Introduction and Setting

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network, as you just heard from our brilliant intro. So today, I am joined by Alex Way. Are you all right, mate?
00:00:24
Alex
Yeah, I'm all good. Thanks, Dan. I actually, as we just before we started recording, I was like, it's the first time in ages ah but we've recorded a pod and it's still light outside. So I'm feeling positive about that.
00:00:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's starting. Yes, it is light and as I've as just mentioned there, I'm the host today, Dan Tanner. I'm still forgetting to do that, which is really, really annoying. yes, it's actually light outside for once.

Everton Fixture Preview

00:00:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
So today, as is tradition on a Friday, we are going to talk about the weekend fixture against Everton, against Celes Park. So I'm going to go through some team news for both sides, or less.
00:01:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
and we're also going to talk about the year anniversary with glasner which i only just found out there was on the 19th with when he took over it feels like it was way early it's been he's been in the club way longer than that so as it's uh as it's valentine's let's talk about our our anniversary with our new with our gaffer uh and then finally we're going to talk about the uh the scores get our score predictions some key players
00:01:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
and just see how it goes from there, really.

Player Injury Updates

00:01:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
So to start with, team news. On the Palace side of the pitch, our long-term injuries are largely the same, so the Cora, Riyadh are all still out injured. But on the good news,
00:01:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Eze, Nketia and Saar should be available. From what Glaston was saying in his press conference, that they've all trained and should be available. Fingers crossed. So Eze is probably going to be starting, probably Saar as well. Would you think so? Alex?
00:02:10
Alex
yeah i think so
00:02:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:02:13
Alex
Definitely Eze. He's obviously our one of our key players this season. And he came on at Man United. He wasn't supposed to be even in the squad, but he had a 30-minute cameo and we scored two goals while he was on the pitch. So if there's any testament of how important he is to us, it's that. And one of the goals, he obviously did his little dink free-kick routine that we've sort of seen a couple of times this season. He found Lacroix who headed it against the bar and then Mateta was there.
00:02:41
Alex
to like tap it in but yeah he's obviously a game changer and I think what I heard last week when I was watching the Doncaster game apparently he's been carrying ah an injury for a while so that game actually came at a really good time the Doncaster game it's not a game we would have risked him in properly anyway so it actually gave him a week off to recover from this ongoing injury So hopefully he comes back in full fitness. Like I saw Glazner's press conference earlier, and he didn't seem too worried about Eze. So that's really big news for us. And obviously, Everton had that incredible game in midweek that was just incredibly intense against Liverpool. And I think a player like Eze
00:03:29
Alex
could stretch the legs of Everton a bit and cause them a few problems. like They're not going to have too much left in the tank. then even Saar coming back as well, like a a really blistering player who just loves to run at people and is very direct.
00:03:43
Alex
you know Those two could could could open up Everton, I think. So they're coming back at the right time, which is good.

Key Players' Impact

00:03:49
Alex
And then, yeah, and Ketia, the bench warmer, as we perhaps call him at the moment.
00:03:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
answer And Kettier is just there. He'll be there, he'll be a spare basically. If anybody's still got the niggle, do you mind coming on for a bit?
00:04:02
Alex
Yeah, it's a shame that was injured for Doncaster because I think he would have started that game if he was available. But yeah, he's with Mateta just in such good form and Kessya is going to be on the bench and we just, you know, he's he's not going to start this one. But he is a good option to have and hopefully, you know, he can become that kind of incredible super sub player that he was at Arsenal for us. That's all we can see him being for the time being. but Yeah, positive news all round.
00:04:30
Alex
Like, yeah, Riyadh and the Kooray, like, they're obviously out for a long time. So, you know, we'll have to make do, but we've got Adam Wharton back as

Everton's Challenges

00:04:38
Alex
well. He played on Monday, which is good.
00:04:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh Yeah, it was really, me and Joe were talking about that on um Monday after the game, after our little of mode about actually trying to find it on our BBC iPlayer. Oh my God, it was awkward.
00:04:50
Alex
yeah
00:04:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah, we were sort of talking about that, Walton's back. And from what I saw of it, he looked really good and very much the playmaker we kind of are needing and had a really good link up with you.
00:04:56
Alex
and
00:05:01
Alex
Yeah.
00:05:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
So if one went forward, the other one stayed back and vice versa, they almost had a like a telepathy or there was almost like maybe a code word or something, they probably shouted to each other, I'm going to go forward this time, but
00:05:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Wharton looked good and a little the little cameo against Man United, he looked fairly sort of solid as well.
00:05:20
Alex
yeah
00:05:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
So right, so now we're going to talk about on the Everton side of the board for their injury list, it'd probably actually be easier just to tell who isn't on the injury list.
00:05:31
Alex
It's a log one.
00:05:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, it's a long one. Oh my God. I don't know how if they've actually got enough players to put out on the pitch. a but like can if you want i can bar and borrowron kaier for but But the key ones for for us anyway, Indidi is out after the game against Liverpool.
00:05:39
Alex
and I might have to borrow some of ours. And Katia.
00:05:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's going to be out for probably a couple of weeks. Dwight McNeil is out until March, which is also good because last time he played, he scored two.
00:06:07
Alex
yeah
00:06:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
One being a bit of a worldie from really, really bad defending from Palace. I still have nightmares about that defending. And Dominic Calvert-Lewin is also out injured without hamstrings.
00:06:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that's probably a week or two. Hamstrings are always a little bit dodgy there. So, yeah, are you confident going into this game, Alex, with a those sort of key players out injured or because of their heroics against Liverpool, essentially, on the last Liverpool derby at Gooderson, do you think they're going to be a little bit more of a handful?
00:06:44
Alex
Uh, yeah, I think these injuries are good, good news for us, especially in diet. He's a, he's a class player. and he, he sort of been key to Everton's like improved form recently. He's been scoring and he scored like four or five goals in the last few games. so yeah, seeing him on, on the injury list will be a big, big, plus for us. Yeah. Like I said, McNeil, I have exactly the same as you Dan. Like he's, he, he wasn't great, uh, for like,
00:07:12
Alex
he hasn't been great for ages and then against us he just turns it on and he's like the player that he was at Burnley like scoring 10 plus goals a season and it's just like so it's always against us isn't it these players like find a bit for him but yeah sort of glad that he's not playing and then yeah Calvert-Lewin, like I think he got sent off against us when we played at Celes last year in the Cup.
00:07:35
Alex
But I can't remember him being that much of a threat against us whenever we played. He saw that player who's always got potential but never really delivered it. So even if he was playing, I'm probably not too worried about him.
00:07:47
Alex
But I think they had Abdelied D'Corre sent off as well, didn't they, after the match. So I'm not sure.
00:07:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think so, yeah, after some very sort of an incident, let's say at the end of the game.
00:07:58
Alex
Yeah.
00:08:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, he's going to be out for unselectable for a while.
00:08:05
Alex
Yeah, so that's like he's obviously key for their midfield as well. So having him being idiotic at the end of the Merseyside Derby has paid in half favour massively getting into a scrap with Curtis Jones, I think it was. So um yeah, I mean, things are looking good for us ahead of this game on the injury front and our returning players. So hopefully we can turn that into a win.
00:08:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i'm I'm getting more and more confident as the season goes on. We're starting to get players back, which is good. We haven't got this of increasingly long list, but most of the ones have been the top since, say, like November, have been only little niggles and only re-ad, essentially, re-aggravating an injury and making it even worse.
00:08:53
Alex
Yeah.
00:08:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then Decoré making his injury even worse. I'm not sure how he managed to do that. but Yeah, most of our ones have been only out for a couple of days. And as a, I think he's had his little niggle since the Arsenal ones at Christmas, I think. I seem to remember that there was a doubt if he played, but because it's Arsenal in the cup and then in the league, we kind of needed him inlet on the pitch. So that may have been why he's been sort of in and out at the moment. So yeah, I'm starting to get more confident like you. we've
00:09:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
but now We're on form, we're the team in form and we're basically where we should be in the league. So if we can kind of push forward a little bit more and keep these injuries to a minimum, would be greatly appreciated. And with that, I get the distinct honor to do our very, very first proper sponsor.

Glazna's Anniversary Reflections

00:09:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we have our new sponsor. I'm going to go over our play, our new advert from Bonique.
00:10:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we are back with the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. but so And we are now going to continue on our discussion as it is Valentine's Day. We're going to talk about the anniversary one year anniversary with Glazna in charge. as I didn't realize this until I was looking up notes for this that it was on f February the 19th last year that Palace appointed Glazna as the new gaffer after party ways
00:11:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
with sort of our usual one, Roy Hodgson. And it was only a matter of time. He was kind of on the way out. It wasn't looking good. It was poor form. It was a ah ah team at that point. I hadn't really won a game, I think, in a better part of two months. We were struggling and it was just dire football. So it moved on and we bought in Glazner. And ironically, which also looking up, his first the first game after we signed him was against Everton.
00:11:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
but he wasn't actually in charge.
00:11:44
Alex
Interesting.
00:11:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
so So a bit more full circle and everything.
00:11:52
Alex
yeah Yeah, it had to be, didn't it?
00:11:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
and was Yeah, it was just full circle.
00:11:54
Alex
okay
00:11:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
So with that, ah Alex, do you have any highlights from sort of glasner's time? Well, so far the last 12 months.
00:12:05
Alex
Yeah, I mean, we've... Just like you mentioned in Holchin there, Dan, that just sort of brought back some some pretty night nightmarish reviews about it.
00:12:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're pandas fans. butre We're used to apps sort of looking back and seeing despairing on form for a month and going, how are we still around?
00:12:25
Alex
Right, it was so bad. like just yeah Considering where we are now, we've almost more or less so similar players to what we had. it's just yeah we're We're in such a different place. but yeah A few highlights for me. It was just the end to the whole end to last season where we beat Villa 5-0 at home and Man United 4-1 at home. I think there are a couple of big other results in there as well. I think we beat Newcastle 3-4-0 at home as well.
00:12:53
Alex
you know they're not With all due respect, they're not like, you know, a lower to mid table teams. These are like the big boys of the Premier League and we trounced them comfortably under Glazner. And I think those are some highlights for me. think this season was the Aston Villa away game in the Cup.
00:13:13
Alex
I was lucky enough to be there for that game and it was just almost like a turning point for us. you know We had such a bad start to the season and everyone was like, what on earth is going on? like We were so good last season and then we lost a few players in the transfer window, like Elise and Anderson and players like that.
00:13:32
Alex
and yeah it was it was dreadful it was almost like the Hodgson days like he said like just like so bad didn't know what was going on but i think that villa away game and the Tottenham one at home was one nil just like big turning points and that was when the club started to like galvanize a little bit the fans started to believe Mattetta was getting everyone up for it like riding the crowd up and everything and just yeah those two games like It went from, Glazner went from zero to hero in the space of like a week when we won two games. But yeah, since then it's been quite steady sailing. Like we always knew Glazner as a top manager. It's great to see him like delivering now. We just look really well balanced across the pitch. And I think we're playing good exciting football as well. We're not just like, you know, sitting back and allowing teams to dominate us and
00:14:25
Alex
trying to nick a goal on the counter attack with a bit of Eze magic. slide We're actually in games now and we're taking on like big teams and I think that's credit to Glazna. I think he's in it for the long run as well. He strikes me as someone who fancies sticking around for a bit. He's not like a manager who gets a bit of interest and departs straight away. like I know there was interest from Munich in him over the summer and it's you know He stayed with us and like I hope he does stay for a long time because he does seem like a good ah ah good manager who can get the best out of players like we've seen with like Mateta these young players like Wharton. He's definitely the best kind of coach for them. so yeah Overall, he's been fantastic, but my highlights, yeah those two games at Spurs and Villa and then the end of last season, just yeah wow, he blew us away.
00:15:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah, those are good, sort of good highlights here. The Villa one, definitely. Really, at the beginning of the season, we needed that kind of win as well, because it led into the Spurs one, and then we started to gain momentum a little bit more.
00:15:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
and and But my highlights were beating Man United out at home 4-0, and then doing it at Old Trafford.
00:15:40
Alex
Yeah.
00:15:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
We did, a I think, a season double. He completed it. I think we did it with Hodgson, been Man United at Celos Park and also ending a 29 unbeaten run at Anfield.
00:15:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
You always like to get one over the Scalsas.
00:15:59
Alex
Yeah. We thought we have, we have previous of that, which is like, is yeah, always remember.
00:16:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
We have a great habit against Liverpool in some of these big clubs. We just dawned in the side.
00:16:09
Alex
I always remember Gerard, it was Gerard's last game, and there was such a big party atmosphere before the game, like, oh, Gerard, what a legend, whatever, and we beat him at 2-0 at Anfield. It's just laughable.
00:16:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Exactly.
00:16:22
Alex
It's just so funny, like, no one would expect it, and we'd just do it. Sorry, Palace, though, innit, to win, like, to beat Liverpool and that. But, yeah, sorry, dogs started barking.
00:16:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, he's enjoying it too, so it's fine. one But yeah, i we have this great habit of almost like deciding the league almost at the back end of the season as well, so.
00:16:38
Alex
Yeah.

Palace Under Glazna's Management

00:16:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
always fun on my Liverpool fans. I'm like, oh, Palace is coming around the corner, they're getting nervous now.
00:16:51
Alex
yeah Yeah, they think they always think they're going to win though, and they they never do. Well, they do quite a lot, but...
00:16:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
They fairly regularly, but every once in a while, but we remember.
00:17:01
Alex
Yeah, the big games, we always have a final say.
00:17:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, oh, but is his tenure at the for the last year has been sort of fairly sort of steadying the ship because we've had years of going up and down and having fly by night managers and having ones that are trying to almost reinvent the wheel sometimes or in the case of Hodgson where it's very much a very slightly dated tactics that just aren't working in the premiership anymore and things like that. So having somebody that can sort of, that is sort of a modern manager that is willing to sort of try out, sort of do the new systems and it will he will stick to it.
00:17:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's one of my slight things that he does stick to the same system all the way along, but most managers kind of do. But yeah, and it does manage to get the most out of players once they start to believe in the system and get to to sort of believe in but the process, essentially. So yeah, Mateta is one of them. Walton is definitely one that's coming through. Eze is definitely a one that's come through these sort of is mentorship essentially. So yeah, I think that's pretty much anything else we want to talk about. so ah ah Praise glasner even more or unless he wins a trophy then he'll become a god.
00:18:26
Alex
yeah Yeah, if we get past Millwall and we go on to win the FA Cup, that's sort of the thing of dreams, isn't it really? So let's build a statue of him if he does that.
00:18:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
He will be here deity there will be the church of glasner in one of the The homestellent.
00:18:42
Alex
Yeah, we'll we'll be going through it because we're going to obviously start the new stand soon. We obviously yeah we might be walking through the concourse and being like, oh, we just just need something to finish this off. Like we're just missing that one little feature.
00:18:54
Alex
A big statue of Glasgow would bring it together nicely.
00:18:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh ah Go for it. we where Every football fan likes a good statue.
00:19:01
Alex
Yeah.
00:19:02
Global Sports Podcast Network

And we are back with the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm Dan Tanner. I'm still joined by Alex Way. And finally, we are going to now give our score predictions and some key players we think are going to affect the game against Everton on the weekend. So, Alex, do you want to go first with your score prediction?

Match Predictions and Analysis

00:20:04
Alex
Yeah, so it's that time of the week again Dan, isn't it?
00:20:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
and so That's one of the week. one One day we're going to put a record and make sure to see who actually wins over the course of the year. I think we'll do that next season. I think it's too late now.
00:20:16
Alex
yeah Yeah, we'll get the trophy ready for next season, if there's room in the budget. um um Yeah, I think umm i'm quite I'm feeling confident about this one, which like is never a good sign, because whenever I do feel confident, we always lose. But i just like I mentioned earlier, I think there's enough going against Everton and enough going for us that we're we're going to get a good result out of this.
00:20:44
Alex
I think if we didn't, perhaps didn't have Eze and Saabak, I might have been thinking about it differently, but that was some welcome news this afternoon, watching the press conference. So yeah, I think i think that we we can snatch a win here. I don't think it will be a one-sided game though, just David Moyes being David Moyes, it just makes it so hard. like I watched Everton's game at Brighton the other week,
00:21:11
Alex
and they were just so difficult to break down. But saying that, I think our attacking players have like gelled a bit more recently and clicked. So I think that we'll find a way through. So i maybe a 1-0. I don't think there's going to be lots of goals in this game. again, our defense has been rock solid recently. So I can't see us giving away too many chances, especially as they have a few attacking players out. So yeah, I'm going to go for 1-0.
00:21:37
Alex
In reality, he'll probably be no-no or something like that. But yeah, we'll see.
00:21:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I'm very much on a similar vein. I think it was gonna we're one of the teams in form We're looking good. But the problem is Everton are looking good as well They've slowly between the two of us have slowly creeped out of the relegation fight ever since we basically played them at the beginning of the season they're coming off a high of Getting a draw off of Liverpool in the dying seconds from the game from what I understand of it so then they're gonna be up for it and Um, we're on a high as well from basically walking, walking over man United to sort of show them how to actually play football from time to time.
00:22:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Uh, so I've got to take a dig. You're gonna, I'm going to keep doing it until they beat us.
00:22:22
Alex
Yeah, do it, man. You've got to go for it when you can. We don't we don't get these too often.
00:22:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
exactly
00:22:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah, I very much for the same vein, it's not going to be pretty, but I think we can walk away with a two nil because it's going to be at home. the The Palace fans are going to be up for it. It's just, I expect this is going to be scrappy. It's going to be physical. We're going to probably hit... Our style of hitting on the counter is fairly effective, but it's going to be interesting because Everton, as you were saying, aren't that easy to break down. Moyes being Moyes, it's very old school football. So we'll see. I'm fit i'm pretty confident.
00:23:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
as as we've started to win and win a little bit more convincingly. So who do you think some of the key players are going to be for one or two for Palace and then one or two for Everton? Who do you think is going to be the but guys that are going to stand out?
00:23:24
Alex
I think with Palace, yeah, definitely Eze and Mateta as well. I think they'd probably be the key to unlocking Everton's defence. I think, yeah, in Wharton, if he starts, I don't see why he wouldn't start. Again, Glasner was saying that he's got 60 minutes under his belts at Doncaster, which is more than they thought he would get. So I can see him starting with Will Hughes, and those two are just so creative. But then on Everton's side, I mean, they don't have Decoré, which is like a massive win for us. But they do have Anana, who's very good, and Timothy Irup.
00:24:06
Alex
I can't pronounce his name. e la He's quite good, like a technical player as well. I can see that midfield battle being quite interesting. But then, you know, they've got Tarkovsky at the back. He's just like an absolute unit. You know, we all know him from his Burnley days as well. Just so such a solid, real defender.
00:24:29
Alex
and obviously scored the winner on Wednesday, so he his confidence will be will be high. So yeah, although they've got a few players out, they are like a solid team with some good players. But yeah, just everything in me is saying that we've got the edge on this one. But yeah, there there are a few players that we do have to watch out for from them.

Yeah, I'd probably largely agree with you on the Everton, but I'd also probably put put in Pickford as well, because when when he's on it, he's very difficult to sort of score against, when he's in lots sort of his rage mode and he's screaming at the defence from the other end of the pitch.
00:25:12

you've also got to think He's also wildly inconsistent as well, so he might sort have a moment of madness
00:25:15
Alex

so that's keepers for you um and and but on on the palace side yeah i can't see really anybody passed as a and even meteta as their sort of their partnership is starting to grow they've started become a lot more lethal particularly on that counter uh i think mainly it was i think it was in the west ham game when they were sort of one or two really good like like over the top passes uh they're they are starting to work as a unit and basically almost drag the team with us.

So yeah, Mateta and Eze for me, Gehi as usual, it's got to be solid. LaQua has got to be solid. And even even a shout out to Chris Richards over the last couple

He's been really, really good, especially Doncaster, a man united. He was really really good. I was very surprised actually like why we, why did we get Chaliber when he's sitting on the bench?
00:26:05
Alex
Yeah.
00:26:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
We didn't really need Chaliber after all of that and and hopefully we might get a ah ah another but few minutes of a chill well maybe if we're sort of struggling because Everton do kind of slightly struggle with the deep deep crosses and things like that so he might be put on as a sort of attacking option
00:26:17
Alex
Yeah.
00:26:19
Alex
Yeah. Good point. Yeah.
