Humorous Misunderstandings and Helmet Jokes

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast. I'm Joe Lodge. I've taken to wearing a helmet in public in case I encounter any Millwall goalkeepers. There's been an inexplicable increase at the same time in people asking me if I know where I am, if I have anyone to take me home and if I can point them to the nearest velodrome.
00:00:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
But my head remains attached to my shoulders.

The Violent Tackle: Analysis and Implications

00:00:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
With me today is a man whose head is always firmly on his shoulders, Wale Bakari. How are you doing, Wale?
00:00:39
Wale Bakare
All right, Joe, great see um It was some weekend of FA Cup games. The Palace game was the result somewhat overshadowed by you know that.
00:00:53
Wale Bakare
um ah I was about to say that attack on Mateta by the goalkeeper, but I don't know. It's just you really wish you don't see tackles like that in football, but they they tend to happen a couple of times.
00:01:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:01:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah so we'll get into all of that in a moment as while they says today our plan is to talk about palaces fa cup win over south london rails millwall that puts the eagles through to the court finals Also, the horrendous tackle on John-Fleek Mateta from World's goalkeeper, Liam Roberts.
00:01:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Possibly one of the worst challenges professional sport has ever seen. And then we'll wrap up by talking about... Palace's f FA Cup quarterfinal draw with Fulham and how the competition looks as a whole from here. But let's start with the horrible bit.
00:01:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
John-Philippe Mateta was treated for 10 minutes on the pitch after was kicked in the head by Mills' Liam Roberts in the early part of the match. He was given oxygen, stretched off the pitch and taken straight to hospital where he had to receive 25 stitches having suffered a severe laceration on his ear.
00:02:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Another Palace figure, Steve Parrish, experienced a rush of blood to rather than from the head and gave an interview Sky Sports at halftime in which he called it the most reckless challenge he's ever seen.
00:02:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is he right, Wally? Was it that bad?
00:02:31
Wale Bakare
it It was that bad. It was a reckless challenge. Whether it's the most reckless challenge I've ever seen.
00:02:40
Wale Bakare
Trust me, ive I've seen worse on the Nigerian streets, you know, with boys playing football and just going out to harm themselves sometimes.
00:02:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
you
00:02:48
Wale Bakare
But um more seriously, I don't... It was a very reckless challenge. It was quite similar to... remember Luke de Jong in the World Cup final in South Africa, Spain against the Netherlands, and he just planted his studs on Xabi Alonso's chest.
00:03:07
Wale Bakare
But I think it would be more awful and more dangerous if it's the head than the chest. But I've seen videos on YouTube of some horrendous tackles in football games. So...
00:03:21
Wale Bakare
But as far as games that I've watched and followed are concerned, has to be one of the most reckless tackles I've seen. um you know i' for um I'm glad that Mateta you know is fine and well. Hopefully recovers you know ah sufficiently and he's able to get back on the pitch as quickly as possible.
00:03:43
Wale Bakare
um A lot of things have happened after the game. a lot of talks as regards whether you know the ban should be extended. um There's also been

Apology Accepted: Liam Roberts and Public Reaction

00:03:53
Wale Bakare
talks of the man Liam Roberts getting some abuse, which...
00:03:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:03:57
Wale Bakare
you know as i understandable as it is, especially with football fans, even smallest things smaller things rather get, you know, warrant abuse from some football fans. It's not very nice. I'm sure, you know, he's in a very difficult place as well, you know, mentally and all of that. And we've had a lot of footballers come out to say,
00:04:21
Wale Bakare
very few footballers go into a challenge um intending to hurt the opponent or looking to cause very serious damage.
00:04:32
Wale Bakare
um Although when you watch that tackle on Saturday, did feel like that, but I don't see why you know you would want to hurt Mateta. It was a situation of and in a split second, he's made a very, very, very foolish decision to go for the ball with his thoughts. Mateta has made the brave decision to try to get to the ball.
00:04:56
Wale Bakare
And it it could have been worse, actually, when you look at it to some extent. Because I was...
00:05:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, at least he sort turns his head away. Yeah.
00:05:04
Wale Bakare
Yeah, yeah. And and I was really glad to to see him at least...
00:05:10
Wale Bakare
it It was one of those tackles where the player just collapses and and you just don't see any movement. I was glad to see Mateta move a bit. Maybe that is because he's a big man himself.
00:05:22
Wale Bakare
But, you know, um I'm sure some other players might not have coped so well as Mateta did.
00:05:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:05:28
Wale Bakare
um it it was It was very, very reckless, quite all right. I don't think I would want to believe what we've had footballers say. I don't think the goalkeeper... would went into that challenge intending to have that kind of reckless impact as he did.
00:05:45
Wale Bakare
um Although you would argue, what else did he expect going into going
00:05:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bye.
00:05:51
Wale Bakare
you know, all out like that. but I'm just glad Mateta is fine. it's It's sad that, you know, the goalkeeper has then had to be subjected to, you know, the amount of abuse that we hear he's been subjected to.
00:06:04
Wale Bakare
um Whether his ban will be extended, we will wait to see. I'm sure Now there's these talks of ah you know the abuse that is there to go through as well.
00:06:15
Wale Bakare
I would suspect that will then be taken into consideration maybe when a decision is being looked into as regards whether the ban ah should should be extended.
00:06:27
Wale Bakare
But um it's also nice to hear that he apologized or you know spoke to Mateta later in the day. Mateta accepted his apologies. Mateta is fine. Hopefully, we'll recover quickly enough.
00:06:40
Wale Bakare
But yeah, it was it was very, very

Palace Triumphs Over Millwall and Sponsorship

00:06:42
Wale Bakare
reckless, that challenge.
00:06:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, your mum withdrew than me while I was going to call and send him few straight to the room and say,
00:06:46
Wale Bakare
but yeah No, no, no. If you asked me the same question on Saturday, you probably would have gotten me a different answer.
00:06:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I'm only joking. I think, listen, reckless is the word. and Reckless absolutely is the word. We understand how it happens. He's come rushing out to clear a ball, pumped full of adrenaline.
00:07:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's played, know, he should know better. He's played 200-odd professional games in the AFL. He's not a whippersnapper, but he's probably not played a game of this magnitude before, really.
00:07:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
used it slightly, yeah, sort of League One, League Two level. And it's a derby. Tensions are high. He's come rushing out and tried The only thing he can do to rectify um his mistake is just put his foot through the ball as hard as possible.
00:07:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
to get it out with Mateta and his own defender, he could easily have caught bearing down on him at full pout. But it's unbelievably reckless, really. It's almost jousting. People running each other at top speed and then extending a pointed edge towards towards them. is The physics of that are pretty brutal. There's a reason we don't joust anymore.
00:08:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it is is pretty silly. um i do buy that he's really upset. That seems to be what everyone's saying. And, and you know, um I do feel it bad for him. He shouldn't be subjected to abuse.
00:08:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
But if so, obviously, yeah maybe maybe Steve Parrish is right. That's the most reckless challenge sim for a while. It's not. the worst in some ways, because the worst challenges you get are feel calculated and malicious and not kind of out of control like that.
00:08:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, um yeah, it might not, it might be more outstandingly reckless than horrendous in other ways, but I think he'll only have himself to blame and really won't have a leg to stand on if...
00:08:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
the FA do decide to extend the ban, although I suspect they won't. I feel like that's fairly unusual for a tackle that's where he is.
00:08:53
Wale Bakare
Is it going to get three? Is there three-match ban it will get for the red card? Yeah.
00:08:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Three matches are standard. I suspect they'll stick with that. I can't really think, I might be wrong, any refereeing fans, feel free to at us and explain why I've got this completely wrong.
00:09:06
Wale Bakare
Yeah.
00:09:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think you usually the only see big extensions when they feel like there's a a level of kind of malice and libertiness in it. I don't think, you certainly can't prove that. think most of the evidence points that it wasn't maliciously intended.
00:09:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Light is horrendously, horrendously reckless. So um yeah, whatever you can complain too much.
00:09:34
Wale Bakare
It's one of those, like could to be honest, if someone looked at it and says, um um I'm extending the band, you also wouldn't be surprised, to be honest.
00:09:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:09:44
Wale Bakare
Yeah.
00:09:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, John Philippe Mateta, we wish him the best, speediest recovery. Hope he's feeling healthy healthy soon.
00:09:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Speaking of that, time for a morally onerous, potentially, segue into our ah so a word from our sponsors, Bionic, who can help you feeling as healthy as possible, as quickly as possible.
00:10:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Getting into details of the actual match, it was a semi-comfortable win for Palace in the end. They scored two holes in the 33rd and 40th minute before Millwall pulled one back against the run of play on the stroke at half-time.
00:11:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
The second half was a bit more dull it's bit more a case of of Palace gradually breaking Millwall down well those attritional kind of performances but Jean-Philippe Mateta's replacement Eddie Nketiah secures the win with a header in the 81st minute what do you think of Palace's performance there Wally good value for the win is it Were they particularly good? Were Millwall particularly bad?
00:11:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did they have to dig deep? John Fletcher and Matetiroff? What are your thoughts?
00:11:45
Wale Bakare
No, it was it was a pretty comfortable result for Palace. And, you know, one thing that I don't know whether it's been mentioned enough The fact that after the Mateta injury, um we should you know also talk about the psychological impact he would have on his teammates you know after his gun out. But they've gone on you know ah carried out their jobs professionally.
00:12:06
Wale Bakare
um Some great performances ah from players that have been doing well in the last couple of weeks. And again, Edin Ketea getting a goal. ah for himself after his first Premier League goal ah the other day.
00:12:20
Wale Bakare
um We spoke about an opportunity for him to get a run of games. We don't know how you know ah ah long Mateta will be out for, if he will be out for ah for long, whether that will be an opportunity for Nketiah to get a run of games, although in very very sad circumstances.
00:12:40
Wale Bakare
But overall, it was a good result. um I was saying to Dan the other day when we're talking about the the last round of the FA Cup, and I said that, you know Particularly with the FA Cup, there's no such thing as ah game you should win.
00:12:56
Wale Bakare
Liverpool manager, Anis Lort was saying, oh, Plymouth is a game you know we should win. Yeah, but then you know it's the FA Cup again. We know that those giant killings happen in the FA Cup.
00:13:11
Wale Bakare
Milwaukee could easily have you know gotten a victory against Crystal Palace and it wouldn't still be a surprise. It would just fall into the category of you know a lesser ranked team has come and defeated a Premier League side. But it was a game that could get tricky for Palace, particularly after the the injury to Eddie Nketiah as well.
00:13:32
Wale Bakare
I mean, to John-Philippe Mateta as well. But they went on about their job professionally. It was a relatively comfortable game. I cannot remember ah game where Palace had more ball possession. was about 74%, 75%, I think.
00:13:47
Wale Bakare
And that's not something that happens very often. What we know of Palace is try to suck up the pressure, eat on the counter-attack and get a result. But they were the biggest side of the two, at least at the moment, playing at home.
00:14:01
Wale Bakare
So they went on and and did the job and it was just, it was

Standout Performances and Key Players

00:14:05
Wale Bakare
a good game to watch. was a great performance. um You know, you could pick out some individual great performances, but overall for the team, good result and it's good that, you know, the run of form continues.
00:14:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think you're spot on. The point about the psychological impact is worth raising of that Mateta injury. I think you could really get a sense of that from Glasner's press conference after the game where he kind of...
00:14:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
struggled to speak about the win in the match, even though actually they should be quite excited. this Sure, it's it's a result where they were heavy favourites going in, but nevertheless, it's a it's a local derby and a win that puts them through to the court fancy of the FA Cup, and that's always cause for celebration, but it was so overshadowed by, you i think, the gruesome nature of the injury, isn't it? Because it's probably...
00:15:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mateta, we don't really know yet, but he's going to be out for as long, I would think, as if he'd just sort of pulled up out of nowhere or someone tackling a bit heavily and he'd done his AC out. But it's the feeling of assault and being physically damaged and that is, yeah, it is rattling and um upsetting.
00:15:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So think it did well to overcome that. And as you say, it is good to see Palace finding solutions when they have to be the ball dominant team, finding ways to break Mewal down.
00:15:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they were aided by some slightly poor defending by Millwall at times in that. Obviously, my top of this one springs to mind is Jaffer Tenganga's header. It's a lovely cross from Will Hughes, but he's... think Jaffer Tenganga's a pretty decent centre-back, but...
00:16:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
he probably should be aware that there's no one behind him. There's no one following the ball in. He's not really under any pressure. So he does not need to just turn the ball back into his own net like that. It's yeah not brilliant defending in that case.
00:16:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
And there's also no one springs to mind that's a chance to chill while had not long before the first goal. And... That one was, yeah, again, just quite, it was enabled again by a great Will Hughes pass, but also a poor defensive line from Millwall that you don't see so much at the higher level.
00:16:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nevertheless, so Palace did find other tools in their armoury, spreading them down. I think the set pieces were were on point again and that's become a real feature of Palace's game this season.
00:16:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that first goal, the own goal, comes from a set piece. And then Munoz's goal comes from, maybe not set piece, but the same kind of fundamental principles of they sort flood the box, get physical and capitalise when the ball breaks loose.
00:17:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
So if you can do those things, that's, um yeah, it is encouraging for Palace pushing on to a point where if their form continues, they might not be able to counter-attack against every team. People might not fancy but pushing on against them as much as they have.
00:17:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah And they need to alternative route to goal. And I think they we saw a few potentials on display there. So that was definitely encouraging.

FA Cup Draw: Palace vs. Fulham

00:17:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did any particular players stand out for you? I mentioned Nketi already, but um yeah, who else who sprung to mind?
00:17:52
Wale Bakare
Yeah, Ingeti getting a goal and be coming in and getting that goal was great for him. But Daniel Munoz had a great game. um it's It's been you know putting in some wonderful performances in the last couple of weeks. Got ah got another goal.
00:18:08
Wale Bakare
um He must have scored about five goals already. In competitions this season, he tends to always find himself in You know, just of those areas where the opportunities fall to him.
00:18:21
Wale Bakare
um Chris Richards in the defense was um what steady and for for some reason of the you know back line, he was the best of the three, which...
00:18:35
Wale Bakare
Because was a bit surprising. It usually would be Lacroix or Gabe or Richards on the day was just phenomenal. And maybe this is as a result of the fact that he's now you know getting back to form after you know the injuries of the start of the season, the uncertainties as to was the third person after Lacroix.
00:18:56
Wale Bakare
um Gay, he's gotten the nod, especially after Shaluba left for for a number of games now. So that run is definitely getting the benefit of that run of games. And he was just great against me also.
00:19:09
Wale Bakare
He was actually the the best player on the pitch for me. ah So, Richard Munoz, Eze, of course, ah you know, had a good game. We were seeing him, you know, oh those drop-of-the-shoulder moves that we know him for.
00:19:25
Wale Bakare
you know going at defenders that we know is able to do. We're seeing that get back into this game. And those were largely the the the best performance ah in in the in in the game. But as I said, you know everyone put put a good shift in.
00:19:40
Wale Bakare
La Croix-Gay, Willius were also great in the game. But top performance has to be Richard Munoz and maybe Eze for me.
00:19:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think that's good selection. Rich is a good one to highlight. um As you say, putting a good shift all around. He also, think, did really well in, I realised, set-piece goal I forgot to mention was Nketiah's came in and came from a deep, deep free kick from Eze, didn't it? And he's really well nodding the ball back across goal for Nketiah to put his head on.
00:20:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think, to name a couple of others, And Ketia, as you already mentioned, was really good. he put himself about really well. he looked...
00:20:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
eager to seize the um opportunity that dark evil forces had afforded him to lead the line for Palace, which he doesn't often get. And he did well. If you're looking for negatives, he had 45% pass completion. So I don't think Barcelona are going to come knocking anytime soon.
00:20:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
But um he he got like five shots off. Won six of nine aerial duels, which I was really impressed by, ah three of five ground duels. Really sort of a surprisingly physical performance from him as the main striker, which is encouraging that he can fill...
00:21:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Phil Mateta's role without Glaston having to make as many tactical compromises as you might have thought. He was able to play a bit as a target man, which I think is a pleasant surprise just for smaller striker like Ketia.
00:21:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
And yeah, but he did he did really well. um So or credit to him. Not really easy to come on in those circumstances. Kehi, I think, also did well.
00:21:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah agree Ritz is maybe the stand-up defence, but Palace's performance was rebuilt on they were able to dominate Millwall because of the supreme comfort of their defenders on the ball and that is more true of ga than anyone else that he pays you played while over a hundred passes in the match which is um upstanding for pal have ah player who is capable of doing that from um from the days of scott dann and davidian delaney know so long ago and have a centerback now who's able to dictate a game
00:22:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
like that is is a yeah really indicative of kind of the garage where they've where they've gone to huge was great again more incisive passes from him um perhaps palla's most creative player and in the first half at least and of what chiwell was encouraging ninety minutes under his belt go up and down took up some good positions um probably should have scored but nevertheless it was verya good run into the space to get there and yeah even just being able to get ninety minutes in his legs in a derby in quite a physical game
00:22:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
is its very encouraging for ah this but think with that we'll wrap up our discussion of the south london derby and um move on so a chat about pals upcom fixture with um london's secondmo violent team after mil full and and how the rest of the tournament's gonna shape up but only after we've had a word from our sponsor
00:23:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
so palace will be playing fulham in the corefinal away at quan cottage after lay staol off manchester united um penalties in their around the sixteen ti how do you feel about that draw wi is it is it favorable unfavorable kind of happy with that from a pilot's perspective based on what else was in the pot what other combinations could have come up
00:24:01
Wale Bakare
Well, do the only other, or the the easiest would have been Preston, just by the virtue of the fact that, you know, the they're not in the Premier League. Every other team is it's in the Premier League.
00:24:13
Wale Bakare
Palace already have beaten Aston Villa this season, already got a draw against Manchester City, lost 1-1 against Fulham.
00:24:25
Wale Bakare
I think Palace beat Brighton as well. I can't remember now, but... oh Preston would have been the easiest of you know the the lot and the pot. But when you go by recent form, Palace just a couple of weeks ago Fulham at the Craven Cottage.
00:24:42
Wale Bakare
so maybe they can you know take that belief into that game. And when you look at the fact that even in the Premier League away games have been easier for Palace, it's totally fine that the game is happening away.
00:24:55
Wale Bakare
Incidentally, at at did say I didn't see lot of football during the weekend. The Fulham United game was one that saw. Of course, I started watching when it was 1-0 to Fulham because I enjoy United suffering.
00:25:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:25:08
Wale Bakare
free Shortly after they even got the equaliser. But Fulham were you know good in the game. They've dropped off a bit from what they've done in the startro at the start of the season.
00:25:23
Wale Bakare
But they're they're having a fantastic season so far, Fulham. um For a lot of the teams in the quarterfinal, you know A cup run is something that they will be excited about. Palace, Fulham, Brighton, even Preston.
00:25:40
Wale Bakare
Manchester City, of course, are used to getting to the final i of the f FA Cup. um They will be having a tricky game against Bournemouth away, you know, by the way. So um it it could have been worse, could have been easier with Preston maybe, but then still the FA Cup. You could get Preston and still get knocked out.
00:25:58
Wale Bakare
But Fulham away, judging by Palace's current form wouldn't be too bad. Although the game is overplayed on the twenty ninth that's well three weeks from now. So if the form persists until that time, I will be very confident. But it would be nice you know for the team to to get a Wembley date.

Palace's FA Cup Prospects and Rooney's Career

00:26:22
Wale Bakare
It would be nice overall to to get to the final, maybe you win the cup would be really great. But it does look like a good fixture for Palace and um I'm quite confident that they can get the job done against Fulham.
00:26:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah i think it's it's it's okay for them as a draw isn't it' um it's quite hard to cool they're well-matched teams similar veins of form probably goingnna finish the season in similar positions and probably with similar strengths and weaknesses really i'd say like both difficult playgainsts good defensive units can can cause problems in in sort of tacking transitions and stuff that but not most inspired attacking units so i think it'll be
00:27:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah close
00:27:11
Wale Bakare
it.
00:27:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
based on what we've seen of of film and palace this season they're incredibly well matched there's not much to go off one way or the other what the at sourst um palace lost two l two for them for them were fairly comfortable and then a couple weeks ago at craven cottage fullham lost twonos palettes and pals were fairly comfortable so if anything we can conclude from that that the winning team is the away team
00:27:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
and pallets are on their way to an f a cup seventymi fine um but as's one you can really see kind of a bit cy guide penalties um might separate them but that's all right that's that's not not the worst result at all depending on where you look at the time of recording worth buring mines that um forest ipswich hasn't ah been played yet i a recall so
00:28:09
Wale Bakare
Well,
00:28:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
palace either fifth or six favorites um sky have them se as outright eca winner is behind city villa bright and fullulham and bormouth is that fair it was like underestimating pal's chances a little bit
