Hustle culture is no longer the lifestyle people want. These days people are more interested in slow living because of the better quality of life. So I thought it would be interesting to talk about it as I live in one of the fast-paced cities in the US. Let's dissect why slow living is the way to go. Introduction and Personal Branding

00:00:15
Speaker
Hey guys, welcome back to Wild and Basic. If you're new here, my name is Merce. I'm a content creator, lifestyle, skincare influencer. Don't like that word, but had to put it out there. I couldn't think of another word, digital creator or something.
00:00:33
Speaker
I feel like there are times that this is so funny. I think when I was doing my taxes or I don't know, when I was doing something else, I forgot what I was doing. Maybe filing an application for like investment or something. I completely forgot what it was for. They were asking like, what was my job title? And obviously I didn't want to say influencer. I said content creator. And no, first I said digital creator. And the girl was like, what is that? I was like, oh, just put content creator.
00:01:01
Speaker
Then she's like, oh, okay. But what is that again? Like she didn't know what.
00:01:07
Speaker
It's so funny, but anyways, yeah, I hate using that word.

Exploring Slow Living

00:01:12
Speaker
Yeah, anyways, welcome guys. So today we are going to be talking about really, really popular topic. That's been probably, I feel like popular even during pandemic, but now it's just still popular, which I, I guess I thought like that, you know, will phase out and people just go back to what it was before pandemic, but I guess, you know,
00:01:33
Speaker
I guess we are in this new normal and it's like the new normal. Like we are not going back and I'm kind of happy about that. So we are going to be talking about slow living. Slow pace living is
00:01:48
Speaker
It's great. And I feel like in the past, I thought it was boring and it's like not something I would be interested in. But I think more and more, I started to think that like fast paced environment maybe is over for me.
00:02:05
Speaker
Not to say that I don't enjoy it, but I feel like I would enjoy it for me for me, maybe a day or two. Then it's like I'm good. Like I need I need I need my rest or I just need like my sanity. And I feel like you don't get that from what is it from a fast paced environment like New York City.
00:02:26
Speaker
which is something we have talked quite a lot in this podcast, New York City versus LA or just New York City Lifestyle, which we're going to get into it in a bit and talk about this today's topic and why people moving to places that the lifestyle is a lot slower pace and like people just want, I guess,

Personal Updates and Tech Purchases

00:02:45
Speaker
different things. So yeah, we're going to get into it. But before that, let's talk a little bit life update, things that happened with me. I know nobody cares.
00:02:56
Speaker
But I had some interesting things happen. Okay, so I need to just put it out here. If I don't put it out here, I don't know where else I'm going to put it out. And I'm so behind with my vlog. So just bear with me. So number one, I don't know which one I should start with because I feel like they're all kind of so unrelated with each other. But like that kind of happened with me. Number one, I got a new phone.
00:03:24
Speaker
Oh, okay. I'm not saying this. Okay. I don't know what's going on with this podcast. I'm not saying this that like to, you know, shove it in your face and be like, you are poor.
00:03:39
Speaker
I'm so sorry, I've been watching way too many TikToks. I'm not saying because of that. I am saying it because I had to do it, and also because I really wanted to try this phone anyways, but it just happened to be, and I just want to talk about it. But I just want to really clarify, put it out there before I say that I'm not saying this to shove it in your face and be like, I'm better than you, I got the new phone.
00:04:08
Speaker
No, I swear I'm not. Like, I'm poor, okay? I'm probably poorer than you, so... Anyways, I need to stop. Okay, so I got not iPhone 14, because apparently iPhone 14 sales are not doing so well. Just putting it out there. If you want to do research, it's not doing so well.
00:04:28
Speaker
but iPhone 14 pro and pro max is like they're good like they're doing pretty well so people might judge me for this but i always liked big phones even my older phone like the one that's not no longer with me it was still big i think it was like xr or something which was still big
00:04:50
Speaker
Than before that I had like 8 plus or something. I forgot. I had other things. Yes, 8 plus. And before that it was like 6 plus. I always had like pluses. Not because it was more expensive. Just saying it. Just because I just really liked big phones. I never liked it. I mean, yes, it doesn't fit in your pocket properly. It just looks so chunky when you put a case on it.
00:05:12
Speaker
But I just really liked it. I did not mind. But anyway, so that's the reason I got it, but also because I really wanted to try the Dynamic Island. If you don't know what that is, I will be terrible at explaining it. So just go on YouTube and just type Dynamic Island, iOS 16 or Dynamic Island, iPhone 14, whatever. It will show up. You will thank me later.
00:05:34
Speaker
Yeah, so I got the Pro Max and the funny thing is like I wanted a certain color, but it's like fine because I'm like, I'm going to put a case on it anyway. So why does it matter? So I wanted to get the purple and it was not available. It would be like shipped like in later November.
00:05:51
Speaker
So I just got the space black or something right from the store I picked it up But the entire reason I got this new phone anyways also because I mean I need a new phone regardless But it wasn't like as urgent I would say because I was kind of like wanting to wait and see if there were any discounts or anything coming up maybe towards the end of the year like I didn't need it desperately but Like I think two months ago or something to maybe I think two months ago. Yeah, probably
00:06:21
Speaker
my sister changed her battery on her iPhone because she had this iPhone, I think it's called XS or something. It wasn't bad, but I think her battery was like not so great. But again, like no iPhone battery is that great. I have to be honest. Like after a while, the battery just sucks, you know, like it's not great. So we have to deal with that. I'm just putting it out there. Doesn't matter. In the beginning, it's great than just, you know what it is. So her
00:06:49
Speaker
Her friend, family friend thought this was a good idea to get the iPhone battery replaced. Again, I feel like she thought this was like an Android or something. And she's like, I do this all the time. And so she got her. She made my sister get her iPhone battery replaced.
00:07:11
Speaker
And ever since then, this is like the downfall of her phone dying, essentially. So her phone essentially became like on life support. So in the beginning, it was fine, like maybe for the first months or something. Then
00:07:26
Speaker
All of a sudden it started to die all the time. Like it would be like maybe 20%, but all of a sudden it would die. Because I think the iPhone was not registering the battery. You know, even also when you go to a battery health on iPhone, it would say like the percentage or whatever. This one was saying unknown. So it's clearly some sort of a ripoff or knockoff of whatever it is.
00:07:50
Speaker
So it's not the original, which I was not expecting for 60 bucks probably. But anyway, so my sister's phone was kept dying. Literally every single time I would call her, she would have to like put her phone into like a, I mean, charge it. It was like the portable battery or something. Otherwise it would die. Like we would have like a FaceTime or just a call even.
00:08:14
Speaker
after five minutes it would just like she would just go like radio silent and I would always be like what the fuck is going on but then then she would always have like oh it's my phone so like if I ever don't answer to you just because my phone died
00:08:29
Speaker
So that's like it was very unbearable. There were times that even her phone like wouldn't even turn on and she had to respond to like messages and everything because she's at law school. So like through her computer and stuff, it was so bad. Anyways, so we decided to give my phone to her and I get myself a new phone.
00:08:52
Speaker
Again, I did not want to do this at this moment. I feel like my phone has been over two years anyways. Yes, I wanted to get a new one, but I didn't want to necessarily get it now because I wasn't desperately needed it. But yeah, that's the story of how I got my iPhone Pro Max. iPhone 14 Pro Max. We'll definitely recommend it. Bigger screen. I don't know. It's nice. I kind of like it. Would I say it's necessary?
00:09:18
Speaker
I don't know, like it's not that necessary, but camera's great. Not a big fan of the back of the camera. It really looks like gas burner. Like there's no other way for me to see it. I have to be honest, there's no other way I can see it. It literally looks like that. That's kind of it.
00:09:38
Speaker
That's my update. New iPhone 14 Pro Max. But on the plus side, there are really cool cases that is for it. So you can make it look really cool. And the whole charging thing and the dynamic island really makes up for the whole thing. And I'm so, so glad that I can finally see the battery percentage on my phone because the phone screen is so big that I can finally choose that option and I can see it.
00:10:07
Speaker
without having to touch my finger and scroll down to see what percentage is. For that, I'm forever grateful. Is my banking I'm grateful for that? Probably not.
00:10:19
Speaker
It was, even if it's the trade-in, it was about like, I think it was 800, $900. There is no way to sugarcoat this. It's not cheap. It is not cheap. I feel like in the past, if you told me that you would spend almost a grand or more than a grand for a phone, I'd be like, you're insane. That's never gonna happen. But I feel like these days,
00:10:48
Speaker
even Samsung or whatever you know like I'm not trashing them but just saying like they're pretty expensive too like if you want like basic basic that's different story but if you're a content creator or whatever you take videos like I take a lot of videos for brands and everything so I do need a good camera
00:11:07
Speaker
And on top of it, like I do emails and I do a lot of things in my phone. That's what I'm trying to say. So it does take like it's a good investment in my case. Like I'm not trying to say like, oh my God, like I'm not trying to justify the price, but I'm trying to say that like I feel like.
00:11:24
Speaker
If you want to get like a decent phone, it's going to be around seven to eight hundred dollars. There's like decent one. So I'm just trying to say it's like there's no way to justify the price. I'm not because in the past, I think I have probably spent six hundred dollars for a phone or something. And I was like, oh, my God, this is so fucking expensive. But now it's just like, wow, a grand.
00:11:51
Speaker
What I cannot justify is the fact that I can't believe it's been like 11 minutes I'm talking about this. I'm so sorry. But we cannot justify the fact that my Mac costs like, I don't know, like $1,900 or something. Again, that's insanely expensive too. Okay.
00:12:12
Speaker
But the fact that the prices is like they're so close to each other, like you can get a MacBook Air for like, I don't know, is it like it used to be, I guess, twelve hundred. I don't know the prices anymore. But I'm just saying it's so close to the price of a phone that doesn't make sense.
00:12:29
Speaker
I have to be honest, like that just doesn't make sense to Apple. I'm so sorry. I don't know who's making these prices. It doesn't make sense. But good for you. You're getting all the money. I'm not saying I'm not going to buy it. I really want to buy the new Apple Watch. I'm not buying it.
00:12:45
Speaker
But I'm just saying I really want to buy it. The design looks so good. And I don't understand. I always tell this myself. I swear this is the last thing I'm going to say. Actually, there's one more thing I will say than this. I don't understand why I have this like expensive taste because like there's they released the iPhone, not Apple Watch 8, then Apple Watch Ultra, then Apple Watch SE. Because currently I have the SE, which is like the old one, not the new SE, the old SE. And I'm forever grateful it's nice, whatever.
00:13:16
Speaker
But like, I was like, oh, maybe I can get the Apple Watch 7 or 8. But my eyes or me, I'm like, oh, the ultra, ultra looks so great. I'm like, shut up or shut up. You don't need it. It's like thousand. It's close to thousand dollars again for a fucking watch. So the fact that I have this expensive taste, I am never.
00:13:39
Speaker
I'm never going to be not poor. I feel like even the times I'm going to be rich, I'm going to be spending so much money, which I'm also trying to invest more money so that I have this lifestyle that I can sustain in the future.
00:13:55
Speaker
Anyways, I don't know where I was going with this, but that was it. Oh, one thing I'm going to mention, I feel like this is the part I should have mentioned from the very beginning, but hear me out, promise that will be the last thing I'm saying. So the new iPhone, the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Pro, so they're all eSIM. If you don't know what that is, meaning there is no SIM tray in the new iPhone, there's nothing physical per se.
00:14:23
Speaker
So, because I had the physical one right, it was still in my old phone, it was a very smooth process. It essentially transferred from my old phone to the new one, but I didn't have to do anything. It just had to enter like a couple things. It was transferring a new phone and it just did that for me.
00:14:40
Speaker
That part was really cool. And I would say the entire reason they do this is because, like, before everything was, like, in order to have multiple phone, I mean, multiple numbers or second phone, second number or something for work or something, you need to have another phone. But nowadays, because it doesn't require SIM tray and they're making the eSIM, so you can have multiple numbers in one phone.
00:15:04
Speaker
I guess that's bad for cheaters or people who are acting shady and doing other stuff, but I guess it is good if you have a business and you want to have a business number in one phone, you can have that.
00:15:15
Speaker
I'm curious to see how they're going to make that happen, to differentiate that. I would be very curious. Like, how would I know where, which number they send it to? Like, I'm very curious in that, but it's a very cool feature, ESEM. It was very, like, I was very scared. I'm like, how the fuck I'm going to do this. I really hope they don't complicate things because I was so scared that they're going to make me do the new plan. Like, they won't see me as a current customer because I'm already a T-Mobile customer.
00:15:40
Speaker
But it was a very smooth process, so 100% recommended. Everything is becoming so digital, so I'm loving it. Like, we don't need... In the future, I'm really, really hoping that we never, ever have to even plot our credit cards, as much as I love using the credit cards or holding it. I don't want that, and also on top of it, I don't want to carry my wallet.
00:16:02
Speaker
The entire reason these days I carry my wallet, mostly because now I have a car and I need to carry my license all the time. That and I really hoping that the license goes into Apple Wallet, which it's already happening in a bunch of states. But yeah, that's happening and cash is going extinct. I hope not in Europe probably because it's not a cutting edge place. But yeah, I feel like this was like a update about Apple products.
00:16:30
Speaker
Welcome to my podcast, guys. Today we are talking about Apple. OK, anyways, so on that note, let's go into today's episode.

Redefining Slow Living

00:16:39
Speaker
So what does it mean? Slow living.
00:16:44
Speaker
Slow living means doesn't mean you're lazy. It has nothing to do with that. It just means that you prioritize life over work. I know I mentioned this quite a lot, like the comparing lifestyle from Europe and other countries is that like because in Europe, yes, people do work and shit, but they prioritize their life and they are just that work-life balance over work. Because I feel like in America, we are so workaholics and we just want to work and do things.
00:17:14
Speaker
I'm great like we have this passion and we have this entrepreneur a little well that worth please ignore that uh some reason my I cannot say that today I think I just had too much coffee and that cold brew is really hitting pretty hard
00:17:30
Speaker
So thank you Blue Stone Lane for that. They're not our sponsor today, but just putting it out there. Thank you. Yeah. So I think that's the reason it is important to sometimes just look at from outer perspective and see what you value the most. And not to say that people who have this slow living space or so living practices or just that lifestyle that they achieve a lot, they achieve less or they make less money because they don't.
00:18:00
Speaker
I think a trick is to work less, make more money, also just be happy and stuff.
00:18:08
Speaker
And I feel like sometimes we resonate that with having a faster pace and like just doing many, many things so we can provide for ourselves or so we can be happy. And I think I compare this with New York City a lot because I talk about it quite a lot. I know saying that like how toxic the environment and everything is. But it's just like I feel like if you want to be hustling and you want to get into this hustle culture and like learn about it and just like
00:18:37
Speaker
get it out of your system because it's not a constant thing that you could be doing for 10 years for 20 years because it's like one of those things you know like how you see with celebrities or just stars that like they keep producing albums like one year after another another another then they just stop or they just go like radio silent
00:18:59
Speaker
which is normal because they need a break they cannot just keep pumping things because they're not a machine and same thing for everyone and including myself that we can't potentially do like live this lifestyle forever I mean yeah some people can but again not healthy do you want to be having this
00:19:18
Speaker
Fast-paced lifestyle and hustling or just doing many many things that leaves you tired constantly That you live in this chaotic environment Then you are in your 40s like I wouldn't want that I even want that earlier. I just feel like I got that out of my system and
00:19:35
Speaker
So, and I feel like, not just me, a lot of people, especially my generation, millennials and everything, it's just like, people are like, they're leaving New York City. And not just I'm saying New York City, they're living a lot of places. Obviously, first thing is the cost. Cost definitely plays a big, big role, but also on top of it is just like the lifestyle and they want more things. And I feel like that's important to consider.
00:20:03
Speaker
and people are moving to the south or midwest. A lot of people from California are moving to Texas and a lot of people from New York City are moving to Florida. So it's a style, the choices that's going on. And I think the biggest reason obviously is the cost.
00:20:20
Speaker
But also other thing is that like, this is like advantages of the slow living is that like, you have more things to do. And that's why I'm going to get into it now. Here are some few points. I did organize it. I'm not going to go all over it, all over the place. So first thing is the schedule. So I feel like when you're in these fast places, obviously like San Francisco is pretty fast, like fast paced and like New York City is pretty fast paced. I don't know where other places like, I guess LA could be that too.
00:20:50
Speaker
but still like slower pace, I would say. There is no such thing as like, you're not going to have like back to back meetings. You're not going to be eating your lunch over a meeting. Like, again, those are something that you could do once in a while. But I feel like that adds, you don't realize how much pressure or just toll that puts on you. I have to be honest, I used to think that that was something that that would help me so much. And like, I need to get into that, like,
00:21:20
Speaker
groove and like just that hustle culture and just being that environment. It's going to teach me a lot, but I just realized it puts so much toll on my health and I was probably not getting enough sleep and everything. And I think some nice people don't realize it and this is something that I'm just putting it out there. Maybe it's just me.
00:21:37
Speaker
Having

Health and Lifestyle Benefits of Slow Living

00:21:38
Speaker
those back-to-back meetings too is like you have to prepare those meetings. Unless you are like the CEO or whatever the big shop person you are, you still need to prepare yourself to what you're going to be talking about it or like what the meeting is about. So it's like having those things back-to-back and like you have to prepare it probably the night before. And which means some of them could be like long decks or like these like five, 10 pages at least of decks like the documents that like you have to go through.
00:22:06
Speaker
It's quite a lot and your brain is constantly working, which you're supposed to get enough sleep and shit. So I'm saying like it's quite a lot and puts a lot of stress and on top of it is like if you have a meeting, you have to rush between to get the lunch or something that you need to eat or you don't have time and you're eating your lunch over a meeting or you're eating your lunch very late.
00:22:26
Speaker
Again, very bad for your health. You don't, even if you're young, I feel like you can, again, I'm just, that's what I'm trying to say. I feel like you can do this for a bit, but you cannot, you cannot do this constantly. It's not the lifestyle you want to live. It's not okay. And I did this for a while as I was also like doing my master's
00:22:45
Speaker
It was very challenging for me because yes, I had so many advantages of having this flexible job as a content creator, but I still had many times that it overlapped and I had to go to an event or I had to do a shoot and stuff like that. It overlapped at time to time. I barely had any food the entire day. I probably had like a protein bar or something or iced coffee to go get through the day.
00:23:09
Speaker
I'm just saying it's not healthy at all. That is not good for you. As much as you think that your body handles it, there are going to be consequences in the future that could be very permanent. I'm just saying. So you need to prioritize that. So having a less hectic schedule is definitely going to be so much more beneficial for your health, but also just for yourself.
00:23:37
Speaker
Another thing is like having time for hobbies. I feel like this is one thing is also that like this slow living again, it's because you're not lazy. You just have less things to do, but you're still doing the same things or getting the same money. You have time for hobbies. You can.
00:23:55
Speaker
I don't know, play piano or you can learn that new sport of yours that you wanted to try or just go back to practicing the sport that you really liked. Like I really want to get back into tennis, but also just learn golfing. I have never tried golfing. I want to try it.
00:24:12
Speaker
I just feel like that's something that I don't have the luxury at the moment, also because it's just so expensive to join a club in New York City who has those facilities. Just saying that will cost me arm and leg and just not worth it, honestly. But I would be so worried about how I'm going to pay this.
00:24:31
Speaker
that club membership fee. Just saying, like it's not worth it. But I'm just saying, like, I feel like when you have the time, you will also have the money for it because it's not going to be as expensive when you're in these slow living places or just practicing slow living. Again, you cannot practice slow living in fast paced environment. That's why I'm saying it's more related to slow living environments.
00:24:52
Speaker
So you will have time for hobbies and hobbies makes us who we are and also just like gives us that gives us that serotonin that we don't get maybe on a regular basis and we kind of clear our head and that's so so beneficial that I don't think we think about it enough.
00:25:12
Speaker
Another thing is having a healthy sleeping schedule. This is something I feel like a lot of people underestimate. And even myself, I feel I'm so glad, like that's one reason I feel like I'm so obsessed with Apple, my Apple watch and like that health thing, health app overall, because I see so much data from my sleeping habits and the days that I'm tired. When I look back to see how many hours of sleep I got, I can justify like, why am I tired?
00:25:40
Speaker
Anytime I get less than 6 hours of sleep, I'm not like, not productive, but towards like the midday, probably 3-4, like I start yawning, like I'm tired because I did not get enough sleep. And also, getting less than 7-8 hours of sleep is not good for you.
00:26:02
Speaker
And over time, apparently this is like according to research that it will cause some memory issues. You will start forgetting things over time, not right away. But that's why it's so important to prioritize your sleep. And when you have this still living schedule and everything, you have, you can have healthy sleep schedule and you can sleep at least eight hours a day. You don't need so many hours, just eight hours a day. You know, like I meant like at night, I didn't mean like naps.
00:26:31
Speaker
that will be really, really helpful for you and for your health. I feel like that's why I'm saying that I think money is important and career is important. But remember, you're not going to have any of those things if your health is not in place. Like if you are not healthy, you're not going to be able to achieve any of those things or just enjoy them at all. So just remember that.
00:26:55
Speaker
And last thing, this is something I feel like kind of controversial to some people is that like, I think that especially in like New York, like you will see people have like two jobs, or three jobs, like they have multiple jobs or they have side hustles and things.
00:27:11
Speaker
Um, main reason is they have it is because they need to make the ends meet. They need to keep, keep afloat, keep themselves afloat. And that's okay, you know, because cost of living is so insane in New York and it's constantly increases, but like things never get better.
00:27:28
Speaker
That's something I always tell myself. I'm like, what is happening? Like everything increases, prices are increasing. I know inflation overall is just not happening everywhere, but New York has always been expensive and the cost of living is never like matches up to the standards of what you should be paying for. Like amount of money you would be paying for for 3K or whatever, that would be the basic apartment that comes with no amenities. Just putting it out there. Just remember that.
00:27:56
Speaker
Anyway, so I'm just saying that people have these because they want to make ends make ends meet and they just don't have the
00:28:07
Speaker
option to not to have the other job. But when you live in these places, you can have one job, don't have to worry about other things. Yes, you can have a side hustle. I think side hustles are great, but also you have to have an end goal for these side hustles. Like, why are you doing this? That's something I can talk about in the future for sure. something I realize a lot and hopefully I will realize in the future more. I haven't seen you from this one YouTuber that I follow. I love her so much, like her lifestyle and everything. She has literally moved across. Oops, that was my phone dropping. I propped it against my Fiji water. Okay, back to the topic. So she's this YouTuber. She has like half a million followers or something.

She lived in many places. She lived in New York City before, then she moved to Texas, then she moved to California, San Diego, then she moved back to New York City because she's like, oh, New York City content always does well. But then she realized cost of living is so expensive, that's for sure. But again, this girl makes a lot of money. So just putting it out there. It's not the issue, it's the money.

I think that a lot of times people don't realize this. And that's the last thing I want to say it to conclude this slow living practices is that like especially a place like in New York or San Francisco, even people still make a lot of money. I'm not saying they don't. But the issue is that because the costs, cost of just living is so much that it doesn't matter how much money you are making unless you're making millions. Hopefully you're not spending millions. You don't have a lot left.

you're constantly worrying about the money because it's not that like you don't have money to spend. It's more like you have money to spend, but you also need money to save and put it aside or just think about your future. You don't have that luxury when you live in these places.

And she moved to, I think, Connecticut or something, again, not the place that I would see myself going, but she moved there and she travels to New York City whenever she wants with Metro North, which is convenient, but she saved so much money. But she also has her, I mean, has heard this sanity away from the crowd, away from this, I don't know,

sirens and cops sound every fucking day, she's living her life. And if she wants the chaotic style back, she can take the train and just leave that just for a day or two, day or a couple of hours, then go back to her, I don't know, like her happy place.
00:30:58
Speaker
I'm just saying, I feel like people always resonate that like or say that like, oh my God, it's because you cannot afford it. That's why you're moving. Not true. Not true. Sometimes you you value your sanity more than the money or this place that you're living in because people fantasize about all these fast paced places. But

Truth is, over time, your health, your mental health, or just like your sanity comes first above anything else. And that's why people move to these places. And I just want to talk about it, about slow living. And I think that's something that's going to be happening a lot more. And I would be curious to see how it will be next year.

I'm not a financial expert, but they're predicting recession and things becoming even worse for 2023. I feel like, yeah, the big cities are not going to be doing so well. I'm not trying to bad mouth anything, but I really think that that's why people are also going to be moving to other places to keep the cost down because to save more their future.
