that's a hard thing.

Building Sustainable Routines

00:11:26
Speaker
Yeah, and it's consistency. It is not the sexy answer. It is the boring answer. It is the answer that's going to make you coast through, but it's also the answer that is going to build habits. It's going to build long-term sustainable routines that is going to set you up for success within yourself and your household.
00:11:48
Speaker
Like, can you imagine like the perfect world is when mama's good and ready to go, right? Because we're the glue. We make everything function. So if we're not functioning, can you imagine the chaos? Yeah, you know, so that's what I really try to drive home on in this six week program specifically, is that they get active weekly coaching from me too. So if they've got struggles, wins, they bring that to the table. And we talk about that every week in real time.
00:12:17
Speaker
And it's always going to be.
00:12:22
Speaker
set up a consistent routine that flows really well with your current lifestyle, whether that current lifestyle is crap, right? That's honestly a benefit. I know that sounds wild, but there's no place but up from here, right? There has to be some encouragement and some inspiration to be starting from scratch because you can make it whatever you need to make it.
00:12:52
Speaker
So I really encourage moms to think about their current lifestyle and what's realistic. Because at the end of the day, it's probably not going to be working out seven days a week for an hour and having a restrictive diet, right? You're going to throw in the towel week one. How calender productive is that? Extremely.
00:13:14
Speaker
So I really try and hone in on the fact that we have got to slide this into everyday life. That will be, if anything comes out of this episode and anybody listening, like that has to happen first. Yeah.
00:13:30
Speaker
I said that to people over and over and over again. I don't know if we said this already, Manny and I used to do beach body coaching and we still both are active beach body users too. But I had so many people come to me and they're like, Pam, I want to be like you or do what you do. And I'm like, you can't just jump in and get to the point where I'm at. Like, you know, I work out six to seven days a week. I work out for an hour, two and a half hour and a half every day.
00:13:55
Speaker
You can, as a beginner or someone just coming into it, just jump into it like that because you are going to quit. Within, before seven days, you're going to be like, screw this. Eight, you're going to be extremely sore, overly sore, and you're just going to give up because just the nutrition side of it, that in itself is just like you just feel defeated.
00:14:20
Speaker
Yeah, and I think you're, you're in that mindset too of, I know we've all, we've all been there, right? But you kind of start in that mindset where you're, you're playing the comparison game, which I do not recommend, you know, playing that comparison game of I'm Sally, but I'm looking at Pamela and Mandy.
00:14:41
Speaker
thinking, Oh, I cannot wait to be there. Let me do that today. Right? But they're comparing their day one to your day 700. And it just doesn't work. You know, so it's just not something I would recommend is playing the comparison game. I find a lot of people do that.
00:15:02
Speaker
And just automatically have that hesitation to not start. So that's why I like going back to you building something that literally starts at what you did day one and offering that to people because I mean, I know I had that comparison before cause you know, like I said, I was doing beach body.
00:15:20
Speaker
And looking at all these people that were already fit and active as moms, and here I am with two kids under two, and I'm like, I just wanted to give up before I even got started. Yeah. And there's a million of those Mandys.
00:15:41
Speaker
Right. Yeah. The before you had any education because we can't know better until we can't do better until we know better, you know, and yeah, I just want to, I just want to hold her. You know what I mean? Walking around. I just want to be like, you can do it. You can do it. Just take a chill pill though. Just take a chill pill. Like you're going to get there. Don't give up. Yeah.
00:16:07
Speaker
It's so hard. So outside of, or maybe even inside of your fitness, whatever it may be, like what's one major life goal that you're working on right now?
00:16:19
Speaker
Oh, I

Self-Care and Personal Goals

00:16:20
Speaker
need more specifics. What do you mean? Like in fitness or in personal life, like my faith? Either way, I guess whatever it is that you're willing to share. So if there's one specific goal, or even if there's multiple, where's your focus at right now? Because like you said, you had the gym, you sold that. And so we know that you're working on building your community and helping moms with their fitness.
00:16:43
Speaker
what outside I guess and just being a mom and wife and all, you know, doing all the things like where are you at in life? I think not getting to like on the professional side of things because I think that's something we can all talk about offline. I think our the listeners to this are like, okay, give me some tangible tips of what I can do to better myself. You know, I am going for a half marathon in March.
00:17:11
Speaker
So that is the thing I'm going for is more endurance training. I've been really loving that. I've been like a hit girl, weightlifting, all that kind of stuff. And I've just been loving running again. So that's like a personal fitness goal is the half marathon on my birthday in March. And just, just surviving that literally just finishing it.
00:17:41
Speaker
just finishing it. But when it comes to faith, just being present, like that, that's what I'm trying to work on is being my healthiest self because everything trickles into your life when you are feeling your best.
00:18:01
Speaker
you know, when your energy level is increased, your fatigue is kind of out the window, like it's a good place to be, but it takes some time and some balance and some compromise and some sacrifice, you know, and it's just finding where it all fits in, you know, making time for priorities,
00:18:26
Speaker
which is faith, spouse, kids. That's just how I believe in things. God comes first, then the relationship with my spouse, then everything's gold with my kids. I mean, that's what I've got going right now.
00:18:44
Speaker
Y'all just let me know what y'all are looking for and I will speak into our brand. It's just everything. This is happening organically. Am I a part of the team now? Absolutely.
00:18:59
Speaker
This is, but you are just, you're, you're repeating the things that Mandy and I say all the time. Like we, you know, we say that specifically, you know, to roll off of what you said is that when, when you take care of you, when you are good, whether it's in, you know, with fitness and your nutrition and mentally, spiritually, emotionally, all of those things, when you take care of you first,
00:19:24
Speaker
everything else is great, you know, and it's it's you have to take care of you. And we say that over and over and over again, you know, because we I just my my episode last week was just on that, like, it's okay to be selfish, it's okay to put you first, because we as moms think that, oh, you know, it's, it's, you know, we're always catering to everyone else, I have to cater to my husband, I have to cater to my children, and my job and, you know, customers and clients and giving, giving, giving, give, and then all of a sudden, we're just like,
00:19:54
Speaker
depleted. We don't know who we are. We don't know what we want to do, you know, with our life and like, who am I? Yeah, what do I want? Because you're just totally depleted. So you have to take care of you. And that's what all of this comes in and kudos to you about the half marathon because that's awesome. Hey, it's it has not been easy. So my first goal it last month was
00:20:21
Speaker
5k under 30 and i've been trying we did our first 5k it's called the turkey trot down here in beaumont texas uh shout out beaumont but it's called the turkey trot on thanksgiving morning before thanksgiving starts you know whatever and i was like let me just finish like let me just not walk right like that was my goal was to at least jog the whole thing right and finish at 35 so i was like okay next one's gonna be 30 so i had a few months to train
00:20:51
Speaker
And I did it in 2910. I mean, I had literal seconds to spare or 2950. No, I had 10 seconds to spare. That's what I was. But it was freaking hard. It was brutal the entire time. It was misty. The wind was against me. I wanted to stop me eight different times. And I was like, you know what?
00:21:14
Speaker
When you're done with this thing, you are going to regret every single time that you started walking or taking a breather or whatever. And at the end of it, I literally had zero time to do any of that. But I would have just been like, dang, I'll let myself stay on because I could have gotten this goal done.
00:21:34
Speaker
if I would have just kind of caved into my mindset, because that's what it is. It's all a mind game. I know my body could do it, but my mind was telling me no. And I feel like we get into that type of mindset or season, you know, whatever you call it, kind of piggyback of what you said, Pamela is we feel like we've, we got it twisted. Let's just say that we've got it all twisted where we feel like we've got to
00:22:04
Speaker
take care of everyone else before ourself. But just imagine, you know, when your health and wellness and in fitness, and it doesn't have to be slinging weights around could literally be walking is optimized. Just imagine how much more energy, how much more presence you could give your job, your spouse, God, your kids. Right. And I feel like we're working harder, not smarter. You know? Yeah.
00:22:34
Speaker
And when things do get hard, it's just that mental, like coaching yourself through it and telling yourself not to stop at this. And that's in anything.

Mindset and Support Networks

00:22:43
Speaker
Cause I know like in every, like how, I mean, Amanda and I talk about this all the time too, like how many times that we talk so negatively to ourselves or having to talk ourselves out of feeling just that sense of defeat, or I can't do this at those negative IMS that are so, you know, so powerful.
00:23:01
Speaker
you know, whenever you can tell yourself that I can't do this or I want to stop or I'm not worthy or who do you think you are, you know, that I can't is so powerful. Yeah. And I feel like this is when faith becomes a huge component here and your tribe, like we talk about a tribe and it takes a village and all that, but are we actually practicing those things? Like, are we reaching out? Are we saying,
00:23:31
Speaker
Hey Karen, like I'm going through this thing. I need help or I just need somebody to talk to or will you go on a walk with me? Like I feel like we don't do that enough, myself included. I feel like I can handle it until I can. Yeah. And having the right tribe too, right? It's having those people that are going to openly listen and actually care and to either A, lift you up or B,
00:23:59
Speaker
tell you the things that you need to hear, you know, to make you rethink, you know, what you're thinking. I know I have different, my different friends, you know, like I have my one friend that I go to when I need someone who's going to ask me those questions because she's not very much of a friend who gives me her opinion. She asks me questions whenever I tell her what's going on until, you know, she, she gives me those questions that make really makes me think. And then, and then I'm like, I put my own self in my place, right? Because she asked me a question. I'm like,
00:24:28
Speaker
Oh, dang. Do I know? Other friends that I'll go to that I just, you know, I'm in that feeling or just need someone to just remind me of who I am. Like to, you know, those friends that are going to be like, you know, you've got this and this is why, and you know, and all those things. So you just have your different types of friends. But if you have any friends that are super negative or critical of you, you have the wrong tribe around.
00:24:52
Speaker
Yeah, I just recorded or dropped a podcast episode yesterday on surrounding yourself with friends that will hurt your feelings. I saw that. Why it's actually a good thing to have somebody to call you out or, you know, speak truth into your life and not be a surround, you know, and not be a surface level friend. Like I would rather go deeper than wider.
00:25:23
Speaker
Mm-hmm. And I just think it's important to have those people in your life. Yeah. For sure. Yeah. So in the middle of all the things that you do, what do you do in your downtime that's just for you aside from business, family, spouse, all the things? Like, is there anything

Personal Interests and Lifestyle

00:25:44
Speaker
besides training for a half marathon
00:25:47
Speaker
Just your, what do you consider like your me time outside of all of that? I love to read. I love to read. It just depends on what mood I'm in and what season I'm in. I either like really calling Hoover vibes or I like somebody that's going to pay the way
00:26:13
Speaker
Yeah. Oh, I'm like die hard fan. Or it is like somebody that's already paved the way from an entrepreneurial standpoint of, you know, learning from their mistakes or going through their guidance. Like I have a whole stack of like nerd out geek entrepreneur stuff because that's what I like to do for fun is work on my business. I know that's like, it might be unhealthy.
00:26:40
Speaker
I don't know, but it's fun for me. So I don't, I don't know. I kind of teeter-totter on, is it too much? Is it not enough? You know, those things. So I like to read a lot. I love to cook. I love to garden. We live on 60 acres in East Texas. Oh, wow. So jealous. Hey, it's a lot of work. I have one acre and it's my favorite, but I'd love to have big property like that.
00:27:10
Speaker
Yeah. And I mean, it's been in our family for 100 years last year. They bought it in 1923. So we will have it. Our kids will have it. You know, it's been passed down generation to generation, but it's a lot of work. But once you see it be fruitful for you, there's nothing better than gardening in my opinion. I just love it. I like to be a homebody. I'm not super social, like brunch on the weekends and stuff like that.
00:27:39
Speaker
I don't care. I don't care about that. Once again, I feel like we're all the same people. Aren't we like triplets? We're all the same. We're totally going to hang out for sure because of the audio. Now the gardening.
00:27:52
Speaker
I love a garden, but my husband is the gardener, not me. We'll hang out. We're going to come to your house in Beaumont and you are going to school me and Mandy on gardening because I would love to garden. I'm just so like, I do not have the green thumb at all. Like I will kill grass. Like it's, you know, it's bad. So we'll, we'll come and we'll like hang out at home because that's what we like to do at your house. And you can like teach us the garden stuff. That sounds like silly.
00:28:20
Speaker
We have trails cut out in our lane too, so we can go for a run, do a podcast episode, get in the ice barrel. I do like to do that. There you go. I like to cold plunge. Me too. And garden. I have an ice barrel where I work out. It's just the whole thing. My dream from a podcasting standpoint is to have people come to my space
00:28:45
Speaker
We do a workout or a walk depending on their fitness level, do a cold plan to get them out of their comfort zone, do the podcast episode and just connect and have a good conversation and a conversation that will help at least one person listening. That's my dream. Okay, so let's do it.
00:29:08
Speaker
I'm so down. Okay.

Exploring Cold Plunging

00:29:10
Speaker
So Ken, this is definitely, this was not on my list of questions, but you brought it up and I know a lot of people are curious about it. Cause I've talked to a lot of people about this because I am also really big in the cold plunging too. And when I tell people, we talk about it, it's like, cause some people are curious, right? And some people are like, no way in hell would I ever do that. Right?
00:29:28
Speaker
You know, and I'm just and then I have some other people that are like, well, I've tried the cold shower and stuff like that. And I'm like, it's not the same. Standing underneath running water that's cold and sitting still in still water that is cold is
00:29:44
Speaker
completely different. And so the best way that I try to explain it to people is it's, it's the initial getting in. It's just that jumping in and I'm like, and I know this sounds crazy. I'm like, but within 10 seconds you don't feel it. And I'm not joking. Like it's, you get in there and when you sit still, as long as you don't move, right? Cause it's the movement of the water. That's what makes it feel so cold. If you get in and don't move and let the water become calm and you just control your breathing,
00:30:12
Speaker
like I'll turn on the music in my bathroom because I feel like my tub and dump ice in there and I'll turn on the radio and within 10 seconds I'm singing along to the radio like it's nothing my husband walks in he's like you are freaking crazy what are you doing because I'll set my timer for like six minutes and I try to increase it so like I'm up to like seven or eight minutes right now and I just sit there and
00:30:31
Speaker
And, but it's what I've found is several things. A, I cut fat a lot faster when I do that consistently. My muscles are not sore. When I do it consistently, my abs show up more than they've ever in my life. There's so many benefits to it and not to mention when I do it first thing in the morning.
00:30:52
Speaker
It's like a mindset thing. When I get out, I feel like I can conquer the world. And I know that sounds crazy, but it's true. It's when you do something that's so hard. It's just that instant mindset flip of I can do anything.
00:31:11
Speaker
I've never done it. So y'all are making me intrigued to try it. I've been the one that's like, no way. I'm not, I hate being cold. I'm telling you. Like absolutely hate it. So what do I do? And I'm always cold. Like I get, like, I get that sense of cold, like where my bones are cold on the inside and I'm miserable. Mandy, I am like, I, you can ask, like I do not, like I am cold all the time. I live cold. I love cold plunging.
00:31:40
Speaker
Love it. Yeah. So what's the question? I'm sorry, I know. What's your experience? What made you want to do it and what benefits have you seen from it? Because I know what I see and how I can explain it to people, but it's different when just more people can chime in on that.
00:32:01
Speaker
So I would definitely say I've loved it. What made me start doing it? I was influenced by a friend and a couple.
00:32:11
Speaker
in Savannah and she, she's a dear friend of mine and I just saw them doing it. Sauna cold plunge, sauna cold plunge, like consistently and they're bomb, like bomb body. And I was like, okay, well this is clearly working. So how can I be a part of this? And so I started doing the shower thing, which I think that is a good gateway. Okay. I do think it is a good gateway. It does. There is a difference. Just like Pamela said, there is a, it's freaking miserable.
00:32:41
Speaker
I don't like it, I tried it. It is a good segue into the plunge, okay? If you're gonna start, at least start there. But I won an ice barrel on Instagram, like the ice barrel brand. Won it, I was into my house and I was like, heck yes, I'm so down. But I will say, when no one believes me, when you say cut fat more rapidly, you really, really do.
00:33:09
Speaker
just like mental clarity is better fatigue is better mood is better. I mean, internally, like you said, your your muscle soreness has decreased, because there's more blood flow, it increases and regulates blood flow, like there's so many different benefits that I feel like
00:33:28
Speaker
the people that complain about it or say, I could never, I don't know how you do it, you know, whatever, like the mandies, I know. But I'm just like, do you want to optimize your health and wellness or you do or you don't, right? Like you've got to do like a small, small time sacrifice for a long-term gain. Like think about the benefits rather than the pain, you know, and I don't know, I'm just like a more,
00:33:57
Speaker
harsh mindset. I'm like, either do it or you don't, but I'm going to still do it and you're going to be wishing you all this fat shit. Okay. I'm down for that. So I'm going to go find, find one this weekend.
00:34:13
Speaker
So I'm like the super nerdy geek that I went and like researched it because I was like, why does it make it burn fat? Because you know, I am like, I have to know why about everything. Like I want to know why. So I went research and I'm like, why does it burn fat more? And so they explained that your body has white fat and brown fat, which I did not know this until I read this, right? Your body has white fat cells and brown fat cells. And that when you're went from working out, eating right to all that stuff, you're only burning the white fat.
00:34:40
Speaker
And your brown fat is what is on the very, very surface, like right below the skin layer. And when you're doing those cold plunges because of something, and I don't even know all, I don't remember all the technicals on that, but that burns the, that burns the brown fat.
00:34:55
Speaker
for how, how, again, I researched all this and I don't remember all that. Those are the things that I do remember that stood out to me was the difference in the, and I was like, so, but, but from working out and eating right and all that stuff, your body can eventually burn brown fat, but it's like extremely hard to get to that point.
00:35:12
Speaker
where your body's doing that on its own, but the cold plunges do that. So I was like, well, that's cool. That makes, you know, some sort of understanding behind it. Yeah. And it makes sense. Like why not expedite your goals? You know, I know it's painful. I know it's cold, but like, it's also really enjoyable when you get out. It's like, Oh, yes, it is so refreshing. Even if it's 40 outside,
00:35:38
Speaker
It's actually warmer outside when it's 30, 40 degrees and it is in there. So it's actually just a relief, stress relief, like we could all use that.
00:35:48
Speaker
You know, okay. So I listened to this podcast and it was with this and I wish I remember which one it was because I would say it because it was so free. I listened to this podcast episode 12 times and I'm not even exaggerating. That's how like it much. I liked it. So this guy talked about cold plunging and he said it this way and I was like, you just hit the nail on the head when you take a shower, right? And it's hot. The water is hot. When you get out, you're cold and you're freaking miserable.
00:36:18
Speaker
But when you cold plunge and you get out of that cold plunge, your body is instantly warm. And it feels a heck of a lot better getting out of a cold plunge than it does getting out of a hot shower. And that is the truth. And I was like, oh my God. I was like, that is so true. And I never thought of it that way. But he's like, wouldn't you rather get out and your body feel warm than get out and your body feel cold?
00:36:43
Speaker
And that makes so much sense too. That makes so much sense. And that just brought up a point. And I was like, Oh my gosh. Yes. Where when you do get out and it is colder, I'm wondering if that's where the body temperature regulation comes into play. Like I'm thinking about this in real time right now. Like I wonder if that's like a factor of body temper regulation. Yeah.

00:38:13
Speaker
Okay, so let's go back because I trailed off because I just like you talked about cold punches. I guess I like geek out over the cold punches because I love them so much. So let's go back to your books. So you mentioned some books. So you said Colleen Hoover and whenever you're in your season of wanting just something fun or different. But as far as what's your favorite, whether it's the motivational books, inspirational books,
00:38:34
Speaker
fitness books, you know, health and nutrition. What's just your favorite books in general? And then we'll, we'll drop them in the show notes for listeners too. Okay. I love atomic habits. I feel like that's just like a no brainer on the top of the list. Number one, if you haven't read it, read it and getting on James Clear's newsletter, getting on his email newsletter, he sends out something every single day. That's just like, I know we're in our email so you can get your motivation that way. Right.
00:39:05
Speaker
Something else I'm reading right now that is probably my new favorite is the comfort crisis. And it is a book where in today's society, like our lifestyles today, we are too comfortable in our house, in our relationships, in our routines. Like we are never getting out of our comfort zone or getting uncomfortable for a longer period of time, whether that's, you know, a sticky conversation.
00:39:34
Speaker
an uncomfortable networking opportunity, a speaking engagement, building new relationships or fasting. You know, it can literally go in all different directions, but it's basically a book about how we are too comfortable and how to get uncomfortable and what the benefits are. And I love it because I'm always preaching about getting out of your comfort zone, no matter what you, your lifestyle is.
00:40:01
Speaker
I think there's a lot of growth opportunity and getting uncomfortable and doing something new and doing something different. And I loved, what else did I love? I don't know. Those are two that really come to mind. I'm always reading this every day. It's a year of positive thinking, but it's literally like date by date of
00:40:23
Speaker
motivation or just some tidbits and nuggets that you can set your day up for success or change your perspective on something. Those will probably be my top three. I love that. So if you had to give us one piece of advice for our listeners and for us, what would that be?

Valuing Personal Relationships

00:40:45
Speaker
Oh gosh, like anything?
00:40:48
Speaker
Yep. Anything. Whatever you ask. Yes. This is what I, this is what I live by and it has changed, just changed my life. It's so simple and I'm sure y'all have heard it before, but other people's opinion of you is none of your business, not playing the comparison game, putting your blinders on. If you've had, you have a goal in sight, no matter what the goal is.
00:41:14
Speaker
drowning out the noise. And unless it's a valued opinion, don't take it that you can cut off relationships, even if they're blood, like, if it's not serving your universe, I'm all about protecting that protecting that piece, not worrying about, you know, other people's opinion of me, and it served me well. So that's probably the biggest piece of advice I could I could leave y'all listeners with.
00:41:42
Speaker
Yep. I know Mandy and I can both agree to that very much. Once again, another conversation that we have had.
00:41:50
Speaker
I think that's the hardest part too, especially whenever you might have had those relationships or they are family, but you know, you want to hold your peace and keep your peace. And so you start, you know, you start to distance yourself. And if they are not understanding, it's like, it's not that I don't love you. It's just, I'm protecting my own peace. You know, like I have to do this for me. So that's huge. It's, it's really, it's really, really hard. Like.
00:42:18
Speaker
in real time going through something like that. And it's with a parent and it's, it's really hard. It's very sticky. It's very egg shelly. And I don't like that feeling of walking around eggshells around somebody. So I won't walk around that person, you know? Yeah. Life is too damn short to be unhappy and
00:42:46
Speaker
not full of joy and fulfilled. So of your interview today, what's the one thing you want listeners to take away? Most importantly, something that you talked about.
00:42:58
Speaker
There's so many good things. Like we just naturally and organically just started spilling out gold. I would say if you're in a place of starting over wanting a jumpstart doesn't even have to be health and wellness and fitness related. Like just finding you again, you know, getting unstuck. The, the only way you get unstuck is to not stop.
00:43:27
Speaker
So at least take some baby steps, whatever that means, reaching out to a friend, reading a book, listening to a free podcast, you know, Googling something, whatever. Reaching out to what the three of us, I would say just start doing something that is going to help you be the best version of you. Period. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. I love that. So.
00:43:56
Speaker
Finding

Self-Discovery and Happiness

00:43:57
Speaker
my best self. So what do you think that means? Like the woman beyond the cape? Like what does that mean to you whenever we say that? Because that's what we say on our podcast and just in general. So the woman beyond the cape, what do you, what does that mean to you when we say that? Pink. Like her superhero cape? Mm-hmm.
00:44:19
Speaker
Yeah, so one of our models is that every woman is the epitome of superwoman, but there is a woman beyond the cape that needs to be loved and nurtured too. So when you think about yourself, what does finding my best self, that woman beyond the cape mean to you? Oh, that's so deep. There's so many ways we can go with that. I would say, I mean, clearly you don't always have to have it on.
00:44:47
Speaker
and turned on. You don't always have to wear the cape, but you've also got to be secure and confident and know yourself worth enough to take it off and be yourself. But you've got to find yourself first. Take a step back and
00:45:12
Speaker
remember what used to make you happy. So when I think about taking the cape off or finding your best self, it's like good mood, positivity, but what makes you feel that way, right? And if you haven't felt that way in a long time, we gotta do something, right? There's a deeper issue there. So when I think of the woman behind the cape or beyond the cape,
00:45:42
Speaker
it's that you don't always have to have it turned on. And I've been in this space too before. Last year, my one-year-old got diagnosed with a rare blood disorder. So like totally shook us up. It completely
00:46:03
Speaker
changed the trajectory of where our family was going and just shook us, right? Just shook us to the core. And I felt like I always had, we were such in a critical era, in a critical time, because it was really bad for a few months in the hospital, in and out. And I felt like I had to have the cape on.
00:46:25
Speaker
I had to be superhero. I had to keep our wheels moving, even though we just got hit with this, because I have another child. I don't have just one focus on one child. I have somebody else that's completely healthy, fine. I felt like I had to just bear the weight of being fine, being regular, still being playful with him when I'm
00:46:51
Speaker
I'm not. I am not fucking, you know, and I feel like now I'm at a place where I can, I can take it off, but it takes some time, you know, and finding your best, best self takes some time and it takes some digging and it takes some self discovery, which can be really fun. It doesn't have to be daunting and sad and you know, what used to make me happy doesn't anymore. Like it doesn't always have to be like that, you know? And so,
00:47:20
Speaker
That's what I think of that in a long-winded answer.
00:47:27
Speaker
No, I love that. I love that so, so, so much the way that you answered that because that really is it. It's, it's, you know, when sometimes when you ask people what makes them happy and they're like, Oh, my husband does know what makes you happy. Oh, my kids do know. I know that your children make you happy. What makes you happy? What do you like? And it's, it's, there is a very defined line between those two things is, you know,
00:47:53
Speaker
things in life that bring you joy, but what makes you as a person, as you know, Mandy, what makes you happy? What makes Whitney happy? There's a very defined line between the two. I totally agree. Yeah.
00:48:09
Speaker
Well, Whitney, we, I have, I know, Mandy too, we have thoroughly enjoyed having you with us today. Thank you so much for coming on. We are going to drop everything in the show notes.
