Today learned about a shepherd boy named David. God used him to do an amazing thing – defeat Goliath!

Parents, keep the conversation going this week with your family! Here are some ideas:

*(ages 2-4) Talk about Goliath’s enormous size! Find something that is 9 feet tall, or use a measuring tape to show how big he was. Ask, “Who was David?” “Who was Goliath?” “What did God do for David?”

*(ages 5-9) Talk about what David must have been feeling during the battle. Ask, “Would you have been afraid to face Goliath?” “How did David who faith in God?” “Are there any people that scare you? “What can we do about that together?”

*(ages 10-12) Talk about “David versus Goliath” moments in modern times – like in sports, for example. It’s a scenario when an underdog team faces a seemingly unbeatable opponent. We love to cheer for the underdog and see unlikely victories! Ask, “What does it take for a ‘David’ to beat a ‘Goliath’?” “Do you think your faith is a strong as David’s? Why or why not?”

One last thing! This week Hannah asked, "What could you do if you were as brave as David?". We would love to hear your ideas! Simply record a voice memo and send it in a text to 636-280-5433. You may even be featured in an upcoming episode. *By sending in a voice memo, you’re providing consent for your minor’s voice to be on the podcast*

Prayer Practices and Flexibility

00:00:28
Speaker
But first, last week Miss April asked you the question, Where is your favorite place to pray? Here's what you told us. In my bedroom because it's quiet and I can focus.
00:00:39
Speaker
In my room so I can play while I do it. In my bedroom because it's quiet and i can focus on what I'm saying. I love those answers because we can pray anywhere.
00:00:52
Speaker
Talking to God is so cool because there really aren't very many rules. You don't have to have your eyes closed or your hands folded or your head bowed to pray because God is listening. No matter where you are, no matter what you're doing,
00:01:07
Speaker
Have you ever had it where you're trying to talk to someone, but they're not really paying attention? Like if your teacher is trying to help someone else or your mom is busy or your dad is working and you just want their attention, you just want to talk to them and share with them.
00:01:21
Speaker
Well, that never happens with God. i don't understand it, but he is so powerful and he is everywhere so he can hear everyone at once. It kind of blows my mind, but it is so cool to know that no matter where I am, God is listening to me pray.
00:01:38
Speaker
So I'm so glad that you guys are praying to him too. He loves to hear from us.

Introduction to David the Shepherd

00:01:43
Speaker
Today, we're going hear some interesting facts about shepherds.
00:01:49
Speaker
It's time for Shephote Pass. My name is Brady and I'm six years old. Shepherds are people that take care of sheep. Shepherds have to fight wild animals to keep their sheep safe.
00:02:03
Speaker
Shepherds used to play instruments and make music. There is a shepherd in our story today, but I thought I'd have a little fun and tell it a little bit differently. So here it goes.
00:02:15
Speaker
The story of our shepherd boy, David, but with a rhyme. I bet you guys are familiar with rhyming words. Listen for these rhyming words in today's story. God's people faced a mighty foe. It was the Philistines. Oh no.
00:02:33
Speaker
Among them stood Goliath, big and tall, a giant so strong he scared them all. Nine feet tall, he made them freeze.
00:02:43
Speaker
The army quaked down on their knees. Each day he would shout so big and loud, come fight me now. He mocked the crowd, but all God's people shook with fear. No one even dared to take a step too near.
00:03:00
Speaker
But God had planned great surprise to show his power before their very eyes.

David's Acts of Bravery

00:03:07
Speaker
You see, David was a shepherd boy. He was brave and strong. He cared for his father's sheep and watched them all day long.
00:03:15
Speaker
Once, a lion came to steal a lamb, but David stood his ground. And even when a bear came creeping in, he chased it right back down. So David's brothers were soldiers, and one day his dad said, go see how your brothers are today.
00:03:31
Speaker
They're fighting in the battle, and take them some food along the way. David got there and asked, how goes the fight? Are we winning? Are you all right? His brothers sighed and shook their heads. We cannot fight. Our hearts feel dread.
00:03:47
Speaker
But David stood and raised his chin. With God's had great help, I know we'll win. I will fight the giant strong and tall because God is greater than them all.
00:04:00
Speaker
He didn't wear a sword or shield, no armor strong to guard him in the field. Instead, he reached down to the ground and picked up five smooth stones that he found.
00:04:11
Speaker
With just his sling clutched firm and tight, he stepped up ready for the fight. The giant laughed and shook his head. You send a boy, soon you'll be dead.
00:04:23
Speaker
But David stood so brave and true. I fight for God, not just for you. You come with swords and spears so tall, but God will help and I'll make you fall.
00:04:37
Speaker
So he placed a stone inside his sling and swung it around with one quick swing. The stone flew fast, straight to its mark. It struck the giant clear and sharp.
00:04:49
Speaker
Goliath fell down with a thud, defeated by the boy who stood not with his strength, but God's alone. The battle's victory was shown.

Lessons on Facing Fears

00:05:00
Speaker
So when you face a fearsome fight, remember, David trusted in what was right.
00:05:06
Speaker
With God beside you, strong and near, you too can stand with faith and not with fear. So let's get to the point. God helped David be brave. God makes me brave too.
00:05:19
Speaker
Today with your family, chat about this question. What would you do if you were as brave as David? Would you fight a giant like he did? Maybe there's some other things that feel like giants in your life.
00:05:33
Speaker
Maybe something cool or maybe something scary. Talk about it together and then I would love to hear what your family comes up with. So tell us what you talk about by recording a voice memo on your phone.
00:05:44
Speaker
Text it to us to the number 636-280-5433. the most important part, friends, don't forget, god loves you with a great big love
