Thank you for joining me today! Today we will finish the book of Joshua.  We will be covering Joshua chapters 9, 10, 13-14, and 23-24. Today's  reading will tell us about the deal that God's people made with Gibeon  to not fight with them, without first asking God about it. We will talk  about the importance of keeping our promises that we make, because God also keeps OUR promises that we make in His name! This was shown when God kept the promise His people made with the Gibeonites and protected them! He even answered a special prayer Joshua  made to stop the sun and the moon in the sky! Lastly, we will read the  famous verse "Choose this day who you will serve; as for me and my  house, we will serve the Lord. Let us all be reminded to choose to serve  God today and every day.

Hi there, everyone. Welcome to Wednesday, February 12th, 2025. We are here with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching, and we're here for our daily Bible reading. If you are joining along with us, we are reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible, which is written by Karen Henley.
00:00:21
Speaker
And if you are new to this, the reason we have selected this particular version is because it is written in story format and it is written in chronological order. So this is going to give us the big picture of the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation in a storybook form and in chronological order.

You'll notice below that tab that I will have the months listed and I also have all of the recordings listed for this year in a different tab for each month. So if you are looking to watch these videos from my site, you can head over to there and that is where you will find them is under the tab for January or February readings. You may also notice a tab that's entitled after thoughts and there are a couple of videos in there where I have additional thoughts that I have recorded at the Afterwards, they're my afterthoughts. So they're just additional information that I thought about later if you are interested in viewing those. I don't have any ah often. They're not an everyday occurrence. They're just sometimes when I feel led to record additional information. But that's what you will find there and that's what they are.
00:02:11
Speaker
Otherwise, if you are listening via your favorite podcast or on YouTube or on TikTok, wherever you found me, you will find the afterthoughts video directly with the day's video. So if you see that and wonder what that is as you're going through the podcast, that is what it is.

The Gibeonites' Deception

00:02:45
Speaker
This has been a great journey so far. And right now we are in the book of Joshua and we will be completing the book of Joshua today. And we have been reading about some amazing things that God has been doing through Joshua.
00:03:01
Speaker
Let's go ahead and get going on our reading.
00:03:06
Speaker
You may remember that God ah instructed his people that when they were to take the land that they were not to make any deals with the people because they worship idols and that they would be leading Egypt, ah Israel's people.
00:03:22
Speaker
into sin, potentially. And so they had been specifically directed not to enter into any agreements with people who are close by in this land. They were however given permission that if there were other areas that they could enter into agreements, that they would first be able to approach the city and ask for peace. And if the people wanted peace, then they could become servants. And if they did not want peace, then they were to take over the city.
00:03:53
Speaker
So today we're going to be seeing ah a deal being made. And it was under false pretenses, meaning that it was done with a trick. And let's see what happens with that. Today's reading comes to us from Joshua 9, 10, 13 through 14, and 23 through 24. And then that will complete the book of Joshua today. So as always, if you feel led for more details and you are hungry for more of God's word, I always wanna encourage you to head up your big Bible and to read ah the full chapters for whatever it is that you have curiosity over.
00:04:30
Speaker
I know I had curiosity today about the deal that was struck. And so I will tell you a little bit more about that after our reading.
00:04:42
Speaker
Today's entry is entitled, Stale Bread and Worn Out Shoes. And it comes to us from Joshua 9. Now all the kings of the land heard about God's people, and the kings got together to fight God's people. But the people of Gibeon didn't want to fight, so they played a trick on God's people. They put old worn out bags onto donkeys. The men put on worn out shoes. They wore old clothes, and they carried dry, stale bread. And they went to see Joshua.
00:05:19
Speaker
They said, we come from a land far away. We wanna make a deal with you. God's people said, we don't know you. Maybe you'll live close by us. Then God wouldn't want us to make a deal with you. We'll serve you, said they told Joshua. Who are you? Asked Joshua, where do you come from?

Miraculous Battle

00:05:43
Speaker
We are from a land far away.
00:05:47
Speaker
They said, we heard about your God. So our leaders told us to come here and talk to you and make a deal with you. They told us that we should make a deal with you and see this bread was hot when we left home. But now it's dry and stale. The bags on our donkeys were new, but now they're old and worn out. We traveled so far, our clothes and shoes wore out.
00:06:14
Speaker
Some of Joshua's men took a look. They saw the old bread and the worn out bags. They could see the worn clothes, but they did not ask God about it. Then Joshua and the leaders made a deal with the men. They promised not to fight them. Three days passed. Then God's people found out that these men lived nearby.
00:06:42
Speaker
So God's people traveled to their city, but they didn't fight because they had promised not to. We won't fight them, they said, but they will have to be our servants. They'll have to carry our wood and water. So God's people kept their promise. Joshua went to the men of Gibeon. Why did you lie to us? He asked. Now you'll have to be our servants.
00:07:08
Speaker
We heard about your God, they said. And we were afraid of you, so we lied to you. Do whatever you think is right. So Joshua made them carry wood and water for God's people.
00:07:24
Speaker
Here is something amazing today. Joshua 10, 13 through 14. Sun and moon stand still.
00:07:36
Speaker
The kings of the land heard what had happened and they heard that the people from Gideon made a deal with Joshua. So the kings got together to fight Gibeon. And that's because Gibeon was an important city. Then the people of Gibeon sent a message to Joshua, come fast, save us. The kings from the hills are trying to fight us. So Joshua took his army to Gibeon. God told Joshua, don't be afraid.
00:08:05
Speaker
I'll make you win. Joshua and his army marched all night long. The kings and their armies were surprised to see God's people. And God made the king's armies get mixed up. And they began running away. God's people chased the king's armies. Then big hail stones fell from the sky. God sent hail down on the enemy armies.
00:08:31
Speaker
That day Joshua prayed, let the sun stand still. Let the moon stand still. And the sun did stand still. The moon stopped moving across the sky. The sun and moon stopped until God's people won the fight. The sun didn't move in the sky for about a day.
00:08:58
Speaker
There was never another day like that before or after. That was a day when God answered answered a special prayer. God really was fighting for his people. So Joshua won and took all the land in the hill country. Joshua gave land to the family groups of God's people. Each family group got a different part of the land.

Caleb's Claim

00:09:24
Speaker
Then Caleb went to see Joshua.
00:09:28
Speaker
He said, do you remember what God told Moses about you and me? I was 40 years old and Moses chose me to check out the land of Canaan. I came back and said, we could take the land. The other men with me were afraid, but I followed God with my whole heart. So Moses said that the land I walked on would be mine. God has kept me alive for 45 years since then.
00:09:56
Speaker
Today I'm 85 years old and I'm just as strong now as I was then. I can fight as well now as I did then. So please give me the land God promised me. Then Joshua prayed for God to bring good things to Caleb and he gave Caleb the land that God promised him. The one we will serve, Joshua 23 and 24.

Joshua's Final Words

00:10:24
Speaker
A long time passed and God's people lived in peace. Joshua grew old. Then he called the leaders together. I'm old, he said. You've seen everything God has done for you. God fought for you and pushed the nations out of this land. So be strong. Be careful. Obey everything the law tells you to do.
00:10:48
Speaker
Some other nations still live in this land. Don't worship their gods. Keep following the Lord your God. Don't marry people from other nations. If you do, God won't push them out of the land, and then these nations will trap you. I'm going to die soon, and you know that God has kept all his promises. If you don't keep your promise and obey him, he will be angry, and then you'll die.
00:11:16
Speaker
and none of God's people will be left in the land. So today, choose the one you will serve. Will you serve the gods of other nations? My family and I will not do that. We will serve God. The people said, we'll never leave God. We won't worship other gods. We will serve God too. He saved us. He did great wonders.
00:11:46
Speaker
All right, said Joshua, you know what you've said. You choose to serve God. So throw away any idols you may have and love God with your whole heart. We will serve God, said the people. We will obey him. Joshua set up a big stone under an oak tree. See this? He said, this stone will help you remember what you said. It hurt everything God told us.
00:12:15
Speaker
When Joshua was 110 years old, he died and his grave is in the hill country. And that's the end of our reading today.
00:12:29
Speaker
We had some wonderful things to read about today, didn't we? Was that incredible that God stopped the very sun and moon from moving in the sky? Wow. Only our God is capable of such an amazing feat.

Reflecting on Lessons

00:12:47
Speaker
I wanted to talk about the stale bread and worn out shoes trick. So those were the Gibeonites. They were from a very important city. It tells us called Gibeon. And they had come offering to serve Israel's people.
00:13:03
Speaker
And they were trying to be careful, but they didn't ask God about it. So the Joshua and the leaders made a promise. And when they would make a promise, they would they would essentially they would swear it in God's name. They would say, by God's name, we will not do this. So when they made that promise, God honored it.
00:13:25
Speaker
So I did some research on that. I was expecting to find that these Gibeonites were going to cause trouble for the Israelites down the line in the future. And that's not what I found actually. What I found is that the Gibeonites, God honored the promise that Israel made. The promise was made in God's name and God honored that promise. And he honored it immediately as soon as the The town of Gibeon was being attacked and they called for help from Israel. They came and God said right away, don't be afraid, you will win the fight. So God was with them. He honored that promise that the Israelites had made with them and they became servants.
00:14:12
Speaker
ah of the people and they carried wood and water. Now what I didn't know until I looked it up and read was that they actually ah became servants for the temple, for the tabernacle. And so this was, they were kind of like incorporated into this service. And so that was there ah their job, all of the Gibeonites that they were ah to serve by bringing water and wood.
00:14:42
Speaker
to the temple. And later on, even ah when King David was on the throne, the Gibeonites were brought up again and they were still being treated in such a fashion where they were honored by, that their commitment was honored, not that they were honored, but that their commitment was honored. So they essentially converted and they became ah like Rahab, where Rahab left the city of Jericho and she became one of the Israelites. She converted and God honors that. And so I thought that was really wonderful. God stopped the sun and the moon to fight for the Gibeonites. God knew that they were going to become servants for his temple. And I i just, I was so impressed by that. So what that tells me from my application is that one,
00:15:41
Speaker
ah Be careful when you make a promise that you honor it. Because when you make a promise, God honors the promise with you. So don't just make a promise and then not keep it. Because that is not what God did. God did not make that promise with the Gibeonites. The Israelite nation did, and it says they did so without asking God. But God honored their promise to not fight with them. And God extended his protection over them.
00:16:09
Speaker
And that is very powerful. So I want us to be aware of how um how important it is to keep our word. It's not just our word we're keeping. God keeps our word with us. And he does not want us to break our word.
00:16:30
Speaker
Later on, when the Gibeonites were attacked, ah King David had to ah pay for their attack ah because they they were unwri unrightfully attacked and killed, and David had to pay for that. So even then, they were still protected, even though it was far in the future.
00:16:52
Speaker
So God does not forget his promises. He does not forget our his promises to us. And it just shows again how God is so faithful to us. And we need to take that as our example to be faithful in our word as well as he is with his. So that's my big takeaway from today.

Call to Faithfulness

00:17:13
Speaker
And ah today we read the verse, you know, choose you this day who you will serve as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. So I just wanted to point that out that that is a well-known verse. And so today is where we read that. And so ah no matter how old you are, you could be six, you could be seven, you could be 10, you could be 12, you could be 30, you could be 40, you could be 50. And we are to choose who we will serve.
00:17:42
Speaker
And so i this encourages us to choose to serve God, to not serve idols, to not worship other people, to not put our trust in our faith in man and in people, but in God. And so ah today I choose the Lord and I hope that you do too.

Community and Sharing

00:18:03
Speaker
So thank you very much for reading along with us today as we have read through the book of Joshua now.
00:18:08
Speaker
and I am glad you are here whether you are watching via YouTube or TikTok or whether you are listening on YouTube Music or Amazon Music or Spotify or whatever your favorite podcasting app is. I've recently added ah the podcast last night to some additional podcasting, hosting things. I cannot remember them all, but they are a lot. So I'm trying to get them added to as many sources as possible so that we can help this event grow and spread the word about reading God's word. So if you also feel that God has lit your light, then I encourage you to click that light button. It looks like a like button with a thumbs up, but it's really a light. And let's light up the world for Jesus and for God. And let's spread the word about reading God's word.
00:18:55
Speaker
Thank you so much for sharing this and I am so glad because that's one of the ways that this is going to grow and God will lead other people to this event and I'm very happy to see that there are more of us now than there were when we started or even two weeks ago. I hope everybody has a great rest of your day and I will be here for tomorrow's reading again.
