00:00:31
Alex
Cheers, Wale. Good to be here. Yeah, I'm all good. all good Thank you.

Crystal Palace vs Everton: Game Analysis

00:00:35
Alex
Slowly getting over our defeat to Everton at the weekend. But hopefully we can improve from there.
00:00:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it becomes more difficult, you know, when the team is having a good run and then a defeat comes, it's more difficult to cope with it. At the start of the season, maybe because of the number of defeats, you begin to maybe lower your expectations. But at the moment, this is the time when Palace fans are really expecting a good result every time the boys file up. But the Everton one was just not a great one yet.
00:01:10
Alex
Yeah, mate. The expectations were high. Me and Dan predicted a win in Friday's preview pod, which you know is often the way you predict the win and we lose.
00:01:22
Alex
But um yeah, i the nature of the game was a bit frustrating as well. like I felt like we could have won

Home Form vs Away Performance: A Deep Dive

00:01:28
Alex
it. um But you know Everton being Everton under David Moyes going to be tough.
00:01:34
Alex
aye And that's what happened. they They rolled us over on the counter-attack a couple of times.
00:01:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
like
00:01:38
Alex
but Yeah.
00:01:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
well
00:01:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, you're totally right. Ask Liverpool what happened in the final minutes and you will get the perfect description of David Moyes' Everton. Anyway, tonight on the pod, we'll be looking at Palace's own farm. but Not very great this season, unable to emulate ah what was a respectable home form last season.
00:02:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll also be talking about Olivier Glasner's one year in charge of the Eagles. it is exactly one year ah since the the boss came to Salos Park. We were taking a look at and um you know getting Alex and, of course, my thoughts as regards what the last one year has been under Olivier Glasner. We'll also talk about some of the problems are facing Glasner, particularly the Ben Chilwell-Tyrick Mitchell selection conundrum.
00:02:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
um A lot of talks have been ongoing as regards that, especially after the performance of both players in the Everton game, Chilwell did have somewhat of a cameo ah in the Everton game. So that's the line-up um tonight. Anyway, ah let's get into it, Alex, and start with Crystal Palace's home form.
00:02:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Last season, seven wins Palace got at home. Of course, not great when you look at the number seven, but for a team like Palace, understanding the ah the top clubs you know come to to your home and you do try to get results against the clubs around you.
00:03:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was a respectable figure. But this season hasn't been the same story at home. the the ah because ah The last win was in November last last year at home, and there hasn't been another win.
00:03:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah The other win at home was the Tottenham game. Only Ipswich and Southampton have worse home records than Palace in the league this season. That's definitely not company you want to be keeping con considering you know, where both teams are on the table. But when you look at Palace's own form this season, what exactly would you put it down to? Is it that there's more pressure when the boys play at Celos or is it just one of those things where you really cannot understand why it is, but it is just what it is?
00:03:55
Alex
ah Yeah, it's it's it's kind of hard to explain because in some ways I actually feel like we play better football at Sellers Park. um Definitely more front foot, a bit more controlled football rather than the kind of counter-attacking style we see away from home.
00:04:15
Alex
But I think at home we've just we've made so many mistakes that have led to match-winning goals from the opposition or goals at pool teams' level. like We obviously saw Tyrek Mitchell's mistake on Saturday go punished.
00:04:31
Alex
um but there's been a few instances like that. I can think of the Leicester game. you know We let Vardy run completely through and score. ah The West Ham game conceded a couple of sloppy goals. Brentford at home, a silly penalty we gave away.
00:04:48
Alex
um There's just yeah a lot of mistakes we've made at home. And we know that like the fine margins of the Premier League. you know You will get punished if you make mistakes like that. um But I think...
00:05:01
Alex
Yeah, the kind of way we set up at home is a bit more front foot. And I don't think that kind of suits us in a way. We're actually better playing like inviting teams onto us and hitting on the counter attack, which we do play that away. But, you know, maybe we should try and implement it more at home.
00:05:21
Alex
It might yield a bit more success. um But like you say, some of it is just start unexplainable. um Maybe there is a pressure, you know, especially, like you said, having a couple of good results and then coming back to Sellers Park. Maybe there is pressure that we do need to perform um in front of the home crowd.
00:05:39
Alex
So, you know, there are there are chances to to rectify these, though. You know, we've played most of the top teams at home. He played Man United, played Arsenal, Man City, Liverpool.
00:05:52
Alex
ah So he should have a ah decent run-in with home games. um So it's a chance to put things right before the end of the season. um I know the fans will be frustrated, especially after the Everton game.
00:06:05
Alex
like That was a silly one to to throw away. Even a point would have been good against Everton at the moment. They are really in form. um But yeah, we we do need to turn it around. But I don't think we need to change anything drastically at home.
00:06:18
Alex
um I feel like the performances have been good. We just... Just need to cut out those silly mistakes um and yeah maybe just tweak the tactics a little bit so we're playing more of our counter-attacking football that's been so successful away from home.
00:06:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
but but ah for for For a number of teams, you you know talk about how when they play at home, you have to, whatever you have visiting, aside from you know the the top guys, City, Liverpool, Arsenal, maybe Chelsea as well, whatever's on your own top, you need to get at them. You want to give the fans something to shout about.
00:06:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
So a couple of times I've seen teams you know try to do that home and then they end up losing their reading and losing games, and it just dampens the confidence.
00:07:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
But with Palace, the ah game plan has pretty much been the same. Whether Omer away, um you know, the defense has been solid.
00:07:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
You've had wingbacks, you know, Marodian down the flanks. You get um the the midfield players also helping out the defense and trying to, ah you know, pick up teams on a counter. It's pretty much been the same for Palace. So sometimes you just wonder what exactly...
00:07:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
the The reason is for the poor home form this season. I'm just going to go through the numbers. at at this At the moment, Palace are currently on 30 points in the league. And that's seven wins, nine ah draws and nine losses.
00:07:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
However, just two of those wins have come from Celos Park. ah five of Five of the wins have been away. ah if if the league was just played at home, Palace would be 16th on the log.

Olivier Glasner's First Year Review

00:08:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Meanwhile, you when you look at away numbers, Palace would be 7th in the league. So for for some reason, the home form just hasn't been great. I'm sure Glasner will be looking at that and looking to improve upon that, especially you know as as ah we the the season eats on stretch. But um how important is it, though? Because if if you're going to stay in that kind of form away from home, which is usually the more difficult one you know of the two.
00:08:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah do do Do you look at it and say, if families have that good form away from home, it's only a matter of time before the home results start improving?
00:08:51
Alex
um Yeah, I mean, yeah, I think you kind of should look at like that. I think ah overall our form has improved like generally since like November.
00:09:04
Alex
um And that is, you know, we've probably drawn more at home than we have away. um But yeah, I think we we should be looking to carry that away form into our home performances. Yeah.
00:09:18
Alex
Like it would obviously help us massively. But I think we've we've got a few tough away games, you know, coming up towards the end of the season. um And we've got Fulham away next, which is a very tough game. They're playing very well.
00:09:33
Alex
um So I'm not sure how much our away form will continue the way it has been. Like we've gone to a struggling West Ham and um won, a struggling Leicester and won. Man United, we all know, aren't very good at the moment.
00:09:45
Alex
So these are games, you know, that we're perhaps targeting. But we do have tougher away games coming up. I actually think our home games are a bit easier. You know, the likes of Dipswich, you know, and a couple of other mid-table teams coming to sell us. So you kind of look at it like that and you maybe think maybe the things will slide and we'll start picking up more points at home.
00:10:06
Alex
But do you know what? It's sometimes one of these things you can't explain, like, A lot of our defeats at home have been by the odd goal or, you know, very fine margins. So, you know, it's just if that tips in our favour, then we start looking at it a bit more favourably.
00:10:21
Alex
um Hopefully that's the case, like towards the end of the season.
00:10:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, you're totally right. There's Man City, Arsenal, Newcastle and Spurs. Those are some of the games coming up for Palace away from home after the Fulham away game, of course.
00:10:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we'll see how things go. We'll take a very quick pause and when we return, we will move on to talk about the boss. Glasner has been at Palace for exactly one year. It's been...
00:10:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
up and down situation for the team so to speak but ah you could argue that the vast majority of Palace fans are very happy with the job Glasner's done but we will get Alex's thoughts when we return from this break don't go anywhere
00:11:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:11:34

00:12:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's get on tonight, Alex, and talk about um one year on the Olivier Glasner for Palace. He came in from Germany and oh you know that there was a revitalization in the squad.
00:12:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Players' performance improved drastically last season. ah Got some amazing results. ah Part of it you know One of my favourites, the dropping of Manchester United, I saw Alisa doing some great magic. you know and you saw and We saw a lot of players you know improving.
00:12:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mateta got a couple of goals. But the style of the season wasn't the greatest. Then the team started ah you know bring getting back into form. There's been talks about ah whether he's had enough support In the transfer market, there's been talks about whether some of the players could perform better and, you know, ah take responsibility better than they've done on the in-board.
00:13:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
When you look at one year on the glass now, do you sum it up?
00:13:15
Alex
I think overall, very positive um considering where we were when Glasner inherited the team. um The last few games of the Roy Hodgson era were just some of the worst I've seen of Palace in the Premier League. um just The football was so bad. like The atmosphere around the club was terrible.
00:13:39
Alex
um yeah looked like we were just sleepwalking towards relegation. But then obviously Glasner came in and he didn't just kind of, you know, keep us safe and like get a good few results. He came in and, you know, revitalised us. And like you say, we had some amazing results towards the end of last season. and I think we played some of the best football that I've seen us play, you know, since I've been a fan of Crystal Palace.
00:14:04
Alex
which is going back quite a while. But um it's ah it was just great to see that kind of, you know, that different approach rather than the kind of will grind out results.
00:14:15
Alex
You know, you've had managers like Sam Allardyce, Tony Pulis, Hodgson, all very defensive. And then you've got Glasner, who's a bit more, you know, a bit more advanced maybe in his tactics, a bit more modern, ah using the wing backs and that kind of thing. just great to see us, at you know, enhancing that and using it.
00:14:33
Alex
um I mean, yeah, obviously the start to the season wasn't great and Glasner was facing a fair bit of pressure ah around the October-November time. But I'm glad we stuck with him because we are again starting to see why he's such a good ah good coach. um And the players, I think, absolutely love him. Like the scenes at the end of the Newcastle game where Munoz scored that late equaliser.
00:14:56
Alex
He was down you know in front of the Holmesdale celebrating with the players and the fans. And nothing like endears you more to a manager than that kind of like passion. um He just shows that he's in it as much as everyone else.
00:15:11
Alex
um And I think you know he just he obviously loves the club. I think Bayern Munich were... interested in him in the summer, according to reports. And you know he's obviously stayed with us because he was only with us for six months before that.
00:15:25
Alex
So it would have been strange if he left. But you know so ah another manager might have had their head turned by that, but he didn't, which again is like endearing as as a fan.
00:15:36
Alex
um yeah just If you judge it from where we were 12 months ago to where we are now, right our league position might not be that improved. But in terms of the atmosphere, the positivity, you know the players he's got playing really good football, I would say we are in a much better place. and We've got something with a lot of young players and like a good fairly young manager to kick on with uh the foundations are there you know hopefully for the rest of this season and into the next few seasons that you know we can push on and maybe become a top half team rather than a
00:16:13
Alex
you know, a 15th to 11th team, like that, that is the next step. And I think he is the man to take us there. We wouldn't have got that under Hodgson. So yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm really pleased with how his first 12 months have gone.
00:16:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's been 44 games under Glaston, 19 wins, 12 draws and 13 losses. 43.1% win percentage.
00:16:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
That isn't entirely bad when you you know look at the stature of the club. and You know, some of the things that you ah the the club has had to go through, losing players to injuries, play you know, key players, or at least the likes leaving ah the the team.
00:16:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Glasner's reign started

Future of Crystal Palace Under Glasner

00:16:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
with a 3-0 win over Burnley, and then there was a tough run of results afterwards, I think five games without a win. Then came the 1-0 win.
00:17:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
over Liverpool, and that sparked a run of six wins in seven in seven, and those were some of the greatest times, you know, for Palace fans. And what what is what is absolutely amazing is how Glasner's team, ah you know, are able to ah get this run of wins, even though this season, the start wasn't the greatest. We've seen Palace go on, you know, that run of six wins out of seven, um you know,
00:17:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
successive games getting results and putting in great performances. As you said, it's not just about the points, it's not just about the results. When you look at the performances put in by the boys, the development of players, and then you you look you look at say, ah you know, the atmosphere at Celos, it looks like one that, you know, other the fans are enjoying themselves. i just wonder whether and case Kuba made for, you know maybe giving more opportunities to, ah you know, academy players and younger players, although that is not very easy considering it's a, you know, the it's ah' a business-oriented result, isn't it? If things don't go well, he's out of a job.
00:18:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
But what what do do you look at um did you look at him and think it's one to look in that direction and give opportunity to the young guys in the academy?
00:18:26
Alex
I think so. i think he's obviously putting a lot of these guys on the bench every week, which is good exposure as ah as a start. um But I think that time will come maybe in a couple of years. like The academy's only been up and running for, I think, three years now, maybe four.
00:18:45
Alex
um So I think and we should be starting to see these players you know break into the first team, um hopefully next year and and the year after. um yeah i mean I would like always like to see more young players given a chance at Palace.
00:19:01
Alex
um I think most fans would agree with that as well. like We do pride ourselves on some of the young players that we've produced over the years. um and It would be good to see this new crop come in.
00:19:13
Alex
I think as well, like we're obviously signing young players from the Championship as like a part of our transfer model. And that maybe sort of takes away from the opportunities for our academy players.
00:19:25
Alex
um So I think we may may have to rebalance that at some point and say, right, we don't need to keep going into the championship. We've got someone here who's good enough. um But yeah, I think a bit more bravery in that. um Maybe towards the end of the season, hopefully when we're a bit safer, we'll give one or two of these guys a chance to shine.
00:19:44
Alex
um And I think Glasner would do that. he doesn't He is quite a brave manager in his decision. So I think, yeah, you know hopefully towards the end of the season, we might see a few of these players make an appearance or two.
00:19:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I wanted to you know give a lot kudos to the ah guys at the hierarchy of the club because at that time when results were not going well, they could have been irrational and just ah make that decision to to let him go.
00:20:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Especially, we've we've seen that happen with some other clubs. so of Even at Palace, Patrick Vieira was one Palace fans thought maybe could have gotten more time bought you know that decision was made. But when you look at where Palace are now with Glasner, then no one will mind the journey that the team has gone you know to to get to this level that they are at. Fantastic.
00:20:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
we'll We'll take a pause again, and when we return, we we'll talk about the left wing-back position. It's been all Tyreek Mitchell's since Glasner came. He's played on that left since he made his debut for Palace, but there is a certain Ben Chilwell who has...
00:20:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
come on loan from Chelsea after being in the wilderness for so many weeks and off the cameo that he had against Everton, there are already conversations about whether Glassman needs to look at that position and maybe make a change.
00:21:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Daily Parlour podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. Wale and Alex on the pod tonight. Many thanks to you for staying with us. As we get into the final part of the ah show today, let's get on to talk about ah the Tyrek Mitchell bench situation. Chilwell came in on loan ah from Chelsea. ah Things haven't been entirely great for him. Had injury worries.
00:21:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then Enzo Mareska came and put him on that a list of players that practically had no future. But he

Ben Chilwell vs Tyrick Mitchell: Team Dynamics

00:22:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
did get a couple of, I think, cup appearances, maybe one or two. But we know that he's a player that has great potential.
00:22:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was fantastic at Leicester. Chelsea got him for a lot of money. Did great at the start. Then they brought in Kukurea from Brighton and that started changing things. Plaus' injury ah worries as well.
00:22:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
But with Imah Palace and of although what what we saw against Everton is not enough. But we know that there had always been questions as regards whether Tariq Mutual...
00:22:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
whether his defensive abilities are better than his attacking abilities. And we definitely know that is something Ben Chilwell brings into Palace. Do you think Glasner will be looking at that side and thinking maybe Chilwell will get the nod out of Tarek Mitchell? Because there has to be a reason they've brought him on loan from Chelsea.
00:23:08
Alex
Yeah, I mean, he's not the kind of calibre of player that's going to be a backup to Mitchell either. Like he is Ben Chilwell, he's a Champions League winner, Premier League winner.
00:23:20
Alex
he's hi He's a really good player. um And I think obviously he'll see this as a chance to prove himself even for Chelsea or another team in the future. And he's not going to want to just yeah play backup to ah Mitchell.
00:23:33
Alex
It is a bit of a tough one in terms of like, other than his mistake against Everton, you can't really fault Mitchell, and to like you say, defensively.
00:23:45
Alex
He is very good positionally. you know He doesn't really give players too much space to get past. He's a good, like solid defender. But if you're playing like Glasner wants to play, you need someone like if we had a Chilwell and Munoz threat on either side, that is much more threatening than Mitchell and Munoz.
00:24:08
Alex
um So I think when you look at in that perspective, Chilwell is probably more suited to Glasner's style of play. So I think the fact that he's been slowly introducing Chilwell in the last couple of games that came off He played quite a long time against Doncaster and then the cameo at Everton.
00:24:27
Alex
I think it's just signs that perhaps Gladstone is looking at switching to Chilwell over Mitchell in the future. um You know, it's not usually a position that he makes a sub at left back or right back. he usually sticks with Munoz and Mitchell throughout the game.
00:24:41
Alex
So, yeah, I think the signs are there that Mitchell's place might be under threat. um you know you can only be solid defensively for so long but you need to show that stuff in the final third like there's been so many frustrating times with mitchell when he's got into great positions to cross And he puts it nowhere near Mateta, who's like the obvious target in in the box, or he'll do a cutback and so like, you know, someone on the edge of the box and the chance just goes.
00:25:09
Alex
um Whereas as I think Chilwell is a bit more and decisive with his decisions in the final third, from what I've seen, you know, in the past anyway. So, yeah, it's it's it's one that, you know, Mitchell's been amazing for us, but At the same time, this could push him on to be even better. And hopefully that's what Glasner's thinking, is that that competition will drive Mitchell um on a bit more.
00:25:33
Alex
But yeah, like I said, I just think the signs are there that Chilwell is going to replace him at some point.
00:25:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, you you make a very interesting point, you know, talking about Chilwell's abilities and what he's done in the Premier League with Leicester, with Chelsea and, you know a couple of times when he's you know got the chance at England as well. we His abilities are, you know, well established.
00:25:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
so but When you look at it, do do you think it makes sense long term? Because, you know, I look at Chilwell's age, look at Tyreek Mitchell's age, you wonder what Chilwell's long term ambitions are.
00:26:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is it looking to stay at Palace if there is the option to to buy? When you also worry about his injury record and all of that, and you when you put all of those dynamics together as ah as a a smart thing to do long term because you don't you you wouldn't you know put Mitchell on the bench and then start playing Chilwell and god forbid for example he gets injured as he always does and then Mitchell then comes back into the game but I don't know how I know with players there's they've got a strong mentality but that's definitely part of them thinking I'm definitely your second choice I'm only you know getting this nod because this guy is injured
00:26:49
Alex
Yeah, I mean, Mitchell as well has been linked with a move away. So we're not, obviously, we don't know the kind of extent to that, but maybe Glasner knows something that we don't and that he's preparing for the future.
00:27:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
maybe.
00:27:02
Alex
and That's the only, you know, that's what we can speculate against. There's no concrete evidence that that's true. But... um Yeah, again, like but Chilwell, I wouldn't see him as a permanent replacement.
00:27:15
Alex
um I personally feel like you know he'll use this six-month stint with us as a springboard to build his fitness and show what he can do, then either go back to Chelsea or go to a bigger team.
00:27:30
Alex
but No disrespect to us, but I think if he proves himself well in this in this spell, then he'll probably have bigger teams looking at him as a potential option. um But yeah, I mean, there's a few question marks about that position. um ah think long-term, whether Mitchell goes or stays, obviously we we need backup there.
00:27:50
Alex
um And we probably need to make a permanent left wing-back sign-in in January, and in the summer. um And the same for Munoz on the right as well. We don't have a proper replacement for him.

00:28:07
Alex
yeah
00:28:11
Alex
He is. Yeah, he's he's too good of ah an attacking player to play at right wing back. what He can play there, get yeah. ah But we've got Joel Ward as well, you know. Nathaniel Klein. But yes ah yeah, they are two positions that we probably have the biggest question marks over at the moment.
00:28:30
Alex
um but I think we're fine in midfield, defence and attack. But yeah, those wing back positions are a bit a bit tricky at the moment.

Well, there's there's definitely something to think about there for Olivier Glasner. The decision, I'm sure, will be easy and easy to make. ah the The hope, of course, will be that he will be making the decision based on you know the ah what he's seen on the training pitch and this player's putting in the effort. It would be sad if it comes down to a decision about availability, particularly with Ben Chilwell's injury records. but We'll see how things go.
