Introduction to the Purple Door Podcast

00:00:10
Speaker
Well, hello and welcome to the latest episode of the Purple Door podcast, a friend's rewatch pod. I'm your host, Alison, alongside Deanne. Deanne, how are you? I'm doing great today, Al. How are you? Doing wonderful. The snow and the ice has melted, so we're finally able to get back out and about. It's a lovely sunny day.
00:00:30
Speaker
yes that's true and there's still some like in the shady areas because we got so many inches here but um yeah it's nice not to be cooped up anymore nice not to be cooped up but unfortunately back to work tomorrow oh yes there is that but the sunday we do that's right we don't want to bring the conversation down after 48 seconds so Well, I'm excited to get stuck into this week's episode

Bamboozled Trivia Game

00:00:57
Speaker
with you. So why don't we start off by playing a little bamboozled and I've got some questions for you and I hope you do for me. Okay. All right. Well, why don't I start off with one for you this week? How long ago from this episode was Ross's birthday? Seven months. Seven months. Yes. Yes. It got me thinking about when his birthday would have been and when this was released and all of that.
00:01:23
Speaker
Oh, see. Yes. And that made me giggle too, because then I started thinking and I was like, and for some reason in my head, I have it that his birthday is, my birthday's in October. And so in my head, I have it that Ross's birthday is somewhere around my birthday. So I'm not real sure where that confusion in my own personal brain came from. I think it's one of the friends kind of folklores that maybe his birthday changes a couple of times. I might be wrong with that. Okay. I think,
00:01:52
Speaker
We might get into that. If they talk about his birthday, well, they do. It's a later time. Okay. And I think it kind of shifts around and as age changes, if I remember rightly. Okay. Okay. right That would explain it. All right. I have one for you. It's a number one. Cause I was all sad about not having the number one last time. Right. How many steps is it from Joey and Chandler's apartment to the coffee shop?
00:02:21
Speaker
Uh-huh. Now this was one of the questions that I had on my list and I took off. So I know that it's 97 steps. Yes. We're doing so good. Look at us go. Look at us go. I love it. All right. We're one for one each. All right. Where was Phoebe's first job?
00:02:45
Speaker
Whoa. So the Ken, I'll give you, not really a hint, but the, They think maybe she walked in a mine cause she talked about when, but it's not in a mine. It was shit it was a something else. Yes. That's exactly right. Because she said it was, there was a mine explosion and however many people died. Yes. They were like, you worked in a mine? And she was like, no. and a Was it a bookshop? It was

Humorous Job Revelations

00:03:15
Speaker
not. She walked in a Dairy Queen.
00:03:18
Speaker
That's right. Oh, she walked in the Dairy Queen. wo wo who All right. So what's the name of the drink that the girls have at their slumber party?
00:03:37
Speaker
You've got me with this one. I remember there's rum in it. Cause as soon as Monica says rum, Rachel grabs it. I don't know the name of the drink. Tiki Death Punch. That sounds like a metal band name. I like that. Yes, but there's something that you would drink out of a trash can and call it. That's exactly right. The Tiki Death Punch. Well, that's awesome. And like I said, I've ended up with five in case we had some extras, but actually all three are from I think the exact same scene.
00:04:09
Speaker
Oh. But, let's see, what one will I do? I'm going to give you a sort of numbers one, but this one is, I feel, a bit tricky. What is the score that's shown on the jumbotron when Ross gets hit with the puck? Oh my gosh. Yeah, sorry, so you might just have to guess a random hockey score. Ah, three to one.
00:04:31
Speaker
You got your 50% right. It was 1-1. It was 1-1. OK. Dang. I started off so strong. You did. I felt a little bad. That one was a bit unfair. That was, yeah, man. That's like Eli. That's good. All right. So what piece did Phoebe lose to her game that she brought to the Slumber Party? Oh.
00:05:00
Speaker
I remember they couldn't operate on the operation guy. So what piece would that be? They could prep him. I don't think this is really the technical medical name. Are they just the tweezers? Yes. Right. Some kind of scalpel. No, they're just the tweezers.
00:05:24
Speaker
Oh, you want to do one more? One more? Yes, please. All right. Awesome. Okay. Well, because I know you've got five, so we get. Yes. Okay. So whenever the pizza guy brings the pizza, yeah and um you know she gets ah Monica gets all excited because of George Stephanopoulos, which I could I want to have a whole conversation about that. We need to discuss that. But um she gets you know all excited about it. And then um ah Rachel turns to Phoebe.
00:05:58
Speaker
What character name does she get mixed up with George Stephanopoulos? Just because I love this. she called Now, I may get this wrong because I don't remember. She still uses the first name, George, but Snuffleupagus.
00:06:16
Speaker
Yes, very good. Now, I don't know if I could picture Snuffleupagus. I know he's from some so TV show. It's Sesame Street. He's the big old Harry. Ah, the woolly mammoth thing. Elephant, woolly mammoth guy. Yeah. ah That's it. But he's a missionary friend, I think. That's kind of awesome. I'll need to go and look at Snuffleupagus. It's a great name. It's a great name. Yeah, it is.
00:06:40
Speaker
Well, I've got two more questions. They're kind of tied into each other. One of them, again, is a numbers question. So if it's a little obscure, I apologize. What were the two teams playing ice hockey that the boys couldn't see? I do know that. That's the Penguins and the Rangers? You are correct. Yes. Yes. Look at you

First Paycheck and Financial Realities

00:07:00
Speaker
go. now yeah This one, i'm um'm I'm feeling like it might be on paper. How many angry Pittsburgh fans does Chandler say are there?
00:07:08
Speaker
4,000. Look at you go. Look at you go. I shouldn't have felt bad. You know it. No, don't feel bad. 4,000. Look, we did pretty well this week. I feel like we rocked us some random. Yeah, were we're finding our little groove. I love it. Yes. Well, tell let's get started talking about this episode. They are in the intro. They're in Central Park talking about um being omnipotent.
00:07:34
Speaker
which I think plays our last episode we've recorded. We talked about not understanding certain jokes when we watch this as teenagers. And now, I don't know, I feel that this scene kind of segues that conversation very nicely into this one. Oh, yes. Yes. Uh-huh. Yeah. Because I remember not really understanding it at all. Yeah. Oh, poor Joey. Poor old Joey. Feels so bad for Ross.
00:08:01
Speaker
this Yeah. And then, ah yeah. And Ross just walks away. But it makes me, okay. But I feel like that scene, it it really kind of develops Phoebe a little bit more. Because yeah she's like, you know, world piece, like all of her stuff was for the world, except for the very last one. And it just kind of goes right along with her character and who you kind of think she is, you know? Yeah, developing that hippie world piece kind of character that we we come to know and love.
00:08:32
Speaker
Yes, yes, yes. And then, yeah, and then Ross, oh, you took mine. Yeah, that's the last one. I think it's brilliant. And then there's always one little wish for three more wishes. Right. I think we all know something like that. You know, if the genie came out and granted you three wishes, that wish from limited wishes. Yes. Yes. Right. Yes. And I think that's, but Rachel doesn't ever answer, does she?
00:09:02
Speaker
You know, I didn't notice that. I think, you know, I'm thinking back to the scene. And neither did Monica. Yeah. It kind of got disturbed, maybe with Joey coming in, they asked him and then it went off a little tangent. Okay. And so, yeah. Okay. But let, okay. Last time that we talked, we also talked about, uh, uh,
00:09:26
Speaker
Jack or the Geller's parents. Yes. Yes. Okay. Oh, ah ah sorry. Are you good? Moving on to the next like, athlete please oh yes there and then they talk about the vacation and Ross slept through the Grand Canyon. And that made me think about, you know, what a, what a really like middle-class all American family thing.
00:09:50
Speaker
today to do. You take the road trip, you take your kids to wherever, right the Grand Canyon. And that ah there's a couple

American Road Trip Reflections

00:10:00
Speaker
of other things that I made notes about as we were going through this um this whole this um episode that makes that kind of makes me think even more so about that they're probably upper middle class versus Rachel's world.
00:10:16
Speaker
Right that's interesting I remember I heard that but I didn't put that together but you're right that is a very sort of stereotypical almost American middle class thing that road trip to the Grand Canyon with your kids everyone piled in the car sort of thing. yes yeah Have you ever been out there? Have you seen the Grand Canyon?
00:10:35
Speaker
I have been out to the Grand Canyon a couple of times, they went as a kid and checked it all out. And then as an adult, I went and um I went with ah some of my friends and we like rode the donkeys on the, or not, they weren't donkeys though. They're mules. They're mules for the hybrid between the...
00:10:57
Speaker
I know way too much about them now, but like you need to share. I love this. Oh, okay. Well, they can't reproduce because they are a mix between a donkey and a horse. Are you telling me they're omnipotent? ah Possibly. Possibly. No.
00:11:13
Speaker
oh <unk> walk po
00:11:19
Speaker
but moving on yes sorry sorry about that but anyway yeah and i ripped my pants as i was climbing onto the mule the very first time and so i went and i rode and we didn't go all the way down to the bottom but it was a few hours and with ripped pants and it was it was so cool and so terrifying and so very uncomfortable i could imagine i went and saw it but i just kind of you know stood at the top and looked down and I wish I'd been able to do the mule. I'd love to go down and spend the night on the bottom. Okay. And then come back up. Yeah, I didn't even know that that was a thing. And I was like, oh my gosh, like that would have been awesome. That's but on the list. Yes, that is a great thing, I think, to have on the list. I don't know if it's on mine or not, because I think I'm okay if I don't. Right. You can live your life. But I did ride the mules.
00:12:16
Speaker
that's yeah That's very much something I would love to do. it' um it so yeah Phoebe's asleep in the public in on the couch because her poor old grandma, poor old grandma and her boyfriend. yes yeah yeah i can I can fall asleep in public, which much to sometimes Kate's surprise, I could just sort of drift off a bit.
00:12:39
Speaker
Yeah. I used to be able to and then, you know, and then kids and anxiety and all the things. all the I don't do that anymore. Right. But yeah, I used to be able to, and, um, my, my parents were always like, well, she can sleep anywhere. Right. Not anymore. Now let's see. And then Joey and Chandler have the hockey tickets and poor old Ross. Again, going back to the episode we did, uh, recently pearls sad sack Ross.
00:13:08
Speaker
seriously it's like come on now now i don't know about you but it seems kind of high up on the uh on the the weird icky factor that Monica knows this date okay yeah i agree with that because i was like why and the thing is is that she knew that date before he did yeah she's like oh i was hoping you wouldn't That was weird. Yeah, it's weird, right? It's an icky, icky odd thing. Kate and I discussed that when we re-watched the episode yesterday, but yeah, that whole thing is weird. Mm-hmm. Yeah, we'll move on. Yeah, we'll move on. And Rachel gets her first paycheck and the cruel tax man is taking questions. Yeah, who is faking? Why does he have all my money? Now, of course, you remember, what was your first job?
00:13:57
Speaker
um My first job was at a dry cleaners. I worked at a dry cleaner as well as in high school. In high school and dry. Very nice. Yeah, it it it was. I've probably got a couple of burn scars still. but Still the legacy of the dry cleaners. Seriously, but I can make some are the seams on pants real nice and straight. Look at you go. Dry cleaning is one of those funny things that I'm sure everybody deals with this. You'll suddenly go, I'm a certain age and I've got no idea how something works. Like, I don't know how microwave heats up food.
00:14:35
Speaker
Like, and I had to Google it recently. Cause I was like, okay, it's the water molecules and stuff. Cause it doesn't get hot. So how's the dry cleaning? I was like, did they wash the clothes? If it's dry, like I didn't really understand that and I won't ruin the surprise for any anyone who might be listening, but I had to Google, is it are they cleaning the clothes in a dry fashion or is there water involved? Like I ah made it to 43 years old with having no idea. And it depends. That's the answer. yeah It depends. I ended up deep diving dry cleaning and how all this works and I now know far more than I'll ever need to.
00:15:12
Speaker
Right, but it's a fun, interesting conversation for our friend's repo. Watch out. Exactly, exactly. Huge of thought. This has been the place that we end up discussing it. But what was your first job, Al?
00:15:22
Speaker
My first job was I delivered newspapers. So every morning I would walk down to the newsagent convenience store and I'd be there six and I'd fill my orange bag with newspapers and would deliver them probably 10 or 15 streets, seven days a week and got paid 15 pounds a week to do it. That's 22, 23 dollars.
00:15:47
Speaker
It was seven days a week um and it would take me about an hour and a bit to every morning. Wow. Yes, that was lots of fun. Did you do it on a bike or you walked? I walked mainly because it was sort of every three, four or five doors up a street or several streets, but it was straight uphill. So a bike wouldn't it wasn't the sort of you see this or the suburban kid on the bike throwing the newspapers on everyone's lawn. ah Right. This person has ordered this newspaper on these days. So it's very specific.
00:16:24
Speaker
Wow. but I did that for several, I don't remember quite what they just started, in but several years. um Yeah. yeah what what's it fun Okay. Now I have a question. So my dad, who ah obviously grew up way before, we did, but his first job was a newspaper kid, right? And, um, ah he, he was like 10.
00:16:50
Speaker
or something. How old were you whenever you got your first job? Probably 12. Wow. And they would pay you 20 something dollars a week too. Yes. Yeah. I always remember it was 15 pounds a week. That's what I got. You were rich. I was rolling it and it was before school as well. So after school I was still free. So it was kind of nice. And you had all this money. All this money burning a hole in my pocket had to figure out what to do with it. I love that. That's awesome. Yeah. Well good. um If I have dry cleaning questions, I know where to go. There you go. Coming to you.

Central Perk and Rachel's Dilemma

00:17:24
Speaker
Well, Rachel's three friends come into this point and are screaming and obnoxious and annoying. I don't think they actually, well, in the show, in the episode, I don't think they get named.
00:17:36
Speaker
um I did look them up on IMDB and they do get they do have names that they credited, but I didn't catch Rachel actually saying any of their names. I don't know if I'm right or wrong. She does. She does, okay. ah Well, I know, and I can't think of their names, of course, but like the one that um was had lost all the weight, as you said, like one of them is named like Tammy or something. Right.
00:18:04
Speaker
And, but there are some random names that were thrown in because I thought that was so random, but they just did that so we would know who the heck they were. Right. Just to give them a name for the sake of their name. Men alive, they were annoying and like just unaware of being in a coffee shop surrounded by other people. Okay. So did you get the impression that Rachel's mom sent them?
00:18:30
Speaker
I hadn't thought of that. But yeah, maybe sent her sent them to convince her to come home. That hadn't occurred to me. But now that you say it, that seems like a very logical progression. Like, Wiles, it'd be quite a coincidence otherwise. Yeah. Well, because they say that Rachel's mom told us that you were working here, and here you are. That's right. Yeah, amazingly.
00:18:54
Speaker
And then they, you know, they have like small little chit chat. And then it's like, okay, so seriously, when are you coming home? And so I, I wondered if their mom because they had obviously talked to Rachel's mom, right? She had told them that. So I wondered if they took it upon themselves or if Rachel's mom didn't kind of help that along.
00:19:15
Speaker
I think you're on to something. I could see her saying, yeah, while you're there, why don't you try and, you know, yeah, convince her to come home. So, and I laughed at the part whenever they're like, I've done that with friends. i and forever I've I believe you're having dinner tomorrow night with her or something. Yes. Maybe you'll do that then. Of course we will. But um but it may say laugh whatever Monica and Phoebe are like, and I have elbows.
00:19:49
Speaker
that's
00:19:52
Speaker
It's brilliantly done. So funny. They're so good. Well let's see, we move from there to the street scene where the boys are all walking down and again Ross is just the the sad sack that he is for most of this episode.
00:20:07
Speaker
ah everything seems to remind him of Carol. It did dawn on me though that I think I've eaten at least the average amount of peaches for a human being my age. I don't know when I last ate a nectarine and suddenly I got thinking about all these different, I don't know if I could tell the difference actually, if you just threw one down in front of me, I don't know if I would know if it was a peach or a nectarine. ah Yeah, I don't care for peaches and i don't write I know I ate nectarines whenever I was a kid, but like, yeah, I would have no idea. Like, why would you know that? Right, I would assume it's a peach, but and anything you put down in front of me that's kind of that color and, you know, round, but yeah, nectar, he's just, I mean, he drives me crazy. And we'll get to this at the end, but when we're thinking about my favorite and your favorite character of the week, I know who my worst is.
00:21:00
Speaker
Just because, who could it be? And I will tell you, I have felt guilty for days about me being so ugly about Ross, but I think I was horrified. Things turned around. Yeah, at this point, I think we certainly are justified. Yeah, he's just bringing everybody down. And we ended up going back into Central Park, like you said, where the friends are asking Rachel, she's coming home, she defends her job, she talks about the specials on the specials board and to your point the one of those three ladies says ah your mom didn't tell us about the what was it the what's she called the bluebies the bloopy things on the cookies that's right so obviously that you're absolutely right this conversation with mrs green went on a little a little it was a little deeper than maybe i realized initially
00:21:50
Speaker
who And we go from there back up, let's see, the girls apartment, Monica and Phoebe fighting the slumber party with the, what did you say the rum drink was called? It was brilliant. A tiki death punch. Tiki death punch. And the only ingredient that we know is rum. Rum and then was it kind of pink or purple or some odd colour? It was a mauve, I think. A perfect mauve.
00:22:15
Speaker
but I see the visa people call, hasn't used a card. I can't imagine a credit card company doing that. you know Unusual activity. yeah That's it. yeah so So funny. And she's, I mean, she's almost having a midlife crisis at wherever she is 23, 24. You know, everyone else is doing all these things. And Yeah, she's having a bit of a tough time. And it goes back to that whole plan thing from two episodes ago. Whenever she's like, didn't you just always think that there'd be the plan and the and she goes back to that. Is that whatever they're talking about? No, it's not. ah I'll wait. Yeah, but you're right. though it It goes back to that and then in the very first episode.
00:23:01
Speaker
what is it she says? You know, she's talking to her dad and yeah, there's that running theme. Yes, all of that, like she's forming this new identity. And I like that that's dropped into, if not every episode, certainly most of the episodes up to this point. So it's ah it's a nice little theme to keep going on. But so we moved from there to the hockey, which I thought it was interesting the way they've obviously filmed.
00:23:25
Speaker
or taken a couple of scenes from a real hockey game. Okay, so that's what I was gonna ask you because I was like, the the cinematography, I don't know the real word for what it was, but it's so obviously different for that scene, like whenever they come in and all of that, and I was gonna ask you, I wonder why it looks so different. ah But that would make sense if it's from an actual hockey game.
00:23:52
Speaker
I'm assuming they took some, or maybe they just sent a camera man, camera woman to a game to get that shot. And then the one of the player hitting the puck that, you know, hits Ross in the face, you know, because yeah it's grainy out, it's different, it's not filmed in the same way. So there's definitely something to that. And that might be something to to deep dive into. But do you have any strong feelings on ice hockey? On hockey, do you like it, dislike it?
00:24:20
Speaker
I don't have any strong feelings one way or the other. right I've only ever been to, I think one stars game, which is you know our local, I say local, it's like an hour away, but our professional hockey team, I went to one whenever I was in high school.
00:24:41
Speaker
right out a couple of years ago. I think I've only been to one, a couple of five years ago, maybe. Couple, yeah, yeah. Couple, we don't need to get to details, we don't need that. I think I've only been to one as well, and like I enjoy it, I don't fully understand it. Right. I don't know where the puck is half of the time. I just look for the thing to go off above the goal, and then I know they've scored. But i like I think I get it, it's fast-paced and it's fun, I just don't know all the rules. and really what icing is and things like that but it's fun to watch yeah okay yeah but they find their seats and then we we go back again we seem to flip and then they're not sitting together and they're not putting together which would have been interesting had because it at the very beginning whenever there ah Ross is like so y'all couldn't decide which one y'all got to bring a date so y'all are bringing me
00:25:33
Speaker
And I'm like, I wonder if that's why the tickets are the way that they are. Whoever had bought the date got to sit with her and then the other one had to sit by be behind. that i didn't catch that you know I saw that they were sitting in two and then one, but that's probably it. yeah Yeah. I just thought about that, but that's so funny. Because why else would you have them sitting that way? Right. Yeah, because Ross could still get hit with the puck whenever they're sitting. cause That's a really good thought.
00:26:03
Speaker
But we go from there, we're back in the girls' apartment, and Phoebe's talking about Rachel being Jack in the beanstalk and all of that. It's such a funny story that she's telling, just a you know quirky, weird Phoebe-ness. Yeah. Well, and it and it comes back at the very end.

Phoebe's Unique Storytelling and 'Floopy'

00:26:19
Speaker
That's right, the last one. right here And then I like the word floopy. Everything's floopy. And I'm like, yeah, uh-huh.
00:26:28
Speaker
Yeah, it is it's very, I don't think I've ever heard that before or since, but it's perfect for that moment. You know, it's the exact right thing. And I feel like that's accurate at the stage in life that they're at. It's floopy. It's okay to be floopy. It's okay. You should be floopy at that stage. Yeah. I think that's awesome.
00:26:48
Speaker
Well, then we flicked back over to the hockey game where Ross, the big moment of the episode, gets hit in the face with the puck. Now, I've got to say, I'm assuming that that is impossible. I always assumed there was nets around the top of the glass, especially behind the goal, because the player shoots, misses. But and might again, I might be wrong. Maybe somebody who knows more about hockey can somehow let us know. But I assumed that that couldn't happen.
00:27:16
Speaker
Yeah, well, but it was the 90s. So it true that maybe it could back then. But yeah, because I know that there's glass all around. but i don't know Yeah, I just assumed, and like I said, it's been years since I've been to my one game, but I don't know, I'll have to think about it, where there are the nets hanging down. Yeah. um And like I said, it was the 90s, so maybe it wasn't quite as litigious as things could be now. I don't know. That's a simpler time. A simpler, and easier time. I'm glad we got to live it.
00:27:49
Speaker
Let's see, we go from there and then with this' we end up in the emergency room with this infamous woman behind the counter who is unsatisfied with her candy bar. Yes. Oh, Dora. do Okay. I want to come to that in a minute because if I ask you now, I'll lose my train of thought. But the Dora thing brought brought up an interesting conversation with Kate and I that I need to ask your opinion on. But do you have a favorite candy bar or one you hate? Yeah.
00:28:21
Speaker
ha
00:28:24
Speaker
I don't know. yeah i did it like i don't I don't know. Sorry I'm just throwing random questions at you as i as I think of them through the episode. Yeah, i not one that I would spend time on hold to talk about, like one way or the other. Right. correct I don't really have, and know I don't really like peanut butter, so sort of Reese's and things, not a fan. But again, yeah, like you, I don't really have strong feelings on any of these things.
00:28:56
Speaker
Now, but I will tell you, I do have strong feelings. It's not a candy bar, but it is candy. It's those little nerd cluster things. I have very strong feelings that those are delicious. I don't know if I remember having nerds as a kid. I don't know if I could really remember what they taste like.
00:29:18
Speaker
Yeah. They're like these little hard candy things of sweet goodness, but they've got them now and it's like chewy gummy on the inside. And then it's covered with the nerds on the outside. I'll send some home with Kate tomorrow. All right. Yeah. I feel like sample. Listen, report back on our neck when we record the next episode. Yes. There's your homework. That's the work in the new segment of taste testing. I love it. He's testing the delicious candy.
00:29:48
Speaker
Well, speaking of taste testing, I've got a question about this next scene where they're back in the girls' apartment and they're still kind of bummed out. They don't have the plan or a plan. They started talking about that. Yeah, I don't even have a pluh. A pluh. And the pizza arrives. It's the wrong one. But I was going to ask you what was on the pizza. I had to cut the questions back somewhere. Do you remember what was on the pizza? What George's one has? Is it mushrooms? That's one of three things on it, yeah.
00:30:16
Speaker
No, that's the best I can do. Mushroom, green pepper and onion. But they claim they ordered one with a fat free crust. Is that such a thing? I heard that and that was in my brain. I was like, what, what is that? I can't imagine it would taste good. it was Yeah. And if you're going to do pizza, like do it right. You know, a fat free crust just seems Like, if you're trying not you know to eat fat free, then that's great, but don't order a pizza is my thought. And cheese, I don't know. and It just doesn't seem like something I've ever heard of or would necessarily exist. Right. um Right. No, I'd never. But in the 90s, that was whenever the whole big craze with the fat free and then there was the
00:31:09
Speaker
The pills, the fat blocking pills. that Right. All of that stuff. Your fat was the enemy, right? Yes, yes. Well, and i'll tell these I looked up um the pizza guy, the guy who delivered the pizza. Yeah, who is he? I was like, who is that guy? And he's like, I don't know who that is. And so he's somebody.
00:31:30
Speaker
I could have saved this for the brand new information segment. His name is Sean Whelan or Waylon, excuse me, which didn't ring a bell. He's one of these guys that's been in a ton of things, but he's always in the background or like a a very small part. And I'm going to list, he's been in, he was in the movie School of Rock. He was in Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
00:31:52
Speaker
A superstore, Criminal Minds, lost. It wasn't superstore. He was in superstore. The one that caught my eye, he played, he was in three episodes of Drumroll, Days of Our Lives.
00:32:08
Speaker
Whoa! Which I've never seen, but what a fun connection that is to the Friends universe. Yeah. But all of these shows and more, he's like, he has a name in these things. He's a credited actor. um He's done some writing too, but yeah, it's just one of these guys that I think we all maybe recognize, but don't necessarily know where from. I mean, I've watched, I've watched all the Superstore criminal minds and Lost, you know, so I've seen them in at least those three things.
00:32:35
Speaker
Yeah, that's crazy. Now this is, I'm going to jump ahead just slightly because this is where I have a question for you. They're back in the hospital and the angry nurse shuts the glass and Chandler does that little one-man monologue kind of thing. Yeah, and then she turns around. and scar I love his physical comedy. Now I didn't know if her name was Dora or if that was a skit from something else, like he was just repeating a line from you know, another play or something. Oh, I had no idea. I don't know. And I couldn't quite read her name badge. You know, if it was like from, you know, Hamlet or something where he's just kind of. Yeah. but not Oh, oh.
00:33:21
Speaker
Yeah, I have no idea. That's a totally different way. Yeah, I love that. That's such a good thing to think about. One of the great things about doing this podcast is I feel like we might see things like the Grand Canyon. I skipped right over that. And then the way I read this was it was almost like he was in a play. But I don't know. I don't know the answer or I could be just making things up completely.
00:33:46
Speaker
come But yeah, but ah wow, yeah, I just wrote down I was like Dora ah doris Yeah, what did i write down
00:33:56
Speaker
yeah I just heard Dora I'll miss you Dora right, right it it's I love the scene I love the way he does it Oh, he's golly, man. Yeah, he's so funny. just Yeah, physical comedy in the way he uses speech, obviously the famous way of pronouncing things. is The timing and its all of that. So good. We go forward and there's just a quick scene on the balcony, which Kate pointed out, I think she's right, is a different shape from other episodes in the future.

Ross's Emotional Balcony Moment

00:34:25
Speaker
I think it's more square and I think it becomes more correct. It is. And it's smaller. Yeah, because it is. It's smaller. And then later in the, actually in the season, whenever Rachel and Ross are out there and then the cat comes and jumps and all of that, it's longer. Interesting. My mind went to jumping way ahead when Monica's dating Pete.
00:34:50
Speaker
And I just remember Joey was out there cooking for a minute or something. um Yes. Cause he drops it, Phoebe's turkey burger on the floor. And I just remember being bigger in my head cause he was out there grilling. And so that's good. I'm glad you noticed that too. Cause I wasn't quite sure, but I felt it was, as Kate said, there was a different shape. Yeah.
00:35:10
Speaker
We go back to the hospital and once again, Sad Sack Ross is describing the night, andhandler and Chandler and Joey have just lost it at this point. I thought Joey's so funny when he says, whoa, hockey was a big mistake. ah Yeah, well there were so many other things we could have done tonight. Right, which I'm assuming Joey's referring to a strip club or something, which he does at later dates. You know, something a little more seedy and sordid than a hockey game. Yes, yes. But yeah, that was so fun. but Yeah.
00:35:39
Speaker
Yeah. It's funny that they've just finally lost their patience with them, you know, when we'd all lost it much earlier. Right. And then it explains and you're like, Oh, okay. All right. Yeah. Maybe I'm sending a little more, a little more of what's going on. Yeah.
00:35:54
Speaker
Let's say we go back to the balcony and it's funny the girls all confess something. There's some great ones there. They're jerks. They really are, right? this is ah guess I guess it you can confess these things after some years, but poor old Phoebe, whether it was was a goose in the pate or something, that Monica made the vegetarian pate. Yeah. And she's like, unless goose is a vegetable. Right.
00:36:20
Speaker
old like That's so mean. I'm trying to... Okay. Yeah, go ahead. Go ahead. Okay. So, this is a timeline thing. Right. Whenever Phoebe says that she doesn't feel so bad about sleeping with Jason Hurley. Yes. And then Rachel, or she's like, you know, it's after they broke up.
00:36:40
Speaker
And Rachel's like, ah you know, and how long? Oh, a couple of hours. um But Rachel and Phoebe were talking like they knew but like Rachel and Monica had a talk since high school.
00:36:54
Speaker
That's a very good point. and And so it made me curious like how how that all kind of, and I'm sure there's probably some very logical explanation, but Phoebe, we know how everybody else is connected. Right. But for Phoebe, like how she ends up, where she ends up. Yeah. And I mean, Rachel did not know Phoebe before that first episode. Right. Right. And so like,
00:37:25
Speaker
My first thought was, oh, Jason Hurley, that must have been from high school, but they didn't know each other from high school. And then I was like, OK, so then it would have been after high school. But Rachel and Monica weren't talking. They weren't still close or anything. No, that's why she wasn't invited to the wedding because they drifted right apart. So I wonder if it was, yeah, the timeline again is Monica's got quite a few boyfriends in these first few weeks if it's somewhere in there.
00:37:54
Speaker
Oh, I don't know. That's interesting. And so it's a little, it's not really foreshadowing to we were on a break. But it's interesting that, you know, a couple of hours, they were already broken up. Yeah, that's fine fine it's So everything's fine. Yeah, let's see. We'll go back to the hospital. ros Oh, sorry, go ahead. to pay Oh, and Rachel Peter pants. Yes. seventh grade That's Monica made her laugh. I wonder, I wish we knew what Monica did to make that happen because that would be great to know.
00:38:24
Speaker
Now I've got a very important question for you that Kate noticed something in the next scene. And this is a discussion that I've had and it's, ah man it's caused some interesting discussions of work. So Ross comes out with his nose bandaged up and Kate noticed there was a milk vending machine in the background. Oh. No.
00:38:44
Speaker
I could not tell you when I last had a glass of milk. It might be 20 years ago and there's ah there's a

Oddities in Hospital Scenes

00:38:50
Speaker
definite division amongst my team at work as to people who think drinking a glass of milk as an adult is odd and those who think it's not odd at all and everybody should have a glass of milk. It's good for you. When was the last time you just poured yourself a glass of milk?
00:39:06
Speaker
Oh, okay. I had milk in my cereal this morning. No, that's, that's fine. That's a different, different. We've discussed the incident. That's fine. Yeah. Just a glass of milk. Yeah. No, I like chocolate milk is different. That's different too, but just yeah your normal plain run of the mill straight out the cow. I couldn't I'm guessing I was a teenager, a young teenager at that. Um,
00:39:33
Speaker
So a milk vending machine that is not something I think would exist, and certainly any more. Maybe at the time it did. But um Kate noticed that. She was like, that's that's an odd thing, perhaps a dated thing from the 90s.
00:39:46
Speaker
yeah i what Why do we even buy that from a vending machine? It's got a expiration date. Right. It's like, okay, what about the milk on this on the shelf at the store? That's not even refrigerated, but they say it's milk. and I think I'm at the point of life where even just drinking any milk, like you said, without cereal or milk is in something, that's fine, but I think that would taste weird to me now. Yeah.
00:40:17
Speaker
just pouring a nice big glass of cold milk, just kind of icky. Okay, moving on, my tummy hurts. Oh, sorry. Let's move on, shall we? Well, Ross has got his broken nose, like, is that a joke about what is it not Texas Chainsaw Massacre, maybe? Silence of the Lambs. Silence of the Lambs, that's it. And the kid has this puck. Now I know you as in various capacities, one of which is a parent. Can you imagine your kid being such a jerk?
00:40:47
Speaker
as this kid is, I mean, you and I both, yeah. Well, where's this kid's parents? Where are these kids' parents? And then why is he sitting there in the emergency room by himself? And why, why, why? Right. Yeah, I feel like that was probably Dora's kid. Probably. Maybe he actually just dragged him to work. That's it. Then over there, nobody will notice.
00:41:15
Speaker
Yeah, it just, it just, what a horrible kid he is. And we end up going back to the girls' apartment. I think this is the final scene where they're playing twist down. Oh, wait, you didn't even talk about what ended up happening to the puck. Oh, dad of course, sorry, I skipped right over it. Wacking Pearl Door a little karma for us, straight in the face with a hand. Yeah, okay, so now here's the question. Would Ross get his puck?
00:41:42
Speaker
He didn't. So it's funny you mentioned that because I look to see, you know, right after the scene, they all kind of just stand there. Yeah. Nobody goes towards getting the puck or nobody. They don't run to leave, which I thought they might. They might just get it. He just says, this is fun. And this is fun. And they just keep standing there. So you're right. Where does the puck end up? Because now that he's had that whole interaction, like I want that puck.
00:42:10
Speaker
right and especially if that's his one fun thing for the night you better take that puck yeah would you take the puck out would you go behind the desk and get i think if i could i would ask somebody for that puck you know if there was another person back there if dora was uh incapacitated It was what appeared to be. ah she does I mean, i'm I'm one of those people that I'm not a hoarder by any stretch, but I like a little souvenir from places. Yeah. And you know, that hockey puck, if it was from us an occasion like that, I think would sit in my office. You know, I like that kind of stuff.
00:42:47
Speaker
Uh-huh. Me too. Yeah. Me too. And it like reminds you, it makes sure you don't forget about the little fun things, you know? Yeah, I actually got something yesterday sort of in honor of the podcast. Not that anyone can see this, but I was looking on eBay after you and I recorded our first episode and this came in the, it came yesterday.
00:43:11
Speaker
It's number! It's a Gunther Funko Pop! In honour of his very first episode on Friends! That's why I looked him up and he was as he was a steal on eBay. I thought I'm gonna have to order that and it arrived yesterday in time for us recording today. That's so awesome, I love it! So I could get in trouble, I've got a variety of Funkos from all sorts of things so I have to be disciplined and I think just get one character, one one of each character from Friends and yes they'll sit there so we do our podcast every week.
00:43:40
Speaker
ah But I thought of Gunther after you brought up that great point. that I didn't realize that was his first, um his first appearance. And now he sits here while we, while we podcast. I love that. Yeah. So let's see that in the girls apart, they're playing Twister. One thing I noticed that I thought was interesting when Ross spins the board, he's holding it vertically. So it's always going to land on the same thing.
00:44:06
Speaker
ah I don't know if that was a deliberate thing or if he just, in acting, he didn't think to lie it flat or what it was. Or if it's just Ross being Ross. It's just Ross being Ross at this point. Okay, did you get the guy that came and brought the pillow back that Rachel had knocked off?
00:44:28
Speaker
I just, I get there's no words spoken, but it's just brilliantly done. Like I love that the guy doesn't say anything. That makes that moment for me. Oh yeah. And then the fact that he just takes it and is like, okay. Okay. Like if he had said, oh, here's the pillow, it fell on the ground, I guess it was, then that would be a nothing scene. Like what's the point? But it was the, yeah, the no words made it, made it brilliantly done.
00:44:56
Speaker
Yes. And then Visa calls again, which kind of makes it all full circle. Full circle. Because she has her magic beans. Yeah, because at first whenever Visa called, she was not okay. ah Not fine. and She has left the building.
00:45:12
Speaker
she And now and now I've got my magic beans like the guys like what I Can you imagine what the guy on the other end of the line would have been thinking Like ja what are you talking about? but You can't make your minimum payment Right. That's right. You can't pay it with beans. What are you talking about? Well, it's a good episode. It's a good episode. Now, I've got one piece. We talked about this before we got started recording some brand new information about this episode. I had to dig a little deeper than normally because I couldn't find much. Like I said, I found out a bit about the pizza guy. Let's see. I've lost his name again. Sean Whelan.
00:45:59
Speaker
You know, I did want to find out a little bit more about the nurse, about Dora, um because I thought she was really funny. Did you know that she has won a daytime Emmy?
00:46:13
Speaker
Neither did I. She says she unfortunately passed away in 2020, but she won a daytime Emmy for her writing role. She was on the writing team for a show called Guiding Light in 1986. Another um daytime soap. is it I kind of assumed it was from when when I read it, but she yeah she was one of the writers and won a daytime Emmy. She did occasional little bit parts of acting like this, but really she was it looked like she was a writer.
00:46:42
Speaker
Hmm, interesting. Which I didn't know at all. Man, well shoot she She was a funny, mean lady. With a random kid in the emergency room.
00:46:55
Speaker
And there's something about the way she looks as well. Like she just looks like she'd been that she'd be angry, bitter, and just not a happy person. and And calling to complain about a candy bar. She is the kind of person. Now, because of that, that segue nice is my little Gunther Central Park Award every week. None of the six really stand out for me. So for me, she's the most memorable character in this episode. Because I like the way that Chandler plays off of her.
00:47:22
Speaker
um and just, like you said, just the way she delivers that candy bar line and her kind of horrible laugh, like she plays this character so well that you can't stand her. Oh yeah, it'll be any minute now. So for that reason, yeah, she's my Gunther Central Park of the Week. Now what about you? Did anyone stand out for you?
00:47:42
Speaker
Well, George Stephanopoulos, Stephanopoulos, of course. I'm just kidding. Yeah, I know. We need to talk about him. Yeah, let's talk about him. I've got him pulled up. And that's not a good looking man to me at all.
00:47:59
Speaker
ah It's weird. I vaguely remember him like in the 90s and he was always on like Good Morning America or the talk shows, but he was the one, he was Clinton's, he was the Democratic Party's, hang on, I gotta scroll it now. He was one of the leading members of Clinton's 1992 US presidential campaign. Right.
00:48:26
Speaker
um
00:48:31
Speaker
ah I'm so glad you're here to keep me on track because this episode is literally the one with George Stephanopoulos and I skipped right over him. I'm so glad you're here. But he's just like a clean cut normal looking guy. oh So wonder obviously he doesn't appear in the show so I wondered like why why him and did they have to get his permission or was he somehow you know what happened to make them choose his name when they could have chosen anybody. Could it be anyone's pizza? Yeah, it could have been anybody. Maybe because, I mean, they were all up in the Northeast. And then here's the other question. And so they're looking out the same window where Ugly Naked Guy lives. So why is George Stephanopoulos in an apartment? Like, it's not like it's a hotel. It's not like it's... It's like, whose apartment is that?
00:49:25
Speaker
Right. And it's, yeah, they're not luxurious apartments, particularly. And if it's the woman that's there, why did they order the pizza for George Stephanopoulos and not her who actually lives in the apartment? That's a very good point. Yeah, it's an odd one because if Ross can live over there, Ross says obviously ph d is he's worked in the museum, but you stop. You wouldn't assume making a ton of money. the You know, not something that like George Stephanopoulos would be.
00:49:54
Speaker
you know, well known, well known guy. So maybe that's something to look into. I might have to look into that. Why was the episode really named after him? could It could have been absolutely anyone that got that pizza delivered.
00:50:07
Speaker
Yeah, and it's a ah so I'm looking at his Wikipedia page because you know ah if it's on the internet, it's true, right? It must be true, especially in Wikipedia. Yeah. but But all it says here is in the fourth episode of the first season, the one with George Stephanopoulos, the girls spy on him across the street after they were delivered his pizza by accident. And that's all that that says. Interesting. But he's got ties to Epstein. And he's? He's?
00:50:36
Speaker
he a pretty political guy with lots of ties to lots of people. So I wonder if he had ties to somebody, somebody in the friends universe or something, you know, so just, it's got to be a reason. Okay. So this episode came out right before he became the senior advisor. Right. Oh, wait, no, it was after because the the episode aired October 13th of 1994.
00:51:07
Speaker
which is interesting because when was the hockey game? October 20th. It was October 20th, yes. so Interesting. um ah So he was in office,
00:51:25
Speaker
White House communications director until June 7th of 1993. And then after that, he became the senior advisor to the president until 1996. Yeah, he's ah he's an important guy.
00:51:37
Speaker
Yeah, he is. Yeah, me too. I'm going to try and figure out the connection between the friend's universe and him and see if there's anyone in there. It's got to be a reason.
00:51:49
Speaker
Yes. And you're going to figure out the connection between George Stephanopoulos and... I have homework this week on it. I love that for you. Yeah. Now, was there any character, so would you say George Stephan, or was there any character that really stood out for you this week? Yeah. Yeah. I was i was being silly about that one. Yeah. Okay.
00:52:10
Speaker
ah so
00:52:14
Speaker
I don't know. Like, yeah, nobody really stood out except for Ross and his own. But I really like Chandler. He's funny. We all know he's funny, but I feel like he got more funny parts in this episode. Like from the very beginning, whenever he is, you know, I would make myself always omnipotent.
00:52:38
Speaker
and um And then the part whenever he's talking to her and and you know in the physical part. And then the timing part whenever they were talking about the guys and how you know they would be. And then they said about Chandler. And I thought it was interesting because you know I said, I don't think at the very beginning they knew that Chandler and Monica would end up together. But then it's Monica that's talking about Chandler.
00:53:08
Speaker
whenever she says, I think that could just be all a front. And then she said something and then it cut to him with all this stuff all over his face. Yes. So good. The physical comedy and all is just so good.
00:53:29
Speaker
