Introduction and Review of Crystal Palace vs. Everton

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Palace Podcast. I am your host today, Dan Tanner, and I'm all on my Todd, all on my own, because everybody else is busy today. So I get the distinct pleasure of talking about the pretty atrocious Palace game on the weekend.
00:00:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
i kind of After watching some of the highlights, I kind of get why nobody really wants to talk about it. They just want to carry on with their week and just carry on.

Podcast Agenda Overview

00:00:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're going to relatively quickly go over a review of the weekend's game against Everton. We're going to also have a mini rant slash discussion.
00:00:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
on the disallowed goal from Lerma on the 19th minute, something in that somewhere around there. And finally last, nailing the coffin of this game, the good, the bad and the ugly to finish off. And then we will then start to look forward to the game on the weekend against Fulham.

First Half Dominance but Missed Opportunities

00:01:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
So to begin with, let's go and revisit the game against Everton which can be basically summed up into one sentence of how did we lose that, seemed to dominate against against them, and then can just completely implode. As the first half, we did look more like the dominant side, several chances to go ahead, a couple from Mateta, which on any other day of the ah any any other day, you probably would have seen him slotting them away with no, not really to taking a second thought,
00:01:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
and a thunderbolt from Tsar, which hits the underside of the crossbar, which after watching it a few times, I'm just not sure how he managed to do that. It seemed to be harder to actually miss that than to score. it' He's on the five five-yard line, something like that, with him. And he hits it with such power, it just keeps rising and hits the crossbar and comes out.

Errors and Everton's Advantage

00:02:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's got 85, 70% of the goal to his left-hand side. He could have just slotted it around the keeper, a little bit more control. But no, he just goes full power at the keeper and it just hits a crossbar and goes out. So I just, yeah, I don't know how he managed to miss that. I would expect something like that when you're on a pub team. Yeah, down but down on your pub team with Derek and Barry and they just skin the ball completely.
00:02:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not from a guy that's sort of in the top league in the world, you would expect him to at least hit the target or hit the goalie, something like that. But, hey ho. Then we have the disallowed goal, which we're going to talk about in a little while with a mini rant slash discussion, as I mentioned. Then we also have Everton's first goal, which just always embarrassing.
00:03:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's quite literally the ball is thrown to him and I'm not being facetious here it's the ball is literally thrown to an Everton player which then goes down the pitch with a two-on-one situation and then net Neto scores basically a sitter it's just it was bad just Tyreek Mitchell has has to throw him and he's I think i think the the idea is to throw it to Lerma. But Lerma's looking the wrong way and it's about two or three yards ahead of him. But for some reason, Tyreek Mitchell throws it behind him. Nobody there. And yeah, it's just picked up by an Everton player or just pass a halfway line and it's just, oh, it's embarrassing.

Recurring Mistakes and Loss of Form

00:04:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
And especially from Tyreke Mitchell, as I was kind of singing his praises last the other week against Man United, where he was for the first 20, 25 minutes, probably one of the best players on the pitch. And then he goes and does something like this. So I don't know what was going through his head, but he's probably gonna have to live with that one for a little while. It will definitely be in the film study on Monday morning. It's definitely gonna be brought up.
00:04:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
But above from that, Palace then get a goal back in the second half from a sort of scrambled goal from Mateta with the assist from Gehi, which it where itself the ball comes back over. It kind of gets a nice, kind of lobbed pass, if you say something like that, like over the defenders, and Mateta catches it cleanly and puts it away to get one back.
00:05:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then, yeah, sort of cruising relatively comfortably 1-1. And then finally, Everton get but this the second goal, which the the ball basically comes ah ah along our left right flank, goes along of and gets into the 18-yard box. It's kind of crossed somewhat low. hits I think it hits a Palace defender. There are a couple of shouts for handball.
00:05:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And while everybody is kind of not in tech is half waiting to see if the referee is going to blow the whistle or check VAR or whatever, it ricochets around a little bit and la settles in front of Alaves, who just gets a very easy goal where a lot of the Palace players are standing there looking completely dumbfounded, not moving, just completely caught caught all watching. And it basically summed up Palace's sort of movement and sort of decision making in that game when it came when they were off the ball was just, we're not sure what we're supposed to be doing. And a lot of very avoidable mistakes and sort of unforced errors. And it was it wasn't a pretty game to so watch, wasn't a pretty game but as a Palace fan. But it it seems to be something against Everton. We haven't beaten them
00:06:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
in something like I think we haven't beaten them in like three or four years. It seems with the 30 odd games we played against them in the last decade or more that we won once and it's something about Everton that we can't seem to deal with and just it wasn't it wasn't a good game of football to watch. It was a a lot um the avoidable mistakes which This podcast has basically been kind of praising that the Palace have gotten past this ever since i the end of November. And it seemed that we were confident, we were slick, we were starting to go somewhere. And a lot of these issues had kind of dissipated almost. But against Everton, they reared their ugly head again. And it's just why? where Why are you suddenly starting to do this now?
00:07:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that is and more or less a review of what happened. We're going to take a quick break and get a word from our sponsor, BioNique. And after that, we're going to have a quick-ish analysis of Lehrman's disallowed goal and then the good, the bad, and the ugly from the Palace game.

Disallowed Goal and VAR Discussion

00:08:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
We will be right back.
00:08:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we are back with the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. And as promised, we're going to have a little discussion, mini discussion, rant, if you will, on Jeffrey Lerner's 19th minute disallowed goal, where it's from like from a corner and ah at full speed, it looked there looks like to be no problem with it whatsoever. Goes up high, Jeffrey Lerner gets a headed goal on the far post,
00:09:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nice, clean, no problem. And then the lines of his flag's gone up and everybody's like, oh, what what went out? What happened? that Wasn't offside. ah ah And it's claimed that the ball went out of play. Did it? Probably. It looked like it probably did, which that I don't have the problem with. If it went out of play, it went out of play. That's part of the rules.
00:09:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
But between the REF and VAR could not conclusively verify if the ball went out of play or not. So by default, it's a disallowed goal. And I just I don't think there's a protocol for this after doing a bit of research on the FA's website for the rules for corners and at play, etc.
00:10:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
there doesn't seem to be a protocol for if the ref and VAR can't actually determine what it is. but the the camera angle the The camera angles they were using, one of them was too close to the goal because I think it's used for mainly goal line decisions if the ball went over or not. And as oppos as the corner is taken, it goes up and out of the camera angle.
00:10:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
So you can't tell with that one. The other camera angle they use is, I think, one that's used for offside decisions, which is also high and kind of at a full 30-something degree angle from where the corner is taken. So that can't tell either. So, yeah, between the two of them, they can't tell if it will actually happened. So it's then determined that it's a disallowed goal.
00:11:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I would have thought if they can't make a decision, they would order a retake. I'm not sure. Most of these other decisions when they can't, when both sides are, say, at odds or both committed a foul or whatever, it's a drop ball, isn't it? So they basically set the precedent for this. For when they can't make a decision in the in this situation,
00:11:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
it goes down as a disallowed goal, which is kind of, I'm not sure how to react to that, because you kind of would think that would be sort of how you get it, but I'm not really sure, it just seems to be yet, sorry, seems to be another blind spot for VAR. Yeah, we'll very much sort of somewhat keep an eye on this,
00:12:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
see if something similar happens over the next couple of weeks and see what decisions are made there. As we all know at the the moment the refereeing and decision making when it comes to sort of incidents can change quite literally game by game. They'll have the same incident in two different games and there'll be two completely different decisions on how it's taken how it's sorted out.
00:12:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, it was a very, very slightly weird scenario. just This is like a ah ah part of VAR that I think a lot not a lot of people have actually considered what to actually do about it. So it looks like we're going to have to have almost cameras that are high on either corner to basically make sure that they stay in bounds. So yeah, it's a very, just a very weird situation.
00:13:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think I'm fairly sure the decision was right. It looked like the ball went out. It was very, very tight if it was. But I have to admit, from what the vague angle it did have, it did look like it went out. So that I don't have a problem with. it If the call is correct, fine. It's just the fact of they couldn't decide conclusively. So they just defaulted to, they're just going to disallow the goal.
00:13:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
just completely and utterly disallow it. So, yeah, we'll just have to wait and see because this this could set a precedent.

And we are back for the final part of today's Daily Palace podcast brought to you by Global Sports Podcast Network. So, the good, the bad and the ugly. So, let's start off on the positives. The good. Mateta, as always, was excellent. At least for the first half. First half, 60 odd minutes. There were some decent signs of him scoring a goal early on.
00:15:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
He gets his goal the second half to keep to get us back to a draw. But it just very much of there was nobody else really on the team that was going to be sort of scoring goals. But his movement was good. His sort of connection with some of the yeah so the the attacking players was as you would expect from him, really.
00:15:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's a guy in form, but it was just just not enough really. he I think he just needs to start putting some of these other chances away to just sort of keep just keep getting going going up the, just to keep scoring really. That's basically his job here, is to get the goals and to keep Palace moving forward. just I think we just need a few more people that actually to help with some of the goal scoring, we can't just be very reliant on one player. The bad was just a lot of avoidable mistakes, mainly sort of the everything goal which we've talked about and probably will probably bring up over again in a minute and also the concealing of the second goal just completely caught flat-footed
00:16:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Everybody nobody knew whether they who they were supposed to mark who where they were supposed to be almost half-stopping Waiting to see if the referee was going to do anything and then just just caught for watching almost and just yeah, just there's no real link-up play everybody's is sort of kind of not I wouldn't say not paying attention, but it just weren't I going at full pelt weren't on form weren't really there almost they were waiting for other people to do it instead of and then taking the initiative and the ugly well I mentioned it a few moments ago and I'm going to mention it again and again was Everton's first goal that just are literally throwing the ball to them it's
00:17:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's almost unforgivable, really. That's just one of those ones that's going to be remembered for a while by the Palace faithful and especially from a player like Tyreek Mitchell that over the last few weeks, has done it was really starting to get of a good bit of form. And now with Chillwell, he might be able to get a rest here and there. But it was just, oh, it was bad. you You don't want to be doing that at the top level.
00:17:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
just, oh, it was so bad. Uh, is hopefully, uh, it will be brought up in the palace meetings and it would, hopefully a lot of these avoidable mistakes will start to go away again and we don't have to keep bringing them up.

Conclusion and Looking Ahead to Fulham

00:18:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that being said, I don't think there's anything else we want to talk about this game. We want to move forward. We want to start looking ahead to the Everton game, and not the Everton game. We want to forget the Everton game.
00:18:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
We want to look forward to the Fulham game on the weekend. So with that, I think we will leave that there.
