Introduction and Match Preview

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm your host today, Dan Tanner, and I'm joined by Joe.
00:00:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Joe, how you doing, mate?
00:00:22
Joe
I am very well. Very well, thank you, Dan. Looking forward to a game of significance in South London. I'm actually going to South London tomorrow, so it'll be hard to tell what will be a tastier kind of midday event, Palace Millwall or my trip to Morley's.
00:00:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, you're heading down to South London. Ooh, that's a...
00:00:48
Joe
e In fairness, i it I'm doing the Bermondsey BMO. So I'm planting the flag for Palace and in Millwall Territory film firmly.
00:00:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, go for it. Yeah, just walk around Millwall with a palace shirt on. You'll be fine. Don't worry. Don't worry, they're all at cellar, so

FA Cup Fixture Discussion

00:01:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's fine.
00:01:06
Joe
yeah
00:01:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, as Joe mentioned there, we are going to be talking about the f FA Cup fifth round fixture on the weekend. I think it's the early game for a change.
00:01:19
Joe
Okay.
00:01:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
We got a 12.30 kickoff. So yeah, we'll be quick going through that. And as last time Palace played Millwall was the kind of the of showcase of Lacey.
00:01:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
At the time, he was still getting into the squad. So We're going to start having a look at some possible Palace superstars that could kind of repeat the repeat history there.
00:01:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
And finally, as it is a weekend fixture pod, we're going to give out predictions and any kind of other star players that might may or may not do anything and in the in a game this weekend.
00:02:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
So to start with, we're going to do a quick thing on... the fixture this weekend. So as I said earlier, last time this fixture was played was at the Den in on January the 8th, 2022. So it's been a few years since we've played. and last time we won, it was 2-1 with goals from Alessi, which was an absolute cracker. A proper, almost world-class goal.
00:02:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
and another one from Mateta, but we're going to get, as I mentioned earlier, we'll get back to that in a little while.

Millwall's Defensive Strengths

00:02:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
The season's sort of for both teams. They're kind of both respectively 12th, 13th in the league.
00:02:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
So they're doing all right. Not brilliant, but they're probably fairly secure. But when it comes to the FA Cup run, Millwall have gone through Dagenham and Redbridge.
00:03:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
which for you non-British listeners, that is one team. Don't worry, it is one team. And they went through Leeds United in the fourth round.
00:03:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
And as you are a Palace supporter and definitely listen to this, you know that we've gone through Stockport and Doncaster to get to this point. So, Joe, with this being the FA Cup and league status at this stage,
00:03:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
not really meaning anything. It always starts to sort of get a little bit more interesting, this end of the FA Cup fixtures. How do you see this game shaping up?
00:03:42
Joe
Well, I think is' it's going to

Palace's FA Cup Prospects

00:03:43
Joe
be... The atmosphere will be pretty febrile. mean, that's, I'm sure, the reason it's been put at half 12. It's always a big game, Millwall Palace. And I think there might be a little bit of extra needle in it this time. There's been a lot of ribbing from Palace fans. Yeah.
00:04:04
Joe
since the SA signing and since his FA Cup draw, a lot of chance of he left because you're not great. And also South London is ours, all of that I've heard, which I'm not sure it's ever wise to do that with Millwall.
00:04:20
Joe
It feels a bit like accusing ausing Gaddafi of a fart or something like that. I wouldn't really take the mick in that regard. But yeah, so I think it will be... it It'll have an intense atmosphere around it.
00:04:34
Joe
I'm not expecting, by any means, a high-quality game of football. I think Millwall's strength, and it is a meaningful strength, as earth is their defence.
00:04:44
Joe
they So they've only actually lost one. of the last nine and that's been built on sort of keeping four clean sheets very often only exceeding one if they can see it at all apart from one strange hiccup where they see the five to a Plymouth team that are frankly rubbish I've seen a couple of times in Oxford this season so yeah it's it's I think it's going to be a bit scrappy but millwall i think just going to try and fold themselves in kind the the formational equivalent of the millwall brick make themselves as dense as possible and try and challenge palace to just hammer away through them probably play for set pieces so that's one of their biggest strengths and they've got some really big physical players like jake cooper who's the best power two meters tall and scored a few few editors this season already
00:05:39
Joe
and Yeah, I don't think it will be enthralling on the pitch, but it'll be passionate.

Millwall Fans and Game Atmosphere

00:05:47
Joe
it will be It's meaningful for both teams.
00:05:52
Joe
I think particularly Palace this season, the FA Cup is sort the big trophy that's narrowly eluded them on a couple of occasions.
00:06:05
Joe
And this year does feel like a really good chance to have a have a good run at it because the two best teams in the country are out already in Liverpool and most of the kind top teams that still in have insecure European positions to play for so I think Palace can really have a good stab at it and yeah we'll push for it as it's a derby it's charged I'm looking forward to it but I think the quality on the pitch will be probably quite low
00:06:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah I'm not expecting a classic in any way, shape or form, but Millwall are sort of dogged. They're not going to sort of, they don't take prisoners. And definitely the fans don't take prisoners. If you're yet again, if you're not from this part of the world, Millwall fans are known for being, how do I put this politely?
00:06:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Slightly confrontational. They don't take it. They just don't take from anybody. They will, They are sort of a bit more aggressive than say some of the other fans. Maybe think West Ham just on steroids is probably the closest you're going to get.
00:07:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
They have a bit of a reputation for being slightly unwelcoming. so
00:07:19
Joe
Okay.
00:07:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's putting it politely. So it's going to be from that that end of the field, it's going to be a hostile atmosphere. But yeah, I'm not expecting any kind of classic in any way, shape or form, but I do sort of very much like the but Doncaster game. Sort of will cruise fairly comfortably, be pretty dominant, but the the quality will show eventually sort of the premiership stature.
00:07:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But as you were saying, I didn't realise that they had very similar form to us of like undefeated sort of very sort of kept, what's it, did you say eight, nine clean sheets in the last season?
00:07:58
Joe
As i've said, they've got four clinch the last nine games, but only lost once in that time. And they've conceded very few and in every game, except that Plymouth one.
00:08:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
because
00:08:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, not not too dissimilar form to us.
00:08:09
Joe
Yeah.
00:08:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
So this could be

Potential Standout Players

00:08:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
quite interesting. so And well, they've got nothing to lose really, being the the smaller team. so they're going to be going for it as much as we are. So I'm expecting a good game, but it definitely will not be a classic in any way, shape or form.
00:08:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm so Unless there's anything else you want to bring up, Joe, for that? Because, well, besides from it being a derby game, which is always, because we don't really get sort of South London derbies properly that often.
00:08:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
as sort of It's only like Millwall and Charlton, I think, are our closest ones that are actually derbies because the Brighton one is considered more of a rivalry, more than a derby game.
00:08:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think that's only also, yet again, through geography that they are our closest Premier League team. But unless there's anything else you want to add,
00:09:05
Joe
The only thing I was going to raise is that i I think be interesting to see what Mill will do with their formation because So that one blip they had defensively, the the five goals could hit to Plymouth, came.
00:09:23
Joe
I believe they didn't match Plymouth. So Plymouth play a similar formation, a 3-4-2-1 kind of shape to Palace. Millwall did not match it and played lead normal 4-2-3-1.
00:09:38
Joe
a sea of five goals and then they did next time they came up against a three at the back system match Preston for it and switch to a three four two one kind of shape and That went better.
00:09:54
Joe
think they got a draw away, deep down in that one. And so I guess it'll be interesting to see if they do opt to change from their normal formation and go to the 3-4-2-1, which sounds like it might work out better for them because you should not be conceding five goals Plymouth. So that speaks to maybe an issue, but...
00:10:18
Joe
Equally, we saw against Villa that playing and switching to an unfamiliar formation carries its risks and Palace are willing to come aware of how to exploit that in isolating the kind of two centre mids and pressing them hard. So I think that could be like could be an interesting area tactically for the game. But other than that, don't if got any more points to add to the initial teams.
00:10:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it's more like let's see if they play like for like kind of thing.
00:10:48
Joe
Yeah.
00:10:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
and So, yeah.
00:10:50
Joe
the They might just go almost man for man and try and kind kick Palace off the pitch, but we'll see.
00:10:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah, it could be an interesting one because, so yeah, just changing a formation last minute is always a little bit risky. You've seen it for loads of teams that have tried to match Palace.
00:11:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Man for man and it hasn't worked. Man you United for example tried it. It didn't work. Villa basically to a point tried it. Didn't work. So it's more of if you know the system it's probably going to be alright. But if you're going to force them through man to man I think Palace will probably come out on top.

Player Impact and Game Time

00:11:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
But That being said, we'll take a quick break here to go through our sponsor. And after that, we will beat we will then start talking about possible superstars compared to the last time we played.
00:11:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
it was the so We had one or two players that became stars now, Alessi and the legend that is becoming Mateta. So we'll see if they they see if a history repeats itself.
00:11:53
Joe
Thank you.
00:11:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we will be right back after this.
00:12:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:12:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we are back with the daily palace podcast. I am your host today, Dan Tanner still joined by Joe. I don't know why he's still here, but he's still hanging around. He's more more than willing to carry on this conversation because we're going to start bringing up Mateta. That's why he's paying attention.
00:12:54
Joe
That's what I'm in here for.
00:12:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that being said, as I said but just before the break, the last time Palace played Millwall was the FA Cup in January 2022. And it was kind of this... It was a show-stealing performance by Alessi, who at the time was still kind of cementing his place in the squad, kind of in and out, a bit of a rotation, etc. So he was still...
00:13:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
making his name for himself and this game practically put him on the map it started people started to take notice of him more than ever before it was also when i think for me at the very least i'm not sure about anybody else but the first time i saw mateta play so and at the time he was i think third maybe even fourth choice center forward at the time he was behind Edward, Ayu, think Benteke was still there.
00:13:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, and now they're all gone, he is the main man. So this was kind of the anointing of the next sort of superstars of Palace.
00:14:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
um i was just sort of contemplating, could history repeat itself? So Cho, are there any so kind of like unsung heroes sort of second or third string players, which you think could make a name for themselves in this fixture to try and, essential as I just asked, to repeat history.
00:14:27
Joe
Well, if it turns out that Mateta is good

Debate on Squad Contributions

00:14:32
Joe
is just laying the groundwork for an even better striker, or be the the greatest kind of passing of the reins on, in that regard, since since John the Baptist and Jesus.
00:14:45
Joe
of so I can't imagine anyone's going hit that height, but...
00:14:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's some high praise there. You're putting John Pagetta up there with John Pagetta.
00:14:52
Joe
John the Baptist, yeah. Yeah.
00:14:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
That is some high praise there, Joe.
00:15:00
Joe
But, yeah, as regards... There's few players... that I think spring to mind as an opportunity to make a name for themselves.
00:15:12
Joe
The obvious one narratively is Romain Essay. He's coming from Millwall in January, crossed the divide in that derby.
00:15:23
Joe
All eyes be on him and we are expecting him to play a little bit. Glasner has said without giving too much away that he has it in his mind to give him some minutes or or something along those lines that suggests he's he's going to make some kind of appearance in the game.
00:15:43
Joe
It could be well sat for him. I think Millwall will be betting in deep and Palace will will be potentially could find themselves a situation if they can't get a goal early where they are relying on someone with a bit of that sort of magic and trickery and inventiveness that SA can offer to pick a way through the mobile back line.
00:16:07
Joe
So I could see him having an impact and he'll certainly be a lot focused on whatever he does. That said, it could easily be a kind of overwhelming game and atmosphere for him. It is at least at home.
00:16:20
Joe
If it was away, I wouldn't really fancy it for a 19-year-old to have to go back to such a hostile atmosphere. than I imagine having made that switch between South London's biggest clubs.
00:16:33
Joe
But yeah, he's definitely one that attention building could make a name for himself. Deveni, I think... I could see starting maybe more so did so well against Doncaster.
00:16:45
Joe
And again, he's he's got similar sort skillset, perhaps not as kind of inventive and tricky as SA seems to be, but similarly smart of his movement, good of his sort of short passing shuttling around the box and that he was,
00:17:04
Joe
one of the people finding gaps in a fairly resolute Doncaster defence, Mill are a better team, but the same kind of basic principles apply to tactical makeup of the game because I'm having a role and I'd love to see him him repeat his antics in that game.
00:17:21
Joe
You know, footballers are role models and I don't think that Millwall fans need any yeah encouragement to lob anything. But if he could pull off another audacious finish like that, then yeah, that would be pretty exciting. And the third one is just, Glasner has confirmed that Franke is going to be on the bench.
00:17:41
Joe
We don't really know anything about him. He had one good cameo against Burnley last year and has has not played for 12 months. But Flamengo had a £200 million pound release clause on him. Palace paid decent money for him. Unless that's just and indicating that Flamengo operate in transfer market like ilane monopoly I which is kind of mayfair for Old Kent Road. You must be having a laugh.
00:18:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
but That just sounds like like we want if Madrid come knocking, we want we want money for him. That sounds more or less what it sounds like. If you want him to come and claim it kind of has to be a deal.
00:18:16
Joe
But it suggests that he was highly rated somewhere and and there must be something about him. So I feel almost like that I have a comment on Franca, but he's kind of waiting for a game like this maybe to come on and show us what he's about after after a year.
00:18:37
Joe
So yeah, I guess they're the three. Deveni is the one I think... probably has the most chance of playing a good number of minutes and and really meaningfully impacting this game and as a platform to kick on further.
00:18:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I, I like the, the, the, the Venny one, cause definitely watching that, Don castle one and then redoing the, uh, podcast immediately after our first things were like the venue is off. was one of the better players on the pitch.
00:19:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, and and the link up with Walton, I think was really good as well, especially way the way that Walton has been playing the last couple of games as well. I'm expecting him to probably get a good sort of half, maybe a little bit more, but,
00:19:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
My one was kind of so to get Nketiah would probably be a good one for me. just so he needs some game time. He really does. it's he' so We so were very sort of positive about him when he signed We thought he'd be sort of like tricky and get some sort of like assists in the box and things like that. But it hasn't really worked out for him through bad form or injury or just essentially the guys around him, his competitions, Mateta and Sarr actually playing really well.
00:19:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
So if he gets a good 60, 70 minutes or something like that, i would prefer him to kind of start instead of just being put in.
00:19:59
Joe
And
00:20:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
the last 15 minutes or so, into place, play with a bit of freedom and actually get a chance to play. And especially after he got his first league goal. So his confidence is probably going to be, he's to be raring to go again.
00:20:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
But just more or less to get, to see what Palace actually paid for from Arsenal. Because at the moment he's come, he's turning out to be a bit of a dud.
00:20:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's just, yeah, he's, I don't, if he doesn't start picking up soon, yeah, his career is going to go nose diving fairly quickly and he will be playing sort of championship football fairly quickly.
00:20:38
Joe
Okay.
00:20:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I don't think he wants that. He wants to be playing top top league football, probably even trying to get into an England. So maybe a bit late for that. But either way, I would like to see him be given a shot.

Manager's Strategy and Respect for Competition

00:20:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Besides from that, Deveni, we already mentioned. I think sort Chilwell probably would be a good one as well to get some minutes under him because we all know what he can do. He's given the ball. He's a very good sort of crosser.
00:21:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
very good tackler and sort of get that sort little bit of extra leadership on the pitch as well because we're kind of slightly sort of low on that besides because yeah uh will hughes can't dictate that entire midfield by himself having a bit of an outlet to chill well out on that left wing would be sort of i think greatly appreciated really and sort of that and a few more of the kind of set piece threat
00:21:30
Joe
Thank
00:21:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
which we've also kind of needed. Eze's been doing well, but I think we need a couple more options. Other than that, I can't really see anybody else really standing out.
00:21:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't yeah can't see any of those sort of... You might give a chance to a couple of the academy graduates, but it might be a little bit sort important to pick up fifth round.
00:22:01
Joe
yeah i think you're right that it might more of a chance for the kind of periphery senior players to to make a mark.
00:22:15
Joe
Gloucester was kind of intimating that in the press conference. He wasn't going to start anyone that doesn't have complete faith in. That would be disrespectful to Millwall and the competition. so It might be one of those ones where it is if anyone's able to make an impression, it might be more sort of a Chihuahua or an Enquetia than a Matthias Franca.
00:22:39
Joe
But we'll see if he can bring a bit the copper cabana to Soerst.
00:22:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely.
00:22:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd give him a run at If we're 3-0 up in 70 minutes, why not give him a run?
00:22:48
Joe
Yeah.
00:22:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, Gladstone knows how to win a tournament. So he's euro Europa.
00:22:59
Joe
Yeah.
00:22:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the second biggest European one. So he does know how to win competitions. So I'm not really going put him past that when it comes to sort of selection.

Predictions and Game Dynamics

00:23:08
Joe
Yep.
00:23:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think that's all we've got on that one. So I think we'll do a quick break to thank our provider here at Zencastr. And then after that, we will give our score predictions.
00:23:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we'll be right back after this.
00:23:29

I am your host, Dan Tanner. And for the last bit, we are still ju joined by Joe while he sorts out his lighting.
00:24:15
Joe
I realised, probably if anyone saw my pyjama bottoms there, I said, run up and turn my light on because the room had just gone dark around me.
00:24:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:24:24
Joe
I'd not anticipated the light going down, as I should have done since it's six. And I've started to look like a men's mental health campaign. It's just my face and then this dark mist descending as the episode went on.
00:24:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
who's a bad
00:24:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Almost a bad omen. The lights are drawing in.
00:24:41
Joe
Yeah.
00:24:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Dun, dun, dun, dun, dun.
00:24:46
Joe
Yeah, that's all.
00:24:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
So let's get back on track.
00:24:49
Joe
Bonus content for YouTube.
00:24:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep. Right, let's try and get back on track. So score predictions. What do we think the score is going to be, Joe? Right, you first and then I'll give mine and then we'll then compare.
00:25:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:25:05
Joe
Yeah, having warded off the demons, I can i can see clearly now that it's going to 2-0 to Crystal Palace. I think... what What I'm expecting is Palace get both goals, sort of 10 minutes either side of half-time.
00:25:25
Joe
Millwall will be very defensive. think Palace have the quality to play three before too long. Don't necessarily see it massively change the dynamic of the match think if you're Millwall, you're probably still thinking your best chance is to try and not concede and see what you can nick on the counter.
00:25:46
Joe
So I think it'll continue to play out in the same vein, really. And ultimately, think that Palace will, again, have the quality to just work another two goals.
00:25:59
Joe
Mateta and 40, minute 62. That's what I'm saying.
