Today we are learning about the Holy Spirit. Parents, want to keep talking? Here are some ideas:

Ask: What did God give his people? (the Holy Spirit to live inside them) Who can receive the Holy Spirit? (Everyone who believes in God) The Holy Spirit gave Jesus’ disciples the power to speak in other languages. Teach your child a few words in another language. (ages 2-5)

This chapter of The Story says Jesus’s followers had hearts that were glad and honest and true. How do you think they showed that? Talk a little bit about being glad, honest and true. If you could always live that way, how do you think people would look at you? (ages 6-9)

As faith grew in the early church, so did persecution. Peter and John were beaten and arrested. Stephen was stoned to death. Why didn’t Christ’s followers just give up and hide? Why do you think faith thrives when there is persecution? Do you think being a Christian is too easy where you live? What’s the hardest part? (ages 10-12)

One last thing! This week April asked, “What do you want people to KNOW about Jesus?”. Simply record a voice memo and send it in a text to 636-280-5433. You may even be featured in an upcoming episode. *By sending in a voice memo, you’re providing consent for your minor’s voice to be on the podcast*

The Disciples and the Holy Spirit in Jerusalem

00:01:16
Speaker
In France, it's called pumplemousse rose. I love saying that one.
00:01:22
Speaker
People throughout the world have different words for the same thing because people speak different languages. It's so cool to learn a different language because you can understand and talk to so many more people.
00:01:34
Speaker
The disciples were in Jerusalem, and people from 15 different countries had come to town to celebrate a holiday. It was exciting to have so many different people around. Many people were speaking different languages.
00:01:47
Speaker
There were so many different languages spoken, the disciples were not able to understand everyone. They wanted to talk to the people, but many people could not understand them. When the people gathered together to worship, the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples.
00:02:03
Speaker
Before Jesus had gone up into heaven, he had told his friends that he would send the Holy Spirit to them. This was it. A sound like a loud rushing wind filled the building.
00:02:14
Speaker
Something that looked like flames danced on the heads of each person in the room. Immediately, the disciples were able to speak in many different languages so that every person could understand that Jesus was their Savior.

Significance of Pentecost

00:02:28
Speaker
Wow! Can you imagine instantly knowing how to speak a different language? God's Spirit created this miracle so that every person could hear the message.
00:02:40
Speaker
Jesus died but was raised to new life. He is in heaven with God, and he has sent his Holy Spirit so that you can know and love him. He is your Lord. He is your Savior.
00:02:53
Speaker
The people listened carefully to the disciples. They loved learning about all of the wonders and miracles Jesus had done while he was on earth. They began to ask, what does this mean?
00:03:04
Speaker
What should we do? Peter said, tell God that you are sorry for the bad things you have done. Be baptized so that you are forgiven. God will give you the gift of the Holy Spirit.
00:03:17
Speaker
The people listened. 3,000 people were baptized that day. This event was called Pentecost. Can you say that word? Pentecost.
00:03:28
Speaker
It was so special because people came from different places, spoke different languages, wore different clothes, but they came together as a family. They loved each other.

Impact of the Holy Spirit on Believers

00:03:38
Speaker
They shared meals together and prayed together. They took care of each other.
00:03:43
Speaker
This is what God wants. He wants people who believe in him to truly love each other. The Holy Spirit lives inside us. God's Spirit gives us peace.
00:03:54
Speaker
It gives us courage to love people and to help others know about God. God's Spirit helps us forgive people so that we can keep loving. God's Spirit is powerful too.
00:04:05
Speaker
It can completely change people's lives.

Saul's Conversion to Paul

00:04:08
Speaker
While the disciples and new believers were excitedly spreading the good news about Jesus, there was a man named Saul who was trying to stop them.
00:04:17
Speaker
Saul did not believe in Jesus, and he did not like anyone who did. He went from town to town finding people who loved Jesus and sent them to jail. The Christians were terrified of Saul.
00:04:29
Speaker
One day as Saul was traveling, a bright light flashed and knocked Saul to the ground. He heard a voice say, Saul, Saul, why are you being so mean to me? Who are you? Saul cried.
00:04:43
Speaker
i am Jesus, the one you were trying to hurt. Now go into the city and you will be told what you must do. do Saul struggled to get on his feet. When he opened his eyes, he realized that he was blind.
00:04:56
Speaker
He couldn't see at all. Friends helped him get to town. He prayed and tried to imagine what Jesus might want from him. God sent a man named Ananias to speak to Saul.
00:05:10
Speaker
Saul, the Lord sent me here. He is the one who appeared to you on the road. He wants you to be able to see again and to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Ananias placed his hands on Saul's face.
00:05:23
Speaker
Immediately scaly scabs fell off Saul's eyes and he could see again. Ananias taught Saul everything about Jesus. He met other disciples in the area and finally understood the love of God.
00:05:37
Speaker
Saul was baptized. He was so completely changed in his heart, he decided to change his name to Paul. The people he had once hated, he now loved.

Guidance of the Holy Spirit

00:05:48
Speaker
The Holy Spirit had made him a new person. Paul wanted to tell everyone about Jesus. So let's get to the point. God gives his people the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can live inside me too.
00:06:02
Speaker
God's Spirit is always with us. We are never alone. The Holy Spirit guides us and helps us tell other people about God.
