Podcast Introduction

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Palace Doncast, podcast, I mean, brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I must have Palace's Monday trip to play podcaster overs on my mind already. With me today is Alex Waite. Alex, do you have that Friday feeling?
00:00:28
Alex
uh yeah slowly getting there joe i've got a bit of work to finish after we've recorded tonight um and yeah i said to you a minute ago i'm playing golf tomorrow which i'm really excited about although it's been like sunny all week down here um and now it looks like it's gonna rain and like s sleep even maybe so the golf gods are not with me mate so i'm relying on palace to to pick me up this weekend instead
00:00:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, low visibility, you told me before you haven't played in a while, so low visibility might come into your favour if you accidentally hurl the golf club through someone's window in the car, but...
00:01:05
Alex
true and if it gets too bad we can just you know leave on the night pole and go to the pub
00:01:09

The perfect end. Perfect end to gave a game ago

Weekend Plans and Weather Concerns

00:01:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
for that. ah Today, we will be trying to forget that the weekend exists and turn our attention to Pallas' FA Cup third round trip to Doncaster's Eco Power Stadium next Monday night. We will start with some team news headlight game. So, Decoré and Riad, of course, remain injured. And there are now doubts over Richards, Klein, and Inketia.
00:01:14
Alex
yeah
00:01:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Eze has also confirmed to be an absentee. He's been given a week's rest.

FA Cup Match Preview

00:01:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's been playing through a foot injury for a little while now, so that might be for the best. But does any of that concern you, Alex? Do you think any of that will cause glass to some serious headaches going into the Doncaster game?
00:02:04
Alex
ah Yeah I mean it's not ideal preparation because with Eze out and Unketia potentially out that's too well Unketia would have come in for Eze is a not a like-for-like but an attacking option um so I think it kind of leaves the door open for Romain Eze to come in um and I think in some ways it's kind of a godsend because this is a game you know he's used to championship football obviously with Millwall so this is a game where I think he could actually flourish the kind of perhaps more physical side of it um you know probably being tightly marked by Doncaster defenders um and I think he'd be kind of used to that
00:02:52
Alex
um You know, she used to go into, with ah with all respect, the Doncaster, like, smaller grounds and playing in those kind of host more more hostile environments. So I think it would, yeah, although obviously we'd love to see Eze and Ninketia playing, I think itll it will give Eze an opportunity.
00:03:10
Alex
um I can't see, maybe Davini might start as well, um which again, like it'd be great exposure for him to come in. um Yeah, so that's kind of like the attacking options, um which I'm not as worried about as I was when I first saw that Eze wasn't going to be playing. um I think the other end of the pitch is is perhaps more concerning because obviously now are only two senior centre backs are Mark Gahey and Lacroix with um Richards out. It's a bit of a an issue. So what Glazen's done in the past is obviously play Lerma at centre back, but I hate Jefferson Lerma as a centre back. He's so clunky there. Like he's just, he plays everyone on side. Like he gets in the wrong positions.
00:04:04
Alex
He's a great player, so reliable, but he's not a centre back. So yeah, I'm not sure what will happen there. um But yeah, I mean, if that does happen, then again, Adam Wharton might come into midfield.
00:04:19
Alex
which I don't know whether this would be the best game for him to come back in because of that physicality that we're going to kind of expect. um So yeah, I think that's the kind of like the issues are in defense more so and then that might worry me more than our attacking options. um But we'll see what glasn's got up his sleeve like.
00:04:39
Alex
he is um he iss a sort of no panic kind of manager. So if he plays the youngsters, they'll have full confidence going out onto the pitch, I'm sure.

Team Selection and Lineup Strategy

00:04:48
Alex
But um yeah, there's a couple of question marks. Yeah, we'll we'll see what happens on Monday.
00:04:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Ursa is sort of the one positive within, you're right, it's concerning any kind of defence of absence for Pallas at the moment, given how thin they've become in that area. I guess the one, it's not a positive to take, exactly, but Richard's potential absences from illness which he usually hope means he'll be back fairly quickly. I mean but it does expose the broader problem of as you say only having three recognized
00:05:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
senior centre backs available when you play three at the back, you're always kind of on on a little bit of a knife edge. I think it's a real shame for Nketia, as you say, it would have been a good chance for him to build up his confidence of seeing him score in the League Cup.
00:05:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know how many chances he's going to get to start games because he maybe we could have even started a game up front in this one and in the league with Mateta's current form and I don't see him getting many more chances so list this probably was one of the key opportunities. I don't think he's confirmed out in kensya he's like rolled his ankle in training and they'll see so it could still be the case that he comes in and is able to play and you know I hope for his sake that he can. It sort of touched upon a few potential ideas there Alex but are there any sort of players, positions, systems you'd like to see can ask to try out here or any players who think have a real point to prove and have an opportunity to make their mark in this one
00:06:42
Alex
um yeah I think potentially Camarda, if he plays, I think he probably will play um because of those attacking absences. I think he's he's a player that he played quite well against Man United, looked quite tidy, got into a couple of good positions um and yeah looked a lot more assured than he has in the past.
00:07:05
Alex
um And I think this could be a real game for him to kind of take control of the game and play like the player we know he is. um ah ah I do expect him to start in some capacity, whether that's in the central midfield role alongside probably Will Hughes, or a bit further forward to replace Eze. I do expect Kamada to start. um But yeah, hes he he is like the big sort of enigma of Halis at the moment in terms of like he's one of our highest earners.
00:07:38
Alex
um We all have seen the YouTube clips of him like scoring amazing goals and like, yeah, obviously under Glazner at Frankfurt, he was great. um And he's so he' shown like glimpses of that this season, like against Villa in the cup, he was amazing for one half. But yeah, he's just, it's just a frustration of like, you know how good someone is.
00:08:04
Alex
But when they just consistently don't, they're consistently like five out of ten every week, or like four out of ten. You're sort of like, whats what's going on? Like, where is this player? And Glazner obviously trusts him, so he keeps playing him. um And I think this is a, you know, like players who have played at the highest level, like Commander, should be able to turn up at Doncaster and dictate the game.

Player Focus: Kamada and Franca

00:08:27
Alex
um And again, that's no disrespect, but they're two leagues below us. And it's like, he should be able to take this game by the scruff of the neck, be the playmaker, you know, um bring them on to us and yeah, create these gaps in that space.
00:08:42
Alex
But here's so here's someone who I'd like to to see show up at the Eco Power Stadium on Monday, um out of out of all the team, really.
00:08:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
can
00:08:52
Alex
Like youngsters like SA and, you know, Deveni, if they play, you you sort of give them a free hit. So if they don't form well, you're like, okay, it's their first game or like, you know, one of their first starts of the season. You give them a free pass, but Commander's like, it's time to so up his game now, I think.
00:09:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
I agree. I think Kamal is the one that I had sort circled also as like, this is a real a real opportunity for him to make his mark. As you say you never really know he's a victim of his own versatility and that might be a little bit why he's struggling to get properly settled into the team. You don't know if he's going to play in one of those attacking midfield slots or one of those centimetre positions. I think if he plays centimetre as you say he would be able to dictate the game
00:09:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I kind of would prefer him to play further forward, because he'd be able to dictate the game, but it would be like, so i think well you whoop, you're like, really trying to win the midfield battle again against probably Doncaster, and it's just what you'd expect from him.
00:09:49
Alex
Yeah. yeah
00:09:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Whereas if he plays in the final third, it's it's more of a chance to, make a lasting impression and do something that boosts his confidence and i suspect doncaster will be quite offensive and and say enough and i think that's kind of how they play to a certain extent down in league two so i certainly spent that way against palace um and someone with the kind of clever movement and inventiveness of Daichi Kamala could be the person to break through if they prove um stubborn, which you know they they could do, they could do. um Anyone else in there? And Franka sort of suggested that he might have an outside challenge for featuring. And it's like, I don't know anything about
00:10:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
like where Franco is at all good or not, because he's been in the whole time that we've been doing this. I don't think I've seen him play once.
00:10:55
Alex
yeah
00:10:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
That'd be interesting opportunity if he can get kind of 10 minutes under his belt.
00:11:00
Alex
which
00:11:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, he feels I'm basing my analysis of him solely on the fact that all I know is he's a Brazilian attacking midfielder, but I could see him pulling out a Rabona sticking one of the top corner.
00:11:12
Alex
kit
00:11:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
You never know. You never know.
00:11:14
Alex
On a cold night in Doncaster, what what better place to ah announce yourself finally after a year and a half?
00:11:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
hit up
00:11:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's a top quality League 2 player in there somewhere, I'm sure. and to We will take a little pause now for a word from our sponsors and then return to speak about some other sort of medium to top quality League 2 players.

Doncaster Analysis and Challenges

00:12:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you have any worry then Alex that Doncaster could cause Palace some problems in this match?
00:12:20
Alex
Yeah, yeah, absolutely. um We weren't great against Stockport the other week. um i'm not I'm not tarnishing like all league one, league two teams with the same brush. But um yeah, Stockport caused us problems and I fully expect Doncaster might as well like the second in league two at the moment. Grant McCann, bit of a pragmatic kind of manager.
00:12:46
Alex
who will probably be well up for this kind of challenge. ah you know It's on the BBC. so um you know like All the cameras are down, you know it's that kind of feel to it. I've also got Luke Molyneux, who's like a bit of a but of a battering ram sort of player, loves to shoot, just is a bit of a menace.
00:13:07
Alex
um perhaps not as tidy as a kind of Premier League player that Palace are used to. um So I think that could maybe ruffle a few people up. Yeah, that kind of directness I think we might perhaps struggle with. um Yeah, but I think like looking at them, like this season, they haven't been amazing at home, which I think might help. I think they've kept like three or four clean sheets um and they haven't won too many ah recent fixtures. I think they've won like four or five of the last 10 or something, or 11. So they're not yeah they're not amazing at home. But again, cup fixtures like does form really matter that much, especially when you're a low league team taking on and Premier League opposition.
00:13:55
Alex
you know They do go up a level, which um can make things tricky. um But like in terms of setup, they're sort of similar for 4-2-3-1. I don't know if they'll stick with that ah for this game. They might try and spring a few surprises on us, but we'll see. um Yeah, I think we'll have control of the game. But ah yeah, I do worry about that directness. And I wouldn't be surprised if we conceded in this game. but i would I would give us a favourite status quite heavily to go through, especially with Glazner and his high standards. like I can't see us losing this game, to be honest.
00:14:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think you're right, there are sort of intangible things that feel very cap-setty about Don Carster. I think you're right about Molyneux and then Joe Ironside and Billy Sharp, beyond sounding like a pair of cartoon swordsmiths, feel like proper wily old cap-setty,
00:15:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
the kind of experience journeyman you can see getting a just just prodding one in in the 86th minute and scrap your goal like that.
00:15:07
Alex
Yeah.
00:15:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
You could could see it coming down to a moment like that. I think obviously Palace are the strong favourites. But you know you never know, Don Custer, pretty solid defensive record in League One. I didn't realise our home record was so poor. The eco power stadium is not as intimidating as it sounds, but they if they can bed in
00:15:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
having control of the ball is not really what Palace like, I would say the season when they've been at their best, particularly without Eze on the pitch.
00:15:46
Alex
Yeah.
00:15:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it could prove more difficult. I mean, they beat Hull in the previous round, championship team, not a good championship team. him te um So you never know, you never know.
00:15:57
Alex
yeah
00:16:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, you think Palace do obviously have to be, heavy favourites. There's a couple of divisions between them in a hot form, and I think probably in the mood to go for the Cup, which leads me on to my next question, if you're Alex, which is, as a Palace fan, how much energy do you want to see them put into the Cup this season? Should it be a second-view priority to the similar, maybe even the main priority now?
00:16:32
Alex
um Yeah, I think like I would love to see us go on a cup run. It was similar with the Carabao Cup like we got to the quarterfinal and then obviously lost to a very good Arsenal team. um But it's great to see us competing and taking these competitions seriously. I think some of our best recent memories as Palace fans are in the FA Cup, got to the semi-final 2021 I think with Vieira and obviously the final Pardew dance, yeah. Pardew shuffle in 2016, which I hate mentioning because it always just like, I'm like, oh yeah, we got to the final and then heartbreak immediately sets in. But those those are like, in terms of recent memories, we've been mid table Premier League and those are our sort of biggest moments. And like, as a fan, that's what you want is to remember
00:17:27
Alex
your team going to Wembley and trying to win.

FA Cup Importance and Team Morale

00:17:32
Alex
But it's yeah, I would just knowing glasner as well, how he approached those earlier rounds of the Carabao Cup, which I was fortunate enough to go to a couple of the games. It was just like the intensity was just and the professionalism was crazy. Like we were four new up against Norwich, I think at home in the first round.
00:17:52
Alex
And the whole, to like Mateta was still on in the 90th minute as a, and the whole team was like pressing like crazy. um And it's like, it's great to see those standards throughout the club. It's like, no matter who we're playing, no matter what competition, we're going to put the best team out. We're going to be competitive. And I think it will stand us in good stead. So I think if we play us full strength team on Monday, it's kind of an indicator of like, we we're targeting this competition. We want to go far.
00:18:22
Alex
um And yeah, hopefully that can continue with a win at Doncaster on Monday. But yeah, beyond that, who knows? Who knows?
00:18:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I would say definitely the part should prioritize it. I'm never really sure with Glassnut. I definitely think you're right about the intensity and the high standards of no games to be discounted.
00:18:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
I kind of suspect the full strength teams in every game have to do with having about 15 players.
00:18:52
Alex
ah Yeah, yeah.
00:18:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
but There's one full strength team. It's like, I have a best coat and a worst coat, you know what I mean? But yeah, no, definitely. I think Palace Rees should go for it, because I guess the only reason not to We need to put more stock in the league now. I think Palace are safe and don't really need to worry about looking down. It would be kind of, can they make a push for one of those maybe the conference league, kind of outer European places. But I think with with the quality of the teams in that kind of upper mid-table zone and the points differential Palace have to make up,
00:19:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they'd be better off prioritizing, having a real good run, a good crack at the cup, particularly as a few of the other teams left in the competition, it it won't be the main priority for. And as you say, it's just just fun. It could be the difference between, because I think in the league, they will finish, probably regardless of what they do in the cup, somewhere between like ninth and 13th.
00:20:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
And a good cup run would be a real vindication of all the work that's been done under Glastner. And it would sort of say, well, league position might not look so different from the previous sort of six, seven years, but this is this is progress. Even though, as you say, parts have actually been in those positions before, it would just be something to cling to, to kind of I don't know, concretize the sense that I think we all have that Castor is moving the team in the right direction and the tactics are good and pilots are getting better but it would be a semi-final, a quarter-final even. It feels like something kind of a bit more tangible to show for it. Certainly a semi-final if they can get get a game at Wembley and have a good crack, that's
00:21:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's always Maybe that's my Lee Won fans mentality going through there.
00:21:03
Alex
Yeah.
00:21:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anything at Wembley.
00:21:09
Alex
Yeah. Yeah. A day out at Wembley. Yeah. I always, um, I always wonder like, you know, man city and that and Liverpool, they go every year and it's like, does it get boring?
00:21:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
yes
00:21:19
Alex
Like if you go every year.
00:21:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's inconvenient. I have heard a lot of fans moaning about all the games at Wembley. You can't complain about that.
00:21:28
Alex
Yeah. Yeah. Don't take it for granted.
00:21:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Lastly, to wrap up on our preview for the game, what is your actual prediction? How do you think the match will finish?
00:21:45
Alex
um I think we're wearing're in pretty good scoring form, especially in away games recently. I can see us maybe getting two or three. um Again, that's just sort of based on like how good we've been on the road recently. I can see Doncaster scoring, so I'm going to go for a 3-1 Palace. um But these games are so hard to predict. like You know, it just takes ah an off day for us and them for everything to go right and the crowd to get behind them. But yeah, a free one is my prediction.
00:22:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I'm going 2-1 Palace, but in a manner that is less dramatic than that sounds. I'm in Palace, got a tune-up up early.
00:22:32
Alex
but
00:22:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Don't ask for a med-in, and then they score a scrappy goal in the 85th minute. to little rallying afterwards. I just have this vision of Billy Sharpe or Joe Ironside scoring and then running down the touchline, displaying their proudly non-premially frame to all non-claster fans.
00:22:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
like i I just feel it in the air, but I

Match Predictions and Fan Excitement

00:22:56
Alex
it um It's weird you mentioned just quickly Billy Sharp because I remember we were linked with him back in like 2007, 2008, like when we were in the championship and he he was like really good. Well, he still is really good. I didn't realise he's 39. I was like, oh my God, either I'm really old or he's like, he's just been around since like the dawn of time. Like, ah yeah, great, great player to be fair.
00:22:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
think I'm fairly comfortable.
00:23:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, similar age, and arguably playing at a higher level than Ronaldo, who just to enforce it for a day. just like
00:23:29
Alex
shop now, do you?
00:23:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Right, on that, with images of Billy Sharpe and Real Madrid shirt in our minds, ah cause for a quick word from the network and then we'll wrap up with a quiz.

Doncaster Quiz

00:24:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so I've titled this this section ah Fingers Don Buzzes. Alex said before, I hope this quiz isn't about Doncaster. Exactly what it is. We've got three questions.
00:24:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
broadly to do with Monday's opponents. And if you get all three-ray, you'll win a tour around local Roman IV with Doncaster North MP Ed Miliband.
00:24:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
That sound good?
00:24:44
Alex
Is it really the Don Castoff?
00:24:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:24:46
Alex
Oh, okay. ahll but I'll bring the bacon sandwiches and you can get them stuck in his teeth.
00:24:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:24:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah I don't consider they might be there.
00:24:55
Alex
It might be.
00:24:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because someone was on the beeb, he asked me. Surely, surely.
00:24:59
Alex
Yeah, it might be actually. Well, that'd be an interesting camera pan, wouldn't it? I'd never find it.
00:25:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, you never really expected to see the camera panning between Oliver Weisler and Ed Miliband. But there we are. Here we are. i So, are you ready for the first question?
00:25:20
Alex
Yeah, bring it on.
00:25:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palace actually travelled to Doncaster as recently as 2019 when the Eagles won 2-0 in the fifth round of the Cup. Can you name either of the goalscorers that day? I only need one.
00:25:37
Alex
Ooh, 2019, you say. ah Trying to think it was playing for us then. Things have changed a lot. um Let's go with Zaha as one. He was still with us then. I don't know if Matata would have been with us by then. But I'm going to go for Matata anyway because I think he might have been.
00:26:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm afraid neither of them are right there, Alex.
00:26:07
Alex
Oh, no.
00:26:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
You could have kind about the recently ah departed Jeff Schlupp.
00:26:14
Alex
Sloppy, of course, yeah.
00:26:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
A nice solo goal. people
00:26:18
Alex
Yeah.
00:26:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
and show And Max Meyer scored the other.
00:26:24
Alex
Ah, yeah. I remember that. I remember that game, actually, now. Now you've mentioned the two players who scored.
00:26:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:26:30
Alex
It's all coming flooding back. um Yeah, we played the yellow kit, wasn't it? um Yeah.
00:26:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was, it was, it was, well, I'll test your kit knowledge from that game further now.
00:26:39
Alex
Ooh.
00:26:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
So sticking with the match, ah which major train company, which stops in Doncaster, sponsored Doncaster at that time, was across the track?
00:26:51
Alex
uh i don't know if this is a rail company but is it ln er by any chance it is yeah nice okay um my my train knowledge is better than my football knowledge apparently i'm on the wrong podcast
00:26:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
You've got you got five options here, if you need them.
00:27:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
It is only a ah yeah yeah good stuff. The other options have been cross-country, Avanti, Scott Rail, or the Devon and Cornwall Railway. okay
00:27:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Have you had a long, long layover in Longcaster before?
00:27:20
Alex
yeah
00:27:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
the only one
00:27:23
Alex
I was there actually last year, a flying visit, um wouldn't recommend, sorry dont people, with anyone from Doncaster listening.
00:27:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
it
00:27:34
Alex
