Today we are learning about the last things Jesus did on earth to show his great love for us! Parents, want to keep talking? Here are some ideas:

Ask: What happened to Jesus in this Bible story? (Jesus had dinner with his friends, prayed in a garden and died on a cross) Why did Jesus die? (He died for our sins) How did Jesus show his love for us? (By dying for our sins) Sing Jesus Loves Me (ages 2-5)

If you didn’t know how it was going to turn out, this would be the saddest chapter of The Story. A lot of terrible things happened to Jesus. He was arrested, his friends let him down, and he was beaten and killed. When Jesus asked his disciples to pray for him, they fell asleep instead. Talk about a time that your friends let you down. Why is it so hard to stay awake sometimes when you’re praying at night? Will Jesus ever let you down? Why? (ages 6-9)

In a poignant act of service, Jesus washes the disciples’ feet at the Last Supper. He was the ultimate leader and the ultimate servant. What most surprises you about Jesus washing his disciples’ feet? Do you think it is important for leaders to show they love and care for the people they’re leading? What are some other ways that Jesus showed the disciples that he loved them? (ages 10-12)

One last thing! This week April asked, “What would you like to SAY to Jesus?”. Simply record a voice memo and send it in a text to 636-280-5433. You may even be featured in an upcoming episode. *By sending in a voice memo, you’re providing consent for your minor’s voice to be on the podcast*

Jesus' Final Acts of Love

00:00:19
Speaker
I'm Miss April, and today we are learning about the last things Jesus did on earth to show His great love for us.
00:00:27
Speaker
Last episode I asked, what is your favorite thing about being a kid? Here is what you told us. Learning stuff. Learning stuff. Great answers, kids.
00:00:38
Speaker
We are now going to hear from an awesome kid with some super fun facts about Passover.
00:00:46
Speaker
It's time for some fun facts. Passover is a special holiday when people remember how God rescued his people from a hard life in Egypt. At Passover, families eat a special meal together.
00:00:58
Speaker
Passover is a celebration of God's goodness to his people. Jesus was loved by many, many people during his time on earth.

Significance of Passover and Last Supper

00:01:06
Speaker
His disciples adored him. He was so good at loving them and helping them understand the world better.
00:01:13
Speaker
Crowds of people had watched him perform miracles and had learned so much from the stories he shared. But not everyone loved Jesus. Some people were confused by what he said.
00:01:24
Speaker
The leaders of the church were angry that he was calling himself the Son of God and that so many people were following him. Jesus knew that it was time for his ministry and his time on earth to be over.

Predictions of Betrayal and Denial

00:01:37
Speaker
Every year, the Jewish people had a Passover meal, remembering God's goodness to them. Jesus and his 12 disciples were gathered around the table, and Jesus told his friends that it would be their last meal together.
00:01:49
Speaker
Hard times were coming soon. Jesus took a loaf of bread, blessed it, and shared it with his friends. He told them that the bread was like his own body that would be given for them. "'Eat this to remember me,' he said.
00:02:04
Speaker
Jesus took a cup of wine, blessed it, and shared it with the disciples. "'This cup of wine is a reminder of my promise to be your Savior,' he said." What Jesus said next was shocking.
00:02:17
Speaker
One of you will turn against me and will give me to my enemies.

Arrest and Denial of Jesus

00:02:22
Speaker
The disciples were upset. Is it me? Each one asked. I would never do that, Peter protested.
00:02:30
Speaker
Jesus said, Peter, i am sorry to tell you that before morning, you will tell people that you don't know me three times. Ouch. Even though Peter loved Jesus, he made mistakes.
00:02:44
Speaker
That's just like us. We might love God very much, but we do things that are wrong. We need to be forgiven often for the things that we do. Poor Peter would soon learn that he desperately needed God's forgiveness.
00:03:00
Speaker
Late that night, Jesus went to a garden to pray. He asked God to give him courage. Some angry men showed up with Jesus' disciple, Judas. Judas greeted Jesus with a kiss, which was a signal to the leaders that this was the person they wanted to arrest.
00:03:16
Speaker
Judas was the disciple who had turned against Jesus. The police took Jesus away. All of the disciples were in a panic. Peter wondered, what are these soldiers going to do to Jesus?
00:03:28
Speaker
Where are they taking my Lord? The soldiers pushed Jesus through a gate and into a courtyard and Peter followed behind so that he might see what was happening. A girl recognized Peter.
00:03:39
Speaker
You're with Jesus, she said. No, no, I don't even know that man, Peter lied. The soldiers began making fun of Jesus and hitting him. One of the soldiers said to Peter, aren't you one of his disciples?
00:03:53
Speaker
I don't know what you're talking about, he said. Later, another soldier said to Peter, I saw you in the garden with Jesus. You are one of his disciples. Peter said, not me.
00:04:04
Speaker
As soon as he said these words, a rooster crowed his morning call. Peter remembered Jesus's words. You will deny me three times before morning.

Crucifixion and Sacrifice for Humanity's Sins

00:04:15
Speaker
Peter cried and cried, being so disappointed in himself. Friends, have you ever been disappointed in yourself? Have you ever said something and then thought, ugh, why did I say that?
00:04:29
Speaker
Have you ever felt badly about the way you treated someone? We all make mistakes. We sin, and just like Peter, we need forgiveness. Jesus was sentenced to die.
00:04:42
Speaker
He was beaten, spit on, and made fun of. He was whipped and forced to carry a heavy wooden cross to the place where he would die. Some people in the crowd yelled at him and wanted this to happen to him.
00:04:55
Speaker
They didn't believe he was the Son of God. Other men and women cried and watched in horror because they knew that Jesus had never done anything wrong. Jesus was nailed to a cross.
00:05:08
Speaker
Some people wondered why he didn't perform a miracle and get himself down from that cross. But Jesus was there to die for sins. He knew that all people needed God's forgiveness, and this was the way to forgive everyone.
00:05:23
Speaker
Jesus sadly suffered for hours. The sun stopped shining and darkness covered the earth. Jesus cried out, it is finished. And he died. Jesus's friends took his body and buried it in a tomb.
00:05:36
Speaker
They cried for him and prayed together. But Jesus had one more amazing miracle to accomplish. So let's get to the point. Jesus died for my sins.
00:05:47
Speaker
Because of his love for me, i am forgiven. Jesus suffered on the cross and died so that we can be forgiven for our sins. He took the punishment for us. He could only do this because he dearly loves us.
